    Description: Renania del Norte-Westfalia (RNW) es el mayor estado federal (land) de la República Federal de Alemania. Hasta la década de 1970, la región del Rin-Ruhr, con una población de unos 12 millones de habitantes y una potente industria química, del carbón y del acero, se vio afectada por graves problemas de contaminación. En los años setenta, la protección medioambiental apareció en las agendas políticas nacionales e internacionales. Los gobiernos federales y el estatal lanzaron múltiples intervenciones legislativas y económicas para limpiar ríos, suelos y aire. Como resultado, surgió una ecoindustria muy competitiva. En este artículo, se resumen las características de las ecoindustrias y se describe el cambio estructural de la región del Ruhr. Asimismo, centrándose en el mesonivel y empleando los ejemplos de la gestión energética y la gestión municipal de residuos, se destacan los puntos fuertes y los puntos débiles de las políticas económicas regionales de clusters que apoyan las ecoindustrias en RNW.

    Description: Die multilaterale Politik bekennt sich zum Zwei-Grad-Ziel, um den Klimawandel zu begrenzen. Sie stützt sich dazu explizit auf Empfehlungen "der Wissenschaft". Bemerkenswert ist, dass sie sich dabei nicht - was doch naheläge - auf das IPCC beruft. Dieses Gremium hat sich nämlich explizit versagt, "Werturteile" wie das Zwei-Grad-Ziel zu formulieren. Da die Politik aber nach solchen Urteilen verlangt, bedient sie sich pragma tisch an anderer Stelle - bei einer Wissenschaft, die nicht strikt zwischen Fakten und Werturteilen trennt. Letzteres sollte auch ein Kennzeichen einer Wissenschaft von der Nachhaltigkeit (sustainability science) sein.

    Description: Since the 1970s, climate change has dominated the international scientific and political agenda. In particular, the foundation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at the end of the 1980s played a major role for the further enhancement of efforts in the field of climate change sciences. However, to understand the interaction of the worldwide coordination of climate change sciences as well as the role of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and its consequences, it is worthwhile to take a look at the self-conception of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's tasks and work. This paper gives an idea of the history of international climate change science, its representation in public discourse and the role of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change by comprehensively illustrating its tasks, organization and self-image. Furthermore, the article tries to argue that the hitherto accepted concept of science followed within this body fails to integrate the idea of scientific ethics. It can be concluded that the conception of science represented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has heavily influenced worldwide attention to climate change, its becoming part of the political agenda as well as the ethical consequences.

    Description: The activities carried out within Task 2 aim to collect, organize and synthesize geological, geomorphological, geotechnical and geophysical data for the location site of the Accelerometric National Network (RAN) stations in Italy, managed by the Department of Civil Protection. Knowledge of geological and geomorphological context, and the mechanical and dynamic characteristics of the stations subsoil is an important factor for studies on the attenuation laws and the choice of accelerograms related to the subsoil category provided by seismic code. Having to produce on a large number of sites (over 600), this knowledge have to be rationalized and homogenized so as to arrive at a common and comparable level of information. With this goal has been organized and implemented the activities within Task 2.

    Description: In the framework of the agreement between Italian Civil Protection and INGV (DPC-S3 project), we are studying the feasibility of a Tsunami Early Warning System (TEWS) for the coasts of Italy. The performances of such a prototype TEWS have been evaluated. The underlying concept is borrowed from the Japan Meteorological Agency's TEWS. This tsunami warning system is in fact based on a set of elementary submarine earthquake sources. In case of an earthquake, the wave heights generated by each elementary source must be interpolated to evaluate in real-time if and where a significant tsunami could have been generated, in order to launch an alert for the most exposed coastlines. A series of synthetic tests have been conducted in order to assess the optimal resolution of the parameter's space sampling, and to construct a sufficiently accurate database of elementary sources. The results of the synthetic tests are presented here. Moreover, the Mw=6.9 May 2003 Boumerdes- Zemmouri (Algeria) earthquake, which generated a moderate tsunami causing significant damages particularly at Balearic Islands (Spain), has been used as a case-study for the validation of the database.

    Description: Recent studies on seismological data indicate that earthquake magnitude scales with either the dominant period or the peak amplitude in the seismogram’s first few seconds. At first sight, this may indicate that the earthquake’s final size is somehow related to the way rupture starts. One working hypothesis is that strong radiation from the initial phase of rupture is indicative of a triggering asperity releasing a consistent amount of elastic energy, with the potential to drive the fracture to large extents. We tested this concept with a number of numerical simulations, but within the models investigated, scaling was found only for ruptures extending up to about four times the size of the initial asperity; at larger distances the correlation was lost. Alternatively, a careful kinematic analysis of the earthquake source radiation shows that the initial signal recorded at any station does not necessarily correspond to the rupture initiation but may represent an extended portion of the radiating source. Using the concept of isochrones, we show that the apparent scaling may be explained by a simple kinematic model respecting causality, up to a given magnitude threshold where the scaling relation saturates. The saturation level is in agreement with that observed in some, but not all, of the real seismicity catalogs.

    Description: In the present work, for a study area located in the southernmost province of continental Italy, data concerning the historical series of floods which have occurred since XVII century have been collected. Damages caused by flood events were discussed together with rainfall regime and trend (for the period in which data are available) and with main modifications due to variations in population number. The aim was to assess if the frequency of damaging floods is changing and if there is a role of rainfall and/or of anthropic modifications of land use on these changes. 150 damaging floods were analysed; 4% of the total were floods which caused damages to people, and which mainly occurred in the past centuries. Notwithstanding, the trend of damaging floods is increasing due to the effects of floods observed in the last decades. At the same time, the rainfall trend is generally decreasing, as observed at regional scale, and not significant to justify the flood recurrence increase. The population trend is characterised by a huge increase observed in the last decades. On this basis, the progressive urban enlargement, realised careless of both drainage network characteristics and extreme floods, can be considered as the main source of increasing risks due to damaging floods.

    Description: The determination of the maximum temperature achieved by friction melt (Tmelt) in pseudotachylyte-bearing faults is crucial to estimate earthquake source parameters (e.g., earthquake energy budgets, coseismic fault strength) on a geological basis. Here we investigated the mineralogy of a pseudotachylyte from the Gole Larghe Fault (Italian Alps) by using X-ray powder diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and EDS-equipped field emission scanning electron microscopy. In particular, we report the presence of the hexagonal polymorph of CaAl2Si2O8 (dmisteinbergite) in a pseudotachylyte. Published experimental work shows dmisteinbergite can crystallize at 1200–1400 °C by rapid quenching. Therefore, the presence of dmisteinbergite in pseudotachylyte could be a reliable geothermometer for friction melts for which Tmelt has only as yet been estimated.

    Description: Active volcanoes characterized by open conduit conditions generate sonic and infrasonic signals, whose investigation provides useful information for both monitoring purposes and studying the dynamics of explosive processes. In this work, we discuss the automatic procedures implemented for a real-time application to the data acquired by a permanent network of five infrasound stations running at Mt. Etna volcano. The infrasound signals at Mt. Etna consist in amplitude transients, called infrasound events. The adopted procedure uses a multi-algorithm approach for event detection, counting, characterization and location. It is designed for an efficient and accurate processing of infrasound records provided by single-site and array stations. Moreover, the source mechanism of these events can be investigated off-line or in near real-time by using three different models: i) Strombolian bubble; ii) resonating conduit and iii) Helmholtz resonator. The infrasound waveforms allow us to choose the most suitable model, to get quantitative information about the source and to follow the time evolution of the source parameters.

    Description: The Messina Straits is the locus of one of the strongest seismic event that ever hit Italy during historical times, the 1908 Mw 7.1 earthquake, and the same region also suffered major damage from other strong earthquakes in the last few centuries. However, despite the large amount of data and studies carried out, our knowledge of the present-day deformation of this area is still debated. While a general consensus has been reached about the kinematics of the 1908 causative fault, less is known about the rate and shape of interseismic loading across the Straits, and debate continues also about the general kinematics and geodynamic framework of this region which are strongly influenced by subduction and retreat of Ionian lithosphere. Thanks to the increasing number of GPS Networks in the study region it is now possible to study both the regional kinematics and strain loading across active faults. In this work we analyze all the observations collected over the Messina non-permanent GPS Network for the 1994-2008 time span, and data from about 600 CGPS stations in the Euro-Mediterranean region, using the GAMIT software. The output of our analysis is a new and denser velocity field, which is used to study the plate kinematics and the rate of interseismic strain building across the Straits. GPS velocities show a sudden change in their orientation across the Straits moving to NNW-ward, in Estern Sicily, to NNE-ward in Western Calabria, depicting this area as a primary boundary between two different tectonic domains. The maximum strain-rates observed across the Straits are about 120 nanostrain/yr, with extension oriented about normal to the coasts of Sicily according to the presence of a normal fault. The measured velocity gradient can be used to model the creeping dislocation at depth, however, over the Messina Straits the interseismic elastic strains accumulating across other nearby active faults can significantly affect the observed velocity gradient.For this reason we investigate, using a regional elastic block-modeling approach, these effects. We use the block model to test for different microplates configurations and to account for nearby active faults while inverting for optimal fault geometry and intersismic slip-rates across the Straits.

    Description: Stromboli is a volcanic island that is part of the Aeolian arch in the Mediterranean Sea (Italy). It is one of the most active volcanoes in Europe. Its moderate, but persistent, explosive activity makes it an ideal site for studies into the seismogenic processes in volcanic areas (Auger et al. 2006; Chouet et al. 2003; Chouet et al. 2008; D’Auria and Martini 2008; Del Pezzo et al. 1992; Esposito et al. 2008; Jaupart and Vergniolle 1989; Martini et al. 2007); it also attracts a lot of tourists. In the past, this combination of tourism and volcanic activity was not considered to be dangerous, but over the past few decades, Stromboli has produced stronger explosions that have in some cases injured people visiting the summit area. Moreover, in the recent history of Stromboli, two effusive eruptions have occurred that were accompanied by dangerous phenomena such as tsunami and vulcanian explosions. The first of these effusive eruptions (on 28 December 2002) produced a lava flow on the Sciara del Fuoco side, which is the northwest flank of the island. Two days later, a landslide occurred on this flank, which resulted in the propagation of a 10-m tsunami wave around the coasts of the island. These events demonstrate that Stromboli can be dangerous, even if its activity is not very energetic. Indeed, the Sciara del Fuoco structure is a weakness zone of the volcanic edifice that fractures when the explosive activity increases, giving rise to this effusive activity (Martini et al. 2007). Moreover, during the past two effusive eruptions, vulcanian explosions were associated with the end stages of the effusive phases. These damaged the village of Ginostra and caused fires in the vegetation. For these reasons, in January 2003, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV; the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) started to install a broadband seismic network that is designed to monitor Stromboli’s volcanic activity. This nature of the activity requires broadband instruments because the eruptive processes generate signals that span a wide range of frequencies (Chouet et al. 2003; Neuberg et al. 1994). At present, the typical seismic signals that are being recorded on Stromboli are: volcanic tremors with frequencies of 1–6 Hz; explosion quakes that include components with different frequency contents, ranging from some tens of seconds up to 10 Hz; long-period (LP) earthquakes with frequencies of 1–6 Hz; volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes with a frequency band of 1–20 Hz; and landslide signals with frequencies of 1–10 Hz. In particular, very long period (VLP) events with frequencies of 0.02–1 Hz are associated with the Strombolian explosions and represent the lower frequency content of the explosion quakes.     Description: The 2009 Arctic sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) was the most intense event of this kind ever observed. Unique ground-based measurements of middle atmospheric profiles for temperature, O3, CO, and N2O obtained at Thule (76.5°N, 68.8°W), Greenland, in the period January – early March are used to show the evolution of the 2009 SSW in the region of its maximum intensity. The first sign of the SSW was detected at θ~2000 K on January 19, when a rapid decrease in CO mixing ratio took place. The first evidence of a temperature increase was observed at the same level on 22 January, the earliest date on which lidar measurements reached above ~50 km. The warming propagated from the upper to the lower stratosphere in 7 days and the record maximum temperature of 289 K was observed between 1300 and 1500 K potential temperature on 22 January. A strong vortex splitting was associated with the SSW. Stratospheric backward trajectories indicate that airmasses arriving to Thule during the warming peak underwent a rapid compression and an intense adiabatic warming of up to 50 K. The rapid advection of air from the extra-tropics was also occasionally observed to produce elevated values of N2O mixing ratio. Starting from mid-February the temperature profile and the N2O mixing ratio returned to the pre-warming values in the mid and upper stratosphere, indicating the reformation of the vortex at these levels. In late winter, vertical descent from starting altitudes of ~60 km is estimated from CO profiles to be 0.25±0.05 km/day.

    Description: Pyroclast textures document volcanic conduit processes and may be key to hazard forecasting. Here we show that the relative abundance of mingled, variably crystallized domains in pyroclasts from scoria cone eruptions provide a record of magma ascent velocity and can be used to predict the onset of violent Strombolian activity. Scoria clasts from the Croscat Complex Scoria Cone (Spain) ubiquitously show m- to cm-sized, microlite-rich domains (MRD) intermingled with volumetrically-dominant, microlite-poor ones (MPD). Glass and bulk composition show that MRDs formed by microlite crystallization of MPDs, the former residing longer in a relatively cooler, degassed zone lining the conduit walls, the latter traveling faster in the central, hotter streamline. MPD and MRD magmas intermingled along the interface between the two velocity zones. The proportion of MPD and MRD in different tephra layers reflects the extent of the fast- and slow-flowing zones, thus reflecting the ascent velocity profile of magma during the different phases. At Croscat, the MPD/MRD volume ratio increased rapidly during the early Strombolian activity, peaked around the Strombolian to violent Strombolian shift, and then decreased smoothly irrespective of shifts in eruptive style. We suggest that magma ascent velocity escalated during the Strombolian phase due to the buoyant push of the underlying, volatile-rich magma that was about to drive the following violent Strombolian activity. Monitoring the MPD/MRD ratio of tephra during ongoing scoria cone eruptions may reveal changes in magma flow conditions and could forecast the onset of hazardous violent Strombolian activity.

    Description: Climate change negotiations aim to reduce net greenhouse-gas emissions by encouraging direct reductions of emissions and crediting countries for their terrestrial greenhouse-gas sinks. Ecosystem carbon dioxide uptake has offset nearly 10% of Europe’s fossil fuel emissions, but not all of this may be creditable under the rules of the Kyoto Protocol. Although this treaty recognizes the importance of methane and nitrous oxide emissions, scientific research has largely focused on carbon dioxide. Here we review recent estimates of European carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide fluxes between 2000 and 2005, using both top-down estimates based on atmospheric observations and bottom-up estimates derived from ground-based measurements. Both methods yield similar fluxes of greenhouse gases, suggesting that methane emissions from feedstock and nitrous oxide emissions from arable agriculture are fully compensated for by the carbon dioxide sink provided by forests and grasslands. As a result, the balance for all greenhouse gases across Europe’s terrestrial biosphere is near neutral, despite carbon sequestration in forests and grasslands. The trend towards more intensive agriculture and logging is likely to make Europe’s land surface a significant source of greenhouse gases. The development of land management policies which aim to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions should be a priority.

    Description: We present a new method for measuring SO2 with the data from the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance radiometer) orbital sensor. The method consists of adjusting the SO2 column amount until the ratios of radiance simulated on several ASTER bands match the observations. We present a sensitivity analysis for this method, and two case studies. The sensitivity analysis shows that the selected band ratios depend much less on atmospheric humidity, sulfate aerosols, surface altitude and emissivity than the raw radiances. Measurements with b25% relative precision are achieved, but only when the thermal contrast between the plume and the underlying surface is higher than 10 K. For the case studies we focused on Miyakejima and Etna, two volcanoes where SO2 is measured regularly by COSPEC or scanning DOAS. The SO2 fluxes computed from a series of ten images of Miyakejima over the period 2000–2002 is in agreement with the long term trend of measurement for this volcano. On Etna, we compared SO2 column amounts measured by ASTER with those acquired simultaneously by ground-based automated scanning DOAS. The column amounts compare quite well, providing a more rigorous validation of the method. The SO2 maps retrieved with ASTER can provide quantitative insights into the 2D structure of non-eruptive volcanic plumes, their dispersion and their progressive depletion in SO2.

