Notizen: Summary We studied the build-up and turnover of microbial biomass following the addition of farmyard manure to an unmanured soil and to soils from a long-term experiment in which different levels of farmyard manure had been applied for the last 23 years. The application of farmyard manure at 15–90 t ha-1 to previously unmanured soil increased the microbial biomass during the first 3 months of incubation but a gradual decline occurred with further incubation for up to 12 months. Microbial biomass C was positively correlated with soil organic C and ranged from 1.8% to 2.2% of organic C after 12 months of farmyard manure applications. Biomass turnover increased with the application of farmyard manure, ranging from 0.81 to 0.87 year-1 with various levels of manure. Amendment of soils from the long-term manure experiment with various levels of farmyard manure led to a build-up and decline in biomass C as seen in the unmanured soils, but biomass C was higher in all treatments compared to the corresponding unmanured soil treatments. Biomass turnover was greater compared to the unmanured soil treatments and it decreased with increasing levels of farmyard manure. The average soil respiratory activity increased with increasing levels of farmyard manure, but respiratory activity per unit of biomass C decreased with increasing levels of manure. Enzyme activities were greater in long-term manured soils compared to unmanured soils amended with various levels of manure. There was a significant correlation between biomass C and enzyme activities.

Notizen: Summary We investigated the effects of pitch pine seedling roots on extractable N, microbial growth rate, biomass C and N, and nematodes and microarthropods in microcosms with either organic (41% C, 1.14% N) or mineral (0.05% C, 0.01% N) horizon soils of a spondosol. Root quantity was manipulated by varying plant density (0, 1, 2, or 4 seedlings) and rhizosphere soil was separated from non-rhizosphere soil by a 1.2 μm mesh fabric. In the rhizosphere of organic soil horizons, moisture, microbial growth rate, biomass C and N, and extractable N declined as root density was increased, but there was little effect on nematodes or microarthropods. High levels of extractable N remained after 5 months, suggesting that N mineralization was stimulated during the incubation. In the rhizosphere of mineral soil horizons, microbial growth rate, and nematode and microarthropod abundances increased at higher root density, and in the absence of roots faunal abundance approached zero. Faunal activity was concentrated in the rhizosphere compared to non-rhizosphere soil. In organic soil horizons, roots may limit microbial activity by reducing soil moisture and/or N availability. However, in mineral soil horizons, where nutrient levels are very low, root inputs can stimulate microbial growth and faunal abundance by providing important substrates for microbial growth. Our results demonstrate a rhizosphere effect for soil fauna in the mineral soil, and thus extends the rhizosphere concept to components of the soil community other than microbes for forest ecosystems. Although our results need to be verified by field manipulations, we suggest that the effects of pine roots on nutrient cycling processes in coniferous forests can vary with soil nutrient content and, therefore, position in the soil profile.

Notizen: Abstract Since the amount, intensity, and frequency of rainfall in desert regions vary strongly over space and time, the response by soil biota to this variability is of great importance. We conducted a study in the Negev desert in order to examine the immediate response by the soil nematode populations and the microbial biomass to varying amounts of water applied in a single pulse. Soil samples from the 0–10-cm depth were collected from areas undergoing four different wetting treatments, comprising 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm of water, and from a non-irrigated control soil. There was a correlation between diurnal variations in nematode populations and the diurnal fluctuations in soil moisture. The greatest abundance of nematodes was found in the soil treated with 20 mm water (970 individuals 100 g-1 dry soil) which was 2, 4, 5, and 14 times larger than that found in the soil treated with 15, 10, 5, and 0 mm of water, respectively. Bacterialfeeding and fungal-feeding nematodes accounted for approximately 95% of the total nematode population found in all treatments. The microbial biomass examined in the current study exhibited an immediate response to the wetting which was greater in soil treated with, 10, 15, and 20 mm of water compared with 0 and 5 mm. However, after 4 days (96 hours) the microbial biomass stabilized again at the basic level of the 0-mm control. However, our results indicated that the major trigger for changes in the nematode populations, and in the microbial biomass, was diurnal fluctuations in soil moisture, since peaks in nematode populations and in the microbial biomass were observed at various times of the day.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of fertilizer N on the mineralization of atrazine [2-chloro-4(ethylamino)-6(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) in soils was assessed in microcosms using radiometric techniques. N equivalent to 0, 250, and 500 kg N as NH4NO3 ha-1 was added to three grassland soils. Compared to the control, the 250- and 500-kg treatments suppressed mineralization of atrazine by 75 and 54%, respectively, and inhibited mineralization of 2,4-D by 89 and 30%, respectively. Active fungal biomass responded to the N treatments in an opposite manner to herbicide mineralization. Compared to the control, the 250- and 500-kg treatments increased the active fungal biomass by more than 300 and 30%, respectively. These results agree with other observations that N can suppress the decomposition of resistant compounds but stimulate the primary growth of fungi. The degree of suppression was not related to the amount of N added nor to the inherent soil N levels before treatment. The interaction between the N additions and the active fungal biomass in affecting herbicide mineralization suggests that N may alter microbial processes and their use of C sources and thus influence rates of herbicide degradation in the field.

Notizen: Abstract We studied the recovery of ATP from soil. A soil-water suspension was prepared by two different methods (simple stirring or ballottini mill treatment) at different pH levels and in the presence of different chemicals [Na2SO4, Na3PO4, Na5P3O10, adenosine, ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA), TRIS]. The ATP recovery was evaluated by adding [3H]-8′ ATP to the solution and comparing the values obtained by radioactivity measurements with those obtained by an enzymatic assay. Strongly acidic (pH lower than 1.0) or alkaline (pH 10.0) extractions yielded the best ATP recoveries compared with intermediate pH values. At pH 10.0, the addition of Na3PO4 or Na5P3O10 gave a high level of ATP recovery, 68 and 96%, respectively. No ATP hydrolysis occurred under alkaline extraction conditions. Under acidic extraction conditions, the addition of adenosine, EDTA, Na2SO4, or Na5P3O10 improved ATP recovery but it was never higher than 34%. The results were discussed in terms of the effects of different physical and chemical conditions on cell disruption, ATP stability, ATP interactions with soil components, and ATP solubilization.

