    Description: Die Verweilzeitberechnung ist eine sehr anschauliche Methode zur Bewertung der Geschütztheit einer Wasserfassung oder eines Grundwasserleiters. Sie berücksichtigt alle relevanten Einflussfaktoren und ist aus Sicht der Autoren anderen Verfahren zur Geschütztheitsbewertung vorzuziehen. Es wird eine Methode vorgestellt, mit der die Geschütztheit der Wasserfassungen im Raum Pasewalk bewertet wurde und die auch landesweit anwendbar ist. Die methodischen Grundlagen von Verweilzeitberechnungen werden untersucht und spezifiziert und es erfolgt eine Diskussion der Interpolationsmöglichkeiten.

    Description: Die quantitative Landschaftsökologie beschäftigt sich mit der räumlichen Abgrenzung von Landschaftsstrukturen auf unterschiedlichen räumlichen Skalen sowie mit den dort beobachtbaren Wechselwirkungen zwischen der belebten und unbelebten Umwelt. Obwohl die Landschaftsökologie in ihrem Ursprung eine terrestrisch orientierte Fachdisziplin ist, sollten deren Methoden auch auf den aquatischen Bereich übertragbar sein, denn auch hier existieren in Abhängigkeit der topografischen, hydrografischen und sedimentologischen Voraussetzungen in sich homogene Lebensraumstrukturen, die man als Landschaften auffassen kann. Ein sich entwickelnder Bedarf an geeigneten planerischen Methoden und Konzepten im marinen Umweltmonitoring ergibt sich aus aktuellem Anlass: Am 17. Juni 2008 wurde die Meeresstrategie-Rahmenrichtlinie (MSRL) durch Beschluss des Europäischen Parlaments und des Rates in der Europäischen Union eingeführt. Die MSRL zielt auf eine umweltgerechte Bewirtschaftung der Meere ab und strebt die Erlangung eines Guten Umweltzustands in den europäischen Meeren bis 2020 an. Mit der Richtlinie erhöhen sich die Anforderungen an die Planung und Überwachung des Zustands der marinen Gewässer in Europa. Neben einer Anfangsbewertung der Meeresgebiete der Mitgliedsstaaten sowie der darauf aufbauenden Festlegung des Guten Umweltzustands anhand abiotischer und biotischer Merkmale und von Umweltzielen sollen auch Maßnahmen zur Erreichung dieser Ziele umgesetzt werden. Der Erfolg dieser Maßnahmen soll durch eine Überwachung des Zustands der Meeresgebiete begleitet werden. Entsprechende Monitoring-Programme sollen eine laufende Bewertung des Umweltzustands anhand chemisch-physikalischer und biologischer Merkmale zulassen. Im Hinblick auf die Planung landschaftsökologisch repräsentativer, auf die Optimierung von Suffizienz- und Effizienzkriterien ausgerichteter Umweltmessnetze in der deutschen Nordsee widmet sich vorliegende Habilitationsschrift der Überprüfung der Übertragbarkeit zweier Methoden der quantitativen Landschaftsökologie in den marinen Raum am Beispiel der deutschen Nordsee. Neben der datenbasierten Ableitung landschaftsökologischer Raumgliederungen für den erweiterten Bereich der deutschen Nordsee mittels statistischer Methoden steht dabei die für die Erfassung des Landschaftshaushalts landschaftsökologisch repräsentative Planung stoffbezogener Umweltmessnetze im Mittelpunkt.
    Description: Quantitative landscape ecology is concerned with the regional classification of landscape structures on various spatial scales, including the here observed interactions between the biological and abiotic environment. Despite the fact that landscape ecology has originally been a terrestrial research field, its methods should be applicable to the aquatic environment. Depending on the prevailing topographical, hydrographical, and sedimentological conditions, homogeneous benthic habitat structures, which we may be referred to as landscapes, do exist here as well. A developing demand for adequate planning methods and concepts in the field of marine environmental monitoring ensues in the light of current events. On July 17, 2008 the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) was introduced by a resolution of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. The MSFD is targeted on an environmentally sound management of European oceans and aims at achieving a Good Environmental Status (GES) for European marine waters by the year 2020. The directive increases marine planning requirements with respect to monitoring the condition of marine waters in Europe. Apart from an initial assessment of the marine areas of the member states and the ensuing determination of the GES with regard to biotic and abiotic characteristics, as well as the definition of environmental objectives, adequate measures to reach these goals shall also be implemented. The success of these measures is to be accompanied by monitoring activities with regard to the chemical, physical and biological parameters of the marine environment. The question of where to monitor is decided for and discussed within the German Marine Monitoring Programme of the federation and the federal states. Taking the extended area of the German North Sea as an example, the habilitation thesis here submitted focuses on verifying the transferability of two application areas of terrestrial quantitative landscape ecology to the marine environment in order to assist the planning of monitoring networks in Germany’s marine waters. Next to the data-based derivation of landscape ecoregionalizations by means of statistical methods, another focus is set on the landscape-ecologically representative planning of substance based environmental monitoring networks.

Als Ergebnis entstanden seit 1990 mehrere moderne Informationssysteme, Kartenwerke und andere Produkte. Neben der Publikation von analogen Karten erfolgt in den letzten Jahren verstärkt eine digitale Informationsbereitstellung in Form von digitalen Produkten; verstärkt werden auch Informationen über das Kartenportal Umwelt in der Internetpräsentation des Landesamtes veröffentlicht (www.umweltkarten.mv-regierung.de).

    Description: The paper presents results of multiproxy-investigations of a 3 m long sediment section from the Glowe Palaeolake, covering the period Pre-Bølling to the middle of the Preboreal. The Lateglacial and early Holocene landscape development comprising climate fluctuations, lake evolution, lake-level variations and vegetation history is reconstructed using pollen, diatom, macrofossil, molluscs as well as sedimentological and geochemical data based on 14C-dating. The palaeolake appeared due to the decay of the permafrost during the Bølling and developed in the Allerød into a 3–4 m deep, species-poor and macrophyte-rich stillwater. The submerse vegetation and fauna decreased during the Younger Dryas, but returned fast and with higher density in the Preboreal. Phases of cooler climate can be parallelized with the Gerzensee oscillation, the Younger Dryas and the Rammelbeek oscillation, which each are palynologically bipartite. In contrast, indications for the Older Dryas were only scarce. The cooler phases were characterized by intensified allochthonous clastic input into the lake. During the Younger Dryas the input was dominated by solifluction processes, while during the Allerød and the Preboreal predominantly fluvial processes occurred. The most significant changes in the palaeoecology of the lake were caused by the rapid warming at the onset of the Preboreal. During the phases of warmer climate the vegetation development was influenced by the vicinity to the Baltic Ice Lake, which caused – compared to more southerly regions – a delayed spread of Pinus. Also, the long term climate changes determined the alterations in the chemical sediment composition, the diatom flora and the macrophyte vegetation. Short term variations, which caused the closely spaced sediment layering mainly in the older part of the sediment section cannot be explained so far. The course of the outcropping stratigraphic units was used to construct a lake-level curve. It shows a rapid rise in the early Allerød and a subsequent slower rise until the highstand in the Younger Dryas. In the early Preboreal, a fast lake-level fall occurred, the palaeolake silted up and dried out in the middle of the Preboreal.

    Description: Das ehemalige Gaswerk liegt innerhalb der Stadt Neubrandenburg „Am Güterbahnhof“, umgeben von Altbausubstanz mit gewerblicher Nutzung und Wohnbebauung. Die Produktion von Stadtgas aus Steinkohle begann hier 1867. Eine Erweiterung erfolgte im Ersten Weltkrieg durch die Inbetriebnahme einer Wassergasanlage zur Streckung des Steinkohlengases, einer Benzolgewinnungsanlage und einer Sulfatfabrik. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg kam es zur Zerstörung der drei Gasbehälter und von Teilen der Bebauung. Nach 1945 wurde das Gaswerk mit einem Gasbehälter wieder aufgebaut. In den letzten Nutzungsjahren traten zahlreiche Havarien durch übergelaufene Teer- und Ammoniakgruben sowie durch verstopfte Leitungen auf. 1971 erfolgten die Stilllegung des Gaswerkes und ein teilweiser Rückbau der oberirdischen Anlagen.

    Description: Bei dem für die Eugen-Geinitz-Sicht in Usadel ausgewählten Findling (Fundort: vermutlich Kiesgrube Siedenbüssow) handelt es sich um ein seltenes monomiktes Konglomerat, dessen Herkunft – und damit auch sein Bildungsalter – bisher nicht genau bestimmt werden kann. In einer sandigen bis feinkiesigen, rötlich-violetten Matrix befinden sich zahlreiche helle, mäßig gerundete Gesteinsbruchstücke bis 12 cm Größe aus kristallinem Quarz (Gangquarz). Konglomerate mit einer ähnlichen Zusammensetzung sind als lokale Einschaltungen in mesoproterozoischen Sandsteinen und Grauwacken an der Hohen Küste in Nordschweden bekannt und möglicherweise als isolierte Vorkommen im gesamten Verbreitungsgebiet jotnischer Rotsedimente zu finden. Aufgrund der Zusammensetzung und des relativ geringen Verfestigungsgrades kann aber auch eine Zuordnung zur klastischen Abfolge der jüngstproterozoisch-unterkambrischen Nexö-Formation Bornholms nicht völlig ausgeschlossen werden, deren basale Schichten ebenfalls unter terrestrischen, oxidativen Bedingungen abgelagert wurden.

    Description: The sedimentary and morphological evidence for Lateglacial glacier fluctuations in the Lienz area provides a strong case against the currently used pentapartite stratigraphic subdivision of the Alpine Lateglacial (ALG; c. 19–11.7 ka) i.e. the timespan between the Würmian Pleniglacial (= Alpine Last Glacial Maximum; AlpLGM) and the beginning of the Holocene. The results of comprehensive geological mapping (including the detection of mass movements) supported by geochronological data and pollen analysis revealed that the ALG- record of the Schobergruppe mountains and the Lienz Dolomites can be subdivided into four unconformity-bounded (allostratgraphic) units which are linked to three climatostratigraphically-defined phases of glacier activity. Delta deposits and till of local glaciers document the phase of ice-decay after the AlpLGM. Between this period and the Bølling/Allerød (B/A) interstadial only one glacier stabilisation with massive end moraines, correlated with the Gschnitz stadial, is evident. Multiple end moraines prove the presence of very active glacier tongues during the Younger Dryas aged Egesen stadial. The 10Be exposure dating of an end moraine, previously attributed to the Daun stadial (pre-B/A interstadial) based on ΔELA values, provided an age of 12.8 ± 0.6 ka indicating it is of Younger Dryas age. This case highlights the pitfalls of the commonly used ΔELA-based stratigraphic ALG subdivision and the subsequent derivation of palaeoclimatic implications. ΔELAs are still considered as a useful tool for correlation on the local scale e.g. in one mountain group with a quite comparable topography and lithology and taking into account the limitations, especially the impact of debris cover. However, our results show that a stratigraphic correlation across the whole Alpine chain via ΔELAs is not a successful approach potentially leading to bias and, eventually, to circular arguments.

    Description: Nachweise von 106 Arten der Kurzflügelkäfer in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) zwischen 1989 und 2016 werden dokumentiert und diskutiert. Anhand aktueller Nachweise mit dem Autokescher wird die Verbreitung und Häufigkeit einiger Arten in MV neu bewertet. Zwei Arten sind neu für die Fauna des Bundeslandes: 〈i〉Cousya longitarsis〈/i〉 (Thomson, 1867) and 〈i〉Philonthus ebeninus〈/i〉 (Gravenhorst, 1802). Xerotherme Standorte, sandige Ufer von Fließgewässern und Salzwiesen sind in MV selten bzw. werden oftmals massiv beeinträchtigt. Diese Habitate beherbergen jedoch eine Vielzahl ökologisch anspruchsvoller Arten und sollten deshalb besonders geschützt werden.

    Description: This article presents investigations of a diverse landscape in the young moraine area of southeastern Schleswig-Holstein (Stormarn county). The northern part of the study area represents a large basin, possibly a glacier basin influenced by glaciofluvial meltwaters or by dead ice. Organic sedimentation occurred in this basin from the Late-glacial (Bölling/Alleröd interstadial complex), followed by a longer lake phase and the growth of a fen after c. 5.000 14C a B.P. The central area of the basin was formed as ice-disintegration landscape – including kames, eskers and esker-like features. Ring-like glaciofluvial landform structures are interpreted as subcircular eskers. Kettle bogs developed in the centres of these landforms from c. 5.000 14C a BP (Atlantic/Subboreal) onwards. The southern and south-eastern part of the study area represents a smoothed moraine zone, that includes a glaciotectonically influenced Saalian core of till, sand and glacilacustrine sediment. Parallel aligned gullies were predominantly formed as tunnel valleys. Some parts of the channels are infilled with glaciolacustrine clays. Several channels, asymmetric in cross-profile, were shaped by periglacial slope denudation.

