Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die Kinetik der Bildung und Transformation von Calciumphosphat-Niederschlägen wurde bei 25°C untersucht.

The phosphate solutions were preadjusted to pH 7.4. Changes of the pH and turbidity of the solutions were followed simultaneously as a function of time. Precipitates were isolated at various time intervals and characterized by different physicochemical methods. Initially a precipitate with a molar Ca/P ratio of 1.5, amorphous to X-ray and electron diffraction was formed. IR spectra indicated the presence of PO 4 3− and HPO 4 2− ions. After a period of metastability, precipitation of a crystalline material within or upon the amorphous matter occurred. Twenty four hours after sample preparation the precipitates showed mainly the characteristics of octacalcium phosphate.

Notes: Abstract  We examined the utility of otolith minor and trace element chemistry, assayed with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), as a means of delineating population structure in the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus). We characterized the elemental composition of otoliths collected in 1993 from three locations in Exuma Sound, Bahamas and from Glover Reef, Belize in 1995. A single location in Exuma Sound was sampled in 1994 to test temporal variability in otolith composition. Five elements (Ca, Zn, Sr, Ba and Pb) were routinely detected, at levels significantly above background, by solution-based ICP-MS. Results from analysis of variance of elemental data, expressed as a ratio to Ca, indicated that there were no significant differences among the Exuma locations for any element, but significant variability was found between Glover Reef and the pooled Exuma localities for Zn/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios. Significant inter-annual differences at one Exuma Sound location was restricted to Ba/Ca ratios. Discriminant function analysis correctly classified 86% and 95% of the Belize and pooled Exuma sites, respectively. Otoliths from Belize were characterized by low Zn/Ca and high Ba/Ca and Pb/Ca ratios compared to otoliths from fish collected in Exuma Sound. Although differences in Ba levels may be related to upwelling at Glover Reef, more data are needed to definitely link otolith composition with regional differences in water chemistry.

Notes: Abstract Unwashed samples of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) contain an irreplaceable labile fraction, rich in acid phosphate and low in Ca/P ratio, which is irreversibly lost during the washing process. Native ACP precipitated in the pH range 6.6–10.6 varied in Ca/P molar ratio from 1.18 to 1.50 and in HPO 4 2− /total P from 33.0% to 10.1%. At pH 7.40, native ACP had a Ca/P molar ratio of 1.36±0.02 and contained 22.8 (±2.2)% HPO 4 2− . Unwashed precipitate data could not be attributed to either trapped supernatant Ca2+ and HPO 4 2− or extraneous Na+, Cl−, and CO 3 2− . The amorphous calcium phosphates are recognized as a class of salts having variable chemical but identical glass-like, physicochemical properties. Non-crystalline CaHPO4·xH2O may also be an ACP, especially during early formative stages. At physiological pH, ACP transforms to small platy crystals containing large amounts of readily-replaceable acid phosphate. Washing this surface layer produced chemical alterations in the resultant crystals; unwashed crystals had poorly-crystalline apatitic diffraction patterns but exhibited poorly-resolved infrared spectra intermediate between apatite and octacalcium phosphate. Structural explanations for all these phenomena are discussed, and revised bone and cartilage amorphous/crystalline mineral compositions have been re-calculated.

Notes: Abstract During the unusual molt sequence of the fresh-water isopod,Lirceus brachyrus (Harger), the posterior half of the exoskeleton is shed 24 hours before the anterior half. At the half-molt stage, occurs in the posterior part while the anterior portion is in a pre-molt condition. The percentage difference in calcium in the two halves at half-molt and full-molt is22 (p〈0.01) and33 (p〈0.01) respectively, an indication that calcium is sequestered during The rapidity of remineralization is illustrated by the fact that the total mineral content doubles in the posterior part between half and full molt and in the anterior half between the end of molt and one day after ecdysis. Calcium carbonate in the calcite cystalline form was demonstrated by electron diffraction of thin sections of the integument.

Notes: Abstract A mineral specimen from Burgess, Canada, proved upon chemical and crystallographic analyses to be an exceptionally pure sample of fluorapatite. The over-all composition corresponds to $$(Ca^{2 + } )_{9.98} (Sr^{2 + } ,Na^ + ,K^ + ,Mg^{2 + } )_{0.02} (PO_4^{3 - } )_{5.98} (HCO_3^ - ,CO_3^{2 - } )_{0.02} (F^ - )_2 $$ . The crystallographic c-axis was determined to be 6.865 Å, and the a-axis 9.374 A. Exchange data obtained by employing45Ca,32P, and18F indicate the presence of large crystallites with a specific surface of the order of 1 m2/g. It is indicated that the physical interpretation of the exchange process does not require the existence of separate departments, each with its own kinetic factor, but that the exchange may be simply related to the exponential change in the free energy of the reaction. For the reaction $$(Ca)_5 (PO_4 )_3 OH_{solid} + (F^ - ) \rightleftarrows (Ca)_5 (PO_4 )_3 F_{solid} + (OH^ - )$$ the thermodynamic constant has been calculated to be 101.26, implying that fluorapatite always will form at the expense of hydroxyapatite under physiologic conditions. This transformation will be furthered by lowering the pH.

Notes: Abstract We study the interactions of chemistry and turbulent mixing of tracersin the convective boundary layer with a second-order closure model, including higher order chemistry terms. In order to limit the number of predictive equations we prescribe the profiles for ¯w¯Θ, ¯w¯θ ¯θ and the lengthscale l. However, for model validation we treat temperature and humidity asinert tracers, and compare the results with profiles observed during theAir Mass Transformation Experiment, and with similarity expressions for thesurface layer. We find good agreement of the mean profiles, but the (co-)variances are slightly underpredicted. Furthermore, the model usesdiagnostic equations expressing third moments of concentration in terms ofsecond moments and their vertical derivatives. They are compared withlarge-eddy model results, showing good agreement and, therefore, thesimplifications are justified. The model is applied to the transport of two gases subject to one bimolecular reaction. The importance of concentration correlations on themean transformation rate is studied. For two gases diffusing in oppositedirections we find for moderate and fast chemistry a 50% and90% decreased transformation rate due to the negatively correlatedconcentrations. These values are similar to large-eddy results of Schumannand Sykes et al. For two bottom-up tracers we find that the covariance ofboth reactive species is either positive or negative, increasing or reducingthe effective transformation rate depending on the Damköhler number (the ratio of the turbulent and the chemistry timescale). A significantdirect influence of chemistry on the flux divergence is found in bothcases. According to the model the effective transport to mid-levels of theboundary layer is increased when two reactive tracers diffuse in oppositedirections, and decreased in the case of two bottom-up tracers.

Notes: The market development of bisphenol-A-polycarbonate has shown higher growth than any other engineering thermoplastic. The reasons can be found in the permanent improvement of the cost/performance-relationship and in the technical use of the variability of the basic structure. Incorporation of specific monomer units leads to tailor-made properties for a wide range of applications, as for example medical devices, electronic parts and glazing. This process has not yet slowed down, rather it is accelerated by new results from research and development. The improvement of flaw behavior and pit replication for new grades of materials for the next generation of compact discs, new grades that can be sterilized by γ-radiation without degradation and the microstructuring by low-energy laser systems are examples for the ongoing expansion of polycarbonate applications. Surface modification by hardcoatings with nanosized particles will allow to enter the fast growing market of glazing.

Notes: Polyamide, polyester and polyoxymethylene having presently a worldwide sales volume of 2,4 million tons a year are important engineering thermoplastics. Based on their special property profiles they are mainly used in the automotive and electronic industry for high performance functional parts. This contribution presents polymerisation processes, properties, and selected new developments for these polymer classes.Semiaromatic polyamides due to their dimensional stability and thermal resistance lend themselves to applications which were so far reserved for thermosets or metals. Glass fiber reinforce polyamides designed to have the highest possible heat ageing resistance can take important functions under the hood. A polyamide blend used as a material for exterior body parts is key to light weight cars with strongly reduced fuel consumption. Halogene free flame retardant polyamide increases fire safety and environmental safety in flame sensitive applications.Polybutyleneterephthalate as the technically most important polyester offers new perspectives in blends with amorphous polymers leading to lower distortion and better surface quality in glass fiber reinforced parts. Polybutylenenaphthalate is widening the range of application of polyesters towards higher temperatures. Copolyesters derived from polybutyleneterephthalate are biologically degradable and are therefore promising materials for fermentable foils.Polyoxymethylene copolymers show an outstanding combination of stiffness, dimensional stability, friction and wear as well as resistance against hot water and fuel.As a result of their excellent properties and the existing potential for further improvements polyamide, polyester and polyoxymethylene will continue to grow above average in the future.

