Beschreibung: Efforts to date have not advanced Indigenous participation, capacity building and knowledge in Arctic environmental science in Canada because Arctic environmental science has yet to acknowledge, or truly practice decolonizing research. The expanding literature on decolonizing and Indigenous research provides guidance towards these alternative research approaches, but less has been written about how you do this in practice and the potential role for non-Indigenous research partners in supporting Inuit self-determination in research. This paper describes the decolonizing methodology of a non-Indigenous researcher partner and presents a co-developed approach, called the Sikumiut model, for Inuit and non-Indigenous researchers interested in supporting Inuit self-determination. In this model the roles of Inuit and non-Indigenous research partners were redefined, with Inuit governing the research and non-Indigenous research partners training and mentoring Inuit youth to conduct the research themselves. The Sikumiut model shows how having Inuit in decision-making positions ensured Inuit data ownership, accessibility, and control over how their Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is documented, communicated, and respected for its own scientific merit. It examines the benefits and potential to build on the existing research capacity of Inuit youth and describes the guidance and lessons learned from a non-Indigenous researcher in supporting Inuit self-determination in research. Beschreibung: A total of 344 soil cores were taken in annually cropped fields of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario from 2011 to 2013 in areas where the field shapes, or obstacles within fields, required the driving pattern of farm operations to overlap. Soil nitrate-N concentrations in overlapping areas were 60% greater, soil Olsen-P concentrations were 23% greater, and pH was 0.5 units greater at 0–15 cm depth compared with non-overlapping areas, suggesting smaller nutrient use efficiency and potential for greater nutrient loss.

Beschreibung: Differences in soil water retention (SWR) characteristics between soil types and the factors driving those differences provide important information for land management, particularly in regions such as the Colombian Andes, which have limited water-storage infrastructure and where soils provide plant-available water and other ecosystem services. The objective of this study was to explore relationships between SWR and physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of Andisols and Inceptisols through a case study of two watersheds in the Colombian Andes. This study identified a complex relationship between total carbon (TC), short-range order (SRO) minerals, and SWR. Both soil types had high SWR, with volumetric water content at permanent wilting point between 39% and 53%. Principal component analysis showed association of SWR with TC, SRO minerals, and % clay in both soil types. The Andisols of this study were coarse textured, allophanic (rich in allophane and imogolite — up to 17% in the B horizon), and with up to 15% TC in the A horizon. In contrast, the Inceptisols were fine textured (〉30% clay) and higher in ferrihydrite than the Andisols. The formation of organo-metallic complexes was observed in A horizons; however, TC was lower under pasture than forest in both soil types. The addition of organic matter to soils with SRO minerals, such as the soils of this study, may foster the formation of organo-metallic complexes, stabilize soil C, and enhance SWR. Consequently, both study sites may benefit from management practices that increase soil organic matter.

Beschreibung: Summary On 24th August 2016 at 01:36 UTC a ML6.0 earthquake struck several villages in central Italy, among which Accumoli, Amatrice and Arquata del Tronto. The earthquake was recorded by about 350 seismic stations, causing 299 fatalities and damage with macroseismic intensities up to 11. The maximum acceleration was observed at Amatrice station (AMT) reaching 916 cm/s2 on E-W component, with epicentral distance of 15 km and Joyner and Boore distance to the fault surface (RJB) of less than a kilometre. Motivated by the high levels of observed ground motion and damage, we generate broadband seismograms for engineering purposes by adopting a hybrid method. To infer the low frequency seismograms, we considered the kinematic slip model by Tinti et al. (2016). The high frequency seismograms were produced using a stochastic finite-fault model approach based on dynamic corner-frequency. Broadband synthetic time series were therefore obtained by merging the low and high frequency seismograms. Simulated hybrid ground motions were compared both with the observed ground motions and the ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs), to explore their performance and to retrieve the region-specific parameters endorsed for the simulations. In the near-fault area we observed that hybrid simulations have a higher capability to detect near source effects and to reproduce the source complexity than the use of GMPEs. Indeed, the general good consistency found between synthetic and observed ground motion (both in the time and frequency domain), suggests that the use of regional-specific source scaling and attenuation parameters together with the source complexity in hybrid simulations improves ground motion estimations. To include the site effect in stochastic simulations at selected stations, we tested the use of amplification curves derived from HVRSs (horizontal-to-vertical response spectra) and from HVSRs (horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios) rather than the use of generic curves according to NTC-18 Italian seismic design code. We generally found a further reduction of residuals between observed and simulated both in terms of time histories and spectra.

Beschreibung: Summary We explore here the benefits of using constraints from seismic tomography in gravity data inversion and how inverted density distributions can be improved by doing so. The methodology is applied to a real field case in which we reconstruct the density structure of the Pyrenees along a southwest-northeast transect going from the Ebro basin in Spain to the Arzacq basin in France. We recover the distribution of densities by inverting gravity anomalies under constraints coming from seismic tomography. We initiate the inversion from a prior density model obtained by scaling a pre-existing compressional seismic velocity Vp model using a Nafe-Drake relationship : the Vp model resulting from a full-waveform inversion of teleseismic data. Gravity data inversions enforce structural similarities between Vp and density by minimizing the norm of the cross-gradient between the density and Vp models. We also compare models obtained from 2.5D and 3D inversions. Our results demonstrate that structural constraints allow us to better recover the density contrasts close to the surface and at depth, without degrading the gravity data misfit. The final density model provides valuable information on the geological structures and on the thermal state and composition of the western region of the Pyrenean lithosphere.

Beschreibung: Summary The relatively short duration of the early stages of subduction results in a poor geological record, limiting our understanding of this critical stage. Here, we utilize a 2D numerical model of incipient subduction, that is the stage after a plate margin has formed with a slab tip that extends to a shallow depth and address the conditions under which subduction continues or fails. We assess energy budgets during the evolution from incipient subduction to either a failed or successful state, showing how the growth of potential energy, and slab pull, is resisted by the viscous dissipation within the lithosphere and the mantle. The role of rheology is also investigated, as deformation mechanisms operating in the crust and mantle facilitate subduction. In all models, the onset of subduction is characterized by high lithospheric viscous dissipation and low convergence velocities, whilst successful subduction sees the mantle become the main area of viscous dissipation. In contrast, failed subduction is defined by the lithospheric viscous dissipation exceeding the lithospheric potential energy release rate and velocities tend towards zero. We show that development of a subduction zone depends on the convergence rate, required to overcome thermal diffusion and to localise deformation along the margin. The results propose a minimum convergence rate of ∼ 0.5 cm yr−1 is required to reach a successful state, with 100 km of convergence over 20 Myr, emphasizing the critical role of the incipient stage.

Beschreibung: Summary Although many studies have revealed that the atmospheric effects of electromagnetic wave propagation (including ionospheric and tropospheric water vapor) have serious impacts on Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) measurement results, atmospheric corrections have not been thoroughly and comprehensively investigated in many well-known cases of InSAR focal mechanism solutions, which means there is no consensus on whether atmospheric effects will affect the InSAR focal mechanism solution. Moreover, there is a lack of quantitative assessment on how much the atmospheric effect affects the InSAR focal mechanism solution. In this paper, we emphasized that it was particularly important to assess the impact of InSAR ionospheric and tropospheric corrections on the underground nuclear explosion modeling quantitatively. Therefore, we investigated the 4th North Korea (NKT-4) underground nuclear test using ALOS-2 liters-band SAR images. Because the process of the underground nuclear explosion was similar to the volcanic magma source activity, we modeled the ground displacement using the Mogi model. Both the ionospheric and tropospheric phase delays in the interferograms were investigated. Furthermore, we studied how the ionosphere and troposphere phase delays could bias the estimation of Mogi source parameters. The following conclusions were drawn from our case study: The ionospheric delay correction effectively mitigated the long-scale phase ramp in the full-frame interferogram, the standard deviation decreased from 1.83 cm to 0.85 cm compared to the uncorrected interferogram. The uncorrected estimations of yield and depth were 8.44 kt and 370.33 m, respectively. Compared to the uncorrected estimations, the ionospheric correction increased the estimation of yield and depth to 9.43 kt and 385.48 m while the tropospheric correction slightly raised them to 8.78 kt and 377.24 m. There were no obvious differences in the location estimations among the four interferograms. When both corrections were applied, the overall standard deviation was 1.16 cm, which was even larger than the ionospheric corrected interferogram. We reported the source characteristics of NKT-4 based on the modeling results derived from the ionospheric corrected interferogram. The preferred estimation of NKT-4 was a Mogi source located at 129°04′22.35‘E, 41°17′54.57″N buried at 385.48 m depth. The cavity radius caused by the underground explosion was 22.02 m. We reported the yield estimation to be 9.43 kt. This study showed that for large-scale natural deformation sources such as volcanoes and earthquakes, atmospheric corrections would be more significant, but even if the atmospheric signal did not have much complexity, the corrections should not be ignored.

Beschreibung: SUMMARY Self-consistent modelling of magmatic systems is challenging as the melt continuously changes its chemical composition upon crystallization, which may affect the mechanical behaviour of the system. Melt extraction and subsequent crystallization create new rocks while depleting the source region. As the chemistry of the source rocks changes locally due to melt extraction, new calculations of the stable phase assemblages are required to track the rock evolution and the accompanied change in density. As a consequence, a large number of isochemical sections of stable phase assemblages are required to study the evolution of magmatic systems in detail. As the state-of-the-art melting diagrams may depend on nine oxides as well as pressure and temperature, this is a 10-D computational problem. Since computing a single isochemical section (as a function of pressure and temperature) may take several hours, computing new sections of stable phase assemblages during an ongoing geodynamic simulation is currently computationally intractable. One strategy to avoid this problem is to pre-compute these stable phase assemblages and to create a comprehensive database as a hyperdimensional phase diagram, which contains all bulk compositions that may emerge during petro-thermomechanical simulations. Establishing such a database would require repeating geodynamic simulations many times while collecting all requested compositions that may occur during a typical simulation and continuously updating the database until no additional compositions are required. Here, we describe an alternative method that is better suited for implementation on large-scale parallel computers. Our method uses the entries of an existing preliminary database to estimate future required chemical compositions. Bulk compositions are determined within boundaries that are defined manually or through principal component analysis in a parameter space consisting of clustered database entries. We have implemented both methods within a massively parallel computational framework while utilizing the Gibbs free energy minimization program Perple_X. Results show that our autonomous approach increases the resolution of the thermodynamic database in compositional regions that are most likely required for geodynamic models of magmatic systems.