Notizen: Abstract We examined the long-term effects of cattle slurry, applied at high rates, on microbial biomass, respiration, the microbial quotient (qCO2) and various soil enzyme activities. In March, June, July, and October 1991, slurry-amended grassland soils (0–10 cm) contained significantly higher levels of microbial biomass, N mineralization and enzyme activities involved in N, P, and C cycling. With microbial biomass as the relative value, the results revealed that the slurry treatment influenced enzyme production by the microbial biomass. High levels of urease activity were the result not only of a larger microbial biomass, but also of higher levels of enzmye production by this microbial biomass. The ratio of alkaline phosphatase and xylanase to microbial biomass was nearly constant in the different treatments. The metabolic quotient (qCO2) declined with increased levels of slurry application. Therefore it appears that microorganisms in slurry-amended soils require less C and energy if there is no competition for nutrients. The results of this study suggest that urease activity, nitrification, and respiration (metabolic quotient) can be used as indicators of environmental stress, produced by heavy applications of cattle slurry.

Notizen: Abstract Four treatments (control, chemical fertilizer, wheat straw, and wheat straw+fertilizer) were established on the dryland experimental farm of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. Organic in C in the different treatments ranged from 0.69 to 0.93%, total N from 0.08 to 0.11%, and total P from 0.018 to 0.021. The application of straw significantly increased the soil water-holding capacity. The maximum effect on the microbial biomass was realized with the straw+fertilizer treatment, followed by straw and then by the fertilizer treatment. During the study microbial biomass C ranged from 144 to 491 μg g-1 dry soil, biomass N from 14.6 to 50.1 μg g-1, and biomass P from 7.2 to 17.6 μg g-1 soil. Microbial biomass C, N and P represented 3.2–4.6% of total C, 2.6–3.8% of total N, and 5.8–8.2% of total P in the soil, respectively, in all cases the highest proportion occurred in the straw+fertilizer treatment and the lowest in the control. Microbial biomass C, N, and P were positively correlated with each other. Microbial biomass C and N increased by 77% in straw+fertilizer-treated plots relative to the control. The increase in microbial biomass P in the straw+fertilizer treatment over the control was 81%. The increase in the microbial biomass is expected to enhance nutrient availability in the soil, as the microbial biomass acts both as a sink and a source of plant nutrients.

Notizen: Abstract We investigated the effects of converting forest to savanna and plough land on the microbial biomass in tropical soils of India. Conversion of the forest led to a significant reduction in soil organic C (40–46%), total N (47–53%), and microbial biomass C (52–58%) in the savanna and the plough land. Among forest, savanna, and plough land, basal soil respiration was maximum in the forest, but the microbial metabolic quotient (qCO2 was estimated to be at a minimum in the forest and at a maximum in the plough land.

Notizen: Abstract Effects of vegetation and nutrient availability on potentail denitrification rates were studied in two volcanic, alluvial-terrace soils in lowland Costa Rica that differ greatly in weathering stage and thus in availability of P and base cations. Potential denitrification rates were significantly higher in plots where vegetation had been left undisturbed than in plots where all vegetation had been removed continuously, and were higher on the less fertile of the two soils. The potential denitrification rates were correlated strongly with respiration rates, levels of mineralizable N, microbial biomass, and moisture content, and moderately well with concentrations of extractable NH inf4 sup+ , Kjeldahl N, and total C. In all plots, denitrification rates were stimulated by the removal of O2 and by the addition of glucose but not by the addition of water or NO inf3 sup- .

Notizen: Numerical results of the simulations of the saturated clay response to a line heat source with a constant power output are presented and compared to the analytical solutions. Mixture theory of two interacting thermoelastic constituents is employed for the modelling. In this theory, mass transfer between the adsorbed water and bulk water is included to simulate the degeneration of adsorbed water into bulk water occurring at elevated temperatures. A finite difference method with non-uniform mesh is adopted to determine both the near- and far-field behaviour. The degeneration of adsorbed water into bulk water is more pronounced close to the heat source. This may produce a lower excess pore water pressure, a higher permeability increase, and accelerate the water flow in the vicinity of the heat source.

Notizen: The effect of homogeneous sand lenses on the groundwater flow in an otherwise homogeneous clayey deposit is examined by performing Monte Carlo simulations using a finite element flow model. In the simulations, the locations of the sand lenses are assumed to be mutually independent. The paper examines the effect on the flow field in a clayey deposit of (a) different percentages of sand lenses, (b) different hydraulic conductivities of the sand lenses, (c) different average sand lens sizes, (d) non-uniformity of the sizes of the sand lenses, and (e) localization of the sand lenses. The effect of these non-uniform flow fields on contaminant migration is then examined using a finite element contaminant transport model. For the range of cases considered it is shown that: the volume of sand lenses present has a greater influence than the shape, size, location and hydraulic conductivity of the sand lenses; simplified calculations performed using the geometric and harmonic means of hydraulic conductivity bracket the behaviour evident from more complex analyses; and the maximum impact on an aquifer separated from a waste disposal facility by a deposit containing sand lenses can be modelled to sufficient accuracy, using quite simple flow and contaminant transport models.

Notizen: The present paper examines the axisymmetric problem related to the loading of a rigid circular anchor plate which is embedded in bonded contact with an isotropic elastic half-space. A Hankel transform development of the governing equations is used to reduce the associated mixed boundary value problem to a set of coupled Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. These equatons are solved in a numerical fashion to generate results of engineering interest. In particular, the results indicate the influence of the depth of embedment on the axial stiffness of the rigid anchor plate.

Notizen: A two-dimensional boundary integral method to analyse the flow of contaminant in fractured media having a two- or three-dimensional orthogonal fracture network is presented. The method assumes that the fractures provide the paths of least resistance for transport of contaminants while the matrix, because of its low permeability, acts as ‘storage blocks’ into which the contaminant diffuses. Laplace transform is used to eliminate the time variable in the governing equation in order to facilitate the formulation of a boundary integral equation in the Laplace transform space. Conventional boundary element techniques are applied to solve for the contaminant concentrations at specified locations in the spatial domain. The concentration in the time domain is then obtained by using an efficient inversion technique developed by Talbot. The method is able to analyse the behaviour of waste repositories which have diminishing concentration due to the mass transport of the contaminant into the surrounding fractured media.

