    How nature shaped echolocation in animals (2021)

    Description: Echolocation has evolved in different groups of animals, from bats and cetaceans to birds and humans, and enables localization and tracking of objects in a dynamic environment, where light levels may be very low or absent. Nature has shaped echolocation, an active sense that engages audiomotor feedback systems, which operates in diverse environments and situations. Echolocation production and perception vary across species, and signals are often adapted to the environment and task. In the last several decades, researchers have been studying the echolocation behavior of animals, both in the air and underwater, using different methodologies and perspectives. The result of these studies has led to rich knowledge on sound production mechanisms, directionality of the sound beam, signal design, echo reception and perception. Active control over echolocation signal production and the mechanisms for echo processing ultimately provide animals with an echoic scene or image of their surroundings. Sonar signal features directly influence the information available for the echolocating animal to perceive images of its environment. In many echolocating animals, the information processed through echoes elicits a reaction in motor systems, including adjustments in subsequent echolocation signals. We are interested in understanding how echolocating animals deal with different environments (e.g. clutter, light levels), tasks, distance to targets or objects, different prey types or other food sources, presence of conspecifics or certain predators, ambient and anthropogenic noise. In recent years, some researchers have presented new data on the origins of echolocation, which can provide a hint of its evolution. Theoreticians have addressed several issues that bear on echolocation systems, such as frequency or time resolution, target localization and beam-forming mechanisms. In this Research Topic we compiled recent work that elucidates how echolocation – from sound production, through echolocation signals to perception- has been shaped by nature functioning in different environments and situations. We strongly encouraged comparative approaches that would deepen our understanding of the processes comprising this active sense.

    Chocolate and Health: Friend or Foe? (2021)

    Description: In the ancient past, cocoa has been appreciated as a high-calorie food to boost energy in soldiers and for its undefined medicinal and mystical properties. During other times, chocolate has been considered as the forbidden “food of God”: a treasure of pleasure for the mind and the soul. The overall perception of the consumer for chocolate was of a “charming” and appealing food with lots of negative aspects related to high sugar content leading to consider chocolate as “junk food” for its “obesigen” calories. Recently, in association with the renewed interest of nutrition science in alternative source of health-promoting foods and ingredients, a large body of research has been conducted to unravel the pro and cons of cocoa in relation to human health. Epidemiological evidences indicate that cocoa consumption helps preventing cardiovascular disease for its high content in bioactive flavonoids. Clinical trials show that chocolate consumption might improve vascular function, decreasing platelet aggregation and display an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect. The putative protective action of cocoa seems to be multi-factorial and involving different aspects of vascular, antioxidant and endothelial function. However, the mechanism(s) that account for the benefits of cocoa it is still unclear. The aim of this Research Topic is therefore to provide the reader with an objective picture of the state of art on the association between cocoa and health, mainly through the evidences of human trials; overwhelmingly considered the golden standard for nutritional science. The Research Topic will cover the analysis of the manufacturing processes of the chocolate and the antioxidant effects in humans as well as the majority of the putative health effects of chocolate and cocoa, such as anti-inflammatory properties, effect on immunity, platelet aggregation, blood pressure, endothelial function and cognitive behavior. Unraveling the functional properties of cocoa will help to understand if the 'food of God' is a primordial gift for the health of mankind.

    Spatial memory - a unique window into healthy and pathological ageing (2021)

    Description: The global population aged over 60 is set to rise dramatically in the coming decades. In many countries, the older population now faces the prospect of spending a quarter of their lives aged over 65, and a significant proportion will have to cope with cognitive decline associated with normal ageing or with dementia disorders. Given that these fundamental demographic changes will pose a significant challenge to health care systems, a detailed understanding of age-related cognitive and neurobiological changes is essential in helping elderly populations maintain cognitive performance. In addition, developing sensitive biomarkers to identify those at risk of developing dementia is crucial for early and effective interventions. To make inferences about the ageing process from the animal model back to the human, rigorous behavioral paradigms must be used to ensure that the same function is being examined across species. Given that similar navigational paradigms can easily be applied to humans and animals, recent years have seen an expansion of studies attempting to bridge the gap between age-related changes in animal and human spatial cognition. These studies begin to suggest that disruptions in spatial computations are among the earliest indicators of impending cognitive decline. In addition, although many animal studies have identified pathological mechanisms with paradigms involving spatial navigation, these mechanisms support many nonspatial cognitive functions as well. As a consequence, a successful characterization of how spatial processing changes in the ageing brain could reveal fundamental effects of cognitive ageing that could inform about general mechanisms underlying decline in perception, mnemonic processing and multisensory integration.

