    Description: On 7 September 1999 a magnitude MW55.9 earthquake occurred in the Athens area of Greece producing a subsidence of 6–7 cm detected by radar interferometry. This study introduces a processing technique, which produces a clear deformation pattern of the earthquake, mostly released from artefacts due to orbital effects, unwrapping cycle slipping errors and atmospherics disturbances. A set of 17 ERS-1 and ERS-2 SAR images acquired between December 1997 and January 2001 has been used. The contribution of each artefact to the interferograms was calculated, both in the frequency and spatial domains.

    Description: Since the compilation of the last version of the Italian Macroseismic Intensity Database (DBMI04), a number of new studies has been published. With the aim of updating both the database and the catalogue, recent studies published after the CPTI04 have been inventoried, together with old studies not used for the catalogue and records from previous parametric catalogues. The resulting inventory, called ISMI (Inventory of Italian Macroseismic Studies) lists nearly 10000 studies related to more than 3500 earthquake. The analysis of the inventory allowed to: i)compare the studies and made the best choice for the catalogue compilation; ii)trace back the reason why some earthquakes are no longer in the present catalogue (fake events, etc.). The inventory will be published in the future through a dedicated website. The selected studies provided about 24000 intensity data points (IDPs) for 500 earthquakes either unknown or previously not supported by macroseismic data. More than 31000 IDPs derive from studies that are new or up-dated with respect to what is in DBMI04. The new release of the database (DBMI08) contains as a whole nearly 85000 IDPs related to more than 1500 earthquakes, used for updating the Italian catalogue (CPTI08). These data come from a varied set of studies and are heterogeneous particularly as regards the georeferencing of the macroseismic observations. Each in-tensity data point has been associated to a place listed in a standardized geographical reference directory, ex-pressly compiled, according to a procedure developed during the compilation of DBMI04. The reliability of the georeferencing has then been carefully checked. The database is published on-line through a web interface specifically developed for DBMI04, updated for the new release.

    Description: I modelli di pericolosità sismica tradizionali utilizzano ipotesi semplificate di distribuzione omogenea della sismicità nello spazio, e stazionaria nel tempo. Negli ultimi decenni, grazie anche ad una aumentata disponibilità di osservazioni geologiche e paleosismologiche, stanno prendendo rilievo modelli più strettamente collegati alla fagliazione sismogenetica, che tengano in considerazione anche le variazioni temporali legate al ciclo sismico. In Italia, queste applicazioni sono prevalentemente a carattere metodologico ed esplorativo, dato che solo un limitatissimo numero di strutture sismogenetiche dispone di dati osservativi indispensabili per questo tipo di analisi (ad es. Pace et al., 2006; Peruzza, 2006; Peruzza et al., 2008). Tra queste, le faglie etnee rappresentano un caso di studio particolare per entità, tipologia e frequenza della fagliazione superficiale e della sismicità associata (Azzaro, 1999). Per tale motivo, nell’ambito del progetto DPC V4-Flank finalizzato alla valutazione dell’hazard connesso alla dinamica di fianco all’Etna, abbiamo applicato ai principali sistemi di faglie attive dell’edificio vulcanico, le tecniche di stima dell’hazard basate sulle ipotesi di terremoto caratteristico e dipendenza temporale dall’ultimo evento. A partire dal modello sismotettonico (Azzaro, 2004) e dal catalogo sismico di riferimento (CMTE, Azzaro et al., 2000, 2002, 2006), sono state analizzate le sequenze di eventi sismici attribuibili alle diverse strutture sismogenetiche e ricostruite le loro storie sismiche. Una caratteristica comune nello stile di rilascio sismico di molte faglie è la presenza di terremoti maggiori e minori alternati nel tempo, in una sorta di cicli sismici intervallati da brevi periodo di ritorno (decine di anni) (Fig. 1 in alto). E’ evidente, per alcune strutture sismogenetiche contigue, anche la loro attivazione alternata nel tempo (Fig. 1 in basso). Per ogni singola faglia sono stati quindi verificati i possibili modelli di occorrenza applicando distribuzioni diverse in accordo con ipotesi stazionarie o time-dependent (Fig. 2). I risultati preliminari suggeriscono una certa periodicità degli eventi maggiori associati alle diverse strutture, rappresentata dal coefficiente di variazione sul dataset degli intertempi. Dal momento che le stime di hazard sismico variano in relazione al diverso tempo trascorso dall’ultimo terremoto su ciascuna struttura, applicando un processo con memoria attraverso una funzione di distribuzione del tipo BPT, è stato calcolato l’incremento o la diminuzione della probabilità di un successivo evento sismico, rispetto alle ipotesi poissoniane. Gli sviluppi previsti sono mirati a comprendere anche il ruolo delle strutture sismogenetiche analizzate nei processi geodinamici locali.

    Description: Topography of the Apennines chain resulted from the combined action of tectonic displacements (related to thrusting and high-angle faulting), large-scale uplift and surface processes. In such mountainous settings, where strong erosion is often responsible for incomplete stratigraphic records of surface evolution of thrust belts, geomorphological analysis helps quantify these processes and provide a framework for interpreting the geologic history of these regions. We studied a 400 km2 area of the Central-Southern Apennines, covering Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise regions, by means of morphostructural analysis. This sector of the chain emerged during the Lower Pliocene and suffered a long-lasting erosion. Our study reveals a high relief landscape dominated by high-standing, resistant carbonates forming structure-controlled landforms (morphosculptures), and valleys underlain by erodible siliciclastics. Quaternary deposits are few and scattered, and they give poor constraints for the recognition of ancient base-levels. However, this study defines and identifies several upland erosional surfaces (paleosurfaces) that may be linked to ancient base-levels. On the basis of cross-cut relationships between paleosurfaces and structural landforms, we outlined a possible long-term geomorphological evolution of the study area. Most of the local tectonic displacements in this sector of the chain took place during Miocene and Pliocene, by means of thrusting and strike-slip faulting, whereas only localized extensional tectonics occurred during Quaternary times. Since the Pliocene, differential erosion promoted exhumation of carbonates and deep incision of pre-existing erosional surfaces. This strong erosion can be related to a regional base-level lowering promoted by large-scale uplift of the axial sector of the Central-Southern Apennines.

    Description: The experimental estimate of radio waves scintillation, caused by plasma density irregularities in the ionosphere, is usually attempted by means of scintillation indices which are essentially standard deviations of stochasticly fluctuating parts of the received radio wave intensity and phase. At high latitudes, provided that the propagation problem may be modelled by means of the weak scattering theory, the typical scintillation indices S4 and σφ depend on a geometrical factor which introduces some amplifications on their values. Scintillation indices S4 and σφ measured at auroral latitudes are estimated by means of different boundary detrending conditions and the geometrical effect on those detrending conditions is investigated. In the case of the polar Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite links considered here, high phase with low intensity scintillation events do not seem to be related to geometrical effects only, but rather to misleading data detrending.

    Description: Papandayan is a stratovolcano situated in West Java, Indonesia. Since the last magmatic eruption in 1772,only few hydrothermal explosions have occurred. An explosive eruption occurred in November 2002 and ejected ash and altered rocks. The altered rocks show that an advanced argillic alteration took place in the hydrothermal system by interaction between acid fluids and rocks. Four zones of alteration have been defined and are limited in extension and shape along faults or across permeable structures at different levels beneath the active crater of the volcano. At the present time, the activity is centered in the northeast crater with discharge of low temperature fumaroles and acid hot springs. Two types of acid fluids are emitted in the crater of Papandayan volcano: (1) acid sulfate-chloride waters with pH between 1.6 and 4.6 and (2) acid sulfate waters with pH between 1.2 and 2.5. The water samples collected after the eruption on January 2003 reveal an increase in the SO4/Cl and Mg/Cl ratios. This evolution is likely explained by an increase in the neutralization of acid fluids and tends to show that water–rock interactions were more significant after the eruption. The evolution in the chemistry observed since 2003 is the consequence of the opening of new fractures at depth where unaltered (or less altered) volcanic rocks were in contact with the ascending acid waters. The high δ34S values (9–17‰) observed in acid sulfatechloride waters before the November 2002 eruption suggest that a significant fraction of dissolved sulfates was formed by the disproportionation of magmatic SO2. On the other hand, the low δ34S (−0.3–7‰) observed in hot spring waters sampled after the eruption suggest that the hydrothermal contribution (i.e. the surficial oxidation of hydrogen sulfide) has increased.

    Description: An empirical Green’s function (EGF) technique has been developed to detect the rupture velocity history of a small earthquake. The assumed source model is a circular crack that is characterized by a single and unipolar moment rate function (MRF). The deconvolution is treated as an inverse problem in the time domain, which involves an assumed form of the moment rate function (MRF). The source parameters of the MRF are determined by adopting a global nonlinear inversion scheme. A thorough synthetic study on both synthetic and real seismograms allowed us to evaluate the degree of reliability of the retrieved model parameters. The technique was applied to four small events that occurred in the Umbria-Marche region (Italy) in 1997. To test the hypothesis of a single rupture process, the inversion results were compared with those arising from another EGF technique, which assumes a multiple rupture process. For each event, the best fit model was selected using the corrected Akaike Information Criterion. For all the considered events the most interesting result is that the selected best fit model favors the hypothesis of a single faulting process with a clear variability of the rupture velocity during the process. For the studied events, the maximum rupture speed can even approach the P-wave velocity at the source, as theoretically foreseen in studies of the physics of the rupture and recently observed for high-magnitude earthquakes.

    Description: Five non-eddy-resolving oceanic general circulation models driven by atmospheric fluxes derived from the NCEP reanalysis are used to investigate the link between the Gulf Stream (GS) variability, the atmospheric circulation, and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Despite the limited model resolution, the temperature at the 200-m depth along the mean GS axis behaves similarly in most models to that observed, and it is also well correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), indicating that a northward (southward) GS shift lags a positive (negative) NAO phase by 0–2 yr. The northward shift is accompanied by an increase in the GS transport, and conversely the southward shift with a decrease in the GS transport. Two dominant time scales appear in the response of the GS transport to the NAO forcing: a fast time scale (less than 1 month) for the barotropic component, and a slower one (about 2 yr) for the baroclinic component. In addition, the two components are weakly coupled. The GS response seems broadly consistent with a linear adjustment to the changes in the wind stress curl, and evidence for baroclinic Rossby wave propagation is found in the southern part of the subtropical gyre. However, the GS shifts are also affected by basin-scale changes in the oceanic conditions, and they are well correlated in most models with the changes in the AMOC. A larger AMOC is found when the GS is stronger and displaced northward, and a higher correlation is found when the observed changes of the GS position are used in the comparison. The relation between the GS and the AMOC could be explained by the inherent coupling between the thermohaline and the wind-driven circulation, or by the NAO variability driving them on similar time scales in the models.

    Description: A seismic rehabilitation program is being implemented to address the vulnerability of a large proportion of Italian building stock. A risk management framework, initially only for Italian school buildings, has been developed to assign priorities for the rehabilitation, and to give timescales within which retrofit or demolition must take place. Since it is not practical to carry out detailed assessment for around 60,000 Italian schools, the framework is a multiple-level procedure that aims to identify the highest-risk buildings based on filters of increasing detail, and reduces the size of the building inventory at each step. Finally, priorities and timescales are assigned based on vulnerability, seismic hazard, and building occupancy, within a general framework with parameters that must be assigned by the relevant authorities. The methodology is transparent, technically based, and flexible enough to be adapted for other building types or regions.

    Description: Il bacino di Leonessa è una delle maggiori depressioni tettoniche intermontane dell’Appennino Centrale. A differenza dalle altre depressioni, disposte in direzione appenninica con la faglia bordiera principale sul lato orientale, il bacino è orientato in senso WNW - ESE ed ha la faglia bordiera principale sul suo margine sud-occidentale. Il più antico deposito di origine continentale che riempie la depressione non è affiorante ed è stato rinvenuto solo in alcuni sondaggi. E’ costituito da alternanze di sabbie-argillose e ghiaie (attribuite da GE.MI.NA. ad un generico Pliocene). I sedimenti affioranti sono stati distinti in sintemi. Quello stratigraficamente più basso è il Sintema di Villa Pulcini, costituito da un alternanza di argille, argille torbose, marne e sabbie argillose di ambiente deposizionale da lacustre a piana a canali intrecciati (braided plain), attribuibili alla parte alta del Pleistocene inferiore. Il Sintema di Villa Pulcini è parzialmente coperto dal Sintema di Leonessa, costituito da depositi di conoide alluvionale (conoide della Vallonina) a ovest e da depositi lacustri a est, ambedue contenenti, nella parte alta, intercalazioni di vulcaniti risedimentate. Il ritrovamento di un molare di M. (M.) trogontherii all’interno di depositi alluvionali consente di riferire al Galeriano (U.F. Slivia - ? U.F. Fontana Ranuccio) la porzione basale del sistema. I due sintemi precedenti sono coperti a tratti da sabbie e sabbie argillose rossastre (Sintema di Terzone), con spessore che raramente supera i 5 metri, ricche di elementi vulcanici rimaneggiati. Nella parte più meridionale del bacino, all’interno della profonda incisione del Fosso Tascino, sono localmente presenti due ordini di terrazzi alluvionali. Attualmente il Fosso Tascino mostra un tipico esempio di letto a canali intrecciati (braided), con una piana che supera i 100 m di larghezza. Nella zona di raccordo tra il versante NE del Monte Tilia e i Sintemi di Leonessa e di Terzone, sono stati riconosciuti due ordini di conoidi alluvionali sovrapposti, costituiti in prevalenza da sedimenti ghiaiosi con una minore componente sabbiosa, poggianti in discordanza sui sedimenti più antichi. La definizione degli eventi erosivo-deposizionali che hanno contraddistinto l’evoluzione del paesaggio nel bacino di Leonessa costituisce un passo ulteriore verso un più preciso inquadramento temporale dell’attività tettonica distensiva, del sollevamento regionale e dei cambiamenti climatici che hanno portato all’attuale assetto geomorfologico dell’Appennino Centrale.