Notizen: A finite element approach is presented to determine the bearing capacity of shallow footings on silica sand deposits. The approach can take into account the effects of relative density and stress level on the shear strength of granular soil and is applicable to a fairly large effective stress range. The strength of sand is characterized by a non-linear Mohr-Coulomb criterion which depends on maximum and critical friction angles, widely used parameters in engineering practice. The results of analysis indicate that this approach yields reliable predictions of bearing capacity and, in particular, it can model the volumetric behaviour of the soil at failure.

Notizen: A piled raft foundation comprises both piles and a pile cap that itself transmits load directly to the ground. The aim of such a foundation is to reduce the number of piles compared with a more conventional piled foundation where the bearing effect of the pile cap, or raft, is ignored. This paper describes a ‘hybrid’ approach for the analysis of piled raft foundations, based on a load transfer treatment of individual piles, together with elastic interaction between different piles and with the raft. The numerical analysis is used to evaluate a simple approximate method of estimating the overall response of the foundation from the response of the component parts. The method leads to estimates of the overall foundation stiffness, the proportion of load carried by the pile group and the raft, and an initial assessment of differential settlements. Parametric studies are presented showing the effect of factors such as raft stiffness and pile spacing, length and stiffness, and a worked example is included demonstrating the accuracy of the approximate design approach.

Notizen: Settlement of the surrounding soil due to surcharge placement may give rise to negative skin friction developed in piles. In this paper, a simple discrete element approach using subgrade reaction method is proposed to analyse negative skin friction on single piles. The pile is embedded in a two-layer soil where the upper soil layer undergoes consolidation while the lower soil layer acts as a stiffer bearing stratum. Two different and uncoupled deformation modes, one at the pile shaft and the other at the pile toe have been assumed in the determination of the soil stiffness. The effects of a compressible bearing stratum and embedment length of the pile in the bearing stratum are considered in the analysis. This simple approach is verified by comparison with rigorous methods of modelling the soil as an elastic continuum. Three reported case histories are analysed and the computed results are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the field measurements.

Notizen: Mathematical modelling of the ascent of free fluid through relatively strong rock, deep in the Earth's mantle, presents a challenge in geomechanics. Here the medium is considered as fluid-saturated, porous, elastic and bounded, and the fluid enters at a point source. An explicit finite difference method is developed for the numerical solution to the problem of the dilatation of a fluid-saturated porous elastic sphere due to a point fluid source of constant strength at the centre of the sphere. A cubic spline interpolant is used to evaluate a definite integral which occurs in the boundary condition for the pore fluid pressure at the surface of the sphere. The numerical solutions for the dilatation and pore fluid pressure are compared with analytical solutions and the absolute and relative errors of the numerical solutions are calculated. When the fluid source is switched on, the pore fluid pressure starts to decrease, reaches a minimum value and then steadily increases. The initial time rate of decrease of the pore fluid pressure is independent of the radial distance from the source. It decreases as the radius of the sphere increases and vanishes for a point fluid source in an infinite porous elastic medium.

Notizen: An equivalent homogeneous continuum theory is developed for modelling discretely drained soil stratum. The model accounts for the local horizontal flow to discrete vertical drains such as wick or sand or stone columns as well as direct vertical drainage of the soil and global horizontal flow due to non-uniform horizontal conditions. Calibration curves for the model are presented for the case of no soil smear due to the drain installation and for the case when smear exists. The model is implemented in both analytical and finite element analyses for those cases where no well resistance is present and when it is of importance. The accuracy and applicability of the model is demonstrated for simple one- and two- layered problems including smear and well resistance.

Notizen: The current state of art for limit equilibrium analysis of slope stability problems lacks a satisfactory procedure for stability evaluation under general, rapid (undrained) loading conditions. Some procedures are available for the analysis of rapid drawdown, but these suffer from several shortcomings and, furthermore, are not applicable to other types of rapid loading. An approach is presented which overcomes these limitations. The approach integrates four components-establishment of soil behaviour on the basis of laboratory testing, estimation of steady-state conditions in the slope using a boundary value analysis, estimation of distribution of undrained strength in the slope using undrained stress paths, and identification of the critical slip surface followed by calculation of its factor of safety. The approach is illustrated through its application to the stability analysis of an earth dam under rapid drawdown and earthquake conditions.

Notizen: A numerical model for wave scattering problems due to P and SV wave incidences is outlined in this paper. After verifying the present model, a general parametric study on the displacement patterns along the canyons of different shapes due to P and SV wave incidences is also performed. In order to investigate the effects of geologic conditions on ground motions, a weathered V-shaped canyon, which has different elastic moduli in the weathered layer, is also considered herein. The numerical results from this investigation demonstrated that (1) the present model is very suitable to simulate the problem of P and SV wave scattering along a natural canyon; (2) the shape of a canyon may have important effects on the displacement patterns along the canyon, so that a rectangular canyon is not appropriate to be a dam site due to its high amplification effects on incident waves; (3) the weathered layer on the surface of a canyon will significantly amplify the free field motion, especially for the case of softer weathered layer. Therefore, the excavation or grouting on a dam or a bridge abutment is not only necessary for static stability under static loads, but also beneficial to earthquake resistance because less amplification can be expected for sound rock abutments.

Notizen: We derive a simple approximation for the steady-state distribution of solute subject to an arbitrary, irreversible transformation in a soil profile under the condition of steady fluid flow. The approximation accounts for the effect of dispersion in both the surface boundary condition and the transport equation. The accuracy of the approximation is determined explicitly for the cases of zero- and first-order kinetics, where exact solutions are available. Data from a numerical scheme are used to check the approximation's accuracy for the widely used Michaelis-Menten kinetic rate. It is shown that existing approximations in which the effect of dispersion in the transport equation is ignored can affect significantly the value determined for the Michaelis-Menten saturation constant. Parameters found when the new method is applied to experimental data are found to agree closely with those estimated directly from a least-squares fitting.

