Notizen: Summary This paper reviews the biogeography, geographic variation, and habitat characteristics of the Amazilia Hummingbird (Amazilia amazilia). Based on morphological features, habitat preferences, and bioacoustics, I propose that the currently recognized subspeciesA. a. alticola should be regarded as a species distinct fromA. amazilia. Synapomorphic characters found in both taxa indicate membership of the same superspecies, together with the Colombian speciesA. castaneiventris. Considering the distributional focus ofA. alticola in the Andes of southern Ecuador, the English species name Loja Hummingbird is suggested.

Notizen: Summary A discriminant analysis of the call structure completely separates threeCorvus taxa (levaillantii andjaponensis of the ‘macrorhynchos group’,splendens) inhabiting the southern slopes of the Himalayas (Nepal, Kashmir). The acoustic differences are considered taxonomically relevant, indicating species boundaries. Therefore the Jungle Crows of lower and upper Nepal (contact zone at around 2,000 m) are assigned to two biospecies (C. japonensis andC. levaillantii), as is consistent with morphological, ecological and parasitological data. It appears possible to extrapolate the findings regarding call structure to the systematics of other ‘macrorhynchos’ populations as distant as the Russian Far East, and those regarding mallophagan parasites to large areas of SE Asia; regarding the vocal characteristics, however, further clarification is needed.

Notizen: Abstract The peformance of the parasitoid Anagyrus kamali Moursi [Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae], as a function of host density, temperature, and photoperiod was investigated with the objective to optimize a mass-rearing system in the context of a biological control program. The number of hosts parasitized at densities varying from 2–100 hibiscus mealybug (HMB), Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green [Homoptera: Pseudococcidae], corresponded to a type II-III functional response in fixed-time conditions and a type III in variable-time conditions. Twenty-six percent of the oviposited eggs led to progeny emergence with a sex ratio of 0.49±0.102 (M/F), regardless of host density. Fecundity and oviposition period under six abiotic combinations (i.e., two temperatures (26±2 °C and 32±2 °C) and three photoperiods (L0:D24, L12:D12, L24:D0)) were measured. Lifetime fecundity and reproductive life were significantly affected by temperature and photoperiod conditions. Optimum female parasitoid lifetime fecundity was attained at 26±2 °C, L0:D24 with an average of 116.1±17.43 eggs. At 32±2 °C, L24:D0 and L12:D12, an average of 79.4±34.57 and 85.8±35.81 eggs were laid, respectively. Reproductive longevity was maximal at 26±2 °C, L0:D24 with 12±4.85 days of oviposition. Because the parasite A. kamali can be reared optimally without light, this may save tremendous energy costs.

Notizen: Abstract Temperature dependencies were established for the egg-to-mummy and mummy-to-adult phases, for mummy mortality, and for parasitism of Aphidius ervi Haliday, Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani-Perez, and Praon volucre (Haliday) (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae), three parasitoids of Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera, Aphididae), at 8 °C, 12 °C, 16 °C, 20 °C, and 25 °C on winter wheat (cv. Haven). A physiological model described temperature-dependent development over the full temperature range, whereas a linear model was fitted for data above 8 °C and used to estimate the lower temperature thresholds and day-degrees (° D) required for development. The thresholds for A. ervi were 2.2 °C for egg-mummy development and 6.6 °C for mummy-adult development, those for A. rhopalosiphi were 4.5 °C and 7.2 °C, and those for P. volucre were 3.8 °C and 5.5 °C. The time to develop into mummies and adults differed significantly between the three species: A. ervi development into mummies required an average of 159 ° D, while development into adults took an average of 73 ° D. The corresponding average times required for A. rhopalosiphi and P. volucre to develop mummies were 124° D and 126° D, while their development into adults required an average of 70° D and 150° D, respectively. Mummy mortality was 25–35% at 8 °C and less at the higher temperatures tested, but began to increase again at 25 °C, showing a quadratic relationship between mortality and temperature. Parasitization was very low or, in the case of P. volucre, absent up to 12 °C and thereafter increased with increasing temperature. The relationship between parasitization, recorded as percent aphids mummified, and temperature was linear at the temperatures tested and depended on species. A. ervisuperparasitized 11.1% aphids at 20 °C and 16.6% aphids at 25 °C, whereas superparasitism was low in A. rhopalosiphi and absent in P. volucre. From 16 °C to 25 °C the P. volucre sex ratio increased. For A. ervi and A. rhopalosiphi there was no trend with temperature, but at 20 °C and 25 °C it was close to even. Field data for 1996 and 1997 allowed for a comparison of actual and expected emergence of overwintering mummies. In both years, parasitoids were predicted to have emerged from overwintering mummies well in advance of the onset of aphid infestation, and more than a month earlier than the first parasitized aphids were found in winter wheat. Observations from trap plants in other crops supported the predictions of the models. Other factors that can affect biological control by cereal aphid parasitoids are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The stability constants of thorium(IV) hydrolysis species have been measured at15, 25, and 35°C (in 1.0 mol dm−3 NaClO4) using both potentiometry and solventextraction. The results indicate the presence of the monomeric speciesTh(OH)3+, Th(OH)2+ 2, Th(OH)+ 3, and Th(OH)4, in addition to the polymericspecies Th4(OH)8+ 8 and Th6(OH)9+ 15. The polymeric species were found to beimportant, although the total thorium concentration was limited to 0.01–0.1mmol-dm−3. The solvent extraction measurements required the use of acetylacetone. As such, the stability constants of thorium(IV) with acetylacetone were alsomeasured using both potentiometry and solvent extraction. All logarithms of thestability constants were found to be linear functions of the reciprocal absolutetemperature indicating that ΔH o and ΔSo of reaction are both independent oftemperature (over the temperature range examined in the study).

Notizen: Abstract A flow-through electrical conductance cell was assembled in order to measuremolar conductances of dilute aqueous electrolytes with a high degree of accuracyat high temperatures and pressures. The design of the cell is based on the conceptdeveloped at the University of Delaware and built in 1995, with modificationsthat will allow the cell to operate at much higher temperatures (to 600°C) andpressures (to 300 MPa). At present, the cell has been tested successfully bymeasuring aqueous (10−4-10−3 mol-kg−1) solutions of LiCl, NaCl, and KCl attemperatures 25–410°C and pressures 9.8–33 MPa. The results are in goodagreement with reported values, including those measured with the Delawareflow-through cell. These new results are also complementary to our previousresults, which were measured with a static high-pressure cell. Measurements attemperatures near the critical point of water (374°C, 22.1 MPa) require the useof lower solution concentrations that were unachievable in the past with thestatic cell.

Notizen: Abstract The conjugacy mapping rel. to a complete quadrangle in a Pappian projective plane of characteristic ≠2 is constructed by using a bijection of the line set onto the bundle of conics through the diagonal points of the quadrangle. The inversion with center O of the inversion circle going through the point P in the Euclidean plane proves to be the product of the reflection at OP and the affine restriction of the conjugacy mapping rel. to the quadrangle having P as one of its vertices and O together with the circular points at infinity as diagonal points.

Notizen: Abstract The relationships between diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) in surface sediments of lakes and summer air temperature, pH and total organic carbon concentration (TOC) were explored along a steep climatic gradient in northern Sweden to provide a tool to infer past climate conditions from sediment cores. The study sites are in an area with low human impact and range from boreal forest to alpine tundra. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) constrained to mean July air temperature and pH clearly showed that diatom community composition was different between lakes situated in conifer-, mountain birch- and alpine-vegetation zones. As a consequence, diatoms and multivariate ordination methods can be used to infer past changes in treeline position and dominant forest type. Quantitative inference models were developed to estimate mean July air temperature, pH and TOC from sedimentary diatom assemblages using weighted averaging (WA) and weighted averaging partial least squares (WA-PLS) regression. Relationships between diatoms and mean July air temperature were independent of lake-water pH, TOC, alkalinity and maximum depth. The results demonstrated that diatoms in lake sediments can provide useful and independent quantitative information for estimating past changes in mean July air temperature (R2 jack = 0.62, RMSEP = 0.86 °C; R2 and root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) based on jack-knifing), pH (R2 jack = 0.61, RMSEP = 0.30) and TOC (R2 jack = 0.49, RMSEP = 1.33 mg l-1). The paper focuses mainly on the relationship between diatom community composition and mean July air temperature, but the relationships to pH and TOC are also discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Ideas about the natural world are intertwined with the personalities, practices, and the workplaces of scientists. The relationships between these categories are explored in the life of the taxonomist William Steel Creighton. Creighton studied taxonomy under William Morton Wheeler at Harvard University. He took the rules he learned from Wheeler out of the museum and into the field. In testing the rules against a new situation, Creighton found them wanting. He sought a new set of taxonomic principles, one he eventually found in Ernst Mayr's Systematics and the Origin of Species. Mayr's ideas tied together a number of themes running through Creighton's life: the need for a revised taxonomy, the emphasis on fieldwork, and the search for a new power center for ant taxonomy after Wheeler died. Creighton's adoption of Mayr's ideas as part of his professional identity also had very real implications for his career path: field studies required long and intensive studies, and Creighton would always be a slow worker. His method of taxonomy contrasted sharply not only with Wheeler's but also with two of his younger colleagues, William L. Brown and E. O. Wilson, who took over Wheeler's spot at Harvard in 1950. The disputes between these men over ant taxonomy involved, in addition to questions of technical interest, questions about where and how best to do taxonomy and who could speak withthe most authority. Creighton's story reveals how these questions are interrelated. The story also reveals the importance of Mayr's book for changes occurring in taxonomy in the middle of the twentieth century.

Notizen: Abstract A fiber optic low-coherence sensor based on the spectral shift of tantalum pentoxide thin films for absolute temperature sensing up to 650°C is described. A tantalum pentoxide single layer was deposited directly onto the cleaved end-face of a single mode optical fibre and was illuminated with an super luminescence diode (SLD) source through a directional coupler. Interference fringes of the film on reflection were obtained within the optical bandwidth of the SLD using an optical spectrum analyser. The spectral shift versus temperature rise showed no turning points and the output was unambiguous, linear, monotonic and gave about 0.016 nm wavelength shift in the spectrum per°C. A semi-empirical calibration procedure based on the refractive index (n) and thickness (l) of the tantalum pentoxide film for absolute thermometric measurements is described.