Beschreibung: Transformation of refractory cratonic mantle into more fertile lithologies is the key to the fate of cratonic lithosphere. This process has been extensively studied in the eastern North China Craton (NCC) while that of its western part is still poorly constrained. A comprehensive study of newly-found pyroxenite xenoliths from the Langshan area, in the northwestern part of this craton is integrated with a regional synthesis of pyroxenite and peridotite xenoliths to constrain the petrogenesis of the pyroxenites and provide an overview of the processes involved in the modification of the deep lithosphere. The Langshan pyroxenites are of two types, high-Mg# [Mg2+/(Mg2++Fe2+)*100 = ∼ 90, atomic ratios] olivine-bearing websterites with high equilibration temperatures (880 ∼ 970 oC), and low-Mg# (70 ∼ 80) plagioclase-bearing websterites with low equilibration temperatures (550 ∼ 835 oC). The high-Mg# pyroxenites show trade-off abundances of olivine and orthopyroxene, highly depleted bulk Sr-Nd (ƐNd = +11.41, 87Sr/86Sr = ∼0.7034) and low clinopyroxene Sr isotopic ratios (mean 87Sr/86Sr = ∼0.703). They are considered to reflect the reaction of mantle peridotites with silica-rich silicate melts derived from the convective mantle. Their depletion in fusible components (e.g., FeO, TiO2 and Na2O) and progressive exhaustion of incompatible elements suggest melt extraction after their formation. The low-Mg# pyroxenites display layered structures, convex-upward rare earth element patterns, moderately enriched bulk Sr-Nd isotopic ratios (ƐNd = -14.20 ∼ -16.74, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7070 ∼ 0.7078) and variable clinopyroxene Sr-isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr = 0.706-0.711). They are interpreted to be crustal cumulates from hypersthene-normative melts generated by interaction between the asthenosphere and heterogeneous lithospheric mantle. Combined with studies on regional peridotite xenoliths, it is shown that the thinning and refertilization of the lithospheric mantle was accompanied by crustal rejuvenation and that such processes occurred ubiquitously in the northwestern part of the NCC. A geodynamic model is proposed for the evolution of the deep lithosphere, which includes long-term mass transfer through a mantle wedge into the deep crust from the Paleozoic to the Cenozoic, triggered by subduction of the Paleo-Asian ocean and the Late Mesozoic lithospheric extension of eastern Asia.

Beschreibung: In severely deficit soil, lentil (Lens culinaris Medic) crop requires micronutrients for increased production. Micronutrient management is, therefore, very important for lentil productivity but mostly ignored. This study was carried out from 2014–2015 to 2016–2017 to understand the effects of zinc (Zn), boron (B), and molybdenum (Mo) on lentil productivity, nodulation, and nutrient uptake and how these elements improve soil micronutrient fertility. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design, and the treatments were replicated thrice. Different combinations of Zn, Mo, and B were contrasted with no application of micronutrients. The treatments were Zn alone (Zn), B alone (B), Mo alone (Mo), Zn combined with B (ZnB), Zn with Mo (ZnMo), B with Mo (BMo), and Zn combined with B and Mo (ZnBMo). Doses of Zn, B, and Mo were 3, 2, and 1 kg ha−1, respectively. In this trial, the highest average seed yield (1807 kg ha−1) and yield increment (44%) was obtained in ZnBMo combined application with macronutrients. Single, dual, and combined application of Zn, B, and Mo had significant effects on yield parameters and yield of lentil (P

Beschreibung: Fishermen are known to try to avoid fishing in stormy weather, as storms pose a physical threat to fishers, their vessels, and their gear. In this article, a dataset and methods are developed to investigate the degree to which fishers avoid storms, estimate storm aversion parameters, and explore how this response varies across vessel characteristics and across regions of the United States. The data consist of vessel-level trip-taking decisions from six federal fisheries across the United States combined with marine storm warning data from the National Weather Service. The estimates of storm aversion can be used to parameterize predictive models. Fishers’ aversion to storms decreases with increasing vessel size and increases with the severity of the storm warning. This information contributes to our understanding of the risk-to-revenue trade-off that fishers evaluate every time they consider going to sea, and of the propensity of fishers to take adaptive actions to avoid facing additional physical risk.

Beschreibung: Changes in adsorbed plus easily acid-soluble phosphorus in soil were generally proportional to the amounts of phosphorus applied. All treatments were applied in the corn year and the phosphorus content of fertilizers was reflected in the per cent total phosphorus in tissue samples of corn and the succeeding oat and clover crops. Application of fertilizers containing increasing percentages of potassium consistently increased the per cent total potassium in com and oats but not in clover. However application rates of manure were invariably reflected in the percentages of total phosphorus and potassium in all crops. With 20 tons of manure corn, oats, and clover contained 0.33, 0.28, and 0.27% phosphorus and 2.51, 1.92, and 1.42% potassium.Application of fertilizers with increasing percentages of nitrogen did not produce significant yield differences in any of the crops. However, use of fertilizers containing increasing percentages of phosphorus or potassium resulted in significantly increased corn yields. All crop yields were significantly higher with 20 tons of manure than with 1000 lb of 4-8-8 fertilizer. With this rate of manure corn produced 3.18 tons of dry matter, oats approximately 52 bu, and hay 2 tons of dry matter per acre.

Beschreibung: Crop rotations on the Canadian prairies commonly include sequences of pulses, oilseeds, and cereals; however, limited information is available regarding the influence that different crop types and sequences may have on direct nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. A 3 yr field study was conducted on a site near Scott, SK, to compare N2O emissions from selected crop phases of rotations containing pea (Pisum sativum L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and canola (Brassica napus L.) and to examine the potential influence of these residues on N2O emissions during the subsequent crop phase. Nitrous oxide losses from N-fertilized canola or wheat crops were generally higher than losses from pea or the control treatments. Nitrous oxide losses from N-fertilized wheat or canola crops grown on pea residue were comparable or lower than losses from N-fertilized wheat or canola crops grown on wheat residues. Cumulative N2O loss over the 3 yr was significantly higher from N-fertilized wheat grown on canola compared with pea or wheat residues. Losses from wheat grown on canola residue were 67% and 56% higher than from wheat grown on pea or wheat residue, respectively. This indicates that the emission factors used to estimate direct N2O loss may need to be adjusted upwards for N-fertilized crops grown on canola compared with wheat or pea residues.

Beschreibung: A new technique involving the use of P32 for the study of plant root development is described. Carrier-free P32 was injected into the stem of wheat plants using a microliter syringe. After allowing 5 days for the P32 to distribute throughout the total plant system, soil–root cores were taken, ashed at 500 °C, and the activity of a pressed soil briquet was determined. The amount of roots measured by the injection method was compared to the more laborious root-washing procedure. Very close agreement between the two methods was realized when the activity of the soil–root cores was recalculated to measure the per cent distribution of the roots within a particular core as compared to the total depth sampled. Preliminary data are reported on experiments designed to estimate the influence of various factors such as phosphate fertilization, soil types, and moisture stress on root development.

Beschreibung: From 16 to 71 per cent of the potassium added to surface samples of 11 Canadian soils was fixed upon wetting and drying into a form not extracted with 1 N neutral ammonium acetate. Fixation in several of the samples increased regularly with increase in their clay content. Samples exhibiting higher or lower fixing capacity than expected on the basis of clay content, usually had correspondingly low or high degrees of K-saturation. Considerable fixed potassium was removed by H-resin or by continuous leaching with 0.01 N HCl, and the rate of release by the latter was particularly high in Podzol samples.Liming of four of the acid samples, to raise the pH to about the neutral point, increased K-fixation slightly. Usually potassium in solution was lower in the limed than in the corresponding unlimed samples.Potassium from chloride and carbonate salts was fixed in similar amounts and there was no different effect of the anions on per cent K-saturation and [Formula: see text] ratio. The concentrations of potassium, and calcium plus magnesium in solution were higher, however, in the KCl- than in the K2CO3-treated samples.

Beschreibung: While some studies indicate no denitrification activity in early spring, others have demonstrated that denitrifiers from temperate region soils can adapt to low temperatures. The aim of the present paper was to study how seasonal changes in temperature affect denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) in a cropped humic gleysol located in a cold temperate climate (Quebec). Soil was sampled monthly during a 16-mo period and DEA was measured at nine temperatures from 2 to 35°C. A seasonal effect of temperature on DEA was significant at all incubation temperatures and was more important in November and in May–June. The effect of temperature on DEA was better fitted with the square root model of Ratkowsky than with the Arrhenius equation. The regression coefficient b (Ratkowsky parameter) varied seasonally with a trend similar to that of DEA. These results show that the Ratkowsky model should be used instead of Arrhenius equation to describe the effect of cold temperature on denitrification. Beschreibung: Zhao, Y., Wang, E., Cruse, R. M. and Chen, X. 2012. Characterization of seasonal freeze-thaw and potential impacts on soil erosion in northeast China. Can. J. Soil Sci. 92: 567–571. Freeze-thaw cycles are regarded as a critical factor inducing and accelerating gully erosion in the Black soil region (Chernozem) of northeast China. The major objective of this study was to identify the effect of seasonal freeze-thaw processes on soil structure relevant to soil erosion. Perched water due to an argillic horizon brings about higher water potential in the top soil, which lowers the soil shear strength and increases the risk of soil erosion by rainfall and surface flow; and the argillic horizon, with a higher clay content, is more vulnerable to freeze-thaw processes, which break or weaken the structure of the argillic horizon, increasing its vulnerability to gully erosion.

Beschreibung: Source materials and manure management may affect compost nutrient availability to plants. A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine the impact of these factors on the N and P release from 23 on-farm and 6 industrial composts. Composts were mixed with the Ap horizon of an Arago sandy loam (Humo-Ferric Podzol), at 200 mg N kg−1, and incubated for 13 wk in glass jars at 35 °C. The soil mineral N content at the end of incubation was the highest from poultry litter, sheep manure, horse manure and vegetable residue sources whereas the fresh solid, beef and young dairy manure composts resulted in high N immobilization. The release of N from the compost organic N fraction was in most cases negative. The soil Mehlich-3 P content at the end of the incubation period was higher from the poultry litter than from any other sources, whereas P was strongly immobilized from week 1 to week 13 in the fresh solid, beef and young dairy manure compost amended soils. Septic tank sludge compost was the least efficient N and P source among industrial products whereas the others showed N and/or P release comparable to most on-farm composts. In dairy manure compost, use of wood in bedding, turning compost windrow, increasing composting duration and sheltering material against precipitation all reduced P immobilization during incubation. Organic N mineralization in soil was only significantly increased by composting duration. This study indicated that the short-term N and P potential nutrient value of composts are dependent upon compost source materials and manure management, and should be based on their inorganic N and P content. Beschreibung: There is a need to provide quantitative relationships that will allow agronomists to estimate accurately the nitrogen-supplying power of soils while taking into account both temperature and soil moisture variations. The procedure for estimating net nitrogen mineralization proposed by Stanford and co-workers was used to determine Arrhenius relationships between the rate constants (k) and absolute temperature (°K) for 33 virgin and cultivated Western Canadian prairie surface (0–15 cm) soils. There was no significant difference in Arrhenius relationship between soils within each soil zone; thus, a single average Arrhenius equation was calculated per soil zone. Average Q10 for the Brown chernozemic soils was 2.75, for the Dark Brown, thin Black and thick Black chernozems, 2.18, and for the Gray luvisols, 2.0. These Q10 values are as high or higher than those reported in other parts of the world and may be related to the degree of degradation of the soil organic matter in these various soils. Culture had no marked effect on Q10 but sandy soils had higher Q10 than loams and clays. An equation for estimating net nitrogen mineralization for the Wood Mountain loam (a Brown chernozem) was tested using data from a previous study. The results were quite satisfactory, especially when the test data were derived under laboratory conditions where moisture was well controlled. The temperature functions presented herein can be used together with moisture functions and potentially mineralizable nitrogen results published earlier to make first estimates of net nitrogen mineralized during the growing season in the soils tested. Beschreibung: A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of dicyandiamide on the transformation of fertilizer nitrogen in Georgia soils. These studies indicated that dicyandiamide inhibited nitrification of ammonium sulphate at all rates utilized. The inhibitory action of dicyandiamide was attributed to its toxic effect on the nitrifying organisms which failed to function in the presence of dicyandiamide. Complete nitrification eventually occurred but only after a long period.Decomposition of dicyandiamide was more rapid in fine-textured Cecil sandy loam containing relatively more organic matter than on the coarse-textured and low organic matter Lakeland sandy soil. Soil texture and organic matter content are two factors that must be considered in evaluating the length of time that dicyandiamide will inhibit nitrification in any given soil.Sucrose apparently provided a quickly available source of energy for soil microorganisms that utilized the dicyandiamide as a source of nitrogen and preventing its inhibiting effect on nitrification. The nitrogen from the dicyandiamide was eventually mineralized as indicated by the higher total ammonium and nitrate nitrogen found at the end of incubation period.