    Description: Villarrica volcano (Chile) is one of the most active volcanoes in South America. Its activity is currently characterized by continuous degassing from a summit lava lake/vent punctuated by explosive events. During November 2004 a multidisciplinary experiment was deployed for a 10-d period to define the style of emission and infer shallow conduit dynamics at this basaltic center. This involved collection of thermal, seismic and infrasonic data to describe the background activity confined inside the crater, and use of samples to texturally and chemically characterize the ejecta from more energetic explosions able to attain the crater rim. The background activity was characterized by gas bursting with a frequency of 9 events per minute. This involved emission of gas puffs fed by bubble bursting, with larger bursts emplacing sheets of magma onto the lower crater walls. The ejecta population from the more energetic events was characterized by the coexistence of both scoriae and golden pumice. These two types of clasts have different textures but identical glass compositions, suggesting that they underwent different conduit histories. The golden pumice is interpreted as the expanding inner part of a short-lived jet fed by a rapidly ascending, magma batch. The scoria forms the outer portion of the jet and comprises degassed material entrained during passage of the fresh batch through material residing in the upper-most portion of the conduit. We thus have a largely degassed upper column that feeds persistent bubble bursting, through which fresh batches occasionally rise to feed events of relatively higher energy.

    Description: In this paper we present the results of preliminary geomorphic and trenching investigations along the Kahrizak fault. This fault is located south of the highly populated metropolis of Tehran and represents one of the main structures in the area containing important seismic potential. The Kahrizak fault has a very clear expression at the surface where it forms a prominent 35-km-long, 15-m-high scarp on Holocene alluvial deposits. The fault strikes N70°-80°W and dips to the north. Movement is prevalently right-lateral with the northern side of the fault up. Trench excavations exposed a sequence of weathered, massive, alluvial deposits which are dated, by means of radiometric methods, to the Holocene. In the trenches the sequence is intensely deformed by north-dipping, high- and low-angle faults within a 30-m-wide zone. On the basis of stratigraphic and structural relations, some evidence for individual Holocene earthquakes is found; however, we were not able to reconstruct the seismic history of the fault nor to evaluate the size of deformation produced by each event. Because of the possible ~10 m offset of ancient linear hydraulic artifacts (qanáts), that cross the fault, we hypothesize that the most recent event may have occurred in historical times (more recent than 5000 yr B.P.) and it may be one of those reported in this area by the current catalogues of seismicity. Based on these preliminary investigations we estimate an elapsed time between 5000 and 800 years, a maximum slip per event dmax of ~10 m, a minimum Holocene vertical slip rate of ~1 mm/yr versus a horizontal slip rate of ~3.5 mm/yr, a maximum of ~3000 years for the average recurrence time, and an expected Mw = 7.0 to 7.4. These can be considered as a first-hand reference for the activity on this fault.

    Description: PEGASO (Polar Explorer for Geomagnetic And other Scientific Observation) program has been created to conduct small experiments in as many disciplines on-board of small stratospheric balloons. PEGASO uses the very low expensive pathfinder balloons. Stratospheric pathfinders are small balloons commonly used to explore the atmospheric circumpolar upper winds and to predict the trajectory for big LDBs (Long Duration Balloons). Installing scientific instruments on pathfinder and using solar energy to power supply the system, we have the opportunity to explorer the Polar Regions, during the polar summer, following circular trajectory. These stratospheric small payload have flown for 14 up to 40 days, measuring the magnetic field of polar region, by means of 3-axis-fluxgate magnetometer. PEGASO payload uses IRIDIUM satellite telemetry (TM). A ground station communicates with one or more payloads to download scientific and house-keeping data and to send commands for ballast releasing, for system resetting and for operating on the separator system at the flight end. The PEGASO missions have been performed from the Svalbard islands with the logistic collaboration of the Andoya Rocket Range and from the Antarctic Italian base. Continuous trajectory predictions, elaborated by Institute of Information Science and Technology (ISTI-CNR), were necessary for the flight safety requirements in the north hemisphere. This light payloads (〈10 Kg) are realized by the cooperation between the INGV and the Physics department “La Sapienza” University and it has operated five times in polar areas with the sponsorship of Italian Antarctic Program (PNRA), Italian Space Agency (ASI). This paper summarizes important results about stratospheric missions.

    Description: Stromboli made in July 2002 from fixed positions, using an automated plume scanning technique. Spectral data were collected using a miniature ultraviolet spectrometer, and SO2 column amounts were derived with a differential optical absorption spectroscopy evaluation routine. Scanning through the plume was enabled by a 45 turning mirror affixed to the shaft of a computer controlled stepper motor, so that scattered skylight from incremental angles within the horizon-to-horizon scans was reflected into the field of view of the spectrometer. Each scan lasted _5 min and, by combining these data with wind speeds, average fluxes of 940, 14, and 280 Mg d_1 were obtained for Etna, Vulcano, and Stromboli, respectively. For comparative purposes, conventional road and airborne traverses were also made using this spectrometer, yielding fluxes of 850, 17, and 210 Mg d_1. The automated scanning technique has the advantage of obviating the need for time-consuming traverses underneath the plume and is well suited for longer-term telemetered deployments to provide sustained high time resolution flux data.

    Description: The Calabrian arc represents an accretionary wedge located between the southern Apennines and the Maghrebian chain from which it is separated by two regional shear zones, i.e. the “Pollino Line” and “Taormina Line”, respectively. Since the Pliocene, extension affected the Calabrian chain, determining the formation of normal faults systems. Paleoseismological investigations allowed to associate some of the strongest historical earthquakes occurred in the Calabrian region (Mw up to 7.5) to some of these normal faults. We analyse the north-eastern sector of the arc which is characterised by a complex structural setting, being affected by the Pollino Line. Indeed, an ~E-W trending fault system (Rossano Fault) cut the area. This fault system displays a complex kinematic history, with the superimposition, during the Quaternary, of a normal kinematics over an older strike-slip one. About two km SE of the Mirto village, an excavation exposed marine deposits, attributed by means of paleontological analyses to an age not older than the Lower Pleistocene, overlain by alluvial-colluvial sediments. These deposits have been deformed by a compressive, NW-SE trending fault, verging landwards. The continental sediments affected by the fault have been radiocarbon dated between 10.018±43 BP and 8397±47 BP. This fault may represent the surficial expression of 1) a splay of a back-thrust, related to a main active thrust verging towards NE or 2) an active NW-SE transpressive fault or 3) a local compressive deforma-tion (i.e. a restraining bend) related to an active strike-slip fault. Works are still in progress in order to define the relationship of this compressive fault with the near Rossano fault, to which Galli et al (2006d) attributes a Late Holocene normal activity, considering that this sector has been struck in 1836 by a strong earthquake (Mw=6.2), the causative fault of which has been only tentatively related to the aforementioned Rossano fault.

    Description: We report high-resolution magnetic measurements from two Mediterranean piston cores: LC07 (Sicily Strait) and LC10 (Ionian Sea). Magnetostratigraphic results and δ18O data provide age constraints for core LC07, where we investigate magnetic property variations for two age intervals (0-600 kyr and 660-1020 kyr). For core LC10, rock magnetic parameters appear to be climatically controlled and are used to derive an astronomically tuned age model for the interval between 780 and 1200 kyr. In core LC07, the dominant control on the magnetic properties appears to be glacial-interglacial variations in the concentration of biogenic magnetite. In addition, an increased contribution from high coercivity minerals (e.g. hematite and/or goethite) probably reflects an enhanced eolian input during glacial periods. Climatic control of magnetotactic bacterial populations has been previously suggested in other environments, but this is the first such report from the Mediterranean. In contrast, the rock magnetic response to Quaternary climatic variability in core LC10 seems to be better expressed by variations in the concentration of high coercivity magnetic minerals. The contrast between a dominantly detrital/eolian flux and a dominantly biogenic flux at the same time for the two Mediterranean settings might relate to the presence of an active current regime in the Sicily Strait, which might decrease delivery of an eolian component to the seafloor compared to the deep Ionian Sea.

    Description: This paper briefly describes the preliminary results of an experimentation aimed to test a new non-destructive methodology based on the integrated application of 3-D terrestrial laser scanning and acoustic techniques in the ultrasonic range (54 kHz) in evaluating the quality of carbonatic stone materials. Our target is to evaluate the state of conservation of stone building materials by correlating ultrasonic longitudinal pulse velocity and frequency spectra of the ultrasonic signals with the reflectivity or reflectance of the reflected 3-D laser scanner beam pulse transmitted to the target of an investigated surface.

    Description: Obiettivo principale del monitoraggio dei vulcani attivi è individuare e misurare fenomeni che possono essere indotti dal movimento del magma in profondità. Dal punto di vista sismologico questi fenomeni possono essere sciami sismici, eventi a bassa frequenza, microtremore vulcanico ed eventi very long period (VLP). Attraverso la misura, l'analisi e la corretta interpretazione di questi fenomeni è possibile capire in anticipo se un vulcano sta evolvendo verso una ripresa dell'attività eruttiva. L'Osservatorio Vesuviano - INGV ha tra i suoi compiti istituzionali il monitoraggio del Vesuvio, dei Campi Flegrei e di Ischia che sono, come è noto, vulcani a alto rischio a causa del loro stile eruttivo prevalentemente esplosivo e della presenza nelle loro prossimità di vaste aree urbanizzate. Per effettuare il monitoraggio sismologico di dette aree l'Osservatorio Vesuviano ha sviluppato e mantiene una rete che trasmette i dati in continuo al centro di sorveglianza. La configurazione attuale della rete comprende 28 stazioni analogiche a corto periodo (1Hz) e 4 stazioni digitali a larga banda.

    Description: On February 27, 2007, the Stromboli volcano, which has usually been characterized by moderate explosive activity, started an effusive eruption with a small lava flow down the NW flank. The permanent broadband network installed on the island allowed the revealing of anomalies in the seismicity before the effusive eruption and for the phenomena to be followed over time, thus obtaining meaningful information about the eruption dynamics. During the effusive phase, a major explosion occurred on March 15, 2007. On that occasion, two strainmeters deployed on the volcano in the previous year recorded a strain increment before the blast. After this explosion, which further destabilized the upper part of the edifice, swarms of Long-Period (LP) and hybrid events were recorded. The characteristics and locations of these events suggest that they were associated with the fracturing processes that affected the summit area of the cone. During the effusive phase, changes in the Very Long Period (VLP) event location were recorded. This type of events accompanied the change in the eruptive style, providing information about the magmatic conduit involved in their seismogenetic processes. The effusive phase stopped on April 2, 2007, and the typical Strombolian activity restarted some months later.

    Description: A geochemical survey of thermal waters discharging in the Beas and Parvati valleys (Kulu District, Himachal Pradesh) and in the Sohna town (Gurgaon District, Haryana) was carried out in March 2002. The Beas and Parvati area is characterized by regional seismogenetic fault segments, thrusts and complex folded structures where deep fluid circulation occurs. Thermal springs have temperatures varying between 35 °C and 89 °C. The wide range of surface temperatures and water chemistries suggest the mixing, at various degrees, between a deep saline end-member and a shallow freshwater. Based on the high salinity and the enrichment in halogens (Cl, Br), B and Li, the contribution of the deeper end-member seems to be larger for Kulu and Kalath relative to Manikaran and Kasol. Moreover, a large input of crustal volatiles (He, CO2, H2) is observed for Kulu and Kalath waters. The high dissolved CO2 content and its carbon isotopic composition (13CPDB = -2.87 and -7.49‰ for Kulu and Kalath, respectively) point to a deep, prevalent thermo-metamorphic provenance of the carbon dioxide. A general shallow (i.e. organic) origin of carbon dioxide is suggested for Kasol and Manikaran. The estimated deep temperatures based on the quartz geothermometer provide values ranging between 93-114 °C for all the thermal waters of the Beas and Parvati valleys. The Sohna thermal spring emerges at 42 °C from joints of the seismogenetic Sohna fault. A Na-Cl-HCO3 composition characterizes this water with very low contents of all the selected minor and trace elements. High dissolved helium content points to a prolonged deep circulation, whereas calculated 13C-CO2 (-14.23‰ vs. PDB) is indicative of the general shallow origin of carbon dioxide. The estimated deep temperatures are close to the discharge ones, not providing any valuable information about the temperature of the deeper reservoir.

    Description: Recent seismic swarms and hydrothermal activity suggest that the Quaternary volcanic complex of the Alban Hills may pose a threat to the city of Rome. A 350m scientific borehole was therefore drilled into this volcanic area to elucidate its inner structure for the first time. Wire-line logs were run in the borehole in order to characterize the physical properties of the rocks and their variations with depth. In particular, a detailed sonic log was run to measure the P-wave velocity from the well-head down to 110 m. To further investigate velocity changes, we carried out laboratory measurements of P and S elastic wave velocities and fluid permeability at effective pressures up to 70 MPa during both increasing and decreasing pressure cycles on selected core samples representative of the main volcanic units. Specifically, we studied samples from two pyroclastic units representative of two classes of volcanic deposits that are representative of the whole succession: (i) a coarse-grained, well-lithified facies (Pozzolane Rosse unit), containing abundant mm-to-cm lava clasts and crystals; and (ii) a fine-grained, matrix-supported pyroclastic deposit (Tufo Pisolitico di Trigoria unit), with rare lithic lava clasts and sparse pumice. Elastic wave velocities reveal significant differences between units and indicate how, within the same lithology, the different degree of lithification and presence of clasts can affect significantly physical property values. The mean laboratory value of the Pwave velocity for Pozzolane Rosse and Tufo Pisolitico di Trigoria units is respectively of 3.75 and 3.2 km/s at an effective pressure equivalent to that at the depth at which the sonic velocity was measured. Under increasing effective pressure a profound influence on the transport properties is observed. Permeability ranges from the order of 10−18 m2 for the Pozzolane Rosse unit to the order of 10−15 m2 for the Tufo Pisolitico di Trigoria unit, in good agreement with the shallow aquifer circulating in the shallower units.

