Description: Abstract (Co,Ni)O solid solutions are considered as promising protective materials of O2‐evolving anodes for Al production. In this context, two solid‐state synthesis methods, namely high‐energy ball milling (HEBM) and calcination, have been evaluated for the synthesis of (Co,Ni)O solid solutions. In all cases, CoxNi1‐xO solid solutions can be formed over the whole composition range. However, undesired WC contaminant is observed using the HEBM method due to the erosion of the milling tools. Their thermal stability in air has been analyzed by thermogravimetric analyzes (TGA) complemented by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. It is shown that CoxNi1‐xO solid solutions are stable at 1000°C over the whole composition range whereas they are only stable for x ≤46 and x ≤22 at 800°C and 700°C, respectively. For higher Co contents, the formation of Co3O4 is observed. This is a relevant information for their future use for Al production, which can be done at different temperatures (~700‐1000°C) depending of the electrolyte composition. Description: Neurotransmitter-gated ion channels of the Cys-loop receptor family mediate fast neurotransmission throughout the nervous system. The molecular processes of neurotransmitter binding, subsequent opening of the ion channel and ion permeation remain poorly understood. Here we present the X-ray structure of a mammalian Cys-loop receptor, the mouse serotonin 5-HT3 receptor, at 3.5 A resolution. The structure of the proteolysed receptor, made up of two fragments and comprising part of the intracellular domain, was determined in complex with stabilizing nanobodies. The extracellular domain reveals the detailed anatomy of the neurotransmitter binding site capped by a nanobody. The membrane domain delimits an aqueous pore with a 4.6 A constriction. In the intracellular domain, a bundle of five intracellular helices creates a closed vestibule where lateral portals are obstructed by loops. This 5-HT3 receptor structure, revealing part of the intracellular domain, expands the structural basis for understanding the operating mechanism of mammalian Cys-loop receptors.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hassaine, Gherici -- Deluz, Cedric -- Grasso, Luigino -- Wyss, Romain -- Tol, Menno B -- Hovius, Ruud -- Graff, Alexandra -- Stahlberg, Henning -- Tomizaki, Takashi -- Desmyter, Aline -- Moreau, Christophe -- Li, Xiao-Dan -- Poitevin, Frederic -- Vogel, Horst -- Nury, Hugues -- England -- Nature. 2014 Aug 21;512(7514):276-81. doi: 10.1038/nature13552. Description: The peopling of the Americas has been the subject of extensive genetic, archaeological and linguistic research; however, central questions remain unresolved. One contentious issue is whether the settlement occurred by means of a single migration or multiple streams of migration from Siberia. The pattern of dispersals within the Americas is also poorly understood. To address these questions at a higher resolution than was previously possible, we assembled data from 52 Native American and 17 Siberian groups genotyped at 364,470 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Here we show that Native Americans descend from at least three streams of Asian gene flow. Most descend entirely from a single ancestral population that we call 'First American'. However, speakers of Eskimo-Aleut languages from the Arctic inherit almost half their ancestry from a second stream of Asian gene flow, and the Na-Dene-speaking Chipewyan from Canada inherit roughly one-tenth of their ancestry from a third stream. We show that the initial peopling followed a southward expansion facilitated by the coast, with sequential population splits and little gene flow after divergence, especially in South America. A major exception is in Chibchan speakers on both sides of the Panama isthmus, who have ancestry from both North and South America.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3615710/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3615710/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Reich, David -- Patterson, Nick -- Campbell, Desmond -- Tandon, Arti -- Mazieres, Stephane -- Ray, Nicolas -- Parra, Maria V -- Rojas, Winston -- Duque, Constanza -- Mesa, Natalia -- Garcia, Luis F -- Triana, Omar -- Blair, Silvia -- Maestre, Amanda -- Dib, Juan C -- Bravi, Claudio M -- Bailliet, Graciela -- Corach, Daniel -- Hunemeier, Tabita -- Bortolini, Maria Catira -- Salzano, Francisco M -- Petzl-Erler, Maria Luiza -- Acuna-Alonzo, Victor -- Aguilar-Salinas, Carlos -- Canizales-Quinteros, Samuel -- Tusie-Luna, Teresa -- Riba, Laura -- Rodriguez-Cruz, Maricela -- Lopez-Alarcon, Mardia -- Coral-Vazquez, Ramon -- Canto-Cetina, Thelma -- Silva-Zolezzi, Irma -- Fernandez-Lopez, Juan Carlos -- Contreras, Alejandra V -- Jimenez-Sanchez, Gerardo -- Gomez-Vazquez, Maria Jose -- Molina, Julio -- Carracedo, Angel -- Salas, Antonio -- Gallo, Carla -- Poletti, Giovanni -- Witonsky, David B -- Alkorta-Aranburu, Gorka -- Sukernik, Rem I -- Osipova, Ludmila -- Fedorova, Sardana A -- Vasquez, Rene -- Villena, Mercedes -- Moreau, Claudia -- Barrantes, Ramiro -- Pauls, David -- Excoffier, Laurent -- Bedoya, Gabriel -- Rothhammer, Francisco -- Dugoujon, Jean-Michel -- Larrouy, Georges -- Klitz, William -- Labuda, Damian -- Kidd, Judith -- Kidd, Kenneth -- Di Rienzo, Anna -- Freimer, Nelson B -- Price, Alkes L -- Ruiz-Linares, Andres -- BB/1021213/1/Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council/United Kingdom -- GM057672/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- GM079558/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- GM079558-S1/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- HG006399/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- MH075007/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- NS037484/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- NS043538/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- R01 GM079558/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- R01 GM100233/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- R01 HG006399/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- R21 DK073818/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- Canadian Institutes of Health Research/Canada -- England -- Nature. 2012 Aug 16;488(7411):370-4. doi: 10.1038/nature11258.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts 02115, USA. reich@genetics.med.harvard.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22801491" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Several species of flatfishes (Pleuronectiformes) have been studied by isoenzyme electrophoresis and DNA/DNA hybridization to establish the evolutionary relationships of this group of fishes. This molecular data-based phylogeny has been compared to previously described phylogenies based on morpho-anatomical criteria. A number of discrepancies are observed and discussed. The high degree of genetic divergence observed within the families of Pleuronectiformes indicates that their origin seems to be much older than suggested by their striking morphological similarity.