Notes: The world-wide production of polyurethanes has exceeded 6 mio. metric tons in 1994. Compared with the produced amounts of large-scale thermoplastics such as PE, PVC, PP and PS, polyurethanes keep the 5th place.Polyurethanes (PUR) are segmented polymers, which can be synthesized from preformed building blocks in a modular unit construction system. The chemical modules and the various possibilities of combination will be discussed here.Tailor-made polyurethane materials can be divided into two main-fields of application: foams and compact PUR.The main constituents of polyurethane materials are diisocyanates and polyols. These key- chemicals are well characterised with respect to their technological, economical and ecological properties. Taking into account the availability, the masses of production and the experiences that have been collected with the PUR main constituents, these PUR precursors seem to be very mature already. In contrast to this, the PUR-materials made from these building blocks still offer numerous novel problem-solutions, resulting from the variability of the diisocyanate-poly-addition reaction: PUR materials are most commonly segmented into several phases. The formation of hard- and softsegments can be easily demonstrated by looking at thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). A deeper understanding of this phase separation and the molecular organisation within these materials promises to realize prospectic polymeric architectures with new and improved properties. PUR materials will still be able to offer new answers to future requirements in balancing economical and ecological needs. By looking at the life-cycles of soft and hard-foams, polyurethane-coatings and thermoplastic PUR-elastomers, this contribution will adress the question: “Is PUR-chemsitry still a challenging field?”

Description / Table of Contents: Die Zugabe von 10-20 Gew.-% Kaliumnitrat (KN03) zu Polyamid 6 (PA 6) vermindert die Brennbarkeit des Polymeren.
Notes: The addition of 10-20 wt.-% of potassium nitrate (KNO3) to polyamide 6 (PA 6) improves the fire retardance of the polymer. The thermal decomposition behaviour of the PA 6/KN03-mixture was studied using thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal volatilisation analysis. Solid products of the thermal decomposition of the mixture were analysed by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance. It was found that KNO, prevents flowing and dripping of the melt and promotes charring on the surface of the polymer which decreases its fire hazard and improves its fire retardance. On the other hand, KNO3 exothermally reacts with PA 6 in the condensed phase and supplies oxygen to the gas phase which increases the combustibility of PA 6. The mechanism of the chemical interaction of KN03 with PA 6 is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Der Einfluß einer Beimischung von Tricalciumphosphat (TCP), Hydroxyethylmethacrylat (HEMA) und Ethylenglycoldimethacrylat (EGDMA) auf die Eigenschaften eines chirurgischen Knochenzements wurde untersucht.
Notes: The effects of the addition of tricalcium phosphate (TCP), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) on the properties of standard surgical Simplex-P radiopaque bone cement have been investigated. The fracture surface after tensile test was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The influence of these components on the temperature rise during polymerization was investigated. It was found that the tensile strength, the bending strength, and the compressive strength decreased with increasing TCP content, whereas the inverse was observed for the Young's modulus. The tensile strength slightly increased with increasing HEMA content and then it levelled off when the HEMA content was higher than 15 wt.-%. It seemed that there were maximum tensile, bending and compressive strengths when 2 wt.-% EGDMA (in HEMA) was added. Polymerization occurred more rapidly when HEMA and EGDMA were added, whereas the inverse result was found with TCP.

Notes: Polyurethane elastomers were synthesized based on polyols such as poly(caprolactonediol) and poly(tetramethylene glycol), diisocyanates such as diphenylmethane-4,4′-diisocyanate (MDI) and dicyclohexylmethane-4,4′-diisocyanate (HMDI), and two dihydroxynaphthalenes (DHNs) and their brominated derivatives used as chain extenders. The effects of the chemical structures of the chain extenders on the physical and thermal properties of the polyurethanes were investigated. Because of the higher degree of phase mixing of the 1,5-DHN unit, the 1,5-DHN-based polyurethanes have higher Tg values and higher dynamic properties than 2,7-DHN-based polyurethanes. Introduction of bromine atoms increased the flame retardance. However, the large free volume of bromine atoms restricted the rotation of DHNs, thus, directly decreasing the degree of phase-mixing and crystallinity of the polyurethanes. Introducing bromine atoms also decreased the mechanical and dynamic properties and increased the solubility of the polyurethanes.

Notes: Waxy monomers and crosslinkers, respectively, were synthesized from commercially available waxes by esterification with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, glycerol dimethacrylate, or glycidyl methacrylate or by functionalization with 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate. The resulting opaque methacrylates with melting points between 45 and 80°C were polymerized in bulk and in toluene solution in presence of free radical initiators. The obtained polymers were characterized by a broad molecular weight distribution. Opposite to the bulk polymerization, the double bond conversion in solution polymerization is nearly quantitative. The observed volume shrinkage during polymerization is very low due to the high molecular weight of the monomers. Polymerizates containing crosslinking comonomers exhibit improved mechanical stability.

Description / Table of Contents: The stabilized free-radical precipitation polymerization of the cationic monomer N-(2-methacryloyloxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylbenzylammonium chloride (MADAMBQ) in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride was studied by reaction calorimetry. Poly(ethylene oxide) was used as stabilizer. The rate of polymerization reaches its maximum immediately after initiation and remains nearly constant up to 50 % conversion followed by a decrease that could be described by a first order kinetics. The particles formed are approximately 1 to 30 μm in diameter and are stable over a period of several months.A model based on the theory of homogeneous particle nucleation is suggested to describe the kinetic course of polymerization, taking into account the rate of polymerization in both phases. With the assumption that the concentration of monomer in the phases is determined by a Nernst distribution law, the kinetics of the early stage of polymerization can be modelled reasonably well. The solution polymerization and the unstabilized precipitation polymerization of MADAMBQ was also studied.

Notes: Cellulose powder obtained from oak furfural lignocellulose by nitration reaction was grafted with acrylamide using a radical initiation. The grafting reactions were carried out and compared both in presence and in absence of a continuous external magnetic field with the intensity extended between 0.15-0.35 T. The effect of monomer and initiator concentration, time and temperature of reaction and magnetic field intensity onto the grafting process were examined. It was observed that the presence of a magnetic field leads to a significant increase of the graft conversion.

Notes: Poly(L-lactic acid) is a biocompatible polyester, semicrystalline, thermoplastic, with low versatility in mechanical properties. To overcome this problem, a reactive blending procedure was performed by grafting an acrylic rubber, n-butyl acrylate, via water suspension polymerization onto poly(L-lactic acid) dissolved in an organic solvent. It was possible to isolate the copolymeric phase formed from the two polymers and characterize it by using NMR and DSC techniques. Mechanical tests on blends gave no satisfactory response, probably because the rubbery phase is composed essentially of viscous linear macromolecules, not able to perform elastic properties. Work is in progress to modify the synthetic pathway to incorporate diacrylates in order to realize a rubbery phase at least partially cross-linked.

Description / Table of Contents: Zur Entwicklung von neuen Styrol-Butadien-Kautschuken (SBRs) für Reifenanwendungen sind mehrere Arten von Zinn-Polymer-Bindungen (Styryl-, Butadienyl-, Isoprenyl- and α-Methylstyryl-Zinn) sowohl in linearen als auch in verzweigten Ketten untersucht worden.
Notes: Following the development of new SBRs for tyre applications, several kinds of tin-polymer bonds (styryl-, butadienyl-, isoprenyl- and α-methylstyryltin) have been studied, in both branched and linear chains.Dynamic-mechanical properties of the carbon black vulcanizates have been analyzed to establish a relationship between structural parameters of polymers and compound properties. The filler-polymer interaction parameter, defined by a ratio of mechanical and dynamic terms, has been used for the evaluation of the compounds. The introduction of different types of tin-polymer bonds, in branched and linear chains of the SBRs, implies an improvement in the hysteresis properties of the vulcanizates as well as a modification of the interaction parameter.

Notes: Copoly(amide-ethers) containing two types of tertiary amine units were made as antistatic modifiers for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers. The filaments of the copolymers were melt-spun and reacted with three alkylating agents in order to quaternize the tertiary amine into a sulfo-betaine, a carbobetaine, and an ammonium ion. The apparent electric resistivity of the filaments was greatly reduced by this reaction, being in the range of 106 to 108 Ω/cm. However, because these quaternized copolymers incurred decomposition during blend spinning with PET, a blend PET fiber containing one type of copoly(amide-ether) was melt-spun and subjected to quaternization of the amino groups as well as to surface crosslinking with various alkylating and epoxy agents. The quaternized blend fibers obtained showed improved antistatic properties compared with the original blend fiber. Particularly, the fibers crosslinked with epoxy compounds were found to have the best antistatic properties that had ever been attained with this type of modification. The antistatic properties were retained even after dyeing, because both hydrophilic and ionic groups had been effectively immobilized on the surface. Since this quaternization and crosslinking could be conducted on-line with spinning and drawing within a short reaction time, this modification technique is called “spin-finishing method”, which should be superior to the conventional methods in terms of cost performance and productivity.

Notes: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films were treated with fuming nitric acid (FNA). The surface characteristics and also the insertion of polar groups like on the etched LDPE film surface were measured by SEM, IR and XPS analyses, respectively. The mechanical performance of a laminate of the etched film with epoxy resin and also the printability of the etched film surface were tested and compared with the unetched sample. The surface roughening and the presence of polar groups enhance the mechanical strength of the laminate of FNA-treated film due to mechanical interlocking and chemical interaction. The printability of the treated film surface is also superior to that of the untreated LDPE film surface.

Description / Table of Contents: This paper reports on polymer membranes characterized by a surface layer of hydroxyalkyl derivatives of cellulose. Water compatible polymers like hydroxyalkyl derivatives of cellulose are preferably those exhibiting good chemical stability and desired membrane characteristics. Normally, water-compatible polymers used in the coating solutions must be rendered water-insoluble after coating. By adapting crosslinking conditions on separation problems, the membranes are useful for many processes in the fields of biotechnology, food and chemical industry. The membranes presented here possess the advantage of being highly resistant to chemical and biological degradation and, hence, have long lifetimes under many process conditions.

Notes: Polysulfides were synthesized with high yield by high-temperature solution polycondensation of 4,4′-biphenyldithiol with selected aliphatic and aromatic-aliphatic hydrocarbon dihalides. To determine the optimum polycondensation conditions, the influence of the following factors on reduced viscosity and yield was studied: type of organic solvent, type of hydrogen halide acceptor, concentration of reagents, reaction temperature, and reaction time. A thorough examination was carried out only for the polycondensation of dithiol with bis(4-chloromethylphenyl)methane chosen as model system. The structures of the polysulfides were confirmed by elemental analysis, X-ray analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The temperature of initial decomposition, the percentage of mass loss, and the temperature of the fastest decomposition, process were determined from curves of differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. Some physicochemical, mechanical and electrical properties were determined. The highest thermal and chemical resistance has been found for the polysulfide obtained from 4,4′-biphenyldithiol and 4,4′-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl, probably because of the predominantly aromatic structure.

Notes: By incorporating poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate) (poly(St-co-MMA)) structure units covalently into the SiO2 glass network via a sol-gel approach, three organic-inorganic hybrid materials (PMMA-SiO2, PS - SiO2, and poly(St-co-MMA) - SiO2) have been prepared. The three hybrid sol-gel materials were used as filler (up to 60 wt.-%) for dental composite resins. The effect of the three filler materials on several mechanical properties of the dental composite resins was investigated. The hardness of the filled dental composites increased with increasing filler content, whereas the bending strength decreased.
Notes: Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu complexes of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) and cresol novolac, which are precursors for high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) and Cu complexes of those polymers were investigated by ESR spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. In the PMAA samples three different kinds of Cu2+ species were detected: i) Cu2+ pairs, ii) isolated Cu2+ ions and iii) Cu2+ clusters. While Cu2+ pairs are the main species at low Cu concentrations, clusters become dominant at high Cu contents. In the novolac samples Cu2+ was only detected in isolated sites and clusters. The introduction of Cu ions lowered the thermal stability of the polymers and led to a stepwise decomposition. In the PMAA samples the first decomposition step at ≈ 220°C is caused by the Cu2+ pair complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: Neodymchlorid-2-ethylhexanolate mit der allgemeinen Formel NdCl3 · nL wurden durch eine Liganden-Austauschreaktion zwischen Neodymchloridisopropanolat (I) und 2-Ethylhexanol (EH) hergestellt.
Notes: Neodymium chloride 2-ethylhexanolates of the general formula NdCl3 · nL were prepared by ligand exchange reaction between neodymium chloride ispropanolate (I) and 2-ethylhexanol (EH). These hexanolates, NdCl3 · 1.5 EH (II) and NdCl3 · 2.5 EH (III), were characterized by elemental analysis and gravimetry. The catalytic activity of these hexanolates in combination with triethyl aluminium in the homopolymerization of 1,3-butadiene was studied, and the activity was found to be higher with III than II. The conversions increased with increasing the catalyst and co-catalyst concentrations and the temperature, whereas the intrinsic viscosity decreased. The conversions and the intrinsic viscosity decreased. The conversions and the intrinsic viscosity increased with reaction time. The cis-1,4 structure was influenced by variation in temperature and co-catalyst concentration, however, the total cis-1,4 structure was always more than 99% with very low vinyl content (〉1%). Addition of an external electron donor decreased the cis-1,4 content to 87%.

Notes: The MgCl2 supports for an ethylene polymerization catalyst were prepared by the recrystallization method using methanol as a solvent. The effects of different desolvation methods of the recrystallized MgCl2-alcohol adduct on the morphological characteristics of the catalysts were examined. The desolvation method greatly affects the characteristics of the catalyst. The prepared catalysts had different Ti/Mg ratios with respect to both surface content and entire catalyst particles. Considering Ti distribution and activity profiles, not only the polymerization conditions but also the Ti distribution on the catalyst appear to be an important factor which affects the bulk density of the polymers.

Notes: Mechanical and structural properties of blends of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C) with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were investigated using tensile and bending testing, scanning electron microscopy and transition electron microscopy. The incorporation of minor amounts of UHMWPE (2 wt.-%) into PES-C has a reinforcement effect. With higher concentrations of UHMWPE, the mechanical properties decrease gradually. Structural studies demonstrated that the blends are multiphasic in the whole composition range. The minor UHMWPE, dispersed uniformly and oriented along the flow direction, as well as the strong interfacial adhesion contribute to the increase of the mechanical performance of the blends. The domain size of the UHMWPE phase was found to increase with the increase of its concentration.

Notes: A redox copolymer, macroporous poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) (S/DVB) resin having N-bromosulfonamide groups, was used for removal of cyanide ions from aqueous solutions. This resin contains active bromine in functional groups (1.86 mmol g-1, i. e. 3.72 meq g-1) and shows oxidative properties. It was employed in static and flow system for oxidation of cyanide ions to non-toxic compounds. The reactions were carried out in aqueous media containing 26-2600 mg L-1 CN- at different pH values. The data showed that the resin having active bromine easily oxidized cyanides, forming cyanates being 1000-times less toxic than cyanides. In contact with the resin the concentration of cyanides in tested solutions dropped below 0.05 mg L-1 CN-. During the oxidation processes the —SO2NBrNa groups transform to —SO2NH2 groups. They can be reactivated by use of sodium hypochlorite and bromide solutions. As an alternative to oxidation of cyanides by N-bromosulfonamide resin, the oxidation of these ions by N-chlorosulfonamide resin with addition of a small amount of bromides was examined.

Notes: Novel Polyester glycols with alkyl side groups were used for the improvement of thermal stability and hydrolytic stability of polyester urethane elastomers. The novel polyester glycols used are poly( β -methyl- δ -valerolactone)glycol (PMVL), poly(3-methyl pentamethylene adipate) glycol (PMPA), poly(nonamethylene-co-2-methyl octamcthylene carbonate) gycol (PNCO). A mixture of PNCO and poly(dimethyl siloxane)gycol (PNCO/PDMS) was also used. Polyurethane network elastomers were prepared from 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (or 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate), and a mixture of 1,4-butane diol and trimethylol propane by a prepolymer method. Mechanical properties, Tg, thermal stability, and hydrolytic stability were measured. Morphology were also measured by means of polarizing microscopy, dynamic viscoelastometer, and ESR. The properties of novel polyurethane elastomers have good mechanical properties comparable to those of the general purpose polyester urethanes, and better thermal and hydrolytic stability than PTMG-based polyurethane. These polyurethane elastomers were exposed in out door during 2 year in Nagasaki, JAPAN. The novel polyurethane clastomers held alomost constant values for gel fraction, swelling ratio, relative modulus during 12 months, while poly(oxytetramethylene oxide)-based polyurethane as a control decreased the these values. Relationship of degradation behaviors with chemical structure and morphology were discussed.

Notes: In the chain oxidation of N-alkylamides with molecular oxygen, propagation is the ratedetermining step under conditions when the oxidation rate is independent of oxygen pressure. The oxidizability of lactams and lactam-based polyamides correlates with the energy of the formation of N-alkylamide radical by abstraction of hydrogen from the methylene group adjacent to nitrogen. While for lactams this energy depends on the number of carbons in the lactam ring, for N-alkylamides and polylactams such dependence is not observed.

Notes: An X-band EPR-Imaging apparatus which allowed us to determine the distribution of nitroxyl radicals within solid samples of polymeric materials containing hindered amine stabilizers, is described. It is shown that EPR Imaging represents a powerful tool for investigating the growth and decay of nitroxyls formed in polymers irradiated under air for long periods. Since the variations of the radical concentration can be monitored both in time and in the space, this technique provides valuable information not easily attainable by means of other methods.

