    Description / Table of Contents: The rivers of East Asia are some of the largest and most important to human society and the global economy. They drain a variety of terrains from the Tibetan plateau, the hill country of southern China and the steep mountains of Taiwan. The sediment they carry potentially records the long-term evolution of continental environments within the marine stratigraphic record. Sediments reaching the ocean have to traverse the wide continental shelves where they may be reworked and transported by longshore currents, typhoon storm waves, as well as large ocean currents such as the Kuroshio. Deciphering any marine record requires us to understand the dynamics of sediment transport on the continental shelves, and this region acts as a global type example of such processes. Studies in this volume span a wide range of subdisciplines in the marine sciences and provide new insights into how sediment is distributed offshore after leaving the river mouths.

    Description: 〈span〉Recent studies have debated the timing and spatial configuration of a possible intersection between the Pacific-Izanagi spreading ridge and the northeast Asian continental margin during Cretaceous or early Cenozoic times. Here we examine a newly compiled magmatic catalog of ~900 published Cretaceous to Miocene igneous rock radioisotopic values and ages from the northeast Asian margin for ridge subduction evidence. Our synthesis reveals that a nearsynchronous 56–46 Ma magmatic gap occurred across ~1500 km of the Eurasian continental margin between Japan and Sikhote-Alin, Russian Far East. The magmatic gap separated two distinct phases of igneous activity: (1) an older, Cretaceous to Paleocene pre–56 Ma episode that had relatively lower ε〈sub〉Nd(t)〈/sub〉 (–15 to + 2), elevated (〈sup〉87〈/sup〉Sr/〈sup〉86〈/sup〉Sr)〈sub〉0〈/sub〉 (initial ratio, 0.704–0.714), and relatively higher magmatic fluxes (~1090 km〈sup〉2〈/sup〉/m.y.); and (2) a younger, late Eocene to Miocene post–46 Ma phase that had relatively elevated ε〈sub〉Nd(t)〈/sub〉 (–2 to + 10), lower (〈sup〉87〈/sup〉Sr/〈sup〉86〈/sup〉Sr)〈sub〉0〈/sub〉 (0.702–0.707), and a lower 390 km〈sup〉2〈/sup〉/m.y. magmatic flux. The 56–46 Ma magmatic gap links other geological evidence across northeast Asia to constrain an early Cenozoic, low-angle ridge-trench intersection that had profound consequences for the Eurasian continental margin, and possibly led to the ca. 53–47 Ma Pacific plate reorganization.〈/span〉

    Description: In this paper, we present a statistical analysis of six traffic features based on entropy and distinct feature number at the packet level, and we find that, although these traffic features are unstable and show seasonal patterns like traffic volume in a long-time period, they are stable and consistent with Gaussian distribution in a short-time period. However, this equilibrium property will be violated by some anomalies. Based on this observation, we propose a Multi-dimensional Box plot method for Short-time scale Traffic (MBST) to classify abnormal and normal traffic. We compare our new method with the MCST method proposed in our prior work and the well-known wavelet-based and A Short-Timescale Uncorrelated-Traffic Equilibrium (ASTUTE) techniques. The detection result on synthetic anomaly traffic shows that MBST can better detect the low-rate attacks than wavelet-based and MCST methods, and detection result on real traffic demonstrates that MBST can detect more anomalies with lower false alarm rate than the two methods. Especially compared with ASTUTE, MBST performs much better for detecting anomalies involving a few large flows despite a little poor for detecting anomalies involving large number of small flows.

    Description: 〈p〉Peptide macrocycles often display diverse bioactivities and self-assembly properties, which lead to a variety of applications in medicinal and material sciences. Transition metal–catalyzed C▬H activations are emerging strategies for site-selective functionalization of amino acids and peptides, as well as the construction of cyclic peptides. Here, we report the development of a peptide-directed method for the macrocyclization of peptidoarylacetamides by Pd(II)-catalyzed late-stage C(sp〈sup〉2〈/sup〉)▬H olefination. In this protocol, peptide backbones act as internal directing groups and enable facile preparation of diverse cyclic peptides that are difficult to synthesize by conventional macrolactamization. Furthermore, we show that the incorporation of aryl-alkene cross-link in the backbone constrains cyclic peptides into conformations for self-assembly.〈/p〉

    Description: 〈p〉Defective nuclear lamina protein lamin A is associated with premature aging. Casein kinase 2 (CK2) binds the nuclear lamina, and inhibiting CK2 activity induces cellular senescence in cancer cells. Thus, it is feasible that lamin A and CK2 may cooperate in the aging process. Nuclear CK2 localization relies on lamin A and the lamin A carboxyl terminus physically interacts with the CK2α catalytic core and inhibits its kinase activity. Loss of lamin A in 〈i〉Lmna〈/i〉-knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) confers increased CK2 activity. Conversely, prelamin A that accumulates in 〈i〉Zmpste24〈/i〉-deficent MEFs exhibits a high CK2α binding affinity and concomitantly reduces CK2 kinase activity. Permidine treatment activates CK2 by releasing the interaction between lamin A and CK2, promoting DNA damage repair and ameliorating progeroid features. These data reveal a previously unidentified function for nuclear lamin A and highlight an essential role for CK2 in regulating senescence and aging. 〈/p〉
