    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this report is to describe the research programs and program activities of the US Department of Energy (DOE) that most directly relate to topics in the field of environmental geology. In this light, the mission of the DOE and the definition of environmental geology will be discussed. In a broad sense, environmental geology is that branch of earth science that emphasizes the entire spectrum of human interactions with the physical environment that include environmental health, mineral exploration and exploitation, waste management, energy use and conservation, global change, environmental law, natural and man-made hazard assessment, and land-use planning. A large number of research, development, and demonstration programs are under DOE's administration and guidance that directly or indirectly relate to topics in environmental geology. The primary mission of the DOE is to contribute to the welfare of the nation by providing the scientific foundation, technology, policy, and institutional leadership necessary to achieve efficiency in energy use, diversity in energy sources, a more productive and competitive economy, improved environmental quality, and a secure national defense. The research and development funding effort has most recently been redirected toward greater utilization of clean fossil fuels, especially natural gas, weatherization, renewable energy, energy efficiency, fusion energy, and high-energy physics. This paper will summarize the role that environmental geology has played and will continue to play in the execution of DOE's mission and the energy options that DOE has investigated closely. The specific options are those that center around energy choices, such as alternative-fueled transportation, building technologies, energy-efficient lighting, and clean energy.

    Notes: Abstract More than 3,200 indoor radon-222 (222Rn) measurements were made seasonally in an area of about 1,000 square kilometers of the Coastal Plain and Piedmont physiographic provinces in Virginia, U.S.A. Results of these measurements indicate that some geological units are associated, on the average, with twice as much indoor222Rn as other geological units, and that indoor222Rn varies seasonally. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to test whether indoor222Rn concentrations for data gathered over the winter and summer seasons differ significantly by rock unit. The tests concluded that indoor222Rn concentrations for different rock units were not equal at the 5-percent significance level. The rocks associated with the highest median indoor222Rn concentration are specific rocks in the Mesozoic Culpeper basin, including shale and siltstone units with Jurassic diabase intrusives, and mica schists in the Piedmont physiographic province. The pre-Triassic Peters Creek Schist has the highest ranking in terms of indoor222Rn concentration. The rocks associated with the lowest indoor222Rn concentrations include coastal plain sediments, the Occoquan Granite, Falls Church Tonalite, Piney Branch Mafic and Ultramafic complex, and unnamed mafic and ultramafic inclusions, respectively. The rocks have been ranked according to observed222Rn concentration by transforming the average rank of indoor222Rn concentrations to z scores.

    Notes: Summary In order to evaluate a possible role for tissue phosphate or phosphorylated compounds in mediating the increase in plasma 1,25-(OH)2-D3 levels during dietary phosphate deprivation, measurements of total and acid-soluble renal cortical phosphate content have been made in both intact and hypophysectomized (hypox) rats eating a normal diet and also after four days of dietary phosphate deprivation. Similar measurements were also made in phosphate-deprived hypophysectomized rats replaced with growth hormone (GH). Total and acid-soluble renal cortical phosphate content averaged 81±8 µmol/g and 4.1±0.6 µmol/g, respectively, in intact rats eating the normal diet and were not significantly altered after phosphate deprivation despite a fall in plasma phosphate of about 40% and a fourfold increase in plasma 1,25-(OH)2-D3 levels. Total and acid-soluble renal cortical phosphate content levels were higher in hypox rats, averaging 92±8 µmol/g and 4.9±0.7 µmol/g, respectively, but also did not change after phosphate deprivation. Replacement of phosphate-deprived hypox rats with GH resulted in a further fall in plasma phosphate and a significant increase in plasma 1,25-(OH)2-D3 levels, but there was no change in either total or acid-soluble renal cortical phosphate content. The distribution of organophosphorus compounds in the acid-soluble phosphate fraction in these experiments was also evaluated using31P NMR spectroscopy. Although there appeared to be an increase in the total concentration of organophosphorus compounds after phosphate deprivation, this effect was not altered by hypophysectomy or by replacement of phosphate-deprived hypox rats with GH. These data suggest that unless phosphate deprivation affects only a small or specific cellular phosphate pool, some factor other than renal cell inorganic phosphate content must initiate the increase in renal 1,25-(OH)2-D3 synthesis that occurs during phosphate deprivation.

    Notes: Photolysis of the group 6 (Cr, Mo, W) metal carbonyls in the gas phase, at excimer laser wavelengths, may lead to more than one primary product. Branching ratios between these products have been measured as a function of photolysis wavelength, buffer gas pressure, and temperature using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. The results are modeled using a sequential dissociation mechanism in which branching ratios are determined by competition between unimolecular dissociation and collisional relaxation. The sensitivity of the results to thermochemical input parameters and assumptions concerning energy disposal mechanisms is discussed. Under qualified assumptions the branching ratio measurements provide estimates for CO bond dissociation energies for coordinatively unsaturated metal carbonyls. For Mo and W the individual bond dissociation energies are close to the average values but for Cr the first three ligands coordinated are significantly less strongly bound than the last three. This finding is discussed in terms of recent ab initio calculations on bonding in metal carbonyls.

    Notes: The use of willow cuttings for streambank stabilization is a common practice in riparian ecosystems throughout the United States. Many environmental factors govern the outcome of such planting. However, other factors such as preplanting treatments, planting methods, and physiological status of cuttings (dormant vs. actively growing) may also be crucial in determining the survival of willow cuttings. Actively growing (nondormant) Black willow (Salix nigra) cuttings, 30 cm in length and 1 cm in diameter at the base, were subjected to three soaking treatments (0, 7, and 15 days) prior to planting. Following the initial treatment, cuttings were grown in a greenhouse in pots under three soil moisture regimes (well-watered but not flooded, permanently flooded, and intermittently flooded). Plant gas exchange, growth, biomass, and survival were measured. Results demonstrated that soaking for 7 days was beneficial to early development of cuttings in the well-watered (control) soil moisture regime, enhancing percent bud flush and survival significantly. However, 15 days of soaking proved to be detrimental to survival of cuttings irrespective of soil moisture regimes. Results also demonstrated that the beneficial effects of 7-day soaking were limited to the well-watered soil moisture regime but not to the flooded or intermittently flooded regimes. Soaking nondormant cuttings may be worthwhile if the planting site is likely to present ample soil moisture but nonflooded conditions to the transplanted cuttings.