Notizen: In this paper, a time-dependent infinite element which can be used to simulate transient seepage problems in infinite media is presented. The hydraulic head distribution function of the element has been derived in detail and the property matrices of the element have been well formulated. Since both space and time variables are used in the course of constructing the hydraulic head distribution function of the element, the present infinite element can be referred to as a transient one. Using the present infinite element to model the far field of a system, the mechanism of transient seepage problems in infinite media can be rigorously simulated because the property matrices of the element are evaluated at any time of interest in the analysis. Since explicit expressions can be written for the property matrices of the infinite element, they may be evaluated quite easily and this can be carried out by writing a simple subroutine in a computer program. In order to examine the accuracy and efficiency of the present infinite element, both a one-dimensional (ID) transient seepage problem in a semi-infinite medium and a 2D transient seepage problem in a full plane have been solved using the finite and infinite element technique. It has been demonstrated that the present infinite element is very useful for the numerical simulation of transient seepage problems in infinite media.

Notizen: This article presents a numerical model of heat and fluid flow in compacting sedimentary basins formulated in Lagrangian co-ordinates. The Lagrangian co-ordinates are the sediment particle positions of the completely compacted basin. A finite element formulation of excess water pressure and temperature in these Lagrangian co-ordinates is presented, in addition to an equivalent formulation in the real co-ordinates. The later formulation is also Lagrangian of nature, since the elements of the grid in the real co-ordinates always frame the same sediment particles. In other words, it is the Lagrangian grid mapped to the real space. This is done in an iterative loop which solves for excess water pressure, and then updates the real co-ordinates of the sediment particles. By comparing the two finite element formulations it is concluded that the one in real space is the simplest, most efficient and most precise. The model is validated by comparison with two dimensionless one-dimensional solutions, one analytical for the linear case, and one numerical for the non-linear case. Both these one-dimensional solutions are obtained on the unit interval, where the moving top boundary caused by continuous sedimentation is incorporated.

Notizen: Numerical and analytical modelling studies were conducted for the analysis of groundwater flow and contaminant transport at the Innisfil landfill site in the Town of Innisfil, County of Simcoe, in Ontario, Canada. Previously conducted field studies categorized the upper stratigraphy at the site into three units: upper sand unit, upper silt/clay unit and Intermediate Sand unit. Essentially horizontal groundwater movement in the two sand units and vertical downward flow in the silt/clay unit were reported by the field hydrogeologists. In the following, application of three computer models (FLOWPATH, USGS MOC and POLLUTE) for the simulation of the groundwater flow and contaminant transport processes at the Innisfil landfill site is described. The paper focuses on the calibration of groundwater flow and contaminant transport systems, and demonstrates how the insight gained during the contaminant transport calibration was used to improve the initial groundwater flow characterization of the hydrogeological system.

Notizen: A set of mapping functions in the form of convergent series for an infinite element, which is capable to include the infinitely distanced constant head boundary condition from the area of disturbance (e.g. pumping), is proposed based on the asymptotic far-field behaviour of typical seepage flow problems. The derived mapping functions have been successfully used in three-dimensional point symmetric, two-dimensional axi-symmetric and one-dimensional unidirectional flow for the fixed head boundary at infinite distance. The result shows excellent agreement with analytical solution. For the first time, the mapping function of an infinite element is presented in the form of a convergent series. The infinite elements are really capable of reducing the cost and efficiency of conventional finite element analysis. Finally, a figure is also proposed to indicate the required size of the near field to obtain accurate drawdown at specified locations based on some calculations for two-dimensional radial flow case.

Notizen: It is becoming increasingly important, from an environmental viewpoint, to minimize vibrations induced in urban dwellings by blasting. The present study illustrates how the delay interval between blastholes can be chosen to control and minimize the vibration energy within the structural response band of most houses. In particular, it is shown that the only possibility of reducing such energy is to employ a delay interval in the range 10-35 ms. However, the induced vibrations are also dependent upon the accuracy of the delay initiators as well as the level of random fluctuations between each blasthole signature. It is shown that only very accurate electronic delays give the possibility of utilizing fully the delay sequence in order to control structural vibrations. If the vibration emission from each blasthole is totally uncorrelated with that of any other blasthole then the resulting amplitude spectrum of the blast will be totally unpredictable. This situation occurs irrespective of the delay initiation sequence or its accuracy. Under these conditions it is impossible to predict the blast-induced energy lying within the structural response band.

Notizen: Elastic-plastic deformations in pavements consisting of layers of different frictional materials are investigated. The upper bound, kinematic shakedown theorem is used to obtain estimates of the critical shakedown loads. Fully general three-dimensional deformations are considered. The influence of the loading distribution, interactions between loads, and the effect of varying the thickness, stiffness and strength of the layers are explored. Consequences of this investigation for particular existing designs of flexible pavements are investigated. In particular, it is found that the strength of the subgrade has no effect on the magnitude of the critical shakedown load.

Notizen: This paper presents a non-equilibrium sorption dispersion-advection transport model for the analysis of pollutant migration through soil. The formulation involves a convolution integral of the product of the rate of change of concentration and a time-dependent sorption coefficient, suggesting an integral transformation of the governing equations. This facilitates the primary purpose of this paper, to incorporate a time-dependent solute sorption process into a computationally efficient and accurate semi-analytic Laplace transform method. An application of the non-equilibrium sorption model for backfiguring dispersion-advection equation parameters from experimental data is presented, and the implications of non-equilibrium sorption on the design of landfill liners is explored by means of an illustrative example.

Notizen: Estimation of the drivability of piles requires modelling of the hammer impact in order to provide the input force wave at the pile head. Historically, this has been achieved through a numerical model of the hammer components (ram, cushion and anvil), which is then linked with that of the pile in order to effect the drivability analysis. This paper presents an analytical model of hammer impact, based on lumped ram and anvil masses separated by a cushion with internal damping, and connected to the pile which is modelled as a dashpot. Force-time responses derived from the analytical model are compared with actual field data, and also with results from commercially available numerical models of hammer impact. The analytical model is then used to explore the characteristics of hammer impact, with particular attention to combinations of parameters that lead to hammer bounce and, hence, significant loss of energy transferred to the pile.

