    Notes: Abstract The stability of time-varying autoregressive (AR) models is an important issue in such applications as time-varying spectrum estimation and electroencephalography simulation and estimation. In some cases, such as time-varying spectrum estimation, the models that exhibit roots near unit moduli are difficult to use. Thus a tighter stability condition such as stability with a positive margin is needed. A time-varying AR model is stable with a positive margin if the moduli of the roots of the time-varying characteristic polynomial are somewhat less than unity for every time instant. Recently, a new method for the estimation of the time-varying AR models was introduced. This method is based on the interpretation of the underdetermined time-varying prediction equations as an ill-posed inverse problem that is solved by Tikhonov regularization. The method is referred to as the deterministic regression smoothness priors (DRSP) scheme. In this paper, a stabilization method in which the DRSP scheme is augmented with nonlinear stability constrainst is proposed. The problem is formulated so that stability with a positive margin can also be achieved. The problem is solved iteratively with an exterior point algorithm. The performance of the algorithm is studied with a simulation. It is shown that the proposed approach is well suited to stable modeling of signals containing narrowband transitions.

    Notes: Abstract This work presents a specific stock-effort dynamical model. The stocks correspond to two populations of fish moving and growing between two fishery zones. They are harvested by two different fleets. The effort represents the number of fishing boats of the two fleets that operate in the two fishing zones. The bioeconomical model is a set of four ODE's governing the fishing efforts and the stocks in the two fishing areas. Furthermore, the migration of the fish between the two patches is assumed to be faster than the growth of the harvested stock. The displacement of the fleets is also faster than the variation in the number of fishing boats resulting from the investment of the fishing income. So, there are two time scales: a fast one corresponding to the migration between the two patches, and a slow time scale corresponding to growth. We use aggregation methods that allow us to reduce the dimension of the model and to obtain an aggregated model for the total fishing effort and fish stock of the two fishing zones. The mathematical analysis of the model is shown. Under some conditions, we obtain a stable equilibrium, which is a desired situation, as it leads to a sustainable harvesting equilibrium, keeping the stock at exploitable densities.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the slotted ALOHA protocol on a channel with a capture effect. There are M 〈 ∞ users each with an infinite buffer. If in a slot, i packets are transmitted, then the probability of a successful reception of a packet is q i. This model contains the CDMA protocols as special cases. We obtain sufficient rate conditions, which are close to necessary for stability of the system, when the arrival streams are stationary ergodic. Under the same rate conditions, for general regenerative arrival streams, we obtain the rates of convergence to stationarity, finiteness of stationary moments and various functional limit theorems. Our arrival streams contain all the traffic models suggested in the recent literature, including the ones which display long range dependence. We also obtain bounds on the stationary moments of waiting times which can be tight under realistic conditions. Finally, we obtain several results on the transient performance of the system, e.g., first time to overflow and the limits of the overflow process. We also extend the above results to the case of a capture channel exhibiting Markov modulated fading. Most of our results and proofs will be shown to hold also for the slotted ALOHA protocol without capture.

    Notes: Abstract We consider a model of spin-orbit interaction, describing the motion of an oblate satellite rotating about an internal spin-axis and orbiting about a central planet. The resulting second order differential equation depends upon the parameters provided by the equatorial oblateness of the satellite and its orbital eccentricity. Normal form transformations around the main spin-orbit resonances are carried out explicitly. As an outcome, one can compute some invariants; the fact that these quantities are not identically zero is a necessary condition to prove the existence of nearby periodic orbits (Birkhoff fixed point theorem). Moreover, the nonvanishing of the invariants provides also the stability of the spin-orbit resonances, since it guarantees the existence of invariant curves surrounding the periodic orbit.

    Notes: Abstract We consider a four-class two-station network with feedback, with fluid inputs and a head-of-the-line generalized processor sharing discipline at each station. We derive the Skorokhod Problem associated with the network and obtain algebraic sufficient conditions for Lipschitz continuity of the associated Skorokhod Map. This provides the first example of a multiclass network with feedback for which the associated Skorokhod Problem has been proved to be regular. As an elementary application, we show that under the conditions which guarantee Lipschitz continuity the network is stable if and only if the usual load conditions apply.

    Notes: Abstract Well‐characterized catalyst model compounds of KAlO2 and KFeO2 are investigated by thermal desorption of potassium from the material. The desorbing fluxes of ions, atoms and highly excited states (field ionizable Rydberg states) were studied with surface and field ionization detectors in a vacuum apparatus. From the Arrhenius plots the activation energies for desorption of K and K+ were determined. The chemical state of potassium at the surfaces is concluded to be: ionic on KAlO2 (with the K desorption barrier of 1.76 eV) and covalent on KFeO2 (barrier of 2.73 eV). These results agree with the data obtained earlier for industrial catalysts for ammonia and styrene production. They are interpreted in terms of the Schottky cycle, which is completed for KAlO2 and fails for KFeO2. This failure indicates a non‐equilibrium desorption process. K Rydberg states are only found to desorb from KFeO2, in agreement with the suggestion that such states in some way are responsible for the catalytic activity.

    Notes: Abstract The bond portfolio management problem is formulated as a multiperiod two-stage or multistage stochastic program based on interest rate scenarios. These scenarios depend on the available market data, on the applied estimation and sampling techniques, etc., and are used to evaluate coefficients of the resulting large scale mathematical program. The aim of the contribution is to analyze stability and sensitivity of this program on small changes of the coefficients – the (scenario dependent) values of future interest rates and prices. We shall prove that under sensible assumptions, the scenario subproblems are stable linear programs and that also the optimal first-stage decisions and the optimal value of the considered stochastic program possess acceptable continuity properties.

    Notes: Abstract We consider a reaction-diffusion system of the activator-inhibitor type with unilateral boundary conditions leading to a quasivariational inequality. We show that there exists a positive eigenvalue of the problem and we obtain an instability of the trivial solution also in some area of parameters where the trivial solution of the same system with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions is stable. Theorems are proved using the method of a jump in the Leray-Schauder degree.

    Notes: Abstract We construct A‐stable and L‐stable diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta methods of which the diagonal vector in the Butcher matrix has a minimal maximum norm. If the implicit Runge–Kutta relations are iteratively solved by means of the approximately factorized Newton process, then such iterated Runge–Kutta methods are suitable methods for integrating shallow water problems in the sense that the stability boundary is relatively large and that the usually quite fine vertical resolution of the discretized spatial domain is not involved in the stability condition.

    Notes: Abstract It has been recently shown that large growth factors might occur in Gaussian Elimination with Partial Pivoting (GEPP) also when solving some plausibly natural systems. In this note we argue that this potential problem could be easily solved, with much smaller risk of failure, by very small (and low cost) modifications of the basic algorithm, thus confirming its inherent robustness. To this end, we first propose an informal model with the goal of providing further support to the comprehension of the stability properties of GEPP. We then report the results of numerical experiments that confirm the viewpoint embedded in the model. Basing on the previous observations, we finally propose a simple scheme that could be turned into (even more) accurate software for the solution of linear systems.

    Notes: Abstract This paper studies the stability and convergence properties of general Runge-Kutta methods when they are applied to stiff semilinear systems y′(t) = J(t)y(t) + g(t, y(t)) with the stiffness contained in the variable coefficient linear part. We consider two assumptions on the relative variation of the matrix J(t) and show that for each of them there is a family of implicit Runge-Kutta methods that is suitable for the numerical integration of the corresponding stiff semilinear systems, i.e. the methods of the family are stable, convergent and the stage equations possess a unique solution. The conditions on the coefficients of a method to belong to these families turn out to be essentially weaker than the usual algebraic stability condition which appears in connection with the B-stability and convergence for stiff nonlinear systems. Thus there are important RK methods which are not algebraically stable but, according to our theory, they are suitable for the numerical integration of semilinear problems. This paper also extends previous results of Burrage, Hundsdorfer and Verwer on the optimal convergence of implicit Runge-Kutta methods for stiff semilinear systems with a constant coefficients linear part.

    Notes: Summary The paper is concerned with a one-dimensional analysis of plane open-channel flow with continuous solidification. The process is of relevance for recent developments in the casting of steel and other metals. The bottom of the channel consists of a rotating casting roll and a horizontal cooling table, where the solidified material is withdrawn with given velocity. The study is restricted to the region downstream of the top of the casting roll. Surface tension is neglected. In the main part of the analysis inviscid fluid flow is considered since the Reynolds number is very large in the applications. It is found that the steady-state solutions are nonunique in a certain parameter range. In addition to a continuous solution, there are two solutions including hydraulic jumps, with one hydraulic jump being located on the casting roll, the other one on the cooling table. Regarding the stability of the non unique solutions, the evolution of disturbances is investigated numerically as an initial-value problem. It is concluded that the hydraulic jump on the cooling table is unstable, while the other discontinuous solution as well as the continuous solution are stable for sufficiently small disturbances. Which stable solution is attained in the steady state, depends on the history of the process. Friction at the liquid/solid interface is taken into account in the last part of the analysis. A constant friction coefficient is assumed. It is found that the history of the process determines the steady-state solution if, and only if, the friction coefficient is sufficiently small. For larger values of the friction coefficient, the steady-state solution is unique and independent of the history of the transient process. Furthermore, for sufficiently large friction coefficients, stable hydraulic jumps are found, in contrast to the inviscid case, also on the cooling table.

    Notes: Abstract Legged-climbing robot is considered. Each foot of the robot has an electromagnet system for robot"s holding on a metal surface. This surface can be both vertical and inclined, including negative slope. Analytical calculation of robot stability under turn over or sliding conditions has been made. Critical slopes have been determined. One of these slopes corresponds to minimal reserve of robot stability towards sliding and another to minimal reserve of robot stability towards turning-over. As total reserve of stability of a robot is always equal to the minimal one of these reserves. Additional support elements of elastic material with high coefficient of friction, along with electromagnet, allows to increase minimal reserve of robot stability towards sliding. The use of such support elements leads to redistributing force of normal support reaction between electromagnet (which surface has low coefficient of friction) and additional support element (which surface has high coefficient of friction). It is just what leads to increasing the total friction force and as a consequence to increasing of minimal reserve of robot stability towards sliding.

