    Description: We present new viscosity measurements for melts spanning a wide range of anhydrous compositions including: rhyolite, trachyte, moldavite, andesite, latite, pantellerite, basalt and basanite. Micropenetration and concentric cylinder viscometry measurements cover a viscosity range of 10−1 to 1012 Pas and a temperature range from 700 to 1650 °C. These new measurements, combined with other published data, provide a high-quality database comprising ∼800 experimental data on 44 well-characterized melt compositions. This database is used to recalibrate the model proposed by Giordano and Dingwell [Giordano, D., Dingwell, D. B., 2003a. Non-Arrhenian multicomponent melt viscosity: a model. Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 208, 337–349] for predicting the viscosity of natural silicate melts. The present contribution clearly shows that: (1) the viscosity (η)–temperature relationship of natural silicate liquids is very well represented by the VFT equation [log η=A+B/ (T−C)] over the full range of viscosity considered here, (2) the use of a constant high-T limiting value of melt viscosity (e.g., A) is fully consistent with the experimental data, (3) there are 3 different compositional suites (peralkaline, metaluminous and peraluminous) that exhibit different patterns in viscosity, (4) the viscosity of metaluminous liquids is well described by a simple mathematical expression involving the compositional parameter (SM) but the compositional dependence of viscosity for peralkaline and peraluminous melts is not fully controlled by SM. For these extreme compositions we refitted the model using a temperature-dependent parameter based on the excess of alkalies relative to alumina (e.g., AE/SM). The recalibrated model reproduces the entire database to within 5% relative error (e.g., RMSE of 0.45 logunits).

    Description: Antarctica’s late Cenozoic (the past ~15 million years) climate history is poorly known from direct evidence, owing to its remoteness, an extensive sea ice apron, and an ice sheet cover over the region for the past 34 million years. Consequently, knowledge about the role of Antarctica’s ice sheets in global sea level and climate has relied heavily upon interpretations of oxygen isotope records from deep-sea cores. Whereas these isotopic records have revolutionized our understanding of climate-ice-ocean interactions, questions still remain about the specific role of Antarctic ice sheets in global climate. Such questions can be addressed from geological records at the marine margin of the ice sheets, recovered by drilling from floating ice platforms [e.g., Davey et al., 2001; Harwood et al., 2006; Barrett, 2007].

    Description: A stable isotope record from a stalagmite collected from Antro del Corchia cave (Apuan Alps, Central Italy), supported by 17 uranium-series ages, indicates enhanced regional rainfall between ca 8.9 and 7.3 kyr cal. BP at the time of sapropel S1 deposition. Within this phase, the highest rainfall occurred between 7.9 and 7.4 kyr cal. BP. Comparison with different marine and lake records, and in particular with the Soreq Cave record (Israel), suggests substantial in-phase occurrence of enhanced rainfall between the Western and Eastern Mediterranean basins. There is no convincing evidence for major climatic change at the time of the “8.2 kyr event”.

    Description: We have processed thirty Global Positioning System (GPS) campaigns carried out at Etna from 1994 to early 2001 between the last two main flank eruptions of the Mt. Etna (Sicily, Italy). This rest period allowed us to investigate the deep magma plumbing system of the Mt. Etna. The temporal dynamics of twenty-three points observed three times or more were analyzed. All the time series show a first-order linear trend during the five years period. It suggests that the volcano was continuously deformed by the action of a deep source while a discrete activity of the volcano was observed at the summit. We have interpreted the residual deformation field as the result of an major eastward motion of the eastern flank of the volcano.

    Description: This chapter summarizes a comparative study of shear-wave velocity models and seismic sources in the Campanian volcanic areas of Vesuvius and Phlegraean Fields. These velocity models were obtained through the nonlinear inversion of surfacewave tomography data, using as a priori constraints the relevant information available in the literature. Local group velocity data were obtained by means of the frequency–time analysis for the time period between 0.3 and 2 s and were combined with the group velocity data for the time period between 10 and 35 s from the regional events located in the Italian peninsula and bordering areas and two station phase velocity data corresponding to the time period between 25 and 100 s. In order to invert Rayleigh wave dispersion curves, we applied the nonlinear inversion method called hedgehog and retrieved average models for the first 30–35km of the lithosphere, with the lower part of the upper mantle being kept fixed on the basis of existing regional models. A feature that is common to the two volcanic areas is a low shear velocity layer which is centered at the depth of about 10 km, while on the outside of the cone and along a path in the northeastern part of the Vesuvius area this layer is absent. This low velocity can be associated with the presence of partial melting and, therefore, may represent a quite diffused crustal magma reservoir which is fed by a deeper one that is regional in character and located in the uppermost mantle. The study of seismic source in terms of the moment tensor is suitable for an investigation of physical processes within a volcano; indeed, its components, double couple, compensated linear vector dipole, and volumetric, can be related to the movements of magma and fluids within the volcanic system. Although for many recent earthquake events the percentage of double couple component is high, our results also show the presence of significant non-double couple components in both volcanic areas.

    Description: Viscosity of hydrous trachytes from the Agnano Monte Spina eruption (Phlegrean Fields, Italy) has been determined at 1.0 GPa and temperatures between 1200 and 1400 °C using the falling sphere method in a piston cylinder apparatus. The H2O content in the melts ranged from 0.18 to 5.81 wt.%. These high-temperature hydrous viscosities, along with previous ones determined at low-temperature (anhydrous and hydrous) and at high-temperature (anhydrous), at 1 atm on the same melt composition, represent the only complete viscosity data set available for K-trachyticmelts, frommagmatic to volcanic conditions.Viscosity decreases with increasing temperature andwater content in the melt.At constant temperature, viscosity appears to significantly decreasewhen the first wt.% ofH2Ois added.At H2O content higher than 3 wt.% the effect of temperature on viscosity is slight. Moreover, the deviation from Arrhenian behaviour towards greater “fragility” occurs with increasing water content. We combined low- and high-temperature viscosities (also from literature) and parameterized themby the use of a modified Vogel–Fulcher–Tamman equation, which accommodates the non-Arrhenian temperature dependence ofmelt viscosity.Moreover, in order to explore the extent to which the improved knowledge of Agnano Monte Spina trachyte viscosity may affect simulation of volcanic eruption at Phlegrean Fields, we included our viscosity models in numerical simulations of magma flow and fragmentation along volcanic conduits. These simulations show that the new parameterizations (and hence the new equations) give stronger predictions in the temperature interval relevant for magmatic and eruptive processes.

    Description: The viscosity of shoshonitic melts from Vulcanello Peninsula (Vulcano Island, Italy) is experimentally determined at temperatures between 733 K and 1673 K. The water content of the melts varies from 0.03 to 4.75 wt% H2O. The micropenetration technique is employed at ambient pressure in the high viscosity range (109-1012 Pa·s). Falling sphere(s) experiments are performed at 500 and 2000 MPa in the low viscosity range (100.5-103 Pa·s). Results show a decrease of about 2 orders of magnitude in viscosity if ~ 3 wt% of water is added to the dry melt at 1300 K. At high temperature the viscosity of Vulcanello melts is intermediate between that of andesitic and basaltic melts. In contrast, at low temperatures (≤1050 K), the shoshonitic melt is characterized by a lower viscosity with respect to the two previous melts. Based on our new data set, a calculation model is proposed to predict the viscosity of the shoshonitic melts as a function of temperature and water content. The viscosity data are used to constrain the ascent velocity of shoshonitic magmas from Vulcanello within dikes. Using petrological data (temperature and crystal content of the magma) and volcanological information (geometrical parameters of the eruptive fissure and depth of magma storage), we estimate the time scale for the ascent of magma from the main reservoir to the surface. Results show time scales in the order of hours to few days. We conclude that the rapid ascent of poorly evolved melts from Moho depths should be taken into account for the hazard assessment of Vulcano Island.

    Description: Auckland, New Zealand is unique in being a metropolitan area built on an active volcanic field. Despite the small size and intensity of Auckland eruptions, the risk from tephra fall is high because of the high density of buildings and lifelines. The nature of this threat can be evaluated by comparisons with historical Strombolian and Hawaiian eruptions, which have occurred in non-populated areas. Cone-building phases of such eruptions are typically protracted, i.e., weeks to months in duration, prolonging the period during which emergency managers will have to fine tune mitigation for numerous parameters such as fluctuations in intensity and wind shifts. Rapid cone growth during future eruptions will define a region of some 30 to 100 ha where complete destruction will occur on a time scale of hours. The cost of this destruction is likely to range between NZ$200M and NZ$1.4B (ca. US$130M to US$900M). Beyond this, we have modeled the cumulative long-term effect of the build-up of a downwind blanket of lapilli and ash by estimating accumulation rates for three phases of the 1959 Kīlauea Iki eruption in Hawaii. The effect of changing wind direction was evaluated using low-level wind data from Auckland. These results show that intervals between 4 and 100 h will lapse before onset of significant damage to buildings.

    Description: Ground-based measurements of stratospheric constituents were carried out from Thule Air Base, Greenland (76.5 N, 68.7 W), during the winters of 2001–2002 and 2002–2003, involving operation of a millimeter-wave spectrometer (GBMS) and a lidar system. This work focuses on the GBMS retrievals of stratospheric O3, CO, N2O, and HNO3, and on lidar stratospheric temperature data obtained during the first of the two winter campaigns, from mid-January to early March 2002. For the Arctic lower stratosphere, the winter 2001–2002 is one of the warmest winters on record. During a large fraction of the winter, the vortex was weakened by the influence of the Aleutian high, with low ozone concentrations and high temperatures observed by GBMS and lidar above 27 km during the second half of February and in early March. At 900 K ( 32 km altitude), the low ozone concentrations observed by GBMS in the Aleutian high are shown to be well correlated to low solar exposure. Throughout the winter, PSCs were rarely observed by POAM III, and the last detection was recorded on 17 January. During the lidar and GBMS observing period that followed, stratospheric temperatures remained above the threshold for PSCs formation throughout the vortex. Nonetheless, using correlations between GBMS O3 and N2O mixing ratios, in early February a large ozone deficiency owing to local ozone loss is noted inside the vortex. GBMS O3-N2O correlations suggest that isentropic transport brought a O3 deficit also to regions near the vortex edge, where transport most likely mimicked local ozone loss.

    Description: The eruptive dynamics of volcanic systems are largely controlled by the viscosity of deforming magma. Here we report the results of a series of high-temperature, high-pressure experiments at conditions relevant for volcanic conduits (250 MPa confining pressure and temperature between 500 °C and 900 °C) that were undertaken to investigate the rheology of magma with crystal fractions varying between 0.5 and 0.8 (50 to 80 wt.%) at different strain-rate conditions. The experiments demonstrate that the presence of crystals increases the relative viscosity (ratio between the viscosity of the mixture and the viscosity of the melt phase) of magmas and additionally induces a decrease of the relative viscosity with increasing strain-rate (shear thinning, non-Newtonian behavior). The experimental results, combined with existing data at low crystal fractions (0–0.3), were used to develop a semi-empirical parameterization that describes the variations of relative viscosity for crystal fractions between 0 and 0.8 and accounts for the complex non-Newtonian rheology of crystal-bearing magmas. The new parameterization, included into numerical models simulating the magma ascent dynamics, reveals that strain-rate-dependent rheology significantly modifies the dynamic behavior inside volcanic conduits, particularly affecting the magma fragmentation conditions.

    Description: In-situ falling-sphere viscometry using shadow radiography in a multianvil apparatus was conducted on a series of samples along the NaAlSi3O8–H2O join up to 2.8 wt.% H2O at the Spring-8 synchrotron radiation facility (Hyogo, Japan). This allowed us to determine viscosities normally too low to be measured at ambient pressure for hydrous silicate melts at high temperatures due to rapid devolatilization. Pressure was fixed at 2.5 GPa for all experiments allowing us to gauge the effect of chemical composition on viscosity. In particular, the series of samples allowed us to vary the melt's degree of polymerization while maintaining a constant Al to Si ratio. Our results show that, for all samples, viscosity decreases as a function of pressure between 1 atm and 2.5 GPa at 1550 °C, indicating that the pressure anomaly can still be observed as depolymerization of the melt increases from nominally 0 (dry albite liquid) to NBO/T=0.8 (assuming water speciation entirely as hydroxyl groups at experimental conditions). We also find that the magnitude of the decrease in viscosity over this pressure interval does not appear to be dependent on the amount of water in the melt (i.e., NBO/T). An explanation for this behavior might be that the molar volume, at least over this limited compositional range, is nearly constant and the effects of compression of these melts, though different in degree of polymerization, are similar.

    Description: The Tindari Fault System (southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) is a regional zone of brittle deformation located at the transition between ongoing contractional and extensional crustal compartments and lying above the western edge of a narrow subducting slab. Onshore structural data, an offshore seismic reflection profile, and earthquake data are analyzed to constrain the present geometry of the Tindari Fault System and its tectonic evolution since Neogene, including the present seismicity. Results show that this zone of deformation consists of a broad NNW trending system of faults including sets of right-lateral, left-lateral, and extensional faults as well as early strike-slip faults reworked under late extension. Earthquakes and other neotectonic data provide evidence that the Tindari Fault System is still active in the central and northern sectors and mostly accommodates extensional or rightlateral transtensional displacements on a diffuse array of faults. From these data, a multiphase tectonic history is inferred, including an early phase as a right-lateral strike-slip fault and a late extensional reworking under the influence of the subductionrelated processes, which have led to the formation of the Tyrrhenian back-arc basin. Within the present, regional, geodynamic context, the Tindari Fault System is interpreted as an ongoing accommodation zone between the adjacent contractional and extensional crustal compartments, these tectonic compartments relating to the complex processes of plate convergence occurring in the region. The Tindari Fault System might also be included in an incipient, oblique-extensional, transfer zone linking the ongoing contractional belts in the Calabrian-Ionian and southern Tyrrhenian compartments.

