Notes: Abstract We investigated the role of seed packaging (division of total seed volume among individual seeds) and fruit color in determining feeding preferences of American Robins (Turdus migratorius). Experiments were conducted using artificial fruits with either 8 small plastic beads or a single large one with equivalent volume. Other fruit characters were held constant. As predicted, large seeds were voided rapidly by regurgitation, resulting in higher pulp consumption rates for large-seeded fruits than for small-seeded ones, whose seeds were passed through the gut. Most birds apparently used this difference in profitability as a choice criterion: four of seven preferred large-seeded fruits. That three individuals did not do so suggests that birds may differ in their ability to perceive minor differences in fruit profitability, or to use them as choice criteria. Pulp color was also important: blue fruits were preferred by all seven birds. This preference was surprising, since Robins commonly feed on red fruits in the field.

Notes: Abstract Statisticalt tests were used to determine lead, copper, and chromium enrichment in sediments from the Lower Branch of the Rouge River in southeast Michigan, USA. Both absolute metal concentrations and ratios of trace metal to conservative metal concentrations were used to compare sampled sites along the Lower Branch of the Rouge River to background sites in the headwaters region. Concentration ratios were used to reduce the effects of certain chemical and physical characteristics on the level of metal contained in a given sediment. Results from the comparison of sample sites to the background reveal metal enrichment at several sites, particularly along the highly urbanized, downstream section of the river. This section of the Lower Branch of the Rouge River exhibits significant lead and copper contamination, as well as measurable chromium enrichment when using either concentrations alone or ratios as methods of comparison. The areas of metal enrichment appear to coincide closely with areas of known anthropogenic activities. Of particular interest, however, is the enrichment of lead and copper at two upstream sites where the statistical tests suggest an anthropogenic source for the enrichment, but where no previously known cultural activities existed. These data prompted a historical search of records, which discovered several abandoned landfills immediately upstream of the metal enrichment sites.

Notes: Summary The PstI polymorphism detected by probe KM19 is a highly informative marker in linkage disequilibrium with the cystic fibrosis locus and has been used extensively for prenatal diagnosis. The currently available primers used for polymerase chain reaction- (PCR-) based analysis of this locus have been shown to produce spurious amplification products. In this report, we describe the sequence of the KM19 locus and the major contaminating PCR product. We have used this information to design a more specific amplification procedure for analysis of the KM19 locus.

Notes: Summary Nine healthy adults were administered indocyanine green (ICG) 0.5 mg·kg−1 IV alone and after the administration of the following oral drugs: nifedipine 10 mg, propranolol 80 mg, propranolol 80 mg and nifedipine 10 mg, and propranolol 80 mg after nifedipine 10 mg every 8 h for 5 days. Heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) were also determined. Nifedipine increased ICG clearance by 14% and decreased t1/2 by 26%. Propranolol decreased ICG clearance by 21% and increased t1/2 42%. Nifedipine and propranolol given together increased ICG clearance 63% and decreased t1/2 by 19%. All changes were statistically significant. Propranolol given after multiple doses of nifedipine did not change ICG kinetic parameters. Propranolol Cmax, tmax, oral clearance, and t1/2 did not change after nifedipine therapy. However, partial propranolol AUC values between 0–0.33, 0–0.5, 0–1.0 and 0–1.5 h were significantly larger after single and multiple doses of nifedipine indicating higher propranolol concentrations during the absorption phase. Heart rate and MAP did not change after nifedipine treatment. Similar declines in heart rate and MAP occurred after propranolol alone and propranolol after single and multiple doses of nifedipine.

Notes: The volatile alcohols in ripe bananas were identified in preparation for the study of their biosynthesis. The following 13 alcohols were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry supported in some cases by IR spectral data: ethanol, propan-l-01, P-methylpropan-l-01, butan-l-01, pentan-2–01, 3-methylbutan-l-01, hexan-l-01, heptan-2–01, cis and tram hex-3-en-l-01, cis and traws hex-4-en-l-01, and cis pent-2-en-l-01 (tentative). 2-Methylbutan-l-01 was shown to be associated with 3-methylbutan-l-01 in a ratio of 1:200.

Notes: [Auszug] One possibility is that the aldehydes form weak addition compounds with the sulphonic acid function. By analogy with the reaction between benzaldehyde, benzene sulphonyl chloride and sodium cyanide, which afforded a-cyanobenzyl benzene sulphonate2, this addition compound could be formed thus : OH ...

Notes: [Auszug] SINCE the work reported in the previous article, we have found that under more vigorous conditions (3 hr. at 120 ) disaccharides of the O-glycosyl type are also formed. The isolation and characterization of one of these, 6-O-mannosyl D-glucosamine hydrochloride, is the subject of the present ...
