Notes: Abstract The mode of inheritance of the gene for chick kidney ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC), found previously as a genetic variant, was investigated. White Leghorn B line males homozygous for the allele for the variant OTC gene were selected using the California Gray breed, having a near-absolute deficiency of the enzyme. Then further crosses of the two breeds were made. The mean value of the OTC level of F1 progeny was about 170 units. Chicks from the backcross generation were divided into two groups, of high activity and low activity, in a ratio of 1:1. F2 chicks were divided into three groups: one-fourth of the chicks were classified as a “super high” group, one-half were “high,” and the remaining one-fourth were “low” the mean values for OTC level were 356.7, 196.4, and 15.6 units, respectively. From these results, it was suggested that the variant OTC represents a simple autosomal incompletely dominant trait.

Notes: Abstract The genetics of two esterase loci active in autogenous adults of the mosquito Culex pipiens pipiens L. has been studied by means of starch gel electrophoresis. Three alleles at the Est-1 locus and eight at the Est-2 locus are described. Both loci have a null allele. Active alleles are codominant and there is no hybrid enzyme in heterozygotes. The Est-1 locus codes esterases preferentially hydrolyzing α-naphthylacetate and the Est-2 locus esterases preferentially hydrolyzing β-naphthylacetate. Strains homozygous for both loci were selected. Linkage studies of the two loci have shown that they are not sex linked but are linked to each other, the crossover frequency being 8.6%. The polymorphism of two laboratory and two natural populations is described for both loci. Phenotypic distributions are in good agreement with Hardy-Weinberg expectations.

Notes: Abstract Methods are presented for the isolation of basic proteins (Pb proteins) from human parotid saliva collected from humans possessing different alleles at the Pb locus. The proteins were found to be extremely basic, with an isoelectric point above 9.5. They contain approximately 45% of the basic amino acids histidine, lysine, and arginine, and are devoid of cysteine, proline, threonine, valine, methionine, and tryptophan. They are free of carbohydrate. A comparison of the amino acid sequence data of Pb protein to all available amino acid sequences revealed that no sequence similarities exist between the Pb proteins and any other proteins reported, although proteins of similar amino acid compositions have been reported by others. A model is presented which accounts for the several forms of allelic proteins based on observed amino acid sequence differences.

Notes: Abstract Discontinuous starch gel electrophoresis revealed a fourth allele of rabbit prealbumin serum esterase at locus Est-2. This allele is designated Est-2 f and appears to be silent. In addition to the prealbumin serum esterases, another serum esterase system was studied in rabbits. This system is localized in the β-globulin region. Genetic analysis indicated that one locus with two codominant alleles controls the variation in this region. Linkage of this system with Est-1 and Est-2 of the prealbumin serum esterases was demonstrated. Comparison of the arrangement of these esterase loci on linkage group VI with the esterase loci on chromosome 8 of the mouse gives additional support for the theory of evolutionary conservation of chromosomal segments coding for mammalian esterases.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this review is to summarize recent progress in the field of genetic protein polymorphisms found in human saliva since 1972. Prior to 1972 most of the investigations were related to amylase. The genetics of salivary amylase will not be considered here, since it has recently been thoroughly reviewed elsewhere (Merritt and Karn, 1977). In this review, special attention will be devoted to the complex interrelationships of the proline-rich (Pr), double-band (Db), acidic protein (Pa), and peroxidase (SAPX) systems. The biochemically related Pr, Db, and Pa systems show distinctive genetic patterns, and there are associations between the phenotypes indicating linkage relationships. There is also evidence for probable interaction of products of the Pa and SAPX loci. Electrophoretic properties of these proteins can be defined in several gel systems, permitting an accurate definition of phenotypes. The usefulness and limitations of the different gel systems in the interpretation of these electrophoretic patterns will be illustrated. Allelic frequencies of the systems to be discussed are given in Table I. To aid comprehension, the systems will be discussed in logical rather than historical sequence.

Notes: Abstract Electrophoretic variants for the mitochondrial isozyme of aldehyde dehydrogenase (AHD) have been observed in inbred strains and in Harwell linkage testing stocks of Mus musculus. F1 (LVC×C57BL/Go) mice showed a codominant allele three-banded phenotype, which suggests a dimeric subunit structure (designated AHD-A2). The anodal-migrating supernatant isozyme of AHD was electrophoretically invariant among the 23 inbred strains and stocks examined. The genetic locus encoding AHD-A2 (suggested name Ahd-1) is localized on chromosome 4 and was mapped close to je (jerker) and Gpd-1 (encoding the liver and kidney isozyme of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase). Ontogenetic analyses demonstrated that both AHD isozymes exhibited low activity in late fetal and early neonatal liver and kidney extracts, and reached adult levels within 3 weeks of birth.