    Description: Volcanic edifices, such as Mt. Etna (Italy), are commonly subject to repeated cycles of stress over time due to the combination of magma emplacement from deep reservoirs to shallow depths and superimposed tectonic stresses. Such repeated stress cycles lead to anisotropic deformation and an increase in the level of crack damage within the rocks of the edifice and hence changes to their elastic moduli, which are a key parameter for reliable modelling of deformation sources. We therefore report results of changes in elastic moduli measured during increasing amplitude cyclic stressing experiments on dry and water-saturated samples of Etna basalt. In all experiments, the Young’s modulus decreased by approximately 30% over the total sequence of loading cycles, and the Poisson’s ratio increased by a factor of approximately 3 ± 0.5. Microseismicity, in terms of acoustic emission (AE) output, was also recorded throughout each experiment. Our results demonstrate that AE output only re-commences during any loading cycle when the level of stress where AE ceased during the unloading portion of the previous cycle is exceeded; a manifestation of the Kaiser stress-memory effect. In cycles where no AE output is generated, we also observe no change in elastic moduli. This result is observed for both mechanical and thermal stressing. Our results are interpreted in relation to measurements of volcano-tectonic seismicity and deformation at Mt. Etna volcano.

    Description: We describe the evolution of the volcanic activity and deformation patterns observed at Mount Etna during the July–August 2001 eruption. Seismicity started at 3000 m below sea level on 13 July, accompanied by moderate ground swelling. Ground deformation culminated on 16 July with the development of a NE–SW graben c. 500 m wide and c. 1 m deep in the Cisternazza area at 2600–2500 m above sea level on the southern slope of the volcano. On 17 July, the eruption started at the summit of Mount Etna from the SE Crater (central–lateral eruptive system), from which two radial, c. 30 m wide, c. 3000 m long fracture zones, associated with eruptive fissures, propagated both southward (17 July) and northeastward (20 July). On 18 July, a new vent formed at 2100 m elevation, at the southern base of the Montagnola, followed on the next day by the opening of a vent further upslope, at 2550 m (eccentric eruptive system). The eruption lasted for 3 weeks. Approximately 80% of the total lava volume was erupted from the 2100 m and the 2550 m vents. The collected structural data suggest that the Cisternazza graben developed as a passive local response of the volcanic edifice to the ascent of a north–south eccentric dyke, which eventually reached the ground surface in the Montagnola area (18–19 July). In contrast, the two narrow fracture zones radiating from the summit are interpreted as the lateral propagation, from the conduit of the SE Crater, of north–south- and NE–SW-oriented shallow dykes, 2–3 m wide. The evolution of the fracture pattern together with other volcanological data (magma ascent and effusion rate, eruptive style, petrochemical characteristics of the erupted products, and petrology of xenoliths within magma) suggest that the eccentric and central–lateral eruptions were fed by two distinct magmatic systems. Examples of eccentric activity accompanied by central–lateral events have never been described before at Etna.

    Description: TWODEE-2 is a FORTRAN 90 code based on previous code (TWODEE). It is designed to solve the shallow water equations for fluid depth, depth-averaged horizontal velocities and depth-averaged fluid density. The shallow layer approach used by TWODEE-2 is a compromise between the complexity of CFD models and the simpler integral models. It can be used for forecasting gas dispersion near the ground and/or for hazard assessment over complex terrains. The inputs to the model are topography, terrain roughness, wind measurements from meteorological stations and gas flow rate from the ground sources. Optionally the model can be coupled with the output of a meteorological processor which generates a zero-divergence wind field incorporating terrain effects. Model outputs are gas concentration, depth-averaged velocity, averaged cloud thickness and dose. The model can be a useful tool for gas hazard assessment by evaluating where and when lethal concentrations for humans and animals can be reached.

    Description: Obiettivo del presente lavoro è lo sviluppo di un metodo di analisi in grado di stimare i parametri fondamentali del moto ondoso, a partire dai dati acquisiti da tre altimetri acustici installati a bordo di una boa meteo-oceanografica operante in mare aperto. Il metodo di analisi sviluppato compie opportune operazioni di filtraggio sulle sequenze temporali delle misure effettuate dai tre altimetri, quindi, elaborando tali sequenze, fornisce le stime di alcuni parametri caratteristici del moto ondoso (tra cui l’altezza e la direzione di propagazione). I diversi tipi di filtraggio ed il metodo di stima sviluppati si basano sul calcolo di alcuni parametri statistici (tra cui media, mediana e deviazione standard) delle serie temporali di dati acquisiti, sulla conoscenza delle loro densità spettrali di potenza (calcolate mediante FFT), e sul calcolo delle funzioni di crosscorrelazione delle sequenze di dati prese a due a due. Il procedimento di stima realizzato è stato sperimentato su una notevole quantità di dati reali acquisiti in Mar Ligure tramite l’utilizzo della stazione di misura fissa su cui sono montati gli altimetri acustici, ed ha fornito risultati soddisfacenti per quanto riguarda affidabilità e precisione. Nell’ambito della valutazione delle prestazioni del sistema di acquisizione dati e del metodo di stima, i risultati ottenuti sono stati confrontati con misure provenienti da altri sensori a bordo della stazione e con stime analoghe effettuate a partire dai dati acquisiti da un’altra stazione di misura, operante anch’essa in Mar Ligure, ma dotata di strumentazione di altro tipo.

    Description: During the International Polar Year (IPY), one area of great interest is co-coordinated, multi-instrument probing of the ionosphere at high latitudes. This region is important not only for the applications that rely upon our understanding of it, but also because it contains the footprints of processes that have their origin in the interplanetary space. Many different techniques are now available for probing the ionosphere, from radar measurements to the analysis of very low frequency (VLF) wavepaths. Combining these methods provides the ability to study the ionosphere from high in the F-region to the bottom of the D-layer. Thus, coupling processes from the magnetosphere and to the neutral atmosphere can be considered. An additional dimension is through comparisons of the response of the two polar ionospheres to similar (or the same) geomagnetic activity. With more instruments available at the South Pole inter-hemispheric, studies have become easier to accomplish such that a fuller picture of the global response to Sun–Earth coupling can be painted. This paper presents a review of the current state of knowledge in ionospheric probing. It cannot provide a comprehensive guide of the work to date due to the scale of the topic.Rather it is intended to give an overview of the techniques and recent results from some of the instruments and facilities that are a part of the IPY cluster 63—Heliosphere Impact on Geospace. In this way it is hoped that the reader will gain a flavor of the recent research performed in this area and the potential for continuing collaboration and capabilities during the IPY (2007–2009).

    Description: Widespread Cretaceous remagnetization is documented in several Mesozoic basins in North Central Spain. Organyà Basin (South Central Pyrenean foreland) is atypical in the sense that the lower part of the rock sequence (Berriasian-Barremian limestones) is remagnetized while the upper portion (Aptian-Albian marls) is not (Dinarès-Turell and García-Senz, 2000). Here, this view is confirmed by the analysis of 41 new paleomagnetic sites over the entire basin, so that a 3D view is obtained. Thermoviscous resetting of the natural remanent magnetization can be ruled out, hence the remagnetization is chemical in origin. A positive breccia-test on remagnetized strata constrains the remagnetization age to older than the Paleocene-Eocene, when the backthrust system was active. The remagnetization is argued to have occurred early in the geological history of the Organyà Basin either in the elevated geothermal gradient regime during the syn-rift extension or at the earliest phase of the later compression. Burial is considered the most important cause combined with the lithological effect that limestones are more prone to express remagnetization than marls. The observed pressure solution in the remagnetized limestone is likely associated with the remagnetization, whereas it is unlikely that externally derived fluids have played an important role.

    Description: Assessing the residence times of phonolite magmas in the shallow crust contributes to the understanding of explosive volcanic systems. Estimations of that by dating the residence time of a mineral in a melt was difficult in the past, because e.g. of the lack of evidence for the co-genetic character of the crystals dated. Here we present an estimate for the residence time of a phonolite magma feeding the Pomici di Mercato Plinian eruption (8890±90 cal years BP) of Mt. Somma-Vesuvius (Southern Italy), employing U–Th disequilibrium dating of unzoned Ca-rich phenocrystic magmatic garnets. Based on combined textural, geochemical, and Sr- O isotope evidence, these garnets can be identified as co-genetic with their host phonolites. Furthermore, experimental and petrological data suggest that Ca-garnets can be a liquidus phase in highly differentiated phonolite magmas of Mercato. A whole-rock–glass–garnet U–Th isochron gives a crystallisation age for the Ca-rich garnets of 14,400±1100 a (2σ). This implies a Ca-garnet residence time of 5510±1100 years (2σ) in the Mercato phonolite melt prior to eruption and provides one of the first robust estimates of how long explosive phonolite magma has resided in the shallow crust before eruption. Calculations of magma cooling rates and settling velocities of the Ca-garnets confirm that garnet-bearing phonolite can remain liquid and the garnets remain suspended in a magma chamber for as long as 5510 years before the time of eruption. Processes which may have disturbed the U–Th isotope systematic of the samples, such as assimilation, recharge or surface alteration can be ruled out.

    Description: On 8 June 2008 an Mw(NOA)=6.4 earthquake occurred in NW Peloponnesus, western Greece. This event is the largest strike-slip earthquake to occur in western Greece during the past 25 years. The hypocentre was determined at 18 km depth beneath village Mihoi in SW Achaia. No surface rupture was observed. Many rock falls, slides and liquefaction features have been found as is typical for an earthquake of this size. Double-difference relocations of 370 aftershocks show a linear pattern of events and define a clear NE-SW striking mainshock fault plane. The aftershock region extends approximately 30 km in length, and the width of the surface projection of the aftershocks is as large as 10 km. The depth of the aftershocks rarely exceeds 22 km. Analysis of high-rate GPS data showed that station RLS (Riolos) which is located 12.8 km N5°W of the epicentre was displaced co-seismically 7 mm to the North in agreement with right-lateral kinematics of the rupture. Static (Coulomb) stress transfer analysis indicates loading of faults near the towns of Patras (north) and Amaliada (south), respectively. The earthquake put more emphasis on the role of strike-slip fault in the deformation of western Greece also indicating that seismic strain is partitioned between strike-slip and normal-slip events due to obliquity of the Nubia (Africa) subduction and the N-S extension of the overriding Aegean upper plate

    Description: Il settore dell’arco Calabro è interessato da sistemi di faglie normali attive, responsabili di forti terremoti storici di Magnitudo superiore a 6. Gli eventi sismici maggiori sono avvenuti principalmente tra lo stretto di Messina e la valle del Crati. Tra questi il terremoto del 1783 (M=6.9), del 1905 (M=7.3), del 1638 (M=6.7), del 1832 (M=6.5) e del 1836 (M=6.2) (Working Group CPTI 04). Alcuni di questi eventi sono stati associati all’attivazione di alcune strutture tettoniche (Galli & Scionti 2006; Galli & Bosi 2002; Valensise & Pantosti 2001). L’evento del 1836, che ha colpito il settore nord-orientale della Calabria, poco a sud della piana di Sibari, è stato associate tentativamente da Moretti (2000) all’attivazione di una serie di segmenti di faglia orientati E-W e NW-SE individuati tra Corigliano e Rossano. Questo lavoro ha come scopo quello di individuare strutture sismogenetiche attive nell’area colpita dall’evento sismico del 1836 ed, in particolare, quelle causative dell’evento sismico del 1836. A tal fine sono stati effettuati rilevamenti geologici e geomorfologici, con particolare riguardo alla zona dell’abitato di Mirto, poco a sud della città di Rossano Calabro, dove uno scavo ha messo in evidenza depositi di origine marina in facies deltizia, datati per via paleontologica ad un’età non più antica dell’Emiliano (Pleistocene inferiore), dislocati da una struttura tettonica ad orientazione circa NNW-SSE, a cinematica prevalentemente inverse, con senso di trasporto verso SSW. La dislocazione sembra interessare anche depositi continentali fluvio-colluviali incassati all’interno dei depositi deltizi e separati da questi da una superficie di erosione. Da questi sedimenti continentali è stato prelevato un campione per effettuare una datazione radiometrica, ancora in corso. La localizzazione di questa struttura tettonica è compatibile con l’ubicazione della zona epicentrale del terremoto del 1836, derivata dai dati macrosismici (CPTI 04). Inoltre, lungo il lineamento, pochi km a nord dello scavo studiato, in località Cento Fontane, viene segnalata risorgenza di acque calde in occasione dell’evento sismico menzionato.

    Description: Die Oberflächentopographie der Eisschilde ist von großer Bedeutung für exakte Berechnungen von Massenbilanzen und Modellierungen der Eisdynamik. Aus diesen Studien kann der Beitrag der Eisschilde im Hinblick auf die globalen Veränderungen des Meeresspiegels ermittelt werden. Es ist jedoch notwendig, hierfür ein möglichst genaues Höhenmodell einzusetzen. Die Küstenregionen des antarktischen Eisschildes spielen dabei eine wichtige Rolle, da sie die Übergangszone zwischen gegründetem und schwimmendem Eis bilden. Bereits vorhandene Höhenmodelle zeigen in diesen Regionen abweichende Höhen und besitzen oft nicht die nötige Genauigkeit um genaue Berechnungen zu ermöglichen.Im Rahmen der CryoSat Cal/Val-Aktivitäten (CryoVEx) und der International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Vorerkundung, wurden Anfang 2007 im Umkreis der deutschen Neumayer-Station bodengebundene kinematische GPS Messungen vorgenommen. Das Untersuchungsgebiet erstreckt sich von 5° bis 11° W und 70° bis 72° S. Im Fokus stehen die beiden das Ekstrømisen umgebenden gegründeten Eiszungen Halvfarryggen und Søråsen. Die kinematischen GPS Messungen sind um lokale GPS Referenzstationen zentriert, was zu einer Minimierung der systematischen Fehler bei der Post-Prozessierung führt. Jedoch sind diese GPS Messungen nur sehr kleinräumig, weshalb sie mit weiteren Datensätzen ergänzt werden. Hierfür wurden Laseraltimeterdaten über den Eisschilden des ICESat, GLAS12 Release 28, verwendet. Um eine noch höhere Datendichte zu erreichen, wurden flugzeuggestützte Radaraltimeterdaten (RA) bzw. Eisradardaten genutzt. Der neue Topographiedatensatz beruht auf der Kombination dieser Daten. Da das kinematische GPS weder von Wolken, noch durch die Hangneigung beeinflußt wird, wurden diese Daten als Referenz genommen. Alle weiteren Datensätze wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Höhenunterschiede zum GPS untersucht und ggf. korrigiert. Der neue Datensatz basiert auf korrigierten Datensätzen, die mittels dem Ordinary Kriging Algorithmus auf ein 1 km x 1 km Raster interpoliert wurde. Durch die Kombination der bodengebundenen GPS Messungen mit Flugzeug- und Satellitenaltimetrie wurde ein sehr genaues Höhenmodell der Region um das Ekstrømisen erstellt. Ältere Topographiedatensätze, welche ohne Bodenreferenzmessungen erstellt wurden, weisen deutliche Höhendifferenzen von bis zu 400 m gegenüber dem hier vorgestellten neuen Modell auf.

