Description: "What motivates international scientists to research and teach at German Universities? How successful is their professional and social integration? What are their long-term career objectives? The MIND study at GATE-Germany (a consortium for international university marketing funded by DAAD and HRK) comprehensively surveyed international post-doctoral academics for the first time on their decision motivation, organisational challenges and their professional and social integration across all participating universities. The resulting quantitative data delivers empirical information about needs and decision criteria of young, post-doctoral academics and therefore expands the experience knowledge of the universities."

Description: The reader is presented with 20 case examples, so-called Critical Incidents (CIs), which explain how to ensure a smooth encounter between Germany and Russia. The CIs promote empathy and the ability to switch perspectives. At the same time, they allow for new viewpoints in the context of German-Russian interactions. The publication addresses topics such as hospitality and welcoming culture, the expression of frustration and criticism, action processes, professional collaboration, external image, linguistic exchange, and approaches to overcome language barriers. Each of the 20 case examples from everyday life, school, and university are described by means of questions and possible solutions, which participants in language courses and exchange programmes as well as employees of international organisations can use to prepare themselves for short or long-term stays in Germany or Russia.

Description: What are the effects of migration into Germany on growth and employment? Can immigrants close the skilled worker gap? Is Germany an immigration country? The study develops an empirically founded profile of changes in the economy and society in Germany until 2030. It identifies skilled worker bottlenecks and offers recommendations for ensuring a sufficient supply of workers. That includes the integration of migrants, an expansion of the adult education system and a long-term, forward-looking family policy on the basis of an improved compatibility of family and work life. The study was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales).

Description: Who is employed in further education programmes? What are their qualifications? Under which conditions do they work and how satisfied are they with their work? It is the first study to provide representative data on the qualifications, employment situations and working conditions of employees in the adult and further education industry. The data of this two-step personnel survey was collected in 2014. More than 6,000 adult educators from more than 1,800 training institutions participated in the survey. This study serves as a supplement to educational reporting in Germany, which has hitherto rather been focussed on providers, offers and participation. Furthermore, it offers a reliable basis for assessments regarding the professionalisation of adult and further education. Moreover, the collected data may be used for further research.

Description: The Baltic Sea Region is an important example of the regionalisation of international academic cooperation. This is the conclusion of the 17th DAAD study on international scientific mobility. On an annual basis, the paper documents the status quo as well as developments in the internationality of German science and universities. The study also examines other countries such as the USA, China, and Great Britain. The emphasis of this issue lies on academic mobility and cooperation within the Baltic Sea Region. Among other sources, the included mobility analyses by scientists, students, and doctoral students are based on international data by the OECD and UNESCO as well as on national data by the German Federal Statistical Office. In combination with other indicators, this data offers a valid foundation for long-term analyses. "Cosmopolitan Academia" (Wissenschaft Weltoffen) is published as a bilingual German/English issue. The study text and diagrams are available for free download at wbv

Description: "The third long-term forecast by Economix estimates the implications of the recent influx of refugees on the German labour market as well as the qualification structure among the employees. At the same time, it forecasts the opportunities and risks of digitalisation. All analyses come to the conclusion that the integration of refugees into the labour market represents the primary task of the coming five to ten years. Indeed, the immigration of refugees rejuvenates the population. However, it also causes a decline in the qualification structure of labour supply. The authors emphasise both the necessity of extensive and systematic further education programs for all employees as well as the importance of developing educational services for refugees and encouraging them to participate in vocational education. The digitalisation scenario shows considerable increases in growth and employment as a consequence of the use of digital technologies. However, this positive development requires

Description: This report provides the reader with empirical findings on junior researchers in Germany. The reconciliation of family and an academic career constitutes the central issue of the report. Other topics are work and employment conditions, qualification conditions during the doctoral phase, as well as career paths and perspectives, particularly during the post doctoral phase. Topics such as mobility behaviour and contributions to the research, teaching, and transfer of junior scientists as well as the educational returns of a doctoral degree are also addressed. The report is primarily based on data from official statistics and surveys conducted on a regular basis. At the same time, the paper examines the collected data with greater emphasis on the comparability and classification of the findings. In doing so, the report provides universities, research institutes, interest groups, funding agencies, and decision makers at federal and state level with essential knowledge on the topic.

