    Description: Studies on the effects of crude oil and its fractions on the blood haemoglobin (HB) neutrophil (NP) concentration in the blood of Heterobranchus bidorsalis juveniles were carried out. Two study periods (toxicity and recovery) and four oil types (Bonny-light crude oil (BLCO), premium motor spirit (PMS), kerosene (DPK) and lubricating engine oil (lBO) at 1.00, 2.00, 4.00 and 8.00ml were used. There were significant differences (P〈0.05, p〈 0.01) on the HB and NP values in blood of fish samples. The elevated values of HB levels in fish exposed to 2.00,4.00 and 8.00m1 L-1 BLCC, 2.00ml L-1 PMS and DPK; and 4.00ml L -1 LBO over the levels in the control fish were in consonance with the results of other workers. Increases in NP values in fish exposed to the four oil types (BLCO, PMS, DKP and LBO) relative to the control could be part of the immunological attempts by the fish to mobilize the body's defence mechanisms. The relatively high percent mortality and low survival of H. bidorsalis juveniles exposed to 4.00 and 8.00mlL-1 concentration of the four oil types over the other concentration implied that these concentrations were probably lethal to fish existence.

    Description: The acquisition or loss of Clinostomum tilapiae parasites by Oreochromis niloticus was studied. Four groups of 25 healthy fishes were stocked in the upper part of serial experimental ponds, while another four groups of 25 infected fishes were also stocked at the rear part of the serial experimental ponds. All the groups were fed at 3% body weight with the same compounded fish feed. Acquisition or loss of parasites and growth was monitored for a period of six months. The mean relative growth rate was 11.04kg/month for the healthy fishes and 5.62g/month for the infected fishes. The mean specific growth rate was 38.75% and 31.25% for the healthy and infected groups respectively. However the results were not statistically significant (p 〉 0.05). The parasite did not multiply on the host body rather the infection rate reduced from 100% to between 44 and 78%, parasite burden was reduced from an average of 3 per fish to 2.25 while the healthy fish acquired the parasite and the average burden was 2.15. The mean values of the prevailing water quality parameters were within the optimum range acceptable in fish culture systems in the tropics.

    Description: The importance of information in every sector cannot be over-emphasized. The ability to identify and utilize our natural endowment depends on the availability of information resources within or at the right time. The low level of information provision in Nigeria is attributed to infrastructure as a result of inadequate funding of the sector. Research has shown that information has revolutionized the society, moving the world from the industrial age to the information age and completely changing the way the economy functions. Success goes with the best information. However, for now, if there must be increase in fish production and eco-tourism participation, employment opportunities, poverty reduction, food security and nature appreciation in terms of environment and living creatures, our fisheries scientists and policy makers will have to rely on sources of information using the advantage of libraries, and Information Communication Technology (lCT). This development in information resources affects many areas of Nigerian economy including the fisheries and eco-tourism sectors. The contribution of information resource in the development of the fisheries sub-sector can be viewed under those of fisheries information products like the Nigerian Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences.     Description: A completely randomised design with three replicates was used for an experiment conducted to study the profitability of vitamin C inclusion into the ration formulation for Heterobranchus longifilis. Six different levels 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 or 250 mg of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) kg-1 diet was included in a 42.5% crude protein basal diet and fed to triplicate groups of twenty fingerlings. The groups fed diets with vitamin C had statistically significant (P〈0.05) higher final weight than the group fed the control diet without vitamin C at the end of twenty weeks study, Feed consumed was significantly (P〈0.05) lower in the group fed diet without vitamin C. There was a significant (P〈0.05) difference between the groups fed 0 and 50 mg vitamin C kg-1 diets, but no significant (P〉0.05) difference between the groups fed diets with 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg vitamin C kg-1 diet on this parameter. Mortality was significantly (P〈0.05) higher in the groups fed diet without vitamin C while there was no significant difference (P〉0.05) between the fish fed the diets with respective graded levels of vitamin C. The thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) of the liver and whole body of fish was significantly (P〈0.05) higher in fish fed diet devoid of vitamin C. Cost per kilogram of fish base on feed input was significantly (P〈0.05) higher in the group fed diet without vitamin C than those enriched with vitamin C. However, within groups fed with vitamin C cost per kg of fish was significantly (P〈0.05) decreasing in the following order: diet 2〉 diet 6〉 diets 4, 5, and 3. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) between fish fed diets 3, 4 and 5 with respect to cost per kilogram of fish. This study vividly showed that there is no alternative to the use of a complete diet with vitamin C in an intensive practical farming of H. longifilis geared towards optimum profit maximisation in terms of feed as one of the variable input.

    Description: The growth performance and nutrient utilization in Clarias gariepinus fingerlings fed cooked breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) seed meal based diet as a replacement for maize, investigated for 8 weeks. Five (5) diets of breadfruit seed meal substituted for maize at different levels of inclusion (0%; 25%; 50%; 75% and 100%) were fed to the fingerlings at 5% body weight twice daily in hapa of 1m x 1m x 1m. The hapas wee submerged in a pond and each hapa stocked with 20 fingerlings of mean weight of 5.8~c0.00g. Evaluation of growth parameters nutrient utilization of the experimental diets showed that there was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in mean final weight (MFW); specific growth rate (SGR); feed conversion rate (FCR) protein efficiency ratio (PER) and apparent net protein utilization (ANPU) among the treatments. The results suggested a net advantage of replacing dietary maize with cooked breadfruit seed meal for Clarias gariepinus fingerlings at 50% and above levels of inclusion under the condition of the experiment.

    Description: In order to compare the effect of raw, cooked, toasted and extruded soybean meals on the growth and nutrient utilization of Heterobranchus longifilis fingerlings, 120 pure Heterobranchus longifilis fingerlings were purchased at the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR) improved genetic fish hatchery and randomly allocated into four different treatments with two replicates each with 15 fingerlings in 8 aquaria tanks. Four different diets containing 40% crude protein each were compounded and fed to the fish at 5% body weight for 56 days. At the end of the feeding trials, growth performance and nutrient utilization were evaluated. The results revealed that fish fed toasted soybean-based diets had highest mean weight gain (MWG) of 16.39g, specific growth rate (SGR) of 2.03%/day, and food conversion ratio (FCR) of 2.18. The fingerlings fed the extruded soybean-based diet gave the least growth performance. It could be concluded in practice, that toasted soybean-based diet is optimal for growth of Heterobranchus longifilis fingerlings.

    Description: 200 fingerlings of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) of average weight of 22.8~c0.04g were used to investigate the nutritive value of Pawpaw (Carica papaya) leaf-based diets. Five (5) isocaloric and iso-nitrogenous diets containing fishmeal protein at a rate of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% along with the pawpaw leaf were formulated. The diet without the pawpaw leaf meal serves as the control. The fish fingerlings were fed at 5% body weight per day for 56 days in plastic bowls. It was observed at the end of the experiment that pawpaw leaf meal was suitable as a protein supplement when incorporated at 50% replacement. The body weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR) and food conversion ratio (FCR) values of 18.68g, 1.07%/ day and 4.72 respectively were highest in diet with 50% replacement closely followed by diet with 25% replacement. Based on the results, it could be recommended that in practice 50% replacement of pawpaw leaf meal with fish meal is optimal in practical diet of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fingerlings. Nevertheless, complete replacement of pawpaw leaf meal decreases growth rate and should not be used in Clarias gariepinus fingerlings.

    Description: Most of the fish produced in Nigerian fresh-water systems are marketed as dried fish, since there are few alternative methods of preservation for distant markets. Considerable quantities are lost through insect infestation, fragmentation during sorting, mixing, storage and transportation. In Nigeria, a high proportion of the dried fish sold in the market harbours beetle infestation, mainly Dermestes maculatus and Necrobia rufipes. D. maculatus is the dominant pest, accounting for 50.0%. The larvae of both beetles are the most numerous forms and are responsible for a large proportion of the damage of dried fish.

    Description: The study was conducted to assess consumer's preference of fish products in Yenagoa Metropolis, Bayelsa State. One hundred and ninety consumers were randomly selected for the study. Results showed that fishery products in Yenagoa metropolis include fresh, smoked, fried, dried, canned and frozen fish. Sixty-eight percent of the respondents said that the products are enough, whereas seventy-six percent feel the variety of fishery products is low. Majority of the respondents (86%) preferred fresh fish followed by smoked fish which was preferred by sixty-four percent of the respondents. Age, ethnic grouping, gender, marital status and education did not have any significant influence on the preferences of the consumers (P〉O.05). Major problems identified by the consumers were exorbitant prices of fish because of the activities of middlemen, unhygienic selling environment and scarcity of fish products. Consequently, it is recommended that an adequate system of financing small scale fisheries be evolved to reduce the influence of middlemen; sanitary laws should be enacted and enforced in the fish markets around the metropolis; Establishment of modern fish markets in Yenagoa to boast fish production, aquacultural investors should be attracted.

    Description: Fresh tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was smoked using two different kilns to evaluate and compare the microbial changes or quality, physicochemical and organoleptic characteristics. Smoked samples were dominated by Gram-positive bacterial, flora, Bacillus, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Fungi isolated included Aspergillus spp, and Penicillium spp. The two kilns used in smoking are Modified Drum Kiln (MDK) and Mud kiln (MK). The MDK had a higher impact on the total viable count (TVC) and reduced the TVC of the fresh sample by 37.5% while the MK reduced it by 29.5%. In a similar trend the MDK reduced the number of Staphylococci and fungi by 43.3% and 33.8% respectively while the MK only reduces them by 30.9% and 26.3% respectively. Statistical test indicated significant difference (P〈0.05) in the microbial load of fish processed in the two kilns. However, the reduction of the Coliform by the two smoking kilns is not significantly different.

    Description: The objective of this study was to determine the best smoking method that will enhance consumer preference for Clarias gariepinus without affecting negatively the nutritive value. Two methods of smoking were used: cold and hot smoking. The fish were smoked with improvised drum smoking kiln and oven. Smoked fish samples obtained were subjected to chemical analyses and sensory evaluation. Chemical analyses showed that the smoked fish were still rich in protein (66.0067.52%) and fat (9.83-12.28%); while the moisture content ranged between 7.82-8.24% and ash, 12.86-14.16%. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the protein, ash and moisture contents. Significant differences (P〈0.05) were observed in the Calcium(Ca), Potassium(K), Sodium(Na), Zinc(Zn), Lead(Pb), Iron(Fe) and Phosphorus(P) contents. Only hot smoke-dried (HSD) fish samples showed no presence of lead. The levels of sodium(Na) and potassium(K) in the smoked fish were relatively high, though, the amount of potassium(k) was higher. Sensory evaluation results revealed that there were no significant differences (P〉0.05) in the colour and taste ratings of the smoked fish samples. However, significant differences (P〈0.05) were observed in the odour, texture and overall acceptability. Hot smoke-dried and cold oven-dried Clarias gariepinus had the best overall acceptability in ratings.

    Description: Lagos state has a major sea port for landing of frozen fish from Mauritania, Senegal, the Scottish waters and other European countries. In the last three years, the dense population of the state has encouraged all kinds of trade to thrive. Fish as a major food in many Nigerian diets has been known to complement the high carbohydrate intake of majority of the Nigerian populace because of the unaffordable prices of beef in the market. The market for frozen fish is rich in Lagos. It has provided many women fishmongers a livelihood for over a decade. They have been able to sustain their families and improve their social status over the years. This study reports the modus operandi of the trade. The study covered a period of three months. Fish sales were monitored in Epe, Oyingbo, Ijora and Alaba markets. The cooperation of the heads of markets (Iya Olojas) were requested at every market. It was ensured that observations and the interviews/questionnaires do not interfere with the women's activities. Specific areas focused upon in the study included countries of fish imports, most acceptable species, packaging, purchase price, sales price and profit margins. Other important factors in the fish market that were studied included entrance into the fish marketing business, sources of finance and problems. The study also made suggestions on how to improve upon the fish marketing business of women in Lagos State.

    Description: An experimental growth trial in floating net-hapas at three stocking densities in concrete pond was carried out. 4.68 5.25g mean individual weight fish were stocked at 25, 50 and 100 per m3. A 40% protein balanced diet was used as feed. The results of the study showed no statistical significant difference in growth among the three treatments. Food conversion ratios ranged in 1.60 to 1.82, and specific growth rates were between 3.80 and 4.16%/day. The result suggests that culture of C. gariepinus at a density of 50/m3 and production of 4.15kg/m3 in 84 days with production of 8.30kg/m3 in a growing season of 180 days is possible using the net-hapa systems enclosed in a concrete pond.

    Description: A feeding experiment was conducted to quantify the minimum dietary vitamin C requirement of Heterobranchus longifilis fingerlings and the minimal dietary inclusion levels that will meet these requirements after degradation from feed processing and storage. Fish were fed a basal diet with 42.5% crude protein for a conditioning period of 2 weeks. Following conditioning, fingerlings with initial mean weight, 2.3~c0.3 g were stocked as groups of 20 fingerlings into 30 litre tanks in a mini flowthrough experimental system and fed the basal diet and experimental diets supplemented with 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, or 250 mg of L-ascorbic acid kg-1 diet obtained from TUYIL PHARM. INDUSTRIES, lIorin, included into the basal diet by replacing part of the silica component and fed to triplicate groups for 20 weeks. Fish fed the control (0 mg vitamin C kg-1) diet exhibited deficiency signs including lordosis, caudal fin deformity, skin erosion and significantly suppressed weight gain and higher condition factor. Protein efficiency ratio and specific growth rate were significantly improved with increasing levels of vitamin C up to 200mg kg-1 diet. Tissue (liver, kidney, gills and muscle) ascorbate concentration generally reflected dietary inclusion levels with the signiticant lowest level occurring in the control groups. Vitamin C analysis after feed processing revealed 18 - 21% loss. The least mean squares error regression analysis of weight gain data on inclusion level of vitamin C revealed that the minimum dietary requirement of H. longifilis is 82.2~c0.2 mg vitamin C kg-1 diet which corresponds to 100 mg of vitamin C kg-1 diet based on data from this study.