Eroded check (no amendment) and topsoil check (no desurfacing) treatments were left for comparison. One year later, wet aggregate stability at five levels of aggregate pre-wetting was determined. Beschreibung: Seedbed temperature and moisture conditions affect crop emergence rate and stand establishment. A 4 × 4 factorial experiment arranged in a split plot design with four replications was conducted for 3 yr at four sites to measure corn emergence rate and stand establishment while monitoring seedbed temperature and soil water content in situ. Four planting dates, beginning as early as the soil could be worked and every 10 d thereafter, were the main plots and four corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids the subplots. Volumetric soil water content in the top 0.10 m was measured a minimum of two times per week using time domain reflectometry (TDR) and estimated daily using a budget model. Measured and estimated soil water contents were similar (R2 = 0.73) and daily estimated values were used in the analysis. Stand establishment for most planting date-site-years ranged from 80 to 99%. Less than 15% of planting date-site-years had stands below 80%, and they were characterized by soil temperatures at or below 12.5°C combined with high soil water contents (〉90% available water). Rate of emergence was not associated with stand establishment (P 〉 0.10) and could not be predicted from soil temperatures below 12.5°C. Results suggest that reduction in stand establishment under conditions of low (12.5°C) soil temperature and high (〉field capacity) soil water content may be a factor in corn yield reductions associated with reduced or no tillage. Beschreibung: The use of commercially available porous cup soil water samplers for soil solution extraction was evaluated. Ortho-P, (NO3 + NO2)-N and potassium (K) were adsorbed by the porous cup during extraction of soil water samples, but the retention of (NO3 + NO2)-N was minimal. The screening of NO3− by the cup was not obvious. The retention of ortho-P and K was a function of solution concentration and the time of contact between soil solution and the cup. A rest period between extractions, during which samplers remained in contact with solution at zero tension, appeared to enhance phosphorus sorption capacity of the ceramic cup. Furthermore, phosphorus sorption was reversible in nature. The porous cup subjected to high solution concentration initially, released phosphorus when flushed with soilsolution of low concentration. It is recommended that several consecutive soil water extractions be carried out at high (0.6 bar) tension, using high flow rate porous cups. The sample collected in the last extraction should be used to determine true soil water quality.

Beschreibung: As previously reported, four plots varying in soil texture were irrigated, covered, and sampled periodically to determine rates of soil drainage. Four parallel plots in forage crops were irrigated and likewise sampled periodically. In this paper, the moisture values thus obtained were used as a basis for determining the effects of soil depth and rate of consumptive use on the upper limit of available moisture. The application of different rates of consumptive use to the soil moisture curves from the covered plots showed that as the rate of consumptive use increased, the upper limit increased somewhat and the best interval after irrigating to estimate the upper limit decreased markedly. In both the covered and cropped plots the best interval for sampling increased with depth. This was attributed primarily to lower rates of consumptive use with greater depth. It is recommended that, for accuracy, the upper limit be estimated under those soil and consumptive use conditions to which it is to be applied.

Beschreibung: Three fertilizers containing various amounts of citrate- and water-soluble phosphates were compared with superphosphate and rock phosphate in field and greenhouse experiments.Yield curves and equations were calculated and drawn and, from these, availability coefficients were calculated. The phosphate availability of the fertilizers was reduced as the relative amount of water-soluble phosphate they contained was reduced. However, in fertilizers that contained a relatively large amount of water-soluble phosphorus, the citrate-soluble fraction was partly available.

Beschreibung: Climate change in northeastern North America is resulting in warmer winters with reduced snow accumulation. Soils under a thin snowpack are more likely to experience freeze–thaw cycles, disrupting carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) transformations. We conducted a 2 year snow removal experiment in Maine to study the effects of soil freezing on soil C and N processes. O horizon soils were sampled during winter and spring of 2015 and 2016, and they were analyzed for labile inorganic N and water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) concentrations, specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA254), and potential net N mineralization. The winter of 2015 was cold and snowy, whereas 2016 was warm with a shallow, short-term snowpack. Snow removal caused the soils to freeze, but winter rain-on-soil events in 2015 resulted in the formation of concrete frost, as opposed to granular frost in 2016. Concrete frost increased soil ammonium (NH4+-N) and WEOC concentrations and decreased SUVA254, which we attribute to microbial cell lysis. In contrast, granular frost did not alter soil nutrient concentrations, reflecting limited microbial distress. Our study demonstrates that moisture content influences the intensity of soil freezing, highlighting the importance of snowpack depth and winter rain events in regulating winter and spring biogeochemical processes and nutrient availability.

Beschreibung: Spring wheat was grown in the greenhouse on two soil types with nitrogen rates of 0, 30, 60, and 90 pounds per acre and at three moisture levels. Significant increases in yield of grain and significant decreases in percentage protein were obtained with increasing soil moisture on a loam soil but not on a loamy sand. Apparently, the difference in plant growth between soils may be attributed to the greater changes in moisture tension of the loam soil within the moisture ranges studied. The loam soil was also watered less frequently and the high moisture tensions were of longer duration. Both soils showed significant increases in yield of grain with increasing nitrogen fertilizer, but significant increases in percentage protein were obtained on the loam soil only. The largest yield increase per unit of nitrogen was obtained on the loamy sand. The growth of wheat on the loam soil was significantly superior in all respects except for the roots to that on the loamy sand. This is explained on the basis of differences in the original fertility of the two soils before treatment.

Beschreibung: The profiles taken for this study were from an area in which Solonetzic soils and Chernozemic soils were, geographically, closely associated. The chemical and physical characteristics of the Solonetz and Solodized Solonetz profiles clearly distinguished them from the Orthic Chernozemic soils. The B horizon of the Solonetz and Solodized Solonetz soils contained over 15 per cent exchangeable sodium and had a pronounced accumulation of llluvial clay. The C horizons were quite saline, the principal salt being sodium sulphate. The geographically associated Orthic Chernozemic soils exhibited none of these characteristics. The A horizons of these Solonetzic soils were more acid than the A horizons of the Orthic Chernozemic soils. The more strongly leached profiles taken in this study had morphological and chemical characteristics that were intermediate between the above two groups; some were classed as Solods and some as Eluviated Chernozemic soils. It is suggested that the classification of these latter soils warrants further study.

Beschreibung: Chisel attachments for the Noble blade cultivator are described. The attachments on the blade holder are designed to chisel a hardpan subsoil to a fixed depth below the blade cut. They differ from the present commercial types of chiseling equipment in that the shanks are attached to a main sub-frame instead of a top-frame. Thus, chiseling with the blade results in a minimum disturbance of the surface mulch and the mulch moving over the blade covers the subsurface vertical grooves or kerfs made by the chisels. Water infiltration is promoted in the surface soil by the surface mulch and in the subsoil by the kerfs. Cultivation with the chisel attachments on the blade does not interfere with the trash mulch necessary for surface erosion control and improves the physical condition of the subsoil.

Beschreibung: On a clay soil at Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the University of Manitoba, four cropping sequences, namely: 1) fallow wheat; 2) fallow, wheat, wheat; 3) fallow, wheat, wheat, wheat; 4) wheat continuous have been under study since 1919. During the years 1956, 1957 and 1958 a detailed study of the relationship of wheat yields on these sequences to moisture consumption, nitrate accumulation, moisture storage and fertilizer use was undertaken. In general, yields were higher on fallowed than on non-fallowed plots. The higher yields on fallowed plots were, in part, related to nitrate accumulation during the fallow year. The yield differential between fallowed and non-fallowed plots was reduced by mineral fertilizer and manure treatments. Where no fertilizer was used the greatest wheat production in bushels per acre per year was on the fallow-wheat-wheat sequence. When fertilized or manured, the greatest production occurred on the wheat continuous plots.Rapid accumulation of moisture took place between harvest and the following spring. As a result, during years 1956, 1957 and 1958, there was only an average of 0.7 inches more available moisture to a 4-foot depth on fallow plots at seeding time than on plots which had been cropped the previous year.

Beschreibung: The distribution of lipid S (sulpholipids) in 27 soils was examined in relation to factors which influence its abundance in different soil environments. Lipid S was found in all soils examined, but at levels varying from 1.6 to 291 ppm S. Lipid S content was higher in organic horizons than in mineral horizons, and poorly drained soils had higher lipid S than freely drained soils. Highest levels were observed in poorly drained organic soils. Lipid S accounted for a small proportion of total S (0.5–3.5%) and of total lipid (0.03–1.7%). Lipid S levels were on average three times higher than lipid P. Lipid S was significantly correlated with total S, HI-reducible S and organic C. In a regression analysis, 89% of the variation in soil content of lipid S was accounted for by total lipid and total S contents. The distribution of total lipids confirmed previous reports that higher levels were associated with soils having restricted biological activity.

Beschreibung: The aim of this investigation was to suggest a mechanism whereby the basic ferric sulfates, which occur in acid sulfate soils as a result of the microbial oxidation of pyrite in the original sedimentary parent material, can be microbiologically transformed back to pyrite when the soils are flooded. Three basic ferric sulfates were tested and it was found that in the presence of lactate and Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, 10 g of each mineral were reduced within 12 wk to mackinawite (FeS). Additional incubation, to a total of 33 wk, resulted in no further sulfidation. However, in the presence of elemental sulfur, the sulfidation process resumed and mackinawite was soon transformed into greigite (Fe3S4) and then, following an aging process of increased temperature and pressure, pyrite (FeS2) was produced. Under simulated flooding conditions of sea water and decomposing seaweed, the sulfates were converted to a black X-ray amorphous sulfide which is known to change to mackinawite and/or greigite. The ability of H2S-oxidizing bacteria to form elemental sulfur in sedimentary pyrite-forming systems is reviewed and interpreted as a factor in producing the necessary sulfur. Basic aluminum sulfates were stable to microbial reduction. The X-ray pattern for ammoniojarosite was refined.

Beschreibung: In a previous study a nitrogen mineralization model was developed by combining the potentially mineralizable nitrogen (No) with functions representing the effect of temperature and soil moisture on the mineralization rate constant (k). The model performed well in predicting the amount of net nitrogen mineralized during a growing season when soil was incubated in plastic bags placed in incubators or buried in the field. In the present study a similar model was used to estimate net nitrogen mineralized in situ from Wood Mountain loam an Orthic Brown soil at Swift Current, Saskatchewan under (a) summerfallow, (b) cropped-dryland and (c) cropped-irrigated conditions. Model output showed good agreement to field measurements especially for the first 45–60 d, but thereafter tended to underestimate the measured data particularly under cropped-dryland conditions. During a growing season the cropped-irrigated system predicted 69 kg ha−1 net nitrogen mineralized, but 81 kg ha−1 was measured; the corresponding values for summerfallow were 64 and 86 kg ha−1, and for cropped-dryland 36 and 52 kg ha−1, respectively. The model is not dynamic since it does not allow for No to be replenished continuously by nitrogen derived from decomposition of fresh residues and rhizosphere microbial biomass. Net nitrogen mineralized from this source might explain at least part of the underestimate predicted by the model. Other sources of possible discrepancy could be imprecision in measuring the mineralization of nitrogen and in estimating the parameters in the model. Nonetheless, it was established that one of the main shortcomings of the model was that it underestimated the amount of nitrogen mineralized whenever the soil became very dry and was then rewetted by rainfall. This was probably because the latter process resulted in large flushes in mineral nitrogen in situ while in the laboratory estimate of No and k, this effect is not adequately simulated. Statistical analyses were conducted to investigate the inherent associations between concentration of native Zn and concentrations of Fe, Al and Mn as well as sand, silt and clay contents for each textural group independently. Native soil Zn concentration was highly correlated with HNO3 + HClO4-extractable concentrations of Fe (r = 0.80, 0.89 and 0.90 for coarse, medium to fine and very fine-textured soils, respectively) and Al (r = 0.68, 0.79 and 0.81 for coarse, medium to fine and very fine-textured soils, respectively) and with clay content (r = 0.69, 0.64 and 0.82 for coarse, medium to fine and very fine-textured soils, respectively). Significant correlation between Zn concentration and clay content likely resulted from Fe and Al oxides coatings on silicate clays and from a large proportion of free Fe and Al oxides being clay-size. Correlation between Zn and Mn concentration was not significant for medium to fine and very fine-textured soils and was significant at only 5% level for coarse-textured soils. Large quantities of Zn (45–71% of HNO3 + HClO4-extractable Zn) were extracted along with the amorphous and organic complexed Fe and Al from four other Manitoba soils indicating, once again, that Zn was in some manner associated with oxides of Fe and Al in Manitoba soils.

