    Description: Neutral, volatile polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) were determined in high-volume air samples collected onboard the German research vessel Polarstern during cruise ANT-XXIII/1 between Bremerhaven, Germany (53° N) and Capetown, Republic of South Africa (33° S) in fall 2005. An optimized and validated analytical protocol was used for the determination of several fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) as well as N-alkylated fluorooctane sulfonamides and sulfonamidoethanols (FOSAs/FOSEs). Quantitative analyses were done by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This study provides the first concentration data of airborne PFAS from the Southern Hemisphere. Results indicate a strongly decreasing concentration gradient from the European continent toward less industrialized regions. The study confirms that airborne PFAS are mainly restricted to the Northern Hemisphere with a maximum concentration of 190 pg/m**3 (8:2 FTOH) in the first sample collected in the channel between the European mainland and the UK. However, south of the equator, trace amounts of several FTOHs and FOSAs with a maximum of 14 pg/m**3 (8:2 FTOH) could still be detected. Furthermore, a selection of ionic PFAS including perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) were determined in the particulate phase of high-volume air samples by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Levels of ionic PFAS were almost 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of neutral PFAS, with maximum concentrations in the first sample of 2.5 pg/m**3 (PFOS) and 2.0 pg/m**3 (PFOA).

    Description: Stable isotope records, and sedimentological and organic-geochemical investigations of marine sediments from the east Greenland Sea at 70°N provide important information about glacial-interglacial variations of paleoenvironments through the last 225 kyr. The oxygen isotope records established on the planktonic foraminifer N. pachyderma sin. show some excursions from the global climate pattern, probably due to local/regional overprint by meltwater supply. The cold, low-saline East Greenland Current and fluctuations in sea-ice covering were a crucial element controlling the carbonate production in the subsurface/surface water column in the east Greenland Sea over the last 225 kyr. The beginning of Termination Ia is AMS 14C dated at about 15.8 kyr B.P. and interpreted as a Greenland Ice Sheet meltwater signal. The stage 2/3 boundary is dated at about 25 kyr B.P. The timing of the onset of the last deglacial meltwater event is about 800 years earlier than that of the Barents Shelf Ice Sheet meltwater signal recorded in the Fram Strait. Several major pulses of increased supply of coarse-grained terrigenous material by glacio-marine processes occurred during the last 225 kyr. The supply of coarse-grained ice-rafted debris at the East Greenland continental slope reached maximum values during the last glacial maximum (stage 2/Weichselian, 15-19 kyr B.P.). The drastic climatic change and the gradual retreat of continental ice masses/glaciers during the last deglaciation (Termination I) are clearly documented in the marine sedimentary sequences from shelf and upper slope environments. This process resulted in distinctly decreased supply and deposition of ice-rafted debris in the open shelf-upper slope environments. During Termination I, the sea-ice cover also decreased, causing an increase in surface-water productivity, indicated by increased organic carbon and biogenic opal deposition.