    Description: We present a comprehensive processing tool for the real-time analysis of the source mechanism of very long period (VLP) seismic data based on waveform inversions performed in the frequency domain for a point source. A search for the source providing the best-fitting solution is conducted over a three-dimensional grid of assumed source locations, in which the Green’s functions associated with each point source are calculated by finite differences using the reciprocal relation between source and receiver. Tests performed on 62 nodes of a Linux cluster indicate that the waveform inversion and search for the best-fitting signal over 100,000 point sources require roughly 30 s of processing time for a 2-min-long record. The procedure is applied to post-processing of a data archive and to continuous automatic inversion of real-time data at Stromboli, providing insights into different modes of degassing at this volcano

    Description: The Late Pleistocene Albano Maar hosted the most recent volcanic activity of the Colli Albani Volcanic District, represented at nearvent sections by a thick pyroclastic succession of seven units clustered in two main eruptive cycles dated at around 70–68 and 41–36 ka B.P., respectively. Recent stratigraphic investigations allowed us to recognise a pyroclastic succession comprising four eruptive units widely spread in the northeastern sectors of the Colli Albani volcano, up to 15km eastward from the Albano Maar. Integrated tephrostratigraphic, morpho-pedostratigraphic, archaeological, petrological and geochemical analyses enable us to recognise them as distal deposits of the first, third, fifth and seventh Albano Maar eruptions, enlarging significantly their previously supposed dispersion area. Further tephrostratigraphic studies in central Apennine area, allowed us to identify the Albano Maar products in Late Pleistocene deposits of several intermountain basins, extending still further the dispersion area of distal ash fallout as far as 100–120km from the vent. On the basis of the identification and the study of these previously unrecognised mid-distal Albano Maar deposits, a reappraisal of the eruptive scenarios and related energetic parameters is proposed.

    Description: The development and implementation of an earthquake early warning system (EEWS), both in regional or on-site configurations can help to mitigate the losses due to the occurrence of moderate-to-large earthquakes in densely populated and/or industrialized areas. The capability of an EEWS to provide real-time estimates of source parameters (location and magnitude) can be used to take some countermeasures during the earthquake occurrence and before the arriving of the most destructive waves at the site of interest. However, some critical issues are peculiar of EEWS and need further investigation: (1) the uncertainties on earthquake magnitude and location estimates based on the measurements of some observed quantities in the very early portion of the recorded signals; (2) the selection of the most appropriate parameter to be used to predict the ground motion amplitude both in near-and far-source ranges; (3) the use of the estimates provided by the EEWS for structural engineering and risk mitigation applications. In the present study, the issues above are discussed using the Campania–Lucania region (Southern Apennines) in Italy, as test-site area. In this region a prototype system for earthquake early warning, and more generally for seismic alert management, is under development. The system is based on a dense, wide dynamic accelerometric network deployed in the area where the moderate-to-large earthquake causative fault systems are located. The uncertainty analysis is performed through a real-time probabilistic seismic hazard analysis by using two different approaches. The first is the Bayesian approach that implicitly integrate both the time evolving estimate of earthquake parameters, the probability density functions and the variability of ground motion propagation providing the most complete information. The second is a classical point estimate approach which does not account for the probability density function of the magnitude and only uses the average of the estimates performed at each seismic station. Both the approaches are applied to two main towns located in the area of interest, Napoli and Avellino, for which a missed and false alarm analysis is presented by means of a scenario earthquake: an M 7.0 seismic event located at the centre of the seismic network. Concerning the ground motion prediction, attention is focused on the response spectra as the most appropriate function to characterize the ground motion for earthquake engineering applications of EEWS.

    Description: SKS splitting at the Calabrian subduction zone, with delay times (δt) up to 3s, reveals the presence of a strong anisotropic fabric. Fast directions (ϕ) are oriented NNE-SSW in the Calabrian Arc (C.A.) and rotate NNW-SSE to the north following the arcuate shape of the subducting plate. We interpret the trench-parallel ϕ as local-scale mantle flow driven by the retrograde motion of the slab; the absence of trench perpendicular ϕ below the Southern Apennines (S.A.) excludes the presence of a seismically detectable return flow at its NE edge. This may be due to the relative youth and limited width of the S.A. slab tear. A possible return flow is identified farther north at the boundary of the S.A. and Central Apennines. Different and weaker anisotropy is present below the Apulian Platform (A.P.). This implies that the influence of the slab rollback in the sub-slab mantle is limited to less then 100 km from the slab.

    Description: Video surveillance systems are consolidated techniques for monitoring eruptive phenomena in volcanic areas. Along with these systems, which use standard video cameras, people working in this field sometimes make use of infrared cameras providing useful information about the thermal evolution of eruptions. Real-time analysis of the acquired frames is required, along with image storing, to analyze and classify the activity of volcanoes. Human effort and large storing capabilities are hence required to perform monitoring tasks. In this paper we present a new strategy aimed at improving the performance of video surveillance systems in terms of human-independent image processing and storing optimization. The proposed methodology is based on real-time thermo-graphic analysis of the area considered. The analysis is performed by processing images acquired with an IR camera and extracting information about meaningful volcanic events. Two software tools were developed. The first provides information about the activity being monitored and automatically adapts the image storing rate. The second tool automatically produces useful information about the eruptive activity encompassed by a selected frame sequence. The software developed includes a suitable user interface allowing for convenient management of the acquired images and easy access to information about the volcanic activity monitored.

    Description: This study concerns the unstable scarp named Sciara del Fuoco (SDF) at Stromboli volcano, merging geostructural observations, live-cam records in the visible and IR bands, analysis of vertical aerial photographs, and seismic records. These are used to assess morpho-structural changes between 2002 and 2004. The onset of the lava effusion on 28 December, 2002 preceded a gravitational collapse by two days, affecting a wide area of the SDF above and below sea level. We surmise that the collapse enhanced latent instability of the scarp. The 2002–2003 lava flows had a remarkable stabilizing effect on wide portions (〉50%) of the SDF, whilst erosive phenomena continued in the zone not covered by lava. This caused unrelenting regression of the upper landslide scarp toward the summit craters in the form of rockfalls and debris flows. If the crater conduit were involved in the sliding, then a change in eruptive behavior cannot be excluded.

    Description: The development of the 2004–2005 eruption at Etna (Italy) is investigated by means of field surveys to define the current structural state of the volcano. In 2004–2005, a fracture swarm, associated with three effusive vents, propagated downslope from the SE summit crater towards the SE. Such a scenario is commonly observed at Etna, as a pressure increase within the central conduits induces the lateral propagation of most of the dikes downslope. Nevertheless, some unusual features of this eruption (slower propagation of fractures, lack of explosive activity and seismicity, oblique shear along the fractures) suggest a more complex triggering mechanism. A detailed review of the recent activity at Etna enables us to better define this possible mechanism. In fact, the NW–SE-trending fractures formed in 2004–2005 constitute the southeastern continuation of a N–S-trending fracture system which started to develop in early 1998 to the east of the summit craters. The overall 1998–2005 deformation pattern therefore forms an arcuate feature, whose geometry and kinematics are consistent with the head of a shallow flank deformation on the E summit of Etna. Similar deformation patterns have also been observed in analogue models of deforming volcanic cones. In this framework, the 2004–2005 eruption was possibly induced by a dike resulting from the intersection of this incipient fracture system with the SE Crater. A significant acceleration of this flank deformation may be induced by any magmatic involvement. The central conduit of the volcano is presently open, constantly buffering any increase in magmatic pressure and any hazardous consequence can be expected to be limited. A more hazardous scenario may be considered with a partial or total closing of the central conduit. In this case, magmatic overpressure within the central conduit may enhance the collapse of the upper eastern flank, triggering an explosive eruption associated with a landslide reaching the eastern lower slope of the volcano.

    Description: Two unusual, highly explosive flank eruptions succeeded on Mount Etna in July August 2001 and in October 2002 to January 2003, raising the possibility of changing magmatic conditions. Here we decipher the origin and mechanisms of the second eruption from the composition and volatile (H2O, CO2, S, Cl) content of olivine-hosted melt inclusions in explosive products from its south flank vents. Our results demonstrate that powerful lava fountains and ash columns at the eruption onset were sustained by closed system ascent of a batch of primitive, volatile-rich ( 4 wt %) basaltic magma that rose from 10 km depth below sea level (bsl) and suddenly extruded through 2001 fractures maintained opened by eastward flank spreading. This magma, the most primitive for 240 years, probably represents the alkali-rich parental end-member responsible for Etna lavas’ evolution since the early 1970s. Few of it was directly extruded at the eruption onset, but its input likely pressurized the shallow plumbing system several weeks before the eruption. This latter was subsequently fed by the extrusion and degassing of larger amounts of the same, but slightly more evolved, magma that were ponding at 6–4 km bsl, in agreement with seismic data and with the lack of preeruptive SO2 accumulation above the initial depth of sulphur exsolution ( 3 km bsl). We find that while ponding, this magma was flushed and dehydrated by a CO2-rich gas phase of deeper derivation, a process that may commonly affect the plumbing system of Etna and other alkali basaltic volcanoes.

    Description: The experience of several authors has shown that continuous measurements of the gravity field, accomplished through spring devices, are strongly affected by changes of the ambient temperature. The apparent, temperature-driven, gravity changes can be up to one order of magnitude higher than the expected changes of the gravity field. Since these effects are frequency-dependent and instrument-related, they must be removed through non-linear techniques and in a case-by-case fashion. Past studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of a Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm as a tool to reduce continuous gravity sequences for the effect of external temperature changes. In the present work, an upgraded version of this previously employed algorithm is tested against the signal from a gravimeter, which was installed in two different sites over consecutive 96-day and 163-day periods. The better performance of the new algorithm with respect to the previous one is proven. Besides, inferences about the site and/or seasonal dependence of the model structure are reported.

    Description: Ground-based thermal imaging is becoming an increasingly important tool for volcano surveillance, however the impact of volcanic plumes on quantitative measurements of surface temperature has not been previously evaluated. Here we use a radiative transfer model to simulate gas (primarily H2O and SO2) and aerosol absorptions over the path between a thermal camera and a heat source on Stromboli volcano, Italy. A FTIR spectrometer was used to quantify path amounts of gases likely to be encountered when making thermal measurements of the active craters. We find that when using a camera sensitive from 7.5 to 13 mm, underestimates of 400 K may be produced when viewing a source with an actual temperature of 1200 K. Cameras that operate between 3 and 5 mm are somewhat less susceptible to these errors.

    Description: Late on the night of 26 October 2002, a dike intrusion started suddenly at Mount Etna, producing intense explosive activity and lava effusion on the southern flank. Five to six hours afterward, a long field of eruptive fractures propagated radially along the northeastern flank of the volcano, producing marked variations at the permanent tilt network. The dike propagation velocity was inferred by the associated seismicity. We modeled the temporal evolution of the continuously recorded tilt data, both during the vertical dike propagation on the high south flank on 26 October and during the radial propagation along the northeast flank, between 27 and 28 October. The reproduction of the recorded tilt signal allowed us to describe the geometry and characteristics of the two dikes in greater detail than the previous static inversion. We deduced that the eruption was characterized by an unusual composite mechanism, clearly showing a transition from a nearly pure opening mode displacement to a mechanism characterized by an equally strong normal dip-slip component and a smaller left lateral strike-slip component. In this study we demonstrate the interaction between the final segment of the dike and a preexisting structure that was reactivated in response to the intrusion. We show that tilt and its modeling represent a powerful tool to verify and constrain dike intrusions in detail.

    Description: The island of Ischia, located at the northwestern end of the Gulf of Napoli (Italy), is a volcanic area that is historically active (the Arso eruption, in 1302 and the Casamicciola earthquake, in 1883) and has diffuse hydrothermal phenomena. We present in this work a study of the surface deformation occurring in the island, which is based on applying the Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) algorithm referred to as Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) technique. This study is focused on the 1992–2003 time interval and SAR data acquired by the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites from ascending and descending orbits have been used, thus allowing us to discriminate the vertical and east–west components of the displacements. A validation of the DInSAR results has been carried out first by comparing the vertical deformations estimated from the SAR data with those measured from the spirit leveling network that is present in the area. In particular, we computed the difference between the mean vertical deformation velocities estimated from the SAR and the corresponding geodetic measurements along three main leveling lines; the maximum value of the root mean square difference is of about 1 mm/yr. The final discussion is dedicated to the interpretation of the detected displacements, benefiting from the overall information extracted from the ascending and descending DInSAR measurements. In particular, DInSAR data relative to the vertical deformation component show that the present-day subsidence of Ischia mainly develops in areas characterized by active landsliding and along faults; moreover, the deflation of the island, which is recorded by the horizontal displacement component, is probably related to the de-pressurization of the hydrothermal system.

    Description: New major and trace element analyses and Sr-isotope determinations of rocks from Mt. Somma–Vesuvius volcano produced from 25 ky BP to 1944 AD are part of an extensive database documenting the geochemical evolution of this classic region. Volcanic rocks include silica undersaturated, potassic and ultrapotassic lavas and tephras characterized by variable mineralogy and different crystal abundance, as well as by wide ranges of trace element contents and a wide span of initial Sr-isotopic compositions. Both the degree of undersaturation in silica and the crystal content increase through time, being higher in rocks produced after the eruption at 472 AD (Pollena eruption). Compositional variations have been generally thought to reflect contributions from diverse types of mantle and crust. Magma mixing is commonly invoked as a fundamental process affecting the magmas, in addition to crystal fractionation. Our assessment of geochemical and Srisotopic data indicates that compositional variability also reflects the influence of crustal contamination during magma evolution during upward migration to shallow crustal levels and/or by entrapment of crystal mush generated during previous magma storage in the crust. Using a variant of the assimilation fractional crystallization model (Energy Conservation– Assimilation Fractional Crystallization; [Spera and Bohrson, 2001. Energy-constrained open-system magmatic processes I: General model and energy-constrained assimilation and fractional crystallization (EC–AFC) formulation. J. Petrol. 999– 1018]; [Bohrson, W.A. and Spera, F.J., 2001. Energy-constrained open-system magmatic process II: application of energyconstrained assimilation–fractional crystallization (EC–AFC) model to magmatic systems. J. Petrol. 1019–1041]) we estimated the contributions from the crust and suggest that contamination by carbonate rocks that underlie the volcano (2 km down to 9–10 km) is a fundamental process controlling magma compositions at Mt. Somma–Vesuvius in the last 8 ky BP. Contamination in the mid- to upper crust occurred repeatedly, after the magma chamber waxed with influx of new mantle- and crustal-derived magmas and fluids, and waned as a result of magma withdrawal and production of large and energetic plinian and subplinian eruptions.

