    Description: The diversity and microbial load of the micro flora inhabiting the gut sections of captured and the cultured Clarias gariepinus were investigated. The gut contents of the fish were isolated and characterized using standard method. The results of the characterization revealed the presence of bacteria and fungi in the guts of the fish. The bacteria isolated from the captured fish were Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella mobilis, Enterobacter spp, Shigella spp, and Micrococcus varians while Citrobacter spp, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter spp, Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens and Shigella spp were isolated from the cultured fish.. The fungi isolates found in the gut of the captured fish included, Penicillium chrysogenum, Fusarium spp and Rhizopus stolonifer while Aspergillus flavus, Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigates were isolated in the cultured fish. The bacteria count obtained from the fore gut, mid gut and hind gut of the captured fish were; 1.4 x 1O-~B cfu/g, 1.7 x 1O-~B cfu/g and 2.7 x 1O-~B cfu/g while that of cultured fish had 2.8 x 10-~B cfu/g, 2.05 x 10-~Bcfu/g and 2.65 x 10-~Bcfu/g respectively. The spore count of the fungi isolated from the fore gut, mid gut and hind gut of captured fish ranged between 4.0 x 10-~B spore/g and 9.0 x 1O-~B spore/g while the count obtained from the cultured fish ranged between 3.0 x 10-~B and 9.05 x 1O-~B spore/g. The hind gut had the highest number of species and microbial load in both captured and cultured fish than the other region. Though, there was significant difference (P0.05). The results therefore suggest that there is diversity in microbial composition and microbial load in different sections of the gut of cultured and captured fish which may reflect of the environment where they were raised.

    Description: The effect of substituting soybean meal with raw sunflower and sesame seed meal was evaluated using haematological indices of Clarias gariepinus fed the diets containing sunflower and sesame seed meal. Seven isonitrogeneous and isocaloric diets containing sunflower and sesame seed meal replacing soybean meal at a rate of 15, 30 and 45% were prepared. A diet without replacement of soybean meal served as control. The result of fish fed test diets showed significant (P〈0.05) difference over the fish fed control diet with respect to PCV and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Fish fed control diet had the lowest Hb, PCV, WBC, RBC, MCV, MCHC, ESr. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the fish fed control diet and test diets with respect to MCH, MCHC, ESr, Neutrophil, Monocytes, Eusinophils and Lymphocytes. Hence it can be concluded that the haemotological parameter of Clarias gariepinus is not significantly (P〉0.05) changed with increase dietary inclusion of raw sunflower and sesame seed meal.

    Description: The microbial load of four different fish species from five different market locations in Ibadan metropolis were determined using standard microbiological procedures. The bacteria count of fish sampled from Ojo market was the highest while the bacteria count of the fish sample from Bodija market was the lowest. There was no significant difference (p〈0.05) in the microbial load of the fish sampled from various market locations in Ibadan metropolis. Similarly, there was no significant difference (p〉0.05) in the microbial load on various fish species sold in Ibadan metropolis. The isolated bacteria from the study were: E. coli, Salmonella spp, Klebsiella spp, Staphylococcus aureus, Aerosomonas spp, Pseudomonas spp, Vibrio spp, Serratia spp, Chromobacterium spp, Enterobacteria spp and Shigella spp. The fungi count of fish sampled from Omi markets was the highest while the fungi count of the fish sampled from Ojo market was the lowest. The following fungi were however isolated from the study: Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium spp, Fusarium oxysporum, Trrichoderma spp and Ceotrichium albidium. The study shows that reheating may be necessary to destroy or inactivate micro-organisms in smoked fish before consumption.

