    Notes: An approach for the numerical solution of flow problems based on the concept of fundamental solutions of differential equations is described. This approach uses the finite element methodology but does not rely on the concept of variational principle or that of residuals. The approach is shown to be well-suited for many types of flow problems. Various applications of this approach are discussed in this paper, with particular emphasis placed on the solution of potential flows and viscous flows containing appreciable regions of separation.

    Notes: Finite element solutions of the primitive equation (PE) form of the shallow water equations are notorious for the severe spurious 2Δx modes which appear. Wave equation (WE) solutions do not exhibit these numerical modes. In this paper we show that the severe spurious modes in PE solutions are strongly influenced by essential normal flow boundary conditions in the coupled continuity-momentum system of equations. This is demonstrated through numerical examples that avoid the use of essential normal flow boundary conditions either by specifying elevation values over the entire boundary or by implementing natural flow boundary conditions in the weak weighted residual form of the continuity equation. Results from a series of convergence tests show that PE solutions are of nearly the same quality as WE solutions when spurious modes are suppressed by alternative specification of the boundary conditions. Network intercomparisons indicate that varying nodal support does not excite spurious modes in a solution, although it does enhance the spurious modes introduced when an essential normal flow boundary condition is used.Dispersion analysis of discrete equations for interior and boundary nodes offers an explanation of the observed solution behaviour. For certain PE algorithms a mixed situation can arise where the boundary nodes exhibit a monotonic (noise-free) dispersion relationship and the interior nodes exhibit a folded (noisy) dispersion relationship. We have found that the mixed situation occurs when all boundary nodes are specified elevation nodes (which are enforced as essential conditions in the continuity equation) or when specified flow boundary nodes are treated as natural boundary conditions in the continuity equation. In either case the effect is to generate a solution that is essentially free of noise. Apparently, the monotonic dispersion behaviour at the boundaries suppresses the otherwise noisy behaviour caused by the folded dispersion relation on the interior.

    Notes: The severe restrictions of the Babuška-Brezzi stability criteria permit only a limited number of interpolations for velocities (displacements) and pressure to be used for incompressible behaviour. These restrictions preclude the use of many useful elements. We show in this paper how such difficulties can be side-stepped by seeking the steady state solution through the use of various time marching schemes. This permits a simple iterative approach to incompressible (or nearly incompressible) problems of fluid mechanics or solid mechanics and provides a stimulus for the use of such procedures in metal forming flow, etc.

    Notes: In such local phenomena as shocks and boundary layers, etc, the discretization errors are directional and the use of elongated elements is obvious if economy is to be achieved. Although facilities for local mesh elongation have been incorporated into earlier codes in generating unstructured meshes, these do not permit the use of very high stretch ratios required for the analysis of such problems as boundary layers. Here the use of locally introduced structured meshes has been practised involving much manual interaction and loss of error control. In the paper we present a procedure which achieves the combination of such locally structured meshes with a general unstructured mesh generator in an automatic and fully adaptive manner. The procedure is illustrated in the context of compressible, viscous and inviscid, flows but has obvious applications in other (solid mechanics) problems involving localization.

    Notes: This note presents a rational basis for a unified finite element algorithm capable of dealing with a wide range of fluid flow in both steady and transient cases. It is hoped that empiricism inherent in many previous approaches can be avoided and a sound basis provided. The algorithm permits the use of equal interpolation for all variables by avoiding the need for the Babuska-Brezzi constraints in regions where the flow is nearly incompressible.The success of the algorithm, which here is written for the non-conservative equation form, is demonstrated on several examples ranging from (nearly) incompressible through transonic regions to supersonic flows. Up to mild shocks such as those occurring in the examples presented in this paper, no 'artificial' viscosity is added at any stage.The algorithm extends some concepts introduced in an earlier paper.

    Notes: A modification has been introduced to the new superconvergent patch derivative recovery technique recently developed (Zienkiewicz and Zhu, 1991). By use of a locally normalized co-ordinate system, the application of this technique can now be applied to higher-order finite-element shape functions. Numerical studies are carried out for up to 6th-order elements in one dimension and for up to quartic elements in two dimensions, and superconvergent results are obtained for all examples tested.

    Notes: A methodology for the automatic mesh generation of quadrilateral elements is proposed. The methodology is based on the facts that (i) a region can always be subdivided entirely into quadrilaterals if the polygon which forms the boundary of the region has an even number of sides, (ii) a quadrilateral can be formed by two triangles which share a common side. By taking advantage of the techniques developed in an existing automatic triangular mesh generator, quadrilateral meshes can be generated according to the distribution of user specified element size over the domain of interest. In particular, an automatic quadrilateral mesh generator based on the advancing front technique for triangular mesh generation1 is described. Techniques to improve the quality of the generated quadrilateral meshes are introduced. The robustness and versatility of the mesh generator are demonstrated by a variety of examples.