    Description: We present the first nitrogen isotope data from hydrothermal fluids of Graciosa, Terceira and S. Miguel Islands (Azores, Portugal), together with helium isotope composition. 15N values are slightly enriched in light isotopes (from -0.7‰ to -2.2‰) with respect to air, while 3He/4He ratios range from 5 to 6 Ra in Sao Miguel island and from 8 to 9.1 Ra in Graciosa and Terceira islands. The latter values are similar to those found in olivine phenocrysts of basalts (Moreira et al., 1999; Madureira et al., 2005). Such isotope signatures seem to point to the presence of two different deeply-derived end-members: a 3He-rich primitive end-member evident in Terceira and Graciosa islands samples and a 3He-poor end-member characterizing samples from S. Miguel island. According to Madureira et al. (2005), the He primitive component which is more evident in the central parts of the Azores archipelago has to be related to a lower mantle contribution into the prevailing MORB component. On the contrary, the origin of the radiogenic crustal component is still open and debated between the contribution of recycled terrigenous sediments (Turner et al., 1997) and oceanic mantle lithosphere (Schaefer et al., 2002). Since 15N values from fluids vents and inclusions in basalt glasses were discovered to be good geochemical tracers of magma genetic processes, we determined molecular and isotope nitrogen composition (15NN2) in some hydrothermal fluids with the aim to provide additional information on the mantle composition beneath the Azores archipelago. Based on the N2/36Ar ratio we computed for each samples the 15N values of the non-atmospheric nitrogen (15Ndeep). Volatiles emitted from Graciosa and Terceira islands seem to have a common deep nitrogen isotope signature of about -1.5‰ likely resulting from a mixing between lower mantle (15N from 1‰ to 4‰) and upper mantle (15NMORB from -3‰ to -7‰). On the other hand, the 15Ndeep feeding the fumaroles at S. Miguel is close to -5.5‰. Such a 15N-depleted values seem to indicate a probable nitrogen origin from a deep source derived from the recycling of ancient oceanic plate into the upper mantle (MORB). rather than from the recycling of terrigenous sediments transported on top of the descending plate that should have lead to 15N-enrichments.

    Description: The quaternary volcanic complex of Mount Amiata is located in southern Tuscany (Italy) and represents the most recent manifestation of the Tuscan Magmatic Province. The region is characterised by a large thermal anomaly and by the presence of numerous CO2-rich gas emissions and geothermal features, mainly located at the periphery of the volcanic complex. Two geothermal systems are located, at increasing depths, in the carbonate and metamorphic formations beneath the volcanic complex. The shallow volcanic aquifer is separated from the deep geothermal systems by a low permeability unit (Ligurian Unit). A measured CO2 discharge through soils of 1.8 109 mol a 1 shows that large amounts of CO2 move from the deep reservoir to the surface. A large range in d13CTDIC ( 21.07 to +3.65) characterises the waters circulating in the aquifers of the region and the mass and isotopic balance of TDIC allows distinguishing a discharge of 0.3 109 mol a 1 of deeply sourced CO2 in spring waters. The total natural CO2 discharge (2.1 109 mol a 1) is slightly less than minimum CO2 output estimated by an indirect method (2.8 109 mol a 1), but present-day release of 5.8 109 mol a 1 CO2 from deep geothermal wells may have reduced natural CO2 discharge. The heat transported by groundwater, computed considering the increase in temperature from the infiltration area to the discharge from springs, is of the same order of magnitude, or higher, than the regional conductive heat flow (〉200 mWm 2) and reaches extremely high values (up to 2700mWm 2) in the north-eastern part of the study area. Heat transfer occurs mainly by conductive heating in the volcanic aquifer and by uprising gas and vapor along fault zones and in those areas where low permeability cover is lacking. The comparison of CO2 flux, heat flow and geological setting shows that near surface geology and hydrogeological setting play a central role in determining CO2 degassing and heat transfer patterns.

    Description: Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) is currently the soundest basis for the evaluation of the hazard for site-specific engineering design purposes. An increasing number of building codes worldwide acknowledges the uniform hazard spectra as the reference ground motion to determine design actions on structures and to select input signals for seismic structural analysis. The new Italian seismic code requires the seismic input for nonlinear dynamic analysis to be selected on the basis of dominating events, e.g., identified via disaggregation of seismic hazard. In the present study, the design earthquakes expressed in terms of magnitude (M), distance (R) and ε, were investigated for a wide region in the southern Apennines, Italy. The hazards corresponding to peak ground acceleration and spectral acceleration at 1 second having 475-year return period were disaggregated. For each of the disaggregation variables the shapes of the joint and marginal probability density functions were studied and the first two modes of M, R and ε were extracted and mapped. The obtained results can be used as additional information to better identify the design earthquakes. Moreover, for the study area, they allow the assessment of the seismic source contribution to various frequency ranges of the design spectrum.

    Description: Variations in the intensity of high-latitude Northern Hemisphere summer insolation, driven largely by precession of the equinoxes, are widely thought to control the timing of Late Pleistocene glacial terminations. However, recently it has been suggested that changes in Earth’s obliquity may be a more important mechanism. We present a new speleothem-based North Atlantic marine chronology that shows that the penultimate glacial termination (Termination II) commenced 141,000 ± 2500 years before the present, too early to be explained by Northern Hemisphere summer insolation but consistent with changes in Earth’s obliquity. Our record reveals that Terminations I and II are separated by three obliquity cycles and that they started at near-identical obliquity phases.

    Description: The northern Adriatic plate underwent Permian-Mesozoic rifting and was later shortened by three orogenic belts (i.e., Apennines, Alps and Dinarides) developed along three independent subduction zones. The inherited Mesozoic horst and graben grain determined structural undulations of the three thrust belts. Salients developed in grabens or more shaly basins, whereas recesses formed regularly around horsts. A new interpretation of seismic reflection profiles, subsidence rates from stratigraphic analysis, and GPS data prove that the three orogens surrounding the northern Adriatic plate are still active. The NE-ward migration of the Apennines subduction hinge determines the present-day faster subsidence rate in the western side of the northern Adriatic (〉1 mm/year). This is recorded also by the SW-ward dip of the foreland regional monocline, and the SW-ward increase of the depth of the Tyrrhenian sedimentary layer, as well as the increase in thickness of the Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments. These data indicate the dominant influence of the Apennines subduction, which controls the asymmetric subsidence in the northern Adriatic realm. The Dinarides front has been tilted by the Apennines subduction hinge, as shown by the eroded Dalmatian anticlines subsiding in the eastern Adriatic Sea. GPS data suggest that southward tilting of the western and central Southern Alps, whereas the eastern Southern Alps are uplifting. The obtained strain rates are on average within 20 nstrain/year. The horizontal shortening obtained from GPS velocities at the front of the three belts surrounding the northern Adriatic plate are about 2–3 mm/year (Northern Apennines), 1–2 mm/year (Southern Alps), and 〈1 mm/year (Dinarides). The shortening directions tend to be perpendicular to the thrust belt fronts. The areas where the strain rate sharply decreases along a tectonic feature (e.g., the Ferrara salient, the Venetian foothills front) are proposed to be occupied by locked structures where stress is accumulating in the brittle layer and thus seismically prone. Finally, we speculate that, since the effects of three independent subduction zones coexist and overlap in the same area, plate boundaries are passive features.

    Description: A period of bad weather conditions due to prolonged intense rainfall and strong winds can trigger landslides, floods, secondary floods (accumulation of rain on surfaces with low permeability), and sea storms, causing damage to humans and infrastructure. As a whole, these periods of bad weather and triggered phenomena can be defined as damaging hydrogeological events (DHEs). We define a methodological approach based on seven simple indexes to analyze such events. The indexes describe the return period (T) and trend of rainfall, the extent of hit areas, and the level of damages; they can be considered attributes of georeferenced features and analyzed with GIS techniques. We tested our method in an Italian region frequently hit by DHEs. In a period of 10 years, 747 damaging phenomena (landslides, 43%; floods, 38%) and 94 DHEs have been classified. The road network and housing areas are the most frequently damaged elements, threatened by all types of damaging phenomena. T classes are almost in accordance with the level of damage. These results can be used to outline warning levels for civil protection purposes, to forecast the areas most likely to be hit and the potential ensuing damage, to disseminate information concerning vulnerable areas, and to increase people’s awareness of risk

    Description: Scientific investigations of the Scotia Sea region are crucial to understand the history of the Antarctic continent tectonic evolution and the influence of the aperture of the Drake passage in establishing the Circumpolar Antarctic Current, as stressed by many authors (e.g. Lodolo, 2008). The Scotia Sea occupies a roughly rectangular area of about 900.000 km . This area is limited on three sides by the Scotia Arc, formed by islands and oceanic ridges, which is a remnant of the mountain chain that joined the South American Andes to the Antarctic Peninsula. The western border is represented by the about 1000 km wide Drake passage, that separates today the Tierra del Fuego in South America from the Antarctic continent. A review of the tectonics and evolution of the Scotia Sea can be found in Barker, 2001. The start of the geophysical studies in this area dates back to several decades ago, but only after 1990 instrumental passive seismology started to be widely applied to investigate the crustal properties and the properties of the seismic sources responsible for the strong seismicity level observed along the Scotia plate boundaries. ASAIN started operation in 1992 when a temporary seismograph was installed at the Argentinean Base Esperanza. It grew quickly during the nineties and today five stations are operated in Antarctica and two in Tierra del Fuego. All the Antarctic stations transmit real-time data to the OGS and to the Instituto Antartico Argentino. Esperanza (ESPZ), Jubany (JUBA), San Martin (SMAI) and Orcadas(ORCD) stations also participate in the Virtual European Seismographic Broadband Network (VEBSN) transmitting real time data to the Orfeus Data Centre. On January 16 , 2009 BELA station was added to the network. It is operated at the southernmost Argentinean Base Belgrano II (77° 52' S, 34° 37' W ) located on a rocky outcrop (Nunatak Bertrab) on the Filchner barrier. Its inclusion in the VEBSN is also planned. ASAIN data real-time acquisition is performed using SCREAM software, but also Earthworm and Antelope software are being tested at the OGS Seismological Research Centre.

    Description: The Italian National Institute for Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, OGS) is running the Antarctic Seismographic Argentinean Italian Network (ASAIN), made of 5 seismic stations located in the Scotia Sea region in Antarctica and in Argentina: data from these stations are transferred in real time to the OGS headquarters in Trieste (Italy) via satellite links. OGS is also running, in close cooperation with the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Civil Defense, the North East (NI) Italy seismic network, making use of the Antelope commercial software suite from BRTT as the main acquisition system. As a test to check the global capabilities of Antelope, we set up an instance of Antelope acquiring data in real time from both the regional ASAIN seismic network in Antarctica and a subset of the Global Seismic Network (GSN) funded by the Incorporated Research Institution for Seismology (IRIS). The facilities of the IRIS Data Management System, and specifically the IRIS Data Management Center, were used for real time access to waveform required in this study. Preliminary results over 1 month period indicated that about 82% of the earthquakes with magnitude M〉5.0 listed in the PDE catalogue of the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) were also correctly detected by Antelope, with an average location error of 0.05 degrees and average body wave magnitude Mb estimation error below 0.1. The average time difference between event origin time and the actual time of event determination by Antelope was of about 45’: the comparison with 20’, the IASPEI91 P-wave travel time for 180 degrees distance, and 25’, the estimate of our test system data latency, indicate that Antelope is a serious candidate for regional and global early warning systems. Updated figures calculated over a longer period of time will be presented and discussed.

    Description: The hydrated lime-volcanic ash mortars of imperial age concrete construction in Rome owe their extraordinary durability to a specific alteration facies of scoriaceous ash from the Pozzolane Rosse ignimbrite, erupted at 456±3 ka from Alban Hills volcano. Stratigraphic, petrographic, and chemical investigations demonstrate that during the warm, humid period preceding marine isotope stage 11, hydrolytic pedogenesis produced an argillic horizon in Pozzolane Rosse, with thick illuvial clay that had little reactivity with hydrated lime, as shown by mortars from the Forum of Julius Caesar (46 to 44 BC). In the underlying soil horizon, however, translocated halloysite overlies opal and poorly crystalline clay surface coatings. Imperial age mortars, as from the Forum and Markets of Trajan (AD 96 to 115), show strong reactivity of these components, altered scoria groundmass, and zeolites with hydrated lime. Romans deliberately selected this alkali-rich ash for optimal performance of pozzolanic concretes.

    Description: The main effect of magma-carbonate interaction on magma differentiation is the formation of a silica-undersaturated, alkali-rich residual melt. Such a desilication process was explained as the progressive dissolution of CaCO3 in melt by consumption of SiO2 and MgO to form diopside sensu stricto. Magma chambers emplaced in carbonate substrata, however, are generally associated with magmatic skarns containing clinopyroxene with a high Ca-Tschermak activity in their paragenesis. Data are presented from magma-carbonate interaction experiments, demonstrating that carbonate assimilation is a complex process involving more components than so far assumed. Experimental results show that, during carbonate assimilation, a diopside-hedenbergite-Ca-Tschermak clinopyroxene solid solution is formed and that Ca-Tschermak/diopside and hedenbergite/diopside ratios increase as a function of the progressive carbonate assimilation. Accordingly, carbonate assimilation reaction should be written as follows, taking into account all the involved magmatic components: CaCO3solid+SiO2melt+MgOmelt+FeOmelt+Al2O3melt → (Di-Hd-CaTs)sssolid+CO2fluid The texture of experimental products demonstrates that carbonate assimilation produces three-phases (solid, melt, and fluid) whose main products are: i) diopside-hedenbergite-Ca-Tschermak clinopyroxene solid solution; ii) silica-undersaturated CaO-rich melt; and iii) C-O-H fluid phase. The silica undersaturation of the melt and, more importantly, the occurrence of a CO2-rich fluid phase, must be taken into account as they significantly affect partition coefficients and the redox state of carbonated systems, respectively.

    Description: The double-intertropical convergence zone (DI) systematic error, affecting state-of-the-art coupled general circulation models (CGCM) is examined in the multi-model Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) ensemble of simulations of the twentieth-century climate. Aim of this study is to quantify the DI error on precipitation in the tropical Pacific, with a specific focus on the relationship between the DI error and the representation of large-scale vertical circulation regimes in climate models. The DI rainfall signal is analysed using a regime sorting approach for the vertical circulation regimes. Through the use of this compositing technique, precipitation events are regime-sorted based on the large scale vertical motions, as represented by the mid-tropospheric lagrangian pressure tendency omega500 dynamical proxy. This methodology allows the partition of the precipitation signal into deep and shallow convective components. Following the regime-sorting diagnosis, the total DI bias is split into an error affecting the magnitude of precipitation associated with individual convective events and an error affecting the frequency of occurrence of single convective regimes. It is shown that, despite the existing large intra-model differences, CGCMs can be ultimately grouped into a few homegenous clusters, each featuring a well defined rainfall-vertical circulation relationship in the DI region. Three major behavioural clusters are identified within the AR4 models ensemble: two unimodal distributions, featuring maximum precipitation under subsidence and deep convection regimes, respectively, and one bimodal distribution, displaying both components. Extending this analysis to both coupled and uncoupled (atmosphere-only) AR4 simulations reveals that the DI bias in CGCMs is mainly due to the overly frequent occurrence of deep convection regimes, whereas the error on rainfall magnitude associated with individual convective events is overall consistent with errors already present in the corresponding atmosphere stand-alone simulations. A critical parameter controlling the strength of the DI systematic error is identified in the model-dependent sea surface temperature (SST) threshold leading to the onset of deep convection (THR), combined with the average SST in the south-eastern Pacific.

    Description: Fogo volcano is an active central volcano, with a lake filled caldera, in the central part of São Miguel Island, Azores, whose current activity is limited to hydrothermal manifestations such as active fumarolic fields, thermal and CO2 cold springs and soil diffuse degassing areas. It is affected by important active tectonic structures, with high seismic activity and practically continuous micro-seismicity. A recurrent feature from the seismicity observed in volcanic regions is the occurrence of clusters of similar earthquakes, whose origin can be attributed to the repeated action of a similar source mechanism at the same focal area. Doublets/multiplets were identified in this study within a catalogue of small magnitude (usually 〈 3) volcano tectonic events recorded in 2003–2004 by a selection of stations around Fogo volcano. All events have been cross-correlated and pairs whose waveforms exhibited a cross-correlation coefficient equal to or higher than 0.9 were analysed using the coda-wave interferometry technique. Subtle velocity variations found between events highlight a seasonal cycle of the velocity patterns, with lower velocity in winter time and higher velocity during summer months. Those results, together with quantitative differences between the same doublets at different stations, exhibit an excellent correlation with rainfall. A seasonal effect can also be broadly seen in the seismicity occurrence, and some of the swarms recorded over the two year period occur during the wettest season or close to episodes of abundant (above average) rainfall. Moreover, temporal and spatial analysis of several swarms highlighted the lack of any mainshock–aftershock sequence and organized migration of the hypocenters. This is suggestive of a very heterogeneous stress field. Vp/Vs is found to be lower than usually observed in volcanic areas, an occurrence likely related to the presence of steamy fluid associated with the geothermal system. Taken together, these observations suggest that pore pressurisation plays a major role in controlling a considerable part of the recorded seismicity. The geothermal fluids around Fogo massif have been identified as derived from meteoric water, which infiltrates through Fogo Lake and the volcano flanks and flows from south to north on the northern flank. All those elements seem to point to a role played by rainfall in triggering seismicity at São Miguel, possibly through pressure changes at depth in response to surface rain and/or an interaction with the geothermal system.