Notes: A re-examination of the photo-oxidation mechanism of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) at both long and short irradiation wavelengths under accelerated conditions is reported. The formation rate of poly-2,6-dimethylphenoxy (PDMP) radicals, have been observed by esr spectroscopy, while benzylic-type radicals have been detected by spin trapping experiments using nitrosodurene under UV irradiation conditions. The changes of FTIR spectra obtained under accelerated photo-oxidative conditions show the formation of primary oxidation products such as aromatic aldehydes and quinones. The direct formation of radical cations and superoxide anions by a photo-induced electron-transfer reaction is suggested under our conditions. In addition, some results on the of photo-oxidation PPO/PS blends as a function of polystyrene tacticity are also reported. In the case of syndiotactic polystyrene the blend photostability shows some differences in comparison with the blend containing atactic polystyrene. This effect has been ascribed to the absence of excimers in syndiotactic polystyrene which are not revealed by fluorescence measurements. Finally, the chemical modification of PPO with bromine gave a bromomethylated PPO with different amounts of CH2 Br groups, which has been used for further substitution reactions with alkoxy sodium salts of 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) and 4-hydroxy-1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidine (PMPP). The accelerated photo-oxidation of a modified copolymer PPO-PMPP containing a 60% PMPP moieties as side groups and its blends with pure PPO has been followed by FTIR and esr spectroscopies. Some comparisons with a commercially available hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) and a modified copolymer PPO-PMPP are also reported under the same photo-oxidative conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: For innovative applications of plastics, which take advantage of special properties of polymeric materials, comprehensive understanding on strengthening and toughening mechanisms is required. The temperature-dependent mechanical behaviour of PMMA, PS and PC under dynamic loading conditions were investigated by means of an instrumented Charpy impact tester. The elastic-plastic fracture mechanics parameters, the energy-determined J-integral, and the deformation-determined crack opening displacement, δ, enable to do structure-related quantification of micromechanical processes. The J-integral values showed a maximum, resulting from an energy-dissipative process. The maximum values for PMMA occurred at 50°C and for PC at 40°C , which is related to the secondary(β) relaxation as evaluated from the frequency dependence of the mechanical loss factor. The 0-relaxation initiated shear deformation mechanisms, which led to a local increase of toughness. In polycarbonate, toughness is strongly increased due to a stress-induced shear flow process at temperatures higher than -25°C. Correlations between morphology and toughness can be derived with the help of optical investigations of stable crack propagation on fracture surfaces.

Description / Table of Contents: Eine Reihe von Polyamidimid-Polyimid-Blockcopolymeren (PAI-PI-BCPs) wurde durch Polykondensation von PAI-Blöcken mit Amino-Endgruppen und PI-Blöcken mit Anhydrid-Endgruppen hergestellt.
Notes: New poly(amide-imide)-poly(imide) block copolymers (PAI-PI-BCPs) were prepared by polycondensation of amino-terminated PAI-blocks with anhydride-terminated PI-blocks. For the syntheses of the blocks with molecular weights from 2000 to 15000 only commercially available monomers were used, e.g. trimellitic acid anhydride chloride, benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane, 2,4-toluenediamine and 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone. The BCPs were shown to have better solubility compared to the pure, insoluble PIs with only minor decrease of the thermostability. Thus, BCPs with good mechanical properties, thermostabilities up to 480°C (thermogravimetric analysis, 5% weight loss) and good solubility in dimethylacetamide and other polar aprotic solvents were obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: Der Zustand von Wasser in Protonenaustausch-Membranen, hergestellt durch Pfropfen von Styrol auf Polyvinylidenfluorid-Filme (PVDF-g-PS) mittels Elektronenstrahlen und anschließendes Sulfonieren (PVDF-g-PSSA), wurde mittels Differentialkalorimetrie (DSC), Raman-Spektroskopie und Rontgen-Diffraktion (SAXS) ermittelt.
Notes: The state of water in proton exchange membranes prepared by pre-irradiation (electron beam, 100 kGy) grafting of styrene onto poly(vinylidene fluoride) films (PVDF-g-PS), followed by sulfonation (PVDF-g-PSSA), has been studied with thermal analysis, Raman spectroscopy and small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS). Raman spectra show that, in addition to free liquid water in the membranes, single water molecules are weakly bound to the polymer backbone. Thermal analysis shows that there are three types of water molecules in the membrane; non-freezable water associated with the ionic sites, freezable free water, and freezable bound water. The amount of non-freezable water is around 10 H2O/SO3H (mol/mol), and is independent of the degree of grafting (d.o.g.). The amount of freezable water is strongly dependent on the d.o.g. as long as the grafting has not penetrated the whole of the film, and reaches a value of around 40 H2O/SO3H (mol/mol) above a d.o.g. of 50%. The conductivity of membranes containing only the non-freezable water is low, i. e. the ionically bound water alone does not form the domains necessary for proton and water transport. SAXS measurements show that water/sulfonic acid clusters in hydrated PVDF-g-PSSA membranes with a Bragg distance of 25 Å are formed; these form the ion conducting channels in the membrane.

Notes: The tensile and flexural moduli of the compression-molded sheets of polypropene with different surface layer crystallinity were investigated based on a layered composite model. It was found that the tensile stress-strain curve and flexural deflection depended largely on the surface layer crystallinity, but the ultimate strain-at-break values were independent of the surface layer crystallinity. It is suggested that the tensile and flexural behavior can be characterized using a layered composite model in which a bulk plate was sandwiched between two surface layers.

Notes: Addition of HALS-stabilisers, the cut-off wavelength of the light source, the temperature and the oxygen pressure have an influence on the UV-degradation mechanism of polyolefins. All these parameters influences the conversion of oxygen into polymeric carbonyls. The results are explained assuming that the initiation of the UV-degradation of pololefins is due to substrate-oxygen charge transfer complexes (CTCs).

Notes: The applicability of fracture mechanics was studied on UV-exposed HDPE Charpy specimens. The failure distribution of the stress at failure measured in three-points bending tests showed a bifurcation in failure processes. At high stresses yielding occurs, resulting in large strain at failures. At lower stresses crack propagation causes low strain at failures. Due to the bifurcation in failure processes the ductile-brittle transition temperature of exposed specimens is hard to determine.Specimens notched after exposure showed a decrease in the critical stress intensity values. The effective notch depth of exposed specimens was found to be larger than the thickness of the oxidized layer measured by FT-IR and density measurements.

Notes: In the 2-hydroxyphenyl-1,3,5-triazines, the intramolecular hydrogen bond is stronger than in the corresponding 2-hydroxyphenylbenzotriazoles. Compounds with only one aryl group in the 2-hydroxyphenyl-1,3,5-triazine series show proton-transferred fluorescence with large Stokes shift and high quantum yield. No such fluorescence is observed, in contrast, for compunds with three aryi groups bearing no electrondonating groups on the aryl moieties. When the hydrogen atom of the intramolecular hydrogen bond is replaced by CH3, the respective derivative shows fluorescence with a normal Stokes shift.Various copolymers of MA-TIN 1 (2-[2-hydroxy-3-tert.-butyl-5-(O-[2-hydroxy-3-(2-methylpropenoyloxy)propyl]-2-carbonyloxyethyl)phenyl]benzotriazole), and MA-TZ 1 (2,4-Bis(2,4-dimethyl-phenyl)-6-[2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxy-3-[2-methylpropenoyloxy])propoxyphenyl]-1,3,5-triazine) with styrene, methyl methacrylate, and methacrylic acid have been synthesized by radical polymerization. The absorption spectra in the longwavelength UV region appear unchanged compared to those of the monomeric UV absorbers indicating that the stabilizer chromophores are conserved intact in the polymer. Both the monomeric and the polymeric stabilizers exhibit a strongly Stokesshifted, temperature-dependent, low-quantum-yield, proton-transferred fluorescence. This may be taken as evidence that the intramolecular hydrogen bond, which is essential for the photostability of this type of UV absorber, remains intact also in the copolymers. Activation energies of the radiationless deactivation process can be evaluated from the temperature dependence of this fluorescence. These energies lie between 4 and 5 kJ/mol for most of the benzotriazole and triazine stabilizers investigated.Fluorescence-decay measurements with crystalline MA-TIN 1 at different temperatures reveal a close correspondence of the temperature dependence between decay times and relative quantum yields. The radiationless process is thence concluded to originate from the proton-transferred level S1'. The decay time at room temperature is estimated at 70 ps, close to the value for crystalline TIN P (2-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)benzotriazole). The proton-transferred fluorescence of MA-TIN 1 exhibits a biexponential decay profile whereas solid TIN P, in contrast, displays only one single lifetime.

Notes: A simplified scheme for treating the spatial configurations of polynucleotide chains is developed using the rotational isomeric state approximation and statistical methods applicable to linear systems of interacting subunits. As a consequence of geometric constraints imposed by the skeletal structure and of the severity of certain steric interactions, it is possible to represent the repeat unit comprising six skeletal bonds by two virtual bonds of fixed length. The configuration of the polynucleotide chain as a whole may be conveniently described by an alternating succession of these two virtual bonds. Moreover, analysis of steric interactions suggests that bond rotations governing the mutual orientation of a given pair of successive virtual bonds should be sensibly independent of the rotations affecting the mutual orientation of other pairs. The statistical mechanical treatment of configuration-dependent properties is much simplified in consequence of this mutual independence. Mean-square dimensions calculated by giving equal weights to all sterically allowed conformations are much smaller than values determined by Felsenfeld and co-workers. The calculated dimensions are markedly increased, however, by placing certain arbitrary restrictions on the rotations about selected pairs of skeletal bonds. It is thus demonstrated that steric interactions alone are insufficient to account for the spatial characteristics of polynucleotide chains. The dimensions are also found to be sensitive to the conformation of the ribose ring of each nucleotide unit, but, insofar as the influences of steric interactions are concerned, the dimensions do not depend on the heterocyclic base attached to the ribose ring.

Notes: A theory is presented concerning the possible arrangements of protomers in tetrameric molecules. Isoenzymes may exist even in the case of homotetramers if the asymmetry of the identical protomers is detectable. The number of tetrahedral isoenzymes that can be isolated depends on the nature of the intersubunit bonds and on the level of the asymmetry of the protomers. Five isoenzymes can be distinguished only if two different types of protomers form tetrahedral tetramers and the asymmetry of protomers is not detectable with the method used. If the two types of protomers can bind each other by any pairs of binding sets and the asymmetry of both protomer types reaches the level of detection with the method used, we obtain 117 isoenzymes: 15 individual ones, and 51 stereoisomeric pairs.

Notes: Our previous paper described graphical procedures for evaluating the mode of association in ideal discrete and indefinite cases. This paper concerns the application of such procedures in cases where the non-ideality term BM1 must be considered. Bovine liver L-glutamate dehydrogenase and lysozyme are used as model systems. Several graphical procedures for dealing with cases of 1 - m, 1 - m - n, or indefinite association are developed. The procedure is based on the evaluation of the weight-fraction monomer with-out prior calculation of BM1, using graphical analysis to evaluate the non-ideality term.

Notes: The preparation of L-lysine peptides (Lysn, n = 2-14) from polyL-lysine is described. Fractionation by ion-exchange column chromatography of poly-L-lysine hydrolysates on a preparative scale resulted in 0.2-1.0 g quantities of individual members of the poly-L-lysine series. The peptides isolated proved to be analytically pure and the optical configuration was fully retained, as demonstrated by complete enzymic digestion. Peptides higher than n = 14 were also prepared. They consisted of oligolysine groups of narrow and accurately determined size distribution. Potentiometric titrations were used both to characterize the products and to demonstrate the characteristic dependence of the dissociation constants on size of the peptide.

Notes: The rate of double helix formation by single stranded Poly A plus Poly U, Poly I plus Poly C, Poly G plus Poly C, and T2 DNA has been investigated as a function of both the length of the reacting strands and temperature. The length dependence of the rate is found to be independent of temperature. All of the reactions studied show a rate approximately proportional to the square root of the length of the shorter of the complementary strands. At or about 30°C below the melting temperature the ribopolymers react with about the same rate. This rate is four to five times slower than DNA renaturation rates. The effect of temperature on ribopolymer reaction rates is interpreted in terms of a steady-state model for helix propagation.

Notes: NMR spectra of cyclo(tri-L-prolyl), c-(P)3, show large shifts of the Hα resonance on adding C6D6 to a solution of c-(P)3 in CD2Cl2. CPK models and observed coupling constants indicate a rigid c-(P)3 conformation, independent of solvent composition, suggesting that these shifts result from formation of stereospecific C6D6-c-(P)3 collision complexes in which the c-(P)3 Hα lie near the face of the aromatic ring. The temperature dependence of the Hα shifts and the solvent dependent shifts observed on adding toluene-d8 or nitrobenzene-d5 to the c-(P)3 solution suggest that preferred C6D6-c-(P)3 orientations result from attractive interactions between the electron-rich aromatic ring and the electropositive Hα's and/or δ+ nitrogen atoms in the peptide backbone. Reports of such interactions in increasingly diverse peptide model systems suggest that they may play a role in stabilizing protein structures.

Notes: Thermal denaturation of native or partially dehistonized nucleohistones shows two melting bands at 66 and 81° in 2.5 × 10-4 M EDTA, pH 8.0. These correspond to the melting of DNA segments bound by the less basic and the more basic half-molecules of histones, respectively. These two melting bands combine into a broad melting band from around 70 to 85° when these nucleohistones are pre-treated with formaldehyde. A formaldehyde reaction which fixes histones on DNA by covalent bonds account for the effect. Formaldehyde fixation also increases the melting temperature of some free DNA segments from around 42 to around 55°. This is interpreted as a result of closed or rigid boundaries between free DNA and formaldehyde-reacted histone-bound DNA segments. MgCl2 dissociates histones from DNA more effectively and leaves longer free DNA segments than does NaCl. Thermal denaturation of a formaldehyde-reacted nucleoprotein thus provides an effective tool for comparing the relative size of free DNA regions on nucleoproteins. The effect of reversible binding of ligands on helix-coil transition of DNA is descussed and found not adequate for thermal denaturation of nucleohistones.

Notes: The isometric tensile stress generation observed when collagen fibers are immersed in aqueous solutions of lithium bromide ranging in molar concentration up to 7 was studied at 23°C. The reverse process, namely, isometric stress relaxation of the fiber occurring by subsequent immersion in distilled water, was also studied. We find that the data in the region of LiBr concentration up to about 2.5 moles/liter are adequately represented by a superposition integral \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \sigma (t) = \int_{ - \infty }^\infty {K(t - \tau )} \frac{{dc(\tau )}}{{d\tau }}\,d\tau $$\end{document} where σ(t) is the time-dependent stress generated by the collagen fiber held at fixed length, c(t) is the history of LiBr molar concentration, and K(t) is the isometric contractility function, expressed as stress per unit salt concentration. We conclude that, within a limited range of salt concentration, a collagen fiber in a LiBr bath behaves as if it were a linear, time-invariant system defined mechanochemically by a single function K(t) which depends on the structural characteristics of the fiber while being independent of salt concentration. An analysis is presented of isometric mechanochemical data obtained under conditions of equilibrium by other workers who studied the behavior of collagen fibers in aqueous solutions either of urea, LiBr, or KCNS. The analysis shows that these independent (equilibrium) data confirm the linarity of the relation between isometric contractile stress and salt concentration on which our superposition integral representation is based. We also find that the asymptotic (infinite-time) value of the isometric stress is linearly related to the chemical potential of the salt as well, in agreement with the equilibrium thermodynamic treatment of mechanochemical processes by Katchalsky and Oplatka.

Notes: A general theory of polyelectrolyte solutions is here used to calculate the differences in Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy between the coil and helix forms of DNA at any temperature and salt concentration. The salt has univalent cations and is assumed present in excess over the base concentration. The results are restricted to sufficiently dilute solutions. It is shown that the salt concentrations effect is entirely entropic in origin. When applied to the melting temperature, the calculations yield a relation between the enthalpy difference at the melting temperature and the slope of the plot of melting temperature vs. the logarithm of the salt concentration. In accord with observation, both the Gibbs free energy difference at any fixed temperature and the melting temperature are predicted to be linear functions of the log of the salt concentration. However, the theory is not in quantitative agreement with enthalpy data. Data on various colligative and transport properties of both helix and coil forms are reviewed in the text and in Appendix B, and good agreement is found with theory for both forms. No attempt is made to explain why the theory is quantitative for these properties but not for heat measurements. Finally, in Appendix A, an approximate calculation is made of the free energy contributions due to ionic effects not associated with the salt concentration.

Notes: High-molecular-weight poly-L-alanine dissolved in hexafluoroisopropanol exhibits infrared, ultraviolet, circular dichroism, and optical rotatory dispersion spectra which are unique and unlike any other previously reported polypeptide spectra. Strong evidence that a helical conformation is present is shown by the high degree of hypochromism in the 187mμ absorption peak and by the positions of the amide infrared bands. The CD and ORD spectra are also similar to those of α-helical polypeptides, though important qualitative and qualitative differences are observed. To explain the novel spectra, which are not mixtures of the spectra of previously reported polypeptide conformations, a new α-helix-like conformation is proposed. The postulated conformation (a doubly hydrogen-bonded helix) is a distorted α-helix in which the peptide carbonyl groups point slightly out from the helix axis and are hydrogen bonded simul taneously both to the NH of the fourth peptide residue to the carboxyl terminal side (as in the classical α-helix), as well as to a solvent molecule's hydroxyl hydrogen.

Notes: Circular dichriosm (CD) spectra have been calculated for serveral dinucleoside phosphates using a variant of the Pariser-Parr-Pople π-electron molecular orbital method. This method does not require the prior knowledge of the experimental absorption spectra of transition moments of the bases forming the dinucleoside phosphates. Calculated spectra were obtained in good agreement with experimental spectra for four dinucleoside phosphates, ApA, UpU, GpA, and UpA, and reasonable agreement was obtained for ApG and ApU. The effect of changing conformation on the CD spectrum was studied for ApA, UpU, UpA, and ApU; the spectra of UpU, UpA, and ApU were sensitive to small change in conformation, whereas ApA was insensitive over the range of conformation studied. Further studies await detailed knowledge of the structure of dinucleoside phosphates in solution.

Notes: The solvent-and pH-induced conformational changes are examined in order to investigate the influence of benzyl group. Polymer was prepared via N∊-benzyloxycarbonyl, N∊-benzyl-Nα-carboxy-L-lysine anhydride. The resulting poly (N∊-benzyloxycarbonyl, N∊-benzyl-L-lysine) was obtained in high yield and had a high molecular weight. The protected polymer was removed into poly (N∊-benzyl-L-lysine) by treating it with hydrogen bromide. From the results of the ORD and CD, the protected polymer has a righthanded α-helix, showing [m′]233 = -10,300, [θ]220 = -27,600 and [θ]207 = -25,100 in dioxane. The breakdown of the helical conformation is found to occur at 8% dichloroacetic acid in chloroform-dichloroacetic acid mixture. In the pH range 3.35-6.90, poly (N∊-benzyl-L-lysine) is in a random coil structure. In the pH range 7.50-13.0, the polypeptide has a right-handed α-helix structure; [m′]233 = -12,000, [0]220 = -27,200, and [0]207 = -27,000. In comparison with poly-L-lysine, the coil-to-helix transition is observed at lower pH range in 50% n-propanol. Above pH 8 by heating, the α ⇀ β transition of poly (N∊-benzyl-L-lysine) is not observed in an aqueous media.

Notes: A simple sequential model is developed which is applicable to the kinetics of melting of some types of oligomeric helices and as an idealization to the kinetics of unfolding of some protein molecules. A procedure is presented for calculating the concentrations of all conformational species as functions of time. The time course of experimentally observable quantities which depend on these concentrations may then be computed. One of the most characteristic features of the model is the distinction between a transient and a steady-state phase. During the latter all molecular parameters change at the same rate, which depends strongly on the difficulty of nucleation and the length of the sequence. Simple approximations to the steady-state rate are discussed in terms of the exact solution. Rates of transient processes dependless strongly on the rate of nucleation and the number of steps and are a more direct reflection of the rates of the rates of the elementary process of propagation. The value of experimental observation of transient process is emphasized.

Notes: Far-infrared spectra were measured for the sequential copolymers of amino acids with alkyl group side chains. The analysis of the spectra showed that (L-Ala-L-Ala-Gly)n, (L-Ala-Gly)n, (L-Ala-Gly-Gly)n, (L-Val-L-Ala-L-Ala)n, and (L-Val-L-Ala)n, have the antiparallel pleated sheet structures and that the backbone conformations of (L-Val-L-Val-L-Ala)n and (L-Val-L-Val-Gly)n are the same as that of poly-L-valine. The far-infrared bands characteristic of the antiparallel pleated sheet structure were assigned on the basis of the result of the normal coordinate analysis of poly-L-alanine with this structure. The intersheet and interchain spacings of the sequential copolymers with the antiparallel pleated sheet structure were determined from the x-ray powder-diffraction patterns of these samples.

Notes: Circular dichroism spectra of acridine orange bound to E. coli tRNA were studied at varying tRNA phosphate-to-dye (P/D) ratios for both unfractionated and purified materials in the absence of Mg++. From the rather discrete features exhibited in the circular dichroism spectra three types of interactions were observed: (1) A high P/D ratio such as 75.2 or 49.8 indicates the interaction between the nucleotide base and dye molecule. The spectra with a large positive peak at 515 mμ are, however, quite different from that of DNA-AO complex under similar conditions. (2) With an intermediate P/D ratio (26.5 to 9.6) dye molecules bound strongly to the polynucleotide chain. (3) With low P/D ratios (≤7.5) the interaction appears to be due to the stacked dye molecules in the single-stranded part of tRNA. The spectra of the third group have an isobestic point at 477 mμ. Below a P/D ratio of 4 the spectrum shows one positive and two negative bands which may be the characteristics of circular dichroism of stacked dyes in polynucleotide chain.Although no drastic change in the conformation of tRNA itself was detectable in the presence of Mg++ in the ultraviolet region, a dramatic change was observed in the circular dichroism of tRNA-acridine orange complex when Mg++ concentration was increased to 10-3M. It was inferred that certain conformational changes other than simple hydrogen bond formation occured in tRNA molecules at this high Mg++ concentration, so that the amount of bound dye in the stacking condition was increased through the transition.

Notes: Apparent second-order rate constants for complex formation between poly (I) and poly (C) and copolymers of C containing non-complementary I or U residues have been determined spectrophotometrically. The rate constants decrease as the concentration of either I or U in the C strands increases-the effect seems insensitive to the species of residue involved, when differences in the thermal stabilities of the poly (I) poly (C,I) and poly (I). poly (C,U) complexes are taken into account. These results suggest that low concentrations of relatively stable defects can alter the apparent kinetic “complexity” of polynucleotides as determined by hybridization methods (C0t analysis).

Notes: DNA which has been heat denatured in the presence of Cu++ ions can be completely and rapidly renatured by increasing the ionic strength of the solution above a critical value. A kinetic study of this renaturation recation was carried out by following the associated UV absorbance change and also by following the change in free Cu++ ion concentration by means of a specific Cu++ ion activity electrode. The data obtained could be fitted to first-order kinetics for a considerable extent of the reaction and the rate constant was found to increase with temperature and ionic strength, but to decrease markedly as the bulk viscosity of the solution was increased. At temperatures greater than 5°C the reaction rate depended on the time elapsing between denaturation and the commencement of the renaturation reaction. As there was good agreement between the rate constants obtained by following the decrease in hyperchromism and by following the increase in free Cu++ ion concentration, it is concluded that under the conditions employed, the rate of renaturation is determined by the rate of release of Cu++ ions from the denatured DNA-Cu++ complex.

Notes: Conformational aspects of a series of copolymers of L-Leucine and L-leucine [poly-(LysxLeuy)] containing 0 to 0.41 mole fraction L-leucine have been studied by circular dichroism (CD) and potentiometric titration in 0.05M KF solution. CD studies on the α-helical conformation showed a dependence of the magnitude of the CD ellipticity band at 222 nm on copolymer composition; the [θ]222 decreasing with higher leucine contents. This was interpreted as the result of an increase of the hydrophobicity of the environment of the amide group due to the presence of the leucyl residues. Values of the Zimm-Rice parameter, σ, for the copolymers were obtained from the potentiometric titrations and used to fit theoretical curves to the experimental data. Using the variation of σ with polymer composition, a value of σ for the leucyl residue was estimated to be 6.3 × 10-2, assuming independence of σ on the amino acid sequence in the copolymer. The free energy change for the conversion of one mole residue from uncharged helix to uncharged coil, ΔGhc°, was also obtained from the titration data for each copolymer up to a leucine mole fraction of 0.16; a value of 385 cal mole-1 was estimated for ΔGhc° for a leucyl residue. These values for σ and ΔGhc° are compared with other values in the literature for various amino acid residues obtained from titration and melting curve data.

Notes: Optical rotatory dispersion measurements were used to follow the transition from the helical to the random coil conformation of poly-β-benzyl-L-aspartate as induced by changes in temperature and solvent composition in mixtures of dioxane and dimethylsulfoxide. Within experimental error, there is no difference in the stability of the helical state as measured in this way for the protonated and deuterated forms of the polypeptide. This result is considered in terms of previous attempts to study the isotope effect on conformational transitions of helical biological macromolecules and polypeptides. The conclusion is drawn that the apparent changes in conformational stability observed in these previous systems arise from alteration of the properties of the solvent. Speculations are advanced regarding the contribution of the interpeptide bond to the stability of the helical state.

Notes: The helical structures of poly[(S)-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid], in the cis and trans forms, were redetermined by using the new sets of bond angles and bond lengths established by X-ray diffraction analysis of L-thioproline. Calculations of the helical structures of poly-L-proline and poly[(S)-oxazolidine-4-carboxylic acid] were also repeated. As a result of these energy calculations, it is suggested that, in contrast to poly-L-proline and poly[(S)-oxazolidine-4-carboxylic acid], poly[(S)-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid] should not mutarotate from the trans to the cis form. This result is due to the fact that the energy barrier for the conversion is most likely too high. Previous experimental work is consistent with this finding.

Notes: Measurements of optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) and circular dichroism (CD) were made in the range of 400-205 nm for polysaccharide tribenzoates such as 2,3,6-tri-O-benzoyl amylose (I), 2,3,4-tri-O-benzoyl dextran (II), tri-O-benzoyl pullulan (III), 2,3,6-tri-O-benzoyl cellulose (IV), 2,3,6-tri-O-benzoyl mannan (V), and polyglycan dibenzoates such as 2,3,-di-O-benzoyl amylose (VI), cellulose (VII), and mannan (VIII). All compounds exhibit Cotton effects in the region of their UV absorption bands (206-285 nm).Comparison of the corresponding di- and tribenzoyl polysaccharides shows a qualitative agreement in number, position and sign of the CD bands but differences in ellipticity magnitude. The disubstituted derivatives exhibit smaller amplitudes than the trisubstituted ones. The contribution of the C(6) chromophore (linked by a CH2-group to the asymmetric C(5) atom) was determined to be of the same sign as the combined contribution of the C(2) and C(3) substituents. The CD bonds of the individual polysaccharide derivatives, which differ in number, sign, and position, were discussed in terms of the steric position of the single chromophores and the steric arrangement and interaction caused by the configuration of the polysaccharides. The optical behavior of these polysaccharide derivatives was found to be not strongly influenced by a definite chain conformation in solution.

Notes: The influence of the substituents upon the Amide I and νNH frequencies has been analyzed for ten amides substituted by aliphatic side chains. By considering the aliphatic chain field effect, some data are obtained as to the conformation of the N—Cα bond. In two amides, the presence of an equilibrium between two conformers is shown and a semiquantitative estimation of the energies involved is obtained. The consequences for polypeptides conformation, especially for poly-L-valine, are discussed.

Notes: The effect of dielectric constant (D) of the solvent on the viscosity of heparin was examined using the relation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \eta _{{\rm sp}} /c = [\eta ]_\infty (1 + k/\sqrt c) $\end{document}, where [η]∞ is the shielded intrinsic viscosity obtained by extrapolating \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \eta _{{\rm sp}} /c\,{\rm vs}{\rm . }\,1/\sqrt c ) $\end{document} to infinite concentration, and k is an interaction parameter independent of the dielectric constant of the solvent. This equation was previously reported by the authors9 for describing the reduced viscosities of strong polyelectrolytes in salt-free polar solvents. It was found that the [η]∞ of heparin increases linearly with increasing dielectric constant of the solvent whereas the k values were, within experimental error, independent of D in the range 54.7 〈 D 〈 93.2 examined. Graded hydrolysis of heparin from its acid form (heparinic acid) at 57°C resulted in samples of varying degree of desulfation with corresponding decrease in biological activity. It was found that both [η]∞ and k decrease with increasing desulfation.

Notes: The high-humidity X-ray pattern of oriented fibers prepared from salmon spermheads strongly resembles that of DNA in the B form. However, the nucleoprotamine pattern has a more intense first layer line and increased lateral unit-cell dimensions.Complexes of DNA with poly-L-lysine and poly-L-arginine were prepared and photographed at various relative humidities. The most crystalline patterns were obtained at 92% and also indicate DNA in the B form. However, whereas polylysine-DNA, like the spermheads, has a primitive hexagonal cell, polyarginine-DNA, like NaDNA, has three molecules in the unit cell. Polylysine-DNA, but not polyarginine-DNA, also resembles spermheads in having a strong first layer line. All three complexes show increasing intermolecular distance with increasing humidity, but with sharp maxima when photographed in water, which indicates cross-linking between the molecules. Lowering the humidity causes the polylysine-DNA, but not polyarginine-DNA, to change conformation from the B to the C form. The structural implications of these results are discussed in the light of model-building studies and a comparison of calculated and observed X-ray intensities.

Notes: The pH, temperature, and reagent concentration dependences of the cyanuration of tyrosines within proteins are compared with those of the free amino acid. The results indicate that the mechanism of the cyanuration reaction is a nucleophilic aromatic substitution of the SN2 type, where the tyrosine oxygen acts as a nucleophile and the displacement takes places at a carbon atom which is part of the six-membered ring of the s-triazene. This reaction must compete with the hydrolysis of cyanuric fluoride in aqueous media. These competing reactions generate curves for the pH dependence of the reactivity of tyrosine with cyanuric fluoride whihc vary in a predictable manner with the extent of ionization of tyrosine and the concentration of cyanuric fluoride. In the case of proteins, the dependence of the degree of tyrosine reactivity on pH and temperature within the pH range of full reactivity of the free amino acid reflects constraints imposed by the microenvironment of these groups within the three-dimensional structure of the macromolecule.

Notes: Serum albumin undergoes a conformational change at pH 4, known as the N-F transition. In the customary Linderstrøm-Lang treatment of hydrogen ion titration, the carboxyl groups in serum albumin either have an abnormally low pK, or are buried in charged form, and the Linderstrøm-Lang charging parameter ω decreases dramatically at the N-F isomerization. In the present paper partition functions are derived and distribution functions are calculated for a model permitting salt bonding between the positively and negatively charged sites on a macromolecule. The N-form has an abnormally high salt bonding constant whereas that of the F-form corresponds to that of small ions. The result obtained is consistent with a “normal” intrinsic pK of the carboxyl groups of serum albumin without burying of any charges and with an unchanged ω. The nature of the postulated salt bonding is discussed.Further, it is shown that the “abnormal salt bonding” of serum albumin can explain its unusual ability to bind anions. Theoretical binding curves are calculated and compared with literature data of the Cl- binding of serum albumin. The relation of the present model to other models of hydrogen ion and anion binding to proteins is discussed. Some additional consequences of the present model are pointed out; a transition in the alkaline range, analogous to the acid transition, seems probable. Literature data support the existence of such a transition but do not allow detailed calculations at present.A general, thermodynamic treatment of the interactions between small ligands and macromolecules is outlined. Important points are the choice of the statistical-me- chanical ensemble and considerations of the fluctuations about the mean bonding, if (i) there are not only a ligand-locus interaction but also interligand interactions (in par- ticular intdigand attraction), or (ii) there is a conformational change in themacromole- cule depending on the ligand binding. In these cases, the binding isotherms obtained from thermodynamically closed systems (canonical ensemble) may erroneously indicate a distribution about a single probability maximum, i.e., the statistical mean binding N̄, and fluctuations about this value. The description of a phase change in a bound phase or a change in the “internal” self-interactions of a macromolecule requires a bind- ing equation permitting distributions about two maxima, i.e., (i) N1* 〈 N̄ (“thin” phase) and N2* 〉 N̄ (“condensed” phase) or (ii) two macromolecular conformations P′, and P″, having occupancy numbers N̄, and N̄2, respectively. The N-F transition is an example illustrating the relation between the complete distribution functions and the two-state approximation.

Notes: Despite its being weaker base poly(2-vinylpyridine) polymerized DL-β-phenylalanine NCA at a much faster rate than pyridine and α-picoline. Poly(2-vinylpyridine) adsorbs NCA by hydrogen bonding with the cooperation of a few pyridine groups. This results in a high local concentration of NCA. The syndiotactic configuration of pyridine group seemed to be least suitable for the cooperative hydrogen bonding. Adsorbed NCA is activated to form an “activated” NCA which in turn reacts with an NCA adsorbed on the same polymer chain. Since the polymer chain is flexible, this intramolecular reaction takes place frequently, resulting in the acceleration of polymerization. The intramolecular reaction along the polymer chain is dependent on the degree of polymerization of polymer catalyst. A suitable model was proposed for the intramolecular reaction to explain the effect of degree of polymerization.

Notes: 5-Bromouracil-substituted DNA was isolated form B. Subtilis and phage PBSH. The three DNA fractions of Different densities (TT, TB, and BB) were irradiated with u.v. (313nm). The number of single-strand and double-strand breaks was determined. The breakage rates are given. It was found that in hybrid DNA (TB) double-strand breaks occur depending linearly on dose. In BB-DNA the observed double-Strand bresks can be divided into two fractions with a linear and quadratic dose dependence respectively. The results can be explained by assuming intramolecular energy transfer from the BU-containing strand to its complementary strand.

Notes: Differential enthalpic analysis of a series of 3′,5′-cyclic nucleotides indicates that homolytic cleavage of the six-membered phosphate ring occurs either immediately prior to or concurrent with decomposition of the crystal lattice. Homolysis is followed by a rapid polymerization to yield oligonucleotides. The enthalpies of these reactions have, with the exception of guanosine 3′,5′-cyclic phosphate, almost identical values of 25 kcal/mole. The anomalous case is attributed to a more stabilized phosphate ring as a result of hydrogen bonding through the two position of the purine ring. The pair of overlapping exothermic peaks observed in each of the thermograms for cAMP and cIMP is related to the presence of two conformational arrangements within the unit cell of each compound.