The glaciomarine sediments recovered from the heavily ice-covered East Greenland continental margin reflect changes associated with the glacial/interglacial climatic cycles of the last 240 ka. The glaciomarine sediments are characterised by a dominance of terrestrially derived components and a lower content of biogenic components. Glaciomarine sedimentation processes, terrigenous sediment input, and biogenic productivity in the study area are strongly influenced by fluctuations in the extent of the Greenland Ice Sheet, extent of the sea-ice cover, rate of iceberg drifting, meltwater input, and changes in the East Greenland Current (EGC). The relatively low carbonate content (〈10 %) and the dominant occurrence of N. pachyderma sin. (〉95 %) throughout the sediment sequences indicate a low biological productivity in the surface water resulting from the extensive sea-ice cover and the strong influence of cold and low-saline polar waters of the EGC. An increase in the surface-water productivity, on the other hand, occurred during certain periods within interglacial and glacial stages. This indicates that the sea ice along the Western margin of the Greenland Sea was at least seasonally reduced during these time intetvals. Based on the accumulation rates of the coarse terrigenous matter (〉63 µm) and amounts of IRD, the advance and retreat of East Greenland glaciers over the past 200 ka can be correlated with those postulated from the terrestrial records. At least five repeated advances and retreats of glaciers beyond the coastline are proposed between the late Early to Middle Weichselian (65-61, 59-51, 48-42, 35-31, and 28-25 ka). Maximum fluxes of IRD recorded along the continental margin between 21 and 16 ka, reflect the maximum extent of East Greenland glaciers probably reaching the shelf break at that time. The stable oxygen isotope records measured on the planktonic foraminifer N. pachyderma sin. reveal some excursions from the global climate record due to a local andlor regional overprint through meltwater supply andlor cold water masses of the EGC. Distinct meltwater events are documented during Terminations II and l and at the beginning of Stage 3 resulting from the collapse of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The early period of all glacial stages (i.e. 716, 514, and 312) was subjected to an abrupt and rapid build-up of a sea-ice cover. Hence, a distinct decrease in the carbonate content, the low number of planktonic foraminifers, and light d13C values reflect the strong reduction in the C02 exchange between the atmosphere and ocean, and the surface-water productivity, resulting from a meltwater cap andlor an extensive sea-ice cover. The onset of Termination l is characterised by a distinct shift towards light d180 values, a dramatic decrease in the IRD-flux, and a marked increase in organic matter, indicating the rapid retreat of East Greenland glaciers and a reduced sea-ice cover. According to distinct shifts toward light d180 and heavy d13C values of N. pachyderma sin. and O. umbonatus, the present-day circulation Patterns of surface- and deep-water masses were probably established between 7.4 and 6.1 ka. This is very similar to the timing estimated from studies On microfossil assemblages of the Greenland Sea. In particular, the distinct IRD peaks correlate with the fluctuations of the Greenland Ice Sheet during the last two glacial-interglacial cycles. Most of the major IRD peaks correspond to periods of cooling of air temperatures over Greenland. During the interval between 225 and 60 ka, the IRD peaks are in phase (at the 23-kyr orbital processional cycle) with maximum Summer Insolation at 70°N This suggests that the Greenland Ice Sheet may have experienced a predominantly 23-kyr cycle of growth and decay, and therefore, collapsed and discharged large volumes of icebergs to the Greenland Sea when Summer insolation reached its maxima. During the last glacial period, there is a strong correlation between major pulses in the supply of IRD, and the Bond Cycles and the Heinrich Events recorded in the GRIP ice core and North Atlantic deep-sea sediments. Furthermore, the higher frequency of IRD events on millennial scales matches the cooling phase of the abrupt Dansgaard-Oeschger Cycles recorded in the GRIP ice core. Consequently, the apparent evidence of millennial scale IRD events in the North Atlantic and the GIN Sea suggests coherent fluctuations of the large northern hemisphere ice sheets (i.e. the Fennoscandian/Barents Sea and Laurentide/Greenland ice sheets) during the last glacial period.

    Description: Coastal zones of the Humboldt Current Upwelling System (HCUS) are composed both of rocky and sandy beaches inhabited by macrozoobenthic communities. These show oscillating changes in the dominance of species; the abundance of the sand crab Emerita analoga is linked to phases of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The biogenic surfaces of these crabs serve as substrate for opportunistic colonizers. This study is the first record of an epibiosis between E. analoga and the rock mussel Semimytilus algosus, detected at a southern Peruvian sandy beach. Mussels fouled a wide size-range of adult E. analoga (7.3%) but they themselves belonged to small-size classes. The largest S. algosus was 17.4 mm in length. Highest permanence of epibionts was found on larger sand crabs (maximum between 24 and 27 mm). Significantly more mussels were found on the ventral surface (39.4%) compared to 10 other surface areas of the sand crab. Possible benefits and disadvantages of the observed epibiosis for both the basibiont and the epibiont are discussed.