    Description: A simple Lagrangian water quality model was designed to investigate the hypothesis of sporadic silica limitations of diatom growth in the lower Elbe River in Germany. For each fluid parcel a limited reservoir of silica was specified to be consumed by diatoms. The model's simplicity notwithstanding, a set of six selected model parameters could not be fully identified from existing observations at one station. After the introduction of prior knowledge of the ranges of meaningful parameter values, calibration of the over-parameterised model manifested itself primarily in the generation of posterior parameter covariances. Estimations of the covariance matrix based on (a) second order partial derivatives of a quadratic cost function at its optimum and (b) Monte Carlo simulations exploring the whole space of parameter values gave consistent results. Diagonalisation of the covariance matrix yielded two linear parameter combinations that were most effectively controlled by data from periods with and without lack of silica, respectively. The two parameter combinations were identified as the essential inputs that govern the successful simulation of intermittently decreasing chlorophyll a concentrations in summer. A satisfactory simulation of the pronounced chlorophyll a minimum in spring, by contrast, was found to be beyond the means of the simple model.

    Description: Physical and chemical properties of surface sediments and waters of 65 lakes in Northern and Central Yakutia were analysed. The studies included hydrochemical analyses as well as sedimentological, organic and inorganic geochemical analyses, the analysis of stable carbon isotope ratios and the analysis of magnetic susceptibilities. The objectives of this work were a) to characterise Yakutian lakes by their waters and surface sediments. Additionally, the geographical setting, i.e. the climate, vegetation and the morphology were taken into account. b) To explore parameters attributing for the variation in the measured variables using multivariate statistical methods. c) To characterise the relationships between sediments and waters. Most of the sampled lakes originated by thermokarst processes and lack in- and outflows. The ionic composition of the waters is strongly influenced by the continentality of the Lakes. Central Yakutian lake waters have considerably higher ion concentrations and electric conductivities than waters sampled in Northern Yakutia. This reflects the negative water balance (evaporation exceeding precipitation) in that region, which results in evaporation of lake waters. C/N ratios of surface sediments sampled in that regions are higher than those in Northern Yakutia as the bioproductivity is generally higher in Central Yakutia. The influence of the vegetation on the watershed is reflected in elevated Na/K ratios of waters sampled in lakes surrounded by taiga forest or pastures. Statistical analyses identified the elec- VII tric conductivity, ion concentrations and alkalinity of waters as variables controlling the composition of surface sediments. Sediments rich in nutrients, with high concentrations of elements related to lush vegetation on the watershed and high magnetic susceptibilities were encountered in lakes characterised by a) waters with high ionic concentrations and high electric conductivities and b) their geographical setting, i.e. the vegetation on the watershed and the negative water balance in these regions. These results can be of great value to paleolimnological and paleoenvironmental studies, as analysed sediments are being correlated to recent environments.

    Description: Die Siliziumschalen von Diatomeen (Frusteln) weisen eine unglaubliche Vielzahl an Formen und Strukturierungen auf. Bis heute konnte nicht abschließend geklärt werden, unter welchen Aspekten sich die verschiedenen Frusteln evolutiv entwickelt haben. Eine durch Belastungstests an realen Diatomeen gestützte Theorie geht davon aus, dass die Schalen evolutiv optimierte Leichtbaukonstruktionen darstellen. In dieser Arbeit wird mittels eines Programms zur Topologieoptimierung durch Sickenbildung exemplarisch untersucht, inwieweit sich bei der Optimierung einer Platte bezüglich verschiedener Belastungen eine der Diatomeenschale gleichende Bauteilstruktur ausbilden würde beziehungsweise könnte. Die optimierten Modelle unterscheiden sich in Material, Belastungsart, Belastungsdichte, Belastungs-verteilung, Lagerung und Geometrie. Es zeigt sich, dass die Lagerung und dementsprechend die Geometriekonturen den größten Einfluss auf die entstehende Topologie besitzen. Bei verschiebungs- und rotationsfreier Lagerung aller Seiten formen sich Streben zwischen gegenüberliegenden Plattenecken aus. Teilweise kommt es zur Bildung einer selbstähnlichen Struktur in der Plattenmitte. Insofern wissen die optimierten Platten Analogien zu abstrahierten Frustulstrukuren auf. Sie deuten aber auch auf die Grenzen der Sickenoptimierung hin. Unterstützt werden die Ergebnisse durch erste Berechnungen zur Plattenoptimierung nach der Soft Kill Optimization (SKO) – Methode. Obwohl nicht eindeutig geklärt werden kann, ob und für welche Belastungsfälle Diatomeenschalen optimiert sind, scheint es in jedem Fall lohnenswert, Diatomeen zukünftig als voroptimierte Grundlage für Leichtbaukonstruktionen einzusetzen. Dazu ist weitere Forschungsarbeit notwendig, um den Zusammenhang zwischen den Strukturunterschieden von Diatomeenfrusteln und ihrer Festigkeit zu untersuchen.

Roma, 2 - 95125, Catania Italy (mangiagli@ct.ingv.it, reitano@ct.ingv.it) During the latest (2006) eruptive activity of Mount Etna (Sicily - Italy) multidisciplinary instrumental networks and observations produced useful and significant data in order to understand the eruptive dynamics of this volcano. In this context, the staff of the INGV Catania Section Department called Unità Funzionale Sala Operativa (UFSO) actively participates in national and European research projects dealing with the development and use of new systems with high technological content useful, in particular, during eruptions or seismic crises. Another aspect of this work is represented by the development of software for the supervisory and automatic control of the working systems. For example during the last few weeks of 2006, ash-rich columns several km in height, and consequent fallout characterized the eruption of Mt Etna and severely hampered the functioning of the nearby International Airport of Catania. Therefore, for a better evaluation of real time systems a new dedicated web site has been realized, improving the availability of fundamental data for the Italian Department of Civil Defence (DPC). The DPC staff, using also INGV scientific data, releases daily bulletins to Italian government authorities. Multidisciplinary data are collected and well represented in risk maps. Moreover, various algorithms have been implemented and used to make simulations of eruptive clouds from Mt. Etna. All realized maps also use wind forecasts at different altitude and different scenarios are available in a new software able to plot different parameters like, for example, temperature and wind speed/direction in different isobaric levels, precipitation rate and total cloud cover.

Roma, 2 - 95125, Catania Italy (pecora@ct.ingv.it, neri@ct.ingv.it) The recent eruptive activity of Mount Etna in Sicily (Italy) has been well documented by multidisciplinary instrumental observations, and significantly improved the understanding of the eruptive dynamics of this volcano. The monitoring networks are currently developed and managed by the Catania Section of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). Video footage from the network of the monitoring video cameras is analyzed to discriminate between different eruptive typologies and to derive physical and dynamic properties of the eruptions. The cameras are located in four different places around the volcano (Schiena dell’Asino, Milo, Nicolosi and Catania), at respective distances of 5, 11, 15 and 27 km from the summit craters. Four video cameras record in the visible band and one in the Long-wave infrared (LWIR) over 24 hours/day. The images acquired by the Schiena dell’Asino camera are sent to a receiver in Catania, through a 10 GHz microwawe transmitter, whereas the signals from the other cameras are sent to Catania via 2 GHz video transmitters and/or cable. All images are digitized on computer, and archived on video tape and in AVI format with each clip representing 15 minutes compressed using 1 frame per two seconds, which are posted on the intranet server of the institute. A GPS Time-Code ads date and time to each frame before being digitized to 640 x 480 pixels. Meaningful frames are selected for analysis from footage of significant eruptive events, through dedicated software. The cumulative error regarding the measured parameters is estimated at up to 20%. In 2006, a new FLIR Thermavision A40M infrared camera was installed at Nicolosi. The camera detector is a 320 by 240 pixel uncooled microbolometer with a spectral range from 7.5 to 13 micrometer. Vertical and horizontal viewing is 18° and 24 , respectively, with a spatial resolution of 1.3 mrad. Thermal sensitivity is 0.08°C at 30°C. Thermal images are converted on board the camera into a single value for the peak temperature found in a region of interest centred on the active craters. This value is transmitted with a frequency of 1 Hz to the acquisition centre in Nicolosi. If a peak temperature value is less than 2°C than the preceding value then the relative change is added to the cumulative temperature value. Consequently, when the curve is near vertical the images registered by the thermal camera suggest increases in explosive/ effusive activity. On the contrary, if the curve is near horizontal the radiance of the eruptive theatre is constant or in diminution. Thermal images and thermal data are processed by dedicated software developed by LabVIEW 8.0 in detecting ash-rich eruptive columns, explosive and effusive activity. All these data are available at the INGV Control Centre and are used to alert on-duty staff in the early-warning procedures. This network of cameras furnished fundamental data to the Italian Civil Defence during the 2006 eruption, when ash-rich columns several km in height severely threatened the functioning of the nearby International Airport of Catania.

    Description: A new approach has been developed aiming at the probabilistic estimate of seismic hazard from the local seismic history. This is expressed in terms of seismic effects documented at the site during past earthquakes (macroseismic intensity) and thus a specific statistical treatment is required to take into account the peculiar character of macroseismic data that are discrete, ordinal and range-limited. The proposed procedure also allows the correct treatment of relevant uncertainty (ill-defined intensity values, local catalogue completeness, etc.) in the frame of a coherent distribution-free statistical approach. This methodology has been implemented in a free computer program (SASHA: Site Approach to Seismic Hazard Assessment) and applied to the seismic hazard estimation at the 8100 municipalities in Italy. The program also implements a probabilistic procedure to “translate” hazard estimates provided in terms of Intensity to other ground-shaking parameters (e.g. PGA): this “rescaling” procedure allows to com-pare the results coming from this approach with those provided by standard PSHA procedures. This comparison results of great importance at the sites where a relatively rich seismic history is available and it could provide a benchmark for different approaches to PSHA.

    Description: The outermost, NE-verging fronts of the Northern Apennines (Italy) are overlain by a thick syntectonic sedimentary wedge filling up the basin beneath the Po Plain. Due to fast sedimentation rates and comparatively low tectonic rates, the fronts are generally buried. Evidence for their activity includes scattered historical and instrumental earthquakes and drainage anomalies controlled by growing buried anticlines. The largest earthquakes, up to Mw 5.8, are associated with active compression with a GPS-documented shortening rate 〈1 mm/a. We used geological, structural and morphotectonic data to draw a N-S–striking section between Bologna and Ferrara, aimed at analyzing whether and how the deformation is partitioned among the frontal thrusts of the Northern Apennines and identifying the potential sources of damaging earthquakes. We pointed out active anticlines based on the correspondence among drainage anomalies, historical seismicity and buried ramps. We also analyzed the evolution of the Plio-Quaternary deformation by modeling in a sandbox the geometry, kinematics and growth patterns of the thrust fronts. Our results (i) confirm that some of the main Quaternary thrusts are still active and (ii) highlight the partitioning of deformation in the overlap zones. We remark that the extent and location of some of the active thrusts are compatible with the location and size of the main historical earthquakes and discuss the hypothesis that they may correspond to their causative seismogenic faults.

    Description: The identification of the seismogenetic source of the Mw = 6.7, 1688 Sannio normal faulting earthquake is still a subject of scientific debate. This is due to several reasons comprising a) the possible incompleteness of the damage pattern, b) the difficult or not straightforward recognition of the induced surface deformation, c) the probable occurrence of blind or hidden faulting, and d) the low tectonic deformation rates and youthfulness of the source. According to the magnitude scaled with Wells and Coppersmith’s relationships the earthquake ruptured a 30 km-long, 16 km-wide normal fault. However, published works propose seismogenic sources for this earthquake slightly smaller than the expected from the empirical relationships alone. Similar results were obtained for other large historical events in central-southern Apennines. This may reflect either a routinely overestimation of the magnitude of earthquakes listed in the historical catalogue, or an underestimation of the geologically determined seismogenic sources. The goal of this paper is to collect original information for identifying the sismogenetic source of the 1688 earthquake, making use of seismological, geological and morphometrical data. In particular, the seismological data used in this study are relative both to the historical and recent seismic activity in the Sannio area, which in instrumental times was characterized by low energy seismic sequences (1990-92 and 1997, Md = 4.1). As regards the morphometrical analysis, we studied the Tammaro basin area (Sannio, Southern Apennines) for identifying the long term surface deformation induced by the seismogenetic fault of the 1688 earthquake. The reason of our choice is due to a) the hypothesis of the 1688 source location inside this basin, suggested by the seismogenetic source database DISS v. 3.1, b) the presence along the Tammaro river of young geomorphological features useful for revealing tectonic surface deformation, and c) clustering of recent seismic events inside this area along hypothetical boundaries of the master fault. Our analysis has been carried out by integrating the morphometrical data derived by processing of a very high resolution DTM (5x5 m pixel), with the geological and geomorphological data derived from photo-interpretation and field surveys in a GIS environment. The preliminary results have provided the following conclusions: a) the topographical parameters extracted from DTM show significant NW-SE lineaments on the right hand side of the valley of the Tammaro river; this evidence is further constrained by morphological analyses carried out both from orthophoto and from field surveys, that confirm the presence of a structural mountainside corresponding to the above lineaments; b) the low energy sequences, which were progressively activated, do not coincide with the main structural lineaments exposed at surface, but highlight the activity of buried structures likely acting as segment-boundaries and constraining the dimension of the 1688 seismogenetic source.