Notes: The total energy and the electronic properties of some syn purine nucleosides have been determined as a function of the rotation angle around the C-N glycosidic linkage. Invariably, the crystallographic coordinates provide a state lying at or very near the minimum on the potential energy curve according to the extended Hückel parametrization here employed. The ribose moiety always carries a net positive charge whereas the base is always negatively charged. Changes in dipole moment magnitudes for the overall structure as well as in net atomic charges are noted upon rotation around the glycosidic linkage indicating that potential functions for polynucleotides may be in error if such changes are ignored.

Notes: Syntheses are described for two N-benzyloxycarbonylpeptide tert-butoxycarbonylhydrazides which correspond to positions 24-34 and 35-44, respectively, of the primary structure of baker's yeast iso-1-cytochrome c. The two peptide derivatives were coupled via the azide procedure to form the N-benzyloxycarbonylheneicosapeptide tert-butoxycarbonylhydrazide (sequence 24-44).

Notes: The primary amine initiated homopolymerization of γ-benzyl-L-glutamate NCA in dioxane at 25°C, 35°C, 50°C, and 65°C has been investigated. The reactions were virtually independent of temperature indicating an activation energy of less than 1 kcal/mole. The entropy of activation was estimated to be -65 entropy units at 300°K. The reaction proceeded in two stages. The first stage was zero-order with respect to monomer, whereas the second was first-order with respect to monomer. Both stages were first-order with respect to initiator. These results were interpreted by assuming that the rate constant for propagation was not independent of the degree of polymerization up to the point where a conformational transition to α-helix occurred.

Notes: The kinetics of interaction between proflavine and poly I.poly C at 25°C, neutral pH, and moderate ionic strength have been studied by relaxation methods. The qualitative features of this system resemble those previously reported by Crothers and co-workers for proflavine-DNA and proflavine-poly A·poly U interactions-two relaxations are observed coresponding to a fast bimolecular step followed by a slower isomerization. These results can best be accommodated by a two-step mechanism leading from the free dye through an “outside-bound” complex to the intercalated complex. Quantitative comparison of the various rate constants for proflavine binding to different double-helical polynucleotides shows that the rates are slower for both ribohomopolymer pairs than for DNA. The rates for poly I·poly C are approximately three times faster than these for poly A·poly U.

Notes: Infrared and Raman spectra of aqueous poly(rA-rU)·poly(rA-rU), the double-helical complex containing strands of alternating riboadenylate and ribouridylate residues, display significant differences from one another and from corresponding spectra of poly(rA)·poly(rU), the double-helical complex of riboadenylate and ribouridylate homopolymers. Parallel studies on the copolymer and homopolymer complexes by cesium sulfate density gradient centrifugation, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, hydrogenion titration, 1-N oxidation of adenine residues by monoperphthalic acid and X-ray diffraction reveal, however, that the geometry of base pairing between adenine and uracil is closely similar in each complex and apparently of the Watson-Crick type. Therefore the differences observed between vibrational spectra of poly (rA-rU)·poly (rA-rU) and poly(rA)·poly(rU) are not due to different base-pairing schemes but may be attributed to differences in vibrational coupling between vertically stacked bases. Vibrational coupling may also account for the differences between infrared and Raman spectra of the same complex. Thus, the present results indicate that infrared and Raman frequencies of RNA in the region 1750-1550 cm-1 should be dependent on the base sequence.

Notes: A simple model is introduced to investigate the stability of a sedimenting entanglement. The sedimenting entanglement is represented by a sedimenting sieve. Solvent can pass through it, but single-chain molecules that flow into it become entangled and their flow decreases or, if permanent entanglements form, ceases entirely. With this model we are able to find the conditions under which the mass of a sedimenting entanglement remains constant, grows or decays to a stable value, grows beyond limit, or decays to the mass of a single chain. The theory is applied to the sedimentation of small concentrations of large chain molecules in solutions of small chain molecules in solutions of small chain molecules for the case in which the entanglements are long-lived. Equations are derived which, (1) give the stable entanglement mass as a function of rotor speed and concentration and, (2) for a given concentration predict the rotor speed at which the entanglement mass grows without limit. Numerical results for small concentrations of T2 DNA sedimenting in solutions of T7 DNA are presented.

Notes: The solution bebavior of poly-L-proline Form II has been studied in water and aqueous salt solutions by both elastic and quasi-elastic light -scattering techniques. The results of this study suggest that polyproline Form II can exist in water at 24 °C as an associated polymer complex and that certain salts which do not appear to affect the helix integrity, e.g., guanidinium-HCl, resutl in dissociation of the aggregate. Other neutral salts, of the variety effective in mediating unfolding of the Form II helix (e.g., 4M NaClO4) also induce aggregate dissociation, but 4M CaCl2 results in enhanced aggregation of polyproline. Kinetic experiments indicate that a time of 20 hours is necessary for the completion of the “large” to “small” transformation (at 22°C) which is induced by the addition of 4M NaClO4. Thus it appears that neutral salts additives in aqueous solutions of polyproline influence both the state of aggregation and the conformation of this polymer.

Notes: The dielectric relaxation of namtive DNA and DNA-proflavine complexes at different DNA phosphate (P) to dye (D) ratios, were investigated in the frequency range 100 c/sec to 100 Kc/sec. The proflavine molecules were found to have a profound effect on the static dielectric constant and the relaxation time of the polymers. The static dielectric constant was oberserved to decrese with increasing level of added proflavine. At P/D = 1, the variation of dielectric constant with frequency was small. Relaxation time (τ) was greater for the DNA-proflavine complexes compared to that for free DNA, Maximum value of the relaxation time was obtained at P/D = 10. The increase in the relaxation time and decrease in the static dielectric constant were attributed to the increase in length and meutralization of surface charges of the DNA molecules, respectively, as aresult of proflavine binding.

Notes: Fluorescence depolarization experiments performed on labaled poly-L-proline Forme II suggest the occurrence of aggrgation in water while 6M guanidinium-HCl induces dissociation. The solvent 4M CaCl2 results in a reduction of polymer structural orgganization. These findings corroborate suggestion of polyproline aggregation and solution behavior in aqueous neutral salt solytion (see preceding article).

Notes: A detailed study on the deuterium NMR of hydrated collagen in the presence of alkali and alkaline earth salt is reported. The effect of different salts in reducing the deuteron quadrupole splitting are similer at low molar content of salt. At higher salt contents, larger ions are more effective. The ressults are explained by the blocking of water binding sites to collagen by hydrated ions. When the temperature is reduced, only part of the adsorbed water iss frozen, and the amount of “unfreezable water” decreases with the increase in ionic sizes(LiCl 〈 MgCl2 〈 KCL 〈 KCNS). The freezing temperature is also lowered in the presence of salts. A description of the structure of hydrated collagen based upon the observed facts is given.

Notes: Poly-γ-L-glutamic acid has been synthesized by the activated pentachlorophenyl ester polymerization method and the molecule weight of the polymer was found to be 16,000. Comparative conformational studies on the synthetic and on the native polyglutamic acid mbtained from B. anthracis and B. subtilis were carried out using optical rotatory dispersion, circular dichroism, peptide absorption spectrum, and titration data. These results show that poly-γ-glutamic acid does not exhibit any conformational order under the conditions of investigation. At low degrees of ionization, restriction of conformational freedom via random “hypercoiling” of the chain appears likely.

Notes: Ultraviolet absorption, fluorescence excitation and emission, and fluorescence anisotropy demonstrate that the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbone 3,4-benzpyrene, Pyrene, anthracene, and 9-methylanthracene bind to histone IV after the sow conformational change in the presence of divalent phosphate anion. These hydrocarbons do not bind, within our limits of detection, to histone IV in the diosorderde form at low pH or to the form produced by the fast conformational change when the slow change is prevented. High anisotropy values for the bound hydrocarbon indicate a high degree of aggregation for the histone IV.

Notes: The aggregation of native acid-soluble collagen (N-ASC) and of pronase-treated acid soluble collagen (P-ASC) was examined in solution under conditions which varied from those of minimum collagen-collagen interaction to those leading to incipient fiber formation. Molecular weights and weight distributions were determined in the analytical ultracentrifuge using the Yphantis high speed sedimentation equilibrium and Aarchiblad approach-to-equilibrim techniques. The aggregation was pH and ionic strength dependent in each case. Under conditions of minimum aggregation (low pH, low ionic strength), N-ASC showed the presence of permant aggregates. At higher pH and ionic strength, a higher fraction of aggregate was formed but these were of the same charcter and molecular weight as the permanent aggregates. The aggregates were of a single molecular size, with a weight of 1.5 × 106 daltons, compared with a monomer collagen weight of 3.1 × 105 daltons. The P-ASC formed aggregates also but to a much lower extent and the maximum aggregate size corresponded to dimers in molecular weight. These data show the major importance of molecular end-regions in collagen aggregation to form native type fibers and, by virtue of the discrete size of the N-ASC aggregates, support the microfibrillar hypothesis for the assembly of collagen fibrills.