    Description: In this paper, we discuss the possibility that the North Anatolian fault (NAF) results from the deep deformation of the slab beneath the Bitlis–Hellenic subduction zone. We described the tectonic evolution of the Anatolia–Aegean area in three main steps, before, during and after the formation of the NAF. We remark that the tectonic conditions that are assumed to have triggered the formation of the NAF, i.e. collision to the east and extension to the west, was already achieved before the onset of that strike-slip fault system. We also highlight that the formation of the NAF was accompanied by the uplift of the Turkish–Iranian plateau and by a surge of volcanism in the eastern Anatolia collisional area and probably by the acceleration of the Aegean trench retreat. We show tomographic images from global P-wave model of Piromallo and Morelli [C. Piromallo, A. Morelli, P wave tomography of the mantle under the Alpine–Mediterranean area, J. Geophys. Res. 108 (2003) doi: 10.1029/2002JB001757.] showing that the slab beneath the Bitlis collisional belt is not continuous and that its possible rupture pursues to the west at least up to Cyprus and possibly up to the eastern end of the Hellenic trench. All these observations suggest that the plate tectonic re-organization occurred in the Late Miocene–Early Pliocene in the region results from slab break-off in the Bitlis area and from its lateral propagation to the West. This idea is tested in analogue laboratory experiments, which confirm that the break of the slab under the collisional belt may trigger, (1) the acceleration of slab retreat to the west due to the increase in slab pull force, (2) the indentation of the continent in the collisional area and (3) produce the conditions that permit the lateral escape of material towards the west and the formation of the NAF.

    Description: The westernmost part of the Gulf of Corinth (Greece) is an area of very fast extension (~15 mm/yr according to geodetic measurements) and active normal faulting, accompanied by intense coastal uplift and high seismicity. This study presents geomorphic and biological evidence of Holocene coastal uplift at the western extremity of the Gulf, where such evidence was previously unknown. Narrow shore platforms (benches) and rare notches occur mainly on Holocene littoral conglomerates of uplifting small fan deltas. They are perhaps the only primary paleoseismic evidence likely to provide information on earthquake recurrence at coastal faults in the specific part of the Rift system, whereas dated marine fauna can provide constraints on average Holocene coastal uplift rate. The types of geomorphic and biological evidence identified are not ideal, and there are limitations and pitfalls involved in their evaluation. In a first approach, 5 uplifted paleoshorelines may be indentified, at 0.4- 0.7, 1.0-1.3, 1.4-1.7, 2.0-2.3 and 2.8-3.4 m a.m.s.l. They probably formed after 1728 or 2250 Cal. B.P. (depending on the marine reservoir correction used in the calibration of measured radiocarbon ages). A most conservative estimate for the average coastal uplift rate during the Late Holocene is 1.6 or 1.9 mm/yr minimum (with different amounts of reservoir correction). Part of the obtained radiocarbon ages of Lithophaga sp. allows for much higher Holocene uplift rates, of the order of 3-4 mm/yr, which cannot be discarded given that similar figures exist in the bibliography on Holocene and Pleistocene uplift at neighbouring areas. They should best be cross-checked by further studies though. That the identified paleoshoreline record corresponds to episodes of coastal uplift only, cannot be demonstrated beyond all doubt by independent evidence, but it appears the most likely interpretation, given the geological and active-tectonic context and, what is known about eustatic sea-level fluctuations in the Mediterranean. Proving that the documented uplifts were abrupt (i.e., arguably coseismic), is equally difficult, but reasonably expected and rather probable. Five earthquakes in the last ca. 2000 yrs on the coastal fault zone responsible for the uplift, compare well with historical seismicity and the results of recent on-fault paleoseismological studies at the nearby Eliki fault zone. Exact amounts of coseismic uplift cannot be determined precisely, unless the rate of uniform ("regional") non-seismic uplift of Northern Peloponnesus at the specific part of the Corinth Rift is somehow constrained.

    Description: Despite its impact in understanding oceanic crust formation and eruptive styles of related volcanism, magma dynamics at midocean ridges are poorly known. Here, we propose a new method to assess ascent rates of mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) magmas, as well as their pre- and sin-eruptive dynamics. It is based on the idea that a rising magma can reach a variable degree of both CO2 supersaturation in melt and kinetic fractionation among noble gases in vesicles in relation to its ascent rate through the crust. To quantify the relationship, we have used a model of multicomponent bubble growth in MORB melts, developed by extending the single-component model of Proussevitch and Sahagian [A.A. Proussevitch, D.L. Sahagian, Dynamics and energetics of bubble growth in magmas: analytical formulation and numerical modeling, J. Geophys. Res. 103 (1998), 18223–18251.] to CO2–He–Ar gas mixtures. After proper parameterization, we have applied it to published suites of data having the required features (glasses from Pito Seamount and mid-Atlantic ridges). Our results highlight that the investigated MORB magmas display very different ranges of ascent rates: slow rises of popping rock forming-magmas that cross the crust (0.01–0.5 m/s), slightly faster rates of energetic effusions (0.1–1 m/s), up to rates of 1–10 m/s which fall on the edge between lava effusion and Hawaiian activity. Inside a single plumbing system, very dissimilar magma dynamics highlight the large differences in compressive stress of the oceanic crust on a small scale. Constraints on how the systems of ridges work, as well as the characteristics of the magmatic source, can also be obtained. Our model shows how measurements of both the dissolved gas concentration in melt and the volatile composition of vesicles in the same sample are crucial in recognizing the kinetic effects and definitively assessing magma dynamics. An effort should be made to correctly set the studied samples in the sequence of volcanic submarine deposits where they are collected. Enhanced knowledge of a number of physical properties of gas-bearing MOR magmas is also required, mainly noble gas diffusivities, to describe multicomponent bubble growth at a higher confidence level.

    Description: Viscosity of water-bearing float glass (0.03–4.87 wt% H2O) was measured in the temperature range of 573–1523 K and pressure range of 50–500 MPa using a parallel plate viscometer in the high viscosity range and the falling sphere method in the low viscosity range. Melt viscosity depends strongly on temperature and water content, but pressure up to 500 MPa has only minor influence. Consistent with previous studies on aluminosilicate compositions we found that the effect of dissolved water is most pronounced at low water content, but it is still noticeable at high water content. A new model for the calculation of the viscosities as a function of temperature and water content is proposed which describes the experimental data with a standard deviation of 0.22 log units. The depression of the glass tran- sition temperature Tg by dissolved water agrees reasonably well with the prediction by the model of Deubener [J. Deubener, R. Mu¨ ller, H. Behrens, G. Heide, J. Non-Cryst. Solids 330 (2003) 268]. Using water speciation measured by near-infrared spectroscopy we infer that although the effect of OH groups in reducing Tg is larger than that of H2O molecules, the difference in the contribution of both species is smaller than predicted by Deubener et al. (2003). Compared to alkalis and alkaline earth elements the effect of protons on glass fragility is small, mainly because of the relatively low concentration of OH groups (max. 1.5 wt% water dissolved as OH) in the glasses.

    Description: To visualize the behavior of erupting magma in volcanic conduits, we performed shock tube experiments on the ductile–brittle response of a viscoelastic medium to diffusion-driven bubble expansion. A sample of shear-thinning magma analogue is saturated by gas Ar under high pressure. On rapid decompression, Ar supersaturation causes bubbles to nucleate, grow, and coalesce in the sample, forcing it to expand, flow, and fracture. Experimental variables include saturation pressure and duration, and shape and lubrication of the flow path. Bubble growth in the experiments controls both flow and fracturing, and is consistent with physical models of magma vesiculation. Two types of fractures are observed: i) sharp fractures along the uppermost rim of the sample, and ii) fractures pervasively diffused throughout the sample. Rim fractures open when shear stress accumulates and strain rate is highest at the margin of the flow (a process already inferred from observations and models to occur in magma). Pervasive fractures originate when wall-friction retards expansion of the sample, causing pressure to build-up in the bubbles. When bubble pressure overcomes wall-friction and the tensile strength of the porous sample, fractures open with a range of morphologies. Both types of fracture open normally to flow direction, and both may heal as the flow proceeds. These experiments also illustrate how the development of pervasive fractures allows exsolving gas to escape from the sample before the generation of a permeable network via other processes, e.g., bubble coalescence. This is an observation that potentially impact the degassing of magma and the transition between explosive and effusive eruptions.

    Description: The main results of a hydrogeochemical survey carried out during 2002–2003 along the coast of the south-eastern Sicily, which aimed at geochemical characterization of both groundwater chemistry and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the area are presented. A general frame of chemical processes affecting the studied groundwater and SGD point out that most samples fall within the calcite-anhydrite-dolomite field (CAD). The chemical composition of the samples within the CAD triangle is essentially controlled by calcite, dolomite and gypsum dissolution, which are the main minerals of the carbonate rocks hosting the aquifers. An additional process evidenced in this study is a mixing with seawater. Nitrate is the most typical ion significantly disturbed in the groundwater chemistry influenced by agricultural activities. The strong correlation with SO4 2 indicates that the use of ammonium sulphate fertilisers is widespread in the study area. The K+ vs. NO3 diagram evidences a correlation occurring at lower and higher concentrations, and implies that there is not a common source of both nitrate and potassium, at least on a regional scale. High-phosphate concentration is found in submarine springs along the coast, specifically in the Donnalucata and Avola areas, while its content in inland wells is generally lower. Phosphate is also associated with high-bicarbonate contents in the Donnalucata area, suggesting its possible origin is phosphate-rich carbonate rocks, which are commonly outcropping in the area.

    Description: We estimated the source parameters of 53 local earthquakes (2.0 〈ML 〈 5.7) of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Northeastern Italy) area, recorded by the short-period local seismic network of the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS), in the period 1995–2003. Data were selected on the basis of high quality locations and focal mechanisms. Standard H/V spectral ratios (HVRS) of the three-component stations of the network were performed in order to assess local amplifications, and only stations showing HVRS not exceeding two were considered for the source parameters estimation. Both velocity and acceleration data were used to compute the SH-wave spectra. Observed spectra were corrected for attenuation effects using an independent regional estimate of the quality factor Q and a station dependent estimate of the spectral decay parameter k. Only earthquakes withML 〉 3.0 recorded with a sampling rate of 125 cps were used to compute k, thus allowing to visualize a linear trend of the high frequency acceleration spectrum up to 40–50 Hz. SH-wave spectra, corrected for attenuation, showed an ω−2 shape allowing a good fit with the Brune model. Seismic moments and Brune radii ranged between 1.5 × 1012 and 1.1 × 1017 Nm and between 0.1 and 2.7 km respectively.We obtainedMo = 1.1 × 1017 Nm for the seismic moment of the Kobarid (SLO) main shock, in good agreement with the Harvard CMT solution (Mo = 3.5 × 1017 Nm). Brune stress drops were confined to the range from 0.07 to 5.31MPa, with an average value of 0.73MPa and seem to be approximately constant over five orders of magnitude of seismic moment. Radiated seismic energy computed from two nearby stations scales with seismic moment according to logEs = 1.30 logMo − 9.06, and apparent stress values are between 0.02 and 4.26MPa. The observed scatter of Brune stress drop data allowed to hypothesize a scaling relation Mo ∝ f −3.43 c between seismic moment and corner frequency in order to accommodate both Brune stress drop and apparent stress scalings. No systematic differences are evidenced between stress parameters of earthquakes with different focal mechanisms. As a consequence, a relation of the seismic stress release with the strength of rocks can be hypothesized. A high correlation (r 〉 0.9) of Brune stress drop is found with both apparent stress and RMS stress drop, according to σB = 2.0 σa and σrms = 2.26 σB respectively.

    Description: We analyze observations from eight GPS campaigns carried out between 1997 and 2005 on a network of 13 sites in the Suez–Sinai area, where separation between the African and the Arabian plates takes place. This is the key area to understand if and in which way Sinai behaves like a sub-plate of the African plate and the role played by seismic and geodetic (long-term) deformation release. Our analysis shows that, on average, the Suez–Sinai area motion, in terms of ITRF00 velocities, matches the African plate motion defined by the NNR-NUVEL-1A model. The horizontal principal strain rate axes estimated separately in the Gulf of Suez area and in the northern Sinai vary from compression across the Gulf (−2.2±1.2)×10−8 year−1 to NE extension (1.0±1.5)×10−8 year−1 in the North, showing the presence of two distinct domains, so that in our opinion Sinai cannot be considered simply a unique rigid block. The analysis of GPS baseline length variations shows short-term deformations across the Gulf of Suez, reaching up a maximum value of more than 1 cm in 8 years. Since current geodynamical models do not predict significant tectonic deformation in this area, we work under the hypothesis that a contribute may be expected by post-seismic relaxation effects. Under this hypothesis, we compare the baselines length variations with the post-seismic relaxation field associated with five major local earthquakes occurred in the area, testing two different viscoelastic models. Our results show that the detected short-term deformations are better modeled for viscosity values of 1018 Pa s in the lower crust and 1020 Pa s in the asthenosphere. However, since the modeled post-seismic effect results modest and a certain amount of the detected deformation is not accounted for, we think that an improved modeling should take into account the lateral heterogeneities of crust and upper mantle structures.

