    Notes: Abstract Metal clusters arranged on nanostructured oxidized silicon wafers are presented as new model catalyst systems. A photoresist layer spun on top of a wafer was patterned by laser interference exposure. The grid obtained after removing the exposed parts of the resist is used as an etching mask. Hollows with diameters of 300 nm and depths between 50 and 60 nm were etched into the oxide layer using wet chemical methods. Two methods were applied to deposit metal clusters (Pd or Cu) in a defined way within the hollows. The particles ranged from 10 to 50 nm in height and from 80 to 200 nm in diameter. The model catalyst systems were characterized by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The method presented here allows us to produce 4 inch wafers that are covered completely by nanometer-sized structures in a reasonable period of time.

    Notes: Abstract Changes of the V2O5/Al3O3 catalyst aged for up to 10 years under real conditions of the selective catalytic reduction of NO x by ammonia (SCR) at the tail gases of the nitric acid plant were characterized by51V NMR spectroscopy, porosimetry, temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and catalytic activity measurements. The catalytic activity and the redox properties of the catalyst were found intact. Only small variations of the ratio of the octahedral and tetrahedral vanadia species were documented by51V NMR on aged catalyst.

    Notes: Abstract The nonlinear equations of motion for an incompressible simple fluid, occupying a fixed bounded container, are formulated on the basis of the “finitelinear” viscoelasticity theory for materials with fading memory; this formal boundary-initial value problem is then viewed as a nonlinear abstract evolution equation on a certain Hilbert space. It is shown that a linearized version of this evolution equation is associated with a linear dynamical system on this Hilbert space, and several results for stability and asymptotic behavior for this linearized problem are proved through the use of Liapunov stability methods. On the assumption that the original nonlinear evolution equation also is associated with some dynamical system on the same space, it is shown that the rest condition of the fluid is stable and all motions are bounded. The Liapunov function employed for this purpose can be interpreted as a mechanical energy function for the fluid.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Menge der Kostenparameter, für die eine optimale Lösung des dynamischen Losgrößenmodells optimal bleibt wird hier Stabilitätsregion genannt. Die Größe einer solchen Menge kann als Maß der Robustheit einer Lösung angesehen werden. Es ist zu erwarten, daß die Stabilitätsregionen mit wachsendem Zeithorizont schrumpfen und daß sie in diesem Sinne monoton sind. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden verschiedene hinreichende Bedingungen für diese Monotonie untersucht. Die Bedingungen setzen unter anderem die Existenz von Planungs- und Vorhersage-Horizonten voraus und verallgemeinern so Ergebnisse einer früheren Arbeit, in der Aussagen für gewöhnliche Planungs-Horizonte vorgestellt wurden.
    Notes: Abstract The set of cost inputs for which an optimal solution of the dynamic lot size model remains valid is called stability region. The size of this region may be viewed as a measure of robustness of a solution. It is an expectation that the stability regions shrink with growing time horizons and that they are monotonous in this sense. In the present paper several sufficient conditions implying monotonicity will be studied. The conditions cover the existence of planning and forecast horizons and generalize the results of a previous paper in wich monotonicity results were presented for the case of ordinary planning horizons.

    Notes: Abstract The stability of chemical species in solution during storage is one of the critical aspect that has to be carefully studied e.g. for calibration purposes or prior to the organization of interlaboratory studies using synthetic solutions. The Measurements and Testing Programme (formerly BCR) is currently undertaking projects to improve the quality of speciation analysis for a variety of species (e.g. As, Hg, Sn, Pb, Cr). In all the cases the stability of these species was carefully studied in the solutions provided to the participants. This paper gives an overview of some of the results obtained in different BCR-projects on speciation analysis.

    Notes: Abstract Sizeable data bases are now being routinely generated in a variety of contexts in chemical industry. Statistical investigations of such data bases are aimed both at initially uncovering structure and eventually proposing models, in particular for predicting product quality by the mix or characteristics of the chemical compounds. “Online Multivariate Exploratory Graphical Analysis” (OMEGA) stands for a structured exploratory study of the relationships in a multivariate data set, where, rather than testing for one specific property, as many clues as possible for interesting structures are searched for by different dimension reductions and succeeding interactive graphical analyses. The stability of the projections obtained by the different dimension reduction methods is assessed by simulation producing graphical displays particularly supporting the identification of influential points. The variation of the predictions obtained by the different dimension reduction methods is assessed by cross-validation delivering misclassification rates or cross-validated R2 values. The interpretation of the new coordinates corresponding to dimension reduction is supported by loading simplifications and graphical displays for judging its adequacy. The OMEGA strategy has been found to be an effective tool for routine searching for structure.

    Notes: Abstract The formation of complexes between Mo(VI) and 8-hydroxy-quinoline (oxine) and four oxine derivatives were investigated by multiwavelength molecular absorption spectrometry, potentiometry, and polarography. The following pKOH- and pKNH- values of the ligands and logK 211-values of the complexes MoO2(OH)2L x− (x=1 or 2) were obtained at 25° C and an ionic strength of 1M(NaClO4): 5,7-dinitro8-hydroxyquinoline 4.59, 〈0, 14.50; 7-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid 5.34, 0.41, 15.70; 7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid 6.98, 2.62, 17.65; 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid 8.33, 4.13, 18.71; and 8-hydroxyquinoline 9.62, 5.28, 19.69. A good linearity was found between logK 211 and the sum of the pK-values of the OH- and NH+-groups. The dependence of the peak current of Mo(VI)-determinations by adsorption polarography of the 7-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonate complex of Mo(VI) MoO(OH)3L− can quantitatively be described at pH 0.8–2 using the corresponding pK-values and the log K311 of 18.54±0.03, determined by polarography.

