    Description: Fluvial bedrock erosion rates are thought to be proportional to the energy delivered to the channel bed by impacting bedload particles. Combining methods for field measurements of impact energy and for automatic sensing of grain size distributions in the instrumented channel of the Erlenbach, we show that the larger a bedload grain is, the more efficient it is in transferring energy to the stream bed. On average, the largest grain size class contributes only 9% to the total bedload mass, but is responsible for more than 40% of the energy delivery. This effect may help to explain the predominance of extreme floods, when large grains are mobile, in driving long-term erosion. While the mechanistic saltation-abrasion model accounts for hydraulic forcing of energy delivery, the observed grain size effect is not captured. We suggest that the discrepancy arises from differing transport modes (rolling, sliding, saltation) not currently captured in modeling.

    Description: Neurotransmitter-gated ion channels of the Cys-loop receptor family mediate fast neurotransmission throughout the nervous system. The molecular processes of neurotransmitter binding, subsequent opening of the ion channel and ion permeation remain poorly understood. Here we present the X-ray structure of a mammalian Cys-loop receptor, the mouse serotonin 5-HT3 receptor, at 3.5 A resolution. The structure of the proteolysed receptor, made up of two fragments and comprising part of the intracellular domain, was determined in complex with stabilizing nanobodies. The extracellular domain reveals the detailed anatomy of the neurotransmitter binding site capped by a nanobody. The membrane domain delimits an aqueous pore with a 4.6 A constriction. In the intracellular domain, a bundle of five intracellular helices creates a closed vestibule where lateral portals are obstructed by loops.     Description: A nearly complete skeleton of the archaic pinniped Enaliarctos, found in late Oligocene or early Miocene rocks (approximately 23 million years old) of California, provides new evidence on the origin of pinnipeds. Enaliarctos retains many primitive features expected in the hypothesized common ancestor of pinnipeds. Skeletal modifications seen in Enaliarctos document swimming adaptations and indicate that pinnipeds primitively used the axial skeleton and both fore and hindflippers as sources of propulsion.     Description: The discovery of a Middle to Late Triassic ( approximately 225 to 230 million years old) terrestrial vertebrate fauna from Madagascar is reported. This fauna documents a temporal interval not well represented by continental vertebrate assemblages elsewhere in the world. It contains two new prosauropod dinosaurs, representing some of the earliest dinosaur occurrences known globally.     Description: We performed systematic flume experiments using natural bedload particles to quantify the effect of different parameters on the signal registered by the Swiss plate geophone, a bedload surrogate monitoring system. It was observed that the number of impulses computed from the raw signal clearly depends on bed particle size, mean flow velocity, bed roughness, and to a minor extent on particle shape. The centroid frequency of the signal resulting from the collision of a bedload particle against the geophone plate was found to be inversely related to particle size but to be less sensitive to variations in mean flow velocity and bed roughness than the signal amplitude, which is also related to particle size. Combining frequency and amplitude information resulted in a more robust identification of the transported particles size over a wide range of sizes than using amplitude information alone.     Description: The Swiss plate geophone is a bedload surrogate monitoring system that had been calibrated in several gravel-bed streams through field calibration measurements. Field calibration measurements are generally expensive and time consuming, therefore we investigated the possibility to replace it by a flume-based calibration approach. We applied impulse-diameter relations for the Swiss plate geophone obtained from systematic flume experiments to field calibration measurements in four different gravel-bed streams. The flume-based relations were successfully validated with direct bedload samples from field measurements, by estimating the number of impulses based on observed bedload masses per grain size class. We estimated bedload transport mass by developing flume-based and stream-dependent calibration procedures for the Swiss plate geophone system using an additional empirical function. The estimated masses are on average in the range of ±90% of measured bedload masses in the field, but the accuracy is generally improved for larger transported bedload masses. We discuss the limitations of the presented flume-based calibration approach. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
