Notizen: Summary Physical, chemical, and population changes among microorganisms in a eucalyptus bark mix were examined during composting. The microbial succession was studied in detail by dilution plating. The CO2 evolution corresponded to high microbial numbers. The pH increased rapidly, from 4 to 7.5, before stabilizing at approximately 6.5. Composting increased the availability of most nutrients. Initially, bacteria and filamentous fungi appeared to be the main decomposing organisms. With time, however, yeasts and actinomycetes increased in numbers. The numbers of spore-forming bacteria (Bacillus spp.) and pseudomonads also increased with time. The compost was initially phytotoxic, but ceased to be so within 76 days.

Notizen: Summary The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental requirements of Eisenia fetida (Lumbricidae) and its relation to Enchytraeus albidus (Enchytraeidae). Specimens of Eisenia fetida were cultured at two different temperatures (15°C and 25°C) and moisture conditions (50% and 80%) in presence or absence of Enchytraeus albidus. Eisenia fetida grew best at the higher temperature and amount of moisture. Enchytraeus albidus impaired the growth of Eisenia fetida at the higher temperature. When Enchytraeus albidus was present, the mortality of Eisenia fetida increased. Interaction between Eisenia fetida and Enchytraeus albidus was shown, although the mechanisms remain unclear. These species, coexisting in the same habitat (compost), appear to have slightly different niches: Eisenia fetida favours warmer, moister conditions than Enchytraeus albidus.

Notizen: Summary Cultures of Azolla sp. ST-SI, A. microphylla BR-GI, A. mexicana BR-GL, A. caroliniana WT-V, and A. filiculoides BR -H were grown in N-free International Rice Research Institute growth medium in the glasshouse at 38±1 °C (day) and 25±1 °C (night) under a light intensity of 350 μEm2s−1 for 27 days. Biomass, chlorophyll contents and nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction assay) were recorded on the 19th and 27th day. For comparison the same parameters were studied in Azolla spp. under normal growth conditions at 26±1 °C (day) and 19±1 °C (night). Azolla sp. STSI and A. microphylla BR-GI had produced a larger biomass by the 19th and the 27th day of incubation than A. caroliniana WTV and A. filiculoides which showed poor growth. Under normal growth conditions A. caroliniana WTV and A. filiculoides BRH produced less biomass than the other Azolla spp. cultures tested. A. mexicana BR-GL had a higher total chlorophyll content in both incubation periods than A. caroliniana WT-V and A. filiculoides BR-H. The N content was high in Azolla sp. ST-SI, A. microphylla BR-GI, and A. mexicana BR-GL compared with the low N content of A. filiculoides BR-H and A. caroliniana WT-V. At the higher temperature (38±1 °C/25±1 °C) Azolla sp. ST-SI and A. microphylla BR-GI consistently showed a higher growth rate than A. filiculoides BR-H and A. caroliniana WTV, while the growth rate of A. mexicana BR-GL was intermediate.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of cloud feedback on the response of a radiative-convective model to a change in cloud model parameters, atmospheric CO2 concentration, and solar constant has been studied using two different parameterization schemes. The method for simulating the vertical distribution of both cloud cover and cloud optical thickness, which depends on the relative humidity and on the saturation mixing ratio of water vapor, respectively, is the same in both approaches, but the schemes differ with respect to modeling the water vapor profile. In scheme I atmospheric water vapor is coupled to surface parameters, while in scheme II an explicit balance equation for water vapor in the individual atmospheric layers is used. For both models the combined effect of feedbacks due to variations in lapse rate, cloud cover, and cloud optical thickness results in different relationships between changes in surface temperature, planetary temperature, and cloud cover. Specifically, for a CO2 doubling and a 2% increase in solar constant, in both models the surface warming is reduced by cloud feedback, in contrast to no feedback, with the greater reduction in scheme I as compared to that of scheme II.

Notizen: Abstract Alpine lakes in siliceous catchments of Tyrol and Carinthia (Austria) show signs of acidification. About 9% of the studied lakes have no alkalinity, more than 20% are below pH 6. About two thirds of all lakes have acid neutralizing capacities below 100 μeq 1−1. In spite of moderate precipitation acidity, some lakes show considerable concentrations of dissolved reactive aluminum during or shortly after snowmelt. High altitude lakes of the Alps are definitely more acidic than high mountain lakes in remote areas. Large differences in water and soil chemistry of nearby situated lakes were attributed to heterogeneities of bedrock geology. Paleolimnological investigations on former pH values of five lakes, based on diatom assemblages in the sediment, showed different developments: recent and past acidification, stable conditions, and alkalinization.

Notizen: Abstract The study is focused on patterns of daily deaths in Shanghai for the period from 1 May 1979 to 30 April 1980. From May to September the deaths in all age groups are lower, but increase gradually from October and reach to a peak in February. This confirms results found in other countries, namely the death rate is increased in winter. The peak for the population aged over 70 is the highest of the three different age groups. Correlation analyses were carried out on three temperature parameters (daily minimum, maximum and mean temperatures) and six categories of death (heart disease, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease and total deaths). The results reveal that the average daily temperature is very significant for the six categories of death. There are three correlations: straight line relationship, parabolic relationship and exponential relationship. These different types arise from the different morbidity rates. Death from the different disease is also increased during days when the daily maximum temperature is over 35° C or the daily minimum temperature is below 0°C. This shows, in general, that days of extreme temperature lead to an increase in the death rate.

Notizen: Abstract Mortality from acute myocardial infarction (MI) over the 5 year period 1982–1987 in Brown County, Wisconsin, was analyzed to assess the relationship with environmental temperature. Deaths occurrring on the day of and the day following a significant snowfall as well as deaths occuring in health care facilities were eliminated from consideration because the focus was upon temperature, not snowfall or events within a hospital. These criteria resulted in the inclusion of 1,802 days and 926 cases of acute MI. The mean temperature on the day of death was obtained from climatological data and were grouped into six categories covering a range of temperatures from〈−17.8°C (0°F) to 16.1°C (61°F). The number of deaths in each category was tabulated. The effect of temperature, sex, and age were analyzed by regression analysis. The results indicated a linear increase in mortality as mean daily temperature decreased over the temperature range. The inverse temperature effect was most pronounced in males over the age of 60. These results indicate that cold temperatures appear to be associated with an increased mortality from myocardial infarction.

Notizen: Abstract The incidence of mortality from myocardial infarction over a 2-year period in Montreal is examined in relation to temperatures and snowfall. Mortality is seen to increase with deviations from seasonally determined thermally neutral conditions, although compared to observations of a parallel study in subtropical Brisbane, death rates are lower with similar falls in temperature. In Montreal, mortality is also seen to increase with snow during the previous day. During anomalous cold spells death frequencies decrease, a phenomenon interpreted as the behavioural thermoregulatory process of cold avoidance.

Notizen: Abstract The various effects that temperature can exert on biological periodicities are reviewed. Particular consideration is given to the remarkable capability of many rhythms either to respond in a temperature dependent manner, especially in nonsteady-state conditions, or to behave almost independently of temperature (‘temperature compensated’) in the steady state. Therefore, organisms are able both to use temperature changes as synchronization cues and to measure time at different temperatures. Moreover, changes of temperature can induce transients, after-effects, and eventually alterations in the phase response behaviour, sometimes even the rhythmicity itself. Treatment with low temperatures can, at least in some cases, hold the circadian clock, and considerably reduce the sensitivity of rhythms towards certain drugs.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of temperature and vapour pressure deficit on the flight activity ofSimulium arcticum were defined under controlled laboratory conditions. Optimum conditions of temperature and vapour pressure deficit for flight activity varied with time of exposure to the environmental conditions. By applying polynomial equations for the various response surfaces it was possible to predict the time-dependent, optimal hygrothermal environment for black-fly flight activity. Greatest variability in flight activity occurred just prior to death of the insects. Mortality of flies after 1 h exposures to the experimental conditions occurred only at high temperatures and vapour pressure deficits. With increased time of exposure, mortality increased at lower temperatures and vapour pressure deficits.

Notizen: Summary The effect of temperature on embryonic development, voltinism, and hatching was studied in the laboratory in eggs of 21 Central and Southeastern European Tettigoniidae species. In most species, the embryo has to arrive at a postkatatrepsis stage prior to the onset of cold to be able to hatch in the following spring. The rate of embryonic development differs: quickly developing species need 4 weeks at 24°C (prior to cold) and almost all eggs hatch after the first cold treatment, slowly developing species would need 8–12 weeks to do the same. In Central Europe, warmth is not enough for the slowly developing species to have an univoltine life cycle, but they could have it in southern Europe. Most species make use of a dormancy sequence to pass successive winters as follows: an initial embryonic dormancy (either quiscence or diapause in embryonic stage 4) and a final diapause in embryonic stage 23/24. Additionally, 3 forms of aestivation or summer dormancy were observed facultatively: an initial diapause in embryonic stage 4 (induced and terminated at 30°C), a median dormancy shortly before or after katatrepsis (at 30°C), and a penultimate diapause in embryonic stage 20 (at 24°C). The life cycles of the European Tettigoniidae species can follow one of 3 types: 1. annual life cycle (no initial embryonic dormancy); 2. annual or biennial depending on whether laid early or late; 3. biennial or many year life cycle (up to 8 years due to a prolonged initial diapause).

Notizen: Summary The influence of temperature, stratification, red/far-red ratio of the light (R/FR) and combinations of these factors on the germination of Plantago lanceolata and Plantago major ssp major have been investigated under controlled conditions. Only quantitative differences were found in the response of the species to the various environmental factors investigated except for germination in darkness. P. lanceolata germinated in darkness, the percentage depending on environmental factors and seed collection, whereas P. major seed swere found to have a virtually absolute light requirement. P. lanceolata germinated at lower temperatures and was less inhibited at a low R/FR than P. major. Pot experiments and a field experiment were carried out in order to study the influence of the presence of grass on germination and emergence. P. major was more inhibited than P. lanceolata when sown among grass and the presence of vegetation did not inhibit the germination of P. lanceolata in the field experiment. The latter could be ascribed to the dormancy alleviating effect of low winter temperatures to which the seeds had been subjected. The inhibition of emergence of P. major among grass could be explained by the light factor only, whereas in the case of P. lanceolata an additional factor must be involved.

Notizen: Summary Ligia oceanica can change its colour using melanophores, the animal's reflectance varying between about 2 and 10%. Darker individuals heat up more quickly, and to higher body temperatures, than do pale ones. Colour change shows an underlying circadian rhythm, though the pattern of this rhythm varies with temperature, humidity, background and time of year. In general the rhythm is such as to ensure maximum camouflage at the critical dusk period, but in some conditions hygrothermal needs are overriding and the animals are paler (to stay cool) or darker (to warm up). In addition, animals show short term colour modification; when transferred to differing backgrounds and temperatures their colours initially reflect background matching, but after 30–45 min are modified into thermally appropriate shades, dark at 5° C and pale at 20° C. Field-caught specimens showed body temperatures that varied with colouration, and modification of colour in relation to thermal needs, particularly by being paler than expected when forced into the open by daytime high tides, and darker than expected when active prior to dusk. Animals invariably selected dark backgrounds in choice chambers. However, choice of humidity depended on previous experience; saturated air was normally preferred, but warm animals chose drier air (to allow evaporative cooling) unless also water-stressed. They also tended to disperse to facilitate cooling, whereas aggregation increased with increasing RH and with decreasing temperature. The interactions of colour changes, behavioural choices, and activity patterns in controlling the hygrothermal belance of Ligia in the intertidal environment are discussed in the light of these results.

Notizen: Summary To investigate the physiological, behavioral, and genetic contributions to growth rate, we studied the thermal sensitivity of growth rate in hatchlings of the iguanid lizards Sceloporus occidentalis and S. graciosus in the laboratory. We used a cycling thermal regime patterned after thermal environments found in nature. Growth rates increased with duration of access to radiant heat. Thus, variation in the thermal environment can cause phenotypic variation in growth rate and hence body size. The two species differed in both the magnitude and thermal sensitivity of growth rate, and these differences were associated with differences in behavioral thermoregulation. Thus, growth is determined interactively by both behavior and physiology. We found evidence of among-family variation in the growth rates of S. occidentalis, suggesting that growth rate has the genetic potential to evolve. In S. occidentalis, both growth rate and egg size affected body size of hatchlings at several weeks of age. In turn, hatchling size may affect fitness: for example, larger S. occidentalis hatchlings had higher sprint speeds and may therefore be more adept at capturing prey or evading predators. Our results demonstrate that growth rate has genetic, behavioral, and physiological components, and that the resulting effects on body size may have important consequences for ecological performance e.g., sprint speed.

Notizen: Summary The dynamics of leaf extension in five species of Poa were studied with electronic auxanometers (LVDTs) along an elevational gradient from 600 to 3200 m in the Austrian Alps. Extension rates peak at midday at all elevations and rates at 20°C are almost twice as high at low elevation as compared with those from the highest sites. The low temperature threshold for leaf extension drops by 7 K over this range of elevation, with plants from the highest sites showing some extension around freezing point. Thus, there is a substantial adaptive adjustment in response of leaf extension to declining mean temperatures with increasing altitude, which is not paralleled by known altitudinal trends of photosynthetic responses in herbaceous plants.

Notizen: Summary 1) When a thermal gradient (20–40° C) was established along a laboratory nest, Camponotus mus nurse workers showed a photoperiodic circadian rhythm of temperature preferences for brood rearing. Two different temperatures were daily selected to translocate the brood, i.e. 30.8° C selected at the middle of the photophase, and 27.5° C selected during the scotophase, 8 h later. 2) The daily temperature response of nurse workers consisted of paired high and low-temperature translocations, with a 8 hs-interval in between: high-temperature translocation was shown to be entrained by the photophase length, whereas low-temperature translocation was shown to be dependent on the precedent one. 3) Prey deprivation to the colony modified the brood transport behaviors resulting in translocations of only cocoons and large (ripe) larvae, stages in which the pupation processes are triggered. Small larvae and eggs remained located at 27.5° C. 4) Evaluation of pupa developmental time as well as percentage of pupa mortality at different temperature regimes allowed to construct an efficiency index relating pupa survival and cocoon developmental time. In the range of temperatures selected by nurses, the index reached its maximal values. 5) The ecological significance of these results is discussed.

Notizen: Summary Few quantitative studies have examined the ecological consequences of similarities and/or differences in mating behaviour of parapatric species. Reproductive interference occurs between several parapatric species of Australian reptile tick, due to similarities in their mating behaviour (Andrews et al. 1982a). Attempts to determine whether reproductive interference serves to maintain parapatry between Amblyomma limbatum and Aponomma hydrosauri have been hindered because of difficulties in providing conditions conducive to conspecific mating in Amb. limbatum. The present study examined whether off-host and/or onhost temperature influenced the subsequent mating behaviour (i.e. the proportion of females that mate and the time when mating occurs) of these two species. Irrespective of the temperature experienced by ticks prior to host attachment, specific on-host temperatures were needed to induce mating in Amb. limbatum (i.e. host cloacal temperatures 〉32° C prior to the time of peak mating activity). Significantly more Amb. limbatum females were mated and the time taken by females to mate decreased with increasing on-host temperatures. mating in Ap. hydrosauri occurred over a wider range of on-host temperatures and the time when mating occurred did not alter at different on-host temperatures. In addition, significantly more Ap. hydrosauri males moved and each male made more moves on hosts than did Amb. limbatum males. It is suggested that Ap. hydrosauri may in consequence have a competitive mating advantage over Amb. limbatum at a boundary. Similarities in mating behaviour, on the other hand, increase the probability of reproductive interference, hence reduce the reproductive fitness of colonizing females of both species. We propose that similarities and differences in mating behaviour could play a critical role in the maintenance of parapatric boundaries.

Notizen: Summary Life history theory suggests that reproductive characteristics such as ovum size and clutch size should be well buffered against vararies of the environment. However, studies which demonstrate environmental sensitivity of reproductive characteristics are increasing in number, as are studies which find that maternal effects are responsible for much of the variation in developmental and growth rates in embryonic and larval fish and amphibians. The data reported here demonstrate that the environment, in terms of temperature and food availability that a specific individual encounters during vitellogenesis, exerts a strong influence on both egg size and number. Warmer temperatures and less food decrease ovum size, while colder temperatures and less food decrease clutch size. The variation in ovum size that is induced by the environment can exert a strong influence on variation in offspring development and growth and serve as an excellent model for studies on the evolution of developmental plasticity.

Notizen: Summary The competitive interactions between two distantly related fish species, roach (Rutilus rutilus) and perch (Perca fluviatilis), were studied in enclosures in two habitats. In the open water habitat dominated by small planktonic prey perch grew more slowly and altered its diet from zooplankton to benthic macroinvertebrates when in the presence of roach. No effect, however, of perch on roach was observed. This was probably caused by the higher foraging efficiency of roach on zooplankton (laboratory experiments) and to the presence of a resource utilizable only by roach, bluegreen algae/detritus. In the littoral habitat no interspecific effects were detected even though resources were more limiting. This was probably a consequence of the higher densities of chironomids, on which perch fed more efficiently than roach, and of the presence of bluegreen algae/detritus. Roach, which consumed a larger spectrum of food types than perch, as a result was less affected by competition. The distributions of the species in the lake corresponded to what could be predicted from experiments. The degree of resource limitation varied with season and was highest in summer, while no resource limitation was observed in spring. This variation in resource limitation is probably caused by the increased metabolic demands of the fish in summer.

Notizen: Summary Developmental rate and adult weight were studied at constant temperatures from 9.8 to 27.9°C for 18 clones from each of five populations of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), from locations between 39 and 53°N latitude in central North America. The response of developmental rate to temperature for each clone was accurately described by a three parameter non-linear equation. Adult weight usually decreased with increasing rearing temperature, but the shape of the response to temperature varied among clones. Variation in the developmental parameters was greater among clones within populations than among populations. No consistent trends were observed in the developmental parameters or adult weights either with latitude or the long term average temperatures at the locations. We conclude that previously reported geographic variation in the developmental threshold of this species, which was attributed to local adaptation, occurred either because the clones tested were not representative of the populations or because rearing methods differed among studies. The results are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that life history traits which are temperature sensitive are adapted to local thermal environments.

Notizen: Summary The adaptive significance of alpine melanism, the tendancy for insects to become darker with increased elevation and latitude, was investigated using the butterfly Parnassius phoebus. The effects on temperature dependent activity of five components of overall wing melanism, as well as size, were examined. The components of wing melanism examined were the transparency of the basal hindwing and distal fore-wing areas, the width of the black patch in the basal hind-wing area and the proportion of black to white scales in that area, and the proportion of the distal fore-wing covered by predominantly black scaling. The body temperature of dead specimens was correlated with air temperature, solar radiation, the width of the black patch at the base of the wings, and the proportion of black to white scales at the base of the wings. The minimum air temperatures and solar radiation levels required for initiation of flight did not vary with wing melanism of P. phoebus, in contrast to the results found for Colias butterflies by Roland (1982). However, under environmental conditions suitable for flight initiation, males with a higher proportion of black to white scales in the basal area of the hind-wing, and wider basal black patches, spent a greater proportion of time in flight at low air temperatures and low insolation. Increased basal wing melanism was also associated with increased movement of males within a population. In contrast, melanism in the distal area of the wings has no effect on activities which are dependant on body temperature. The amount of time spent feeding did not vary with differences in wing melanism. I suggest that in dorsal basking, slow-flying butterflies (Parnassius) basal wing color affects body temperature primarily during flight (rather than while basking), such that butterflies with darker wing bases cool down less rapidly because they absorb more solar radiation during flight.

Notizen: Summary Changes in species diversity are examined in relation to a multidimensional environmental gradient using Eucalyptus species in south-eastern Australia. By fitting a generalized linear model, the response of the community parameter, species diversity, is shown to be related to three environmental variables, mean annual rainfall, mean annual temperature and a relative measure of solar radiation. The effects of rainfall and temperature were both statistically significant and large, solar radiation was significant but small. However, the influence of the two major variables was not independent but interacted in a complex way that prevents adequate description of species diversity as a function of either variable alone. Possible biological explanations of the complexity are discussed in terms of limiting conditions at low temperatures, and competition between guilds of species at high temperatures and medium to high rainfall.

Notizen: Summary The sum of effective temperatures (SET) and lower development threshold (LDT) were established for eggs and/or pupae of central European populations of 20 species of chrysopid, coccinellid, hemerobiid, and syrphid predators of aphids. LDT ranged between 5.6° and 12.2°C, SET between 38.3 and 140.9 day degrees (dd), with broad overlap among stages and taxa. When LDT was plotted against SET, the data for both eggs and pupae were scattered along a single regression line which predicted a 0.47°C decrease in LDT per 10 dd increase in SET (r=-0.77, p〈0.001). A regression calculated from published data from all over the world predicted a 0.24°C/10 dd decrease in LDT, and the data were more scattered (r=-0.38, p〈0.01). This is perhaps the first report on the functional relationship between LDT and SET at the interspecific level. The species and stages differed in typical development length (VDL) and in the extent of its deceleration by low temperatures (DD). DD increased with increasing VDL, but the relative effect of low temperature on development length (DD/VDL ratio) reflected thermal adaptations consistent with the life history of the species. Polyvoltine species were less affected by low temperatures than monovoltine species, particularly the thermophilic ones.

Notizen: Summary Photosynthetic characteristics of three species of Sphagnum common in the foothills of the Brooks Range on the North Slope of Alaska were investigated. Generally, light-saturated rates of net photosynthesis decreased in the order S. squarrosum, S. angustifolium, and S. warnstorfii when plants were grown under common growth chamber conditions. For field-grown S. angustifolium, average light compensation point at 10°C was 37 μmol m-2s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and light saturation occurred between 250 and 500 μmol m-2 s-1. At 20°C, compensation point increased to 127 μmol m-2s-1 and the PPFD required for light saturation increased to approximately 500 μmol m-2s-1, while maximum rates of CO2 uptake increased only slightly. Light response curves of chamber-grown plants exhibited substantially lower compensation points and higher light-saturated rates of CO2 assimilation than field-grown material, due perhaps to a higher percentage of green, photosynthetically competent tissue. All three species exhibited broad responses to temperature, with optima near 20°C, and maintained at least 75% of maximum assimilation between approx. 13° and 30°C. Rates at 5°C were approx. 50% of maximum. Studies of the microclimate of Sphagnum at the field research site suggest that CO2 uptake should occur at near light-saturated rates during the day in open tussock tundra but that PPFD may often be limiting under Salix and Betula canopies in a water track drainage. Simulations using a simple model provided a seasonal estimate of 0.78 g dry weight (DW) of S. angustifolium produced from each initial g of photosynthetic tissue under willow canopies, assuming no water limitations. Although the simulation model suggests that production would be 66% higher in open tussock tundra, S. angustifolium is rarely found in this potentially more stressful habitat. To explain the relative abundance of Sphagnum in shaded water track areas as compared to open tussock tundra, we postulate that the vascular plant canopies provide protection from adverse effects of high temperatures, excess irradiance and reduced water availability. Under conditions of normal water availability, removal of the vascular plant cover did not affect the tissue water content of S. squarrosum, but resulted in a strong decrease in photosynthetic capacity, accompanied by chlorophyll bleaching. These results suggest that photoinhibition may limit production under certain conditions.

Notizen: Summary The apparent energy of activation (E a), Michaelis-Menten constant (K mfor oxaloacetate), V max/K mratios and specific activities of NADP+-malate dehydrogenase (NADP+-MDH; EC 1.1.1.82) were analyzed in plants of Barnyard grass from Québec (QUE) and Mississippi (MISS) acclimated to two thermoperiods 28/22°C, 21/15°C, and grown under two CO2 concentrations, 350 μl l-1 and 675 μl l-1. E avalues of NADP+-MDH extracted from QUE plants were significantly lower than those of MISS plants. K mvalues and V max/K mratios of the enzyme from both ecotypes were similar over the range of 10–30°C but reduced V max/K mratios were found for the enzyme of QUE plants at 30 and 40°C assays. MISS plants had higher enzyme activities when measured on a chlorophyll basis but this trend was reversed when activities were expressed per fresh weight leaf or per leaf surface area. Activities were significantly higher in plants of both populations acclimated to 22/28°C. CO2 enrichment did not modify appreciably the catalytic properties of NADP+-MDH and did not have a compensatory effect upon catalysis or enzyme activity under cool acclimatory conditions. NADP+-MDH activities were always in excess of the amount required to support observed rates of CO2 assimilation and these two parameters were significantly correlated. The enhanced photosynthetic performance of QUE plants under cold temperature conditions, as compared to that of MISS plants, cannot be attributed to kinetic differences of NADP+-malate dehydrogenase among these ecotypes.

Notizen: Summary Low yield in seed crops of perennial ryegrass is related to low fertilization efficiency and low temperature during anthesis. To study the effect of genotype and temperature on pollen performance, we conducted greenhouse experiments at controlled temperatures. Individual florets of four genotypes that are known to differ in seed production were hand pollinated at four temperatures (14°, 18°, 22°, 26° C) both in vivo and via a semiin-vitro method involving excised florets on agar. Pollen germination and tube growth were determined with UV-fluorescence microscopy and scored in six classes at 2 h after pollination in vitro and after 0.5, 2 and 5 h in vivo. In vitro, both genotype and temperature had a significant effect on the performance of self-pollen. Pollen tube growth increased with temperature. In cross-pollinations, the pistil parent had a significant effect on pollen tube growth, and there was also a significant pistil-by-temperature interaction. In vivo, genotype and temperature significantly affected pollen performance. The genotype-by-temperature interaction was only significant 5 h after pollination. One genotype with low seed yield was pseudoself-compatible and was a relatively poor mother after cross-pollination. The effects of genotype and temperature on the growth of self-pollen might be exploited in a breeding programme.

Notizen: Summary Polypeptides were extracted from stamens of a rapeseed (Brassica napus) cultivar, Regent, a near isogenic male-sterile line, Polima-R7 (Pol-R7), and a high-temperature-restored malefertile Pol-R7 (TR) and subsequently separated by two-dimensional isoelectric focusing-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions. Four variable polypeptides with a pI around 6 were observed. Two stamen polypeptides (40000 Da, 38000 Da) were unique to Regent, and the other two (32000 Da, 30000 Da) were unique to the male-sterile Pol-R7. When the male-sterile Pol-R7 was treated with day/night temperatures of 30°/24° C for 7–10 days prior to flowering, both polypeptides unique to Regent reappeared, while the smaller polypeptides disappeared. Temperature-restored male-fertile Pol-R7 (TR) produced fertile pollen, while its short stamen filaments resembled those of the male-sterile Pol-R7. These changes in protein expression may be causally related to the CMS phenotype.

Notizen: Abstract A procedure was devised for analyzing in vivo nitrogenase activity in Beggiatoa alba B18LD which involves: (1) the induction of nitrogenase in cells pre-grown on NH4Cl, by washing the cells free of NH4Cl and lowering their exposure to oxygen, and (2) measuring acetylene reduction by these cells. Using this induction methodology we examined the effects of pH, temperature, and nitrogenous compounds on in vivo nitrogenase induction and activity in Beggiatoa alba B18LD. Nitrate and nitrite repressed the induction of nitrogenase activity, but glutamine did not. Induction and activity had a combined pH optimum of 6.5 to 8.0, and activity had a temperature optimum of 29°C. Ammonium and urea caused immediate inhibition of nitrogenase activity, but nitrate, nitrite, glutamine, asparagine, and other amino acids did not. Ammonium-induced inhibition was transient and incomplete, and the duration of inhibition increased in direct proportion to the amount of ammonium added. Methionine sulfoximine, a glutamine synthetase inhibitor, at a final concentration of 50 μM blocked ammonium uptake by cells, but did not prevent nitrogenase inhibition if added before ammonium. Our results imply that B. alba nitrogenase inhibition by ammonium: (1) is not directly caused by ammonium assimilation products, (2) is probably not due to an enzymatic inactivation, and (3) may be related to ammonium transport.

Notizen: Abstract With a glucose-limited chemostat culture of Bacillus stearothermophilus, increasing the incubation temperature progressively from 45°C to 63°C led to a progressive marked increase in the maintenance rates of glucose and oxygen consumption. Hence, at a fixed low dilution rate the yield values with respect to glucose and oxygen decreased substantially with increased temperature. However, the apparent Y glucose max and $$Y_{{\text{O}}_2 }^{\max } $$ values did not decrease but actually increased with temperature, being highest at 63°C (i.e., close to the maximum growth temperature). With glucose-sufficient cultures growing at a fixed low dilution rate (0.2 h−1) and at their optimum temperature (55°C), glucose and oxygen consumption rates invariably were higher than that of a corresponding glucose-limited culture. Cation (K+ or Mg2+)-limited cultures expressed the highest metabolic rates and with the K+ limited culture this rate was found to be very markedly temperature dependent. As the temperature was increased from 45°C to 63°C the rate of glucose consumption increased 1.8-fold, and that of oxygen consumption by 3.7-fold. The culture pH value also exerted a noticeable effect on the metabolic rate of a glucose-limited culture, particularly at the extremes of pH tolerance (5.5 and 8.5, respectively). A K+-limited culture was less affected with respect to metabolic rate by the culture pH value though the steady state bacterial concentration, and thus the cellular K+ content, changed substantially. These results are discussed in relation to previous findings of the behaviour of this organism in batch culture, and to the behaviour of other thermophilic Bacillus species in chemostat culture.

Notizen: Abstract Germination responses ofMallotus japonicus (Thumb). Muell. Arg. seeds to temperature revealed a gap-detecting mechanism in the seed germination of the species. Among various constant and alternating temperatures examined in the range from 12–40°C, only very limited temperature regimes were found to be favourable for seed germination, specifically, alternating temperatures between 18–32°C and 28–40°C. A single several-hour higher-temperature (32–40°C) treatment could also induce the germination of seeds which had been imbibed for several days at a constant temperature in the range of 20–26°C, suggesting that there is a process requiring higher temperature among the overal germination processes. Seeds located at or near the surface of denuded soil would have a good chance of experiencing such a temperature change when several rainy days are followed by fine weather, while seeds beneath close vegetation would not. On the other hand, the pressence or absence of light or a simulated ‘canopy ligh’ had little effect on the germination. Therefore, it was concluded that the seeds ofM. japonicus have a ‘gapdetecting mechanism’ in the form of a higher-temperature requirement of a certain process involved in the overall germination processes.

Notizen: Abstract Temperature requirements for the breaking of seed dormancy and germination inPrimula sieboldii E. Morren and the annual surface-soil temperature regime in one of its natural habitats were investigated in order to clarify the germination responses determining the seedling emergence seasonality of the species. In a grassland nature reserve in an abandoned flood plain of the Arakawa River, natural seedling emergence of the species was shown to be restricted to mid- to late-spring before the closure of seasonal vegetational gaps, when the daily mean soil surface temperature reached about 15°C, accompanied by large daily fluctuations of about 10°C. Mature seeds collected in late June were never able to germinate at any constant temperature in the range of 8–40°C unless they had been previously subjected to moist-chilling treatment. The proportion of seeds which were released from dormancy increased with increasing duration of the moist-chilling treatment at 2°C, 70–85% of seeds becoming germinable at 16–28°C after 12 weeks of pretreatment at 2°C. The thermal time required for the germination of the thus-pretreated seed population was 905–1690 Kh with a base temperature of around 5°C. Fluctuating temperatures between 24°C and 16 or 12°C had a remarkable dormancy-breaking effect, inducing considerably quick germination in most of the seeds previously subjected to 2°C moist-chilling for 8 weeks.

Notizen: Summary Short-term indirect selection in Drosophila melanogaster for heat-sensitivity and heat resistance resulted in two strains, one heat sensitive and another heat resistant, and correlated responses were found for the rate of heat shock protein synthesis, behavioral patterns (asymmetrical sexual isolation) and fitness components (fecundity, fertility, viability, developmental time), as well as for several enzyme activities (MDH, G-6-PDH, ADH, ACHE). These responses associated with temperature selection may reflect the effects of differential inbreeding depression caused by homozygosity of temperature sensitive mutations with different pleiotropic effects. Selection even of a very short duration can induce significant adaptive and evolutionary changes.

Notizen: Summary The flowering behaviour of 17 Pisum mutants and 20 recombinants was studied under three different temperatures using long-day phytotron conditions. A constant low temperature of 12.5 ° C led to a strong delay in flowering in all the genotypes tested but distinct relative differences could be found between them. Relative differences were also present with regard to speed of ontogenetic development under a permanent high temperature of 25.5 °C or under an alternating change between low and high temperature. Under the low temperature, recombinants R 20D and R 20E, carrying gene efr for earliness, entered the flowering period more than 4 weeks later than the donor of efr, demonstrating thereby a negative influence of one of the other mutant genes on efr. The high temperature of 25 °C influenced the flowering behaviour of 4 fasciated genotypes negatively — in contrast to the other strains studied. The plants of recombinant R 405 produced only tiny flower buds under these conditions. None of the plants of recombinant R 142F flowered under either the constant low or high temperature — they need the change of low and higher temperature for normal flower formation. The experiments show that most of the genotypes tested react specifically to the three temperature conditions offered to them.

Notizen: Summary The frequency of seed formation has been determined from self-pollination in situ (by hand) and in vitro for Trifolium repens. Selfing in situ was measured over a period of 3 years in which plants were held either at 35 °C for 24 h post-pollination (1984 and 1985) or held at ambient temperatures (1986). Mean yield of self-seed per 100 florets was 2.8 in 1984, 5.2 in 1985 and 2.2 in 1986. This was based on over 15,000 selfings per year with seven varieties and a total of 166 genotypes. In general, seed set following self-pollination was low; 53% of all genotypes set less than one seed per 100 florets selfed. Selfing of 340 excised florets in vitro with six genotypes gave a mean of 30.6 seeds per 100 florets. Temperature treatments (post-pollination) had no significant effect on seed yield in vitro. Treatment of florets in vitro for 24 h post-pollination with 0.1% CO2 increased the yield of self seed with three genotypes but had no effect on a fourth genotype.

Notizen: Summary Methods were developed for transient gene expression in protoplasts of black spruce (Picea mariana) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana). Protoplasts were isolated from embryogenic suspension cultures of black spruce and from non-embryogenic suspensions of jack pine. Using electroporation, transient expression of the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene was assayed and shown to be affected by the cell line used, by voltage, temperature, and by the plasmid concentration and conformation. Increasing the plasmid DNA concentration (0–150μg ml−1) resulted in higher levels of transient CAT expression. In jack pine, linearized plasmid gave 2.5 times higher levels of CAT enzyme activity than circular. Optimal voltage varied for each cell line of the two species within the range 200–350 V cm−1 (960 μF). A heat shock treatment of protoplasts for 5 min at 45 °C resulted in enhanced CAT gene expression for both species.

Notizen: Summary Microtubular organelles formed during continuous exposure to high or low temperature were studied. Neither heat nor cold prevents formation of the microtubular skeleton in the oral parts of the ciliateDileptus. Elevated temperature causes the formation of short microtubular fibres, while the size of the oral structure is not diminished. This leads to failure in sculpturing of the cytostome. Heat-treatment may also alter the localization of the anchor site of fibres around the circumference of the basal bodies, and the orientation of the fibres. Cold-treatment evokes the formation of small mouthparts containing a lower number of organelles, although these are properly shaped and there are no deviations in the position or orientation of fibres. It seems that low temperature may suppress the rate of formation of microtubular organelles, while elevated temperature affects their patterning.

Notizen: Summary When temperatures of 32 °C or 8 °C were applied to regenerating cells ofDileptus, the cells often formed oral apparatus with wrongly orientated ciliary complexes (kinetids). Such kinetids point their fibres in different directions instead towards the centre of the oral field, and can be deeply embedded in the cytoplasm. Similar wrongly orientated kinetids were also found during early stages of normal stomatogenesis, and it was concluded that temperature treatment can prevent the patterning of kinetids. Since wrongly orientated kinetids lack structural connections with the surface of the oral field, it is proposed that patterning proceeds through interactions between growing microtubular kinetid fibres and some submembraneous material of the oral cortex. This interaction is sensitive to temperature treatment. The microtubular fibres of kinetids produced by heated or cooled cells contain almost the same number of microtubules as fibres of control cells. For particular fibres temperature treatments caused an increase in range of microtubule number, but the mean value remained almost the same. Thus the microtubule organizing centers of microtubular fibres can protect the size of their organelles against temperature fluctuations.

Notizen: Summary Ultrarapid cyrofixation procedures revealed the existence of ordered arrays of intramembrane particles on E fracture faces and corresponding ordered imprints on P faces in freeze-fractured plasma membrane of the green algaeChlamydobotrys stellata (Korschikoff). The structure of these arrays is very sensitive to cryofixation conditions and particularly to glutaraldehyde prefixation which leads to the formation of amorphous two-dimensional aggregates. The size of the individual ordered arrays and the ratio of ordered to total surface of the membrane increase with growth temperature from 15°C to 30°C with a corresponding decrease in cell generation time. Above 30°C the size of the individual ordered arrays decreases. At high, but sublethal temperature (above 37°C) the ordered arrays become smaller. In addition to the predominant two-dimensional oblique organization (a=12.0nm, b=12.6nm, γ=80°), square and tetragonal arrangements are also present. The cell wall is composed of many layers, one of which displays a “zipper-like structure” composed of periodic ridges 25 nm distant, sandwiched between two more or less fibrillar layers. The appearance and changes of the organization of ordered arrays are discussed in relation to their eventual physiological role during the life cycle of the cells and in particular to the formation of the cell wall and the median periodic leaflet.

Notizen: Abstract Presently a storm-surge barrier is under construction in the mouth of the Oosterschelde. After its completion tidal conditions in the estuary can be controlled. In order to indicate the limiting conditions for conceivable uses of the storm-surge barrier a number of the most prominent salt-marsh species were tested in their various life stages against immersion times of 2, 4 and 8 days. Most of the species were able to withstand an extended immersion fairly well, although some of them showed reduced growth during-and after immersion. No evident relation was found between the position of the species on the salt-marsh ecotone and their inundation tolerance. Only one taxon from the upper marsh, Festuca rubra ssp. litoralis, showed a total die-back after an 8 day summer inundation. Most of the species involved showed a decreasing immersion tolerance with increasing water temperatures. Limonium vulgare and Juncus gerardii, however, exhibited a significant growth increase after extended immersion, even at a temperature of the inundation water of 36°C. In contrast herewith flowers and flower buds started to decay after as little as a 2 day immersion. For Aster tripolium prolonged immersion reduced seed weight and germination capacity of the seeds. Germination and seed weight of Salicornia dolichostachya were not affected by prolonged immersion. It is concluded that prolonged summer inundations will cause an overall negative effect on the salt-marsh vegetation.

Notizen: Abstract This paper investigates, with predictive models, the utility of ecophysiological responses to climate as predictors of plant distribution. At the global scale responses to extreme minimum temperatures and to the hydrological budget effectively predict the distribution limits of the major vegetation types of the World. A minimum temperature of -15°C, for example, appears critical in controlling the poleward spread of vegetation that is dominated by evergreen broadleaved species; however, the presence or absence of more frost resistant species, such as those that are deciduous broadleaved, is not obviously explained in terms of extremes of climate. In such cases, predicting the competitive relationships between species is necessary and dependent on the climatic sensitivity of population dynamics.

Notizen: Abstract It is now known that cardiac atria play an important role in blood pressure and volume regulation. Mechanical distension of the atria results in the release of a potent diuretic and natriuretic agent or agents termed the atrial natriuretic factor (ANF). Several structurally related forms of ANF exist in man and it is thought that these represent precursory forms of a single optimally active molecule and/or the presence of more than one form of active ANF. The chemical structure of ANF between different mammalian species is similar. ANF receptors have been identified in kidney, brain, vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells, tracheal and bronchial smooth muscle and the adrenal glands of many mammalian species, including man. This would suggest that ANF influences blood pressure and volume homoeostasis by affecting any one of a number of biochemical or physiological mechanisms via different target tissues. ANF is now considered a potentially valuable therapeutic agent for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. Synthesis of potent receptor antagonists could be extremely useful in the treatment of various clinical situations which are produced or complicated by endogenously produced ANF, such as chronic orthostatic hypotension.

Notizen: Summary In Antirrhinum majus the transposable element Tam3 has been described at two unlinked loci pallida and nivea, both of which are required for the production of anthocyanin pigment in flowers. In each case the element is inserted in the promoter region and gives a variegated phenotype. We show that the rate of Tam3 excision at both loci is greatly affected by temperature, being approximately 1000-fold higher at 15°C compared with 25°C. Tam3 is also controlled by an unlinked gene Stabiliser, which considerably reduces excision rate. We show that the high degree of sensitivity to temperature and Stabiliser is an intrinsic property of Tam3 which is not shared by an unrelated element, Tam1. The Tam3 insertion at nivea gives rise to a series of alleles which confer reduced pigmentation, novel spatial patterns and changed instability. These are probably a result of imprecise excision and rearrangements of the Tam3 element.

Notizen: Summary Both flooding and low temperature reduced height and stem diameter growth; leaf initiation; growth of leaves, stems, and roots; and lowered root-shoot ratios of 112-dayoldBetula platyphylla var.japonica seedlings. Flooding also induced leaf scorching and abscission. Growth was reduced much more by flooding than by low temperature. Interactive effects of flooding and temperature were shown on height growth, leaf initiation and expansion, and dry weight increment of leaves, stems and roots. The amount of growth reduction by flooding and low temperature was greater when based on analysis of dry weight increment of leaves, stems, and roots, than on their relative growth rates. The greater reduction of growth by flooding than by low temperature was associated with fewer and smaller leaves, more leaf injury, more stomatal closure, and greater decay of roots in flooded plants. Flooding and low temperature appeared to reduce growth by somewhat different physiological mechanisms.

Notizen: Summary Effects of temperature and flooded-drained soil conditions on 0.01M CaCl2 extractable phosphorus (soluble P) were investigated in four soils over the period of 42 days after fertilizer-P application. These soils show severe induced P deficiency problem in crops following flooded rice culture. The effects of temperature on the reaction rate constants were determined and activation energy was calculated. Increasing soil temperature as well as prior flooding of soil decreased soluble P concentration but the effect of the latter was dominant. The decrease in soluble P concentration in these soils with time followed a first order kinetics and the rate constant (K1) increased as the temperature increased from 10°C to 30°C. The activation energy (Ea) for the kinetics of soluble P concentration in soil, as affected by temperature, was found to be 8.9 and 34.5 KJ mol−1 for Meyers and Willows clay, respectively, over the temperature range studied.

Notizen: Synopsis The sea trout,Salmo trutta, from the Vardnes River generally stays in freshwater during winter. The results from 11 years of tagging experiments showed that the mean annual duration of the feeding migration in the sea was 68 ± 21 days (yearly means ranging between 54 and 88 days). A pronounced variation was found with size, sex and time of migration of the fish and between the different years. The males stayed for a shorter time in the sea (mean 66 days) than the females (mean 69 days) and they usually descended later and ascended earlier. Those fish that descended first stayed for the longest period in the sea. The mean annual duration of stay in the sea for first and second time migrants to the sea was positively correlated with the mean sea temperature in May (r2 〉 0.5). A positive correlation was also found between the annual duration of stay in the sea for the sea trout above 33 cm and the mean temperature in the river in July (r2 〉 0. 6). Prolonged mean yearly sea sojourn was generally correlated with higher sea temperatures. Water temperature-salinity effects are discussed.

Notizen: Synopsis The cichlid fish, Oreochromis mossambicus, was acclimated to 25°C for a 14 day period and then subjected to elevated temperatures of 30, 35, 40 and 45° C. Gill epithelia was progressively damaged from 30–40° C; gills from fish tested at 45°C showed less damage than those tested at 40°C. This is presumably due to the shorter exposure (survival) time at 45°C. Shrinkage of the secondary lamellae and the collapse of pillar cells supports the hypothesis that hypoxia at elevated temperatures is partially a function of changes in gill morphology.

Notizen: Synopsis Most fish species (and sometimes different life stages within a species) exhibit behavioral temperature selection. In nature, thermal gradients provide habitat structure to which fish orient. Apparently, fish have evolved to fit into ‘thermal niches’ to optimize physiological, ecological, and reproductive performance in their native habitats. However, man has perturbed many of these habitats to the point where previously advantageous thermal preference behavior may now be inappropriate. Thermal perturbations are the most obviously related examples of man's interference, but a fish's inherent thermal preference behavior can also magnify the biological effects of changes in dissolved oxygen, food supply, toxicants, and physical barriers. Environmental management should (1) consider thermal preference behavior when evaluating habitat suitability, (2) manage for needed temperature and thermal structure, and (3) give priority attention to minimizing degradation of preferred thermal habitat, especially when it is in short supply.

Notizen: Synopsis Oreochromis mossambicus, 92–170 mm total length, were acclimated to 25° C and rapidly subjected to cold stress (20, 15, 10 and 5°C). Morphological changes in gill epithelia and ultrastructure were examined using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Cold-stressed gills were unaffected morphologically at 20, 15, 10 and 5°C except for slight shrinkage; there was no evidence of cellular damage. This differs sharply with pronounced structural changes in gill morphology as reported previously for this species exposed to heat stress. Incapacitation of the neural system, inhibition of enzyme activity and osmoregulatory collapse are likely causes of death in cold-stressed O. mossambicus, a mode of death which contrasts with fishes exposed to heat shock.

Notizen: Summary The effects of temperature and soil moisture levels on the chemical composition of wheat forage grown in growth chambers were studied. In addition to the environmental variables, K and N fertilization effects were studied. In all the studies, increasing levels of K fertilization depressed the Mg and Ca concentration of the shoots. Nitrogen fertilization increased the Mg concentration but had no effect on the Ca concentration of the plants. N fertilization depressed the K concentration in the soil moisture experiment, but had no effect on K concentration in the temperature experiment. Increasing the temperature from 10 to 20°C did not affect the Mg and Ca concentration of the shoots, but the K concentration declined due to dilution effects caused by the greater yield at the higher temperature. In the soil moisture level experiment the K, Mg and Ca concentration in wheat tended to decline with soil moisture level due to dilution effects. Calculations showed that uptake of K was regulated primarily by diffusion of K from the soil to the plant root and that the uptake of Mg was regulated by the uptake process of the plant root and not by the nutrient transport process through the soil.

Notizen: Summary Using a root nodule cuvette and a continuous flow gas exchange system, we simultaneously measured the rates of carbon dioxide evolution, oxygen uptake and acetylene reduction by nodules ofAlnus rubra. This system allowed us to measure the respiration rates of single nodules and to determine the effects of oxygen concentration and temperature on the energy cost of nitrogen fixation. Energy cost was virtually unchanged (2.8–3.5 moles of carbon dioxide or oxygen per mole of ethylene) from 16 to 26°C (pO2=20 kPa) while respiration and nitrogenase activity were highly temperature dependent. At temperatures below 16°C, nitrogenase activity decreased more than did respiration and as a result, energy cost rose sharply. Acetylene reduction ceased below 8°C. Inhibition of nitrogenase activity at low temperatures was rapidly reversed upon return to higher temperatures. At high temperatures (above 30°C) nitrogenase activity declined irreversibly, while respiration and energy cost increased. Energy cost was nearly unchanged at oxygen partial pressures of 5 to 20 kPa (temperature of 20°C). Respiration and nitrogenase activity were strongly correlated with oxygen tension. Below 5 kPa, acetylene reduction and oxygen uptake decreased sharply while production of carbon dioxide increased, indicating fermentation. Fermentation alone was unable to support nitrogenase activity. Acetylene reduction was independent of oxygen concentration from 15 to 30 kPa. Nitrogenase activity decreased and energy cost rose above 30 kPa until nearly complete inactivation of nitrogenase at 70–80 kPa. Activity declined gradually, such that acetylene reduction at a constant oxygen concentration was stable, but showed further inactivation when oxygen concentration was once again increased. Alder nodules appear to consist of a large number of compartments that differ in the degree to which nitrogenase is protected from excess oxygen.

Notizen: Summary Ten-week-oldSophora japonica seedlings were grown for 10 weeks at 17, 22, or 27°C and then exposed to 0 or 1.0 μℓ/SO2 for 48 hours. The seedlings were subsequently grown at 22°C and harvested 12 weeks later. Effects of preconditioning temperature and SO2 on leaf formation, seedling height and stem diameter, as well as dry weight increment and relative growth rates of leaves, stems, and roots were studied. The preconditioning temperature regime influenced growth and subsequently affected SO2 uptake and growth. However, the responses of seedlings to temperature and SO2 varied with the growth parameter measured. The need for greater standardization of methods and criteria for assessing pollution tolerance of plants is emphasized.

Amylase-producing bacterial strains associated with cassava fermentation were isolated and identified asBacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis andBacillus cereus. The pH optima for the partially purified enzymes of these organisms were 7.0, 5.5 and 7.5, whilst their temperature optima were 30, 37 and 80°C. There was no significant difference in amylase activities when starch, dextrin, amylopectin, glucose and maltose were used as growth substrates.

Notizen: Abstract A 40-day culture experiment of water hyacinth was made in 4 different water temperatures, 15, 20, 25 and 30°C, which were combined with 4 levels of concentration of culture solution, 1/3, 1, 3 and 9-fold of the standard solution containing 28 ppm of totalN and 7.7 ppm of totalP. The optimum condition for obtaining the maximum plant growth shifted from 30°C: 3-fold condition in the early stage to 20–25°C: 3-fold condition in the later stages of the experiment. The relation between the fresh weight biomass per 100-l tank,w, and the concentration of culture solution,f, was expressed successfully by a reciprocal equation,1/w=A F/f+A F ′f/(1-f/C F)+B F, in whichA f,A f′, andB f are time dependent coefficients andC f is the upper limit of the concentration to permit plant growth which can change with time. The relation betweenw and water temperature,T, was expressed by another reciprocal equation,1/w=A T/e aT+A T′ebT+B T, in whicha andb are constants andAt At′ andB t are time dependent coefficients. The latter formulation shows that the temperature can be breated as an exponential factor, and it suggests the possibility of the growth coefficient of the logistic growth equation, ψ, being affected by temperature.

Notizen: Summary The effects of temperature and prior flooding of soil on P sorption were examined in 2 soils having a rice-based cropping system and showing an induced P deficiency problem in flooded rice-uplant crop rotations. The P sorption capacity of soil increased with increasing temperature as well as with prior flooding, the effects of the latter were, howerver, dominant. The bonding energy of sorption, calculated from the Langmuir isotherm, also increased with both temperature and prior flooding of soils, indicate that the effects of chemical changes associated with alternative anoxic and oxidized soil conditions are more significant in the P reversion process. The apparent heat of sorption reaction, calculated with the Freundlich isotherm and Van't Hoff's equation also increased due to prior flooding of soil.

Increasing root temperatures of Lee soybean from 20 to 35°C increased the competitiveness of 76 and 94 relative to 6 and 110 for all inoculum ratios such that at 30 and 35°C symptoms ofRhizobium-induced chlorosis appeared. Tolerance to elevated temperatures was exhibited by 76 and 110, but not 94 and 6 in broth and soil which suggested that increased competitiveness of 76 and 94 at high soil temperatures was not dependent upon growth at elevated temperatures. Nodulation and vegetative growth of Lee soybeans were at a minimum at 20°C and optimum at 30°C. Differences in competitiveness of 6 to previous studies indicated the need to standardize temperatures of assays. Differences in growth responses of 76 and 94 to temperature from a previous study suggested a confounding effect on different carbon sources in growth media.

Notizen: Summary Experiments were done to test whether N fixation is more sensitive to high soil temperatures in common bean than in cowpea or soybean. Greenhouse experiments compared nodulation, nitrogenase activity, growth and nitrogen accumulation of several host/strain combinations of common bean with the other grain legumes and with N-fertilization, at various root temperatures. Field experiments compared relative N-accumulation (in symbiotic relative to N-fertilized plants) of common bean with cowpea under different soil thermal regimes. N-fertilized beans were unaffected by the higher temperatures, but nitrogen accumulation by symbiotic beans was always more sensitive to high root temperatures (33°C, 33/28°C, 34/28°C compared with 28°C) than were cowpea and soybean symbiosis. Healthy bean nodules that had developed at low temperatures functioned normally in acetylene reduction tests done at 35°C. High temperatures caused little or no suppression of nodule number. However, bean nodules produced at high temperatures were small and had low specific activity. ForP. vulgaris some tolerance to high temperature was observed among rhizobium strains (e.g., CIAT 899 was tolerant) but not among host cultivars. Heat tolerance ofP. acutifolius andP. lunatus symbioses was similar to that of cowpea and soybean. In the field, high surface soil temperatures did not reduce N accumulation in symbiotic beans more than in cowpea, probably because of compensatory nodulation in the deeper and cooler parts of the soil.

Notizen: Summary Effects of temperature and seedling age on survival of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) seedlings grown on sand-wheat wholemeal cultures of different isolates ofFusarium spp. (9 isolates),Pythium spp. (9 isolates), andChaetomium spp. (1 isolate) are reported. Some isolates were virulent over the whole range of temperatures tested (7.5–27.5°C). The virulence of others depended on temperature. Most isolates were less virulent at intermediate temperatures (12.5–22.5°C) than at higher or lower temperatures. At 25°C ryegrass seedlings were susceptible to fungal attack for only a limited period after germination commenced. This period differed for different fungi, but for most isolates tested, seedlings were resistant after 2–3 days.

Notizen: Synopsis In order to investigate a possible relationship between temperature and fish length growth in the Barents Sea capelin stock, estimates of environmental temperature in the feeding season were compared to estimates of length growth during the same season. The mean temperature of the capelin feeding area was calculated by averaging the temperatures in September for the depth interval 10–200 m in statistical rectangles. The estimates of capelin growth were obtained for the same rectangles using backcalculation of length from otoliths. Correlation coefficients for the relationship between water temperature and growth were 0.70 and 0.53 for two- and three-year-olds, respectively, when all the material was considered, and between 0.85 and 0.91 for within-year data. In addition, a close correspondence between feeding area and growth rates was found.

Notizen: Summary Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded in ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) arousing from hibernation. Squirrels implanted with recording screws to record ABRs, and a thermistor to record brain temperature, were placed in a cold room at 9 °C on a 2L:22D light-dark cycle. Hibernating animals were moved from the cold room and ABRs recorded during arousal. The responses showed a gradual development of all brainstem peaks. At low temperatures there were very long latencies to the peaks. The amplitudes of the peaks increased (with fluctuations) as brain temperature increased. The data indicate that neural generators on the brainstem auditory pathway were all activated early in arousal. These results do not support the hypothesis that successive peaks appear and grow in amplitude only after previous peaks are fully developed.

Notizen: Summary The temperature at the centre, the periphery and the entrance of a honey bee colony (Apis mellifera carnica) was continuously determined during the summer season and the broodless time in winter. During the summer season the temperature in the brood nest averages 35.5°C with brief excursions up to 37.0°C and down to 33.8°C. Increasing environmental temperatures resulted in linear increases in the temperature of the hive entrance, its periphery and its centre. The temperature in the centre of an overwintering cluster is maintained at an average value of 21.3°C (min 12.0°C, max 33.5°C). With rising ambient temperatures the central temperature of a winter cluster drops whereas the peripheral temperature increases slightly. With decreasing external temperatures the peripheral temperature is lowered by a small amount while the cluster's centre temperature is raised. Linear relationships are observed between the central and the ambient temperature and between the central temperature and the temperature difference of the peripheral and the ambient temperatures. The slopes point to two minimum threshold values for the central (15°C) and the peripheral temperature (5°C) which should not be transgressed in an overwintering cluster. Microcalorimetric determinations of the heat production were performed on the three castes of the honey bee: workers, drones and queens of different ages. Among these groups single adult workers showed the highest heat production rates (209 mW·g−1) with only neglectible fluctuations in the heat production rate. Juvenile workers exhibited a mean heat production rate of 142 mW·g−1. The rate of heat production of adult workers is strongly dependent upon the number of bees together in a group. With more than 10 individuals weight-specific heat dissipation remains constant with increasing group sizes at a level approximately 1/17 that of an isolated bee. Differences are seen between the rates of virgin (117 mW·g−1) and laying (102 mW·g−1) queens. Laying queens showed less thermal fluctuations than virgin queens. High fluctuations in heat production rates are observed for drones. In both groups (fertile, juvenile) phases of high and extremely low activity succeed one another. The heat production of juvenile drones was 68 mW·g−1, that of fertile drones 184 mW·g−1 due to stronger locomotory activities.

Notizen: Summary Oxygen consumption rates of the lizardsPtyodactylus hasselquistii (adult and subadults) andBunopus tuberculatus (adult) were determined in relation to ambient temperatures ranging from 10 to 35°C using a double-chamber, volumetric closed system. The metabolic rate-temperature curves for both species were triphasic and similar in shape, but O2 consumption differed between species. The low thermal dependence at temperatures between 15 and 25°C, common to both species, was correlated with the lizards' dual mode of thermoregulatory activity and ecology.

Notizen: Abstract The bottom food search (BFS) feeding behavior in cod (Gadus morhua L.), has been used in a bioassay for chemical isolation of the feeding stimulant substances present in shrimp (Pandalus borealis). An aqueous methanol extract of ground shrimp was separated into acidic, neutral, and amphoteric/basic fractions by ion-exchange chromatography and into single components by preparative high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Of the isolated single components, the amino acid glycine was most potent, followed by alanine. Two unidentified substances were also highly potent. There was a synergistic effect between glycine, alanine, proline, and arginine. These four amino acids were more potent than the total amino acid pool found in the shrimp extract, indicating that there may be amino acids in this pool having an antagonistic effect.

Beschreibung: This study was conducted to determine physico-chemical characteristics of water and their spatial and temporal fluctuations in the Mazandaran coastal of Caspian Sea in 6 months, four seasons at 4 transects (Tonekabon, Nowshahr, Babolsar, Amirabad) during 2012-2013. 72 samples were collected at surface layer of water in 5, 15 and 30m depths. Then the sampls analyzed based on standard methods. Results showed that the mean of water and air temperature were 19.46±0.85 and 20.25±0.78 ◦C, respectively. Minimum and maximum of water temperature were recorded in winter (7.00) and summer time (28.10). Mean of salinity was 12.35±0.13 ppt. The maximum salinity was recorded in summer and minimum in winter in all transects. Mean of transparency (SD) in the present study was 2.63±0.18m. The mean of pH was observed 8.51±0.02 which was higher than the pervious sampling periods. The mean of DO was observed 6.00±0.07 ml/l during sampling period. Annual concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN= NH4 +, NO2-, NO3-) has a fairly wide variation in diferents months and transects. Percentage of nitrogen components out of DIN were varied 6-53, 0.14-26.0 and 37.0-94.0 respectively. In this study, percentage of DIN was lower than 15% and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was higher than 80%. Mean of annual dissolved inorganic phosphorous (DIP) and organic phosphorous were 0.58± 0.04 and 0.48± 0.02 µM, respectively. DIP and DOP percentages recorded 54 and 46 respectively. Mean annual of dissolved silicon (DSi) obtained 9.5± 0.2 µM. Based on the results, the system was in phosphorus limitation during spring and summer but it shifted to nitrogen limitation in autuman and winter. Phytoplankton development was not limited by DSi at any seasons.

Beschreibung: Persian Gulf waters (areas of Hormuzgan province) in order to determine the best location for installation of Artificial reefs were studied seasonally from December 2006 to March 2007. Distribution of funa and flora and estimation of deposit depth by SCUBA diving method, density and frequency of macrobenthose communities, frequency of ichthyoplankton communities, determination of organic carbon (OC) and Grain size and measurement of water physical factors including salinity, saturation oxygen, dissolved oxygen, temperature, chlorophyll a, in transect and subtransect was studied for recognizing the best placement to installation of artificial reefs. All areas of Shipping, military areas, around of Islands, natural habitats and entrance to jetty were introduced for excluding areas. South of Qeshm Island (transects of Bahman jetty, Bandar Masen and Bandar Salakh) are catching area for small pelagic (sardine and anchovy fishes), therefore in these areas installation of artificial reefs have confined with this restriction. Also entrance to Bahman jetty, sea plant habitats (sea grass and algae) in transects of Bahman jetty and Bandar Masen were considered as restricted areas. In this area, suitable areas for installation of artificial reefs was determined based on distribution of Ichthyoplankton societies for every transect, for macrobenthose enrichment Bahman jetty transect was calculated middle, but transects of Bandar Masen, Hengam island and Bandar Salakh was done good indicator. The deposition depth in transects of Bandar Masen and Hengam island was determined as good factor but this index was known as average factor for transects of Bahman jetty and Bandar Masen. Also, two another indicators, primary production and bottom sturdiness, were calculated as middle factor for Bahman jetty transect, but these indicators were known as good factors for other transects in this area (Bandar Masen, Hengam island and Bandar Salakh). The results of these indicators in transects of Bandar Kong and Bandar Bostaneh in Bandar Lengeh area was indicated that T. O. C and bottom sturdiness indices had no significant difference (p〉0. 05) and the whole of these transects had average priority. Bottom sturdiness, primary productions and macrobenthose communities indices had difference in Bandar Lengeh area (p〈0. 05) and these indices had average priority in Bandar Kong transect and had good priority in transects of Bandar Bostaneh and Bandar Hasineh. Ichthyoplankton community had average priority for Bandar Bostaneh transect, and had good priority for transects of Bandar Kong and Bandar Hasineh. The good priority has obtained for transects of Bandar Charak, Bandar Gorzeh and Bandar Chiroeyah. Also Macrobenthose community, primary production, water physical factors and bottom sturdiness were known as good, good, average and weakness priority respectively for transects of Bandar Charak, Bandar Gorzeh, but primary production, bottom sturdiness, water physical factors and macrobenthose community were resulted as average, good, good and average priority respectively for Bandar Chiroeyah transect . T. O. C index was determined as average priority for transects of Bandar Gorzeh and Bandar Chiroeyah and good priority for Bandar Charak transect. Finally, excluded areas maps, suitability areas maps and feasibility areas maps were drawn by Arc GIS software. In this survey, layers between 10 to 20 meters depth were recognized as the best position for installation of artificial reefs.

Beschreibung: In order to domesticate Litopenaeus vannamei as a solution to single species shrimp aquaculture of Penaeus indicus and to reduce risk of shrimp culture in emergency cases, this study was carried out. Initially the postlarvae reared from imported L. vannamei were cultured. After culture season the adult shrimps were transported to greenhouse ponds for wintering. It is then relocated to hatchery saloon. After eye stalk ablation and maturation the female brood stocks were introduced to matured male for copulation at ponds. During the study period, male and female shrimps attained full maturation at end – April by temperature over 25ºC, the copulation process was started significantly. Finally of the 12 instances of copulation, one instance resulted nauplii production. The best maturation was observed at 28 ֯C ±1 and salinity30 to 33PPT and pH of 8 to 8.3 Fresh sea worms and squid showed the highest effect on fecundity in brood stocks. Besides, the spring season was obtained to be the best period for brood stock production in Bushehr province.

Beschreibung: Following to introduce Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) into Iran aquaculture industries by fisheries organization its postlarvae were successfully reared in ponds in Bushehr and Choebdeh in Khuzestan. Due to activity of Shrimp site and importance of input and output water quality, this study was done in 11 stations including: two stations in Bahmanshir river, two station in C4 and C5 irrigation canals, six staions in active farms along C4 cannel (Yonesi, Mosavei and Salman Zadeh), and C5 cannel (Mohamadi, Khairi and Ashraf Por) and one staion in output draing were selected. Sampling were carried out from May2009 befor beginning stocking to harvest time in October 2009. Physico- chemical parameters and plankton sampled biweekly and benthic animals and heavy metals were sampled monthly. Some parameters such as pH and temperature by using portable multy parameters and others. Analyzed with standard methods. Heavy metals were measured by plarography method (797 Vamtro). Plankton and benthos samples were studied only in Bahmanshir station. According to results the maximum values for DO (11.1 ppm) PO4 (1.86 ppm) NO3 (8.4 ppm) and TSS (4992 ppm), pH (8.4) NO2 (0.18 ppm) BOD5 (9.06 ppm) were measured. In comparison to aquaculture water quality standards except for TSS in river stations others are located in allowable range. We didn’t observed any main changes in water quality from river to output drainage. The results of biotic parameters in river stations showed that diatoms were the most group of phytoplanktons. Zooplankton groups were Copepods, Rotifera and Protozoa. Tintinids and Nematoda larvae were the most abundant zooplankton. Benthic animals were included nine crustacean species and two annelid species. Isopods with 52% were the most and ant group.

Beschreibung: The brine shrimp Artemia consists of a number of bisexual species and a large number of parthenogenetic forms, which collectively, inhabiting a wide range of hypersaline habitats. This research was carried out in order to study the genetic differentiation of Artemia urmiana and two parthenogenetic populations originated from surrounding lagoons of the Lake Urmia (Fesendoz, Saray village) and also to find the phylogenetic relationships of some Iranian Artemia (Qom, Arak, Golestan, and Shiraz) with a comparison to some foreign Artemia species (A. sinica, A. franciscana, A. parthenogenetica (Russia and Turkmenistan) using a molecular technique (PCRRAPD`s). Of a total number of 56 random primers (10 bp) survey, 29 and 26 oligonucleotides showed polymorphic patterns with highly reproducible bands in Artemia urmiana groups and Iranian Artemia groups. The highest percentage of polymorphic loci were in Artemia urmiana (P= 78.89 %) and in comparison with the other parthenogenetic forms, in parthenogenetic Artemia from Saray village (P= 59.8 %). The highest values of Shannon index were estimated in Artemia urmiana (I= 0.41), and in comparison with other parthenogenetic forms, in parthenogenetic Artemia from Saray village (I= 0.3). Analysis of molecular variance indicated that most variation were within populations (A. urmiana with parthenogenetic forms, FST= 0.35) and among populations (Iranian Artemia with foreign species, FST= 0.76). Genetic pattern was not in accordance to geographical distribution, which indicated the wide range of Artemia samples at different regions in Iran. UPGMA showed two distinct clusters in group I including A. urmiana with two parthenogenetic forms and four clusters in group II including Iranian Artemia with some foreign species. It is understood that two parthenogenetic populations (Fesendoz and Saray village) had close genetic relationship together with high value of heterozygosity in parthenogenetic Artemia from Saray village. Iranian Artemia (Qom, Arak, and Golestan) indicated close genetic relationships with A. parthenogenetica (Russia and Turkmenistan) with low values of heterozygosity. A sister group was generated including Shiraz and USA Artemia samples which attests a possible contamination of local water with A. franciscana. FST value revealed high genetic structuring at all studied groups. Besides, it is suggested that gene flow was not strong enough to prevent substantial genetic differentiation. Result could lead to a management programmes to use suitable Artemia strains with high genetic diversity, for culturing and establishment of gene bank of Artemia stocks in Lake Urmia.

Beschreibung: This study investigates the distribution of three trace elements (Cd, Cu and Zn) in tissues (exoskeleton, abdominal muscle and hepatopancreas) of two shrimp species (Penaeus merguiensis and Penaeus semisulcatus). Special emphasis in this study was placed on evaluating the effects of storage conditions on redistribution of the elements and moreover, the potential roles of metallothionein in tissue redistribution. The specimens were collected from the northern part of Persian Gulf during August 2001 and September 2002. The concentrations of metals in the tissues were measured using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-AES) and an ICP-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Metallothionein levels were determined using Differential Pulse Polarography. Results show a similar hierarchy for Cd and Cu concentrations among different tissues as follows: hepatopancreas〉 exoskeleton〉 muscle; and for Zn, the hepatopancreas again contained the highest levels, though there were not any significant differences in Zn concentrations between muscle and exoskeleton. Significant differences were found between the species in the case of Cd and Zn concentrations. Cd and Zn levels in P. semisulcatus were markedly higher than in P. merguiensis. In general, there were highly significant differences among the storage conditions from accumulation the selected trace elements and metallothionein in both species point of view, but in most cases no significant differences could be observed among the fresh, refrigerated and frozen specimens of P. semisulcatus. In regards to Zn and Cu accumulation in edible (muscle) tissues of P. merguiensis, optimum conditions for frozen storage is -30ºC as ice frozen, and in terms of short term storage, one day refrigeration is recommended. The redistribution of Zn and Cu during the storage period can be attributed to the role of metallothionein in their transport from organ(s) to muscle during storage. The variations in pH values measured in the muscle of P. merguiensis in different storage conditions showed a similar trend with metallothionein, Zn and Cu. In contrast it appears that cadmium is transported from muscle to the other tissues. Exoskeleton is probably one of the recipient tissues of cadmium. The inter-elemental relationships were assessed for each species, separately. A significant positive relationship was observed between the concentrations of Zn and metallothionein in P. semisulcatus, whereas in P. merguiensis, Cd concentrations decreased significantly with increasing metallothionein. Highly significant differences between the sexes in Cu and Zn contents could be detected. Highly significant size-related differences were found in the levels of Cd, Cu and metallothionein in the selected tissues of the shrimp species. Comparison between the mean concentrations of the elements in muscle tissue and existing guidelines indicate that in nearly all cases the concentrations were well below permissible levels for human consumption. The only exception was observed regarding mean values of Cd, which was somewhat greater than some of the recommended levels.

Beschreibung: Protecting coastal aquaculture systems as a habitat for aquatic systems is one of the serious concerns of the world. In the present study, spatial and temporal variations of Some physicochemical parameters, nutrient concentration and water quality In some estuaries of East and West of Hormozgan province were investigated from March 2015 to February 2016.Data analysis was performed using multivariate statistical methods (such as: CA,DA and PCA Analysis) and Eutrophication and water quality index using multivariable indices. The average annual variation of various parameters studied in West Azarbaijan province of Hormozgan is as follows:water temperature (18.1-34.6Co ), Salinity (35-45.6 ppt), Dissolved Oxygen (4.6-7.4 mg.l), pH (8.01-8.4), Nitrate (32.5- 403.5µmo.l), Nitrite (3.6-50.7 µmo.l), Total Ammonia (9.8-311.2 µmo.l), phosphate (22-569.1.6 µmo.l), and chlorophyll-a is equal to(0.46-4.04 mg.m3 ), respectively. Also, the mean annual variation of the various parameters studied in the eastern province of Hormozgan has been as follows: water temperature (18.1-34.6Co ), Salinity (35-45.6 ppt), Dissolved Oxygen (4.6-7.4 mg.l), pH (8.01-8.4), Nitrate (32.5-403.5µmo.l), Nitrite (3.6- 50.7 µmo.l), Total Ammonia (9.8-311.2 µmo.l), phosphate (22-569.1.6 µmo.l), and chlorophyll-a is equal to(0.46-4.04 mg.m3 ), respectively. One-Way Analysis of Variance test showed that the significant for some differences physicochemical parameters varied seasonally.Discriminant analysis, water quality conditions in terms of location classified into three groups. The analysis of PCA showed that the amount of nitrate and total ammonia in the tiba and phosphate in Laft and Kgamir Stricks with two sources (domestic and agricultural waste) and natural sources, can be considered as the main factors affecting the intensity of Eutrofication. The range of trophic Trix and TI eutrophication index in the studied areas were 4.3-6.1 and 3.5-4.2 respectively.According to on the indicators of and TI index, trophic status was classified into mesotrophic(in laft and khamir areas), Oligo-Mezotrophic(Yekshoveh area) and mezo- eutrophic respectively. Also Based on Trix index, the Water quality status was from bad condition in tiab area and good condition in laft, khamir and yekshoveh areas respectively. The determination of trophic conditions with a single-variable method based on chlorophyll a and Total inorganic Dissolved materials(DIN) showed a Very good agreement with multivariate trophic indices. The range of changes in some of the parameters studied in this study was more than the reported limit for the conservation of aquatic life in coastal areas.

Beschreibung: Barcodes are short segments of DNA that can be used to uniquely identify an unknown specimen to species, particularly when diagnostic morphological features are absent. These sequences could offer a new forensic tool in plant and animal conservation especially for endangered species. Ideally, barcodes could be used to positively identify illegally obtained material even in cases where diagnostic features have been purposefully removed or to release confiscated organisms into the proper breeding population. In the present study molecular data were used besides the morphological ones to introduce a specific barcode for six selected species of Shrimp. Based on the previous phylogenetics study, it has been proved that the mitochondrial COI gene in crustacean is a good discriminative marker at both inter- and intra-specific levels. In this regard, six species of shrimp (Fenoro penaeus indicus, Fenoro penaeus merguensis, penaeus semisulcatus, Metapenaeus affinis, Marsupenaeus japonicas, Fenoro penaeus penicillatus were collected from the Persian Gulf and Oman sea. After identification, the total DNA was extracted; COI gene was first amplified and then sequenced for each species. Finally the collected data were analyzed with the specific phylogenetic software. Molecular analysis revealed some degree of interpopulation differences but six good species were recognizable based on COI sequences. Also for population study molecular data of two species Penaeus semisulcatus and Metapenaeus affinis were analysed base on COI RFLP and 16SrRNA sequences respectively. The results would be helpful to protect shrimp species.

Beschreibung: The shrimp farming success in the future will greatly depend upon increasing supplies of healthy and high quality seed for stocking ponds. The limited and inconsistent availability of wild shrimp postlarvae together with an urgent need of establishing selective breeding programs, increased the interest in captive broods of penaeid. Many investigations have been carried out on several shrimp species world-wide. This study have been conducted on 2 shrimp groups since September (Mehr) to July (Tir) 1999 in Bandar-e-Imam southwest Iran. The wild group (SPB) prepared from Jask area and the pond group (POB) prepared from artificial ponds upon harvesting them as marketable size have been investigated. 2 groups were exposed to natural diets consisting of squid and artemia biomass in same conditions using 12 m3 concrete tanks. Stocking density was 2 piece/m2 (1F:1M). Half part of the pond bottom covered by fine sand to reduce the stress where the other part has been used for feeding. Daily ration given in 3 times by satiation method. Also reproductive performance of wild gravid brooders (WLB) were recorded as a control group. 2 examined groups well grown and around 50% of the SPM and around 30% of POB females successfully ripened a produced eggs and nauplii where almost all males of both groups were matured. Data showed fecundity is highly correlated to the TL and W of the brooders by positive trend. Considering the TL, W, Fecundity and nauplii production the WLB brooders are significantly (P=0.05) higher than 2 other groups, while the SPM broods are significantly (P=0.05) higher in hatchability. Meanwhile the survival rate from nauplii to postlarvae stage was around 30% for SMP brooders. On the other hand the growth parameters (TL, W) of the marketable size of the shrimps produced from SMP brooders were significantly (P=0.05) higher than those produced from WLB group. Since the fecundity is improvable by increasing the brood size thus the data suggest the sup.

Beschreibung: Protection authorities of plant and animal genetic resources and conservation of biodiversity as national assets by using biotechnology techniques is the most important objectives of genetic data information bank. Establishment of shrimp species genetic data bank, makes possibility of study multiple genes such as economic genes and since knowledge of genetic variation within and among populations and barcoding species of shrimp are very important for species conservation and with so little researches of Asia in the global studies of DNA barcoding and animal taxonomy in Iran, In this study, Iran shrimp genetic diversity and genetic data bank was done. DNA barcode is a short, standard well known sequence of cytochrome oxidase І gene. By using this DNA sequence can be realized that each animal, plant or fungus belongs to which species. Also prepare a bank of genetic data shrimp pathogens and maintenance of these strains are steps to advance future researches in the fields of pathogenesis mechanism of pathogens, diagnosis, treatment, Disease prevention, production diagnosis native kits and detection of emerging and reemerging diseases its origins. So in this plan samples were collected from imported cultured shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and and 6 Persian Gulf and Oman Sea shrimp species which classified based on traditional systematically as: Penaeus semisulcatus, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, Metapenaeus affinis, Parapenaeopsis Stylifera and Fenneropenaeus indicus. After examination of DNA barcode sequence, molecular and bioinformatics operations of each sequence in the Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), phylogenetic analysis of each sample was determined and similarity of each sample with NCBI and CBOL database was checked and the closest species to each sample were specified. According to the results different samples of L. vannamei, . banded P.semisulcatus, F. merguiensis and F. indicus have more than 97% similarity to the same species of other countries. non banded P.semisulcatus had 80.07% similarity to banded P.semisulcatus, M. affinis samples had 90.3% similarity to Metapenaeus ensis and Parap. Stylifera had 93.44% similarity to Parapenaeopsis coromandelica in the CBOL. This funding confirmed the need for further investigation and possible announcement of new species. By using ribotyping technique, native isolated pathogenic bacteria and fungi were identified and recorded in the gene bank database center. During sampling of shrimp and water of Specific Pathogen Free shrimp center, 40 bacterial strains were isolated, which 8 of them had the most frequency and identification based on 16S rDNA sequencing was performed. Bacteria identified are: Vibrio nigripulchritudo strain IS013(GenBank:KP843725) ،Vibrio brasiliensis strain IS014 (GenBank:KR186076) ،Vibrio rotiferianus strain IS015 (GenBank:KR186077) ،Vibrio azureus strain IS012 (GenBank:KJ018724.1) ،Vibrio owensii strain IS016 (GenBank:KR186078) ،Agarivorans gilvus strain IS017 (GenBank:KR186079) ،Vibrio brasiliensis IS018 (GenBank:KR186080) and Vibrio alginolyticus strain IS019 (GenBank:1817854), which were recorded in The World Bank genes. Beschreibung: This investigation conducted for evaluation Silo (Cylindrical) Fish Tanks as an applicable method for aquaculture of Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Current research was designed in two practical phases as accidental experiments through 3 treatments and repeats of which stocked by three Rainbow trout (375 gr) densities as 75, 100 and 125 fish/m3 in 9 silo fish tanks (2 m3). For better understandings of the silo performance method, concrete circular fish tanks (similar volume) considered as controls and stocked as similar fish densities as silo tanks. The duration of the first phase of experiment was 150 days. The second phase of the experiment was determined for evaluating two proposed silo type (Inlet and outlet in bottom side / Inlet from bottom and outlet in upper side). In this stage, proposed silos (stocked by fish of 294 gr weigh) tested for rearing trout for 30 days. Water supplied from two surface wells after some aeration operations. Stocked fish were fed by pellets made by Fish Feed Chineh Company (Ltd) in Iran. Feeding operation conducted according to the recognized manuals by consideration of water temperature, fish weight and biomass. Meanwhile, biometry operation conducted in 10 days intervals while fish were anaesthetized. In addition, water quality was determined by daily measurements. According to the results of the first phase of experiment, there were significant variations on Growth rate, survival rate, FCR, FCE and SGR through the cultured organisms in silo tanks compared to the circular tanks. Meanwhile, according the results of an economic study on this survey, the fish culture in silo tanks showed significant economical and profitable in compare to controls. In additions, the second phase of experiment showed better aeration conditions in silo tanks when inlet water supply from bottom side and outlet located in upper side. Because of the fine distribution of fish in silo tanks and more usage of depth by this method, fish culture would be an applicable and profitable technique in narrow lands and slopes through the mountains area. The maximum stocking rate recorded more than 100 Kg fish/m3 in silo tanks.

Beschreibung: Mnemiopsis leidyi is one the species of comb-jelly. It belongs to the Ctenophore phylum and lobate order. Mnemiopsis leidyi first appear in the Black Sea in 1980s and reached to the biomass levels up to 1.5-2 kg m2 in the summer of 1989. This species is food rival of pelagic fish. It has been reported that the ctenophore caused the dramatic decrease of zooplankton and pelagic fish stock in the Black Sea. In this study, sampling on Mnemiopsis leidyi, zooplankton and phytoplankton started from July to December 2002 from a total of 2 stations located Anzali and Khazarabad by METU net in the Iranian Coasts of the Caspian Sea. Experimental studies on Mnemiopsis have indicated that Mnemiopsis begins to produce eggs in the Caspian Sea, when it reaches length about 15 mm. Although eggs were obtained even from specimen with 12 mm length and weight of 0.5 g. The most abundant size of reproducing Mnemiopsis was 20-30 mm in the Caspian Sea. Average fecundity of M.leidyi in the Caspian Sea was 1174±741 eggs/day with maximum 2824 eggs/day for specimens with length group of 30-39 mm and the weight about 2.0-2.7 g. Percentage of hatched eggs was not high in experiments with M.leidyi the range from 9 to 92 % after 24 hours. The maximum produce egg of M.leidyi measured with mean 845±733 eggs/day in Salinity of 11 ppt and the minimum egg recorded with mean 2 eggs/day in salinity of 4 ppt. The results showed that the biomass of M.leidyi had some fluctuation in different months and its maximum biomass was recorded in August with a figure of 384±156 g.m2 and the minimum biomass was observed in December with a figure of 87±46 g.m2. The gut contents of Mnemiopsis leidyi showed a wide variety of prey including 84 % of zooplanktons and 16% of Phytoplanktons. The most abundance of intaked foods was Acartia (belong to Copepoda) with 34 % and the least was podon polyphemoides (belongs to Cladocera) with 0.74 %. Also 3.0 % of fish eggs and 4.2 % of Lamllibrachia were found among stomach contents. The young specimen (5〈 mm) consumed more zooplanktons and phytoplanktons comparing to adult ones. Copepoda was dominant zooplankton in the Iranian coasts of the Caspian Sea. Fecundity of Mnemiopsis showed correlation to the length and wet weight in the Caspian Sea and reproduction of M.leidyi was done small size in comparing with other area in the Caspian Sea. Salinity, water temperature and food availability is the most important factor in producing eggs in M.leidyi. It seems, that Mnemiopsis leidyi feeding has been one of the most important factor in declining zooplankton populations and Clupeonella stocks.

Beschreibung: The effects of aquaculture industry on the environment were evaluated by studying the water quality of Bushehr costal water during culture season 2005 and 2006. The variations of selected parameters such as total phosphorus, ammonia, chlorophyll a, pH, salinity and... Were monitored in effluent canal, influent canal and open sea in Helleh and Mond regions as monthly. Following occurrence of White Spot Disease (W.S.D) in the shrimp ponds of Bushehr province, shrimp culture suspended and entrance of effluent waters completely were blocked since August 2005, despite the absence of aquaculture sewage evaluation of environment and sampling were continued. During releasing of sewage of shrimp ponds to the coastal waters of Bushehr in Jun 2005, the average amount of ammonia in Helleh and Mond were obtained to be 0.161 mg/l and 0.194 mg/l, however the average amount of total phosphorus in Helleh and Mond regions were 0.149 mg/l and 0.043 mg/l, respectively. Although effluent water suspension, amount of ammonia and total phosphorus were increased in both region especially in June 2006. Comparing present data in Jun 2005 and recorded data from culture period 1997-2003 with permitable range of municipal and aquaculture waste show that; aquaculture industry on both regions have not had any obvious negative effect on the coastal waters of Bushehr but it seems if other sources of pollutions in the region is not controlled, then the aquaculture industry can contribute to occurrence of environmental problems.

Beschreibung: In 22 August of 2000 an adequate amount of fresh cow manure was transported form Golshahr Cow Farm and deposited in the experiment site. The transported manure was divided equally between five treatments of siloes, depots without plastic coverage, depots with plastic coverage, barrels and tubes. Deposited manures retained in the treatments till 20 May 2001. During the retention time, sampling from three points of cow farm and other treatments carried out with monthly intervals and samples were analyzed for determination -of Ca, Na, NDF. ADF. crude protein, crude fat, moisture; crude fiber, minerals, dry mater and NFE. Temperature, pH and redox potential were measured in situ and all data were analyzed statistically by SAS general linear models. The results showed that month and treatment exert significant effects (P〈0.01, on the variations of the most measured parameters. Depots with plastic coverage had highest mean temperature and then there were depots without plastic coverage, siloes and barrels, respectively. “The temperature increased significantly in the first month of retention but showed some fluctuations in subsequent 4-5 months and then remained relatively constant till the end of experiment period. Depots without plastic coverage showed highest moisture. Optimum moisture value of 40-50 percent obtained for siloes and depots with plastic coverage. Lowest Ca and highest Na values were measured in fresh manure of the cow farm. In two first month of retention time NDF decreased significantly in most treatment but increased subsequently and reached maximum 'percentages during 5-6th month of retention. In first month of retention ADF showed significant decrease in most of treatments but increased in further months and reached to maximum percentage after 4 month retention. In siloes, depots without plastic coverage, and depots with plastic coverage the percentages of protein and fat reduced significantly in the first month of retention, modified during subsequent 6 months and reach valuable percentages. Depots with plastic coverage showed maximum and most suitable protein and fat percentages of about 9 and 2.75 percent after 6 months retention. The percent of crude fiber decreased to minimum level after 3, 5 and l, retention months in siloes, depots without plastic coverage, and depots with plastic coverage and barrels respectively. Values of surface pH in siloes, depots without plastic coverage vice versa of other parameters were minima of 7.1-7.5 at the beginning of retention time that reached to 7.8-8.4 after 4 retention months. The pH of cow farm mostly was more than other treatments. Amount of redox potential in cow farm, siloes, depots without plastic coverage, depots with plastic coverage and barrels fluctuated between -48 to -109, -84 to -12, -62 to -22, -86 to -30 and -65 to -21 millivolt. The minimum levels were at beginning of period and the maximum levels obtained after 4 months of retention in treatment I and 2, after 3 months in treatments 3 and after 5 months in treatment 4. Therefore with care to extent and terns of parameters changes in variation treatments, depots with plastic coverage can introduce the best retention conditions during 4-6 months for decomposition of organic manure for usage in aquaculture.

Beschreibung: This project was conducted in five independent experiments in appropriate tanks with suitable aeration and water fellow. Temperature: an experiment designed to evaluate the effect of temperature on growth and survival of tilapia fry by using four thermal regimes consist of 22, 25, 28 and 31 °c in three replicates. Fries with initial wight of .014 g were stocked in plastic container with 10 liter capacity at the rare of 5/liter. Fish were fed on rainbow trout commercial food at a rate of 30 % of biomass 5 times per day. The results showed that some growth indices such as final body weight, daily growth rate, specific growth rate and weight gain increased by increasing water temperature significantly. Although fry survival increased by increasing temperature but these differnces were not significant. the results suggest that in larviculture of Nile tilapia water temperatue should not be less than 28°c. Density: compressibility of Nile tilapia fry was studied by using plastic container with 13 liter capacity. Fry with initial weigh of .034 g were stocked in four treatments 10, 15, 20 and 30 fry/l with four replicates. They fed on rainbow trout food according to their biomass five times per day during the light period. The results showed that some growth indices such as average of final body weight, daily growth rate, specific growth rate and survival decreased by increasing stocking density significantly, while feed conversion rate increased by increasing stocking density. Considering the experiment, it could be suggested that lower stocking density (10/l) resulted the best growth efficiency and survival of Nile tilapia fry. On the other hand, compering the results of growth and survival rate(84%) in two stocking densites(15 and 20/l) showed that it is passible to culture Nile tilapia fry at the stocking density of 20fry/l in suitable condition. Salinity: A study conducted to evaluate the effect of salinity on growth and survival rate of Nile tilapia fry by using six salinity levels (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 ppt) with three replicates. Fry fed on rainbow trout food five times per day during the light period. Results showed that some growth indices such as average of final body weight, daily growth rate, specific growth rate and survival rate increased by increasing salinity levels up to 8 ppt significantly, and then decreased by increasing salinity levels up to 20 ppt. according to the experiment, it seems that larviculture of Nile tilapia in brackish water is available and the best results achives at 8 ppt. considering the results of growth and survival rate at 16 ppt showed that Salinity up to 16 ppt was tolerable, although reduced the growth and survival of Nile tilapia fry. Photoperiod: the objective of this study was to examine the effects of photoperiod on growth and survival rate of Nile tilapia fry by planning four treatments (6L:18D, 12L:12D, 18L:6D and 24L:0D) and four replicates. Light provided by tow fluorescent lamps those set at a distance of 60 cm above the tanks and worked by an automatic timer. Fry fed on rainbow trout food five times per day. Results showed that average of final body weight, daily growth rate and specific growth rate were loest in 6L:18D and these indices increased by increasing light duration. these differences were not significant among 6L:18D and 12L:12D. but the differences between 6L:18D with 18L:6D and 24L:0D were significant. Evaluation of survival rate showed that photoperiod did not significant effect on survival in all treatments. These finding suggests that a 12L:12D cycle be adequate in case of larval rearing. Cannibalism: An experiment designed to determine the occurrence of cannibalism among 5 different size groups of (5, 10, 20 and 30 g with fry 0.45 g) Nile tilapia population (fry / fingerling) under two stocking densities (1 / 2 and 1 / 4 fingerling / fry) with three replicates in the poly etilen tanks in brackish water condition. Fry were counted at 6, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 hours after stocking in two methods (feeding and no feeding). In the feeding trial fingerling were fed on rainbow trout food two times per day. The results showed that cannibalism became more intense as the size difference increased. After passing time cannibalism rate increased. Also results showed increasing fry density causes increasing cannibalism in both treatments (feeding and without feeding). Feeding fingerlings (predator) was effective in reducing cannibalism.

Beschreibung: White Spot Disease (WSD) is a important disease due to economic impacts in shrimp industries. Spreading of this disease in shrimp farms can caused a 100% mortality during 3-10 days. Therefore control of this disease is a strategy in shrimp industry. Vaccination is a way to control of WSD. In several years ago during a project several type vaccine of this virus by association of Atomic Energy Organization is produced that among of them the virus inactivated by GAMA radiation had better results in laboratory. To test of this vaccine in field, a research pilot was carried out. Initially 20000 shrimp napliies were obtained from one of commercial hatchery in Bushehr province, then devided to two groups vaccinated and unvaccinated. The vaccinated group also devided . 26and PL12 , group B vaccinated at PL15and PL 5to two groups, group A that vaccinated at postlarva e (PL) Rrsults showed that difference of growth performance and survival rate between vaccinated and unvaccinated without challenge with WSV after 80 days is not significantly (P〈0.05). but survival rate in vaccinated groups after challenge with WSV was significantly (P〈0.05) further the unvaccinated group. Also the results showed survival rate of group B after challenge with WSV is better than group A and this difference was significantly (P〈0.05). this study showed vaccination of shrimp postlarvae with GAMA radiation vaccine can control of shrimp mortality in incidence of WSD in farms.

Beschreibung: For the first time white spot disease (WSD) was reported in shrimp farms of khoozestan province, in southwest of IRAN in 2002. Then in 2005 the neighbor province, boushehr, was contaminated. In 2008 WSD outbreak reported in sistan-bloochestan province in southeast of Iran. In 2015 all of southern shrimp farms of country except Hormozgan, the middle southern province, which has remained free of WSD, are being contaminated. White Spot disease suspended shrimp culture in thousands hectares of shrimp farms. Considering that white spot disease has not been observed in Hormozgan province yet, the question is; to what extent environmental and management factors participated in preventing WSD outbreak or cause WSD outbreak. In this study (20102012), the effects of environmental factors and management, stressors that decrease immune system function of shrimp are discussed. In addition, the role of pathogen as the main factor of outbreak is discussed. The goal of this study is to define environmental parameters and management practices associates with outbreak of white spot disease in affected provinces and discover reasons of being Hormozgan province free of this disease. In this study the role of the local environmental factors and management practice stressors in susceptibility to WSD was determine. Both the effects of environmental factors in water of ponds including total ammonia, nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, transparency, and temperature and management issues related to biosecurity are studied. There were overlaps on physical and chemical parameter values obtained in clear areas with contaminated areas .Results of the data analysis suggest that lack of association with WSD incidence was 7 times greater than WSD incidence despite of disease outbreak in sistan-bloochestan province, so other sources of white spot disease virus incidence was suspected in affected areas. Histopathological examinations and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests during project performance did not reveal white spot disease virus evidences in post larvae examined from khoozestan province stocked in farms but disease outbreak was happened in that farms , so we suspected to management practice include feed , pond preparation and carrier of disease . Recorded values of temperature and salinity in some months during inspection in Hormozgan province specified stressful condition that may lead to WSD outbreak, however the disease did not appear. Therefore the hypothesis that the water physical and chemical conditions are reasons to prevent disease outbreak in Hormozgan province is being rejected. The policy of Hormozgan’s fishery authorities, to replaced Fenneropenaeus indicus with specific pathogen free Litopenaeus vannamei, that is more resistant to some of diseases, before incidence of WSD in farms and to before being endemic in the Hormozgan province, made an advantage compare to affected southern provinces that introduced Litopenaeus vannamei after WSD prevalence to their farms. However it does not guarantee to maintain current trend of being Hormozgan province farms free of white spot disease. Therefore establishing the principals of biosecurity are strongly emphasized. Strategies taken by the proficient authorities in preparation of SPF shrimp broodstock can be the most important factor in preventing WSD. Regarding biosecurity principals purchased feed must be free of shrimp head powder. Construction the new shrimp farms should be as far as it could be away from contaminated areas.

Beschreibung: The project of "Assessment of different methods of water treatment on decreasing pathogenic bacteria in shrimp hatcheries" achieved by mean of reviewing the effectiveness of various methods on the water treatment to reduce bacterial load of sea water. The project performed in Bandargah region of Bushehr province in order to checking the effect of different methods on the sea water and bacterial population. This project has been done over a year. In this study a total of 138 samples was collected during seven times and was evaluated as well as 7 treatments. In this study, the comparison of the effect of each factors (sand filter, chlorine, ultra violet ray, chlorine combined with ultra violet ray) was analyzed on the sea water by means of disinfection. During this study, other environmental factors such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and salinity was measured till we can ensure that they don’t have any negative impact on the treatments. Results showed that the density of total bacteria in sea water (Control) was averagely 5187 CFU/ml, this was done while the total density of bacteria in the sea water, reservation pool sample, sand filter water, water that irradiated with ultraviolet rays, chlorinated water and the water that was influenced by both chlorine and ultra violet ray was respectively 5187 2137, 4449 2042, 2782 1335, 1164 692, 143 104, 87 76 CFU/ml. Therefore, reservation pool, sand filter, ultra violet ray, chlorine, chlorine-ultra violet ray each of them was reduce respectively 14, 46, 77, 97, 98 percent of the density of total bacteria or in other words they reduced 0.06, 0.27, 0.65, 1.56, 1.77 log of the total population of bacteria in water. Moreover, the results from the total count of vibrios showed that reservation pool, sand filter, ultra violet ray, chlorine, chlorine-ultra violet ray each of them was reduce respectively 17, 47, 74, 98, 99 percent of the density of total vibrios or in other words they reduced respectively 0.08, 0.27, 0.59, 1.66, and 1.95 log of the total population of vibrios in sea water. Also the bacteria that isolated from each treatment were identified with the use of biochemical methods that totally were includes a wide range of bacteria, the identified vibrios were: Vibrio alginolyticus, V. costicola, V. fischeri, V. fluvialis I, V. fluvialis II, V. harveyi, V. natriegens, V. nigripulchritudo, V. parahaemolyticus, V. plagius I, V. vulnificus, V. anguilarum I, V. campbellii, V. nereis, V. proteolyticus, V. splendidus, and Unknown V. spp. Other identified bacteria belonging to the following genus: Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Borkholderia, Eschricia, Enteroacter, Flavobacterium, Micococcus, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Serratia, Staphaphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Unknown Bacteria spp. By comparing the results, we concluded that the best result was related to treatment that the sea water had been disinfected after the combined effects of chlorine and ultraviolet ray. It was determined that this process in compared with other treatments, had been reduced the total number of bacteria, the total number of Vibrios, the number of sucrose fermentative vibrios, and the number of non-sucrose fermentative vibrios respectively 98, 99, 98, 99 percent. In other words, the number of bacteria was reduced respectively 1.77, 1.94, 1.82, 2.23 log. So in this study, the applied method was introduced as the most effective way of disinfecting sea water. Meanwhile, none of pathogenic bacteria for shrimp including Vibrio harveyi was isolated by using this treatment. Comparing the results showed that the combined effects of chlorine and ultraviolet radiation is the most effective applied method for disinfecting sea water.

Beschreibung: At present, the aquaculture industry to provide proper instructions in the field of health management, including production of Specific Pathogen Free shrimp (SPF), require sensitive and reliable methods for the detection and identification of pathogenic microorganisms. Molecular methods which used in the detection of microorganisms have a high discriminatory power in the taxonomy and in relation to libraries in the world. On the other hand, the accurate identification of microorganisms, providing the genetic data bank of shrimp pathogens and maintenance of these strains is the step to promote further research on the mechanisms of pathogenesis of pathogens, diagnosis, treatment, prevention of disease, identify indigenous production kits, diagnosis re emerging and emerging diseases and their origin. Therefore, in this project, by using ribotyping technique, native isolated pathogenic bacteria and fungi were identified and recorded in the gene bank database center. During sampling of shrimp and water of Specific Pathogen Free shrimp center, 40 bacterial strains were isolated, which 8 of them had the most frequency and identification based on 16S rDNA sequencing was performed. Bacteria identified are: Vibrio nigripulchritudo strain IS013(GenBank:KP843725), Vibrio brasiliensis strain IS014 (GenBank:KR186076), Vibrio rotiferianus strain IS015 (GenBank:KR186077), Vibrio azureus strain IS012 (GenBank:KJ018724.1), Vibrio owensii strain IS016 (GenBank:KR186078), Agarivorans gilvus strain IS017 (GenBank:KR186079), Vibrio brasiliensis IS018 (GenBank:KR186080) and Vibrio alginolyticus strain IS019 (GenBank:1817854), which were recorded in The World Bank genes. In this study fungal isolates were not detected.

Beschreibung: Hamoun fish, Schizothorax zarudnyi, is an indigenous species of the eastern waters of Iran, which is exclusively found in this region. However recently drought occurrence in the Chahnimeh reservoirs (a semi natural water body) making them vulnerable to extinction. As an appropriate action to address this problem and according to the 3 side contract between Italian Government – UNDP - Islamic republic of Iran Government and the Italian government financial support to reduce poverty in the Province of Sistan-Baluchestan through the reinforcement and dissemination of aquaculture activities the project was developed at the Hamoun Research Unit by the Chahbahar Fisheries Research Center to record the breeding normative of 1 g weight larvae for restocking and other researching purposes. 331 broodstocks of the indigenous species Shizothorax zarudnyi weighing 800-2450 g were collected from the Chahnimeh reservoirs in early autumn, 2006. From 5/3/2007 ( the project is supported and communicated on 2010) , Ovulation was stimulated with three stimulators; pituitary extract (3-6 mg kg-1 body weight), GnRH-A (20-30 mg kg-1 body weight) and anti dopamine (10-15 mg kg-1 body weight) that was given in 2-3 doses to breeders. Of 169 injected breeders , some were injected On mid March of 2007 (12-13 ºC water tempreture) responded to the injection 25% ,while the rest were injected On April of 2008 (14-16 ºC water tempreture) responded to the injection 65%. In the present project of 167 breeders 82 were female and 87 male. Totally 30 female breeders released their eggs in different stages. 20 female breeders released their eggs completely, 3 breeders released half of their eggs and 7 released 1/3 of their eggs. The male breeders just injected in the final dose of hormontrapy and all were ready for releasing sperms however the ovulation in female breeders occurs between 353-428 h ºC and after the final dose of injection. Ripe eggs were stripped from the females and fertilization was done by the dry method. Fertilized eggs were transferred to veis incubators and troughs. Incubation period for eggs differs and larvae hatch out after about 910 days at an average water temperature of 12.5 °C. Maintained at 13-14 °C, complete absorption of yolk sac in Shizothorax zarudnyi larvae occurred after 5-8 days. Larvae were fed with a mixture of powdered milk and egg yolk in this stage followed by decapsulated Artemia cysts and nauplii of Artemia and then on formulated starter diets used for carps . Because the ponds were not ready, larvae were maintained in troughs for about ten days before they were transferred to two 1200 m2 earthen ponds where they reached a body weight of about 1 g. They were then handed over to the Iranian Fisheries department in the region. Larvae were fed with the starter feed SFCO in the earthen ponds. About 350 thousand larvae were stocked in two earthen ponds. Based on the results of present study and other studies we may conclude that artificial breeding in Schizothorax can be successfully achieved at 14-16 ºC in flow through systems using hormone therapy (combination of GnRha and anti dopamine) and larvae could be easily cultured in earthen ponds. However this species exhibits lower growth rates as compared to carps its high expenses could have an important role in economical feasible.

Beschreibung: Considering decrease in total catch of sturgeon & threat of extinction in their stocks, special measures might be adopted. Sperm cryopreservation is one of the suitable methods to prepare bank of frozen gamete for future use in artificial breeding in order to prohibit extinction of sturgeon stocks. This study carried out on 27 male sturgeon during 2001-2004. The investigated sturgeon include 12 male Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus), 7 male Acipenser stellatus, 5 male Acipenser nudiventris and 3 male Huso huso. Sperm Collected from spawners in Shahid Beheshti & Shahid Marjani sturgeon rearing & propagation Complex in Rasht & Gorgan. The Sperm which was collected from Shahid Marjani propagation complex placed in the sealed Vessels & transferred by coleman in near zero temperature to cryopreservation laboratory of international sturgeon research institute for further investigation. In this study, the sperm was diluted in ratio 1:1 in two culture media containing dimethyl sulfoxide & glycerol (BC) and the samples stored in 1 ml insulin syringe & 0.5 ml Piot. The diluted sperm froze in a special temperature by automated freezer model 5300 (France IMV). Three phases applied to freeze the samples which are as follow: 1- Begin to freeze from +50c to -100c (30c /min) 2- From 10 0c to 70 0c (20 0c /min) 3- From 70 0c to 130 0c (25 0c /min) After freezing, the samples placed in liquid nitrogen containers with 196 0c temperature. For thawing, the sperm samples took out of liquid nitrogen & placed in water 40 0c. Then motility percent & the sperm quality investigated under 400x microscope. According to the results the mean motility percentage of fresh sperm in Persian sturgeon, Acipenser Stellatus, Acipenser nudiventris and Huso huso was 84, 73.75, 67.5 and 76.66, respectively. The mean percentage of motility in frozen sperm which placed in media containing dimethyl sulfoxide was 32, 37.5, 40 and 20%, respectively. Also, the frozen samples that preserved in BC media (Biociphus) showed 5.2, 75.25, 4.11 and 2.66% motility, respectively. In blank group, the mean fertilization percent of eggs was 90, 72, 71.25 and 90%, respectively. In the treatment group applying frozen sperm in culture media containing dimetlylsulfoxide, the mean fertilization rate was 30, 6.5, 25.39 and 4.75%. Furthermore, no fertilization (0.0%) observed using frozen sperm stored in Biociphus culture media containing glycerol. There was no significant difference in fertilization percent comparing the two storage places (syringe & Piot). According to investigations the culture media containing dimethyl sulfoxide, is a suitable diluter for sturgeon sperm. So, the Cryopreservation technique can be used to preserve the sturgeon sperm for future fertilization & through this way we can prevent extinction of sturgeon stocks.

All water samples were collected from under-groundwater, surface water and wastewater in 12 stations and the results are as follow: The mean concentrations of DO, BOD5, COD, HCO3-, CO32-, TA, Ca2+, Mg2+, TH, TSS, TDS, Cl-, PO43-, NH4+, NO2- and NO3- were determined about 11.86±0.49, 5.95±0.11, 4.96±0.59, 28.1±6.1, 14.34±1.64, 36.30±2.33, 64.66±2.34, 28.84±1.52, 271.62±8.41, 0.37±0.03, 0.45±0.02, 28.02±1.96, 0.06±0.01, 0.010±0.001, 0.01±0.001 and 0.96±0.03 mg/l, respectively and also temperature, pH and EC were 12.7±0.61°C, 8.00±0.02 unit, 0.57±0.02 ms/cm in all samples. The surface water quality of Haraz River and its tributaries were suitable for usual applications such as aquatic matters, but based on BOD5 need to more attention for human usages. The water quality index (WQI) of surface water was classified in group II at all stations that shows serious water quality changes due to domestic and agriculture sewage. The groundwater was affected by different matters that caused change of water quality parameters. The wastewater was classified from good to moderate based on BOD5. The quality of wastewater was declined at down-stream with decreasing DO and pH and increasing BOD5 pollutants. The mean concentrations of aldrin and endrin were about 0.66 ± 0.59 and 0.71 ± 1.07 µg/l, respectively. The maximum seasonal concentration of organochlorin pesticides (OCPs) were detected in fall, winter and spring for endosulfan sulfate, γ-BHC, heptachlor, endrin aldehyde compounds about 2.85, 0.34, 0.14 and 0.14µg/l, respectively. The maximum seasonal percentage range of OCPs in fall, winter and spring for endosulfan sulfate, DDD and β-BHC were 42, 25 and 25 %, respectively. The maximum seasonal concentrations during fall, winter and spring were detected in Sorkhroud and Polechelave stations for only Fe about 1.48, 3.3 and 8.22 µg/l, respectively. Also for Hg in spring was determined about 17.2 mg/l. The mean concentration of Zn, Fe and Hg in water sampled were 0.23 ± 1.01 and 1.21 ± 2.00 µg/l, respectively and 4.65± 6.38 mg/l. The maximum concentration of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) in summer was 971µg/l. The mean concentration of surfactant during fall, winter, spring and summer was 418.62 ± 52.16 µg/l. The maximum seasonal percentage ranges of surfactant during fall, winter, spring and summer in all stations of sampling were 76, 76, 100 and 100 %, respectively. Tottaly 15 families of macrobenthos were identified in Haraz River. The maximum mean of abundance and biomass in Sorkhroud and Nour-roud stations were 1177±256 ind/m2 and 3609 ± 935mg/m2, respectively. During Seasons, the maximum mean abundance and biomass were detected in fall and winter with 1185±444 ind/m2 and 3891±849 mg/m2, respectively. Water quality were classified by Hilsenhoff Biotic Index such as Sorkhrood station as "Very Poor", Isar town station as "Fairly Poor" and Karesang and Nor-roud stations as "good" qualification. The maximum of total coli forms and fecal coli forms in surface water were observed in Sorkhrood about 4.9 and 2.3CFU/100ml, respectively. The maximum of total coli forms and fecal coli forms in groundwater were observed in Halomsar and Absak stations about 4 and 1.7CFU/100ml, respectively. Maximum of total coli forms and fecal coli forms in wastewater were observed in Nor-roud station about 3.1 and 1.6CFU/100ml, respectively. The Ovary of nematode in wastewater were observed in Nor-roud and Isar Town stations about 30 through 124, respectively.

Beschreibung: Study of shrimp nursery ground in the Northern part of Bushehr province from Farakeh creek to Genaveh The fourth phase of "study of shrimp nursery ground in the Northern part of Bushehr province" was carried from October 2000 to August 2001. Sampling was carried for larval stages by using Bongo net with 500 micrometer mesh size, and for adults with Trawl net of I centimeter mesh size. In 12 stations, 25576 juvenile and adult shrimp and 651.13 larves were collected and identified. Most of these samples belonged to the families of Sergestidae, Penaeidae Caridea. Acetes cfsergestidae family, both in adults and larval stage (57% for adult and 84% for larval stage) were identified. Adults wrere caught only in Ramleh creek in Feb. 2001, and the most presence of Acetes' larvae were also in Ramleh creek in Dec. 2000. 33% of adults were belonged to Metapenaus stebbingii of Penaeidae family. The most presence of this species was in Feb. and Mar. 2001. Although no larvae of this species was found in the field, it seems there is no significance between pH, salinity and area temperature with the presence of these species of shrimp.