    Notes: Abstract We consider a pair consisting of an optimization problem and its optimality function (P,θ), and define consistency of approximating problem-optimality function pairs, (P N ,θ N ) to (P,θ), in terms of the epigraphical convergence of the P N to P, and the hypographical convergence of the optimality functionsθ N toΛ. We then show that standard discretization techniques decompose semi-infinite optimization and optimal control problems into families of finite dimensional problems, which, together with associated optimality functions, are consistent discretizations to the original problems. We then present two types of techniques for using consistent approximations in obtaining an approximate solution of the original problems. The first is a “filter” type technique, similar to that used in conjunction with penalty functions, the second one is an adaptive discretization technique that can be viewed as an implementation of a conceptual algorithm for solving the original problems.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the algebraic aspects of the classification of pseudofree, locally linear group actions on a simply connected 4-manifold, particularly with the splitting and stability properties of the associated Hermitian intersection module and its isometry group. Our main result is the proof of stability of the equivariant intersection form for a large class of pseudofree actions. We also prove a topological rigidity theorem stating that two locally linear, pseudofree actions on a closed, oriented, simply connected 4-manifold, with the equivariant intersection forms indefinite and of rank at least 3 at each irreducible character, are topologically conjugate by an orientation preserving homeomorphism if and only if their oriented local representations at the corresponding fixed points are linearly equivalent.

    Notes: Summary After a review of the existing state of affairs, an improvement is made in the stability theory for solitary-wave solutions of evolution equations of Korteweg-de Vries-type modelling the propagation of small-amplitude long waves. It is shown that the bulk of the solution emerging from initial data that is a small perturbation of an exact solitary wave travels at a speed close to that of the unperturbed solitary wave. This not unexpected result lends credibility to the presumption that the solution emanating from a perturbed solitary wave consists mainly of a nearby solitary wave. The result makes use of the existing stability theory together with certain small refinements, coupled with a new expression for the speed of propagation of the disturbance. The idea behind our result is also shown to be effective in the context of one-dimensional regularized long-wave equations and multidimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

    Notes: Summary A relative equilibrium of a Hamiltonian system with symmetry is a point of phase space giving an evolution which is a one-parameter orbit of the action of the symmetry group of the system. The evolutions of sufficiently small perturbations of a formally stable relative equilibrium are arbitrarily confined to that relative equilibrium's orbit under the isotropy subgroup of its momentum. However, interesting evolution along that orbit, here called drift, does occur. In this article, linearizations of relative equilibria are used to construct a first order perturbation theory explaining drift, and also to determine when the set of relative equilibria near a given relative equilibrium is a smooth symplectic submanifold of phase space.

    Notes: Summary In this paper we rigorously show the existence and smoothness inε of traveling wave solutions to a periodic Korteweg-deVries equation with a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-type perturbation for sufficiently small values of the perturbation parameterε. The shape and the spectral transforms of these traveling waves are calculated perturbatively to first order. A linear stability theory using squared eigenfunction bases related to the spectral theory of the KdV equation is proposed and carried out numerically. Finally, the inverse spectral transform is used to study the transient and asymptotic stages of the dynamics of the solutions.

    Notes: Summary Contractile actomyosin systems play a central role in the generation of intracellular patterns. Models for pattern formation have benefited greatly from the application of mechanochemical theory. However, investigations of the patterns have been primarily qualitative in nature; the two-dimensional nature of the evolving patterns has not yet been addressed mathematically, nor has the evolution of stable heterogeneous steady-state solutions. We consider these issues, supporting our analytical predictions with numerical simulations in one and two spatial dimensions. We show how, for certain gels, the two and three-dimensional tensor equation which describes a balance of forces can be reduced to a reaction-diffusion equation.

    Notes: Summary Engineering and physical systems are often modeled as nonlinear differential equations with a vector λ of parameters and operated at a stable equilibrium. However, as the parameters λ vary from some nominal value λ0, the stability of the equilibrium can be lost in a saddle-node or Hopf bifurcation. The spatial relation in parameter space of λ0 to the critical set of parameters at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates determines the robustness of the system stability to parameter variations and is important in applications. We propose computing a parameter vector λ* at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates which is locally closest in parameter space to the nominal parameters λ0. Iterative and direct methods for computing these locally closest bifurcations are described. The methods are extensions of standard, one-parameter methods of computing bifurcations and are based on formulas for the normal vector to hypersurfaces of the bifurcation set. Conditions on the hypersurface curvature are given to ensure the local convergence of the iterative method and the regularity of solutions of the direct method. Formulas are derived for the curvature of the saddle node bifurcation set. The methods are extended to transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations and parametrized maps, and the sensitivity to λ0 of the distance to a closest bifurcation is derived. The application of the methods is illustrated by computing the proximity to the closest voltage collapse instability of a simple electric power system.

    Notes: Abstract Using a heating rate of 2°C min−1, CaS reacts with oxygen in air from 700°C to form CaSO4, with a complete conversion at 1100°C. Synthesis of CaS from the reaction between CaSO4 containing compounds and carbon compounds in air would not be possible, as the carbon reacts from 600°C with oxygen in the air to give CO2. Heating stoichiometric amounts of carbon and pure CaSO4, synthetic gypsum or phosphogypsum in a nitrogen atmosphere, results in the formation of CaS from 850°C. Using a heating rate of 10°C min−1, the formation of CaS is completed at 1080°C. Addition of 5% Fe2O3 as a catalyst lowers the starting temperature of the reaction to 750°C. Activation energy values at different fraction reaction values (α) differ between 340 and 400 kJ mol−1. The relationship between the activation energy values and conversion (α) indicates that the reaction proceeds via multiple steps.