Notizen: Abstract A new method of simultaneous remote sensing of atmospheric wind and temperature by a ultraviolet Rayleigh lidar is described. This technique uses two narrowband filters located at either side of the wings of the Rayleigh backscatter spectrum to analyze Rayleigh backscattering signals. These filters are selected to be greatly sensitive to both velocity and temperature. By measuring the ratio and the sum of the two normalized filtered signals, the line-of-sight wind velocity and temperature profiles can be retrieved. A lidar system is proposed for the wind velocity and temperature measurements in the middle atmosphere, and the simulation results show that the accuracies of velocity and temperature are about 1 m/s and 2 K at the height of 30 km, respectively. The influence of aerosol component has been estimated for clear weather conditions, and with an uncertainty of aerosol component of 15% the errors are about 0.1 m/s and 2 K above the troposphere, respectively.

Notizen: Abstract  Geophysical investigations using 2-D DC resistivity were carried out on old parts of two similar landfills, with waste of different ages. The data sets, which included high data density in both vertical and horizontal directions, were interpreted with 2-D smoothness constrained inversion. The landfills were excavated after the surveying. The objective was to test the capability of the resistivity method as a pre-characterization technique. The objectives were only partially fulfilled. First, the moisture content was the parameter that appeared to exert the dominant control over the resistivity distribution of the landfill. The most important potential information that can be recovered is, therefore, an indication of the waste piles hydraulics. Second, it was neither possible to estimate the amount of recoverable soils, nor to correlate the type of waste with the resistivity models. However, discrete anomalies were identified, and if specific materials are searched for, the resistivity models indicate possible places to search.

Notizen: Abstract. Three rat BV13S1 alleles (T-cell receptor β-chain variable gene 13) were characterized by new BV13S1-allele specific monoclonal antibodies (18B1 and 17D5) and sequence analysis of expressed and genomic BV13S1. Two alleles were functional and designated BV13S1A1 present in strains LEW, BUF, PVG, and BV13S1A2 present in BN and WF. Their products differed by six amino acids, two of them in complementarity-determing region (CDR)1 and one in CDR2. A third nonfunctional allele, BV13S1A3P, was found in strains F344 and DA. Apart from a single nucleotide insertion, it was identical to BV13S1A2. All 12 rat strains tested showed association of TCRBC1 with BV8S2/4 alleles but not with the BV13S1 alleles, which may reflect a different gene order of the rat BV compared to mouse. BV13S1A1-encoded T-cell receptors (TCRs) which bind both monoclonal antibody (mAb) 18B1 and mAb 17D5 are over-represented in the CD4 lymphocyte subset. BV13S1A2-encoded TCRs which are stained by mAb 18B1 but not by mAb 17D5 show a slight CD8-biased expression. Preferential usage of BV13S1A1-positive TCRs by CD4 but not by CD8 cells in (LEW×WF)F1 hybrids and cosegregation of BV13SA1 and increased frequency of BV13S1 TCR-positive CD4 cells in a (LEW×BN)×BN backcross suggest structural differences of the two allelic products as the reason for their contrasting CD4/CD8 subset bias.

Notizen: AbstractPulmonary fibrosis is characterized by excessive extracellular matrix deposition with concomitant loss of gas exchange units, and endothelin-1 (ET-1) has been implicated in its pathogenesis. Increased levels of ET-1 from tissues and bronchoalveolar lavage have been reported in patients with pulmonary fibrosis and in animal models after intratracheal bleomycin. We characterized the cellular distribution of alveolar ET receptors by immunohistochemistry in bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in the rat and determined the regulation by bleomycin of ET receptor mRNA expression in isolated alveolar macrophages and rat lung fibroblasts. We found significant increases in the numbers of fibroblasts and macrophages at day 7 compared to day 28 and control animals. ETB receptor immunoreactivity was observed on fibroblasts and invading monocytes. Isolated fibroblasts expressed both ETA and ETB receptor mRNA, and ETA receptor mRNA was upregulated by bleomycin. Isolated resident alveolar macrophages expressed neither ETA nor ETB receptor mRNA which were also not induced by bleomycin. We conclude that, while ETB receptor stimulation of fibroblasts and monocytes recruited during bleomycin-induced lung injury exerts antagonistic effects on fibroblast collagen synthesis, the observed increase in the number of fibroblasts in vivo and upregulation of fibroblast ETA receptor mRNA by bleomycin in vitro point to a predominance of the profibrotic effects of ET receptor engagement.

Notizen: Abstract In order to elucidate the effects of temperature and photoperiod on the quality and quantity of plant root exudates, a Japanese cucumber (Cucumis sativus, cv. Shougoin-Aonaga-Fushinari) was grown hydroponically in growth chambers under controlled temperature and photoperiod conditions with or without the addition of activated charcoal (AC) to the nutrient solutions. Fresh AC was used to trap the organic compounds exuded from cucumber roots every two weeks. Cucumber plants without AC were severely retarded in root growth and in the accumulation of dry matter, especially at high temperature and long photoperiod, compared to those with AC. The growth inhibitors, adsorbed on the AC or accumulated in the nutrient solution without AC, were extracted by organic solvents and analyzed by GC-MS. Benzoic acid and its derivatives, cinnamic acid derivatives, and fatty acids were identified. The rate of root exudation in vegetative and reproductive stages for some of these organic acids increased with the elevation of temperature and the elongation of photoperiod, and the mean rate was two or more times higher than the minimum exudation at low temperature with short photoperiod. Some of the identified compounds significantly inhibited the germination and/or root growth of lettuce and cucumber.

Notizen: Abstract Moderate temperatures or low concentrations of denaturants diminish the catalytic activity of some enzymes before spectroscopic methods indicate protein unfolding. To discriminate between possible reasons for the inactivation of ribonuclease A, we investigated the influence of temperature and guanidine hydrochloride on its proteolytic susceptibility to proteinase K by determining the proteolytic rate constants and fragment patterns. The results were related to changes of activity and spectroscopic properties of ribonuclease A. With thermal denaturation, the changes in activity and in the rate constants of proteolytic degradation coincide and occur slightly before the spectroscopically observable transition. In the case of guanidine hydrochloride-induced denaturation, however, proteolytic resistance of ribonuclease A initially increases accompanied by a drastic activity decrease far before unfolding of the protein is detected by spectroscopy or proteolysis. In addition to ionic effects, a tightening of the protein structure at low guanidine hydrochloride concentrations is suggested to be responsible for ribonuclease A inactivation.

Notizen: Abstract Tomicus species (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) are serious pests of pines with a wide distribution in Europe, Asia and America. In Yunnan, south-western China,T. piniperda has destroyed more than 0.5 million ha ofPinus yunnanensis in the past 15 years. A blue stain fungus belonging to the genusLeptographium is associated with both the shoot-feeding and trunk-attacking stages of the beetle's life cycle. The fungus is morphologically similar to the anamorph ofOphiostoma crassivaginatum and toL. pyrinum, which are both characterised by short robust conidiophores and hyphae covered by a granular layer. Both these species have been isolated from conifers and are associated with insects. After comparing the fungus fromT. piniperda with similarLeptographium species, using light and scanning electron microscopy, we concluded that it represents a new taxon, which is described here asL. yunnanense sp. nov.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of light and temperature conditions on the maintenance of some red microalgae (order Porphyridiales) in collections were studied. Periodical subculturing on solid and liquid media was used for maintenance. Halophilic species P. aeruginosa, P. cruentum, and P. sordidum were lost in 2.5 months if kept in darkness. The viability of algae in the dim light slightly declined in 4–5 months and was species-dependent. The results were compared with earlier obtained data on mesophilic Chlorococcales. For the green algae, darkness proved to be the optimal condition, while their viability markedly decreased at light. It was suggested that this discrepancy was caused by the presence of phycobiliproteins in the cells of red algae. Dim light conditions are optimal for the synthesis of phycobiliproteins, which are rapidly destroyed in darkness, thus leading to cell death.

Notizen: Abstract Field and laboratory studies were carried out between 1995 and 1997 on four populations of Diaptomus leptopus found in seasonally temporary, occasionally temporary, and a permanent environment to assess the relative importance of photoperiod and temperature regimes versus other proximate local cues in inducing diapause egg production. Patterns of diapausing and subitaneous egg production were determined by observation of individual females bearing clutches that were produced in the field. A laboratory common-garden experiment was performed to assess the effects of four different regimes of temperature and photoperiod on the induction of diapause. Patterns of diapausing egg production differed among ponds: diapause occurred early in the seasonally temporary environment and occurred rarely in the permanent environment. In the common-garden experiment, populations exhibited substantial changes in the onset of diapause when compared to patterns found under field conditions. These results provide indirect evidence that the different populations respond to available cues of environmental change in different ways in nature, or that environmental cues vary among habitats.

Notizen: Abstract The seasonal variation in length of the most abundant copepod species in the lagoon of Venice were compared and the relative influence of temperature, chlorophyll concentration and salinity examined. Temperature seems to be the primary factor influencing copepod body length in the lagoon of Venice, but the different species vary markedly in their response. Calanoid copepods (Acartia clausi, A. tonsa, Paracalanus parvus and Centropages ponticus) showed a more definite trend of size variation with temperature than the cyclopoids (Oithona nana and O. similis) and the harpacticoid Euterpina acutifrons. The size of the poecilostomatoids Oncaea media and O. subtilis was not affected by temperature, and was almost constant over time. Differences in the metabolic rates, longevity and specialization of calanoid, cyclopoid and harpacticoid copepods could explain their different responses to temperature.

Notizen: Abstract The word ``deme'' was coined by the botanists J.S.L. Gilmour and J.W.Gregor in 1939, following the pattern of J.S. Huxley's ``cline''. Its purposewas not only to rationalize the plethora of terms describing chromosomaland genetic variation, but also to reduce hostility between traditionaltaxonomists and researchers on evolution, who sometimes scorned eachother's understanding of species. A multi-layered system of compoundterms based on deme was published by Gilmour and J. Heslop-Harrison in1954 but not widely used. Deme was adopted with a modified meaning byzoologists leading the evolutionary synthesis – Huxley, Simpson, Wright, and Mayr. Connections are shown between Gilmour's ideas around definingthe deme, his role in founding the Systematics Association, and his chapter``Taxonomy and Philosophy'' in the book The New Systematics. Thishistorical episode raises questions about the role of carefully-definedwords in scientific practice.