    Description: The “Hötting Breccia” near Innsbruck is a classic interglacial mountain-flank succession mainly comprising lithified alluvial fans and scree slopes. Directly NW of Innsbruck, a pre-LGM (Riss?) basal till 〉20 m in thickness overlies a plucked rock surface that records eastward ice flow. The till is dominated by clasts of carbonate rocks from the Northern Calcareous Alps; index clasts of the LGM ice stream are absent. The basal till is overlain by a package of conglomerate nearly 1 km in preserved lateral extent that dip at 20–30° South and show the same clast spectrum as the underlying till. The conglomerate – hitherto assigned to the Hötting Breccia – accumulated from fan deltas and/or scree slopes shed into a standing water body; it is overlain by younger, unlithified LGM to Holocene deposits. We suggest the following scenario: During decay of the ice stream that formed the basal till, the conglomerate package was deposited by paraglacial reworking of till into a lake or ice-marginal lake. The alluvial fans of the Hötting Breccia accumulated independently from the conglomerate package, and from a distinct alluvial-fan system. The age relation of the till/conglomerate package to the main part of the Hötting Breccia is unclear. Our results demonstrate that the rocks hitherto summarized as Hötting Breccia represent a compound of lithosomes of different origins and ages.

    Description: Internationally, the description and interpretation of glacial sediments and landforms largely follow a set of uniform guidelines and terminology. Sediments are normally described according to their lithofacies characteristics (e.g. diamicton, sorted sands), and only after closer inspection and investigation are genetic terms applied (e.g. till, glaciofluvial outwash). Mixing of sedimentological and geomorphological terminology does not occur. In German-speaking countries, however, the term moraine is used for glaciogenic sediments and landforms such as end moraines and also adopted for till plains (“ground moraine landscapes”, “old/young morainic landscapes” etc.). Similar traditions of the latter kind are sometimes found as a relict in Scandinavian texts, and an equally profound mixing of terms is found in much of the French literature. The authors argue here that this mixture not only leads to unnecessary confusion for students but also makes international communication more difficult, especially when the terminological inconsistencies are as extensive and non-systematic as in the German community at present. The present paper presents a systematic overview of the state-of-the-art of till terminology, thereby providing the necessary background information for a useful description and interpretation of field evidence for communicating results in German and hopefully aiding more efficient communication of German Quaternary geologists and geomorphologists internationally. The aim is to provide a sedimentological terminology that is in agreement with international standards and can readily be distinguished from geomorphological vocabulary. The authors recommend that usage of the term ground moraine, for example, is restricted to certain landform associations encountered in NW Central Europe, and excluded from use when discussing sediments. For primary glaciogenic sediments sensu stricto the term till should be used only where appropriate sedimentological evidence exists. A process-based subdivision of till types (e.g. deformation, lodgement till) is not useful in most cases, because as a community we do not have the tools to reliably distinguish such processes at a macro-scale. This recognition has led to the creation of the highly useful umbrella term subglacial traction till and its distinction from overridden primary sediments that are termed glaciotectonite. The present contribution translates the older terminology to the internationally-accepted terminology that follows the scientifically-robust approach of splitting descriptive terminology – based on a lithofacies approach (e.g. diamicton) – from the latter interpretative stage (e.g. subglacial traction till, debris flow deposit). The authors present translations of the different till schemes that have existed through time and link these to the current state of the art, citing several examples and clear diagnostic criteria to distinguish various types of diamictic sediments. This contribution stresses that the majority of diamictons encountered in glacial environments, especially in ice-marginal settings, are not usually and certainly not automatically subglacial traction tills.

    Description: Um das Jahr 1540 erließen die Herren zu Franckenstein und die Herren von Heusenstamm eine Bergordnung für die Bergwerke in Espa im Taunus. Als Vorlage für diese Bergordnung diente eine Abschrift der Bergordnung der Grafen von Hohnstein vom 3. Februar 1528 für die Bergwerke in der Grafschaft Lauterberg. Es wurden aber nicht alle Paragrafen übernommen. Es fehlen eine Abschlusserklärung mit den Anwendungsbestimmungen sowie ein Datum zum Erlass dieser Bergordnung. Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich bei dieser Bergordnung um einen unveröffentlichten Entwurf. Eine weitere Bergordnung für dieses Gebiet ist aber nicht bekannt.

    Description: Im Jahr 1529 erließ Herzog Georg von Sachsen eine neue Bergordnung für die Bergwerke in Freiberg. Im Gegensatz zum Erzgebirge, wo die 1509 erlassene Annaberger Bergordnung allgemeine Gültigkeit erlangt hatte, beharrte der Rat zu Freiberg auf ein in Teilen eigenständiges Bergrecht für die Stadt. Die Freiberger Bergordnung wurde vom Rat zu Freiberg gemeinsam mit den Gewerken im Beisein von Herzog Georg erstellt. In den 38 Artikeln wurde im Wesentlichen der Inhalt der Annaberger Bergordnung wiederholt. Neu für Freiberg war die Abrechnung und Austeilung sowie Veranschlagung der Zubuße in einem festgesetzten Zeitraum. Im Gegensatz zur Abrechnung in vier Quartalen, wie es im Erzgebirge seit 1476 Vorschrift war, erfolgte diese in Freiberg zu drei Terminen im Jahr. Weiterhin wurde darauf verwiesen, dass die Freiberger Bergbeamten die Eide analog der Annaberger Bergordnung leisten sollten.

    Description: Specialization in agricultural systems can lead to trade-offs between economic gains and ecosystem functions. We suggest and explore a conceptual framework in which economic gains can be maximized when production activities are specialized at increasingly broader scales (from the household to the village, region or above), particularly when markets for outputs and inputs function well. Conversely,more specialization likely reduces biodiversity and significantly limits ecosystem functions. When agricultural specialization increases and moves to broader scales as a result of improved infrastructure and markets or other drivers, ecosystem functions can also be endangered at broader spatial scales. Policies to improve agricultural incomes may influence the level of specialization at different scales and thus affect the severity of the trade-offs. This paper takes Jambi province in Indonesia, a current hotspot of rubber and oil palm monoculture, as a case study to illustrate these issues.We empirically show that the level of specialization differs across scales with higher specialization at household and village levels and higher diversification towards the province level. We discuss ways to resolve trade-offs between economic gains and ecological costs, including landscape design, targeted policies, and adoption of longterm perspectives.

    Description: Conversions of natural ecosystems, e.g., from rain forests to managed plantations, result in significant changes in the hydrological cycle including periodic water scarcity. In Indonesia, large areas of forest were lost and extensive oil palm plantations were established over the last decades. We conducted a combined social and environmental study in a region of recent land-use change, the Jambi Province on Sumatra. The objective was to derive complementary lines of arguments to provide balanced insights into environmental perceptions and eco-hydrological processes accompanying land-use change. Interviews with villagers highlighted concerns regarding decreasing water levels in wells during dry periods and increasing fluctuations in stream flow between rainy and dry periods. Periodic water scarcity was found to severely impact livelihoods, which increased social polarization. Sap flux measurements on forest trees and oil palms indicate that oil palm plantations use as much water as forests for transpiration. Eddy covariance analyses of evapotranspiration over oil palm point to substantial additional sources of evaporation in oil palm plantations such as the soil and epiphytes. Stream base flow from a catchment dominated by oil palms was lower than from a catchment dominated by rubber plantations; both showed high peaks after rainfall. An estimate of erosion indicated approximately 30 cm of topsoil loss after forest conversion to both oil palm and rubber plantations. Analyses of climatic variables over the last 20 years and of a standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index for the last century suggested that droughts are recurrent in the area, but have not increased in frequency or intensity. Consequently, we assume that conversions of rain forest ecosystems to oil palm plantations lead to a redistribution of precipitated water by runoff, which leads to the reported periodic water scarcity. Our combined social and environmental approach points to significant and thus far neglected eco-hydrological consequences of oil palm expansion.

    Description: Oil palm plantations have expanded rapidly in recent decades. This large-scale land-use change has had great ecological, economic, and social impacts on both the areas converted to oil palm and their surroundings. However, research on the impacts of oil palm cultivation is scattered and patchy, and no clear overview exists. We address this gap through a systematic and comprehensive literature review of all ecosystem functions in oil palm plantations, including several (genetic, medicinal and ornamental resources, information functions) not included in previous systematic reviews. We compare ecosystem functions in oil palm plantations to those in forests, as the conversion of forest to oil palm is prevalent in the tropics. We find that oil palm plantations generally have reduced ecosystem functioning compared to forests: 11 out of 14 ecosystem functions show a net decrease in level of function. Some functions show decreases with potentially irreversible global impacts (e.g. reductions in gas and climate regulation, habitat and nursery functions, genetic resources, medicinal resources, and information functions). The most serious impacts occur when forest is cleared to establish new plantations, and immediately afterwards, especially on peat soils. To variable degrees, specific plantation management measures can prevent or reduce losses of some ecosystem functions (e.g. avoid illegal land clearing via fire, avoid draining of peat, use of integrated pest management, use of cover crops, mulch, and compost) and we highlight synergistic mitigation measures that can improve multiple ecosystem functions simultaneously. The only ecosystem function which increases in oil palm plantations is, unsurprisingly, the production of marketable goods. Our review highlights numerous research gaps. In particular, there are significant gaps with respect to socio-cultural information functions. Further, there is a need for more empirical data on the importance of spatial and temporal scales, such as differences among plantations in different environments, of different sizes, and of different ages, as our review has identified examples where ecosystem functions vary spatially and temporally. Finally, more research is needed on developing management practices that can offset the losses of ecosystem functions. Our findings should stimulate research to address the identified gaps, and provide a foundation for more systematic research and discussion on ways to minimize the negative impacts and maximize the positive impacts of oil palm cultivation.

    Description: Tropical lowland rainforests are increasingly threatened by the expansion of agriculture and the extraction of natural resources. In Jambi Province, Indonesia, the interdisciplinary EFForTS project focuses on the ecological and socio-economic dimensions of rainforest conversion to jungle rubber agroforests and monoculture plantations of rubber and oil palm. Our data confirm that rainforest transformation and land use intensification lead to substantial losses in biodiversity and related ecosystem functions, such as decreased above- and below-ground carbon stocks. Owing to rapid step-wise transformation from forests to agroforests to monoculture plantations and renewal of each plantation type every few decades, the converted land use systems are continuously dynamic, thus hampering the adaptation of animal and plant communities. On the other hand, agricultural rainforest transformation systems provide increased income and access to education, especially for migrant smallholders. Jungle rubber and rubber monocultures are associated with higher financial land productivity but lower financial labour productivity compared to oil palm, which influences crop choice: smallholders that are labour-scarce would prefer oil palm while land-scarce smallholders would prefer rubber. Collecting long-term data in an interdisciplinary context enables us to provide decision-makers and stakeholders with scientific insights to facilitate the reconciliation between economic interests and ecological sustainability in tropical agricultural landscapes.

Der Innvorlandgletscher, der nur wie ein größerer Bruder des Salzachvorlandgletschers war, bietet zahlreiche Entsprechungen und Vergleichsmomente. Das überfahrene Frühwürm, auf das ein Rückzug bis an den Alpenrand folgte, die Laufenschwankung oder das Aurignac-Interstadial, das große Hauptwürm mit seinen drei Endmoränensystemen und dazugehörigen Erscheinungen und der besonders deutlich klimatisch bestimmte Einschnitt des beginnenden Spätwürm mit den peripher gesammelten Schmelzwässern, den ersten Eis Stauseen und späteren Schmelzwasserseen sind wahrscheinlich in allen nordalpinen Vorlandgletschern wieder zu erkennen.

    Description: Abstract: Several times already areas of a rhyolitic rocky coast were found at the Steigerberg gravel pit near Eckelsheim in the course of excavation of Oligocene Coastal Sediments of the Alzey Formation ("Unterer Meeressand"). Back then, the Steigerberg was an island near the Western coast of the Mainz Basin. In 2012, a rhyolitic surf holder with extraordinary symmetrical erosion tracks, possibly caused by boring activities of molluscs, came to light during the extension of the pit.

    Description: Die verschiedenen Projektphasen bei Planung und Herstellung einer geothermischen Heizungsanlage für ein Einfamilienhaus in Rheinhessen mit einem Untergrund aus tertiären kalkigen Tonen, Mergeln, feinkörnigen Sanden und Kalksteinen werden beschrieben und die bisherigen Erfahrungen mitgeteilt. Die im Internet und in Druckschriften verfügbaren Informationen zur Planung und Bemessung sind unbedingt durch projektbezogenen geologischen Sachverstand zu ergänzen. Die bisher 4-jährige Laufzeit der Anlage verlief ohne Komplikationen. Durch eine Verbindung der geothermischen Heizung mit einer Stromerzeugung durch Fotovoltaik konnte die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Systems nochmals erheblich verbessert werden. Im regionalen Umfeld ist die zahl der neu installierten Heizungssysteme mit Geothermie seit Jahren rückläufig. Dies kann eventuell auf die nicht mehr verfügbare öffentliche Förderung und höhere Investitionskosten gegenüber konventionellen Heizungssystemen zurückgeführt werden.
    Description: Abstract: As regards the planning and construction of a geothermal heating for a single family house in Rheinhessen (regional district in the western surroundings of Mainz, capital of the federal state Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany), the individual project phases are described and information on experience available to date is provided. The subsoil of the respective area consists of tertiary calcareous clays, marls, finegrained sands and limestones. Information on planning and dimensioning derived from the internet or print media, should be complemented by project-related geological expertise. The geothermal heating system described has not faced any down-times during its 4-year operational time. The economic output of the system was considerably improved by combining geothermal heating with electricity generated by photovoltaic panels. Since a couple of years the number of newly installed geothermal heating systems has decreased in the regional surroundings. This is probably related to a lack of public subsidies and higher investment cost as compared to conventional heating systems.