Notes: Abstract Progeny produced from Bombina bombina, B. variegata, and field-collected interspecific hybrids have been analyzed for the inheritance of five enzyme loci, which are fixed for alternate alleles in the parental species. Lactate dehydrogenase (Ldh-1), NAD-dependent malate dehydrogenase (Mdh-1), creatine kinase (Ck), adenylate kinase (Ak), and glucosephosphate isomerase (Gpi) are all inherited in a Mendelian manner as codominant alleles at nuclear loci. Both parental alleles are equally functional in artificial F1 hybrids (female B. bombina×male B. variegata) at each of the loci studied. No linkage between any pair of loci was observed. Discovery of this inherited biochemical variation combined with a technique for assaying individual genotypes without killing the animals makes feasible studies of hybrid population structure heretofore impossible.

Notes: Abstract The Bgs locus determines tissue levels of β-galactosidase in the mouse, so that enzyme levels are twice as high in mice carrying the Bgs hallele as in mice carrying the Bgs dallele (Felton et al., 1974). By immunotitration with antiserum to purified β-galactosidase, we have found that the Bgs locus influences the amount of enzyme protein present in the tissues. We have utilized recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice to confirm the location of the Bgs locus on chromosome 9. The inhibition of mouse β-galactosidase by the active-site-directed reagent N-bromoacetyl-β-d-galactosylamine has been investigated. β-Galactosidase from the high and low Bgs strains has identical affinity for this inhibitor.

Notes: Abstract An electrophoretic polymorphism of the peroxisomal enzyme d-amino acid oxidase was observed in NZC strain Mus musculus. F1 (NZC × BALB/c) mice showed a codominant allele two-banded phenotype which is inconsistent with the dimeric subunit structure reported for this enzyme in other species. The enzyme locus (Dao) was shown to segregate independently of Hao-1, encoding the peroxisomal enzyme hydroxyacid oxidase (liver or A4 isozyme). Thus Dao is not linked to previously mapped peroxisomal enzyme loci, Hao-1 and Cs, closely localized on chromosome 2.

Notes: Abstract Two unlinked genes, Adh 1 and Adh 2, control the production of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in seeds of the annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Each gene is polymorphic, having F and S alleles. Starch gel electrophoretic zymograms of the four possible double homozygotes have three bands, representing two homodimers and an intermediately migrating intergenic isozyme. Zymograms of double heterozygotes consist of nine bands produced by ten isozymes: six intragenics and four intergenics, two of which are coincident. Results of dissociation-recombination (D-R) experiments are reported which demonstrate the subunit composition of the intergenic isozymes, thus supporting the relationships suggested by genetic studies. Densitometric tracings of the zymogram of a cleared gel and measurements of activities of homodimer isozymes eluted from gels following D-R of an intergenic isozyme showed that the Adh 2 isozymes were more than twice as active as those of Adh 1. Measurements of activities of crude extracts from the four possible double homozygous genotypes indicated that the seeds of the genotype Adh 1 F /Adh 1 F , Adh 2 S /Adh 2 S produced more activity than the other three. This genotype is the most common one found in wild and cultivated stocks. Isozymes eluted following electrophoresis of the same extracts had averages of 19%, 70%, and 11% of total activity contributed by the Adh 1, Adh2, and intergenic isozymes, respectively. A simple but efficient method of isozyme elution from starch gels is described which resulted in nearly full expected recovery (approximately 46%) of the ADH activity in the applied sample.

Notes: Abstract A number of biochemical and genetic features shared by aldehyde oxidase and pyridoxal oxidase in Drosophila melanogaster indicate a close relationship between these enzymes. The present work shows that probable structural genes for these enzymes are within about 0.08 map unit of each other. Comparison with intensively studied regions of the genome suggests that this value is of the order of magnitude expected for adjacent functional units. Despite this close linkage, there is no indication of coordinate expression of the two enzymes. These results are consistent with the idea that each structural gene is under control of its own regulatory region, but alternative explanations are possible.

Notes: Abstract There are two structural forms of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in Drosophila melanogaster. Whether one or the other or both show in vitro (and probably in vivo) activity depends on the genotype of a sex-linked locus (Zw). In this article, the relative fitnesses of heterozygotes (with both electromorphs active) and homozygotes (with activity demonstrable for only one or the other electromorph) for the Zw locus are described. It is shown that the relative fitness of heterozygotes increases with increase in population density, or degree of crowding and trophic stress, and that the mean development times of Zw heterozygotes are lower than those of the Zw homozygotes. In addition, and perhaps accounting for the fitness and viability excess of the heterozygotes, one set of evidence strongly suggests that they are better buffered against trophic stress than the homozygotes.

Notes: Abstract The atomic absorption method for the determination of titanium in N2O-acetylene flames is studied from the point of view of the valence state of titanium, the effect of mineral acids and various organic complexing ligands in solution. It seems evident that the thermal procedures within the dry aerosol particle are rather more deciding for the atomisation processes than the complexation equilibria in solution. In the presence of chromotropic acid the sensitivity and selectivity of the method are increased in comparison with the usual procedure in pure solutions.

