    Description: Rationale: Stable carbon isotope ratios have many applications in natural sciences. In the first worldwide interlaboratory proficiency test, the discrepancies in measured δ13CDIC values of natural waters were up to σ = ±3‰. Therefore, we continued the investigation on the analytical data quality assurance of individual laboratories and internal consistency among laboratories worldwide. Methods: We designed and performed an interlaboratory comparison exercise for δ13C analyses of ten water and two solid samples (Na2CO3, CaCO3), including two synthetic samples prepared by dissolving the carbonates individually. Three laboratories analyzed an additional sample set to assess solution stability, at least one month after the first set analysis period. The δ13C values were measured using dual inlet isotope ratio mass spectrometry (DI-IRMS) or continuous flow (CF)-IRMS. Results: The δ13C values of solid Na2CO3 and its aqueous solution were −5.06 ± 0.21‰and 5.32 ± 0.24‰, respectively, while the δ13C value of solid CaCO3 was −4.49 ± 0.93‰. Similarly, the lake water has a consistent value (2.45 ± 0.19‰). The δ13C values of geothermal water have a wide dispersion among individual laboratory measurements and among those of different laboratories; however, a trend exists in the δ13C values measured at the three sampling points of each well. Conclusions: The δ13C values of solid Na2CO3 and its solution, and lake water (i.e. DIC concentration samples 〉100 mg/L carbon) are consistent among all the participating laboratories. The dispersion in the δ13C values of solid CaCO3 is associated with its lower chemical affinity than that of Na2CO3. The poor reproducibility in the δ13C values of geothermal fluids, collected at three points of a geothermal well, despite overall consistent trends regarding their collection points suggests inadequate sample handling (atmospheric CO2 exchange) and/or inappropriate analytical approaches (incomplete H3PO4 acid reaction).

    Description: The 2019 M7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake was the strongest one in the last 20 years in California (United States). In a multiparametric fashion, we collected data from the lithosphere (seismicity), atmosphere (temperature, water vapor, aerosol, and methane), and ionosphere (ionospheric parameters from ionosonde, electron density, and magnetic field data from satellites). We analyzed the data in order to identify possible anomalies that cannot be explained by the typical physics of each domain of study and can be likely attributed to the lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling (LAIC), due to the preparation phase of the Ridgecrest earthquake. The results are encouraging showing a chain of processes that connect the different geolayers before the earthquake, with the cumulative number of foreshocks and of all other (atmospheric and ionospheric) anomalies both accelerating in the same way as the mainshock is approaching.

    Description: This paper reports the analysis of soil 222Rn data recorded over 7-years in the volcanic caldera of Campi Flegrei (Naples-Italy). The relationship between Radon activity concentration and several geophysical, geochemical and meteorological parameters, influencing the gas emissions, is estimated by the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method. The analysis goals are: the estimation (replication) of the Radon time series from influencing parameters, the forecasting of an unknown part of it, and the search for anomalies. Results prove: (i) the effectiveness of the ANN method; (ii) Radon follow the periods of agitation of the caldera, demonstrated by the comparison with previous works using different methods.

    Description: This is a seven-year study (1/7/2011-31/12/2017) of radon monitoring at two sites of Campi Flegrei caldera (Neaples, Southern Italy) that in the last 70 years experienced repeated phases of volcanic unrest. The sites are equipped with devices for radon detection, based on the spectrometry analysis of the α-particles of radon daughters. A hybrid method, as combination of three known methods, is applied for the identification of residuals (anomalies) and trends of the time series of Radon. The results are compared with the following indicators of current caldera unrest: the tremor caused by the major fumarolic vent registered by a seismic station; the cumulative of background seismicity; the maximum vertical deformation acquired by GPS networks during the current phase of uplift; the temperature-pressure of the hydrothermal system estimated based on gas geo-indicators. The comparisons show strong correlation among independent signals and suggest that the extension of the area affected by current Campi Flegrei crisis is larger than the area of seismicity and of intense hydrothermal activity from which the radon stations are 1-4 km away. These results represent an absolute novelty in the study of a such calderic area and mark a significant step forward in the use and interpretation of the radon signal.

    Description: In their comments Bonini et al. argue that our seismotectonic interpretation of the Emilia 2012 seismic sequence does not agree with observations, and follow three lines of arguments to support their statement. These concern the structural interpretation of seismic reflection profiles, the relationship between seismogenic sources and seismicity patterns, and the fit of inferred fault geometry to InSAR observations. These lines of arguments are mostly repeating what has been previously presented by the same authors, and none of them, as discussed in detail in our reply, presents a strong case against our structural interpretation, that, we are convinced, does not conflict with the available data. The two adjacent rupture surfaces outlined by accurately relocated aftershocks are an indication of the presence of two different active fault planes. Interpretation of seismic profiles supports seismological observation and indicates the occurrence of relevant along-strike changes in structural style. These pieces of information have been integrated to build a new seismotectonic interpretation for the area of the Emilia 2012 seismic sequence. Analysis of geodetic data from the area of the Emilia earthquakes has produced very different models of the fault planes; unlike what has been stated by Bonini et al., who see a difficult fit to InSAR data for the fault planes we have identified, the most recent results are consistent with our interpretation that see a steep fault in the upper 8–10 km under the Mirandola anticline. We point out that the geological structures in the subsurface of the Ferrara Arc do change along strike, and the attempt of Bonini et al. to explain both the May 20 and May 29 sequences using a single cross section is not appropriate.

    Description: Following the 2004 seismic unrest at Tenerife and the 2011–2012 submarine eruption at El Hierro, the number of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observation sites in the Canary Islands (Spain) has increased, offering scientists a useful tool with which to infer the kinematics and present-day surface deformation of the Canary sector of the Atlantic Ocean. We take advantage of the common-mode component filtering technique to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the velocities retrieved from the daily solutions of 18 permanent GNSS stations distributed in the Canaries. The analysis of GNSS time series spanning the period 2011–2017 enabled us to characterize major regions of deformation along the archipelago through the mapping of the 2D infinitesimal strain field. By applying the triangular segmentation approach to GNSS velocities, we unveil a variable kinematic behaviour within the islands. The retrieved extension pattern shows areas of maximum deformation west of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. For the submarine main seismogenic fault between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, we simulated the horizontal deformation and strain due to one of the strongest (mbLg 5.2) earthquakes of the region. The seismic areas between islands, mainly offshore Tenerife and Gran Canaria, seem mainly influenced by the regional tectonic stress, not the local volcanic activity. In addition, the analysis of the maximum shear strain confirms that the regional stress field influences the E–W and NE–SW tectonic lineaments, which, in accordance with the extensional and compressional tectonic regimes identified, might favour episodes of volcanism in the Canary Islands.

    Description: Chemical and physical responses of groundwater to seismicity have been documented for thousands of years. Among the waves produced by earthquakes, Rayleigh waves can spread to great distances and produce hydrogeological perturbations in response to their passage. In this work, the groundwater level, which was continuously recorded in a monitoring well in Central Italy between July 2014 and December 2019, exhibited evident responses to dynamic crustal stress. In detail, 18 sharp variations of the groundwater level due to worldwide Mw ≥ 6.5 earthquakes were observed. Apart from earthquakes that occurred in Papua New Guinea and those with a hypocentral depth 〉 150 km, all far away Mw ≥ 7.6 earthquakes produced impulsive oscillations of groundwater. As the earthquake magnitude decreased, only some earthquakes with 6.5 ≤ Mw 〈 7.6 caused groundwater level perturbations, depending on the data acquisition frequency and epicentral distance from the monitoring well. A clear correlation between earthquake distance and magnitude in hydrogeological responses was found. Our results shed light on the hydrosensitivity of the study site and on the characteristics of fractured aquifer systems. Detecting the water table variations induced by distant earthquakes is another step towards a correct identification of (preseismic) hydrogeological changes due to near-field seismicity.

    Description: Seismic microzonation represents a basic tool for prevention activity planning and land management. An extensive and detailed microzonation study was performed with reference to the territory of the Municipality of Cavezzo, damaged during the seismic sequence hitting Emilia-Romagna Region, Northern Italy, in 2012. In this paper, we discuss the work carried out to characterize the spatial variability of ground motion amplification due to local soil conditions in the municipality area. An inter- and multi-disciplinary approach is presented, involving geotechnical engineers, geophysicists, geologists and seismologists from different institutions, to thoroughly characterize the territory using complementary techniques with different level of resolution and confidence. A considerable amount of geomorphological, geological, hydrogeological, seismological, geotechnical and geophysical investigations was collected and processed for the purpose. A GIS-based (Geographic Information System) platform was initially setup to manage the gathered data, which now includes the results of about 1000 geotechnical and geophysical tests. Such an extended dataset was then used as a primary constraint for the creation of a comprehensive pseudo-3D geotechnical and seismo-stratigraphic model of the territory, consisting of a dense grid of one-dimensional vertical profiles to depict the variability of the soil properties over the area. The model was finally used as input for linear-equivalent ground response analysis. For the calculation of the amplification factors, special emphasis was given to the treatment and propagation of the uncertainties of the model parameters, whose different realizations have been accounted through a logic tree approach.

    Description: The city of Naples (Campanian region, Southern Italy) has been hit by the strongest earthquakes located inside the seismogenic areas of the Southern Apennines, as well as by the volcano-tectonic earthquakes of the surrounding areas of the Campi Flegrei, Ischia and Vesuvius volcanic districts. An analysis of the available seismic catalogues shows that in the last millennium, more than 100 earthquakes have struck Naples with intensities rating I to III on the Mercalli–Cancani–Sieberg (MCS) scale over the felt level. Ten of these events have exceeded the damage level, with a few of these possessing an intensity greater than VII MCS. The catastrophic earthquakes of 1456 (I0 = XI MCS), 1688 (I0 = XI MCS) and 1805 (I0 = X MCS) occurred in the Campania–Molise Apennines chain, produced devastating e ects on the urban heritage of the city of Naples, reaching levels of damage equal to VIII MCS. In the 20th century, the city of Naples was hit by three strong earthquakes in 1930 (I0 = X MCS), 1962 (I0 = IX MCS) and 1980 (I0 = X MCS), all with epicenters in the Campania and Basilicata regions. The last one is still deeply engraved in the collective memory, having led to the deaths of nearly 3000 individuals and resulted in the near-total destruction of some Apennine villages. Moreover, the city of Naples has also been hit by ancient historical earthquakes that originated in the Campanian volcanic districts of Campi Flegrei, Vesuvio and Ischia, with intensities up to VII–VIII MCS (highest in the Vesuvian area). Based on the intensity and frequency of its past earthquakes, the city of Naples is currently classified in the second seismic category, meaning that it is characterized by “seismicity of medium energy”. In this paper, we determine the level of damage su ered by Naples and its monuments as a result of the strongest earthquakes that have hit the city throughout history, highlighting its repetitiveness in some areas. To this aim, we reconstructed the seismic history of some of the most representative urban monuments, using documentary and historical sources data related to the e ects of strong earthquakes of the Southern Apennines on the city of Naples. The ultimate purpose of this study is to perform a seismic macro-zoning of the ancient center of city and reduce seismic risk. Our contribution represents an original elaboration on the existing literature by creating a damage-density map of the strongest earthquakes and highlighting, for the first time, the areas of the city of Naples that are most vulnerable to strong earthquakes in the future. These data could be of fundamental importance to the construction of detailed maps of seismic microzones. Our study contributes to the mitigation of seismic risk in the city of Naples, and provides useful advice that can be used to protect the historical heritage of Naples, whose historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

    Description: Few palaeoclimate archives beyond the polar regions preserve continuous and datable palaeotemperature proxy time series over multiple glacial-interglacial cycles. This hampers efforts to develop a more coherent picture of global patterns of past temperatures. Here we show that Mg concentrations in a subaqueous speleothem from an Italian cave track regional sea-surface temperatures over the last 350,000 years. The Mg shows higher values during warm climate intervals and converse patterns during cold climate stages. In contrast to previous studies, this implicates temperature, not rainfall, as the principal driver of Mg variability. The depositional setting of the speleothem gives rise to Mg partition coefficients that are more temperature dependent than other calcites, enabling the effect of temperature change on Mg partitioning to greatly exceed the effects of changes in source-water Mg/Ca. Subaqueous speleothems from similar deep-cave environments should be capable of providing palaeotemperature information over multiple glacial-interglacial cycles.

    Description: We investigated whether the joint inversion of geodetic and stress direction data can constrain long‐term fault slip rates in the central Apennines, and ultimately how extension is partitioned among fault slip and bulk lithosphere permanent strain. Geodetic velocities are collected in the fault interseismic stage with steady secular deformation; thus, long‐term estimates can be derived with a model of elastically unloading seismogenic faults within a viscously deforming lithosphere. As the average spacing of permanent Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) stations is similar to the average length of seismogenic faults (25–35 km), if not larger, we decided to merge permanent and temporary GNSS measurements, resulting in a denser geodetic data set. Given that most normal faults in the Apennines have slip rates around or below 1 mm/a, and most campaign GNSS velocities carry similar uncertainties, simple local back slip models cannot be applied. More sophisticated modeling is required to extract reasonable bulk deformation rates and long‐term fault slip rates at signal‐to‐noise ratio of order unity. Given the spatial distribution of the GNSS network, we estimated the long‐term slip rate of seven major fault systems that are in satisfactory agreement with available geological slip rates. The resulting spatial distribution of bulk deformation rates locally fits short‐term transients; in other cases, they represent the currently unclear signature of tectonic processes like upper‐crustal viscoplastic deformation and aseismic slip, or indicate missing faults in the adopted database. We conclude that the time is ripe for determining fault slip rates using geodetic and stress direction data, particularly where fault activity rates are hard to determine geologically.

    Description: In the last years, monitoring systems based on low-cost and miniaturized sensors (MEMS) revealed as a very successful compromise between the availability of data and their quality. Also applications in the field of seismic and structural monitoring have been constantly increasing in term of number and variety of functions. Among these applications, the implementation of systems for earthquake early warning is a cuttingedge topic, mainly for its relevance for the society as millions of peoples in various regions of the world are exposed to high seismic hazard. This paper introduces the optimization of an already established seismic (and structural) monitoring system, that would make it suitable for the implementation of the earthquake early warning. In particular, the sampling code has been improved and a new triggering algorithm able to automatically detect the ground shaking due to the propagation of the seismic waves has been developed. The preliminary results indicate that the system is very flexible and easy to implement, and encourage to perform further developing steps.

