Beschreibung: Local adaptation is critical for species persistence in the face of rapid environmental change, but its genetic basis is not well understood. Growing the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana in field experiments in four sites across the species' native range, we identified candidate loci for local adaptation from a genome-wide association study of lifetime fitness in geographically diverse accessions. Fitness-associated loci exhibited both geographic and climatic signatures of local adaptation. Relative to genomic controls, high-fitness alleles were generally distributed closer to the site where they increased fitness, occupying specific and distinct climate spaces. Independent loci with different molecular functions contributed most strongly to fitness variation in each site. Independent local adaptation by distinct genetic mechanisms may facilitate a flexible evolutionary response to changing environment across a species range.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fournier-Level, A -- Korte, A -- Cooper, M D -- Nordborg, M -- Schmitt, J -- Wilczek, A M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Oct 7;334(6052):86-9. doi: 10.1126/science.1209271.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Brown University, Providence, RI 02912, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21980109" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: It is commonly believed that trees were absent in Scandinavia during the last glaciation and first recolonized the Scandinavian Peninsula with the retreat of its ice sheet some 9000 years ago. Here, we show the presence of a rare mitochondrial DNA haplotype of spruce that appears unique to Scandinavia and with its highest frequency to the west-an area believed to sustain ice-free refugia during most of the last ice age. We further show the survival of DNA from this haplotype in lake sediments and pollen of Trondelag in central Norway dating back ~10,300 years and chloroplast DNA of pine and spruce in lake sediments adjacent to the ice-free Andoya refugium in northwestern Norway as early as ~22,000 and 17,700 years ago, respectively. Our findings imply that conifer trees survived in ice-free refugia of Scandinavia during the last glaciation, challenging current views on survival and spread of trees as a response to climate changes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Parducci, Laura -- Jorgensen, Tina -- Tollefsrud, Mari Mette -- Elverland, Ellen -- Alm, Torbjorn -- Fontana, Sonia L -- Bennett, K D -- Haile, James -- Matetovici, Irina -- Suyama, Yoshihisa -- Edwards, Mary E -- Andersen, Kenneth -- Rasmussen, Morten -- Boessenkool, Sanne -- Coissac, Eric -- Brochmann, Christian -- Taberlet, Pierre -- Houmark-Nielsen, Michael -- Larsen, Nicolaj Krog -- Orlando, Ludovic -- Gilbert, M Thomas P -- Kjaer, Kurt H -- Alsos, Inger Greve -- Willerslev, Eske -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Mar 2;335(6072):1083-6. doi: 10.1126/science.1216043.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Ecology and Genetics, Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22383845" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: The assumption that climatic niche requirements of invasive species are conserved between their native and invaded ranges is key to predicting the risk of invasion. However, this assumption has been challenged recently by evidence of niche shifts in some species. Here, we report the first large-scale test of niche conservatism for 50 terrestrial plant invaders between Eurasia, North America, and Australia. We show that when analog climates are compared between regions, fewer than 15% of species have more than 10% of their invaded distribution outside their native climatic niche. These findings reveal that substantial niche shifts are rare in terrestrial plant invaders, providing support for an appropriate use of ecological niche models for the prediction of both biological invasions and responses to climate change.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Petitpierre, Blaise -- Kueffer, Christoph -- Broennimann, Olivier -- Randin, Christophe -- Daehler, Curtis -- Guisan, Antoine -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Mar 16;335(6074):1344-8. doi: 10.1126/science.1215933.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Ecology and Evolution, University of Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22422981" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: The processes that shaped modern European mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation remain unclear. The initial peopling by Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers ~42,000 years ago and the immigration of Neolithic farmers into Europe ~8000 years ago appear to have played important roles but do not explain present-day mtDNA diversity. We generated mtDNA profiles of 364 individuals from prehistoric cultures in Central Europe to perform a chronological study, spanning the Early Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (5500 to 1550 calibrated years before the common era). We used this transect through time to identify four marked shifts in genetic composition during the Neolithic period, revealing a key role for Late Neolithic cultures in shaping modern Central European genetic diversity.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4039305/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4039305/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brandt, Guido -- Haak, Wolfgang -- Adler, Christina J -- Roth, Christina -- Szecsenyi-Nagy, Anna -- Karimnia, Sarah -- Moller-Rieker, Sabine -- Meller, Harald -- Ganslmeier, Robert -- Friederich, Susanne -- Dresely, Veit -- Nicklisch, Nicole -- Pickrell, Joseph K -- Sirocko, Frank -- Reich, David -- Cooper, Alan -- Alt, Kurt W -- Genographic Consortium -- R01 GM100233/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Oct 11;342(6155):257-61. doi: 10.1126/science.1241844.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Institute of Anthropology, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany. brandtg@uni-mainz.de〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24115443" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: This Review presents basic facts regarding the long-run evolution of income and wealth inequality in Europe and the United States. Income and wealth inequality was very high a century ago, particularly in Europe, but dropped dramatically in the first half of the 20th century. Income inequality has surged back in the United States since the 1970s so that the United States is much more unequal than Europe today. We discuss possible interpretations and lessons for the future.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Piketty, Thomas -- Saez, Emmanuel -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 May 23;344(6186):838-43. doi: 10.1126/science.1251936.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Economics, Paris School of Economics, Paris, France. thomas.piketty@psemail.eu. ; Department of Economics, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24855258" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Large-bodied suspension feeders (planktivores), which include the most massive animals to have ever lived, are conspicuously absent from Mesozoic marine environments. The only clear representatives of this trophic guild in the Mesozoic have been an enigmatic and apparently short-lived Jurassic group of extinct pachycormid fishes. Here, we report several new examples of these giant bony fishes from Asia, Europe, and North America. These fossils provide the first detailed anatomical information on this poorly understood clade and extend its range from the lower Middle Jurassic to the end of the Cretaceous, showing that this group persisted for more than 100 million years. Modern large-bodied, planktivorous vertebrates diversified after the extinction of pachycormids at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, which is consistent with an opportunistic refilling of vacated ecospace.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Friedman, Matt -- Shimada, Kenshu -- Martin, Larry D -- Everhart, Michael J -- Liston, Jeff -- Maltese, Anthony -- Triebold, Michael -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2010 Feb 19;327(5968):990-3. doi: 10.1126/science.1184743.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉University of Chicago, 1025 East 57th Street, Chicago, IL 60637, USA. mattf@earth.ox.ac.uk [corrected]〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20167784" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: For more than 30 years, the relationship between net primary productivity and species richness has generated intense debate in ecology about the processes regulating local diversity. The original view, which is still widely accepted, holds that the relationship is hump-shaped, with richness first rising and then declining with increasing productivity. Although recent meta-analyses questioned the generality of hump-shaped patterns, these syntheses have been criticized for failing to account for methodological differences among studies. We addressed such concerns by conducting standardized sampling in 48 herbaceous-dominated plant communities on five continents. We found no clear relationship between productivity and fine-scale (meters(-2)) richness within sites, within regions, or across the globe. Ecologists should focus on fresh, mechanistic approaches to understanding the multivariate links between productivity and richness.