    Notes: Abstract Modern thermal analysis, microcalorimetry and new emerging combined techniques which deliver calorimetric, microscopic and spectroscopic data offer a powerful analytical battery for the study of pharmaceuticals. These techniques are very useful in all steps of development of new drug products as well as methods for quality control in production. The characterization of raw materials enables to understand the relationships between polymorphs, solvates and hydrates and to choose the proper development of new drug products with very small amount of material in a very short time. Information on stability, purity is valuable for new entities as well as for marketed drug substances from different suppliers. Excipients which vary from single organic or inorganic entity to complexes matrixes or polymers need to be characterized and properly controlled. The thermodynamic phase-diagrams are the basis of the studies of drug-excipients interactions. They are very useful for the development of new delivery systems. A great number of new formulations need proper knowledge of the behaviour of the glass transition temperature of the components. Semi-liquid systems, interactions in aqueous media are also successfully studied by these techniques.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal properties and devitrification behaviour of substituted InF3 glasses were studied by means of differential thermal analysis. A comparison of various simple quantitative methods to assess the level of stability of multicomponent fluoride glass systems was also made. Most of these methods are based on critical temperatures. In this paper, a new parameter,k d(T), is introduced to the stability criteria. The stabilities of several substituted InF3 glasses were evaluated experimentally and correlated with the activation energies of crystallization via this new kinetic criterion and compared with those evaluated by other criteria.

    Notes: Abstract A mathematical model of ignition and burning of organic polymers was used for evaluation and quantification of the tendency of polymers to ignition. The model permits investigation of the influence of one parameter of the polymer on the others. It was found that the model could be used for the verification of the ignitability method developed by Miller et al. [1]. Different steady states of combustion were found when using the model proposed. There is a characteristic steady state for normal flaming combustion, another for non-flaming combustion, and there are also unstable steady states that have no real physical meaning.

    Notes: Abstract In this work we report a thermodynamic characterization of stability and melting behaviour of two 24-mer DNA triplexes. The third strand, that binds the Watson-Crick double helix with Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds, contains 3′-3′ phosphodiester junction that determines the polarity inversion. The target double helix is composed of adjacent and alternate fragments of oligopurine-oligopyrimidine tracts. The two helices differ from the substitution of the cytosine, involved in the junction, with the thymine. Calorimetric data reported here provide a quantitative measure of the influence of pH and base modification on the stability of a DNA triplex.

The superior self-assembling properties of the amphiphiles are advantageous for forming surface monolayer and bilayer membranes (BLMs).     Notes: Abstract We investigate the problem of detecting and assessing, by means of static electrical measurements, damage due to corrosion in a structure. Corrosion damage, which is assumed to occur in an inaccessible part of a specimen, is modelled as material loss. The detection device consists of electrodes which inject DC current and measure voltage potentials in the accessible part of the specimen. The topography of the damaged surface is estimated from the measured data. This research is meant to evaluate if a method based on static electrical measurements has the potential to be developed into a useful nondestructive evaluation tool. We propose computational methods that take the measured data and estimate the unknown damaged surface. The methods are studied in order to understand their properties. Several example calculations from synthetic data are presented. Our findings indicate that such a device has limited resolution. However, it offers several advantages that make it worthwhile to pursue further research.

    Notes: Abstract We modified the isolation procedure of muscle and heart mitochondria. In human muscle, this resulted in a 3.4 fold higher yield of better coupled mitochondria in half the isolation time. In a preparation from rat muscle we studied factors that affected the stability of oxidative phosphorylation (oxphos) and found that it decreased by shaking the preparation on a Vortex machine, by exposure to light and by an increase in storage temperature. The decay was found to be different for each substrate tested. The oxidation of ascorbate was most stable and less sensitive to the treatments. When mitochondria were stored in the dark and the cold, the decrease in oxidative phosphorylation followed first order kinetics. In individual preparations of muscle and heart mitochondria, protection of oxidative phosphorylation was found by adding candidate stabilizers, such as desferrioxamine, lazaroids, taurine, carnitine, phosphocreatine, N-acetylcysteine, Trolox-C and ruthenium red, implying a role for reactive oxygen species and calcium-ions in the in vitro damage at low temperature to oxidative phosphorylation. In heart mitochondria oxphos with pyruvate and palmitoylcarnitine was most labile followed by glutamate, succinate and ascorbate.We studied the effect of taurine, hypotaurine, carnitine, and desferrioxamine on the decay of oxphos with these substrates. 1 mM taurine (n = 6) caused a significant protection of oxphos with pyruvate, glutamate and palmitoylcarnitine, but not with the other substrates. 5 mM L-carnitine (n = 6), 1 mM hypotaurine (n = 3) and 0.1 mM desferrioxamine (n = 3) did not protect oxphos with any of the substrates at a significant level. These experiments were undertaken in the hope that the in vitro stabilizers can be used in future treatment of patients with defects in oxidative phosphorylation. (Mol Cell Biochem 174: 61–66, 1997)

    Notes: Abstract A survey is presented of estimates for a norm of matrix-valued and operator-valued functions obtained by the author. These estimates improve the Gel'fand-Shilov estimate for regular functions of matrices and Carleman's estimates for resolvents of matrices and compact operators. From the estimates for resolvents, the well-known result for spectrum perturbations of self-adjoint operators is extended to quasi-Hermitian operators. In addition, the classical Schur and Brown's inequalities for eigenvalues of matrices are improved. From estimates for the exponential function (semigroups), bounds for solution norms of nonlinear differential equations are derived. These bounds give the stability criteria which make it possible to avoid the construction of Lyapunov functions in appropriate situations.

    Notes: Abstract This paper studies the expected total cost (ETC) criterion for discrete-time Markov control processes on Borel spaces, and possibly unbounded cost-per-stage functions. It presents optimality results which include conditions for a control policy to be ETC-optimal and for the ETC-value function to be a solution of the dynamic programming equation. Conditions are also given for the ETC-value function to be the limit of the α-discounted cost value function as α ↑ 1, and for the Markov control process to be `stable" in the sense of Lagrange and almost surely. In addition, transient control models are fully analized.     Notes: Abstract Trail following in lepidopterous larvae is often attributed to chemical markers, but only a few clear-cut examples are found in the literature. In this paper evidence is presented for a chemical basis of the trail following behaviour ofYponomeuta cagnagellus. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) The marker is shown to be very persistent under laboratory conditions and is water soluble. Several possible secretory sites were investigated, and it is concluded that the marker is probably secreted together with the silk from the labial gland. Problems associated with the demonstration of trail markers in caterpillars are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we address the problems related to critical misfit and thickness in epilayer-substrate combinations of comparable bond strengths; specifically the case in which a pseudomorphic monolayer (ML) is stable and the critical thickness is about three MLs or less. Of particular interest are the average energies related to misfit strain f KS and misfit dislocations (MDs)—in the latter case the individual contributions of the oscillatory strains 〈V〉 and the epilayer-substrate disregistry 〈V〉MD. The individual energies are of interest because they may play different roles in the realization of specific growth modes. The analytical approach involves the following assumptions: (a) a rigid substrate as source of a periodic epilayer atom-substrate interaction potential which we model in terms of a low order truncated Fourier series; and (b) an epilayer which (i) deforms harmonically with zero strain gradient normal to the film plane, (ii) grows in Kurdjumov-Sachs (KS) orientation due to small misfit. f KS and in the layer-by-layer growth mode. Arguments are presented claiming that this interfacial situation may be approximated by a one-dimensional problem in which epilayer stiffness constants and equilibrium structure, as well as epilayer-substrate interaction depend on epilayer thickness; which poses a complex problem. An approximate solution could be obtained by assuming these quantities to be independent of thickness and proximities of the vacuum and the substrate. The most prominent conclusions are that the equilibrium density of MDs and hence the transition from misfit accommodation by MS to one containing MDs is a catastrophic process and that sustained minimum energy may require the overcoming of an energy barrier. While elementary implementation of the results to equilibrium growth mode theory suggests—independently of the catastrophic nature—that energetically favored misfit strain relief by misfit dislocations may, or may not, effect a transition to Stranski-Krastanov growth, a crude numerical calculation favors the transition. A proper implementation of the results require extensive numerical calculations and is planned for the near future.

After drying and calcination up to 1000°C no continuous layer of a zirconia phase could be detected for all samples. However the thermal stability of the porous structure is improved. Phase transitions of alumina occur at temperatures of 1100°C and the porous structure of the membrane material is then destabilized.

    Notes: Abstract The relevance of protein phosphorylation, transphosphorylation and binding phenomena in the kinetics of the ATP-induced assembly of cycle-purified microtubule protein from mammalian brain were studied. ATP was able to induce the polymerization of microtubules of normal appearance. However, the assembled structures, were unstable and microtubules depolymerized after achievement of a transitory maximum. Cyclic AMP reduced the amplitude of the polymerization maximum in a concentration-dependent manner, correlating with the stimulation of the endogenous phosphorylation reaction. When microtubule assembly was induced by GTP, in the presence of various concentrations of ATP, the slope of the depolymerization phase was found to depend on the concentration of ATP. Fluoride ion inhibited the endogenous phosphorylation reaction and reduced the disassembly rate, in a concentration-dependent manner. Evidence is also presented indicating that ATP did not bind to phosphocellulose-purified tubulin. These results further contribute to indicate that ATP and cyclic AMP, acting coordinately to control the phosphorylation extent of microtubule proteins are important factors to determine microtubule stability within the cell. Some implications of this mechanism for the regulation by cAMP of the initiation of DNA synthesis and mitosis are considered.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of exogenously added Ca2+ on the enzymatic activity and structural stability of methanol dehydrogenase were studied for various Ca2+ concentrations. Methanol dehydrogenase activity increased significantly with increasing concentration of Ca2+, approaching saturation at 200 mM Ca2+. The effect of Ca2+ on the activation of MDH was time dependent and Ca2+ specific and was due to binding of the metal ions to the enzyme. Addition of increasing concentration of Ca2+ caused a decrease of the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence intensity in a concentration-dependent manner to a minimum at 200 mM, but with no change in the fluorescence emission maximum wavelength or the CD spectra. The results revealed that the activation of methanol dehydrogenase by Ca2+ occurred concurrently with the conformational change. In addition, exogenously bound Ca2+ destabilized MDH. The potential biological significance of these results is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract It is demonstrated that mixtures of ditetradecyl- phosphatidylcholine or didodecyl-phoshatidylcholine and dihexyl- phosphatidylcholine in water form lyotropic liquid crystalline phases under similar conditions as previously reported for bicelles consisting of dimyristoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and dihexanoyl- phosphatidylcholine (DHPC). The carboxy-ester bonds present in DMPC and DHPC are replaced by ether linkages in their alkyl analogs, which prevents acid- or base-catalyzed hydrolysis of these compounds. 15N-1H dipolar couplings measured for ubiquitin over the 2.3–10.4pH range indicate that this protein retains a backbone conformation which is very similar to its structure at pH 6.5 over this entire range.

    Notes: Abstract The complete amino acid sequences of two isoforms, SP1 and SP2, of mannuronate lyase from a wreath shell,Turbo cornutus, were determined to elucidate amino acid residues responsible for causing the more stable protein conformation of SP2. The sequences of the two isoforms were identical except for two hydrophobic C-terminal amino acid residues of SP2, Ile and Leu, which were additionally attached to Thr of the C-terminal residue of SP1 (253 residues in total). The molecular weight of SP2 was calculated to be 28,912 from the amino acid sequence data. Two disulfide bond cross-linkages were found to be between 106 and 115 and between 145 and 150, and a partially buried single SH group was located at 236. A carbohydrate chain that consisted of 3 GlcNAc, 3 Fuc, and 1 Man was anchored on Asn-105 in a typical carbohydrate-binding motif of Asn-X-Ser. This is the first evidence of the primary structure of mannuronate lyase, and no significant homology of the amino acid sequence among other proteins was found. The C-terminal truncated SP2, which was produced by digestion with carboxypeptidase Y and corresponded structurally to SP1, showed a thermal stability identical to that of SP1. These results indicate that the higher stability of SP2 than SP1 arises from the presence of the C-terminal two hydrophobic amino acid residues.