    Description: Die Kugelbildungen in der pfälzischen Oberen Felszone („Kugelfelshorizont") und die Röhrenhöhlen stehen beide in einem genetischen Zusammenhang mit der linksrheinischen Randlage des saar-pfälzischen Buntsandsteins. Dort dominierte in der Untertrias ein grobklastischer fluviatiler Randsaum, der einige Male von sehr seichten, salinar vorkonzentrierten Wässern geflutet wurde, wodurch das chemische Milieu der Porenwässer im Sedimentkörper verändert und angereichert wurden. Diese Wässer konnten bei Meeresspiegelhochständen kurzzeitig aus dem Beckenzentrum im Norden und Nordosten in die proximalen Beckenrandbereiche Vordringen. Insbesondere die weit durchhaltenden stratigraphischen Niveaus von Violetten Horizonten (Zonen) - auch und vor allem die Violette Grenzzone am Top des Mittleren Buntsandsteins - markieren Hochstandsereignisse des fernen Meeres. Es handelt sich dabei nicht in erster Linie um Sedimentationsunterbrechungen. Die klastische Vorschüttung vom Gallischen Land im Südwesten wurde synsedimentär tektonisch gesteuert, alt angelegte Senkungsbereiche mit erzgebirgischem Streichen (WSW-ENE) bilden sich ab. Kugelfelsen treten in mehreren stratigraphischen Niveaus des Unteren und Mittleren Buntsandsteins auf. Zusammenhänge mit temporären, karbonatisch-salinaren Beeinflussungen sind jeweils vorhanden. Der in der Beckenrandregion vorgegebene fluviatile Sedimentkörper wurde dabei frühdiagenetisch überprägt. Die Kugelbildungen gehen auf inzwischen ausgewitterte Karbonatgehalte zurück. Sie entstanden schon in der Untertrias, in einem frühen Stadium der Diagenese, als phreatische Calcretes bzw. Dolocretes. Es sind Grundwasser-Bildungen mit typischen anorganischen Alpha-Gefügen. Die Röhrenhöhlen bzw. die einzelnen Röhrenstrukturen sind die Resultate einer Sandstein-Verkarstung im zeitlichen Grenzbereich Spätmesozoikum/Frühkänozoikum, bei (sub-)-tropischem Klima. Sie entstanden bei der Quarzlösung durch saure, Huminstoff-reiche Grundwässer. Bei bevorzugter Auflösung der Quarzzemente kam es zur Sandkorn-Vereinzelung (Arenitisierung), zum Ausspülen von Röhren (Piping) und zur Entwicklung eines zum Altrhein im Osten gerichteten Karstsystems. An den Röhrenwandungen bildeten sich im Grundwasserbereich Kiesel-, Eisen- und Huminsäurekrusten. Bei einer genaueren Betrachtung und Bewertung aller von Röhrenhöhlen bekannten, recht komplexen Fakten, lässt sich dafür ein widerspruchsfreies genetisches Gesamtmodell entwickeln. Die einzelnen Röhrenstrukturen folgten damaligen Kluftrichtungen. Dadurch konservierten sie das Abbild eines alten Strukturinventars. Dies wurde vor allem von der erzgebirgischen WSW-ENE-Richtung dominiert, die vom variskisch deformierten Unterlager durchgepaust war. Röhrenhöhlen-Korridore zeichnen alte, erzgebirgisch ausgerichtete Tiefschollen nach. Hinweise auf das Entstehungsalter dieser Karstformen ergeben sich aus der statistischen Verteilung der Röhren-Längsachsen-Richtungen. Vergleicht man diese mit den für Südwest-Deutschland bekannten tektonischen Deformationsereignissen, so lässt sich ein Entstehungszeitraum zwischen spätester Oberkreide und frühestem Eozän einengen. Auf diese Weise ergeben sich Hinweise auf die Ausgestaltung des linksrheinischen Deckgebirges vor der tertiären Oberrheingraben- Tektogenese.
    Description: Abstract: The spherical forms in the Obere Felszone (Middle Buntsandstein) and the tube-shaped caves of Palatinate were caused resp. influenced by the border Situation of the Buntsandstein left of the Rhine. Düring Lower Triassic a coarse fluvial marginal facies dominated there. Several times this region has been flooded by very shallow pre-concentrated saliferous waters. Thereby the chemical environments of the porewaters in the Sediment body were changed and enriched. Düring wide-ranging highstands of the sea level these waters could intrude briefly from the northern and northeastern center to the (proximal) marginal zones of the Palatinate basin. Especially the very expansive Stratigraphie units of violet horizons or zones and mainly the Violette Grenzzone at the top of Middle Buntsandstein indicate highstands of the far off sea. They were not primarily caused by interruptions of Sedimentation. The clastic Sedimentation from the Gallic Land in the Southwest was controlled by slow synsedimentary tectonic movements, old WSW-ENE striking troughs are documented. Rocks with spherical segregations appear in several Stratigraphie units of Lower and Middle Buntsandstein. Connections with temporary carbonatic-hypersaline influences exist. The fluviatile Sediment succession which existed in the marginal area has been overprinted by this during early diagenesis. The sphere-shaped structures resulted from carbonate contents which have been washed out in the meantime. They already generated during Lower Triassic, as phreatic calcretes resp. dolocretes. They represent groundwater- produced formations with typical inorganic Alpha fabrics. The tube-shaped caves resp. the individual tube structures resulted from the karstification of sandstones. This happened under (sub-)tropical climatic conditions, which existed during late mesozoic/ cenozoic times. They generated by dissolution of quartz, caused by acidic groundwaters, rieh in humins. Quartz-cements were dissoluted preferentially. This caused a singularization of the sand grains (arenitization) and a rinsing of tubes (piping). Akarstic System developed, directed to the old precursor of the Rhine River. At the tube walls silcretes and iron- resp. humin-crusts were precipitated by groundwaters. By valuation of all facts known about the tube-shaped caves, being quite complex, a consistent model can be generated. The individual tubes followed the joint sets which existed at that time. An old structural inventory was conserved by this. It was dominated by the WSW-ENE-direction. This had been traced from the basement which was deformed during the variscan orogeny. Corridors of tube-shaped caves follow old WSW-ENE striking, narrow downthrown blocks in the underlying basement. The age of these karstifikation forms can be deduced from the Statistical distribution of directions of the tube axes. The development phase can be reconstructed by comparing these old directions with the tectonic deformation phases known from southwestern Germany. The resulting time span is latest Upper Cretaceous tili early Eocene. Moreover some informations concerning the structural state of the palatinian mountains before the evolution of the Upper Rhine Graben System can be gained.

    Description: Die Obere Felszone der Pfalz wird nach den darin enthaltenen frühdiagenetischen Kugelbildungen (vgl. dazu Dittrich 2016) oft auch Kugelfelszone genannt. Sie kann Äquivalente der Detfurth- und der Hardegsen-Formation umfassen (s4-und s5-Folge). Mehrere Meter mächtige fluviatile sandige Detfurth-Äquivalente mit einer konglomeratischen Basis beschränken sich auf strukturtiefe Profile in ehemaligen linksrheinischen Trogachsen. Durch die D-Diskordanz wurden die oberen Abschnitte der Volpriehausen-Formation (s3-Folge) gekappt, transportiert und resedimentiert. Es handelte sich um proximale Äquivalente der Aviculaschichten. Hardegsen- Äquivalente, oft mit Kugelbildungen, sind durch eine regionale Erosionsdiskordanz abgetrennt. In vollständigeren Trogachsenprofilen erscheint eine eher konkordante Diskontinuitätsfläche s4/s5. Durch die inzwischen vorliegende deutsche Buntsandstein-Synopsis (DSK 2013) wurde die stratigraphische Bewertung zahlreicher neu erhobener Befunde im pfälzischen Randbecken unterstützt. Für die s4/s5-Diskordanz ist anstelle des fehlerbehafteten neuen Begriffs „Trulbe-Diskordanz" der Name „Harsberg-Diskordanz7/ vorzuziehen.
    Description: Abstract: The palatinian stratigraphic unit Obere Felszone is sometimes called Kugelfelszone. This refers to ball structures that have formed during early diagenesis (compare Dittrich 2016). This unit can comprise equivalents of s4 and s5 (Detfurth and Hardegsen Formation). Several meters thick fluvial sandstones with a basal conglomerate (Detfurth Formation) are restricted to structurally controled old trough positions. Connected with the D-discordance the upper parts of the Volpriehausen Formation were cut, transported and resedimented. They had represented proximal equivalents of the Avicula beds. Equivalents of s5, offen with ball structures, overlie a regional erosional discordance. Profiles of subsiding areas show a nearly concordant discontinuity surface instead. The now available synopsis of the german Buntsandstein (DSK 2013) supported the stratigraphical interpretation of several new geological data concerning the palatinian marginal part of the basin. For the s4/s5 discordance („Trulbe discordance" in DSK 2013) the more correct name „Harsberg discordance" is proposed here.

    Description: Zusammenfassung In Deutschland sind magmatogene (magmatische, pegmatitische), hydrothermogene (pneumatolytische, hydrothermale), chemogene (zementative, infiltrative) und klastogene (Seifen-) Uran-Vorkommen bekannt. Bergbaulich gewonnen wurde Uran hierzulande bisher aus hydrothermalen, zementativen und infiltrativen Lagerstätten. Einige dieser Lagerstätten in Sachsen und Thüringen gehören zu den bedeutendsten ihrer Art in der Welt. Im Ergebnis von 45 Jahren Bergbautätigkeit und den anschließenden 25 Jahren Sanierungsarbeiten entstanden unzählige unter- und übertägige Aufschlüsse sowie eine Vielzahl von geowissenschaftlichen Arbeiten. Dennoch sind einige Fragen zur Entstehung dieser Lagerstätten, insbesondere was die Herkunft des Urans betrifft, nach wie vor umstritten. Dieser Beitrag ist ein Versuch, ein geochemisch, mineralogisch und lagerstättenkundlich plausibles Gesamtmodell der Genese der deutschen Uranlagerstätten zu entwerfen. Dabei spielen Sapropelite eine besondere Rolle als Metallquellen des Urans. But only hydrothermal and supergene deposits were mined in this country. Some of these deposits in Saxony and Thuringia belong to the most important of its kind in the world. After 45 years of mining activity followed by 25 years of renovation many underground and surface exposures were originated and scientific publications were written. Nevertheless some features of the genesis of these deposits and particularly the origin of uranium are still controversially. This paper is an attempt to sketch a geochemical, mineralogical and geological plausible general model of the genesis of the uranium deposits in Germany. Sapropelites are of particular importance as sources of uranium.

    Description: Bei hydraulischen und hydrochemischen Untersuchungen zur geothermischen Nutzung gefluteter Erzbergwerke im Rheinischen Schiefergebirge wurden Dichte-Schichtungen in einem Schacht festgestellt. Das Phänomen der Dichteschichtung in gefluteten Bergwerken ist bekannt, diese wurde jedoch meist nur durch einmalige Messungen belegt. Durch Wiederholungsmessungen zeigten sich deutliche Veränderungen in den physiko-chemischen Eigenschaften sowie der Mächtigkeit der oberen Schicht, während das Grundwasser der unteren höher mineralisierten Schicht eine annähernd gleichbleibende Beschaffenheit zeigte. Mit zunehmender Dicke und Mineralisation wurde die Auflösung der oberen Schichtung beobachtet. Durch zutretendes gering mineralisiertes Oberflächen- und Sickerwasser bildete sich jedoch in kurzer Zeit eine neue Schichtung aus.
    Description: Abstract: An abandoned flooded mine in the Rhenish Massif was investigated for geothermal reuse. Hydrogeological and hydrochemical studies indicated that the mine water body into a shaft was stratified. The phenomenon of stratification in flooded mines is already known but usually only one measurement is done. Additional recordings demonstrated that the physico-chemical qualities and the thickness of the upper layer changed. The chemical composition of the deeper layer did not modify. According to increasing thickness and mineralization of the upper layer the stratification collapsed. Caused by inflow of surface and drain water a new upper water layer developed quickly.