Notizen: Abstract The pharmacological inactivation of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD)represents one strategy to improve 5-FU therapy, which historically hasbeen associated with unpredictable pharmacological behavior andtoxicity. This is principally due to high interpatientdifferences in the activity of DPD, the enzyme that mediates theinitial and rate-limiting step in 5-FU catabolism. Byinactivating DPD and suppressing the catabolism of 5-FU,eniluracil has dramatically altered the pharmacological profileof 5-FU. The maximum tolerated dose of oral 5-FU given with oraleniluracil (1.0 to 25 mg/m2) is substantially lower thanconventional 5-FU doses. In the presence of eniluracil, bioavailability of 5-FU has increased to approximately 100%, thehalf-life is prolonged to 4 to 6 hours, and systemic clearanceis reduced 〉 20-fold to values comparable the glomerularfiltration rate (46 to 58 mL/min/m2). Renal excretion(∼ 45% to 75%), instead of DPD-related catabolism, is theprincipal route of elimination of oral 5-FU given witheniluracil. Chronic daily administration of oral 5-FU 1.0mg/m2 twice daily with eniluracil 20 mg twice dailyproduces 5-FU steady-state concentrations (8–38 ng/mL) similarto those achieved with protracted intravenous administration onclinically relevant dose-schedules. On a daily × 5regimen, higher 5-FU AUC values are related to neutropenia, whereas elevated 5-FU AUC and steady-state concentrations arerelated to diarrhea when oral 5-FU is given daily with eniluracilon a chronic schedule. The pharmacokinetic behavior of oraleniluracil is similar to that for oral 5-FU. Administration ofeniluracil 10 to 20 mg twice daily completely inactivates DPDactivity both in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and incolorectal tumor tissue, and prolonged inhibition of DPD afterdiscontinuation of eniluracil treatment has been noted. In thepresence of eniluracil, oral administration of 5-FU is feasibleand variation in 5-FU exposure is reduced, with the anticipationof further reduction in variation as dosing guidelines based onrenal function are formulated.

Notizen: Abstract The response of selected rotifers and cladocerans to Microcystis aeruginosa, offered as colonies and single cells, was compared to that on a diet of Chlorella vulgaris using the life table demography approach. The test zooplankton species were Simocephalus vetulus, Daphnia carinata, Moina macrocopa, Scapholeberis kingi, Ceriodaphnia cornuta, Brachionus calyciflorus and Hexarthra mira. To detect the development of resistance to toxins from Microcystis in zooplankton, in addition to the laboratory cultured strain of Ceriodaphnia cornuta, another strain of the same species was also used (designated as C. cornuta 2, this was collected from a pond containing Microcystis and cultured in the laboratory on Chlorella for a few weeks prior to experimentation). Experiments were conducted at 20 °C and 30 °C. Survivorship was high on Chlorella in most species but low on diets of Microcystis. Except for C. cornuta 2, S. kingi and S. vetulus, all other test species were adversely affected by Microcystis. The ability to utilise Microcystis improved at 30 °C in M. macrocopa, D. carinata and H. mira. The longest mean lifespan was recorded for C. cornuta 2 (25.3 ± 4.86 d) and the lowest for B. calyciflorus (0.58 ± 0.05 d). The highest net reproductive rate was observed for C. cornuta 1 (44.9 ± 4.88) and the longest generation time of 26.6 ± 2.13 d for S. vetulus. Among the cladocerans that showed positive values of population growth rate (r), M. macrocopa had the highest of 0.96 ± 0.04 per day.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of environmental parameters on the growthof Porphyra linearis gametophytes was examinedunder controlled conditions, and related to themultilinear regression growth model recently developedfor this seaweed under coastal conditions in theeastern Mediterranean. Growth chambers, a gradienttable, special culture devices and analytical methodswere combined for this culture study. The major factors significantly controlling thegrowth rate of the P. linearis gametophytein glass dishes were: photoperiod, temperature, agein culture, photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), salinityand water dynamics. Maximal growth occurred underdaylength of 12 h, medium temperature (15–20 °C), low PPF (70–140 μmol photon m-2s-1), ambient salinity (30–40 ppt), 1–3 h ofdaily air exposure, and water velocity of 4 cm s-1.Photosynthesis and respiration rates weredominantly affected by daylength and temperature, while the concentration of pigments was dominantlyaffected by PPF and temperature. These conditions correspond well to the optimalnatural growth environment of this local species andare in agreement with the optimum estimated throughthe recently developed outdoor mathematical growthmodel.

Notizen: Abstract Variations in growth and survival of hatchery-reared post-metamorphicjuveniles of great scallop Pecten maximus prompted anexamination of settlement and postlarval development. The effects ofseawater flow and temperature on great scallop metamorphosis andpostlarvae were studied over a 4–5 week period. In allexperiments, and regardless of environmental conditions, great scallopmetamorphosed after a 2–3 week period with values of 35 to70%. Subsequently, spat numbers increased slightly. Spatmortality generally occurred from the third week onward and reachedlevels as high as 30% by the fifth week under standardconditions. At 20 °C, however, 60% mortality levels wererecorded. Differences in spat growth rate, ranging from 37 to 45 μmday−1, were noticed at different seawater flow ratesbut no clear tendency could be discerned. Temperature affected spatgrowth with an increase in size from 24 μm day−1 at15 °C to 35 μm day−1 at 18 °C. Conversely, growth was suppressed at 20 °C (14 μm day−1).For optimal metamorphosis and postlarval development in great scallop, aseawater flow of 4.3 L h−1 per sieve and a temperatureof 15 °C are recommended.

Notizen: Abstract Previous studies have shown the taxonomic value of vocal repertoires and hand (volar) pad characteristics in the classification of cryptic nocturnal primates such as bush babies. However, no study included quantitative comparisons within the geographical range of any one species. We investigated levels of intraspecific variation in calls and hand pad characteristics of the southern lesser bush baby (Galago moholi), using the northern lesser bush baby (Galago senegalensis) for interspecific comparisons. Examination of calls recorded from different regions along a transect of 1500 km across southern Africa revealed low levels of intraspecific variation in Galago moholi, whereas comparisons with homologous call-types in G. senegalensis revealed them to be significantly different. Volar pad measurements across the ranges of both species also showed low levels of intraspecific variation and relatively high interspecific variation. These findings demonstrate that vocal and volar pad characteristics can be used as consistent measures of difference between species that look almost identical. These methods provide a practical means of distinguishing between cryptic species, whether in the field, in captivity, or, in the case of volar pads, of preserved specimens.

Notizen: Abstract The genus Microcebus (mouse lemurs) are the smallest extant primates. Until recently, they were considered to comprise two different species: Microcebus murinus, confined largely to dry forests on the western portion of Madagascar, and M. rufus, occurring in humid forest formations of eastern Madagascar. Specimens and recent field observations document rufous individuals in the west. However, the current taxonomy is entangled due to a lack of comparative material to quantify intrapopulation and intraspecific morphological variation. On the basis of recently collected specimens of Microcebus from 12 localities in portions of western Madagascar, from Ankarana in the north to Beza Mahafaly in the south, we present a revision using external, cranial, and dental characters. We recognize seven species of Microcebus from western Madagascar. We name and describe 3 spp., resurrect a previously synonymized species, and amend diagnoses for Microcebus murinus (J. F. Miller, 1777), M. myoxinus Peters, 1852, and M. ravelobensis Zimmermann et al., 1998.

Notizen: Abstract Our goal was to determine phylogenetic relationships among geographically and taxonomically distinct haplotypes of spider monkeys (Ateles) based on DNA sequence variation for the mitochondrial DNA control region and cytochrome c oxidase subunit II gene. We obtained samples from most previously recognized subspecies of Ateles, ranging from Central America throughout the Amazon Basin, to determine phylogenetic relationships among racially recognized groups. Comparison of DNA sequences using both parsimony analysis and genetic distance analysis produced phylogenetic relationships that were very similar for each genetic region. We analyzed the phylograms produced, along with associated bootstrap support, confidence probabilities, and genetic distances between taxonomic groups, to identify four monophyletic species of Ateles: Ateles paniscus, composed of haplotypes from the northeastern Amazon Basin; A. belzebuth in the southern Amazon Basin; A. hybridus, located primarily along the Magdalena River valley of Colombia; and A. geoffroyi, which includes two former species: A. geoffroyi and A. fusciceps. This arrangement is contradictory to long-held taxonomies of Ateles based on pelage variation and is similar to a recent analysis based on craniodental variation. Results of this investigation suggest patterns of gene flow, evolutionary relationships, and speciation patterns that are more plausible than previous pelage-based taxonomies, which required seemingly impossible patterns of gene flow. Conservation efforts aimed at protecting Ateles, one of the Neotropics most endangered genera, will also benefit from the findings presented in this paper.

Notizen: Abstract Advertisement calls are often important noninvasive tools for discriminating cryptic species and for assessing specific diversity and speciation patterns in nature. We investigated the contribution of these calls to uncover specific diversity in nocturnal Malagasy lemurs. We compared sexual advertisement and predator advertisement calls of two mouse lemur species, western gray and eastern rufous mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus and M. rufus, respectively) living in two contrasting habitats (dry deciduous vs. rain forest), and analyzed them statistically. Both species emitted several highly variable whistle calls in the context of predator-avoidance. Intrapopulation variation was high and overlapped interspecific variation. Sexual advertisement calls, given in the mating context, displayed a totally distinct, species-specific acoustic structure. Whereas gray mouse lemurs produced rapidly multifrequency modulated, long trill calls, rufous mouse lemurs gave slowly frequency-modulated short chirp calls. Our results suggest specific status for gray and rufous mouse lemurs and indicate the importance of predation and social needs in shaping vocal communication.