    Description: Holocene climate variability is investigated in the North Pacific and North Atlantic realms, using alkenone-derived sea-surface temperature (SST) records as well as a millennial scale simulation with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM). The alkenone SST data indicate a temperature increase over almost the entire North Pacific from 7 cal kyr BP to the present. A dipole pattern with a continuous cooling in the northeastern Atlantic and a warming in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and the northern Red Sea is detected in the North Atlantic realm. Similarly, SST variations are opposite in sign between the northeastern Pacific and the northeastern Atlantic. A 2300 year long AOGCM climate simulation reveals a similar SST seesaw between the northeastern Pacific and the northeastern Atlantic on centennial time scales. Our analysis of the alkenone SST data and the model results suggests fundamental inter-oceanic teleconnections during the Holocene.

    Description: High-resolution stable oxygen and carbon isotope and sedimentological investigations were carried out on four west-east profils at the East Greenland continental margin between 68° and 75°. The sediment cores represent distinct flacial/interglacial palaeoclimatic episodes over the past 190 ka. Based on oxygen isotope stratigraphy and AMS 14C dating, our data can be well correlated with the global climate record. However, there are some excursions from the global climate curve suggesting a local/regional overprint by meltwater events of the Greenland Ice Sheet, especially at the beginning of isotope stage 3 and during Termination I. Distinct high-amplitude variations in supply of ice-rafted debris (IRD) indicate repeated advances and retreats of the Greenland Ice Sheet, causing fluctiations in the massive production and transport of icebergs into the Greenland Sea. During the last 190 ka, a number of IRD peaks appear to be correlated with cooling cycles observed in the GRIP Greenland Ice Core. Drastic events in iceberg discharge along the East Greenland continental margin recurred at very short intervals of 100-300 years (i.e. much more frequently than the about 10 000 years associated with Heinrich events), suggesting short-term collapses of the Greenland Ice Sheet on these time-scales. These late Weichselian Greenland Ice Sheet oscillations appear to be in phase with those in the Barents Sea area. Maximum flux rates of terrigenous (ice-rafted) material were recorded at the continental slope between about 21 and 16 ka, which may correspond to the maximum (stage 2) extension of glaciers on Greenland. The beginning ot Termination I is documented by a distinct shift in the oxygen isotopes and a most prominent decrease in flux of IRD at the continental slope caused by the retreat of continental ice masses.

    Description: Gneissic granodiorite was recovered by drilling at the base of the Mazagan escarpment, 100 km west of the Casablanca, Morocco, at 4000 m water depth. Coarse, predeformative muscovite yielded dates of -515 Ma, fine-grained muscovite of -455 Ma, biotite -360 and 335 Ma, and feldspar -315 Ma. These dates are tentatively correlated with the microscopic results. We assume a minimum age of middle Cambrian for the granodiorite, an Ordovician deformation and mylonitization, and a Late Carboniferous overprint under upper greenschist facies conditions.

    Description: We present a record of extreme spring-summer runoff events for the past 1600 yr preserved in the varved sediments of Lake Mondsee (Austrian Pre-Alps). Combined sediment microfacies analyses and high-resolution micro-X-ray fluorescence element scanning allow us to identify 157 detrital event layers deposited in spring-summer and to discriminate between regional flood and local debris flow deposits. Higher spring-summer flood activity with a mean event recurrence of 3-5 yr occurred in several well-confined multidecadal episodes during the Dark Ages Cold Period and Medieval time (A.D. 450-480, 590-640, 700-750, and 1140-1170) as well as during the early Little Ice Age (LIA; A.D. 1300-1330 and 1480-1520). In contrast, lowest spring-summer flood activity with an event recurrence of only 30-100 yr is observed during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (A.D. 1180-1300) and the coldest interval of the LIA (A.D. 1600-1700). These findings indicate a complex relationship between temperature conditions and extreme hydro-meteorological events and suggest that enhanced summer Mediterranean cyclogenesis triggers large-scale floods in the northeast Alps during climatic transitions. The Lake Mondsee data demonstrate the climatic sensitivity of spring-summer floods and prove the potential of varved sediment records to investigate the impact of changing climate boundary conditions on seasonal flood activity for pre-instrumental time.