    Description: Seit mindestens 200 Jahren werden am Laacher See Gasaustritte in der Literatur beschrieben. Diese treten sowohl an Land als auch im Wasser auf. Während die Gasblasen im Wasser deutlich hervortreten, sind die Gasaustritte an Land häufig kaum wahrnehmbar. Um die Verbreitung der Kohlendioxid-Austritte rund um den Laacher See näher bestimmen zu können, wurden zunächst die verfügbaren Beschreibungen in der Literatur ausgewertet, die bis zum Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts zurückreichen. Im Umfeld der ehemaligen Jesuitenvilla, einem Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, das am Ostufer des Sees errichtet worden war, lieferten zahlreiche Bodenluftmessungen Informationen über die C02-Verteilung im Boden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Ausgasungen an Land deutlich häufiger anzutreffen sind, als bisher vermutet wurde. Ebenso weisen die teilweise sehr starken Mofetten im Wasser, die im Rahmen der Untersuchungen mehrfach kartiert wurden und die in der Literatur deutlich schwächer beschrieben werden, auf eine Zunahme der Ausgasungen am Laacher See hin.
    Description: Abstract: Since the 18th Century, the carbon dioxide exhalations around the Lake Laach are mentioned in the literature. The mofettes can be found in the water of the lake as well as in the wood close to the lakefront. While the exhalations in the water are easily visible, the mofettes ashore are difficult to detect. In Order to find all mofettes around the lake, the descriptions in the literature were interpreted. In addition, more than 100 soil gas measurements in the surroundings of the former "Jesuitenvilla", an abbey building from the 19th Century provided evidence of a mofette that probably caused the death of eight monks in 1871. The investigations showed that today the carbon dioxide exhalations are far more common and intense around the Lake Laach than assumed.

    Description: Die Bergordnung für Schemnitz/Banská Štiavnica wurde im Jahr 1466 als Anhang zum Stadtrecht im Stadtbuch (1432 begonnen) niedergeschrieben. Von den 59 Paragrafen waren nur die Paragrafen 42 bis 59 für das das Bergrecht relevant. Die Entstehungszeit der Bergordnung geht auf die Regierungszeit König Béla IV. (1235-1270) zurück. Nach der Einleitung durch König Béla IV. beschreiben die Geschworenen der Stadt die Verleihung von Gruben, die Rechte und Pflichten beim Betrieb der Bergwerke, das Stollenrecht und die Vermessung der Gruben. Im Gegensatz zu späteren Bergordnungen wurden hier nicht aufgetretene Fehlentwicklungen geregelt, sondern bereits klare gesetzliche Regelungen für den Bergbau vorgegeben.

    Description: In der Bohrung Moosburg 4 wurden die Nichtkarbonate (HCl-Unlösliches; 45 Proben) der Karbonatgesteine vom Malm Alpha (Unteres Oxfordium) bis zum Malm Zeta (Oberes Tithonium) röntgendiffraktometrisch untersucht. Ziel war es, die bestehende lithostratigraphische Untergliederung genauer mineralogisch und tonmineralogisch zu untermauern, um diese in Malm-Bohrungen des Molasse-Untergrundes besser belegen zu können. Die Kombination von mineralogischen und tonmineralogischen röntgenographischen Untersuchungen der Nichtkarbonate ermöglichen es, unter Bezug zum Gamma-Log der Bohrung Moosburg SC4 eine Untergliederung in neun Einheiten (I – IX) zu definieren. Diese entspricht vom Malm Alpha bis Malm Zeta 3 weitgehend der lithostratigraphischen Unterteilung, wie sie von Meyer (1994) dokumentiert wird. Die von Meyer (1994) vorgenommene Positionierung des Malm Zeta 4-5 und die der als Purbeck definierten Schichtfolge müssen dagegen revidiert werden. Die Malm/ Purbeck-Grenze ist um 99 m ins Hangende zu legen. Damit entspricht der dort im Malm analysierte Bereich dem Untertithon und dem Obertithon. Karbonatgesteine des Purbeck wurden in der vorliegenden Studie nicht untersucht. Die Zuordnung der Einheiten I-VI zu den lithostratigraphischen Einheiten von Meyer (1994) ist gut. Es ist nur der obere Teil der Bohrung Moosburg 4 als Unteres und als Oberes Tithon neu zu definieren. Allgemein kann festgestellt werden, dass eine lithostratigraphische Untergliederung des Malm auf der Basis mineralogisch/tonmineralogischer Analysen der Nichtkarbonate erstellt werden kann. Diese Methode kann daher auch in neuen Bohrungen im Molassebecken zur Untergliederung der oberjurassischen Schichtfolge erfolgreich angewendet werden.

    Description: Tiefgreifende Hangbewegungen stellen neben Muren und Lawinen, welche durch Faktoren wie Extremniederschlagsereignisse und Unterschneidungsvorgänge entstehen, eine akute Gefahr für die Bevölkerung und die Infrastruktur im alpinen Raum dar (Moser 2013). Talzuschübe, oder auch DSGSD für Deep-seated Gravitational Slope Deformation (Crosta et al. 2013), sind großflächige und tiefgreifende Hangbewegungen im alpinen Raum. Im Rahmen dieser Untersuchungen erfolgte eine ingenieurgeologische Aufnahme des Dürnbachtals bei Neukirchen am Großvenediger mit der Erstellung von Hangprofilen und der Aufnahme des Trennflächengefüges. Weiter wurde der Einfluss der beidseitigen Talzuschübe auf den Wildbach und das Murereignis nach einem Starkniederschlagsereignis am 28.07.2022 analysiert. Zuletzt wurde eine Abschätzung des Gefahrenpotentials des Dürnbachs für den Ort Neukirchen am Großvenediger erstellt.

When characterizing provenance related signatures, it is essential to understand the different factors that may influence a particular heavy‐mineral assemblage for example, chemical weathering or diagenetic processes. Hydrodynamics, causing size‐density sorting, exert major control on the distribution of heavy minerals. Here, we highlight the effect of grain‐size inheritance, essentially the absence of certain grain sizes within a specific heavy‐mineral species, on two distinct types of sediments. Modern deposits from a high‐energy beach in NW Denmark give an analog for heavily reworked sediment, primarily controlled by hydrodynamic processes. In contrast, three Palaeogene turbidite successions in the Eastern Alps were sampled, presenting a more complex history that includes diagenesis. All samples were processed for their heavy‐mineral compositions using Raman spectroscopy, and several techniques applied to determine the effect of grain‐size inheritance. Results show that (a) even within the hydrodynamically well‐sorted beach and placer deposits, evidence of grain‐size inheritance is apparent, and (b) turbidites of variable heavy‐mineral composition show strong effects of grain‐size inheritance for several mineral species. Moreover, considerable intersample contrasts within single turbidite beds are observed. We enforce the importance of understanding grain‐size inheritance, as well as other processes effecting size‐density relations in clastic sediment that go well beyond purely hydrodynamic control of intrasample heavy‐mineral variability.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Heavy minerals are commonly found within sediments and sedimentary rocks and can tell us from which source regions the sediment may have originated. However, it is important to understand that the type, size, and abundance of particular heavy minerals can change depending on factors such as environmental conditions. The size, shape, and density of the heavy minerals also limits when and where they will settle and/or stay. A lack of big or small grains of a particular heavy mineral in the source rocks dictates the size of the minerals deposited; this is known as grain‐size inheritance. Using both ancient and modern sediment, we are looking for traces of grain‐size inheritance. Surprisingly, in all samples investigated we noted effects of grain‐size inheritance, for different heavy‐mineral types. The modern beach sediments, as expected, show more impact of hydraulic processes, but inherited grain sizes are still apparent.     Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉The Ismenius Lacus region of Mars has a diverse geological history, and we present the first high‐resolution map of Deuteronilus Cavus (36.2°N; 14.0°E, ∼120 km diameter) in the fretted terrain south of the dichotomy boundary. Strong evidence suggests a volcanic origin of the regional plains, based on the ∼50 m thick volcanic bed underlying 180–300 m of sublimation residue associated with Amazonian plateau glaciation. Pervasive external volcanic flooding, internal erosional modification, and enlargement of a pre‐existing crater by up to 175%–200% resulted in the cavus' present shape. The phyllosilicates detected within Deuteronilus Cavus could be primary materials associated with the surficial aqueous activity, subsurface alteration products excavated by impacts, or a combination of both. We observe branching fluvial channels that are more recent than the traditional valley networks and may be related to fretted terrain resurfacing during the waning period of a high‐obliquity glaciation phase. This is consistent with our interpretation of the ∼600 m thick lobate and lineated deposits, which are remnants of receding glaciers. The glacial ice, protected by a 15–20 m insulating layer of debris cover, is of significant interest for future landing missions because of its potential to preserve biological and climatological signatures, to provide a critical test of Amazonian plateau glaciation, and to be used for in situ resource utilization. With our detailed geological mapping, we improved our understanding of the geological evolution and climatic conditions in the enigmatic fretted terrain near the dichotomy boundary.〈/p〉

In addition, we find strong evidence for recent glaciation (〈1 Ga) that left 180–300 m of sublimation residue on the plateau superimposed on a ∼50 m thick volcanic bed, suggesting a volcanic origin of the regional plains. During the waning period of a high‐glacial phase, the meltwater ponded on the surface of the cavus, altered surface rocks to produce phyllosilicates, formed channels (now observed as inverted sinuous ridges), and locally distributed branched fluvial channels that are more recent than the traditional valley networks. Glacial landforms still contain up to 600 m of remnant ice from the retreating glaciers at the end of the last glacial period. The relatively pure ice, protected by a 15–20 m insulating layer of debris cover, is critical for future landing missions because of its potential to preserve biological and climatological signatures and to be used for in situ resource utilization. Overall, this research enhances our understanding of the geological evolution and climatic history of Mars.〈/p〉

Aufgrund der festgestellten Unregelmäßigkeiten wurde eine neue Bergordnung erlassen. In 11 Paragrafen wurde eine ordentliche Rechnungslegung festgelegt, die Hammerherren zur pünktlichen Bezahlung des Eisensteins aufgefordert und eine strenge Kontrolle der Arbeitszeit angeordnet. Weiterhin erhielten Gewerken eine Steuererleichterung beim Stollnvortrieb.

Zusätzlich wurden ihr weitere 32 Paragrafen hinzugefügt, die in der Zeit zwischen 1510 und 1519 erlassen wurden. Mit dem Druck der neuen Bergordnung wollte man den Text der alten Bergordnung und die inzwischen erlassenen Paragrafen in einem Buch zusammenfassen. Obwohl auch in den neuen Paragrafen immer wieder Bezug auf Annaberg genommen wurde, war es aber schon in der Einleitung deutlich, dass diese Bergordnung für die gesamte Grafschaft Sachsen Gültigkeit hatte. Ausgenommen, waren auch hier die Bergwerke in Freiberg.

    Description: Abstract: In Germany, more than 70% of peat soils are used for agriculture. Due to drainage and utilization, these peat soils have considerable environmental impact. Drainage-based use also leads to continuous peat mineralization and subsidence and over time to a loss of productive land. In an expert meeting (16 - 18 June 2016), organized by the MoorDialog project (Greifswald Mire Centre) and the DGMT, representatives from agriculture, water management, research, and nature conservation discussed the ‘good professional practice’ of agricultural use of peat soils in Germany. The overarching goal should be to secure the availability of productive land. As the management of peat soils also affects the provision of other ecosystem services such as climate and water protection, a good professional practice must consider and balance all these benefits. The expert meeting explored criteria for water management and land management to define good professional practice in societal consensus. Finally, the necessary changes of legal and economic frameworks were discussed. This paper can be the basis for a broad discussion in the political arena.
    Description: Zusammenfassung: In Deutschland werden mehr als 70% der Moorböden landwirtschaftlich genutzt. Von der mit der Bewirtschaftung verbundenen Entwässerung gehen meist erhebliche Umweltbelastungen aus, die im Widerspruch zu internationalen Vorgaben und nationalen Vorschriften stehen. Die entwässerungsbasierte Nutzung von Moorböden führt zur kontinuierlichen Abnahme des Höhenniveaus und damit über die Zeit zu einem Verlust an Kulturland. Auf einem vom Projekt MoorDialog (Greifswald Moor Centrum) und der DGMT organisierten Fachgespräch vom 16. bis 18. Juni 2016 haben Vertreter aus Land- und Wasserwirtschaft, Wissenschaft sowie Natur- und Umweltschutz diskutiert, was eine gute fachliche Praxis der Nutzung von landwirtschaftlich genutzten Moorböden in Deutschland beinhalten sollte. Als übergeordnetes Ziel wurde definiert, heutiges Kulturland dauerhaft als nutzbares Land zu erhalten. Die Bewirtschaftung von Moorstandorten beeinflusst neben der Produktionsfunktion die Bereitstellung von anderen gesellschaftsrelevanten Ökosystemleistungen wie den Klima- und Gewässerschutz und die Lebensraumfunktion für einheimische Organismen. Im Rahmen einer guten fachlichen Praxis sollten diese Leistungen berücksichtigt und integral abgewogen werden. Als Ergebnis des Fachgesprächs wurden Kriterien für die Steuerung des Wasserhaushalts und das Flächenmanagement sondiert, anhand derer eine gute fachliche Praxis definiert und im gesellschaftlichen Konsens vereinbart werden kann. Abschließend werden die dafür notwendigen Änderungen der rechtlichen und ökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen diskutiert. Der vorliegende Entwurf soll als Grundlage für eine breite Diskussion im politischen Raum dienen.