    Description: We analyze the volcano seismicity recorded during the 2007 eruption of Stromboli. Data-set is composed of the continuous recordings of a three-component broad-band seismometer and of a strainmeter. Starting from the characterization of the standard activity as a stationary phase of equilibrium, we investigate the non-equilibrium phase of the effusive process. A statistical analysis of the explosions reveals that the occurrence is always driven by a Poisson process as for the standard activity, even approaching the effusion phase, with the only difference in shortening the inter-times just during the effusion. A slightly different process can be advocated for the swarms of the explosions, because a maximum in the distribution of inter-times can be evidenced. Regarding the amplitudes of the explosion-quakes, they have a log-normal distribution until the effusion onset as in the standard Strombolian activity. The actual departure from that stationarity seems to be traced by an early deformative response at very long period. It appears as a transient oscillating signal characterized by a period of about three days that modulates the explosion amplitudes. In a conceptual organ pipe-like model it is related to the chocking of the pipe. The successive activity can be interpreted as the response of volcano to restore the equilibrium condition.

    Description: Mt. Vesuvius (southern Italy) is one of the volcanoes that poses the greatest risk in the world because of its highly explosive eruptive style and its proximity to densely populated areas. The urbanization around Mt. Vesuvius began in ancient times, and the impact of eruptions on human activities has been severe. This is testified to by the ruins of Pompeii, which are covered by the products of the plinian eruption that took place in A.D. 79 (Sigurdsson et al. 1985), and more recently by the published reports of the eruptions that occurred from 1631 to 1944. For these reasons, Mt. Vesuvius was also one of the first volcanoes to be equipped with monitoring instruments. Pioneering instrumental observations began just before the second half of the 1800s, when the Vesuvius Observatory was founded in 1841 (Imbò 1949). At that time, Vesuvius was very active (Ricciardi 2009), and its effusive and explosive eruptions often caused damage to the surrounding areas. At the same time, it was a famous tourist attraction that drew travelers from all over the world (Gasparini and Musella 1991). Since the middle of the 1800s, at least 12 eruptions have occurred that have been superimposed on persistent intra-crater activity that has been characterized by Strombolian explosions and by the formation of small lava lakes. The last eruption occurred on 18 March 1944 and marked a change in the status of Mt. Vesuvius, as it entered a closed-conduit phase that persists today. Following this last eruption, a change occurred in the 1960s, as documented by an increase in the occurrence rate of earthquakes. Since 1972, the monitoring of Mt. Vesuvius has improved over time and become more systematic, so that there is a remarkable dataset relating to the current phase of quiescence. Over more than a century and a half of observations, many monitoring instruments have been used for Mt. Vesuvius, including early seismometers, several of which are now kept in the Museum of Volcanology of the Vesuvius Observatory. The present monitoring system is based on seismological, geodetical geodetical, and geochemical observations performed using an instrumental network that was designed on the basis of the current state of the volcano while also taking into account the likely scenario of future unrest.

    Description: In order to correlate the damages produced by 2002 Molise earthquake to the litostratigraphic and mechanical characteristics of the subsoil, a detailed investigation by in situ and laboratory tests was performed in San Giuliano di Puglia (CB). The investigations were directed both to study the Toppo Capuana marly clays, above which most of the damages of buildings were founds, and, to a lesser extent, the Faeto flysch formation, that is its rigid bedrock. The marly clay deposit is distinguishable in several strata, which varied in relation to the intensity of cracking, that is classified in a rational way. The in situ investigations allowed to recognize the litostratigraphic characters of the area and to reconstruct, with different methods, the main stratigraphic section account for variability of alteration and cracking. The latter factor, although not evident through the physical properties of soils, was of paramount importance in understanding the strength and compressibility behaviour of the soil, and on the overall stress-strain behaviour that controls a seismic response of the subsoil.

    Description: Structural observations carried out on the volcanic Island of Pantelleria show that the tectonic setting is dominated by NNE trending normal faults and by NW-striking right-lateral strike-slip faults with normal component of motion controlled by a ≈N 100°E oriented extension. This mode of deformation also controls the development of the eruptive fissures, dykes and eruptive centres along NNE–SSW belts that may thus represent the surface response to crustal cracking with associated magma intrusions. Magmatic intrusions are also responsible for the impressive vertical deformations that affect during the Late Quaternary the south-eastern segment of the island and producing a large dome within the Pantelleria caldera complex. The results of the structural analysis carried out on the Island of Pantelleria also improves the general knowledge on the Late Quaternary tectonics of the entire Sicily Channel. ESE–WNW directed extension, responsible for both the tectonic and volcano-tectonic features of the Pantelleria Island, also characterizes, at a greater scale, the entire channel as shown by available geodetic and seismological data. This mode of extension reactivates the older NW–SE trending fault segments bounding the tectonic troughs of the Channel as right-lateral strike-slip faults and produces new NNE trending pure extensional features (normal faulting and cracking) that preferentially develop at the tip of the major strike-slip fault zones. We thus relate the Late Quaternary volcanism of the Pelagian Block magmatism to dilatational strain on the NNE-striking extensional features that develop on the pre-existing stretched area and propagate throughout the entire continental crust linking the already up-welled mantle with the surface.

    Description: Il terremoto di magnitudo ML=5.2 che nel 2004 ha colpito il lato occidentale del Lago di Garda (Nord Italia) viene modellato sia nell’approssimazione di sorgente puntiforme sia mediante simulazioni da sorgente estesa, al fine di investigare l’anisotropia del campo di risentimento osservata tra 5 e 15 km di distanza epicentrale. Il confronto con le osservazioni viene effettuato in termini intensità macrosismica IMCS osservata, considerando i soli comuni localizzati su roccia (o formazione «rigida») fino a 40 km dall’epicentro; un ulteriore confronto fra simulazioni e osservazioni viene effettuato utilizzando i dati registrati dalla stazione accelerometrica di Vallio Terme (GVD), localizzata a 13.3 km dall’epicentro, appartenente alla rete nazionale (RAN). Le simulazioni più semplici utilizzano una sorgente puntiforme ed equazioni predittive empiriche in termini di intensità. Le modellazioni a faglia estesa riproducono il campo di scuotimento in termini di valori di picco dello scuotimento, successivamente convertiti in intensità attraverso relazioni empiriche. Nonostante la moderata magnitudo dell’evento, le simulazioni a faglia estesa, che richiedono l’assunzione di ipotesi plausibili sia sulla geometria della sorgente che sulle proprietà di attenuazione del mezzo di propagazione, sono in grado di confermare l’anisotropia osservata della distribuzione di intensità a scala regionale (30×30 km2). Inoltre, poiché la distribuzione delle intensità presenta anche eterogeneità a scala locale (di dimensione inferiore a 3 km), probabilmente dovute ad effetti geologici e geomorfologici, oppure ad effetti di interazione terreno-struttura, nella seconda parte del lavoro vengono presentati alcuni esempi di misure di rumore sismico e di misure di frequenza propria degli edifici.