    Description: Nigeria is a large fish consuming nation with a total consumption at more than 1.2 million tonnes, with fish imports making up about two thirds (700,000 t) of the fish supply. Although the contribution of fisheries to the Gross Domestic Product is only 3-4%, it occupies a very significant position in the primary sector providing employment for over a million people (FDF Statistics) and contributing about 50% of the animal protein intake of the population, particularly the resource poor. The estimated national demand for fish is estimated as high as 1.3 million metric tons with a wholesale value of more than $US 1 billion. Of this, the Federal Department of fisheries (FDF) estimated 511,000 tones are provided domestically or only about one third of demand, with an estimated per capita fish consumption ranging from 7.5-12 kg. With the current policy thrust towards fisheries development, there is excitement among stakeholders in private sector fish farming as shown by the expansion and renovation of existing farms and investments in few fish farms and hatcheries. This has brought the industry to a retail production value of N180 million. This development is not however without some challenges. Fish producers have rushed ahead with the production without support of a developed values chain. This gap is providing an entry point for interventions to greatly facilitate expansion of services in the value chain for this exciting industry. This paper therefore seeks to provide guidance on how to strategically focus aquaculture activities to capitalise on opportunities for increased employment and incomes.

    Description: Composition and abundance of macro-invertebrates, in Akwa Ibom State College of Agriculture, Fish Farm in UrukAnam Local Government Area, Nigeria, was studied from (December 2005 to May, 2006). Collections of samples were made with benthic net at weekly intervals. Stocked and unstocked ponds were selected for the study. The stocked ponds had 122 individuals macro invertebrates while unstocked pond had 160 number of individuals. The two ponds were dominated by Diptera followed by Coleoptera with single individual species. Groups which are regarded as clean water fauna were absent in both ponds. Generally, the ponds were poor in terms of number of taxa and individuals.

    Description: The length weight relationship and condition factor of Hemichromis fasciatus from Kainji Lake was studied. One hundred and twenty seven fish samples of total length ranging from 6.50cm 15.50cm and weigh between 4.00g and 60.00g collected between August 2006 and June 2007 were analyzed. Results showed that a, b and r - values were 0.0042, 3.442 and 0.966 respectively, while the condition factor (CF) values varied from 0.67 2.42 with mean of 1.203. The fish exhibited positive allometric growth pattern. The condition of the lake is favourable for the survival of the fish species.

    Description: Just like other animals and humans, fishes are prone to diseases and predation. Diseases can be caused by one and/or combination of any of the following agents e.g. bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. Diseases have become a primary constraint to aquacultural development, which may affect the achievement of a desired impact for rapid development of fish culture in Nigeria. Apart from causing mortalities, they also cause loss of production quality, reduced growth, reduced fecundity, loss due to control measures and loss due to social factors associated with the farmer. This review has discussed the diseases that are associated with integrated fish farming including livestock cum fish farming, poultry-cum fish farming, Waste water fish farming, rice-cum fish farming e.t.c. The control of diseases associated with integrated fish farming requires a multi-disciplinary approach including chemotherapy, sanitation, routine hygiene, quarantine, genetic selection and immunoprophylaxis. The treatment and prevention of fish diseases follow the same principles used in chemotherapy of higher animals.

    Description: The growth, mortality and recruitment pattern of Tympanotonus fuscatus var fuscatus were investigated using shell length (SL) - frequency data obtained from the mangrove swamps of the Bonny River, population. Computer based software package FiSAT (FAO - ICLARM Fish Stock Assessment tool) were used for the analysis. Sampling was done between January to December, 2004. Results obtained showed relatively high growth, low mortality and recruitment pattern with two peaks annually.

    Description: The length - weight relationship and condition factor of Citharinus citharus citharus was studied for a period of twelve (12) months from Lake Kainji, Nigeria. Nine hundred and eighty nine (989) fish samples (Citharinus citharus citharus) with total length ranging from 100mm to 530mm and weight ranging from 31.00g to 2250.00g were analysed. The results showed that the values of a, b and r were 0.0039, 3.2134 and 0.8997 respectively. The condition factor(K) values varied from 2.9 to 4.5, which means that the growth pattern of the fish is based on the value of 'a'. the fish species are also living well in the Lake as the 'K' are greater than one.

    Description: Studies on the food and feeding habit of T. fuscatus var fuscatus from the mangrove swamps of the Bonny River, Niger Delta revealed that the species is a deposit feeder but fed more on algae and protozoa. The variation of food types with season were determined from the numerical and frequency of occurrence methods of food analysis. The algae were of Stephanodiscus, Cosanodiscus. Navicula and Nitzschia species, while the protozoa were Arecella arenaria, Pseudodileptus and Trinema species. Feeding actively occurred at low tides, this coincided with the presence of algae on the mud surface. No qualitative seasonal variation occurred as T. fuscatus var fuscatus fed basically on the primary diets at all seasons.

    Description: Oreochromis niloticus was reared in 54 litre glass tanks being fed with 35% crude protein diets for 56 days. A basal diet consisting intact protein from groundnut cake and guinea com (4.56g lysine/100g protein) ,four graded levels of crystalline lysine was added to formulate diets consisting 6.87, 7.30, 7.41, 7.51 g lysine /100g protein and a reference diet of intact protein from groundnut cake, guinea com and fish meal having 5.37g lysine/100g protein was fed to six treatments in triplicate groups. The growth parameters shows there was no significant difference in the mean weight gain, specific growth rate, food conversion efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed varying levels of lysine. A maxima was obtained from the quadratic equation of food efficiency ratio against graded levels of lysine at 7.3g/100g protein which is the requirement. Carcass ash was higher with the initial fish while crude protein was highest with the the fish fed 7.3g lysine/l00g protein

    Description: Natural aquatic plants population can be healthy for any aquatic ecosystems as they serve as fish feed, play an important role in nutrient cycling, purify the water, control unwanted algal growth and support fauna including birds. Water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) have proven to be a persistent and expensive aquatic weed problem. The review was carried out in the face of current global challenge (climate change) which threatens biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources so that water hyacinth could be viewed as an asset of multifarious benefits considering the revealed highlights rather than been labeled expensive nuisance. The simplest method of management of aquatic weeds is to harvest it and utilize it for cost effectiveness in production such preparation of fish and livestock feeds, bio-gas production, making of charcoal briquetting and waste water treatment for domestic and industrial use. The main problem of utilization and management of water hyacinth is its high cost of transportation to sites for utilization but, once this can be overcome as revealed in the review appropriate utilization techniques is recommended.

    Description: Twenty samples of canned seafood consisting of tuna, mackerel, sardines, prawn and shrimp were collected from retail operations in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. Mercury content in these canned seafood were determined after digestion by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists methods. The mercury contents for all the canned seafood products have concentrations well below the permissible EU levels for this toxic metal. Their contribution to the body burden can therefore be considered negligible and the canned seafood products seem to be safe for human consumption.

    Description: There have been many outcries in the Nigerian media on the various environmental degradation of the vast water space in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria by oil explorers. About 70% of the Nigerian populace lives in the coastal areas where the occupation is predominantly fishing and farming. For most of the publications, the extents of impact on the fishing industry are not addressed in order for solutions to be given. Production from the fisheries sector has dropped astronomically thereby earning the country a deficit due to importation of frozen fish to the country. In this study, a survey of three states (Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta) in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria was done. The communities studied include Ogulagha, Okobelema and Okpoama. Personal interviews with fishermen and primary data on the sector’s contribution to fish production and GDP were also carried out. The study aimed at finding out the sources and nature of degradation and the impacts such have on the fishing industry and the socio-economics of the fishermen. The study revealed that there are no significant difference in the negative impacts of environmental degradation caused by the activities of the oil companies on the socio-economics of the fishermen ((F2,27=0.59, P〉0.05)) The difference is not significant and the hypothesis is therefore accepted. The major impact on fishing was depletion in catches and low income earnings by fishermen with a resultant poor quality of living and livelihood. Oil spills, foreign vessels incursions and bunkering, vandalization of pipelines were identified sources of depletion in fish catches from the wild. The personal interviews and Focus Group Discussion (FGDs) showed that most heads of communities rely on the remuneration they get from the companies and refused to mobilize the fishermen for joint action against the oil companies. Mitigation measures usually carried out by the oil companies do not actually replenish the destroyed mangroves where breeding of fishes take place. The communities need the Government to institute high level surveillance of the high seas and monitor the activities of oil explorers as well as education of the communities on the effects of bunkering near shoreline.

    Description: This study was carried out to determine the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Clarias anguillaris and Parachanna africana from Lake Geriyo Yola, Nigeria using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrophotometer. The results in (mg/kg, dry weight) showed different levels of Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Pb in the two fish species. The order of heavy metals accumulated by C. anguillaris and P. africana are Cr〉Fe〉Zn 〉 Mn〉Cu〉Ni〉Pb and Ni〉Fe〉Zn〉Cu respectively. The levels of Cr, Mn and Ni in C. anguillaris and in Ni in P. africana were higher than WHO and FEPA recommended maximum permissible limits (MPL) in fish, while the levels of Zn, Cu and Pb were below the standards. The results suggest that Lake Geriyo has high pollution loads of these heavy metals in fishes and could pose a health hazards to man. Consequently, close monitoring of heavy metal loads in Lake Geriyo is recommended with a view to minimizing the risks to health of the population that depend on the lake for their water and fish supply.

    Description: Static bioassays were carried out in the laboratory for 96h to investigate the effect of Parateq a synthetic base mud on the fingerling of Orechromis niloticus and their microbial population. The fingerlings were exposed to different concentrations (0, 1000, 3000, 5000 and 9000Mg/l) of drilling fluid. Fish mortality data were recorded at 24, 48, 72 and 96h and analysed using Finney’s Probit Analysis method to calculate LC50 values (concentration of drilling fluid in water that will kill 50% of the fish population in 96 hours). The 96h LC50 was 2210Mg/l.The mortality increased with increase in concentration, while, the lethal times decreased as concentration increased. The bacterial biomass ranged from 1.59 x 108 to 6.0 x 106CFU/ml while fungal biomass ranged from1.0 x 103 to 2.1 x 104 CFU/ml. Results revealed that there was an increase in fungal biomass with increase in mud concentration and a decrease in bacterial biomass with increase in mud concentration.

    Description: A static bioassay method to determine the acute toxicity of the herbicide propanil to Oreochromis niloticus was investigated under Laboratory conditions for 96 hours exposure period. Concentrations of propanil used include: 0.0096ml/l, 0.0103ml/l, 0.011ml/l and 0.012ml/l respectively. The lethal concentration (LC50) value of propanil on fingerlings of Oreochromis niloticus was 0.0097ml/l for 96 hours of exposure. The regression equation for probit kill from propanil was found to be Y = 29.84 + 12.33* log conc. (r2 0.9951, Y = Probit kill). Fish showed various abnormal behaviours upon exposure to propanil. Immediate reaction was erratic swimming and tendency to jump out of the test bowl. Others include: restlessness, un-coordinated movement, vertical swimming, air gulping, equilibrium loss, a period of quiescence and eventually death.

    Description: In recent times there has been an upsurge in the culture of Tilapia in Nigeria resulting in increased demand for the fingerlings which is hardly satisfied. This is due to increasing demand for table size tilapia as food fish and under-sized tilapia in the fish meal and fish canning industries in Nigeria. Collection of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings from the wild, to augment hatchery production, has been the practice and this is subject to environmental fluctuations. Multivariate regression and correlation analyses of accumulated data were used to investigate the effects of changes in water quality parameters on abundance of fingerlings of Tilapia guineensis in a brackishwater habitat in Lagos. Dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity and secchi transparency were found to be the most dominant factors affecting the abundance of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings in the Lagos lagoon. Peak period of abundance was closely associated with period of low salinity (0.50%o to 5.60%o), which coincided with the period of low transparency and low DO in the rainy season. The correlation analyses of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings with the water quality parameters yielded the following correlation coefficients (r)- 0.598; (salinity); -0.644 (transparency); -0.710 (DO); -0.566; (temperature) and 0.129 (pH). The abundance of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings in the Lagoon was ultimately defined by a suitable regression equation. This result is expected to optimize the collection of fingerlings of Tilapia guineensis from the wild and boost food fish security in Nigeria and elsewhere.

