Description: Nuclear collisions recreate conditions in the universe microseconds after the Big Bang. Only a very small fraction of the emitted fragments are light nuclei, but these states are of fundamental interest. We report the observation of antihypertritons--comprising an antiproton, an antineutron, and an antilambda hyperon--produced by colliding gold nuclei at high energy. Our analysis yields 70 +/- 17 antihypertritons ((Lambda)(3)-H) and 157 +/- 30 hypertritons (Lambda3H). The measured yields of Lambda3H ((Lambda)(3)-H) and 3He (3He) are similar, suggesting an equilibrium in coordinate and momentum space populations of up, down, and strange quarks and antiquarks, unlike the pattern observed at lower collision energies. The production and properties of antinuclei, and of nuclei containing strange quarks, have implications spanning nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.〈br /〉〈span Description: Disorders of the brain can exhibit considerable epidemiological comorbidity and often share symptoms, provoking debate about their etiologic overlap. We quantified the genetic sharing of 25 brain disorders from genome-wide association studies of 265,218 patients and 784,643 control participants and assessed their relationship to 17 phenotypes from 1,191,588 individuals. Psychiatric disorders share common variant risk, whereas neurological disorders appear more distinct from one another and from the psychiatric disorders. We also identified significant sharing between disorders and a number of brain phenotypes, including cognitive measures. Further, we conducted simulations to explore how statistical power, diagnostic misclassification, and phenotypic heterogeneity affect genetic correlations. These results highlight the importance of common genetic variation as a risk factor for brain disorders and the value of heritability-based methods in understanding their etiology.

Description: Infectious and inflammatory diseases have repeatedly shown strong genetic associations within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC); however, the basis for these associations remains elusive. To define host genetic effects on the outcome of a chronic viral infection, we performed genome-wide association analysis in a multiethnic cohort of HIV-1 controllers and progressors, and we analyzed the effects of individual amino acids within the classical human leukocyte antigen (HLA) proteins. We identified 〉300 genome-wide significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the MHC and none elsewhere. Specific amino acids in the HLA-B peptide binding groove, as well as an independent HLA-C effect, explain the SNP associations and reconcile both protective and risk HLA alleles. These results implicate the nature of the HLA-viral peptide interaction as the major factor modulating durable control of HIV infection.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a Description: We have produced a draft sequence of the rice genome for the most widely cultivated subspecies in China, Oryza sativa L. ssp. indica, by whole-genome shotgun sequencing. The genome was 466 megabases in size, with an estimated 46,022 to 55,615 genes. Functional coverage in the assembled sequences was 92.0%. About 42.2% of the genome was in exact 20-nucleotide oligomer repeats, and most of the transposons were in the intergenic regions between genes. Although 80.6% of predicted Arabidopsis thaliana genes had a homolog in rice, only 49.4% of predicted rice genes had a homolog in A. thaliana. The large proportion of rice genes with no recognizable homologs is due to a gradient in the GC content of rice coding sequences.