    Description: The stable isotope composition of living and of Holocene Mytilidae shells was measured in the area of Camarones (Chubut, Argentina). The most striking results were the high 18O values measured in samples older than ca. 6.1 cal ka BP. In the younger samples, the 18O values remained substantially stable and similar to those of living specimens. Analysis of the data revealed the possibility for this isotopic shift to be driven mainly by changes in temperature probably accompanied by minor changes in salinity, suggesting cooler seawater before 6.1 cal ka BP, with a maximum possible temperature shift of ca. 5 C. A possible explanation of this change can be related to a northward position of the confluence zone of the Falkland and Brazilian currents. This is consistent with the data obtained in marine cores, which indicate a northerly position of the confluence in the first half of the Holocene. Our data are also in line with the changes in wind strength and position of the Southern WesterliesWind, as reconstructed in terrestrial proxies from the Southernmost Patagonia region.

    Description: Multivariate analysis of the elemental composition of hemipelagic sedimentary successions has provided invaluable information about palaeoenvironmental evolution, including records of short-lived Eocene hyperthermal events. However, few studies have analyzed the sedimentary record of these climatic events in turbidite-rich continental margin successions. In order to test the usefulness of multivariate statistical techniques (factor and cluster analysis) in palaeonvironmental and palaeoclimatic research on turbiditic successions, the lowermost Eocene Solondota section, which accumulated on the North Iberian continental margin, was studied. A prominent negative carbon isotope excursion from Solondota was correlated with the Ypresian (early Eocene) hyperthermal event J, also known as C24n.2rH1. High-resolution sedimentological, geochemical (stable isotopes, major and trace elements) and mineralogical (bulk and clay mineralogy) data show that multivariate statistical analysis helps to manage large-sized quantitative datasets objectively, avoiding arbitrary choice of representative elements and identifying environmental factors (virtual variables) that may not be evident otherwise. Variations in major and minor elements from hemipelagic carbonates across the Solondota carbon isotope excursion suggest a temporarily more humid continental climate, which caused increased terrigenous material input into the marine environment. The finer grained fraction boosted hemipelagic carbonate dilution, whereas the coarser grained sediment was transported by temporarily more frequent and voluminous turbidity currents. Thus, the results from the Solondota carbon isotope excursion revealed similarities with deep marine records of other early Eocene minor hyperthermal events. This demonstrates the validity of deep-marine turbiditic successions for providing reliable sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical records of global palaeoclimatic significance, complementing the information obtained from other sedimentary environments. Furthermore, the generally expanded nature of turbiditic successions can potentially provide palaeoclimatic information at very high resolution, enriching, and perhaps improving, the commonly condensed and sometimes discontinuous record of hemipelagic- only successions.

The two systems operationally produce analyses and 10-days forecasts of the main physical parameters (Temperature, Salinity, Sea Level, Currents, Mixed Layer Depth) with a resolution of about 4.5km in the horizontal over 141 vertical levels in the Mediterranean Sea, and about 3km in the horizontal over 31 vertical levels in the Black Sea. The hydrodynamic numerical solutions are based on the NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) model coupled to a 3D variational data assimilation method (3DVAR) able to assimilate in-situ temperature and salinity profiles, satellite along-track sea level anomaly and sea surface temperature (in the Mediterranean Sea a nudging to satellite SST-L4 dataset is provided). The Mediterranean system is also 2-way online coupled with the WW3 (WaveWatch3) wave model to better represent the surface drag coefficient. The two systems are forced by 1/8o degree ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts) atmospheric fields. The systems are validated in near real time and the quality of the products is monitored through regional websites (http://medfs.cmcc.it/ and http://bsfs.cmcc.it/) showing the analysis and forecast field maps at different depths (in case of 3D variables) as well as a weekly validation of model analysis compared with available observations. The focus of this work is to present the latest modelling system upgrades and the related improvements achieved by showing the model skill assessment including comparison with in-situ and satellite observational datasets.

    Description: The largest earthquake in the Zagros Mountains struck the city of Azgeleh on the Iran–Iraq border on 12 November 2017. This Mw 7.3 earthquake was followed by an intense seismic sequence. Implementing the double-difference earthquake location technique, we relocate 1069 events recorded by our local seismic network, deployed after the mainshock. The spatial distribution of the epicenters indicates linear alignments of the events nucleated along at least four notable clusters. The clusters are characterized by at least one significant earthquake, such as the Tazehabad earthquake of 25 August 2018 (Mw 5.9) along a dense, east–west trending cluster and the Sarpol-e Zahab earthquake of 25 November 2018 (Mw 6.3) along the cluster with a northeast–southwest trend. We use two-pass differential SAR interferometry (DInSAR) and Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) methods to study the coseismic permanent displacements of the Azgeleh, Tazehabad and Sarpol-e Zahab events as well as the one-year postseismic deformation field of the 2017–2018 seismic sequence, respectively. We use non-linear and linear optimization algorithms to derive the source geometry and the slip distribution along the fault planes. The inversion is conducted by introducing also seismological constraints, leading to the definition of a listric geometry for the Azgeleh mainshock rupture that accommodates the slip area at depth of 10–16 km along a sub-horizontal plane (dipping ~3°) and a low-angle (~16°) ramp. The thrust and dextral movements along this NNW-striking (~345°) fault have triggered a tear fault responsible for the Tazehabad event ruptured an east–west trending (~267°), north-dipping (~78°) sinistral shear fault. We present the dextral slip distribution of the Sarpol-e Zahab event along a NE-striking (~34°) fault, as a synthetic Riedel structure for the southern segment of the Khanaqin fault, dipping 63° to the southeast. We find the postseismic deformation field associated with the seismic sequence is not confined only to the mainshock source (the Azgeleh fault), but also develops along the Tazehabad and Sarpol-e Zahab faults. We additionally propose afterslip along a duplex, flat-ramp-flat structure down-dip and up-dip of the Azgeleh coseismic slip area. The up-dip afterslip develops onto the shallow detachment (~3°) at depth of ~8 km and the down-dip afterslip propagate onto the mid-crustal décollement level within the Pan-African basement. The Azgeleh, Tazehabad, Sarpol-e Zahab and Khanaqin faults mark the Lurestan Arc–Kirkuk Embayment sharp margin in the Northwest Zagros and play a key role in the lateral escape of the Lurestan Salient and vertical strain partitioning in the Zagros front.

    Description: Reducing the impact of volcanic eruptions on society is a major challenge of volcanology. Although science is one basic component of risk reduction, the achievement of this goal requires competencies that go beyond natural sciences. Nowadays, the importance of non-scientific factors in reducing volcanic risks is often and dangerously overlooked, possibly leading to decision making that cannot be rationally justified. In this paper we explore the basic components of an ideal decision-making process, identifying the roles and responsibilities of the different partners/tasks that are involved. In particular, we advocate the use of the hazard/risk separation principle, which can help discern unambiguously the role of volcanology (and more in general of science) in the whole risk-reduction process. Although this distinction may be of low relevance in some real cases—for example, when the costs of mitigation actions are low and the likelihood of eruption is high—it becomes of paramount importance when dealing with high uncertainty on the eruption onset or size and expensive mitigation actions, such as the evacuation of a large city. Volcanologists can play different roles in the decision-making process, but they have to be aware that this demands competencies that go beyond being a good volcano scientist. The final intent of this paper is to encourage constructive cooperation between volcanologists and public-policy makers keeping separated their own tasks as defined by their roles and their competences, with the intent of establishing fully transparent decision-making protocols well before volcanic crises. These protocols can be very helpful to audit the decision-making process at any time, and they may be an excellent communication tool for the interested stakeholders, including society.

    Description: The 24–27 December 2018 flank eruption at Mount Etna (Southern Italy) has been investigated through a multidisciplinary approach in which olivine chemical zoning and diffusion chronometry data were integrated with models inferred by GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) measurements. Inspection of the olivine chemical zoning from core to rim allowed the identification of some dominant ways of transfer and interaction between magmas pertaining to different magmatic environments. Most of crystal cores are representative of crystallization at pressure of 290–230 and 160–120 MPa. Olivine rims suggest re‐equilibration at shallow pressure (≤30 MPa). Geodetic‐based models indicate pressurization of near‐vertical prolate spheroidal sources centered at ∼7.2 km below sea level (bsl) between 9 June 2017 and 28 June 2018 and later at ∼5.1 km bsl between 28 June 2018 and the eruption onset. Geodetic data also highlight a change in the inflation rate since late June 2018 and later around November 2018, which has been here related to both replenishment phases and magma uprising across the plumbing system. Timescales of magma replenishment are in agreement with prolonged recharge from deep levels upward to shallow environments started about 6 months before the eruption, with further replenishment involving the upper magmatic environments just 3–16 days before the eruption. At present, the eruptive activity at the volcano is primarily controlled by pressure imbalances affecting extensive sections of the plumbing system, with possibility to develop persistent eruptive activity at the summit versus flank eruptions depending on fortuitous interruptions of the steady magma recharge/discharge rate at shallow levels.

    Description: La Palma is one of the youngest of the Canary Islands, and historically the most active. The recent activity and unrest in the archipelago, the moderate seismicity observed in 2017 and 2018 and the possibility of catastrophic landslides related to the Cumbre Vieja volcano have made it strongly advisable to ensure a realistic knowledge of the background surface deformation on the island. This will then allow any anomalous deformation related to potential volcanic unrest on the island to be detected by monitoring the surface deformation. We describe here the observation results obtained during the 2006–2010 period using geodetic techniques such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Advanced Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (A-DInSAR) and microgravimetry. These results show that, although there are no significant associated variations in gravity, there is a clear surface deformation that is spatially and temporally variable. Our results are discussed from the point of view of the unrest and its implications for the definition of an operational geodetic monitoring system for the island

    Description: Excessive numerical diffusion is one of the major limitations in the representation of long-range transport by chemistry transport models. In the present study, we focus on excessive diffusion in the vertical direction, which has been shown to be a major issue, and we explore three possible ways of addressing this problem: increasing the vertical resolution, using an advection scheme with anti-diffusive properties and more accurately representing the vertical wind. This study was carried out using the CHIMERE chemistry transport model for the 18 March 2012 eruption of Mount Etna, which released about 3 kt of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere in a plume that was observed by satellite instruments (the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer instrument, IASI, and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument, OMI) for several days. The change from the classical Van Leer (1977) scheme to the Després and Lagoutière (1999) anti-diffusive scheme in the vertical direction was shown to provide the largest improvement to model outputs in terms of preserving the thin plume emitted by the volcano. To a lesser extent, the improved representation of the vertical wind field was also shown to reduce plume dispersion. Both of these changes helped to reduce vertical diffusion in the model as much as a brute-force approach (increasing vertical resolution).

    Description: Geological gas seepage in petroleum-bearing sedimentary basins is an important natural source of atmospheric methane. In methane budget models geological emissions are generally considered constant over time, not affecting decadal atmospheric methane changes. Here, we report the case of a considerable sub-decadal variation of methane seepage from one of the largest thermogenic gas seep sites in Europe, Katakolo Harbour (Western Peloponnese, Greece). Based on gas flux measurements by accumulation chamber performed in 2010 and 2018, methane emission from cracks and fissures throughout the asphalt and concrete pavement of the harbour increased about four times (from 57 to 225 kg d􀀀 1) with emission factor changing from ~4,000 to 15,000 t km􀀀 2 y􀀀 1. Multiple lines of evidence, including mechanical deformation and fissuring of concrete and asphalt pavement, increased exhalation with constant fissure conditions, and no significant cracking with operating corrosion from 2004 to 2010, suggest that the methane emission increase is mainly due to intensification of subsurface gas flow (seepage) after 2010. Deep gas pressure and fault permeability variations, likely induced by the numerous earthquakes of the region, might have played a role. We estimate that if similar short-term variations of emission factor occur in large seepage areas worldwide, the global geological methane emission can significantly change, contributing to decadal changes of atmospheric methane budget.

    Description: To unravel how and where coseismic and interseismic deformation impacts the spatial and temporal patterns of rock uplift of the Lurestan sector of the Zagros Mountains, we performed an investigation of the large‐scale features of topography and river network coupled with 2‐D finite element modeling. Geomorphological analysis and constraints from parameters such as elevation, local relief, normalized channel steepness index (ksn), river longitudinal profiles, and transformed river profiles (chi plots) were used to unravel the time‐space distribution of vertical motions. Whereas the much longer timescale over which topography grows and/or rivers respond to tectonic or climatic perturbations with respect to even multiple seismic cycles, the outputs of the finite element model yield fundamental information on the source of the late part of the spatiotemporal evolution of surface uplift recorded by the geomorphology. Model outputs shed new light into the processes controlling relief evolution in an actively growing mountain belt underlain by a major blind thrust. The outputs illustrate how coseismic slip controls localized uplift of a prominent topographic feature—the Mountain Front Flexure—located above the main upper crustal ramp of the principal basement thrust fault of the region, while continuous displacement along the deeper, aseismic portion of the same basement fault controls generalized uplift of the whole crustal block located farther to the NE, in the interior of the orogen.

    Description: One of the primary activities of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology; INGV) is the production of resources concerning educational and outreach projects in geophysics and natural hazard topics. This activity is aimed at transferring, periodically, results at the forefront of ongoing research to the public through an intense and comprehensive plan for scientific dissemination. Over the past 15 years, graphic and visual communication have become essential tools for supporting institutional and research activities. In this paper, we describe successful INGV team experiences resulting from a close relationship and collaborative work between graphic designers and research scientists. The main goal of the projects devoted to the general public, through the creation of a museum exhibition or the production of descriptive brochures, is to support scientists in conveying their message and making concepts fruitful, easier to understand but also fully enjoyable thanks to the emotional involvement that images may generate. Through a careful composition of signs and images, and through the use of different visual tools (colours, form and lettering) on different media (print, video and web), the graphics and editorial products together create a strong INGV-style identity, making it easily recognizable in any educational and outreach project. A full project product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and colours, which serve the purpose of unifying the whole set. Colour is used not only to help the project logo to stand out from the international overview but, in our case, also to generate a unifying return across all INGV sections. A recent and highly stimulating experience concerned the creation of edu-games, specifically designed for scientific dissemination, through a close collaboration between INGV graphic designers and their reference scientific community. The edu-games were designed as an effective combination of educational content and playful communicative aspects, leading the young players to learn while having fun.

    Description: This manual has the objective to provide the shift workers of the Osservatorio Vesuviano Monitoring Room with an useful support to carry out their activities. Specifically, it focuses on the guidelines for the use of information systems related to the analysis and management of seismic events. Shift workers, among their duties, have the task to perform the preliminary location of the occuring seismic events that has to be done by means of two specific systems: WinPick and WESSEL. The first program (WinPick), developed by Flora Giudicepietro [Open File Report n.6, Osservatorio Vesuviano, December 2000] provides the functionalities to analyze in detail the traces of an event in order to perform its location that has later to be saved on two files: one with arrival times and one with location data. The second system (WESSEL), developed by Rosario Peluso in the framework of the FISR SOIR “Sale Operative Integrate e Reti di monitoraggio del futuro” project, provides the features to automatically acquire the files generated by WinPick, therefore all the event data, and to insert them in the SERENADE database and in Sismolab. This is the database developed as part of the Speed project (Scenari di Pericolosità e Danno dei vulcani della Campania) to allow real­time sharing of the monitoring data of the OV with the DPC, later the Speed/Sismolab system it was extended to allow access to data also to the public. It is used to simultaneously show the definitive, revised and automatic locations of a seismic event (obviously on the basis of those available). The shift worker in the monitoring room has the task of populating the database with the localized events: this operation, previously carried out through the system interface, is now carried out directly via WESSEL. In addition, WESSEL also sends automatic e manual localization of events, to the unified seismological database developed by the ONT as part of the FISR SOIR project (Integrated Operating Rooms and Future Monitoring Networks), to create a unified database for the seismic locations of the three INGV monitoring rooms.

    Description: Geochemical and geophysical prospecting methods (including measurements of soil heat flux and soil CO2 flux, gravimetry, self-potential and geomagnetism) are used to produce an integrated data set aimed at imaging the migration of fluids in the sub-surface at the Salinelle mud volcanoes, located on the lower southwestern flank of Mt Etna (Sicily, Italy). This area was affected by magmatic eruptions from local volcanic centers between about 48 and 27 ka. Today, only pseudo-volcanic phenomena due to over-pressured multiphase pore fluids there occur. Carbon dioxide of magmatic origin, mixed with biogenic hydrocarbons, warm hypersaline waters and mud, are constantly released at the surface through the main conduits of mud volcanoes, whose activity is characterized by alternation of mild gas bubbling periods and strong paroxysmal phases. The latter produce violent gas eruptions that eject warm water (T ≈ 50° C) to a height up to about 1 m. Surface distribution of the geophysical and geochemical parameters have been investigated to detect the main pathways through which fluids move toward the shallow crust. Integration of geochemical, geophysical and geological maps allowed for the tracing of the fluid flow in the shallowest (a few tens of meters below the surface) part of the local hydrothermal system. Our results showed that the rising of fluids from a deep reservoir is controlled by the main structural and geological features of the area and their temporal and spatial evolution depends on pressure conditions inside the hydrothermal system.

    Description: Cultural heritage represents our legacy with the past and our identity. However, to assure heritage can be passed on to future generations, it is required to put into the field knowledge as well as preventive and safeguard actions, especially for heritage located in seismic hazard-prone areas. With this in mind, the article deals with the analysis of ground response in the Avellino town (Campania, Southern Italy) and its correlation with the effects caused by the 23rd November 1980 Irpinia earthquake on the historical buildings. The aim is to get some clues about the earthquake damage cause-effect relationship. To estimate the ground motion response for Avellino, where strong-motion recordings are not available, we made use of the seismic hazard disaggregation. Then, we made extensive use of borehole data to build the lithological model so being able to assess the seismic ground response. Overall, results indicate that the complex subsoil layers influence the ground motion, particularly in the lowest period (0.1–0.5 s). The comparison with the observed damage of the selected historical buildings and the maximum acceleration expected indicates that the damage distribution cannot be explained by the surface geology effects alone.

    Description: We report a study of magnetization reversals and skyrmion configurations in two systems, Pt/Co/MgO and Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayers, where magnetic skyrmions are stabilized by a combination of dipolar and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions (DMIs). The First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) diagrams of low-DMI Pt/Co/MgO and high-DMI Ir/Fe/Co/Pt exhibit stark differences, which are identified by micromagnetic simulations to be indicative of hybrid and pure Néel skyrmions, respectively. Tracking the evolution of FORC features in multilayers with dipolar interactions and DMI, we find that the negative FORC valley, typically accompanying the positive FORC peak near saturation, disappears under both reduced dipolar interactions and enhanced DMI. As these conditions favor the formation of pure Néel skyrmions, we propose that the resultant FORC feature—a single positive FORC peak near saturation—can act as a fingerprint for pure Néel skyrmions in multilayers. Our study thus expands on the utility of FORC analysis as a tool for characterizing spin topology in multilayer thin films.

    Description: Worldwide, contaminated water sources constitute the main risk factor for several diseases and represent 2.2% of global deaths. El Salvador is a country with lower water availability per habitant and with more degraded environmental conditions compared with the other countries in Central America. The aim of this study is to identify the association between safe water availability and the self-perceived health status, considering the sense of community as a possible protective factor of this relationship in rural areas of El Salvador. This study has been carried out as part of the international cooperation project “Agua Futura.” A total of 159 inhabitants of rural El Salvador areas were face-to-face interviewed about the acquisition, use, and storage of water, and the Household Water InSecurity Experiences Scale, the Short Form-12, and the Sense of Community Index-2 were administrated. Results showed negative associations between the water insecurity and the health-related quality of life, mainly mental health. Moreover, the interaction between the sense of community and water insecurity was a significant predictor in the majority of the mental health outcomes, highlighting that the sense of community could have a main role of mediator in the association between the scarcity of water and the mental health outcomes. This study suggests that the water scarcity may lead to poor mental health, and that a stronger sense of community could be a protective factor of the quality of life in people who are experiencing scarce water availability.

    Description: The turbulent thermal convection on the Sun is an example of an irreversible non-equilibrium phenomenon in a quasi-steady state characterized by a continuous entropy production rate. Here, the statistical features of a proxy of the local entropy production rate, in solar quiet regions at different timescales, are investigated and compared with the symmetry conjecture of the steady-state fluctuation theorem by Gallavotti and Cohen. Our results show that solar turbulent convection satisfies the symmetries predicted by the fluctuation relation of the Gallavotti and Cohen theorem at a local level.

    Description: Spectral analysis has been applied to almost thou-sand seismic events recorded at Vesuvius volcano (Naples,southern Italy) in 2018 with the aim to test a new tool fora fast event classification. We computed two spectral pa-rameters, central frequency and shape factor, from the spec-tral moments of order 0, 1, and 2, for each event at sevenseismic stations taking the mean among the three compo-nents of ground motion. The analyzed events consist ofvolcano-tectonic earthquakes, low frequency events and un-classified events (landslides, rockfall, thunders, quarry blasts,etc.). Most of them are of low magnitude, and/or low maxi-mum signal amplitude, therefore the signal to noise ratio isvery different between the low noise summit stations andthe higher noise stations installed at low elevation aroundthe volcano. The results of our analysis show that volcano-tectonic earthquakes and low frequency events are easily dis-tinguishable through the spectral moments values, particu-larly at seismic stations closer to the epicenter. On the con-trary, unclassified events show the spectral parameters valuesdistributed in a broad range which overlap both the volcano-tectonic earthquakes and the low frequency events. Since thecomputation of spectral parameters is extremely easy and fastfor a detected event, it may become an effective tool for eventclassification in observatory practice.

    Description: Peralkaline rhyolites, associated with extensional tectonic settings, are medium to low viscosity magmas that often produce eruptive styles ranging from effusive to highly explosive eruptions. The role of pre-eruptive conditions and crystallization kinetics in influencing the eruptive style of peralkaline rhyolitic magmas has been investigated and debated considering equilibrium conditions. However, experimental constraints on the effect of disequilibrium in crystallization in such magmas are currently lacking in the literature. Therefore, we performed isobaric cooling experiments to investigate alkali feldspar crystallization kinetics in peralkaline rhyolitic melts. Experiments were performed under water-saturated, water-undersaturated, and anhydrous conditions between 25 and 100 MPa, at 670–790◦C and with experimental durations ranging from 0.5 to 420 h. Here we present the first data on crystallization kinetics of alkali feldspar, which is the main crystal phase in peralkaline rhyolitic melts, in order to improve our understanding of the evolutionary timescales of these melts and their ability to shift between effusive and explosive activity. Our experimental results indicate that the alkali feldspar nucleation delay can range from hours to several days as a function of undercooling and H2O content in the melt. Thus, a peralkaline rhyolitic magma can be stored at the pre-eruptive conditions for days without important variations of its crystal fraction. This suggests that crystallization may not necessarily play the main role in triggering fragmentation during explosive eruptions of peralkaline rhyolitic magmas.

    Description: At Ustica island (Palermo, Italy), in the area of Casa dei Francesi, 119 fragments of obsidian artifacts were collected on the surface of an agricultural field at an altitude of 50 m asl. In the same area, until now, scientific literature reports only the presence of late Roman pottery (4th–6th centuries AD), and no evidence has appeared that it could be the site of a prehistoric settlement. The most important prehistoric settlement, the Faraglioni Village (Middle Bronze Age) is located 700 m further north, overlooking the sea. Obsidian provenance analyses, performed on the 119 samples with absolutely non-destructive techniques WD-XRF and SEM-EDS, indicate two sources areas: Lipari (93 samples, 78%) and Pantelleria (26 samples, 22%). Concerning the obsidians from the island of Pantelleria, it was possible to also establish the sub-source of Salto la Vecchia. The typological and functional analyses of the 119 obsidian fragments point out that 115 are debitages, some of which show evidence of percussion bulbs, and only 4 are tools with micro-retouching. This work focuses on the geochemical and typological characterization of the obsidian assemblage collected, the characteristics of which suggest the existence of a prehistoric settlement in the area of the Casa dei Francesi or nearby

    Description: The Mw 6.5 Norcia earthquake occurred on 30 October 2016, along the Mt Vettore fault (Central Apennines, Italy), it was the largest earthquake of the 2016–2017 seismic sequence that started 2 months earlier with the Mw 6.0 Amatrice earthquake (24 August). To detect potential slow slip during the sequence, we produced Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time series using 12‐ to 6‐day repeat cycles of Sentinel‐1A/1B images. Time series indicates that centimeter‐scale surface displacements took place during the 10 weeks following the Norcia earthquake. Two areas of subsidence are detected: one in the Castelluccio basin (hanging wall of the Mt Vettore fault) and one in the southern extent of the Norcia earthquake surface rupture, near an inherited thrust. Poroelastic and viscoelastic models are unable to explain these displacements. In the Castelluccio basin, the displacement reaches 13.2 ± 1.4 mm in the ascending line of sight on 6 January 2017. South of the Norcia earthquake surface rupture (a zone between the Norcia and Amatrice earthquakes), the postseismic surface displacements affect a smaller area but reach 35.5 ± 1.7 mm in ascending line of sight by January 2017 and follow a logarithmic temporal decay consistent with postseismic afterslip. Our analysis suggests that the structurally complex area located south of the Norcia rupture (30 October) is characterized by a conditionally stable frictional regime. This geometrical and frictional barrier likely halted rupture propagation during the Amatrice (24 August) and Norcia (30 October) earthquakes at shallow depth (〈3–4 km).

    Description: The aim of this paper is to identify the ground motion models (GMMs), applicable in active shallow crustal regions (ASCRs) and subduction zones (SZs), to be used for the new release of the seismic hazard model of Italy (MPS19) for peak ground acceleration and 12 ordinates of the acceleration response spectra (5% damping) in the period range 0.05–4 s. The steps to achieve such goal are: (1) a pre-selection of the GMMs that takes into account the suitability for the application to the Italian territory and the fulfillment of the new hazard model requirements; (2) the assessment of a proper scoring of the pre-selected GMMs using strong-motion data recorded in Italy; (3) the selection of the GMMs to be used in the hazard calculation. The final set of GMMs describes satisfactorily the epistemic uncertainty of the ground shaking process, privileging the simplicity and flexibility of the functional form. Finally, the weights of the selected GMMs are assigned combining the results of the scoring and the weights obtained through an experts’ elicitation.

    Description: The subject of this study consists of 17 ancient glass fragments from the island of Ustica (Palermo, Italy) obtained from local museums. All the 17 glass fragments are stratigraphically decontextualized, as they were collected by archaeological surface surveys. Each fragment was analyzed by Electron Micro Probe Analyzer coupled with an Energy Dispersive X-Ray System (EMPA-EDS) and by Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to obtain the composition of major, minor and trace elements. Surface analyses revealed the presence of corrosion layers in most of the glass fragments which was evident also in the chemical data. Nevertheless, reconstruction of the glassmaking processes and the approximate period of production was possible for almost all the glass fragments. Less than half of the examined fragments are attributable to recognizable typologies as unguentaria, beakers, bottles, and vases; all the other small fragments are typologically undetermined. Out of 17 fragments only one fragment is of HLLA composition possibly being produced in 17th–18th century AD, while all the others can be attributed to soda glass with different periods of production: natron glass from Roman and Early Medieval period, plantash glass from High or Late Medieval period with the exception of possible Byzantine glass from 6th century AD, and synthetic soda glasses typical of modern era. These data confirm the discontinuous habitation of the island from the Roman period as well as the import of glass objects to the island.

    Description: Fumarolic fields, especially those with nearsurface soil temperature 〈 100 C, are very common features of active or quiescent volcanoes, with both open or closed conduits. Their spatial extent, as well as the time variability of their temperature, are conditioned by three main factors: (1) Local hydro-meteorological conditions; (2) Vapor flow from the underlying volcanic-hydrothermal system; (3) Permeability variation induced by stress field changes and/or deposition dissolution cycles of hydrothermal alteration minerals. Once depurated from the exogenous noise, time variations of the thermal signal, in term of both short-lasting transients and medium/long term trends, reflect changes in the activity state of the related volcanic system, and/or of seismic activity, also of tectonic origin, affecting volcanoes. Theoretical models of heat transfer processes are discussed, highlighting how it is very difficult distinguish between conductive and convective mechanisms or calculating heat fluxes: as a consequence, thermal data from low temperature fumaroles should be used as qualitative proxies of volcano-tectonic phenomena acting on the monitored volcanoes. Following the description of the measuring systems and of the criteria for designing a performing network for thermal monitoring of fumaroles, some case histories from Italian volcanoes (Vulcano, Stromboli, Mt. Etna, Mt. Vesuvius) are presented, illustrating how in the last years the monitoring of low temperature fumaroles have given useful insights on the evolution of the activity state of these volcanoes.

    Description: Integration of archaeoseismic observations, geological and geophysical surveys and a critical review of historical written sources contributed to shed light on the effects of the 847 earthquake AD that struck a large area of Southern-Central Italy. New archaeoseismic evidence of a strong earthquake comes from two Medieval archaeological sites along the Volturno Valley, between Campania and Molise regions, which occurred around the middle of the ninth century AD. Evidence includes the tilting of pillars in the Basilica of Santa Maria near Alvignano (northern Campania) and a collapsed masonry wall in the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno near Isernia (northern Molise). At Alvignano, a site so far unrecorded in seismic catalogues for the 847 earthquake, geoelectrical and georadar investigations were used to explore the subsoil and study local site conditions, which could have influenced coseismic ground motion. Integrated interpretation of geophysical surveys and borehole logs document the presence of altered pyroclastic deposits, which certainly enhanced site effects at Alvignano. Analysis of damage descriptions and of archaeological reports indicate that the 847 seismic event documented by historical sources damaged a wide area between Latium, Campania and Molise, with destruction of the town of Isernia. Although historical sources did not explicitly mention damage in Rome, seismic effects attributed to the 847 event are recorded in the archaeological and seismological literature. Because the damaged area for this medieval earthquake is loosely defined due to the scanty documentation, the present study represents an important contribution to better define the shaking area and provide new hints on the extent and location of the possible seismogenic source.

    Description: The study of the kinematics and stress field related to seismicity makes an important contribution to the understanding of tectonic processes. In this kind of analysis, a crucial issue is identifying seismically homogeneous areas, which implies data classification and cluster creation. We present an approach that combines unsupervised learning techniques in order to reveal patterns in the focal mechanisms data set. In particular, a combination of two popular clustering algorithms, that is, self-organizing maps and Fuzzy C-means, was applied to focal mechanisms of events located in the Central Mediterranean region, characterized by a complex geodynamic framework. The analysis allowed identifying eight groups of focal mechanisms and their spatial distribution in the crust, and revealing the tectonic style of key sectors of southern Italy and of the neighboring offshore areas. A compressive regime was found between the lower Tyrrhenian Sea and southeastern Sicily, whereas extension prevails along the Calabrian Arc and the southern Apennines. A NW-SE transcurrent faulting between the Aeolian Islands and the Ionian Sea forms a transfer zone between these two domains.

    Description: In the seismic domain, collecting seismic signal and alerting movements of earth crust is crucial for monitoring and forecasting seismic activities. At the same time, with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, the device interoperability is the minimum requirement for communication among any available sensing device. Semantic web technologies promote this interoperability, by enhancing the quality of data that become ontology-annotated. The paper introduces an ontology model for describing the seismic domain, through the data collection from sensors, to gather seismic signals aimed at the seismic event recognition. The ontology has been built on the well-known SOSA and SSN ontologies, modeled to describe systems of sensors, actuators, and observations. The ontology, namely VEO (Volcano Event Ontology), has been modeled on actual data sensors, collected by a monitoring network at Mt. Vesuvius (Naples, Italy). Along with the ontology model of the seismic domain, a machine learning-based classification has been accomplished to identify seismic events (underwater explosions, quarry blasts, and thunders). A VEO-driven knowledge-base collects raw seismic data and detects events, accessible by SPARQL queries.

    Description: Seismic refraction, multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and ambient noise array measurements using the wireless array analysis (WARAN) system were applied to acquire near-surface profiles of seismic velocities in the Selinunte Archaeological Park. This ancient city is famous for numerous temples, which according to the literature, were destroyed by at least two earthquakes in antiquity. The morphology of the archeological park is affected by two rivers which in combination with the temple remains suggests three study sites. We determined the subsurface velocity at these three locations as essential information for further studies of the response of the temple structures to earthquake ground motions. The stratigraphy of the site indicates that low-velocity layers might exist. Seismic refraction profiles with 69 m spread and 24 geophones were employed during the active seismic experiments. The measured P-wave velocities of the top two layers were used as a constraint during the inversion of dispersion relations from the MASW and WARAN data. The reliability of the velocity profiles was tested by forward calculation of synthetic seismograms. P-wave velocities which were not well constraint throughout the dispersion curve inversions were adjusted through suitable Poisson’s ratios based on the well constraint S-velocities. The combined use of the three different kinds of measurements and multi-mode interpretation of the dispersion curves revealed velocity profiles including lowvelocity layers which are supported by de-amplification observed in ratios of horizontal and vertical components of noise spectra.

    Description: Near-source effects can amplify seismic ground motion, causing large demand to structures and thus their identification and characterization is fundamental for engineering applications. Among the most relevant features, forward-directivity effects may generate near-fault records characterized by a large velocity pulse and unusual response spectral shape amplified in a narrow frequency-band. In this paper, we explore the main statistical features of acceleration and displacement response spectra of a suite of 230 pulse-like signals (impulsive waveforms) contained in the NESS1 (NEar Source Strong-motion) flat-file. These collected pulse-like signals are analyzed in terms of pulse period and pulse azimuthal orientation. We highlight the most relevant differences of the pulse-like spectra compared to the ordinary (i.e., no-pulse) ones, and quantify the contribution of the pulse through a corrective factor of the spectral ordinates. Results show that the proposed empirical factors are able to capture the amplification effect induced by near-fault directivity, and thus they could be usefully included in the framework of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis to adjust ground-motion model (GMM) predictions.

    Description: A volcanological map of the active Somma-Vesuvius volcano is presented at the 1:20,000 scale. The map is based on 1:5000 field mapping carried out during the Italian CARG project. Geological data are represented on a digital terrain model of the volcano. This allows a better visualisation of the main morphological, volcanic, and geological features. The legend is organised in four different panels, which depict the activity of the volcano and caldera development. The geological survey is based on recognition and description of lithostratigraphic units. The geological map highlights the volcanic evolution of the Somma- Vesuvius volcano, and it is propaedeutic for further studies aimed at improving the scientific knowledge and the volcanic hazard assessment of this world-famous volcano.

    Description: Particle systems, commonly associated with computer graphics, animation, and video games, are an essential component in the implementation of numerical methods ranging from the meshfree methods for computational fluid dynamics and related applications (e.g., smoothed particle hydrodynamics, SPH) to minimization methods for arbitrary problems (e.g., particle swarm optimization, PSO). These methods are frequently embarrassingly parallel in nature, making them a natural fit for implementation on massively parallel computational hardware such as modern graphics processing units (GPUs). However, naive implementations fail to fully exploit the capabilities of this hardware. We present practical solutions to the challenges faced in the efficient parallel implementation of these particle systems, with a focus on performance, robustness, and flexibility. The techniques are illustrated through GPUSPH, the first implementation of SPH to run completely on GPU, and currently supporting multi-GPU clusters, uniform precision independent of domain size, and multiple SPH formulations.

    Description: “10 years with planet Earth” is the title of the calendar created for primary schools, realized in 2016 by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), the Italian Institute of Geophysical Research. The calendar is the outcome of a project created to support and complement 15 years of dissemination activities with schools. Each year for 10 years, we have printed calendars that represented different subjects related to a world in constant evolution. Each year we have launched a calendar competition among schools, asking children to send in drawings related to the chosen theme. The aim was to stimulate interest in learning about Earth sciences and the dynamics of planet Earth, as well as to raise awareness of water resources availability, the prevention of natural disasters and planet sustainability. We have received about 10 000 drawings from students of more than 400 schools. For each yearly competition, we have chosen the most significant drawings and we have included them in the calendar. The creators of the drawings were awarded by scientists, journalists, artists, science communicators and even by a government minister. In addition to the competition, the drawings reflect impressions and thoughts and illustrate the children's point of view. From the images, one can feel great sensitivity, consideration, responsiveness and respect for the planet as well as positive feelings towards science.

    Description: The South Sandwich Volcanic Arc is one of the most remote and enigmatic arcs on Earth. Sporadic observations from rare cloudfree satellite images—and even rarer in situ reports—provide glimpses into a dynamic arc system characterised by persistent gas emissions and frequent eruptive activity. Our understanding of the state of volcanic activity along this arc is incomplete compared to arcs globally. To fill this gap, we present here detailed geological and volcanological observations made during an expedition to the South Sandwich Islands in January 2020.We report the first in situ measurements of gas chemistry, emission rate and carbon isotope composition from along the arc. We show that Mt. Michael on Saunders Island is a persistent source of gas emissions, releasing 145±59 t day−1 SO2 in a plume characterised by a CO2/SO2 molar ratio of 1.8 ± 0.2. Combining this CO2/SO2 ratio with our independent SO2 emission rate measured near simultaneously, we derive a CO2 flux of 179 ± 76 t day−1. Outgassing from low temperature (90–100 °C) fumaroles is pervasive at the active centres of Candlemas and Bellingshausen, with measured gas compositions indicative of interaction between magmatic fluids and hydrothermal systems. Carbon isotope measurements of dilute plume and fumarole gases from along the arc indicate a magmatic δ13C of − 4.5 ± 2.0‰. Interpreted most simply, this result suggests a carbon source dominated by mantle-derived carbon. However, based on a carbon mass balance from sediment core ODP 701, we show that mixing between depleted upper mantle and a subduction component composed of sediment and altered crust is also permissible.We conclude that, although remote, the South Sandwich Volcanic Arc is an ideal tectonic setting in which to explore geochemical processes in a young, developing arc.

    Description: The DARE e-science platform (http://project-dare.eu) offers innovative tools to ease scientific workflow development and execution exploiting efficient Cloud resources. It aims to enable on-demand numerical computations and analyses, fast large dataset handling, flexible and customisable workflow pipelines and complete provenance tracking. It also integrates available e-infrastructure services (e.g. EUDAT, EIDA) and can be linked to user developed interfaces. DARE is validated via two domain-specific pilots, one from the climate modelling community and one from the seismological research field. Focusing on the latter, the EPOS Use Case is driven by urgent issues and general user needs of solid Earth Science community, following developments and application standards in the computational seismology research society. This Use Case also benefits from the pioneering experience of previous European projects (e.g. VERCE, EPOS-IP) in this framework. We present here the development of a scientific workflow to perform a quick calculation of seismic source parameters after an earthquake. The workflow requirements include HPC calculations (on local-institutional or Cloud resources), fast data-intensive processing, provenance exploitation and seismic source inverse modelling tools. The DARE platform automatically conducts the required actions optimally mapped to computational resources, linking them together by managing intermediate data. It automatically deploys the necessary environment to perform on-demand transparent computations executing a dockerised version of the numerical simulation code on a Kubernetes cluster via a web API. Other API calls allow for remote, distributed execution of dispel4py workflows, used to describe the steps for data analysis and download of seismic recorded data via EIDA Research Infrastructure services. Well established scientific python codes, such as those for waveform misfit calculation and source inversion, are thus easily implemented in this flexible and modular structure, and executed at scale. Moreover, the pilot requirement of searching and reusing multiple simulations for the same earthquake strongly benefits from customisable management of metadata and lineage through the DARE platform exploiting the integration of S-ProvFlow with dispel4py.

    Description: Studies of risk perception examine the judgments that people make when they are asked to characterize and evaluate hazardous activities and technologies (Slovic, 1987). Risk perception is a cognitive process involved in several daily activities that orients people’s behaviors on the impact of uncertain events. This process is both individual and collective; it selects and interprets signals related to direct observations or information received from others. Some researches highlighted that in many cases there is a difference between subjective risk perception and objective evaluation (Slovic, 1992, 2000). To understand risk perception it is necessary to consider a number of social, psychological and cultural ambits, as well as interaction among them (Wachinger & Renn, 2010). In our opinion, in agreement with the constructivist approach, seismic risk perception does not depend on the actual value of the seismic risk but there are others factors influencing it. In the specific case of seismic risk, the role of people perception is very important, especially in the absence of clear communication strategies. The clarity of the language used by mass media, scientists and decision-makers in communicating seismic risk to people is essential for a proper knowledge and awareness. This paper presents the results of the research on seismic risk perception in Italy, started by INGV researchers on funding by the DPC 2012-2015. In 2013, we built a questionnaire to assess seismic risk perception, with a particular attention to compare hazard assessed by scientific data and methodology, then translated into a national law. The Seismic Risk Perception Questionnaire (SRPQ) is designed by semantic differential method, using opposite terms on a Likert scale to seven points. The questionnaire allows to obtain scores for five risk indicators: Hazard, Exposure, Vulnerability, People and Community, Earthquake Phenomenon. In 2015, a CATI survey was conducted on a statistical sample of the Italian population (N=4,012), its results represent a benchmark for the seismic risk perception in Italy. At the same time, from 2013 to today, we have gathered on the web more than 9,800 responses to the SRP-Q (www.terremototest.it) and these data allow us to make comparisons for year and for different reference periods, also on the basis of the seismic phenomena that have occurred. The questionnaire is given by web on a random sample since 2013, January 21th, to April 2018, collecting over 9,800 answers. In this contribution we compare and discuss data collected during the last six years (2013-2018) trying to investigate if and how the occurrence of strong and damaging earthquakes (in particular those occurred in Central Italy in 2016) has changed the seismic risk perception in some regions of Italy. We hope that the analysis of risk perception data is able to produce useful indications to design seismic risk reduction activities and address risk communication strategies

    Description: The low temperature realm such as the geothermal systems, characterized by a large variety of near-Earth surface processes, has been the object of several isotopic studies, some of them including lithium isotopes. However, much work can still be done to systematically use lithium as tracer of geochemical processes in deep and shallow Earth reservoirs. A pilot study has been performed for the determination of lithium-isotope ratio by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), a technique poorly employed with respect to other methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, being more time consuming. Lithium has been extracted by chromatographic techniques on columns through an ion exchange process from both natural and reference samples. The isotope composition (6Li/7Li) expressed in terms of δ7Li has been determined in dynamic and static mode for comparative purposes, by using two different types of thermal ionization mass spectrometers. The results presented in this work agree with the data reported in the literature, opening a new perspective to future research on continental geothermal systems and groundwater domains, spread over the entire Italian peninsula. This research is based on the use of chemical and isotopic data, whereas it does not include lithium isotopes. These latter may provide a huge contribution in studying both volcanic products and fluids from active volcanic areas, including the superposed geothermal systems, and may represent a new tool for research and surveillance.

    Description: The circulation of groundwater is influenced by several factors, including permeability changes due to the dynamics of the stress field acting along tectonic discontinuities. Open faults can act as preferential pathways for the escape of crustal and subcrustal gases, such as CO2, towards the surface, allowing their chemical interaction with meteoric fluids. Here, we present the first map of dissolved CO2 partial pressure in the groundwater of Sicily, Italy. Based on the chemical analysis of 557 samples of groundwater, which were collected in wells and springs, we calculated the related CO2 partial pressure (PCO2) using PHREEQC software. The spatial distribution of the calculated PCO2 values highlights a general homogeneity at the regional scale, interrupted by positive anomalies linked to the main seismogenic or volcanic areas. Faults work as preferential escape pathways for deep CO2. The subsequent CO2–water–rock interaction determines the chemical composition of circulating water. As a consequence, groundwater composition can be successfully used to identify anomalous degassing areas.

    Description: This paper discusses some features of Early Warning Systems (EWSs), with a particular focus on those dealing with tsunamis. First, a description is presented of what the international organisations have suggested on the matter, starting from the Sendai Framework 2015-2030, in which several useful arguments are outlined. For tsunamis, a wide literature is available, thanks to the efforts of UNESCO-IOC (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission) and of many Tsunami Warning Systems (TWSs) operating worldwide since the half of 20th century. Then, some aspects of the recently established Tsunami Alert Centre (CAT) of INGV in Italy are described, focusing on the warning procedures and on the issue of the uncertainties in the real time estimates, which has been recently discussed within the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System in the north-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas (ICG/NEAMTWS). Finally, an analysis of the status of the NEAMTWS after almost 15 years of implementation is proposed, underlining the key achievements obtained in the upstream component (the technological part of monitoring and alerting), but also the strong limitations of the downstream part, that in many countries, including Italy, is still the weakest part of the alerting chain, as also seen in recent events affecting the Mediterranean.

    Description: The occurrence of a mainschok is always followed by aftershocks spatially distributed within the fault area. The aftershocks rate decay with time is described by the empirical Omori law which was inferred by catalogues analysis. The sequences discrimination within catalogues is not a straightforward operation, especially for low-magnitude mainshocks. Here, we describe the rate decay of the Omori law obtained using different sequence discrimination tools and we discover that, when the background seismicity is excluded, the sequences tend to last for the temporal extension of the catalogue.

    Description: The mechanics and seismogenic behavior of fault zones are strongly influenced by their internal structure. In this perspective, the internal structure of the extensional seismically active Vado di Corno Fault Zone (VCFZ, Central Apennines, Italy) was quantified by combining high-resolution structural mapping with 3-D fault network analysis over ∼2 km along fault strike. The fault zone was exhumed from ∼2 km depth in carbonate rocks, accommodated 1.5–2 km of extensional throw since Early Pleistocene, and cuts through the Pliocene Omo Morto Thrust Zone (OMTZ) with partial reactivation in extension. The exceptional exposure of the footwall block allowed us to reconstruct in detail the geometry of the OMTZ and quantify the spatial arrangement of master/subsidiary faults and fault zone rocks within the extensional VCFZ. The combination of the structural map and the 3-D fault network with kinematic and topological analyses pointed out the crucial role of the older thrust geometry (i.e., lateral ramps) in controlling the along-strike segmentation and slip distribution of the VCFZ. These observations were discussed in the framework of regional extension through a slip tendency analysis and a simplified mechanical model, which suggest the activation of oblique inherited structures during the lateral propagation of the VCFZ segments. The interaction of the VCFZ with the OMTZ generated along strike and possibly downdip mechanical asperities. Considering the exhumed VCFZ as an analog for the shallow structure of other seismic sources in the Central Apennines, similar settings could play first-order control on the spatio-temporal evolution and rupture heterogeneity of earthquakes in the region

    Description: The 2012 Emilia seismic sequence in central Italy represents an illustrative example of quasi-consecutive triggering with several mainshocks occurring within a few hours or a few days. The sequence was characterized by seven earthquakes of moment magnitude Mw 〉5, rupturing adjacent fault segments of the buried fold arc of the northern Apennines, for a total length of about 50 km (Scognamiglio et al., 2012; Fig. 1). The occurrence of so many large earthquakes, in such a short time window, suggests a possible interpretation in terms of mutual, static (Ganas et al., 2012), or dynamic (Convertito et al., 2013) triggering. In this article, we discuss the consequences of a consecutive succession of earthquakes, that is, a succession of close earthquakes that occur almost simultaneously. Multiple triggering—with variable time delays—has been observed in several damaging earthquake sequences of the Italian Apennine belt. In the central Apennines, the 2009 L’Aquila Mw 6.3 earthquake was followed, the day after, by an Mw 5.6 event occurred at the southeast edge of the main fault. This seismic sequence has been the deadliest one in Italy, with almost 300 victims, since 1980. The seismicity of the whole sequence spread over a 40 km long fault system (Chiarabba et al., 2009). The 2002 Molise seismic sequence is remembered for two major shocks Mw 5.8 and 5.7 that occurred within a few hours causing severe damage and destroying a school populated by children (Vallèe and Di Luccio, 2005). The 1997–1998 Umbria–Marche seismic sequence was characterized by two mainshocks breaking adjacent parts of two faults and occurring a few hours from each other (Pino and Mazza, 2000). Overall, this sequence numbered six shocks of moderate magnitude (5:2 ≤ Mw ≤ 6:0), occurring along a 40 km line. The 1980Irpinia earthquake, with surface-wave magnitude Ms 6.9, was indeed composed by the sequence of three distinct subevents, nucleating on different faults at intervals of about 20 s, resulting in a total seismic moment M0 2:6 × 1019 N·m (Pingue et al., 1993; Troise et al., 1998). This event caused about 3000 deaths and huge damage. In all the above cited sequences, the total length of the fractured fault zone was approximately the same, that is, about 50 km. In this article, we simulate a consecutive seismic sequence using the seismograms recorded during the Emilia sequence. Our hypothesis is that the design spectrum may be exceeded when the seven major (Mw 〉5) earthquakes were to occur one immediately after the other. As our results show, structures can be stressed by consecutive wavetrains, possibly characterized by an increase of acceleration and displacement amplitude due to resonance. The obtained results suggest that at least for specific design applications, such as for strategic structures (i.e., power plants, nuclear waste disposals, bridges, hospitals, etc.) seismic-hazard analyses and design spectra should take into account the possibility that several mainshocks can be triggered consecutively, resulting in a ground shaking highly increased in amplitude and duration.

    Description: Understanding and quantifying the global methane (CH4) budget is important for assessing realistic pathways to mitigate climate change. Atmospheric emissions and concentrations of CH4 continue to increase, making CH4 the second most important human-influenced greenhouse gas in terms of climate forcing, after carbon dioxide (CO2). The relative importance of CH4 compared to CO2 depends on its shorter atmospheric lifetime, stronger warming potential, and variations in atmospheric growth rate over the past decade, the causes of which are still debated. Two major challenges in reducing uncertainties in the atmospheric growth rate arise from the variety of geographically overlapping CH4 sources and from the destruction of CH4 by short-lived hydroxyl radicals (OH). To address these challenges, we have established a consortium of multidisciplinary scientists under the umbrella of the Global Carbon Project to synthesize and stimulate new research aimed at improving and regularly updating the global methane budget. Following Saunois et al. (2016), we present here the second version of the living review paper dedicated to the decadal methane budget, integrating results of top-down studies (atmospheric observations within an atmospheric inverse-modelling framework) and bottomup estimates (including process-based models for estimating land surface emissions and atmospheric chemistry, inventories of anthropogenic emissions, and data-driven extrapolations). For the 2008–2017 decade, global methane emissions are estimated by atmospheric inversions (a top-down approach) to be 576 TgCH4 yr􀀀1 (range 550–594, corresponding to the minimum and maximum estimates of the model ensemble). Of this total, 359 TgCH4 yr􀀀1 or 60% is attributed to anthropogenic sources, that is emissions caused by direct human activity (i.e. anthropogenic emissions; range 336–376 TgCH4 yr􀀀1 or 50 %–65 %). The mean annual total emission for the new decade (2008–2017) is 29 TgCH4 yr􀀀1 larger than our estimate for the previous decade (2000–2009), and 24 TgCH4 yr􀀀1 larger than the one reported in the previous budget for 2003–2012 (Saunois et al., 2016). Since 2012, global CH4 emissions have been tracking the warmest scenarios assessed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Bottom-up methods suggest almost 30% larger global emissions (737 TgCH4 yr􀀀1, range 594–881) than top-down inversion methods. Indeed, bottom-up estimates for natural sources such as natural wetlands, other inland water systems, and geological sources are higher than top-down estimates. The atmospheric constraints on the top-down budget suggest that at least some of these bottom-up emissions are overestimated. The latitudinal distribution of atmospheric observation-based emissions indicates a predominance of tropical emissions ( 65% of the global budget, 〈30 N) compared to mid-latitudes ( 30 %, 30–60 N) and high northern latitudes ( 4 %, 60–90 N). The most important source of uncertainty in the methane budget is attributable to natural emissions, especially those from wetlands and other inland waters. Some of our global source estimates are smaller than those in previously published budgets (Saunois et al., 2016; Kirschke et al., 2013). In particular wetland emissions are about 35 TgCH4 yr􀀀1 lower due to improved partition wetlands and other inland waters. Emissions from geological sources and wild animals are also found to be smaller by 7 TgCH4 yr􀀀1 by 8 TgCH4 yr􀀀1, respectively. However, the overall discrepancy between bottom-up and top-down estimates has been reduced by only 5% compared to Saunois et al. (2016), due to a higher estimate of emissions from inland waters, highlighting the need for more detailed research on emissions factors. Priorities for improving the methane budget include (i) a global, high-resolution map of water-saturated soils and inundated areas emitting methane based on a robust classification of different types of emitting habitats; (ii) further development of process-based models for inland-water emissions; (iii) intensification of methane observations at local scales (e.g., FLUXNET-CH4 measurements) and urban-scale monitoring to constrain bottom-up land surface models, and at regional scales (surface networks and satellites) to constrain atmospheric inversions; (iv) improvements of transport models and the representation of photochemical sinks in top-down inversions; and (v) development of a 3D variational inversion system using isotopic and/or co-emitted species such as ethane to improve source partitioning.

    Description: Understanding the viscosity of mantle-derived magmas is needed to model their migration mechanisms and ascent rate from the source rock to the surface. High pressure–temperature experimental data are now available on the viscosity of synthetic melts, pure carbonatitic to carbonate–silicate compositions, anhydrous basalts, dacites and rhyolites. However, the viscosity of volatile-bearing melilititic melts, among the most plausible carriers of deep carbon, has not been investigated. In this study, we experimentally determined the viscosity of synthetic liquids with ~31 and ~39 wt% SiO2, 1.60 and 1.42 wt% CO2 and 5.7 and 1 wt% H2O, respectively, at pressures from 1 to 4.7 GPa and temperatures between 1265 and 1755 C, using the falling-sphere technique combined with in situ X-ray radiography. Our results show viscosities between 0.1044 and 2.1221 Pa s, with a clear dependence on temperature and SiO2 content. The atomic structure of both melt compositions was also determined at high pressure and temperature, using in situ multi-angle energy-dispersive X-ray di raction supported by ex situ microFTIR and microRaman spectroscopic measurements. Our results yield evidence that the T–T and T–O (T = Si,Al) interatomic distances of ultrabasic melts are higher than those for basaltic melts known from similar recent studies. Based on our experimental data, melilititic melts are expected to migrate at a rate ~from 2 to 57 km yr􀀀1 in the present-day or the Archaean mantle, respectively.

    Description: Da molto tempo il rischio vulcanico è al centro di progetti di divulgazione scientifica, particolarmente in area napoletana, dove l’Osservatorio Vesuviano ha sempre promosso numerose iniziative dedicate all’informazione su pericolosità e rischio vulcanico. In particolare sono state realizzate iniziative formative nelle scuole, sviluppate in collaborazione con il Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, e attività mirate a raggiungere la popolazione più in generale attraverso le visite guidate al Museo della sede storica, oppure con incontri pubblici, mostre, workshops, ecc. organizzati in collaborazione con la Città della Scienza e altri Enti locali. Dal 2005 questa attività formativa si è arricchita attraverso il progetto EDURISK, un’iniziativa più propriamente dedicata all’educazione al rischio sismico e vulcanico nelle scuole, con la realizzazione di corsi di formazione per gli insegnanti. Una delle esperienze più interessanti sviluppate dal progetto EDURISK, è stata la realizzazione nell’anno scolastico 20172018 di un’indagine sull’immaginario di bambini e ragazzi sul rischio vulcanico, con l’obiettivo di individuare, attraverso un’attività creativa l’invenzione di una storia in ambiente vulcanico come percepiscono il contesto vulcanico in cui vivono, come immaginano che possa verificarsi un’eruzione e quale potrebbe essere la loro capacità di risposta. L’indagine è stata realizzata in 23 classi di scuola primaria e secondaria di I grado di Istituti Comprensivi di area vesuviana (Ercolano, Scafati, Torre del Greco) e flegrea (Marano di Napoli, Pozzuoli, Quarto), coinvolgendo complessivamente circa 500 bambini fra gli 8 e i 12 anni. Fra i tanti temi emersi, tre sono fondamentali. In area flegrea la percezione di vivere ‘dentro’ un vulcano è praticamente assente: è pertanto indispensabile attivare percorsi di conoscenza del territorio in cui si vive; per i bambini il passaggio dalla comparsa dei precursori e l’eruzione vera e propria è istantaneo: mancano quindi conoscenze scientifiche specifiche, compresa l’incertezza sulla possibile evoluzione dei fenomeni; infine in caso di eruzione i bambini pensano di doversi salvare da soli: nelle loro storie non esistono istituzioni, un sistema organizzato di protezione civile e di gestione dell’emergenza: è quindi indispensabile e urgente un lavoro educativo sul riconoscimento delle risorse della comunità e di ricostruzione della fiducia fra cittadini e istituzioni.

    Description: We present a set of revised ground motion models (GMMs) for shallow events at Mt. Etna volcano. The recent occurrence of damaging events, in particular two of the strongest earthquakes ever instrumentally recorded in the area, has required revising previous GMMs as these failed to match the observations made for events with local magnitude ML 〉4.3, above all for sites situated close to the epicenter. The dataset now includes 49 seismic events, with a total of 1600 time histories recorded at distances of up to 100 km, and ML ranging from 3.0 and 4.8. The model gives estimates of peak ground acceleration (PGA, both horizontal and vertical), peak ground velocity (PGV, both horizontal and vertical) and 5%-damped horizontal pseudoacceleration response spectral ordinates (PSA) up to a period of 4 s. GMMs were developed by using the functional form proposed by Boore and Atkinson (2008). Furthermore, with a slightly modified approach, we also considered a regression model using a pseudo-depth (h) depending on magnitude according to the scaling law by Azzaro et al . (2017). Both models were applied to hypocentral distance ranges of up to 60 km, and up to 100 km, respectively. From the statistical analysis, we found that reducing the maximum distance from the event up to 60 km and introducing a magnitude-dependent pseudo-depth, improved the model in terms of total error. We compared our results to those derived with the GMMs for shallow events at Mt. Etna found by Tusa and Langer (2016) and for volcanic areas by Lanzano and Luzi (2019). The main differences are observed at short epicentral distances and for higher magnitude events. The use of variable pseudo-depth avoids sharp peaks of predicted ground motion parameters around the epicenter, preventing instabilities when using a GMM in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis.

    Description: The study of medium-large magnitude and intermediate-high intensity (VEI = 4/5; Column Height 15-20 km) eruptions fed by poorly evolved magmas is one of the main topics in volcanology. In this framework, the 472 CE (Pollena) eruption from Somma-Vesuvius (Italy) represents a key case study, as it is one of the subplinian eruptions used to constrain the reference scenario adopted by the Italian Department of Civil Protection in case of renewal activity at Somma-Vesuvius. The Pollena eruption experienced a complex dynamics, with abrupt shifts in eruptive style. This study focused on the fall products (L1- L8) of the magmatic eruptive phases (Phases I and II), which preceded the onset of the final phreatomagmatic phase (Phase III). Phase I was characterized by unsteady magma discharge resulting in an oscillating convective column, whereas Phase II involved pulsating activity with alternation of sustained and collapsing columns. To evaluate the role of textural variability in controlling magma rheology (and therefore variations in magma discharge), a detailed textural analysis of the juvenile products has been performed. Pyroclast textures record a variable degree of outgassing efficiency and lateral textural stratification of magma in the conduit, related to differential magma ascent rates and resulting in variable eruption intensity. Repetitive patterns of magma densification, achieved by progressive outgassing and crystallization, led to stages of decreasing ascent velocity resulting in the end of the eruptive pulse (during the oscillatory Phase I) or anticipating PDC emplacement (at the end of Phase I and during the pulsatory Phase II). Further decompression of the outgassed magma induced intense clinopyroxene microlite crystallization, that markedly increased magma viscosity and promoted the restoration of sustained columns during the eruption climaxes (L3 and L8). Magma densification patterns and consequent unsteadiness in magma discharge at the surface may derive from small heterogeneities in the initial volatile budget and/or represent a natural evolution of low viscosity magmas, as those feeding Pollena eruption, where efficient crystallization in the conduit can deeply and abruptly modify magma rheology, outgassing ability, conduit flow and, ultimately, eruptive style.

    Description: Mapping the static gravity field in the Italian area is fundamental to identify the main lithospheric structures, to delineate the main geological elements at regional level and to infer the regional geodynamic setting. The ongoing tectonic processes highlight nevertheless the need to measure and model the time-variable gravity field, namely the dynamic gravity field, which requires increased accuracy and long time series of observations to separate the secular from the short-term variable components. The first, with a minor impact in Italy, are due to variations of ice mass balance (the viscoelastic response of the Earth to past changes in ice mass loading, and the elastic response of the Earth to present-day deglaciation), and the sealevel rise; the second are due to space/time variations of underground mass distributions, such as those related to seismic deformations, volcanic dynamics/eruptions and water transfer. Local-scale gravity studies along seismogenic faults may provide useful hints to study the seismic cycle and to unravel those areas more prone to seismic release by studying if the crustal volume is undergoing dilatancy (gravity decrease) or overpressure (gravity increase) before earthquake occurrence. This process, however, is accompanied by possible fluid migration, which can be revealed by other geophysical measurements, for example, by magnetotelluric and geoelectrical surveys. In this short paper, we briefly summarize the main sources of gravity variation providing on the same time orders of magnitude, spatial and temporal scales of their effects.

    Description: In supervised classification, we search criteria allowing us to decide whether a sample belongs to a certain class of patterns. The identification of such decision functions is based on examples where we know a priori to which class they belong. The distinction of seismic signals, produced from earthquakes and nuclear explosions, is a classical problem of discrimination using classification with supervision. We move on from observed data—signals originating from known earthquakes and nuclear tests—and search for criteria on how to assign a class to a signal of unknown origin. We begin with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLDA), identifying a linear element separating groups at best. PCA, FLDA, and likelihood-based approaches make use of statistical properties of the groups. Considering only the number of misclassified samples as a cost, we may prefer alternatives, such as the Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs). The Support Vector Machines (SVMs) use a modified cost function, combining the criterion of the minimum number of misclassified samples with a request of separating the hulls of the groups with a margin as wide as possible. Both SVMs and MLPs overcome the limits of linear discrimination. A famous example for the advantages of the two techniques is the eXclusive OR (XOR) problem, where we wish to form classes of objects having the same parity—even, e.g., (0,0), (1,1) or odd, e.g., (0,1), (1,0). MLPs and SVMs offer effective methods for the identification of nonlinear decision functions, allowing us to resolve classification problems of any complexity provided the data set used during earning is sufficiently large. In Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), we consider observations where their meaning depends on their context. Observations form a causal chain generated by a hidden process. In Bayesian Networks (BNs) we represent conditional (in)dependencies between a set of random variables by a graphical model. In both HMMs and BNs, we aim at identifying models and parameters that explain observations with a highest possible degree of probability.

    Description: A long-lasting question in earthquake physics is why slip on faults occurs as creep or dynamic rupture. We compute passive measurements of the seismic P wave velocity gradient across the San Andreas Fault near Parkfield, where this transition of slip mode occurs at a scale of a few kilometers. Unbiased measurements are obtained through the application of a new Bayesian local earthquake tomographic code that avoids the imposition of any user-defined, initial velocity-contrast across the fault, or any damping scheme that may cause biased amplitude in retrieved seismic velocities. We observe that across-fault velocity gradients correlate with the slip behavior of the fault. The P wave velocity contrast decays from 20% in the fault section that experience dynamic rupture to 4% in the creeping section, suggesting that rapid change of material properties and attitude to sustain supra-hydrostatic fluid pressure are conditions for development of dynamic rupture. Low Vp and high Vp/Vs suggest that fault rheology at shallow depth is conversely controlled by low frictional strength material.

    Description: Patterns and objects are described by a variety of characteristics, namely features and feature vectors. Features can be numerical, ordinal, and categorical. Patterns can be made up of a number of objects, such as in speech processing. In geophysics, numerical features are the most common ones and we focus on those. The choice of appropriate features requires a priori reasoning about the physical relation between patterns and features. We present strategies for feature identification and procedures suitable for pattern recognition. In time series analysis and image processing, the direct use of raw data is not feasible. Procedures of feature extraction, based on locally encountered characteristics of the data, are applied. Here we present the problem of delineating segments of interest in time series and textures in image processing. In transformations, we “translate” our raw data to a form suitable for learning. In Principal Component Analysis, we rotate the original features to a system of uncorrelated variables, limiting redundancy. Independent Component Analysis follows a similar strategy, transforming our data into variables independent of each other. Fourier transform and wavelet transform are based on the representation of the original data as a series of basis functions—sines and cosines or finite-length wavelets. Redundancy reduction is achieved considering the contributions of the single basis functions. Even though a large number of features help to solve a classification problem, feature vectors with high dimensions pose severe problems. Besides the computational burden, we encounter problems known under the term “curse of dimensionality.” The curse of dimensionality entails the necessity of feature selection and reduction, which includes a priori considerations as well as redundancy reduction. The significance of features may be evaluated with tests, such as Student’s t or Hotelling's T2, and, in more complex problems, with cross-validation methods.

    Description: In the frame of Radon rEal time monitoring System and Proactive Indoor Remediation (RESPIRE), a LIFE 2016 project funded by the European Commission, the contribution of building materials of volcanic origin to indoor radon concentration was investigated. First, total gamma radiation and related outdoor dose rates of geological materials in the Caprarola area (Central Italy) were measured to defi ne main sources of radiation. Second, Rn-222 and Rn-220 exhalation rates of these rocks used as building materials were measured using an accumulation chamber connected in a closed loop with a RAD7 radon monitor. Among others, the very porous “Tufo di Gallese” ignimbrite provided the highest values. This material was then used to construct a scale model room of 62 cm × 50 cm × 35 cm (inner length × width × height, respectively) to assess experimental radon and thoron activity concentration at equilibrium and study the effects of climatic conditions and different coatings on radon levels. A fi rst test was carried out at ambient temperature to determine experimental Rn-222 and Rn-220 equilibrium activities in the model room, not covered with plaster or other coating materials. Experimental Rn-222 equilibrium was recorded in just two days demonstrating that the room “breaths”, exchanging air with the outdoor environment. This determines a dilution of indoor radon concentration. Other experiments showed that inner covers (such as plasterboard and different kinds of paints) partially infl uence Rn-222 but entirely cut the short-lived Rn-220. Finally, decreases in ambient temperature reduce radon exhalation from building material and, in turn, indoor activity concentration.

    Description: In the last decades, Mt. Stromboli produced four vulcanian eruptions, in 2003 and 2007 and July and August 2019, recorded by INGV monitoring network. Specifically, last three events are studied through records from borehole strainmeters, which allow to infer details on source dynamics. These events are preceded by a slow strain buildup, starting several minutes before the paroxysms, which can be used in future for early warning. Eruptions consist of two or more strain pulses, with oscillations ranging from several seconds, as in 2007, to some minutes, as in 2019, and lasting from several minutes to 1 hr after the explosions.

    Description: Abstract: The dynamic of groundwater systems feeding several springs of the Sibillini Mountains was deeply affected by nine Mw 5.0÷6.5 seismic events occurred in central Italy starting from August 2016. The strongest shock occurred on October 30th 2016 about 5 km NNE of Norcia Town, 9 km below the surface, as a result of upper crust normal faulting on the nearly 30 km-long Mt Vettore - Mt Bove fault system, a NW-SE trending, SW-dipping fault system outcropping on the western slope of Mt Vettore, the highest peak of Sibillini Mountains. Soon after this event, a general increase of springs and rivers discharge and groundwater levels was observed both in the Visso and Norcia areas, west of the Sibillini Mountains. In the Visso area the hydrogeological changes due to the seismic sequence exhausted in the 2019, while nowadays both discharges and groundwater levels are still higher than before in the Norcia area. Discharge data of the main springs located east, south-east of the Sibillini Mountains were analysed to verify whether the general increase observed on the western side was associated to a decrease on the eastern and southern-east area. The results show that the springs located on the eastern side and southern-east side of Mt Vettore experienced a significant long-term discharge decrease. In this preliminary work, the analysis of the historical discharge series of the Pescara di Arquata spring (SE of Mt Vettore), and its relationship with the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) shows that the very low discharge values recorded during the post-seismic period are not associated with SPI as low as documented in the past for similar discharges. Moreover, the stable isotopic composition of Pescara di Arquata water during the post-earthquake period is slightly different from that measured before the seismic events; this suggests that a lower amount of water having more enriched isotopic δ18O content reaches the spring after the seismic sequence. These aspects seem to indicate that groundwater circulation in the southern-east area of Sibillini Mountains has been affected by the 2016-2017 seismic sequence

    Description: Shear tests on quartz rocks and single quartz crystals have been conducted to understand the possible relationship between the intensity of detectable stress in fault areas and the energy released in the form of electromagnetic waves in the range 30 KHz-1 MHz (LF–MF). For these tests, a new type of piston-cylinder has been developed, instrumented to collect the electromagnetic signals generated by the quartz during shear stress tests and that allows energy measurements on electromagnetic emissions (EMR) to be performed. The data obtained indicate that shear-stressed quartz crystals can generate electromagnetic emissions in the LF–MF range. These emissions represent a tiny fraction of the total energy dissipated in the fracturing process. The spectrum of radio emissions consists of continuous radiation and overlapping peaks. For the first time, a characteristic migration of peak frequencies was observed, proportional to the evolution of the fracturing process. In particular, the continuous recording of the radio emission spectra shows a migration of the peaks toward higher frequencies, as stress continues over time and smaller and larger fractures form. This migration could be used to distinguish possible natural signals emitted by quartz in tectonically active environments from possible signals of other geophysical and possibly anthropogenic origin.

    Description: Hazard reduction policies include seismic hazard maps based on probabilistic evaluations and the evaluation of geophysical parameters continuously recorded by instrumental networks. Over the past 25 centuries, a large amount of information about earthquake precursory phenomena has been recorded by scholars, scientific institutions, and civil defense agencies. In particular, hydrogeologic measurements and geochemical analyses have been performed in geofluids in search of possible and reliable earthquake precursors. Controlled experimental areas have been set up to investigate physical and chemical mechanisms originating possible preseismic precursory signals. The main test sites for such research are located in China, Iceland, Japan, the Russian Federation, Taiwan, and the USA. The present state of the art about the most relevant scientific achievements has been described. Future research trends and possible development paths have been identified and allow for possible improvements in policies oriented to seismic hazard reduction by geofluid monitoring.

    Description: This study assesses the correlations between the intensity of stress undergone by crystals and the morphological characteristics of particles and fracturing products. The e ects of the fractures on the microstructure of quartz are also studied. Alpha quartz, subjected to shear stress, is quickly crushed according to a fracturing sequence, with a total fracture length that is correlated to the stress rate. The shear stress generates a sequence of macro and microstructural events, in particular localized melting phenomena, never highlighted before on quartz and the formation of di erent polymorphs, such as cristobalite and tridymite together with amorphous silica.

    Description: The small island of Ustica was a regular part of the obsidian distribution network in the central Mediterranean, despite its location more than 50 km north of western Sicily. More than 1000 obsidian artifacts from several different sites, ranging in age from the Neolithic through Bronze Age, were analyzed using a non-destructive, portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Obsidian from Lipari-Gabellotto dominates the assemblages at all sites tested, yet Pantelleria obsidian from both Balata dei Turchi and Lago di Venere are of notable quantities. Obsidian was not likely a major part of the material transported across open waters to this seemingly remote location, while our data support the hypothesis that some direct travel occurred from the Aeolian Islands to Ustica.

    Description: Central Apennines are one of the highest seismic risk regions in Italy. A number of energetic events (MW 〉 5) struck the region during the period 2004–2017, killing several hundreds of people (e.g., 294 casualties associated with the August 24th, 2016, MW 6.0 event of Amatrice). These earthquakes impacted piezometric levels, springs discharges, and groundwater chemistry across a large area, even at distances of dozens of kilometers from the epicenters. Here we present a multidisciplinary dataset based on hydrogeochemical and satellite observations associated with the seismic events that occurred in Central Italy during the period 2004–2017, which combines information derived from the application of groundwater monitoring and satellite techniques. Groundwater monitoring techniques allowed for the detection of hydrogeochemical anomalies in spring and well waters (14 water sampling points in total, with 22 variations larger than 2σ), while satellite techniques were applied to detect time-space variations in ground thermal emissions. We detected two significant, almost synchronous, anomalies in 2009 and 2016–2017 with both techniques, and we tentatively correlated them to crustal deformation processes. Part of the observed signals were detected before mainshocks, and they appear to be related to aseismic slip or to seismic slip eventually induced by minor fluctuations in seismicity. We argue that the combination of two factors, i.e., the shallow depth of local earthquakes and the concurrent deepening of groundwater circulation paths to several km depth, allow for the recording of variations in the stress field by geofluids released at the surface.

    Description: Nowadays, climate changes and increased water demand for human and agricultural purposes pose important questions for the groundwater management of alluvial aquifers facing the northern Italian Apennines. The large groundwater withdrawals, coupled with an overall worsening of the water quality, requires a detailed knowledge of the recharge mechanisms of these aquifers that can be useful for further adaptation measures. Concerning the recharge area of the alluvial aquifers (i.e., apices made up of gravelly materials), the present study investigates a dataset made up of 282 water samples for which stable isotopes oxygen-18 (18O) and deuterium (2H) are available. The latter involves precipitations (three rain gauges), surface water (five rivers) and groundwater (twenty wells) from five selected alluvial fans. The study confirms that the di erent isotopic signatures characterizing rain and river water from this area can be exploited for preliminary characterization of their significance on groundwater recharge. These results lay the foundations for the further use of a suite of environmental tracers (in which a primary role is that of water stable isotopes) at the event-scale (i.e., that of rainfall and/or flood) for eventually estimating the e ective quota of recharge linked to precipitation and surface water.

    Description: There is growing interest in how geofluid emissions are released in the atmosphere by the planet’s geodynamic activity, and how much they contribute to the global budget of greenhouse gases. Many workers are addressing this issue with studies conducted at global scale, so as to get the required global-scale answers. The data available at the global scale on geofluids, faults, earthquakes and volcanoes, however, are generally too coarse to provide these answers. We investigate the relationships between geofluid emissions and tectonics at a more detailed scale. Building on over a century of data on geofluid emissions and on an extensive knowledge of the region’s tectonics and seismicity, we focused on Italy, one of the areas of the globe that experience the largest release of natural CO2 and CH4. We systematically overlaid and compared data collected by a number of workers into 13 published countrywide databases concerning geofluid emissions, carbonbearing deposits, seismogenic faults, historical and instrumentally documented earthquakes, and heat flow observations. Our results indicate that 1) thermal springs and CO2 emissions dominate in areas of mantle upwelling and crustal stretching, but also that 2) some of them occur in the extending inner Apennines, generally along major lithospheric chain-perpendicular lineaments that bound the largest normal faults. Conversely, 3) CH4 emissions and mud volcanoes dominate in areas undergoing active contraction, where no CO2 emissions are observed; in particular, we find 4) that mud volcanoes concentrate where the crests of active anticlines intersect major lithospheric chain-perpendicular lineaments. An overarching conclusion is that, in Italy, the release of geofluids is primarily controlled by deep crustal discontinuities that developed over the course of 5–10 My, and is only mildly affected by ongoing crustal strains. Geofluid emissions bring information on processes that occur primarily in the lower crust, marking the surface projection of generally hidden discontinuities that control the geometry and modes of seismic release. As such they may also provide valuable insight for improving the assessment of seismic hazard in hard-to-investigate seismically active regions, such as Italy.

    Description: The analysis of earthquake focal mechanisms provides information about the stress regime, fault geometry, and deformation processes acting in a given region. Generally, the techniques aimed at determining focal mechanism are designed to work in a specific magnitude range operating both in the time and frequency domain and using different data (e.g., P polarities, S-wave polarization, S/P-amplitude ratios, etc.). In this article, we present a new method, Bayesian inversion of spectral-level ratios and P-wave polarities (BISTROP), that can be applied to both small and moderate-to-large magnitude events. BISTROP uses a Bayesian approach to jointly invert the long-period spectral- level P/S ratios and the P polarities to infer the fault-plane solutions. We apply this method to analyze synthetic data as well as those generated by real earthquakes. We find that the obtained solutions for moderate earthquakes are comparable with those obtained using moment tensor inversion, and they are more constrained with respect to the solutions obtained using only P-polarity data for small earthquakes.

    Description: In the presented work, the spectral emissivity of basaltic melts at magmatic temperatures was retrieved in a laboratory-controlled experiment by measuring their spectral radiance. Granulated bombs of Etnean basalts were melted and the radiant energy from the melting surface was recorded by a portable spectroradiometer in the short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectral range between 1500 and 2500 nm. The Draping algorithm, an improved algorithm for temperature and emissivity separation, was applied for the first time to SWIR hyperspectral data in order to take into account the non-uniform temperature distribution of the melt surface and, at the same time, solving the two temperatures and the spectral emissivity. The results have been validated by comparing our results with the emissivity measured at a "lava simulator". Basalt spectral emissivity does not vary significantly at magmatic temperature, but shows an absorption feature in the range 2180–2290 nm, an atmospheric window pivotal for the IR remote sensing of active volcanoes

    Description: Ocean acidification is one of the most dramatic effects of the massive atmospheric release of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution, although its effects on marine ecosystems are not well understood. Submarine volcanic hydrothermal fields have geochemical conditions that provide opportunities to characterise the effects of elevated levels of seawater CO2 on marine life in the field. Here, we review the geochemical aspects of shallow marine CO2-rich seeps worldwide, focusing on both gas composition and water chemistry. We then describe the geochemical effects of volcanic CO2 seepage on the overlying seawater column. We also present new geochemical data and the first synthesis of marine biological community changes from one of the best-studied marine CO2 seep sites in the world (off Vulcano Island, Sicily). In areas of intense bubbling, extremely high levels of pCO2 ([10,000 latm) result in low seawater pH (\6) and undersaturation of aragonite and calcite in an area devoid of calcified organisms such as shelled molluscs and hard corals. Around 100–400 m away from the Vulcano seeps the geochemistry of the seawater becomes analogous to future ocean acidification conditions with dissolved carbon dioxide levels falling from 900 to 420 latm as seawater pH rises from 7.6 to 8.0. Calcified species such as coralline algae and sea urchins fare increasingly well as sessile communities shift from domination by a few resilient species (such as uncalcified algae and polychaetes) to a diverse and complex community (including abundant calcified algae and sea urchins) as the seawater returns to ambient levels of CO2. Laboratory advances in our understanding of species sensitivity to high CO2 and low pH seawater, reveal how marine organisms react to simulated ocean acidification conditions (e.g., using energetic tradeoffs for calcification, reproduction, growth and survival). Research at volcanic marine seeps, such as those off Vulcano, highlight consistent ecosystem responses to rising levels of seawater CO2, with the simplification of food webs, losses in functional diversity and reduced provisioning of goods and services for humans.

    Description: Using satellite-based remote sensing to investigate volcanic eruptions is a common approach for preliminary research, chiefly because a great amount of freely available data can be effectively accessed. Here, Landsat 4-5TM, 7ETM+, and 8OLI night-time satellite images are used to estimate lava flow temperatures and radiation heat fluxes from selected volcanic eruptions worldwide. After retrieving the spectral radiance, the pixel values were transformed into temperatures using the calculated calibration constants. Results showed that the TIR and SWIR bands were saturated and unable to detect temperatures over the active lava flows. However, temperatures were effectively detected over the active lava flows in the range ~500–1060 ◦C applying the NIR-, red-, green- or blue-band. Application of the panchromatic band with 15 m resolution also revealed details of lava flow morphology. The calculated radiant heat flux for the lava flows accords with increasing cooling either with slope or with distance from the vent.

    Description: The magnetic poles or dip poles are the points on the Earth's surface and circum‐terrestrial area where the magnetic field is vertical, so the horizontal component vanishes. They are not coincident with geomagnetic poles, which are the points where the dipole axis, obtained by analytic models, intersects the Earth's surface, and their instrumental sampling determination from ad hoc ground surveys is difficult due to the harsh environmental conditions and remoteness of the areas where they are located. In this work, we use magnetic field measurements from ESA's Swarm satellites covering 5 years (2015‐2019), and determine the position of the magnetic poles by modelling the yearly average horizontal magnetic field component through analytic 2D Taylor polynomial fit and finding the locations where this component is minimum. The yearly dip poles positions at average satellites geocentric altitudes are also projected at ground level based on WGS84 geodetic reference system. Reliability of our method is evaluated by an optimized Monte Carlo test applied to combined IGRF model and Swarm data. The availability of several years of data allows us to investigate the long term variation and dynamics of the magnetic poles, also in comparison with the results provided by IGRF model (both IGRF12 and IGRF13). Our results agree with the model, in better accordance in the north hemisphere with IGRF13, indicating that both magnetic poles move in the north‐west direction, with a speed of ∼37‐72 km/y (lower in year 2016) for the north dip pole and of ∼5‐9 km/y for the south one.

    Description: Radon monitoring represents an important investigation tool for environmental changes assessment and geochemical hazard surveillance. Despite anomalous radon emissions are commonly observed prior to earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, radon monitoring alone is not yet successful in correctly predicting these catastrophic events because contrasting radon signals are unexpectedly measured by lithologically distinct areas. This contribution aims to summarize and integrate natural and laboratory studies pertaining to the transport behavior of radon in different rock types experiencing variable stress and thermal regimes at subvolcanic conditions. The final purpose is to ignite novel and pioneer experimental researches exploring the causes and consequences of radon anomalous emissions, in order to elucidate in full the relationship between the physicochemical changes in substrate rocks and the radon signal.

    Description: In March 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization and became a global health crisis. Authorities worldwide implemented lockdowns to restrict travel and social exchanges in a global effort to counter the pandemic. In France, and in French overseas departments, the lockdown was effective from 17 March to 11 May 2020. It was in this context that the 2–6 April 2020 eruption of Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion Island, Indian Ocean) took place. Upon the announcement of the lockdown in France, a reduced activity plan was set up by the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, which manages the Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF). The aim was to (1) maintain remote mon- itoring operations by teleworking and (2) authorize fieldwork only for critical reasons, such as serious breakdowns of stations or transmission relays. This eruption provided an opportunity for the observatory to validate its capacity to manage a volcanic crisis with 100% remotely operated monitoring networks. We thus present the long- and short-term precursors to the eruption, and the evolution of the eruption recorded using the real-time monitoring data as communicated to the stakeholders. The data were from both continuously recording and transmitting field instruments as well as satellites. The volcano observatory staff remotely managed the volcano crisis with the various stake- holders based only on these remotely functioning networks. Monitoring duties were also assured in the absence of ad hoc field investigation of the eruption by observatory staff or face-to-face communications. The density and reliability of the OVPF networks, com- bined with satellite observations, allowed for trustworthy instrument-based monitoring of the eruption and continuity of the OVPF duties in issuing regular updates of volcanic activity in the context of a double crisis: volcanic and health.

