    Description: 〈span〉Recent studies have debated the timing and spatial configuration of a possible intersection between the Pacific-Izanagi spreading ridge and the northeast Asian continental margin during Cretaceous or early Cenozoic times. Here we examine a newly compiled magmatic catalog of ~900 published Cretaceous to Miocene igneous rock radioisotopic values and ages from the northeast Asian margin for ridge subduction evidence. Our synthesis reveals that a nearsynchronous 56–46 Ma magmatic gap occurred across ~1500 km of the Eurasian continental margin between Japan and Sikhote-Alin, Russian Far East. The magmatic gap separated two distinct phases of igneous activity: (1) an older, Cretaceous to Paleocene pre–56 Ma episode that had relatively lower ε〈sub〉Nd(t)〈/sub〉 (–15 to + 2), elevated (〈sup〉87〈/sup〉Sr/〈sup〉86〈/sup〉Sr)〈sub〉0〈/sub〉 (initial ratio, 0.704–0.714), and relatively higher magmatic fluxes (~1090 km〈sup〉2〈/sup〉/m.y.); and (2) a younger, late Eocene to Miocene post–46 Ma phase that had relatively elevated ε〈sub〉Nd(t)〈/sub〉 (–2 to + 10), lower (〈sup〉87〈/sup〉Sr/〈sup〉86〈/sup〉Sr)〈sub〉0〈/sub〉 (0.702–0.707), and a lower 390 km〈sup〉2〈/sup〉/m.y. magmatic flux. The 56–46 Ma magmatic gap links other geological evidence across northeast Asia to constrain an early Cenozoic, low-angle ridge-trench intersection that had profound consequences for the Eurasian continental margin, and possibly led to the ca. 53–47 Ma Pacific plate reorganization.〈/span〉

    Description: Specificity for signaling by cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) is achieved by both targeting and isoform diversity. The inactive PKA holoenzyme has two catalytic (C) subunits and a regulatory (R) subunit dimer (R2:C2). Although the RIα, RIIα, and RIIβ isoforms are well studied, little is known about RIβ. We show here that RIβ is enriched selectively in mitochondria and hypothesized that its unique biological importance and functional nonredundancy will correlate with its structure. Small-angle X-ray scattering showed that the overall shape of RIβ2:C2 is different from its closest homolog, RIα2:C2. The full-length RIβ2:C2 crystal structure allows us to visualize all the domains of the PKA holoenzyme complex and shows how isoform-specific assembly of holoenzyme complexes can create distinct quaternary structures even though the R1:C1 heterodimers are similar in all isoforms. The creation of discrete isoform-specific PKA holoenzyme signaling “foci” paves the way for exploring further biological roles of PKA RIβ and establishes a paradigm for PKA signaling.

    Description: We report that triangular gold nanoprisms in the presence of attractive depletion forces and repulsive electrostatic forces assemble into equilibrium one-dimensional lamellar crystals in solution with interparticle spacings greater than four times the thickness of the nanoprisms. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the anomalously large d spacings of the lamellar superlattices are due to a balance between depletion and electrostatic interactions, both of which arise from the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The effects of surfactant concentration, temperature, ionic strength of the solution, and prism edge length on the lattice parameters have been investigated and provide a variety of tools for in situ modulation of these colloidal superstructures. Additionally, we demonstrate a purification procedure based on our observations that can be used to efficiently separate triangular nanoprisms from spherical nanoparticles formed concomitantly during their synthesis.

    Description: 〈p〉Peripheral neuromodulation has been widely used throughout clinical practices and basic neuroscience research. However, the mechanical and geometrical mismatches at current electrode-nerve interfaces and complicated surgical implantation often induce irreversible neural damage, such as axonal degradation. Here, compatible with traditional 2D planar processing, we propose a 3D twining electrode by integrating stretchable mesh serpentine wires onto a flexible shape memory substrate, which has permanent shape reconfigurability (from 2D to 3D), distinct elastic modulus controllability (from ~100 MPa to ~300 kPa), and shape memory recoverability at body temperature. Similar to the climbing process of twining plants, the temporarily flattened 2D stiff twining electrode can naturally self-climb onto nerves driven by 37°C normal saline and form 3D flexible neural interfaces with minimal constraint on the deforming nerves. In vivo animal experiments, including right vagus nerve stimulation for reducing the heart rate and action potential recording of the sciatic nerve, demonstrate the potential clinical utility.〈/p〉

    Description: 〈p〉Peptide macrocycles often display diverse bioactivities and self-assembly properties, which lead to a variety of applications in medicinal and material sciences. Transition metal–catalyzed C▬H activations are emerging strategies for site-selective functionalization of amino acids and peptides, as well as the construction of cyclic peptides. Here, we report the development of a peptide-directed method for the macrocyclization of peptidoarylacetamides by Pd(II)-catalyzed late-stage C(sp〈sup〉2〈/sup〉)▬H olefination. In this protocol, peptide backbones act as internal directing groups and enable facile preparation of diverse cyclic peptides that are difficult to synthesize by conventional macrolactamization. Furthermore, we show that the incorporation of aryl-alkene cross-link in the backbone constrains cyclic peptides into conformations for self-assembly.〈/p〉

Many of these rivers have their original sources on the Tibetan Plateau and are fed by the rains of the summer monsoon that are especially intense around the edge of the plateau (Fig. 1). In turn, the climate and tectonically generated topography account for the high sediment loads of the rivers that subsequently construct a number of giant deltas across the region and result in the construction of some of the widest continental shelves seen anywhere globally. Understanding the marine sedimentary records of the East Asian marginal seas has been a focus for geologists for many years. This is because the sediments can be used to constrain the origin of the sedimentary basins themselves, via subsidence analysis, and because the sediments can be used to reconstruct sedimentary conditions onshore in the terrestrial basins at the time of their deposition.