Notes: Summary Preliminary investigations have shown, that considerable losses of lead occur during storage of the organic APDC/MIBK-extracts. Therefore, it was necessary to reextract lead into the aqueous phase by nitric acid. Investigations of recoveries confirmed, that extraction and reextraction of lead were quantitative. In this way the concentration of lead is increased by a factor of five. Mean standard deviations for four concentration ranges are given. A detection limit of 0.16 mg of Pb/l is obtained, which is lowered by the preceding enrichment to about 0.03 mg of Pb/l. Details of the procedure are given.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A sensitive method for the extraction and atomic-absorption spectrometric determination of bismuth with zinc dibenzyldithiocarbamate (ZnDBC) has been developed for aluminium alloys and solder alloys. Bismuth is extracted from relatively strong acidic solution into methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as BiDBC complex and its concentration is determined by spraying the MIBK extract into an air-acetylene flame. Iron and copper up to 1 mg resp. 100 μg did not interfere with the extraction of bismuth in the range of 0–80 μg. The limit of detection was about 0.12 ppm in MIBK.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An atomic-absorption spectrophotometric method for the rapid and precise determination of mercury has been studied by using the sodium borohydride tablet reduction and cold-vapour atomicabsorption procedure coupled with amalgamation on gold. The comparison of the sodium borohydride tablet and tin(II) chloride solution reducing systems are described in detail. The use of the sodium borohydride tablet wrapped in a wafer sheet is very simple and gives more precise results. From the comparison of the effect of diverse ions, it is obvious that both reducing systems have their merits and demerits.

Notes: Summary The growth of all grass-clump dwarfs is sensitive to temperature with low temperature giving rise to the grass-clump phenotype and high temperature producing normal phenotype. A continuous temperature of 26°C is required for normal growth of Type 1 dwarfs, a continuous temperature of 21°C is required for normal growth of Ty[e 2 dwarfs and a continuous temperature of 16°C is required for normal growth of Type 3 dwarfs. Genetic studies show that the inheritance of the grass-clump characteristic is due to three complementary dominant genes. The grass-clump growth habit is produced as a result of the temperature sensitivity of the apical meristem. In grass-clump plants low temperature treatment results in the cessation of cell division, DNA synthesis and phospholipid synthesis in the apical meristem. The primary temperature lesion has not been identified. Prolonged low temperature treatment of grass-clump plants results in extensive cell necrosis in a region just below the apical meristem; this cell death results in the permanent inactivation of the apical meristem.

Notes: Summary Photoperiodic respose, as assessed by a regression technique, exhibited complete dominance averaged over the crosses of an eight parent diallel in the vernalized condition. Photoperiodic response as final leaf number for the vernalized 8-hour photoperiod diallel was closely related to photoeriodic response of the regression method. However, the diallel analyses of both sets of data showed little agreement in terms of respectieve array positions. The inheritance of photoperiodic response in diallels using regression values showed little agreement between the vernalized and unvernalized conditions. This difference was postulated to be due to interaction of vernalization and photoperiodic response in the unvernalized situation. In the unvernalized condition photoperiodic response exhibited non-allelic interaction, attributable mainly to the cultivar Pinnacle in general behaviour in its crosses. Its removal gave a situation of high average dominance for photoperiodic response with a clear indication that high photoperiodic sensitivity was dominant to comparative insensitivity. Days to ear emergence (vernalized and 18-hour photoperiod) exhibited non-allelic interaction in its expression, due mainly to the general behaviour of the cultivar Pinnacle in its crosses. Removal of its array gave a situation of a moderately strong degree of overdominance in the expression of days to ear emergence. Maturity differences amongst parents and F1's, vernalized and under 18-hour photoperiod, are postulated to be due to a factor other than vernalization or photoperiodic response beheved to be growth temperature in differentially in fluencing growth and/or developmental rates between genotypes.

Notes: Summary The inheritance of the character complex of naked grain and multiflorous spikelets was studied in a diallel set of crosses comprising five varieties of naked oats (Avena nuda)-As 78, Manu, Caesar, Nuprime and AJ86/2/1-and one variety of husked oats (A. sativa), Maris Oberon. In the F1 generation the distribution of multiflorous spikelets was in all cases similar to that of the mid-parent. Crosses between the varieties of A. nuda produced only naked grain on plants in the F1 and F2 generations, indicating that ‘nakedness’ in the varieties studied was determined by the same loci. The three-gene model proposed by Moule (1972) for the determination of A. nuda characters was inadequate to account for the observed F2 segregation in naked x husked crosses. An extension of this model is proposed to include a third modifying gene, N3, which in the homozygous dominant condition produces the husked phenotype when the principal gene, N, is heterozygous. The model assumes complex epistatic relationships between the three modifying genes N1, N2 and N3. Published information and further experimental data suggest that the genotype NN--N3N3 is uncommon. The expression of the genes determining nakedness was greatly influenced by the environment.

Notes: Summary The gene df (deformed flower), which is expressed as short anther in sensitive cytoplasm, has been incorporated into the trisomic series of S. chacoense Bitt. The cytoplasmic sensitivity and genotypes for the gene df were tested in the original trisomics and their parents. Two diploid parents were found to be homozygous dominant for Df, while one was homozygous recessive. All the parents and trisomics tested had resistant cytoplasm. Six trisomics were heterozygous for df, segregating with a 1:1 ratio when they were crossed to the homozygous testers ([df s]dfdf). When the F1 trisomics (trisomics x [Df r]dfdf) were crossed to the homozygous testers, nine of the 13 trisomics segregated with a 1:1 ratio, three with a 0:1 ratio (all deformed) and one trisomic (V1682.3) with a 2:1 ratio. All the parents of the trisomic V1682.3 were homozygous dominant for Df. This clone is believed to be trisomic for the gene df.

Notes: Summary The 21 intervarietal chromosome substitution lines of the cultivar Hope in Chinese Spring were used to analyse the genetic differences between the two cultivars Hope and Chinese Spring in grain protein content and grain weight. Only one chromosome of ‘Hope, 5D’, significantly influenced grain protein content of ‘Chinese Spring’. Its influence was of only minor effect and was to decrease protein content expression of ‘Chinese Spring’. It has been postulated that the genetic control of protein content, in this instance, is most likely due to many genes each of small effect. Five chromosomes of ‘Hope’ influenced the 1000 grain weight value of normal ‘Chinese Spring’, all increasing its expression. Chromosomes 1A, 4A and 5B were of major effect and 3A and 6A of comparatively minor effect. A minimal estimate of five genes determines the difference in grain size between these cultivars. The possible evolutionary significance of the contribution of the A genome of bread wheat to grain size determination is discussed. On the basis of certain findings of this study, proposals are made for breeding for increased grain size in hexaploid wheat.

Notes: Summary Genetics of field resistance to Alternaria triticina was studied in a diallel set of crosses using ten cultivars of wheat which included eight resistant and two susceptibles. Susceptibility if NP 830 was found to be controlled by a dominant gene and that of NP 891 by two dominant complementary genes. The resistant cultivars NP 824, NP 835, NP 852, C 281, E 5477, E 5550, E 5878 and UP 303 carry the recessive alleles of the genes present in NP 830 and NP 891. All the resistant cultivars used in the study carried identical gene(s) for resistance to A. triticina. The gene(s) responsible for resistance appear to have come from NP 4 and Turkey, both of which seem to have evolved simultaneously in nature. The gene(s) for susceptibility in NP 830 and NP 891 were found to be different. It is assumed that these genes come from either Motia (Triticum durum) or Khapli (T. dicoccum) in NP 830 and from Gaza (T. durum) in NP 891.

Notes: Summary A filbert breeding program was initiated at Oregon State University in 1969 to develop improved cultivars for the Pacific Northwest. Nut traits were evaluated in parents and progenies and the first published inheritance data for this crop species are presented. Correlation coefficients of progeny means and mid-parent values are 0.92 for percent kernel, 0.84 for nut weight, 0.68 for amount of fiber on pellicle, 0.89 for kernel shrinkage, 0.70 for number of nuts per cluster, and 0.34 for estimated husk length. It is concluded that all but one of the evaluated traits is highly heritable and that additive gene action is principally responsible.

Notes: Summary Extensive prebifurcation shooting which terminates in fruits is present in certain cultivars (e.g. Santaka) of Capsicum annuum L. Plants with such architecture setting their fruits along the periphery may therefore be expected to be suitable for mechanical harvesting. From inheritance studies (parents. F1 's and two different F2 populations) it was found that prebifurcation shooting, though a quantitative character, is controlled by relatively few genes. Few genes control main stem length and also leaf number of main stem. Correlations between the above three traits were not significant.

Notes: Summary The Swedish black currant Öjebyn is heterozygous for a dominant gene, designated Sph2, conferring effective resistance against Sphaerotheca mors-uvae at East Malling. Resistance due to the gene M derived from the Finnish Brödtorp is now often only partial and in some progenies is associated with an undesirable spreading habit. Size differences in the satellites of the two nucleolar chromosomes of Brödtorp are not closely associted with differential mildew response in its derivatives.

Notes: Summary Inheritance studies of purple pigmentation in T-160 x AC-177 revealed that purple colour in the coleoptile is based on four genes (Pc 1 , Pc2, I-Pc, Ai-Pc), in the internode on two genes (Pin a1 , Pin a2 ), in the junctura on three genes (Pja, Pjb 1 , Pjb 2 ) and in the apiculus on three genes (Pa, I-P, Ai-P). For panicle density monogenic segregation (Lx) was obtained. Linkage was established between the genes for the apiculus (Pa and Ai-P), panicle density (Lx), the internode (Pin a ), the coleoptile (Ai-Pc) and the junctura (Pja), in that sequence. This linkage group forms part of the IV ‘mp’ group of Misro et al. (1966) which corresponds to the ‘g’ group of japonica. The two anti-inhibitory genes Ai-Pg and Ai-Pau of the linkage group Ai-Pg=Ai-Pc=Ai-Pau reported earlier (Dhullappanavar et al., 1975) are also allotted to the IV linkage group of Misro et al. (1966) since Ai-Pc is placed in that group in the present studies.

Notes: Summary Three dwarf types are described, early dwarf, determined by two recessive genes d 1 and d 3, in the double homozygous state, and an additional recessive gene d 4 and crinkle dwarf and sturdy dwarf each also determined by a recessive gene. The gene l, for pale green lethal was found to be closely linked to the gene V f , for scab resistance. There was evidence of a regrowth promoting gene, G, in some seedlings homozygous for d 1 and d 3.

Notes: Summary Variation in pigment content of the flour of bread wheats (Triticum aestivum L.) was studied in the progenies of F1 and F2 of three crosses and their reciprocals. Reciprocal differences in pigment content were observed in the F1 and F2 means. Low pigment content was found to be partially dominant or over dominant in the crosses studied. There was evidence of substantial mid-parent F1 heterosis in all crosses and betterparent F1 heterosis in three crosses. In the F2, heritability estimates were moderate to high. The F2 frequency distributions were not normal. Estimation of effective factor pairs indicated the presence of one or two major gene pairs involved in the expression of pigment content in the flour. Action of modifiers was also assumed in one cross and its reciprocal. A factorial approach to metrical character suggested that the F2 segregation ratios of low pigment content to high pigment content were 3:1, 15:1, 13:3 and 9:7 for the different crosses. Utilization of the findings in a wheat breeding program is briefly discussed.

Notes: Summary The effects of bulk breeding on yield and its components in two high-yeilding and two low-yielding bean populations when grown at crop densities are interpreted in terms of gene action and selection. There was considerable additive variation in the crosses, dominance effects were variable but tended to be negative. The results were compared with results obtained at low density by another worker with the same populations, and this showed that interpretations of gene action in hybrid vigour depend on the test environment used. The interpretations were also compared with plant breeding interpretations made on the same material (Hamblin, 1977), and it was found that a single pattern of response to natural selection, in plant breeding terms, may be explained by more than one genetic interpretation and, conversely, a single genetic interpretation may result in different patterns of response in plant breeding terms. The value of composite crosses in plant breeding are discussed and it is concluded that there is a greater chance of producing improved lines from a large number of simple crosses than from a smaller number of composite crosses.

Notes: Summary Two self-compatible (sc) dihaploids, G254 and B16, and one self-incompatible (si) dihaploid, G609, from Solanum tuberosum L. were intercrossed reciprocally. Segregation ratios sc : si : pc (pseudo-compatible) were determined in all 6 F1's in three successive years and critically tested and discussed. Genotypes at the S-locus could be assigned to the dihaploid parents and the S-allele on the translocation in sc G254 identified as S 1. Using these genotypes all sc and si genotypes were derived which could be expected in the F1's. Incompatibility groups were detected in each F1 from the results of complete diallels involving si plants. The genotype of each group was identified by test crosses. Compatibility groups could be both detected and identified by crossing in each F1 the sc plants as females with the already identified si sibs. In this way a complete series of 6 si testers and corresponding sc genotypes was obtained involving four alleles at the S-locus and S 1 and S x on the translocation. Certative disadvantage of pollen carrying the translocation could be ruled out as a possible cause of unexpected ratios. The hypothesis of an S-bearing translocation as the cause of self-compatibility could account for all results on the assumption that translocation homozygotes are lethal and the S-allele on the translocation is active in the pollen only.

Notes: Abstract The ecological approach to the etiology of disease involves consideration of the complex interactions of factors related to the host, agent, and environment. Although the ecological approach was developed with regard to infectious diseases, this article suggests its application as a meaningful approach to understanding the etiology of anencephalus and spina bifida. Host, agent, and environmental factors thought to be important in the development of these malformations are discussed. Translation of this conceptual approach into a testable model is needed.

The significance of this is discussed in relation to the possible types of gene action involved in conferring field resistance.

Notes: Abstract Data on eight generations of selective breeding for acoustic priming efficacy are reported. The realized heritability of this trait is approximately 0.2–0.3, indicating that the trait is determined in part by genetic factors. Animals selectively bred for acoustic priming do not differ in terms of first-trial (i.e., non-priming-induced) audiogenic seizures. These data suggest that acoustic priming and first-trial audiogenic seizures are controlled by different genetic mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract A simple olfactometer was constructed for measuring the responses of adultDrosophila to odoriferous substances, and an index (attractability index, AI) is proposed to evaluate the response. Five strains ofDrosophila melanogaster of different geographic origins were tested for their responses to five chemical attractants: ethyl alcohol, acetic acid, lactic acid, ethyl acetate, andn-butyraldehyde. Statistical analysis has shown that the differences of AI among strains are highly significant for all the odorants except acetic acid and that male flies are, in general, less sensitive than females. The number of flies which were inactive in the olfactometer also varied with strain, sex, and odorant, suggesting the involvement of some other behaviors, and this raises some difficulties in interpreting the heterogeneities of AI. Nevertheless, these results suggest that a considerable amount of genetic variation for olfactory response exists in natural population ofD. melanogaster.

Notes: Abstract Males from the fifth selected generation of a selection program for aggressiveness in femaleMus musculus (Ebert and Hyde, 1976) were tested to determine whether male aggressiveness showed a correlated response in selection for female aggressiveness. The results indicated that male aggression had not shown a correlated response. Differences among males from the high, control, and low lines were not statistically significant in one replication and were significant but not in the predicted order in the other replication. There were marginally significant line x sex interactions. The rank correlation between male and female aggression scores was 0.20, which was not significant. The results suggest that male aggressiveness and female aggressiveness are under separate genetic control. Data for generation S5 females are also reported; differences among the high, control, and low lines continue to be significant.

Notes: Abstract Homozygous second chromosome lines were extracted from a natural population ofDrosophila melanogaster and tested for their olfactory responses to ethyl acetate. The chromosome lines were highly heterogeneous for this behavior, and the variability was also specific to other esters and ketones such as ethyl propionate, 2-butanone, 2-pentanone, and 3-pentanone. The responses to these odorants negatively correlated with the response to another odorant, lactic acid. A large part of this odorant-specific variation seemed to be controlled by genes located on the right arm of the second chromosome.

The analysis supports the position that there are two types of retarded individuals, persons retarded as a result of gene or chromosomal anomalies, brain injury, etc., who more frequently occur in the lower-level retardate group, and persons whose retardation represents polygenic segregation, who more frequently occur in the higher-level group.

Notes: Abstract The consistency of twin data with personality questionnaires is examined using all reported twin samples which have been administered the California Psychological Inventory. The scale correlations for the MZ twins are fairly consistent across different samples while the correlations for DZ twins fail to show as much consistency. Differences, moreover, between MZ and DZ correlations fail to replicate across samples. Sampling error and sampling bias are proposed as the major reasons for the inconsistency, and when these factors are taken into account the resulting heritabilities suggest that the CPI scales loading on the extraversion-introversion factor are the most heritable. The implications of sampling error and sampling bias for estimating genetic parameters from correlational twin data, for uncovering differential heritability of personality traits, and for designing future research are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Observations suggesting a genetic basis for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome are reviewed with particular emphasis on the finding of familial aggregation. Studies of both Tourette syndrome and simple tic have found that approximately 30% of patients have a positive family history of tic. The significance of this figure depends on a number of factors, in particular the prevalence of positive tic histories in the population. If the latter figure is 10%, which the best available evidence suggests is a reasonable estimate, approximately 30% of families in the general population would be expected to contain at least one present or former tiquer. It is argued, therefore, that the family aggregation findings in Tourette syndrome do not support the hypothesis that the condition has a significant genetic component. Methodological considerations for future research are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zur Bestimmung der Elementspuren Cd, Co, Fe, In, Mn, Ni, Pb, Tl und Zn in reinem Kupfer und Kupfersalzen wird die Matrix als CuS mit Thioacetamid als Fällungsreagens ausgefällt.
Notes: Abstract For the determination of traces of elements such as Cd, Co, Fe, In, Mn, Ni, Pb, Tl and Zn in pure copper and copper salts the matrix is precipitated as CuS using thioacetamide as precipitating reagent. In solutions containing 3 N hydrochloric acid, the recovery of the elements is ≥90 % (Tl 75%). By addition of HNO3 and evaporation of the filtrate to dryness a trace concentrate is received which is practically free of a salt residue and in which the preconcentrated elements are determined by flame AAS. The relative standard deviation s/¯x is generally about 0.03. Using samples of 1 g of copper the limit of detection for different elements was found to be between 0.2 and 3 ppm.

Notes: Abstract A flameless method for AAS is described, which can be used for micro- and local analysis of solid samples. The evaporation of chosen areas of the sample is achieved with a continuous wave ion laser. The evaporated mass of each measurement is about 1 μg, which comes from an area of 0.008 mm2 from the surface of the specimen. The cadmium contents of samples of vanadium, lead and uranium oxides containing different concentrations of cadmium were determined. The sensitivity of the cadmium analysis is 2.1 · 10−9 g of Cd/1% absorption and the detection limit is found to be 4.8 · 10−10 g of cadmium. The description and interpretation of a raster microanalysis as an application of this method follows: 57 point measurements from an area of 14 mm2 are used to construct concentration contours of the doping element. Two graphic representations are suggested. The advantages of this method are compared with other known techniques.

Notes: Abstract The weighing of ore samples to be analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry is somewhat problematical at sea. To evade the weighing, tests have been made to try out an indirect determination of the mass of the sample by determining a “reference element” by means of isotope fluorescence analysis. The analysis of manganese nodules from the Pacific Ocean, containing 15–30% of Mn and 0.5–1.5% of Ni and Cu, is quoted as an illustration. It has been shown that the two latter elements can be determined in this way with an accuracy of at least 10% rel.

