    Description: We have produced a draft sequence of the rice genome for the most widely cultivated subspecies in China, Oryza sativa L. ssp. indica, by whole-genome shotgun sequencing. The genome was 466 megabases in size, with an estimated 46,022 to 55,615 genes. Functional coverage in the assembled sequences was 92.0%. About 42.2% of the genome was in exact 20-nucleotide oligomer repeats, and most of the transposons were in the intergenic regions between genes. Although 80.6% of predicted Arabidopsis thaliana genes had a homolog in rice, only 49.4% of predicted rice genes had a homolog in A. thaliana.     Description: We show that sex steroids protect the adult murine skeleton through a mechanism that is distinct from that used to preserve the mass and function of reproductive organs. The classical genotropic actions of sex steroid receptors are dispensable for their bone protective effects, but essential for their effects on reproductive tissues. A synthetic ligand (4-estren-3alpha,17beta-diol) that reproduces the nongenotropic effects of sex steroids, without affecting classical transcription, increases bone mass and strength in ovariectomized females above the level of the estrogen-replete state and is at least as effective as dihydrotestosterone in orchidectomized males, without affecting reproductive organs.     Description: We present experimental evidence, obtained from small-angle neutron scattering and photon correlation measurements, indicating the existence of two types of structurally arrested (glassy) states in a copolymer micellar system with a short-range interparticle attractive interaction. Within a certain range of micellar volume fractions, a sharp transition between these two types of glass is observed by varying the temperature. Furthermore, we found an end point of this transition line beyond which the two glasses become identical in their local structure and their long-time dynamics.     Description: We describe a group of alloys that exhibit "super" properties, such as ultralow elastic modulus, ultrahigh strength, super elasticity, and super plasticity, at room temperature and that show Elinvar and Invar behavior. These "super" properties are attributable to a dislocation-free plastic deformation mechanism. In cold-worked alloys, this mechanism forms elastic strain fields of hierarchical structure that range in size from the nanometer scale to several tens of micrometers.     Notes: The expected behavior of the dose dependence of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal has been studied using numerical simulation. A simple model of one trapping state and one kind of recombination center is presented, and the sequence of sets of simultaneous differential equations governing the processes during excitation, relaxation, and light exposure are numerically solved. With the choice of reasonable trapping and recombination parameters, it has been shown that a quadratic dose dependence of this effect results from the model when the irradiation stage starts with empty trapping states. This may explain reports in the literature of an initial supralinear dose dependence of OSL. It is also shown that within the same model, one can get an initial linear dose dependence of OSL if one starts with partly filled traps. Also has been studied the influence of dose rate on the measured OSL signal for a constant total dose, and some effect has been seen for a certain dose-rate range. The similarities and dissimilarities of OSL as compared to thermoluminescence with respect to these phenomena are discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The ability of plant organs to use gravity as a guide for growth, named gravitropism, has been recognized for over two centuries. This growth response to the environment contributes significantly to the upward growth of shoots and the downward growth of roots commonly observed throughout the plant kingdom. Root gravitropism has received a great deal of attention because there is a physical separation between the primary site for gravity sensing, located in the root cap, and the site of differential growth response, located in the elongation zones (EZs). Hence, this system allows identification and characterization of different phases of gravitropism, including gravity perception, signal transduction, signal transmission, and curvature response. Recent studies support some aspects of an old model for gravity sensing, which postulates that root-cap columellar amyloplasts constitute the susceptors for gravity perception. Such studies have also allowed the identification of several molecules that appear to function as second messengers in gravity signal transduction and of potential signal transducers. Auxin has been implicated as a probable component of the signal that carries the gravitropic information between the gravity-sensing cap and the gravity-responding EZs. This has allowed the identification and characterization of important molecular processes underlying auxin transport and response in plants. New molecular models can be elaborated to explain how the gravity signal transduction pathway might regulate the polarity of auxin transport in roots. Further studies are required to test these models, as well as to study the molecular mechanisms underlying a poorly characterized phase of gravitropism that is independent of an auxin gradient.

    Notes: Abstract The morphological development of oxide scale on hot-rolled steel strip under various simulated coiling and cooling conditions was investigated. Oxide-scale structures developed were classified into several categories, and the conditions under which each category formed were identified and mapped. It was found that oxide scale formed under normal coiling and cooling conditions had a structure that was difficult to pickle. Increased cooling rate after coiling, or coiling at a temperature below 350°C, improved this structure. The conditions under which a magnetite layer at the wüstite–steel interface was formed during continuous cooling were also identified and the mechanisms of its formation discussed.
