    Notes: Integrated petrological and structural investigations of eclogites from the eclogite zone of the Voltri Massif (Ligurian Alps) have been used to reconstruct a complete Alpine P–T deformation path from burial by subduction to subsequent exhumation. The early metamorphic evolution of the eclogites has been unravelled by correlating garnet zonation trends with the chemical variations in inclusions found in the different garnet domains. Garnet in massive eclogites displays typical growth zoning, whereas garnet in foliated eclogites shows rim-ward resorption, likely related to re-equilibration during retrogressive evolution. Garnet inclusions are distinctly different from core to rim, consisting primarily of Ca-, Na/Ca-amphibole, epidote, paragonite and talc in garnet cores and of clinopyroxene ± talc in the outer garnet domains. Quantitative thermobarometry on the inclusion assemblages in the garnet cores defines an initial greenschist-to-amphibolite facies metamorphic stage (M1 stage) at c. 450–500 °C and 5–8 kbar. Coexistence of omphacite + talc + katophorite inclusion assemblage in the outer garnet domains indicate c. 550 °C and 20 kbar, conditions which were considered as minimum P–T estimates for the M2 eclogitic stage. The early phase of retrograde reactions is polyphase and equilibrated under epidote–blueschist facies (M3 stage), characterized by the development of composite reaction textures (garnet necklaces and fluid-assisted Na-amphibole-bearing symplectites) produced at the expense of the primary M2 garnet-clinopyroxene assemblage. The blueschist retrogression is contemporaneous with the development of a penetrative deformation (D3) that resulted in a non-coaxial fabric, with dominant top-to-the-N sense of shear during rock exhumation. All of that is overprinted by a texturally late amphibolite/greenschist facies assemblages (M4 & M5 stages), which are not associated with a penetrative structural fabric. The combined P–T deformation data are consistent with an overall counter-clockwise path, from the greenschist/amphibolite, through the eclogite, the blueschist to the greenschist facies. These new results provide insights into the dynamic evolution of the Tertiary oceanic subduction processes leading to the building up of the Alpine orogen and the mechanisms involved in the exhumation of its high-pressure roots.

    Notes: Some results from a systematic study on the impedance matching conditions and on the longitudinal power distributions in planar rf discharges for CO2 lasers, are given. They show that both plasma impedance and voltage distribution are different in cw and pulsed discharge modes revealing the importance of parameters such as the interelectrode temperature distribution and the local gas density and composition. These parameters have to be taken into account when designing matching networks and voltage smoothing schemes. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Field data on Cenozoic faults and the McMurdo dyke arrays in the Reeves Glacier–Mawson Glacier area, Victoria Land, Antarctica, allow us to support noncoaxial transtensional tectonics along the N–S-trending western shoulder of the Ross Sea. Dyke injection within a crustal-scale right-lateral strike-slip shear zone is testified by magma filled, tension gash-like arrangements within some master fault zones, and by the left-stepping arrangements of dykes in the intrafault zones. The noncoaxiality of deformation is shown by the re-activation of many dyke walls as right-lateral strike-slip faults. This suggests an increase in the strike-slip component over time along the western shoulder of the Ross Sea. Our data support the relevance of transtensional to strike-slip tectonics for triggering melting and controlling the geometry and modes of magma emplacement.

    Description: The West Antarctic Rift System is one of the largest areas of crustal extension in the world. Current interpretations on its driving mechanisms mostly rely on the occurrence of one or more mantle plumes, active during the Cenozoic or the Mesozoic. Recent studies of structural-chronological relationships between emplacement of plutons, dyke swarms, and volcanic edifices since middle Eocene in northern Victoria Land imply that magma emplacement is guided by strike-slip fault systems that dissect the western rift shoulder in Victoria Land. These studies led to a critical re-examination of the arguments used to support plume models. In Victoria Land, the linear geometry of the uplift and the relative chronology of uplift and extension are inconsistent with the traditional concepts of lithospheric evolution above a mantle plume. The geochemical signature of the mafic rocks is equivocal, because both OIB and HIMU features cannot be exclusively interpreted in terms of plume activity. From a thermal point of view, magma production rates are low compared with the core part of plume-related provinces. Additionally, the hot mantle below the West Antarctic Rift System is not documented as deep as expected for mantle plumes and the shape of thermal anomaly is related to lithospheric geometry, being linear rather than having circular symmetry. The lack of any decisive evidence for plume activity is contrasted by evidence that large-scale tectonic features guide magma emplacement: the Cenozoic fault systems reactivated inherited Palaeozoic tectonic discontinuities and their activity is dynamically linked to the Southern Ocean Fracture Zones. As an alternative to both active, plume-driven rifting and passive rifting, we propose that lithospheric strike-slip deformation could have promoted transtension-related decompression melting of a subplate mantle already decompressed and veined during the late Cretaceous amagmatic extensional rift phase. Magma ascent and emplacement occurred along the main strike-slip fault systems and along the transtensional fault arrays departing from the master faults.