    Description: The fruitful collaboration between Italian Research Institutions, particularly Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) together with Marine Engineering Companies, led to the development of NEMOSN- 1, the first European cabled seafloor multiparameter observatory. This observatory, deployed at 2060m w.d. about 12 miles off-shore the Eastern coasts of Sicily (Southern Italy), is in real-time acquisition since January 2005 and addressed to different set of measurements: geophysical and oceanographic. In particular the SN-1 seismological data are integrated in the INGV land-based national seismic network, and they arrive in real-time to the Operative Centre in Rome. In the European Commission (EC) European Seafloor Observatory NETwork (ESONET) project, in connection to the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) action plan, the NEMO-SN-1 site has been proposed as an European key area, both for its intrinsic importance for geo-hazards and for the availability of infrastructure as a stepwise development in GMES program. Presently, NEMO-SN-1 is the only ESONET site operative. The paper gives a description of SN-1 observatory with examples of data.

    Description: This paper presents and discusses the measurement of permeability of Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) samples obtained in the framework of a study concerning the phenomenon of bradyseism, i.e. the slow vertical movement of soil, in the Campi Flegrei caldera (Campania—Italy). Measurements have been performed under isothermal, non-isothermal and transient non-isothermal conditions using a specifically designed apparatus. Results of measurements of porosity of different samples are also reported. Experimental results in isothermal conditions show that the volume flux through the samples changes linearly with applied pressure. The values of permeability obtained turn out to be independent of the temperature and pressure gradients applied to the samples. This result is consistent with the fact that the permeability is a characteristic of the porous medium, and as such is not affected by temperature and pressure variation, at least in the range examined. The permeability values measured in our laboratories agree quite well with the ones measured in situ by the Agenzia Generale Italiana Petroli (AGIP) during a geothermal exploration of the Campi Flegrei area in 1980. An interesting, still unexplained phenomenon has been detected during transient phases when both pressure and temperature gradients were applied to the samples. The phenomenon consists in an enhancement of volume flux due to heat flux in the transient phase. The extra volume-flux disappears once the steady temperature gradient is reached.

    Description: The Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) inflow to the SW Pacific is one of the largest, transporting ~40% of the total input of deep water to the world’s oceans. Here we use a sedimentary record from the giant piston core MD97-2114 collected on the northern flank of the Chatham Rise located at 1935 m water depth, east of New Zealand, to investigate DWBC variability during the Pleistocene epoch when the period of glacial cycles changed progressively from a 41 kyr to 100 kyr rhythm. Magnetic grain-size may be directly related to orbitally forced fluctuations in the strength of the upper circumpolar deep water (UCDW) through its interaction with terrigenous sediments supplied from the south and west. The long-term trends in magnetic properties are characterized by two main perturbations centered at 870 ka (Marine Isotope Stage, MIS 22) 450 ka (MIS 12), which is broadly consistent with the inferred perturbation during the mid-Pleistocene climate transition based on sedimentological paleocurrent reconstruction from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1123 located at 3290 m water depth in the main core of the DWBC flow on the North Chatham Drift. This similarity suggests that both the upper and middle CDW are modulated by similar processes and fluctuations of Antarctic Bottom Water production could be directly responsible for this deep Pacific Ocean inflow variability over the past 1.2 Ma.

    Description: On April 5, 2003, one of the largest eruptions in the last decades was observed at Stromboli volcano, Italy. The eruption occurred in a period of increased volcanic activity, following a first explosion in December 2002, which interrupted the typical moderate “Strombolian” behaviour. We present an exhaustive analysis of the available broadband seismic data and relate them to the observed eruption phases. Prominent features of the seismic signals include an ultra long period signal starting a few tens of seconds prior to the explosive eruption as well as a strong energetic signal a few seconds after the onset of the eruption. Both signals are not exactly synchronized with the other geophysical observations. We present a detailed study of those signals using spectral and particle motion techniques. We estimate eruption parameters and seismic source characteristics by different inversion approaches. Results clearly indicate that the paroxysmal eruption was triggered by a shallow slow thrust-faulting dislocation event with a moment magnitude of Mw=3.0 and possibly associated with a crack that formed previously by dike extrusion. At least one blow-out phase during the paroxysmal explosion could be identified from seismic signals with an equivalent moment magnitude of Mw=3.7 and is represented by a vertical linear vector dipole and two weaker horizontal linear dipoles in opposite direction, plus a vertical force.

    Description: The inner regions of the Antarctic continent are generally regarded as nearly aseismic, although microseismicity is known to occur beneath some outlet ice streams, related to the interaction between the fast flowing ice and the bedrock. Here we show the occurrence of unusual earthquakes beneath an Antarctic outlet glacier that share almost the same magnitude, pointing to the repeated rupture of a single asperity. These seismic events produce waveforms with very high similarity and uncommon spectrum and are tightly clustered in space but, unlike other reported instances of repeating earthquakes on a patch of the San Andreas Fault, they occur in frequent irregular swarms. Evidence locates these events at the rock–ice interface under the glacier, and shows the existence of stick–slip motion on a smaller scale than the large slow slip events detected by global seismographs. Seismic behaviour of large glaciers can presumably be connected to surges in ice motion. This study determines a little known environment for fracture dynamics studies, while also contributing to the understanding of the coupling processes between fast flowing glaciers and bedrock that influence ice stream evolution and stability.

    Description: The performance of a computer program, called Autoscala, for the automatic scaling of foF2 and MUF(3000)F2 from ionograms has been extensively tested. Results of comparisons between automatically and manually scaled data are shown both for Autoscala and for ARTIST (release 4.01). Particular attention has been paid to the cases in which the ionograms have a truncated trace. The problem of the rejection of bad quality ionograms has been also considered. The analysis of data shows that the reliability of values automatically given as output by Autoscala is good. For the data set considered Autoscala seems to operate better than ARTIST.

    Description: This paper deals with the problem of seismicity at Mt. Vesuvius with a view to providing an estimation of the maximum expected earthquake. Integrated analysis of both historical and current seismicity as well as the geological conditions of Vesuvius and the surrounding areas show that seismogenetic structures may fall within the crater axis and at the boundaries of the volcanic complex. While activation of the whole seismogenetic volume detected by seismicity in the past 30 years would indicate a total seismic moment of Mo = 7.1E+ 15 Nm for a magnitude M = 4.5, knowledge of the area's geological structure suggests faulting surfaces of about 32 km2 with an associated magnitude of M = 5.4. The areas of maximum expected damage differ according to the orientation of the hypothesized structure. Analysis of geological and geophysical data and the damage associated to the AD 62 earthquake shows that the prevailing directions in the faulting planes are NE–SW in the eastern sector of the volcanic complex, and roughly WNW–ESE in the southern part of the volcano along the coast. Comparison of instrumental seismicity and historical data reveals two significantly different energy levels: a lower earthquake level with Mmax = 4.5, corresponding to current seismicity and that which accompanied volcanic activity in the eruptive period from 1631–1944; an upper level with Mmax = 5.4, represented by the AD 62 earthquake. The two levels correspond to two stress states and different seismogenetic structures.

    Description: Biomonitoring of magnetic properties of tree leaves has been postulated to be a good approach to measure particulate matter (PM) pollution levels. We studied the variation of magnetic hysteresis parameters on leaves of Quercus ilex, an evergreen oak previously used for magnetic biomonitoring of air pollution in Rome (Italy). The hysteresis parameters (MRS, MS, BCR and BC) measured on specimens collected at a close spacing on the surface of two single leaves show variances that are smaller than those observed on a collection of Q. ilex leaves sampled from several trees distributed along high-traffic roads. The variability is higher for magnetizations than for coercivities. This suggests a uniform source for the magnetic particles, such that variations are due mainly to changes in concentration.     Description: This paper focuses on the role that hydrothermal systems may play in caldera unrest. Changes in the fluid chemistry, temperature, and discharge rate of hydrothermal systems are commonly detected at the surface during volcanic unrest, as hydrothermal fluids adjust to changing subsurface conditions. Geochemical monitoring is carried out to observe the evolving system conditions. Circulating fluids can also generate signals that affect geophysical parameters monitored at the surface. Effective hazard evaluation requires a proper understanding of unrest phenomena and correct interpretation of their causes. Physical modeling of fluid circulation allows quantification of the evolution of a hydrothermal system, and hence evaluation of the potential role of hydrothermal fluids during caldera unrest. Modeling results can be compared with monitoring data, and then contribute to the interpretation of the recent caldera evolution. This paper: 1) describes the main features of hydrothermal systems; 2) briefly reviews numerical modeling of heat and fluid flow through porous media; 3) highlight the effects of hydrothermal fluids on unrest processes; and 4) describes some model applications to the Phlegrean Fields caldera. Simultaneous modeling of different independent parameters has proved to be a powerful tool for understanding caldera unrest. The results highlight the importance of comprehensive conceptual models that incorporate all the available geochemical and geophysical information, and they also stress the need for high-quality, multi-parameter monitoring and modeling of volcanic activity.

    Description: A 2.5-month long gravity sequence, encompassing the starting period of the 2002–2003 Etna eruption and coming from a summit station only 1 km away from the new fractures, is presented and discussed. The sequence comprises four hours-long anomalies that have a great chance to reflect mass redistributions linked to the ensuing activity. In particular, the start of the eruptive activity on the northeastern flank was marked by a gravity decrease as strong as about 400 microGal, which reverted soon afterwards. This strong decrease/increase anomaly is interpreted as the opening, by tectonic forces, of a fracture system along the Northeastern Rift of Mt. Etna, followed by an intrusion of magma from the central conduit to the new fractures. They were used by the intruding magma as a path to the eruptive vents at lower elevations. Afterwards, on three occasions, in November and December 2002, 6–12 h-lasting gravity decreases, with amplitude ranging between 10 and 30 microGal, were observed simultaneously with increases in the amplitude of the volcanic tremor from four seismic stations. A correlation analysis, between the gravity signal and the overall spectral amplitude of each tremor sequence is performed over the 7 November–9 December period. A marked anti-correlation is found over each contemporaneous gravity decrease/tremor increase, while, over the rest of the investigated period, the correlation is negligible. Accordingly, a joint source is inferred to have acted during the occurrence of the three common anomalies. On the grounds of some volcanological observations spanning the period covered by our analysis, we propose the temporary accumulation of a gas cloud at some level within the plumbing system of the volcano to have acted as a joint source. The present work is a further evidence of the potential of continuous gravity observations as a tool to monitor and study active volcanoes and encourages their employment in spite of the difficulty of running spring gravimeters in a continuous fashion under the adverse conditions normally encountered on the summit zone of an active volcano.

    Description: We present a two-stage nonlinear technique to invert strong motions records and geodetic data to retrieve the rupture history of an earthquake on a finite fault. To account for the actual rupture complexity, the fault parameters are spatially variable peak slip velocity, slip direction, rupture time and risetime. The unknown parameters are given at the nodes of the subfaults, whereas the parameters within a subfault are allowed to vary through a bilinear interpolation of the nodal values. The forward modeling is performed with a discrete wave number technique, whose Green’s functions include the complete response of the vertically varying Earth structure. During the first stage, an algorithm based on the heat-bath simulated annealing generates an ensemble of models that efficiently sample the good data-fitting regions of parameter space. In the second stage (appraisal), the algorithm performs a statistical analysis of the model ensemble and computes a weighted mean model and its standard deviation. This technique, rather than simply looking at the best model, extracts the most stable features of the earthquake rupture that are consistent with the data and gives an estimate of the variability of each model parameter. We present some synthetic tests to show the effectiveness of the method and its robustness to uncertainty of the adopted crustal model. Finally, we apply this inverse technique to the well recorded 2000 western Tottori, Japan, earthquake (Mw 6.6); we confirm that the rupture process is characterized by large slip (3-4 m) at very shallow depths but, differently from previous studies, we imaged a new slip patch (2-2.5 m) located deeper, between 14 and 18 km depth.

    Description: The ionospheric community has long been aware that co-operative research on an international basis is essential to deal with temporal and spatial changes in the ionosphere that influence the performance of terrestrial and Earth-space radio systems. The EU COST (Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) 271 Action on "Effects of the Upper Atmosphere on Terrestrial and Earthspace Communications" has had during the period of October 2000-August 2004 the following main objectives: (1) to evaluate the influence of upper atmospheric conditions on terrestrial and Earth-space communications, (2) to develop methods and techniques to improve ionospheric models over Europe for telecommunication and navigation applications and (3) to transfer the results to the appropriate radiocommunication study groups of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) and other national and international organizations dealing with the modern communication systems. At the beginning of 2005 the new 296 Action in the COST Telecommunications, Information Science and Technology domain on "Mitigation of lonospheric Effects on Radio Systems (MIERS)" was approved for the period 2005-2009. The main objectives of the MIERS are: (a) to support and enhance the existing European facilities for historical and real-time digital ionospheric data collection and exchange; (b) to develop an integrated approach to ionospheric modelling, create the mechanism needed to ingest processed data into models, extend and develop suitable mitigation models and define the protocols needed to link models together; and (c) to strengthen the areas of expertise that already exist by stimulating closer cooperation between scientists and users, focusing the scope of all the previous COST ionospheric related studies to the mitigation of ionospheric effects on radio systems. This paper summarises briefly how the major objectives of the COST27l Action have been achieved and what are the most important activities to be undertaken in the follow-on COST296 Action.

    Description: The role of mesoscales on the formation and spreading of water masses in the Western Mediterranean Sea (WMED) is studied with an ocean general circulation model (OGCM). The model is forced with inter- annually variable surface forcing for the years from 1979 to 1999. The simulations are compared with some recent observational studies of the mesoscale processes in the WMED. It is found that the model reproduces the major features of the observed mesoscale variability during the preconditioning of the deep convection in the Gulf of Lions and also the large mesoscale eddies evolution in the Algerian Basin. Thus the model is used to study the deep convection in the Gulf of Lions and the processes of spreading of deep waters after the convection period. The simulations suggest that the flow structure during the preconditioning period is dominated by the Ligurian- Provencal Current in the surface and intermediate layers, which intensifies, meanders and forms a mesoscale vortex over the Rhone fan. In the deep layers the density structures due to the old deep waters tend to organise in (deep) mesoscale cyclonic eddies. The instability of the transition zone between old and newly formed deep waters, which takes place after the violent mixing stages of the deep convection, leads to collapse of the mixed patch and formation of mesoscale eddies. Some of these eddies propagate out of the Gulf of Lions transporting deep waters into the Algerian Basin. The rest of the mesoscale eddies filled with newly formed deep waters remain in the Gulf of Lions, and tend to merge, enlarge and reorganise in an area with two or three large cyclonic eddies. After the cyclonic eddies reach the Algerian Basin they interact with the intense mesoscale field existing there. The model data together with the available satellite SLA data reveal a regular westward propagation of mesoscale eddies in the Northern Algerian Basin. This transport together with southward propagation of mesoscale eddies out of the Gulf of Lions is suggesting that the intermediate and deep waters of the WMED are transported westward by mesoscale eddies. Equivalently we can argue the intermediate and deep waters conveyor belt of the WMED is eddy driven.

