Summary The equations necessary for the determination of the harmonic flux and current waves, with special consideration of multiple armature reaction, are dealt with. When the coil groups are series connected armature reactions up to the tertiary are present, while with parallel connection the quaternary also appears. Equalizers effekt the harmonic flux waves considerably. Machines with a difference in number of slots |Z 1−Z 2|=0,2p, 4p ... posses the same harmonic flux waves whether the coil groups are parallel or series connected. The solution of an infinite number of simultaneous complex equations yields the fundamental and harmonic stator and rotor currents, but it is permissible to limit the solution to that of 12...20 equations. Torque considerations bring to light previously undiscovered asynchronous dips in the speed — torque curve and show that reduction of harmonic line currents, to satisfy ripple control requirements, is equivalent to the reduction unfavourable synchronous crawling torques. To obtain a numerical evaluation of the results several solutions of 14 simultaneous complex equations were carried out and the effect of slot skewing on the harmonic currents and synchronous crawling torques established, for various short — pitch windings. Measurements were made for the purpose of comparison. Like the theoretical analysis, these too showed that, with a certain number of slots, the speed — torque characteristic is considerably better with star connected than with delta connected windings.
Notes:
