    Notes: Abstract The present study attempts to determine the factors which induce spores in the genus Peyssonnelia to undergo two different forms of embryogeny. Carpospores and tetraspores of P. squamaria (Gmelin, 1768) Decaisne, 1841 were cultivated, and two types of development noted: the “Dumontia type”, typical of prevalently saxicolous thalli, and the “Naccaria type”, observed in plants growing as emi-endophytes. This is the first time that this phenomenon has been observed in the Peyssonneliaceae.

    Notes: Summary Elastin components have been identified in chick aorta by different immunoelectronmicroscopic procedures (peroxidase-antiperoxidase, immunoferritin and immunogold) using affinity purified antibodies to chick tropoelastin. The PAP method used in a preembedding procedure stained the outer portion of amorphous elastin and the microfibrils very intensively. The surface of the cells was also slightly stained. On the contrary immunogold labelling on Epon or Lowicryl embedded sections produced a strong decoration only of amorphous elastin, while microfibrils remained almost completely unlabelled. The result is not due to loss of antigenicity of microfibrils during embedding, since similar data were obtained with immunoferritin in a preembedding procedure. Experiments performed under different stringency conditions showed that the products of the peroxidase reaction diffuse and redistribute in the tissue, indicating that the positive staining of microfibrils and cell surface is an artifact. The value of different immunological reagents and procedures in studying the fine mapping of clastin components is discussed.

    Notes: Optical density, viscosity, and light scattering measurements for calf thymus DNA in water-N,N dimethyl formamide (DMF) solutions are presented. DMF content varied between 0 and 60% (v/v) and DNA molecular weight varied between 15 × 106 and 0.5 × 106. Complementary measurements of the solubility of adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine in H2O-DMF mixtures are presented. The denaturation temperature of DNA, manifested by about a 35% increase of optical density, is gradually depressed by increasing DMF content. However, a significant increase of OD occurs even before (and even after) the denaturation point, when DMF content is increased isothermally. The intrinsic viscosity also exhibits a large decrease when DMF content is increased both before and after the denaturation point. Light scattering data for high-molecular-weight DNA in the predenaturation range indicate a decrease of the mean-square radius and a constant molecular weight on increasing DMF content. The results, interpreted in terms of the wormlike chain of Kratky and Porod, indicate a large decrease of the persistence length of DNA. For low-molecular-weight DNA, radius and molecular weight increase with DMF content, indicating intermolecular aggregation. The formation of compact structures of native DNA is discussed in terms of an increased solubility of uncharged bases, and a decreased solubility of phosphate and deoxyribose groups, when a less polar environment is provided by the addition of DMF.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wird eine neue asymmetrische Synthese von Polymeren beschrieben, die aus Mononeren ohne asymmetrische C-Atome erhalten werden.Als ungesättigte cyclische Verbindung konnte Benzofuran durch Öffnung und Polynerisation der Doppelbindung des Furanringes in Gegenwart von asymmetrischen kationischen Katalysatoren in Polymere überführt werden, die eine hohe optische Aktivität besitzen. Die Rotationsdispersionkurve zeigt ein Maximum bei 303 mμ ([M] = -800).In diesen Polymeren enthält jede Monomereinheit zwei C-Atome in der Kette, die - auch in unmittelbarer Umgebung betrachtet - asymmetrisch sind.Die optisch aktiven Polybenzofurane enthalten praktisch keine aus dem Katalysator stammenden asymmetrischen Endgruppen. Die asymmetrische Synthese kann daher auf die orientierende Wirkung des negativ asymmetrischen Gegenions zurückgeführt werden.
    Notes: A new asymmetric synthesis of polymers is described; it was obtained from monomers which do not contain asymmetric carbon atoms.The polymerization, in the presence of asymmetric cationic catalysts, of an unsaturated cyclic compound, benzofuran, by opening of the double bond of the furan ring, led to polymers having high optical activity.The rotation dispersion curve, which shows a maximum at 303 mμ ([M] = -800) is here shown. Each monomeric unit of these polymers contains two carbon atoms in the chain, which are asymmetric, even if considered in their immediate surrounding.Optically active polybenzofurans do not remarkably contain asymmetric end-groups deriving from the catalyst. The asymmetric synthesis may therefore be related to the orienting effect of the negative asymmetric counter-ion.

Die sterischen Strukturen des Poly-cis- und des Poly-trans-β-chlorvinylbutyläthers unterscheiden sich darin, daß der erstere eine erythro- und der letztere eine threo-di-isotaktische Struktur besitzt. Diese Ergebnisse beweisen, daß in beiden Fällen eine cis-Addition an die Doppelbindung stattfindet; d.h., daß der sterische Polymerisationstyp für die beiden Formen identisch ist.Es werden außerdem einige Gesichtspunkte des Mechanismus der stereospezifischen Polymerisation von mono-olefinischen Monomeren diskutiert. Außer dem Typ der Öffnung der Doppelbindung (cis oder trans), der die sterischen Verhältnisse im Innern der einzelnen Monomereinheiten bestimmt, wird die Art des Angriffs des Monomeren auf die Ketten in Betracht gezogen. Dieser kann auf der einen oder auf der anderen Seite der beiden enantiomorphen Flächen (D oder L) des Monomeren in konstanter oder in alternierender Weise stattfinden. Dieser sterische Angriff bestimmt die strukturellen Beziechungen zwischen aufeinanderfolgenden Monomereinheiten.
    Notes: Some cis- and trans-β-chlorovinyl alkyl ethers were polymerized in a stereospecific way, and crystalline polymers.The steric structures of poly(cis-) and poly(trans-β-chloro vinyl butyl ethers) are different one from another, and more precisely of the erythro and threo di-isotactic type respectively. These results demonstrate a steric polymerization mechanism, which is identical in both forms, with a cis opening of the double bond.Moreover some aspects of the stereospecific polymerization mechanism of mono-olefinic monomers are discussed. Beside the type of opening of the double bond (cis or trans), determining the steric ratios inside each monomeric unit, also the mode of attack of the monomer to the chain is considered here. It can take place on one or on the other of the two enantiomer faces (D or L) of the monomer in a constant or in an alternated way. Such a steric attack determines the structural relationships between subsequent monomeric units.