Notizen: In pavement evaluation using non-destructive testing (NDT), a large amount of deflection bowls are analysed in terms of the elastic moduli of the layers. The results are used to evaluate the material variability, which could serve in an overlay design procedure based on the concept of reliability. The model currently used for interpreting deflection bowls is based on the random variable theory which neglects the spatial distribution of the elastic modulus of the material. Since the subgrade and pavement materials have a spatial distribution, the analysis of NDT could lead to an underestimate of the material variability. The random field theory, which is more adequate than the random variable theory, is presented and used to correct the NDT analysis. The pavement is modelled as a multilayer random elastic medium with, for each layer, a constant Poisson's ratio and a random shear modulus characterized by three statistical moments: average value, standard deviation and autocorrelation function. The stochastic integral formulation presented in the previous publications is generalized here for a multilayer system. The multilayer system is analysed with the random field theory and the covariance matrix of the deflection bowl is obtained and used to generate deflection bowls corresponding to the properties of the random field. These bowls are then interpreted with the current procedure and elastic modulus variabilities are computed. It is found that the current procedure for interpreting deflection bowls underestimates the variability of the subgrade, by a factor of 0.4-1.0. It is interesting to note that the average moduli of the Boussinesq layer and of the two layers are not affected by the type of theory used. The variability of the upper layer in the two-layer system is also unaffected for a small variation range.

Notizen: This paper considers the transient response of a pressurized long cylindrical cavity in an infinite poroelastic medium. To obtain transient solutions, Biot's equations for poroelastodynamics are specialized for this problem. A set of exact general solutions for radial displacement, stresses, pore pressure and discharge are derived in the Laplace transform space by using analytical techniques. Solutions are presented for three different types of prescribed transient radial pressures acting on the surface of a permeable as well as an impermeable cavity surface. Time domain solutions are obtained by inverting Laplace domain solutions using a reliable numerical scheme. A detailed parametric study is presented to illustrate the influence of poroelastic material parameters and hydraulic boundary conditions on the response of the medium. Comparisons are also presented with the corresponding ideal elastic solutions to portray the poroelastic effects. It is noted that the maximum radial displacement and hoop stress at the cavity surface are substantially higher than the classical static solutions and differ considerably from the transient elastic solutions. Time histories and radial variations of displacement, hoop stress, pore pressure and fluid discharge corresponding to a cavity in two representative poroelastic materials are also presented.

Notizen: A mathematical framework for the description of localized deformation, as outlined in Reference 14, is reviewed. The formulation is derived by estimating the average mechanical properties of a medium intercepted by a shear band. The mechanical response of the homogenized system depends on the properties of the constituents and the respective volume fractions, it remains invariant however with respect to the thickness of the shear band. The implementation of the framework in the context of finite element analysis is discussed. Numerical examples, pertaining to some geotechnical problems, are provided.

Notizen: The paper presents a simple approximate analytical solution of the remote stresses that cause the collapse of a borehole or other circular cylindrical cavity in an infinite elastic space. Regions of parallel equidistant splitting cracks are assumed to form on the sides of the cavity. Their boundary is assumed to be an ellipse of a growing horizontal axis, the other axis remaining equal to the borehole diameter. The slabs of rock between the splitting cracks are assumed to buckle as slender columns, and their post-critical stress is considered as the residual stress in the cracked rock. The buckling of these slab columns is assumed to be resisted not only by their elastic bending stiffness but also shear stresses produced on rough crack faces by relative shear displacements. The energy release from the infinite medium caused by the growth of the elliptical cracking region is evaluated according to Eschelby's theorem. This release is set equal to the energy dissipated by the formation of all the splitting cracks, which is calculated under the assumption of constant fracture energy. This yields the collapse stress as a function of the elastic moduli, fracture energy, ratio of the remote principal stresses, crack shear resistance characteristic and borehole diameter. The collapse stress as a function of crack spacing is found to have a minimum, and the correct crack spacing is determined from this minimum. For small enough diameters, the crack spacing increases as the (4/5)-power of the borehole diameter, while for large enough diameters a constant spacing is approached. In contrast to plastic solutions, the breakout stress exhibits a size effect, such that for small enough diameters the breakout stress decreases as the (- 2/5)-power of the borehole diameter, while for large enough diameters a constant limiting value is approached. Finally, some numerical estimates are given and the validity of various simplifying assumptions made is discussed.

Notizen: Aquifer contamination by organic chemicals in subsurface flow through soils due to leaking underground storage tanks filled with organic fluids is an important groundwater pollution problem. The problem involves transport of a chemical pollutant through soils via flow of three immiscible fluid phases: namely air, water and an organic fluid. In this paper, assuming the air phase is under constant atmospheric pressure, the flow field is described by two coupled equations for the water and the organic fluid flow taking interphase mass transfer into account. The transport equations for the contaminant in all the three phases are derived and assuming partition equilibrium coefficients, a single convective - dispersive mass transport equation is obtained. A finite element formulation corresponding to the coupled differential equations governing flow and mass transport in the three fluid phase porous medium system with constant air phase pressure is presented. Relevant constitutive relationships for fluid conductivities and saturations as function of fluid pressures lead to non-linear material coefficients in the formulation. A general time-integration scheme and iteration by a modified Picard method to handle the non-linear properties are used to solve the resulting finite element equations. Laboratory tests were conducted on a soil column initially saturated with water and displaced by p-cymene (a benzene-derivative hydrocarbon) under constant pressure. The same experimental procedure is simulated by the finite element programme to observe the numerical model behaviour and compare the results with those obtained in the tests. The numerical data agreed well with the observed outflow data, and thus validating the formulation. A hypothetical field case involving leakage of organic fluid in a buried underground storage tank and the subsequent transport of an organic compound (benzene) is analysed and the nature of the plume spread is discussed.

Notizen: A numerical simulation is presented for three-dimensional three-phase fluid flow in a deforming saturated oil reservoir. The mathematical formulation describes a fully coupled governing equation systen which consists of the equilibrium and continuity equations for three immiscible fluids flowing in a porous medium. An elastoplastic soil model, based on a Mohr-Coulomb yield surface, is used. The finite element method is applied to obtain simultaneous solutions to the governing equations where displacement and fluid pressures are the primary unknowns. The final discretized equations are solved by a direct solver using fully implicit procedures. The developed model is used to investigate the problems of three-phase fluid flow in a deforming saturated oil reservoir.

Notizen: The discrete element method (DEM) models granular materials numerically as a collection of particles rather than as a continuum. Difficulties can arise when using the more common circular and polygonal shapes for modelling real granular materials. In particular, use of discs and spheres leads to typically low aggregate internal friction angles compared with real materials. This paper presents the detailed formulations for using the ellipse shape in discrete element modelling. Robust algorithms for computing ellipse-ellipse and ellipse-wall intersections are presented. Also shown are equations to assist in parameter selection and evaluation of macroscopic stresses and strains from the contact data. An initial validation test suite on rods of varying particle aspect ratio are presented. These results indicate that the ellipse-based DEM results in mechanical behaviour that is similar, both qualitatively and quantitavely, to the behaviour of real soils.