    Description: This study reports the microbial flora of differently processed tilapia fish obtained from Olomoore market, Abeokuta, Nigeria. Samples were purchased, differently processed (using smoking, salting, freezing) and analyzed for the presence of bacteria. Microbial loads and characterisation were examined on the gills and the skin using standard microbiological procedures. The progression of growth was also monitored within I0-day storage period for the differently processed fish. 〈i〉Proteus vulgaris, Leuconostoc meseritiroides, Klebsiella planticola〈/i〉, Pseudomonas spp, 〈i〉Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtitles〈/i〉, Enterobacter spp, 〈i〉Proteus vulgaris〈/i〉, Lactobacillus spp. were the bacteria isolated from the differently processed fish. There was no significant difference (P~B 0. 05) in the bacteria load of the gill during the first day of processing. However, significant variation (P~B 0. 05) existed in the bacteria load of the skin of the fish during the first day of processing. Although no significant difference (P~B 0. 05) was recorded in the bacteria load of the gill and the skin of the fish during the first day of processing in nutrient agar medium. In the tenth day frozen fish gill had the highest bacteria load while smoked fish gill had the lowest bacteria load there was significant difference (P~B 0. 05) in the bacteria load on the gill of differently processed fish gill. Similarly, there was significant variation (P~0.05) in the bacteria load of the skin of the fish during the tenth day processing.

    Description: This study investigates the use of Luffa cylindrica seed meal as soybean replacer in the diet of Clarias gariepinus. Five isonitrogenous diets containing soybean meal which was replaced by Luffa cylindrica at a rate of 0, 15,30,45 and 60% were made. The diets without Luffa cylindrical seed meal served as the control. Experimental diets were assigned randomly to the tanks and each group of fish was fed 5% body weight in equal proportion per day. The fish fed diet 1 had the highest incidence of cost, while the fish fed diet 4 had the lowest incidence of cost. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the incidence of cost of producing 1kg fish with the different dietary treatments. The fish fed at diet 4 had the highest profit, while the fish fed at diet 1 had the lowest profit. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the profit margin of producing 1kg fish with the different dietary treatments. The incidence of cost showed that it was cheaper to produce 1kg of fish with Luffa cylindrical seed meal because feeding the fish with the diet (control and tests diets) left some profit margin.

    Description: The apparent digestibility coefficient of raw sunflower (Helianthus annus). and sesame (Sesamum indicum) seedmeal by Clariid catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fingerlings was evaluated at 15,30 and 45% levels of replacement respectively using soybean meal based diets as control diet. There was significant difference (p〈0.05) in apparent organic matter digestibility (AOM), apparent protein digestibility (APD), apparent energy digestibility (AED) apparent carbohydrate digestibility (ACD) between the fish fed control diet and the fish fed test diets. However there was no significant difference (p〉0.05) in apparent lipid and fibre digestibilities of fish fed control diet and test diets RSF15 and RSM15

    Description: The study was conducted to assess the evolution of fishing gears and crafts utilized by fishermen in Eleyele lake reservoir in lbadan Nigeria. Data were collected from thirty fishermen using a structured questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using counts and chi-square. Majority (56.7%) of the respondents were married, more of respondents were male (56.7%). Fish and fishing gear construction activities in the study area is dominated by youth. More of the respondents were Christians and few were Muslims (36.7%). There was significant relationship between the type of fishing gear use (modern and traditionl) and the time spent to catch fish as well as the quantity of fish caught. The result also revealed that traditional fishing gears such as bamboo trap, hook and line and cast net were been used by the fisher folks but were later changed to modern fishing gear. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of the modern fishing gear is being hampered by aquatic weed covering the surface of the water.

    Description: This study was conducted to investigate growth response of C. gariepinus fed diets containing C. albidum seed-meal replacing Five isonitrogenous diets containing maize which was replaced by C. albidum at a rate of 0,25, 50, 75 and 100% were made. Without C. albidum seed-meal served as the control, experimental diets were assigned randomly to the tanks and each group was fed 5% body weight in equal proportion per day. The fish fed diet 1 had the highest PCV while the fish fed diet 3 had the PCV. There was significant difference (p〈0.05) in the PCV of the fish fed various dietary treatments. However there was no difference (p〉0.05) in the PCV of the fish fed diet 2, diet 3, diet 4, diet 5. A similar trend as observed for PCV was also Hb, RBC, MCV, MCH and MCHC. There was no significant difference (p〉0.05) in the WBC of the blood of the fish fed various treatments so also were neutrophyls and lymphocytes.