Through the interaction with the solar wind, a magnetosphere is created. Compared to the magnetosphere of Earth, Mercury's magnetosphere is smaller and more dynamic. To understand the magnetospheric structures and processes we use in situ MESSENGER data to develop further a semi‐empiric model of the magnetospheric magnetic field, which can explain the observations and help to improve the mission planning for the BepiColombo mission en‐route to Mercury. We present this semi‐empiric KTH22‐model, a modular model to calculate the magnetic field inside the Hermean magnetosphere. Korth et al. (2015, 〈ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.1002/2015JA021022"〉https://doi.org/10.1002/2015JA021022〈/ext-link〉, 2017, 〈ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.1002/2017gl074699"〉https://doi.org/10.1002/2017gl074699〈/ext-link〉) published a model, which is the basis for the KTH22‐model. In this new version, the representation of the neutral sheet current magnetic field is more realistic, because it is now based on observations rather than ad‐hoc assumptions. Furthermore, a new module is added to depict the eastward ring shaped current magnetic field. These enhancements offer the possibility to improve the main field determination. In addition, analyzing the magnetic field residuals allows us to investigate the field‐aligned currents and their possible dependencies on external drivers. We see increasing currents under more disturbed conditions inside the magnetosphere, but no clear dependence on the z‐component of the interplanetary magnetic field nor on the magnetosheath plasma 〈italic〉β〈/italic〉.〈/p〉

Several methods for detecting cold pools in simulations exist, but are usually based on buoyancy fields and fall short of reliably identifying the active gust front. The current cold pool (CP) detection and tracking algorithm (CoolDeTA), aims to identify cold pools and follow them in time, thereby distinguishing their active gust fronts and the “offspring” rain cells generated nearby. To accomplish these tasks, CoolDeTA utilizes a combination of thermodynamic and dynamical variables and examines the spatial and temporal relationships between cold pools and rain events. We demonstrate that CoolDeTA can reconstruct CP family trees. Using CoolDeTA we can contrast radiative convective equilibrium (RCE) and diurnal cycle CP dynamics, as well as cases with vertical wind shear and without. We show that the results obtained are consistent with a conceptual model where CP triggering of children rain cells follows a simple birth rate, proportional to a CP's gust front length. The proportionality factor depends on the ambient atmospheric stability and is lower for RCE, in line with marginal stability as traditionally ascribed to the moist adiabat. In the diurnal case, where ambient stability is lower, the birth rate thus becomes substantially higher, in line with periodic insolation forcing—resulting in essentially run‐away mesoscale excitations generated by a single parent rain cell and its CP.〈/p〉

Here, we propose to use the shadow variations of the ice blocks at the foot of the steep scarps of the North Polar Layered Deposits (NPLD) to infer the vertical evolution of the seasonal deposits. We conduct an experiment at a steep scarp centered at (85.0°N, 151.5°E). We assume that no snowfall remains on top of the selected ice blocks, the frost ice layer is homogeneous around the ice blocks and their surroundings, and no significant moating is present. We show that the average thickness of the seasonal deposits due to snowfalls in Mars Year 31 is 0.97 ± 0.13 m at Ls = 350.7° in late winter. The large depth measured makes us wonder if snowfalls are more frequent and violent than previously thought. Meanwhile, we show that the average frost thickness in Mars Year 31 reaches 0.64 ± 0.18 m at Ls = 350.7° in late winter. Combined, the total thickness of the seasonal cover in Mars Year 31 reaches 1.63 ± 0.22 m at Ls = 350.7° in late winter, continuously decreases to 0.45 ± 0.06 m at Ls = 42.8° in middle spring and 0.06 ± 0.05 m at Ls = 69.6° in late spring. These estimates are up to 0.8 m lower than the existing Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter results during the spring. Meanwhile, we observe that snow in the very early spring of Mars Year 36 can be 0.36 ± 0.13 m thicker than that in Mars Year 31. This study demonstrates the dynamics of the Martian climate and emphasizes the importance of its long‐term monitoring.〈/p〉

An explicit focus on efficient data management and batch processing enables full control of large time‐resolved synchrotron and laboratory data sets for a detailed analysis of kinetic GIWAXS/GISAXS studies of thin films. It processes data acquired with arbitrarily rotated detectors and performs vertical, horizontal, azimuthal and radial cuts in reciprocal space. It further allows crystallographic indexing and GIWAXS pattern simulation, and provides various plotting and export functionalities. Customized scripting offers a one‐step solution to reduce, process, analyze and export findings of large 〈italic〉in situ〈/italic〉 and 〈italic〉operando〈/italic〉 data sets.〈/p〉

The relative synchronicity across Greenland, the North Atlantic and Europe implies a tight and fast coupling between those regions, most probably effectuated by an atmospheric transmission mechanism. In this study, we investigated the atmospheric changes during Greenland interstadial (GI) and stadial (GS) phases based on regional climate model simulations using two specific periods, GI‐10 and GS‐9 both around 40 ka, as boundary conditions. Our simulations accurately capture the changes in temperature and precipitation as reconstructed by the available proxy data. Moreover, the simulations depict an intensified and southward shifted eddy‐driven jet during the stadial period. Ultimately, this affects the near‐surface circulation toward more southwesterly and cyclonic flow in western Europe during the stadial period, explaining much of the seasonal climate variability recorded by the proxy data, including oxygen isotopes, at the considered proxy sites.〈/p〉

Satellite observations can provide spatio‐temporal information on dust emission and transport pathways. However, satellite observations of dust plumes are frequently obscured by clouds. We use a method based on established, machine‐learning‐based image in‐painting techniques to restore the spatial extent of dust plumes for the first time. We train an artificial neural net (ANN) on modern reanalysis data paired with satellite‐derived cloud masks. The trained ANN is applied to cloud‐masked, gray‐scaled images, which were derived from false color images indicating elevated dust plumes in bright magenta. The images were obtained from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager instrument onboard the Meteosat Second Generation satellite. We find up to 15% of summertime observations in West Africa and 10% of summertime observations in Nubia by satellite images miss dust plumes due to cloud cover. We use the new dust‐plume data to demonstrate a novel approach for validating spatial patterns of the operational forecasts provided by the World Meteorological Organization Dust Regional Center in Barcelona. The comparison elucidates often similar dust plume patterns in the forecasts and the satellite‐based reconstruction, but once trained, the reconstruction is computationally inexpensive. Our proposed reconstruction provides a new opportunity for validating dust aerosol transport in numerical weather models and Earth system models. It can be adapted to other aerosol species and trace gases.〈/p〉

The 2D cylindrical and the more recent 2D spherical annulus geometries are predominantly used in this context, but the extent to how well they reproduce the 3D spherical shell results in comparison to each other and in which setup has not yet been extensively investigated. Here we performed a thorough and systematic study in order to assess which 2D geometry reproduces best the 3D spherical shell. In a first set of models, we investigated the effects of the geometry on thermal convection in steady‐state setups while varying a broad range of parameters. Additional thermal evolution models of three terrestrial bodies, namely Mercury, the Moon, and Mars, which have different interior structures, were used to compare the 2D and 3D geometries. Our investigations show that the 2D spherical annulus geometry provides results closer to models in a 3D spherical shell compared to the 2D cylindrical geometry. Our study indicates where acceptable differences can be expected when using a 2D instead of a 3D geometry and where to be cautious when interpreting the results.〈/p〉

In situ trace‐element, clinopyroxene 〈sup〉87〈/sup〉Sr/〈sup〉86〈/sup〉Sr and garnet Fe〈sup〉3+〈/sup〉/ΣFe of kimberlite‐borne eclogite xenoliths from the deep (∼50 km) crust‐mantle transition below the ca. 1.2–1.0 Ga Namaqua‐Natal Fold Belt (southwestern Kaapvaal craton margin) were determined to elucidate their origin and evolution, and to constrain the oxygen fugacity of this pivotal but largely inaccessible environment. Based on a garnet source signature (NMORB‐normalized Er/Lu > 1) in pristine “gabbroic” eclogites with pronounced positive Eu, Sr, and Pb anomalies, the suite is interpreted as originating as plagioclase‐rich cumulates in oceanic crust from melts generated beneath mature oceanic lithosphere, subsequently subducted during the Namaqua‐Natal orogeny. Enriched eclogites have higher measured 〈sup〉87〈/sup〉Sr/〈sup〉86〈/sup〉Sr in clinopyroxene (up to 0.7054) than gabbroic ones (up to 0.7036), and show increasing bulk‐rock Li, Be and Pb abundances with increasing δ〈sup〉18〈/sup〉O in clinopyroxene, and muted Eu‐Sr‐Pb anomalies. These systematics suggest interaction with a siliceous fluid sourced from seawater‐altered oceanic sediment in a subduction mélange setting. Garnet Fe〈sup〉3+〈/sup〉/ΣFe in deep crustal eclogites is extremely low (0.01–0.04, ±0.01 1〈italic〉σ〈/italic〉), as inherited from the plagioclase‐rich cumulate protolith, and owing to preferred partitioning into clinopyroxene at low temperatures (∼815–1000°C). Average maximum oxygen fugacities (∆logƒO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉(FMQ) = −3.1 ± 1.0 to −0.5 ± 0.7 relative to the Fayalite‐Magnetite‐Quartz buffer) are higher than in deeper‐seated on‐craton eclogite xenoliths, but mostly below sulfate stability, limiting the role of S〈sup〉6+〈/sup〉 species in oxidizing the mantle wedge.〈/p〉

Metamorphic reactions during subduction cause fluid or melt loss from seawater‐altered oceanic crust and sediment, which enriches the overlying mantle, and possibly oxidizes it. Using rare deep‐seated magmas (kimberlites) as probes of a ca. 1.2 billion year old southern African subduction zone, we investigated eclogite fragments that originated as subducted oceanic crust and were much later plucked from the wallrocks by the ascending magma. These eclogites show elemental and isotopic signatures of interaction with subducted sediments, pointing to mingling processes similar to those observed in modern subduction zones. We also estimated their oxygen fugacity, a measure of the chemical potential of oxygen. We find that sulfur, which has been implicated in mantle oxidation, would have only been stable in these rocks in its reduced form, making even seawater‐altered eclogites sinks rather than sources of oxygen, with implications for the transfer of sulfur‐loving metals across the mantle‐to‐crust‐boundary.〈/p〉

    Description: Ob Energiewende, die Gewinnung geothermischer Energie aus dem Boden, der Bau von unterirdischen Stromtrassen oder die Modellierung des Energiehaushalts der Erdoberfläche – die Kenntnisse der physikalisch-thermischen Eigenschaften des oberflächennahen Untergrundes sind von zentraler Bedeutung für zahlreiche Fragestellen der angewandten Bodenkunde. Böden als 3-Phasengemische aus Wasser, Luft und Festsubstanz können erhebliche Unterschiede und Differenzierungen bezüglich der thermischen Eigenschaften aufweisen. Neben dem Wasser- und Lufthaushalt sind Lagerungsdichte, Textur sowie die mineralogische Zusammensetzung entscheidende Einflussfaktoren. Auf Basis dieser Grundlagen wurden von verschiedenen Autoren Modellansätze entwickelt, um thermische Parameter bei unterschiedlichen Feuchtezuständen abzuleiten. Die meisten dieser Ansätze beruhen auf der Auswertung von repräsentativen Bodenproben, die ein möglichst breites Texturspektrum abbilden sollen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung verfolgt einen alternativen Ansatz. Durch Messungen im Routinebetrieb eines bodenphysikalischen Labors wurde ein umfangreicher Datensatz aufgebaut, der Auswertungen nach verschiedenen laboranalytischen sowie boden- und substratsystematischen Aspekten ermöglicht. Auf dieser breiten Datenbasis sollen die thermischen Eigenschaften von Böden bei definierten Randbedingungen noch genauer gefasst werden. Darüber hinaus sollen Grundlagen erarbeitet werden, die es ermöglichen, thermische Kennwerte über die Kenntnis einfacher Feldparameter möglichst präzise abzuschätzen.

Hintergrund waren neben der wachsenden Korruption auch Betrug, Misswirtschaft und Machtmissbrauch der Bergbeamten, dem durch den rasant wachsenden Bergbau Tür und Tor geöffnet war. Mutmaßlich inspiriert durch die Bauernkriege kam es am 20. Mai 1525 zu einem Aufstand der Bergleuten in Joachimsthal. Nach der raschen Beilegung der Auseinandersetzung wurde zu der weiterhin gültigen Bergordnung vom 2. August 1518 eine Ergänzung mit 35 Artikeln erlassen.