    Notes: Abstract We address the question of the long term coexistence of three interacting species whose dynamics are governed by the ordinary differential equations x i = X i f i (i = 1, 2, 3). In order for any theory in this area to be useful in practice, it must utilize as little information as possible concerning the forms of the f i , in view of the great difficulty of determining these experimentally. Here we obtain, under rather general conditions on the equations, a criterion for judging whether the species will coexist in a biologically realistic manner. This criterion depends only on the behaviour near the one or two species equilibria of the two dimensional subsystems, the behaviour there being relatively easy to examine experimentally. We show that with the exception of one class of cases, which is a generalization of a classical example of May and Leonard [21], invasibility at each such equilibrium suitably interpreted is both necessary and sufficient for a strong form of coexistence to hold. In the exceptional case, a single additional condition at the equilibria is enough to ensure coexistence.

    Notes: Abstract The deterministic dynamics of the classical single-locus multiple-allele model of gametophytic incompatibility is analyzed with the intention to prove the conjecture that the symmetric state (uniform distribution of genotypes) is the only polymorphic equilibrium and that this equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable in the interior of the frequency simplex. It is shown that the minimum allelic frequency increases strictly over the generations as long as a uniform allelic distribution is not realized. Hence, the minimum allelic frequency is a Ljapunov function for the invariant set of genotypic frequencies characterized by a uniform allelic distribution. Within this set, the uniform genotypic distribution is approached in an exponential fashion, which proves the assertion. An evolutionary optimization rule associated with the global convergence to the symmetric state is implied by the fact that at this state the overall amount of pollen elimination resulting from incompatible crosses is minimized.

    Notes: Abstract The existence of positive equilibrium solutions of the McKendrick equations for the dynamics of an age-structured population is studied as a bifurcation phenomenon using the inherent net reproductive rate n as a bifurcation parameter. The local existence and uniqueness of a branch of positive equilibria which bifurcates from the trivial (identically zero) solution at the critical value n=1 are proved by implicit function techniques under very mild smoothness conditions on the death and fertility rates as functional of age and population density. This first requires the development of a suitable linear theory. The lowest order terms in the Liapunov-Schmidt expansions are also calculated. This local analysis supplements earlier global bifurcation results of the author. The stability of both the trivial and the positive branch equilibria is studied by means of the principle of linearized stability. It is shown that in general the trivial solution losses stability as n increases through one while the stability of the branch solution is stable if and only if the bifurcation is supercritical. Thus the McKendrick equations exhibit, in the latter case, a standard exchange of stability with regard to equilibrium states as they depend on the inherent net reproductive rate. The derived lower order terms in the Liapunov-Schmidt expansions yield formulas which explicitly relate the direction of bifurcation to properties of the age-specific death and fertility rates as functionals of population density. Analytical and numerical results for some examples are given which illustrate these results.

    Notes: Abstract Steric structures of dysprosium(III) aminobenzoate complexes with the 1∶1 and 1∶2 molar ratio in aqueous solutions were determined on the basis of pH-metric and paramagnetic birefringence data. An increase in conjugation observed for the series of the acids,viz., benzoic,meta-, ortho-, andpara-aminobenzoic acids, results in the increased stability of the complexes with the 1∶1 and 1∶2 composition. In the case ofpara-aminobenzoic acid, the polyhedra [DyL(H2O)6]2+ and [DyL2(H2O)4]+ are cubes with the ligands coordinated to one and two edges, respectively. In the case ofmeta-aminobenzoic acid, the polyhedra [DyL(H2O)6]2+ and [DyL2(H2O)4]+ are a dodecahedron with the ligand coordinated to one edge and a square anti-prism with the ligands coordinated to two edges, respectively. In the case ofortho-aminobenzoic acid, both the 1∶1 and 1∶2 complexes have structures that are intermediate between the structures ofmeta- andpara-aminobenzoic acids.

    Notes: Abstract The electronic and geometric structures of the ground state and a number of excited states of the SF6 molecule and the SF 6 − anion have been calculated by the discrete-variation method of the local density-functionals. The anion was found to possess a number of states stable toward the outer electron detachment, and at least one excited state stable toward dissociation. The adiabatic electron affinity (EA) was determined as 3.46 eV at the highest level of theory. This result is correlated to the high EAs of the isovalent compound SeF6 and TeF6; however, it does not agree with the presently accepted experimental estimate of 1.0 ± 0.2 eV for the SF6EA value. The basic anion configuration is octahedral with a S-F bond length of 1.717 Å. The calculated limit for the highest dissociation channel of the ground state SF 6 − → SF 5 − + F is ≈ 1.5 eV lower than the minimum of the total energy of the neutral molecule; this is in good agreement with experimental estimates.

The algorithms proposed are governed by recurrence relations and our principal goal is to study their stability. A recurrence relation will be said stable if the spectral radius of the associated matrix is less than one. The iteration matrices depend on shape parameters which come either from the connection at the knots, or from the nature of the interpolant between two knots. We obtain various stability domains. Moving the parameters inside these domains leads to interesting shape effects.