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Yu, Jun -- Hu, Songnian -- Wang, Jun -- Wong, Gane Ka-Shu -- Li, Songgang -- Liu, Bin -- Deng, Yajun -- Dai, Li -- Zhou, Yan -- Zhang, Xiuqing -- Cao, Mengliang -- Liu, Jing -- Sun, Jiandong -- Tang, Jiabin -- Chen, Yanjiong -- Huang, Xiaobing -- Lin, Wei -- Ye, Chen -- Tong, Wei -- Cong, Lijuan -- Geng, Jianing -- Han, Yujun -- Li, Lin -- Li, Wei -- Hu, Guangqiang -- Huang, Xiangang -- Li, Wenjie -- Li, Jian -- Liu, Zhanwei -- Li, Long -- Liu, Jianping -- Qi, Qiuhui -- Liu, Jinsong -- Li, Li -- Li, Tao -- Wang, Xuegang -- Lu, Hong -- Wu, Tingting -- Zhu, Miao -- Ni, Peixiang -- Han, Hua -- Dong, Wei -- Ren, Xiaoyu -- Feng, Xiaoli -- Cui, Peng -- Li, Xianran -- Wang, Hao -- Xu, Xin -- Zhai, Wenxue -- Xu, Zhao -- Zhang, Jinsong -- He, Sijie -- Zhang, Jianguo -- Xu, Jichen -- Zhang, Kunlin -- Zheng, Xianwu -- Dong, Jianhai -- Zeng, Wanyong -- Tao, Lin -- Ye, Jia -- Tan, Jun -- Ren, Xide -- Chen, Xuewei -- He, Jun -- Liu, Daofeng -- Tian, Wei -- Tian, Chaoguang -- Xia, Hongai -- Bao, Qiyu -- Li, Gang -- Gao, Hui -- Cao, Ting -- Wang, Juan -- Zhao, Wenming -- Li, Ping -- Chen, Wei -- Wang, Xudong -- Zhang, Yong -- Hu, Jianfei -- Wang, Jing -- Liu, Song -- Yang, Jian -- Zhang, Guangyu -- Xiong, Yuqing -- Li, Zhijie -- Mao, Long -- Zhou, Chengshu -- Zhu, Zhen -- Chen, Runsheng -- Hao, Bailin -- Zheng, Weimou -- Chen, Shouyi -- Guo, Wei -- Li, Guojie -- Liu, Siqi -- Tao, Ming -- Wang, Jian -- Zhu, Lihuang -- Yuan, Longping -- Yang, Huanming -- 1 RO1 ES09909/ES/NIEHS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Apr 5;296(5565):79-92.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Beijing Genomics Institute/Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 101300, China.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11935017" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: A 2.91-billion base pair (bp) consensus sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome was generated by the whole-genome shotgun sequencing method. The 14.8-billion bp DNA sequence was generated over 9 months from 27,271,853 high-quality sequence reads (5.11-fold coverage of the genome) from both ends of plasmid clones made from the DNA of five individuals. Two assembly strategies-a whole-genome assembly and a regional chromosome assembly-were used, each combining sequence data from Celera and the publicly funded genome effort. The public data were shredded into 550-bp segments to create a 2.9-fold coverage of those genome regions that had been sequenced, without including biases inherent in the cloning and assembly procedure used by the publicly funded group. This brought the effective coverage in the assemblies to eightfold, reducing the number and size of gaps in the final assembly over what would be obtained with 5.11-fold coverage. The two assembly strategies yielded very similar results that largely agree with independent mapping data. The assemblies effectively cover the euchromatic regions of the human chromosomes. More than 90% of the genome is in scaffold assemblies of 100,000 bp or more, and 25% of the genome is in scaffolds of 10 million bp or larger. Analysis of the genome sequence revealed 26,588 protein-encoding transcripts for which there was strong corroborating evidence and an additional approximately 12,000 computationally derived genes with mouse