    The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) | India

    Description: Yemaya No. 63, dated May 2021, features articles from US, The Netherlands, Myanmar, Senegal, and an article on women in fisheries and human rights. The article from the US by Linda Behnken argues that a growing coalition of small-scale, community-based fishers is calling for the recognition and protection of Alaska’s invaluable coastal fisheries during COVID-19. The article from the Netherlands by Cornelie Quist looks at the challenges facing women engaged in small-scale fishing and supplying fish through retailers and how they found new ways to directly reach consumers. The conversation between Miranda Bout and Cornelie Quist focuses on how they combined new product development with the use of social media to contact their customer base during the pandemic-induced disruption of traditional marketing chains. The article by Elena Finkbeiner, Juno Fitzpatrick and Whitney Yadao-Evans looks at recent media revelations and scientific research that have brought increased attention to human-rights violations and the myriad social issues facing fisheries, but with a disproportionate focus on labour-rights violations at sea and in industrial fishing operations. The systemic inequalities combined with the effects of COVID-19 exacerbated vulnerabilities of women to health risks, food and livelihood security. The article from Senegal by Aby Dia from Lumière Synergie pour le Développement (LSD), in collaboration with WoMin African Alliance, South Africa, narrates the story of traditional women fish processors from the Bargny who have been, for more than a decade, struggling against development projects that jeopardise their environment, health and livelihoods. In order to preserve their livelihoods, women processors in Senegal have come together to oppose the Tosyali steel project. The European Network of Women in Fisheries and Aquaculture in Europe (AKTEA) urges the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries to integrate gender into all aspects of European fishing policy. The Profile column looks at how Linda Behnken became a fisher in Alaska and how fishing has shaped her individuality and work. Natalie Sattler says that fishing for halibut, sablefish and salmon from the sparkling waters of the Pacific along with her children and at the same time passion for working with the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association and the Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust is an immense challenge.

    Description: Las pesquerías basadas en las agregaciones reproductivas pueden amenazar a especies como los pargos que tienen conductas gregarias durante el período reproductivo. Esta nota ofrece elementos que sugieren la existencia de sitios de agregación no registrados previamente y no protegidos en el Parque Nacional Cayos de San Felipe (PNCSF), región suroccidental de Cuba. La información tradicional obtenida de pescadores locales y trabajadores del parque se corroboró con muestreos cualitativos y cuantitativos de peces de arrecifes y datos de pesquerías locales del 2014. En la época de reproducción de pargos (mayo a julio) se observaron grupos de entre 40-100 ejemplares de Lutjanus cyanopterus, Lutjanus synagris y Lutjanus jocu en los arrecifes de la zona occidental del PNCSF (camellones entre 15-30 m de profundidad cerca del borde de la plataforma). Dentro de esa área, se señalan dos sitios que parecen ser utilizados para agregaciones de predesove, por lo que requieren protección y ser estudiados. Los censos cuantitativos confirmaron que en mayo y junio la zona occidental tiene densidad alta de pargos adultos. También, el pico de captura de estas especies ocurrió en la época reproductiva. Se comprobó que las pesquerías se realizaron durante las migraciones de peces hacia el borde de la plataforma en áreas de la zona occidental del PNCSF, y que más del 60% de los individuos tuvieron gónadas maduras (antes de desovar). Esta información debe incentivar el estudio de las agregaciones de desove en esta región de Cuba, la protección de especies amenazadas y áreas de alta significación ecológica y la implementación de pesquerías sostenibles.
    Description: Fisheries based on reproductive aggregations can threaten species such as snappers that have gregarious behavior during the reproductive period. This note provides evidence to support the existence of aggregation sites, not previously registered and unprotected, in the National Park San Felipe Keys (NPSFK), southwestern region of Cuba. Traditionalinformation obtained from local fishermen and from the park staff was complemented with qualitative and quantitative fish reef censuses and local fisheries data in 2014. In the reproductive season of snappers (May to July) groups of between 40-100 specimens of Lutjanus cyanopterus, Lutja- nus synagris and Lutjanus jocu were observed in the western area of the NPSFK on the reefs (spoor and grove between 20-30 m deep close to the platform edge). Within that area two sites are indicated that can be used for prespawning aggregation, so they require protection and study. Quanti- tative censuses confirmed that in May and June the western zone has high density of adult snappers. Also, the peak of capture of these snapper species occurred in the reproduc- tive season. It was found that fisheries carried out during fish migrations to the edge of the shelf in areas of the western area of the NPSFK and more than 60% of the individuals had mature gonads (before spawning). This information should promote the study of spawning aggregations in this region of Cuba, the protection of threatened species and areas of high ecological significance and the implementation of sustainable fisheries.