Beschreibung: Dobrovolskaya, Y. V., Chau, H. W. and Si, B. C. 2014. Improving water storage of reclamation soil covers by fractionation of coarse-textured soil. Can. J. Soil Sci. 94: 489–501. Mining operations cause considerable land disturbance as well as the accumulation of large amounts of waste rock. Capping waste rock with a soil cover has proven to be a reliable, long-term reclamation technique. This study examines the question of whether it is possible to attain a considerable increase in water storage capacity (WSC) by separating coarse-textured soil into particle size fractions and layering them into a soil cover. Additionally, this study investigated whether preferential flow can be mitigated by increasing the number of layers and extending the interlayer transitions in fine-over-coarse-textured soil systems. Intermittent and constant infiltration experiments were conducted on homogeneous covers composed of natural sand, two-layered covers with abrupt and gradual interlayer transitions as well as on a four-layered cover under initially air-dry and field capacity (FC) conditions. Water storage capacities were determined from a sampling of soil covers’ water content at FC. Infiltration experiments showed that all tested covers under all initial and boundary conditions had limited susceptibility to preferential flow. Increasing the number of layers and extending the interlayer transitions had a stabilizing effect on the wetting front. Water storage capacities and residence time increased with the increased number of layers. Overall, it has been shown that it is possible to improve the WSC of coarse-textured soil by fractionation and layering of it into a relatively fine-over-coarse soil system.

Soil Sci. 94: 453–461. Snow cover can be reduced by ongoing winter warming in alpine biomes, affecting foliar litter humification, but few reports are available. To quantitatively clarify how early foliar litter humification responds to reduced snow cover in winter, a field litterbag experiment was conducted in an alpine forest in southwestern China. Mass losses, ΔlogK, E4/E6, degrees of humification and humification rates of six typical local foliar litters were investigated at the snow formation, snow cover and snow melt stage under snowpack levels differing in depth (deep snowpack, medium snowpack, thin snowpack, no snowpack) from November 2012 to April 2013. The results indicated that 14–15% of willow (Salix paraplesia), 8–9% of fir (Abies faxoniana), 6–7% of birch (Betula albo-sinensis), 5–8% of cypress (Sabina saltuaria), larch (Larix mastersiana) and azalea (Rhododendron lapponicum) foliar litter was humified, which was about 50% of what decomposed during the first winter. Moreover, the early humification of foliar litter (except for fir and birch) responded positively to the reduced snow cover, but mass loss exhibited negative responses. Such results suggest that reduced snow cover in winter would increase soil carbon or other material sequestration in the scenario of climate change.

Beschreibung: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of various pretreatments on the X-ray identification and quantification of clay-sized minerals from some podzolic B horizons. After soil samples were treated with H2O2 to remove organic matter, clay fractions were dispersed, separated, and freeze-dried. A portion of each clay sample was subjected to the following pretreatments: ultrasonic bath, extraction by citrate-dithionite, extraction by 0.5 N NaOH, and extraction by Tiron. Oriented slides were used for identification and quantification of clay minerals after each pretreatment. The X-ray patterns for ultrasonically dispersed samples were used as a basis for evaluating the effectiveness of the three chemical pretreatments. Tiron pretreatment was found to be the most suitable method for removal of amorphous material from clay separates of podzolic B horizons. The traditional citrate-dithionite method was not effective in removing amorphous Si from clays. The 0.5 N NaOH method is not recommended because it resulted in significant destruction of phyllosilicates and it was not effective in removing amorphous Fe.

Beschreibung: A study designed to assess gaseous losses of N as N2O and N2 from soils of conventional till fields seeded to wheat in the Chernozemic soil region of Saskatchewan, together with limited supporting laboratory investigations, has confirmed that for the May-November period losses were in the vicinity of 3 kg N∙ha−1 or less. In contrast, total losses from a summer-fallowed field were approximately 300% higher. Comparisons at one site were made of N losses from a conventionally tilled and zero-tilled Dark Brown Chernozemic soil seeded to wheat; the total losses of N were twice as high for the zero till as the conventional till treatments. The N2O fluxes were shown to be the result of both reductive (denitrification) and oxidative (nitrification) processes and generally, under the conditions of these field experiments, both occurred simultaneously. This experiment also confirmed that C2H2 inhibited nitrification in a manner very similar to N-serve, a well-known nitrification inhibitor.

Beschreibung: The influence of tillage on net nitrogen mineralization out of sod for two toposequences was estimated by several different methods. A field procedure utilizing small rain shelters to prevent leaching was employed to measure N mineralized in no-tillage (NT) and plowed (CT) treatments for six soils. Potentially mineralizable N and autoclavable N were also determined. An intact soil core procedure was developed to measure N mineralization. With the field procedure, mineralized N was generally greater in the well-drained soils but decreased with decreasing drainage. There was a highly significant interaction between soil type and tillage with greater amounts of N mineralized in the plowed well-drained soils but less in the poorly drained soils when compared to the corresponding no-tillage treatment. The standard laboratory estimates were able to predict differences between soils but did not predict the tillage effect. The development of a laboratory intact core procedure allowed for simulation of tillage effects and was correlated to the field estimates (r = 0.76). More importantly, the tillage ratios for mineralized N (NT:CT), which varied from 1.38 to 0.43, were reasonably correlated (r = 0.73) between the field and intact core procedures. Beschreibung: A survey of the DTPA-extractable Cu levels of approximately 1000 fields representing a large number of soil types in Saskatchewan suggested that, under current cropping systems, Cu deficiencies appear to be concentrated in the Grey Soil Zone. They are especially probable in seven soil associations, which include light Transition of Grey and Brownish-Grey Podzolic soils. Soil criteria for detecting Cu deficiencies in cereal crops cannot be fully documented using conventional calibration tests and techniques. However, data from 21 field trials and a growth chamber study indicated that the critical level of DTPA-extractable Cu in these soils is approximately 0.4 mg∙kg−1 for cereals. Large spatial variability of DTPA-extractable Cu levels has been found to occur in a level field, thus suggesting that the Cu status of a field may not be adequately described by assessing the Cu levels of composite field samples. Carbon and nitrogen in the silt-size fraction and its HCl-hydrolysis residues from coarse-textured Canadian boreal forest soils. Can. J. Soil Sci. 94: 157–168. Improving the capacity to predict changes in soil carbon (C) stocks in the Canadian boreal forest requires better information on the characteristics and age of soil carbon, especially more slowly cycling C in mineral soil. We characterized C in the silt-size fraction, as representative of C stabilized by mineral association, previously isolated in a study of soil profiles of four sandy boreal jack pine sites. Silt-size fraction accounted for 13–31% of the total soil C and 12–51% of the total soil N content. Solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed that silt C was mostly dominated by alkyl and O,N-alkyl C, with low proportions of aryl C in most samples. Thus, despite the importance of fire in this region, there was little evidence of storage of pyrogenic C. We used HCl hydrolysis to isolate the oldest C within the silt-size fraction. Consistent with previous studies, this procedure removed 21–74% of C and 74–93% of N, leaving residues composed mainly of alkyl and aryl C. However, it failed to isolate consistently old C; 11 out of 16 samples had recent 14C ages (fraction of modern 14C 〉 1), although C-horizon samples were older, with Δ14C from –17 to –476‰. Our results indicate relatively young ages for C associated with the silt-size fractions in these sites, for which mineral soil C storage may be primarily limited by good drainage and coarse soil texture, exacerbated by losses due to periodic wildfire.

Extracting topographic characteristics of landforms typical of Canadian agricultural landscapes for agri-environmental modeling. I. Methodology. Can. J. Soil Sci. 91: 251–266. Soil and topographic information are key inputs for many agri-environmental models and there are linkages between soil and topography at the field scale. A major source of soil data is soil databases established based on field soil survey. Although both soil and topographic information are recorded in field soil surveys, the nominal nature of the topographic data has limited their use in agri-environmental models. In this study, we developed a methodology to extract various topographic derivatives and to classify the landscape into landform elements with distinctive topographic characteristics based on detailed analyses of fine resolution digital elevation models. Data obtained from these analyses were used to calculate a representative two-dimensional hillslope of five segments, each with a defined length and slope gradient. A set of modal hillslopes was developed to describe topographic variability. Additional topographic parameters, ratios and indices were calculated to reflect different aspects of topographic characteristics and also to build connections between different agri-environmental models. In particular, a topographic complexity index was developed as a quantitative measure of the degrees of divergence and convergence. This paper describes the methodology using one site as an example. Application of this methodology to other landforms in agricultural land of Canada is reported in a companion paper.

The results obtained by this procedure were markedly higher than those obtained by the gravimetric method following bomb oxidation or oxidative fusion with sodium peroxide and sodium carbonate.Evidence was obtained suggestive of the existence of sulphate-sulphur in association with the organic fraction of these soils.

Beschreibung: Tarnocai, C. and Bockheim, J. G. 2011. Cryosolic soils of Canada: Genesis, distribution, and classification. Can. J. Soil. Sci. 91: 749–762. Cryosols are permafrost-affected soils whose genesis is dominated by cryogenic processes, resulting in unique macromorphologies, micromorphologies, thermal characteristics, and physical and chemical properties. In addition, these soils are carbon sinks, storing high amounts of organic carbon collected for thousands of years. In the Canadian soil classification, the Cryosolic Order includes mineral and organic soils that have both cryogenic properties and permafrost within 1 or 2 m of the soil surface. This soil order is divided into Turbic, Static and Organic great groups on the basis of the soil materials (mineral or organic), cryogenic properties and depth to permafrost. The great groups are subdivided into subgroups on the basis of soil development and the resulting diagnostic soil horizons. Cryosols are commonly associated with the presence of ground ice in the subsoil. This causes serious problems when areas containing these soils are used for agriculture and construction projects (such as roads, town sites and airstrips). Therefore, where Cryosols have high ice content, it is especially important either to avoid these activities or to use farming and construction methods that maintain the negative thermal balance.