matches or other weak supporting evidence. Although gene-dense clusters are obvious, almost half the genes are dispersed in low G+C sequence separated by large tracts of apparently noncoding sequence. Only 1.1% of the genome is spanned by exons, whereas 24% is in introns, with 75% of the genome being intergenic DNA. Duplications of segmental blocks, ranging in size up to chromosomal lengths, are abundant throughout the genome and reveal a complex evolutionary history. Comparative genomic analysis indicates vertebrate expansions of genes associated with neuronal function, with tissue-specific developmental regulation, and with the hemostasis and immune systems. DNA sequence comparisons between the consensus sequence and publicly funded genome data provided locations of 2.1 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A random pair of human haploid genomes differed at a rate of 1 bp per 1250 on average, but there was marked heterogeneity in the level of polymorphism across the genome. Less than 1% of all SNPs resulted in variation in proteins, but the task of determining which SNPs have functional consequences remains an open challenge.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Venter, J C -- Adams, M D -- Myers, E W -- Li, P W -- Mural, R J -- Sutton, G G -- Smith, H O -- Yandell, M -- Evans, C A -- Holt, R A -- Gocayne, J D -- Amanatides, P -- Ballew, R M -- Huson, D H -- Wortman, J R -- Zhang, Q -- Kodira, C D -- Zheng, X H -- Chen, L -- Skupski, M -- Subramanian, G -- Thomas, P D -- Zhang, J -- Gabor Miklos, G L -- Nelson, C -- Broder, S -- Clark, A G -- Nadeau, J -- McKusick, V A -- Zinder, N -- Levine, A J -- Roberts, R J -- Simon, M -- Slayman, C -- Hunkapiller, M -- Bolanos, R -- Delcher, A -- Dew, I -- Fasulo, D -- Flanigan, M -- Florea, L -- Halpern, A -- Hannenhalli, S -- Kravitz, S -- Levy, S -- Mobarry, C -- Reinert, K -- Remington, K -- Abu-Threideh, J -- Beasley, E -- Biddick, K -- Bonazzi, V -- Brandon, R -- Cargill, M -- Chandramouliswaran, I -- Charlab, R -- Chaturvedi, K -- Deng, Z -- Di Francesco, V -- Dunn, P -- Eilbeck, K -- Evangelista, C -- Gabrielian, A E -- Gan, W -- Ge, W -- Gong, F -- Gu, Z -- Guan, P -- Heiman, T J -- Higgins, M E -- Ji, R R -- Ke, Z -- Ketchum, K A -- Lai, Z -- Lei, Y -- Li, Z -- Li, J -- Liang, Y -- Lin, X -- Lu, F -- Merkulov, G V -- Milshina, N -- Moore, H M -- Naik, A K -- Narayan, V A -- Neelam, B -- Nusskern, D -- Rusch, D B -- Salzberg, S -- Shao, W -- Shue, B -- Sun, J -- Wang, Z -- Wang, A -- Wang, X -- Wang, J -- Wei, M -- Wides, R -- Xiao, C -- Yan, C -- Yao, A -- Ye, J -- Zhan, M -- Zhang, W -- Zhang, H -- Zhao, Q -- Zheng, L -- Zhong, F -- Zhong, W -- Zhu, S -- Zhao, S -- Gilbert, D -- Baumhueter, S -- Spier, G -- Carter, C -- Cravchik, A -- Woodage, T -- Ali, F -- An, H -- Awe, A -- Baldwin, D -- Baden, H -- Barnstead, M -- Barrow, I -- Beeson, K -- Busam, D -- Carver, A -- Center, A -- Cheng, M L -- Curry, L -- Danaher, S -- Davenport, L -- Desilets, R -- Dietz, S -- Dodson, K -- Doup, L -- Ferriera, S -- Garg, N -- Gluecksmann, A -- Hart, B -- Haynes, J -- Haynes, C -- Heiner, C -- Hladun, S -- Hostin, D -- Houck, J -- Howland, T -- Ibegwam, C -- Johnson, J -- Kalush, F -- Kline, L -- Koduru, S -- Love, A -- Mann, F -- May, D -- McCawley, S -- McIntosh, T -- McMullen, I -- Moy, M -- Moy, L -- Murphy, B -- Nelson, K -- Pfannkoch, C -- Pratts, E -- Puri, V -- Qureshi, H -- Reardon, M -- Rodriguez, R -- Rogers, Y H -- Romblad, D -- Ruhfel, B -- Scott, R -- Sitter, C -- Smallwood, M -- Stewart, E -- Strong, R -- Suh, E -- Thomas, R -- Tint, N N -- Tse, S -- Vech, C -- Wang, G -- Wetter, J -- Williams, S -- Williams, M -- Windsor, S -- Winn-Deen, E -- Wolfe, K -- Zaveri, J -- Zaveri, K -- Abril, J F -- Guigo, R -- Campbell, M J -- Sjolander, K V -- Karlak, B -- Kejariwal, A -- Mi, H -- Lazareva, B -- Hatton, T -- Narechania, A -- Diemer, K -- Muruganujan, A -- Guo, N -- Sato, S -- Bafna, V -- Istrail, S -- Lippert, R -- Schwartz, R -- Walenz, B -- Yooseph, S -- Allen, D -- Basu, A -- Baxendale, J -- Blick, L -- Caminha, M -- Carnes-Stine, J -- Caulk, P -- Chiang, Y H -- Coyne, M -- Dahlke, C -- Mays, A -- Dombroski, M -- Donnelly, M -- Ely, D -- Esparham, S -- Fosler, C -- Gire, H -- Glanowski, S -- Glasser, K -- Glodek, A -- Gorokhov, M -- Graham, K -- Gropman, B -- Harris, M -- Heil, J -- Henderson, S -- Hoover, J -- Jennings, D -- Jordan, C -- Jordan, J -- Kasha, J -- Kagan, L -- Kraft, C -- Levitsky, A -- Lewis, M -- Liu, X -- Lopez, J -- Ma, D -- Majoros, W -- McDaniel, J -- Murphy, S -- Newman, M -- Nguyen, T -- Nguyen, N -- Nodell, M -- Pan, S -- Peck, J -- Peterson, M -- Rowe, W -- Sanders, R -- Scott, J -- Simpson, M -- Smith, T -- Sprague, A -- Stockwell, T -- Turner, R -- Venter, E -- Wang, M -- Wen, M -- Wu, D -- Wu, M -- Xia, A -- Zandieh, A -- Zhu, X -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2001 Feb 16;291(5507):1304-51.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Celera Genomics, 45 West Gude Drive, Rockville, MD 20850, USA. humangenome@celera.com〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11181995" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: We report an improved draft nucleotide sequence of the 2.3-gigabase genome of maize, an important crop plant and model for biological research. Over 32,000 genes were predicted, of which 99.8% were placed on reference chromosomes. Nearly 85% of the genome is composed of hundreds of families of transposable elements, dispersed nonuniformly across the genome. These were responsible for the capture and amplification of numerous gene fragments and affect the composition, sizes, and positions of centromeres. We also report on the correlation of methylation-poor regions with Mu transposon insertions and recombination, and copy number variants with insertions and/or deletions, as well as how uneven gene losses between duplicated regions were involved in returning an ancient allotetraploid to a genetically diploid state. These analyses inform and set the stage for further investigations to improve our understanding of the domestication and agricultural improvements of maize.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Schnable, Patrick S -- Ware, Doreen -- Fulton, Robert S -- Stein, Joshua C -- Wei, Fusheng -- Pasternak, Shiran -- Liang, Chengzhi -- Zhang, Jianwei -- Fulton, Lucinda -- Graves, Tina A -- Minx, Patrick -- Reily, Amy Denise -- Courtney, Laura -- Kruchowski, Scott S -- Tomlinson, Chad -- Strong, Cindy -- Delehaunty, Kim -- Fronick, Catrina -- Courtney, Bill -- Rock, Susan M -- Belter, Eddie -- Du, Feiyu -- Kim, Kyung -- Abbott, Rachel M -- Cotton, Marc -- Levy, Andy -- Marchetto, Pamela -- Ochoa, Kerri -- Jackson, Stephanie M -- Gillam, Barbara -- Chen, Weizu -- Yan, Le -- Higginbotham, Jamey -- Cardenas, Marco -- Waligorski, Jason -- Applebaum, Elizabeth -- Phelps, Lindsey -- Falcone, Jason -- Kanchi, Krishna -- Thane, Thynn -- Scimone, Adam -- Thane, Nay -- Henke, Jessica -- Wang, Tom -- Ruppert, Jessica -- Shah, Neha -- Rotter, Kelsi -- Hodges, Jennifer -- Ingenthron, Elizabeth -- Cordes, Matt -- Kohlberg, Sara -- Sgro, Jennifer -- Delgado, Brandon -- Mead, Kelly -- Chinwalla, Asif -- Leonard, Shawn -- Crouse, Kevin -- Collura, Kristi -- Kudrna, Dave -- Currie, Jennifer -- He, Ruifeng -- Angelova, Angelina -- Rajasekar, Shanmugam -- Mueller, Teri -- Lomeli, Rene -- Scara, Gabriel -- Ko, Ara -- Delaney, Krista -- Wissotski, Marina -- Lopez, Georgina -- Campos, David -- Braidotti, Michele -- Ashley, Elizabeth -- Golser, Wolfgang -- Kim, HyeRan -- Lee, Seunghee -- Lin, Jinke -- Dujmic, Zeljko -- Kim, Woojin -- Talag, Jayson -- Zuccolo, Andrea -- Fan, Chuanzhu -- Sebastian, Aswathy -- Kramer, Melissa -- Spiegel, Lori -- Nascimento, Lidia -- Zutavern, Theresa -- Miller, Beth -- Ambroise, Claude -- Muller, Stephanie -- Spooner, Will -- Narechania, Apurva -- Ren, Liya -- Wei, Sharon -- Kumari, Sunita -- Faga, Ben -- Levy, Michael J -- McMahan, Linda -- Van Buren, Peter -- Vaughn, Matthew W -- Ying, Kai -- Yeh, Cheng-Ting -- Emrich, Scott J -- Jia, Yi -- Kalyanaraman, Ananth -- Hsia, An-Ping -- Barbazuk, W Brad -- Baucom, Regina S -- Brutnell, Thomas P -- Carpita, Nicholas C -- Chaparro, Cristian -- Chia, Jer-Ming -- Deragon, Jean-Marc -- Estill, James C -- Fu, Yan -- Jeddeloh, Jeffrey A -- Han, Yujun -- Lee, Hyeran -- Li, Pinghua -- Lisch, Damon R -- Liu, Sanzhen -- Liu, Zhijie -- Nagel, Dawn Holligan -- McCann, Maureen C -- SanMiguel, Phillip -- Myers, Alan M -- Nettleton, Dan -- Nguyen, John -- Penning, Bryan W -- Ponnala, Lalit -- Schneider, Kevin L -- Schwartz, David C -- Sharma, Anupma -- Soderlund, Carol -- Springer, Nathan M -- Sun, Qi -- Wang, Hao -- Waterman, Michael -- Westerman, Richard -- Wolfgruber, Thomas K -- Yang, Lixing -- Yu, Yeisoo -- Zhang, Lifang -- Zhou, Shiguo -- Zhu, Qihui -- Bennetzen, Jeffrey L -- Dawe, R Kelly -- Jiang, Jiming -- Jiang, Ning -- Presting, Gernot G -- Wessler, Susan R -- Aluru, Srinivas -- Martienssen, Robert A -- Clifton, Sandra W -- McCombie, W Richard -- Wing, Rod A -- Wilson, Richard K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2009 Nov 20;326(5956):1112-5. doi: 10.1126/science.1178534.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Center for Plant Genomics, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19965430" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: Pulsars are born with subsecond spin periods and slow by electromagnetic braking for several tens of millions of years, when detectable radiation ceases. A second life can occur for neutron stars in binary systems. They can acquire mass and angular momentum from their companions, to be spun up to millisecond periods and begin radiating again. We searched Fermi Large Area Telescope data for pulsations from all known millisecond pulsars (MSPs) outside of globular clusters, using rotation parameters from radio telescopes. Strong gamma-ray pulsations were detected for eight MSPs. The gamma-ray pulse profiles and spectral properties resemble those of young gamma-ray pulsars. The basic emission mechanism seems to be the same for MSPs and young pulsars, with the emission originating in regions far from the neutron star surface.