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Adler, Peter B -- Seabloom, Eric W -- Borer, Elizabeth T -- Hillebrand, Helmut -- Hautier, Yann -- Hector, Andy -- Harpole, W Stanley -- O'Halloran, Lydia R -- Grace, James B -- Anderson, T Michael -- Bakker, Jonathan D -- Biederman, Lori A -- Brown, Cynthia S -- Buckley, Yvonne M -- Calabrese, Laura B -- Chu, Cheng-Jin -- Cleland, Elsa E -- Collins, Scott L -- Cottingham, Kathryn L -- Crawley, Michael J -- Damschen, Ellen I -- Davies, Kendi F -- DeCrappeo, Nicole M -- Fay, Philip A -- Firn, Jennifer -- Frater, Paul -- Gasarch, Eve I -- Gruner, Daniel S -- Hagenah, Nicole -- Hille Ris Lambers, Janneke -- Humphries, Hope -- Jin, Virginia L -- Kay, Adam D -- Kirkman, Kevin P -- Klein, Julia A -- Knops, Johannes M H -- La Pierre, Kimberly J -- Lambrinos, John G -- Li, Wei -- MacDougall, Andrew S -- McCulley, Rebecca L -- Melbourne, Brett A -- Mitchell, Charles E -- Moore, Joslin L -- Morgan, John W -- Mortensen, Brent -- Orrock, John L -- Prober, Suzanne M -- Pyke, David A -- Risch, Anita C -- Schuetz, Martin -- Smith, Melinda D -- Stevens, Carly J -- Sullivan, Lauren L -- Wang, Gang -- Wragg, Peter D -- Wright, Justin P -- Yang, Louie H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Sep 23;333(6050):1750-3. doi: 10.1126/science.1204498.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Wildland Resources and the Ecology Center, Utah State University, 5230 Old Main, Logan, UT 84322, USA. peter.adler@usu.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21940895" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Climate variations influenced the agricultural productivity, health risk, and conflict level of preindustrial societies. Discrimination between environmental and anthropogenic impacts on past civilizations, however, remains difficult because of the paucity of high-resolution paleoclimatic evidence. We present tree ring-based reconstructions of central European summer precipitation and temperature variability over the past 2500 years. Recent warming is unprecedented, but modern hydroclimatic variations may have at times been exceeded in magnitude and duration. Wet and warm summers occurred during periods of Roman and medieval prosperity. Increased climate variability from ~250 to 600 C.E. coincided with the demise of the western Roman Empire and the turmoil of the Migration Period. Such historical data may provide a basis for counteracting the recent political and fiscal reluctance to mitigate projected climate change.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Buntgen, Ulf -- Tegel, Willy -- Nicolussi, Kurt -- McCormick, Michael -- Frank, David -- Trouet, Valerie -- Kaplan, Jed O -- Herzig, Franz -- Heussner, Karl-Uwe -- Wanner, Heinz -- Luterbacher, Jurg -- Esper, Jan -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Feb 4;331(6017):578-82. doi: 10.1126/science.1197175. Beschreibung: Understanding the genetic bases and modes of adaptation to current climatic conditions is essential to accurately predict responses to future environmental change. We conducted a genome-wide scan to identify climate-adaptive genetic loci and pathways in the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Amino acid-changing variants were significantly enriched among the loci strongly correlated with climate, suggesting that our scan effectively detects adaptive alleles. Moreover, from our results, we successfully predicted relative fitness among a set of geographically diverse A. thaliana accessions when grown together in a common environment. Our results provide a set of candidates for dissecting the molecular bases of climate adaptations, as well as insights about the prevalence of selective sweeps, which has implications for predicting the rate of adaptation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hancock, Angela M -- Brachi, Benjamin -- Faure, Nathalie -- Horton, Matthew W -- Jarymowycz, Lucien B -- Sperone, F Gianluca -- Toomajian, Chris -- Roux, Fabrice -- Bergelson, Joy -- GM083068/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Oct 7;334(6052):83-6. doi: 10.1126/science.1209244.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Ecology and Evolution, University of Chicago, 1101 East 57th Street, Chicago, IL 60637, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21980108" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Despite an overall advancement in breeding area arrival, one of the latest spring arrivals in northwest Europe since 1950 of several trans-Saharan songbird species occurred in 2011. Year-round tracking of red-backed shrikes and thrush nightingales revealed that the cause of the delay was a prolongation of stopover time during spring migration at the Horn of Africa, which was affected by extreme drought. Our results help to establish a direct link at the individual level between changes in local climate during migration and arrival and breeding condition in Europe thousands of kilometers further north.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tottrup, A P -- Klaassen, R H G -- Kristensen, M W -- Strandberg, R -- Vardanis, Y -- Lindstrom, A -- Rahbek, C -- Alerstam, T -- Thorup, K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Dec 7;338(6112):1307. doi: 10.1126/science.1227548.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Center for Macroecology, Evolution, and Climate, University of Copenhagen, Universitetsparken 15, DK-2100 Copenhagen, Denmark. aptottrup@bio.ku.dk〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23224549" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: In mountainous regions, climate warming is expected to shift species' ranges to higher altitudes. Evidence for such shifts is still mostly from revisitations of historical sites. We present recent (2001 to 2008) changes in vascular plant species richness observed in a standardized monitoring network across Europe's major mountain ranges. Species have moved upslope on average. However, these shifts had opposite effects on the summit floras' species richness in boreal-temperate mountain regions (+3.9 species on average) and Mediterranean mountain regions (-1.4 species), probably because recent climatic trends have decreased the availability of water in the European south. Because Mediterranean mountains are particularly rich in endemic species, a continuation of these trends might shrink the European mountain flora, despite an average increase in summit species richness across the region.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Pauli, Harald -- Gottfried, Michael -- Dullinger, Stefan -- Abdaladze, Otari -- Akhalkatsi, Maia -- Benito Alonso, Jose Luis -- Coldea, Gheorghe -- Dick, Jan -- Erschbamer, Brigitta -- Fernandez Calzado, Rosa -- Ghosn, Dany -- Holten, Jarle I -- Kanka, Robert -- Kazakis, George -- Kollar, Jozef -- Larsson, Per -- Moiseev, Pavel -- Moiseev, Dmitry -- Molau, Ulf -- Molero Mesa, Joaquin -- Nagy, Laszlo -- Pelino, Giovanni -- Puscas, Mihai -- Rossi, Graziano -- Stanisci, Angela -- Syverhuset, Anne O -- Theurillat, Jean-Paul -- Tomaselli, Marcello -- Unterluggauer, Peter -- Villar, Luis -- Vittoz, Pascal -- Grabherr, Georg -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Apr 20;336(6079):353-5. doi: 10.1126/science.1219033.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Institute of Mountain Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences, c/o University of Vienna, 1030 Wien, Austria.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22517860" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Excessive nutrient loading is a major threat to aquatic ecosystems worldwide that leads to profound changes in aquatic biodiversity and biogeochemical processes. Systematic quantitative assessment of functional ecosystem measures for river networks is, however, lacking, especially at continental scales. Here, we narrow this gap by means of a pan-European field experiment on a fundamental ecosystem process--leaf-litter breakdown--in 100 streams across a greater than 1000-fold nutrient gradient. Dramatically slowed breakdown at both extremes of the gradient indicated strong nutrient limitation in unaffected systems, potential for strong stimulation in moderately altered systems, and inhibition in highly polluted streams. This large-scale response pattern emphasizes the need to complement established structural approaches (such as water chemistry, hydrogeomorphology, and biological diversity metrics) with functional measures (such as litter-breakdown rate, whole-system metabolism, and nutrient spiraling) for assessing ecosystem health.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Woodward, Guy -- Gessner, Mark O -- Giller, Paul S -- Gulis, Vladislav -- Hladyz, Sally -- Lecerf, Antoine -- Malmqvist, Bjorn -- McKie, Brendan G -- Tiegs, Scott D -- Cariss, Helen -- Dobson, Mike -- Elosegi, Arturo -- Ferreira, Veronica -- Graca, Manuel A S -- Fleituch, Tadeusz -- Lacoursiere, Jean O -- Nistorescu, Marius -- Pozo, Jesus -- Risnoveanu, Geta -- Schindler, Markus -- Vadineanu, Angheluta -- Vought, Lena B-M -- Chauvet, Eric -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Jun 15;336(6087):1438-40. doi: 10.1126/science.1219534.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Zoology, Ecology and Plant Science, University College Cork, National University of Ireland, Cork, Enterprise Centre, Distillery Fields, Cork, Ireland. g.woodward@qmul.ac.uk〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22700929" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Although an African origin of the modern human species is generally accepted, the evolutionary processes involved in the speciation, geographical spread, and eventual extinction of archaic humans outside of Africa are much debated. An additional complexity has been the recent evidence of limited interbreeding between modern humans and the Neandertals and Denisovans. Modern human migrations and interactions began during the buildup to the Last Glacial Maximum, starting about 100,000 years ago. By examining the history of other organisms through glacial cycles, valuable models for evolutionary biogeography can be formulated. According to one such model, the adoption of a new refugium by a subgroup of a species may lead to important evolutionary changes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Stewart, J R -- Stringer, C B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Mar 16;335(6074):1317-21. doi: 10.1126/science.1215627.