    Description: In Hidden Depths, Professor Penny Spikins explores how our emotional connections have shaped human ancestry. Focusing on three key transitions in human origins, Professor Spikins explains how the emotional capacities of our early ancestors evolved in response to ecological changes, much like similar changes in other social mammals. For each transition, dedicated chapters examine evolutionary pressures, responses in changes in human emotional capacities and the archaeological evidence for human social behaviours. Starting from our earliest origins, in Part One, Professor Spikins explores how after two million years ago, movement of human ancestors into a new ecological niche drove new types of collaboration, including care for vulnerable members of the group. Emotional adaptations lead to cognitive changes, as new connections based on compassion, generosity, trust and inclusion also changed our relationship to material things. Part Two explores a later key transition in human emotional capacities occurring after 300,000 years ago. At this time changes in social tolerance allowed ancestors of our own species to further reach out beyond their local group and care about distant allies, making human communities resilient to environmental changes. An increasingly close relationship to animals, and even to cherished possessions, appeared at this time, and can be explained through new human vulnerabilities and ways of seeking comfort and belonging. Lastly, Part Three focuses on the contrasts in emotional dispositions arising between ourselves and our close cousins, the Neanderthals. Neanderthals are revealed as equally caring yet emotionally different humans, who might, if things had been different, have been in our place today. This new narrative breaks away from traditional views of human evolution as exceptional or as a linear progression towards a more perfect form. Instead, our evolutionary history is situated within similar processes occurring in other mammals, and explained as one in which emotions, rather than ‘intellect’, were key to our evolutionary journey. Moreover, changes in emotional capacities and dispositions are seen as part of differing pathways each bringing strengths, weaknesses and compromises. These hidden depths provide an explanation for many of the emotional sensitivities and vulnerabilities which continue to influence our world today.

    Description: The primary objective of this publication is to share with a wider audience the valuable information and extensive dialogue that took place amongst over 140 individuals who attended the second in a series of planned workshops on the science and management of coastal landforms in Massachusetts. This workshop took place at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on January 24, 2001. The individuals who attended this workshop are actively engaged in planning, managing, regulating, engineering, educating, and studying coastal landforms and their beneficial functions. This workshop titled, Can Humans & Coastal Landforms Co-exist?’, was a natural follow-up to a previous workshop, Coastal Landform Management in Massachusetts, held at WHOI October 9-10, 1997 (proceedings published as WHOI Technical Report #WHOI-98-16). The workshop had a very practical, applied focus, providing state-of-the-art scientific understanding of coastal landform function, case history management and regulation of human activities proposed on coastal landforms, a multi-faceted mock conservation commission hearing presented by practicing technical consultants and attorneys that involved all attendees acting as regulators in breakout sessions, and, at the conclusion of the workshop, an open discussion on all issues related to the science and management of coastal landforms, including future research needs.

    Notes: Summary A member of the young PV Alu sub-family is detected in chimpanzee DNA showing that the PV subfamily is not specific to human DNA. This particular Alu is absent from the orthologous loci in both human and gorilla DNAs, indicating that PV subfamily members transposed within the chimpanzee lineage following the divergence of chimpanzee from both gorilla and human. These findings and previous reports describing the transpositional activity of other Alu sequences within the human, gorilla, and chimpanzee lineages provide phylogenetic evidence for the existence of multiple Alu source genes. Sequences surrounding this particular Alu resemble known transcriptional control elements associated with RNA polymerase III, suggesting a mechanism by which cis-acting elements might be acquired upon retrotransposition.

    Notes: Summary A new statistical test has been developed to detect selection on silent sites. This test compares the codon usage within a gene and thus does not require knowledge of which genes are under the greatest selection, that there exist common trends in codon usage across genes, or that genes have the same mutation pattern. It also controls for mutational biases that might be introduced by the adjacent bases. The test was applied to 62 mammalian sequences, the significant codon usage biases were detected in all three species examined (humans, rats, and mice). However, these biases appear not to be the consequence of selection, but of the first base pair in the codon influencing the mutation pattern at the third position.