    Description: The purpose of the present study was to explore the composition and variation of the pico-, nano- and micro-plankton communities in Norwegian coastal waters and Skagerrak, and the co-occurrence of bacteria and viruses. Samples were collected along three cruise transects from Jaeren, Lista and Oksoy on the south coast of Norway and into the North Sea and Skagerrak. We also followed a drifting buoy for 55 h in Skagerrak in order to observe diel variations. Satellite ocean color images (SeaWiFS) of the chlorophyll a (chl a) distribution compared favorably to in situ measurements in open waters, while closer to the shore remote sensing chl a data was overestimated compared to the in situ data. Using light microscopy, we identified 49 micro- and 15 nanoplankton sized phototrophic forms as well as 40 micro- and 12 nanoplankton sized heterotrophic forms. The only picoeukaryote (0.2-2.0 µm) we identified was Resultor micron (Pedinophyceae). Along the transects a significant variation in the distribution and abundance of different plankton forms were observed, with Synechococcus spp and autotrophic picoeukaryotes as the most notable examples. There was no correlation between viruses and chl a, but between viruses and bacteria, and between viruses and some of the phytoplankton groups, especially the picoeukaryotes. Moreover, there was a negative correlation between nutrients and small viruses (Low Fluorescent Viruses) but a positive correlation between nutrients and large viruses (High Fluorescent Viruses). The abundance of autotrophic picoplankton, bacteria and viruses showed a diel variation in surface waters with higher values around noon and late at night and lower values in the evening. Synechococcus spp were found at 20 m depth 25-45 nautical miles from shore apparently forming a bloom that stretched out for more than 100 nautical miles from Skagerrak and up the south west coast of Norway. The different methods used for assessing abundance, distribution and diversity of microorganisms yielded complementary information about the plankton community. Flow cytometry enabled us to map the distribution of the smaller phytoplankton forms, bacteria and viruses in more detail than has been possible before but detection and quantification of specific forms (genus or species) still requires taxonomic skills, molecular analysis or both.

    Description: During the Pleistocene glaciations, Arctic ice sheets on western Eurasia, Greenland and North America terminated at their continental margins. In contrast, the exposed continental shelves in the Beringian region of Siberia are thought to have been covered by a tundra landscape. Evidence of grounded ice on seafloor ridges and plateaux off the coast of the Beringian margin, at depths of up to 1,000 m, have generally been attributed to ice shelves or giant icebergs that spread oceanwards during glacial maxima. Here we identify marine glaciogenic landforms visible in seismic profiles and detailed bathymetric maps along the East Siberian continental margin. We interpret these features, which occur in present water depths of up to 1,200 m, as traces from grounding events of ice sheets and ice shelves. We conclude that the Siberian Shelf edge and parts of the Arctic Ocean were covered by ice sheets of about 1 km in thickness during several Pleistocene glaciations before the most recent glacial period, which must have had a significant influence on albedo and oceanic and atmospheric circulation.

    Description: The freshwater budget of the Arctic Ocean is a key component governing the deep water formation in the North Atlantic and the global climate system. We analyzed the isotopic composition of neodymium (epsilon-Nd) in authigenic phases of marine sediments on the Mendeleev Ridge in the western Arctic Ocean spanning an estimated time interval from present to about 75 ka BP. This continuous record was used to reconstruct the epsilon-Nd of the polar deep water (PDW) and changes in freshwater sources to the PDW through time. Three deviations in epsilon-Nd from a long term average of -10.2 were identified at estimated 46-51, 35-39 and 13-21 ka BP. The estimated 46-51 ka BP event can be traced to bursting of ice-dammed lakes accompanying the collapse of the Barents-Kara Ice Sheet, which would have released radiogenic Nd to the eastern Arctic Ocean. The cyclonic surface circulation in the eastern Arctic Ocean must have been stronger than at present for the event to be recorded on the Mendeleev Ridge. For the 35-39 and 13-21 ka BP events, it is likely that the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) supplied the unradiogenic freshwater. The configuration of the anticyclonic circulation in the western Arctic was probably similar to today or expanded eastward. Our simple mass balance calculations suggest that large amounts of freshwater were released but due to significant deep water formation within the Arctic Ocean, the effect on the formation of NADW was probably minor.