    Description: We investigate background seismic activity of the Abruzzo region, a 5000 km2 area located within the Central Apennines of Italy, where in the past 600 years at least 5 large earthquakes (I=XI – X) have occurred. Between April 2003 and September 2004, a dense temporary seismic network composed of 30 digital three-component seismic stations recorded 850 earthquakes with 0.9〈ML〈3.7. We present earthquake locations and focal mechanisms obtained by standard procedures and an optimized velocity model computed with a search technique based on genetic algorithms. The seismicity occurs at a low and constant rate of ~2.6 e-04 events/day*km2 and is sparsely distributed within the first 15 km of the crust. Minor increases in the seismicity rate are related to the occurrence of small and localised seismic sequences that occur at the tip of major active normal faults along secondary structures. We observe that during the 16 months of study period, the Fucino fault system responsible for the 1915 Fucino earthquake (MS=7.0), and the major normal faults of the area, did not produce significant seismic activity. Fault plane solutions evaluated using P-wave polarity data show the predominance of normal faulting mechanisms (~55%) with NE-trending direction of extension coherent with the regional stress field active in this sector of the Apennines. Around 27% of the focal solutions have pure strike-slip mechanisms and the rest shows transtensional faulting mechanisms that mainly characterise the kinematics of the secondary structures activated by the small sequences. We hypothesize that the largest known NW-trending normal faults are presently locked and we propose that in the case of activation, the secondary structures located at their tips may act as transfer faults accommodating a minor part of the extensional deformation with strike-slip motion.

    Description: The Etna 122 BC basaltic eruption had two Plinian phases, each preceded and followed by weak phreatic and phreatomagmatic activity. This study infers changing eruption dynamics from density, grain size, and microtextural data from the erupted pyroclasts. The Plinian clasts show no evidence for quenching by external water; instead, all clasts are microvesicular and have high bubble number densities relative to the products of weaker basaltic explosive eruptions, suggesting that the 122 BC magma underwent coupled degassing linked to rapid ascent and decompression. This coupled degassing was probably enhanced by crystallization of abundant microlites, which increased the magma's effective viscosity during conduit ascent. Detailed measurements of vesicles and microlites show wide variations in number densities, size distributions, and shapes among clasts collected over narrow stratigraphic intervals. For such a diversity of clasts to be expelled together, portions of melt with contrasting ascent and degassing histories must have arrived at the fragmentation surface at essentially the same time. We suggest that a parabolic velocity profile across the conduit ensured that magma near the conduit walls ascended more slowly than magma along the axis, leading to a longer residence time and more advanced degrees of outgassing and crystallization in the marginal magma. In our model, accumulation of this outgassed, viscous magma along conduit walls reduced the effective radius of the shallow conduit and led to blockages that ended the Plinian phases.

    Description: Abstract The long-term behaviour of the plasma frequency of the F2 layer, foF2, is investigated to contribute to the discussion about the natural or anthropogenic origin of the ionospheric long-term changes. In this paper, long time series of hourly foF2 data from two high latitude ionospheric observatories of both the hemispheres are analysed. A decreasing trend of foF2 is found confirming a previous result obtained by using the foF2 monthly medians from Antarctic stations. This negative trend does not show a clear dependence on the long-term behaviour of the geomagnetic activity impact on the ionosphere.

    Description: The Tyrrhenian Sea is an extensional basin opened by trench retreat and back-arc extension during subduction of the Calabrian slab in the last 10–12 My. Subduction is still active beneath the SEmost part of the Tyrrhenian Sea, as testified by seismicity down to 500 km depth. By analyzing seismicity and geodetic data, together with recent tomographic images, we define the present-day situation. An evident N-S compressional regime prevails in the Tyrrhenian region west of the Aeolian archipelago, while east of them a NNW-SSE extension is documented by focal mechanisms and GPS data, with a much smaller strain rate with respect to the past. The transition between these two domains is accommodated by a N-S discontinuity zone which runs from Aeolian Islands to Mt. Etna with an extensional to strike-slip deformation.

    Description: The peculiarity of the quiescent La Fossa volcano is the occurrence of ‘‘crises’’ characterized by strong increases of fumarole T and output and by chemical changes indicative of an increasing input of magmatic fluids. Several surveys carried out during a new ‘‘crisis’’ began in November 2004 indicate that the total diffuse CO2 emission for the crater area increases by one order of magnitude during crises (up to 1600 ton d 1 in December 2005). Concern exists on the possibility that these crises be related to an unrest process leading to eruption. The repetition along decades of the same gas compositional variations during crises, their temporal coincidence with increases of the local shallow seismicity, and the lack of any significant ground motion, rather suggest that they correspond to moments of increasing volatile release from a stationary magma system.

    Description: Geological and structural analyses and ground deformation measurements performed along the eastern portion of the Pernicana fault system and its splay segments allow the structural setting and the kinematic behaviour of the fault to be defined. In addition, the interrelationship between the deformation style of fault segments and the variations of the volcanic pile thickness along the fault strike are investigated using detailed sedimentary basement data. Brittle deformation dominates the N105° fault segment, where the volcanic pile is more than 200 m thick, with the development of a well-defined fault plane characterised by main left-lateral kinematics. The transtensive deformation of the N105° fault is partitioned eastward at Rocca Campana to a main N120° segment. Here, this segment crosses a culmination of the sedimentary basement close to Vena village where the deformation pattern of the thin volcanic pile, less than 100 m thick, is influenced by the more ductile behaviour of the basement generating local short structures with different orientation and kinematics in the southern block of the fault. On the northern one, short E–W trending faults show left-lateral displacements with a minor reverse component on south-dipping planes. This kinematics is related to the oblique orientation of the N120° segment with respect to the seaward motion of the NE flank of Etna. On the whole, the compressive component of the deformation affecting the N120° segment of the Pernicana fault system generates a positive flower structure.

    Description: Continuous soil radon monitoring was carried out near the Southeast Crater (SEC) of Mt. Etna during the 10-day July 2006 Strombolian-effusive eruption. This signal was compared with simultaneously acquired volcanic tremor and thermal radiance data. The onset of explosive activity and a lava fountaining episode were preceded by some hours with increases in radon soil emission by 4–5 orders of magnitude, which we interpret as precursors. Minor changes in eruptive behavior did not produce significant variations in the monitored parameters. The remarkably high radon concentrations we observed are unprecedented in the literature. We interpret peaks in radon activity as due primarily to microfracturing of uranium-bearing rock. These observations suggest that radon measurements in the summit area of Etna are strongly controlled by the state of stress within the volcano and demonstrate the usefulness of radon data acquisition before and during eruptions.

    Description: Dissemination of scientific results to the general public has become increasingly important in our society. When science deals with natural hazards, public outreach is even more important: on the one hand, it contributes to hazard perception and it is a necessary step toward preparedness and risk mitigation; on the other hand, it contributes to establish a positive link of mutual confidence between scientific community and the population living at risk. The existence of such a link plays a relevant role in hazard communication, which in turn is essential to mitigate the risk. In this work, we present a tool that we have developed to illustrate our scientific results on pyroclastic flow propagation at Vesuvius. This tool, a CD-ROM that we developed joining scientific data with appropriate knowledge in communication sciences is meant to be a first prototype that will be used to test the validity of this approach to public outreach. The multimedia guide contains figures, images of real volcanoes and computer animations obtained through numerical modeling of pyroclastic density currents. Explanatory text, kept as short and simple as possible, illustrates both the process and the methodology applied to study this very dangerous natural phenomenon. In this first version, the CD-ROM will be distributed among selected categories of end-users together with a short questionnaire that we have drawn to test its readability. Future releases will include feedback from the users, further advancement of scientific results as well as a higher degree of interactivity.

Vesuvius from 1996 to 2002 at the three-component stations of OVO and BKE. The purpose is to obtain a stable separate estimate of intrinsic and scattering quality factors for shear waves. We investigate in the present paper four frequency bands, centered respectively at fc = 3, 6, 12 and 18 Hz with a bandwidth of 0.6fc. Stacked coda envelopes are fit to the multiple scattering model according to the Zeng approximation in the hypothesis of constant velocity half space. Results show that the diffusion regime is a good approximation as the scattering attenuation (proportional toQ−1 S , the inverse scattering-quality factor) is much stronger than the intrinsic dissipation (proportional to Q−1 I ). Q−1 S decreases with frequency while intrinsic attenuation is much less frequency-dependent. We also fit the stacked coda envelopes at BKE to the diffusion equation solved with the boundary condition of a 2 km thick diffusive layer over a homogeneous half space. Results show that the diffusivity, D, estimated in the assumption of reflecting boundary condition is greater than that estimated in the assumption of uniform half space, whereas the diffusivity estimated with the absorbing boundary condition is close to the estimate done in the assumption of half space. OVO station shows results different from those obtained at BKE and at a group of five stations located on Mt. Vesuvius for the frequency bands centered at 12 and 18 Hz. In these two bands, scattering attenuation at OVO is comparable to the intrinsic dissipation, and is much smaller than that measured at the other stations. We interpret this anomaly as due to an effect of strong lateral heterogeneity which modifies the redistribution of the seismic energy into the coda at OVO. A comparison of the results obtained using passive data (the present data set) and the active data obtained in the same area during TOMOVES experiment by Wegler (2004) show that the diffusivity estimated with shot data during TOMOVES is smaller of a factor greater than 4. This discrepancy is interpreted as due to different earth volumes sampled by the coda waves in the two cases.

    Description: Compositional, textural and experimental data on products from explosive and effusive eruptions of Neapolitan volcanoes (Campi Flegrei and Somma-Vesuvio) allow us to constrain degassing and fragmentation conditions during eruptions of alkaline magmas. Significant differences in compositional and textural features have been recognized between lavas, scoria and pumice resulting respectively from effusive, moderately and extremely explosive eruptions. Pumice samples have highly-vesicular glassy matrix, low microlite number density and moderate to high water content. Crystal Size Distributions (CSD) are steep with high intercept values; the narrow microlite size range indicates single nucleation event. Scoria products are characterized by moderate vesicularity and water content. They have high number density of microlites which are bimodal in size. CSD show distinct inflections that are explained as two crystal populations growing in distinct time. Lava samples generally have low vesicularities, moderate to high microcrystalline groundmass and low glass water content. The comparison between textural and compositional features of natural rocks with samples obtained by decompression experiments allows us to conclude that degassing processes during magma ascent occurs in near-equilibrium conditions even at high decompression rate. Moderate to long magma rise times, calculated in the order of a few days, produce opendegassing responsible formoderately explosive to effusive activity. Shortmagma rise times, calculated in the order of a fewhours, result in closed-system degassing that allow explosive fragmentation when the volume of growing bubble reaches a fixed threshold. Vesicularity and water content measured on matrix glass of pumice indicate that this process occurs at pressure of 10–30 MPa. In these conditions, degassing, fragmentation and in turn the eruptive style is strongly influenced by initial conditions in themagma chamber (volatile content, temperature, pressure) instead of decompression rate, in contrast with that observed for rhyolitic melts. These differences have important consequences in terms of volcanic hazards and risk. The low-viscosity alkaline magma is able tomaintain efficient degassing even during the final stage of magma ascent, favoring, in the case of closed-system, fragmentation and explosive activity.

    Description: Several sites with anomalous emissions of carbon dioxide were investigated in the region south of Mt. Etna volcano in order to assess the types of emission (focused and/or diffuse), their surface extension and the total output of CO2. Most of the studied emissions are located on the southwest boundary of Mt. Etna, near the town of Paternò. They consist of three mud volcanoes (known as Salinelle), one spring with bubbling gas (Acqua Grassa) and one area of diffuse degassing (Peschería). Another site (Naftía Lake) with remarkable gas emissions (bubbling gas into a lake as well as adjacent areas of diffuse soil degassing) is located further southwest of Mt. Etna in an area of extinct Quaternary volcanism on the northwest margin of Hyblean Mts. In all of these areas the origin of the highest CO2 emissions is clearly magmatic, and degassing to the atmosphere occurs mostly through tectonic structures, probably at a regional scale. The magmatic source that feeds anomalous degassing in the above areas is likely to be the same that feeds volcanic activity at Mt. Etna. Focused degassing was measured at each emission vent using devices that measure the air speed, whereas diffuse soil degassing was measured using the accumulation chamber method. In total, 712 measurements were carried out (146 in focused degassing vents, 566 on diffuse degassing areas). Single CO2 output values ranged from 1.8 10−5 to 1.68 kg s−1. In the case of diffuse degassing areas, statistical analyses allowed to discriminate between biogenic CO2 and CO2 deriving from a magmatichydrothermal source. Only the efflux values from the latter source were considered in the output estimates. The total estimated output thus obtained was about 2.61 kg s−1, relevant to a total surface of about 146,500 m2 (which includes only the magmatic CO2 emissions). This value is comparable with that of most non-volcanic emissions from geothermal and/or faulted areas of centralsouthern Italy, as well with the CO2 output from some of the volcanic areas of Italy.