    Description: Il Pleistocene è un intervallo di tempo caratterizzato da un’elevata risoluzione stratigrafica, che potrebbe permettere studi scientifici di grande dettaglio nel territorio lombardo. Sfortunatamente, tale risoluzione è penalizzata dalla natura stessa del record sedimentario pleistocenico, che, in ambito continentale, è generalmente frammentario e discontinuo, soprattutto in quelle regioni, come la Lombardia, che hanno subìto in passato l’azione di ripetute glaciazioni. L’assenza in affioramento di successioni stratigrafiche continue costituisce obiettivamente un ostacolo al riconoscimento ed alla correlazione fisica degli eventi stratigrafici riconosciuti. Tale limite è tuttora riscontrabile nel tradizionale rilevamento geologico che se da un lato ha avuto il merito di arrivare a descrivere il territorio con un dettaglio ragguardevole, non è stato tuttavia in grado di inquadrare efficacemente i dati raccolti nell’ambito dell’evoluzione del territorio durante il Pleistocene. Ciononostante, a supporto e completamento dell’attività scientifica svolta in passato, si è aggiunto il contributo della Regione Lombardia ed ENI, che verso la fine degli anni ’90 hanno dato inizio ad un importante programma di ricerche sul sottosuolo, portato poi avanti dalla Regione Lombardia fino al 2006. Nell’ambito di questo programma sono stati perforati 12 sondaggi a carotaggio continuo, con il recupero di circa 1800 m di sedimenti. Tali carote sono state quindi oggetto di uno studio interdisciplinare con analisi palinologiche, micropaleontologiche, petrografiche e paleomagnetiche. Il supporto cronostratigrafico fornito dalla magnetostratigrafia e l’osservazione di importanti variazioni di facies, di petrografia e contenuto pollinico nelle carote hanno permesso di riconoscere nel sottosuolo lombardo eventi globali e regionali avvenuti durante il Pleistocene. Il più importante di questi eventi stratigrafici è indubbiamente l’inizio delle grandi glaciazioni pleistoceniche che produce un drammatico cambio nell’architettura deposizionale della Pianura Padana ed un’importante evoluzione nell’ecologia dell’epoca. Questo evento, datato con la magnetostratigrafia a circa 870.000 anni dal presente, è correlabile a scala globale con la Transizione del Pleistocene medio, che segna il passaggio tra il Pleistocene inferiore, più caldo dell’attuale e con ridotte oscillazioni climatiche con frequenza di circa 40.000 anni, ed il Pleistocene medio, caratterizzato dall’alternanza di glaciazioni e periodi caldi interglaciali con frequenza di circa 100.000 anni. Un secondo evento stratigrafico, riconosciuto nel sottosuolo grazie allo studio dei sondaggi, riguarda il sollevamento della media e alta pianura lombarda. Sono stati infatti osservati in alcune carote depositi marini posti ad una quota superiore a quella del livello del mare. Questo fatto, riscontrato a scala regionale, ha suggerito l’esistenza di una fase di sollevamento dell’edificio alpino durante il Pleistocene medio con tassi minimi valutati nell’ordine di 0,1 mm all’anno. La natura di questo sollevamento non è univocamente interpretabile. Tuttavia, la scarsa sismicità del territorio lombardo, con l’eccezione dell’area gardesana, e l’attuale assetto strutturale alpino portano a ritenere il sollevamento del Pleistocene medio come un prodotto dell’interazione tra clima e tettonica. Constatando infatti che l’evento di sollevamento è di poco successivo all’inizio delle glaciazioni e considerando l’erosione che ogni glaciazione esercita sul territorio interessato, l’ipotesi formulata è quindi che la costante rimozione di massa dalla catena alpina verso i bacini sedimentari periferici all’orogene abbia innescato a lungo termine un bilanciamento isostatico delle Alpi con conseguente movimento verso l’alto dei volumi di roccia e sedimento che costituiscono il sistema Alpi e alta-media pianura lombarda.

    Description: We examine different geomorphologic evidences observed in the Lombardian Southern Alps (northern Italy) and their foothills during the middle Pleistocene, in order to estimate long-term exhumation rates for early Pleistocene deposits and highlight a common underlying process. Between the Gelasian and the early–middle Pleistocene transition, tectonic and climatic changes led to the formation of several intermountain basins in the Lombardian Southern Alps. Lacustrine environments mainly developed within these basins under various climatic regimes, bequeathing extraordinary series of traces about the climatic history of the Alps. These basins developed in concomitance of a long-term intravalley aggradation phase that reached its maximum within the Southern Alps valleys around the early–middle Pleistocene transition. In the characteristic stratigraphy of an intermountain basin (e.g. Bagaggera, Leffe, Val Sabbia basins) a regressive sequence, followed by eolian deposition and strong weathering, can be observed. At the present state of knowledge, if we depict the time span of these lacustrine sequences, we observe an overall extinction of the intermountain basins at the beginnings of the middle Pleistocene, apart from those sites which experienced subsidence by local active tectonics. At the foothills of the Southern Alps, roughly starting at the same time, the oldest fluvioglacial deposits experienced a long term incision phase, which isolated broad areas of the piedmont Po Plain. On these terraces only eolian sedimentation occurred and vetusols (“ferretto” Auct.) started developing. At the whole, during the Pleistocene the examined area experience an early Pleistocene aggradation phase, followed by a middle Pleistocene incision phase, that exhumed by erosion the early Pleistocene deposits. As the major Pleistocene glaciations occurred only in few of the considered basins, the observed long-term change cannot be interpreted as a direct response of river drainages to glaciation. We suggest instead that all these geologic features can be ascribed to an unique process, i.e. the middle Pleistocene long-term uplift identified by means of subsurface geology studies in the Po Plain. This regional uplift is an isostatic rebalance produced by the long-term sum of the erosional effects of repeated glacial-interglacial cycles in the Alps. As response to this isostatic uplift a landscape dissection occurred during middle Pleistocene both in the Alpine chain as well as at its foothills, hampering the formation of new intermountain basins (lowering of the morphologic thresholds) also in not-formerly glaciated areas (Leffe, Ranica, Val Sabbia basins; Orobic and Brescian Prealps), and triggering vetusols development in broad areas of the piedmont Po Plain (long-term geostasy conditions). Absolute estimates of the observed uplift are not feasible in the examined area (mountain belt) as altimetric constraints were not recognised. Anyway is possible to produce a tentative estimate of the exhumation rates (i.e. the displacement of a point toward to the surface), by taking into account the age and present elevation of the paleosurfaces with the observed vetusols and the present elevation of the cutting river bed.

    Description: Elastic finite element models are applied to investigate the effects of topography and medium heterogeneities on the surface deformation and the gravity field produced by volcanic pressure sources. Changes in the gravity field cannot be interpreted only in terms of gain of mass disregarding the ground deformation of the rocks surrounding the source. Contributions to gravity changes depend also on surface and subsurface mass redistribution driven by dilation of the volcanic source. Both ground deformation and gravity changes were firstly evaluated by solving a coupled axi-symmetric problem to estimate the effects of topography and medium heterogeneities. Numerical results show significant discrepancies in the ground deformation and gravity field compared to those predicted by analytical solutions, which disregard topography, elastic heterogeneities and density subsurface structures. With this in mind, we reviewed the expected gravity changes accompanying the 1993-1997 inflation phase on Mt Etna by setting up a fully 3D finite element model in which we used the real topography, to include the geometry, and seismic tomography, to infer the crustal heterogeneities. The inflation phase was clearly detected by different geodetic techniques (EDM, GPS, SAR and leveling data) that showed a uniform expansion of the overall volcano edifice. When the gravity data are integrated with ground deformation data and a coupled FEM modeling was solved, a mass intrusion could have occurred at depth to justify both ground deformation and gravity observations.

    Description: Fluids circulating inside hydrothermal systems drive thermal and kinetic energy to balance the acting forces. Convective heat flux variations can be affected either by change in regional tectonic factor and by magma migration, both processes accountable for volcanic risk. The thermal release on quiescent volcano is not negligible if compared to that associated to eruptions, according to balances on hydrothermal activity and eruptive activity (Nuccio & Valenza, 1986, Chiodini et al., 2001). Moreover outlet temperature of La Fossa fumaroles (Vulcano, Aeolian Islands), indicates that thermal energy release is not stationary (Chiodini et al., 1992), showing relationships either with changes in the magmatic components of fluids and with seismic energy release (Badalamenti et al 1987, Nuccio et al 2000, Diliberto et al 2002). However at Vulcano, to estimate the time variation of convective heat flux, mainly steam output has been measured so far (Italiano & Nuccio ,1992; Italiano et al., 1998)…(b).. Indeed some interesting changes of heat flux from soil have been recorded, in 1998 and in 2004-2005, with anew method tested out of fumarole area. The first variation was related to the seismic crisis of November 1998 (Aubert & Alparone, 2000, Diliberto & Alparone, 2004); the second one (November 2004) was probably due to both magmatic fluids migration and little seismic activity. These results indicate that with this method future changes in the heat power (range or distribution) could be monitored to obtain new clues on the evolution of the activity.

The last episodes of activity in the majority of their eruptive centers date back to the Late Holocene or even first centuries of the recent era (El’brus Volcano) [2]. This implies potential volcanic hazards in the Greater Caucasus. Therefore, it is important to outline contours of this potentially hazardous region with the maximal possible accuracy. The region is characterized by indications of geodynamic stress, such as recent eruptions, crustal deformations, seismic activity, geothermal anomalies, and others. The 3He/4He value in natural gases can serve as one of such indications.

    Description: We calculated the impact on Southern Italy of a large set of tsunamis resulting from earthquakes generated by major fault zones of the Mediterranean Sea. Our approach merges updated knowledge on the regional tectonic setting and scenario-like calculations of expected tsunami impact. We selected three potential source zones located at short, intermediate and large distance from our target coastlines: the Southern Tyrrhenian thrust belt; the Tell-Atlas thrust belt; and the western Hellenic Arc. For each zone we determined a Maximum Credible Earthquake and described the geometry, kinematics and size of its associated Typical Fault. We then let the Typical Fault float along strike of its parent source zone and simulated all tsunamis it could trigger. Simulations are based on the solution of the nonlinear shallow water equations through a finite-difference technique. For each run we calculated the wave fields at desired simulation times and the maximum water elevation field, then produced travel-time maps and maximum wave-height profiles along the target coastlines. The results show a highly variable impact for tsunamis generated by the different source zones. For example, a large Hellenic Arc earthquake will produce a much higher tsunami wave (up to 5 m) than those of the other two source zones (up to 1.5 m). This implies that tsunami scenarios for Mediterranean Sea countries must necessarily be computed at the scale of the entire basin. Our work represents a pilot study for constructing a basin-wide tsunami scenario database to be used for tsunami hazard assessment and early warning.

    Description: We report high-resolution paleomagnetic records obtained from six piston cores recovered on the continental rise of theWilkes Land Basin (WLB), East Antarctica, in the frame of the Italian/Australian Wilkes Land Glacial History (WEGA) project. The studied cores, with a length of ca. 4m each, were collected from the gentle and steep sides of sedimentary ridges present in the lower part of the continental rise, and consist of very fine-grained sediments. Paleomagnetic measurements were carried out on u-channel samples. Apart from a low-coercivity magnetic overprint, removed after the first steps of alternating field demagnetization, each core is characterized by a well defined characteristic remanent magnetization. Paleomagnetic inclinations fluctuate around the expected value (of ca. −77◦) for such high latitude sites and always indicate normal magnetic polarity. Short period oscillations to anomalously shallow paleomagnetic inclinations (up to −20◦) were identified at different levels of the sampled sequences; positive (reverse) inclination values were however not observed. Specific rock magnetic measurements indicate a substantial homogeneity of the magnetic mineralogy in the sampled sequences. For each core we reconstructed curves of relative paleointensity (RPI, as computed by NRM20mT/κ and NRM20mT/ARM20mT) variation of the geomagnetic field. An original age modelwas established by tuning the individual RPI curves with the available global and regional reference RPI stacks. Paleomagnetic results, supported by other limited bio- and chronostratigraphic constraints, establish that all the cores are Late Pleistocene in age: two provide an expanded record of the last ca. 30 ka (PC18 and PC19), three span the last ca. 100, 200 and 300 ka (respectively, PC25, PC27 and PC26), and one reaches back to ca. 780 ka (PC20), approaching the Brunhes–Matuyama transition. Thus, the WEGA paleomagnetic record provides the first experimental data documenting the dynamics and amplitude of the geomagnetic field variations at high southern latitudes during the Brunhes Chron. The individual normalized RPI records were merged in aWEGARPI stacking curve spanning the last 300 kyr. The comparison of theWEGARPI individual and stacked curves with the global references RPI stacks shows that geomagnetic paleointensity variations, with periods longer than a few to tens kyr depending on the sedimentation rate, can be safely recognized in this sector of the peri-Antarctic margins. Furthermore, the stacking of the individual ChRM inclination records indicates that the recurrent swings to shallow paleomagnetic inclinations may be correlated to the main known geomagnetic excursions of the Brunhes Chron, supporting the validity of the age models. The reconstructed average sediment accumulation rates for the individual cores range from 0.6 to 19 cm/ka and are compatible with their position within the WLB, with the lowest rates found close to the ridge of the sedimentary drifts. Moreover, the high-resolution age models obtained in this study provide original constraints to assess chronology, rates and amplitudes of the climatic and environmental processes affecting this key area of the peri-Antarctic margins during the Late Pleistocene.