    Description: The concentration of heavy metals: Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Iron (Fe) and Zinc (Zn) in tissues of fin fish from a tidal fish farm in Calabar, South East Nigeria, was determined. The mean levels of heavy metals (~kgg-1) in gills, muscle tissues, liver and intestines of catfish were Pb: 2.39~c1.24; Cd: 0.87~c0.83; Fe: 3.96~c1.55; Zn: 8.15~c3.18. Mean levels in Tilapia were Pb: 0.035~c0.002; Cd: 0.61~c0.05; Fe: 1.09~c0.61; Zn: 2.17~c0.53. There was no significant difference (p〈0.05) in tissue concentrations of Pb and Cd whereas a significant difference (p〈0.05) was observed between Pb and Zn concentrations for both species of fish. Concentrations were also higher in liver, gills and muscle tissues than the intestines. Highest concentrations were observed in the liver and gills in both species. Generally, higher concentrations were observed in liver, gills and muscles of Catfish than in Tilapia. Concentrations of Pb and Fe in Catfish were significantly higher (p〈0.05) than the WHO limits, while Zn and Cd were lower. Tissue concentrations of all the metals in Tilapia were however, within the WHO recommended limits. The concentrations in all the fish tissues were significantly higher (p〈0.05) than in the surrounding water. The observed values in Catfish indicate environmental threat to the health of the fish and indeed the humans that consume them and therefore calls for environmental surveillance in the area

    Description: The poor nature of most Agricultural processing practices in Nigeria have had adverse effect on our environment, and our aquatic resources are of no exception. This study was conducted to ascertain the median lethal concentration of the effluent within the 96 hours period and also to ascertain the extent of damage on some of the histological characteristics of the Clarias gariepinus juveniles. Juveniles of the Clarias gariepinus (mean weight 30g) were exposed to varied concentrations of the locust bean effluent under the standard laboratory conditions. Data on mortality corresponding to the various concentrations were subjected to the probit and logit transformations and used to calculate the LC50 graphically. The result shows the toxicity of the locust bean effluent to Clarias gariepinus juveniles as 0.089mg/L (treatment 4) during the period of study. Exposure to both the acute and subletheal concentrations resulted in a number of physiological dysfunction of the test fish. Observation of the fish under the tests revealed unbalanced swimming patterns loss of reflex, rapid opercular movements and gasping for air. Histopathological examination of the gill and liver of the treated fish showed signs of damage, ranging from Hypoxia, lesions, necrosis, fibrosis cell stasis and hyperplasia at the sublethal levels.

    Description: A total number of 166 specimens of Mugil cephalus caught from Epe Lagoon (low brackish/ freshwater) were examined for food and feeding habit and biometric features from November 2006 ? May 2007. The food of the species consisted mainly of algae (Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and Pyrrophyta) and detritus. The size range of fish examined were 12.4 ? 27.0cm (standard length) while the weight ranged from 22.40 ? 308.00g. The mean values of the biometric characters of Mugil cephalus did not reflect wide variations. The population dominant cohort in the lagoon represents the harvestable and marketable representative for a sustainable fishery and is a strong indication of potential for freshwater culture of this marine species.

    Description: This study investigated the fish diversity of Eko ? Ende and Owalla reservoirs, which are within the Osun river system in South West, Nigeria with a view to document biodiversity information needed for conservation and sustainable fisheries. Fish samples were collected monthly from the two reservoirs for one year, using a battery of multifilament gill nets. The data collected from each reservoir was analyzed for fish diversity. Information obtained on the forage / carnivore (F/C) ratio of fishes in each reservoir was used in measuring and comparing the ecological balance of the reservoirs. The results showed that eighteen fish species representing 16 genera and 10 families were identified in Eko ? Ende, while 17 fish species in 15 genera and 10 families were identified in Owalla during the period of study. Sixteen species (representing 84.2% of the total number of fish species) were common to both reservoirs and they were both dominated by Cichlids. Eko ? Ende Reservoir had greater fish diversity than the Owalla Reservoir. Shannon ? Weiner (H') index of fish diversity from Eko ? Ende reservoir was 2.37 while that from Owalla reservoir was 2.10. The forage / carnivore (F/C) ratios of the fishes from the two reservoirs showed that Eko ? Ende reservoir (F/C = 1.98) is ecologically balanced, while Owalla reservoir (F/C = 0.92) is not Owalla reservoir had a higher population of Hemichromis fasciatus (a predatory species). This reservoir also had more intensive fishing activities than the smaller Eko ? Ende reservoir. The study concludes on the need for a participatory research to alleviate the problem of ecological imbalance of fish species in Owalla reservoir.

    Description: The fatty acid composition of oil extracted from the viscera of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus caught from a fish farm in New Bussa was investigated with a view to prove their usefulness. A total of 20 fatty acids were obtained out of which five were identified. Lauric, Palmitic and Stearic acids were the main saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids respectively. The principal acids in the polyunsaturated group were Oleic and Linoleic acids. C. gariepinus viscera is constituted of polyunsaturated fatty acids which make it a valuable pharmaceutical raw material rather than waste.

    Description: African snakehead, Parachanna obscura is being considered as an emerging aquaculture candidate in Nigeria. The species is very palatable and has a good fillet quality. Study was conducted on the proximate composition of the species from Cross River, Nigeria. Samples of snakehead were analyzed for protein, fat, moisture, crude fibre and ash contents. The protein content of the species ranged from 21.03-22.03 with mean value of 21.5%. The fat content ranged from 17.1-17.4% with a mean value of 17.2 %. Moisture content ranged from 51.1-52.0 % with a mean value of 51.7%. Ash and crude fibre contents were very low. The protein content of Parachanna obscura compares favourably with that of other members of the family Channidae. The fat content is exceptionally high, making the species a good healing and recuperating agent for post-natal and post-operation patients. We strongly recommend the culture of Parachanna obscura in Nigeria and its meal for growing children.

    Description: Study was conducted to investigate lipid profile and metabolites in deformed (lost one or both pectoral fins) and healthy (both pectoral fins intact) African mud catfish C. gariepinus using three groups of adults male and female with a mean weight and standard length of 822.17~c 48.75g and 42.55~c.26cm respectively. The fish were allotted in replicates to 5000m capacity tanks based on the presence or absence of pectoral fins. 1mL blood was drawn from caudal peduncle of each fish by means of disposable sterile syringe and centrifuged at 1000rpm for 20min at 40C. Cholesterol and total protein were determined using the cholesterol FL (CT F400CH) and total protein (TP 0500CH) kits. Serum albumin and globulin concentrations were determined following methods described by Tietz (1995) and Buckley et al., (1976) while total serum bilirubin concentration was measured as outlined by AACC (American Association of Clinical Chemistry). Results indicate that male fish had relatively higher amount of triglyceride while female fish had higher amounts of cholesterol, reduction in globulin of the deformed fish, reduction in the concentrations of albumin in healthy fish, increase in total protein and globulin levels and high urea concentrations. No total bilurubin was detected in any of the fish sampled thus an indication of good liver function which means there was no liver dysfunction or liver damage in the fishes. It is evident therefore that abnormal fish can still perform better if they are given intense management because of the variability in their blood constituents with the normal fishes which is used to assess their health is minimal.     Description: An experiment was carried out to find out the comparative effect of imported fish meal, blood meal and local fish waste based diets on the growth and survival of juvenile tilapia. (O. niloticus) in concrete tank. Four diets consisting of N.I.O.M.R. pelleted feed containing 40% CP, with imported fish meal, as the control and three others formulated with fresh, boiled cattle blood and local fish waste meal at 30% CP, were fed to juvenile tilapia with average initial weight of 55.24g in four treatments and four replicates in a completely randomized design. Result indicated final body weights of 100.83, 96.54, 98.4 and 86.82g and average body length of 18.47, 18.16, 18.4 and 18.14cm, for treatments 1 (control), 2 (fresh blood based diet), 3 (boiled blood based diet) and 4 (local fish waste meal based diet) respectively, with no significant difference between the treatments (P〉0.05). The same was also true for average daily weight gain of 0.41, 0.36, 0.31 and 0.28g. However, treatment 1 and 2 had better relative weight gain 93.69 and 80.21%, than 3 and 4 at 62.37 and 64.85% respectively, (P〈0.05). The survival was 100% in all treatments. Treatment 2 was more cost effective at N539.06/Kg fish, followed by 1 with N667.52. Treatments 3 and 4 had the highest at N698.20 and N718.60 per kg fish. The trial showed that tilapia feed processed with fresh cattle blood performed as well as imported fish meal, boiled blood and local fish waste and in addition was more cost effective.

    Description: The study assesses the enforcement of Inland Fisheries Regulations and Laws in Oyo State. This was done with a view to ascertaining the existence of regulations and laws that govern the inland waters of the state; the agents that are responsible to carry out the enforcement and the problems militating against the effectiveness of enforcement in the state, in order to provide relevant information for policy formulation and management of fishery resources. Information was gathered from secondary sources which include edicts for the state, journals and mass media reports. Personal interview with government fisheries officials and fishermen was also conducted. The research findings revealed that Oyo State has only fishing by-laws. The study also reveals that fishermen's co-operatives were the enforcement agents in the state. There was no record of arrest during the period of the study. Problems such as non- availability of surveillance and arresting equipment, lack of trained law enforcement fisheries officers were identified. The paper elaborates on possible management strategies of inland waters as a prelude towards increased fish production in the State.

    Description: Microfinance refers to loans, savings, insurance, transfer services and other financial products targeted at low-income people. Artisanal fishing is a crucial source of livelihoods in developing nations, particularly for low-income families in rural areas where job options are limited. Nigeria depends heavily on revenues from natural resources, especially oil hence income from fishing is particularly important to Nigeria. Aquaculture is also being practiced with a growth rate that has increased over the years. Sources of funding for the operators of these sectors of the economy who are mostly poor peasants will ensure sustainable production and income generation. Informal microfinance groups have existed before the advent of formal microfinance. Microfinance institutions in Nigeria operate in an environment that is dominated by commercial banks. However, their high deposit rate makes them attractive to the low income group. This paper examines the emergence of microfinance institutions, their contributions to fisheries and aquaculture and constraints to be overcome to enable them serve the fisheries and aquaculture sector better.

    Description: A study was conducted in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital with the objective to investigate if fish trading could be a tool of poverty alleviation and socio-economic enhancement of the status of women in the household. A total of 120 correctly completed, structured and pre-tested questionnaires, out of the 150 administered to respondents, were retrieved for data analyses. Demographic data of the traders showed that all the respondents were women whose ages ranged from 15 to above 45 years. The ages of 33-45 years constituted 33.3% of the respondents while the age bracket of between 27-32 years constituted 23.3%. Majority (73.3%) were married while 25% were single-headed households (divorced or widowed). The study revealed that most of the respondents (approximately 61%) were able to meet their family expenditure jointly with their spouses while 28.3% of the respondents met the financial responsibilities of their families solely from the profit. Access to credit was found to be a major limitation. The study further revealed that 86.7% of the respondents would like to continue with the business because they were satisfied with the profit accruable to them from the trade.

    Description: This paper begins with a review of policy issues on status of women’s fundamental human rights and the effects on their optimal participation in fisheries development. The focus of the paper is on the importance of women in fisheries activities within the fisheries industry. Issues pertaining to gender inequality in the rural communities affecting women in the fisheries sector, and solutions to overcome some of these issues are discussed. The degree of participation of women in the fisheries sector is an overall reflection of the cultures, the laws of the country and the priority given by the state to ensure gender equity. Generally, women in Nigeria, especially those from depressed fisheries households, participate actively in many fisheries activities, including aquaculture. However, the lower status accorded to women in many of the communities in Nigeria means that their contribution to fisheries is undervalued and unrecognized. Issues that need to be addressed with regards to participation of women in fisheries which include sensitivity to gender issues in fishery, improve living conditions, promote programs relating to women, reconsidering the practice of relating fishing rights to their right to speak and others are discussed in the paper The paper also looks at the possibilities of articulating measures in sensitizing the womenfolks through education, especially in knowing their fundamental human rights as specified by the UN’s articles, especially ability to access micro-credit in fisheries activities, the nature of loans and alternative strategies to tackle the problem of small-scale credit to women in fisheries development in the nation.

    Description: This study investigates the factors, which inhibit or facilitate adoption of fish farming technologies by individual fish farmers in Niger State. There was significant relationship between six of the ten variables investigated and these have contributed significantly (p〈0.05) towards predicting the adoption scores of the fish farmers. It is believed that proper assessment of these factors by researchers could be used by policy makers and executioners to improve adoption of fish farming innovations. Significant factors include farmers’ age, education, pond size, access to credit, sources of information and income level. Recommendations were made involving change agents and policy markers for future fisheries and aquaculture development in Nigeria.     Description: Ifiayong is a small local village market where economically and commercially important fin and shellfishes are landed. It is located very close to the Five Star and Ibom Le Meridian Hotels at Nwaniba beach. Women functioned as transporters, sorters, processors, financiers, distributors and marketers of the thirty-two finfish families, seven shellfish species together with three turtles (reptiles) encountered at the study site. Socio-economic survey revealed that ninety-four women modally aged 46-55years (34; 36.17%) participated in the fisheries and frequently communicated in Efik (40; 42.55%), and were mostly drop-outs (40; 40.56%) in educational level and polygamous (35; 38.30%). The modal family size was 11-15 persons (45; 47.87%) who invested N 41,000 - N 50,000 (28; 29.79%). Problems encountered by these women together with the corresponding solutions and appropriate recommendations proffered were highlighted with the aim of making Ifiayong a revenue generating and tourism centre for Uruan Local Council and Akwa Ibom State Government.

    Description: Information on sex composition of fish/shellfish species is important in determining reproductive potentials and estimating size structure of a given stock. Sustainable fisheries management options and policies usually rely on this aspect of the reproductive biology. In the present study, the sex ratios of three palaemonid shrimps, Macrobrachium macrobrachion, Macrobrachium vollenhovenii and Macrobrachium equidens were studied over an annual cycle with respect to gear type. Male: female relationship for M. macrobrachion caught with beach seine, pushnet and trap were 1:2.2, 1:2.1 and 1:2.15 respectively, while the M:F ratios for M. vollenhovenii were 1:1.27 (beach seine), 1:1.32 (pushnet) and 1:1.64 (trap). The overall M:F ratios during the annual cycle were 1:2.15 (M. macrobrachion), 1:1.47 (M. vollenhovenii), and 1:1.74 (M. equidens). The monthly sex ratios indicated that there were more females than males during the period, except for M. equidens which had a ratio of 1:0.78 in the month of August. This is advantageous for the stock dynamics of the species, especially if the males could mate with more than one female during any reproductive season.