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Abdo, A A -- Ackermann, M -- Ajello, M -- Atwood, W B -- Axelsson, M -- Baldini, L -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Baring, M G -- Bastieri, D -- Baughman, B M -- Bechtol, K -- Bellazzini, R -- Berenji, B -- Bignami, G F -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Bonamente, E -- Borgland, A W -- Bregeon, J -- Brez, A -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Burnett, T H -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Camilo, F -- Caraveo, P A -- Carlson, P -- Casandjian, J M -- Cecchi, C -- Celik, O -- Charles, E -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cognard, I -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- Cominsky, L R -- Conrad, J -- Corbet, R -- Cutini, S -- Dermer, C D -- Desvignes, G -- de Angelis, A -- de Luca, A -- de Palma, F -- Digel, S W -- Dormody, M -- do Couto e Silva, E -- Drell, P S -- Dubois, R -- Dumora, D -- Edmonds, Y -- Farnier, C -- Favuzzi, C -- Fegan, S J -- Focke, W B -- Frailis, M -- Freire, P C C -- Fukazawa, Y -- Funk, S -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Gasparrini, D -- Gehrels, N -- Germani, S -- Giebels, B -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Grondin, M H -- Grove, J E -- Guillemot, L -- Guiriec, S -- Hanabata, Y -- Harding, A K -- Hayashida, M -- Hays, E -- Hobbs, G -- Hughes, R E -- Johannesson, G -- Johnson, A S -- Johnson, R P -- Johnson, T J -- Johnson, W N -- Johnston, S -- Kamae, T -- Katagiri, H -- Kataoka, J -- Kawai, N -- Kerr, M -- Knodlseder, J -- Kocian, M L -- Kramer, M -- Kuss, M -- Lande, J -- Latronico, L -- Lemoine-Goumard, M -- Longo, F -- Loparco, F -- Lott, B -- Lovellette, M N -- Lubrano, P -- Madejski, G M -- Makeev, A -- Manchester, R N -- Marelli, M -- Mazziotta, M N -- McConville, W -- McEnery, J E -- McLaughlin, M A -- Meurer, C -- Michelson, P F -- Mitthumsiri, W -- Mizuno, T -- Moiseev, A A -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Nolan, P L -- Norris, J P -- Nuss, E -- Ohsugi, T -- Omodei, N -- Orlando, E -- Ormes, J F -- Paneque, D -- Panetta, J H -- Parent, D -- Pelassa, V -- Pepe, M -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Piron, F -- Porter, T A -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Ransom, S M -- Ray, P S -- Razzano, M -- Rea, N -- Reimer, A -- Reimer, O -- Reposeur, T -- Ritz, S -- Rochester, L S -- Rodriguez, A Y -- Romani, R W -- Roth, M -- Ryde, F -- Sadrozinski, H F W -- Sanchez, D -- Sander, A -- Saz Parkinson, P M -- Scargle, J D -- Schalk, T L -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Smith, D A -- Smith, P D -- Spandre, G -- Spinelli, P -- Stappers, B W -- Starck, J L -- Striani, E -- Strickman, M S -- Suson, D J -- Tajima, H -- Takahashi, H -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J B -- Thayer, J G -- Theureau, G -- Thompson, D J -- Thorsett, S E -- Tibaldo, L -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Tramacere, A -- Uchiyama, Y -- Usher, T L -- Van Etten, A -- Vasileiou, V -- Venter, C -- Vilchez, N -- Vitale, V -- Waite, A P -- Wallace, E -- Wang, P -- Watters, K -- Webb, N -- Weltevrede, P -- Winer, B L -- Wood, K S -- Ylinen, T -- Ziegler, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2009 Aug 14;325(5942):848-52. doi: 10.1126/science.1176113.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Space Science Division, Naval Research Laboratory,Washington, DC 20375, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19574349" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: The accretion of matter onto a massive black hole is believed to feed the relativistic plasma jets found in many active galactic nuclei (AGN). Although some AGN accelerate particles to energies exceeding 10(12) electron volts and are bright sources of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, it is not yet known where the VHE emission originates. Here we report on radio and VHE observations of the radio galaxy Messier 87, revealing a period of extremely strong VHE gamma-ray flares accompanied by a strong increase of the radio flux from its nucleus. These results imply that charged particles are accelerated to very high energies in the immediate vicinity of the black hole.