    Description: Teleseismic waveforms recorded by a regional array crossing the northern Italian peninsula and northern Corsica are analyzed using the receiver function technique, to determine the first order crustal structure. The receiver function approach is used to isolate receiver-side PS conversions generated at the crust-mantle boundary and any major velocity discontinuity beneath the stations. We used the time delay between the direct P wave and the PS wave converted at the Moho discontinuity to infer crustal thickness beneath the stations. The crust-mantle boundary is estimated at 25 ± 1 km of depth in northern Corsica, 20 ± 2 km beneath the Elba island and 20 to 24 ± 2 km beneath Tuscany. In the eastern portion of the array, Moho depth increases from 28 ± 2 km beneath the Adriatic coast to 49 ± 3 km beneath the Apennine chain, in a distance of about 100 km. A double PS conversion produced beneath the Val Tiberina graben, to the west of the Apennines, corresponds to interfaces as deep as 20 ± 2 and 52 ± 2 km. This observation supports the hypothesis of partial overlapping between the shallow Tuscan Moho and the deeper Adriatic Moho. The westward deepening of the Adriatic Moho beneath the northern Apennines can be explained by lithosphere delamination that has dragged downward the Adriatic lower crust. The deep crustal root estimated beneath the northern Apennines indicates that this portion of the chain is isostatically overcompensated.

    Description: Propagation of shear waves produced by 25 mantle earthquakes (80-600 km depth) in the subduction zone of the south Tyrrhenian Sea (southern Italy) has been investigated to infer the geometry and extent of the descending lithosphere. From all hypocentral depths high-frequency, high-amplitude shear waves are recorded at most of the stations in southern Italy and easternmost Sicily. This shear-wave energy is interpreted to travel as a guided wave within the descending slab. In contrast, shear waves are either not recorded at all or they are recorded as low-frequency, low-amplitude signals at stations located in the peninsular part of Italy north of the Calabrian arc, in western Sicily and in Sardinia. This systematic S-wave attenuation is interpreted in terms of an active and continuous slab correlated with and limited to the Calabrian arc.

    Description: Eight cases of large-scale gravitational movements (with evidence of rock-slide type displacements) evolving close to Quaternary faults have been analysed in the Central Apennines. Geomorphological and structural surveys have defined the relationship between the gravitational displacements and the tectonically-controlled modifications of the landscape. The evolution of all the investigated cases has been conditioned by the presence of fault planes located along the mountain slopes. In most cases (Mt. Cefalone, Cima della Fossa, Villavallelonga, Casali d'Aschi, Gioia dei Marsi), the faults played or are playing a primary role in increasing the local relief and their activity represents the main geomorphic factor conditioning the gravitational movements. This kind of relationship has been observed along mountain slopes bordering depressions which have not been drained for most of their geomorphic history or have been characterised by an evolution of the hydrographic network that has been conditioned only by the local tectonic subsidence. In such cases, the gravitational movements develop in the footwalls of the faults. In other cases (Fiamignano, Pescasseroli) the faults have played a passive role, since they only bound the sliding masses and coincide with the surficial expressions of the sliding planes. Therefore, the gravitational displacements develop in the hangingwall of the faults. The evolution is conditioned by the incision of the hydrographic network in response to regional Quaternary uplift. The illustrated case studies provide a wide range of examples of the gravitational response of slopes to the modifications of the landscape due to linear and areal tectonics. The identification of the geomorphic traces of the large-scale gravitational movements along fault-controlled mountain fronts has implications for hazard, particularly for the evolution of the displacement. The quantitative analysis of the vertical displacements and data on the characteristics of the surface breaking during historical earthquakes demonstrate that along-fault offsets strongly increases where the unstable large-scale rock masses are located. Therefore, the large coseismic vertical offset may represent a major problem for the displacement of utilities and may represent a potential cause for the sudden and catastrophic evolution of the gravitational movement.

    Description: We computed receiver functions of teleseismic events that occurred within a distance of 35–90° and were recorded in central Italy by 15 temporary stations and 1 permanent station. In the receiver functions we identified the P-to-S phase converted at the Moho discontinuity beneath each station and estimated crustal thickness from the time delay of this phase with respect to the direct P arrival. For the temporary stations this relatively simple approach is justified given their limited recording period. To the permanent station we also applied the slant stacking technique to try to constrain the bulk crustal Vp/Vs and validate our estimate of crustal thickness. Our results show that, in central Italy, the Moho is shallow (∼22 km) beneath the Tyrrhenian margin of the peninsula and deepens toward the east. Beneath the central Apennines, Moho depth ranges from 39 to 47 km. The thickest crust matches the highest topography. At the Tremiti islands, in the Adriatic Sea, crustal thickness is 33 km. While our Moho depths beneath the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula and the Adriatic Sea are in agreement with previous results, a new result of this study is the crustal thickening beneath the central Apennines. This leads to the conclusion that the central Apennine topography is supported by a significant crustal root.

    Description: Evidence of a continuous lithosphere between the northern margin of Africa and Italy is given from the analysis of regional waveforms recorded by the Italian Seismic Network. Frequency and amplitude of shear waves Sn propagating over the Ionian Sea and the western part of the Levantine Sea are examined in this study. An important observation is that Sn waves are efficiently transmitted without exception at epicentral distances ranging from 3˚ to 22.5˚. The very efficient propagation of uppermost mantle shear waves implies that mantle lithosphere is continuous in this part of the Mediterranean region. This in turn implies that the lithosphere underlying the Adriatic Sea is attached to the African lithosphere and can be considered a promontory of the major African plate. The regional shear phase Lg, that typically propagates within the continental crust, is not transmitted in this area. This observation is consistent with the presence of oceanic crust in the eastern Mediterranean, as hypothesized by previous studies.

    Description: Shear-wave splitting estimates from recordings of 10 portable seismographic stations during the first year of the RETREAT seismic deployment, in combination with broadband data from the Italian national seismic network, are associated with seismic anisotropy within the upper mantle beneath the Northern Apennines. Anisotropic parameters derived from both shear-wave splitting and P travel-time residuals vary geographically and depend on event back-azimuth, reflecting complexity in the underlying mantle strain field. Variations of the splitting time delays and fast polarization seem to exclude a 2-D sublithosphere corner flow, associated with the Apennines subduction, as the main source of the inferred anisotropy. The anisotropic signal may be generated by a frozen-in fabric of the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian lithosphere domains, or by flow variations induced by episodic and fragmentary slab rollback.

    Description: The horizontal pendulums of the Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave) in the Trieste Karst, are long-base tiltmeters with Z¨ollner type suspension. The instruments have been continuously recording tilt and shear in the Grotta Gigante since the date of their installation by Prof. Antonio Marussi in 1966. Their setup has been completely overhauled several times since installation, restricting the interruptions of the measurements though to a minimum. The continuous recordings, apart from some interruptions, cover thus almost 40 years of measurements, producing a very noticeable long-term tiltmeter record of crustal deformation. The original recording system, still in function, was photographic with a mechanical timing and paper-advancing system, which has never given any problems at all, as it is very stable and not vulnerable by external factors as high humidity, problems in power supply, lightning or similar. In December 2003 a new recording system was installed, based on a solid-state acquisition system intercepting a laser light reflected from a mirror mounted on the horizontal pendulum beam. The sampling rate is 30 Hz, which turns the longbase instrument to a very-broad-band tiltmeter, apt to record the tilt signal on a broad-band of frequencies, ranging from secular deformation rate through the earth tides to seismic waves. Here we describe the acquisition system and present two endline members of the instrumental observation, the up to date long-term recording, and the observation of the great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake of December 26, 2004, seismic moment magnitude Mw = 9.1–9.3 [Lay, T., Kanamori, H., Ammon, C.J., Nettles, M., Ward, S.N., Aster, R.C., Beck, S.L., Bilek, S.L., Brudzinski, M.L., Butler, R., DeShon, H.R., Ekstr¨om, G., Satake, K., Sipkin, S., 2005. The Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake of 26 December 2004. Science. 308, 1127–1133.]. The secular-term observations indicate an average tilting over the last four decades towards NW of 23.4 nrad/year. We find evidences that this tilting is regional and has been going on since at least 125 ka. The recent earthquake of December 26, 2004 was well recorded by the pendulums.We show that the free oscillation modes were activated, including the lowest modes as e.g. 0T2, 0T3, 0T4, 0T5 and 2S1, 0S3, 0S4, 1S2.

    Description: Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island (with an extension of about 25 000 km2), exhibits a very wide variety of lithologies, ranging from sedimentary to metamorphic and volcanic rocks. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) have been applied to air kerma values measured by thermoluminescent dosimetry in several sites and to data of radionuclide concentrations, geochemical and mineralogical features of rocks and soils sampled in 29 sites of Sicily to point out similarities among different lithologies. The study was devoted to find multiple correlations and allow a better classification of Sicilian lithotypes. Samples of rocks and soils have been analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and gammaray spectrometry. Major element concentrations, mineralogical data, along with specific activities of 40K, 238U, and 232Th natural radionuclides, have been determined in several samples. Geochemical, mineralogical and petrographic features are in good agreement with radiometric data. A survey was also performed to measure air kerma in outdoor environment using thermoluminescent dosimeters. The measured values were compared with the predicted levels computed from the radioisotope concentrations present in rock and soil samples. Moreover, collected data can be used to evaluate the health impact of the natural radioactivity on the population.

    Description: Salina Island (Italy) is located in the central sector of the Aeolian Islands and represents the northernmost volcanic structure of an elongated ridge emplaced on a regional shear zone characterized by NNW-SSE strike-slip faults and by second order N-S and NE-SW faults. High-resolution, low-altitude aeromagnetic data collected in 2003 and 2005 allow us to study the subsurface structure of Salina Island. The magnetic data show a pattern with a wide range of wavelengths and intensities. Magnetic modeling constrained by volcanological data allow us to reconstruct the inner structure of the Salina volcanoes and surrounding marine regions. Long wavelength negative anomalies overlap E-W elongated sedimentary basin related to the Early Pliocene-Pleistocene opening of the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea back-arc basin. The shorter wavelength positive magnetic anomalies are related to the Late Pleistocene-Holocene volcanic (conduits, dikes) and tectonic (faults) structures. The magnetic and volcanological data indicate that the early (168- about 100 ka), basaltic to basaltic andesitic Salina volcanism developed along N-S and NE-SW tectonic structure, whereas the more recent basaltic andesitic to rhyolitic products (about 100-13ka) were emitted by vents related to the main NW-SE fault tectonic structures. The tectonic structures also control the location of the seamounts around the island and the geometry of the volcano-tectonic collapses. The Salina volcanism emplaced on a NNW-SSE regional discontinuity that represents a tear fault of the present-day roll-backing slab in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea.

    Description: The accuracy of automatic procedures for locating earthquakes is influenced by several factors such as errors in picking seismic phases, network geometry, modeling errors and velocity model uncertainties. The main purpose of this work is to improve the performances of the automatic procedure employed for the “quasi-real-time” location of seismic events in North Western Italy by developing a procedure based on a waveform similarity analysis and by using only one seismic station. To detect “earthquake families” a cross-correlation technique was applied to a data set of seismic waveforms recorded in the period 1985–2002, in a small test area (1600 km2) located in the SouthWestern Alps (Italy). Normalized cross-correlation matrices were calculated using about 2700 seismic events, selected on the basis of the signal to noise ratio, manually picked and located by using the Hypoellipse code. The waveform similarity analysis, based on the bridging technique, allowed grouping about 65% of the selected events into 80 earthquake families (multiplets) located inside the area considered. For each earthquake family a master event is selected, manually re-picked and re-located by using Hypoellipse code. Having chosen a reference station (STV) on the basis of the completeness of the available data set, an automatic procedure has been developed with the aim of cross-correlating new seismic recordings (automatically picked) to the waveforms of the events belonging to the detected families. If the new event is proved to belong to a family (on the basis of the cross-correlation values), its hypocenter co-ordinates are defined by the location of the master event of the associated family. The performance of the proposed procedure is tested and demonstrated using a data set of 104 selected earthquakes recorded in the period January 2003–June 2004 and located in the test area. The automatic procedure is able to locate, associating events with the multiplets detected by the waveform similarity analysis, about 50% of the test events, almost independently of the accuracy of the automatic phase picker and without the biasing of the network geometry and of the velocity model uncertainties.

The intensity of the gas emission and the considerable anomalies of the geochemical and geophysical parameters have alarmed the volcanological community and the Italian Civil Protection Agency on the possibility that this activity may represent a volcanic unrest at Panarea volcano. We used a high resolution Marine Digital Terrain Model (MDTM), with 0.5 m accuracy, and detailed underwater surveys by scuba diving to study the exhalation centres and the geological, morphological and structural features of the seafloor and to clarify the relationships between gas vents distribution, submarine volcanological structures and the recent deformation of this area. The underwater surveys revealed an exhalative field characterised by 21 main active gas vents and craters from metres to tens of metres in diameter, and a pervasive exhalation from the seafloor; hundreds of fossil craters associated with gas pipes and hydrothermal alteration are also present on the seafoor: craters, pipes and conduits are not associated with juvenile deposits and relate to a long standing history of gas exhalation and eruptions. We present the first geological sketch map of the seafloor surrounding the exhalative area and establish the role of NE- and NWtrending fractures as the main pathways for the gas exhalation.