    Description: Nigeria is a coastal state with a coastline of 853km which lies between 4o 10’ to 6o20’N and longitude 2o 45’ to 8o 5’ E. The Nigerian coastline stretches from the Western border with the Republic of Benin to the eastern border with the Cameroon Republic. Some of the coastal characteristics which are of importance to the Nigerian inshore demersal fisheries are the presence of thirty-six estuaries and the prominent Niger Delta which provides suitable habitat for the penaeid shrimps, finfish and other living marine resources. Nigeria has a wide variety of shellfish resources ranging from the molluscs such as ark clams (Senila senilis), cockles costatum), periwinkle (Tympanotonus fuscatus) to the crustaceans which includes the penaeidae (shrimps), palaemonidae (prawns), portunidae (swimming crabs) and palinuridae (lobsters). Estimated potential yield for shellfishes is 51,760 metric tonnes. Shrimps and prawns have the highest commercial importance with production estimate between 10,000 to 15,000mt. More than half of this figure is exported to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with shrimp market valued at US $8.6 billion. Nigeria generated about US $54million in 2005 from export of shrimps and prawns alone. This figure decreased to about US $38million in 2007 due to harassment by sea pirates and militant groups thus decreasing production from 13,767mt in 2006 to an alarming 5,995mt in 2007. However more research needs to be done to ascertain the true potential yield and environmental carrying capacity of the Nigerian shellfisheries to determine the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) so as to prevent over exploitation and consequently the destruction of the fishery. Research should also be carried out on other shellfish resources such as crabs, oysters, periwinkles and lobsters as appreciable income could be earned from their sales and export.

    Description: Culture trial of the Tiger Shrimp (Peneaus monodon) was carried out in one of the grow-out concrete tanks at Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, Victoria Island, Lagos. A total of 264 post larvae of P. monodon (PL 30) produced at the Institute’s shrimp hatchery complex were used for the experiment which lasted for 157 days. Coppens Catco feed of 0.8 - 1.2mm size was used to feed the post larvae throughout the duration of the experiment. The results showed that the shrimps grew from an initial mean body weight of 1.763g at stocking to 19.538g at the end of the experiment. The daily growth rate was 0.113g/day while specific growth rate was 1.532 %. Food Conversion Ratio (FCR) was 3.362 while survival rate was 90%. The study has shown that P. monodon can be successfully cultured in concrete tanks. However further studies aimed at improving growth rate will be undertaken.

    Description: This study evaluated the effect of varying smoking durations of 6, 6.5, 7 and 7.5 hours on the microbiological quality and percentage moisture content of cold-smoked Atlantic Cod, Gadus morhua. The fish sample were cold-smoked using the traditional drum oven. Four batches of the smoked fish were stored in metal baskets at ambient temperatures for a period of 12 days and assessed for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli loads, Mould count, Total Plate Count and Total Coliform Count. Analyses of the smoked fish samples were carried out at the initial stage (day 0) and subsequently every alternate days (i.e. days 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12). Significant variations (P 〈 0.05) were obtained for all the microbial counts on the four smoked fish samples. The best microbiologically stable cold-smoked samples were that smoked at the longest duration of 7.5 hours. This produced the least mean microbial load range of TPC (1.50 x 103 - 2.00 x 105cfu/g); TCC varied from 0.0MPN/g to 12.0 MPN/g ; Mould count (1.32 x103 - 2.55 x 105 cfu/g) and Staphylococcus aureus (3.0 x103 - 1.35 x 105cfu/g) while percentage moisture content ranged between 25.3% to 15.2%. All the samples tested negative to Escherichia coli.

    Description: Growth (Percentage weight gain, Specific growth rate , total body length), survival rate and condition factor of Heteroclarias fry fed shell free Artemia, cultured Moina micrura and mixture of both as starter feed were investigated. 30 individual fry were placed in a 4-litre plastic bowl in three treatments of 3 replicates for 25 days in Fish Hatchery. Individual water quality parameters (water pH, temperature, Dissolved oxygen, total Alkalinity and carbon dioxide) monitored for each treatment were not significantly different (p〉0.05) from each Heteroclarias fry fed live M. micrura had the highest percentage weight gain (496.03%), Specific growth rate (3.09), percentage survival rate (88.83%) and condition factor (39.75) but these results were not significant different (P〉0.05) from those of shell free Artemia except those of condition factor. Shell free Artemia and Live M. micrura combination was observed to have the lowest fry Percentage weight gain (428.30%),. specific growth rate(2.54), % survival rate (85.50), condition factor(24.39) and total body length(1.52cm). The highest total body length was observed in shell free Artemia although not significantly different (p〉0.05) from others. The implication of using cultured live M. micrura instead of shell free Artemia as starter diet for Heteroclarias hatchlings at the critical stage of development are discussed

    Description: The effect of substituting soybean meal with raw sunflower and sesame seed meal was evaluated using haematological indices of Clarias gariepinus fed the diets containing sunflower and sesame seed meal. Seven isonitrogeneous and isocaloric diets containing sunflower and sesame seed meal replacing soybean meal at a rate of 15, 30 and 45% were prepared. A diet without replacement of soybean meal served as control. The result of fish fed test diets showed significant (P〈0.05) difference over the fish fed control diet with respect to PCV and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Fish fed control diet had the lowest Hb, PCV, WBC, RBC, MCV, MCHC, ESr. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the fish fed control diet and test diets with respect to MCH, MCHC, ESr, Neutrophil, Monocytes, Eusinophils and Lymphocytes. Hence it can be concluded that the haemotological parameter of Clarias gariepinus is not significantly (P〉0.05) changed with increase dietary inclusion of raw sunflower and sesame seed meal.

    Description: Feeding trial was conducted in static water to assess the growth of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings fed different inclusion levels of Mucuna seed meal (MSM). Raw MSM was used at 10%, 20% and 30% inclusion levels and the performance of fish fed these diets was compared with the fish fed soybean-based diet which contained 40%protein. All diets were prepared to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric. A four by six factorial experiment with three replicates using ten fish each of average initial weight of 6.6g was carried out. Daily fish ration of five percent body weight was administered two times for twelve weeks. The specific growth rate (SGR) in diet 1 (control) was significantly (p〈0.05) higher than the other dietary groups and worsens as inclusion level increased similar trend was also observed in the food conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER). The significantly lower growth performance of fish fed diets containing raw MSM might be due to the presence of anti-nutritional factors present raw MSM. The possibility of improving this trend through processing should be investigated.

    Description: Clarias gariepinus juveniles 6.35 ~C 0.22 g weight were fed five different commercial diets for 105 days to determine growth rates. Diets were hand distributed in triplicate groups of 30 fish once daily. The diets used were Coppens, Multifeed, Eurogold, Vittal and Ajanla feeds. At the end of the experiment, the final mean weight for Coppens, Multifeed and Eurogold were 181.54 ~c 0.63 g, 179.92 ~c 0.95 g and 139.92 ~c 0.26 g respectively, while final mean weight for Vital and Ajanla were 110.11 ~c 0.23 g and 119.03 ~c 0.35 g respectively. The statistical analysis of the results showed that there were significant differences (P〈0.05) in the mean final weights. Also there was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the mean final weight between Coppens and Multifeed. The specific growth rates (SGR) were 3.19% day-1 3.18 % day-1 and 2.94% day-1 for Coppens Multifeed and Eurogold respectively and 2.71% day-1 and 2.78% day-1 respectively for Ajanla and Vital. There were significant differences (P〈0.05) in SGR among treatments and no significant difference (P〉0.05) between SGR of Coppens and Multifeed. Based on these findings, it was concluded that feed with macronutrient combinations of 45% CP, 12% crude fat, crude fiber, 1.5%, Ash 9.5% promoted better growth rates in C. gariepinus juveniles as compared with other combinations.

    Description: Clarias gariepinus (0.73 ~c 0.01g) and Heterobranchus longifilis fingerlings (0.67 ~c 0.01g) were fed five isonitrogenous diets of about 40% crude protein, with varying levels (0-100%) of palm grub meal for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, C. gariepinus and H. longifilis fingerlings fed 25% palm grub inclusion diet had the highest weight gain (5.30g and 4.05g respectively), relative (726.0% and 595.6%) and specific (1.09% and 1.00%) growth rates while those fed 100% palm grub inclusion diet showed least growth; weight gain (2.68g and 2.15g), relative (367.1% and 316.2%) and specific (0.80% and 0.45%) growth rates respectively. Food conversion and protein efficiency were also best in fingerlings fed 25% palm grub meal diet (0.70 and 1.35 for C. gariepinus; 0.75 and 1.35 for H. longifilis respectively) with decreasing efficiency as palm grub inclusion level increased in the diets. The differences in the growth and nutrient utilization of the fingerlings on the various diets were generally insignificant (p〉0.05) above 25% inclusion level of palm grub. The study showed that palm grub can be used to completely replace fish meal in mudcatfish diets. However, for optimal growth and nutrient utilization, 25% level of replacement of fish meal with palm grub meal is most adequate in C. gariepinus and H. longifilis fingerlings diets.

    Description: The study was carried out to investigate the lysine requirement and its effect on the body composition of Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings. Two hundred and seventy fingerling O. niloticus (9.01 -11.09g) were reared in 35L plastic troughs. Six diets were formulated, containing 35% crude protein. The diets were formulated with ingredients deficient of lysine (Groundnut cake -3.23g lysine/100g diet and guinea corn -1.9g lysine/100g diet) for O. niloticus having whole body content of 7.51g lysine/100g protein. The diets consist of a basal diet (Diet I, no added lysine), while the test diets (II, III, IV and V) had 4.56g, 6.87g, 7.30g, 7.41g lysine/100g protein respectively. The reference diet was made of Clupeids (mixture of Pellonula afzeliusi and Physalia pellucida), groundnut cake and guinea corn but no added lysine (5.37g lysine/100g protein). The fish were fed twice daily (0900 and 18.00hrs) at 3% body weight for 56 days. There was significant difference in the mean weight gain and food conversion efficiency (P〈0.05). The four levels of lysine resulted in quadratic responses (P〈0.05). Calculation using regression equations from the relationship between the specific growth rate, weight gain and lysine levels show that lysine requirement for fingerling was 7.12g/100g protein respectively. The requirement of O. niloticus for lysine is 7.12g lysine/100g protein.

    Description: A study was undertaken to analyse and compare with manufacturers’ declaration the nutrient content of some feeds available in Nigeria through proximate analysis. The commercial fish feeds collected from the markets were Adolf Calyx, Coppens, Dizengoff and Durante. Proximate composition such as moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, ash, fibre and NFE (nitrogen free extract) were analysed. In general, there was variation between analysed and company declared nutrient contents of different feeds especially the protein and lipid content of the feeds.     Description: The study examined the opinion of fishermen and fish buyers on middlemen of Doro Baga fish market. 240 respondents were used as samples with the aid of structured questionnaire, using stratified random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data obtained. The study revealed that majority of the fishermen (75%) highly depend on these selling brokers to sell their fish for them because their financial support comes from the selling brokers, moreover they do not have a stand in the market. Among the fish buyers, especially those that buy directly for consumption, see the brokers as people that create confusion during transaction. But 55% of the fish buyers believed that brokers keep the business flowing through their support of the fishermen. While the major problem of the fishermen with the selling brokers is getting the loan from the brokers especially when the fisherman is new in the area or business and on the other side, brokers only give the fish buyers grace of two to three days when they don’t have money, after that the broker would sell the fish to another buyer. These problems can be solved when a strong relationship is established between the fishermen, selling brokers, and fish buyers, or when the government intervenes by giving loans to the fishermen.

    Description: The paper examined gender and fisheries of Lake Kainji, Nigeria. The study highlights socio economic characteristics of women involved in Kainji Lake fisheries, important issues about gender and fisheries. It reveals that the categories of women in the Kainji Lake fisheries are in the middle age of 31 to 40 years with very low educational background. It also indicates that fish processing has been the most prominent activity of women in fisheries of Lake Kainji and constitute about 60 percent of the women. The study concludes that women play significant roles in all aspects of fisheries in Lake Kainji. Importantly, women’s roles span reproduction and production.

    Description: In the study and understanding of fish biology, characterization and morphology, the length-weight relationship is of great importance. The genus Hydrocynus, is of high economic importance to the fisheries of Lake Kainji. This study investigated their length-weight relationship to establish the growth pattern of species within this genus. The ‘b’ values of the length-weight relationship for these species are less than 3. There was negative allometric growth (b〈3) for all samples of the Hydrocynus species. The correlation coefficients (r) are 0.9713 and 0.9888, for Hydrocynus forskali and H.brevis respectively. Condition factors ranged from 1.313 for H. forskali to 1.431 for H. brevis.