    Notes: Summary The identification of genetically coherent populations is essential for understanding human evolution. Among the culturally uniform ethnic groups of west Africa, there are two geographically distinct populations with high frequencies of sickle-cell hemoglobin (HbS). Although the HbS mutation in each group is found on distinguishable chromosomes 11, these populations have been assumed to be parts of a single population. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in these populations demonstrated that the two populations identified by alternative chromosomes 11 bearing HbS have distinct distributions of mitochondrial genotypes, i.e., they are maternally separate. These studies also showed that, contrary to expectation, the mtDNA of some individuals is heteroplasmic. For nuclear loci, a comparison of the frequency of alternative alleles established that these populations are genetically distinct. Both the mitochondrial and nuclear data indicate that these populations have been separate for approximately 50,000 years. Although HbS in the two populations is usually attributed to recent, independent mutations, the duration of the separation and the observed geographic distribution of the population allow for the possibility of an ancient origin of HbS. Assuming an ancient mutation and considering the known biogeography, we suggest that HbS protected selected populations from malaria in rain forest refuges during the most recent ice age.

    Notes: Abstract This assessment focuses on the concentrations of some chemicals present in theAgaricus bisporus mushroom, the cancer-inducing doses of these chemicals or mushroom used in the animal experiments, the total amounts of these chemicals or mushroom needed to induce cancer in these mice, and the estimated total amounts of these chemicals or mushroom needed to induce cancer in humans. By adding the estimated amounts of chemicals needed to induce cancer and by comparing it with the amount of raw mushroom needed to induce the same effect, it becomes obvious that we have accounted for less than 2% of the carcinogenic components of theAgaricus bisporus mushroom. Since some unavailable data handicapped this assessment, it should be regarded as tentative and subject to further adjustment.

Instead, prominent semiannual rhythms are found, with equinoctial troughs and solsticial peaks. A prominent semiannual environmental event is the magnetic disturbance induced by the solar wind. The semiannual magnetic disturbances are worldwide, but most pronounced in the auroral zones where the corpuscular radiation enters the atmosphere. Magnetic indices that predominantly reflect these events were obtained from the literature and correlated with the melatonin and conception data. Significant and inverse correlations were found for Inuit conceptions and the melatonin data. The correlations obtained for 48 contiguous states of the United States indicated that only the extreme northern states exhibited this relationship. These data were compared with a previous correlational study in the United States which established that sunshine was correlated with conceptions in the middle latitude and southern states. An hypothesis of dual control by electromagnetic and magnetic energies is proposed: melatonin is a progonadal hormone in humans controlled by both factors, depending on their relative strength. Other studies are reviewed regarding the possible factors involved in determining the annual pattern of human conceptions. Demographic studies of geographic variation in temporal patterns of conceptions, with particular regard to variations of the magnetic fields on the earth's surface, may provide some insight into the efficacy of these different factors.

    Notes: In Fortführung der Versuche über phosphinhaltige Kobaltcarbonyle hat sich ergeben, daß der Reaktionsverlauf von der speziellen Art des Phosphins, d. h. den am Phosphor gebundenen organischen Resten, abhängt. So entstehen mit Triäthyl- und Tricyclohexyl-phosphin bevorzugt (ca. 10°) die 2-ionigen Verbindungen [Co(CO)3L2][Co(CO)4] (L = P(C2H5)3, P(C6H11)3); nur bei höherer Temperatur (ca. 35°) und in indifferenten Mitteln bildet sich das betr. echte Derivat des Kobaltcarbonyls [Co(CO)3L]2, das mit Triphenylphosphin auch schon bei tieferer Temperatur entsteht. Häufig liegen Gemische beider Verbindungstypen vor.  -  Mit Triphenyl-arsin und -stibin sind die gleichfalls bei tieferer Temperatur (0°) gebildeten 2-ionigen Verbindungen nur labil und wandeln sich spontan unter CO-Abgabe in die echten Derivate um.  -  Ergänzende weitere Versuche wurden mit Mangancarbonyl und der 2-zähligen Base Äthylen-bis-[diphenylphosphin] und mit Rheniumcarbonyl und Triphenylphosphin durchgeführt. Im letzteren Fall erhält man das diamagnetische Monosubstitutionsprodukt [Re(CO)4P(C6H5)3]2.