Notizen: We present solutions for the effective stress induced by gas flow through a porous solid into a borehole resulting from sudden pressure reduction. Tensile effective stress that exceeds the strength of the solid will lead to borehole failure. This has applications to the intentional creation of cavities, relevant to the efficient recovery of coalbed methane, and the avoidance of borehole stability problems in conventional gas production.

Notizen: Traditionally, sedimentation and self-weight consolidation have been viewed as physically distinct processes requiring separate treatment. Relatively recently, Pane and Schiffman1 and also Philip and Smiles2 have suggested that the two processes may be described by a single partial differential equation, essentially that of Gibson et al.3 The former suggests a modification of Terzaghi's effective stress principle while the paper by Philip and Smiles suggests that a suitable modelling of material properties is sufficient. We have adopted the latter approach by allowing for the compressibility of the material in question to change abruptly from finite values to infinity in the so-called transition region which delineates that portion of space where effective stress is zero from that where effective stress in non-zero. This procedure gives rise to serious difficulties when trying to solve the governing partial differential equation numerically. These difficulties are circumvented by using a relatively new numerical technique known as the Moving Finite Element (MFE) method. The MFE method is especially effective in solving problems having solutions that characteristically exhibit shock-like structure. The modelling of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation from a single governing model is an ideal candidate for MFE due to the abrupt, almost discontinuous change in void ratio displayed in the transition region.

Notizen: The results of a numerical simulation of the observed field-drying behaviour of an unsaturated clay are described. In particular, the simulation of soil drying during the summer of 1983 is addressed.Richards' pressure-based unsaturated flow formulation is adopted. Transient numerical solutions are achieved by making use of the finite element method coupled with a finite difference timestepping scheme. The application of the algorithm to the simulation of the problem in hand is described. The initial moisture content distribution represents saturated conditions as indicated by field-measured data. Boundary conditions are determined from an interpretation of meteorological data. A simple method of representing plant root extraction of soil moisture is proposed.Comparisons of numerical results with field-measured data collected by British Gas are presented. Good correlation is obtained. The numerical simulation is shown to be capable of representing the observed field-drying behaviour. The complexity of modelling soil drying, as opposed to infiltration, is clearly illustrated by the work presented.

Notizen: A finite element model is developed for modelling coupled fluid expulsion/deformation behaviour of dewatering sediments subjected to external loadings under isothermal conditions. The non-linear deformation behaviour of the sediment (soil) skeleton is based on the force equilibrium equation in which the constitutive relationship of stress and strain is implemented by the modified Cam-Clay model in soil plasticity. The fluid flow behaviour in the model is described by the generalized porous media flow equation. The model allows temporal and spatial variations of porosity and permeability. The fluid viscosity and density are assumed to be temperature-dependent. The model also allows the development of single and multiple faults, depending upon the material (sediment and fluid) properties, loading and boundary conditions.Procedures are implemented for (1) updating the material properties such as porosity, permeability, fluid density and viscosity and (2) the development of faults which allow the formation of high-permeability conduits for fluid flow. The solution algorithm for displacements of the sediments and the excess pore (fluid) pressure is based on a residual load technique to handle the non-linear (elastic-plastic) deformation behaviour of the sediment skeleton. The model can be applied to one- and two-dimensional problems. Examples of a plane strain saturated sediment layer subjected to stepwise horizontal tractions versus time are given.

Notizen: A semi-analytical solution procedure is developed to predict damage evolution at the interface between two dissimilar geologic materials. The procedure consists of an analytical field solution within each finite element, and a numerical scheme for simulating structural responses. For static problems, an incrementaliterative solution strategy is constructed through the use of an initial elasticity stiffness matrix, and an evolving-localization constraint in terms of a suitable measure of damage at the most severely damaged element. For simplicity, one-dimensional problems are considered to illustrate the features of the proposed procedure, and future research is discussed based on the preliminary results obtained.

Notizen: The equations governing the elastic-plastic deformation of granular materials are typically hyperbolic, or contain small-magnitude damping or rate effects. A finite element algorithm is the standard method for the numerical integration of these systems. In particular, finite elements allow great flexibility in the design of grid geometry. However, modern finite difference methods for hyperbolic systems have been successful in aerodynamics computations, resolving wave structures more sharply than finite element schemes. In this paper we develop a finite difference scheme for granular flow problems. We report on a second-order Godunov-type scheme for the integration of hyperbolic equations for the elastoplastic deformation of a simple model of granular flow. The Godunov method includes a characteristic tracing step in the integration, providing minimal wave dispersion, and a slope limiting step, preventing unphysical oscillations. The granular flow model we consider is hyperbolic, but hyperbolicity is lost at a large value of accumulated plastic strain. This loss of hyperbolicity is a tell-tale signal for the formation of a shear band within the sample. Typically, when systems lose hyperbolicity a regularization mechanism is added to the model equations in order to maintain the well posedness of the system. These regularizations include viscosity, viscoplasticity, higher-order gradient effects or stress coupling. Here we appeal to a very different kind of regularization. When the system loses hyperbolicity and a shear band forms, we treat the band as an internal boundary, and impose jump conditions at this boundary. Away from the band, the system remains hyperbolic and the integration step proceeds as usual.

Notizen: This paper presents the results of a research programme conducted on the geotechnical centrifuge at The University of Western Australia to investigate coupled heat and contaminant transport in the soil surrounding a buried waste source. The phenomena which govern heat and contaminant transport through porous media are discussed, the principles of geotechnical centrifuge modelling are outlined, and relevant scaling laws that govern the relationship between a centrifuge model and the prototype, with respect to the problem of coupled waste transport, are presented. A model test, simulating two-dimensional migration from a buried heat and contaminant source, is described, and the results from four model tests are presented. The experimental data show that hydraulic instability is responsible for the transport of contaminant in the soil around the source and that the mode of instability is determined by the magnitude of the effective Rayleigh number.