    Description: Volcanic eruptions may create a wide range of risks in inhabited areas and, as a consequence, major economic damage to the surrounding territory. An example of volcanic hazard was given between 1998 and 2001 by Mt. Etna volcano, in Italy, with its frequent paroxysmal explosive activity that caused more than a hundred fire-fountain episodes. In the period January–June 2000, in particular, 64 lava fountains took place at the Southeast Crater. During the most intense explosive phase of each episode, a sustained column often formed, reaching up to 6 km above the eruptive vent. Then, the column started to expand laterally causing more or less copious tephra fallout on the slopes of Etna; ash and lapilli, therefore, constituted a serious danger for vehicular and air traffic. A software and hardware warning system was developed to mitigate the volcanic hazard indicating the areas affected by potential ash and lapilli fallout. The alert system was mainly based on the good correspondence between the pattern of volcanic tremor amplitude and the evolution of explosive activity. When a fixed tremor threshold was exceeded, a semiautomatic process started to send faxes to Civil Defence and Municipalities directly affected by tephra fallout, together with information on wind directions from the Meteorological Office. The application of this methodology, during the last 14 eruptive episodes in 2000 and the 14 events occurred in 2001, demonstrated the good correspondence between the forecasts on the areas affected by tephra fallout and the effective tephra distribution on land. Despite the integrity of the performance provided by the alert system, small discrepancies occurred in the technical procedure of alerting, for which possible solutions have been discussed. The improvement of this type of system, could become basic for the Etnean region and be proposed for similar volcanic areas throughout the world.

    Description: Major and trace element and Sr–Nd–Hf–Pb isotopic data for the most primitive Tertiary lavas from the Veneto region (South-Eastern Alps, Italy) show the typical features of HIMU hotspot volcanism, variably diluted by a depleted asthenospheric mantle component (87Sr/86Sri=0.70306–0.70378; "Ndi=+3.9 to +6.8; "Hfi=+6.4 to +8.1, 206Pb/204Pbi=18.786–19.574). P-wave seismic tomography of the mantle below the Veneto region shows the presence of low-velocity anomalies at depth, which is consistent with possible upwellings of plume material. Between the depths of 100–250 km the velocity anomalies are approximately 2–2.5% slower than average, implying a temperature excess of about 220–280 K, in agreement with estimates for other mantle plumes in the world. In this context, the Veneto volcanics may represent the shallow expression of a mantle upflow. The presence of a HIMU-DM component in a collision environment has significant geodynamic implications. Slab detachment and ensuing rise of deep mantle material into the lithospheric gap is proposed to be a viable mechanism of hotspot magmatism in a subduction zone setting.

    Description: In the period 2-6 April 2007 a seismic survey was carried out at Solfatara Volcano, with the aim of inferring the shallow structure and evaluating local site effects. Seismic noise was recorded by five circular seismic arrays deployed in different areas of the crater. The geometry was designed in order to obtain also a sub-configuration consisting of two profiles oriented in the NS and E-W directions. An other seismic station was installed on the eastern rim of the crater, for a hardrock reference. A preliminary spectral analysis was performed on some samples of seismic noise recorded during the experiment. As future development, surface wave dispersion will be obtained by using array techniques, such as the Spatial Autocorrelation method (SPAC) of Aki (1957) and its recent modifications (MSPAC, Bettig et al, 2001; CCA, Cho et al., 2004). The shear-wave velocity models will be inferred for each array from the inversion of the dispersion curves. Moreover experimental site transfer functions will be evaluated for each station, using both Nakamura’s technique and the reference-site spectral ratio method. The high density of the deployment and the large number of the sampled sites will allow to obtain a detailed shallow velocity structure and to map resonance frequencies and amplification values in different areas of the crater.

    Description: We are concerned with the detection and location of small seismic events, such as can be encountered in monitoring hydro-fracturing with surface sensors. Ambient seismic noise is the main problem in detection of weak seismic phases from these events, particularly as the sites of interest are often within or near producing fields. Band-pass filtering and stacking are the most widely used techniques for enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in passive seismic experiments, but they are of limited value when noise and signal share the same frequency band. Seismic arrays can be used to reduce the unwanted noise (e.g., traffic noise, pumping noise, scattering ground roll) by delay-and-sum techniques (also called beamforming) or by frequencywavenumber filtering. Beamforming maximizes the array response for the assumed direction and slowness of the signal. Whereas in some situations it can be highly effective, and the azimuth and slowness of the signal can be determined by a grid search approach, it is vulnerable to contamination by side-lobe energy, particularly for broadband signals and noise (Rost and Thomas, 2002). Frequencywavenumber filtering can be very effective but requires regularly spaced arrays and implicitly assumes plane-wave propagation. Both methods perform poorly when the waveform changes significantly between stations of the array, as might be caused, for example, by differences in site response. In this article, we present a multichannel Wiener filtering technique, which allows the removal of coherent noise from three-component 2D arrays without making a priori assumptions about the mode of propagation (e.g., no planewave assumption is required for the noise field). We test the effectiveness of this filter with two case studies. In the first case, we add synthetic signals of varying strengths to actual noise data recorded with a hexagonal array during hydrofracturing within a producing oil field in Wyoming, USA. Using this test, we are able to provide estimates of the smallest event detectable with the filtered data, and compare the results with conventional techniques, such as stacking. The second test case is a dense, small-aperture 2D seismic array of 95 stations placed within an area of 130 m 56 m on a landslide deposit in the Northern Apennines, Italy. Numerous microearthquakes have been recorded with this array, whose faint P-phases serve as an ideal data set for testing filtering techniques. Using the two case studies, we discuss the effectiveness of the multichannel Wiener filter on SNR improvement, and show that including horizontal components into the analysis increases the SNR improvement more than using only vertical components.

    Description: One of the most challenging issues about the Tertiary–Quaternary alkaline magmatism spreading across the Euro-Mediterranean region is the assessment of both the nature of its mantle source and the mechanism responsible for the common HIMU-like (High μ=high 238U/204Pb) character of erupted lavas, enduring over about 100 million years in diverse tectonic environments. In this paper we try to reconcile geochemical and geophysical data through a multidisciplinary investigation on geochemistry, timing and locations of the main Na-rich alkaline volcanic centers, seismic tomographic images and plate kinematics. We propose that the common component of the Euro-Mediterranean mantle derives from a contamination episode triggered by the rise of the Central Atlantic Plume (CAP) head. Plate reconstruction shows that at late Cretaceous- Paleocene time the oldest magmatic centers of the Euro-Mediterranean region were located more than 2000 km SW of their present day position, in proximity of the CAP hot spot location, where seismic tomography detects a broad low seismic velocity region in the lower mantle. The northeastward migration of the Eurasian and African plates could have involved also part of the CAP contaminated mantle, which moved in the same direction being coupled to the lithospheric plates, thus explaining the presence of geochemically-uniform material spread in the sub-lithospheric Euro-Mediterranean mantle. During the Tertiary, regional-scale convection and related processes such as rifting, back-arc spreading, slab detachment/windows, may have favored upwelling and partial melting of the frayed plume head material via adiabatic decompression, shaping the spatial and temporal distribution of HIMU-like volcanics. The growing supply of subducted lithosphere may explain as well the increase of crustal isotopic signatures of alkaline magmas with time. In our opinion, the Euro-Mediterranean upper mantle contamination can be eventually related to a global event occurred during the Cretaceous as a consequence of a mantle avalanche caused by the Tethys closure.

The Antelope software suite has been chosen as the common basis for real time data exchange, rapid location of earthquakes and alerting. The Antelope software suite has the capability to exchange data in real time among data centres: for this purpose the standard “orb2orb” software module is used. It uses a proprietary protocol and a point-to-point client/server architecture to exchange data. The last release of the Antelope software suite contains a more sophisticated version of this data exchange module: it is named “orbxchange”. “orbxchange” is a multithreaded version of “orb2orb” which supervises multiple “orb2orb” copies specified in a parameter file; it has the option of switching to alternate servers when no data is being copied from the primary. A distributed real time seismic database has been so established by connecting ZAMG, CRS/OGS, DST/UTS and ARSO Antelope servers with “orbxchange” modules. A test of the above described “orbxchange” features has been conducted artificially shutting down the Antelope servers and/or the data links between them: the results in the data coverage of the multiple copies of the distributed database will be shown. The expected improvement in data availability not only will be very useful for the institutional activities (like rapid earthquake location with magnitude estimation) of the four institutions involved in this test, but moreover its natural extension will be in more mission critical applications, like in public civil protection applications and rapid notification of inherent authorities.

    Description: Data for major, minor and trace elements in groundwaters from Mt. Etna volcano collected in 1994, 1995 and 1997 were analysed using Cluster Analysis (CA). Two groups of sampling sites were identified (named clusters A and B), mainly on the basis of their different salinity and content of dissolved CO2. The highest levels of both of these parameters were observed in the sites of cluster A, located in the lower south-western and central eastern flanks of the volcano. For both of the statistical groups, CA was repeated taking into account the mean values of each parameter in time, and the results allowed us to recognize four distinct groups of parameters for each group of sites on the basis of their temporal patterns. Four different types of temporal patterns were recognised: concave, convex, increasing, decreasing. The observed changes were basically interpreted as a result of the different response of dissolved chemical elements to changes in the aqueous environment and/or in their solubility/mobility in water due to different rates of input of magmatic gases to Etna’s aquifers. The main changes occurred in 1995, when Etna’s volcanic activity resumed after a two-year period of rest. The temporal changes of the majority of the studied parameters (water temperature, water conductivity, Eh, pH, Al, Mg, B, Ca, Cl-, Hg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Se, Si, Sr, Cr Zn and pCO2) were not cluster-dependent, therefore they were not apparently affected by differences in water salinity between the two groups of sampling sites. A limited number of parameters (Ti, K, Li, HCO3-, As, Fe, SO42-, Cu and V), however, showed different behaviours depending on the cluster of sites which they belonged to, thus suggesting their apparent dependency on water salinity.

    Description: In order to test the potentiality of soil CO2 diffuse degassing measurements for the study of underground mass and heat transfer in geothermal systems detailed surveys were performed at Latera Caldera which is an excellent test site, due to the abundant available subsurface data. Over 2500 measurements of soil CO2 flux revealed that endogenous CO2 at Latera Caldera concentrates on a NE-SW band coinciding with a structural high of fractured Mesozoic limestones hosting a water-dominated high-enthalpy geothermal reservoir. The total hydrothermal CO2 degassing from the structural high has been evaluated at 350 t d-1 from an area of 3.1 km2. It has been estimated that such a CO2 release would imply a geothermal liquid flux of 263 kg s-1, with a heat release of 239 MW. The chemical and isotopic composition of the gas indicates a provenance from the geothermal reservoir and that CO2 is partly originated by thermal metamorphic decarbonation in the hottest deepest parts of the system and partly has a likely mantle origin. The ratios of CO2, H2, CH2 and CO to Ar, were used to estimate the T-P conditions of the reservoir. Results cluster at T ~ 200-300°C and PCO2 ~ 100-200 bars, close to the actual well measurements. Finally the approach proved to be an excellent tool to investigate the presence of an active geothermal reservoir at depth and that the H2-CO2-CH4-CO-Ar gas composition is a useful T-P geochemical indicator for such CO2 rich geothermal systems.

    Description: The controversial relationship between the orogenic segments of the Western Alps and the Northern Apennines is here explored integrating recently published 3D tomographic models of subduction with new and re-interpreted geological observations from the eclogitic domain of the Voltri Massif (Ligurian Alps, Italy), where the two belts joint each other. The Voltri Massif is here described as an extensional domain accommodating the opposing outward migration of the Alpine and Apennine thrust fronts, since about 30–35 Ma. Using tomographic images of the upper mantle and paleotectonic reconstructions, we propose that this extensional setting represents the surface manifestation of an along strike change in polarity of the subducted oceanic slab whose polarity changed laterally in space and in time. Our tectonic model suggests that the westward shift of the Alpine thrust front from the Oligocene onward was the consequence of the toroidal asthenospheric flow induced by the retreat of the Apenninic slab.

    Description: A permanent automatic infrared (IR) station was installed at Solfatara crater, the most active zone of Campi Flegrei caldera. After a positive in situ calibration of the IR camera, we analyze 2175 thermal IR images of the same scene from 2004 to 2007. The scene includes a portion of the steam heated hot soils of Solfatara. The experiment was initiated to detect and quantify temperature changes of the shallow thermal structure of a quiescent volcano such as Solfatara over long periods. Ambient temperature results as the main parameter affecting IR temperatures while air humidity and rain control image quality. A geometric correction of the images was necessary to remove the effects of slow movement of the camera. After a suitable correction the images give a reliable and detailed picture of the temperature changes, over the period October 2004 – January 2007, which suggests origin of the changes were linked to anthropogenic activity, vegetation growth and to the increase of the flux of hydrothermal fluids in the area of the hottest fumaroles. Two positive temperature anomalies were registered after the occurrence of two seismic swarms which affected the hydrothermal system of Solfatara in October 2005 and October 2006. It is worth noting that these signs were detected in a system characterized by a low level of activity with respect to systems affected by real volcanic crisis where more spectacular results will be expected. Results of the experiment show that this kind of monitoring system can be a suitable tool for volcanic surveillance.