Im letzteren System sind N-Methyl-acet-arylide und o-Acyloxy-N.N-dimethyl-arylamine die Hauptprodukte, wobei das N-Acyloxy-anilinium-Ion als Zwischenstufe angenommen wurde19). Bei der Umsetzung des N.N-Dimethyl-p-toluidins mit Dibenzoylperoxyd in Chloroform wird die „Phenolumlagerung“ lediglich durch die basenkatalysierte Entmethylierung unterdrückt; im sauren Milieu tritt sie auf.  -  Der quantitative Produktvergleich in den Systemen N.N-Dimethyl-p-chloranilin + Diacetylperoxyd und N.N-Dimethyl-p-chloranilin-oxyd + Acetanhydrid lehrt, daß die Äquivalenz nicht vollständig ist. Im ersten System existiert noch ein unabhängiger Entmethylierungsweg, an welchem Radikale beteiligt zu sein scheinen; in Styrol oder Cumol als Lösungsmittel ging die Ausbeute am Entmethylierungsprodukt zurück.

    Notes: Es wird gezeigt, daß die seit langem bekannte Dismutation des Glyoxals zu Glykolsäure zur Darstellung von Schwermetallglykolaten verwendet werden kann. Sowohl die Hydroxyde als auch die Carbonate von Kobalt(II) und Nickel(II) werden von siedenden, wäßrigen Glyoxallösungen unter Bildung von Kobalt(II)-glykolat bzw. Nickel(II)-glykolat gelöst. Unter gleichen Bedingungen kann auch Eisen(III)-hydroxyd in Eisen(II)-glykolat übergeführt werden, wobei der Dismutation eine Reduktion von Eisen(III) durch Glyoxal vorausgeht. Der gemessene Paramagnetismus der festen Glykolate dieser Metalle zeigt, daß es sich um Anlagerungskomplexe handelt.

    Notes: Bei der Kondensation von Dihydroresorcin mit β-Brom-α-keto-buttersäure wurde 2-Methyl-4-oxo-4.5.6.7-tetrahydro-cumaron-carbonsäure-(3) erhalten. Entsprechend ergab die Kondensation mit α-Chlor-acetessigester 3-Methyl-4-oxo-4.5.6.7-tetrahydro-cumaron-carbonsäure-(2). Die Übertragung dieser Reaktion auf 1-Methyl-cyclohexandion-(3.5) lieferte 3.6-Dimethyl-4-oxo-4.5.6.7-tetrahydro-cumaron-carbonsäure-(2), die mit Cinchonidin in die optischen Antipoden gespalten wurde. Die Decarboxylierung der linksdrehenden Säure führte zum Evodon, aus dem mittels Wolff-Kishner-Reduktion Menthofuran gewonnen wurde.

    Notes: Während P4S5 bei der Umsetzung mit flüssigem Ammoniak bei -33° pro Molekel insgesamt sechs Molekeln NH3 unter Bildung der Ammoniumverbindung (NH4)3[P4S5(NH2)3] aufnimmt, werden bei der Reaktion von P4S3 entsprechend der Abnahme der Zahl der P-S-P-Bindungen unter den gleichen Bedingungen nur noch vier Molekeln Ammoniak gemäß der Bildung von (NH4)2[P4S3(NH2)2] umgesetzt. Bei 150-180° gehen etwa 60% dieser Verbindung über definierte ammoniakärmere Zwischenstufen wieder in P4S3 über:.In den übrigen 40% läßt sich durch abwechselndes Aufkondensieren von Ammoniak und Erwärmen auf 275° der Schwefel sukzessive durch NH-Gruppen ersetzen, wobei schließlich eine in flüssigem Ammoniak schwerlösliche Verbindung anfällt, die der Zusammensetzung P4(NH)3 nahekommt. Diese unterliegt oberhalb von 280°, besonders schnell oberhalb von 400°, der Disproportionierung gemäß:.