Notizen: Abstract Organisms and parts of an organism like eggs or individual cells developing in colder environments tend to grow bigger. A unifying explanation for this Bergmann's rule extended to ectotherms has not been found, and whether this is an adaptive response or a physiological constraint is debated. The dependence of egg and clutch size on the mother's temperature environment were investigated in the yellow dung fly Scathophaga stercoraria. Smaller eggs were laid at warmer temperatures in the field and the laboratory, where possible confounding variables were controlled for. As clutch size at the same time was unaffected by temperature, this effect was not due to a trade-off between egg size and number. Temperature-dependent egg sizes even persisted within individuals: when females were transferred to a cooler (warmer) environment, they laid third-clutch eggs that were larger (smaller) than their first-clutch eggs. The fitness consequences of these temperature-mediated egg sizes were further investigated in two laboratory experiments. Neither egg and pre-adult survivorship nor larval growth rate were maximized, nor was development time minimized, at the ambient temperature corresponding to the mother's temperature environment. This does not support the beneficial acclimation hypothesis. Instead, this study yielded some, but by no means conclusive indications of best performance by offspring from eggs laid at intermediate temperatures, weakly supporting the optimal temperature hypothesis. In one experiment the smaller eggs laid at 24°C had reduced survivorship at all ambient temperatures tested. Smaller eggs thus generally performed poorly. The most parsimonious interpretation of these results is that temperature-mediated variation in egg size is a maternal physiological response (perhaps even a constraint) of unclear adaptive value.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To evaluate (1) allometric scaling of systemic clearance (CL)using unbound drug concentration, (2) the potential usage of brainweight (BRW) correction in allometric scaling of both CL and oralclearance (CL/F). Methods. Human clearance was predicted allometrically (CLu = a ·Wbiv) using unbound plasma concentration for eight Parke-Daviscompounds and 29 drugs from literature sources. When the exponent bivwas higher than 0.85, BRW was incorporated into the allometricrelationship (CLu*BRW = a · Wbiv). This approach was also applied tothe prediction of CLu/F for 10 Parke-Davis compounds. Human oralt1/2, Cmax, AUC, and bioavailability were estimated based onallometrically predicted pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters. Results. Human CL and CL/F were more accurately estimated usingunbound drug concentration and the prediction was further improvedwhen BRW was incorporated into the allometric relationship. ForParke-Davis compounds, the predicted human CL and CL/F werewithin 50-200% and 50-220% of the actual values, respectively. Theestimated human oral t1/2, Cmax, and AUC were within 82-220%,56-240%, and 73-190% of the actual values for all 7 compounds, suggesting that human oral PK parameters of those drugs could bereasonably predicted from animal data. Conclusions. Results from the retrospective analysis indicate thatallometric scaling of free concentration could be applied to orallyadministered drugs to gain knowledge of drug disposition in man, and to helpdecision-making at early stages of drug development.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To describe the pharmacokinetics of R- andS-Ifosfamide (IFF), and their respective 2 and 3 N-dechloroethylated (DCE)metabolites (R2-, R3-, S2, S3-DCE-IFF) in cancer patients. Methods. (R,S)-IFF was administered (1.5 g/m2)daily for 5 days in 13 cancer patients. Plasma and urine samples were collectedand analyzed using an enantioselective GC-MS method. An average of 97observations per patient were simultaneously fitted using apharmacokinetic-metabolism (PK-MB) model. A population PK analysis was performedusing an iterative 2-stage method (IT2S). Results. Auto-induction of IFF metabolism was observed over the 5day period. Increases were seen in IFF clearance (R: 4 vs 7 L/h; S: 5vs 10 L/h), and in the formation of DCE (R: 7 vs 9%; S: 14 vs 19%)and active metabolites (4-OHM-IFF; R: 71 vs 77%; S: 67 vs 71%). Anovel finding of this analysis was that the renal excretion of the DCEmetabolites was also induced. Conclusions. This population PK-MB model for (R,S)-IFF may beuseful in the optimization of patient care, and gives new insight intothe metabolism of (R,S)-IFF.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. The aim of the study was to prepare stealth and remoteloading proliposome (SRP-L) to carry doxorubicin (DXR) and evaluatethe pharmacokinetics, acute toxicity, and anticancer effect of DXRcarried with SRP-L. Methods. SRP-L was transparent solution. When SRP-L was injectedinto 0.9% NaCl aqueous solution containing DXR, liposomes formedand automatically loaded DXR (SRP-L-DXR). The long circulation ofSRP-L-DXR was evaluated using the pharmacokinetics ofSRP-L-DXR, cardiolipin liposomal DXR (CL-DXR) and free DXR (F-DXR).The acute toxicity and anticancer effect of SRP-L-DXR were evaluatedin C57BL/6 mice and murine hystocytoma M5076 tumor model. Results. The average diameter of SRP-L-DXR in pure water was112.9 ± 8.6 (nm) and the encapsulation efficiency of SRP-L-DXRwas 96.5 ± 0.2% in pure water, 95.5 ± 0.1% in 5% glucose and 98.01± 0.6% in 0.9% NaCl. The plasma concentration of SRP-L-DXR wasmuch higher than those of F-DXR and CL-DXR. Compared with thatof F-DXR, the SRP-L-DXR had lower acute toxicity and its anticancereffects depended upon the therapeutic treatment. Conclusions. A novel proliposome (SRP-L) was developed, whichcould automatically load DXR and form SRP-L-DXR with excellentcharacteristics. SRP-L-DXR had lower acute toxicity but was notalways more effective for the treatment of the ascitic M5076 thanF-DXR.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To quantify the contribution of distributional processes across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to the delay in antinociceptive effect of morphine in rats. Methods. Unbound morphine concentrations were monitored in venous blood and in brain extracellular fluid (ECF) using microdialysis (MD) and in arterial blood by regular sampling. Retrodialysis by drug was used for in vivo calibration of the MD probes. Morphine was infused (10 or 40 mg/kg) over 10 min intravenously. Nociception, measured by the electrical stimulation vocalisation method, and blood gas status were determined. Results. The half-life of unbound morphine in striatum was 44 min compared to 30 min in venous and arterial blood (p 〈 0.05). The BBB equilibration of morphine, expressed as the ratio of areas under the curve between striatum and venous blood, was less than unity (0.28 ± 0.09 and 0.22 ± 0.17 for 10 and 40 mg/kg), respectively, indicating active efflux of morphine across the BBB. The concentration-effect relationship exhibited a clear hysterisis with an effect delay half-life of 32 and 5 min based on arterial blood and brain ECF concentrations, respectively. Conclusions. Eighty five percent of the effect delay was caused by morphine transport across the BBB, indicating possible involvement of rate limiting mechanisms at the receptor level or distributional phenomena for the remaining effect delay of 5 min.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. The aim of this work was a pragmatic, statistically sound and clinically relevant approach to dose-proportionality analyses that is compatible with common study designs. Methods. Statistical estimation is used to derive a (1-α)% confidence interval (CI) for the ratio of dose-normalized, geometric mean values (Rdnm) of a pharmacokinetic variable (PK). An acceptance interval for Rdnm defining the clinically relevant, dose-proportional region is established a priori. Proportionality is declared if the CI for Rdnm is completely contained within the critical region. The approach is illustrated with mixed-effects models based on a power function of the form PK = β0 • Doseβ1; however, the logic holds for other functional forms. Results. It was observed that the dose-proportional region delineated by a power model depends only on the dose ratio. Furthermore, a dose ratio (ρ1) can be calculated such that the CI lies entirely within the pre-specified critical region. A larger ratio (ρ2) may exist such that the CI lies completely outside that region. The approach supports inferences about the PK response that are not constrained to the exact dose levels studied. Conclusion. The proposed method enhances the information from a clinical dose-proportionality study and helps to standardize decision rules.

