Notes: Summary Polyaniline and polyalkylaniline perchlorates were prepared by oxidative coupling polymerization of anilines by the use of copper(II) perchlorate in acetonitrile as an oxidant. The corresponding polymer bases obtained by treating the perchlorates with alkaline solution were soluble in dimethylsulfoxide and partly soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The molecular weights of the THF-soluble components were 2000–6000. The charge transport of the perchlorates is influenced by the chain length and the steric effect of alkyl substituents.

Notes: Abstract Addition of the l-proline analogue l-azetidine 2-carboxylic acid to growing cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus promoted fast deactivation of the general aminoacid permease, measured as l-valine uptake, without an immediate decrease in the growth rate. Cells preincubated with the analogue for 3 h were unable to restore either growth ability or general aminoacid permease activity in analogue-free medium. Eadie-Hofstee plots of l-valine uptake in the presence of the analogue are consistent with a strong reduction in the number of active molecules of the general amino-acid permease located in the plasma membrane. Inhibitory effects on protein synthesis were seen after preincubations of the yeast with the analogue for 3 h although a 30 min preincubation had no effect.

Notes: Abstract Nitrite uptake is made up of two components in Azotobacter chroococcum, a passive diffusion, presumably of nitrous acid, and an active transport of nitrite which uses the nitrate transport system. Only the active component is under regulatory control.

Notes: Abstract Microwave surface resistance measurement constitutes one of the most advantageous procedures for the investigation and characterization of the new superconducting oxides. Keeping in mind that the bulk ceramic materials usually have cylindrical symmetry, a new automatic measuring system, based on a resonant cavity, has been developed with special emphasis on superconducting pellets. The resolution capability of our system is pointed out by measuring the surface resistance of YBCO and BSCCO samples.

Notes: Abstract The time dependence of the field-cooled susceptibility in polycrystalline samples of YBa2Cu3O7 has been studied in the temperature range 77–95 K. Field-cooled and zero-field-cooled susceptibility measurements and its variation with the ac magnetic field are also reported. Measurements have been carried out by means of an inductive technique. Our fully automatic system allows us to measure the first data points of field-cooled susceptibility versus time from the beginning of the magnetic relaxation just after removing the field.

Notes: Summary In this paper we formualte a master equation approach describing a D+T thermonuclear plasma in a lumped phase space. From the first moments of this master equation and performing the pass to the continuous limit the evolution equations for the expected phase space ion densities emerge. Also we have obtained the evolution equations of the equal time correlation and covariance functions. Finally we have deduced the hydrodynamic equations that arise from a master equation approach.

Notes: Electron paramagnetic resonance studies performed at room temperature in Mn2+ doped Cs2NaLaCl6 single crystals (elpasolite type) showed that the Mn2+ ion occupies two different tetragonal symmetry sites in a cubic crystalline lattice. Both sites possess principal Z-axes along 〈100〉 crystallographic directions with large splittings (≈1.0 cm−1 and ≈0.8 cm−1) of the spectra. Several facts are taken into account in order to establish tentative models for the structural configuration of the two sites.

Notes: In this short note we describe a novel method, based upon the Kirkwood equation, for doing free energy simulations in asymmetric molecular systems typical of those encountered with supercritical fluid mixtures involving large organic species solvated in a lighter supercritical gas. The rationale behind this modified Kirkwood approach has been to develop simulation procedures that are both accurate and stable, by minimizing the perturbation to the system that is implicit to all perturbation-based simulation methods. A good example of an algorithm in this latter class of methods is the free energy perturbation method (FEP) which has been used in this work for comparative purposes with our proposed technique which we refer to as the modified Kirkwood coupling method (MKC). The MKC approach described here effectively makes the perturbation process in the simulation process vanishingly small and appears to result in a stable, accurate algorithm for free energy calculations in chemical mixtures. Numerical results supporting these conclusions are provided in two Lennard-Jones model systems at supercritical conditions.

Notes: Time effects associated with domain-wall stabilization processes are investigated at temperatures ranging from 80 to 420 K, for yttrium iron garnet polycrystalline samples sintered in different atmospheres. A very different behavior for samples sintered in high and low oxygen partial pressures is found. Above 0.1 atm the isochronal relaxation spectra show a peak around 180 K that could be associated with an electron diffusion controlled domain-wall relaxation. The activation energy for the process is close to 0.4 eV. Below this pressure, the spectra show both positive and negative peaks as a result of the competition between disaccommodation and accommodation processes. These peaks are closely temperature spaced in the neighborhood of 130 K, and the relaxation mechanism responsible for this behavior is not yet clear.

Notes: The incorporation of Nd3+ in CaF2 layers grown on Si and GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy is studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results are in qualitative agreement with those obtained on CaF2:Nd homoepitaxial layers. A lower emission intensity (∼70%) at λ=1.0475 μm is attributed to residual stress and crystalline defects. Concentration quenching of photoluminescence appears at concentrations higher than 3.6 wt % Nd. The use of (Ca,Sr)F2 for lattice matching to GaAs leads to a significant inhomogeneous broadening of Nd3+ emissions due to disorder in the cationic sublattice.