    Description: The giant Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of December 26, 2004 caused permanent deformations effects in a region of previously never observed extension. The GPS data from the worldwide network of permanent IGS sites show significant coseismic displacements in an area exceeding 107 km2, reaching most of South-East Asia, besides Indonesia and India. We have analyzed long GPS time series histories in order to characterize the noise type of each site and, consequently, to precisely assess the formal errors of the coseismic offset estimates. The synthetic simulations of the coseismic displacement field obtained by means of a spherical model using different rupture histories indicate that a major part of the energy release took place in a fault plane similar to that obtained by Ammon et al.     Description: Deep-sea exploration is rapidly improving our understanding of volatiles geochemistry in mid-ocean-ridge igneous products. It is also placing greater constraints on degassing processes of the Earth’s mantle, with the result that degassing models based on vapour–melt equilibrium are no longer able to explain the increasing number of data. In fact, such models force to postulate an upper mantle strongly heterogeneous at any scale, and cannot account for the widespread carbon supersaturation of the recovered igneous products. Here we review the global He–Ar–CO2 dataset of fluid inclusions in mid-ocean-ridge glasses using the framework of advanced modelling of multicomponent bubble growth in magmas. We display that non-equilibrium fractionations among He, Ar and CO2, driven by their different diffusivities in silicate melts, are common in most of the natural conditions of magma decompression and their signature strongly depends on pressure of degassing. Due to the comparable Ar and CO2 diffusivity, magma degassing at low pressure fractionates both the He/Ar and He/CO2 ratio by a similar extent, while the slower CO2 diffusion at high pressure causes early kinetic effects on Ar/CO2 ratio and dramatically changes the degassing path. On this ground, the very different geochemical signatures among suites of data coming from different ridge segments mainly depend on the depth of the magma chamber where the melt was stored. Besides, the variations inside a single suite highlight variable ascent speed and cooling rate of the emplaced lava. The large variations in both the He/CO2 and Ar/CO2 ratios at almost constant He/Ar, displayed in glasses coming from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge 24–30 N segment and the Rodriguez Triple Junction, are therefore interpreted as a high-pressure signature. In contrast, the simultaneous increase in both He/CO2 and He/Ar of the East Pacific Rise, Pito Seamount and South-East Indian Ridge data sets suggests the dominance of low-pressure fractionation, implying that the shallow magma chambers are at a lower depth than those of the Mid- Atlantic Ridge 24–30 N and Rodriguez Triple Junction. Our conclusions support the presence of a relationship between spreading rate and depth of high-temperature zones below ridges, and are consistent with the depth of magma chambers as suggested from seismic studies. Non-equilibrium degassing explains the volatile systematics of mid-ocean-ridge basalts by starting from a single mantle-derived magma, dispensing with the supposed need for heterogeneities in abundance ratios of volatiles in the mantle below oceanic ridges.

    Description: The set of equations for global ocean biogeochemistry deterministic models have been formulated in a comprehensive and unified form in order to use them in numerical simulations of the marine ecosystem for climate change studies (PELAGOS, PELAgic biogeochemistry for Global Ocean Simulations). The fundamental approach stems from the representation of marine trophic interactions and major biogeochemical cycles introduced in the European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model (ERSEM). Our theoretical formulation revisits and generalizes the stoichiometric approach of ERSEM by defining the state variables as Chemical Functional Families (CFF). CFFs are further subdivided into living, non-living and inorganic components. Living CFFs are the basis for the definition of Living Functional Groups, the biomass-based functional prototype of the real organisms. Both CFFs and LFGs are theoretical constructs which allow us to relate measurable properties of marine biogeochemistry to the state variables used in deterministic models. This approach is sufficiently generic that may be used to describe other existing biomass-based ecosystem model.

    Description: Stromboli is a composite volcano, rising about 2.5 km above the sea floor, whose top lies about 1 km above the sea level forming the northernmost island of the Aeolian Archipelago volcanic arc (Tyrrhenian Sea). On December 28th, 2002, lava flows outpoured from the northern wall of NE crater and come down in the Sciara del Fuoco (SdF), a deep depression that marks the NW flank of the volcano edifice. On December 30th, 2002, two landslides occurred on the northern part of the SdF; it moved a mass in the order of tens of millions of cubic meters both above and below the sea level. The landslide produced a tsunami that causes significant damage on the eastern cost of the island, reaching the others Aeolian Islands and the Sicilian and south Italian coasts. This event lead to the upgrade of the ground deformation monitoring system, already existing on the island; the new requirement was the real-time detection of the deformations related to potential slope failures of the SdF. To this aim, a remotely controlled monitoring system, based both on GPS and topographic techniques was planned and set up in few months. The new monitoring system allowed to continuously measure the ground deformations occurring on the SdF, by integrating both terrestrial topographic and satellite geodetic techniques. Despite this system was severely damaged during the 7-months lasting eruption, it allowed to monitor important eruptive phases. For the first time, an accurate data set about the actual mass movements of the SdF and the crater area was available. It provided data that significantly supported the Civil Protection Authorities in making decisions and constrain the hypothesis about the landslide movements and volcanic activity. After the end of the eruption, the system was reinstated in order to optimize the instruments and to set up a monitoring system aimed at measuring deformations forecasting other flank collapses.

    Description: The sustained and uninterrupted plume degassing at Mount Etna volcano, Southern Italy, represents the troposphere’s most prominent natural source of fluorine. Of the ~ 200 Mg of fluorine (as HFg) emitted daily by the volcano, 1.6±2.7 Mg are deposited by wet and dry deposition. Fluorine-deposition via volcanic ash, here characterised for the first time, can be quite significant during volcanic eruptions (i.e. 60 Mg of fluorine were deposited during the 2001 eruption through volcanic ash, corresponding to ~ 85% of the total fluorine deposition). Despite the fact that these depositions are huge, the fate of the deposited fluorine and its impact on the environment are poorly understood. We herein present original data on fluorine abundance in vegetation (Castanea Sativa and Pinus Nigra) and andosoils from the volcano’s flank, in the attempt to reveal the potential impact of volcanogenic fluorine emissions. Fluorine contents in chestnut leaves and pine needles are in the range 1.8-35 µg/g and 2.1-74 µg/g respectively; they exceed the typical background concentrations in plants growing in rural areas, but fall within the lower range of typical concentrations in plants growing near high fluorine anthropogenic emission sources. The rare plume fumigations on the lower flanks of Mt Etna (distance 〉 4 km from summit craters) are probably the cause of the “undisturbed” nature of Etnean vegetation: climatic conditions, which limit the growth of vegetation on the upper regione deserta, are a natural limit to the development of more severe impacts. High fluorine contents, associated with visible symptoms, were only measured in pine needles at three sites, located near recently-active (2001 to 2003) lateral eruptive fractures. Total fluorine contents (FTOT) in the Etnean soils have a range of 112-341 µg/g, and fall within the typical range of undisturbed soils; fluorine extracted with distilled water (FH2O) have a range of 5.1 to 61 µg/g and accounts for 2-40 % of FTOT. FH2O is higher in topsoils from the eastern flank (downwind), while it decreases with depth in soil profiles and on increasing soil grain size (thereby testifying to its association with clay-mineral-rich, fine soil fractions). The fluorine adsorption capacity of the andosoils acts as a natural barrier that protects the groundwater system.

    Description: The 2D Cellular Automata model, MAGFLOW, simulates lava flows and an algorithm based on the Monte Carlo approach solves the anisotropic flow direction problem. The model was applied to reproduce a lava flow formed during the 2001 Etna eruption. This eruption provided the opportunity to verify the ability of MAGFLOW to simulate the path of lava flows which was made possible due to the availability of the necessary data for both modeling and subsequent validation. MAGFLOW reproduced quite accurately the spread of flow. A good agreement was highlighted between the simulated and observed length on steep slopes, whereas the area covered by the lava flow tends to be overestimated. The major inconsistencies found in the comparison between simulated and observed lava flow due to neglecting the effects of ephemeral vent formation.

    Description: By analysing an ionogram several important parameters like foF2 and MUF(3000)F2 can be found, that have a significant role in the studies concerning ionospheric physics and related phenomena. Furthermore, the observation of ionospheric plasma and the forecasting of physical phenomena connected to the Sun-Magnetosphere–Ionosphere–Thermosphere system holds a remarkable scientific interest with respect to space weather, because of the influence that these phenomena have on satellite and terrestrial communications. From this point of view, the development of models whose input are real-time ionospheric parameters has become fundamental. This paper will introduce a Visual Basic program for semi-automatic scaling of ionospheric parameters from ionograms. This software allows to increase the speed of the scaling phase performed by the operator trying also to improve the output in terms of reliability.

    Description: 1The purpose of this paper is to characterize the statistical distribution of worldwide largest earthquakes. We analyze the distribution of worldwide shallow events with Ms 7.0+ since 1900, by following the Occam’s razor philosophy; we start from the simplest possible model (stationary Poisson process), and we inspect more complicated models only if the data show significant departures from the simplest one. The results show two important characteristics; first, worldwide Ms 7.0+ earthquakes tend to cluster in time and space, with features similar to smaller events. Second, for some seismic regions there is evidence in favor of long-term fluctuations of the earthquake rate. These results support the hypothesis of universality, suggesting that an ETAS model with a background varying with time can be considered reliable to describe the seismicity distribution over a wide space-time-magnitude window. From a practical point of view, our findings suggest that the paradigm that seismic zones are stationary systems, implicitly assumed in seismic hazard assessment, should be regarded with caution.

    Description: The seismicity which affects Mt.Vesuvius is, at present, the only clear indicator of the volcano dynamics. In the last years, two periods of increased seismic activity occurred (August-October 1995 and March-May 1996). This seismicity was detected by the 10 analog stations of the Permanent Seismic Network as well as by up to 7 three-component temporary digital stations. A total number of about 600 events have been recorded, four of which showing magnitude 〉3.0. The maximum magnitude earthquake (M=3.4) was the strongest in the last fifty years and occurred on 25 April 1996. The use of three-component seismometers allowed us to obtain very reliable hypocentral locations. The focal volume of the two seismic crises does not exceed 5-6 km of depth below the crater area. Fault plane solutions of the most energetic events show focal planes oriented NW-SE and NE-SW, in agreement with the regional tectonic features, indicating that at present the seismicity of Mt.Vesuvius develops along pre-existing discontinuities. In addition, the occurrence of a fluiddriven source mechanism suggests a role played by the underground water on the seismic energy release. Shear wave splitting analyses confirmed the presence of an anisotropic volume related to a distribution of cracks andlor fractures parallely aligned to the main faults system of the volcano.

    Description: We present new paleomagnetic data for Quaternary u channel samples from two deep-sea gravity cores from the west Pacific Southern Ocean. These cores were recovered in the Antarctic summers 1995–1996 during the oceanographic cruise of the R/V Italica. One was recovered beneath the present-day Antarctic Polar Front (Anta 95-157), and the other is from within the Antarctic Zone (Anta 96-16). The Matuyama- Brunhes boundary has been identified in both cores, with a longer history of sedimentation available in Anta 96-16. A detailed rock magnetic study shows discrete occurrences of ice rafted debris, which were influenced by 100-kyr orbital eccentricity variations during the Brunhes Chron. This is consistent with the main periodicity of the climate system since the mid-Pleistocene climate transition.

    Description: We present an update, for years 2003 and 2004, of the European– Mediterranean Regional Centroid Moment Tensor (RCMT) catalog that we maintain since 1997. This update adds 177 new solutions to the database, relating to moderate-magnitude (4.5 ≤M〈5.5) earthquakes. About 30% of our new solutions also appear in the global CMT catalog: comparison of the two independent determinations generally shows very good agreement.Within the time span covered, the most noticeable seismic sequences occurred in Northern Africa (Boumerdes, Algerian coast in 2003 and Al Hoceima, Morocco in 2004) and in Southern Greece and Dodecanese region (August 2003 and 2004). The complete RCMT catalog for the European and Mediterranean region now covers 8 years, and contains about 600 solutions.

    Description: Surface waves from the great Sumatra-Andaman earthquakes of 2004 and 2005 that cross Italy south of 44 N display Love-to-Rayleigh scattered waves (quasi- Love phases) diagnostic of sharp lateral gradients in the anisotropic properties of Earth’s upper mantle. Surface waves that traverse Italy further north lack this distinctive phase, documenting a change in the upper mantle fabric that is corroborated by a shift in the fast polarization of shear wave birefringence. These observations suggest that orogen-parallel asthenospheric extension behind the retreating Apennines slab has limited geographical expression. We hypothesize that subduction rollback currently terminates at 44 N, while the upper mantle flow pattern further to the north has been recently rearranged.

    Description: While very large earthquakes are generally confined to subduction zones, the SW Iberian margin –setting of the famous Mw 8.5–8.7, 1755 Lisbon tsunami earthquake- may be an exception to this rule. Evidence for active subduction is not conclusive here, but instead plate convergence in old oceanic lithosphere with large brittle layer thickness can account for the occurrence of great earthquakes along moderate-length faults. We estimate the source parameters of the February 12th 2007, Horseshoe earthquake. Regional moment tensor inversion yields an Mw 6.0, reverse to strike-slip faulting source in the upper mantle. Modelling teleseismic, surface-reflected body waves (pP, pwP, sP) indicates a source depth of 40 km beneath the seafloor. Analysing apparent source time functions allows identifying the preferred fault plane (strike N245°E/ dip 55°/ rake 50°), and estimating rupture area (53 km2) and average slip (0.27 m). Scaling the source characteristics to the size of the 1755 earthquake suggests a fault length of 230–315 km, being compatible with the length of mapped faults in the area.

    Description: Two swarms of microearthquakes (ML ≤ 2.2), occurred on July 2-7 and August 22, 2000 at Campi Flegrei, accompained by a ground uplift episode (4 cm) which interrupted on early March 2000 the descending trend started on 1985. Spectral analysis indicates a direct involvement of magmatic/hydrothermal fluids in the source process of the July swarm, while the August events are typical of shear failure, similar to most of the earthquakes that occurred during the last (1982-1984) bradyseismic crisis. Precise 3-D relative location applied to similar earthquakes allows for the recognition of two parallel alignments trending NE-SW at depths of 1.7 and 3.2 Km. This trend is consistent with the direction of the main focal plane obtained from fault plane solutions and evidences tensile failure in close proximity to the zone of maximum uplift as depicted by geodetic measurements. A fault weakening mechanism triggered by increasing pore pressure is invoked as the cause of these earthquakes.

    Description: We estimated SKS splitting parameters for 18 earthquakes observed over 2 years on a dense linear seismometer array crossing the Apennines orogen (Northern Italy). An abrupt (within 30 km) change in fast polarization occurs near the crest of the Apennines. Southwest of the crest, fast polarization parallels the Apennines strike (WNW–ESE), rotating to EW orientation near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Northeast of the crest, toward the Po Plain, fast polarization is NNE–SSW, roughly normal to the orogen’s strike. Delay times (0.6–2.9s) do not show a remarkable pattern. Splitting parameters beneath the Apennines argue against anisotropy restricted to the crust, and suggest that the mantle region deformed by Apennines slab rollback is spatially limited. We hypothesize that the rollback process has been uneven, evolving to a contortion of the northern edge of the Apennines slab, and perhaps incipient detachment. Lithospheric anisotropy beneath the Po-Plain may also be significant.