    Notes: Die Addukte von Dehydrobenzol an Cyclopentadien und Furan (II und IV) sind thermisch stabil und lassen sich nicht reversibel in ihre Ausgangskomponenten aufspalten. Auf Grund der Reaktivität ihrer C=C—Bindung im Fünfring sind sie aber befähigt, ihrerseits mit Dienen im Sinne einer DIELS-ALDER-Anlagerung Umsetzungen einzugehen. Da die aus IV mit Anthracen, Pentacen, Acridin und Phenazin erhaltenen Addukte mit Acetanhydrid und Salzsäure zu Benzotriptycen VI, Tribenzotriptycen X bzw. den Iso-aza-triptycen-Derivaten XII und XIV zu dehydratisieren sind, eröffnet sich damit ein neuer Weg, Naphthalin über seine 2.3-Kohlenstoffatome mit Dien-Systemen zu verknüpfen. Abschließend wird über eine schon bei Raumtemperatur vor sich gehende Anlagerung von IV an 2.5-Diphenyl-3.4-benzofuran berichtet.

    Notes: Durch Reduktion von D-Glucuron mit Natriumamalgam entsteht außer D-Glucose und L-Gulose als Hauptprodukt die bisher unbekannte D-gluco-Hexodialdose. Nach chromatographischer Abtrennung wird die Dialdose kristallisiert als Monohydrat erhalten. Einige ihrer Reaktionen und Derivate werden beschrieben. Die Dialdose wird von Hefe nicht vergoren.  -  Die zur Amalgam-Reduktion von Onsäure-lactonen optimale Acidität wird zweckmäßig (statt durch Zugaben von Schwefelsäure) durch Pufferung mit Natriumhydrogenoxalat eingehalten.

    Notes: Aus dem Verhalten der 2-Fluor-Derivate der D-Fructose〈2.6〉 und denen der 1-Methyl-D-fructose〈2.6〉 ergibt sich, daß in den stark negativ drehenden Derivaten die Substituenten an C-2 in cis-Stellung zur Hydroxylgruppe an C-3 und bei den schwach negativ oder positiv drehenden die Substituenten an C-2 in trans-Stellung zu dieser Gruppe stehen. Da für die furanoiden Zuckerderivate die Drehungsrichtungen der α- und der β-Formen analog denen der pyranoiden sind, muß demgemäß für den Rohrzucker (Saccharose) die cis-Stellung des α-D-Glucosyl-Restes zum C-3-Hydroxyl der Fructose-Komponente als bewiesen angesehen werden.

    Notes: 5-Nitrosamino-1.2.4-thiodiazole geben beim Stehenlassen oder Erhitzen in Wasser oder Alkoholen in einer allgemeinen, säurekatalysierten Reaktion Diazoamino-thiodiazole (Triazene). Unter besonderen Bedingungen können daneben oder stattdessen Azoxy-thiodiazol, Hydroxy-thiodiazol, und  -  bei Benzol als Lösungsmittel  -  Phenyl-thiodiazol entstehen. Durch Umsetzungen dieser Art in Gegenwart von verschiedenen Amino-thiodiazolen und anschließende qualitative und quantitative Analyse der gebildeten Triazene wurde bewiesen, daß die Reaktion zwischen zwei Molekülen Nitrosamin, nicht zwischen Nitrosamin und Amin stattfindet. Glatte Bildung von Triazen erfolgte ferner bei der Umsetzung von Diazoäther mit Nitrosamin.  -  Einige Eigenschaften der weitgehend säurebeständigen und kupplungsunfähigen Diazoamino-thiodiazole werden beschrieben.

    Notes: Bei den „isomeren“ Gluconsäurenitrilen von P. E. PAPADAKIS und H. J. COHEN handelt es sich um ein und dieselbe Substanz. Das aus Eisessig erhaltene Nitril schmilzt höher und „mutarotiert“ nicht, weil es durch Spuren von Säure stabilisiert ist. Die anomale zeitliche Änderung der Drehung von Gluconsäurenitril in wäßriger Lösung wird durch den Ablauf zweier Reaktionen erklärt: einerseits wird das Nitril irreversibel über das Amid zu Ammoniumgluconat verseift; anderseits dissoziiert das Nitril reversibel in Arabinose und HCN.

Das Perchlorat ergibt bei der Einwirkung von Natriumhydrogencarbonat-Lösung ein kristallines Kondensationsprodukt aus 2 Molekeln der primär entstandenen Pseudobase.