    Notes: Abstract Granite (silicate) rock dust, a by-product of quarry operations, is being advocated and used as a fertilizer in the wheatbelt of south-western Australia (WA). The dust is insoluble and based on its nutrient element content (1.9% K and 0.3%P and negligible N) it is not expected to be a useful fertilizer. Previous laboratory studies and glasshouse experiments in WA suggest the dust is a slow release K fertilizer. This paper extends the previous studies to consider the dust as an NP or K fertilizer in the year of application in a field experiment on a soil deficient in N, P and K. In addition, the effectiveness of the dust as a K fertilizer was compared with the effectiveness of KCl (muriate of potash), the K fertilizer used in WA at present, in glasshouse experiments using K deficient soils. In the field experiment, compared with NP fertilizer or NPK fertilizer (urea, supplying N; superphosphate, providing P, S, Ca, Cu, Zn and Mo; KCl providing K), the dust had no effect on grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum); in fact dust applied at 20 t ha-1, for unknown reasons, reduced yields by about 65% compared to the nil (no fertilizer, no dust) treatment. Relative to the nil treatment, applying NPK fertilizer increased yields about threefold, from 0.54 to 1.79 t ha. The glasshouse experiments showed that, relative to KCl, the dust was from about 0.02 to 14% as effective in K deficient grey sandy soils for producing dried tops of 30-day old wheat plants or 42-day old clover (Trifolium subterraneum) plants. In soils with adequate K (yellow sands, sandy loams or clays, loamy clays, clay loams and clays), neither KCl nor the dust affected yields of 30 to 42-day old wheat or clover plants grown in the glasshouse. In the glasshouse experiments, no yield depressions were measured for the dust applied up to 17 g dust per kg soil (equivalent to 17 t dust ha-1 mixed into the top 10 cm of soil in the field). It is concluded that the dust has no value as a fertilizer.

    Notes: Abstract Large amounts of nitrogen (N) fertiliser (150–200 kg N/ha) are currently being applied to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) seed crops in New Zealand. Due to increasing requirements for efficient use of N fertilisers and minimising nitrate contamination of the environment, a field experiment was established using 15N-labelled fertiliser to follow the fate of applied N. Urea-15N was applied to a perennial ryegrass seed crop in April (30 kg N/ha), August (30 kg N/ha), September (60 kg N/ha) and October (60 kg N/ha). The urea-15N was applied in solution and watered in to minimise volatilisation loss. At the time of harvest (December), 9% of the applied 15N was in the seed, 29% in the straw, 19% in the roots and 39% in the soil organic matter. Losses of 15N were minimal as the N was applied in several applications, each one at a relatively low rate, and at times when leaching was unlikely to occur. Ryegrass plants used a greater proportion of the N applied in September and October (61–65%) compared with that applied in April (44%). Consequently more N was recovered from the soil in the autumn application (57%) than from the September and October applications (28–44%). The availability of the residual fertiliser N to a subsequent wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop was studied in a glasshouse experiment. The residual fertiliser N was present in the soil and ryegrass roots and stubble. The wheat plants only recovered 7–9% of this residual N. Most of the N taken up by the wheat came from the soil organic N pool. Overall, applying a total of 180 kg N/ha to the ryegrass appeared to have minimal direct impact on the environment. In the short term N not used by the ryegrass plants contributed to the soil organic N pool.

    Notes: Abstract We propose the critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a harmonic potential as a model of attractive Bose–Einstein condensates. By an elaborate mathematical analysis we show that a sharp stability threshold exists with respect to the number of condensate particles. The value of the threshold agrees with the existing experimental data. Moreover with this threshold we prove that a ground state of the condensate exists and is orbital stable. We also evaluate the minimum of the condensate energy.

    Notes: Abstract Early growth and development are often lower when wheat is sown into standing stubble. A study was conducted to determine whether this difference in early growth could be explained by the effects of stubble on soil temperature in the vicinity of the young plant. The roles of nitrogen nutrition and soil strength were also assessed. Three crops were monitored (1990–1992), with the wheat being sown into either standing wheat stubble after a no-till fallow (NT), or into no-tilled plots from which the stubble had been removed by burning (NB). Measurements were made of wheat growth and development, soil and plant N, soil temperature and penetration resistance. The site was on a black earth near Warialda in the northern wheatbelt of New South Wales, Australia. In 1992 wheat was also grown under simulated stubble to isolate the shading and soil temperature effects of stubble from other factors. A significant (P〈0.05) relationship was found between average soil temperature and above ground dry matter (DM) at 65 days after sowing (DAS) but not at 107 DAS. This relationship accounted for differences in DM production at 65 DAS between NT and NB treatments in 1991 and 1992, but not in 1990. In that year the lower DM production in NT plots was associated with poorer N nutrition, and possibly disease. Laboratory incubations indicate that immobilisation of N as stubble decomposed could have contributed to this. Burning stubble produced no immediate increase in soil N availability, so that it is unlikely that N contained in stubble contributed to the difference. Soil strength differences between treatments and phytotoxic effects are unlikely to have contributed to growth differences in this soil.

    Notes: Abstract  Low-molecular-weight (LMW) glutenin subunits consist mainly of two domains, one at the N- terminus which contains repeats of short amino-acid motifs, and a non-repetitive one rich in cysteine, at the C- terminal region. In previous reports, polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis has been used to show that large size variation exists among LMW and HMW glutenin subunits, and it has been suggested that deletions and insertions within the repetitive region are responsible for these variations in length. In this study, PCR-amplification of genomic DNA (Triticum aestivum variety Chinese Spring) was used to isolate three full-length LMW glutenin genes: LMWG-MB1, LMWG-MB2 and LMWG-MB3. The deduced amino-acid sequences show a high similarity between these ORFs, and with those of other LMW glutenin genes. Comparisons indicate that LMWG-MB1 has probably lost a 12-bp fragment through deletion and that LMWG-MB1 and LMWG-MB2 have an insertion of 81 bp within the repetitive domain. The current study has shown direct evidence that insertions and/or deletions provide a mechanistic explanation for the allelic variation, and the resultant evolution, of prolamin genes. Single-base substitutions at identical sites generate stop codons in both LMWG-MB2 and LMWG-MB3 indicating that these clones are pseudogenes.

    Notes: Abstract  The present work reports new PCR markers that amplify the complete coding sequence of the specific alleles of the high molecular weight (HMW) glutenin genes. A set of AS-PCR molecular markers was designed which use primers from nucleotide sequences of the Glu-A1 and Glu-D1 genes, making use of the minor diffeences between the sequences of the x1, x2* of Glu-A1, and the x5 and y10 of Glu-D1. These primers were able to distinguish between x2* and the x1 or xNull of Glu-A1. Also x5 was distinguishable from x2, and y10 from y12. The primers amplified the complete coding regions and corresponded to the upstream and downstream flanking positions of Glu-A1 and Glu-D1. Primers designed to amplify the Glu-A1 gene amplified a single product when used with genomic DNA of common wheats and the xNull allele of this gene. This work also describes the cloning and characterisation of the nucleotide sequence of this allele. It possesses the same general structure as x2* and x1 (previously determined) and differs from these alleles in the extension of the coding sequence for a presumptive mature protein with only 384 residues. This is due to the presence of a stop codon (TAA) 1215-bp downstream from the start codon. A further stop codon (TAG), 2280-bp downstream from the starting codon is also found. The open reading frame of xNull and x1 alleles has the same size in bp. Both are larger than x2* which shows two small deletions. The reduced size of the presumptive mature protein encoded by xNull could explain the negative effect of this allele on grain quality.

    Notes: Abstract  Molecular markers were identified in common wheat for the Pm24 locus conferring resistance to different isolates of the powdery mildew pathogen, Erysiphe graminis DM f. sp. tritici (Em. Marchal). Bulked segregant analysis was used to identify amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers and microsatellite markers linked to the gene Pm24 in an F2 progeny from the cross Chinese Spring (susceptible)× Chiyacao (resistant). Two AFLP markers XACA/CTA-407 and XACA/CCG-420, and three microsatellite markers Xgwm106, Xgwm337 and Xgwm458, were mapped in coupling phase to the Pm24 locus. The AFLP marker locus XACA/CTA-407 co-segregated with the Pm24 gene, and XACA/CCG-420 mapped 4.5 cM from this gene. Another AFLP marker locus XAAT/CCA-346 co- segregated in repulsion phase with the Pm24 locus. Pm24 was mapped close to the centromere on the short arm of chromosome 1D, contrary to the previously reported location on chromosome 6D. Pm24 segregated independently of gene Pm22, also located on chromosome 1D. An allele of microsatellite locus Xgwm337 located 2.4±1.2 cM from Pm24 was shown to be diagnostic and therefore potentially useful for pyramiding two or more genes for powdery mildew resistance in a single genotype.

    Notes: Abstract  Waxy (Wx) protein is a granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS) responsible for amylose production in cereal endosperm. Eight isolines of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) having different combinations of presence and absence of three Wx proteins, Wx-A1, -B1, and -D1, were produced in order to elucidate the effect of Wx protein deficiencies on the apparent amylose content and starch-pasting properties. An improved SDS gel electrophoresis showed that ’Bai Huo’ (a parental wheat) carried a variant Wx-B1 protein from an allele, Wx-B1e. Thus, wheat lines of types 1, 2, 4, and 6 examined in this study contained a variant Wx-B1 allele and not the standard allele, Wx-B1a. The results from 3 years of experiments using 176 lines derived from two cross-combinations showed that apparent amylose content increased the least in type 8 (waxy) having no Wx proteins and, in ascending order, increased in type 5 (only the Wx-A1 protein is present) 〈type 7 (Wx-D1) 〈type 6 (Wx-B1) 〈type 3 (Wx-A1 and -D1) 〈type 4 (Wx-A1 and -B1) 〈type 2 (Wx-B1 and -D1) 〈type 1 (three Wx proteins). However, Tukey’ s studentized range test did not detect significant differences in some cases. Densitometric analysis suggested that the amylose content was related to the amount of the Wx protein in the eight types. Parameters in the Rapid Visco-Analyzer test and swelling power were correlated to amylose content. Consequently, amylose content and pasting properties of starch were determined to be influenced the most by the lack of the Wx-B1 protein, followed by a lack of Wx-D1, and leastly by the Wx-A1 deficiency, which indicated the presence of differential effects of the three null alleles for the Wx protein.

    Notes: Abstract  The evolution of adult plant resistance towards powdery mildew (caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) was investigated in 11 wheat populations cultivated for 10 years in a French network for dynamic management (DM) of wheat genetic resources. The aims of the study were to compare the evolution of resistance in sites submitted to different powdery mildew pressure and to investigate the implication of specific resistance gene action in adult plant resistance. For this, 7 of the 11 populations were characterized for their composition of specific resistance genes (results presented in a former paper). Even though no population differed significantly from the initial PA0 pool for mean adult plant resistance, divergence appeared among the final populations. The populations with the highest adult plant resistance level originated from sites where powdery mildew pressure is known to be high (Vervins, Le Rheu), whereas populations with the lowest adult plant resistance corresponded to areas with no, or very low, powdery mildew pressure (Toulouse, Montreuil-Bellay). A residual effect of defeated specific resistance genes was hypothesized, as lines accumulating at least two specific resistance genes appeared more resistant. Additional quantitative resistance seemed to be involved in adult plant resistance. DM lines appeared then as an interesting source of variability for resistance towards powdery mildew. Moreover, as these lines had been grown in mixed populations they may be appropriate as components of a composite cultivar.