Greenhouse gas emissions from pig slurry applied to forage legumes on a loamy sand soil in south central Manitoba. Can. J. Soil Sci. 94: 149–155. Information regarding the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the application of pig slurry to forage in western Canada is limited. This study examined the effects of addition of pig slurry and soil water content with landscape position on nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions from forage legumes [sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa)] on a sandy loam soil in Brandon, Manitoba, over two growing seasons. Pig slurry was surface applied with a rolling aerator-type tine at a rate of 35000 L ha−1 and 38000 L ha−1, providing 62–15–50 and 205–45–86, actual N–P–K kg ha−1, in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Emissions were measured on and between surface bands of the slurry applied to soil. Soil concentrations of [Formula: see text]-N and [Formula: see text]-N, moisture, and temperature were also monitored. In both years, slurry application increased growing season cumulative N2O emissions. Net increase in cumulative N2O-N emissions with slurry treatment ranged from 0.04 to 0.05% of total N ha−1 applied in 2006 but from 0.7 to 0.9% in 2007. The coherence of rapidly increasing N2O emissions following slurry application with decreasing soil [Formula: see text] and increasing [Formula: see text] concentration, in combination with the fact that emissions continued even when soil [Formula: see text] concentrations were undetectable, suggest nitrification and denitrification were sources of N2O. Emissions of CH4 were generally slightly negative and unaffected by addition of slurry. Higher soil water content at lower landscape position did not affect emissions of CH4 but did increase those of N2O in 2007. The current study was conducted at one field location. Examination of slurry additions to additional sites is required for reliable estimation of N2O emissions from slurry applied to perennial legume forages in prairie Canada.

Beschreibung: Fox, C. A. and Tarnocai, C. 2011. Organic soils of Canada: Part 2. Upland Organic soils. Can. J. Soil Sci. 91: 823–842. Soils from upland moderately well-drained environments with thick accumulations (〉10 cm over lithic contact; 〉40 cm over mineral soil) of folic materials (forest materials, branches, roots, and other non-wetland materials) are classified within the Folisol great group in the Organic Order since the 1987 revision of the Canadian System of Soil Classification. The Folisol great group correlates to Folist in Keys to Soil Taxonomy and Folic Histosol in World Reference Base for Soil Resources (FAO). Two subgroups – Hemic and Humic Folisol – account for most Folisols addressing the state of decomposition of folic materials. The Lignic and Histic Folisol subgroups identify specific kinds of folic accumulations. Folisolic soils can occur throughout Canada, in forest, heath, and alpine ecosytems with cool, moist, humid environments, but are most prominent within the Pacific Maritime Ecozone; areal extent in Canada is ∼12 505 km2. The main genetic process is the accumulation and decomposition of the folic materials that lead to distinct F and H horizons. Recommendations for research needs are presented to address outstanding taxonomic questions for: 1. Classification of Folisols as a separate soil order; and 2. Taxonomic protocols for lowercase suffixes for the L, F and H horizons and the need for enhanced humus form classifications. Some of the historical proposals to address these issues are discussed. Folisols should be considered extremely sensitive environmentally because of their markedly different genetic development being dependent on thick accumulations of folic materials, their limited and unique distribution in Canada, and their importance for forest sustainability.

Beschreibung: Our previous work has demonstrated a relationship between polarity index and organic carbon referenced partition coefficients (Koc) of organic chemicals. Here we compare sorption of benzene, toluene, or o-xylene by protein with non-protein organic sorbents. Koc for benzene, toluene, or o-xylene sorption by collagen was much higher than by lignins, humic acid, chitin, or cellulose. Sorption of benzene, toluene, or o-xylene was not only influenced by organic sorbent polarity and functionality (e.g., aromaticity), but also by additional properties which we inferred related to physical conformation of the organic sorbents. In this respect, collagen exhibits unique sorptive behavior toward removal of nonpolar organic chemicals in the aqueous phase, which was not shared by humic acids of similar C, O or N content. Beschreibung: The objective of this study was to compare several methods of estimating the availability of soil nitrogen to plants. Total soil N, organic matter content, mineralized N during a 2 wk incubation at 35 °C, organic N in 6 N HC1, 0.01 M NaHCO3 and 1 N KCl extracts, and finally mineral N extracted by 2 N KCl were evaluated and contrasted with N uptake by sugar beets cultivated on 19 soils in a greenhouse experiment. The relative yield or plant N uptake gave the highest correlation coefficients when both mineral and organic N fractions in soil extract were considered. The incubation methods gave the best correlation coefficient with relative yield (R2 = 0.85**). N contents in NaHCO3 extract were more correlated with relative yield or N uptake than total N, organic matter contents or N extracted by 6 N HCl or 1 N KCl. The UV absorbance values obtained at 205 nm with 0.01 M NaHCO3 extract were also well correlated with relative yield (R2 = 0.78**) and plant N uptake (R2 = 0.66**). At this wavelength, as well as at 220 nm, the absorbance was affected by mineral and organic N contents in the extract. However, at 260 nm, the UV absorbance was only related to organic N in the extract; consequently these absorbance values were less correlated with relative yield (R2 = 0.49**) or N uptake (R2 = 0.27*). Furthermore, the absorbance measured at 205 nm was too sensitive to NO3-N and organic N concentration and this relationship was not linear in the high-N concentration range. The UV absorbance at 220 nm in the 0.01M NaHCO3 extract seemed to be a promising method to evaluate the availability of soil N. Beschreibung: The effects of surface mining for coal on soil respiration (CO2), microbial biomass C, ATP levels, bacterial and actinomycete numbers, bacterial taxa, hyphal lengths, fungal taxa, N2 fixation and decomposition potential were determined for a short-grass prairie site in southern Alberta, Canada. Soil respiration, microbial biomass C, ATP, actinomycete numbers, hyphal lengths and N2-fixing potential were significantly lower in the mined soil particularly when compared to the undisturbed topsoil. Bacterial numbers were, however, greater in the mined soil than in the unmined soil. The bacteria isolated from the undisturbed soil were dominated by Bacillus spp., coryneforms and non-pigmented Gram-negative rods, while those from the disturbed soil belonged mainly to the coryneform group. Mining also caused the fungal community to shift from one dominated by Chrysosporium-Pseudogymnoascus and sterile dark organisms to one dominated by Alternaria spp., Cladosporium spp., sterile dark forms and yeasts. Decomposition of filter paper, 24 mo after their placement in the field, was significantly faster on the disturbed site than on the undisturbed site. Influence of the shape of inter-horizon boundary and size of soil tongues on preferential flow under shallow groundwater conditions: A simulation study. Can. J. Soil Sci. 91: 211–221. Detailed studies of the impact of soil tongues at soil horizon interfaces are very important in understanding preferential flow processes through layered soils and in improving the accuracy of models predicting water and solute transport through the vadose zone. The implication of having soil tongues of different shapes and sizes created at the soil horizon interface on solute transport through a layered soil horizon was studied by simulating water and solute transport using the VS2DI model. This 2-D simulation study reconfirmed that soil tongues facilitate preferential flow, and the level of activeness of tongues may depend on the number of soil tongues, their spacing and distribution. Also, the size of the soil tongues (length and diameter at the interface between the soil horizons) and their shape influence the rate of preferential flow. Increasing tongue length consistently resulted in an increase in solute velocity across the entire soil profile regardless of the tongue shape; for example, a soil tongue of 0.25 m length increased solute velocity by about 1.5 times over a soil profile without tongues, but this increase might be different for soil types and groundwater conditions other than those considered in this study. Narrowing of tongues increased solute velocity, whereas increasing the number of tongues in a wider soil profile decreased the solute-front's velocity. As tongue length increased, the area containing solutes at prescribed elapsed times decreased. An implication of this study is that soil horizon tongue shape and spacing reduce pollutant residence times, hence inter-horizon boundary morphology should be considered when modelling transport through the vadose zone. As well, since the solute velocity behaviours of a triangular- and a wider rectangular-shaped tongue were nearly identical, simply measuring solute velocity in the field will reveal little information on the shape of a soil tongue.

Beschreibung: A study was carried out to quantify the diurnal variation of soil respiration in fallow and barley fields and to assess the impact of atmospheric CO2 concentration (C) and crop photosynthesis on soil respiration rates under field conditions. Soil respiration rate was measured twice a day (06:00 and 13:00 h EST) for 69 consecutive days at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, during the 1990 growing season. Measurements were taken on fallow and under a barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ’Léger’) crop using a dynamic closed chamber system. Crop net photosynthesis was obtained by substracting soil respiration from the vertical CO2 fluxes above the crop which was obtained using the eddy correlation technique. Afternoon soil respiration averaged 22 and 17% more than that in the morning on fallow and barley soils, respectively. No correlation was found between atmospheric CO2 concentration and morning respiration rates. The two daily respiration measurements on fallow soil could be fit to the same function of soil temperature despite important differences in C at the time of measurement. These results indicate that soil temperature might account for the differences in R between morning and afternoon, and that the effect of C need not be considered for the modelling of the soil respiration diurnal cycle. Respiration in soil under barley was 25% lower than in fallow soil. Soil under barley was estimated to have at least 199 g C m−2 more than fallow soil at the time of harvest due to the lower soil respiration and to the input of carbon by barley root residues. High correlations were obtained between crop photosynthesis and soil respiration rates during vegetative and reproductive periods, confirming that the biotic plant component is an important factor controlling soil respiration rates in cropped fields. Beschreibung: A 7-yr study was conducted to determine the effects of repeated annual applications of manure containing softwood shavings (M + S) at 50 t ha−1 on the soil and its productivity, relative to manure without shavings (M) at 50 t ha−1 and nitrogen fertilizer (F) at 67 kg ha−1. The EC, OM, total N and C:N ratio of the soil of the M + S and M + S + F plots to 60-cm depth were not significantly greater than those from the M plots, and in some instances they were significantly less. The NO3-N and total N and available P contents of the soil from the M + S treatment were significantly lower than those from the M treatment. Immobilization of N in the M + S and M + S + F treatments was indicated. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L. 'Gait') straw and grain yields and protein content of the grain were generally greater under the M than under the M + S treatment. When N fertilizer was included in the M + S treatment (M + S + F) the yields were similar to those of M, and the protein content increased. If manure with shavings is used for fertilizer, supplemental N should be applied to offset N immobilization. Key words: Manure disposal, manure, manure with wood shavings, nitrogen, crop yields