Statt dessen reagiert das intermediär gebildete D-Mannosan α〈1.5〉β〈1.2〉 (II) mit α- und β-D-Mannose unter Bildung von α.α- und α.β-1.1-Dimannose (VI und VII), zwei Disacchariden vom Trehalosetyp. Darüber hinaus bilden sich durch weitere Reaktionen von II mit VI und VII Oligosaccharide verschiedenen Polymerisationsgrades, von denen bisher ein Trisaccharid isoliert wurde.

    Notes: Bei der Kondensation von Dicarbonylverbindungen und o-Amino-phenol entstehen zunächst Bis-benzoxazolyle, welche sich unter dem Einfluß von Metallsalzen oder Alkalien in die Hydroxyanile umlagern und Metallkomplexe bilden. Während mit Schwermetallsalzen des Kupfers, Kobalts, Urans, Nickels die Umlagerung und Komplexbildung schon in saurem Medium verläuft, werden Erdalkalikomplexe nur gebildet, wenn vorher die Umlagerung zu den isomeren Hydroxyanilen in alkalischem Medium ausgeführt wird. Mittels IR-Spektren, UV-Spektren und Hydrierungen wird die Oxazolin-Hydroxyanil-Umlagerung einiger Komplexbildner studiert.

    Notes: Die Sonderstellung des 2-Amino-4.5-trimethylen-thiazols (IV) gegenüber Derivaten mit größerem carbocyclischem Ring wird untersucht. Es wird gezeigt, daß in dem schon beschriebenen Hydrat von IV das Wasser unter Aufhebung des Thiazolsystems chemisch gebunden ist. Die Struktur des Adduktes entspricht einem bisher unbekannten Zwischenprodukt der Thiazolringsynthese. Seine wahrscheinliche Bildungsweise wird besprochen.

    Notes: Durch Schmidt-Abbau, anschließende Verseifung und Papierchromatographie der erhaltenen Amine kann man stellungsisomere Carbonylverbindungen nebeneinander nachweisen. Wenn man den Schmidt-Abbau der Carbonylverbindungen mit der äquivalenten Menge an Stickstoffwasserstoffsäure und bei niederen Temperaturen durchführt, stören dabei Alkohole nicht. Bei höheren Temperaturen werden sekundäre und primäre Alkohole und auch Olefine unter gleichzeitiger Isomerisierung zu Schiffschen Basen abgebaut. Mittels dieser Methode wurde bestätigt, daß im Temperaturbereich um 130° der Sauerstoff-Angriff auf n-Heptan, n-Nonan und n-Octadecan statistisch erfolgt.

    Notes: Die vier isomeren Ketocapronsäure-äthylester wurden dem Schmidt-Abbau unterworfen. Die Abbauprodukte wurden papierchromatographisch getrennt und identifiziert.  -  n-Capronsäure-methylester wurde bei 130° autoxydiert, die Oxocapronsäure-methylester wie oben abgebaut. Es konnte eine α-, eine γ- und eine δ-Oxydation nachgewiesen werden. Daß auch eine β-Oxydation stattfindet, ergab sich aus dem Nachweis von Methyl-n-propylketon.  -  Die Versuche zeigen, daß der Sauerstoffangriff auf die Ester normalkettiger Carbonsäuren ungefähr statistisch an allen sekundären C - H-Bindungen erfolgt.

    Notes: D-Glucuron-mercaptale werden in gut kristallisierte 2.4.5-Tribenzoyl-D-glucuron-mercaptale übergeführt. Daraus gewinnt man durch Abspalten von Mercaptan das 2.4.5-Tribenzoyl-al-D-glucuron, das als p-Nitro-phenylhydrazon charakterisiert wird. Durch Behandeln der D-Glucuron-mercaptale mit Benzaldehyd und Chlorwasserstoff erhält man 2.4-Benzyliden-D-glucuron-mercaptale, die durch Reduktion mit LiBH4 2.4-Benzyliden-D-glucose-mercaptale, durch Abspalten von Mercaptan das 2.4-Benzyliden-D-glucuron ergeben. Letzteres läßt sich mit LiBH4 zum 2.4-Benzyliden-D-sorbit reduzieren. Durch Behandeln der D-Glucuron-mercaptale mit Acetaldehyd und Chlorwasserstoff gewinnt man 2.4-Äthyliden-D-glucuron-mercaptale. Daraus kann man in Analogie zu den entsprechenden Benzylidenverbindungen die 2.4-Äthyliden-D-glucose-mercaptale und das 2.4-Äthyliden-D-glucuron gewinnen, dessen Struktur durch Überführen in den 1.3.5.6-Tetraacetyl-2.4-äthyliden-D-sorbit bewiesen wird.

    Notes: Aus den Samen von Lupinus polyphillus L. haben wir neben den bereits bekannten Alkaloiden Lupanin (I) und Hydroxy-lupanin (II) zwei neue Verbindungen isoliert und deren Struktur aufgeklärt. Die eine Verbindung ist offensichtlich identisch mit dem auch von F. GALINOVSKY und Mitarbb. isolierten, als „Angustifolin“ bezeichneten Alkaloid. Die Struktur des Angustifolins ist biogenetisch interessant, da es durch Kondensation mit Formaldehyd in Pufferlösung in Epi-hydroxy-lupanin übergeführt werden kann. Daraus folgt eindeutig die Struktur III für das neue Alkaloid. Bei der zweiten Verbindung handelt es sich um 17-Oxo-lupanin.

    Notes: Die in alkalischer Lösung verlaufende, intramolekulare Disproportionierung von Phenylglyoxal, dessen Wasserstoff in der Aldehydgruppe durch Deuterium ersetzt ist, erfolgt ausschließlich unter intramolekularer Verschiebung des Deuteriums an das C-Atom 2 der entstehenden Mandelsäure. Eine in alkalischen Lösungen von Phenylglyoxal zu beobachtende polarographische Oxydationsstufe wird in Anlehung an den Hydridionen-Verschiebungsmechanismus der Disproportionierungsreaktion als Umladung der Hydridionen zu Protonen gedeutet. Die entsprechende Oxydationsstufe bei anorganischen Hydriden wurde beim Natriumborhydrid gefunden.

    Notes: Diazoalkane werden durch katalytische Mengen Nickelcarbonyl zersetzt. Die Reaktionsprodukte sind identisch mit denen der Zersetzung der Diazoalkane durch elektrophile Katalysatoren. Bringt man jedoch Diazoalkane mit überschüssigem Nickelcarbonyl zur Reaktion, so gelingt es, Carbonylierungsprodukte der Carbene, also Ketene bzw. deren Folgeprodukte, in guten Ausbeuten zu isolieren. Das intermediäre Auftreten von Nickelcarbonyl-Carben-Komplexen wird angenommen.

So wurden hergestellt die Monoäthyl- und Monobutylester der N.N-Diäthyl-aminomethylphosphonsäure, der Monoäthylester der α-Äthylamino-benzylphosphonsäure, ferner die Monoäthyl- und Monooctylester der α-Anilino-benzylphosphonsäure und ihre Eigenschaften beschrieben. Die N-Alkylderivate liegen als Betaine vor, ihre wäßrigen Lösungen sind neutral und sie geben keine Metallsalze. Die N-Arylderivate sind Säuren, die stabile Metallsalze bilden.

    Notes: Acetylcyanid reagiert mit Verbindungen vom Typ des Semicarbazids in 2 n mineralsaurer Lösung zu den entsprechenden Hydrazonen; das Guanylhydrazon läßt sich zum isomeren 1.2.4-Triazinderivat cyclisieren. - β-Ketonitrile bilden mit Hydrazinderivaten der Kohlensäure sogleich Pyrazole, jedoch entsteht mit 2-Phenyl-thiosemicarbazid nur das offenkettige Hydrazon. γ-Ketonitrile zeigen keine Tendenz zur Ringbildung.

Die aus den Addukten und ihren Hydrierungsprodukten durch Reduktion mit Lithiumalanat erhaltenen Alkohole werden beschrieben. - Bei der Hydrolyse der Addukte aus halogenierten Acrylsäuren und Cyclopentadien entstehen neben einfachen Hydroxysäuren Verbindungen, die zu zwei isomeren Nortricyclen-monocarbonsäuren führen.

Reaktionen dieses Typus werden durch die α-Chlorsubstitution des Aldehyds stark begünstigt.