    Notes: Abstract  Extended physical maps of chromosomes 6A, 6B and 6D of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell., 2n=6x=42, AABBDD) were constructed with 107 DNA clones and 45 homoeologous group-6 deletion lines. Two-hundred and ten RFLP loci were mapped, including three orthologous loci with each of 34 clones, two orthologous loci with each of 31 clones, one locus with 40 clones, two paralogous loci with one clone, and four loci, including three orthologs and one paralog, with one clone. Fifty five, 74 and 81 loci were mapped in 6A, 6B and 6D, respectively. The linear orders of the mapped orthologous loci in 6A, 6B and 6D appear to be identical and 65 loci were placed on a group-6 consensus physical map. Comparison of the consensus physical map with eight linkage maps of homoeologous group-6 chromosomes from six Triticeaespecies disclosed that the linear orders of the loci on the maps are largely, if not entirely, conserved. The relative distributions of loci on the physical and linkage maps differ markedly, however. On most of the linkage maps, the loci are either distributed relatively evenly or clustered around the centromere. In contrast, approximately 90% of the loci on the three physical maps are located either in the distal one-half or the distal two-thirds of the six chromosome arms and most of the loci are clustered in two or three segments in each chromosome.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we studied the interface debonding when a crack perpendicularly approaches an interface between two dissimilar elastic materials. An interface toughness law was first defined according to an adhesive model governing the interface fracture. By analysing the interaction between the normally approaching crack and the interface crack and by tacking account of the adhesive forces at ends of the interfacial crack, a model for studying the interface debonding and the debonding stability was established. It is observed that the interface debonding toughness depends strongly on the mixed mode locally produced over the plastic adhesive zone of the interface. Moreover, the interface debonding may be unstable, i.e. the interface debonding length may jump from an initial value to a certain final value under critical remote loading. This jump may be surprisedly important in certain cases. These results agree with the experimental works gathered so far and can be used to explain the mechanism of 'crack arrestor' formed by an interface.

    Notes: Abstract A fine-grained statisticaly robust probability sample of stream segments is used to compare two small (20,000 hectare) subbasins of the Tillamook watershed, north coastal Oregon. The two subbasins are matched with respect to several variables [size coastal climates], but vary in terms of geology and consequently land use. A total of 67 wadeable + non-wadeable sizes were identified for sampling in the two subbasins (combined) over two field seasons from a sampling universe consisting of the River Reach File 3 (blue lines on 1:100,000 maps). Target variables include an extensive array of physical habitat endpoints, selected water chemistry endpoints, species composition, and relative abundance of both benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. Field protocols generally followed those of the U.S. EPA's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP). Eleven fish species were encountered, a typically low number for coastal Oregon streams. Exploratory analysis using nonmetric multidimensional scaling revealed that 92.4% of the variation in the fish assemblages could be explained with two ordination axes. Environmental factors related to stream size and substate were the most correlated to these axes. Further, stream segments for the two subbasins tended to map in different areas of species space. Therefore, we also give unweighted probability distributions for several of the factors that heavily on these two axes by subbasins, as well as probability distributions for chemical endpoints. Results from the subset of sites sampled during the first year (21 wadeable sites) reveal: 1) differences between samples from the two subbasins relates to dream size and substrate composition that are consistent with known differences in geology and land use, 2) unexpectedly minor differences between samples from the two subbasins for stream temperature, canopy cover, and dissolved oxygen, 3) differences between samples from the two subbasins for total P, and total N, possibly related to land use, and 4) unexpected differences in samples from the two subbasins for conductivity, probably related to geological factors. Sample size for each subbasin is low and therefore our samples cannot be taken to necessarily characterize either subbasin. However, our findings are consistent with a comprehensive assessment that had been previously produced for one of the two subbasins. All field work was completed in 8 weeks 3-person field crew. We conclude that rapid assessment protocols, based on probability samples at this level of resolution, can be a cost-effective approach to watershed analysis. This approach should be seen as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, systematic surveys that produced finer scale, reach specific information on factors such as channel complexity and cover relevant to in-stream restoration planning.

    Notes: Abstract The reproductive function of fish, which is very sensitive to the variations of environmental factors, appears also to be particularly vulnerable to the presence of xenobiotics in the aquatic medium. Many physiological processes can be impaired, from sexual differentiation to female and male gametogenesis, due to disruptions among complex neuro-endrocrine, endocrine or paracrine regulations. This paper describes the main regulation steps that are known or can be suspected to be disrupted by xenobiotics and gives some examples. The large interspecific diversity of reproductive strategies and the complexity of underlying mechanisms are particularly highlighted to draw attention to possible confusions between real endocrine disruptions and natural physiological variations.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of exogenously added Ca2+ on the enzymatic activity and structural stability of methanol dehydrogenase were studied for various Ca2+ concentrations. Methanol dehydrogenase activity increased significantly with increasing concentration of Ca2+, approaching saturation at 200 mM Ca2+. The effect of Ca2+ on the activation of MDH was time dependent and Ca2+ specific and was due to binding of the metal ions to the enzyme. Addition of increasing concentration of Ca2+ caused a decrease of the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence intensity in a concentration-dependent manner to a minimum at 200 mM, but with no change in the fluorescence emission maximum wavelength or the CD spectra. The results revealed that the activation of methanol dehydrogenase by Ca2+ occurred concurrently with the conformational change. In addition, exogenously bound Ca2+ destabilized MDH. The potential biological significance of these results is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  Dynamic management has been proposed as a complementary strategy to gene banks for the conservation of genetic resources. The evolution of frequencies of genes for specific resistance towards powdery mildew (caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) in populations of a French network for dynamic management of bread wheat genetic resources was investigated after 10 years of multiplication without human selection. The objective was to determine whether specific resistance gene diversity was maintained in the populations and whether any changes could be attributed to selection due to pathogen pressure. Seven populations, originating from four of the network sites, were characterized and compared to the initial population for six specific resistance gene frequencies detected by nine Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici isolates. Diversity decreased at the population level, but because of a strong differentiation between the populations, this diversity was maintained at the network level. The comparison of Fst parameters estimated on neutral markers (RFLP) and on resistance gene data revealed that in two of the populations specific resistance genes had been selected by pathogen pressure, whereas evolution in two other populations seemed to be the result of genetic drift. For the three last populations, conclusions were less clear, as one had probably experienced a strong bottleneck and the other two presented intermediate Fst values. A dynamic management network with sites contrasted for pathogen pressure, allowing genetic drift in some populations and selection in others, appeared, at least on the short term, to be a good tool for maintaining the diversity of genes for specific resistance to powdery mildew.

    Notes: Abstract This paper studies interactions of pipe and fluid and deals with bifurcations of a cantilevered pipe conveying a steady fluid, clamped at one end and having a nozzle subjected to nonlinear constraints at the free end. Either the nozzle parameter or the flow velocity is taken as a variable parameter. The discrete equations of the system are obtained by the Ritz-Galerkin method. The static stability is studied by the Routh criteria. The method of averaging is employed to examine the analytical results and the chaotic motions. Three critical values are given. The first one makes the system lose the static stability by pitchfork bifurcation. The second one makes the system lose the dynamical stability by Hopf bifurcation. The third one makes the periodic motions of the system lose the stability by doubling-period bifurcation.

    Notes: Abstract Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings of three cultivars differing in frost resistance were used to study cooling-induced changes in the bioelectric potential. Measurements were performed with nonfreezing graphite–glycerol electrodes in the regime of monitoring. Upon a gradual change in air temperature from 20 to –15°C at the rates of 20 and 2°C/h, the bioelectric potential underwent abrupt transitions at certain moments, indicating changes in the physiological condition of plants. The time required for the achievement of these critical states, as well as the survival of plants after thawing, depended both on the temperature and the cooling rate. Apparently, these characteristics were related to the dynamics of phase transitions of water. Cultivar-specific features were manifested in the different abilities of plants to maintain free water in a supercooled state. It is supposed that the critical points are related to the cold resistance of colloid systems and to the temperature lethal for plants.

    Notes: Abstract Temporal and spatial trends were examined in benthic macroinvertebrate and physical-chemical data collected for at least ten years at ten sites along the plains reach of the Cache la Poudre River, Colorado, USA. A distinct longitudinal environment gradient was found as many of the water chemistry parameter levels changed downstream from the reference site. Seasonal Kendall analyses on individual sites indicated that several chemical parameters, including conductivity, un-ionized NH3-N and NO2-N have increased since the beginning of the study within most sites. Levels of some parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, un-ionized NH3-N) violated aquatic life standards a few times during the study. Over 175 taxa of macroinvertebrates (primarily insects) were collected in the study reach from 1981–1996. Results from detrended correspondence analyses (DCA) on macroinvertebrate data indicated that this stretch of the river exhibited little longitudinal change beyond the two farthest upstream sites. There was a decline in macroinvertebrate density and total number of taxa within most individual sites during 1983–1984, corresponding with the highest recorded discharge in 75 years (1983) and a prolonged, heavy spring runoff in 1984. Taxa richness and density recovered to pre-1983 levels within a few months to a year following the high flows at most sites. These findings suggested that the macroinvertebrate assemblages had low resistance to disturbance, but high resilience. However, the results from DCAs and Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance (W) on individual sites for the entire study period suggested a similar macroinvertebrate community structure through time. It would appear that the composition and abundance of the lotic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Poudre River has remained relatively constant over the long-term. This has occurred even with some potentially negative changes in water chemistry and increased urban development.

The needfor nutritional sources safer than traditional animalproducts has renewed interest in plants in general andalgae in particular. This report deals principallywith the nutritional role of microalgae inaquaculture.The larvae of molluscs, echinoderms andcrustaceans as well as the live prey of some fishlarvae feed on microalgae. Though attempts have beenmade to substitute inert particles for thesemicro-organisms which are difficult to produce,concentrate and store, only shrimp and live prey forfish will accept inert food, and only shrimp accept itfully. Several studies have confirmed that a live,multi-specific, low-bacteria microalgal biomassremains essential for shellfish hatcheries. Majoradvances are expected from new production systemdesigns and operations, from batch-run open tanks tomore sophisticated continuously run and closed loopreactors. Studies are underway to simplify hatcheryoperations by replacing biomass produced on-site withrun-times by that produced and preserved elsewhere.Although still promising, they have not given rise, sofar, to any application for molluscs. Otherapplications of microalgae in aquaculture, from greenwater to making salmon flesh pinker, are examined.Whether produced on or off-site, there remains thequestion of cost effectiveness of microalgalproduction systems. This can only be achieved bysubstantial upscaling and improved quality control.

    Notes: Abstract A second-order accurate numerical method has been proposed for the solution of a coupled non-linear oscillator featuring in chemical kinetics. Although implicit by construction, the method enables the solution of the model initial-value problem (IVP) to be computed explicitly. The second-order method is constructed by taking a linear combination of first-order methods. The stability analysis of the system suggests the existence of a Hopf bifurcation, which is confirmed by the numerical method. Both the critical point of the continuous system and the fixed point of the numerical method will be seen to have the same stability properties. The second-order method is more competitive in terms of numerical stability than some well-known standard methods (such as the Runge–Kutta methods of order two and four).

    Notes: Abstract We consider the modified conjugate gradient procedure for solving A $$\underline x $$ = $$\underline b $$ in which the approximation space is based upon the Krylov space associated with A 1/p and $$\underline b $$ , for any integer p. For the square-root MCG (p=2) we establish a sharpened bound for the error at each iteration via Chebyshev polynomials in $$\sqrt A$$ . We discuss the implications of the quickly accumulating effect of an error in $$\sqrt A$$ $$\underline b $$ in the initial stage, and find an error bound even in the presence of such accumulating errors. Although this accumulation of errors may limit the usefulness of this method when $$\sqrt A$$ $$\underline b $$ is unknown, it may still be successfully applied to a variety of small, “almost-SPD” problems, and can be used to jump-start the conjugate gradient method. Finally, we verify these theoretical results with numerical tests.

    Notes: Abstract A generalization of the Little–Hopfield neural network model for associative memories is presented that considers the case of a continuum of processing units. The state space corresponds to an infinite dimensional euclidean space. A dynamics is proposed that minimizes an energy functional that is a natural extension of the discrete case. The case in which the synaptic weight operator is defined through the autocorrelation rule (Hebb rule) with orthogonal memories is analyzed. We also consider the case of memories that are not orthogonal. Finally, we discuss the generalization of the non deterministic, finite temperature dynamics.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years, a number of workers have studied the stability of deep lakes such as Lake Tanganyika, Lake Baikal and Lake Malawi. In this paper, the methods that can be used to determine the effect that the components of lakes have on the equation of state are examined. The PVT properties of Lakes have been determined by using apparent molal volume data for the major ionic components of the lake. The estimated PVT properties (densities, expansibility and compressibilities) of the lakes are found to be in good agreement with the PVT properties (P) of seawater diluted to the same salinity. This is similar to earlier work that showed that the PVT properties of rivers and estuarine waters could also be estimated from the properties of seawater. The measured densities of Lake Tanganyika were found to be in good agreement (± 2 × 10-6 g cm-3) with the values estimated from partial molal properties and the values of seawater at the same total salinity (ST = 0.568‰). The increase in the densities of Lake Tanganyika waters increased due to changes in the composition of the waters. The measured increase in the measured density (45 × 10-6 g cm-3) is in good agreement (46 × 10-6 g cm-3) with the values calculated for the increase in Na+, HCO3 -, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Si(OH)4. Methods are described that can be used to determine the conductivity salinity of lakes using the equations developed for seawater. By combining these relationships with apparent molal volume data, one can relate the PVT properties of the lake to those of seawater.

    Notes: Abstract The Eurasian and North American beavers aresimilar in their ecological requirements, andrequire water deep enough to cover the entranceto their lodge or burrow. A food cache isoften built next to the lodge or burrow, exceptin some southern areas. On small streams (upto fourth order) dams are frequently built tocreate an impoundment, generally on lowgradient streams, although at high populationdensities dams may be built on steeper gradientstreams. On large rivers or in lakes, simply alodge with its food cache may be built. Thebeaver is a keystone riparian species in thatthe landscape can be considerably altered byits activities and a new ecosystem created. The stream above a dam changes from lotic tolentic conditions. There are hydrological,temperature and chemical changes, depending ontypes of dams and locations. Although theinvertebrates may be fewer per unit area, totalnumber of organisms increases, and diversityincreases as the pond ages. In cool, smallorder streams, the impoundments provide betterhabitat for large trout, possibly creatingangling opportunities. However, at sites wherewater temperatures rise above their optimumpreferenda, salmonids may be replaced by otherspecies, such as cyprinids, catostomids,percids or centrarchids. As the habitat isaltered, interactions amongst co-habiting species may change. For example, brown troutor brook trout (charr) may become dominant overAtlantic salmon. In warm water streams theremay be a shift from faster water dwellers topond dwellers. Larger bodied fish, such ascentrarchids and esocids may displace smallerbodied fish such as cyprinids, providing betterangling. Refugia from high or low water flows,low oxygen or high temperatures, may beprovided in adverse conditions in winter orsummer. However, in some cases dams areobstructions to upstream migration, andsediment may be deposited in former spawningareas. The practicality and benefits ofintroducing or restoring beaver populationswill vary according to location, and should beconsidered in conjunction with a managementplan to control their densities.

    Notes: Abstract Mechanical systems subjected to dissipative, gyroscopic, conservative, and also nonconservative positional forces are considered. The question of the effect of dissipative, gyroscopic, and conservative forces on the motion stability of a mechanical systems is determined by classical Kelvin–Chetaev theorems [1]. The presence of nonconservative positional forces considerably complicates the situation and excludes direct application of these theorems. Applying Lyapunov's functions method the condition of asymptotic stability of a mechanical system under the action of all listed above forces is obtained. Moreover, the estimation of the attraction domain in phase space is found. The precession system which is used in the solution of some problems in the applied theory of the gyroscopic systems is also examined. The connection between the stability of origin and precession systems is detected. Theoretical results are applied to the stabilization problem of stationary motion of the balanced gimbal suspension gyro by means of external moments.

    Notes: Abstract The mangrove system of Sine Saloum in Senegal is characterized by the lack of permanent river flow, in the context of the Sahelian drought which began in the 70s. The main environmental consequence is that Sine Saloum has become a so called ‘reversed estuary’ with salinity increasing upstream and reaching 100‰ and more, with a mean salinity between 45–50‰. A three‐year survey of the juvenile fish community was undertaken with the aim of verifying whether or not this environment is still suitable as a nursery area for exploited fish populations. The main sampling gear used were small fyke‐nets in addition to gill nets and a limited rotenone sampling. One of the six mangrove stations included in the survey exhibited a relatively high species diversity. This station is the only one where salinity may reach levels as low as 25‰ at the end of the rainy season, although salinity is much higher in the upstream region near this station. Such a low salinity is likely due to an underground freshwater connection or underwater springs. These observations highlight the relative importance of estuaries and mangroves in the nursery function.

    Notes: Abstract The present ultrastructural investigation on the effects of 50 μM chlorpropham (previously called CIPC) on growing roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum (L.) Thell cv. Vergina) was undertaken to clarify the mechanism of a carbamate herbicide action in plant cells, since the wide range of responses of plant cells to carbamate herbicides is based mainly on immunofluorescence studies. Cells of control roots contained abundant microtubules both in interphase and mitotic arrays. In chlorpropham-treated roots, however, no microtubules could be detected at all, neither in dividing nor in differentiating cells. Cycling cells became binucleate, polyploid or contained incomplete cell walls, the result of inhibition of cytokinesis. In long-term drug treatments (24 h or more) the affected cells entered a new cycle, which, however, did not progress beyond mid-metaphase. The nuclei of binucleate cells initiated prophase synchronously. Small vacuoles and Golgi vesicles were trapped within the nucleoplasm of the multilobed nuclei. In roots recovering from 8 h chlorpropham treatment, cells continued to exhibit polyploid nuclei, intranuclear vacuoles and incomplete walls. Microtubules reappeared but they were sparse and lacked a definite orientation. Preprophase cells did not form normal preprophase bands of microtubules, while mitotic cells occasionally contained microtubules bound to chromosomes and converged to minipoles. It is concluded that chlorpropham disorganized directly microtubules in addition to irreversibly affecting microtubule organizing centres, which failed to further support microtubule arrays.

    Notes: Abstract New information on N uptake and transport of inorganic and organic N in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is reviewed here. Hyphae of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe (BEG 107) were shown to transport N supplied as 15N-Gly to wheat plants after a 48 h labelling period in semi-hydroponic (Perlite), non-sterile, compartmentalised pot cultures. Of the 15N supplied to hyphae in pot cultures over 48 h, 0.2 and 6% was transported to plants supplied with insufficient N or sufficient N, respectively. The increased 15N uptake at the higher N supply was related to the higher hyphal length density at the higher N supply. These findings were supported by results from in vitro and monoxenic studies. Excised hyphae from four Glomus isolates (BEG 84, 107, 108 and 110) acquired N from both inorganic (15NH4 15NO3, 15NO3 − or 15NH4 +) and organic (15N-Gly and 15N-Glu, except in BEG 84 where amino acid uptake was not tested) sources in vitro during short-term experiments. Confirming these studies under sterile conditions where no bacterial mineralisation of organic N occurred, monoxenic cultures of Glomus intraradices Schenk and Smith were shown to transport N from organic sources (15N-Gly and 15N-Glu) to Ri T-DNA transformed, AM-colonised carrot roots in a long-term experiment. The higher N uptake (also from organic N) by isolates from nutrient poor sites (BEG 108 and 110) compared to that from a conventional agricultural field implied that ecotypic differences occur. Although the arbuscular mycorrhizal isolates used contributed to the acquisition of N from both inorganic and organic sources by the host plants/roots used, this was not enough to increase the N nutritional status of the mycorrhizal compared to non-mycorrhizal hosts.

    Notes: Abstract A suitable form of iron supplement in the induction medium was found to be important for further development of induced pollen embryos in barley and wheat cultivars (genotypes), especially those providing few green plants viain vitro androgenesis. Genotypes able to regenerate many green plants were less susceptible to the lack of iron in induction medium. Although Fe-EDTA was found to be a suitable form of iron in the induction medium, androgenesis was also induced on media containing non-chelated iron (Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions). EDTA alone without iron inhibited the androgenic response even in the wheat cv. Florida, a model cultivar for androgenesis in wheat. In all barley cultivars under study including cv. Igri, a model cultivar for androgenesis in barley, EDTA alone caused an almost total suppression of androgenesis.

    Notes: Abstract Previously chromosome 3A of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was reported to carry genes influencing yield, yield components, plant height, and anthesis date. The objective of current study was to survey various molecular marker systems for their ability to detect polymorphism between wheat cultivars Cheyenne(CNN) and Wichita (WI), particularly for chromosome3A. Seventy-seven `sequence tagged site' (STS), 10simple sequence repeat (SSR), 40 randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, and 52 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) probes for wheat homoeologous group 3 chromosomes, were investigated. Three (3.9%) STS-PCR primer sets amplified polymorphic fragments for the two cultivars, of which one was polymorphic for chromosome 3A. Sixty percent of SSR markers detected polymorphism between CNN and WI of which 50% were polymorphic for chromosome 3A. Twenty percent of RAPD markers detected polymorphism between CNN and WI in general, but none of these detected polymorphism for chromosome 3A. Of the fifty-two RFLP probes, 78.8% detected polymorphism between CNN and WI for group 3 chromosomes with one or more of seven restriction enzymes and 42% of the polymorphic fragements were for chromosome 3A. These high levels of RFLP and SSR polymorphisms between two related wheat cultivars could be used to map and tag genes influencing important agronomic traits. It may also be important to reconsider RFLP as the most suitable marker system at least for anchor maps of closely related wheat cultivars.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution and allelic expressivity of hybrid necrosis genes (Ne 1 and Ne 2) were studied in 21 winter (mostly exotic) and 43 spring type elite wheat genotypes, by crossing them with two known testers, C 306 (Ne 1-carrier) and HD 2380 (Ne 2-carrier).Ne 1 gene was present in one north-west Himalayan winter wheat landrace, Shoure Local, but absent in the other winter as well as spring wheats. Ne 2 gene was prevalent to a much lower extent in the exotic winter wheat germplasm (31.57%) as compared to the recently developed Indian and Mexican spring wheat semidwarfs (69.80%). This may suggest that breeders have tried to preclude hybrid necrosis by selecting for non-carrier genotypes in the development of exotic winter wheats in contrast to the situation in spring wheats. Based on the degree of expression of hybrid necrosis genes in the F1 hybrids, the carrier genotypes were characterized with respect to the allelic strength of the hybrid necrosis genes. The 27 non-carrier genotypes of the two ecotypes identified in the present study have a greater potential use in future hybridization programmes so as to overcome the problem of hybrid necrosis.