    Description: In verschiedenen Hanglagen der Ortsgemeinde Essenheim in Rheinhessen (Rheinland-Pfalz) ist der Untergrund rutschgefährdet oder es sind fossile Rutschungen vorhanden. In einer dieser Hanglagen wurde die Erweiterung des Baugebietes „Domherrngärten" geplant. In der Folge dessen war zu klären, unter welchen Randbedingungen die Bebauung realisiert werden kann. Hierzu wurden in mehreren Kampagnen der geologische Untergrund mit Kernbohrungen untersucht und Inklinometermessstellen zur Beobachtung von Hangbewegungen eingerichtet. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse wurden im Rahmen einer Bachelorarbeit zur Durchführung von Standsicherheitsberechnungen genutzt. Auf der Basis aller Untersuchungsergebnisse werden Vorsorgemaßnahmen für die Bebauung in einem rutschgefährdetem Hang aufgezeigt.
    Description: Abstract: Various slopes in the village Essenheim in Rhinehessen/ Rhineland-Pala- tinate are prone to landslides. The planed extension of the building area „Domherrngärten II" is part of such an area. In succession it had to be discussed under which circumstances construction is possible. To analyze the geological features core drillings with rock sampling were executed as well as inclinometers (measurements to detect motion of the slope). The taken data was used in a Bachelor thesis to evaluate the slope stability. On the base of all results references for building on instable slopes are given.

They indicate that the zonal winds, which rule the dynamics of Jupiter's cloud deck, must slow down significantly beyond a depth of about 3,000 km. Since the underlying inversion is highly non‐unique additional constraints on the flow properties at depth are required. These could potentially be provided by the magnetic field and its Secular Variation (SV) over time. However, the role of these zonal winds in Jupiter's magnetic field dynamics is little understood. Here we use numerical simulations to explore the impact of the zonal winds on the dynamo field produced at depth. We find that the main effect is an attenuation of the non‐axisymmetric field, which can be quantified by a modified magnetic Reynolds number Rm that combines flow amplitude and electrical conductivity profile. Values below Rm = 3 are required to retain a pronounced non‐axisymmetric feature like the Great Blue Spot (GBS), which seems characteristic for Jupiter's magnetic field. This allows for winds reaching as deep as 3,400 km. A SV pattern similar to the observation can only be found in some of our models. Its amplitude reflects the degree of cancellation between advection and diffusion rather than the zonal wind velocity at any depth. It is therefore not straightforward to make inferences on the deep structure of cloud‐level winds based on Jupiter's SV.〈/p〉

Juno also observed an east‐ward drift of the GBS. While some of our simulations also show an east‐ward drift it is typically much too slow.〈/p〉

We used remote sensing measurements of thermal emission and a thermophysical model to determine the microphysical properties of the lunar regolith. We expand upon previous investigations by developing a microphysical thermal model, which more directly simulates regolith properties, such as grain size and volume filling factor. The modeled temperatures are matched with surface temperatures measured by the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment on board the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The maria and highlands are investigated separately and characterized in the model by a difference in albedo and grain density. We find similar regolith temperatures for both terrains, which can be well described by similar volume filling factor profiles and mean grain sizes obtained from returned Apollo samples. We also investigate a significantly lower thermal conductivity for highlands, which formally also gives a very good solution, but in a parameter range that is well outside the Apollo data. We then study the latitudinal dependence of regolith properties up to ±80° latitude. When assuming constant regolith properties, we find that a variation of the solar incidence‐dependent albedo can reduce the initially observed latitudinal gradient between model and Diviner measurements significantly. A better match between measurements and model can be achieved by a variation in intrinsic regolith properties with a decrease in bulk density with increasing latitude. We find that a variation in grain size alone cannot explain the Diviner measurements at higher latitudes.〈/p〉

To test their emplacement conditions, we investigated the magnetic properties and microstructures of 26 polymict breccia clasts and a stratigraphic profile from the clasts into the suevite at the Aumühle quarry. Remanent magnetization directions of the Bunte Breccia clasts fall into two groups: those whose directions mostly lie parallel to the reversed field during impact carried mostly by magnetite, and those whose directions vary widely among each clast carried by titanohematite. Basement clasts containing titanohematite acquired a chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) during the ejection process and then rotated during turbulent deposition. Clasts of sedimentary rocks grew magnetite after turbulent deposition, with CRM directions lying parallel to the paleofield. Suevite holds a thermal remanent magnetization carried by magnetite, except for ∼12 cm from the contact with the Bunte Breccia, where hematite concentrations increase due to hydrothermal alteration. These observations lead us to propose a three‐stage model of (a) turbulent deposition of the melt‐free breccia with clast rotation 〈580°C, (b) deposition of the overlying suevite, which acted as a semi‐permeable barrier that confined hot (〈300°C) oxidizing fluids to the permeable breccia zone, and (c) prolonged hydrothermal activity producing further alteration which ended before the next geomagnetic reversal. Basement outcrops have significantly different magnetic properties than the Bunte Breccia basement clasts with similar lithology. Two basement blocks situated near the inner ring may have been thermally overprinted up to 550°C.〈/p〉

However, its application often suffers from artifacts related to the receiver array geometry. We developed a teleseismic back‐projection technique that can accommodate data from multiple arrays. Combined processing of P and pP waveforms may further improve the resolution. The method is suitable for defining arrays ad‐hoc to achieve a good azimuthal distribution for most earthquakes. We present a catalog of short‐period rupture histories (0.5–2.0 Hz) for all earthquakes from 2010 to 2022 with 〈italic〉M〈/italic〉〈sub〉〈italic〉W〈/italic〉〈/sub〉 ≥ 7.5 and depth less than 200 km (56 events). The method provides automatic estimates of rupture length, directivity, speed, and aspect ratio, a proxy for rupture complexity. We obtained short‐period rupture length scaling relations that are in good agreement with previously published relations based on estimates of total slip. Rupture speeds were consistently in the sub‐Rayleigh regime for thrust and normal earthquakes, whereas a tenth of strike‐slip events propagated at supershear speeds. Many rupture histories exhibited complex behaviors, for example, rupture on conjugate faults, bilateral propagation, and dynamic triggering by a P wave. For megathrust earthquakes, ruptures encircling asperities were frequently observed, with downdip, updip, and balanced patterns. Although there is a preference for short‐period emissions to emanate from central and downdip parts of the megathrust, emissions updip of the main asperity are more frequent than suggested by earlier results.〈/p〉

    Description: This paper describes the motivation for the creation of the Vulnerability, Impacts, Adaptation and Climate Services (VIACS) Advisory Board for the Sixth Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), its initial activities, and its plans to serve as a bridge between climate change applications experts and climate modelers. The climate change application community comprises researchers and other specialists who use climate information (alongside socioeconomic and other environmental information) to analyze vulnerability, impacts, and adaptation of natural systems and society in relation to past, ongoing, and projected future climate change. Much of this activity is directed toward the co-development of information needed by decision-makers for managing projected risks. CMIP6 provides a unique opportunity to facilitate a two-way dialog between climate modelers and VIACS experts who are looking to apply CMIP6 results for a wide array of research and climate services objectives. The VIACS Advisory Board convenes leaders of major impact sectors, international programs, and climate services to solicit community feedback that increases the applications relevance of the CMIP6-Endorsed Model Intercomparison Projects (MIPs). As an illustration of its potential, the VIACS community provided CMIP6 leadership with a list of prioritized climate model variables and MIP experiments of the greatest interest to the climate model applications community, indicating the applicability and societal relevance of climate model simulation outputs. The VIACS Advisory Board also recommended an impacts version of Obs4MIPs and indicated user needs for the gridding and processing of model output.

    Description: Projections of precipitation extremes over land are crucial for socioeconomic risk assessments, yet model discrepancies limit their application. Here we use a pattern-filtering technique to identify low-frequency changes in individual members of a multimodel ensemble to assess discrepancies across models in the projected pattern and magnitude of change. Specifically, we apply low-frequency component analysis (LFCA) to the intensity and frequency of daily precipitation extremes over land in 21 CMIP-6 models. LFCA brings modest but statistically significant improvements in the agreement between models in the spatial pattern of projected change, particularly in scenarios with weak greenhouse forcing. Moreover, we show that LFCA facilitates a robust identification of the rates at which increasing precipitation extremes scale with global temperature change within individual ensemble members. While these rates approximately match expectations from the Clausius-Clapeyron relation on average across models, individual models exhibit considerable and significant differences. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that these differences contribute to uncertainty in the magnitude of projected change at least as much as differences in the climate sensitivity. Last, we compare these scaling rates with those identified from observational products, demonstrating that virtually all climate models significantly underestimate the rates at which increases in precipitation extremes have scaled with global temperatures historically. Constraining projections with observations therefore amplifies the projected intensification of precipitation extremes as well as reducing the relative error of their distribution.

    Description: Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) moves atmospheric carbon to geological or land-based sinks. In a first-best setting, the optimal use of CDR is achieved by a removal subsidy that equals the optimal carbon tax and marginal damages. We derive second-best policy rules for CDR subsidies and carbon taxes when no global carbon price exists but a national government implements a unilateral climate policy. We find that the optimal carbon tax differs from an optimal CDR subsidy because of carbon leakage and a balance of resource trade effect. First, the optimal removal subsidy tends to be larger than the carbon tax because of lower supply-side leakage on fossil resource markets. Second, net carbon exporters exacerbate this wedge to increase producer surplus of their carbon resource producers, implying even larger removal subsidies. Third, net carbon importers may set their removal subsidy even below their carbon tax when marginal environmental damages are small, to appropriate producer surplus from carbon exporters.

    Description: This study investigates the adjustment of large-scale localized buoyancy anomalies in mid-latitude regions and the nonlinear evolution of associated condensation patterns in both adiabatic and moist-convective environments. This investigation is carried out utilizing the two-layer idealized moist-convective thermal rotating shallow water (mcTRSW) model. Our investigation reveals that the presence of a circular positive potential temperature anomaly in the lower layer initiates an anticyclonic high-pressure rotation, accompanied by a negative buoyancy anomaly in the upper layer, resulting in an anisotropic northeast–southwest tilted circulation of heat flux. The evolution of eddy heat fluxes, such as poleward heat flux, energy, and meridional elongation of the buoyancy field, heavily depends on the perturbation's strength, size, and vertical structure. The heatwave initiates atmospheric instability, leading to precipitation systems such as rain bands and asymmetric latent heat release due to moist convection in a diabatic environment. This creates a comma cloud pattern in the upper troposphere and a comma-shaped buoyancy anomaly in the lower layer, accompanied by the emission of inertia gravity waves. The southern and eastern sectors of the buoyancy anomaly show an upward flux, generating a stronger cross-equatorial flow and inertia-gravity waves in a southward and eastward direction. Furthermore, the simulations reveal a similar asymmetric pattern of total condensed liquid water content distribution, accompanied by the intensification of moist convection as rain bands. This intensification is more pronounced in barotropic structures than in baroclinic configurations with stagnant upper layers. This study highlights the importance of considering moist convection and its effects on atmospheric and oceanic flows in mid-latitude regions, as well as the role of buoyancy anomalies in generating heatwaves and precipitation patterns.

    Description: Here, we present BASD-CMIP6-PE, a high-resolution (1d, 10 km) climate dataset for Peru and Ecuador based on the bias-adjusted and statistically downscaled CMIP6 climate projections of 10 GCMs. This dataset includes both historical simulations (1850–2014) and future projections (2015–2100) for precipitation and minimum, mean, and maximum temperature under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). The BASD-CMIP6-PE climate data were generated using the trend-preserving Bias Adjustment and Statistical Downscaling (BASD) method. The BASD performance was evaluated using observational data and through hydrological modeling across Peruvian and Ecuadorian river basins in the historical period. Results demonstrated that BASD significantly reduced biases between CMIP6-GCM simulations and observational data, enhancing long-term statistical representations, including mean and extreme values, and seasonal patterns. Furthermore, the hydrological evaluation highlighted the appropriateness of adjusted GCM simulations for simulating streamflow, including mean, low, and high flows. These findings underscore the reliability of BASD-CMIP6-PE in assessing regional climate change impacts on agriculture, water resources, and hydrological extremes.

    Description: Introduction: Behavioural interventions could improve caregivers’ food hygiene practices in low-resource settings. So far, evidence is limited to small-scale and short-term studies, and few have evaluated the long-term maintenance of promoted behaviours. We evaluated the effect of a relatively large-scale behaviour change intervention on medium and long-term maintenance of household food hygiene practices in Bangladesh. - Methods: We analyse a secondary outcome of the Food and Agricultural Approaches to Reducing Malnutrition (FAARM) cluster-randomised trial and its sub-study Food Hygiene to reduce Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (FHEED), conducted in Habiganj district, Sylhet division, Bangladesh. The FAARM trial used a 1:1 parallel arm design and included 2705 women in 96 settlements: 48 intervention and 48 control. Women in the intervention settlements received training in homestead gardening, poultry rearing and nutrition over three years (2015–2018), complemented by an eight-month (mid-2017 to early-2018) behaviour change component on food hygiene using motivational drivers. Nested within the FAARM trial, the FHEED sub-study evaluated several outcomes along the hygiene pathway. For this article, we evaluated household food hygiene behaviours by analysing structured observation data collected in two cross-sectional surveys, four and 16 months after the food hygiene promotion ended, from two independent subsamples of FAARM women with children aged 6–18 months. We assessed intervention effects on food hygiene practices using mixed-effects logistic regression, accounting for clustering. In exploratory analyses, we further assessed behaviour patterns – how often critical food hygiene behaviours were performed individually, in combination and consistently across events. - Results: Based on the analysis of 524 complementary feeding and 800 food preparation events in households from 571 participant women, we found that intervention households practised better food hygiene than controls four months post-intervention, with somewhat smaller differences after 16 months. Overall, the intervention positively affected food hygiene, particularly around child feeding: using soap for handwashing (odds ratio 5·8, 95% CI 2·2–15·2), cleaning feeding utensils (3·8, 1·9–7·7), and cooking fresh/reheating food (1·8, 1·1–2·8). However, the simultaneous practice of several behaviours was rare, occurring in only 10% of feeding events (intervention: 15%; control: 4%), and the practice of safe food hygiene behaviours was inconsistent between events. - Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a motivational behaviour change intervention encouraged caregivers to maintain certain safe food hygiene practices in a rural setting. However, substantial physical changes in the household environment are likely needed to make these behaviours habitual.

