    Notes: Abstract The content and distribution of nitrate in groundwater and surface water in the Karup Basin area have been investigated and analyzed. In addition to existing analyses, chemical profiles of the groundwater of the upper part of the water table sand aquifer were measured at a number of sites. The profiles indicate, in general, an upper oxidation zone with nitrate and a lower reduction zone free of nitrate. However, below plantation areas, the nitrate content in the oxidation zone is significantly low as well. The eight profiles are graphed separately, and all results are finally plotted on a single map by a graphic method that takes into consideration both the concentration and the level of the sampled water. The great variation in the nitrate content of the water from one water-supply well to another can easily be explained by plotting the values on maps using this graphing procedure, in conjunction with an examination of the nitrate zonation found in the profiles. The influence of agricultural activities is significantly related to the concentration of nitrate in surface water and groundwater under such water table conditions and circumstances as are found in the Karup Basin.

    Notes: Abstract A number of aspects related to vulnerability maps are discussed: the vulnerability concept, mapping purposes, possible users, and applicability of vulnerability maps. Problems associated with general-type vulnerability mapping, including large-scale maps, universal pollutant, and universal pollution scenario are also discussed. An alternative approach to vulnerability assessment—specific vulnerability mapping for limited areas, specific pollutant, and predefined pollution scenario—is suggested. A simplification of the vulnerability concept is proposed in order to make vulnerability maps more objective and by this means more comparable. An extension of the vulnerability concept to the rest of the hydrogeologicar cycle (lakes, rivers, and the sea) is proposed. Some recommendations regarding future activities are given.

    Notes: Abstract A study of the homogeneity between putative stocks of Phocoena phocoena in the North Sea and inner Danish waters was performed using isozyme electrophoresis. Two polymorphic systems, mannose phosphate isomerase (MPI) and phosphoglucomutase (PGM) were used in the analysis. A two-locus homogeneity test showed an effect of season and locality on the genotypic distribution. This led to a division of the total sample into season and into the two localities, the inner Danish waters (IDW) and the North Sea. The samples were then compared to the Hardy-Weinberg expectations where a deficit in heterozygotes was observed in the North Sea sample in both systems and at the Pgm locus in the total sample, indicating a mixing of sub-populations. A hierarchical contingency table analysis, also based on the genotypic distribution, showed a combined effect of season and locality and only an insignificant effect of sampling period, thus supporting the division into season and locatily. The seasonal effect is further supported by earlier observations of a seasonal migration of harbour porpoises out of the Baltic in winter. A significant difference was observed between the two supposed sub-populations, IDW-summer and North Sea-summer samples, based on the genotypic distribution. This could also be a reflection of the sample sizes. On the basis of samples obtained from Canada, West Greenland and Holland a preliminary study of the population structure on a larger scale, comprising the North East and North West Atlantic, was performed. The results so far accord well with the hitherto accepted sub-populations of P. phocoena in the North Atlantic.

NF1 is characterized by neurofibromas, café-au-lait spots and Lisch nodules of the iris. The NF1 gene is located in 17q11.2. The restriction fragment length polymorphism reported here will be useful in linkage analysis in NF1 families.

    Notes: Absolute cross sections for electron-impact detachment and electron-impact dissociation of CN− and BO− were measured for electron energies from threshold to 40 eV. With both ions we see only little dissociation when electron detachment occurs. In the case of CN− a resonance in the detachment cross section is discovered at an energy of ∼10 eV. No resonances were seen in the case of BO−. We argue that the resonance observed for CN− is due to an excited state of the dianion. The nonresonant part of the detachment cross section is found to follow the classical prediction given by Andersen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 892 (1995)]. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: New short-lived resonance states of NO22− have been studied by bombarding NO2− anions by low-energy, mono-energetic electrons at the ASTRID heavy-ion storage ring. Storage for several seconds before the measurement ensures full vibrational relaxation of NO2− target anions. The dianion resonances were identified by the detection of resonances in the cross section for formation of neutral NO2. Two resonances were observed: The one of lowest energy is assigned to be the ground state of NO22− based on an ab initio calculation. This state may be held by a Coulomb barrier alone. A second state of significantly higher energy is argued to be held by a combined Coulomb and centrifugal barrier. Finally, a new scheme in which electron recombination may create stable dianions is proposed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new fast beam photofragment apparatus for studies of electronic and nuclear dynamics is described. The experimental setup involves a chopped ion beam crossed at 90° by a pulsed laser beam. Photofragments are extracted parallel to the ion beam direction and imaged on a multisphere plate (MSP) detector. The time of flight of a photofragment from the interaction point to the MSP detector is determined by a coincidence technique. The setup allows determination of the photofragment energy and the direction of emission for each event of photofragmentation. In photoelectron spectrometry the energy resolution is tunable down to the meV region. For testing, the apparatus has been applied to photodetachment of Li−(1S) at 1064 nm. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