    Notes: Abstract Variation in the electrophoretic banding patterns of high-molecular-weight (HMW) glutenin subunits of 274hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum) varieties from China was examined by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and 27 different major HMW glutenin subunits were identified. Each variety contained three to five subunits and 29different glutenin subunit patterns were observed in274 Chinese hexaploid wheats. Seventeen alleles were identified based on the comparison of subunits mobility with that previously identified in a set of standard hexaploid wheats. The Chinese hexaploid wheats exhibited allelic variation in HMW glutenin subunit composition and the variation differed from that of Japanese and hexaploid wheats of other countries.

    Notes: Abstract In order to determine the effects of bunt inoculation on frost resistance and winter hardiness in lines containing resistance genes, the bunt [Tilletia foetida (Wallroth) Liro, T. caries (DC.) Tulasne] susceptibility of wheat lines containing bunt resistance genesBt1 to Bt10 and the effect of the year on the degree of infection were studied over six years from 1991 to 1997 in an artificial inoculation nursery. Uninoculated and artificially inoculated wheat plants were tested for frost resistance in the phytotron in 1995 and in the field in boxes in three years from 1994/95 to 1996/97. The line withBt10 was very resistant, lines with Bt5, Bt6, Bt8 and Bt9 were resistant, the line with Bt4 was moderately resistant, those with Bt2 and Bt3 were moderately susceptible, the line with Bt1 was susceptible and the line with Bt7 was very susceptible to the local bunt population in Hungary. Bunt incidence also varied over years. The frost resistance of the Bt lines was generally lower after bunt inoculation than that of uninoculated plants. The increased frost kill in inoculated plants was not correlated with the extent of varietal susceptibility to bunt. Some lines with resistance, namely those with Bt5 (1.6% infection), Bt8 (0.6%) and Bt10 (0.0%), suffered significantly greater frost kill in the young plant stage as the result of bunt inoculation. By contrast, the Bt7line had excellent frost resistance and winter hardiness but suffered the greatest extent of bunt infection, whereas the Bt6 line had good frost resistance and good bunt resistance.

    Notes: Abstract Tolerance to Zn deficiency in wheat germplasm may be inversely related to uptake and transport of Fe to shoots. The present study examined eight bread (Triticum aestivum) and two durum (T. turgidum L. conv. durum) wheat genotypes for their capacity to take up and transport Fe when grown under either Fe or Zn deficiency. Bread wheat genotypes Aroona, Excalibur and Stilleto showed tolerance to Zn and Fe deficiency, while durum wheat genotypes are clearly less tolerant to either deficiency. Roots of bread wheats tolerant to Zn deficiency exuded more phytosiderophores than sensitive bread and durum genotypes. Greater amounts of phytosideophores were exuded by roots grown under Fe than Zn deficiency. A relatively poor relationship existed between phytosiderophore exudation or the Fe uptake rate and relative shoot growth under Fe deficiency. At advanced stages of Zn deficiency, genotypes tolerant to Zn deficiency (Aroona and Stilleto) had a greater rate of Fe uptake than other genotypes. Zinc deficiency depressed the rate of Fe transport to shoots in all genotypes in early stages, while advanced Zn deficiency had the opposite effect. Compared with Zn-sufficient plants, 17-day-old Zn-deficient plants of genotypes tolerant to Zn deficiency had a lower rate of Fe transport to shoots, while genotypes sensitive to Zn deficiency (Durati, Yallaroi) had the Fe transport rate increased by Zn deficiency. A proportion of total amount of Fe taken up that was transported to shoots increased with duration of either Fe or Zn deficiency. It is concluded that greater tolerance to Zn deficiency among wheat genotypes is associated with the increased exudation of phytosiderophores, an increased Fe uptake rate and decreased transport of Fe to shoots.

    Notes: Abstract Two lines of hexaploid wheat were crossed and the basic generations of parent, F1, F2 and back-cross were sown in a controlled-environment chamber. FreshF1 and back-cross grains were generated, so the material could be handled either as the standard set of basic generations on a whole-plant basis, or as an extended set on an embryo or endosperm basis. The experiment was repeated. Mature grains were harvested and the starch particle size distribution was analysed in 3284 grains from 111 plants. Means and variances were partitioned into additive, dominance and interaction components. Grains from cross-pollinations had B-granule contents between parental values, rather than of the maternal parent, indicating an involvement of the grain genotype. Quantitative models based on endosperm genotype gave a better fit to the data than those based on embryo genotype. The difference in starch B-granule content between the parents was largely due to additive genes. Dominant genes were also indicated, with the first dose in the triploid endosperm having a large effect while the second dose had little or none. Non-allelic interactions were significant in the second experiment where the use of more types of backcross made them more detectable. There were also small and significant residual effects of the maternal plant in the first experiment, attributed to the vigour of the F1 mother plant and to the cytoplasm of Sunco. Narrow-sense heritability was low, between 0.05and 0.18 depending on the generation. Transgressive segregation was not found, suggesting that all alleles tending to increase the B-granule content were found in the Sunco parent and none in ME71. There was also no detectable heterosis in this character. The results show that breeding and selection for a low B-granule content should be possible but a further reduction will require new and complementary genes.

    Notes: Abstract The genetic constitution of resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB, scab) caused by Fusarium graminearum in the Chinese wheat cultivar Sumai 3 and the Japanese cultivar Saikai 165 was investigated using doubled haploid lines (DHLs) and recombinant inbred lines (RILs). Frequency distributions of DHLs derived from two F1 crosses, Sumai 3 (very resistant to resistant; VR-R) / Gamenya (very susceptible; VS) and Sumai 3 / Emblem (VS), fitted well to 1: 2: 1 (resistant: moderately resistant: susceptible) ratios for reaction to FHB in the field. It is suggested that the resistance of Sumai 3 is controlled by two major genes with additive effects. One of the resistance genes may be linked in repulsion to the dominant suppressor B1 for awnedness with recombination values 15.1 ± 3.3% in Sumai 3 /Gamenya and 21.4 ± 4.3% in Sumai 3 / Emblem. Saikai 165 is a Japanese resistant line derived from an F1 Sumai 3 / Asakaze-komugi (moderately resistant; MR). The data for RILs derived from the cross Emblem / Saikai 165, indicates that three resistance genes control the resistance of Saikai 165.

    Notes: Abstract In order to test if selection can improve a population's adaptation to diverse environments simultaneously, three cycles of recurrent selection based on grain yield in Iowa, Idaho, and Norway were practiced in an oat (Avena sativaL.) population developed from North American, Scandinavian, and wild species (A. sterilis L.) germplasm sources. Specific objectives were to determine if selection: increased mean yields across environments and within all environments; changed the genetic correlation of yields in different environments; and changed genetic variation for yield within the population. We evaluated 100 to 210 randomly-chosen families from each cycle of selection at three Iowa locations, in Idaho, and in Norway for two years. Grain yield within each location and mean yields across locations increased significantly over cycles of selection. Mean yields across locations expressed as a percent of the original population mean increased at a rate of 2.6% per year. Several families from the third cycle population exhibited both high mean yields across locations and consistently high yields within all locations. Average genetic correlations of yield in different environments were higher in the second cycle than in the original population. A trend of reduced genetic variation and heritability was observed in Iowa only. These results suggest that we successfully improved mean population yield both within and across locations, and yield stability across environments, and in developing families with outstanding adaptation to diverse environments.

    Notes: Abstract Tolerance to Fe deficiency of wheat genotypes exhibiting differential tolerance to Zn deficiency is not known, even though the relationship between Fe nutrition and differential tolerance of wheat genotypes to Zn deficiency has been hypothesised frequently. In the present experiment, eight Triticum aestivum and two T. turigidum L. conv. durum cultivars were grown in nutrient solution deficient in either Znor Fe. Three indices of tolerance to nutrient deficiency were compared: relative [(-nutrient/+nutrient) × 100] shoot growth, shoot dry weight under nutrient deficiency and relative shoot/root dry weight ratio. Genotypes Aroona, Excalibur, Stilleto and Trident were classified as tolerant to both Zn and Fe deficiency, while durum wheats Durati and Yallaroi were sensitive to Zn deficiency and moderate to sensitive to Fe deficiency. Genotypes Excalibur, Stilleto and Trident come from the same breeding programme and have the common parent (line MEC3 =Sonora64//TZPP/YAQUI54) that could have been the donor of the genes for tolerance to Zn deficiency. When Fe-deficient, all wheat genotypes were severely chlorotic but kept producing shoot and root dry matter at a relatively high rate, making the relationship between the relative shoot growth and the relative leaf chlorophyll content poor. This is the first report of wheat genotypes exhibiting multiple tolerance to Zn and Fe deficiencies.

    Notes: Abstract I investigated the reproductive biology of introduced blackchin tilapia, Sarotherodon melanotheron, over a twelve month period within a seasonally impounded mangrove ecosystem in east-central Florida, and compared the data to published accounts from native African habitats. Eggs and free embryos were collected from the buccal cavity of adult males from April to October indicating a protracted spawning season, however gonadosomatic indices suggested that most spawning occurred in April and May. The timing of reproduction was adjusted to occur immediately before temperatures reached optimal levels for juvenile growth and when increasing rainfall produced abundant food and shelter for the young. Temperatures below 24°C inhibited reproduction from November to March. The overall sex ratio was essentially 1:1. The minimum and maximum size at maturity were much larger in this study than those reported from Africa; the smallest mature male was 128 mm standard length and 0.47 of the maximum size, while the smallest mature female was 145 mm standard length and 0.54 the maximum size. However, because of the difficulty in aging this species and a lack of published information, it could not be determined whether the population in this study possessed a relatively early or delayed maturation compared to African populations.