    Description: Increasing renewable sources in the energy mix is essential to mitigate climate change, not least in countries where the energy demand is likely to rise over the coming decades to reduce or even skip durations of time where fossils dominate. For Africa, solar photovoltaic (PV) and inland wind energy, combined with hydropower, provide significant and untapped potentials, whereas trends and robustness measures need further investigation. This study aims to gain insight into distributed trends in solar PV and wind energy potentials over Africa. This study employs relevant metrics, including relative change, model agreement, robustness, bias, and absolute levels for every available model combination and two climate scenarios, with energy planning purposes in mind. The study finds that regional climate models were the primary control of spatio-temporal patterns over their driving global climate model. Solar PV potentials show more coherence between models, a lower bias and general high potentials in most African regions than wind potentials. Favourable locations for inland wind energy include mainly the regions of greater Sahara and the Horn region. For wind and solar potentials combined, scattered locations within Sahara stand out as the most favourable across scenarios and periods. The analysis of minimum energy potentials shows stable conditions despite low potentials in certain regions. The results demonstrate a potential for solar and wind power in most of the African regions and highlight why solar and wind power or synergies of energy mix should be considered for local energy planning and storage solutions.

    Description: This paper describes the rationale and the protocol of the first component of the third simulation round of the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP3a, http://www.isimip.org, last access: 2 November 2023) and the associated set of climate-related and direct human forcing data (CRF and DHF, respectively). The observation-based climate-related forcings for the first time include high-resolution observational climate forcings derived by orographic downscaling, monthly to hourly coastal water levels, and wind fields associated with historical tropical cyclones. The DHFs include land use patterns, population densities, information about water and agricultural management, and fishing intensities. The ISIMIP3a impact model simulations driven by these observation-based climate-related and direct human forcings are designed to test to what degree the impact models can explain observed changes in natural and human systems. In a second set of ISIMIP3a experiments the participating impact models are forced by the same DHFs but a counterfactual set of atmospheric forcings and coastal water levels where observed trends have been removed. These experiments are designed to allow for the attribution of observed changes in natural, human, and managed systems to climate change, rising CH4 and CO2 concentrations, and sea level rise according to the definition of the Working Group II contribution to the IPCC AR6.

Satellite remote sensing can play a unique role in identifying and anticipating tipping phenomena across scales. Where satellite records are too short for temporal early warning of tipping points, complementary spatial indicators can leverage the exceptional spatial-temporal coverage of remotely sensed data to detect changing resilience of vulnerable systems.     Description: Passenger transport has significant externalities, including carbon emissions and air pollution. Public health research has identified additional social gains from active travel, due to the health benefits of physical exercise. Per mile, these benefits greatly exceed the external costs from car use. We introduce active travel into an optimal fuel taxation model and characterize analytically the second-best optimal fuel tax. We find that accounting for active travel benefits increases the optimal fuel tax by 44% in the USA and 38% in the UK. Fuel taxes should be implemented jointly with other policies aimed at increasing the uptake of active travel.

    Description: Aerosol effects on cloud properties are notoriously difficult to disentangle from variations driven by meteorological factors. Here, a machine learning model is trained on reanalysis data and satellite retrievals to predict cloud microphysical properties, as a way to illustrate the relative importance of meteorology and aerosol, respectively, on cloud properties. It is found that cloud droplet effective radius can be predicted with some skill from only meteorological information, including estimated air mass origin and cloud top height. For ten geographical regions the mean coefficient of determination is 0.3813 and normalised root-mean square error 25%. The machine learning model thereby performs better than a reference linear regression model, and a model predicting the climatological mean. A gradient boosting regression performs on par with a neural network regression model. Adding aerosol information as input to the model improves its skill somewhat, but the difference is small and the direction of the influence of changing aerosol burden on cloud droplet effective radius is not consistent across regions, and thereby also not always consistent with what is expected from cloud brightening.

    Description: Madagascar has a high socio-economic dependency on agriculture, a sector which is strongly influenced by weather-related factors and increasingly challenged by the impacts of climate change. Currently, only limited information on climate risks and its impacts is available for the country’s agricultural sector. This study aims to provide a comprehensive climate risk analysis including a thorough evaluation of two potential adaptation strategies that can guide local decision-makers on adaptation planning and implementation in Madagascar. The impact assessment consists of several steps, including climate projections based on three emissions scenarios (SSP1-RCP2.6, SSP3- RCP7.0 and SSP5-RCP8.5 scenario), modelling and comparison of future suitability and yield of three widely used crops (coffee, vanilla, pepper) and an assessment of yield changes in peanut production under future climate conditions. Further, the study outlines gendered challenges and support requirements in national adaptation planning. The simulation results show that Robusta coffee is less sensitive to heat compared to Arabica coffee. The suitable area for Robusta coffee remains almost stable under changing climate conditions, while the suitability of Arabica coffee is projected decrease by 7 % on a national level. Simulation results indicate a slight increase in suitability for vanilla production, particularly in the main growing region Sava, but also in Atsimo Atsinanana, thus safeguarding an important source of income for local farmers and guaranteeing the sustainability of Madagascar´s most valuable export product. Furthermore, climate change is projected to have a rather low impact on the agro-climatic suitability of pepper production. When averaged across Madagascar, the decrease in suitability is less than 1 %, however, there are some noteworthy differences across regions and scenarios. The results for the process-based peanut modelling show that rising temperature and reduced rainfall amounts are likely to decrease peanut yields across Madagascar. However, elevated atmospheric CO2 is projected to offset these negative impacts. The study furthermore evaluated the efficiency of two adaptation strategies, namely the use of locally adapted crop varieties and flexible planting dates. The simulation results suggest that the traditional cultivar Kanety is more suited in future climate change scenarios since yields for Kanety are generally higher than those of the improved variety Fleur 11. Interestingly, opting for flexible planting dates as opposed to a fixed planting date does not result in enhanced yields. This result underlines the importance of regional crop calendars to determine optimal sowing dates. The findings of this study can help to inform national and local adaptation and agricultural development planning and investments in order to strengthen the resilience of the agricultural sector and especially of smallholder farmers against a changing climate in Madagascar.

To study the influence of the continuously changing psychology of individuals on the behavior of populations, in this article, we consider the game transitions of individuals in evolutionary processes to capture the changing psychology of individuals in reality, where the game that individuals will play shifts as time progresses and is related to the transition rates between different games. Besides, the individual’s reputation is taken into account and utilized to choose a suitable neighbor for the strategy updating of the individual. Within this model, we investigate the statistical number of individuals staying in different game states and the expected number fits well with our theoretical results. Furthermore, we explore the impact of transition rates between different game states, payoff parameters, the reputation mechanism, and different time scales of strategy updates on cooperative behavior, and our findings demonstrate that both the transition rates and reputation mechanism have a remarkable influence on the evolution of cooperation. Additionally, we examine the relationship between network size and cooperation frequency, providing valuable insights into the robustness of the model.

    Description: We demonstrate an indirect, rather than direct, role of quasi-resonant amplification of planetary waves in a summer weather extreme. We find that there was an interplay between a persistent, amplified large-scale atmospheric circulation state and soil moisture feedbacks as a precursor for the June 2021 Pacific Northwest “Heat Dome” event. An extended resonant planetary wave configuration prior to the event created an antecedent soil moisture deficit that amplified lower atmospheric warming through strong nonlinear soil moisture feedbacks, favoring this unprecedented heat event.

    Description: In recent years, several global events have severely disrupted economies and social structures, undermining confidence in the resilience of modern societies. Examples include the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought unprecedented health challenges and economic disruptions, and the emergence of geopolitical tensions and conflicts that have further strained international relations and economic stability. While empirical evidence on the dynamics and drivers of past societal collapse is mounting, a process-based understanding of these dynamics is still in its infancy. Here, we aim to identify and illustrate the underlying drivers of such societal instability or even collapse. The inspiration for this work is Joseph Tainter’s theory of the “collapse of complex societies”, which postulates that the complexity of societies increases as they solve problems, leading to diminishing returns on complexity investments and ultimately to collapse. In this work, we abstract this theory into a low-dimensional and stylized model of two classes of networked agents, hereafter referred to as “laborers” and “administrators”. We numerically model the dynamics of societal complexity, measured as the fraction of “administrators”, which was assumed to affect the productivity of connected energy-producing “laborers”. We show that collapse becomes increasingly likely as the complexity of the model society continuously increases in response to external stresses that emulate Tainter’s abstract notion of problems that societies must solve. We also provide an analytical approximation of the system’s dominant dynamics, which matches well with the numerical experiments, and use it to study the influence on network link density, social mobility and productivity. Our work advances the understanding of social-ecological collapse and illustrates its potentially direct link to an ever-increasing societal complexity in response to external shocks or stresses via a self-reinforcing feedback.

    Description: Understanding wildfire dynamics in space and over time is critical for wildfire control and management. In this study, fire data from European Space Agency (ESA) MODIS fire product (ESA/CCI/FireCCI/5_1) with ≥ 70% confidence level was used to characterise spatial and temporal variation in fire frequency in Zimbabwe between 2001 and 2020. Results showed that burned area increased by 16% from 3,689 km2 in 2001 to 6,130 km2 in 2011 and decreased in subsequent years reaching its lowest in 2020 (1,161km2). Over, the 20-year period, an average of 40,086.56 km2 of land was burned annually across the country. In addition, results of the regression analysis based on Generalised Linear Model illustrated that soil moisture, wind speed and temperature significantly explained variation in burned area. Moreover, the four-year lagged annual rainfall was positively related with burned area suggesting that some parts in the country (southern and western) are characterised by limited herbaceous production thereby increasing the time required for the accumulation of sufficient fuel load. The study identified major fire hotspots in Zimbabwe through the integration of remotely sensed fire data within a spatially analytical framework. This can provide useful insights into fire evolution which can be used to guide wildfire control and management in fire prone ecosystems. Moreover, resource allocation for fire management and mitigation can be optimised through targeting areas most affected by wildfires especially during the dry season where wildfire activity is at its peak.

    Description: Shifting cultivation will face increasing pressure from erosion-related land degradation caused by rising cultivation intensities and climate change. However, empirical knowledge about future trends of soil erosion and thus land degradation in shifting cultivation systems is limited. We use the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model to first explore the combined effects of climate change and agricultural intensification on soil erosion of uphill shifting cultivation systems, using six surveyed soil profiles. We assess interactions between climate change, the length of the fallow period, and slope inclinations for a near (2021–2050) and far (2071–2100) future period, considering three climate scenarios, five climate models, fallow periods between one and 20 years, and slopes between five and 70% steepness. Our results show a significant nonlinear relationship between global warming and erosion. Until the end of the century, erosion is estimated to increase by a factor of 1.2, 2.2, and 3.1 under the SSP126, SSP370, and SSP585 scenarios, respectively, compared with the historical baseline (1985–2014). Combined effects from climate change, fallow length, and slope inclination indicate that steep slopes require longer fallow periods, with an increase of slope from 5% to 10% multiplying the required fallow length by a mean factor of 2.5, and that fallow periods will need to be extended under higher global warming if erosion rates are to remain at current levels. These findings are novel as they link climate change effects on shifting cultivation systems to different slopes and fallow regimes, making an important contribution to understanding future erosion dynamics of traditional smallholder production systems in mountainous terrain, with relevant implications for policies on agricultural intensification.

    Description: In recent decades, numerous paleoclimate records and results of model simulations provided strong support to the astronomical theory of Quaternary glacial cycles formulated in its modern form by Milutin Milankovitch. At the same time, new findings revealed that the classical Milankovitch theory is unable to explain a number of important facts, such as the change of the dominant periodicity of glacial cycles from 41 kyr to 100 kyr about one million years ago. This transition was also accompanied by an increase in the amplitude and asymmetry of the glacial cycles. Here, based on the results of a hierarchy of models and data analysis, a framework of the extended (generalized) version of the Milankovitch theory is presented. To illustrate the main elements of this theory, a simple conceptual model of glacial cycles was developed using the results of an Earth system model CLIMBER-2. This conceptual model explicitly assumes the multistability of the climate-cryosphere system and the instability of the “supercritical” ice sheets. Using this model, it is shown that Quaternary glacial cycles can be successfully reproduced as the strongly-nonlinear response of the Earth system to the orbital forcing, where 100 kyr cyclicity originates from the phase-locking of the precession and obliquity-forced glacial cycles to the corresponding eccentricity cycle. The eccentricity influences glacial cycles solely through its amplitude modulation of the precession component of orbital forcing, while the long time scale of the late Quaternary glacial cycles is determined by the time required for ice sheets to reach their critical size. The postulates used to construct this conceptual model were justified using analysis of relevant physical and biogeochemical processes and feedbacks. In particular, the role of climate-ice sheet-carbon cycle feedback in shaping and globalization of glacial cycles is discussed. The reasons for the instability of the large northern ice sheets and the mechanisms of the Earth system escape from the “glacial trap” via a set of strongly nonlinear processes are presented. It is also shown that the transition from the 41 kyr to the 100 kyr world about one million years ago can be explained by a gradual increase in the critical size of ice sheets, which in turn is related to the gradual removal of terrestrial sediments from the northern continents. The implications of this nonlinear paradigm for understanding Quaternary climate dynamics and the remaining knowledge gaps are finally discussed.