SK&F 107647 pharmacokinetics were evaluated in 2dose-escalation studies. Volunteers received SK&F 107647 as single15-minute iv infusion doses of 1, 10, 100, 500, and 1000 μg/kg. Cancerpatients received 2-hour iv infusions of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 1μg/kg once daily for 10 days. Drug concentrations were quantified in plasmaand urine of healthy volunteers and on days 1 and 10 in plasma ofcancer patients receiving the two top dose levels.Results. In volunteers, mean clearance (CL) ranged from 76.7 to 101ml/hour/kg; mean volume of distribution at steady-state (Vss)rangedfrom 175 to 268 ml/kg. Most of the administered dose was renallyexcreted as intact peptide within 24 hours postinfusion. In patients, mean CL was 57.6 ml/hour/kg, mean Vss ranged from 128 to 150ml/kg and terminal half-life from 2.1 to 3.4 hours. There was littleaccumulation of drug. In both studies, linear pharmacokinetics wasobserved. Clearance approached normal glomerular filtration rate(GFR) in volunteers and correlated with creatinine clearance incancer patients.Conclusions. SK&F 107647 exhibits linear pharmacokinetics, a smallVss, and clearance, primarily renal, approaching normal GFR.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To analyze the role of the kinetics of glycyrrhizic acid (GD) in its toxicity. A physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model that has been developed for humans. Methods. The kinetics of GD, which is absorbed as glycyrrhetic acid (GA), were described by a human PBPK model, which is based on a rat model. After rat to human extrapolation, the model was validated on plasma concentration data after ingestion of GA and GD solutions or licorice confectionery, and an additional data derived from the literature. Observed interindividual variability in kinetics was quantified by deriving an optimal set of parameters for each individual. Results. The a-priori defined model successfully forecasted GA kinetics in humans, which is characterized by a second absorption peak in the terminal elimination phase. This peak is subscribed to enterohepatic cycling of GA metabolites. The optimized model explained most of the interindividual variance, observed in the clinical study, and adequately described data from the literature. Conclusions. Preclinical information on GD kinetics could be incorporated in the human PBPK model. Model simulations demonstrate that especially in subjects with prolonged gastrointestinal residence times, GA may accumulate after repeated licorice consumption, thus increasing the health risk of this specific subgroup of individuals.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. Population models for thepharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationship for cetrorelix (CET), a luteinising hormone-releasinghormone (LH-RH) antagonist, and the pharmacodynamic response ontestosterone production were investigated in rats and dogs. Methods. The plasma concentrations of CET and testosterone weredetermined after intravenous and subcutaneous injections. Thepopulation PK/PD-models were developed using P-PHARM software. Results. Absolute bioavailability of cetrorelix was 100% in rats and97% in dogs. In rats, the pharmacokinetics was explained by atwo-compartment model with saturable absorption, while athree-compartment model was used in dogs. Testosterone suppression in both specieswas described by a sigmoid Emax model with maximum effect (Emax)considered as total hormonal suppression. The duration of testosteronesuppression in rats was longer at higher doses. The populationelimination half-lifes after iv-dose were 3.0 h in rats and 9.3 h in dogs.Population mean estimates of IC50 were 1.39 and 1.24 ng/ml in ratsand dogs, respectively. Conclusions. A population pharmacokinetic model was developed toexplain the dissolution rate limited absorption from the injection site. The suppression of testosterone could be described by an indirectinhibitory sigmoid Emax model. In both species 1-2 ng/ml CET inplasma was necessary to suppress testosterone production.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To determine the relative bioavailability of two marketed,immediate-release methylphenidate tablets. The study used a replicatedstudy design to characterize intrasubject variability, and determinebioequivalence using both average and individual bioequivalencecriteria. Methods. A replicated crossover design was employed using 20subjects. Each subject received a single 20 mg dose of the reference tableton two occasions and two doses of the test tablet on two occasions.Blood samples were obtained for 10 hr after dosing, and plasma wasassayed for methylphenidate by GC/MS. Results. The test product was more rapidly dissolved in vitro and morerapidly absorbed in vivo than the reference product. The mean Cmaxand AUC(0 − ∞) differed by 11% and 9%, respectively. Using anaverage bioequivalence criterion, the 90% confidence limits for theLn-transformed Cmax and AUC(0 − ∞), comparing the two replicatesof the test to the reference product, fell within the acceptable range of80–125%. Using an individual bioequivalence criterion the test productfailed to demonstrate equivalence in Cmax to the reference product. Conclusions. The test and reference tablets were bioequivalent usingan average bioequivalence criterion. The intrasubject variability of thegeneric product was greater and the subject-by-formulation interactionvariance was borderline high. For these reasons, the test tablets werenot individually bioequivalent to the reference tablets.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To characterize the in vivo specific binding andpharmacokinetics of a 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) calcium channel antagonist, PN200-110, in the senescent brain, using senescence-accelerated pronemice (SAMP8) and senescence-resistant mice (SAMR1). Methods. Blood, brain, and heart samples were taken periodically fromSAMR1 and SAMP8 following intravenous injection of (+)-[3H]PN200-110, and the concentration of (+)-[3H]PN 200-110 in the plasmaand tissues was determined. In addition, the in vivo specific bindingof (+)-[3H]PN 200-110 in the brains of SAMR1 and SAMP8 wasmeasured periodically after intravenous injection of the radioligand. Results. There was very little significant difference between SAMR1and SAMP8 in terms of the half-life (t1/2), total body clearance (CLtot),steady-state volume of distribution (Vdss), and AUC for the plasmaconcentration of (+)-[3H]PN 200-110 after intravenous injection ofthe radioligand. The brain concentration (AUCbrain) for (+)-[3H]PN200-110 and the brain/plasma AUC ratio (AUCbrain/AUCplasma) weresignificantly lower in SAMP8 than in SAMR1, and the heartconcentration (AUCheart) and the heart/plasma AUC ratio (AUCheart/AUCplasma)were similar in both strains. Also, the brain/plasma unbound AUCratio (AUCbrain/AUCplasma-free) for (+)-[3H]PN 200-110 wassignificantly lower in SAMP8 than in SAMR1. The in vivo specific binding(AUCspecific binding, maximal number of binding sites: Bmax) of(+)-[3H]PN 200-110 was significantly lower in brain particulate fractionsof SAMP8 than SAMR1. Conclusions. The concentration and in vivo specific binding of(+)-[3H]PN 200-110 was significantly reduced in the senescent brain. Thesimultaneous analysis of the concentrations of centrally acting drugsand the in vivo specific binding in the brain in relation to theirpharmacokinetics may be valuable in evaluating their CNS effects.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To develop a viable, single pass rat head perfusion modeluseful for pharmacokinetic studies. Methods. A viable rat head preparation, perfused with MOPS-bufferedRinger's solution, was developed. Radiolabelled markers (red bloodcells, water and sucrose) were injected in a bolus into the internalcarotid artery and collected from the posterior facial vein over 28minutes. The double inverse Gaussian function was used to estimatethe statistical moments of the markers. Results. The viability of the perfusion was up to one hour, with optimalperfusate being 2% bovine serum albumin at 37°C, pH 7.4. Thedistribution volumes for red blood cells, sucrose and water (from all studies,n = 18) were 1.0 ± 0.3ml, 6.4 ± 4.2ml and 18.3 ± 11.9ml, respectively.A high normalised variance for red blood cells (3.1 ± 2.0) suggestsa marked vascular heterogeneity. A higher normalised variance forwater (6.4 ± 3.3) is consistent with additional diffusive/permeabilitylimitations. Conclusions. Analysis of the physiological parameters derived fromthe moments suggested that the kinetics of the markers were consistentwith distribution throughout the head (weight 25g) rather than justthe brain (weight 2g). This model should assist in studying solutepharmacokinetics in the head.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. The extremely low clearance and small distribution volumeof UCN-01 in humans could be partly due to the high degree of bindingto hAGP (1,2). The quantitative effects of hAGP on the pharmacokineticsof UCN-01 at several levels of hAGP and UCN-01 were estimatedin rats given an infusion of hAGP to mimic the clinical situation anda physiological model for analysis was developed. Methods. The plasma concentrations of UCN-01 (72.5–7250 nmol/kgiv) in rats given an infusion of hAGP, 15 or 150 nmol/h/kg, weremeasured by HPLC. Pharmacokinetic analysis under conditionsassuming rapid equilibrium of protein binding and incorporating thedissociation rate was conducted. Results. The Vdss and CLtot of UCN-01 (725 nmol/kg iv) in ratsgiven an infusion of hAGP, 150 nmol/h/kg, fell to about 1/250 and 1/700that in control rats. The Vdss and CLtot following 72.5–7250nmol/kg UCN-01 to rats given 150 nmol/h/kg hAGP were 63.9–688ml/kg and 3.18–32.9 ml/h/kg, respectively, indicating non-linearitydue to saturation of UCN-01 binding. The CLtot estimated by thephysiological model assuming rapid equilibrium of UCN-01 bindingto hAGP, was six times higher than the observed value while the CLtotestimated by the model incorporating koff, measured using DCC, wascomparable with the observed value. Conclusions. These results suggest that the slow dissociation ofUCN-01 from hAGP limits its disposition and elimination.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To investigate the ability of an IVIVC developedwith a racemate drug as well as each enantiomer in predicting the invivo enantiomer drug performance. Methods. Dissolution of metoprolol extended releasetablets with different release characteristics (e.g., fast (F),moderate (M), and slow (S)) was performed using USP ApparatusI, pH 1.2, 50 rpm. Metoprolol racemate tablets (S, M, and F, 100 mg) and 50mg oral solution were administered to healthy volunteers, blood samples werecollected over 24 (solution) and 48 (tablet) hours and assayed. IVIVC modelsdeveloped were: (1) Racemate-fraction of drug dissolved (FRD) vsRacemate-fraction of drug absorbed (FRA), (2) R-FRD vs R-FRA, and (3) S-FRDvs S-FRA for combinations of formulations (S/M/F, S/M, S/F, and M/F).Enantiomer Cmax and AUC prediction errors (PEs) were estimated for modelevaluation after convolution of in vivo release rates. Results. The R-IVIVC and S-IVIVC accurately predicted theR- and S-metoprolol pharmacokinetic profiles, respectively. The averagedprediciton errors (PE) for the enantiomer Cmax and AUC were less than10% for S/M/F, M/F, and S/F IVIVC models. Racemate-IVIVC (M/F) wasable to predict S-enantiomer with an average %PE of 2.52 for S-Cmaxand 4.3 for S-AUC. However, the racemate-IVIVC was unable to predict theR-enantiomer pharmacokinetic profile. Conclusions. Metoprolol racemate data cannot be used toaccurately predict R-enantiomer drug concentrations. However, the racematedata was predictive of the active stereoisomer.

Notizen: Abstract Classification within the genusRosa is problematic due to ± continuous variation of morphological characters. The dogroses, (Rosa, sectionCaninae) are classified only by their unique meiotic system not by directly visible characters. The intrasectional structure remains insufficient, as the characters (glands, hairs and prickles) are known to exhibit great morphological divergence affected by both genetic plasticity and environmental influences. Taxonomy of dogroses follows a highly artificial system which allows us to identify morphospecies, which are not necessarily evolutionary species. However, SEM-studies in theCaninae revealed that all taxa of the subsectionRubiginosae are characterised by a granule type of epicuticular waxes, whereas members from the other subsections (with three exceptions) form triangular rodlets. Comparison with specimens grown under the same conditions confirmed these findings on natural populations and additionally revealed that following artificial hybridism, offspring develop the maternal type of wax structure due to the matroclinal inheritance in this section.

Notizen: Abstract The phenetic analysis of non-nodulatingAcacia species by Harrier et al. (1997) was repeated to illustrate how different computer programs may generate alternative UPGMA trees for the very same data, even in the absence of data input order effects (ties). For example, all Harrier et al.'s UPGMA dendrograms produced by software from the Scottish Agricultural Statistics Service differed from those obtained by the packages NTSYS and MVSP87. Particularly, the positions ofA. albida, A. rovumae, andA. pentagona, as well as the relationships betweenDiacanthae andTriacanthae were affected by this phenomenon. Hence, whenever clustering techniques are used, care should be taken to consider possible software-dependent caveats and artefacts. Nevertheless, all programs provided clusterings that largely coincided with the subgeneric and sectional groupings proposed by Vassal (1972) although the positions of some species varied depending on whether morphological or molecular data were considered (e.g.A. albida andA. rovumae).

Notizen: Abstract The occurrence of leaflet secretory cavities in 23 Brazilian species ofLonchocarpus was surveyed anatomically and compared with data from external morphology (presence of pellucid dots) to evaluate their taxonomic significance. This study revealed three cases: presence of secretory cavities associated with pellucid dots, pellucid dots corresponding to false secretory cavities, and absence of pellucid dots and secretory cavities. These results indicate that in this genus the “glandular pellucid dots” cited in morphological descriptions do not always correspond to secretory cavities, and that their nature must always be confirmed by histological sections. Secretory cavities have systematic significance at subgeneric taxonomic level for the genusLonchocarpus.

Notizen: Abstract This study records the chromosome numbers of 10 species ofStreptocarpus; nine of the counts are new. With the exception ofS. buchananii of mainland Africa, all the results are for plants endemic to Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. While there is a strong correlation between basic number and growth form in the two subgenera of the genus on the African mainland (x = 15 among caulescent species in subgenusStreptocarpella; x = 16 among acaulescent species in subgenusStreptocarpus), the situation appears more complex among Madagascan and Comoro Island species. One notable example of deviation from this correlation is shown byS. papangae, a shrubby caulescent species, with 2n = 32 (x = 16). Polyploidy in the genus appears to be absent on mainland Africa, but is present in Madagascar and the Comoro Islands, ranging from tetraploidy to octoploidy. Evolutionary implications of the cytological observations are considered.

