    Notes: Coral reefs are exposed to many anthropogenic stresses increasing in impact and range, both on local and regional scales. The main ones discussed here are nutrient enrichment, sewage disposal, sedimentation, oil-related pollution, metals and thermal pollution. The stress comprising the main topic of this article, eutrophication, is examined from the point of view of its physiological and ecological mechanisms of action, on a number of levels. Nutrient enrichment can introduce an imbalance in the exchange of nutrients between the zooxanthellae and the host coral, it reduces light penetration to the reef due to nutrient- stimulated phytoplankton growth, and, most harmful of all, may bring about proliferation of seaweeds. The latter rapidly outgrow, smother and eventually replace, the slow-growing coral reef, adapted to cope with the low nutrient concentrations typical in tropical seas.Eutrophication seldom takes place by itself. Sewage disposal invariably results in nutrient enrichment, but it also enriches the water with organic matter which stimulates proliferation of oxygen-consuming microbes. These may kill corals and other reef organisms, either directly by anoxia, or by related hydrogen sulfide production. Increased sediment deposition is in many cases associated with other human activities leading to eutrophication, such as deforestation and topsoil erosion.Realistically achievable goals to ensure conservation, and in some instances, rehabilitation of coral reefs are listed.

    Notes: Abstract In a previous paper we attempted to assess the contribution of red bacteria of theHalobacterium — Haloferax — Haloarcula group and of the β-carotene-rich green algaDunaliella salina to the red colour of saltern crystallizer ponds. By means of light absorption measurements, we showed that bacterioruberin contained in the bacteria was mainly responsible for the colour of the brines, in spite of the fact that β-carotene derived fromDunaliella was the pigment present in the greatest amount. This apparent discrepancy was explained by the very smallin vivo optical cross-section of β-carotene, which is densely packed in globules inside theD. salina cells. We recently observed that the centrifugation technique used in the previous study to collect biomass from the ponds was unsuitable for this type of measurements, as a substantial part of theDunaliella cells present did not sediment upon centrifugation due to the low specific gravity caused by the high β-carotene content. Therefore similar measurements were performed with biomass collected by filtration. Again,in vivo absorption spectra were dominated by the absorption peaks of bacterioruberin. The results reported here show that, in spite of the methodological problem associated with the earlier study, all views and conclusions expressed in our earlier paper retain their validity.

    Notes: Summary Between 1976–1978, we studied the ecology of the Sphincterochila prophetarum, the most common snail, on stony slopes in Northern Negev. Energy and water flow determinations were made at the individual and population levels on a field observation basis and metabolic data were derived from laboratory simulations. The snails are active during 5–7% of the time during the year, while the remaining 95% of the time, the snails are in aestivation under stones. The energy and water inputs during the short feeding periods are very fast. Only 8% of the total energy in the eaten food are assimilated. Eighty-nine percent of the total assimilated energy are utilized in respiration during the various periods of activity and dormancy. The water loss during the feeding and activity period is about 37% of the total annual input. The snails lose twice as much the amount of water during the winter dormancy periods than in the summer dormancy period.

    Notes: Summary Photosynthesis and respiratory carbon losses of freshly collected Antarctic phytoplankton were measured in incubators at 5 temperatures between-2° C and +8°C. The results were used to predict daily growth rates and to define temperature and daylength boundary conditions under which the net balance between photosynthesis and respiration would be positive and allow increases in standing stock. Whereas the Q10 of photosynthesis was 1.4–2.2, the Q10 of respiratory losses exhibited a wide range and higher maxima (2.3–12). Model calculations sugest that under ample light energy supply during long summer days, potential daily growth rates are not severely affected by the low temperatures prevailing in the Southern Ocean. If energy supply is restricted by short days and deep water column mixing, substantially reduced respiration rates at low temperatures may allow the algae to survive.

    Notes: Abstract Pigment analyses by TLC were carried out during and after the peak of a Peridinium bloom in Lake Kinneret (Israel). During the experimental period considerable changes occurred in the absolute and relative amounts of the various pigments, especially β carotene, diadinoxanthine, peridinin, chlorophyll a and chlorophyl c. The ratio between total Carotenoid to total chlorophyll content is also followed. Our findings show that considerable changes in pigment composition in natural phytoplankton can occur while the species composition remains constant.

    Notes: Abstract Photosynthetic (oxygen evolution) and growth (biomass increase) responses to ambient pH and inorganic carbon (Ci) supply were determined for Porphyralinearis grown in 0.5 L glass cylinders in the laboratory, or in 40 L fibreglass outdoor tanks with running seawater. While net photosynthetic rates were uniform at pH 6.0–8.0, dropping only at pH 8.7, growth rates were significantly affected by pH levels other than that of seawater (c. pH 8.3). In glass cylinders, weekly growth rates averaged 76% at external pH 8.0, 13% at pH 8.7 and 26% at pH 7.0. Photosynthetic O2 evolution on a daily basis(i.e. total O2 evolved during day time less total O2 consumed during night time) was similar to the growth responses at all experimental pH levels, apparently due to high dark respiration rates measured at acidic pH. Weekly growth rates averaged 53% in algae grown in fibreglass tanks aerated with regular air (360 mg L-1 CO2) and 28% in algae grown in tanks aerated with CO2-enriched air (750 mg L-1 CO2). The pH of the seawater medium in which P. linear is was grown increased slightly during the day and only rarely reached 9.0. The pH at the boundary layer of algae submerged in seawater increased in response to light reaching, about pH 8.9 within minutes, or remained unchanged for algae submerged in a CO2-free artificial sea water medium. Photosynthesis of P. linearissaturated at Ci concentrations of seawater (K0.5560 μM at pH 8.2) and showed low photosynthetic affinity for CO2(K0.5 61 μM) at pH 6.0. It is therefore concluded that P. linearisuses primarily CO2 with HCO3 - being an alternative source of Ci for photosynthesis. Its fast growth could be related to the enzyme carbonic anhydrase whose activity was detected intra- and extracellularly.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of environmental parameters on the growthof Porphyra linearis gametophytes was examinedunder controlled conditions, and related to themultilinear regression growth model recently developedfor this seaweed under coastal conditions in theeastern Mediterranean. Growth chambers, a gradienttable, special culture devices and analytical methodswere combined for this culture study.The major factors significantly controlling thegrowth rate of the P. linearis gametophytein glass dishes were: photoperiod, temperature, agein culture, photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), salinityand water dynamics. Maximal growth occurred underdaylength of 12 h, medium temperature (15–20 °C), low PPF (70–140 μmol photon m-2s-1), ambient salinity (30–40 ppt), 1–3 h ofdaily air exposure, and water velocity of 4 cm s-1.Photosynthesis and respiration rates weredominantly affected by daylength and temperature,while the concentration of pigments was dominantlyaffected by PPF and temperature.These conditions correspond well to the optimalnatural growth environment of this local species andare in agreement with the optimum estimated throughthe recently developed outdoor mathematical growthmodel.