Notes: Abstract Hydrophilic macroporous glycolmethacrylate-glycolmonomethacrylate copolymers with 8-hydroxyquinoline, bound via the azo-group, possess a high equilibration rate for exchange processes (2–5 min). The sorption isotherms of Pb2+ and Cu2+ have been studied (sorption capacity of 0.2–0.3 mMol · g−1. The partition coefficients for Pb2+ and Cu2+ (about 105 for unsaturated exchanger) are lowered in dependence of the exchanger saturation (about 102 for 90% saturation). The use of microcolumns (total volume of the exchanger 0.02 ml) for the separation and enrichment of traces of heavy metals in ng-amounts for the subsequent flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy is proposed. The determination of Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb (5×10−7 to 5x10−5%) in a high purity ammonium fluoride is described as an example.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Beeinflussung der atomabsorptionsspektroskopischen Rhodiumbestimmung ist gering.
Notes: Summary The influence on the determination of rhodium is only slight. In comparison with the elements Pt and Pd the measurements are most exact in the absence of foreign ions. Addition of uranium or lanthanum as spectroscopic buffers causes an increase in sensitivity. The interfering effects of palladium and platinum cannot be eliminated by correcting equations. However, with the addition of uranium as a buffer the effects are minimized and the remaining influence can be corrected by means of equations.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An atomic-absorption spectrophotometric method for the rapid and sensitive determination of arsenic, antimony, and selenium with the hydride-argon/hydrogen flame system has been studied. The comparison of the zinc tablet combined with stannous chloride and potassium iodide, and the sodium borohydride tablet reduction systems are described. The sensitivities and precisions of both reduction systems are estimated to be nearly the same. From the results of the comprehensive study on interferences, the zinc system is concluded to be more selective than the sodium borohydride system, which is especially true for arsenic.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Aus Reinst-Cadmium können durch partielles Lösen der Matrix die Elementspuren Ag, Au, Bi, Co, Cu, Fe, In, Ni, Pb, Pd und Sn angereichert werden.
Notes: Abstract Trace elements such as Ag, Au, Bi, Co, Cu, Fe, In, Ni, Pb, Pd, and Sn can be preconcentrated from high-purity cadmium by partial dissolution of the matrix. The samples are coated by a thin film of mercury and dissolved in hydrobromic acid up to a small residue. In this residue the trace elements are enriched with recoveries of more than 95%. The elements are determined by AAS. For 10 g Cd the factor of enrichment is about 102, and the limits of detection are in the range of 0.1 ppm. The relative standard deviation was calculated to be about 5%. Reasons influencing the recovery of the trace elements are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The intensity of the chromium signal in AAS depends in a very complex manner strongly on the valency of the Cr and the flame temperature. It is furthermore influenced by potassium, if present. The best way to overcome all these interferences is to use the nitrous oxide flame and to “buffer” the solution with a higher concentration of potassium.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the first part different methods for studying interferences of the time dependent signal in flameless AAS are presented with emphasis on factorial designs in experimentation as opposed to the one-factor-at-a-time approach. An example of the statistical computations necessary for interpretation of a multifactor experiment is worked out and discussed in detail with special consideration of the explanation of first-order interactions. The influence of instrumentation upon determinations in the graphite furnace is dealt with in the second part: The temperature in the graphite furnace was measured with a pyrometer, a thermocouple and a Hg-thermometer. The results obtained with the pyrometer were in good agreement with the values given by the manufacturer. The stability of the AAS system was checked and found to be sufficient for the investigation of interferences.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Interferences in the flameless determination of cadmium using the HGA 72 were studied for HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, HClO4 and HF and found to be depending on different thermal pretreatment. The interferences of cations were much smaller than for anions. The results are discussed with respect to thermal stability as well as atomization rate of the compositions under investigation. Special emphasis is put upon the presence of interactions between interferents, which in some cases can be used to eliminate interferences.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Interferences in the flameless determination of lead using the HGA 72 were studied for HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, H3PO4, HClO4, HF and for a number of cations. In certain instances interferents in just 1000-fold concentration over lead are shown to cause deviations in the lead signal. Many of the interferences are matrix-dependent themselves and can be reduced by matrix variations. Optimization of the thermal pretreatment can be used effectively to reduce random error and/or systematic errors. The thermal stability of lead compounds in the graphite furnace was sufficient for charring procedures up to 900° C for 20 s.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Mercury is adsorbed on cellulose powder and activated charcoal. The contents of the adsorber are burnt in the oxy-hydrogen flame, and the mercury determined by the flameless atomic absorption procedure. The method is applicable to mercury present as metallic vapour, organo mercurical compounds and particulate matter containing adsorbed mercury compounds. The combustion step eliminates all possible non-atomic absorption interferences in the measuring procedure and ensures quantitative recovery of the mercury from the adsorption material. Quantitative adsorption recovery over a wide range of flow rate from 2–200 l/h allows the use of small battery operated pumps for personal monitoring, or vacuum pumps for high speed and large volume sampling. The range of flow rate makes isokinetic sampling conditions possible.

Notes: Summary A modified automated cold vapour AAS procedure using an AutoAnalyzerII® system is described. The procedure permits the determination of inorganic as well as total mercury and enables to perform up to 120 analyses/day. The enrichment of mercury as amalgam on silver wool, followed by a fast thermal decomposition with the aid of a graphite cuvette enables a detection limit of 0.01 ng/ml sample solution. The relative standard deviation for homogeneous samples and the overall procedure is ≤15%. During the analysis of certified standard reference materials no systematic deviations were observed. The average total (2σ) error for a single sample should therefore not exceed 30%.

Notes: Abstract The determination of small and smallest amounts of copper in steel and other metal alloys by atomic absorption spectroscopy was investigated. It has been found, that the interferences caused by accompanying elements in the determination in aqueous solution with the flame can be completely removed by extracting the copper with Pb-DDTC in chloroform and determining this extract with the heated graphite atomizer. Moreover, it was recognised, that working with the heated graphite atomizer in organic solutions shows great advantages compared with the flame, because any solvent may be used. The methods of continuous variation by Job and the molar ratio by Yoe and Jones for the determination of the complex stoichiometry were transferred to the system Cu-DDTC by working with the heated graphite atomizer.

Notes: Abstract The power of detection of flame AAS for trace elements decreases considerably in presence of manganese. For the purity control of manganese and manganese compounds, therefore, it is necessary to separate the traces from the main component of the samples. For that purpose the traces were complexed by 1,10-phenanthroline and coprecipitated by silver iodide as trace collector. To receive a trace solution of 10 ml being free of manganese the filtered AgI was boiled with HNO3. The enriched elements (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Bi and Tl) were determined by flame AAS. Using samples of 5 to 10 g of manganese or manganese compounds of different stages of oxidation the limits of detection of the various elements were found to be in a range between 0.01 and 1 ppm. By evaporation of the trace solution down to 1 ml and determination of the traces by the “injection method” of flame AAS limits of detection are obtained between 0.007 and 0.1 ppm.

Notes: Abstract After oxidizing the sample to H3PO4 with HNO3/HCl, the cations are absorbed on a strong acid cation exchange resin. They are eluted with HCl and are determined by AAS. Under the most commonly found impurities of high-purity red phosphorus, the alkali and alkaline earth elements and most of the heavy metals can be separated. Fe and As are not separated, Al is partially separated. Fe and Al are isolated by extraction of their 8-quinolinol compounds. As is extracted from HBr with benzene and is determined by means of the AsH3-method.

Notes: Abstract With selected elements (Fe, Co, Ni, Ag and Cd), the serious systematic errors inherent in flameless atomic absorption spectrometry are demonstrated and their origins are discussed. Besides the parameters of the temperature program and the inert gas stream, the type and structure of the graphite, as well as its reactivity have a decisive influence on the sensitivities and limits of detection of the technique. Depression of the signal is observed with the use of strongly acid solutions and it has been attempted to explain this in connection with the reactivity of the graphite. The influence of organic solvents and organic solutions of complexes with dithizone, NH4-DDTC and APDC on the atomization have been investigated with simplified examples. It can be presumed that the resulting depression of the signal is due to losses by the formation of volatile metal-organic compounds at temperatures above 500° C. Particularly large are the losses in the presence of hydrocarbon halides as can be demonstrated by the reaction of Fe, Cd, Co, Ni, and Ag with chloroform.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary For the determination of cadmium in culture water from toxicological experiments with marine organisms direct flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry seems to be an appropriate method, because it is less complicated than any combination with an extraction method. Unfortunately, it cannot be applied in the μg·l−1-range without modifications, because matrix effects lead to unacceptable variations in the results. It was found that these difficulties can be overcome by the addition of ammonium peroxodisulphate and sulphuric acid. A routine method basing on this effect has been developed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A new method for determining the lead content of plants has been developed. The dried, ground sample of a plant is first heated in oxygen to decompose the organic material. The lead is then reduced in hydrogen to elemental lead which sublimes and condenses in a capillary. The sublimed lead is dissolved in nitric acid and the lead concentration is determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Notes: Summary Silicic acid resp. silicon can be quantitatively dissolved in a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid in open plastic containers. The solution is suitable for quantitative analyses of the silicon content by atomic absorption spectrometry. It can be shown experimentally that the results are not influenced by the presence of other elements in the solution. A comparison has been made between the classical method of silicon analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry using samples containing readily soluble silicic acid and also natural ores which are rather difficult to dissolve.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Beside ionic impurities, DI water contains non-ionic compounds, which mainly consist of the oxyhydrates of the elements Fe, Ti, and Si present as colloids. This paper describes an analytical method for Fe, which is based on a simple enrichment by evaporation and the subsequent determination by flameless AAS. It is demonstrated that DI water systems, which are mainly based on coprecipitation and ion exchange, remove the Fe from the main water only to a small extent. The Fe content in DI water shows significant variations.

Notes: Summary A procedure is proposed for the enrichment of 10 elements from chromium(III) salts within only one separation step. Hexamethyleneammonium-hexamethylenedithiocarbamate is used as reagent and the trace compounds are sorbed on activated charcoal. Treatment with nitric acid yields a solution which is practically free from chromium. The traces are determined by flame atomic-absorption spectrometry.

Notes: Summary The sorption is performed at a sample-sorbent ratio of 103 ml/g using the simplest experimental technique: shaking for 1 h, decantation, centrifugation. High concentrations of ammonium, alkali and alkaline earth salts do not interfere. All bound metals, except Co, can be reversibly eluted by small acid volumes in a batch or from a column. The eluted metals are quantitatively determined by spectrophotometry (U) or atomic absorption (Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb).