    Description: The last strong earthquake that occurred in the southern Apennines, the Irpinia earthquake on 23 November 1980 (M 6.9), was characterized by a complex rupture mechanism that ruptured three different faults (Bernard and Zollo 1989). This earthquake was well studied, and the quantity of data available has allowed a very detailed definition of the geometry and mechanisms of faults activated during this seismic event (Westaway and Jackson 1987; Pantosti and Valensise 1990). Even more than 20 years after the main event, the seismotectonic environment that contains the fault system on which the 1980 earthquake occurred shows continued background seismic activity including moderate-sized events such as the 1996 (M 5.1), 1991 (M 5.1) and 1990 (M 5.4) events. Moreover, the locations of the microearthquakes (taken from the database of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, INGV) define an epicentral area with a geometry and extent surprisingly similar to that of the 1980 earthquake and its aftershocks (figure 1A). These simple observations suggest that it may be possible to study the preparation cycles of strong earthquakes on active faults by studying the microseismicity between seismic events. With this in mind, a seismic network of large dynamic range was planned and is now in an advanced phase of completion in the southern Apennines. Called ISNet (Irpinia Seismic Network), it is equipped with sensors that can record high-quality seismic signals from both small-magnitude and strong earthquakes, from which it will be possible to retrieve information about the rupture process and try to understand the scaling relationships between small and large events. Due to its high density, wide dynamic range, and advanced data-acquisition and data-transmission technologies, the network is being upgraded to become the core infrastructure of a prototype system for seismic early warning and rapid post-event ground-shaking evaluation in the Campania region, which has seismic hazard that ranks among the highest in Italy (Cinti et al. 2004). ISNet will be devoted to real-time estimation of earthquake location and magnitude and to measuring peak ground-motion parameters so as to provide rapid ground-shaking maps for the whole of the Campania region. The information provided by ISNet during the first seconds of a potentially damaging seismic event can be used to activate several types of security measures, such as the shutdown of critical systems and lifelines (Iervolino et al. 2006). The implementation of a modern seismic network involves many different research and technological aspects related to the development of sophisticated data management and processing. The communication systems need to rapidly generate useful, robust, and secure alert notifications. Here we provide a general technical and seismological overview of ISNet's complex architecture and implementation.

    Description: Helium isotope ratios of olivine and pyroxene from Plio-Quaternary volcanic rocks from Southern Italy (each of the seven Eolian Islands, Mt. Vulture, Etna, Ustica, Pantelleria), range from 2.3 to 7.1 Ra. A good correlation emerges with the 3He/4He of fumarolic fluids. Importantly the phenocryst 3He/4He correlate with whole rock Sr isotopes (0.70309-0.70711) reflecting the mixing of two sources. Crustal contamination of magmatic He isotopes is recorded only occasionally (e.g., pyroxenes from Vulcano). The He isotope values of Pantelleria, Etna, Iblei, Ustica, Alicudi and Filicudi (7.0 ± 0.6 Ra) define the mantle composition least affected by subduction. That these characterise volcanoes from a variety of tectonic regimes (subduction-related, intraplate, rifting) suggest a common origin of geochemical features and are consistent with a HIMU-type mantle that is either younger than the Cook-Austral island end-member, or one with lower 238U/204Pb. When merged with data from the Roman Comagmatic Province (Latium and Campania), a remarkably strong He-Sr isotope correlation is apparent. The general northward decrease in 3He/4He corresponds to an increase in 87Sr/86Sr and decrease in 143Nd/144Nd and 206Pb/204Pb that is due to increasing metasomatic enrichment of the mantle wedge via subduction of the Ionian Adriatic plate since 30 Ma. Calculations based on the ingrowth of 4He in the wedge and on the 4He content of the subducting crust show that mechanisms of enrichment in radiogenic He are effective only if the wedge is strongly depleted in He relative to best estimates of the depleted mantle.

    Description: In magmatic systems having CO2 as main volatile, the dynamics of magma ascent and decompression can be faster than that of CO2 diffusion into bubbles. In this case, the diffusivity ratios between CO2 and noble gases, rather than solubility ratios, are the main control of the proportions of CO2 and noble gases in the exsolving gas phase. We have developed a model of bubble growth in silicate melts that calculates the extent of both CO2 supersaturation and kinetic fractionation among noble gases in vesicles in relation to the decompressive rate of basaltic melts. By including the stateof art calculations of solubilities and diffusivities of the involved volatiles, the model predicts that magma degassing at low pressure fractionates both He/Ar and He/CO2 ratios by a similar extent, due to comparable Ar and CO2 diffusivity. In contrast, the slower CO2 diffusion at high pressure causes early kinetic effects on Ar/CO2 ratio and dramatically changes the degassing paths. When applied to the global He-Ar-CO2 dataset of fluid inclusions in mid-ocean-ridge glasses, the model displays that non-equilibrium fractionations among He, Ar and CO2, driven by their different diffusivities in silicate melts, are common in most of the natural conditions of magma decompression and their signature strongly depends on pressure of degassing. The different geochemical signatures among suites of data coming from different ridge segments mainly depend on the depth of the magma chamber where the melt was stored. Moreover, variations inside a single suite emerge due to the interplay between variable ascent speed of magma and cooling rate of the emplaced lava. As a result, two data groups coming from the Pito Seamount suite (Easter Microplate East ridge), showing different degree of CO2 supersaturation and He/Ar fractionation, provide ascent rates which differ by ten folds or even more. The large variations in both the He/CO2 and Ar/CO2 ratios at almost constant He/Ar, displayed in products coming from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge 24–30°N segment and the Rodriguez Triple Junction, require magma storage and degassing processes occurring at high-pressure conditions. In contrast, the simultaneous increase in both He/CO2 and He/Ar of the East Pacific Rise and South-East Indian Ridge data sets suggests the dominance of low-pressure fractionation, implying that the shallow magma chambers are at a lower depth than those of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge 24–30°N and Rodriguez Triple Junction. Our conclusions support the presence of a relationship between spreading rate and depth of high-temperature zones below ridges, and are consistent with the depth of magma chambers as suggested from seismic studies. Finally, the non-equilibrium degassing model provides striking constraints on the compositions of noble gases and carbon in mantle-derived magmas. Our results dispense in fact with the supposed need for He-Ar-CO2 heterogeneities in the upper mantle, because the degassing of a single, popping-rock-like primary magma is able to explain all the available data.

    Description: Frictional melt is implied in a variety of processes such as seismic slip, ice skating,and meteorite combustion. A steady state can be reached when melt is continuously produced and extruded from the sliding interface, as shown recently in a number of laboratory rock friction experiments. A thin, low-viscosity, high-temperature melt layer is formed resulting in low shear resistance. A theoretical solution describing the coupling of shear heating, thermal diffusion, and extrusion is obtained, without imposing a priori the melt thickness. The steady state shear traction can be approximated at high slip rates by the theoretical form : tau=sn^[1/4] (A/sqrt[R]) sqrt[ log[2 V/W] / (V/W) ] under a normal stress sn, slip rate V, radius of contact area R (A is a dimensional normalizing factor and W is a characteristic rate). Although the model offers a rather simplified view of a complex process, the predictions are compatible with experimental observations. In particular, we consider laboratory simulations of seismic slip on earthquake faults. A series of highvelocity rotary shear experiments on rocks, performed for sn in the range 1–20 MPa and slip rates in the range 0.5–2 m/s, is confronted to the theoretical model. The behavior is reasonably well reproduced, though the effect of radiation loss taking place in the experiment somewhat alters the data. The scaling of friction with sn, R, and V in the presence of melt suggests that extrapolation of laboratory measures to real Earth is a highly nonlinear, nontrivial exercise.

    Description: The main aim of the present work consists in the validation of stochastic method for simulating weak ground motion in a diffusive regime due to low-to-moderate magnitude earthquakes, and in particular in its application to a volcanic area. We simulated the peak ground acceleration and the response acceleration spectra caused by two earthquakes scenarios (MD = 4.3 and MD = 5.4) at Mt. Vesuvius volcanic area by using the stochastic finite-fault simulation method. We validated the stochastic methodology by combining source, path and site parameters of the investigated area considering the time duration parameter, Trms, calculated on the study seismograms. The values of time durations are confirmed by calculating the same parameter, Trms, on the seismogram energy envelope described by multiple scattering models, in terms of scattering and the intrinsic dissipation coefficient. Initially, the simulations were evaluated for 10 local earthquakes (1.7 ≤ MD ≤ 3.6) that occurred at Mt Vesuvius in 1999 and are then compared with the observed data. The comparison between simulated and observed seismograms has been used to calibrate the stochastic procedure, and has been considered as the starting point for simulating ground motion for the scenario earthquake (MD 〉 3.6) that could occur in the study area. The scenario earthquake and the relative fault features were chosen on the base of statistical, tectonic, structural and historical studies of the study area. We simulated ground motions for a maximum magnitude value, Mmax, of 4.3, determined from examination of the Gutenberg-Richter law for the study area, and also for an Mmax = 5.4, a magnitude that is associated with the earthquakes that struck the ancient town of Pompei 17 years before the eruption of Mt Vesuvius that occurred in 79 AD. The largest values of Amax for the MD = 4.3 seismic event are in the range of 0.140 g to 0.029 g. In the case of MD = 5.4, we obtain PGA values in the range between 0.17 and 0.55 g.

    Description: Micro and moderate-sized earthquake recordings (ML=1.8-4.1) of local events have been used to quantify attenuation and site effects in the vicinity of the Bursa City of Marmara region, Turkey. We used digital records from 69 local events recorded at short hypocentral distance (r 〈 60 km) in the region. The digital seismograms analyzed were recorded by temporary network of six seismic stations each of them deployed in a different geological site. Non-parametric inversion method was applied to acceleration records from tectonically active Bursa region and results obtained using a two-step inversion. At the first step, we determined attenuation functions by analyzing the distance dependence of the spectral amplitudes and retrieved values of Qs = 38.26f 0.73. The attenuation functions including anelasticity of heterogeneous medium and geometrical spreading effect were used to correct the S-wave spectral records. At the second step, the corrected amplitudes were inverted to separate source and site response for 21 different frequencies selected between 0.5 and ~25 Hz. The near surface attenuation was also estimated and found that the spectral decay parameter  is smaller for stations located on rock, Igdır, (SIGD, ~0.006) compared to stations located on soft sediment, Hamitler, (SHMT, ~0.02). Çukurca, (SCKR) is the most important site having about 3.5 amplification value at 1.8 Hz. Demirtaş, (SDEM) amplifying the spectral amplitudes about 2.8 times at 2.5 Hz, SHMK about 3 times at between 2.5 and 3.5 Hz and SHMT about up to 3 times at between 1.5 and 4 Hz. However, stations located on the Uludağ Mountain Masif (SKAY and SIGD), which correspond to a deep Limestone geological unit, have the smallest amplification, that values between 0.6 and 1.4.

    Description: We compare insolation results calculated from two well-known empirical formulas (Seckel and Beaudry’s SB73 formula and the original Smithsonian (SMS) formula) and a radiative transfer model using input data predicted from meteorological weather-forecast models, and review the accuracy of each method. Comparison of annual mean daily irradiance values for clear-sky conditions between the two formulas shows that, relative to the SMS, the SB73 underestimates spring values by 9 W m-2 in the northern Adriatic Sea, although overall there is a good agreement between the annual results calculated with the two formulas. We also elucidate the effect on SMS of changing the ‘Sun-Earth distance factor ( f )’, a parameter which is commonly assumed to be constant in the oceanographic context. Results show that the mean daily solar radiation for clear-sky conditions in the northern Adriatic Sea can be reduced as much as 12 W m-2 during summer due to a decrease in the f value. Lastly, surface irradiance values calculated from a simple radiative transfer model (GM02) for clear-sky conditions are compared to those from SB73 and SMS. Comparison with in situ data in the northern Adriatic Sea shows that the GM02 estimate gives more realistic surface irradiance values than SMS, particularly during summer. Additionally, irradiance values calculated by GM02 using the buoy meteorological fields and ECMWF (The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) meteorological data show the suitability of the ECMWF data usage. Through tests of GM02 sensitivity to key regional meteorological factors, we explore the main factors contributing significantly to a reduction in summertime solar irradiance in the Adriatic Sea.

    Description: This study presents the results of hydrogeochemical and seismological studies carried out at Mt. Vesuvius during the period June 1998 – December 2005. The data-set used for the seismological analysis was collected by: 1. The permanent seismic network of the INGV -Osservatorio Vesuviano, at the present composed of 11 short-period 1-Hz Mark L4C and Geotech S13 geophones and 2 broad band (40s) Guralp CMG40T seismometers; 2. Five digital stations (Lennartz PCM 5800) equipped with 3-component 1-Hz Lennartz LE-3Dlite sensors also operate in the area, in local recording mode. The monitered geochemical parameters (water temperature, pH, Eh, major ions, dissolved gases, 18O/16O ratios of groundwater) were detected at 10 private wells and 1 spring. Continuous soil temperature of the fumarolic fields was measured by a permanent device Gemini Tinytag Plus logger. Hydrogeochemical data show the occurrence of smooth long-term variations in the total dissolved salts (TDS) and bicarbonate contents of the groundwaters, accompanied by a general decline of water temperatures. These variations do not depend on changes in hydrologic regime, as suggested by the analysis of temporal distributions of air temperature and rainfall amount in the Vesuvius area. The changes in the geochemical pararameters are accompanied by a slight variations in both the seismicity rate and energy release. A further relationship between seismic activity and fluid discharge rate is highlighted by a particular episode occurred in August 2005, when a soil thermal anomaly was observed few weeks before the occurrence of a very shallow earthquake. Moment tensor analysis of this earthquake suggests that the most plausible source mechanism is a shear faulting combined with a tensile crack opening. This feature is often observed in volcanic areas and it is usually related to fluid-/gas-driven rock fracturing. The observed seismological, hydrological and geochemical temporal changes are interpreted not as changes of the volcanic system, but in terms of an external forcing, identified in the variation of the regional and local stress field acting on the volcano.

    Description: This study describes the development and evaluation of an oceanographic three-dimensional variational (3D-VAR) data assimilation scheme based on a novel specification of the background error covariances. The new 3D-VAR scheme allows for regional variability of the background error covariance matrix, complex coastal boundary conditions and variable bottom topography. The error covariance matrix is formed by the successive application of linear operators that can consider vertical EOFs, horizontal covariance functions that consider coastlines, sea level corrections that vary from shallow to deep regions and divergence dumping of velocity corrections near the coasts. The scheme is applied to the Mediterranean Sea and the quality of analysis is assessed by comparing background estimates with observations in the period October 2005–October 2006.