Mean daily food intake (MDI; g d−1) and relative daily food intake (RDI; g g−1 d−1) increased with temperature from 2.4 to 10.8°C and decreased at 23.4°C. Temperatures of maximum daily food intake values were 13.6°C for MDI and 14.4°C for RDI. No correlation between food intake values and burbot weight was observed. RDI values were used to estimate annual food consumption of burbot population. Annual food consumption estimates were 9.7 kg ha−1 and 24.3 kg ha−1 when burbot biomass was 2.0 or 5.0 kg ha−1, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The visual ecology of fishes places changing demands on their visual system during development. Study of changes in the eye can suggest possible changes in behavioral ecology. The spectral transmission of the pre-retinal ocular media controls the wavelength of light that reaches the retina and is a simply measured indication of their potential visual capabilities. Dascyllus albisella is a coral reef planktivore known to have UV-sensitive retinal cone cells. UV vision probably aids in detection of zooplankton. As a juvenile it is very closely associated with branching coral heads or, more rarely, sea anemones. As it matures, it ventures farther from its coral, above the reef, and eventually assumes a more vagile life style, moving farther and more frequently afield. Their eyes contain short-wavelength blocking compounds in the lens, cornea and humors. As they age, both the lens and the cornea accumulate blocking compounds that increase the 50% transmission cutoff of the whole eye from ca. 330 nm in 2–3 cm juveniles to ca. 360 nm in the largest adults. The cornea increases its cutoff wavelength faster than the lens and becomes the primary filter in large adults. The cutoff of the aqueous and vitreous humors combined does not change with size. The slope of the transmission cutoff curve increases with the size of the fish. The increased blocking of UV radiation is likely not an adaptation to protect the eye from short-wavelength induced damage. Instead it probably reduces the image degradation effects of short-wavelength light in the largest eyes and still allows sufficient penetration of UV radiation to permit functional UV vision.

    Notes: Abstract The lakes of central Mexico have great cultural, economic, and biological value, but they are being degraded at an accelerating rate. We employed historical data on fish communities from 19 of these lakes and case studies of community responses to environmental degradation from four of the best-studied, Xochimilco, Cuitzeo, Chapala, and Pátzcuaro, to construct a preliminary index of biotic integrity (IBI). This IBI was designed to be an easily applied method for assessing lake ecosystem health and evaluating restoration efforts. The IBI had 10 metrics: number of total native species, number of common native species, number of native Goodeidae species, number of native Chirostoma species, number of native sensitive species, percent of biomass as tolerant species, percent of biomass as exotic species, percent of biomass as native carnivorous species, maximum standard length of native species, and percent of exotic invertebrate parasite species on or in native fishes. Initial applications of the index showed promise, accurately ranking the relative degradation of the four case-study lakes. Further tests of the index are warranted, and more data are needed to standardize sampling procedures, improve species classifications, and refine metric scoring criteria.

    Notes: Abstract Fish communities in large rivers are characterized by a high diversity, which reflects the structural diversity and habitat richness of inshore zones and connected floodplains. The connectivity of the different habitat elements in a broad spatio-temporal context, i.e., at various scales from catchment to microhabitat – and their nestedness – define the fitness of fish species both on the individual level (e.g., growth performances) and population level (i.e., population structure, mortality, etc.). Relevant spatial scales can be the whole river course in the case of some anadromous migrators or the availability of complementary microhabitat elements, e.g., during the early ontogeny of a species. The significance of connectivity at various scales from whole river to local reach have to be evaluated based on the requirements, reaction norms, and ecological flexibility of individual species. Integrity has to be evaluated in several respects: (1) with regard to population genetics over extensive biogeographicareas and in long time scales; (2) with regard to supplementary habitats in the course of the life cycle of individual species with ontogenetic habitat shifts and specific requirements during the reproductive phase; (3) with regard to longitudinal and lateral transport and exchange processes determining local habitat conditions and the food supply for fish. Due to these dependencies the status and condition of the fish fauna is a critical sensor of integrity at different scales and thus a good monitoring tool especially with regard to river engineering. The structure of the fish population – in particular the relative abundance of specifically adapted floodplain species – provides information on the overall conditions. For a more detailed evaluation the local distribution pattern of the fish fauna, population structure, seasonality, and growth performances of the early life history stages can indicate the quality and extent of connectedness at a finer scale and can be used to define management and engineering criteria.

    Notes: Abstract Fecundity and oocyte size of Oreochromis niloticus females were studied over a period of two annual cycles in six small agropastoral and three large hydroelectric reservoirs of Côte d'Ivoire. Important differences in fecundity and oocyte size were observed among populations and within the same population between successive years. An inverse correlation was found between size and number of oocytes produced by females. This inverse relationship occurred for a constant spawn weight during the first year of study, but not during the second year. Monthly mean residuals of regressions between fecundity and female body weight have shown a seasonal variation in fecundity. The peak of fecundity corresponded with the maximum resource availability and the flooding eminence, which may have a great impact on parents and offspring fitness.

    Notes: Abstract In an attempt to develop an efficient acoustic fish fence, we have designed an infrasound source able to generate large nearfield particle acceleration. The source generates water movements by means of two symmetrical pistons in an air-filled cylinder with 21 cm bore. The pistons are driven by eccentric coupling to an electric motor, with 5 cm p.p. amplitude. The piston movements are 180° out of phase. The piston reaction forces are thus opposed, leading to vibration free operation. The submergible infrasound source is operated freely suspended in the water mass. The emitted sound frequency is 11.8 Hz. The particle acceleration is about 0.01 m s−2 at a distance of 3 m, corresponding to the threshold intensity for deterring effects of infrasound on Atlantic salmon smolts. The sound source was employed to test the effect of intense infrasound on migrating European silver eels. Fish confined in a tank displayed startle behaviour and prolonged stress reactions, telemetrically monitored as tachycardia, in response to intense infrasound. The field tests were carried out in the River Imsa. A trap that catches all the descending eels is installed near the river mouth. The trap was separated in four equal sections. During the periods with infrasound exposure, the proportion of silver eels entering the section closest to the sound source was reduced to 43% of the control value. In the section closest to the opposite river bank, infrasound increased the proportion of trapped eels to 144% of the control values. This shift of the migrating eels away from the infrasound source was highly significant.

    Notes: Abstract The function of the fin digging behaviour in increasing food availability for the offspring was analysed in the convict cichlid, Cichlasoma (Archocentrus) nigrofasciatum. Consistent individual differences in the frequency of fin digging were found in the parental fish. Examination of the gastrointestinal tract of young revealed that higher frequency of parental fin digging was associated with higher consumption of large and more profitable prey (Diptera larvae), which inhabited deep horizons of the bottom substrate and possibly were difficult to access without parental assistance. Thus, parental fin digging was initially associated with a significant increase of the offspring growth rate. However, at later brood intervals, when parental care ceased, the young of the high-digging parents were characterised by a poorer consumption of small larvae that were most accessible for them without parental aid and represented an increasingly more important component of their ration than large larvae. Offspring of the low-digging parents, on the other hand, presumably as a result of their individual experience, showed a considerably better consumption of small larvae, increasing their growth rate. As a consequence, prior parental fin digging did not affect the offspring body size after independence. Thus, there exist pronounced individual differences and alternative parental styles in the convict cichlid.

    Notes: Abstract In a previous study we showed that many of the morphological features of the respiratory system of GH (growth hormone) transgenic Atlantic salmon are greater than similarly sized control salmon. Here we show that the manifestation of GH transgene is similar in two different lines of GH transgenic Pacific coho salmon, but that it is very different from that in the GH transgenic Atlantic salmon. The GH transgenic Pacific coho salmon do not have a larger gill surface area than similarly sized control fish.

    Notes: Abstract The structure and functioning of salt marsh fish communities in the overall ecology of southern African estuaries is poorly understood. This study compares the ichthyofauna associated with a salt marsh creek and eelgrass bed in an attempt to evaluate the relative importance of these habitats to fishes. Taylor's salt marsh creek and adjacent eelgrass bed in the Kariega Estuary were sampled twice per season between the winter of 1992 and the autumn of 1994. The average density and standing stock of fishes were found to be considerably higher in the eelgrass bed than in the intertidal creek. Both habitats had similar fish diversities but were dominated by different taxa, the most notable of which was the dominance of mugilids in the creek and their scarcity in the eelgrass. Taylor's intertidal creek and adjacent eelgrass beds were dominated by juvenile fish, with both habitats functioning as nursery areas for juvenile fish, albeit for totally different ichthyofaunal communities. The similar fish diversities but lower abundances in the intertidal creek compared to the eelgrass beds are in contrast to similar North American studies, and refute the hypothesis that intertidal salt marsh creeks have higher fish densities but lower diversities than eelgrass beds.

    Notes: Abstract Anadromous and resident forms of pond smelt, Hypomesus nipponensis, were found to occur in sympatry in Lake Ogawara, Japan. Profiles of Sr: Ca ratios from individuals could be grouped to two patterns (1) a ‘resident’ pattern with low Sr: Ca ratios from core to edge and (2) an ‘anadromous’ pattern with relatively low Sr: Ca ratios near the core with abrupt increases in ratios at a location approximately 0.3 mm from the core. Spawners smaller than 60 mm standard length (SL) were resident, between 60 to 80 mm were mixed resident and anadromous, and larger than 80 mm were anadromous. Anadromous individuals first migrated after 40 to 82 days from hatching (mean±sd, 59.1±13.5 d) and 14.6 to 30.9 mm SL (22.2±5.3 mm). There was no difference in SL between resident and anadromous individuals during age at first migration, suggesting that size may not be the mechanism for divergence of alternative life history styles.

    Notes: Abstract Pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus (=Colossoma mitrei), is a South American warm water fish species found in the temperature range of 15–35°C. The culture of a warm water species in temperate regions demands knowledge on its temperature requirements. Pacu introduction into the Israeli fish culture system is being considered. Temperature range in the region is 8–33°C, thus the minimum winter water temperatures might be a limiting factor. To determine what is the minimum temperature pacu would tolerate, and hence which overwintering operations in warm-temperate regions are required for this warm water species, low temperature tolerance tests in the laboratory and observations in the field were carried out. Laboratory experiments reducing temperature by 1–3°C per day were carried out with fish of 150–200 g, about the size pacu reach after one culture season. The field observations compared survival of two-year-old pacu of 1.3 kg mean weight overwintered in outdoors and in greenhouse ponds. For one-year-old fish 7.5°C was found to be the lower temperature tolerance limit. Two-year-old fish withstand short exposures to this temperature rather well and their lower tolerance limit might be lower. This indicates that in warm-temperate regions pacu should survive in outdoors ponds. In this case some loss of weight should be expected, and suspension of feeding when temperature drops below 16–18°C is recommended to avoid wasting feed that the fish will not consume anyway. To be in the safe side, inflow of the warmest available water into the ponds is recommended if maximum water temperature drops to 10°C or below. Overwintering in greenhouses or other heated facilities would be recommended if an exceptionally cold winter is expected and for regions with lower winter minimum temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract Atherina presbyter is a common fish off the Canary Islands. Age, growth, reproduction, and mortality of the species are studied based on sampling carried out from July 1995 to June 1996. The parameters of the total length–total weight relationship are: a=0.004521, and b=3.0771. Otoliths age readings indicate that the sampled population consists of four age groups (0–III years). The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for all individuals are: L∞=122 mm total length, k=0.79 year−1, and t0=−0.21 years. Individuals grow quickly in their immature first year, attaining approximately 60% of their maximum length. After the first year, the annual growth rate drops rapidly, because the energy is probably diverted to reproduction. It is a gonochoristic species with no evidence of sexual dimorphism. The gonad is present as a single diffuse testis in males and as a single discrete ovary in females. The overall ratio of males to females is not significantly different from 1:1. The reproductive period of the species is protacted (February to June). The peak of the reproductive effort occurs in April–May. The size at first maturity is 68 mm. The population is being heavily exploited.