    Description: The ICES Workshop on ICES reference points (WKREF2) was tasked review the WKREF1 report and based on the outcome develop updated guidelines for the ICES reference points system and recommendations for ACOM consideration. The WKREF1 report has suggested 5 key recom- mendations to simplify and harmonise the ICES reference points framework representing a ma- jor change to the current guidelines. At WKREF2, we detailed discussions and four key concerns were raised about the proposed approach. The first related to the simplification of rules to define Blim. Around two thirds of category 1 stocks would end up as WKREF1 “Blim Type 2” where Blim would be set as a fraction of B0. The Allee effect or “depensation” maybe more important than previously thought and should be furthered explored for ICES stocks since it has important consequences for Blim. A number of challenges and issues around defining Blim using the current guidelines were documented. Some suggestions on improvement criteria were discussed including using classifiers to define spas- modic stocks and using change point algorithms to address non-stationary productivity regimes. However, further work is need to make these approaches operational and there was no consen- sus that the WKREF1 Blim types should replace the current guidelines. WKREF1 recommended that the FMSY proxy should be based on a biological proxies and should be less than the deterministic FMSY. It was pointed out that the stochastic FMSY estimated in EqSim for example, is lower than the deterministic FMSY and that the current guidelines ensure that the FMSY should not pose a more than 5% risk to Blim. A large amount of work described in WD 1 was carried out to develop an MSE framework to consistency and robustness test a candidate refer- ence point system for North East Atlantic stocks. However, WKREF2 recommended that further work needs to be carried out to condition and test the simulation framework before the conclu- sions could be adopted by ICES and incorporated into the guidelines. A number of considerations for defining MSY related reference points were discussed including using model validation and prediction skill to ensure that ICES provide robust and credible ad- vice. There is evidence that density dependence (DD) is important in the majority of ICES stocks (68% in recruitment and 54% in growth). The correct prediction of the shape and strength of density-dependence in productivity is key to predicting future stock development and providing the best possible long-term fisheries management advice. A suggested approach to use surplus production models (SPMs) to account for DD in FMSY was suggested and discussed but there was no consensus on whether that approach was appropriate. There was consensus that the FECO approach as a means of adapting target fishing mortality to medium-term changes in productiv- ity should be included in the guidelines subject to a benchmark and ACOM approval. While WKREF1 and 2 focused mainly on Category 1 stocks ToR c) called for a “simplified and harmonised set of guidelines for estimating MSY and precautionary reference points applicable in the advice framework across various ICES stock categories.” Ideally the ICES assessment cat- egories should provide equivalent risk across all stocks. This issue was discussed but no recom- mendations emerged. There was no consensus a revised reference point framework was proposed at WKREF2. How- ever, it was agreed that it should be presented here for further discussion at ACOM and other fora. The key feature of the suggested approach is that the stock status evaluation is treated in- dependent of the Advice Rule (AR). The main feature of the system is that the biomass trigger is not linked to a stock status evaluation, it is linked to the expected biomass when fishing at the target fishing mortality, in contrast to the current ICES approach. It also entailed that FMSY would also become an upper limit of fishing mortality and that the advised fishing mortality would be set at or lower than that level. WKREF2 did not discuss what to do in situations where SSB〈 Blim or alternative forms of HCR for the advice rule. Building community understanding and con- sensus around simplified and harmonised guidelines has yet to be achieved. A further workshop WKREF3 will be required to achieve that aim. The report includes 6 recommendations for ACOM consideration.

    Description: The main objective of the workshop was to review the recommendations of WKREF1 and con- sider how these might feed into a new reference points framework and guidelines for ICES. There were a number of presentations on the wider issues of best practice for reference points, the Allee effect, density dependence and the WKIRISH approach. The starting point was to try and develop a set of simplified and harmonised guidelines based on the WKREF1 report rather than evolving the current guidelines to include the WKREF1 conclusions. A key aspect of the meeting was to allow for discussions in order to build a shared understanding of the strengths and weakness of the current framework and of the new framework emerging from WKREF1.

    Description: The ocean's mesopelagic zone (200–1000 m) remains one of the most understudied parts of the ocean despite knowledge that mesopelagic fishes are highly abundant. Apex predators from the surface waters are known to consume these fishes, constituting an important ecological interaction. Some countries have begun exploring the potential harvest of mesopelagic fishes to supply fishmeal and fish oil markets due to the high fish abundance in the mesopelagic zone compared with overfished surface waters. This study explored the economic and ecological implications of a moratorium on the harvest of mesopelagic fishes such as lanternfish off the US West Coast, one of the few areas where such resources are managed. We adapted a bioeconomic decision model to examine the tradeoffs between the values gained from a hypothetical mesopelagic fishery with the potential values lost from declines in predators of mesopelagic fishes facing a reduced prey resource. The economic rationale for a moratorium on harvesting mesopelagics was sensitive both to ecological relationships and the scale of the nonmarket values attributed to noncommercial predators. Using a California Current-based ecological simulation model, we found that most modeled predators of mesopelagic fishes increased in biomass even under high mesopelagic harvest rates, but the changes (either increases or decreases) were small, with relatively few predators responding with more than a 10% change in their biomass. While the ecological simulations implied that a commercial mesopelagic fishery might not have large biomass impacts for many species in the California Current system, there is still a need to further explore the various roles of the mesopelagic zone in the ocean.