    Description: A new seismic dilatometer (SPDMT) has been developed to combine the measurements of the flat dilatometer (DMT) geotechnical parameters with both P- and S- waves velocities. This new SPDMT is composed of the traditional mechanical DMT and four sensors for measuring the body waves velocities placed above the DMT blade. This SPDMT device is presented here, and the test procedure and the interpretation of P- and S-wave measurements are discussed. Results of the application of this new instrument are reported in a test site located in Bondeno (Emilia Romagna, Italy). Here, challenging water table conditions offer the opportunity to evaluate the advantage of a combined measure of the two propagation velocities, together with DMT geotechnical parameters, with the same apparatus for the porosity evaluation and a more calibrated liquefaction assessment.

    Description: Since 2015, the ongoing project “Harvesting Memories” has been focused on long-term landscape dynamics in Sicani Mountains (Western Sicily). Archaeological excavations in the case study site of Contrada Castro (Corleone) have investigated a settlement which was mainly occupied during the Early Middle Ages (late 8th–11th century AD). This paper aims to understand the historical suitability and sustainability of this area analysing the correlation between the current dynamics of plant communities and the historical use of woods detected by the archaeobotanical record. An integrated approach between phytosociology and archaeobotany has been applied. The vegetation series of the study area has been used as a model to understand the ecological meaning and spatial distribution of archaeobotanical data on charcoals from the Medieval layers of the Contrada Castro site. The intersection between the frequency data of the archaeobotanical record and the phytosociological analysis have confirmed the maintenance of the same plant communities during the last millennium due to the sustainable exploitation of wood resources. An integrated comparison between the structure and composition of current phytocoenoses with archaeobotanical data allowed us to confirm that this landscape is High Nature Value (HNV) farmland and to interpret the historical vegetation dynamics linked to the activities and economy of a rural community.

    Description: The investigation of soil response to dynamic loads is necessary to predict site-specific seismic hazard. This paper presents the results of cyclic and dynamic laboratory tests carried out after the 2016–2017 Central Italy Earthquake sequence, within the framework of the seismic microzonation studies of the most damaged municipalities in the area. The database consists of 79 samples investigated by means of dynamic resonant column tests, cyclic torsional shear tests or cyclic direct simple shear tests. Results are firstly analysed in terms of field and laboratory values of small-strain shear wave velocity, highlighting the influence of the sample disturbance and of the mean effective consolidation pressure. The cyclic threshold shear strains as a function of plasticity index are then compared with findings from the published literature and the outliers are analysed. Subsequently, the dynamic soil behaviour is investigated with reference to the small-strain damping ratio. Differences between results from different tests are analysed in the light of the loading frequencies. Finally, the database is used to develop a predictive model for soil nonlinear curves according to plasticity index, mean effective confining stress, and loading frequency. The model represents a useful tool to predict the nonlinear stress–strain behaviour of Central Italy soils, necessary to perform site-specific ground response analyses.

    Description: Carbon dioxide, radon and methane gases were measured in the Topolšica area in water wells and in diffuse emissions in order to model the mechanisms of gas transport to the surface through a faulted geothermal area. As expected, the largest gas emissions were found near the main fault planes or in areas were minor shallow crustal fractures occur, thus pointing to the fundamental role of faults in driving the rise of deep hot fluids to the surface. The source of CO2 was likely deep, whereas radon is probably shallower (hydrothermal) and was carried to the surface by the high CO2 flux. Occurrence of high concentrations of free gases in the water wells can be explained with mixing of deep hydrothermal fluids with shallow cold groundwaters and with different dissolution of gases into the latter. The results have shown the existence of an important geothermal potential in the area and the need for a better monitoring of radon accumulation into buildings to prevent health problems.

    Description: This paper presents the results of measurements performed on -quartz subjected to shear stress in dry conditions, to understand the relationship between the shear intensity and the resulting physical and chemical e ects. If a shear stress of intensity higher than 100 MPa is applied continuously to alpha quartz crystals, they will tend to lose their crystallinity, progressively reduce their friction coe cient (Cof) and change into a low-order material, apparently amorphous under X-ray di raction, but with a structure di erent from silica glass. Raman and Pair Distribution Function analyses suggested a structure like cristobalite, a silica polymorph well-known for its auxetic behavior, i.e., having a negative Poisson ratio. This elastic parameter pre-eminently controls the friction coe cient of the material and, if it is negative, the Cof lowering. As a result, the increase in low crystallinity cristobalite is su cientto explain the lowering of the quartz friction coe cient up to values able to contribute, in principle, to the triggering processes of active faults. This allows hypothesizing a slip induction mechanism that does not include the need to have the interposition of layers of hydrated silica, as invoked by many authors, to justify the low friction coe cients that are achieved in shear stress tests on rocks abundant in quartz.

    Description: HPC world is increasing incredibly fast.We can build more resolute and accurate models. Unfortunately,Big Data management pops up when trying to evaluate them.We set up a Python module that does automated assessment of a set of observations,extraction and aggregation in time of ocean model time,running evaluation methods. For the first time execution,we used ocean physics variables and CMEMS reprocessed moorings historical data,two model data from the RITMARE and from CMEMS. The results are promising,because we can process an historical or real time evaluation and it is portable,the evaluation results provides more reliable skill scores.

    Description: Since 1938, Nyamulagira volcano (Democratic Republic of Congo) has operated as a classic pressurized basaltic closed system, characterized by frequent dike-fed flank eruptions. However, on June 24, 2014, an active lava lake was observed in its summit, after a period of 76 years. The small lava lake is now exposed at the bottom of a pit-crater and is rising and growing. Based on satellite-derived infrared (IR) data, SO2 fluxes and periodic field surveys, we provide evidence that the development of the lava lake was gradual and occurred more than 2 years before it was first observed in the field. Notably, this process followed the voluminous 2011–2012 distal flank eruption and was coeval with weakening of the central rock column below the summit. Hence, the opening and development of the pit-crater favoured the continuous rise of fresh magma through the central conduit and promoted the gradual “re-birth” of the Nyamulagira lava lake. Budgeted volumes of magma erupted, and magma degassed at depth indicate that the formation of the lava lake is due to the draining and refilling of a shallow plumbing system (1–2 km depth), probably in response to the rift-parallel 2011–2012 distal eruption. We thus suggest that the transition from lateral to central activity did not result from a substantial change in the magma supply rate but, more likely, from the perturbation of the plumbing system (and related stress field) associated with the distal eruption. The processes observed at Nyamulagira are not unique and suggest that rift-fissure eruptions, in addition to triggering caldera collapses or lava lake drainages, may also induce a progressive resumption of central vent activity. Current activity at Nyamulagira represents a tangible and major hazard for the population living at the base of its southern flank.

    Description: In a recent work we computed the relative frequencies with which strong shocks (4.0≤Mw〈5.0), widely felt by the population were followed in the same area by potentially destructive main shocks (Mw≥5.0) in Italy. Assuming the stationarity of the seismic release properties, such frequencies can be tentatively used to estimate the probabilities of potentially destructive shocks after the occurrence of future strong shocks. This allows us to set up an alarm-based forecasting hypothesis related to strong foreshocks occurrence. Such hypothesis is tested retrospectively on the data of a homogenized seismic catalogue of the Italian area against a purely random hypothesis that simply forecasts the target main shocks proportionally to the space-time fraction occupied by the alarms. We compute the latter fraction in two ways a) as the ratio between the average time covered by the alarms in each area and the total duration of the forecasting experiment (60 years) and b) as the same ratio but weighted by the past frequency of occurrence of earthquakes in each area. In both cases the overall retrospective performance of our forecasting algorithm is definitely better than the random case. Considering an alarm duration of three months, the algorithm retrospectively forecasts more than 70% of all shocks with Mw5.5 occurred in Italy from 1960 to 2019 with a total space-time fraction covered by the alarms of the order of 2%. Considering the same space-time coverage, the algorithm is also able to retrospectively forecasts more than 40% of the first main shocks with Mw5.5 of the seismic sequences occurred in the same time interval. Given the good reliability of our results, the forecasting algorithm is set and ready to be tested also prospectively, in parallel to other ongoing procedures operating on the Italian territory.

    Description: The origin and patterns of groundwater salinity of a shallow coastal aquifer pertaining to a reclaimed subsiding zone of the Po Delta are examined in this study. The aim is to identify the source of the hypersaline groundwater residing in the basal portion of the aquifer and to infer the mechanism of salinization of the remaining portion of the aquifer. To disentangle the possible sources of salinity the molar ratio of environmental tracers like Cl− and Br− were used in combination with the classical geochemical analyses of major and minor cations ratios. High-resolution multi-level sampling (MLS) allowed obtaining a robust and self-consistent hydrogeochemical database, which was statistically analysed via factor analysis and proved to be log-normally distributed. Thus, a common origin could be inferred for the elevated salinity that characterize most of the groundwater samples, this can be recognized in the organic rich fine-grained sediments, deposited in salty back barrier and marsh environments during the last transgression phase. This study proves that a detailed analysis of groundwater geochemistry can be considered a valuable tool to assess the origin of salinity in coastal Holocene aquifers, where the traditional conceptual model of a simple fresh/seawater interface may not be adequate.

    Description: This paper outlines the construction of a White Paper on Geoethics in Forensic Geology. It focuses on forensic geology, although it also relates to the wider sphere of the forensic geosciences. Forensic geology is rapidly evolving to provide assistance in police investigations and in criminal and civil courts with providing scientific advice and evidence, but there also should be associated clear guidelines to benefit both the practitioner and the justice system. Examples of where forensic geology delivers to society in a vital way is required and also where potential malpractice could happen. The paper discusses where forensic geology should pursue social justice in compliance with current legal systems. In order to achieve this goal, it outlines the main areas that we suggest should be developed within the discipline: the competence of the scientist in forensic geology; creation of best practice guidelines; establishing clear duties of the expert in forensic geology; consideration of ethical aspects in forensic geological activities and ethical aspects in communicating geoscience evidence. When developing geoethics within forensic geology, the following practices were identified as of prime importance: improved standardisation of methods; the use of appropriate methods and/or combination of complementary methods; greater clarity of approach used for the location of areas of interest; collection and recovery of evidence; scene examination and sample collection evaluation of data; construction and appropriate use of databases, background information, documentation, cartography and communicating forensic data; summarising evidence and acknowledgement and consideration of uncertainty and bias. Honesty, integrity, respect, transparency, competence, and reliability are vital for the forensic geoscientist to adhere to. Raising the ethical profile of the forensic geoscience profession aims to pave the way to ensure that forensic geoscientists are empowered now and into the future for serving society: acting responsibly and adopting effective ethical codes is vitally important for a safe society. This paper highlights the necessity to hold urgent discussions on the ethical and social implications of forensic geology and their potential repercussions on societal justice. Forensic geology is a very useful tool, but like any other tool in human hands, it presupposes responsibility in its application. Professionalism and honesty in forensic geology are fundamental to assure the public that geoscientists involved have the highest scientific respectability, social credibility, and community respect for their role to help pursue judicial truth. The aim of this draft White Paper is to stimulate an open and informed debate on geoethics.

    Description: In February 2016, 47 ingots were found in the seabed of Contrada Bulala (Gela, CL, Italy) near the site where 40 ingots had previously been recovered. The ingots composition was determined to be a Cu - Zn alloy, dated by the archaeologist to the VI century B.C. This specific alloy was then known as Orichalcum. From an archaeological point of view, the first question raised about the new discovery was whether the ingots of the first and the second excavations belonged to the same shipwreck. Following the previous study, an elemental analysis was performed on the ingots from the second finding by using ICP-OS and ICP-MS techniques. The chemometric treatment of the analytical results obtained on both sets, i.e. ingots from first and second discovery, confirms their similarity. Therefore, the two findings can be considered to belong to the same naval load. The lead isotopic ratios were determined on selected/representative ingots to improve the knowledge about this treasure. Results can provide information about probable location of the lead sources, that could be very useful for the reconstruction of the ancient trade routes in the Mediterranean Sea.

    Description: In the last years, because of uncontrolled human activities, a significant increase of groundwater pollution occurred worldwide, with nitrate being among the most widespread pollutants. The assessment of groundwater vulnerability represents an important tool for developing groundwater quality plans and in the delimitation of “Nitrate Vulnerable Zones”. In this study, three rating methods (DRASTIC, SINTACS and GOD) were applied in an alluvial plain to check the reliability of the results comparing the obtained thematic maps with the observed nitrate concentrations in groundwater. Results show that without large modifications for specific vulnerability, these methodologies cannot describe the actual groundwater nitrate distribution in the study area. A new easy methodology called Protection from Natural and Anthropogenic sources (PNA) was then defined and tested. The PNA map divides the study area in five classes of vulnerability from very low to very high and shows a fair correlation with groundwater nitrate concentrations. The selection of the parameters and of the algorithm makes PNA strongly flexible and applicable in similar watersheds around the world, as a tool for the delineation of “Nitrate Vulnerable Zones”.

    Description: Shallow aquifers are the most accessible reservoirs of potable groundwater; nevertheless, they are also prone to various sources of pollution and it is usually difficult to distinguish between human and natural sources at the watershed scale. The area chosen for this study (the Campania Plain) is characterized by high spatial heterogeneities both in geochemical features and in hydraulic properties. Groundwater mineralization is driven by many processes such as, geothermal activity, weathering of volcanic products and intense human activities. In such a landscape, multivariate statistical analysis has been used to differentiate among the main hydrochemical processes occurring in the area, using three different approaches of factor analysis: (i) major elements, (ii) trace elements, (iii) both major and trace elements. The elaboration of the factor analysis approaches has revealed seven distinct hydrogeochemical processes: i) Salinization (Cl-, Na+); ii) Carbonate rocks dissolution; iii) Anthropogenic inputs (NO3-, SO42-, U, V); iv) Reducing conditions (Fe2+, Mn2+); v) Heavy metals contamination (Cr and Ni); vi) Geothermal fluids influence (Li+); and vii) Volcanic products contribution (As, Rb). Results from this study highlight the need to separately apply factor analysis when a large data set of trace elements is available. In fact, the impact of geothermal fluids in the shallow aquifer was identified from the application of the factor analysis using only trace elements. This study also reveals that the factor analysis of major and trace elements can differentiate between anthropogenic and geogenic sources of pollution in intensively exploited aquifers.