Beschreibung: This study investigated the impact of heavy, medium and light grazing of meadow bromegrass an triticale on soil bulk density, relative compaction and penetration resistance. The study was conducted at Lacombe, Alberta, on a Orthic Black Chernozem of loam to silt loam texture. Sampling was conducted in fall 1995, spring 1996, fall 1996 and spring 1997. Core samples to a 15-cm depth were collected for measurement of bulk density and moisture content. Penetration resistance to 15 cm was measured with a hand-pushed cone penetrometer. The standard Proctor test was used to determine maximum bulk density. Relative compaction was the ratio of actual bulk density to the Proctor maximum bulk density expressed as a percentage. Surface (0–2.5 cm) bulk density and penetration resistance were significantly greater under heavily grazed than under medium and lightly grazed meadow bromegrass only for fall 1995. Differences in bulk density, relative compaction and penetration resistance for different grazing intensities in spring and fall 1996 and spring 1997 were either small or not significant. Generally, bulk density decreased over winter in the top 2.5 cm, was not consistent in the 5- to 10-cm depth interval and did not change in the 10- to 15-cm interval. Except in fall 1995, the relative compaction values for all grazing intensities and forage species were less than 90%, a value considered critical for plant growth. Generally, within each grazing level, there were minimal differences in bulk density, relative compaction and penetration resistance under triticale compared to those under meadow bromegrass. Beschreibung: The study was conducted at the Lacombe Research Station, Alberta, on an Orthic Black Chernozem of loam to silt loam texture to investigate grazing impacts and cultivation on near-surface soil compaction. Four forages, smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss 'Carlton'), meadow bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rhem 'Paddock'), a mixture of triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack 'Pika') and barley (Hordeum vulgare L. AC Lacombe), and triticale were used for the study. Each forage species was subjected to heavy, medium and light intensity grazing. Measurements of bulk density and volumetric moisture content for the 0- to 10-cm depth interval were conducted using a surface moisture-density probe between spring 1994 and fall 1996. Relative compaction was calculated as the actual bulk density expressed as a percentage of the Proctor maximum density. Relative compaction values for all treatments and that for the benchmark were less than 90%, which is considered critical for limiting plant growth. Cultivation reduced bulk density under annual forages by only 3% and lowered it under heavy grazed annual treatments most. Regression analysis conducted on the dependence of bulk density to cumulative cow-days indicated a curvilinear relationship. Bulk density increased more rapidly with increasing cumulative cow-days for annuals compared to perennials. From a management perspective, adopting intensive rotational grazing systems for perennial and annual forages may not cause any serious surface compaction problems for soils in this area. Beschreibung: An in-situ constant head well permeameter (CHWP) method employing three or more ponded heads per well was used to establish relationships between field-saturated hydraulic conductivity (Kfs), matric flux potential [Formula: see text], the alpha parameter (α*), soil texture, and soil structure. The relationships were then used to evaluate a single-head CHWP technique which employs representative mean α* values in the determination of Kfs and [Formula: see text]. The measurements were made at several depths on four soils which ranged in texture from loamy sand to silty clay, and in structure from single grain to strong, fine subangular blocky. The Kfs and [Formula: see text] results obtained from the multiple-head CHWP measurements were found to be highly variable within and between soils, yielding within-soil ranges as high as 3.5 orders of magnitude and standard deviation factors (SDF) as high as 5.1. The geometric mean (GM) Kfs and [Formula: see text] values were also highly variable between soils, but they were controlled primarily by soil structure rather than by soil texture or other factors. The α* values, on the other hand, were relatively consistent both within and between soils, yielding an overall SDF of only 1.2 and an overall GM of 11 m−1. Use of α* = 11 m−1 in the single-head CHWP technique yielded Kfs and [Formula: see text] values which were usually accurate to within a factor of 2, and often accurate to within ±25%. These levels of accuracy are within acceptable limits for a field method, considering the many potential sources of error and the extreme range and variability of Kfs and [Formula: see text] normally encountered in the field. Beschreibung: Interest in composting as a means of handling the large volumes of manure generated by southern Alberta beef cattle feedlots has increased in recent years. We measured concentrations of 19 elements (C, N, P, Na, Ca, Mg, K, S, Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, P b , Co, Mo and Cd) in fresh manure, interim-composted manure and finished compost, at four commercial feedlots. Thirteen elements showed increased concentrations (by 26–73%) with composting, while four (C, Cr, Ni and Mo) showed concentration declines. Of the remaining two, the trend in N concentration was feedlot dependent, while Pb was largely unaffected. Total mass loss during composting averaged 54%, which represents a substantial decrease in haulage requirements. Overall average C losses were 61% and N losses 33%. On an equivalent wet weight basis ("as-is"), composting allowed haulage of 56% more N, 84% more P, 91% more Zn, and 76% more Cu than fresh manure, which is advantageous in terms of moving nutrients and trace elements from high to low-loading areas. Our study quantifies nutrient and trace element behaviour during composting, provides comparative data with fresh manure, and helps tailor end-use decisions (e.g., haulage distance, application rate) on the compost product. Beschreibung: A steady-state mass balance model (ForSust), developed to simulate potentially sustainable levels of tree biomass growth and related nutrient uptake dynamics, was applied to 17 jack pine sites across Canada. The model simulates potential tree biomass growth based on nutrient inputs from estimated atmospheric deposition (N, Ca, Mg, K) and soil weathering (Ca, Mg, K), and matches the resulting nutrient supply rates with calculated nutrient demand. Nutrient demand calculations are based on nutrient concentrations in wood, bark, branches, and foliage. Specifically, the model simulates sustainable annual increment (SAI) of biomass growth for stem-only and whole-tree (aboveground biomass) harvesting, and for recurring forest fire conditions. Calculated SAI levels were compared with field-estimated mean annual increments for aboveground forest biomass (MAI). For recurring forest fires, it was found that SAI values, as simulated, corresponded with the MAI field estimates in general. For whole-tree harvesting, SAI was lower than MAI for most but not all sites. For stem-only harvesting, SAI corresponded with MAI, but there was a greater scatter between SAI and MAI values than what appeared to be the case for the recurring forest fire scenario. Beschreibung: Estimation of fertilizer N requirements of crops remains a challenge. Numerous field studies have been carried out to calibrate soil tests against yield response to applied fertilizer N. Synthesis and identification of common crop fertilizer N response across large data sets (years, sites) will allow maximum use of this past work and a framework for comparison of future work. The objective of this paper is to define macro-relationships between the economically optimum fertilizer N rate (EONR) and the yield increase at the EONR defined as the delta yield, ΔYec , for large data sets of 2nd- and 3rd-order estimates of fertilizer N response functions with both 0th and 1st-order rate relationships between fertilizer nitrogen use efficiency and applied fertilizer N. The derived macro-relationships are curvilinear, depend on the price ratio R = the ratio of the (price per kilogram of fertilizer N)/(price per kilogram grain), and are similar to measurements from data sets of corn fertilizer N response functions spanning decades (+20 yr) and representing areas in both the United States and Canada. The macro-relationships appear to be robust and therefore useful for quantifying (post-harvest analysis) soil fertility, crop fertilizer N requirement, and comparison/classification of N response functions.Key words: Response function, prediction, efficiency, economic N rate, corn

Beschreibung: The persistence of 14C-fenoxaprop acid, the major degradation product of the herbicide 14C-fenoxaprop-ethyl, was studied at different controlled temperature and moisture conditions in three Saskatchewan soils. At 85% of field capacity, degradation approximated to first-order kinetics at soil temperatures of 10, 20, and 30 °C, with half-life values ranging from 42 to 5 d. In a clay at 20 °C, there was no effect of moisture, between 50% and 100% field capacity, on the rate of 14C-fenoxaprop acid breakdown. There was no loss of radioactivity after 65-d in air dry soils. In all soils incubated at 85% field capacity and 20 °C with 14C-fenoxaprop-ethyl, uniformly labeled in the chlorophenyl ring, there was evolution of 14CO2 indicating ring fission. Over a 56-d incubation period, 10–15% of the applied radioactivity was released from the treated soils as 14CO2. Extraction with ammoniated acetonitrile recovered 14–19% of the original radioactivity; between 3 and 5% of the initial 14C was incorporated into soil microbial biomass; and 17–25% into the fulvic acid, 7–12% into the humic acid, and 30–34% into the humin soil fractions. Beschreibung: The effluents and ochreous deposits in several partly blocked field drains in Ontario were microbiologically and chemically assayed. The effluents contained several million per milliliter of the iron-oxidizing bacterium Gallionella. Sphaerotilus, a sheath-forming bacterium, was also numerous. Both microorganisms were generally encrusted with amorphous ferric iron oxides. They were also found in the ochreous deposits inside the tiles and also in the deposits adjacent to plugged filters surrounding the tiles. The iron-oxidizing bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was not found. Filamentous structures resembling the iron-oxidizing bacterium Metallogenium were frequently observed but the experimental evidence indicated them to be aggregates of colloidal Fe(OH)3. Calcite, dolomite, quartz and feldspar were common constituents of the effluents and the ochreous deposits. In some cases, one or more of gypsum, plagioclase, chlorite and illite were present. The ochreous deposits were generally high in iron and contained elements normally found in soil. Occasionally the materials were found to contain traces of magnetite. Except for the iron in the silicates the remaining iron was non-crystalline, present as amorphous ferric oxyhydroxide. Amorphous manganese oxide was also found. It was recognized that chemical oxidation might be an important agent in oxidizing the FE+2; however, the results and a literature survey indicated that Gallionella plays a major role. It is theorized that following oxidation, a ferric hydroxide sol is produced, which in the presence of electrolytes forms aggregates of colloidal Fe(OH)3 that combine with microbes and ions in the tile water to produce an amorphous precipitate. In association with carbonates, quartz and clay minerals, the precipitate forms ochreous substances. The paucity of dissolved ferrous and ferric iron, the presence of organic matter and adsorbed anions inhibits crystallization of the amorphous ferric oxyhydroxide. Roots in conjunction with large numbers of Sphaerotilus formed effective plugs.

Beschreibung: Marine clays and silts of the Champlain Sea, or "Leda clays", from several locations in the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Valleys, and a Rideau Clay soil profile developed on this material have been examined. Although the textures of the marine sediments varied, there was a remarkable similarity in the nature of the mineral constituents of the sands, silts and clays; feldspars, quartz, amphiboles, micas, and chlorites occurred in all size fractions. In addition, the clay fractions contained small amounts of montmorillonite and interstratified illite-montmorillonite. All but two of the marine samples were slightly calcareous and, in general, the coarser textured materials contained the highest carbonate content. The main source of the deposits is believed to be the igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Canadian Shield, and there is very little evidence of weathering before, during and since deposition. The Rideau Clay is a moderately well-drained regosolic soil with very little difference in exchangeable cations or mineral composition with depth. The occurrence of illuviation could not be shown conclusively because of apparent depositional differences. The Rideau Clay differed from the marine materials in having no carbonates, in being slightly acid throughout, and in having a greater amount and a different type of interstratified clay minerals.

Beschreibung: The morphological expression of podzolization in four Humo-Ferric Podzols increased in a northerly direction over a distance of approximately 74 km from the north shore of Lake Huron. The transect coincided with changes in both geology and vegetation. All the soils were developed in coarse-textured acid tills whose composition was not significantly different to explain the observed variations in soil morphology. Using quartz as an internal standard, the order of mobility from surface horizons was found to be Mg 〉 Fe = Ca 〉 Na = Al 〉 K 〉 Ti. Pyroxenes, amphiboles, chlorite and albite were the most easily weathered minerals. Protocatechuic, p-coumaric, gentisic and gallic acids were found to be the major phenolic acids in water extracts of soil surface horizons. The content of both phenolic acids and carbohydrates in surface horizons increased as the morphological expression of podzolization increased.

Beschreibung: Experiments were conducted in growth chambers growing wheat on a soil initially low in NO3-N. At rates up to 100 ppm N, grain yield increased with succeeding increments of fertilizer-N. Increased temperatures (15, 21, and 25 C) significantly decreased grain yield in most instances. Low to moderate stress soil moisture regimes (0.3–0.5 and 0.3–2.8 bars) had no significant influence on grain yield. A line was plotted for percent protein vs. added fertilizer-N resulting in a concave protein curve, with an initial decrease in protein to 50 ppm N and a subsequent rise with 100 and 200 ppm N. At each level of N, a close negative correlation was shown between percent protein and grain yield. The effect of increased temperature in increasing percent protein was found to be mostly an indirect effect through the influence of temperature on grain yield. Moisture regime was found to have no significant direct effect on percent protein.

Beschreibung: Palaeosols may: be found in almost every stream valley in southern Alberta. Humic acids from Ah horizons of palaeosols from five locations were examined by infrared spectroscopy, and the percentage of opal phytoliths in the coarse silt (20 to 50 μ) fraction was determined. The combination of the character of the infrared spectra of humic acids and opal phytolith counts was helpful in explaining the genesis of the palaeosols of the five locations. Sometimes the presence or absence of evidence of human occupation will add to the interpretation. In the locations examined, grasslands apparently have been dominant during post-glacial times with invasions of trees, such as Populus spp. and Salix spp., in the moister and more sheltered riparian habitats in this area. Any of these invasions naturally led to a transformation of these grassland soils.