    Description: Canada has undertaken commitments to recognize the rights of Indigenous Peoples in fisheries through policies and agreements, including Integrated Fishery Management Plans, the Reconciliation Strategy, and Land Claim Agreements (LCAs). In addition to recognizing rights, these commitments were intended to respect geographic adjacency principles, to enhance the economic viability of Indigenous communities, and to be reflective of community dependence on marine resources. We examined the determinants of quota allocations in commercial fisheries involving Nunatsiavut, Northern Labrador, the first self-governing region for the Inuit peoples in Canada. It has been argued that current fishery allocations for Nunatsiavut Inuit have not satisfied federal commitments to recognize Indigenous rights. Indicators that measure equity in commercial allocations for the turbot or Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) and northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) fisheries were identified and assessed. In these two cases, historical allocations continue to predominate for allocations based upon equity or other social or economic considerations. We illustrate equity-enhancing changes in the quota distribution under scenarios of different levels of inequality aversion, and we make qualitative assessments of the effects of these allocations to Nunatsiavut for socioeconomic welfare. This approach could benefit fisheries governance in Northern Labrador, where federal commitments to equity objectives continue to be endorsed but have not yet been integrated fully into quota allocations.

    Description: The ocean twilight zone (more formally known as the mesopelagic zone) plays a fundamental role in global climate. It is the mid-ocean region roughly 100 to 1000 meters below the surface, encompassing a half-mile deep belt of water that spans more than two-thirds of our planet. The top of the ocean twilight zone only receives 1% of incident sunlight and the bottom level is void of sunlight. Life in the ocean twilight zone helps to transport billions of metric tons (gigatonnes) of carbon annually from the upper ocean into the deep sea, due in part to processes known as the biological carbon pump. Once carbon moves below roughly 1000 meters depth in the ocean, it can remain out of the atmosphere for centuries to millennia. Without the benefits of the biological carbon pump, the atmospheric CO 2 concentration would increase by approximately 200 ppm 1 which would significantly amplify the negative effects of climate change that the world is currently trying to curtail and reverse. Unfortunately, existing scientific knowledge about this vast zone of the ocean, such as how chemical elements flow through its living systems and the physical environment, is extremely limited, jeopardizing the efforts to improve climate predictions and to inform fisheries management and ocean policy development.

    Description: This paper summarizes the results of the experiments on the induced breeding and larval rearing of milkfish (Chanos chanos) during the 1979 season. Milkfish larvae could be reared successfully without the use of trochophore larvae of oysters as feed during the first few days. In order to induce the ovulation of wild adult milkfish a higher dose of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone is required.

    Description: Round scad exploration by purse seine in the waters of western Philippines was conducted from April 22 to May 7, 1998 for a period of five (5) fishing days with a total catch of 7.3 tons and an average of 1.5 tons per setting. Dominant species caught were Decapterus spp. having 70.09% of the total catch, followed by Selar spp. at 12.66% and Rastrelliger spp. 10.70%. Among the Decapterus spp. caught, D. macrosoma attained the highest total catch composition by species having 68.81% followed by D. kurroides and D.russelli with 0.31% and 1.14% respectively. The round scad fishery stock was composed mainly of juvenile fish (less than 13 cm) and Age group II (13 cm to 14 cm). Few large round scad at Age group IV and V (20 cm to 28 cm) stayed at the fishery. Other fishes caught were: Auxis rochei (0.85%), A. thazard (0.12%), Caranx spp. (0.45%), Emmilichthys nitidus (0.58%), Euthynnus affinis (0.42%), Leiognathus ruconius (0.58%), Loligo sp. (0.31%), Megalaspis cordyla (0.09%), Rastrelliger spp. (10.70%), Sardinella longiceps (0.03%), Scomberoides lysan (0.24%), Selar spp. (12.66%), Sphyraena spp. (0.90%), Thunnus albacares (0.96%) and others (1.02%). Tuna and tuna like fishes such as yellowfin tuna, eastern little tuna, bullet tuna, frigate tuna and oceanic squid are distributed in the upper latitudes of the survey area. On the other hand, round scads, big-eyed scads and Indian mackerels are dominantly present in the lower latitudes of the survey area.

    Description: An exploratory tuna longline fishing survey was conducted using the research and training vessels of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, the 1,178 GT MV SEAFDEC and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the 165 GT MV MAYA-MAYA in the South China Sea Waters, West of the Philippines from April to May, 1998. A total of 3,796 hooks was set in sixteen (16) fishing stations. There were no tuna caught during the entire survey but only minor and irrelevant species like the Pacific lancetfish, sharks and an opah species, Lampris guttatus. The important fishing and oceanographic factors during the survey and other research results on longline are described and analyzed. Additional longline studies within and near the Philippines territorial waters are also presented to substantiate the research results of the joint SEAFDEC/BFAR resource exploratory.

    Description: Cholera is an acute specific infection caused by the organism, Vibrio cholera. Diagnosis may be confirmed by the presence of large numbers of the comma-shaped bacilli on direct microscopic examination of a fecal or vomitus smear, and by the isolation of the organism on culture. Fish and shellfish have been identified as vehicles of cholera. Large numbers of V. cholera must usually be ingested to cause cholera. Thus problems often occur when poor handling and inadequate refrigeration have allowed the organism to multiply. Presented in the paper is the methodology of determining the presence of Vibrio cholera in fish and fishery products.

    Description: Fishery statistics in Brunei Darussalam have been collected by the Department of Fisheries since the 1940s. In the early 1980s, a number of statistics were collected, such as catch and effort data of artisanal fishermen, aquaculture statistics, processing statistics as well as data from major wet markets focusing on the amount, prices of marketed fish either from the local fishermen or imported. In 1984, the collection of statistics on commercial fishing was started. The statistics have been used in the formulation of fishery management and development policies as well as for sectoral development. Following a brief account of the responsibility and statistic collections of the Department of Fisheries, an examination is made of employment in the fishery sector, fisheries production, fish marketed and the GDP for the fishery industry. Fisheries in Brunei Darussalam is a very healthy industry, where production is well below the maximum allowable harvestable limit of 20,000 tons at 30%. The Department is embarking to increase production from the capture fishery to reduce the country's dependence on imported fish; the same applies for aquaculture, in order to complement production from the capture fisheries. The processing sector is also increasing in importance, especially with the increase in the number of capture fishery licenses, and the demand for quality and value-added products.

    Description: Food poisoning due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a food-borne infection resulting from the ingestion of a large number of this organism (about 106-109 viable cells). The major symptoms are diarrhea and abdominal pain with headache, fever, and vomiting also occurring. The organisms are excreted during the acute stage of the illness after which they decrease rapidly. The differentiation of V. parahaemolyticus from other pathogenic species of Vibrio is based mainly on salt tolerance, Voges-Proskauer reaction, fermentation of sucrose, and growth at 43°C. Presented in the paper is the methodology of determining the presence of Vibrio cholera in fish and fishery products.

    Notes: An analysis of the two-dimensional temperature field of a square column embedding a heating cylinder is presented. The analysis leads to a solution in finite series which gives rise to rapidly converging numerical results. The series coefficients computed for the extreme case of the cylinder being a line find a way of parametrization, which then furnishes the solutions for finite cylinders up to the case of the cylinder diameter being half of the column thickness. Results in five-digit accuracy are presented. The method is simple and direct. In addition, it retains the same concise formal solution for a variety of boundary conditions.

    Notes: It is shown that existing methods for design of optimal regulators by the Wiener-Hopf procedure must be modified in order to be applicable to unstable and/or nonminimum phase plant or disturbance transfer functions, such as are frequently encountered in the chemical industry. Solutions are developed for three cases: I. stable, but possibly nonminimum phase, plant and disturbance transfer functions; II. minimum phase, but possibly unstable, plant with no restrictions on the disturbance transfer functions; and III. prestabilized, with a proper modification to retain the original control effort inequality constraints, but possibly nonminimum phase plant and disturbance transfer functions. Case III gives the general solution for regulation of linear, time-invariant, lumped-parameter systems. When prestabilization is not necessary, it reduces to case I. Where applicable, solutions by the method of case II frequently involve less algebra than in case III.

    Notes: The Wiener-Hopf procedure for synthesis of optimum constrained linear feedback regulators has been extended in part I to all linear time-invariant lumped parameter systems. The solution is here applied to the control of the output concentration of an exothermic, stirred tank reactor operating close to an unstable steady state, by constrained manipulation of a cooling water flow rate, in the presence of a randomly fluctuating inlet concentration.When the spectral density of disturbance is given (for example, white noise through a first-order time delay, or a series of randomly alternating steps), the optimum controller has three modes: proportional, derivative, and integral with minor feedback. The responses of the nonlinear reactor and the linearized reactor control systems to a series of alternating deterministic step inputs and Gaussian distributed inputs are simulated, and a sensitivity study of the linearized system with respect to variations in process, controller, and disturbance parameters is made in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the method.

    Notes: In this paper, mathematical models for a single adsorbate component present in a gas phase have been developed for isothermal and adiabatic dynamic adsorption-desorption processes with special emphasis on adsorption drying by supported hygroscopic salts. The proposed generalized models are applicable to both an unsupported absorbent bed and a fixed bed of adsorbents impregnated on a supporter which may have nonlinear equilibrium relationships. The partial differential equations governing the dynamic adsorption-desorption processes and the nonlinear equilibrium relations were solved numerically on the digital computer.An experimental study was conducted to measure the adsorption and desorption rates of water vapor by lithium chloride impregnated on a solid supporter, Torvex.The proposed adiabatic adsorption-desorption model has been verified for unsupported adsorbent beds in the cases of water vapor adsorption from air by silica gel and of methane adsorption from a helium-methane mixture by activated carbon. The validity of the generalized adiabatic model for supported adsorbent beds with nonlinear equilibrium relationships was established by a direct comparison of experimental data obtained in this study with the predicted values.

    Notes: Measurements of the effective self-diffusion coefficients for carbon dioxide and methane were performed in the transition pressure range. The experiments utilized carbon-14 tagged gases and semiconductor radiation detectors in a transient type of experiment. A detailed analysis of the errors associated with the experiments indicated that the accuracy of the measurements was near 5%. The results verify that the additive resistance law is valid for the representation in the transition range. The unknown effects of surface diffusion make the values to be employed in this law subject to review. As an example one surface diffusion model is considered.

    Notes: An approach has been developed for predicting rates of interphase mass transfer under conditions of high flux and high concentration level. A rectangular channel device has been used to measure rates of evaporation of four solutes, carbon disulfide, n-pentane, cyclopentane, and ethyl ether, from n-tridecane into flowing nitrogen. The evaporation rate of carbon disulfide agreed with the prediction of the interphase theory up to a carbon disulfide mole fraction of 0.30 in the bulk liquid. For the other three systems, a concentration gradient induced, surface tension driven cellular convection served to increase liquid-phase coefficients substantially. A correlation was obtained for the effect of this cellular motion on the liquid-phase mass transfer coefficient.

    Notes: As a step toward a unified treatment of particulately fluidized beds, a statistical-thermodynamic approach has been investigated, with the smoothed potential cell theory of pure liquids used to establish an equation of state and a collisional-viscosity relation. This treatment has correlated well with experimental data on liquid-fluidized beds, and the same method gives reasonable predictions for gas-fluidized beds. A parameter equivalent to thermodynamic temperature has been identified for fluidized beds, which depends solely upon fluid properties and includes the three-halves power of superficial velocity. This approach should be of value for interpreting other liquidlike properties of fluidized systems.

    Notes: The efficiency of process optimization by mathematical programming can be increased by tearing, that is, rearranging the design equations so as to reduce the number of equality constraints. The structure of a system of equations may be depicted as an undirected bipartite graph; algorithm I-T utilizes this graph to determine an order of solution for the equations which requires no tears. If this is impossible, then algorithm II-T uses indexing in conjunction with algorithm I-T to produce an order which minimizes the number of torn equations. This procedure is extended to the problem of minimum recycle parameters, and the two-way interaction between tearing and algebraic simplification is illustrated.

    Notes: Experimental gas absorption studies for bubbles transported in turbulent pipe flow of water strongly indicate that liquid phase controlled mass transfer is due to surface renewal by turbulent eddies. Predictions of transport behavior from the conditions of turbulent flow cannot be made in support of this mechanism because no satisfactory theory of turbulent transport near a gas-liquid interface is available. This work considers a model of the hydrodynamic behavior near the surface which provides a link between the observed mass transfer behavior and the state of the turbulent field.In this model, the very small scales of turbulent motion are considered to be controlling. These motions are idealized, and their flow and mass transfer behavior are solved analytically. The overall result for eddies of various sizes is related to the turbulent energy spectrum by using only the easily accessible parameter ∊, the energy dissipation rate. This model gives quantitative agreement to within a factor of 2 for three widely different experimental situations including gas-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces. However, the predicted Reynolds number dependence is somewhat higher than the experimental result.The model attempts to clearly define the basic physical process at the interface. Therefore, it indicates the direction for further experimentation needed to clarify the basic relationship between the mass transfer rates in the liquid phase and the hydrodynamic behavior of the turbulent liquid.

    Notes: An experimental study of the photochlorination of propane was undertaken to assess the significance of heterogeneous termination steps (wall reactions). Data were obtained in 2- and 10-mm. I.D. tubular flow reactors with varying oxygen concentrations. The results indicated that homogeneous terminations were dominant in the large reactor, and heterogeneous ones were dominant in the small unit. A kinetic scheme which explained the data was proposed. It included two parallel termination steps: a second-order homogeneous reaction between C3H7. and oxygen and a first-order heterogeneous reaction between C3H7. and the reactor wall.Even though the data were taken in the laminar flow regime, the rate of reaction was a function of Reynolds number for the 10-mm. reactor. Kinetic factors may explain these results, but the reasons are not clear. More research in this area is needed.Data taken in the 10-mm. reactor packed with quartz cylinders gave results similar to those for the 2-mm. reactor. This provided confirming evidence for the proposed scheme of parallel, heterogeneous and homogeneous termination steps.

    Notes: The heat and mass transfer processes in a binary mixture flowing in a parallel plate channel with mass addition at the bounding surfaces are investigated analytically. The rate of mass addition, the temperature, and the mass fraction are arbitrarily prescribed at each of the bounding walls. Similarity solutions are evaluated numerically to yield pressure gradient, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number results for a wide range of each of three governing parameters. It is found that increasingly strong surface mass addition markedly increases the magnitude of the axial pressure gradient. Mass addition decreases the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers at the channel wall at which the injection is strongest but may actually increase these moduli at the opposite wall. A generalizing analysis is performed to accommodate phase change processes as well as to accommodate the specification of plenum conditions rather than wall surface conditions. Application is made to the evaporation of liquid water by an air stream. It is shown that the rate of evaporation is augmented as the rate of air injection increases, but the extent of the augmentation is less than the causative increase in the air flow rate.

    Notes: A theoretical analysis of the laminar-turbulent transition phenomenon is presented for the case of steady, isothermal, fully developed flow of Newtonian fluids in straight ducts of constant isosceles triangular cross section. As a result of this analysis, the simultaneous existence of macroscopically large stable regions of laminar and turbulent flow are predicted to occur during the transition phenomenon. The existence of this special type of flow field, which has not been previously predicted theoretically, is shown to be a consequence of the presence of an asymmetric shear stress distribution. The results of an experimental study are also presented. These data verify the predictions made by the theoretical analysis.

    Notes: Information about the transition state of a chemical reaction is quite useful for the determination of mechanisms and for design of solvents for the reaction. High pressure kinetic studies, if sufficiently accurate, provide the required data. This work reports a new technique developed for measuring rates of chemical reactions in solution at high pressure. This method involves in situ mixing of reactants under pressure and direct sampling for analysis, eliminating large errors of temperature equilibration and time measurement inherent in existing techniques, and thus yielding more accurate results. Experimental results for the Diels-Alder reaction of isoprene and maleic anhydride are reported at pressures up to more than 6,000 atm.

    Notes: The problem of mass transfer with nonequilibrium at, and significant convection across, the interface has been studied by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The inner solution for small values of t or z/Um was found in terms of fk functions which were obtained in closed analytical form. The outer solution for large values of t or z/Um was found in terms of gk functions which had to be determined numerically. With these solutions, calculation of concentratration distributions or instantaneous rates of mass transfer is straightforward, but determination of the total amount of mass transfer as a function of time is complicated by the lack of an intersection wherein the inner and outer solutions overlap and converge. To avoid the need for graphical interpolation and integration of the interfacial concentration as a function of time to obtain the total mass transferred, the constant of integration M1 is found to be (-kγ\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \sqrt \pi $\end{document}/2h) by assuming that the ratio of mass transferred with an equilibrium interface to that with a nonequilibrium interface is independent of whether or not Vy convection is negligible in the system as t → ∞.The effect of a nonequilibrium interface is greatest for small t in unsteady systems and z/Um in steady state systems. This occurs because the departure from their equilibrium values of the interfacial concentrations of the phases in contact is greatest when they are first brought into contact. The larger the interfacial mass transfer coefficient α, the smaller is the time required for the interfacial concentrations to achieve their equilibrium values.Other things being equal, the rate of mass transfer is greatest when the driving force xA*-xA0 is greatest. Since the departure from equilibrium at the interface is greatest for small values of time, it follows that nonequilibrium interfacial phenomena can be observed most easily in systems where the rate of mass transfer is high. This is also the case when one cannot neglect the effect of finite velocity at the interface which is shown in the present work to be a significant effect.The method of analysis can be used to study a variety of problems in addition to the specific system considered here. In particular, both batch and flow reverse osmosis problems can be attacked by the present approach.

    Notes: The mechanism of diffusion in an absorbent pore was studied by applying adsorption rate data to the Damköhler equation. Most of the data were taken in the multimolecular region of the nitrogen-silica gel adsorption isotherm. Vapor-phase and adsorbed-phase contributions to the total transport were separated. Vapor-phase transport increased with temperature and was most dominant at relative pressures of 0.4 to 0.6. Adsorbed-phase diffusivities were of the order of 10-2  -  10-3 sq. cm./sec. and showed some dependence on the amount adsorbed at surface coverages greater than 1.5 molecular layers.

    Notes: A Burnett type of apparatus was built for 12,000 lb./sq.in. pressure and temperatures of 25° to 100°C. Isothermal expansions were run on methane, ethylene, and four binary mixtures at 25°, 50°, and 75°C., and compressibility factors were derived from the pressure ratio observations.From the experimental data, second and third virial coefficients were derived by two techniques, that is, the slope-intercept and the multiple regressions curve-fit of the data by the density-series virial equation. A comparison of these virial coefficients with those from the different empirical equations of state indicates areas of needed improvements in these equations. Second virial cross coefficients were also obtained.

    Notes: By expressing the meniscus height and the sine of the angle between the horizontal and a tangent to the meniscus curve as simple exponential functions of radial position, a new calculational procedure for determining surface tensions from menisci has been developed. These simple functions, when combined with the Laplace-Young equation, generated three useful equations for calculating surface tensions as a function of radial positions. The overall procedure by using the three equations and five smoothing methods was tested on both experimental and calculated menisci. The results from the procedure for the calculated menisci agreed within 1.5% with the original surface tensions used to generate the meniscus. The agreement of values generated with the method and the comparison method previously reported for experimental menisci was within ±8% in general and within ±2% for the best formed menisci.

The reactor behaves as a well-stirred tank, and data have been obtained at 3,000 lb./sq.in.abs. over the temperature range 300° to 400°C.Rate data have been obtained for commercial zinc chromite catalyst in particle form and for the commercial ¼-in. pellets. The effectiveness factors derived from these experiments have been used to estimate the tortuosity of the pellets; it is found to agree qualitatively with the value measured from experiments on pure diffusion in a catalyst pellet.

    Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation of the separation achieved in a column crystallizer which utilizes a spiral conveyor was conducted to determine the effect of variables associated with continuous flow operation. A system that exhibits negligible solid solubility was used. Several feed mixtures containing less than 31,000 p.p.m. weight cyclohexane in benzene were employed. The principal variables evaluated in this study in a column of constant length were the feed position, internal crystal rate, and flow rates of terminal streams. A mathematical model is developed which considers axial dispersion and mass transfer between the liquid adhering to the crystals and the bulk liquid. The model satisfactorily explains the effect of the variables associated with continuous flow operation and shows that axial dispersion is more dominant in continuous flow than in total reflux operation. It is shown that multiple pass or cascade operation is necessary to produce material of purity higher than a critical level which is related to the feed composition. This occurs because of impurities in the crystal phase which are likely caused by volumetric inclusions.

    Notes: The effect of viscosity and diffusivity variations on concentration polarization during the ultrafiltration of protein solutions in two-dimensional stagnation flows is investigated by numerical integration of the equations of continuity and motion. It is found that these effects are surprisingly small and insensitive to the forms of concentration dependence postulated. The high Schmidt numbers and low permeation rates characteristic of these systems result in considerable simplification of the analysis and permit use of a modified Chilton-Colburn relation for predicting the onset of sludge formation at the membrane-solution interface. The predicted dependence on Schmidt number agrees with published experimental data for other boundary-layer flows and suggests the possibility of improved prediction of equipment performance.

    Notes: Free convection between two vertical coaxial cylinders was studied by solving the governing transport equations as an initial-value problem. The coupled, nonlinear, partial differential equations were converted into a set of difference equations by use of an alternating-direction implicit finite-difference numerical scheme. Twenty-four different combinations of Prandtl and Grashof numbers, and height to annular spacing ratios were used to characterize the problem. The results are presented primarily in the form of contour maps for the steady-state isotherms and streamlines.For Rayleigh numbers greater than 5 × 103, a fully developed boundary-layer flow was found to exist in the cavity. The interior region of the annulus was found to be thermally stratified and to possess a nearly uniform vertical temperature gradient, with a unicellular flow pattern being generated.With Rayleigh numbers of 5 × 104 and greater, it was found that the flow patterns could not be properly described with a grid spacing of 1/10. The variation of the steady-state mean Nusselt number with Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers and with geometric ratios was also investigated.

    Notes: Experimental concentration profiles throughout a fourteen plate column approaching steady state at total reflux were obtained for mixtures of benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene. The concentration profiles are characterized by a large movement of the middle component, toluene, through the column so that its maximum concentration shifts from plate to plate until steady state is reached.Computer runs were made in which the column variables were specified to be, as nearly as possible, those observed or calculated for the experimental runs. The computer results indicated the same behavior as the experimental runs, and the concentration profiles were in fair agreement. Thus, the computer model and calculation procedure used could replace the real column for many purposes. Inaccuracies in the computer simulation are due more to inadequate information about the characteristics of the real column than to deficiencies of the computer model.

    Notes: The photodecomposition of aqueous solutions of formic acid was studied as a model reaction for removing organic pollutants from water. The process was carried out in a tubular-flow reactor, operated continuously. The cylindrical reactor was irradiated from the outside by placing the cylindrical lamp and the reactor at the foci of an elliptical reflector. Measurements made at differential operating conditions permitted calculation of rates of reaction as a function of formic acid concentration and light intensity for the temperature range 25° to 60°C. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide were the only observed products of the decomposition.The rate was first order in absorbed light intensity and between zero and first order in formic acid. These results correspond to a combination of chain and non-chain kinetics occurring simultaneously. Rate constant ratios and quantum yields were calculated from the data and the kinetics model.A few measurements were made by adding ferric chloride and ferrous chloride to the feed to the reactor. An order of magnitude increase in rate was observed with these sensitizers.