    Description: During summer 2008, as part of the Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study, we measured phytoplankton photosynthetic parameters to understand regional patterns in primary productivity, including the degree and timescale of photoacclimation and how variability in environmental conditions influences this response. Photosynthesis-irradiance measurements were taken at 15 sites primarily from the depth of the subsurface chlorophyll a (Chl a) maximum (SCM) within the Beaufort Sea flaw lead polynya. The physiological response of phytoplankton to a range of light levels was used to assess maximum rates of carbon (C) fixation (P*m), photosynthetic efficiency (alpha*), photoacclimation (Ek), and photoinhibition (beta*). SCM samples taken along a transect from under ice into open water exhibited a 〉3-fold increase in alpha* and P*m, showing these parameters can vary substantially over relatively small spatial scales, primarily in response to changes in the ambient light field. Algae were able to maintain relatively high rates of C fixation despite low light at the SCM, particularly in the large (〉5 µm) size fraction at open water sites. This may substantially impact biogenic C drawdown if species composition shifts in response to future climate change. Our results suggest that phytoplankton in this region are well acclimated to existing environmental conditions, including sea ice cover, low light, and nutrient pulses. Furthermore, this photoacclimatory response can be rapid and keep pace with a developing SCM, as phytoplankton maintain photosynthetic rates and efficiencies in a narrow ''shade-acclimated'' range.

    Description: We determined d18OCib values of live (Rose Bengal stained) and dead epibenthic foraminifera Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, Cibicides lobatulus, and Cibicides refulgens in surface sediment samples from the Arctic Ocean and the Greenland, Iceland, and Norwegian seas (Nordic Sea). This is the first time that a comprehensive d18OCib data set is generated and compiled from the Arctic Ocean. For comparison, we defined Atlantic Water (AW), upper Arctic Bottom Water (uABW), and Arctic Bottom Water (ABW) by their temperature/salinity characteristics and calculated mean equilibrium calcite d18Oequ from summer sea-water d18Ow and in situ temperatures. As a result, in the Arctic environment we compensate for Cibicidoides- and Cibicides-specific offsets from equilibrium calcite of -0.35 and -0.55 per mil, respectively. After this taxon-specific adjustment, mean d18OCib values plausibly reflect the density stratification of principle water masses in the Nordic Sea and Arctic Ocean. In addition, mean d18OCib from AW not only significantly differs from mean d18OCib from ABW, but also d18OCib from within AW differentiates in function of provenience and water mass age. Furthermore, in shallow waters brine-derived low d18Ow can significantly lower the d18OCib of Cibicides spp. and thus d18OCib may serve as a paleobrine indicator. There is no statistically significant difference, however, between deeper water masses mean d18OCib of the Nordic Sea, and of the Eurasian and Amerasian basins, and no influence of low-d18Ow brines is recorded in Recent uABW and ABW d18OCib of C. wuellerstorfi. This may be due to dilution of a low-d18Ow brine signal in the deep sea, and/or to preferential incorporation of relatively high-d18Ow brines from high-salinity shelves. Although our data encompass environments with seasonal sea-ice and brine formation supposed to ultimately ventilate the deep Arctic Ocean, d18OCib from uABW and ABW do not indicate negative excursions. This may challenge hypotheses that call for enhanced Arctic brine release to explain negative benthic d18O spikes in deep-sea sediments from the late Pleistocene North Atlantic Ocean.

    Description: The effects of changing ice and atmospheric conditions on the upwelling of deep nutrient-laden waters and biological productivity in the coastal Beaufort Sea were quantified using a unique combination of in situ and remote-sensing approaches. Repeated instances of ice ablation and upwelling during fall 2007 and summer 2008 multiplied the production of ice algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos by 2 to 6 fold.     Description: In this study, we present new detailed biomarker-based sea ice records from two sediment cores recovered in the Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. These new biomarker data may provide new insights on processes controlling recent and past sea ice changes. The biomarker proxy records show (i) minimum sea ice extent during the Early Holocene, (ii) a prominent Mid-Holocene short-term high-amplitude variability in sea ice, primary production and Pacific-Water inflow, and (iii) significantly increased sea ice extent during the last ca. 4.5k cal a BP. This Late Holocene trend in sea ice change in the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas seems to be contemporaneous with similar changes in sea ice extent recorded from other Arctic marginal seas. The main factors controlling the millennial variability in sea ice (and surface-water productivity) are probably changes in surface water and heat flow from the Pacific into the Arctic Ocean as well as the long-term decrease in summer insolation. The short-term centennial variability observed in the high-resolution Middle Holocene record is probably related to solar forcing. Our new data on Holocene sea ice variability may contribute to synoptic reconstructions of regional to global Holocene climate change based on terrestrial and marine archives.