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉School of Applied Sciences, Bournemouth University, Talbot Campus, Poole, Dorset, UK. jstewart@bournemouth.ac.uk〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22422974" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Suggestions of collapse in small herbivore cycles since the 1980s have raised concerns about the loss of essential ecosystem functions. Whether such phenomena are general and result from extrinsic environmental changes or from intrinsic process stochasticity is currently unknown. Using a large compilation of time series of vole abundances, we demonstrate consistent cycle amplitude dampening associated with a reduction in winter population growth, although regulatory processes responsible for cyclicity have not been lost. The underlying syndrome of change throughout Europe and grass-eating vole species suggests a common climatic driver. Increasing intervals of low-amplitude small herbivore population fluctuations are expected in the future, and these may have cascading impacts on trophic webs across ecosystems.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Cornulier, Thomas -- Yoccoz, Nigel G -- Bretagnolle, Vincent -- Brommer, Jon E -- Butet, Alain -- Ecke, Frauke -- Elston, David A -- Framstad, Erik -- Henttonen, Heikki -- Hornfeldt, Birger -- Huitu, Otso -- Imholt, Christian -- Ims, Rolf A -- Jacob, Jens -- Jedrzejewska, Bogumila -- Millon, Alexandre -- Petty, Steve J -- Pietiainen, Hannu -- Tkadlec, Emil -- Zub, Karol -- Lambin, Xavier -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Apr 5;340(6128):63-6. doi: 10.1126/science.1228992.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉School of Biological Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Zoology Building, Tillydrone Avenue, Aberdeen AB24 2TZ, UK. cornulier@abdn.ac.uk〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23559246" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Debate on the ancestry of Europeans centers on the interplay between Mesolithic foragers and Neolithic farmers. Foragers are generally believed to have disappeared shortly after the arrival of agriculture. To investigate the relation between foragers and farmers, we examined Mesolithic and Neolithic samples from the Blatterhohle site. Mesolithic mitochondrial DNA sequences were typical of European foragers, whereas the Neolithic sample included additional lineages that are associated with early farmers. However, isotope analyses separate the Neolithic sample into two groups: one with an agriculturalist diet and one with a forager and freshwater fish diet, the latter carrying mitochondrial DNA sequences typical of Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. This indicates that the descendants of Mesolithic people maintained a foraging lifestyle in Central Europe for more than 2000 years after the arrival of farming societies.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bollongino, Ruth -- Nehlich, Olaf -- Richards, Michael P -- Orschiedt, Jorg -- Thomas, Mark G -- Sell, Christian -- Fajkosova, Zuzana -- Powell, Adam -- Burger, Joachim -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Oct 25;342(6157):479-81. doi: 10.1126/science.1245049. Beschreibung: The geographic and temporal origins of the domestic dog remain controversial, as genetic data suggest a domestication process in East Asia beginning 15,000 years ago, whereas the oldest doglike fossils are found in Europe and Siberia and date to 〉30,000 years ago. We analyzed the mitochondrial genomes of 18 prehistoric canids from Eurasia and the New World, along with a comprehensive panel of modern dogs and wolves. The mitochondrial genomes of all modern dogs are phylogenetically most closely related to either ancient or modern canids of Europe. Molecular dating suggests an onset of domestication there 18,800 to 32,100 years ago. These findings imply that domestic dogs are the culmination of a process that initiated with European hunter-gatherers and the canids with whom they interacted.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Thalmann, O -- Shapiro, B -- Cui, P -- Schuenemann, V J -- Sawyer, S K -- Greenfield, D L -- Germonpre, M B -- Sablin, M V -- Lopez-Giraldez, F -- Domingo-Roura, X -- Napierala, H -- Uerpmann, H-P -- Loponte, D M -- Acosta, A A -- Giemsch, L -- Schmitz, R W -- Worthington, B -- Buikstra, J E -- Druzhkova, A -- Graphodatsky, A S -- Ovodov, N D -- Wahlberg, N -- Freedman, A H -- Schweizer, R M -- Koepfli, K-P -- Leonard, J A -- Meyer, M -- Krause, J -- Paabo, S -- Green, R E -- Wayne, R K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Nov 15;342(6160):871-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1243650.