Ring Opening of 2,3-Diphenylcyclopropyllithium to 1,3-Diphenylallyhithium CompoundsBy means of the 2,3-diphenylcyclopropyllithium compounds 18a, f, h-1 and 19a, k, l we investigated the conditions and the stereochemical mode of the ring opening reaction to the corresponding 1,3-diphenylallyl anions. Since this reaction occurs in the case of 18a, f, j, k and 19a, k but not with 18h, i, l and 191, ion pair effects are of enormous influence. Stable allyl anions are only formed from 18a, - f and 19a. Kinetic experiments demonstrate that the isomerization reactions of the allyl anions 32, formed from 18a and 19a, are faster than the valence isomerizations of 18a and 19a, Thus only the thermodynamically most stable endo,exo-32 from ring opening of either 18a or 19a is observed. The bicyclic cyclopropylanion 7a, which can only open in a disrotatory fashion, provides a kinetical criterion for the conrotation of 18a and 19a: the rate constant of the ring opening reaction of 7a is 5500 (740) times smaller than that of 18a (19a). - MO-calculations confirm the high barrier of the conrotatory cyclopropyl anion ring opening reaction and the small barrier of the allyl anion isomerization. Just the opposite is the case with the corresponding cations. The main reason for the unfavorable conrotation is the almost negligible overlap population between C2 and C3 in the transition state. The same argument applies for other small ring compounds like cyclobutene.
Notes:
