Description / Table of Contents: Wahrnehmung, Nutzung und Management von Umwelt und Naturressourcen werden maßgeblich durch politische Herrschaftsformen beeinflusst – so die These der Politischen Ökologie.

Notes: Abstract We consider theq=3 Potts model in three dimensions by Monte Carlo simulations. The microcanonical density of states Ω is calculated as a function of the internal energy ε of the system. We extrapolate the data for the simulated finite systems to the thermo-dynamic limit and find a discontinuous phase transition. This method is checked in the two-dimensional case, where exact results are known.

Notes: Abstract The isolation of cDNAs is described which encode the complete sequence of a precursor protein for a HSP90 homologue consisting of an N-terminal transit peptide of 5850 Da and a mature protein (cpHSP82) of 82 260 Da, located in the plastids of rye leaves (Secale cereale). Hybridization analysis indicated the presence of a single gene in the DNA of rye and a transcript size of 2.8 kb. A phylogenetic tree constructured on the basis of sequence comparisons for HSP90 homologues from different species and compartments indicated that the plastidic HSP82 from rye was more closely related to an eubacterial protein than to HSP90 homologues of the cytosol or ER from both plants and animals. The results suggest that during chloroplast evolution the gene for cpHSP82 was transferred to the nucleus from a prokaryotic endosymbiont. Immunoblots with specific antibodies and Percoll gradient-purified organelles confirmed the location of cpHSP82 in chloroplasts or non-green plastids. In green rye leaves cpHSP82 was constitutively expressed and equally distributed among tissues of different age. The expression of cpHSP82 was enhanced within 2 h by exposure to 42 °C. The cpHSP82 transcript and protein were much more strongly expressed in non-green tissues, such as etiolated, 70S ribosome-deficient 32 °C-grown, or herbicide-bleached, than in normal green leaves. Also chromoplasts from the pericarp of tomato fruits contained high levels of a HSP90 polypeptide while a photosynthetic protein, the large subunit of the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase was largely degraded during ripening.

Notes: Abstract p0071 is a member of the armadillo gene family that is expressed in a wide variety of mammalian tissues and cell types with a prominent cell–cell contact association in epithelial cells. Here, we report the expression and localization patterns of p0071 in differentiating human skeletal muscle cells and in normal and diseased human skeletal muscle tissues. Northern blots revealed expression of p0071 mRNA in adult skeletal muscle tissue. RT-PCR analysis and Western blotting experiments identified two differentially spliced isoforms of p0071. The balance between these isoforms shifted during in vitro differentiation of isolated muscle cells from predominant expression of the short variant to a preponderance of the larger variant from day 6 onwards. Immunolocalization studies in mature skeletal muscle tissue revealed that p0071 is a constituent of myofibrils with a distinct localization at the level of sarcomeric N2-lines. During myofibrillogenesis, p0071 was not detected in non-striated nascent myofibrils, but became apparent shortly after the development of compact Z-discs in early myotubes. Furthermore, we studied the expression of p0071 in a wide variety of neuromuscular disorders by indirect immunofluorescence. Here, the myofibrillar staining of p0071 was preserved in all the disease entities included in our study. Our results provide the first evidence that a member of the armadillo multigene family is a constituent of the contractile apparatus in human skeletal muscle. The localization of p0071 at the level of I-bands and the timepoint of its integration into developing myofibrils suggest a possible role in the organization of thin filaments.

Notes: Nanofiltration Membranes for Separation Problems in Organic Solutions.Nanofiltration based on rejection and flux features intermediate between those ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis is one of the technically and scientifically interesting membrane processes with a great future. Moreover, most commercial available nanofiltration membranes are only suitable for separation processes in aqueous solutions. A small number of composite membranes with a highly cross-linked selective layer show a technically interesting resistance towards organic solvents, such as ketones, esters, ethers or alcohols. The present article describes such nanofiltration membranes used for separation of low molecular weight chemical compounds from polar or nonpolar solvents, but also for the removal of organic compound from aqueous solutions. Methods of manufacturing and modifying such solvent stable composite membranes are shown, as are the conditioning of membranes and examples of industrial application.

Description / Table of Contents: This paper reports on polymer membranes characterized by a surface layer of hydroxyalkyl derivatives of cellulose. Water compatible polymers like hydroxyalkyl derivatives of cellulose are preferably those exhibiting good chemical stability and desired membrane characteristics. Normally, water-compatible polymers used in the coating solutions must be rendered water-insoluble after coating. By adapting crosslinking conditions on separation problems, the membranes are useful for many processes in the fields of biotechnology, food and chemical industry. The membranes presented here possess the advantage of being highly resistant to chemical and biological degradation and, hence, have long lifetimes under many process conditions.