    Description: In this paper, a sensitivity analysis and procedure development for volcanic-plume sulfur dioxide and ash retrievals using ground thermal infrared camera have been carried out. The semiconductor device camera, considered as a reference, has a spectral range of 8–14 μm with noise equivalent temperature difference that is better than 100 mK at 300 K. The camera will be used to monitor and assess the hazards of Mt. Etna volcano to mitigate the risk and impact of volcanic eruptions on the civil society and transports. A minimum number of filters have been selected for sulfur dioxide (SO2) and volcanic ash retrievals. The sensitivity study has been carried out to determine the SO2 and volcanic ash minimum concentration detectable by the system varying the camera geometry and the atmospheric profiles. Results show a meaningful sensitivity increase considering high instrument altitudes and low camera-elevation angles. For all geometry configurations and monthly profiles, the sensitivity limit varies between 0.5 and 2 g · m−2 for SO2 columnar abundance and between 0.02 and 1 for ash optical depth. Two procedures to detect SO2 and ash, based on the least square fit method and on the brightness temperature difference (BTD) algorithm, respectively, have also been proposed. Results show that high concentration of atmospheric water vapor columnar content significantly reduces the ash-plume effect on the BTD. A water vapor-correction procedure introduced improves the ash retrievals and the cloud discrimination in every season, considering all the camera geometries.

    Description: We describe numerical simulations designed to help elucidate the role of ocean salinity in climate. Using a general circulation model, we study a 100-year sensitivity experiment in which the global-mean salinity is doubled from its present observed value, by adding 35 psu everywhere. The salinity increase produces a rapid global-mean sea-surface warming of 0.8◦ within a few years, caused by reduced vertical mixing associated with changes in cabbeling. The warming is followed by a gradual global mean sea-surface cooling of 0.4 ◦C over the next few decades, caused by an increase in the vertical (downward) component of the isopycnal diffusive heat flux. We find no evidence of impacts on the variability of either the Atlantic thermohaline circulation or the El Ni ̃no/Southern Oscillation. The mean strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning is slightly reduced and the North Atlantic Deep Water penetrates less deeply. Nevertheless, our results dispute claims that higher salinities for the world ocean have profound consequences for the thermohaline circulation. In additional experiments with doubled atmospheric carbon dioxide, we find that the amplitude and spatial pattern of the global warming signal are modified in the hypersaline ocean. In particular, the ocean’s contribution to the climate sensitivity is significantly reduced. We infer the existence of a non-linear interaction between the climate responses to modified carbon dioxide and modified salinity.

    Description: The Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect is the inverse Compton-scattering of cosmic microwave background(CMB) photons by hot electrons in the intervening gas throughout the universe. The effect has a distinct spectral signature that allows its separation from other signals in multifrequency CMB datasets. Using CMB anisotropies measured at three frequencies by the BOOMERANG 2003 flight we constrain SZ fluctuations in the 10 arcmin to 1 deg angular range. Propagating errors and potential systematic effects through simulations, we obtain an overall upper limit of 15.3 μK (2sigma) for rms SZ fluctuations in a broad bin between multipoles of 250 and 1200 at the Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) end of the spectrum. The resulting upper limit on the local universe normalization of the density perturbations with BOOMERANG SZ data alone is sigma_sz_8 〈 1.14 at the 95% confidence level. When combined with other CMB anisotropy and SZ measurements, we find sigma_SZ_8 〈 0.92 (95% c.l.).

    Description: We study how heterogeneous rupture propagation affects the coherence of shear– and Rayleigh–Mach wave fronts radiated by supershear earthquakes. We address this question using numerical simulations of ruptures on a planar, vertical strike–slip fault embedded in a three–dimensional, homogeneous, linear elastic half–space. Ruptures propagate spontaneously in accordance with a linear slip–weakening friction law through both homogeneous and heterogeneous initial shear stress fields. In the 3–D homogeneous case, rupture fronts are curved due to interactions with the free surface and the finite fault width; however, this curvature does not greatly diminish the coherence of Mach fronts relative to cases in which the rupture front is constrained to be straight, as studied by Dunham and Bhat (2008). Introducing heterogeneity in the initial shear stress distribution causes ruptures to propagate at speeds that locally fluctuate above and below the shear–wave speed. Calculations of the Fourier amplitude spectra (FAS) of ground velocity time histories corroborate the kinematic results of Bizzarri and Spudich (2008): 1) The ground motion of a supershear rupture is richer in high frequency with respect to a subshear one. 2) When a Mach pulse is present, its high frequency content overwhelms that arising from stress heterogeneity. Present numerical experiments indicate that a Mach pulse causes approximately an –1.7 high frequency falloff in the FAS of ground displacement. Moreover, within the context of the employed representation of heterogeneities and over the range of parameter space that is accessible with current computational resources, our simulations suggest that while heterogeneities reduce peak ground velocity and diminish the coherence of the Mach fronts, ground motion at stations experiencing Mach pulses should be richer in high frequencies compared to stations without Mach pulses. In contrast to the foregoing theoretical results, we find no average elevation of 5%–damped absolute response spectral accelerations (SA) in the period band 0.05–0.4 s observed at stations that presumably experienced Mach pulses during the 1979 Imperial Valley, 1999 Kocaeli, and 2002 Denali Fault earthquakes compared to SA observed at non–Mach pulse stations in the same earthquakes. A 20% amplification of short period SA is seen only at a few of the Imperial Valley stations closest to the fault. This lack of elevated SA suggests that either Mach pulses in real earthquakes are even more incoherent that in our simulations, or that Mach pulses are vulnerable to attenuation through nonlinear soil response. In any case, this result might imply that current engineering models of high frequency earthquake ground motions do not need to be modified by more than 20% close to the fault to account for Mach pulses, provided that the existing data are adequately representative of ground motions from supershear earthquakes.

    Description: Near-field (NF) and far-field (FF) terms represent different properties of the wave-field: the near-source motions are more sensitive to the spatio-temporal details of the rupture process, while far-field terms carry the overall signature of a point-source. However, there is no clear distinction between far-field and near-field terms as their relative importance is frequency dependent. Due to their longer propagation path through complex Earth structure, the far-field wavefield is generally strongly affected by media properties and dominates at high frequencies. In contrast, the near-field terms have higher amplitudes at low frequency. In this study we compute full-wavefield near-field synthetics for a suite of earthquake scenarios, and compare those to corresponding finite-fault ray-theory seismograms that lack the near-field terms. This allows us to define the region around a fault in which NF-terms exert a strong influence on the radiated motions, and hence cannot be ignored. We analyze the simulations in terms of peak shaking levels (PGA, PGV, PGD) and response spectral values, but also consider the waveform characteristics in order to examine the engineering aspects of near-field and far-field components of the seismic wavefield.

    Description: During volcanic eruptions, volcanic ash transport and dispersion models (VATDs) are used to forecast the location and movement of ash clouds over hours to days in order to define hazards to aircraft and to communities downwind. Those models use input parameters, called “eruption source parameters”, such as plume height H, mass eruption rate Ṁ, duration D, and the mass fraction m63 of erupted debris finer than about 4 or 63 μm, which can remain in the cloud for many hours or days. Observational constraints on the value of such parameters are frequently unavailable in the first minutes or hours after an eruption is detected. Moreover, observed plume height may change during an eruption, requiring rapid assignment of new parameters. This paper reports on a group effort to improve the accuracy of source parameters used by VATDs in the early hours of an eruption. We do so by first compiling a list of eruptions for which these parameters are well constrained, and then using these data to review and update previously studied parameter relationships. We find that the existing scatter in plots of H versus Ṁ yields an uncertainty within the 50% confidence interval of plus or minus a factor of four in eruption rate for a given plume height. This scatter is not clearly attributable to biases in measurement techniques or to well-recognized processes such as elutriation from pyroclastic flows. Sparse data on total grain-size distribution suggest that the mass fraction of fine debris m63 could vary by nearly two orders of magnitude between small basaltic eruptions ( 0.01) and large silicic ones (〉 0.5). We classify eleven eruption types; four types each for different sizes of silicic and mafic eruptions; submarine eruptions; “brief” or Vulcanian eruptions; and eruptions that generate co-ignimbrite or co-pyroclastic flow plumes. For each eruption type we assign source parameters. We then assign a characteristic eruption type to each of the world's 1500 Holocene volcanoes. These eruption types and associated parameters can be used for ash-cloud modeling in the event of an eruption, when no observational constraints on these parameters are available.

