Barriers to Hindered Rotation Around the Double Bond System of CumulenesFor the barrier to hindered rotation around the double bond system of the butatriene 5 in chlorobenzene the values of ΔH388≠ = 113.0 ± 2 kJmol-1 and ΔS388≠ = -32.0 ± 5 JK-1 mol-1 are measured by 1H NMR. For the hexapentaene 9 ΔH380≠ = 79.9 ± 6 kJmol-1 and ΔS380≠ = -20 ± 15 JK-1mol-1 are found. Gibbs free energies of activation ΔGT± are determined for the cumulenes 5, 6, 8, and 9 in different solvents, and a lower limit of ΔG431≠ 〉 106 kJmol-1mol-1 for the barrier to racemization of the pentatetraene 7 is determined. The known rotational barriers of cumulenes are compared with theoretical values. The rotational barriers decrease monotonously and not alternating with increasing number of cumulated double bonds. Solvent, concentration, and substituents are of minor influence on the barriers to rotation. From the barrier of the hexapentaene 9 the resonance energy of the pentadienyl radical 12 can be estimated to be 83.7 kJmol-1, in good agreement with values from literature.
Notes:
