Description: The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the ‘Great Trek’ (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Forming the concept of the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. The frieze is unique in that it provides rare evidence of the complex processes followed in creating a major monument. Based on unpublished documents, drawings and models, these processes are unfolded step by step, from the earliest discussions of the purpose and content of the frieze through all the stages of its design to its shipping to post-war Italy to be copied into marble and final installation in the Monument. The book examines how visual representation transforms historical memory in what it chooses to recount, and the forms in which it depicts this. It also investigates the active role the Monument played in the development of apartheid, and its place in post-apartheid heritage.

Description: The book is a rare case study of the dynamics, processes and shifts around the creation and reading of one of the world’s major monuments, through all the processes of its design and making. The frieze which represents the Great Trek and Voortrekker occupation of South Africa (1835-52) is one of the largest of its kind. The key question is how, a century later, were eighteen years of Voortrekker memory transformed into a 92-metre marble frieze?

Notes: Abstract Let ℋ be a locally finite system of hyperplanes in ℝ d with the property that the cells of the induced cell complex decomposition ℐ of ℝ d have uniformly bounded diameters. If ℋ is simple and the density of the vertices in ℐ exists, then the density of thek-cells in ℐ exists and can be given explicitly (k = 1, ...,d). Also, the mean number ofj-faces of thek-cells in ℐ exists and can be calculated. For certain nonsimple systems ℋ, corresponding inequalities are obtained.

Notes: Abstract Precise asymptotic formulae are obtained for the expected number ofk-faces of the orthogonal projection of a regularn-simplex inn-space onto a randomly chosen isotropic subspace of fixed dimension or codimension, as the dimensionn tends to infinity.

Notes: Abstract The convex body K is called a p-tangential body of the convex body $$\bar K$$ if $$\bar K \subseteq K$$ and every (n−p−1)-extremal support plane of K is also a support plane of ¯K. It has been conjectured by Minkowski and proved by Bol that 1-tangential bodies of balls are characterized by the case of equality in one of the Minkowski inequalities for the quermassintegrals. This fact, together with a geometric description of the support of the surface area function Sp(K,·) of order p which was obtained earlier by the author, is used to prove some new characterizations of p-tangential bodies. For instance, an n-dimensional convex body K is a p-tangential body of a ball (for some p∈{0,..., n−2}) if, and only if, its surface area functions Sp (K,·) and Sn−1 (K,·) are constant multiples of each other.