    Description: Il bacino di Leonessa è una delle maggiori depressioni tettoniche intermontane dell’Appennino Centrale. A differenza delle altre depressioni, disposte in direzione appenninica con la faglia bordiera principale sul lato orientale, il bacino è orientato in senso WNW-ESE ed ha la faglia bordiera principale sul suo margine sud-occidentale. Questo studio ha permesso di ricostruire l’evoluzione quaternaria del bacino attraverso un approccio multimetodologico basato sull’integrazione dei dati provenienti dal rilevamento geologico e geomorfologico a scala di dettaglio (1:10.000), supportato dall’interpretazione di fotografie aeree, da analisi paleontologico-stratigrafiche, paleomagnetiche, palinologiche e mineralogico-petrografiche. I sedimenti affioranti all’interno della depressione sono stati distinti in sintemi. Quello stratigraficamente più basso è il Sintema di Villa Pulcini – Colle Montano, costituito da un alternanza di argille, argille torbose, marne e sabbie argillose di ambiente deposizionale da lacustre a piana alluvionale a canali intrecciati (braided plain), attribuibile alla parte alta del Pleistocene inferiore. Stratigraficamente superiore al Sintema di Villa Pulcini – Colle Montano, il Sintema di Leonessa è costituito da depositi di conoide alluvionale nel settore occidentale del bacino e da depositi lacustri nel settore orientale, ambedue contenenti, nella parte alta, intercalazioni di vulcaniti risedimentate. Il ritrovamento di un molare di Mammuthus (mammuthus) cfr.M. (M.) trogontherii (Pohlig) all’interno di depositi alluvionali e i risultati delle analisi paleomagnetiche e palinlogiche consentono di riferire al Pleistocene medio il sintema.I due sintemi precedenti sono coperti a tratti da sabbie e sabbie argillose rossastre (Sintema di Terzone), con spessore che raramente supera i 5 metri, ricche di elementi vulcanici rimaneggiati. I sintemi stratigraficamente più alti del bacino sono costituiti da tre ordini di terrazzi fluviali e da due ordini di conoide alluvionale denominati Sintema di Cerreto - Monte Tilia1, Sintema di Fosso della Ripa e Sintema di Villa Falcucci – Monte Tilia2. Questi sono probabilmente da riferirsi al Pleistocene superiore – Olocene. La definizione degli eventi erosivo-deposizionali che hanno contraddistinto l’evoluzione del paesaggio nel bacino di Leonessa costituisce un passo ulteriore verso un più preciso inquadramento temporale dell’attività tettonica distensiva, del sollevamento regionale e dei cambiamenti climatici che hanno portato all’attuale assetto geomorfologico dell’Appennino Centrale.

    Description: Questa ricerca, condotta nell’ambito del Progetto RELUIS – Linea 10, ha riguardato la messa a punto di un modello di rischio sismico per Sistemi Urbani con approccio multilivello, utilizzando l’analogia con le reti neuronali. Il primo passo è stata l’elaborazione del livello 0, basato su banche-dati, disponibili a livello nazionale, relative alla pericolosità sismica di base e locale (INGV) e a dati di censimento dei comuni italiani (ANCITEL 2001; ISTAT 2001) per la descrizione fisica e funzionale dei centri abitati/sistemi urbani analizzati. Per semplicità e per omogeneità tra i molti dati elaborati sono stati trascurati due aspetti rilevanti per il modello di rete neuronale, che intervengono invece ai livelli successivi, ovvero l’aspetto della “soglia” di perdita di capacità di una componente di sottosistema (sia per evoluzione che per connessione) e l’aspetto della “capacità iniziale” di una componente di sottosistema prima dell’evento sismico. La valutazione della perdita di capacità complessiva di un Sistema Urbano a livello 0 è stata quindi calcolata come l’insieme delle perdite di tutti i sistemi combinati tra loro (con opportuni pesi) e quindi con un valore complessivo.

    Description: We use the Dieterich (1994) physics-based approach to simulate the spatio- temporal evolution of seismicity caused by stress changes applied to an infinite population of nucleating patches modeled through a rate- and state- dependent friction law. According to this model, seismicity rate changes depend on the amplitude of stress perturbation, the physical constitutive properties of faults (represented by the parameter Aσ), the stressing rate and the background seismicity rate of the study area. In order to apply this model in a predictive manner, we need to understand the impact of physical model parameters and the correlations between them. Firstly we discuss different definitions of the reference seismicity rate and show their impact on the computed rate of earthquake production for the 1992 Landers earthquake sequence as a case study. Furthermore, we demonstrate that all model parameters are strongly correlated for physical and statistical reasons. We discuss this correlation emphasizing that the estimations of the background seismicity rate, stressing rate and Aσ are strongly correlated to reproduce the observed aftershock productivity. Our analytically derived relation demonstrates the impact of these model parameters on the Omori-like aftershock decay: the c- value and the productivity of the Omori law, implying a p-value smaller or equal to 1. Finally, we discuss an optimal strategy to constrain model parameters for near-real time forecasts.

    Description: On June 8, 2008 a Mw = 6.4 earthquake occurred in NW Peloponnese, western Greece. This event is the largest strike-slip earthquake to occur in western Greece during the past 25 years. No surface rupture was observed. Many rock falls, slides, and liquefaction features have been found as is typical for an earthquake of this size. Double-difference relocations of 370 aftershocks show a linear pattern of events and define a clear NE-SW striking mainshock fault plane. The hypocentrer was determined at 18 km depth beneath village Mihoi in SW Achaia. The 24-hr aftershock region extends approximately 30 km in length, and the width of the surface projection of the aftershocks ranges between 5–10 km. The depth of the aftershocks rarely exceeds 22 km. Analysis of high-rate GPS data showed that station RLS (Riolos) which is located 12.8 km N5 W of the epicenter was displaced co-seismically 7 mm to the North in agreement with right-lateral kinematics of the rupture. Static (Coulomb) stress transfer analysis indicates loading of faults near the towns of Patras (north) and Amaliada (south), respectively. The earthquake put more emphasis on the role of strike-slip in the deformation of western Greece also indicating that seismic strain is partitioned between strike-slip and normal-slip events due to obliquity of the Nubia (Africa) – Eurasia convergence.

    Description: No eruption, no caldera collapse, and no landslide can take place in a volcano unless its state of stress is suitable for the associated type of rock failure. The state of stress, in turn, results in deformation, and both stress and deformation depend on the mechanical properties of the rocks that constitute the volcano. Understanding stress and deformation in volcanoes is thus of fundamental importance for understanding unrest periods and for accurate forecasting volcano failure, such as may result in large-scale lateral and vertical collapses and eruptions.

    Description: Many regions in the world are affected by natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, floods, storms, landslides, etc., each of which can have devastating socio- economic impacts. Among these natural events, earthquakes, have been among the most recurrent and damaging hazards during last few decades, resulting in large numbers of casualties, and massive economic losses [30]. The problem of earthquake risk mitigation is faced using different approaches, depending upon the time scale being considered. Whilst over time scales of decades it is of utmost importance that land use regulations and building/ infrastructure codes are continuously updated and improved, for time scales of a few years, the main risk mitigation actions are at the level of information and education in order to increase individual and social community awareness about potentially damaging hazards. Over shorter time scales (months to hours), it would naturally be of great benefit to society as a whole if the capability to accurately predict the time, location and size of a potentially catastrophic natural event were available. However, due to the great complexity of the natural processes of concern, such predictions are currently not possible. On the other hand, on very short time scales (seconds to minutes), new strategies for earthquake risk mitigation are being conceived and are under development worldwide, based on real-time information about natural events that is provided by advanced monitoring infrastructures, denoted as “early warning systems”.

    Description: Here we report the preliminary results of GPS data inversions for coseismic and initial afterslip distributions of the Mw 6.3 2009 April 6 L’Aquila earthquake. Coseismic displacements of continuous and survey-style GPS sites, show that the earthquake ruptured a planar SW-dipping normal fault with ∼0.6 m average slip and an estimated moment of 3.9 × 1018 Nm. Geodetic data agree with the seismological and geological information pointing out the Paganica fault, as the causative structure of the main shock. The position of the hypocentre relative to the coseismic slip distribution supports the seismological evidence of southeastward rupture directivity. These results also point out that the main coseismic asperity probably ended downdip of the Paganica village at a depth of few kilometres in agreement with the small (1–10 cm) observed surface breaks. Time-dependent post-seismic displacements have been modelled with an exponential function. The average value of the estimated characteristic times for near-field sites in the hanging-wall of the fault is 23.9 ± 5.4 d. The comparison between coseismic slip and post-seismic displacements for the first 60 d after the main shock, shows that afterslip occurred at the edges of the main coseismic asperity with a maximum estimated slip of ∼25 cm and an equivalent seismic moment of 6.5 × 1017 Nm. The activation of the Paganica fault, spatially intermediate between the previously recognized main active fault systems, suggests that strain accumulation in the central Apennines may be simultaneously active on distinct parallel fault systems.