    Notes: Abstract A second-order accurate numerical method has been proposed for the solution of a coupled non-linear oscillator featuring in chemical kinetics. Although implicit by construction, the method enables the solution of the model initial-value problem (IVP) to be computed explicitly. The second-order method is constructed by taking a linear combination of first-order methods. The stability analysis of the system suggests the existence of a Hopf bifurcation, which is confirmed by the numerical method. Both the critical point of the continuous system and the fixed point of the numerical method will be seen to have the same stability properties. The second-order method is more competitive in terms of numerical stability than some well-known standard methods (such as the Runge–Kutta methods of order two and four).

    Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to design a parenteral dosage form for the investigational cytotoxic drag carzelesin. A stable formulation in PET (Polyethylene glycol 400/absolute ethanol/Tween 80, 6:3:1, v/v/v) was developed. The prototype, containing 0.50 mg carzelesin in 2.0 ml PET formulation, was found to be the optimal formulation in terms of solubility, stability and dosage requirements in phase I clinical trials. Quality control of the formulation showed that the pharmaceutical preparation of carzelesin in PET is not negatively influenced by the manufacturing process. Shelf life studies demonstrated that the formulation is stable for at least 1 year, when stored at −30°C in the dark. In addition, the stability of carzelesin in the PET formulation is discussed as a function of temperature, additives and after dilution in infusion fluids.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a stable parenteral dosage form for the investigational cytotoxic drug [Arg6, D-Trp7,9, MePhe8]-Substance P {6-11} (Substance P Antagonist G; Antagonist G). Antagonist G bulk drug was structurally and analytically characterized. The drug exhibits excellent aqueous solubility, although relatively poor aqueous stability characteristics. Lyophilization was, therefore, selected as the manufacturing process. Differential scanning calorimetry studies were conducted to determine the freeze-drying cycle parameters which resulted in a stable, lyophilized formulation of Antagonist G. The prototype, containing 50 mg Antagonist G per vial, was found to be the optimal formulation in terms of solubility, length of the freeze-drying cycle, stability, and dosage requirements in the planned phase I clinical trials. Quality control of the freeze-dried formulation showed that the manufacturing process does not change the integrity of Antagonist G. Shelf life studies demonstrated that the formulation is stable for at least 3 years, when stored at 2–8°C in a dark environment. Oxidative degradation products of Antagonist G were isolated and structurally characterized by mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy.

    Notes: Abstract This paper investigates the linear stability behaviour of plane Poiseuille flow under unsteady distortion by multiscale perturbation method and discusses further the problem proposed by paper [1]. The results show that in the initial period of disturbance development, the distortion profiles presented by paper [1] will make the disturbances grow up, thus augmenting the possibility of instability.

    Notes: Abstract The general approach for solving the nonlinear equations is linearizing the equations and forming various iterative procedures, then executing the numerical simulation. For the strongly nonlinear problems, the solution obtained in the iterative process is always difficult, even divergent due to the numerical instability. It can not fulfill the engineering requirements. Newton's method and its variants can not settle this problem. As a result, the application of numerical simulation for the strongly nonlinear problems is limited. An auto-adjustable damping method has been presented in this paper. This is a further improvement of Newton's method with damping factor. A set of vector of damping factor is introduced. This set of vector can be adjusted continuously during the iterative process in accordance with the judgement and adjustment. An effective convergence coefficient and quichening coefficient are employed to relax the restricted requirements for the initial values and to shorten the iterative process. Then, the numerical stability will be ensured for the solution of complicated strongly nonlinear equations. Using this method, some complicated strongly nonlinear heat transfer problems in airplanes and aeroengines have been numerically simulated successfully. It can be used for the numerical simulation of strongly nonlinear problems in engineering such as nonlinear hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, heat transfer and structural dynamic response etc.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the disturbances to a uniformly rotating ideal fluid with a sphere moving steadily along the axis of rotation are analysed by using linearization theory, the equations of disturbance, pressure and disturbance stream function governing the stability of motion are derived based on the assumption that the flow is rotational symmetric. The equation of disturbance stream function is analysed with the method of normal modes, and the constraints on wave number and wave velocity of the nontrivial neutral disturbances are established and the exact expression of the neutral disturbances are obtained. The conclusion is drawn that three are three kinds of possible forms of neutral disturbances.

    Notes: Abstract A computation algorithm based on the Poincaré Mapping in combination with Pseudo-Arc Length Continuation Method is presented for calculating the unstable response with saddle-node bifurcation, and the singularity, which occurs using the general continuation method combined with Poincaré Mapping to follow the path, is also proved. A normalization equation can be introduced to avoid the singularity in the process of iteration, and a new iteration algorithm will be presented too. There will be two directions in which the path can be continued at each point, but only one can be used. The method of determining the direction will be presented in the paper. It can be concluded that is method is effective in analysis of nonlinear dynamic system with saddle-node bifurcations.

    Notes: Abstract Generalized semi-Markov processes (GSMPs) and stochastic Petri nets (SPNs) are generally regarded as performance models (as opposed to logical models) of discrete event systems. Here we take the view that GSMPs and SPNS are essentially automata (generators) driven by input sequences that determine the timing of events. This view combines the deterministic, logical aspects and the stochastic, timed aspects of the two models. We focus on two conditions, (M) and (CX) (which we previously developed to study monotonicity and convexity properties of GSMPs), and the antimatroid and lattice structure they imply for the language generated by a GSMP or SPN. We illustrate applications of these structural properties in the areas of derivative estimation, simulation variance reduction, parallel simulation, and optimal control.