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉VERITAS Collaboration -- VLBA 43 GHz M87 Monitoring Team -- H.E.S.S. Description: The atomic nucleus is composed of two different kinds of fermions: protons and neutrons. If the protons and neutrons did not interact, the Pauli exclusion principle would force the majority of fermions (usually neutrons) to have a higher average momentum. Our high-energy electron-scattering measurements using (12)C, (27)Al, (56)Fe, and (208)Pb targets show that even in heavy, neutron-rich nuclei, short-range interactions between the fermions form correlated high-momentum neutron-proton pairs. Thus, in neutron-rich nuclei, protons have a greater probability than neutrons to have momentum greater than the Fermi momentum. This finding has implications ranging from nuclear few-body systems to neutron stars and may also be observable experimentally in two-spin-state, ultracold atomic gas systems.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hen, O -- Sargsian, M -- Weinstein, L B -- Piasetzky, E -- Hakobyan, H -- Higinbotham, D W -- Braverman, M -- Brooks, W K -- Gilad, S -- Adhikari, K P -- Arrington, J -- Asryan, G -- Avakian, H -- Ball, J -- Baltzell, N A -- Battaglieri, M -- Beck, A -- May-Tal Beck, S -- Bedlinskiy, I -- Bertozzi, W -- Biselli, A -- Burkert, V D -- Cao, T -- Carman, D S -- Celentano, A -- Chandavar, S -- Colaneri, L -- Cole, P L -- Crede, V -- D'Angelo, A -- De Vita, R -- Deur, A -- Djalali, C -- Doughty, D -- Dugger, M -- Dupre, R -- Egiyan, H -- El Alaoui, A -- El Fassi, L -- Elouadrhiri, L -- Fedotov, G -- Fegan, S -- Forest, T -- Garillon, B -- Garcon, M -- Gevorgyan, N -- Ghandilyan, Y -- Gilfoyle, G P -- Girod, F X -- Goetz, J T -- Gothe, R W -- Griffioen, K A -- Guidal, M -- Guo, L -- Hafidi, K -- Hanretty, C -- Hattawy, M -- Hicks, K -- Holtrop, M -- Hyde, C E -- Ilieva, Y -- Ireland, D G -- Ishkanov, B I -- Isupov, E L -- Jiang, H -- Jo, H S -- Joo, K -- Keller, D -- Khandaker, M -- Kim, A -- Kim, W -- Klein, F J -- Koirala, S -- Korover, I -- Kuhn, S E -- Kubarovsky, V -- Lenisa, P -- Levine, W I -- Livingston, K -- Lowry, M -- Lu, H Y -- MacGregor, I J D -- Markov, N -- Mayer, M -- McKinnon, B -- Mineeva, T -- Mokeev, V -- Movsisyan, A -- Munoz Camacho, C -- Mustapha, B -- Nadel-Turonski, P -- Niccolai, S -- Niculescu, G -- Niculescu, I -- Osipenko, M -- Pappalardo, L L -- Paremuzyan, R -- Park, K -- Pasyuk, E -- Phelps, W -- Pisano, S -- Pogorelko, O -- Price, J W -- Procureur, S -- Prok, Y -- Protopopescu, D -- Puckett, A J R -- Rimal, D -- Ripani, M -- Ritchie, B G -- Rizzo, A -- Rosner, G -- Roy, P -- Rossi, P -- Sabatie, F -- Schott, D -- Schumacher, R A -- Sharabian, Y G -- Smith, G D -- Shneor, R -- Sokhan, D -- Stepanyan, S S -- Stepanyan, S -- Stoler, P -- Strauch, S -- Sytnik, V -- Taiuti, M -- Tkachenko, S -- Ungaro, M -- Vlassov, A V -- Voutier, E -- Walford, N K -- Wei, X -- Wood, M H -- Wood, S A -- Zachariou, N -- Zana, L -- Zhao, Z W -- Zheng, X -- Zonta, I -- Jefferson Lab CLAS Collaboration -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Oct 31;346(6209):614-7. doi: 10.1126/science.1256785.