    Description: Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production systems in the world, Nigeria inclusive with the bulk of its output currently being produced within developing countries and with expectations for aquaculture sustainable food security and poverty alleviation. However, poverty which is a social condition characterised by the inadequacy of access to basic human needs for the maintenance and socially acceptable minimum standards of living is still prevalent. One of the major obstacles to achieving the objectives of poverty reduction through aquaculture is the inadequate credit facilities to boost production. The study therefore, this study investigates the sources and uses of micro-credit in poverty alleviation among fish farmers in Osun state, Nigeria. A two stage random technique was used to select 137 respondents from the three Osun State Agricultural Development Programme (ADPs) zones. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data on demographic characteristics, Micro-credit sources and use, occupational, income and fish production data. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, FGT and logit model. The result shows that both formal and informal micro-credit sources were used in the area studied with high interest rate militating against the adequate use of some of the micro-credit sources. Poverty alleviation through micro-credit use will increase efficiency through the use of modern effective and efficient technology leading to greater production. The policies aimed at making micro-credit readily available should be focused on to alleviate poverty among fish farmers

    Description: Over 200 hatcheries of fish exist in Nigeria with at least two hatcheries in each state of the federation but unfortunately over 50 percent are either non-functional or function far below their optimum production capacities. Also about 85 percent of the non-functional hatcheries belong to the government (-either federal, state, local government or institution). The associated problems with the non-functional hatcheries include: inadequate funding, poor maintenance of hatcheries facilities, high cost of feed inputs, in adequate infrastructure, differential growth and cannibalism in catfishes which result in poor fingerling harvest, low attitude and lack of commitment to government work. Privatization/ownership options are considered the best options for this paper and clues to solve the problems mentioned above through privatization are presented. Problems with privatization and private investment are also discussed. It was advised that in case the existing hatcheries are put in to full production, the national demand for fingerlings which is placed at 4.3 billion annually could be met with ease. Fingerlings production in the hatchery as the quickest revenue yielding aspect of fish farming (with high internal rate of returns and short pay back period) capable of attracting revenue within 2-3 mouths of a breeding exercise are emphasized.

    Description: The paper traced aquacultural development in Nigeria to the colonial period in 1950s with fish farming in tilapias during which more than 200 small scale subsistence level ponds were built with some growth continuing in the rural areas. There was a bloom in farming of catfishes in 2000. The interest shown by private fish farmers has been identified as a propelling factor for aquacultural development in Nigeria. The development of private fish hatcheries has been another factor leading to the growth of aquaculture. The paper noted that social capital and its development either directly or indirectly can be identified as contributing to the success of the sectors. The increasing profit from aquaculture has led to fish farmers increasing beyond 5000 tonnes in 2009. The paper highlighted the numerous advantages which led to the expansion of the industry in Nigerian villages.

    Description: Changes in biochemical properties of freshwater prawn stored with two ice conditions Without Direct Contact with Ice (DCI) and Without Direct Contact with Ice (WCI) for day 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 were investigated. Proximate composition defined in terms of moisture increased for the DCI as storage days increases but relatively constant with treatments with WCI. Values of TVB-N (mgN/100g) in prawn stored with DCI had inverse relationship with storage days but increased with storage days in the WCI. Changes in the values of ash and crude protein were relatively constant as the storage days increased in both treatments. Ice treatments recorded little changes in between storage days for fats. Values of NPN mgN/100g decreased with days of storage with DCI but increased as the storage increased with WCI. These results obtained in this study showed that ice storage may have contrasting values and importance on the biochemical properties of the freshwater prawn.

This is made as these are guidelines against which Fisheries programmes, now being proliferated in many Nigerian tertiary institutions, can be evaluated for possible accreditation. The critique shows that some courses are highly under-weighted e.g. “Aquatic Flora and fauna” as a 2 credit unit. There is a high degree of overlap between courses. Some are not clearly and sharply delineated, defined or described. Staff needs are not defined or described. Staff needs are not defined in terms of core course areas of specialization. Limnology & Oceanography have their descriptions restricted to physico ? chemical features and not viewed in the desired comparative perspective. Suggestions are made on a wider listing of equipment, field laboratory, and library need to sharpen the NUC guideline. A review committee is recommended.

    Description: The paper traced the evolution of piracy and pointed out that the fishing industry in Nigeria alone has recorded over 15 deaths and loss of vessels, equipments, fish/fishery products valued over N3 billion to these attacks between 2006 and April 2009. The paper further highlighted that between February 2009 and April 2010 the fishing industry has recorded about 80 attacks. These have affected the fishing industry which operated over 250 registered trawlers in 2003/2004 which has now been reduced to 150 trawlers. To ameliorate this problem the paper highlighted steps taken in dealing with the menace of piracy. The paper concluded that good laws are a necessary pre-condition for the achievement of maritime security. However, they will only be effective if there is the political will and the practical capacity among the government, relevant agencies and stakeholders.

    Description: The Taham dam reservoir has been established in order to provide drinking water of Zanjan population as far as 15 km in a mountain region at 1900 meter altitude with a 317 ha surface area. This study was conducted on biotic and a biotic factors in order to recognize of aquaculture possibility within drinking considerations. The results showed the less abundance of phytoplankton with 2 million/l. where abundant of zooplankton was 266 /l. Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta belong to phytoplankton and Rotatoria belong to zooplankton were dominated among identified plankton phylum. There were identified 45 and 32 genus of phytoplankton and zooplankton respectively. There were identified 5 groups of benthos that Tubificidae, Hirudina had the most frequency, and the biomass of benthos was varied from 1.1 to 23.7 g /m^2. The ichtiology survey showed presence of 6 species in the lake that Alburnoides bipunctatus, Capoeta capoeta, Leuciscus cephalus were the most abundance in the catch. L. cephalus was recorded with the maximum size of 870 g while the most frequent weight class was 150 450 g for C. capoeta,, L. cephalus . Diet survey showed the adequate feeding of fishes in lake also the observation of leech in trout guts was very considerable. The reproduction study displayed that a partial of matured fishes were succeed in breeding. Leuciscus cephalus have been known as a typical species with commercial size and high abundance which will be needed a fisheries management in Taham Lake to sustainable exploitation. The hidrochemical results indicated low nutrients values while total nitrogen was varied from 0.32 to 0.61 mg/l. and the Chl-a was varied from 7.9 to 25.9 μg/l. The oxygen amount was 4.5 to 8.4 mg/l even in 65 meter depths. Total hardness average was about 149 mg/l where the Ca and Mn were measured in a low values. Trophic model in Taham lake showed the early stage of mesotrophy while other lakes and wetlands in north of Iran had been progressed in mesotrophic level.

    Description: This study has been carried out to determine the possibility of producing Gattan fish (Barbus xanthopterus) brooders in captivity condition. For this reason during in year 2004-2005, 600 specimen of Gattan in three pond and in 2008, from two local point shilat and research center, 200 specimen in two ponds were placed. The area of each pond was 1800 square meters. In the first period of rearing, total weight and total length of nearly two years old brooders reached to 989 g and 44 cm respectively. All of the fishes were male (except one case) and they had become mature. In second rearing period, 27 percent of shilat specimens and 42 percent of research center specimens were female. In 22 months old fishes, the males and females of shilat specimens reached to mean weight 716 and 658 g and mean length 382 and 365 cm respectively. Also, the male and females of research center specimens reached to mean weight was 1195 and 11064 g and mean length 443 and 425 cm respectively, when they were 22 months old. The absolute and specific growth rate in two rearing periods showed ascending trend and the 100 percent of brooders were survived. The male fishes were matured in 2 years old and the mature female fishes were not observed. The brooders response to pituitary extract in research center specimens was found to be more than shilat specimens.

    Description: Marine polychaete worms living in different beds from coastal areas, so different cultures can be different effects on their development. The evaluation of this research initially, marine polychaete worms were collected in low tidal sea areas from Gulf Persian coast in Bushehr. During several stages of sampling do more than 2000 pieces of worm were taken and then transferred to Bandarga Shrimp Research Station (Iran Shrimp Research Center). So based on an observation the desired species identification (Perinereis nuntia). Then 400 pieces worm selected and transferred to tanks maintain immature worm (fiberglass tanks with dimensions of 2×2×0.5 m with 15 cm sand on floor). The results showed that even the worms (P. nuntia) in vitro reached sexual maturity able to spawn in captivity conditions and were absolute fecundity of 16010 ± 17630 eggs. After incubation eggs, larval culture into the plastic tank with 70 cm diameter, larval (1.5 to 2 mm) were introduced with density 2000 (pieces/m^2). In this research used to three different beds (tidal, filled with water all of time and wet bed) with three different food types (food shrimp, seaweed and vegetable waste), so there were 9 experimental treatments. All experimental treatments harvested and estimate production in each of them after 270 days. The seaweed tidal treatment with amount of 21.17 g/m^2 had best results and the all of wet treatments with 0 g/m^2 was the lowest production. Compare of beds showed that the tidal treatments have significant difference with other beds in growth factors (e.g. mean weight, survival percentage and total production) (P〈0.05). And for effect of food kind on growth factors, the result of difference foods in tidal treatment were analyzed. According this mater any treatments have no significant difference together in growth factors (e.g. mean weight, survival percentage and total production) (P〉0.05).

    Description: During the years 1382-83, some biological aspects of three species Tiger-toothed Croaker, Otolithes ruber, Javelin grunter, Pomadasys kaakan, Black Pomfret, Parastromateus niger, have been investigated in the Oman Sea along Sistan-O-Baluchistan province. Based on the frequency of developed maturity stages (IV, V), a prologed spawning activity extending from August to March was determined for O.ruber, and the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) suggests two peaks:the minor one in October and the major one in March-April. Comparison of Hepatosomatic Index (HI) and Condition factor (Kn) with the peak spawning indicated a reverse relationship. According to length at first maturity (Lm50%= 40cm) and exploitation of fish at length 42cm above, the stretched optimum mesh size of nets was calculated to be 100mm. On analysis of stomach food item, fish group dominated (80%), which of them Anchovy accounted for 40% of the total frequency. Comparison of mean length between the years 1374-75 and 1382-83 showed 4cm in decrees. Population dynamics parameters were determined through length based modals and the exploitation rate was estimated to be E=0.6, suggesting high level exploitation. The usal streched mesh size of nets(constructed from multifilament webbing) for capturing O.ruber were less than the proposed optimum mesh size of nets, indicating 78% of the total landings were smaller than Lm50%. Total landings in 1381 have increased up to 15% when compared to those of the year 1376. Despite the decrease of total efforts (Panel.day) by 37%, the mean value CPUE has increased up to 82%. Regarding Pomadasys kaakan species, a year-round spawning activity has been observed, with two peaks: A major one in April and an aminor one in September. As those of O.ruber species, there was an inverse relationship between HI and Kn with the peak spawning activity. Based on the length at first maturity (Lm50% = 44cm) and capturing fish of the length at 46cm and above, the stretched optimum mesh size of nets was calculated to be 149.6mm. According to analysis of stomach contents, fish group accounted for 35% of the groups studied, which of them , Largehead hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus linnaeus, constituted 52% of the total frequency. In addition to estimation of population dynamics, the exploitation rate was estimated to be E= 0.49. Majority of the species catch was made by mesh size of nets used for O.ruber of which 133mm mesh size accounted for the level (30%). Information on length distribution showed that 60% of the total fish landed was below Lm50%. Total landings in 1381 decreased to 10% in comparison to 1376.Total fishing efforts and CPUE also decreased to 33% and 24% respectively. For parastromateus Niger, There was a long period spawning activity from March to December, with two peaks: A major one in August and a minor one in March. According to Lm50% (39cm) and catching of fish 39cm above, the stretched optimum mesh size of nets was calculated as 167.7mm. Based on stomach contents, ring-shaped worms and larval shrimp equally made 29% of the total frequency showing the highest contribution. Comparison of mean length indicated 3cm in decrease in 1382-83 when compared to 1374-75. Population dynamics parameters were estimated and the exploitation rate was estimated to be E = 0.54. The usual stretched mesh size of nets for P. niger was 146mm and 81% of the total fish landed were smaller than Lm50%.In 1381,total catch of the species increased four and a half-fold in comparison to 1376, while total efforts decreased up to 28% and CPUE increased two and a half-fold.

    Description: A survey on parasitic infections on Barboid fishes of South- west of Iran (Khouzestan province) were done during Spring 2002 to Autumn 2004. Altogether 296 specimens from 5 different fish species were examined. The fishes were collected from five stations of Karoun River (Ahwaz-Goulestan, Molasani, Dez Dam), Karkheh River (Hamidia Dam) and Shadgan Lagoon. The fishes transported alive to the laboratory where they measured and weighted. Then they were killed by cutting the spinal cord. According to the results of this study 22 different parasites were revealed, 15 of then detected to the species level and 7 of them to the genus level. The metazoans are as follows: The monogenea, are Dactylogyrus onchoratus, D.persicus. Two digeneans: Diplostomum spathaceum, Asymphilodora sp. Five nematods: Rhabdochona denudata, Philometra karuensis, Philometra sp., Psudocapilaria tomentosa Contracecum larvae sp. and only one acanthocephalus, Neoechinorhynchus. Three protozoans are: Ichtyophthirius multifiliis, Trichodina sp., Goussia sp., Balantidium sp. And Myxozoans: Myxobolus persicus M. karuni M. nodulointestinalis, M iranicus, M.mesopotamia, M. pfief eri, Myxobolus sp., Myxidium rhodei, Myxidium pfiefferi. Histopathological investigation of some parasites was done as well. Pathologacal potential of M. nodulointestinalis and M. pfiefferi were revealed. According the results of this study three new parasites and eleven new hosts for Iranian freshwater fishes and three new host for three Myzoxoans were introduced.

    Description: This project was carried out in 2000 to determine the effect of attractant diet on growth and survival rate of Penaeus semisulcatus in fifteen treatment each with three replication were applied for 45 days. The results indicate that 40I B, 40II and T foods had highest effect on mean weight which were 0.1556, 0.1492 and 0.1164 grams respectively. The yield data were compared with regression which showed us the positive correlation coefficient between yield and food consumption was 0.75.

    Description: This research was conducted for evaluation of adaptation and growth rate of beluga (Huso huso) in brackish water earth pond in Yazd Province. In order to select the best density for beluga culture in brackish water earth pond, beluga with initial average weight of 21g were stocked 0.4 and 0.8 peace/m2 of earth pond with 1000 m^2 in area. Water resource was a semi deep well with initial temperature and salinity of 24 and 11.5 g/l respectively. During the time of culture, water temperature, pH, DO and salinity were 12-27, 8.1-9.4, 4.5-8.9 mg/l and 11.5-13 g/l in respectively. Culture period was 240 days. Results showed that growth performance of fishes in studied treatments had no significant difference.

    Description: Growth experiments were designed and conducted in several phases in order to determine the most suitable starter diet, to determine the effects of different levels of protein and energy and also to determine the effects of different ratios of carbohydrate to fat on growth and body composition in farmed Huso huso from the larval stage up to the marketing stage. Phase one Growth experiments were conducted in a random statistical design to compare growth trends in H. huso larvae (mean weight 105.02 ± 0,02 mg) without being adapted to formulated diets. Experiments were conducted in fibreglass tanks (500 litre capacity) under similar culture conditions. Four replicates were run for each experiment. Larvae were fed four types of formulated diets (Diet A=100 % formulated diet produced in the International sturgeon Research Institute, Diet B=formulated diet imported from Holland, Diet C= formulated diet imported from France, Diet D= a mixture of Diet A + 10% gammarus) 8 times a day to satiation for a period of 49 days. The results obtained were compared with those obtained for the control group that was fed live food (Daphnia and Artemia). Mean water temperature during the experimental period was 18.52 ± 0.48 °C and mean dissolved oxygen was 7.35 ± 0.18 mg/l. The first signs of food granules were observed in the guts of the larvae after 12 h of the first feeding. All experimental groups were adapted to granulated diets on day 3 to day 5. In the beginning of the experimental period the larvae showed a no normal distribution (P 0.05) in terms of weight and length. However significant differences were observed in the end of the experimental period among the different groups studied in terms of growth, specific growth rate and food efficiency (P 0.05). Growth in group B and D were significantly higher than that in other groups except for the control group (P 0.05). It may thus be concluded that the olfactory organs of larvae took to Diet B (may be due to its composition) and to the diet D (because of its odour, texture and suitable flavour) more readily than other diets. At the end of the experimental period, maximum survival (98%) belonged to the control group. Survival rate in Group B and Group D was 90 % and 86.5%, respectively (P 0.05). Minimum survival belonged to fish fed Diet A (29.7%) and Diet C (45.5%). With regard to the adaptability of larvae to formulated diets, survival rates and growth and development in larvae we may conclude that the effects of different formulated diets on growth in larvae can be conducted on larvae with a mean body weight between 100 to 120 mg. In this weight class the digestive system and olfactory organ are fully developed and play a vital role in searching for food particles.

    Description: The aim of this research was to identify fish species distributed in the water resources located at West- Azarbaijan province. Sampling was done seasonally, from 14 sampling sites in main branches of different rivers including Aras, Zangmar, and Ghator. Fish samples caught with different tools, fixed in 10 % formalin, and finally transferred to the laboratory for biological investigations. The identified fish were 25 species belonging to 8 fish family comprising of Cyprinidae, Balitoridae, Cobitidae, Siluridae, percidae, poecilliidae, Gobiidae, Salmonidae. Among them, cyprinidae family had the highest percentage of diversity. There were 2 species from Balitoridae and 1 species from the rest of other family.

    Description: Hamoun fish, Schizothorax zarudnyi, is an indigenous species of the eastern waters of Iran, which is exclusively found in this region. However recently drought occurrence in the Chahnimeh reservoirs (a semi natural water body) making them vulnerable to extinction. As an appropriate action to address this problem and according to the 3 side contract between Italian Government – UNDP - Islamic republic of Iran Government and the Italian government financial support to reduce poverty in the Province of Sistan-Baluchestan through the reinforcement and dissemination of aquaculture activities the project was developed at the Hamoun Research Unit by the Chahbahar Fisheries Research Center to record the breeding normative of 1 g weight larvae for restocking and other researching purposes. 331 broodstocks of the indigenous species Shizothorax zarudnyi weighing 800-2450 g were collected from the Chahnimeh reservoirs in early autumn, 2006. From 5/3/2007 (the project is supported and communicated on 2010) , Ovulation was stimulated with three stimulators; pituitary extract (3-6 mg kg-1 body weight), GnRH-A (20-30 mg kg-1 body weight) and anti dopamine (10-15 mg kg-1 body weight) that was given in 2-3 doses to breeders. Of 169 injected breeders , some were injected On mid March of 2007 (12-13 ºC water temperature) responded to the injection 25% ,while the rest were injected On April of 2008 (14-16 ºC water temperature) responded to the injection 65%. In the present project of 167 breeders 82 were female and 87 male. Totally 30 female breeders released their eggs in different stages. 20 female breeders released their eggs completely, 3 breeders released half of their eggs and 7 released 1/3 of their eggs. The male breeders just injected in the final dose of hormontrapy and all were ready for releasing sperms however the ovulation in female breeders occurs between 353-428 h ºC and after the final dose of injection. Ripe eggs were stripped from the females and fertilization was done by the dry method. Fertilized eggs were transferred to veis incubators and troughs. Incubation period for eggs differs and larvae hatch out after about 910 days at an average water temperature of 12.5 °C. Maintained at 13-14 °C, complete absorption of yolk sac in Shizothorax zarudnyi larvae occurred after 5-8 days. Larvae were fed with a mixture of powdered milk and egg yolk in this stage followed by decapsulated Artemia cysts and nauplii of Artemia and then on formulated starter diets used for carps. Because the ponds were not ready, larvae were maintained in troughs for about ten days before they were transferred to two 1200 m2 earthen ponds where they reached a body weight of about 1 g. They were then handed over to the Iranian Fisheries department in the region. Larvae were fed with the starter feed SFCO in the earthen ponds. About 350 thousand larvae were stocked in two earthen ponds. Based on the results of present study and other studies we may conclude that artificial breeding in Schizothorax can be successfully achieved at 14-16 ºC in flow through systems using hormone therapy (combination of GnRha and anti dopamine) and larvae could be easily cultured in earthen ponds. However this species exhibits lower growth rates as compared to carps its high expenses could have an important role in economical feasible.

    Description: This study was conducted in order to optimizing of the biological condition and enhancing of the harvest efficiency for cultured shrimps of Guater site. Experimental design was consisted of three treatments and each treatment with three replications (totally 9 ponds with 600 m^2 area for each pond). After preparing and watering of ponds, the ponds was stocked with shrimp post larves in a density of 0.007±0.001 g (or 20 numbers per m^2) per m^2. After 35 days, the fingerlings of gray mullet were released to shrimp ponds in densities of 0/100 m^2 (T1/), 2/100 m^2 (T2) and 4/100 m^2 (T3). During experiment, the physicochemical parameters of water (temperature, O_2, pH, water transparency and salinity) were measured daily for two times (morning and afternoon). Also, the nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate and silicate concentrations and BOD5 as well as chlorophyll (a), phytoplanktons and zooplanktons were measured every 15 days one time. To determine the organic values of the bottom sediment of the ponds, monthly sampling was conducted. Health status of shrimps was investigated monthly too. Growth rate, mean weight, survival value, Food conversion ratios (FCR) and total shrimp harvest (Kg) were measured after 107 days rearing in ponds. ANOVA analysis showed significant differences between treatments. The highest (212 Kg, 3533 Kg; weight mean was18.4 g for each shrimp) and lowest (187 Kg, 3116 Kg; weight mean was16.23 g for each shrimp) of harvested shrimps were yielded in T3 and T1 respectively. There was not significant differences between treatments in terms of survival rate (P〉0.05). After 107 days rearing, the highest (1.27 0.2) and lowest (1.2 0.1) of FCR were observed in T_3 and T_1 respectively. Although, there were no significant differences between T_2 and T_3 in ammonia, O_2, Total organic material, pH and BOD5, but, T_2 and T_3 had significant differences with T_1 in these parameters. In this study, 27 genus of phytoplanktons belonged to Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), blue-green algal (Cyanophyceae) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae) were identified. Diatoms with 20 genus had more abundance than dinoflagellates (6 genus) and blue-green algal (1 genus). Also, 7 orders of zooplanktons including copepod, mollusks, nauplius of crustacean and rhizopoda were identified. Health investigation of T1 (without shrimp) showed more pathogenic pollution (parasites and bacteria) than in treatments with shrimp. In this regard, among bacteria, the Vibrio genus (V.Alginoliticus and V.Fluvialis) had more abundance and among parasites zoothamnium sp and Epistylis sp were identified which more abundance was for zoothamnium sp. In conclusion, our results concluded that mixed culturing of white shrimp and grey mullet in optimum densities is possible and is caused more production of shrimp.

    Description: Present project was conducted in shrimp farm located in east of Chabahar in Sistan and Balouchestan province.Twentieth sampling stations at three locations (i.e. 2 stations in supply channel,13 stations in drainage channel and 5 stations in Gwatar Gulf) were selected to determine physical and chemical factors such as; temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate and biological parameters for example Chlorophyll a, phytoplankton and zooplankton. Sampling was conducted once a month from March 2003 until January 2004. The results revealed different bioenvironmental area in the three locations (i.e. supply channel, drainage channel and Gwatar Gulf) over the study period. Concentration of salinity ,pH , nitatr ,nitrite ,ammonia and chlorophyll a in drainage channel were more than supply channel and Gawtar Gulf. While concentation dissolved oxygen and phosphate were in drainage channel less than Gawtar Gulf.Also, sediment with small grain size (clay and silt) caused uptake phosphate and amount phosphate decreased in drainage channel. Considering with lack of environment standards in Iran shrimp effluent, data compared with others countries standard. Results showed that with considerable farm area, value of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH were in permit range in Gwatar Gulf while concentation nitrate, phosphate and chlorophyll a were sometimes more than permit range that could cause plankton bloom. Also, Gwatar Gulf were influence monsoon. Nitate, phosphate, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton increased in gwatar Gulf.Regards with that postmonsoon was simultaneus with shrimp harvest.Therefore, increase some parameters could be caused from shrimp effluent or postmonsoon. Thirty four phytoplankton genus were identified including diatoma, dinoflagellate, cyanophyta and chlorophyta. In each area maxiumum percentage of phytoplankton were belonged to diatoma (63%) in supply channel, cyanophyta (51.7%) in drainage channel and dinoflagellate (94.5%) in Gwatar Gulf.Amount and range chemical and physical factors and plankton composition were different in drainage channel, supply channel and Gwatar Gulf. Cyanophyta could grow more in drainage channel.Percentage of aboundance and diversity of phytoplankton changed in 2002 inrelation to years ago( before shrimp culture, 2000 year and 2001 year) specially in Gwatar Gulf. Mainly percentage of zooplankton were copepoda and thintinida respectively.Diversity zooplankton decreased ratio to years ago. In drainage channel, abundance total of phytoplankton and zooplankton were more than Gwatar Gulf and supply channel.

    Description: Biology aspects of cobia (Rachycentron canadum) were investigated from October 2005 to December 2006 in Northern waters of Persian Gulf (Hormozgan province).The reproduction cycle, sexual maturity, sex ratio, Fecundity, Lm50, feeding, length frequency, growth parameters and mortality of cobia were studied from total of 509 specimens ranged from 19 to 159 fork length. Gonadosomatic index peaked during spring and summer with main peak in June. Spontaneous spawning occurs around the year with peak in June. The overall female to male ratio was significantly 1 : 1.49 (P〈0.05). Batch fecundity were estimated 1684954±118990 in 15 females. Relationship between total length and fecundity were calculated F=1.3717TL 2.9567 (r^2= 0.82). Feeding studies indicated that the bony fishes were main food of cobia (76%) and followed by crustaceans (25%) and mollusks (11%). Rays were least food items (22%). Maximum and Minimum GaSI were observed in March (33%) and August (0.07%) respectively. Females reached 50% sexual maturity at 81.25 cm TL. The total length -weight relationship was W=0.0042L3.1162 (r^2=0.9852). Thetotal length-fork length relationship was TL= 1.1561FL-2.533 (r^2= 0.9933). Growth parameters K, L, and t_0 were calculated by von bertalanfy growth equation: 0.11 (year1), 168.65 cm, 3.49 and -0.97 respectively. The instantons rate of total mortality (z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality estimated by catch curve analysis were 0.30, 0.25, 0.14 (year1). Exploitation rate and Tmax were 0.36 and 28 year respectively.

    Description: A study was undertaken to determine the effects of various dietary carbohydrate to lipid ratios on growth indices, feed performance and body composition of benni (Barbus sharpeyi) juveniles. Nine iso-nitrogenous (25% crude protein) and iso-caloric (3.5 kcal/g digestible energy) semipurified diets with varying carbohydrate to lipid (CHO L) ratios (0.8 to 8.8 g/g) were tested for 8 weeks with three replicates. Each replicate was stocked with 20 fish (initial mean weight 16.47 ± 0.25 g) that were fed to satiation thrice daily. Twenty seven flow-through fiberglass tanks of 300 L capacity with a flow rate of 1.5 L min-1 were used for rearing the fish. Maximum weight gain (WG), weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency ratio (FER), protein efficiency ratio (PER), apparent net protein utilization (ANPU) and fulton,s condition factor (K) were observed in fish fed a 44% carbohydrate and 9% lipid diet, corresponding to a CHO/L ratio of 4.8. Whole body moisture, crude protein and ash content of fish fed varying CHO:L diets did not show any significant differences among treatments (P〉0.05), But whole body lipid content of fish decreased (P〈0.05) as dietary CHO/L ratio increased. The hepatosomatic and viscerosomatic indices (HSI and VSI) decreased (P〈0.05) as dietary CHO:L ratio increased and maximum values were observed in diet with highest amount of lipid. The results of the present study indicated that the optimal dietary CHO/L ratio for a optimal growth and feeding performance of Barbus sharpeyi juvenile, ranged between 3.8 and 4.8.

    Description: The culture of three species green tiger prown (Penaeus semisulcatus) ,white leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and Indian white shrimp (Fenneropenaeus indicus) were grown in 7 ponds (0.4 and 0.25 hectare) for 110 days at a stocking density of 25 shrimp/m2 on Hele Research Station. The average of temperature and salinity was 30 degrees centigrade and 46-48 ppt .At the end of the culture mean weights of L.vannamei 18.68±2.6 was higer than the P.semisucatus 7.77±1.49 and F.indicus 14.66 ±2.1 also results demonstrated that there was a significant relation (P〈0.05) between mean weight. Final yield were 3114, 1983 and 848 Kg for L.vannamei, F.indicus and P.semisucatus.The FCR was better for L.vannamei (1.28) than F.indicus (1.48) and P.semisucatus (2.15).

    Description: This study was conducted during April to June 2007 .Pomferet brooders were captured by gill net (5 m Height, 300 m length, 7 cm size) during tidal time with 20-40 minutes interval. Khor Mermis, Khor Patil and Khor Mavi were subjected for broodstock captures. Totally 237 brooders were captured (126 male and 111 female) and were kept in 300 L. tanks. Semi dried method were used for breeding with 0.6 % fertility solution. Hatching were placed during 16-18 hoers. Fish larvae were kept in 4 T. tanks and were fed by fresh rotifer .temperature and salinity was kept 31-28 degree centigrade and 45-47 ppt. respectively .results shows successful breeding of pomferet in 2007 .egg diameter was 1.1 mm and hatching were completed during 16-18 hours at 31-29 degree centigrade. After 31 days length of larvae was 40 mm. while for 7 and 15 days length of larvae was 4.5 and 8.4 mm respectively.

    Description: This study was carried out in August – september 2009 in Bushehr province waters. Two different shrimp bottom trawls were used in which were woven by Poly Amid and Poly Ethylene with mesh sizes (stretched) of 50 mm and sack with 35 mm. Also 2 different vessels of two dhows and one steel ship each with 26 and 30 hauls were used and taken in to comparison from point of obtained results. Total catch of PA and PE trawels were 4592 and 5535 kg of which the ratio of shrimp catch and by catch for PA trawl was 32.4 and 67.6 % respectively; and for PE trawl was 34.2 and 65.8%. Total catch of PA and PE trawls of steel trawler ( ship ) were estimated 3158.0 and 4784.7 kg, respectively, of which the shrimp/ bycatch ratio was 6.6 : 93.4%. There was a higher amount of bycatch for PE comparing to PA trawl (p〈0.05). on the other hand the decrease of shrimp and bycatch for PA comparing to PE dhow trawlers were 21.3 and 15.0% and for ship were 34.6 and 34.0% respectively. The weight ratio is 1:15 i.e . in PE ship trawl, in proportion to on kg shrimp, 15 kg bycatch was harvested. it is proposed to standardize the mesh size and also to do obligtory the instal of squared mesh size panel .

    Description: This research was done in a trout farm in Kohkiloyeh and Boyer- Ahmad province. The main object of this study was comparing of two sources of astaxanthin (synthetic or algae) in feed on reproduction efficiency of rainbow trout and some indices of egg quality. Therefore, it was considered 7 groups consisting 6 treatments of two different astaxanthin sources and a control (without astaxanthin). So, algal astaxanthin (haematococcus pluvialis) in the three levels of 2.67, 3.55 and 8gr/kg food (T1,T2, T3) and synthetic source in three levels of 40, 80 and 120mg/kg food in diet (T4, T5, T6) examined on 140 trout broods (3-4 years) for 4 months, before the spawning season. Reproduction efficiency analyzed through reproduction indices such as egg diameter, fecundity, fertilization, survival, hatching and eyed egg rates. Significant difference between treatments in terms of fecundity, eyed eggs rate and the number of eggs per gram was observed (P 〈0.05). Although in some factors such as diameter, egg weight per body and fertilization rate, no significant differences was observed. By increasing level of astaxanthin in both sources of algal and synthetic, hatching and eyed egg rates increased, but the effect of alga source on these indices was more perfect. Considering the results, the best result related to treatment of 8 gr/kg alga (T3). Observations during this research indicated no disease and mortality and also proper coloration and freshness of fishes. There was significant differences on blood factors (P 〈0.05). The broods were fed with algal astaxanthin had lower blood sugar. concentration of cholesterol was decressed alog with increasing in both the source of astaxanthin, however lower cholesterol relaed to algal astaxanthin. Total serum protein increased in treatments containing algal from 2.67 to 8 g/kg of astaxanthin. Increase in level of astaxanthin from 40 to 80 mg/kg, albumin increased and from 80 to 120 mg/kg, it was decreased. The changes in serum globulin treatments containing synthetic was not regular. Overall the results asserted that the application of astaxanthin improves reproduction performance of rainbow trout. It also concluded that natural astaxanthin (Haematococcus pluvialis) for the reason that contains supplementary nutritious, is extraordinary preferable than synthetic astaxanthin to improve reproductions indices and egg quality of rainbow trout.

    Description: 30000 juvenile Indian majour carps (Labeo Rohita,Cirhinus merigala, Catla catla) imported (2007 and 2008) and transferred to the earthen ponds in Astaneh Fisheries Research Station (Gilan) and Sheiban Resaerch center (Khozestan), In order to assess the viability of rearing fry up to 1 gram fingerlings under the climatic condition of north and south part of Iran . Growth parameters from the larval stage to 1 g were studied also. The fry with 300 mg weight, were released in to 3ponds.specimens were separated to tree experimental categories. fishes were fed with artificial food and also with the natural products of the ponds which were enriched with organic fertilizers, after being equally stocked in the ponds .During the experiment, oxygen level ,PH, turbidity, and temperature were measured . Monthly fry samples were taken, for weight and length biometrical analysis and also determination of the weight gain percentage, average daily growth rate, specific growth rate. Results have indicated adaptations and considerable growth in this species, with an increase from the initial weight of 300 mg to an average of 13.5±1.6 mg in 50 days period until the end of November for fingerlings.Catla was gain 1 g. during 15 day while Roho and Merigal were gain 1 g. during 14 and 10 days respectively. Results revealed that the Indian majour carps compatibility with the condition in Gilan province was succesfull and the combination of species and optimization of their compatibility specialy in other provinces like Sistan and Baluchestan were remind for futhre studies.

    Description: Awareness of health and nutrition of fish has led the food industry to development of fishery-based ready-to-eat products. In this study seven filling materials based on 60-70 - 80% fish mince from 7 local fish species ‘i.e.’ Talang Queen fish (Scomberoides commersonnianus), oriental sole (Brachirus orientalis), Barred sickle fish (Drepane longimana), Big eye Croaker (Pennahia anea), Japanese threadfin bream (Nemipterus japonicas), javelin grunter (pomadasys kaakan) and Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) were formulated and applied for developing fish strudels. A 9-point hedonic scale ranging from 1 (extremely dislike) to 9 (extremely like) was used for screening the acceptance of the prototypes. A 3-component D-optimal Mixture Design was also applied to optimize the fish strudel formulation. Preliminary experiments were done to identify the high-impact ingredients, which had a high effect on the sensory quality when their levels (%) were changed. The results indicated that fish strudel containing 60% Talang Queen fish (Scomberoides commersonnianus) mince in the filling materials had significantly higher liking in odor, flavor, and overall acceptability than the other prototypes. So it was selected for quality changes study. Product's characteristics and stability were studied during 6-month storage at -18 °C. The fish strudel packed in a polyethylene sealed bag was stable during the storage period. The peroxide and TVBN values remained low. The results in this paper provide important information for companies planning to develop convenience food from low value fish. Furthermore, development of strudel filled with fish mince/ flesh could be an effective way to enhance nutritional and functional value of such products. The products could be used as a nutritious snack especially for kids which could be a means of increasing fish consumption.

Specimens were separated to tree experimental categories: 1= (30%indian carp and 70% chinees carp) , 2= (50%indian carp and 50% chinees carp) , 3= (70%indian carp and 30% chinees carp) .single chinees carp production were used as control . fishes were fed with artificial food and also with the natural products of the ponds which were enriched with organic fertilizers, after being equally stocked in the ponds .During the experiment, oxygen level ,PH, turbidity, and temperature were measured. Monthly fry samples were taken, for weight and length biometrical analysis and also determination of the weight gain percentage, average daily growth rate, specific growth rate. Results have indicated adaptations and considerable growth in this species, with an increase from the initial weight of 300 mg to an average of 13.5±1.6 mg in 50 days period until the end of November for fingerlings. Also the average weight of growing phase (second year of production ) was 647g for Labeo Rohita ,420 g. for Cirhinus merigala and 734g for Catla catla. The special growth rate (SGR)in Roho was 4.51 %.and 3.9 % for merigal and6.2 % for Catla while for Chinees carps SGR was 4.9, 6.7, 7.6 and 5.8 for silver carp,grass carp, common carp and big head respectively. Results revealed that the Indian majour carps compatibility with the condition in Gilan province was succesfull and the combination of species and optimization of their compatibility were remind for futhre studies.

    Description: This study was set up to investigate the nutritional value and the optimum inclusion level of one Iranian cottonseed meal i.e. var. Pak, (CSMP) as a substitute for soybean meal (SBM) in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) feed. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) for these varieties were calculated in experiment 1 by using an indigestible marker (chromic oxide). Six formulated feeds consisting different substitution levels (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100%) of SBM with CSMP, CSMS, and CSMA, respectively, were fed to a total of 540 rainbow trout with initial mean body weight of 50 ± 5 g. Fish were randomly stocked into eighteen 100 L. fiberglass tanks with 30 fish per tank and 3 tanks per diet and fed to satiation 3 times a day for 8 weeks. At the end of each separate experiment, 3 fish from each replicate for each dietary treatment were sacrificed to measure the whole fish body proximate compositions and liver gossypol content. After an 8 week feeding trail, the average weight gain, FCR, SGR, PER, DWG, PWG and CF of fish fed with different diets were measured separately. For all treatments, the survival percentage was more than 98%. Results showed that 100% and 80% CSMP showed in better growth in each experiment and 100% CSMP wasthe best in weight gain (104.3 g), FCR (1.5) and SGR (1.25%).

    Description: In order to study phytopague fingerlings feeding in fish ponds, simultaneously to the beginning of warm season and cultivation, fingerlings of 3-5 gr from 4 ponds in Mazandaran province were captured, fixed with formalin, then transferred to the plankton determination laboratory of Caspian sea ecologic institute. Based on carried out studies on the first and the end party of their intestine and the pond water, phytophague fingerlings feeds on phytoplankton, zooplankton and detritus. But the essential nutrition was on phytoplankton and detritus. Planktonic groups were formed of Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta and Euglenophyta. But in addition to these four groups Pyrophyta was present in fish pond water. Relative abundance of these nutrient organisms in water and intestine was different. Also in most cases a direct relation was observed between the intensity of water organisms and intestine ingredients. Based on this study, essential differences of digestion were observed following to the source of nutrition and the most difference were considered in digestion of Chrysophytes, Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta. Base on the results of this study we propose to make more studies on fertilization and the proportion of different fertilizers in fish ponds in order to obtain easily digestible phytoplankton thus increase in fish exploitation.

    Description: Streptococcosis is an acute infectious disease that causes mortality in marine and freshwater aquacultures. One of the most important hosts is susceptible to the disease of rainbow trout and during the past decade its industrial production has been growing in Iran. According to FAO, Iran is among the 10 countries producing fish in the world. The most important bacteria causing Strptococcosis includes Strptococcus, Vagococcus and Enterococcus genera. But in all cases, the clinical sings are the same. More than a decade has passed since the first report of this disease in Iran and unfortunately, this disease has become the most important problems of trout production in Iran. Therefor, 72 farms were selected in 8 provinces including Mazandaran, Gilan, Lorestan, CharmahalBakhtiyari, Fars, Kermanshah, Tehran and Kokiloye-Boyer Ahmad and a total 520 moribund and apparently healthy rainbow trout (weight 50 – 200gr) were collected during summer 2008 to 2009. Fish kidney, spleen and liver samples were culture aseptically and finally 206 isolates were identified as gram positive cocci. Using conventional biochemical test, S.uberis, S.agalactiae, S.dysgalactiae, S.faecium and S.inia. Additionally, 172 from 206 isolates were confirmed as S.uberis، S.agalactiae، S.dysgalactiae، S.faecium and S.inia using a PCR assay ased on the results, the most prevalent is belong to S.uberis (isolated from 5 of 7 province), S.dysgalactiae (isolated from 4 of 7 province), S.agalactiae (isolated from 2 of 7 province) and S.faecium and S.inia (from 1 of 7 province) respectively. It is necessary to mention, S.inia was identified just to Fars and any gram positive cocci was isolated from Tehran.

    Description: The project of "Assessment of different methods of water treatment on decreasing pathogenic bacteria in shrimp hatcheries" achieved by mean of reviewing the effectiveness of various methods on the water treatment to reduce bacterial load of sea water. The project performed in Bandargah region of Bushehr province in order to checking the effect of different methods on the sea water and bacterial population. This project has been done over a year. In this study a total of 138 samples was collected during seven times and was evaluated as well as 7 treatments. In this study, the comparison of the effect of each factors (sand filter, chlorine, ultra violet ray, chlorine combined with ultra violet ray) was analyzed on the sea water by means of disinfection. During this study, other environmental factors such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and salinity was measured till we can ensure that they don’t have any negative impact on the treatments. Results showed that the density of total bacteria in sea water (Control) was averagely 5187 CFU/ml, this was done while the total density of bacteria in the sea water, reservation pool sample, sand filter water, water that irradiated with ultraviolet rays, chlorinated water and the water that was influenced by both chlorine and ultra violet ray was respectively 5187 2137, 4449 2042, 2782 1335, 1164 692, 143 104, 87 76 CFU/ml. Therefore, reservation pool, sand filter, ultra violet ray, chlorine, chlorine-ultra violet ray each of them was reduce respectively 14, 46, 77, 97, 98 percent of the density of total bacteria or in other words they reduced 0.06, 0.27, 0.65, 1.56, 1.77 log of the total population of bacteria in water. Moreover, the results from the total count of vibrios showed that reservation pool, sand filter, ultra violet ray, chlorine, chlorine-ultra violet ray each of them was reduce respectively 17, 47, 74, 98, 99 percent of the density of total vibrios or in other words they reduced respectively 0.08, 0.27, 0.59, 1.66, and 1.95 log of the total population of vibrios in sea water. Also the bacteria that isolated from each treatment were identified with the use of biochemical methods that totally were includes a wide range of bacteria, the identified vibrios were: Vibrio alginolyticus, V. costicola, V. fischeri, V. fluvialis I, V. fluvialis II, V. harveyi, V. natriegens, V. nigripulchritudo, V. parahaemolyticus, V. plagius I, V. vulnificus, V. anguilarum I, V. campbellii, V. nereis, V. proteolyticus, V. splendidus, and Unknown V. spp. Other identified bacteria belonging to the following genus: Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Borkholderia, Eschricia, Enteroacter, Flavobacterium, Micococcus, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Serratia, Staphaphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Unknown Bacteria spp. By comparing the results, we concluded that the best result was related to treatment that the sea water had been disinfected after the combined effects of chlorine and ultraviolet ray. It was determined that this process in compared with other treatments, had been reduced the total number of bacteria, the total number of Vibrios, the number of sucrose fermentative vibrios, and the number of non-sucrose fermentative vibrios respectively 98, 99, 98, 99 percent. In other words, the number of bacteria was reduced respectively 1.77, 1.94, 1.82, 2.23 log. So in this study, the applied method was introduced as the most effective way of disinfecting sea water. Meanwhile, none of pathogenic bacteria for shrimp including Vibrio harveyi was isolated by using this treatment. Comparing the results showed that the combined effects of chlorine and ultraviolet radiation is the most effective applied method for disinfecting sea water.

    Description: This project in partnership with Azerbaijan State Fisheries Department and the aim of increasing fish production hydrothermal (Carp fish) at unit area through providing scientific and practical method in applying air device and nutrition management, a field area of 8.5 hectares and in ponds with 3300 m^2 at village Eylarzgy carried at Urmia city. After preparation of ponds, action to release fry density was 6000 ha piece. Percent including 55 percent of silver carp (as most fish), Common carp 31 percent, 8 percent Grass carp and 6 percent of Big head with average weights 67 to 92 grams respectively. For fertilizing ponds in addition to basic fertilizer, during development, organic fertilizers (cow) amount to 24 ton/ hectar (Aslary) once every two days and types of mineral fertilizers (chemical) rate of 1012.5 kg per in three days once were used. In addition to feeding carp fish with natural food, concentrates and food for feeing Grass carp fresh forage (alfalfa) was used. Oxygen supply required for ponds were provided with one to two air units (Air jet). Sampling and biometry of fish and water samples for water analysis and identification of plant zooplankton (of the family and genus) once every month until the end of the growing period was performed. Resulting data were analyzed with Excel statistical software. Results showed that the production rate in the studied ponds was 4.74 tons per hectare and production of 3.15 tons per hectare in year ago, the farm has 50.5 percent increase compared to year ago average production rate in the whole province (3.21 tons per hectare) of 47.7 percent and the average production rate in the country in 1385 (about 3.8 tons per hectare) 24.7 percent increase shows.

    Description: In order to do this study, 150 Persian sturgeon having 75g mean weight transferred to tanks with 500L volume. After dividing the fishes into two groups (experimental and control group), the fingerlings fed by concentrate food that contained different levels of Zataria multiflora essential oil (15g/kg, 25g/kg, 50g/kg, 100g/kg) for 8 weeks. Finally, sampling carried out on blood and serum of fishes. After preparing the samples based on standard methods, haematology and serology studies, performed. The results showed significant difference in mean and standard deviation of monocytes between experimental and control groups (P〈0.05). In treatment 25g/kg, monocyte count was more than other treatments. But there are no significant differences in mean and standard deviation of other white blood cells. The results of serologic studies showed no significant differences in serum indices (C3, C4 and total protein) (P〈0.05), but there is significant difference in mean and standard deviation of albumin. So that , the mean and standard deviation in treatments 15g/kg and 25g/kg and control group were more than treatments 50g/kg and 100g/kg of Zataria multiflora essential oil. Also , this is the first record of the anesthetic effect of Zataria multiflora essence on fish. In this research the effect of 50 and 100 ppm concentrations of Zataria multiflora essence on the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry with average weight of 15±2 grams and Salmo trutta caspius with average weight of 40±4 grams has been studied. In this research the water temperature was 16-17 ºC, dissolved oxygen 7±0.2 and pH═8. The average time of coming to unconscious in 50 ppm and 100 ppm concentration in both Oncorhyncus mykiss and Salmo trutta caspius was 3 and 2 minutes respectively; and the means of balance and return of anesthesia were 2 and 3 minutes respectively, and the average time of inducing balance and recovering consciousness was 2 and 3 minutes respectively. Moreover, in contrast there is a significant difference between the time of inducing unconsciousness and recovery in all kinds of fish (p 〈 0.0001). The fish anesthetized with 100 ppm concentration after transference to water without Zataria multiflora essence were calm for 30 minutes and showed no reaction to weak stimuli (such as touching). In regard of the time of falling into unconsciousness and the time of recovery by different degrees of concentration of Zataria multiflora essence there is no significant difference between Oncorhyncus mykiss and Salmo trutta caspius (p 〉 0.05). This research also shows that Zataria multiflora essence has an anesthetic effect but because of its unwanted severe irreparable breathing (respiration) side effects and also the deformation of the fish which is against the fisheries’ ethics (death accompanied with extreme pain) it would be better not to be used as anesthetics. One of the advantages of Zataria multiflora essence as anesthetics is its low concentration (25 ppm) for anesthetizing the fish and also its economical cost. In addition, this essence has antimicrobial and disinfecting effects and, therefore, it can remove the infection from the external surface of the body of the fish. One of the most noticeable defects of Zataria multiflora essence is that at the time of anesthetizing it causes a state of excitement and irritability in the fish which manifests itself in the speed of swimming and the possibility of jumping out of water. As a result, although Zataria multiflora essence has anesthetizing effects, it is recommended not to be used for anaesthetizing the fish, because it posses unwanted side effects that may even cause the death of the fish; however, it may be used as a sedative during manipulating the fish.

    Description: Fish soup powder is produced from three kinds of fish in Chabahar catched in Oman sea white flesh of many low value fish like threadfin bream, perches etc. can be used to prepare instant fish soup powder. This product has a high consumer acceptability in many countries in this research project we used 4 low value fishes with local name of Sarm, Chaman, Aroos and Talal belonging to families Carangidea, Lethrinidea, Drepanidae and Scombroidea. soup powder packed in laminated pouches and the shelf life of it is one year in ambient temperatures. The quality used to be good up to 6 month but after this time the quality decreases gradually. The experiment on fish soup showed that the percentage of protein was 32 percent, fat 11 percent and humidity 12 percent and ash 4 percent. The experiment conducted on fish soup powder was peroxide, total microbial count, organoleptic test for 6 month.

    Description: Regarding to monitor of demersal resources in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, and also biomass and CPUA estimation of them, eleven research cruises were carried out by using R/V Ferdows-1 equipped with bottom trawl, covering the area from 49º 00´ E in the west (borderline with Kuwait) to 61º 25´E in the east (borderline with Pakistan) from 2009 to 2011. The study area was stratified into 17 strata (A to Q) of which 10 strata (A to J) were in the Persian Gulf and 7 strata (K to Q) were in the Oman Sea, covering the depths of 10-50 m in the Persian Gulf and 10-100 m in the Oman Sea. A total of 316 stations were randomly selected and the biomass and CPUA were estimated by swept area method. In 2009, due to the bloom of jellyfish, there was some problem for sampling and therefore made some bias in our estimation. Therefore, the biomass of jellyfish was excluded from all calculations. The comparison between two regions indicated that the percentage of density of demersal fishes in the Persian Gulf during years 2009, 2010 and 2011 were 1.5, 3.7 and 1.7 times more than the Oman Sea and totally 60-80% of total biomass was found for the Persian Gulf. Also a comparison among 17 strata the highest biomass was found for K region (Sirik to Jask) in the Oman Sea in 2009 & 2011; and C & D regions (Genaveh to Dayyer) in 2010 in the Persian Gulf. The same comparison was done for CPUA of commercial, non-commercial and total in both water bodies and it was found that in years 2009 and 2011 the regions of L (Jask to Meidani) and K (Sirik to Jask) in the Oman ; and 2010 the G region (Mogham to Farour) in the Persian Gulf had the highest value of this parameter. It can be concluded that the north-west of the Oman Sea has the best condition of biomass and CPUA of commercial and non-commercial demersal fishes; and on the contrary the low values were estimated for A region (north-west of the Persian Gulf) and P region (Konarak to Ramin) in the Oman Sea. With review the mean CPUA in defferent depth layers for years 2009, 2010 and 2011, it was concluded that with increasing the depth, the mean CPUA is decreased and the lowest CPUA belongs to depths of 50-100 m. The comparison between commercial and non-commercial groups in both ecosystems, it concluded that the density of commercial species were higher than non-commercial ones; and for years 2009, 2010 and 2011 the commercial species consist of 52.2, 57.1 and 59.7 % of total biomass. In all years the Persian Gulf indicated higher values than the Oman Sea. The most abundant fishes were Rays, Catfishes, Grunts, Japanese threadfin bream, Carangids, Hair tail, Barracuda and Lizardfish for both Persian Gulf and Oman Sea.

    Description: This study was carried out on rivers, basins & qanat of Qom region during the 1376-1378and Fish samples were taken from 2 permanent rivers (Qomrood ,Ghara_chag)& from some seasonal ones (Tagharood, Zavarian, Vesva, Biraghan). Also local fishes was followed in 100 qanats in the region and Random fish sampling was done in permanent river extension out of province. This study aimed to recognize different fish species in the province water reservoir and estimating the fisheries potential in the province. For fish sampling nets such as mashk, salik, hook and hand tailored were used. Electroshoker was not used at all. Results of fish recognition showed that fish samples belong to 12 species & 4 family of "cyprinidae", "Balitoridae", "cyprinodontidae" and "poecilidae".The qanat fishes of the montain (kahak, Khagestan) and pastora area (Ghanavat,jafarabad) included by two families of "cyprinid", "Balitoridea".In some qanat which were connected to rivers more species of fish and anotherAquatic animal were observed & sampled.At the and map of geographical distribution of local fishes was planned.

    Description: The project carried out at Shrimp Research station of Bandargah in 2011 to determine the production parameters such as; Average body weight, production, survival and feed conversion ratio in closed- recirculating aquaculture system for shrimp culture. This project was performed in 4 m3 fiberglass tanks. 3 tanks was chosen for the control and 3 were assigned to treatments. Considered Species in this treatment was white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) that with a density of 60 pieces per square meter, and was reared for 90 days. Culture in control as usual and change water regularly, but the treatments did not change water during the period of culture. Water in the treatment tanks was going to turn the filter system and waste was removed by mechanical and coal filter embedded in the route, and after filtering was transferred to the wastewater tank. Wastewater was aerated in this tank and after 24 hours was pumped out and return to treatments tanks. In the final of project, mean weight, survival rate and production for control and treatment, was respectively, 18.27 ± 2.84 and 20.70 ± 1.47 g, 73.83 ± 4.14 and 77.17± 13.66 percent, and 0.81 ± 0.14 and 0.97 ± 0.23 kg/m^2. Statistical analysis results show that there are no significant differences found between treatments and control (P〉 0.05), although in all the above criteria, the relative improvement was achieved to compared of control. But the results of feed conversion ratio was 1.27 ± 0.16 for treatments that are significantly different (P 〈0.05) with controls (1.56 ± 0.23). This result showed that efficiency of the food was better in closed- recirculating shrimp culture system.