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biology, Section of Genetics and Physiology, University of Turku, Itainen Pitkakatu 4, 20014 Turku, Finland.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24233726" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: The emergent processes driving cultural history are a product of complex interactions among large numbers of individuals, determined by difficult-to-quantify historical conditions. To characterize these processes, we have reconstructed aggregate intellectual mobility over two millennia through the birth and death locations of more than 150,000 notable individuals. The tools of network and complexity theory were then used to identify characteristic statistical patterns and determine the cultural and historical relevance of deviations. The resulting network of locations provides a macroscopic perspective of cultural history, which helps us to retrace cultural narratives of Europe and North America using large-scale visualization and quantitative dynamical tools and to derive historical trends of cultural centers beyond the scope of specific events or narrow time intervals.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Schich, Maximilian -- Song, Chaoming -- Ahn, Yong-Yeol -- Mirsky, Alexander -- Martino, Mauro -- Barabasi, Albert-Laszlo -- Helbing, Dirk -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Aug 1;345(6196):558-62. doi: 10.1126/science.1240064.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉School of Arts and Humanities, The University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson, TX 75080, USA. Beschreibung: The conservation of large carnivores is a formidable challenge for biodiversity conservation. Using a data set on the past and current status of brown bears (Ursus arctos), Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), gray wolves (Canis lupus), and wolverines (Gulo gulo) in European countries, we show that roughly one-third of mainland Europe hosts at least one large carnivore species, with stable or increasing abundance in most cases in 21st-century records. The reasons for this overall conservation success include protective legislation, supportive public opinion, and a variety of practices making coexistence between large carnivores and people possible. The European situation reveals that large carnivores and people can share the same landscape.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chapron, Guillaume -- Kaczensky, Petra -- Linnell, John D C -- von Arx, Manuela -- Huber, Djuro -- Andren, Henrik -- Lopez-Bao, Jose Vicente -- Adamec, Michal -- Alvares, Francisco -- Anders, Ole -- Balciauskas, Linas -- Balys, Vaidas -- Bedo, Peter -- Bego, Ferdinand -- Blanco, Juan Carlos -- Breitenmoser, Urs -- Broseth, Henrik -- Bufka, Ludek -- Bunikyte, Raimonda -- Ciucci, Paolo -- Dutsov, Alexander -- Engleder, Thomas -- Fuxjager, Christian -- Groff, Claudio -- Holmala, Katja -- Hoxha, Bledi -- Iliopoulos, Yorgos -- Ionescu, Ovidiu -- Jeremic, Jasna -- Jerina, Klemen -- Kluth, Gesa -- Knauer, Felix -- Kojola, Ilpo -- Kos, Ivan -- Krofel, Miha -- Kubala, Jakub -- Kunovac, Sasa -- Kusak, Josip -- Kutal, Miroslav -- Liberg, Olof -- Majic, Aleksandra -- Mannil, Peep -- Manz, Ralph -- Marboutin, Eric -- Marucco, Francesca -- Melovski, Dime -- Mersini, Kujtim -- Mertzanis, Yorgos -- Myslajek, Robert W -- Nowak, Sabina -- Odden, John -- Ozolins, Janis -- Palomero, Guillermo -- Paunovic, Milan -- Persson, Jens -- Potocnik, Hubert -- Quenette, Pierre-Yves -- Rauer, Georg -- Reinhardt, Ilka -- Rigg, Robin -- Ryser, Andreas -- Salvatori, Valeria -- Skrbinsek, Tomaz -- Stojanov, Aleksandar -- Swenson, Jon E -- Szemethy, Laszlo -- Trajce, Aleksander -- Tsingarska-Sedefcheva, Elena -- Vana, Martin -- Veeroja, Rauno -- Wabakken, Petter -- Wolfl, Manfred -- Wolfl, Sybille -- Zimmermann, Fridolin -- Zlatanova, Diana -- Boitani, Luigi -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Dec 19;346(6216):1517-9. doi: 10.1126/science.1257553.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Grimso Wildlife Research Station, Department of Ecology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 73091 Riddarhyttan, Sweden. gchapron@carnivoreconservation.org guillaume.chapron@slu.se. ; Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, Savoyenstrasse 1, 1160 Vienna, Austria. ; Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, Post Office Box 5685 Sluppen, 7485 Trondheim, Norway. ; KORA, Thunstrasse 31, 3074 Muri bei Bern, Switzerland. ; Biology Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, Heinzelova 55, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia. ; Grimso Wildlife Research Station, Department of Ecology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 73091 Riddarhyttan, Sweden. ; Grimso Wildlife Research Station, Department of Ecology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 73091 Riddarhyttan, Sweden. Beschreibung: The origin of contemporary Europeans remains contentious. We obtained a genome sequence from Kostenki 14 in European Russia dating from 38,700 to 36,200 years ago, one of the oldest fossils of anatomically modern humans from Europe. We find that Kostenki 14 shares a close ancestry with the 24,000-year-old Mal'ta boy from central Siberia, European Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, some contemporary western Siberians, and many Europeans, but not eastern Asians. Additionally, the Kostenki 14 genome shows evidence of shared ancestry with a population basal to all Eurasians that also relates to later European Neolithic farmers. We find that Kostenki 14 contains more Neandertal DNA that is contained in longer tracts than present Europeans. Our findings reveal the timing of divergence of western Eurasians and East Asians to be more than 36,200 years ago and that European genomic structure today dates back to the Upper Paleolithic and derives from a metapopulation that at times stretched from Europe to central Asia.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Seguin-Orlando, Andaine -- Korneliussen, Thorfinn S -- Sikora, Martin -- Malaspinas, Anna-Sapfo -- Manica, Andrea -- Moltke, Ida -- Albrechtsen, Anders -- Ko, Amy -- Margaryan, Ashot -- Moiseyev, Vyacheslav -- Goebel, Ted -- Westaway, Michael -- Lambert, David -- Khartanovich, Valeri -- Wall, Jeffrey D -- Nigst, Philip R -- Foley, Robert A -- Lahr, Marta Mirazon -- Nielsen, Rasmus -- Orlando, Ludovic -- Willerslev, Eske -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Nov 28;346(6213):1113-8. doi: 10.1126/science.aaa0114. Beschreibung: We present a time-independent gridded earthquake rate forecast for the European region including Turkey. The spatial component of our model is based on kernel density estimation techniques, which we applied to both past earthquake locations and fault moment release on mapped crustal faults and subduction zone interfaces with assigned slip rates. Our forecast relies on the assumption that the locations of past seismicity is a good guide to future seismicity, and that future large-magnitude events occur more likely in the vicinity of known faults. We show that the optimal weighted sum of the corresponding two spatial densities depends on the magnitude range considered. The kernel bandwidths and density weighting function are optimized using retrospective likelihood-based forecast experiments. We computed earthquake activity rates (a- and b-value) of the truncated Gutenberg–Richter distribution separately for crustal and subduction seismicity based on a maximum likelihood approach that considers the spatial and temporal completeness history of the catalogue. The final annual rate of our forecast is purely driven by the maximum likelihood fit of activity rates to the catalogue data, whereas its spatial component incorporates contributions from both earthquake and fault moment-rate densities. Our model constitutes one branch of the earthquake source model logic tree of the 2013 European seismic hazard model released by the EU-FP7 project ‘Seismic HAzard haRmonization in Europe’ (SHARE) and contributes to the assessment of epistemic uncertainties in earthquake activity rates. We performed retrospective and pseudo-prospective likelihood consistency tests to underline the reliability of our model and SHARE’s area source model (ASM) using the testing algorithms applied in the collaboratory for the study of earthquake predictability (CSEP). We comparatively tested our model’s forecasting skill against the ASM and find a statistically significant better performance for testing periods of 10–20 yr. The testing results suggest that our model is a viable candidate model to serve for long-term forecasting on timescales of years to decades for the European region.

Beschreibung: We present a high-resolution palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic study of two cores, MS06 and MS06-SW (6.7 and 1.1 m long, respectively), collected at 72 m below sea level in the Augusta Bay shelf (Eastern Sicily, Ionian Sea, Italy) about 2.3 kmfrom the coastline. Geophysical surveying carried out in the sampling area highlighted the presence of a homogeneous sedimentary sequence that most likely was deposited after the Last Glacial Maximum and was not affected by anthropogenic disturbances. The two cores penetrated a monotonous mud sedimentary sequence, interrupted at ∼3 m depth by a 3–4-cm-thick volcanic sandy layer that is correlated with the tephra fallout deposit produced by the 122 BC plinian eruption of Mt Etna. This tephra, along with radiocarbon dating of nine marine shells and with radioactive tracers for the uppermost 0.3 m (210Pb and 137Cs), provide the chronological constraints for the stratigraphic sequence that resulted younger than 4500 yr BP. Palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic data show that the sample