Notes: To analyse HLA and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) association in the ethnically mixed population of La Réunion island, we carried out a family study on 70 diabetic subjects. HLA-DQA1, -DQB1 and -DRB1 typing was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), completed by PCR-sequence-specific oligonucleotide (SSO) and PCR-sequence-specific priming (SSP). Haplotype-relative risks (HRR) were determined with the non-transmitted parental haplotypes as controls, and relative risks (RR) were calculated with a classical case-control study. The most significant risks were found for the cis and trans combinations between DQA1*03 or *0501 (Arg52+) and DQB1*02 or *0302 (Asp57−) alleles, suggesting a direct role for the HLA-DQ heterodimer in IDDM susceptibility. Interestingly, due to the mixed origin of the population, the trans-encoded DQ molecules in the (DR3)-DQA1*0501-DQB1*02/(DR4)-DQA1*03-DQB 1*0302 subjects were also found cis-encoded in patients with the (DR7 or 9)-DQA1*03-DQB1*02 haplotype and in a patient with the rare (DR 11)-DQA1*0501-DQB 1*0302 haplotype. A relative predispositional effect (RPE) analysis gave significant haplotype-IDDM+ associations in the following order: (DR3)-DQA1*0501-DQB1*02〉(DR4)-DQA1*03-DQB1*0302〉(DR9)-DQA1*03-DQB*02〉(DR7)-DQA1*03-DQB1*02〉(DR2)-DQA1*01-DQB1*0502. No protective effect remained significant once the susceptible haplotypes were removed. A stratification study showed a stronger influence of the DQ genes than DRB1 alleles within the DR7 haplotypes. On the other hand, IDDM subjects with only one susceptible haplotype had inherited this haplotype more often from their father than from their mother. This paternal effect could be related to the greater risk of IDDM in offspring of diabetic fathers than the risk in offspring of diabetic mothers.

Notes: Abstract The ‘transmissible enteritis’ of Guinea fowl chick, which appears in less than 12 weeks birds, is characterized by a yellowish diarrhea and a general dehydratation, a swelling of caecums, a large mortality. The mycological analysis of food points out that it is not a classical mycotoxicosis. On the other hand, the isolation ofGeotrichum candidum from the intestine of dead animals let presume that this fungus plays a role in the disease. There is no transmission by egg. The dungs, the litters and the drink water can be origin of contamination. Experimental infections with cultures ofGeotrichum are actually unsuccessful.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The mycological examination of nine samples of apples intended for industrial use, shows a predominance of fungal alterations related with postharvest injuries. Among the detected fungi, the possible interferences of Penicillium expansum (patulin producer) and of Fusarium (trichothecenes elaborators) in the etiology of esophageal cancer are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. Many contaminated sites contain a variety of toxicants. Risk assessment and the development of water quality criteria therefore require information on the interactive effects among toxicants in such mixtures. Interactions between metals are relatively well studied, but little is known about interactions between metals and hydrocarbons. This study investigated the interaction between phenanthrene and zinc in the sheepshead minnow Cyprinodon variegatus. Interaction studies were performed with 7-day-old minnows in 96-h bioassays with zinc and phenanthrene at a fixed ratio and with varying proportions of zinc and phenanthrene. Mixture toxicity was quantified with the toxic unit, additive index, and excess function methods. All three methods generally indicated an antagonistic interaction between phenanthrene and zinc, though the results also provide some evidence for a synergistic interaction at low toxicant levels or at specific phenanthrene-to-zinc ratios. Short-term uptake experiments were conducted to determine if the strong antagonistic interaction observed when zinc and phenanthrene were present at 50% of their LC50 values was due to effects of zinc and phenanthrene on each other's uptake. Significantly less 65Zn uptake occurred in the presence of phenanthrene than in its absence. In contrast, zinc did not appear to affect the uptake of 14C-phenanthrene.