    Notes: Abstract The codfish family, Gadidae, contains many vocal species. The sounds produced are species-characteristic and relatively simple. Unusually within this family, the haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus, produces a range of sounds in different contexts. Both male and female haddock produce short sequences of repeated ‘knocks’ during agonistic encounters. During the spawning season, however, male fish produce sounds which vary in their characteristics as courtship proceeds. The repertoire of the male fish consists of a graded series of sounds ranging from a short series of slowly repeated ‘knocks’ to long sounds of rapidly repeated ‘knocks’. The fastest sounds are heard as a continuous humming. Different behavioural acts leading up to the mating embrace are associated with particular sounds, the sounds becoming longer and faster as the level of arousal of the male increases. It is suggested that the sounds serve to bring male and female fish together in the same part of the ocean, and that the sounds also play a role in synchronising the reproductive behaviour of the male and female.

    Notes: Abstract This study quantified the air-breathing frequency (ABf in breaths h−1) and gill ventilation frequency (Vf in ventilations min−1) of tarpon Megalops atlanticusas a function of PO2, temperature, pH, and sulphide concentration. Ten tarpon held at normoxia at 22–33°C without access to atmospheric oxygen survived for eight days, and seven survived for 14 days (at which point the experiment was terminated) suggesting that the species is a facultative, rather than an obligate, air breather. At temperatures of 29°C and below ABf was highest and Vf was lowest at low oxygen partial pressures. Tarpon appear to switch from aquatic respiration to air breathing at PO2levels of roughly 40 torr. The gills were the primary organ for oxygen uptake in normoxia, and the air-breathing organ the primary mechanism for oxygen uptake in hypoxia. At 33°C, both ABf and Vf were elevated but highly variable, regardless of PO2. There were no mortalities in tarpon exposed to total H2S concentrations of 0–232 µM (0–150.9 µM H2S); however, high sulfide concentrations resulted in very high ABf and Vf near zero. Vf was reduced when pH was acidic. We conclude that air breathing provides an effective means of coping with the environmental conditions that characterize the eutrophic ponds and sloughs that juvenile tarpon typically inhabit.

    Notes: Abstract Archosargus probatocephalusin a Florida estuary was investigated to explore intraspecific variation in prey utilization and jaw biomechanics. Volumetric contribution of major prey types and seven biomechanical features of the oral jaws that characterize prey-capture and processing performance were contrasted between two locations within the estuary. At Mosquito Lagoon, where A. probatocephalusinhabited mostly oyster beds, mangroves and salt marshes, fish consumed mostly thick-shelled bivalves, gastropods, crabs, and tubiculous polychaetes and amphipods. In contrast, conspecifics at Indian River Lagoon that inhabited mostly seagrass beds and algal turf consumed predominantly algae, seagrass, epiphytic invertebrates and small bivalves and gastropods. Difference in magnitude of durophagy between locations was associated with differences in oral-jaw biomechanics. Analyses of covariance indicated that A. probatocephalusat Mosquito Lagoon had more massive jaw muscles and bones, than conspecifics at Indian River Lagoon. Variations in lever ratios for jaw-opening and jaw-closing between locations were not significant. It is hypothesized that intralocality differences in food habits have induced the development of feeding morphologies that enhance the ability of A. probatocephalusto successfully exploit locally dominant prey resources within the estuary. Plasticity of the feeding mechanism of A. probatocephalusmay buffer the species from the adverse effects of settling on heterogeneous habitats that contain variable prey resources such as those found within estuaries.

    Notes: Abstract A simple and rapid Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbant Assay (ELISA) is described and validated for testosterone, estradiol, and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20βP). A general procedure for preparation of the acetylcholinesterase labeled steroid is described which is applicable to any steroid. Use of acetylcholinesterase tracer increased the sensitivity of assay so that reliable measurements of each steroid could be achieved with only 10 μl of plasma. The ELISA was applied to measurement of all three steroids every hour for over 24 hours in a female trout using cannulation of the dorsal aorta. This high sampling frequency revealed several short-term (〈2 h) episodic pulses of testosterone and estradiol.

    Notes: Abstract Early embryonic development is dependent on proteins translated from messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) molecules of maternal origin and the embryonic genome. The present study examined the importance of maternal mRNA during early embryogenesis in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and developmentally, when the embryonic genome becomes transcriptionally active. To address the significance of maternal mRNA, eggs were exposed to the translational inhibitor cycloheximide (CHX) for 12 h post-fertilization. Concentrations of CHX beginning at 1 μM significantly delayed the initial stages of cleavage. Exposed embryos had only reached the 4-cell stage, while a significant proportion of the eggs treated with 0.1 μM CHX or no CHX (i.e., control) had attained the 8-cell stage. Treatment of fertilized eggs with the transcriptional inhibitor actinomycin D (AMD) was utilized to demonstrate when synthesis of embryonic mRNA begins. Rainbow trout eggs exposed to 16 μM AMD were unaffected after 12 h, but by 9 days post-fertilization had not developed the embryonic keel characteristic of the controls. To determine when transcriptional inhibition could first be demonstrated AMD exposed embryos were dissected free of the egg, between days 2 and 6 of incubation, and individual blastomeres prepared for diameter measurements. After 3 days of exposure to 16 μM AMD embryonic blastomeres were significantly larger than the control group (P〈0.05), which normally decrease significantly in size due to repeated cellular division. This showed that AMD interfered with nuclear transcription preventing the progression of cellular events necessary for normal cleavage, and indicates that transcriptional activation of the embryonic genome in rainbow trout occurs about 3 days post-fertilization.

    Notes: Abstract Liver, kidney, gill and olfactory epithelium cytosolic fractions of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were examined for glutathione S-transferase (GST) contents. Proteins retained on a glutathione (GSH)-affinity matrix were separated as monomers by reversed-phase HPLC and characterized by immunoblotting, mass spectrometry and partial amino acid sequence. For each organ concerned, a specific pattern of these proteins was determined and appeared similar for liver and kidney on one hand, and for gill and olfactory epithelium on the other hand. It was confirmed that the prominent hepatic GST is a class π enzyme, also constitutively expressed as a major isoform in the four organs studied. Moreover, a class π variant and two new class μ GST subunits were characterized in minor fractions. An unknown protein, which was found major in gills and olfactory epithelium, exhibited some characteristics of class θ GSTs. Occurrence of possible GSH-adduct formation observed on two distinct monomers in specific experimental conditions is discussed. These results and methods were used to investigate the effect of 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB), a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), on GST expression in trout liver. From HPLC-profiling, significant co-induction of the major class π and the two minor class μ GST subunits was observed in trout after waterborne exposure to TCB which was followed by a slight increase in 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) activity. The present work allows qualitative evaluation of the specific detoxification potential of rainbow trout. The use of HPLC-profiling of GSTs as a possible tool for the biomonitoring of polluted aquatic environment is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Free plasma thyroxine (FT4) levels were measured in coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, during parr-smolt transformation (smoltification) using an equilibrium dialysis system followed by a radioimmunoassay. The FT4 data were correlated to total plasma thyroxine (TT4), triiodothyronine (TT3), and growth hormone (GH). Plasma samples were taken weekly from early April to late May, when the salmon where released from the hatchery. Free thyroxine and GH levels increased gradually through smoltification. TT4 levels increased significantly in mid-April and in mid-May. TT3 levels increased in April and remained elevated until late-May after which they declined to the lowest levels. During the first increase in TT4 levels, FT4 levels remained low and TT3 levels did not increase until FT4 levels increased in late-April. In addition, after TT4 levels decreased in late May, FT4 levels remained elevated. These data show that there are differences between the plasma FT4 and TT4 profiles during smoltification. Nevertheless, regression analysis indicates that FT4 levels are highly correlated to the increases in the levels of GH (r=0.73) and TT4 (r=0.70). In addition, GH is less correlated to TT4 and TT3 (r=0.24 and r=−0.46, respectively) compared with FT4 (r=0.73), suggesting a close relationship between the increases of FT4 and GH. In addition, these data suggest that this method of measuring free plasma thyroxine may provide a new tool for studying the timing of thyroid hormone action and regulation during parr-smolt transformation in salmonids.

    Notes: Abstract To further examine the concept of egg quality and the physiology of stored salmonid eggs, we investigated the effects of different oxygen tensions on the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels of unfertilized, activated, and fertilized chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) eggs. The ATP levels of unfertilized chinook salmon eggs were 2.61±0.14 nmol ATP per egg (17.6±0.9 μmol l−1 relative to cell water) and ranged from 1.98 to 3.63 nmol ATP per egg. The ATP content of unfertilized eggs maintained at 10 °C under 100% O2, 21% O2, and 100% N2 remained unaltered throughout a 120 h storage period. Storing eggs under identical conditions at 20 °C (in an effort to speed egg metabolism and ATP turnover) resulted in significant O2-independent decreases in ATP levels. However, ATP levels of unfertilized eggs exposed to 1 mmol l−1 potassium cyanide (a potent inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation) at 10 °C were significantly decreased after 24 h and continued to decline throughout the 120 h maintenance period to about 30% of time=0 values. Maintenance with exogenous nutrients (5 mmol l−1 acetate plus 5 mmol l−1 pyruvate) over 120 h at 10 °C did not alter the ATP content of unfertilized eggs. Eggs activated by exposing them to 10 °C water for a few minutes showed a rapid decrease in ATP values, regardless of whether the eggs were fertilized or not. Following an initial ∼25% drop after fertilization, the ATP levels remained stable for the remainder (5 d) of the incubation period in eggs maintained in 10 °C water. Therefore, unfertilized chinook salmon egg ATP levels appear to be relatively stable and maintained by a low, cyanide-inhibitable metabolism. The stability of egg ATP levels may be one reason that salmonid eggs can be stored for several days while eggs from other fishes cannot.

    Notes: Abstract Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus L.) were fed over a three-week period with a commercial diet or one of seven casein-based diets. The latter were either lipid-free or supplemented with 50–200 g linseed oil kg−1 diet by dry weight, 160 g linseed oil and 40 g 14:0 or 160 g linseed oil and 40 g 16:0. Three fish having filled guts were sampled from each dietary group and analysed for ultrastructural changes in the pyloric caecum. Increasing the dietary lipid level increased the accumulation of lipid droplets in columnar absorptive enterocytes from about 9% of epithelial volume in fish fed a diet of 50 g linseed oil, to almost 61% in fish fed a diet of 200 g linseed oil. Replacing linseed oil in the diet with 14:0 (160 g linseed oil + 40 g 14:0 kg−1 diet) appeared to produce a smaller lipid loading (roughly 53%) but the difference was not statistically significant. However, replacing 40 g linseed oil with 40 g of 16:0 in the diet decreased lipid loading significantly to just under 10%. Epithelial damage to enterocytes was assessed using a ranking scale based on ultrastructural signs of cell and organelle swelling and degeneration. The extent of damage closely followed the level of lipid loading, being lowest in fish fed the lipid-free or low-lipid (damage index 0.07–0.13) diets, and highest in char maintained on a diet containing 200 g linseed oil (index 1.41). Replacing linseed oil with 14:0 (160 g linseed oil + 40 g 14:0) appeared to reduce the damage index to 0.77 but this was not significant. However, a significant reduction of the damage index to 0.27 was observed when linseed oil was replaced by 16:0. We conclude that higher dietary linseed oil promotes lipid droplet accumulation in enterocytes. The droplets are probably related to the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the lipid. Intracellular droplet formation and cellular damage are both reduced by adding saturated fatty acids to the diet. This could be related to disruptions in the lipoprotein assembly rate. The cellular damages observed with high lipid diets are likely to be pathological and may lead to intestinal malfunction and represent a major infection route for pathogenic bacteria.