The product stream is enriched in the component exhibiting the lowest coefficient of adsorption.A mathematical model based upon the assumption of instantaneous equilibrium between the gas phase and the adsorbed gas was formulated and solved to simulate the periodic, adsorption process. The measured nitrogen content of the product gas stream was found to correlate with the ratio of the product gas rate to the feed gas rate.At 24°C. the calculated pressure response, feed gas flow rate, and product gas composition correspond favorably with related experimental measurements for all values of the feed gas pressure, cycling frequency, and product gas flow rate within the ranges investigated.

    Notes: The optimal control problem for multiple beds is formulated and a distributed maximum principle derived. Gradient methods are then used to synthesize the optimal control policies for some examples in three-bed isothermal and adiabatic reactors. Finally, examples are worked to illustrate the computational algorithm in adiabatic beds when optimal catalyst loading is to be determined, and when it is desired to distribute the feed in an optimal fashion between the beds. Reasonably good convergence was obtained in all the examples, so that the method appears quite feasible for determining optimal control policies in multiple reactors subject to catalyst decay.

    Notes: The nature of flow choking has been studied as steam-water mixtures are passed through a tube with ever increasing pressure gradient. Choked flow for two-phase, one-component mixtures has been characterized with a separated flow model as resulting from maximization of the ratio of gas to liquid velocities, or slip ratio. Slip ratios at choking were measured and found to increase from 1.2 to 5.0 at 30 lb./sq.in. exit plane pressure with decrease in quality from 0.95 to 0.02. Separated models predict either 9.3 or 28.4 with no quality dependence. The difference is attributed to liquid entrainment. Flow regimes were observed to vary from purely entrained to annular entrained to slug entrained as quality decreased. Normal shock waves were observed in the free jet at qualities above 0.25. Choking flow rates were predicted with an average error of less than 2% with a stagnation energy balance model using an empirically developed slip ratio relation corrected for entrainment.

    Notes: Relationships have been developed for the calculation of second virial coefficients of polar fluids from the critical constants, acentric factor w, and fourth parameter x of the substance. Coefficients for the expansion of the reduced second virial coefficient in w and x are presented for 0.64 ≤TR ≤ 0.94. Comparisons with available experimental data indicate that good results are obtained by the method of this study for most polar fluids. The second virial coefficient for water is found to exhibit anomalous behavior. Procedures have also been established for extending the relationships for pure fluids to the second virial coefficient of mixtures containing nonpolar or polar components.

    Notes: The modification of the Blake-Kozeny equation for porous media flow using the power law has been shown to hold for molten polymers as well as for the previous cases for polymer solutions. The present work extended the correlation of friction factor with Reynolds number an additional three decades.It was also shown, however, that the modified Blake-Kozeny equation broke down when bed shear rates were in the range of excessive curvature on the polymer flow curves (shear stress-shear rate). In such cases it is suggested that the Newtonian Blake-Kozeny equation, together with apparent viscosity data, could be used to correlate such porous media flow of non-Newtonians.Appearance of viscoelastic effects at the critical Deborah number value of 0.05 predicted earlier were not found to hold. The data of the present investigation show that such a critical value must be at least 0.19 or even higher. This result helps to resolve partially the anomalous results obtained by previous investigators.

    Notes: A three-stage procexsss of reduction of acid chromate (HCrO4-), with NaHSO3 followed by precipitation of Cr(III) with NaOH followed by flotation with an anionic surfactant, provides 97% removal of chromium from aqueous suspensions containing 48.3 mg./liter Cr (0.929 mM). The required dosage of surfactant (sodium laurylsulfate) is 0.093 mole SLS/mole Cr, compared to a dosage of 1.1 mole cationic surfactant/mole Cr, used to ion float soluble acid chromate. The precipitate flotation process is pH dependent: below pH 6.3, soluble chromium species become appreciable and the flotation results agree with calculated soluble chromium concentrations; above pH 9.7, the charge of the precipitate is reversed, as indicated by surface potential measurements. The optimum pH range for flotation is 7.0 to 8.8. The effect of initial surfactant concentration on the flotation efficiency is established. Small quantities of calcium enhance the flotation of Cr, while higher concentrations, 0.5 mM and greater, decrease flotation efficiency. For suspensions with a doubled chromium concentration (96.6 mg./liter), the optimum pH range for flotation is lowered and narrowed to 6.3 to 6.5, indicating modifications in particle surface characteristics validated by measurements of surface potential and surfactant adsorption. Eighty-seven percent flotation is achieved at a 0.093 mole/mole ratio.