We analyzed the change in total soil organic carbon (SOC) in a long-term fertilization experiment (1980–2008) in a wheat–oat–barley–hay–hay rotation system at the University of Alberta Breton Classical plots. Soil samples were taken in 1980, 1990, 1998, 2003 and 2008 from plots that were fertilized with NPKS and NPK. The objective was to compare the relative effect of S fertilization on the SOC stocks in a S-deficient soil. Long-term S fertilization resulted in an increasing trend in soil organic carbon concentrations over 28 yr when N, P and K supply were adequate. Beschreibung: Free iron determined after extraction by acid ammonium oxalate was found to be abnormally high in various horizons of two Quebec soils containing magnetite, namely: an Orthic Humic Podzol (Pikauba series) and an Orthic Regosol (Malbaie series). When magnetite was removed, prior to the analysis, truer values for free amorphous sesquioxides of iron and aluminum were obtained and could serve to distinguish Podzolic from other classes of soils. The calculated pH-dependent cation exchange capacities were not affected by the presence of magnetite in soils. This last criterion, together with pH in CaCl2, exchangeable aluminum and degree of base saturation, can well serve as a substitute for differentiating Spodic B horizons from other horizons as used in the Canadian taxonomic classification of soils.

Beschreibung: Two separate field experiments were conducted on several crops to determine the effect of selenium (Se) applied to soils with pH levels between 5.7 and 6.6. Tissue Se levels after a single application of Se and lime, were monitored for up to six cropping years or until the tissue Se fell below 0.1 ppm, the level considered to be necessary for animal nutrition. For applications of 1.12 and 2.24 kg Se/ha, the minimal tissue Se concentration (〉 0.1 ppm) was maintained in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) for two cropping years, but with a very sharp decrease for the first 3 yr. In the case of timothy (Phleum pratense L.), tissue levels greater than 0.1 ppm were maintained for 3 yr at the higher rate of Se without lime and up to 5 yr at high soil pH levels. At the applied rates of 0.28 and 0.56 kg Se/ha, the tissue Se levels above 0.1 ppm in timothy, red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) were maintained for one and two cropping years, respectively. In spite of the sharp decrease in plant tissue Se levels, little decrease in total soil Se was noted at rates of 1.12 and 2.24 kg Se/ha after successive croppings of barley and timothy. Although not always significant, liming, in general, increased the plant Se concentration. The Se concentration (log ppm) for tissues (or depletion of Se availability) in the Se-applied plots decreased linearly for at least the first three cropping seasons.

Beschreibung: A preliminary study of the mineralogical composition of the fine sand fractions of 51 samples of tills and stratified sands in northern Ontario was carried out. About 40 different minerals were identified in widely varying amounts. In all but a few samples, feldspar was the most abundant mineral while quartz was never the most abundant. Several deposits containing Palaeozoic limestone and dolomite fragments from the rocks of the James Bay lowlands were quite similar in composition to the calcareous southern Ontario deposits. Other samples, containing large amounts of pyroxenes, shale fragments or "greenstones", differed greatly from similar deposits in southern Ontario. The composition of the fine sand correlated well with the field classification of soils in this region, with a few exceptions.

Beschreibung: The thermal stability and acidic characteristics of Al interlayered montmorillonite were affected by citric acid which was present during its formation. Perturbation to the formation of Al interlayers by citric acid resulted in more gradual loss of their structural water in the 430 °C to 520 °C region at initial citric acid/Al molar ratios of 0.1 and 0.5. The data clearly reveal that, besides hydroxy-Al polymers, hydroxy-Al-citrate complexes adsorbed on the surfaces of montmorillonite very substantially contribute to the total and third buffer range titratable acidity of the clay. Beschreibung: To investigate the content of amorphous forms of Fe, Al and Si in podzolic soils, the B horizons from 54 Humo-Ferric Podzols and 24 Eluviated Dystric Brunisols were sampled in northern Ontario. Dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) Fed and Ald, acid NH4-oxalate Feo, Alo and Sio, Na-pyrophosphate Fep, Alp and Cp and NaOH-tetraborate Fet and Alt were determined on all samples. Feo/Fed ratios averaged 0.87 and suggested that most of the extractable Fe was amorphous. Inorganically bound Fe and Al in pyrophosphate extracts were estimated by addition of NH4OH to the extracts. The amount of inorganically bound Fe, expressed as a percentage of that extracted by DCB, was calculated at 79 ± 23%, whereas the corresponding value for Al was 61 ± 20%. (Alo-Alp)/Sio atomic ratios, plus linear correlation analysis of (Alo-Alp) against Sio, suggested the presence of amorphous aluminosilicates with Al/Si ratios approaching 3. (Feorg + Alorg)/Cp ratios averaged 0.10, a figure near the value suggested by other authors for the maximum amount of Fe and Al bound to organic matter. (Cp/(Fep + Alp) atomic ratios did not appear to be useful in differentiating Podzolic from Brunisolic soils. Key words: Podzolic soils, chemical criteria, extractants

Beschreibung: A speedy and accurate staining procedure for the quantitative determination of the feldspars in rocks and sands of soils is proposed. The minerals are treated, by direct contact, with 48 per cent hydrofluoric acid, and then immersed in a concentrated sodium cobaltinitrite solution which stains the potash feldspars yellow. This treatment is followed by immersion in a buffered hematein solution which stains the plagioclase feldspars purple. The depth of colour on the plagioclase depends upon the position in the isomorphous series. Quartz, gypsum and calcite are not affected by the treatment. The quantity of the potash and plagioclase feldspar present is then easily determined by grain counts under the petrographic microscope.

Beschreibung: Three widely separated Alberta fields were sampled intensively in a grid pattern, to estimate the effect of number and depth of cores and of field size on the accuracy of composite samples used in soil test analyses. Estimates were obtained by both statistical and computer simulation techniques and both gave similar results. Accuracy of composites increased with the number of cores, but even with as many as 30 cores per field there was still considerable inaccuracy in values for N and P. In the most variable field, a composite of 20 cores for the 0- to 15-cm depth predicted the true field mean within ± 10% for N, P and K only 47, 56, and 82 times out of 100, respectively. Corresponding values for the least variable field were 77, 70, and 98. Conductivity and pH were more accurately estimated with the same number of cores. Samples taken at the 15- to 30-cm and 30- to 61-cm depths showed greater coefficients of variability in N and P than did samples from the 0- to 15-cm depth. However, samples composed of the 0- to 30-cm and 0- to 61-cm depths were similar to the 0- to 15-cm depth in variability. The number of cores needed for a given level of accuracy increased very little with size of field, up to a maximum of 40 hectares used in this study. Degree of variation changed considerably from field to field, but even more from one position to another within the same field.

Beschreibung: The presence of magnesium-bearing calcites in secondary carbonate accumulation layers of soils is shown to be associated with soluble Mg++/Ca++ ratios of one or greater in the attendant or underlying layers. The dissolution of both calcite and dolomite within the solum and the precipitation of only calcite in the developing Cca leads to a buildup of Mg++ in the soil solution. If leaching depth is considerably below the Cca horizon, the secondary calcite is Mg free. If leaching is restricted to relatively shallow depths (2–4 m), the buildup of soluble salts and the increased soluble Mg++/Ca++ ratio which result are conducive to the precipitation of Mg-bearing calcites. Soluble salt distribution within a glacial till landscape suggests that surface runoff waters and snow accumulation in depressions are more important aspects of water distribution in such landscapes than is lateral movement within the soil itself. The accumulation of soluble salts in the 2 to 4-m zone of upland soils and the complete lack of salts to greater depths in depressions ties in well with the presence or absence of Mg-bearing calcites. The implications of the nature of the carbonates to soil salinization processes are indicated.

Beschreibung: This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of tillage and fertilization practices on soil organic carbon (organic-C) and the distribution of phosphorus between inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) pools in a clay and sandy loam soil under a continuous corn (Zea mays L.) production system. Tillage treatments were established in the fall of 1981. The soils for this study were sampled (0- to 10-cm and 10- to 20-cm) in June 1988. Treatments consisted of three types of tillage: (i) conventional (CT): fall moldboard ploughing with two spring diskings; (ii) reduced (RT): with either fall chisel ploughing (1981–1986) or no fall tillage (1987) followed by one spring disking, and (iii) no-till (NT); and two types of fertilization (i) inorganic (I): 170 kg N ha−1. 80 kg P2O5, ha−1, 75 kg K2O ha−1, and (ii) organic fertilizer (O): dairy manure applied to give 170 kg N ha−1 plus 80 kg P2O5, ha−1 from inorganic P fertilizer. Even though a lime application was made in the fall of 1985, soil pH was significantly lower in the I fertilizer treatments. Reduction of tillage intensity resulted in a lower pH in the surface layer of the sandy loam soil. Tillage did not affect soil organic-C, or total soil Po (soil-Po) in either soil. Compared with the I fertilizer treatment, the O fertilizer treatment resulted in increased levels of soil organic-C and soil-Po only in the sandy loam soil. Labile levels of Po in the soil were not affected by treatments. Increased soil-Po levels possibly resulted from an increase in stable Po complexes. Moderately labile Po levels were not affected by treatments in the clay soil. In the sandy loam soil, O fertilization decreased moderately labile Po levels in the surface layer of the NT treatment, and increased this P fraction in the 10- to 20-cm soil layer of the RT and CT treatments. In the surface layer of both soils, labile levels of Pi were greater for the O fertilization treatment (approximately 40 and 47% higher for the clay and sandy loam, respectively), and were lower under CT. Increased labile Pi levels were associated with the O fertilizer treatment in the 10- to 20-cm depth increment in the sandy loam soil only, suggesting a greater downward movement of P with manure applications. Beschreibung: The effects of conventional stem-only and whole-tree harvesting on nutrient losses in biomass removal and in leachate fluxes over a 3-yr period after cutting three white birch stands in central Newfoundland were determined. Losses of nutrients in biomass were proportionately greater with more intensive harvesting as tree components with higher nutrient concentrations (branches, foliage) were removed. Stem-only harvesting removed 126, 9, 51, 126 and 23 kg ha–1 of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in biomass, respectively. Whole-tree harvesting led to a 19% increase in biomass removal as compared to stem-only harvesting, but nutrient removals with whole-tree harvesting increased by 127% for N, 138% for P, 151% for K, 72% for Ca and 90% for Mg. Nutrient losses in deep percolation of soil solution during the first 3 yr after harvesting were generally greater following stem-only than whole-tree harvesting. This may be the result of increased leaching from slash, increased mineralization beneath slash, and retardation by slash of the successional vegetation that could act as a nutrient sink. In the first 3 yr following harvesting, leaching losses after whole-tree harvesting were 4, 0.2, 8, 23 and 7 kg ha–1 of N, P, K, Ca and Mg, respectively, as compared with 9, 0.1, 7, 28 and 9 kg ha–1 of N, P, K, Ca and Mg after stem-only harvesting. Nutrient losses in leachate were generally small compared to losses in biomass removal. Beschreibung: The main objective of this study was to compare the recovery of 15N-labelled fertilizer by different methods of N application and N rates. Field experiments were carried out for 3 yr at Saint-Hyacinthe (Saint-Damase, Du Contour, Sainte-Rosalie soils) and at Saint-Lambert, Lévis (Le Bras soil). Grain corn (cv. Pride K228, 2700 CHU) and silage corn (cv. Hyland 3251, 2300 CHU) were grown at Saint-Hyacinthe and Saint-Lambert, respectively. In 1988 and 1989, field trials were arranged in a randomized complete bloc design consisting of five treatments in three replications: control 0 N and four split application methods of N fertilizer. Labelled 15NH4 15NO3 fertilizer was applied either banded at planting as starter (D), broadcast and incorporated before planting (Vs) or sidedressing between rows at V6 to V8 stages of corn (Bp). In 1990 field trials, treatments consisted of four N rates (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg N ha−1) labelled with 15NH4 15NO3. The effect of N rates on yield and N uptake by corn was significant in all years. However, the effect of application methods was significant only on the soil Du Contour in 1989 where corn grain yield was highest when N fertilizer was split as starter and sidedress band. The CUR of N fertilizer applied broadcast before planting (42 to 48%) was generally lower than sidedressing band application (43 to 54%). N fertilizer recovery in the starter showed also high CUR values (45 to 60%). Consequently, it is recommended to split N fertilizers and apply in band to increase efficiency for grain corn. The CUR values decreased with N rates only in Le Bras soil in 1990. Residual N fertilizer increased from 27 to 103 kg N ha−1 for 60 and 180 kg N ha−1 rates, respectively. Consequently, the environmental impact of N fertilization may increased with high N rate. Key words: Grain corn, silage corn, 15N recovery, fertilizer N split application

