Notes: A new method was studied for improving stainless steel antibacterial capability. TheNa2FeO4 coating was prepared on steel surface throughout NaOH treatment, then steel samples were immersed into the solution coantaining Ag+, Zn2+ and TiO2. The antibacterial-ions were fixated firmly on the stainless steel with chemical bond. Scanning electronic microscopy(SEM), X-ray(XRD) and atomic absoption spectroscopy(AAS) were employed to analyze the materials, and the results showed that the antibacterial membrane included silver citrate and silver peroxide. Quinn test was also carried out, in which Staphylococus and E.coli. the results showed that the steel has a bacteriostasis rate of 99.48% to Staphylococus, and 99.09% to E.coli

Notes: To compare with the human cortical bone, the biomimetic properties ofnano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66 composite (n-HA/PA66) were preliminarily studied qualitatively and quantitatively with TEM, XRD in crystal morphology, phase composition and crystal structure. A series of structure parameters such as cell lattice parameters (a and c), mean crystallite size and micro-strain were calculated to characterize quantitatively the microstructure of n-HA/PA66 andhuman cortical bone at the atomic level. The results show that n-HA/PA66 is a good biomimetic biomaterial. But there still are some differences between n-HA/PA66 and human cortical bone. Compared to human cortical bone, the crystal microstructure of n-HA/PA66 is denser, the crystal lattice of n-HA is more perfect and the distortion of crystal lattice decreases

Notes: A novel nano-hydroxyapatite/chitosan (n-HA/CS) composite scaffold with high porositywas developed by a new method of emulsion-foaming/freeze-drying process and was characterizedby means of infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and universalmaterial testing machine. In addition, the porosity and density of the scaffold were also calculated.IR result shows that the characteristic absorption peaks belonging to both CS and HA are present intheir composite, and the slight band-shifts and peak-decrease suggest that some interactions havetaken place between the two phases of CS and n-HA in the composite. SEM photo displays that, with the dosage increase of Tween-80, the prepared scaffold shows highly porous andinterconnected structure, in which macropores and micropores coexist. The calculated datademonstrate that the porosity of the scaffold is proportional to the content of the emulsifier, whilethe compressive strength is inversely. When 15wt% emulsifier used, the porosity of the scaffold canbe up to 90% and the density is 0.453g/cm3, while the corresponding compressive strength is about2.4MPa. The newly developed n-HA/CS composite scaffolds may serve as a good 3-D substrate forcell attachment and migration in bone tissue engineering

Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this article is to summarize the output and content of International Marketing Review (IMR) during its first 21 years. Design/methodology/approach - The output of IMR is first analysed to measure its stability and maturity. The focus is then shifted to the content of articles published in IMR, followed by a detailed analysis of authorship. Findings - In terms of output, IMR exhibits the characteristics of a stable and mature journal. Articles cover a wide range of topics within the international marketing domain. Authorship analysis reveals that the top contributors to IMR are also the top contributors to other high-ranking marketing journals. IMR has become a leading journal in the field. Practical implications - To maintain its competitive edge, IMR must continue to identify, define, and shape research developments in international marketing. Originality/value - A first analysis of the content of the first 21 years of IMR.

Notes: Purpose - Despite the rapid growth and internationalization of services, marketers of services realize that to successfully leverage service quality as a global competitive tool, they first need to correctly identify the antecedents of what the international consumer perceives as service "quality." This paper aims to examine the differences in perception of service quality dimensions between developed and developing economies. Design/methodology/approach - Parasuraman et al. proposed a framework consisting of ten determinants or dimensions of service quality: reliability, access, understanding of the customer, responsiveness, competence, courtesy, communication, credibility, security, and tangible considerations. The authors propose 14 hypotheses emphasizing differences in the perception of these dimensions between developed and developing economies by linking these with economic and socio-cultural factors. Extensive survey data are collected in the context of banking services from three countries: USA, India, and the Philippines and statistically tested using multivariate analysis of variance. Findings - Of the 14 hypotheses, 13 were supported (five partially) in that the results for the USA were systematically and significantly different from those for India and the Philippines in the predicted direction. Research limitations/implications - While almost all of the hypotheses are supported, future research should look at multiple service sectors and include alternative service quality models to further validate this study. Practical implications - Despite limitations, current results have significant implications for international marketing in service strategy formulation, service development, pricing, communications, and service delivery. Originality/value - International service managers need to understand the value of environmental differences between countries in terms of economic development and cultural value system and accordingly emphasize the various dimensions of service quality differentially.

Notes: Polyactide (PLA) and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) were prepared by bulk ring-opening polymerization of lactide or lactide/glycolide using stannous octoate as initiator. PLA and PLGA microspheres with an average diameter of 65-100 μm were prepared by a solvent evaporation process. An in vitro degradation test of different molecular weight PLA and of different composition PLGA were carried out in pH 7.4 buffer solution at 37°C in the form of microspheres. Quantitatively, the degree of degradation was monitored by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), by measurement of mass loss and determination of lactic/glycolic acid in degradation medium, and qualitatively, by observing the morphological changes of microspheres with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The decrease in weight average molecular weight (Mw) for PLA with higher molecular weight is faster at the first degradation stage; afterward, the tendency of Mw to decrease for PLA with different molecular weight is almost the same. PLGA degrades much faster than does PLA, and the degradation rate is significantly enhanced with the increase of glycolic acid (GA) content in copolymers.

Notes: Unilateral interruption of the chorda-lingual nerve led to a loss of most epithelial axons and to the deterioration of fungiform taste buds in the anterior portion of the tongue of albino rats, mongolian gerbils, and golden hamsters. By three weeks after surgery the following percentages of fungiform taste buds had completely disappeared: 71% in gerbils, 28% in rats, and 26% in hamsters. Residual taste buds were classified into two groups: atrophic taste buds and taste bud remnants. Atrophic taste buds were smaller than normal and typically had no visible taste pore, although they retained the characteristic oval shape of a taste bud and numerous elongated cells. Taste bud remnants were non-oval fragments of taste buds with few elongated cells. Specific markers for elongated taste cells (monoclonal antibodies to keratin 19) confirmed that atrophic taste buds, as well as some taste bud remnants, had elongated taste cells. By 180 days after chorda-lingual nerve transection, 44% of rat fungiform taste buds had disappeared; morphometric analysis of the 311 residual taste buds established that 241 atrophic taste buds and 69 taste bud remnants were, respectively, 50% and 75% smaller than the average volume of 480 normal taste buds. The aggregate loss of gustatory tissue, calculated from the shrinkage of residual taste buds and the volume lost by the outright disappearance of many taste buds, was 88% for gerbils, 72% for rats, and 65% for hamsters. Evaluation in gerbils of the co-occurrence of taste buds and axons suggests residual taste buds were neurotrophically supported. Every gerbil fungiform papilla that lacked axons lacked a taste bud. Every fungiform papillae that had a residual taste bud had axons; axons were absent from 22% of empty fungiform papillae. Diminished numbers of gustatory neurotrophic axons could account for both the loss of fungiform taste buds and the reduced volume of residual taste buds. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