Notizen: Waves reflecting obliquely from structures establish short-crested waves which are conducive to scour of the bed adjacent to them. The pore pressures and effective stresses induced by this wave system are derived analytically for an unsaturated, anisotropic soil matrix of infinite depth in a three-dimensional domain. Verification is available by the solutions being readily reduced to the two-dimensional cases of the progressive and standing wave, for which some closed-form solutions are available. It is shown that wave obliquity is coupled with soil permeability. The effects of wave obliquity, relative water depth, soil stiffness and soil permeability on wave-induced pore pressure are discussed in detail.

Notizen: An iterative method is presented for solving a fully coupled and implicit formulation of fluid flow in a porous medium. The mathematical model describes a set of fully coupled three-phase flow of compressible and immiscible fluids in a saturated oil reservoir. The finite element method is applied to obtain the simultaneous solution (SS) for the resulting highly non-linear partial differential equations where fluid pressures are the primary unknowns. The final discretized equations are solved iteratively by using a fully implicit numerical scheme. Several examples, illustrating the use of the present model, are described. The increased stability achieved with this scheme has permitted the use of larger time steps with smaller material balance errors.

Notizen: This paper critically examines the use of the modified Cam clay stress-strain model in predicting the thermomechanical behaviour of soft clays. The equations governing the thermomechanical behaviour of a saturated soil are summarized and their methods of solution are briefly discussed. The observed thermomechanical soil behaviour reported in the literature has been compared with the predictions made using the modified Cam clay model. In making these comparisons, two extensions of the well-known modified Cam clay model have been considered: one proposed by Britto et al.1 in which heating induces thermal stresses and strains in the soil but has no direct effect on the work hardening, and the other proposed by Hueckel and Borsetto2 in which a change in temperature also affects the yield surface. The comparisons are confined to the behaviour of normally and lightly overconsolidated clays, where the modified Cam clay is known to perform well. Apart from the effect of a single heating-cooling loop, cyclic behaviour is not considered. It is concluded that both models provide reasonable predictions under isotropic stress conditions. Although exhaustive comparisons have not been made for deviatoric stress excursions (because of the lack of experimental data), it appears from preliminary studies that neither model performs particularly well for this form of loading.

Notizen: One of the important factors that lead to errors in settlement predicitions is the degree of precision in obtaining the soil parameters. Most mathematical methods for reliability modelling offered to date in the area of geomechanics are based on the classical probabilistic approach, in which soil properties are treated as random variables. In this paper, a model based on the theory of fuzzy sets is presented to take account of the uncertainty in the soil behaviour. This proposed method considers the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio as two fuzzy numbers in the elastic matrix. An example is given to show the possibility distributions of the displacements and the stresses at some locations in the soil medium. By means of a fuzzy inference scheme, the total possibility distributions or total membership functions of the finite element results may be obtained by considering the estimated error resulting from the mesh discretization.

Notizen: Summary The influence of surface growth of inoculated cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) on subsurface properties of a brown earth, silt loam soil was studied in reconstituted flooded soil columns. One blue-green algae species, Nostoc muscorum, become dominant within the first 7 days of inoculation. In light control columns (not inoculated) a bryophyte, Barbula recurvirostra, was dominant although significant growth of indigenous blue-green algae occurred. The blue-green algae counts were in the range of 1×106 g-1 dry soil in the surface layer (0–0.7 cm) in both columns. Any effect of surface phototrophic growth on soil properties was restricted to the surface layer. In inoculated columns there was a twofold increase in microbial biomass and an eightfold increase in bacterial numbers by week 13. However, bacterial numbers declined so that there was only a 2.8-fold increase by week 21. Dehydrogenase (x2.1), urease (x2.8) and phosphatase (x3.1) activities and polysaccharides (+69%) increased by week 21 as a result of the blue-green algae inoculation along with a significant improvement in soil aggregation. However, similar increases occurred in the light control columns, indicating that given appropriate conditions of light and moisture indigenous species may be ultimately as effective as introduced species in bringing about biochemical and microbiological changes to soil.

Notizen: Summary Soil moisture, temperature, microbial substrate-induced respiration and basal respiration were monitored in two plots in an agricultural field from April 30 to September 25, 1987, and in a further two plots from May 26 to August 27, 1988. An attempt to relate biological variables to microclimatic variables was made through the use of correlation analysis. The microbial substrate-induced and basal respiration were both strongly positively correlated with the soil moisture content, and to a lesser extent positively related to soil temperature, especially when partial correlation was used to control for variation in soil moisture. Short-term changes in substrate-induced and basal respiration were correlated with changes in soil moisture but were largely independent of soil temperature. The ratio of basal to substrate-induced respiration (indicating the respiration: biomass ratio and therefore ecosystem stability or persistence) was negatively associated with the soil moisture content and in some instances with soil temperature when partial correlation analysis (correcting for soil moisture variation) was used. This suggests that the climatic conditions which contributed to the lowest ecosystem stability were low temperature, low moisture conditions.

Notizen: Summary Every second month for 2 years a beech forest floor was treated with pentachlorophenol and 2,4,5-trichorophenoxyacetic acid each in two concentrations. The microbial biomass and its respiration activity in the three litter horizons were measured during this time and during a recovery period of 2 years after the treatment was stopped. The microbial biomass, mainly fungi, was decreased dose-responsively, as was the respiration rate. The doubling time of the fungal biomass was estimated to be about 50–100 days in the F horizon, and considering the natural decreases and recovery times observed, it is suggested, following Domsch et al. (1983), that a biomass decrease of 75%–93.75% is tolerable, a decrease of less than 75% is negligible, and a decrease of over 93.75% is critical.

Notizen: Summary The development of a microbial community on cellulose (cellophane film and filter paper) buried in waterlogged soil was observed under a microscope. Throughout the decomposition of the cellulose, the biomass, immobilized N, ATP and gas metabolism of the microbial community were examined. As cellulose decomposition progressed, a microbial succession was recognized. This succession was divided into two stages. In the first stage, a few types of cellulolytic microorganisms predominated on the cellulose. Vigorous decomposition of the cellulose was accompanied by a rapid increase in microbial biomass, and H2 was evolved from the microbial community on the cellulose. In the second stage, the rate of cellulose decomposition was slow. The cellulose remaining was thickly covered with various types of microoganisms. The H2 produced was consumed by the microorganisms closely adhering to the remaining cellulose. In addition, non-cellular organic N accumulated on the remaining cellulose. A large part of the microorganisms seemed to be dormant in this stage. The trends in this microbial succession were similar to those found in ecosystem successions.