Beschreibung: Biswas, A., Chau, H. W., Bedard-Haughn, A. K. and Si, B. C. 2012. Factors controlling soil water storage in the hummocky landscape of the Prairie Pothole Region of North America. Can. J. Soil Sci. 92: 649–663. The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) in North America is unique hummocky landscape containing hydrologically closed topographic depressions with no permanent inlet or outlet. Knowledge about the controls of soil water distribution in the landscape is important for understanding the hydrology in the PPR. In this study, we investigated the correlation between soil water storage and different controlling factors over time. Time domain reflectometry and neutron probe were used to measure soil water storage up to 1.4 m depth over 4 yr along a 576-m long transect at St. Denis National Wildlife Area, Saskatchewan, Canada, which represent a typical landscape of the PPR. Soil and vegetation properties were measured along the transect, and various terrain indices were calculated from the digital elevation map of the study area. Soil texture (e.g., correlation coefficient, r=−0.57 to −0.73 for sand) provided one of the best explanations for the variations in soil water storage by controlling the entry and transmission of water within soil in the semi-arid climate of study area. Bulk density (r=−0.22 to −0.56), depth of A horizon, (r=0.18 to 0.49), C horizon (r=0.29 to 0.69), and CaCO3 layer (r=0.31 to 0.79) influenced the water transmission through soil and were correlated to soil water storage. Beside soil properties, topographic wetness index (r=0.47 to 0.67), slope (r=−0.41 to −0.56), convergence index (r=−0.29 to −0.60), and flow connectivity (r=0.27 to 0.60) were also correlated to soil water storage. However, multiple linear regressions showed a consistent high contribution from soil properties such as sand, organic carbon, depth of CaCO3 layer, and bulk density in explaining the variability in soil water storage. A substantial contribution from topographic variables such as wetness index, gradient, and solar radiation was also observed. Therefore, unlike other geographic regions, the soil-water storage variations in the PPR are controlled by a combination of soil and terrain properties with dominant control from soil characteristics at the field scale.

Beschreibung: Drury, C. F., Reynolds, W. D., Yang, X. M., Tan, C. S., Guo, X., McKenney, D. J., Fleming, R. and Denholme, K. 2014. Influence of compost source on corn grain yields, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide emissions in southwestern Ontario. Can. J. Soil Sci. 94: 347–355. The impacts of compost type on corn grain yields over 10 yr and N2O and CO2 emissions in the first 3 yr after compost application were evaluated on a Brookston clay loam soil in Woodslee, ON. The treatments included yard waste compost (YWC), kitchen food waste compost (FWC), and pig manure compost (PMC), which were applied once in the fall of 1998 to field plots at a rate of 75 Mg ha−1 (dry weight basis) and no further applications occurred thereafter as well as a fertilized control treatment. Large application rates were examined to see if the various compost sources could have a lasting effect on soil C storage, N2O and CO2 emissions and corn yields. Compost application significantly increased corn grain yields by 12.9 to 19.4% over 3 yr. However, after 10 yr, FWC was the only compost source which significantly increased yields by 11.3% compared with the fertilized control. Emissions of N2O and CO2 varied with compost type, soil water content and time. Greater N2O emissions occurred in 1999 from PMC (5.4 kg N ha−1) than YWC (2.7 kg N ha−1) and FWC (1.3 kg N ha−1); however, the N2O emissions from the PMC were less than from YWC and FWC in 2001. The 3-yr average N2O emissions were significantly greater with PMC (2.7 kg N ha−1) and YWC (2.5 kg N ha−1) compared with the control (1.5 kg N ha−1). Hence, the timing of N2O emissions varied by compost type, but the overall losses were similar as the higher N2O losses in the first year with PMC were offset by the reduced losses with PMC in the third year. Significantly more CO2 was produced from the FWC in 2000 and from PMC in 2001 than the control.

Beschreibung: Emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O-N) from manure applied to annual crop (AC) and perennial forage (PF) are poorly quantified for the Canadian Prairie Region. This study used static chambers over two growing seasons to assess soil N2O-N emissions from solid pig manure (SPM) and liquid pig manure (LPM) in AC and PF systems on a sandy loam soil. In 2011, when manure application coincided with hot and wet soil conditions, both manure treatments in AC induced N2O-N emission episodes a week later. In the PF, however, only LPM resulted in an N2O-N emission peak after 8 d. In 2012, manure application did not coincide with hot and wet soil conditions, and emission rates were smaller. Overall, the effect of manure type was inconsistent. In 2011, cumulative emissions in AC from LPM and SPM were 5.8 and 7.8 kg N2O-N ha−1, respectively, and in PF were 10.7 and 0.6 kg N2O-N ha−1, respectively. In 2012, cumulative emissions were

Field investigations showed that there was a decrease in the infiltration rate of burned soils and that there was an increase in soil temperature at a depth of 3 inches in burned soils.

Beschreibung: The formation of nitrate in eight grassland soils of the Kamloops, British Columbia, area was studied using a laboratory incubation technique. All the accumulative totals of nitrate nitrogen produced by these soils were low and suggest that the amount of nitrate formed may be inadequate for optimum plant growth. The desert-like soils, although they are regarded as being members of the Brown great soil group, released the most nitrate nitrogen. The Shallow and Degrading Black soils released nitrate in intermediate amounts while the Brown and Dark Brown soils produced the smallest quantities. The correlations between the accumulative total of nitrate released during incubation with: C/N ratio, total nitrogen and organic matter, were not highly significant. Poor correlation was obtained in the comparison between the accumulative total nitrate formed and the forage produced during the period 1954–1957.

Beschreibung: Pennock, D., Bedard-Haughn, A. and Viaud, V. 2011. Chernozemic soils of Canada: Genesis, distribution, and classification. Can. J. Soil Sci. 91: 719–747. Chernozemic soils in Canada have a characteristic biomantle that fully expresses the effect of organisms on soil formation. Additions of large amounts of below-ground biomass from grasses are transformed into complex organic compounds through the activities of meso- and macro-fauna, microbial degradation and combustion by fires. Degradation is regulated by (a) climatic influences on plant inputs and microbial activity, (b) the chemical and biochemical nature of the residues, (c) encapsulation of organic matter within aggregates by soil micro-faunal activities and freeze–thaw processes and (d) protection against decomposition by Ca2+ and clay minerals. These organic compounds are mixed with the mineral matrix through the action of organisms from mites to badgers. Regional differences in the regulators cause differences in soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and the colour value of the surface Chernozemic A horizon. The storage of SOC is lowest in the Brown soil zone (≈60 to 80 Mg ha−1) and greatest in the Black soil zone (≈120 to 150 Mg ha−1); this corresponds to a decrease in the annual water deficit from ≈200 mm (Brown) to 70 to 100 mm (Black). Where soil CaCO3 contents are high either through initial concentration in the parent material or by the precipitation of secondary CaCO3, substantially higher SOC storage than the regional norms can result. A repetitive catenary pattern occurs throughout the region. The primary controls on this pattern are hydrological – a lateral component to water flow in hillslopes leads to more developed horizonation downslope, and discharge surrounding wetlands causes precipitation of secondary carbonate minerals and more soluble salts in a fringe surrounding the wetlands. Chernozemic landscapes have been highly altered by humans through their conversion to agricultural production. Loss of the dense root network of the native grasslands causes a substantial decrease in SOC. This loss of carbon and reduction in A horizon thickness is accelerated by erosion; the effects of tillage erosion are now recognized as being ubiquitous through the agricultural region. The substantial amounts of SOC storage and our ability to increase storage through altered management practices make these soils a particular focus of interest in a future made more uncertain by the possibility of human-induced climatic change.

Beschreibung: Long-term manure application could increase soil earthworm abundance in cultivated soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of 14 yr (1977–1991) of manure and NPKMg fertilizer on earthworm populations, soil structural stability, N mineralization (NO3) and biological activity (CO2) on a Le Bras clay loam (Humic Gleysol) situated at St-Lambert, Quebec. The field experiment, in a split-plot design, consisted of two manure rates (0 Mg, 20 Mg ha−1) as principal treatments with secondary treatments receiving mineral fertilizer (NPKMg) and a control. These treatments were carried out over a 4-yr crop rotation of silage corn, (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and canola (Brassica campestris L.). Soil and earthworm sampling was done in fall 1991 under corn. Compared to mineral fertilizer treatment, long-term application of manure increased earthworm populations. However the interaction between the treatments of mineral fertilizer and of manure was not significant. Of the earthworms extracted by formalin and hand sorting, Aporrectodea genus was dominant in soil, representing 98–100% of the population. Several Allolobophora chlorotica and Lumbricus juveniles from the genus Lumbricus were found only in manured plots. Soil water stable aggregates and biological activity (CO2) were both increased by manure application. Mineral fertilizer application had no significant effect. A strong correlation was obtained only between earthworm abundance and biological activity (CO2). The results indicate that 14 yr application of solid cattle manure improved soil earthworm populations and diversity, biological activity (CO2) and structural stability compared to fertilizer treatments and the control. Beschreibung: Mineralized soil N from meadow soils will become an important source of N to following crops in low-input biological cropping systems. The C and N mineralization rates of soils from 34 sites situated on dairy farms recently converted to biological cropping systems were evaluated in a 56-wk incubation at 25° C. Data on C and N mineralization were fitted to first-order kinetic models. Carbon and N generally presented similar patterns of mineralization. Total mineralized N (Nm) ranged between 88 and 235 mg N kg-1 soil, which represented 6.6 to 22% of total N. Carbon mineralization (Cm) rate was between 11 and 17 times greater than N mineralization (1523–2638 mg C kg-1 soil ) and C mineralized represented 9 to 19% of soil organic C. The rate constant was between 0.05 and 0.123 wk-1 for C (kC) and ranged from 0.032 to 0.088 wk-1 for N (kN). The half-life for C (TC0) and for N (TN0) varied, respectively, between 5.6 and 13.3 wk and between 15 and 28 wk. Results show that about 80% of total mineralized C and N were mineralized during the first 25 wk of incubation, corresponding to the mineralizable fraction of soil organic matter (OM). Data on C and N mineralization have been adjusted using a bicompartmental model (active and recalcitrant pools), which corresponded, respectively, to first-order and exponential equations. Total mineralizable C and N (Cm and Nm), and the C and N rate constants (kC and kN) were strongly related, whereas the rate constants of the recalcitrant pools (hc and hN) were negatively related to these parameters. This suggests that C and N mineralizable pools were independent of the humified stable OM (recalcitrant pool). Carbon and N mineralization parameters were positively related to the soil clay and silt contents, but inversely to the sand levels.