    Description: About 50 Gt of carbon is fixed photosynthetically by surface ocean phytoplankton communities every year. Part of this organic matter is reprocessed within the plankton community to form aggregates which eventually sink and export carbon into the deep ocean. The fraction of organic matter leaving the surface ocean is partly dependent on aggregate sinking velocity which accelerates with increasing aggregate size and density, where the latter is controlled by ballast load and aggregate porosity. In May 2011, we moored nine 25 m deep mesocosms in a Norwegian fjord to assess on a daily basis how plankton community structure affects material properties and sinking velocities of aggregates (Ø 80–400 µm) collected in the mesocosms' sediment traps. We noted that sinking velocity was not necessarily accelerated by opal ballast during diatom blooms, which could be due to relatively high porosity of these rather fresh aggregates. Furthermore, estimated aggregate porosity (Pestimated) decreased as the picoautotroph (0.2–2 µm) fraction of the phytoplankton biomass increased. Thus, picoautotroph‐dominated communities may be indicative for food webs promoting a high degree of aggregate repackaging with potential for accelerated sinking. Blooms of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi revealed that cell concentrations of ~1500 cells/mL accelerate sinking by about 35–40%, which we estimate (by one‐dimensional modeling) to elevate organic matter transfer efficiency through the mesopelagic from 14 to 24%. Our results indicate that sinking velocities are influenced by the complex interplay between the availability of ballast minerals and aggregate packaging; both of which are controlled by plankton community structure.

    Description: This database provides measurements on 87Sr/86Sr, d13C from samples of Oman Drilling Project Hole BT1B. The database includes listvenites (n=50), serpentinites (n=14), metamorphic sole rocks (n=11). The sample names and grouping by Units were determined on-board D/V Chikyu from macroscopic observations (Visual Core Description; Kelemen et al. [2020]). Rb and Sr concentrations were determined using a Quadrupole Inductively-Coupled-Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (Q-ICP-MS) at the University of Montpellier (France) and were originally reported by Godard et al. (2021). 87Sr/86Sr were analyzed for interspersed with US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) SRM 987 on a Thermo Scientific Neptune multi-collector ICP-MS at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (United States). Total Carbon (TC) was measured from the same bulk rock powder splits as for Strontium isotopes. Total Organic Carbon (TOC, or reduced carbon) was measured from the residual rock powder after the removal of Inorganic Carbon (carbonate carbon) through reaction with dilute (3 N) HCl for at least 3 days, followed by washing with Millipore® water.     Description: Sediments and rocks recovered in CRP-3 coring operations contain minute amounts of organic matter (average 0.3% TOC). TOC contents and C:N ratios are zoned systematically: those rocks encountered at depths greater than 330 meters below sea floor (mbsf) contain less organic matter and have higher TOC:N ratios (after correcting for inorganic N) than do shallower rocks. The only two samples that have TOC values greater than 1% also contain abundant granule to silt-sized particles of coal. The total sulphur contents of these rocks is very low and indicates either that only small amounts of deposited organic matter were labile, or that no source of reactive iron was present during diagenesis.