Notizen: Abstract Genetic diversity has been investigated by the application of molecular markers in, for the first time, all the taxa recognised in recent treatises of the genusHippophae. RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) analyses were conducted with 9 decamer primers, which together yielded 219 polymorphic markers. We found 16 fixed RAPD markers, i.e. markers that either occurred in all plants of a population or were absent from all plants. Several of these markers were useful for analysis of interspecific relationships, whereas others can be considered as taxon-specific markers. Clustering of taxa and populations in our neighbour-joining based dendrogram was in good agreement with some recently suggested taxonomic treatises ofHippophae. Amount and distribution of genetic variability varied considerably between species. Partitioning of molecular variance withinH. rhamnoides supported earlier findings that a considerable part of the total variance resides among subspecies (59.6%) Within-population variability also differed considerably. Percentage polymorphic RAPD loci and Lynch and Milligan within-population gene diversity estimates showed relatively high values for some species close to the geographic centre of origin in Central Asia, e.g.H. tibetana and the putatively hybridogenousH. goniocarpa. Spatial autocorrelation analyses performed on 12 populations ofH. rhamnoides revealed positive autocorrelation of allele frequencies when geographic distances ranged from 0 to 700 km, and no or negative autocorrelation at higher distances. At distances between 700 and 1900 km, we observed deviations from the expected values with strongly negative autocorrelation of allele frequencies. A corresponding relationship between geographic and genetic distances could not be found when the analysis instead was based on one population from each of 8 species.

Notizen: Abstract This study examined the effect of normal development and vigilance state on the modulation of dentate granule cell activity in the freely moving rat at 15, 30, and 90 days of age across three vigilance states: quiet waking, slow-wave sleep, and rapid eye movement sleep. Using paired-pulse stimulation, the paired-pulse index (PPI) was obtained for the dentate evoked field potentials elicited by the stimulation of the medial perforant path. Although significant differences in PPI values were observed during development, no significant vigilance state related changes were obtained. Preweaning infant rats, i.e., 15-day old, exhibited significantly less early (interpulse intervals, IPI= 20–50 ms) and late (IPI = 300–1000 ms) inhibition, and less facilitation (IPI = 50–150 ms) when compared to the 90-day old adult rats during all three vigilance states. PPI values obtained from the 30-day old group fell intermediate between the 15- and 90-day old animals. These changes in PPI values provide a quantitative measure of changes in the modulation of dentate granule cell excitability during normal maturation. They can now can be used to evaluate the impact of various insults, such as prenatal protein malnutrition or neonatal stress, on hippocampal development. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society. Notizen: Abstract The end systolic pressure–volume relation (ESPVR) has been shown to be a relatively load independent measure of left ventricular (LV) contractility. Recently, several single-beat ESPVR computation methods have been developed, enabling the quantification of LV contractility without the need to alter vascular loading conditions on the heart. Using a single-beat ESPVR method, which has been validated previously in humans and assumes that normalized elastance is constant between individuals of a species, we studied the effects of myocardial infarction on LV contractility in two species, the rat and the pig. In our studies, LV pressure was acquired invasively and LV volume determined noninvasively with magnetic resonance imaging, at one week postinfarction in pigs and at 12 weeks postinfarction in rats. Normalized systolic elastance curves in both animal species were not statistically different from that of humans. Also, the slope of the ESPVR $$\left( {E_{es} } \right)$$ decreased significantly following infarction in both species, while the volume-axis intercept $$\left( {V_0 } \right)$$ was unaffected. These results indicate that a single-beat ESPVR method can be used to measure the inotropic response of the heart to myocardial infarction, and that the basis for this method (i.e., constant normalized elastance) is applicable to a variety of mammalian species. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society. Notizen: Abstract We present a novel time-varying phase spectrum (TVPS) method to quantify the dynamics of coevolution of two persistent nonstationary coupled signals. Based on the TVPS, an instantaneous intersignal phase shift is defined within the primary frequency range in which the two signals are highly correlated. The TVPS is estimated using a fixed-window method or an adaptive-window method. In the latter method, the window length changes dynamically and automatically as a function of change in frequency of the signals. The effects of altering window types and lengths on the accuracy of the estimation of the primary phase shift is assessed by analyzing synthesized linear chirp signals with decaying amplitude and constant relative phase shift or decaying amplitude and changing relative phase shifts. The methods developed are also used for determining the evolution of the primary phase shift among ventral root activities during fictive locomotion in an in vitro rat spinal cord preparation. The analyses indicate that the TVPS method in conjunction with the determination of the primary frequency range, allows determination of both the evolution of the coupling strength and the evolution of the phase shift between two persistent nonstationary rhythmic signals in the joint time–frequency domain. An adaptive window reduces the estimation bias and the estimation variability. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society. PAC00: 0230-f, 8780Tq

Notizen: Abstract The system Co ― Si ― B is promising for development of new soft magnetic materials. We studied the effect of boron on the structure and composition of cobalt silicides during solid-phase reaction of powders of the starting components under a 3·10−3 Pa vacuum in the temperature range 200°C to 1300°C for boron content from 0.5 mass% to 7.7 mass% by differential thermal analysis, metallographic analysis, x-ray analysis, and electron-probe microanalysis. We established that boron is not soluble in cobalt silicides. Formation of ternary chemical compounds is typical for the Co ― Si ― B system.

Notizen: Abstract Polar-desert plants experience low average air temperatures during their short growing season (4–8 °C mean July temperature). In addition, low availability of inorganic nitrogen in the soil may also limit plant growth. Our goals were to elucidate which N sources can be acquired by polar-desert plants, and how growth and N-uptake are affected by low growth temperatures. We compared rates of N-uptake and increases in mass and leaf area of two polar-desert species (Cerastium alpinum L. and Saxifraga caespitosa L.) over a period of 3 weeks when grown at two temperatures (6 °C vs. 15 °C) and supplied with either glycine, NH4 + or NO3 −. At 15 °C, plants at least doubled their leaf area, whereas there was no change in leaf area at 6 °C. Measured mean N-uptake rates varied between 0.5 nmol g−1 root DM s−1 on glycine at 15 °C and 7.5 nmol g−1 root DM s−1 on NH4 + at 15 °C. Uptake rates based upon increases in mass and tissue N concentrations showed that plants had a lower N-uptake rate at 6 °C, regardless of N source or species. We conclude that these polar-desert plants can use all three N sources to increase their leaf area and support flowering when grown at 15 °C. Based upon short-term (8 h) uptake experiments, we also conclude that the short-term capacity to take up inorganic or organic N is not reduced by low temperature (6 °C). However, net N-uptake integrated over a three-week period is severely reduced at 6 °C.

Notizen: Abstract Twenty-five samples from 18 terrestrial and/or freshwater habitats in the eastern part of Korea yielded 38 new records of bdelloid rotifers, 22 of which are new to the Asian fauna. Among these Korean new records, Dissotrocha aculeata reversa Berzins and Habrotrocha plana Milne were recorded outside their type localities for the first time, and Macrotrachela bullata (Murray) was reported only from two countries after its description. Bradyscela granulosa de Koning, Habrotrocha gracilis gracilis Montet, Macrotrachela latior Donner, Philodina duplicalcar (de Koning) and P. rugosa coriacea Bryce are recorded outside Europe for the first time. The taxonomy and distribution of these rare species are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of temperature on growth rate, shell size and shell shape in Krithe praetexta praetexta (Sars) was studied in four thermocultures. From July 1995 to June 1996, the cultures were kept in a continuously flowing open system pumping water from the intermediate watermass of the Gullmarn fjord, west coast of Sweden. Three cultures were kept at constant temperatures of 5, 10 and 14 °C, respectively. The fourth (reference) culture largely followed the natural variation in temperature. At the termination of the experiment, all living ostracods from a 125 μm sieve were sampled from the cultures. Population age structures were analysed for the various thermocultures of K. praetexta praetexta. These were more shifted towards later ontogenetic stages with higher temperature, i.e. the ontogenetic development was more rapid in the warmer cultures. An alternative explanation is due to diapause causing cohorts to accumulate in some ontogenetic stages only when the temperature is constant. The differences in shell size of K. praetexta praetexta among the thermoconstant cultures were not statistically significant.

Notizen: Abstract This paper represents the first study of the morphology of the upper lip (labrum) and hypostome of ostracods using scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.). There is considerable variation in the upper lip morphology of the 23 species of Cypridoidea (Podocopina) ostracods used in this study. The detail of the upper lip morphology of each species is very distinctive, so that species determination can be made on this feature alone, but it is not useful in diagnosing genera or subfamilies. The hypostome is not readily studied due to the large amounts of dense pseudochaetae (small, setae-like projections) protruding from it and hence is considered not to be a useful taxonomic feature. Several features of the upper lip and mouth region are documented for the first time. Comparisons of the general morphology of the upper lips of Recent ostracods with the upper lip of the fossil ostracod Pattersoncypris micropapillosa Bate, 1972, indicate that there has been very conservative evolution in these features since the Cretaceous.

Notizen: Abstract A new Ryocalanoid copepod, Ryocalanus spinifrons, collected by the MTD net system at a depth of 1400 m from the southwestern part of Sagami Bay, Japan, is described. The new species is morphologically very close to R. infelix Tanaka, 1956 (female unknown) from the Izu region of Sagami Bay. It is distinguished from other species by the presence of 12 long spinules on the ventral inner side of the fifth pedigerous somite, nine setae on the coxal epipodite of the maxillule and nine large robust spinules on the coxal segment of the fourth leg. The row of five robust spines on the paragnath distinguishes R. spinifrons.

Notizen: Abstract Electron transport system (ETS) activity was measured in Chirocephalus croaticus from the intermittent lake, Petelinjsko Jezero. The ETS activities were measured at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 °C, and were studied separately in juveniles, females and males. Juveniles had significantly higher activity than adults at a standard temperature of 20 °C. The mass-specific ETS activity decreased with increasing size of the animals; the value b was 0.787. Respiration rates (R) were determined at 20 °C and the ratio ETS/R (±standard deviation) for C. croaticus was 1.43±0.46 (n=38). ETS activity increased with temperature. Females had higher Q10 than males in higher temperature range (t-test; t=2.50; d.f.=8; p〈0.05). Activation energy Ea was higher for females than males (t-test; t=2.35; d.f.=8; p〈0.05). Females exhibited lower ETS activity than males over the lower temperature range, but their ETS could function more efficient at higher temperature.

For each salinity five 30 l aquaria were used, each one including a male and two females. Maturity and spawning outside the natural season, were obtained at conditions of 22 to 28°C and a photoperiod of 14L:10D. The larvae were fed with rotifers Brachionus plicatilis and Synchaeta cecilia valentina. Experiment lasted 40 days. The first spawning occurred on the 17th day at 45 ppt of salinity and the first embryos hatched on the 34th day at 5 and 15 ppt salinity. The final average number of larvae per aquarium ranged from 5.2 (45 ppt salinity) to 10.8 (15 ppt salinity). No significant differences were found between the average values at different salinities (p〈0.01).

Notizen: Abstract There was a pronounced decline in activity of young pool-dwelling Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, and brown trout, Salmo trutta, as the water temperatures dropped in the autumn and early winter, and the fish switched from a predominantly diurnal towards a nocturnal activity pattern. Such a switch in activity pattern has previously been observed in young brown trout, but the present study is the first documentation for juvenile Atlantic salmon under natural conditions. Juvenile fish fed actively even when water temperatures were below 0°C, although foraging behaviour at near-freezing temperatures was recorded exclusively during night surveys. This indicates that other proximate factors, in addition to water temperature, affect the activity of young salmon and trout in rivers. Trout kept feeding positions significantly higher above bottom than salmon in August and September, but both species reduced the height above bottom at the onset of winter, possibly due to reduced swimming performance and lowered food availability in the upper part of the water column.

Notizen: Abstract Morphological characters useful for taxonomic identification of older copepodid instars of the subfamily Eucyclopinae were studied among 14 species of Eucyclops, Macrocyclops, Ectocyclops, Paracyclops and Tropocyclops known from European Russia. For taxonomic analysis, the following elements of copepodid morphology were chosen: armament and proportion of furcal rami; morphology of swimming legs and reduced 5th and 6th legs; antennule segmentation; and relative body length of copepodid instars in comparison with the female length. Changes in morphology of major copepodid instars of the subfamily Eucyclopinae during ontogenetic development are traced and noticeable differences among five genera and 14 species are described. These differences among major copepodid stages may be important for both taxonomic and ecological analysis. For taxonomy, they provide information on development of sexes and species during maturation. For ecology they allow identification of the specimens at 4–5 copepodid instars in diapause. A key to major copepodid instars of the species from the subfamily Eucyclopinae which are known from limnetic habitats of the European part of Russia is presented.

Notizen: Abstract Use of traditional methods for morphological studies only permits the analysis of a small part of the information embodied in morphological structures. Besides comparing populations using the mean values of characters which allows one to estimate their morphological similarity, analysis of variation among individuals within a population can be informative. Variation among individuals consists of factorial and stochastic components. The factorial component is an upper estimate of genetic heterogeneity and thus permits one to evaluate the population's adaptability. The stochastic component (estimated by fluctuating asymmetry, i.e. random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry), being a measure of developmental stability, is an indicator of a population's fitness. Assessment of measurement error is necessary for assessment of the true value of the stochastic component and for selection of the most informative characters. Such analysis allows one to extract additional information from morphological data in comparison with methods traditionally used on copepods. This approach was applied to an analysis of morphological variation in the study of the Baikalian endemic cyclopoid Acanthocyclops signifer (Mazepova) from three different isolated localities. Characters typically used in studies of taxonomy of this group are considered here. Measurement error was rather high (more than 50% of the stochastic component), which can be explained by technical difficulties of measuring the characters. All populations differ in the mean values of the characters. This shows the taxonomic heterogeneity of this group and reveals the necessity of its taxonomic revision. Populations also differ in the level of stochastic and factorial components of the total variance. The data are interpreted from the point of view of taxonomy and the possible evolution of the group.

Notizen: Abstract Nitocrellopsis texana n. sp. found in samples collected by SCUBA divers in Honey Creek Cave (Texas, U.S.A.) is described. This species is the first representative of this stygobitic taxon from a Northern American locality. The original description of N. ioneli (Dumont & Decraemer, 1975) is amended and the closely related N. ahaggarensis n. sp. is described from a well near Tamanghasset in the Ahaggar mountains in Algeria. The monophyly of Nitocrellopsis is discussed and its present day distribution is analyzed.

Notizen: Abstract We surveyed the dinoflagellate genus Prorocentrum Ehrenberg in Mexican Pacific waters, where it is rather common and sometimes causes red tides in coastal areas or shrimp farms. Material collected from Baja California and the Gulf of California was analyzed. Thirteen species were identified, all of them planktonic (although P. mexicanum is also epiphytic). All species are described by light microscopy, and most are also described by scanning electron microscopy; comments on morphology, taxonomy and distribution are made. Red tides were caused by P. dentatum, P. minimum and P. triestinum. Prorocentrum mexicanum and P. minimum were suspected of being toxic. Four species, previously reported in the Gulf of California, were not found. A total of 18 species, including the new records P. dactylum and P. lebourae have been to date reported from the Mexican Pacific.

Notizen: Abstract Populations of the mayfly Cloeon dipterum from 48 ponds (3000 l fibre-glass tanks of 1 m depth) were monitored over the course of 1 year. To simulate possible patterns of climatic change, the ponds were subject to three temperature treatments: continuous heating to 3 °C above ambient; heating to 3 °C above ambient during the summer only; and no heating. Further experimental complexity included enhanced nutrient input into the ponds and the presence or absence of fish, giving a factorial combination of 3 temperature regimes × 2 nutrient levels × presence/absence of fish predation. Few nymphs were found in the presence of fish. Where fish were absent, the temperature treatments did not significantly affect nymph abundances, and only marginally influenced mean nymph body-lengths. In contrast, the nutrient treatment had significant effects on both nymph abundance and size, with greater numbers of generally larger nymphs occurring in those fish-free ponds receiving additional nutrients. Adult emergence began earlier in the year from the heated ponds, particularly those ponds receiving additional nutrients. Adult body-length differed between temperature treatments, but consistent patterns were difficult to ascertain because of interactions with nutrient treatment and seasonal effects. Our results show that during the short term at least, elevated temperature as a simulation of climate change does not have an overwhelming influence on either mayfly abundance or size. The influence of temperature is subtle and subject to complex interaction with other habitat variables. We therefore suggest that the direct consequences of small changes in temperature will likely be of little significance to C. dipterum, relative to indirect effects operating through interactions with predation and nutrient input.

Notizen: Abstract The poorly known D. dubium Manuilova is redescribed on extensive material from more than 80 populations from the Russian Far East, Central Asia, Mongolia, China, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Its morphological variability and geographical distribution are analysed and supplemented by notes on biology. The conspecificity of morphologically different distant populations is discussed. In the northern part of its range, D. dubium was long confused with D. brachyurum or D. leuchtenbergianum, and in the south with D. modigliani. It seems that the recent appearance of D. dubium in fish ponds of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan was an introduction, together with Far Eastern fish. D. pseudodubium sp.nov., close to but markedly different, is described from two lakes in the lower Amur river system. D. dubium, D. pseudodubium, D. tropicum and D. modigliani s. str. form a group of related species, widely distributed in Eastern and Southern Asia.

Notizen: Abstract The tools of molecular genetics have enormous potential for clarifying the nature and age of species boundaries in marine organisms. Below I summarize the genetic implications of various species concepts, and review the results of recent molecular genetic analyses of species boundaries in marine microbes, plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. Excessive lumping, rather than excessive splitting, characterizes the current systematic situation in many groups. Morphologically similar species are often quite distinct genetically, suggesting that conservative systematic traditions or morphological stasis may be involved. Some reproductively isolated taxa exhibit only small levels of genetic differentiation, however. In these cases, large population sizes, slow rates of molecular evolution, and relatively recent origins may contribute to the difficulty in finding fixed genetic markers associated with barriers to gene exchange. The extent to which hybridization blurs species boundaries of marine organisms remains a subject of real disagreement in some groups (e.g. corals). The ages of recently diverged species are largely unknown; many appear to be older than 3 million years, but snails and fishes provide several examples of more recent divergences. Increasingly sophisticated genetic analyses make it easier to distinguish allopatric taxa, but criteria for recognition at the species level are highly inconsistent across studies. Future molecular genetic analyses should help to resolve many of these issues, particularly if coupled with other biological and paleontological approaches.

Notizen: Abstract The Alkor-Deep (140 m), which forms part of a depression system in the northern Kattegat channel east of the island of Læsø (Denmark), is the location of a self sustaining population of Northern krill, Meganyctiphanes norvegica (Euphausiacea). This population is exposed to one of the most pronounced thermal gradients within the distributional range of this pelagic crustacean. During summer, the temperature of the water column ranges between 4 and 6 in the deep to 16 °C near the surface which results in the krill being exposed to temperature differences of 8–10 °C during diel vertical migration. Oxygen consumption rates were used to investigate the physiological adaptation of the animal to such gradients in temperature. The rates were found to increase exponentially from 31 μmol O2 h-1 gdw -1 at 4 °C to 72 μmol O2 h-1 gdw -1 at 16 °C, giving a Q 10-value of 2.0, and indicating that physiological adaptation to varying thermal conditions does not take place. Behavioural adaptations are discussed which may help the krill to cope with large temperature gradients in their environment.

Notizen: Abstract Five species of Cervonema and four species of Laimella are described from the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel, Chile, six species of which are new to science. Cervonema chilensisn. sp. and Cervonema hermanin. sp. are separated from other known species of Cervonema by a short cervical region (less than one head diameter from the front end to the anterior border of the amphids). Cervonema chilensisn. sp. is characterised by a tail length of 5 anal diameters with posterior half filiform; Cervonema hermani n. sp. is characterised by a tail length of 6–9 anal diameter and posterior part (75%) cylindrical. Cervonema shiaen. sp. is characterised by the cephalic seta 4 μm long, amphids 9–10 μm in diameter; spicules 16 μm long and 0.8–0.9 abd; tail 4.7–5.4 anal diameter and 50% posterior part filiform; 4–5 minute precloacal supplements. Laimella subterminatan. sp. is characterised by the subterminal position of the buccal cavity which separates it from the other species of the genus. Laimella annaen. sp. is characterised by the head diameter 9–11 μm, cephalic setae and external labial setae 9 + 5 μm long, respectively, amphids 7 μm in diameter; spicules 28–30 μm long; tail 14–17 anal diameter and posterior part (75%) filiform; 5 precloacal supplements. Laimella sandraen. sp. is very close to Laimella annaen.sp. in having similar cephalic sensilla, amphids and spicules. Laimella sandraen. sp., however, can be separated from L.annaen. sp. by the shape of head and the structure of sperm cells, the total body length and the cylindrical part of tail. Cervonema papillatum Jensen, 1988, C. tenuicauda (Stekhoven, 1950) and L. longicauda Cobb, 1920 are found in this area as well. The key of all known species of Cervonemaand Laimellais presented.