sequence is magnetically homogeneous. A single peak of high magnetic mineral concentration is present and corresponds to the volcanic sandy layer. Palaeomagnetic data allowed the identification of a well-defined characteristic remanent magnetization that provides a high-resolution record of palaeosecular variation (PSV) at the sampling site. The reconstructed PSV curve is in good agreement with the available regional reference PSV curves and with the prediction from recent PSV modelling for Europe. The palaeomagnetic data obtained in this study on the one hand support and refine the age model for the cores, derived from other independent constraints, and on the other hand provide an original high-resolution PSV curve that can serve as a reference for the central Mediterranean over the last 4 ka.

Beschreibung: The Solfatara is one of the major volcanoes of the Phlegrean Fields (Campi Flegrei) volcanic complex, and it is located in a densely populated area a few kilometres west of the city of Naples. It is an active resurgent caldera that has been characterized by a rich history of surface–ground deformation and soil diffuse degassing and fumarolic emissions, which are indications of the top of a hydrothermal plume. A seismic survey was completed in May 2009 for the characterization of the main subsurface features of the Solfatara. Using the complete data set, we have carried out surface wave inversion with high spatial resolution. A classical minimization of a least-squares objective function was first computed to retrieve the dispersion curves of the surface waves. Then, the fitting procedure between the data and a three-sedimentlayer forward model was carried out (to a depth of 7 m), using an improved version of the neighbourhood algorithm. The inversion results indicate a NE-SW fault, which is not visible at the surface. This was confirmed by a temperature survey conducted in 2010. A passive seismic experiment localized the ambient noise sources that correlate well with the areas of high CO2 flux and high soil temperatures. Finally, considering that the intrinsic attenuation is proportional to the frequency, a centroid analysis provides an overview of the attenuation of the seismic waves, which is closely linked to the petrophysical properties of the rock. These different approaches that merge complete active and passive seismic data with soil temperature and CO2 flux maps confirm the presence of the hydrothermal system plume. Some properties of the top of the plume are indicated and localized.

Beschreibung: In this paper, we propose a new model of the crustal structure and seismotectonics for central Sicily (southern Italy) through the analysis of the depth distribution and kinematics of the instrumental seismicity, occurring during the period from 1983 to 2010, and its comparison with individual geological structures that may be active in the area. The analysed data set consists of 392 earthquakes with local magnitudes ranging from 1.0 to 4.7. We defined a new, detailed 1-D velocity model to relocate the earthquakes that occurred in central Sicily, and we calculated a Moho depth of 37 km and a mean VP/VS ratio of 1.73. The relocated seismic events are clustered mainly in the area north of Caltanissetta (e.g. Mainland Sicily) and in the northeastern sector (Madonie Mountains) of the study area; only minor and greatly dispersed seismicity is located in the western sector, near Belice, and along the southern coast, between Gela and Sciacca. The relocated hypocentral distribution depicts a bimodal pattern: 50 per cent of the events occur within the upper crust at depths less than ~16 km, 40 per cent of the events occur within the middle and depth crust, at depths between 16 and 32 km, and the remaining 10 per cent occur at subcrustal depths. The energy release pattern shows a similar depth distribution. On the basis of the kinematic analysis of 38 newly computed focal plane solutions, two major geographically distinct seismotectonic domains are distinguished: the Madonie Mountain domain, with prevalent extensional and extensional-oblique kinematics associated with upper crust Late Pliocene–Quaternary faulting, and the Mainland Sicily domain, with prevalent compressional and compressional-oblique kinematics associated with thrust faulting, at mid to deep crust depth, along the north-dipping Sicilian Basal Thrust (SBT). The stress inversion of the Mainland Sicily focal solutions integrated with neighbouring mechanisms available in the literature highlights a regional homogeneous compressional tensor, with a subhorizontal NNW–SSE-striking σ1 axis. In addition, on the basis of geodetic data, the Mainland Sicily domain may be attributed to the SSE-ward thrusting of the Mainland Sicily block along the SBT plane. Seismogenic shearing along the SBT at mid-crustal depths was responsible for the unexpected Belice 1968 earthquake (Mw 6.1), with evident implications in terms of hazard assessment.
