Notes: Summary An investigation of the downward transport of a solute following a series of alternating irrigation/rainfall and evapotranspiration events is carried out. The principle of conservation of mass, and the concepts of partition chromatography are used in constructing a simple model which enables the peak solute concentration depth to be calculated at any particular time given the rainfall and evapotranspiration history. Prediction of the theory is compared with published data on solute transport.

Notes: Abstract Previous analytical simplifications of Boltzmann's similarity solution are unified and generalized by examining symmetry and transformation properties of the equation. It is shown how to reduce boundary value problems to initial value problems for certain diffusivities. A series solution is derived for this case, and shown to be accurate for a broad range of parameter values.

Notes: Summary A first integral of the diffusion equation exists for similarity solutions when the diffusivity obeys a power or exponential law. Structure of the solutions in both cases and connection to an optimization result are discussed for an arbitrary diffusivity.

Notes: Summary A general theory of vertical solute movement in a soil is presented, which takes into account uptake of water and solute by roots, irrigation or rainfall, and solute application and adsorption by the soil. Irrigation, rainfall, and the surface application of fertilizers are arbitrary functions of time. The main limitation of the theory is the neglect of the variability of soil-water conductivity with position. The theory is illustrated by comparing predictions and experimental observations of solute leaching losses measured in a lysimeter.

Notes: Abstract Cross-shore interactions between the ocean and a coastal aquifer have been studied extensively, whereas the corresponding along-shore case has seldom been examined. This paper presents a numerical model that simulates two-dimensional groundwater flow averaged over the thickness of a coastal aquifer. The model is used to examine the essential features of tide-induced, along-shore effects on an aquifer adjacent to a cross-shore river. The results show that the tide, which fluctuates the water level in the river, induces groundwater table fluctuations and oscillating flows in the along-shore direction. This occurs even at locations much further inland than tidal cross-shore fluctuations can propagate. However, the magnitude of along-shore water table fluctuations and flow velocity at a given cross-shore distance decreases with the distance from the river in the same manner as cross-shore tidal fluctuations. The along-shore groundwater flow, together with the cross-shore flow, forms horizontal circulation and increases mixing of solute in the aquifer. Over a tidal period, a large amount of water exchange occurs at the river-aquifer and ocean-aquifer interfaces, leading to increased transfer of chemicals between the three water bodies. These results have implications for the management of waste discharge in estuaries and coastal aquifers.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of a wetting front with an impervious surface can be described very easily in the early stages of interaction by using a superposition principle. After the time when the superposition principle fails to describe the interaction properly, two flow regimes are analysed. For most of the interaction the profile is only affected by the impervious surface near that surface and in particular the inflow into the soil layer is unchanged. Then, only at the very end of the process is the inflow decreasing because of the impervious surface.