    Description: The particulate export of photosynthetically fixed carbon from the surface ocean to the ocean interior is a key component of the biological carbon pump and, by extension, of the global carbon cycle. An extensively applied method to estimate the downward flux of particulate carbon is the ²³⁴Th technique, which uses the deficit of ²³⁴Th with respect to its parent, ²³⁸U, coupled with the C/²³⁴Th ratios measured in sinking. More than two decades have passed since the ²³⁴Th technique was first applied to determine the export flux of particulate carbon but the C/²³⁴Th ratio on sinking particles remains as one of the principal uncertainties of this approach. Here we present a global database of 9110 C/²³⁴Th ratios collected using in situ pumps, sediment traps and bottles. Ratios have been grouped, based on the particle size or the device used for the sampling, as: i) Large particles ii) Small particles, iii) Sediment traps and iv) Bulk. The samples were collected between 1989 and 2016 and are distributed among most of the open ocean Longhurst provinces, with some coastal areas also represented. As expected, the data are not evenly distributed along the water column, with most of the data points found in the upper 100-200 m, although the depth range expands from surface down to 〉5500 m. Globally, the ratios range from 0.012 to 1778 µmol/dpm. This database shows how particulate C/²³⁴Th ratios vary with time, depth, particle size and location, which is important for the application of the ²³⁴Th approach and the estimate of the global magnitude of the biological carbon pump.

    Description: Samples of Quaternary through Miocene diatomaceous sediment and siliceous sedimentary rock from the Japan Sea (ODP Leg 128, Site 799) were examined to determine the origin of bitumen encountered during drilling, whether previously published studies using Rock-Eval pyrolysis have accurately assessed organic matter type and maturity, and if evidence exists to postulate the presence of a Kuroko-type massive sulfide deposit at depth or along depositional strike. Whole-rock total organic carbon:total nitrogen ratios have values ranging from 31 to 4. Elemental atomic H:C and O:C kerogen ratios decrease from ca 1.3 and 0.3, respectively, in Quaternary and Pliocene samples to 1.2 and 0.1, respectively, in samples obtained from the bottom of the hole. The bitumen ratio of these rocks increases from 50 mg bitumen/g OC at 700 mbsf to 150 mg bitumen/g at 1000 mbsf. The kerogen in these samples comprises a mixture of marine and terrigenous organic material that reaches the earliest stages of catagenesis in the bottom part of this hole. The bitumen is dominated by asphaltenes, resins and polar components. Because these compounds have very high boiling points, Rock-Eval pyrolysis does not assess the thermal maturity, or organic matter type accurately in the early stages of catagenesis. The bitumens have a very low thermal maturity and the observed degree of thermal alteration is consistent with the modern geothermal gradient in the Kita-Yamato trough.

    Description: The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) was a global survey of ocean ecosystems aboard the Sailing Vessel Tara. It carried out extensive measurements of evironmental conditions and collected plankton (viruses, bacteria, protists and metazoans) for later analysis using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set includes properties of seawater, particulate matter and dissolved matter that were measured from discrete water samples collected with Niskin bottles during the 2009-2013 Tara Oceans expedition. Properties include pigment concentrations from HPLC analysis (10 depths per vertical profile, 25 pigments per depth), the carbonate system (Surface and 400m; pH (total scale), CO2, pCO2, fCO2, HCO3, CO3, Total alkalinity, Total carbon, OmegaAragonite, OmegaCalcite, and dosage Flags), nutrients (10 depths per vertical profile; NO2, PO4, N02/NO3, SI, quality Flags), DOC, CDOM, and dissolved oxygen isotopes.     Description: The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) was a global survey of ocean ecosystems aboard the Sailing Vessel Tara. It carried out extensive measurements of evironmental conditions and collected plankton (viruses, bacteria, protists and metazoans) for later analysis using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set includes properties of seawater, particulate matter and dissolved matter that were measured from discrete water samples collected with Niskin bottles during the 2009-2013 Tara Oceans expedition. Properties include pigment concentrations from HPLC analysis (10 depths per vertical profile, 25 pigments per depth), the carbonate system (Surface and 400m; pH (total scale), CO2, pCO2, fCO2, HCO3, CO3, Total alkalinity, Total carbon, OmegaAragonite, OmegaCalcite, and dosage Flags), nutrients (10 depths per vertical profile; NO2, PO4, N02/NO3, SI, quality Flags), DOC, CDOM, and dissolved oxygen isotopes. The Service National d'Analyse des Paramètres Océaniques du CO2, at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, determined CT and AT potentiometrically. More than 200 vertical profiles of these properties were made across the world ocean. DOC, CDOM and dissolved oxygen isotopes are available only for the Arctic Ocean and Arctic Seas (2013).