Description: Soil biodiversity is increasingly recognized as providing benefits to human health because it can suppress disease-causing soil organisms and provide clean air, water and food. Poor land-management practices and environmental change are, however, affecting belowground communities globally, and the resulting declines in soil biodiversity reduce and impair these benefits. Importantly, current research indicates that soil biodiversity can be maintained and partially restored if managed sustainably. Promoting the ecological complexity and robustness of soil biodiversity through improved management practices represents an underutilized resource with the ability to improve human health.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wall, Diana H -- Nielsen, Uffe N -- Six, Johan -- England -- Nature. 2015 Dec 3;528(7580):69-76. doi: 10.1038/nature15744. Description: The exchange of nutrients, energy and carbon between soil organic matter, the soil environment, aquatic systems and the atmosphere is important for agricultural productivity, water quality and climate. Long-standing theory suggests that soil organic matter is composed of inherently stable and chemically unique compounds. Here we argue that the available evidence does not support the formation of large-molecular-size and persistent 'humic substances' in soils. Instead, soil organic matter is a continuum of progressively decomposing organic compounds. We discuss implications of this view of the nature of soil organic matter for aquatic health, soil carbon-climate interactions and land management.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lehmann, Johannes -- Kleber, Markus -- England -- Nature. 2015 Dec 3;528(7580):60-8. doi: 10.1038/nature16069. Description: Ancient and diverse antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have previously been identified from soil, including genes identical to those in human pathogens. Despite the apparent overlap between soil and clinical resistomes, factors influencing ARG composition in soil and their movement between genomes and habitats remain largely unknown. General metagenome functions often correlate with the underlying structure of bacterial communities. However, ARGs are proposed to be highly mobile, prompting speculation that resistomes may not correlate with phylogenetic signatures or ecological divisions. To investigate these relationships, we performed functional metagenomic selections for resistance to 18 antibiotics from 18 agricultural and grassland soils. The 2,895 ARGs we discovered were mostly new, and represent all major resistance mechanisms. We demonstrate that distinct soil types harbour distinct resistomes, and that the addition of nitrogen fertilizer strongly influenced soil ARG content. Resistome composition also correlated with microbial phylogenetic and taxonomic structure, both across and within soil types. Consistent with this strong correlation, mobility elements (genes responsible for horizontal gene transfer between bacteria such as transposases and integrases) syntenic with ARGs were rare in soil by comparison with sequenced pathogens, suggesting that ARGs may not transfer between soil bacteria as readily as is observed between human pathogens. Together, our results indicate that bacterial community composition is the primary determinant of soil ARG content, challenging previous hypotheses that horizontal gene transfer effectively decouples resistomes from phylogeny.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4079543/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4079543/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Forsberg, Kevin J -- Patel, Sanket -- Gibson, Molly K -- Lauber, Christian L -- Knight, Rob -- Fierer, Noah -- Dantas, Gautam -- DP2 DK098089/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- DP2-DK-098089/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- GM 007067/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- T32 GM007067/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- T32 HG000045/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- Howard Hughes Medical Institute/ -- England -- Nature. 2014 May 29;509(7502):612-6. doi: 10.1038/nature13377. Description: Recent studies have shown that neonicotinoid insecticides have adverse effects on non-target invertebrate species. Invertebrates constitute a substantial part of the diet of many bird species during the breeding season and are indispensable for raising offspring. We investigated the hypothesis that the most widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, imidacloprid, has a negative impact on insectivorous bird populations. Here we show that, in the Netherlands, local population trends were significantly more negative in areas with higher surface-water concentrations of imidacloprid. At imidacloprid concentrations of more than 20 nanograms per litre, bird populations tended to decline by 3.5 per cent on average annually. Additional analyses revealed that this spatial pattern of decline appeared only after the introduction of imidacloprid to the Netherlands, in the mid-1990s. We further show that the recent negative relationship remains after correcting for spatial differences in land-use changes that are known to affect bird populations in farmland. Our results suggest that the impact of neonicotinoids on the natural environment is even more substantial than has recently been reported and is reminiscent of the effects of persistent insecticides in the past. Future legislation should take into account the potential cascading effects of neonicotinoids on ecosystems.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hallmann, Caspar A -- Foppen, Ruud P B -- van Turnhout, Chris A M -- de Kroon, Hans -- Jongejans, Eelke -- England -- Nature. 2014 Jul 17;511(7509):341-3. doi: 10.1038/nature13531. Description: Agriculture has been a large part of the ecological success of humans. A handful of animals, notably the fungus-growing ants, termites and ambrosia beetles, have advanced agriculture that involves dispersal and seeding of food propagules, cultivation of the crop and sustainable harvesting. More primitive examples, which could be called husbandry because they involve fewer adaptations, include marine snails farming intertidal fungi and damselfish farming algae. Recent work has shown that microorganisms are surprisingly like animals in having sophisticated behaviours such as cooperation, communication and recognition, as well as many kinds of symbiosis. Here we show that the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum has a primitive farming symbiosis that includes dispersal and prudent harvesting of the crop. About one-third of wild-collected clones engage in husbandry of bacteria. Instead of consuming all bacteria in their patch, they stop feeding early and incorporate bacteria into their fruiting bodies. They then carry bacteria during spore dispersal and can seed a new food crop, which is a major advantage if edible bacteria are lacking at the new site. However, if they arrive at sites already containing appropriate bacteria, the costs of early feeding cessation are not compensated for, which may account for the dichotomous nature of this farming symbiosis. The striking convergent evolution between bacterial husbandry in social amoebas and fungus farming in social insects makes sense because multigenerational benefits of farming go to already established kin groups.