    Description: Forage supply and soil organic carbon storage are two important ecosystem functions of permanent grasslands, which are determined by climatic conditions, management and functional diversity. However, functional diversity is not independent of climate and management, and it is important to understand the role of functional diversity and these dependencies for ecosystem functions of permanent grasslands. Especially since functional diversity may play a key role in mediating impacts of changing conditions. Large-scale ecosystem models are used to assess ecosystem functions within a consistent framework for multiple climate and management scenarios. However, large-scale models of permanent grasslands rarely consider functional diversity. We implemented a representation of functional diversity based on the CSR theory and the global spectrum of plant form and function into the LPJmL dynamic global vegetation model forming LPJmL-CSR. Using a Bayesian calibration method, we parameterised new plant functional types and used these to assess forage supply, soil organic carbon storage and community composition of three permanent grassland sites. These are a temperate grassland, a hot and a cold steppe for which we simulated several management scenarios with different defoliation intensities and resource limitations. LPJmL-CSR captured the grassland dynamics well under observed conditions and showed improved results for forage supply and/or SOC compared to LPJmL 5.3 at three grassland sites. Furthermore, LPJmL-CSR was able to reproduce the trade-offs associated with the global spectrum of plant form and function and similar strategies emerged independent of the site specific conditions (e.g. the C- and R-PFTs were more resource exploitative than S-PFTs). Under different resource limitations, we observed a shift of the community composition. At the hot steppe for example, irrigation led to a more balanced community composition with similar C-, S- and R-PFT shares of above-ground biomass. Our results show, that LPJmL-CSR allows for explicit analysis of the adaptation of grassland vegetation to changing conditions while explicitly considering functional diversity. The implemented mechanisms and trade-offs are universally applicable paving the way for large-scale application. Applying LPJmL-CSR for different climate change and functional diversity scenarios may generate a range of future grassland productivity.

    Description: The Anthropocene signifies the start of a no-analogue trajectory of the Earth system that is fundamentally different from the Holocene. This new trajectory is characterized by rising risks of triggering irreversible and unmanageable shifts in Earth system functioning. We urgently need a new global approach to safeguard critical Earth system regulating functions more effectively and comprehensively. The global commons framework is the closest example of an existing approach with the aim of governing biophysical systems on Earth upon which the world collectively depends. Derived during stable Holocene conditions, the global commons framework must now evolve in the light of new Anthropocene dynamics. This requires a fundamental shift from a focus only on governing shared resources beyond national jurisdiction, to one that secures critical functions of the Earth system irrespective of national boundaries. We propose a new framework—the planetary commons—which differs from the global commons framework by including not only globally shared geographic regions but also critical biophysical systems that regulate the resilience and state, and therefore livability, on Earth. The new planetary commons should articulate and create comprehensive stewardship obligations through Earth system governance aimed at restoring and strengthening planetary resilience and justice.

    Description: Despite the cost reductions of green hydrogen, it is uncertain when cost parity with blue hydrogen will be achieved. Beyond technology costs, electricity and natural gas prices, hydrogen’s competitiveness will be increasingly determined by carbon costs or regulation associated with its life-cycle emissions. Theoretically and numerically, we demonstrate that higher residual emissions of blue hydrogen can close its competitive window much earlier than the cost parity of green hydrogen suggests. In regions where natural gas prices remain substantially higher (∼40 EUR/MWh) than before the energy crisis, such a window is narrow or has already closed. While blue hydrogen could potentially bridge the scarcity of green hydrogen, uncertainties about the beginning and end of blue hydrogen competitiveness may hinder investments. In contrast, in regions where natural gas prices drop to ≤15 EUR/MWh, blue hydrogen can remain competitive until at least 2040, contingent upon achieving rigorous CO2 capture (〉90%) and negligible methane leakage rates (〈1%).

    Description: Background: Rice predominate diets are common in Bangladesh, leading to widespread nutritional deficiencies. Objective: The Food and Agricultural Approaches to Reducing Malnutrition (FAARM) cluster-randomized controlled trial in rural Sylhet, Bangladesh, evaluated a homestead food production intervention implemented 2015-2018 through Helen Keller International, aiming to improve child growth (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT025-05711). We estimate the impact on women's and children's dietary diversity, a secondary trial objective. Methods: We calculated dietary diversity for women and children using standard measures from data collected throughout the trial (2015-2020). Our analysis included 28,282 observations of 2,701 women (out of 2,705 enrolled) and 17,445 observations of their 3,257 children (aged 6-37 months) in 96 settlements, 48 of which received the intervention. We estimated the intervention's impact on dietary diversity using multilevel regression, controlling for seasonality, baseline dietary diversity, and clustering by settlement and repeated measures. Results: Dietary diversity scores and the proportion of women and children classified as consuming minimally diverse diets varied greatly by season, peaking in May/June with 5.3 food groups for women (out of ten) and 3.8 food groups for children (out of seven). Over the entire intervention and post78 intervention period, women's and children's odds of consuming a minimally diverse diet nearly doubled (OR 1.8, p〈0.001, for both). This benefit was barely present in the first year of the intervention, increased in the second, and peaked in the last intervention year (OR 2.4 for women, OR 2.5 for children, both p〈0.001) before settling at around double the odds in post-intervention years (p〈0.001). Dietary improvement was observed throughout the 82 year for both women and children and driven through incremental increases in nearly all food groups. Conclusions: The nutrition-sensitive agriculture intervention successfully increased dietary diversity in women and children, and these impacts persisted after the project closed, including during the COVID-19 lockdown period.

    Description: This article investigates the group consensus via pinning control for continuous-time first-order and second-order multi-agent systems (MASs) with reference states. For the group consensus of first-order MASs, the dependence between the agent's state and the control input is considered. For second-order MASs, group consensus control without the velocity information of agents is considered. Instead, the virtual velocity estimation controller is designed. Meanwhile, for the designed control protocols, not only under fixed topology, but also under switching topology are considered. It is demonstrated that group consensus could be obtained under the proposed control protocols by using graph theory and stability theory. Finally, a series of numerical examples are provided to verify the control performance of the propounded control protocols.

    Description: Safe and just Earth system boundaries (ESBs) for surface water and groundwater (blue water) have been defined for sustainable water management in the Anthropocene. Here we assessed whether minimum human needs could be met with surface water from within individual river basins alone and, where this is not possible, quantified how much groundwater would be required. Approximately 2.6 billion people live in river basins where groundwater is needed because they are already outside the surface water ESB or have insufficient surface water to meet human needs and the ESB. Approximately 1.4 billion people live in river basins where demand-side transformations would be required as they either exceed the surface water ESB or face a decline in groundwater recharge and cannot meet minimum needs within the ESB. A further 1.5 billion people live in river basins outside the ESB, with insufficient surface water to meet minimum needs, requiring both supply- and demand-side transformations. These results highlight the challenges and opportunities of meeting even basic human access needs to water and protecting aquatic ecosystems.

    Description: The Amazon rainforest is considered one of the Earth's tipping elements and may lose stability under ongoing climate change. Recently a decrease in tropical rainforest resilience has been identified globally from remotely sensed vegetation data. However, the underlying theory assumes a Gaussian distribution of forest disturbances, which is different from most observed forest stressors such as fires, deforestation, or windthrow. Those stressors often occur in power-law-like distributions and can be approximated by α-stable Lévy noise. Here, we show that classical critical slowing down indicators to measure changes in forest resilience are robust under such power-law disturbances. To assess the robustness of critical slowing down indicators, we simulate pulse-like perturbations in an adapted and conceptual model of a tropical rainforest. We find few missed early warnings and few false alarms are achievable simultaneously if the following steps are carried out carefully: First, the model must be known to resolve the timescales of the perturbation. Second, perturbations need to be filtered according to their absolute temporal autocorrelation. Third, critical slowing down has to be assessed using the non-parametric Kendall-τ slope. These prerequisites allow for an increase in the sensitivity of early warning signals. Hence, our findings imply improved reliability of the interpretation of empirically estimated rainforest resilience through critical slowing down indicators.

    Description: The inconsistent pattern of precipitation, a shift in the seasonality of river flows, and the early onset of snow and glacier melt in recent decades across river basins of High Mountain Asia (HMA) has compelled us to further investigate future variations in sources of runoff under projected climate change scenarios. This will help in determining the timing and magnitude of runoff components and this will help in management of future water resources. The current study employed the University of British Columbia Watershed Model (UBC WM) to estimate the spatiotemporal variations in simulated runoff components (i.e. snowmelt, glacier melt, rainfall-runoff, and baseflow) and their relative contribution to total runoff of Gilgit River regarding the baseline period (1981–2010) in near (2021–2050) and far future (2071–2100) under low (SSP1), medium (SSP2) and high (SSP5) emission scenarios. A significant increase in the magnitude of mean annual temperature and precipitation is expected in the near future (2021–2050) than far future (2071–2100) under most SSPs. Moreover, high-altitude stations of the Gilgit River basin are expected to experience more warming in the near and far future than low altitudes under all SSPs. On average, regarding the baseline period, the simulated runoff is projected to increase in the near (27%, 30%, and 33%) and far future (30%, 53%, and 91%) under SSP1, SSP2, and SSP5, respectively. Moreover, an early onset of snow/glacier melting is predicted in the far future due to an increase in summer air temperature and a decline in winter (DJF) precipitation. Besides, the rise in high altitude temperature is expected to cause the melting of snow/glaciers even above 6000 m elevation in the far future.

    Description: In this report, the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change recommends a series of actions to put the EU on track towards climate neutrality. Based on an assessment of more than 80 indicators, the Advisory Board found that more efforts are needed across all sectors to achieve the EU climate objectives from 2030 to 2050, and particularly in buildings, transport, agriculture and forestry. The Advisory Board acknowledges the potential of the Fit for 55 policy package to speed up EU’s decarbonisation, but warns that additional measures are imperative if the EU is to achieve its climate neutrality objective by 2050 at the latest. With this in mind, the Advisory Board outlines 13 key recommendations for a more effective implementation and design of the EU climate policy framework. This will require action in the coming years, both to effectively implement recently agreed legislation and to start preparations for the post-2030 climate policy framework.

Many actions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions can also deliver near-term health co-benefits, for example from reduced air pollution, consumption of healthy diets, and increased physical activity. High-quality evidence on the type and magnitude of co-benefits that can be realised and improved knowledge of how to promote the implementation of such actions can support progress towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Lancet Pathfinder Commission was established to collate and assess the evidence on the near-term health effects of greenhouse gas mitigation, including both modelling studies and evaluated implemented actions. The Commission's aim is to assess the potential and achieved magnitude of the benefits for health and climate of different mitigation actions and, where possible, the factors facilitating or impeding implementation.

    Description: The HERA high-resolution pan-European hydrological reanalysis (1950-2020) dataset is the result of a joint effort between the JRC and PIK to produce a long term hydrological reanalysis with downscaled and bias-corrected climate reanalysis (ERA5-land) and dynamic socioeconomic inputs. It includes maps of climate variables (evaporation, evapotranspiration, precipitation, temperature), dynamic socioeconomic inputs (land use, water demand, reservoir maps) required for hydrological modelling with LISFLOOD and river discharge with European extent at 1 arc minute (~1.5 km) grid resolution and 6-hourly time step. The dataset builds on recent development within the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) associated to the EFAS v5.0 reanalysis (http://data.europa.eu/89h/76b4b9de-a5c6-4344-8d88-c4bed7752ce3), notably the LISFLOOD static and parameters maps for Europe (http://data.europa.eu/89h/f572c443-7466-4adf-87aa-c0847a169f23) and the EMO (European Meteorological Observations) dataset (http://data.europa.eu/89h/0bd84be4-cec8-4180-97a6-8b3adaac4d26). HERA also benefits from major improvements to the open-source hydrological model LISFLOOD and a new model calibration. Furthermore, for ungauged catchments, a parameter regionalization was performed transferring parameter sets from donor catchments based on spatial and climatological proximity to ensure the best possible simulation of river flows for all catchments in the European domain. Along with improved resolution and modelling performances, the length of the modelled period (71 years) and the inclusion of dynamic socioeconomic conditions enables the analysis of hydrological dynamics related to extremes, human influences, and climate change at a continental scale while keeping local relevance.