    Description: The Neogene–Quaternary Albegna basin (southern Tuscany, central Italy), located to the south of the active geothermal field of Monte Amiata, hosts fossil and active thermogene travertine deposits, which are used in this study to reconstruct the spatio-temporal evolution of the feeding hydrothermal system. Travertine deposition is controlled by regional tectonics that operated through distributed N-S– and approximately E-W–striking transtensional fault arrays. The geochronological data set ( 230 Th/ 234 U, uranium-series disequilibrium) indicates a general rejuvenation (from 〉350 to 〈40 ka) of the travertine deposits moving from north to south and from higher to lower elevations. Negative 13 C and positive 18 O trends with younger deposition ages and lower depositional elevations provide evidence for a change in space and time of the hydrothermal fluid supply, suggesting a progressive dilution of the endogenic fluid sources by increasing meteoric water inputs. Comparison with paleoclimate records suggests increased travertine deposition during humid interglacial periods characterized by highstands of the water table. Travertine deposits of the Albegna basin record the interactions and feedbacks among tectonics, hydrothermalism, and paleoclimate within a region of positive geothermal anomaly during the Quaternary. Our study also sheds light on the neotectonic evolution of the Tyrrhenian margin of central Italy, where hydrothermalism has been distributed along margin-transverse structures during the Pleistocene and Holocene. It is hypothesized that originally upper-crustal, margin-transverse faults have evolved to through-going crustal features during the Quaternary, providing structurally controlled pathways for hydrothermal fluids. We suggest that this was the consequence of a change in the relative magnitude of the principal stress vectors along the Tyrrhenian margin that occurred under a regional stress field dominated by a continuous extensional regime.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Asbestos nucleation and concentration in rocks are mostly associated with mechanisms of fibre formation, combined with the water-dependent mineralogical alteration produced during serpentinisation of ultramafic masses. Very little is known about the structural settings and tectonic histories that influence and control asbestos occurrence in non-serpentinised rocks, which are diffusely embedded within tectonised ophiolitic suites. Focussing on a case history provided by a tectonised metagabbro from the Ligurian Alps (northern Italy), a multiscale structural-petrographical approach is used to investigate the relationships between rock fabric and fibrous amphibole growth within the metagabbro. Meso- to micro-structural observations are used to document the role of structurally controlled fluid-rock interactions in localising the fibrous amphibole growth during ductile-to-brittle shearing (mylonitic foliation to shear veins). A qualitative structural scenario is here provided for illustrating the growth of asbestos amphiboles in shear veins during the progression of shear deformation towards semi-brittle rheological conditions. The mechanisms of structurally controlled growth of fibrous amphibole in non-serpentinised rocks imply an examination of the tectonic boundary conditions that are at the origin of the asbestos concentration in ophiolitic rocks involved in orogenic belt construction.〈/span〉

    Description: The main issue addressed in this work is the process leading to fluid subsurface entrapment and pressure increase up to hydrofracturing and, possibly, to paroxysm in a hydrothermal setting, in order to envisage such processes and mitigate their effects in the volcanically active study area and elsewhere. A field and laboratory multidisciplinary approach is used in the fossil (late Pleistocene) portion of an active hydrothermal system (Colli Albani volcano, Rome, Italy). In this area, sulfate and sulfide mineralizations and strongly altered ignimbrites are exposed. The alteration acme occurs on top of a buried normal fault, where abundant degassing is still active, and fades away in 2–3 km. Based on pervasive versus discrete alteration styles, mineral assemblages, and further evidence, proximal and distal alteration domains are recognized. Both domains underwent steam-heated advanced argillic alteration with likely temperatures up to ~400 °C in the proximal domain and less than 150 °C in the distal domain. The process of hydrothermal alteration progressively and severely depleted many elements from the most permeable rock units, whereas the lowest-permeable unit (Tufo Lionato) underwent fracture and porosity healing accompanied by both mass and volume gain. In the proximal domain, the advanced argillic hydrothermal alteration eventually formed a substantial barrier to fluids. The hydrothermal fluids accumulated in and below this barrier, which was then suddenly hydrofractured when heat-driven hydraulic pressure overcame the effective stress, thus possibly leading to hydrothermal paroxysm. The decompression associated with hydrofracturing enhanced gas exsolution and mineral precipitation from the entrapped overpressured fluids. Mineral precipitation contributed, in turn, to fracture healing and to reinitiation of a new cycle of hydrothermal fluid entrapment. The key preconditions for the occurrence of the inferred processes are the contrasting compositions of K-alkaline host rocks and acidic alteration fluids, as also previously documented in other similar settings elsewhere.