    Notes: Abstract The interrelationships between the neuroendocrine and immune systems are becoming more understood, at least in mammalian systems. The most characterized of these relationships is that of hormonal signaling within the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. CNS-perceived signals stimulate the release of corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) which in turn stimulates the release of pituitary corticotropin (ACTH) and ultimately the release of adrenal-cortex-derived corticosteroids. We demonstrate that channel catfish peripheral blood mononuclear cells, a channel catfish B-cell line (1G8) and a T-cell line (28S.1), constitutively and in response to CRF, secrete a molecule that is reactive with a mammalian RIA for ACTH (irACTH). The T-cell line was the most responsive to CRH and may provide a valuable model for understanding the interrelationships between the neuroendocrine and immune systems in lower vertebrates. Lymphoid derived ACTH, or ACTH-like products, in fish, as well as higher vertebrates, may represent a paracrine or autocrine control on lymphocyte function and immune regulation.

    Notes: Abstract Triplicate groups of juvenile seabass (initial weight of 241 g) were fed during 13 weeks three isonitrogenous experimental diets containing different lipid levels, 12% (LL group), 21% (ML group) and 30% (HL group). At the end of the experiment, fish weight gain was similar among the 3 dietary groups. Intestinal brush border membranes were purified for each dietary group; one part of the brush border fraction was dedicated to enzyme assays, the remaining fraction being used for lipid extraction followed by fatty acid analysis. The fatty acid composition of the brush border membrane differed among the 3 groups, although the 3 experimental diets had the same fatty acid composition. The increase in dietary lipid level resulted in a lowering in (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) paralleled with an increase in monounsaturated fatty acid. A significant reduction in the brush border enzyme activities, namely alkaline phosphatase, aminopeptidase N, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase and maltase, was also observed with the elevation of the dietary lipid level. The change in activity of intestinal digestive enzymes, which are membrane-bound proteins, could be attributed to the modification of fatty acid composition and fluidity of the brush border membranes (BBM). Such lowering in PUFA and increase in monounsaturated fatty acid in BBM, concomitant with a decline in membrane enzymatic activity, has been described as a malnutrition indicator in mammals. It raises the question of possible disorders of gut functions in fish fed increasing lipid levels.

    Notes: Abstract The structural stability of fish myosin depends upon species and temperatures of water in which fish live. Primary, secondary, and quaternary structures of myosin heavy chain (MyHC) from three species of fish living at different temperature ranges have been compared with those of rabbit MyHC in order to investigate the differences in stability. Primary structure of MyHC, although being accessible for warm-water and cold-water fish (carp and walleye pollack), was not available in previous for tropical-water fish literature; so in this study primary structure of MyHC of the tropical-water fish amberjack has been determined by cloning and sequencing its cDNA. The MyHC has 1938 amino acid residues (AA), which are almost as much as as those of carp and walleye pollack. The amberjack MyHC is 91–95% homologous with other fish and rabbit MyHCs. There is a discernible difference between animal species with stable myosin rod (amberjack, carp, and rabbit) and walleye pollack with unstable rod. Stable rod species have a high probability of forming coiled-coil around the COOH-terminal end of the rod, while the pollack has a low coiled-coil formation probability. In addition, the average scores of the coiled-coil for myosin rod were rabbit (1.738) 〉 amberjack (1.691) 〉 carp (1.680) 〉 walleye pollack (1.674) which correlated exactly with the observed stability. The results suggest that coiled-coil forming ability, particularly around the COOH-terminal end, directs structural stability of fish myosin rod.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between stress protein (SP) levels and the hormonal stress response in salmonids was examined through the measurement of gill SP70 and SP30 levels together with plasma cortisol, glucose and ion concentrations, in response to handling stress (45 s holding in a net), intraperitoneal cortisol implants, and heat shock (+10 °C). Handling and cortisol implants resulted in increased plasma cortisol and glucose levels. Heat shock following handling reduced plasma [Na+] below that observed in response to the handling stress alone, and heat shock following cortisol implant significantly lowered both plasma [Cl−] and [Na+] below that of fish receiving the cortisol implant alone. Increased SP70 levels occurred 1 h following the 2 h +10 °C heat shock. Handling the fish prior to the application of heat shock suppressed the increase of SP70 levels in the gills. However, increased plasma cortisol concentrations alone did not attenuate gill tissue SP70 increase caused by heat shock. Physiological (10−7 M) and pharmacological (10−5 M) concentrations of adrenaline caused increased levels of SP70 in hepatocytes. Addition of the β-blocker propanolol blocked this response to adrenaline. The results indicate that handling procedures do not result in an increase of hsp30 or hsp70 and may suppress hsp synthesis under certain circumstances.

    Notes: Abstract Specimens of Astyanax scabripinnisfrom three different altitudes (1920, 1800 and 700 m) along the Ribeirão Grande stream in the Campos do Jordão region (São Paulo State, Brazil) were investigated. The same diploid number, 2n = 50, was detected in the three populations, with the following karyotypic constitution: 6M, 22SM, 10ST and 12A. The populations located at 1920 and 1800 m altitude presented a high incidence of B chromosomes varying in number (0–2), shape (meta- and submetacentrics), size (large and small) and sex-related frequency (they were more frequent among females). The two morphologically variant B chromosomes probably evolved from a metacentric macrochromosome, which is the most commonly observed B chromosome in several A. scabripinnispopulations.

    Notes: Abstract Wheat allelopathy has potential for weed suppression. Allelochemicals were identified in wheat seedlings, and they were exuded from seedlings into agar growth medium. p-Hydroxybenzoic, trans-p-coumaric, cis-p-coumaric, syringic, vanillic, trans-ferulic, and cis-ferulic acids and 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) were identified in both the shoots and roots of 17-day-old wheat seedlings and their associated agar growth medium. Wheat accessions with previously identified allelopathic activity tended to contain higher levels of allelochemicals than poorly allelopathic ones. The allelopathic compounds present in the shoots generally also were identified in the roots and in the agar medium. Allelochemicals were distributed differentially in wheat, with roots normally containing higher levels of allelochemicals than the shoots. When the eight allelochemicals were grouped into benzoic acid and cinnamic acid derivatives, DIMBOA, total coumaric, and total ferulic acids, the amount of each group of allelochemicals was correlated between the roots and the shoots. Most of the allelochemicals identified in the shoots and roots could be exuded by the living roots of wheat seedling into the agar growth medium. However, the amounts of allelochemicals in the agar growth medium were not proportional to those in the roots. Results suggest that wheat plants may retain allelochemicals once synthesized. The presence of allelochemicals in the agar growth medium demonstrated that wheat seedlings were able to synthesize and to exude phytotoxic compounds through their root system that could inhibit the root growth of annual ryegrass.

    Notes: Abstract A field trial was carried out to compare the transformations and plant uptake of urine N and S in a short-term pasture from within an arable/pasture ley rotation and a long-term pasture. Animal urine labelled with 15N and 35S was applied to microplots at both sites. These microplots were destructively sampled at various time intervals over 12 months and analysed for 15N and 35S. It is known that soil organic matter accumulates under short-term pastures compared with a long-term pasture in which accumulation and degradation are in balance. Consequently, it was hypothesised that immobilization of urine N and S is more intense in the short-term. However, in this study there was considerably less immobilization of 15N and 35S into soil organic forms under short-term pasture than long-term pasture. This was attributable to a greater pasture dry matter response to urine application under the short-term pasture (due to its inherently low N fertility) resulting in a greater plant uptake of 15N and 35S with less 15N and 35S consequently being available for immobilization. At both sites, all of the applied 35S was accounted for through plant uptake and recovery in the soil, but 21–48% of the 15N was unaccounted for and presumed to have been lost through gaseous emissions. It was concluded that accumulation of soil organic N and S under short-term pastures is likely to be attributable to turnover of plant residues (particularly root material) and does not appear to be related to immobilization in urine patches.

    Notes: Abstract Because many optimal control problems require solution using iterative procedures they fall naturally in the realm of 2-D systems where the two dimensions are response time horizon and iteration index, respectively. The paper uses this observation to employ 2-D systems theory, in the form of unit memory repetitive process techniques, to analyse local stability and convergence behaviour of a continuous optimal control algorithm based on dynamic system optimisation and parameter estimation. Existing work is extended to incorporate unmatched terminal constraints. Necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are obtained whose evaluation require the solution of a difficult eigenvalue problem. The paper shows how solutions can be achieved using numerical and graphical facilities of MATLAB.

    Notes: Abstract Fertile, green plants were regenerated from immature inflorescence explants from each of four Canadian wheat cultivars. The cultivars were representative of four classes of Canadian wheat. Explants from immature inflorescences of three size ranges were cultured on two types of media: MSI/MSR, which contains 1650 mg l-1 NH4NO3and sucrose as a carbon source, and BII/BIR, which contains 250 mg l-1 NH4NO3and maltose as a carbon source. Regeneration from all cultivars was significantly better on BII/BIR media than on MSI/MSR media. On BII/BIR media, `AC Karma', `Plenty', and `Fielder' gave the highest number of shoots per 10 explants, where the explants were derived from immature inflorescences 5.1 to 10.0 mm in length. 'Columbus' did not regenerate on MSI/MSR medium, and regenerated poorly on BII/BIR medium. Differences were found between cultivars with regard to the number of regenerant plants produced with the best treatments: `Plenty' produced 16.1 shoots per 10 explants, `AC Karma' 12.4, `Fielder' 6.4, and `Columbus' 2.2.

    Notes: Abstract A set of T. aestivum-L. elongatum chromosome substitution lines was tested for yellow rust resistance at the seedling stage. Inheritance of the resistance and esterase-5 (Est-5) variation were studied. The results demonstrated that L.elongatum carried a new gene(s) conferring yellow rust resistance. This gene was dominant and located on chromosome 3E of L. elongatum. The biochemical locus encoding Est-5was also located on chromosome 3E, and co-segregated with theYr gene(s) in the wheat background. The transmission frequencies of chromosome 3E in 3E(3A) × CS, 3E(3B) × CS and 3E(3D) × CS hybrids were scored.None of the hybrids transmitted the alien chromosome at thetheoretical maximum rate, but the transmission frequencies ofchromosome 3E in F2 populations of 3E(3A) × CS and 3E(3D) × CS were significantly higher than in thatof 3E(3B) × CS.