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brock, Debra A -- Douglas, Tracy E -- Queller, David C -- Strassmann, Joan E -- England -- Nature. 2011 Jan 20;469(7330):393-6. doi: 10.1038/nature09668.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Rice University, 6100 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77005, USA. dbrock@rice.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21248849" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: China is the world's most populous country and a major emitter of greenhouse gases. Consequently, much research has focused on China's influence on climate change but somewhat less has been written about the impact of climate change on China. China experienced explosive economic growth in recent decades, but with only 7% of the world's arable land available to feed 22% of the world's population, China's economy may be vulnerable to climate change itself. We find, however, that notwithstanding the clear warming that has occurred in China in recent decades, current understanding does not allow a clear assessment of the impact of anthropogenic climate change on China's water resources and agriculture and therefore China's ability to feed its people. To reach a more definitive conclusion, future work must improve regional climate simulations-especially of precipitation-and develop a better understanding of the managed and unmanaged responses of crops to changes in climate, diseases, pests and atmospheric constituents.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Piao, Shilong -- Ciais, Philippe -- Huang, Yao -- Shen, Zehao -- Peng, Shushi -- Li, Junsheng -- Zhou, Liping -- Liu, Hongyan -- Ma, Yuecun -- Ding, Yihui -- Friedlingstein, Pierre -- Liu, Chunzhen -- Tan, Kun -- Yu, Yongqiang -- Zhang, Tianyi -- Fang, Jingyun -- England -- Nature. 2010 Sep 2;467(7311):43-51. doi: 10.1038/nature09364.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Ecology, College of Urban and Environmental Science, Key Laboratory for Earth Surface Processes of the Ministry of Education, and Center of Climate Research, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China. slpiao@pku.edu.cn〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20811450" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Significant changes in physical and biological systems are occurring on all continents and in most oceans, with a concentration of available data in Europe and North America. Most of these changes are in the direction expected with warming temperature. Here we show that these changes in natural systems since at least 1970 are occurring in regions of observed temperature increases, and that these temperature increases at continental scales cannot be explained by natural climate variations alone. Given the conclusions from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report that most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-twentieth century is very likely to be due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations, and furthermore that it is likely that there has been significant anthropogenic warming over the past 50 years averaged over each continent except Antarctica, we conclude that anthropogenic climate change is having a significant impact on physical and biological systems globally and in some continents.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Rosenzweig, Cynthia -- Karoly, David -- Vicarelli, Marta -- Neofotis, Peter -- Wu, Qigang -- Casassa, Gino -- Menzel, Annette -- Root, Terry L -- Estrella, Nicole -- Seguin, Bernard -- Tryjanowski, Piotr -- Liu, Chunzhen -- Rawlins, Samuel -- Imeson, Anton -- England -- Nature. 2008 May 15;453(7193):353-7. doi: 10.1038/nature06937.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia Center for Climate Systems Research, 2800 Broadway, New York, New York 10025, USA. crosenzweig@giss.nasa.gov〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18480817" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Anthropogenic addition of bioavailable nitrogen to the biosphere is increasing and terrestrial ecosystems are becoming increasingly nitrogen-saturated, causing more bioavailable nitrogen to enter groundwater and surface waters. Large-scale nitrogen budgets show that an average of about 20-25 per cent of the nitrogen added to the biosphere is exported from rivers to the ocean or inland basins, indicating that substantial sinks for nitrogen must exist in the landscape. Streams and rivers may themselves be important sinks for bioavailable nitrogen owing to their hydrological connections with terrestrial systems, high rates of biological activity, and streambed sediment environments that favour microbial denitrification. Here we present data from nitrogen stable isotope tracer experiments across 72 streams and 8 regions representing several biomes. We show that total biotic uptake and denitrification of nitrate increase with stream nitrate concentration, but that the efficiency of biotic uptake and denitrification declines as concentration increases, reducing the proportion of in-stream nitrate that is removed from transport. Our data suggest that the total uptake of nitrate is related to ecosystem photosynthesis and that denitrification is related to ecosystem respiration. In addition, we use a stream network model to demonstrate that excess nitrate in streams elicits a disproportionate increase in the fraction of nitrate that is exported to receiving waters and reduces the relative role of small versus large streams as nitrate sinks.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Mulholland, Patrick J -- Helton, Ashley M -- Poole, Geoffrey C -- Hall, Robert O -- Hamilton, Stephen K -- Peterson, Bruce J -- Tank, Jennifer L -- Ashkenas, Linda R -- Cooper, Lee W -- Dahm, Clifford N -- Dodds, Walter K -- Findlay, Stuart E G -- Gregory, Stanley V -- Grimm, Nancy B -- Johnson, Sherri L -- McDowell, William H -- Meyer, Judy L -- Valett, H Maurice -- Webster, Jackson R -- Arango, Clay P -- Beaulieu, Jake J -- Bernot, Melody J -- Burgin, Amy J -- Crenshaw, Chelsea L -- Johnson, Laura T -- Niederlehner, B R -- O'Brien, Jonathan M -- Potter, Jody D -- Sheibley, Richard W -- Sobota, Daniel J -- Thomas, Suzanne M -- England -- Nature. 2008 Mar 13;452(7184):202-5. doi: 10.1038/nature06686.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Environmental Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee 37831, USA. mulhollandpj@ornl.gov〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18337819" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