    Description: Since 1997 the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) in Italy has been involved in the development of the airborne RES system named Glacio RADAR, which is continuously upgraded. Radio Echo Sounding (RES) techniques are widely used in glaciological measurements. They are based on the use of radar systems, to obtain information concerning ice thickness of ice sheets and ice shelves, internal layering of glaciers, detection of inhomogeneities, exploration of subglacial lakes and identification of physical nature of subglacial interface. The Glacio RADAR is mounted on an aircraft and flies at an altitude around 300m above the ice surface during the survey. The first prototype operates in bistatic mode with separate transmit and receive one wire folded dipole installed beneath the aircraft wings. It works at 60 MHz with an envelope pulse width variable between 0.3 s and 1 s. The receiving window is 64 s which implies a maximum penetration depth (range) in the ice of about 5.3 km. The horizontal sampling rate is 10 traces/s at a mean aircraft speed of about 70 m/s. This would produce roughly 143 traces per kilometre (horizontal resolution of 1 trace every 7 m). The Navigation and geographical information is based on a on board GPS receiver giving longitude, latitude, altitude and time for the acquired radar trace. This radar was used in several Italian Antarctic Expeditions (1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003) and highlights of data results from these expeditions are presented here.

    Description: This study presents the results of 90 seismic ambient noise measurements in Palermo, the main city of Sicily (Italy). The dataset has been processed using the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVNSR) technique and interpreted in terms of local geology, which is characterized by the presence of alluvial sediments of two riverbeds masked by urbanization since the seventeenth century. HVNSRs show significant variations in the study area: when the transition stiff to soft is crossed, a typical spectral peak appears in the HVNSRs, mostly in the frequency band 1–2 Hz, and exceeding a factor of 3 in amplitude. Using available information on subsurface geological structure, we compute theoretical 1D and 2D transfer functions. The resonance frequencies of soft soils obtained by HVNSR are well reproduced by the fundamental frequencies from numerical modeling. The distribution of frequency peaks of HVNSR and their amplitudes are also compared with the local damage caused by historical earthquakes. Previous studies demonstrated that damage variations in Palermo were controlled more by near-surface geology than building vulnerability. A uniform vulnerability is an ideal condition to test statistical methods and their capability in seeking correlation between HVNSR and potential damage due to local geological conditions. We apply two well-established multivariate statistical methodologies (factor analysis and canonical correlation) to the HVNSR dataset and macroseismic data (damage grades of the European macroseismic scale). Through these analyses we quantify the significance of the correlation between the HVNSR peak in the low-medium frequency range (0.5–3 Hz) and the occurrence of the highest damage grades. This approach allows us (1) to estimate the threshold value in the resulting linear combination of the HVNSR amplitudes, which separates zones of light damage from zones of significant damage, and therefore (2) to improve the spatial definition of potentially high hazard zones through a denser grid of microtremor measurements.

    Description: Abstract In this paper, we present a complete morphological characterization of the ash particles erupted on 18 December 2002 from Etna volcano, Italy. The work is based on the acquisition and processing of bidimensional digital images carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to obtain shape parameters by image analysis. We measure aspect ratio (AR), form factor (FF), compactness (CC), and rectangularity (RT) of 2065 ash particles with size between 0.026 and 1.122 mm. We evaluate the variation of these parameters as a function of the grainsize. Ash particles with a diameter of 〈0.125 mm vary from mostly equant to very equant, ash particles between 0.125 and 0.250 mm have an intermediate shape, and particles with diameters 〉0.250 mm are subelongate. We find that, on average, particles with a diameter of 〈0.250 mm are subrounded, particles between 0.250 and 0.50 mm are subangular, and particles 〉0.50 mm are angular. Using this morphological analysis and an empirical relation between the drag coefficient (CD) and Reynolds number (Re) of Wilson and Huang (Earth Planet Sci Lett 44:311–324, 1979), we calculate the terminal settling velocities (VWH). The comparisons between these velocities and those calculated with the formula of Kunii and Levenspiel (Fluidization engineering. Wiley, New York, pp 97, 1969) (VKL), which considers ash particles as spheres, show that VKL are in average 1.28 greater than VWH. Hence, we quantify the systematic error on the spatial distribution of the mass computed around the volcano carried out by tephra dispersal models when the particles are assumed to be spherical.

    Description: Many ancient structures such as temples were constructed on the basis of a very strict plan and excellent workmanship. For this reason, even their slight deformation due to various effects (ground instability, earthquake oscillations, etc.) can be identified, and it is possible to discriminate between different types of deformation due to earthquakes and those due to other natural causes or to anthropogenic effects. Two study cases are presented here: the Propylaia on the Acropolis and the temple of Hephaistos (Hephaisteion) in the Agora at Athens. In both buildings deformation was produced by earthquakes.

    Description: The archaeological site of Capo d’Orlando, located in NE Sicily was intensively inhabited during the Roman and Byzantine periods (3rd to the 7th century AD) during which a bath complex probably associated to a large villa extending seawards was built. Archaeoseismological research shows that during the Byzantine period (6th -7th century AD) this complex suffered damage: (1) collapse of the bath, (2) tilting of parallel dry masonry walls in the same direction, and (3) cracking of the floor in the bath. This damage might have been produced by a seismic event, where the level of destruction indicates a strong shaking. The historic record of earthquakes prior to the year 1000 AD is probably not complete. Actually, only four earthquakes are vaguely reported in the seismic literature for this time span. This lack of historical reports on seismic events does not necessarily mean that any earthquakes happened. Archaeoseismic data show that the island was not quiescent but on the contrary suffered several earthquakes. The analysis presented here, based on detailed site surveys, deals principally with seismic causes but it also takes into account other possible causes with regard to the observed damage.

    Description: We performed experiments to determine melt concentration and strain distributions around basalt dykes in a San Carlos olivine matrix containing 10 wt% MORB. Undrained triaxial compression tests were conducted at 1473 K and confining pressure of 300MPa, at constant stresses (80-160 MPa) and constant strain rates ranging from 5x10-5s-1 to 3x10-4s-1, respectively. Melt distribution in the dyke/matrix interface was determined by image analysis and chemical profiles. Melt migration appears to be enhanced by porosity of the microstructure and by the loading conditions. The presence of the dyke does not influence the bulk strength of the sample. Highest melt concentrations, and presumably, the highest stress concentrations, are found at the tip of the dyke. The matrix deformation appears to be controlled by granular flow, but dilatancy occurs near the tip of the dyke, indicating coupled MORB transport and granular flow.

    Description: In this paper results from the application of an ocean data assimilation (ODA) system, combining a multivariate reduced-order optimal interpolator (OI) scheme with a global ocean general circulation model (OGCM), are described. The present ODA system, designed to assimilate in situ temperature and salinity observations, has been used to produce ocean reanalyses for the 1962–2001 period. The impact of assimilating observed hydrographic data on the ocean mean state and temporal variability is evaluated. A special focus of this work is on the ODA system skill in reproducing a realistic ocean salinity state. Results from a hierarchy of different salinity reanalyses, using varying combinations of assimilated data and background error covariance structures, are described. The impact of the space and time resolution of the background error covariance parameterization on salinity is addressed.

    Description: Currently biogeochemical models of the global ocean focus on simulating the coupling between prevalent physical conditions and the biogeochemical processes with the underlying assumption that coherent biological properties are a direct (or modulated) response to physics. This is one possible biogeographic characterisation of the pelagic environment, since biogeochemistry represents only one aspect of marine ecosystems. Several models are currently capable of simulating the chlorophyll distribution observed from space, though an objective validation with respect to relevant ecosystem properties is still lacking. In this paper we analyse the results of one of the most comprehensive models of ocean biogeochemistry with an emphasis on biogeographic validation sensu Longhurst (Ecological Geography of the Sea, 2007, 2nd edition, Academic Press). A set of multivariate statistical tools, Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS) and Principal Components Analysis (PCA), are used to verify the existence of pre-defined biogeographic provinces and their statistical significance. The MDS ordination indicates that the given provinces are recognizable in the model on the basis of the selected variables. Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) shows that the provinces are statistically separable and they can be more easily distinguished in terms of their environmental features rather than their biology. The underlying relationships between the physical and biological properties are investigated through correlation analyses, thus providing some insights on how the model reproduces features characteristic of the various regions. Satellite chlorophyll data have been used to demonstrate external validation at the biogeographic level. The a priori provinces as characterised by chlorophyll values cannot be statistically separated in either the data or the model. It is likely this is related to the arbitrary choice of province boundaries, which are not necessarily the same as those derivable from non-interpolated SeaWiFS data. The PCA comparison of modelled and observed chlorophyll demonstrated some objective skill in the model as it generally captures the dominant mode of the data, although severe mismatch was identified in certain regions by visual comparison (Indian and Southern Oceans). The model also overestimated seasonal variability compared to the data. The method shows promise for helping overcome problems with model verification due to undersampling of most ocean biogeochemical variables.

    Description: The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake, (Mw=7.4, USGS) occurred in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) about 80 km east of Istanbul. The mechanism of the main event was almost a pure right-lateral strike slip, and the aftershock distribution indicates that the rupture was located toward the western end of the NAFZ, (Taymaz, 1999, 2000). The earthquake affected a wide area in the Marmara region, as well as the city of Istanbul. Most of the damage and fatalities occurred in towns located on the narrow, flat shoreline of the Sea of Marmara. Since the broken fault segment traversed the densely populated and industrialized east Marmara region, damage was enormously high. Widespread liquefactions caused bearing capacity losses and consequent foundation failures in the Adapazari region, as well as extensive subsidence along the shoreline in Gölcük (Gulf of Izmit) and Sapanca. The earthquake struck also the western suburbs of Istanbul, the Avcilar region, causing severe damage on buildings even though the distance from the epicenter was about 80 km, (Cranswick, et al., 2000). In this study, we discuss the ground motion characteristics, as well as directivity and soil effects of recorded ground acceleration of the Kocaeli earthquake. Strong-motion data were obtained from the networks managed by the Bogaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory & Earthquake Research Institute, (KOERI) and by the General director of Disaster Affairs, Earthquake Research Department, (ERD). Although the distribution of the accelerometers deployed in the epicentral area seems sparse, the Izmit earthquake generated approximately twenty strong-motion records within 200 km of the fault. Maximum Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) has reached 0.41g in Adapazarı, SKR, 40 km east from the epicenter and 3 km far from the fault rupture. This value is rather small, only half of the value observed in various large earthquakes, e.g., 0.8g in the 1995 Kobe, Japan earthquake and 0.9g in the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan, earthquake, while the maximum ground velocity was about 0.8 m/s, that is comparable to the typical value observed in large earthquakes, (Yagi & Kikuchi, 2000).

    Description: This study describes a new model implementation for the Mediterranean Sea with what is currently the highest vertical resolution over the Mediterranean basin. The resolution is of 1/16 ×1/16 in the horizontal and has 72 unevenly spaced vertical levels. This model has been developed in the frame of the EU-MFSTEP project and is the operational forecast model currently used at the basin scale. The model considers an implicit free surface and this characteristic enhances the model’s capability to simulate the sea surface height variability and the net transport at the Strait of Gibraltar. In this study we show the calibration/validation experiments performed before and after the model was used for forecasting. The first experiment consists of a six-year simulation forced by a perpetual year forcing, and the other experiment is a simulation from January 1997 to December 2004, forcing the model with 6-h atmospheric forcing fields from ECMWF. The model Sea Level Anomaly has been compared for the first time with satellite SLA and with ARGO data to provide evidence of the quality of the simulation. The results show that this model is capable of reproducing most of the variability of the general circulation in the Mediterranean Sea. However, some basic model inadequacies stand out and should be corrected in the near future.

    Description: In recent years, continuous radio-noise recording is in use at many geophysical observatories, in order to detect possible earthquake precursors and/or coseismic signals. The recordings obtained indicate that electromagnetic radiation (e.g., in the range of 10-40 kH) can indeed be treated as seismic precursor. We present here the examples of successful prediction observation, which we have obtained in the Central Apennines region at the l'Aquila Observatory (Polish-Italian cooperation). A short discussion on relation between the evolution of stresses (dislocation dynamics) and electromagnetic emission supplements this paper.

    Description: Pc3 geomagnetic field fluctuations detected at low latitude (L'Aquila, Italy) during the passage of a high velocity solar wind stream, characterized by variable interplanetary magnetic field conditions, are analyzed. Higher frequency resonant fluctuations and lower frequency phenomena are simultaneously observed; the intermittent appearance and the variable frequency of the longer period modes can be well interpreted in terms of the variable IMF elements; moreover their polarization characteristics are consistent with an origin related to external waves propagating in antisunward direction. A comparison with simultaneous observations performed at Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica) provides additional evidence for a clear relationship between the IMF and Pc3 pulsations also at very high latitudes.

    Description: A statistical analysis of the polarization pattern of low-frequency geomagnetic field fluctuations (0.8-3.6 mHz) covering the entire 24-hour interval has been performed at an Antarctic station (Terra Nova Bay) and a low-latitude station (L'Aquila, Italy) during the entire 1995. The results show a complex pattern in which, in agreement with predictions, four polarization reversals occur at high latitude during the local day. A comparison with another Antarctic station, McMurdo, during a shorter interval in 1994 confirms these results. At low latitude the polarization sense in the afternoon reverses with respect to the morning, but the reversal is delayed by a few hours after the expected local noon. In Antarctica the polarization pattern does not show any dependence on frequency and season, while at L'Aquila it is better defined for frequencies below ≈2 mHz and during local summer.

    Description: In the frame of EPOT project (technological innovation and automation in the integrated applications of Electromagnetic and POTential field methods in active volcanic areas) an auto levelling magnetometer for geomagnetic field monitoring in volcanic areas, was proposed. In this paper a brief description of this magnetometer and some preliminary tests are described. In particular some characteristics of the non-diagonal elements of the field transform matrix A between the observatory system and the magnetometer placed in a far location are discussed with the relative implication when one of the two magnetometers would be located in a volcanic area.