Notizen: Abstract The Nearctic species of Rhynchelmis (Lumbriculidae) are distinguished from the Palearctic group Rhynchelmis s. str. by longitudinal muscle bands that do not curl inwards. Six new species from western North America support the existence of two major groupings within the Nearctic fauna. Species in Group 1 are distinguished from other Rhynchelmis by large penial bulbs and multiple spermathecal diverticula. Within Group 1, Rhynchelmis yakimorum n. sp., Rhynchelmis monsserratus n. sp., Rhynchelmis gustafsoni n. sp. and Rhynchelmis utahensis n. sp. differ from the related Rhynchelmis (=Sutroa) rostrata in having short penes and spermathecae with 2 short, lobed diverticula. R. monsserratus is distinguished by a single, median spermatheca, R. gustafsoni has closely appressed, median spermathecae and atria, and R. utahensis differs in structural details of spermathecae and male pores. Rhynchelmis gilensis n. sp. has a single, median spermatheca with unbranched diverticula and distinctive nephridia. Redescription of material from the type localities of both Sutroa alpestris and R. rostrata supports their combination. Group 2, corresponding in part to Rhynchelmoides, is distinguished from Group 1 mostly by characters that are inconsistent or appear plesiomorphic. Within Group 2, Rhynchelmis saxosa n. sp. closely resembles Rhynchelmis alaskana, except for the absence of lateral blood vessels in posterior segments and distribution of prostates. Rhynchelmis elrodi and Rhynchelmis glandula consistently differ in presence of ventral glands and have different distributions, so their supposed synonymy is rejected.

Notizen: Abstract The onychopod cladoceran Cercopagis that recently invaded the Baltic Sea is reported from new zones of the northern Baltic proper. Because of successful survival and an expanding distribution range, the addition of Cercopagis to the Baltic fauna is considered to be permanent. What has previously been cited as Cercopagis pengoi encompasses the morphology of several other species, subspecies and forms. Either a number of morphologically similar species is present, or there is a number of spurious species in Cercopagis. The last hypothesis is favoured. The spatial distribution pattern of Cercopagis, as well as that of total zooplankton, was correlated with depth. Deep (〉100 m) and shallow (〈10 m) stations had significantly lower abundance than stations of intermediate depth (〈100 m). An overview of the distribution of C. pengoi group in fresh and brackish waters suggests a high tolerance to environmental factors, but with differences among taxa. Due to this ecological flexibility, the colonization of the Baltic is not unexpected. Increasing salinity may restrict dispersal of cercopagids to the southern areas of the Baltic and to the North Sea, but inland lakes (e.g. in Sweden) present an ecological profile suitable for colonization.

Notizen: Abstract Colonization and proliferation of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) population in Hargus lake, a small thermally stratified reservoir in Ohio, U.S.A., caused a significant increase in water clarity and a remarkable decrease in phytoplankton biomass during the period from 1993 to 1995. Increased light penetration and reduced organic matter loading to the meta-and hypolimnion were reflected in the lake stratification patterns, particularly in the temperature and oxygen profiles in the metalimnion. The meta- and hypolimnetic water temperature increased significantly over three years, irrespective of variation in surface water temperature. The epilimnion depth (mixing depth) increased by about the same magnitude as did the average Secchi depth. However, the total heat content of the lake did not show a consistent trend to increasing zebra mussel abundance, as it was largely influenced by the temperature of the large water volumes near the surface, which were in turn affected by weather conditions. Concurrent with the thermal structure change, the dissolved oxygen structure also changed over three years, though to a lesser extent. The changes in oxygen stratification pattern were reflected by increased oxygen concentrations in the metalimnion and a lowered depth of 3 mg l−1 DO isopleth. These observed changes were likely attributed to increased water mixing depth, metalimnion photosynthesis and reduced oxygen consumption by organic matter. With increased epilimnion thickness and improved oxygen conditions in the metalimnion, the habitable space for aquatic macro-organisms (including fish) expanded substantially. Our results suggest that the indirect impacts of zebra mussels on small lake stratification patterns may have much broader implications than do the direct trophic interactions to the whole ecosystem.

Notizen: Abstract The genus Morariopsishas a disjunct distribution. It has been found in south-eastern Europe and in the Baikal region in Russia. In Europe two species are known, both from the Dinaric region. They have been found in three caves only, but always in puddles filled with percolating water. This indicates that they inhabit an unsaturated karstic environment. A third species, Morariopsis dumontin.sp has now been found, in the same type of habitat, on several dates, in a small cave in central Slovenia. Males were recorded for the first time in this genus. The new species is related to Morariospsis kieferiPetkovski, 1959 from Dalmatia. The main differences are in the ornamentation of the furca and of the abdominal segments. P5 and particularly endopodite of P4 in males suggest a close relation between Morariaand Morariopsis.

Notizen: Abstract During an annual cycle, flux rates of oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate and silicate were measured in light and dark bell jars at three sites in Ria Formosa (Algarve, Portugal) enclosing either a natural macrophytic community (macroalgae on sand or mud, a seagrass bed of Zostera noltii) or bare sediments. The results are compared with a preceeding study in which the same bell jar technique has been applied in the Sylt-Rømø Bay of the northern Wadden Sea. Nitrate flux was mainly directed from the water column to the benthic communities in Ria Formosa, as well as in the Sylt-Rømø Bay. However, nitrate uptake was higher in the northern, more eutrophic study area. In Ria Formosa, nutrient concentrations were lower than in the Sylt-Rømø Bay possibly due to strong water exchange with Atlantic waters. High temperatures and strong insolation had a greater impact on nitrate fluxes in Ria Formosa than in the Sylt-Rømø Bay. Bioturbating macrofauna increased ammonium efflux in the Sylt- Rømø Bay while this effect was not as pronounced in the Ria Formosa study sites. Benthic phosphate uptake dominated in the Ria Formosa and was correlated to initial phosphate concentrations in incoming waters. At both study sites, oxygen and nutrient fluxes were correlated with temperature. Additionally, flux rates were strongly influenced by biotic components and levels of eutrophication. A literature survey showed that mainly in temperate regions, material fluxes increase with temperature, whereas in warmer areas, ammonium and phosphate fluxes between sediment and water were generally lower.

Notizen: Abstract Parastenocaris andreji n. sp. was found in ground water in a northwestern part of Slovenia (southern part of Central Europe). Two adult females of the new species were filtered out of 20 000 l of water during examination of an aquifer for water supply. The bore well was 10 m deep. The aquifer is fed by rainwater and probably only occasionally from a nearby alpine river Sava. The new species differs markedly from other known species of the genus by shape and armature of furcal rami, very long and slim maxillae and some characters on endopodites P2–P5. The closest related species are probably Parastenocaris nolliKiefer, 1938 with subspecies P. nolli alpinaKiefer, 1960, P. gertrudae Kiefer, 1968 and P. austriacaKiefer, 1976.

Notizen: Abstract The world's soils contain about 1500 Gt of organic carbon to a depth of 1m and a further 900 Gt from 1--2m. A change of total soil organic carbon by just 10% would thus be equivalent to all the anthropogenic CO2 emitted over 30 years. Warming is likely to increase both the rate of decomposition and net primary production (NPP), with a fraction of NPP forming new organic carbon. Evidence from various sources can be used to assess whether NPP or the rate of decomposition has the greater temperature sensitivity, and, hence, whether warming is likely to lead to an increase or decrease in soil organic carbon. Evidence is reviewed from laboratory-based incubations, field measurements of organic carbon storage, carbon isotope ratios and soil respiration with either naturally varying temperatures or after experimentally increasing soil temperatures. Estimates of terrestrial carbon stored at the Last Glacial Maximum are also reviewed. The review concludes that the temperature dependence of organic matter decomposition can be best described as: d(T) = exp[3.36 (T − 40)/(T + 31.79)] where d(T) is the normalised decomposition rate at temperature T (in °C). In this equation, decomposition rate is normalised to ‘1’ at 40 °C. The review concludes by simulating the likely changes in soil organic carbon with warming. In summary, it appears likely that warming will have the effect of reducing soil organic carbon by stimulating decomposition rates more than NPP. However, increasing CO2 is likely to simultaneously have the effect of increasing soil organic carbon through increases in NPP. Any changes are also likely to be very slow. The net effect of changes in soil organic carbon on atmospheric CO2 loading over the next decades to centuries is, therefore, likely to be small.

Notizen: Abstract In planta quantitative studies of cell cycle are necessary for examining the role of cell division in the response of plants to environmental conditions and to analyse the behaviour of transformed plants in this context. We present and discuss non-intrusive kinematic methods which allow estimating the duration of cell cycle with a high spatial resolution in the leaf. Different methods are proposed and discussed for monocotyledons and dicotyledons, and compared with methods involving the use of chemicals. In monocotyledon leaves, cell division is restricted to a limited zone near the leaf insertion point, twice as long in the mesophyll as in the epidermis. In dicotyledons, cell division occurs in the whole leaf with a uniform and constant cell cycle duration for a determinate number of cell cycles, representing about half of leaf development. Over several experiments, this number is well conserved in a given leaf zone in the absence of stresses, but larger near the leaf base than near the leaf tip. After that, cell cycle duration increases because cells are progressively blocked in G1 while the durations of S-G2-M phases do not change with time. Leaf temperature affects neither the distribution of nuclei in each phase of the cycle nor the number of cell cycles in a leaf. Water or light deficits both cause a partial blockage of nuclei in G1 during the stress only, thereby increasing cell cycle duration and decreasing final cell number. These results suggest that a strong developmental programme drives cell division in leaves, so a simple framework allows analysis of temporal patterns, of spatial gradients and of the effect of environmental conditions.