    Notes: Abstract Most of the results to date in discrete event supervisory control assume a “zero-or-infinity” structure for the cost of controlling a discrete event system, in the sense that it costs nothing to disable controllable events while uncontrollable events cannot be disabled (i.e., their disablement entails infinite cost). In several applications however, a more refined structure of the control cost becomes necessary in order to quantify the tradeoffs between candidate supervisors. In this paper, we formulate and solve a new optimal control problem for a class of discrete event systems. We assume that the system can be modeled as a finite acylic directed graph, i.e., the system process has a finite set of event trajectories and thus is “terminating.” The optimal control problem explicitly considers the cost of control in the objective function. In general terms, this problem involves a tradeoff between the cost of system evolution, which is quantified in terms of a path cost on the event trajectories generated by the system, and the cost of impacting on the external environment, which is quantified as a dynamic cost on control. We also seek a least restrictive solution. An algorithm based on dynamic programming is developed for the solution of this problem. This algorithm is based on a graph-theoretic formulation of the problem. The use of dynamic programming allows for the efficient construction of an “optimal subgraph” (i.e., optimal supervisor) of the given graph (i.e., discrete event system) with respect to the cost structure imposed. We show that this algorithm is of polynomial complexity in the number of vertices of the graph of the system.

    Notes: Abstract A continuous time dynamic model of discrete scheduling problems for a large class of manufacturing systems is considered in the present paper. The realistic manufacturing based on multi-level bills of materials, flexible machines, controllable buffers and deterministic demand profiles is modeled in the canonical form of optimal control. Carrying buffer costs are minimized by controlling production rates of all machines that can be set up instantly. The maximum principle for the model is studied and properties of the optimal production regimes are revealed. The solution method developed rests on the iterative approach generalizing the method of projected gradient, but takes advantage of the analytical properties of the optimal solution to reduce significantly computational efforts. Computational experiments presented demonstrate effectiveness of the approach in comparison with pure iterative method.

    Notes: Abstract Recently it has been shown that the conventional notions of stability in the sense of Lyapunov and asymptotic stability can be used to characterize the stability properties of a class of “logical” discrete event systems (DES). Moreover, it has been shown that stability analysis via the choice of appropriate Lyapunov functions can be used for DES and can be applied to several DES applications including manufacturing systems and computer networks (Passino et al. 1994, Burgess and Passino 1994). In this paper we extend the conventional notions and analysis of uniform boundedness, uniform ultimate boundedness, practical stability, finite time stability, and Lagrange stability so that they apply to the class of logical DES that can be defined on a metric space. Within this stability-theoretic framework we show that the standard Petri net-theoretic notions of boundedness are special cases of Lagrange stability and uniform boundedness. In addition we show that the Petri ent-theoretic approach to boundedness analysis is actually a Lyapunov approach in that the net-theoretic analysis actually produces an appropriate Lyapunov function. Moreover, via the Lyapunov approach we provide a sufficient condition for the uniform ultimate boundedness of General Petri nets. To illustrate the Petri net results, we study the boundedness properties of a rate synchronization network for manufacturing systems. In addition, we provide a detailed analysis of the Lagrange stability of a single-machine manufacturing system that uses a priority-based part servicing policy.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, timed Petri nets are used to model and control hybrid systems. Petri nets are used instead of finite automata primarily because of the advantages they offer in dealing with concurrency and complexity issues. A brief overview of existing results on hybrid systems that are based on Petri nets is first presented. A class of timed Petri nets named programmable timed Petri nets (PTPN) is then used to model hybrid systems. Using the PTPN, the stability and supervisory control of hybrid systems are addressed and efficient algorithms are introduced. In particular, we present sufficient conditions for the uniform ultimate boundness of hybrid systems composed of multiple linear time invariant plants which are switched between using a logical rule described by a Petri net. This paper also examines the supervisory control of a hybrid system in which the continuous state is transfered to a region of the state space in a way that respects safety specifications on the plant's discrete and continuous dynamics.

    Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the asymptotic behavior of the stochastic dynamics of discrete event systems. In this paper we focus on a wide class of models arising in several fields and particularly in computer science. This class of models may be characterized by stochastic recurrence equations in ℝK of the form T(n+1) = φ n+1(T(n)) where φ n is a random operator monotone and 1—linear. We establish that the behaviour of the extremas of the process T(n) are linear. The results are an application of the sub-additive ergodic theorem of Kingman. We also give some stability properties of such sequences and a simple method of estimating the limit points.

    Notes: Abstract This paper discusses dynamic methods for solving a class of multi-project scheduling problems in which rates of job performances are controllable and resources such as money, energy or manpower per time unit, are renewable and continuously divisible. The objective is to complete the projects as close to the common due date as possible. Two different ways of imposing sequential precedence relations between project jobs are explored by formulating two dynamic models and studying their relationships on the optimal solution.     Notes: Abstract We present some new results which definitively explain thebehavior of the classical, heuristic nonlinear relaxation labelingalgorithm of Rosenfeld, Hummel, and Zucker in terms of theHummel-Zucker consistency theory and dynamical systems theory. Inparticular, it is shown that, when a certain symmetry condition is met,the algorithm possesses a Liapunov function which turns out to be (thenegative of) a well-known consistency measure. This follows almostimmediately from a powerful result of Baum and Eagon developed in thecontext of Markov chain theory. Moreover, it is seen that most of theessential dynamical properties of the algorithm are retained when thesymmetry restriction is relaxed. These properties are also shown tonaturally generalize to higher-order relaxation schemes. Someapplications and implications of the presented results are finallyoutlined.

    Notes: Abstract We propose a modeling framework for a class of hybrid systems which arise in many manufacturing environments and study related optimal control problems. In this framework, discrete entities have a state characterized by a temporal component whose evolution is described by event-driven dynamics, and a physical component whose evolution is described by time-driven dynamics. As a first step towards developing an optimal control theory for such hybrid systems, we formulate a problem consisting of a single-stage manufacturing process and use calculus of variations techniques to obtain structural properties and an explicit algorithm for deriving optimal policies.

    Notes: Abstract Based on some practical engineering problems arising from process control and space-structure control, this paper studies a class of hybrid dynamic systems in which N plants are controlled by a central controller in sharing time manner, where the plants are described by differential equations and the controller works according to the mechanism of discrete events. An event feedback strategy is suggested to be a scheduling policy such that one and only one plant among N plants is chosen to be controlled at any time. Some conditions of asymptotical and exponential stability are then given and an exponential upper bound of states norm is also estimated for the event feedback scheduling strategy. An algorithm based on event feedback strategy is presented to determine the control laws of the plants to meet the given performance. An example follows to illustrate the application and effect of the results.