Notizen: Summary The development of a number of components was analysed in an agro-ecosystem study with four cropping regimens, barley without and with N fertilization, grass ley, and lucerne. A great variation in N inputs (1–39 g N m-2 year-1) and cropping systems produced a variation in primary production (260–790 g C m-2 year-1) and input of organic material to the soil (150–270 g C m-2 year-1). This was reflected in variations of total soil animal biomass (1.6–5.1 g C m-2) and in variations in the abundance of various animal groups, nematodes (5.6–9.8×106m-2), micro- (2.6–4.8×10-4 m-2), and macroarthropods (0.9–4.2×103 m-2). In contrast, total bacteria, fungi, flagellates, and amoebae varied quite independently of the organic matter input. Mineralization processes covaried more with C and N inputs and total animal biomass than with microbial biomass. it is suggested that the rather constant microbial biomass was a result of an adjustment in the grazing pressure of microbial-feeding animals to the level of microbial production.

Notizen: Summary The impact of protozoan grazing on the dynamics and mineralization of 14C- and 15N-labelled soil organic material was investigated in a microcosm experiment. Sterilized soil was planted with wheat and either inoculated with bacteria alone or with bacteria and protozoa or with bacteria and a 1:10 diluted protozoan inoculum. 14C−CO2 formation was continuously monitored. It served as an indicator of microbial activity and the respiration of soil organic C. The activity of protozoa increased the turnover of 14C-labelled substrates compared to soil without protozoa. The accumulated 14C−CO2 evolved from the soils with protozoa was 36% and 53% higher for a 1:10 and for a 1:1 protozoan inoculum, respectively. Protozoa reduced the number of bacteria by a factor of 2. In the presence of protozoa, N uptake by plants increased by 9% and 17% for a 1:10 and a 1:1 protozoan inoculum, respectively. Both plant dry matter production and shoot: root ratios were higher in the presence of protozoa. The constant ratio of 15N: 14+15N in the plants for all treatments indicated that in the presence of protozoa more soil organic matter was mineralized. Bacteria and protozoa responded very rapidly to the addition of water to the microcosms. The rewetting response in terms of the 14C−CO2 respiration rate was significantly higher for 1 day in the absence and for 2 days in the presence of protozoa after the microcosms had been watered. It was concluded that protozoa improved the mineralization of N from soil organic matter by stimulating the turnover of bacterial biomass. Pulsed events like the addition of water seem to have a significant impact on the dynamics of food-chain reactions in soil in terms of C and N mineralization.

Notizen: Summary Changes in the content of C, N, P, and S in the soil biomass and in phosphatase, urease, protease, deaminase, and arylsulphatase activity, induced by amendment with municipal solid-waste compost, were determined in a clay loam soil during 1 year of incubation at 25° and 35°C. In the unenriched soil (control) decreasing trends in biomass C, biomass N, and biomass S were observed at both temperatures. In the enriched soil, these values increased, reaching a maximum after 1 month. Biomass P, probably due to a slower process of P immobilization, showed different trends. Alkaline phosphomonoesterase, phosphodiesterase, and deaminase activity remained constant after reaching maximum values (3–5 months). Arylsulphatase, urease, and protease activity tended to return to baseline after reaching a maximum (2–3 months). Atrazine, though applied at a dose that was 10 times higher than the recommended field rate, did not modify the chemical and biochemical properties of either the control or the enriched soil. Significant positive and negative correlations between changes in biomass values and changes in enzyme activity were found. The negative correlations are attributed to the delay in the enzymatic response compared with the changes in microbial biomass.

Notizen: This paper presents an analytical solution of the permeability alteration problem around the wellbore. This alteration may be a permeability reduction due to drilling fluid invasion or mudcake formation around the wellbore. On the other hand, the alteration may be a permeability increase resulting from stimulation by acidizing the formation matrix around the well. This permeability discontinuity in a reservoir forms a composite reservoir system. With the composite model, both the degree and the radial extent of permeability alteration can be adequately predicted. The conventional skin concept is inadequate and physically unrealistic in most of these cases. This paper describes the application of an automatic weighted constrained least-squares parameter estimation technique and the analytical model for pressure transient analysis. The parameters of the composite reservoir system are determined from a match of the pressure transient data. The behaviour of the pressure transient in such composite systems is presented using the analytical solution.

Notizen: A probabilistic model for stability analysis of a deepwater gravity-based platform foundation is defined, based on theory for wave loading in conjunction with conventional slip surface considerations. The model accounts for uncertainties in loading as well as in soil properties, and model uncertainties are also considered. The model is updated through in-service measurements of some of the governing variables, and measurement uncertainties are included. The practical application of the model is illustrated by presentation of calculations for a typical foundation. Probability calculations are performed by first-order reliability methods.

Notizen: The propagation characteristics of dispersive SV/P surface waves are analytically studied in a linear-elastic, isotropic, compressible half-space with constant mass density and Poisson's ratio and shear modulus increasing according to a continuous, bounded function of depth. Dispersion relations for the particular wave modes are evaluated over wide ranges of the parameters involved. Displacement profiles are presented for typical values of these parameters. Finally, an equivalent depth is given for use in connection with steady-state vibration techniques for site investigation.

Notizen: The displacement formulation of the finite element method is well suited to the analysis of elasto-plasticity problems involving compressible material behaviour, but it is well known that numerical difficulties occur when the material is incompressible or nearly incompressible. The effect of these additional constraints depends on both element formulation and mesh topology. A two-dimensional plane strain finite element formulation suitable for the solution of problems involving large strains and displacements (but small rotations) based on the isoparametric approach is described. The kinematics of deformation are defined in terms of the Eulerian strain rates that are invariably used in small strain analysis; the formulation therefore retains some of the character of small strain theory but includes additional geometrically non-linear terms. The results of a series of plane strain finite element analyses of two cylindrical expansion problems are presented. These results confirm the previously observed trend that as Poisson's ratio approaches 0·5 then the quality of the calculated stress deteriorates. The study also indicates that the solution quality depends increasingly on mesh topology as perfect incompressibility is reached.