    Description: This work highlights how surface geological data can integrate and complete a fault characterization including its seismogenic depth. We investigated the area struck by the November, 1999, Mw 7.1 earthquake that ruptured the Düzce segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) after the August, 1999, Mw 7.4 Izmit earthquake. To explore the persistency or evolution of the active fault setting at the surface, we compared detailed coseismic surface expressions with the long-term morphology and structural architecture of the Düzce zone. We identified a simple 1999 coseismic fault trace (CFT) and an older complex fault system (RFS) involving a wider zone of deformation. Two different parts of the Düzce segment were recognized. A western section presents a staircase trajectory of the coseismic fault trace that reactivated part of the older fault system. An eastern section presents a straight coseismic fault trace that cross-cuts the older and complex fault system. The western Düzce fault segment splays out from the Izmit counterpart of the NAFZ, forming a releasing fault junction. By comparing a model of its coseismic surface deformation field with the long-term morphology, we observed that the present topography of this western section results from the NAFZ activity by repeating coseismic deformations like those in 1999. The mechanical interaction in the release fault junction produces local transtension across the western Düzce fault and justifies its stable complexity. It does not evolve into a straight trace. The surface boundary between the Düzce fault sections also separates at depth two fault sections: one with low slip to the west, and another with a big asperity to the east. Thus, the Izmit/Düzce interaction (1) may produce an unfavorable setting for a build-up of asperities in the western Düzce segment and (2) could delay the propagation of the Izmit rupture along the Düzce segment that nucleates mainshocks only on its eastern section. In other words, the arrangement of the fault junction may permanently control how the two sections of the Düzce fault behave and rupture.

    Description: The present-day arcuate shape of the Calabrian Arc has been accomplished during Neogene and Early Pleistocene by large and opposite vertical axis rotations along the two arms of the Arc. Clockwise (CW) rotations have been systematically registered in Sicily and Calabria, whereas counterclockwise (CCW) rotations were measured in Southern Apennines. Such opposite vertical axis rotations ceased in the uppermost part of the Lower Pleistocene (about 1 Ma ago) along almost the entire Calabrian Arc and are not observed in the present-day GPS velocity field. The end of the Calabrian Arc bending during the Quaternary marks a decrease in the efficiency of the tectonic processes related to the long-lived subduction of the Ionian slab, which caused the halting of the back-arc opening in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea.

    Description: Satellite in situ measurements of plasma (electron) density fluctuations provide direct information about the structure and morphology of irregularities that are responsible for scintillation of radio waves on transionospheric links. When supplemented with the ionosphere model and irregularity anisotropy model, they can be applied to model morphology of scintillation provided a suitable propagation model is used. In this paper we present a scintillation climatological model for the Northern Hemisphere high-latitude ionosphere, which makes use of the Dynamics Explorer 2 retarding potential analyzer plasma density data, IRI ionosphere model, and the phase screen propagation model. An important aspect of our work is that we derived from the satellite data not just the turbulence strength parameter Cs but also the spectral index p, which influences the scintillation level as well. We discuss the magnetic activity, season, magnetic time, and latitude dependence of these parameters. We were able to reproduce successfully the observed scintillation intensity diurnal and seasonal variations. The model satisfactorily describes the expansion of the scintillation zone under magnetically disturbed conditions and reproduces the dawn-dusk asymmetry in the scintillation intensity. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach.

    Description: The biomarker compositions of iron sulfide nodules (ISNs; upper Pliocene Valle Ricca section near Rome, Italy) that contain the ferrimagnetic mineral greigite (Fe3S4) were examined. In addition to the presence of specific terrestrial and marine biomarkers, consistent with formation in coastal marine sediments, these ISNs contain compounds thought to originate from sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). These compounds include a variety of low-molecular-weight and branched alkanols and several non-isoprenoidal dialkyl glycerol diethers (DGDs). In addition, archaeal biomarkers, including archaeol, macrocyclic isoprenoidal DGDs and isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers are also present. Both SRB and archaeal lipid d13C values are depleted in 13C (d13C values are typically less than 50‰), which suggests that the SRB and archaea consumed 13C depleted methane. These biomarker and isotopic signatures are similar to those found in cold seeps and marine sediments where anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) occurs with sulfate serving as the terminal electron acceptor. Association of AOM with formation of greigite-containing ISNs could provide an explanation for documented remagnetization of the Valle Ricca sediments. Upward migration of methane, subsequent AOM and associated authigenic greigite formation are widespread processes in the geological record that have considerable potential to compromise paleomagnetic records. 2007 Elsevier Ltd.     Description: We report on a high-resolution magnetostratigraphic analysis of a continuous 97.5 m thick upper Sinemurian–Pliensbachian pelagic limestone section (“Corniola” formation) exposed at Bosso Stirpeto (Marche, Italy), where detailed ammonite and calcareous nannofossil biozonation is available. The early Pliensbachian (Carixian) is notably expanded (74.35 m excluding few slumps), implying an average sedimentation rate of 28.6 m/Myr. Both the Carixian boundaries and three additional intra-Carixian ammonite zone boundaries are tied up with polarity magnetozones. We find that a normal polarity characterizes the latest Sinemurian and Sinemurian/Carixian boundary, while a reverse polarity (punctuated by three short normal polarity magnetozones) dominates the Carixian. In the lower Carixian sediments, two 3.39–4.65 m thick (excluding the slumps) intervals are characterized by persistent transitional (between 45°N and 45°S) virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) latitudes, but this seems not to be the result of mineral magnetic artefacts, antipodal polarity averaging, or sedimentary layer disturbance. Thus we suggest that in two ∼120 and 160 kyr-long time intervals during the early Carixian, the VGPs were predominantly confined at tropical–equatorial latitudes of the Earth. Such geomagnetic feature has never been documented before elsewhere in other time intervals, and requires further paleomagnetic investigation of other expanded Carixian section to be confirmed. The magnetic polarity profile (including the transitional direction intervals) of Bosso Stirpeto may compare with that from similarly expanded Carixian sections (Breggia, Switzerland), and cores (Montcornet, Paris basin). However, the matching of magnetic polarity zones requires a significant aging of some parts of the magnetostratigraphic profile at both Breggia and Montcornet.

    Description: The “methane-led hypotheses” assume that gas hydrates and marine seeps are the sole geologic factors controlling Quaternary atmospheric and climate changes. Nevertheless, a wider class of geologic sources of methane exist which could have played a role in past climate changes. Beyond offshore seepage, relevant geologic emissions of methane (GEM) are from onshore seepage, including mud volcanism, microseepage and geothermal flux; altogether GEM are the second most important natural source of atmospheric methane at present. The amount of methane entering the atmosphere from onshore GEM seems to prevail on that from offshore seepage. Onshore sources inject a predominantly isotopically heavy (13C-enriched) methane into the atmosphere. They are controlled mainly by endogenic (geodynamic) processes, which induce large-scale gas flow variations over geologic and millennial time scales, and only partially by exogenic (surface) conditions, so that they are not affected by negative feedbacks. The eventual influence on atmospheric methane concentration does not necessarily require catastrophic or abrupt releases, as proposed for the “clathrate gun hypothesis”. Enhanced degassing from these sources could have contributed to the methane trends observed in the ice core records, and could explain the late Quaternary peaks of increased methane concentrations accompanied by the enrichment of isotopically heavy methane, as recently observed. This hypothesis shall be tested by means of robust multidisciplinary studies, mainly based on a series of atmospheric, biologic and geologic proxies.

    Description: Central to any study of climate change is the development of an inventory that identifies and quantifies natural and anthropogenic sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHG). Recent studies have demonstrated that geologic emissions of methane (GEM), although not considered in the inventories of the IntergovernmentalPanel on Climate Change (IPCC), are an important GHG source. Etiope and Klusman (2002, Chemosphere 49, 777–789) documented that significant amounts of methane, produced within the Earth crust, are released naturally into the atmosphere through faults and fractured rocks. Major GEMs are related to hydrocarbon production in sedimentary basins (biogenic and thermogenic methane), through continuous exhalation and eruptions from more than 1200 onshore and offshore mud volcanoes (MVs), through diffuse soil microseepage, and shallow marine seeps; secondarily, methane is released from geothermal and volcano-magmatic systems. Minor geologic sources are those related to natural exhalation from coal-bearing rocks (influenced by mining activities), degassing from crystalline basement and mantle. While marine seeps have been studied for decades, methane flux from MVs has been the object of detailed measurements only since 2001, when hundreds of gas flux measurements were performed from vents and soilin the main terrestrial MVs of Europe, in Romania and Italy (Etiope et al.,2003, Geophysical Research Letters 30, 1094, doi:10.1029/2002GL016287; and references therein). In 2003 gas flux was measured in Azerbaijan, which hosts the world’s biggest MVs and densest MV population (Etiope et al., 2004, Geology, in press). In all areas investigated around 102–103 tons of methane per km2 are annually injected into the atmosphere. The global estimates of GEM from MVs range from 5 to 13Tg yr-1 (Etiope and Milkov, 2004, Environmental Geology, in press).

    Description: Following the installation of a broadband network on Mt. Etna, sustained Long-Period (LP) activity was recorded accompanying a period of total quiescence and the subsequent onset of the 2004–2005 effusive episode. From about 56000 events detected by an automatic classification procedure, we analyse a subset of about 3000 signals spanning the December 17th, 2003–September 25th, 2004, time interval. LP spectra are characterised by several, unevenly-spaced narrow peaks spanning the 0.5–10 Hz frequency band. These peaks are common to all the recording sites of the network, and different from those associated with tremor signals. Throughout the analysed time interval, LP spectra and waveforms maintain significant similarity, thus indicating the involvement of a non-destructive source process that we interpret in terms of the resonance of a fluid-filled buried cavity. Polarisation analysis indicates radiation from a non-isotropic source involving large amounts of shear. Concurrently with LP signals, recordings from the summit station also depict Very-Long-Period (VLP) pulses whose rectilinear motion points to a region located beneath the summit craters at depths ranging between 800 and 1100 m beneath the surface. Based on a refined repicking of similar waveforms, we obtain robust locations for a selected subset of the most energetic LP events from probabilistic inversion of travel-times calculated for a 3D heterogenous structure. LP sources cluster in a narrow volume located beneath the summit craters, and extending to a maximum depth of ≈ 800 m beneath the surface. No causal relationships are observed between LP, VLP and tremor activities and the onset of the 2004–2005 lava effusions, thus indicating that magmatic overpressure played a limited role in triggering this eruption. These data represent the very first observation of LP and VLP activity at Etna during non-eruptive periods, and open the way to the quantitative modelling of the geometry and dynamics of the shallow plumbing system.

    Description: The diffusion of the halogens fluorine, chlorine, and bromine was measured in a hawaiitic melt from Mt. Etna at 500 MPa and 1.0 GPa, 1250 to 1450 ºC at anhydrous conditions; the diffusion of F and Cl in the melt was also studied with about 3 wt% of dissolved water. Experiments were performed using the diffusion-couple technique in a piston cylinder. Most experiments were performed with only one halogen diffusing between the halogen-enriched and halogen-poor halves of the diffusion couple, but a few experiments with a mixture of halogens (F, Cl, Br) were also performed in order to investigate the possibility of interactions between the halogens during diffusion. Fluorine and chlorine diffusivity show a very similar behavior, slightly diverging at low temperature. Bromine diffusion is a factor of about 2 to 5 lower than the other halogens in this study. Diffusion coefficients for fluorine range between 2.3x10−11 and 1.4x10−10 m2s−1, for chlorine between 1.1x10−11 and 1.3x10−10 and for bromine between 9.4x10−12 and 6.8x10−11 m2s−1. No pressure effect was detected at the conditions investigated. In experiments involving mixed halogens, the diffusivities appear to decrease slightly (by a factor of ~ 3), and are more uniform among the three elements. However, activation energies for diffusion do not appear to differ between experiments with individual halogens or when they are all mixed together. The effect of water increases the diffusion coefficients of F and Cl by no more than a factor of 3 compared to the anhydrous melt (DF = 4.0x10−11 to 1.6x10−10 m2s−1; DCl = 3.0x10−11 to 1.9x10−10 m2s−1). Comparing our results to the diffusion coefficients of other volatiles in nominally dry basaltic melts, halogen diffusivities are about one order of magnitude lower than H2O, similar to CO2, and a factor of ~5 higher than S. The contrasting volatile diffusivities may affect the variable extent of volatile degassing upon melt depressurization and vesiculation, and can help our understanding of the compositions of rapidly grown magmatic bubbles.

    Description: We provide new data on relative sea-level change from the late Holocene for two locations in the central Mediterranean: Sardinia and NE Adriatico. They are based on precise measures of submerged archaeological and tide notch markers that are good indicators of past sea-level elevation. Twelve submerged archaeological sites were studied: six, aged between 2.5 and 1.6 ka BP, located along the Sardinia coast, and a further six, dated 2.0 ka BP, located along the NE Adriatic coast (Italy, Slovenia and Croatia). For Sardinia, we also use beach rock and core data that can be related to Holocene sea level. The elevations of selected significant archaeological markers were measured with respect to the present sea level, applying corrections for tide and atmospheric pressure values at the time of surveys. The interpretation of the functional heights related to sea level at the time of their construction provides data on the relative changes between land and sea; these data are compared with predictions derived from a new glacio–hydro-isostatic model associated with the Last Glacial cycle. Sardinia is tectonically relatively stable and we use the sea-level data from this island to calibrate our models for eustatic and glacio–hydro-isostatic change. The results are consistent with those from another tectonically stable site, the Versilia Plain of Italy. The northeast Adriatic (Italy, Slovenia and Croatia) is an area of subsidence and we use the calibrated model results to separate out the isostatic from the tectonic contributions. This indicates that the Adriatic coast from the Gulf of Trieste to the southern end of Istria has Q1 tectonically subsided by 1.5m since Roman times.