    Notes: Abstract Sharifnia, Caramanis, and Gershwin [1991] introduced a class of policies for manufacturing systems, called by themlinear corridor policies. They proved that their stability can be discussed by the study of a simpler subset of such policies (cone policies). This paper revisits their work presenting a different description of the dynamics of the systems under study and explores it to device a necessary and sufficient condition for stability, obtained by the strengthening of the assumptions in Sharifnia et al. (1991). This condition is shown to be simply tested (M −1≥0) and valid for various realizations.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the problem of production planning in a flexible manufacturing system consisting of a single or parallel failure-prone machines producing a number of different products. The objective is to choose the rates of production of the various products over time in order to meet their demands at the minimum long-run average cost of production and surplus. The analysis proceeds with a study of the corresponding problem with a discounted cost. It is shown using the vanishing discount approach for the average cost problem that the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in terms of directional derivatives has a solution consisting of the minimal average cost and the so-called potential function. The result helps in establishing a verification theorem, and in specifying an optimal control policy in terms of the potential function. The results settle a hitherto open problem as well as generalize known results.

    Notes: Abstract The pH dependence of the interconversion kinetics, equilibrium, and solubilities of the lactone and hydroxyacid forms of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, CI-981 ([R-(R*,R*)]-2-(4-fluorophenyl)-β,δ-dihydroxy-5-(l-methylethyl)-3-phenyl-4-[(phenylamino)carbonyl]-lH-pyrrole-l-hepatonic acid), are important considerations when chosing and developing one of the forms of these compounds. Over a pH range of 2.1 to 6.0 and at 30°C, the apparent solubility of the sodium salt of CI-981 (i.e., the hydroxyacid form) increases about 60-fold, from 20.4 µg/mL to 1.23 mg/mL, and the profile yields a pK a for the terminal carboxyl group of 4.46. In contrast, over a pH range of 2.3 to 7.7 and also at 30°C, the apparent solubility of the lactone form of CI-981 varies little, and the mean solubility is 1.34 (±0.53) µg/mL. The kinetics of interconversion and the equilibrium between the hydroxyacid and the lactone forms have been studied as a function of pH, buffer concentration, and temperature at a fixed ionic strength (0.5 M) using a stability-indicating HPLC assay. The acid-catalyzed reaction is reversible, whereas the base-catalyzed reaction can be treated as an irreversible reaction. More specifically, at pH 〈6, an equilibrium favoring the hydroxyacid form is established, whereas at pH 〉6, the equilibrium reaction is no longer detectable and greatly favors the hydroxyacid form. The rate constant for lactone formation, k 1 is well described by specific acid-catalyzed and spontaneous lactonization pathways, whereas the rate constant for lactone hydrolysis (or hydroxyacid formation), k 2, is well described by specific acid-, water-, and specific base-catalyzed pathways.

    Notes: Abstract The combination of sedimentation field-flow fractionation (SedFFF) and photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) is shown to provide a detailed record of the droplet sizes present in fat emulsions commonly used in parenteral nutrition. The technique presented has been used to record size distribution data for a particular emulsion (Liposyn-II), demonstrating its high stability and lot-to-lot uniformity. The technique is also able to demonstrate how additions of small amounts of electrolytes [0.45% (w/v) NaCl, 0.05% (w/v) CaCl2] tend to destabilize the emulsion, suggesting some caution in the use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) mixtures. In contrast, a 1:1 mixture with human serum caused no sign of instability in the Liposyn-II. Using the emulsion as a carrier for lipophilic drugs necessitates adding solutions of the drug in nonaqueous solvents, such as DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide). This solvent's destabilizing effect results in a droplet coalescence that becomes severe after 3–5 days following a 10% (v/v) addition, while a 5% (v/v) addition reaches the same level of coalescence in 10 days.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. Protein stabilization during lyophilization has previously focused on optimization of the formulation as well as the freezing and dehydration process parameters. However, the effect of the reconstitution medium has been largely neglected. We have investigated its effect on aggregate formation using recombinant keratinocyte growth factor (KGF). Methods. The protein was lyophilized under suboptimal conditions to induce aggregation and precipitation upon reconstitution with water. A series of additives were examined by UV spectrophotometry and size exclusion chromatography (SEC-HPLC) for their effects on decreasing the degree of KGF aggregation and precipitation by the increase in recovery of soluble monomer. Results. Several additives resulted in a significant reduction of aggregation, including sulfated polysaccharides, surfactants, polyphosphates, and amino acids. A similar effect was achieved by adjusting the ionic strength of the reconstitution medium. SEC-HPLC indicated that the amount of soluble monomer was also increased by these additives suggesting that the recovery of the soluble protein correlates with the native, monomeric protein. Conclusions. These results suggest that optimization of reconstitution conditions will be a useful methodology for increasing the recovery of soluble, active proteins and that for KGF, the recovery of the soluble protein correlates with the native, monomeric form.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of demethylation of aspartame and L-phenylalanine methyl ester were studied in aqueous solution at 25°C over the pH range 0.27–11.5. The pseudo-first-order rate constant for aspartame was resolved into individual contributions from methyl ester hydrolysis and diketopiperazine formation. pH – rate profiles were quantitatively described by chemically reasonable kinetic schemes. Aspartame is maximally stable at pH 4 (t 90 = 53 days at 25°C); phe-nylalanine methyl ester, at pH 3. The potentiometrically measured pK a values were pK a1 3.19 and pK a2 7.87 fr aspartame and pKa 7.11 for phenylalanine methyl ester.