    Description: L’Italia e l’Indonesia hanno avviato nel 2005-2006 un progetto di cooperazione sulle tematiche della mitigazione del rischio vulcanico. Nell’ambito di questo progetto è stata individuata la zona ovest di Sumatra come area di intervento. In particolare è stato preso in considerazione il vulcanoMarapi. Questo vulcano ha avuto frequente attività eruttiva nelle ultime decine di anni. L’ultima eruzione si è verificata nel 2004. La sua attività, sebbene di moderata intensità, pone un problema di protezione civile, poiché dal 1980 ad oggi ha causato diversi feriti e alcune vittime tra i turisti che hanno visitato l’area craterica sommitale. Allo scopo di monitorare lo stato di attività del Marapi, nell’ambito del citato progetto è stata realizzata una rete sismica a larga banda composta da 4 stazioni e basata su sensori Guralp GMG-40T da 60s di periodo e su acquisitori di tipo GAIA2, prodotti presso l’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. La strumentazione è stata portata dall’Italia ed è stata installata da un gruppo di lavoro formato da italiani ed indonesiani. Oltre all’installazione della strumentazione in campagna è stato necessario allestire un vero e proprio Centro di Monitoraggio presso l’Osservatorio di Bukittinggi, in prossimità delle pendici nordoccidentali del vulcano, dotato di calcolatori per l’acquisizione, l’analisi dei dati e la loro archiviazione. Il sistema per ilmonitoraggio sismologico realizzato alMarapi costituisce un importante strumento di prevenzione del rischio associato all’attività di questo vulcano e sta permettendo di creare un ricco data set utile a caratterizzare la sismicità della struttura vulcanica e dell’area circostante. Da un’analisi preliminare dei dati registrati nel periodo 19/10/2006 - 24/11/2008 si evidenzia che il vulcanomanifesta una sismicità di tipo VT ed LP. Nell’ agosto 2007 sono stati inoltre registrati segnali probabilmente attribuibili a modesta attività esplosiva nell’area sommitale. Italy and Indonesia started a cooperation project in 2005-2006 to cover issues for the mitigation of volcanic risk. In this project, the west area of Sumatra was identified as the area for intervention. In particular, the Marapi volcano was considered. This volcano has shown frequent eruptive activity over recent decades, with the last eruption occurring in 2004. Although its activity is of moderate intensity, it creates a civil protection problem, because since 1980 it has resulted in several injuries and a number of deaths among the tourists who visit the summit crater area. To monitor the activity of Marapi volcano as part of this project, a broadband seismic network has been implemented that consists of four stations based on Guralp GMG 40T sensors with period of 60 s and on GAIA2 data-loggers, which are produced at the INGV. The instrumentation was brought from Italy and was installed by a working group comprising Italians and Indonesians. In addition to the instrumentation in the field, it was necessary to set up a monitoring centre in the Bukittinggi Observatory, which is near the north-western slopes of the Marapi volcano. This is equipped with computers for data acquisition, analysis and archiving. The system for seismological monitoring that has been realized atMarapi volcano is an important tool in the prevention of the risk associated with this volcano, and it is providing a rich dataset that will be of great use for the characterization of the seismicity of the Marapi volcanic structure and the surrounding area. A preliminary analysis of the data recorded during the period 19/10/2006 - 24/11/2008 evidences that the volcano shows VT and LP seismicity. In August 2007 were also recorded signals probably attributable to small explosive activity in the summit area.

    Description: We have here analysed two normal faults of the central Apennines, one that affects the south-western slopes of theMontagna dei Fiori–Montagna di Campli relief, and the other that is located along the south-western border of the Leonessa intermontane depression. Through this analysis, we aim to better understand the reliability of geomorphic features, such as the fresh exposure of fault planes along bedrock scarps as certain evidence of active faulting in the Apennines, and to define the Quaternary kinematic history of these tectonic structures. The experience gathered from these two case studies suggests that the so-called ‘geomorphic signature’ of recent fault activity must be supported by wider geomorphologic and geologic investigations, such as the identification of displaced deposits and landforms not older than the Late Pleistocene, and/or an accurate definition of the slope instabilities. Our observations indicate that the fault planes studied are exposed exclusively because of the occurrence of non-tectonic processes, i.e. differential erosion and gravitational phenomena that have affected the portions of the slopes that are located in the hanging wall sectors. The geological evidence we have collected indicates that the Montagna dei Fiori–Montagna di Campli fault was probably not active during the whole of theuaternary, while the tectonic activity of the Leonessa fault ceased (or strongly reduced) at least during the Late Pleistocene, and probably since the Middle Pleistocene. The present lack of activity of these tectonic structures suggests that the fault activation for high magnitude earthquakes that produce surface faulting is improbable (i.e.Mw5.5–6.0, with reference to the Apennines, according toMichetti et al. [Michetti, A.M., Brunamonte, F., Serva, L.,Vittori, E. (1996), Trench investigations of the 1915 Fucino earthquake fault scarps (Abruzzo, Central Italy):geological evidence of large historical events, J. Geoph. Res.,101, 5921–5936; Michetti, A.M., Ferreli, L., Esposito, E.,Porfido, S., Blumetti, A.M., Vittori, E., Serva, L., Roberts, G.P. (2000)]). If, according to the current view, the shifting of the intra-Apennine extension towards the Adriatic sectors is still active, the Montagna dei Fiori–Montagna di Campli fault might be involved in active extensional deformation in the future.

    Description: A multi-model set of atmospheric simulations forced by historical sea surface temperature (SST) or SSTs plus Greenhouse gases and aerosol forcing agents for the period of 1950–1999 is studied to identify and understand which components of the Asian–Australian monsoon (A–AM) variability are forced and reproducible. The analysis focuses on the summertime monsoon circulations, comparing model results against the observations. The priority of different components of the A–AM circulations in terms of reproducibility is evaluated. Among the subsystems of the wide A–AM, the South Asian monsoon and the Australian monsoon circulations are better reproduced than the others, indicating they are forced and well modeled. The primary driving mechanism comes from the tropical Pacific. The western North Pacific monsoon circulation is also forced and well modeled except with a slightly lower reproducibility due to its delayed response to the eastern tropical Pacific forcing. The simultaneous driving comes from the western Pacific surrounding the maritime continent region. The Indian monsoon circulation has a moderate reproducibility, partly due to its weakened connection to June–July–August SSTs in the equatorial eastern Pacific in recent decades. Among the A–AM subsystems, the East Asian summer monsoon has the lowest reproducibility and is poorly modeled. This is mainly due to the failure of specifying historical SST in capturing the zonal land-sea thermal contrast change across the East Asia. The prescribed tropical Indian Ocean SST changes partly reproduce the meridional wind change over East Asia in several models. For all the A–AM subsystem circulation indices, generally the MME is always the best except for the Indian monsoon and East Asian monsoon circulation indices.

    Description: The Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF) is a young basaltic field that lies beneath the urban area of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. Over the past 250,000 years the AVF has produced at least 49 basaltic centers; the last eruption was only 600 years ago. In recognition of the high risk associated with a possible future eruption in Auckland, the New Zealand government ran Exercise Ruaumoko in March 2008, a test of New Zealand’s nation-wide preparedness for responding to a major disaster resulting from a volcanic eruption in Auckland City. The exercise scenario was developed in secret, and covered the period of precursory activity up until the eruption. During Exercise Ruaumoko we adapted a recently developed statistical code for eruption forecasting, namely BET_EF (Bayesian Event Tree for Eruption Forecasting), to independently track the unrest evolution and to forecast the most likely onset time, location and style of the initial phase of the simulated eruption. The code was set up before the start of the exercise by entering reliable information on the past history of the AVF as well as the monitoring signals expected in the event of magmatic unrest and an impending eruption. The average probabilities calculated by BET_EF during Exercise Ruaumoko corresponded well to the probabilities subjectively (and independently) estimated by the advising scientists (differences of few percentage units), and provided a sound forecast of the timing (before the event, the eruption probability reached 90%) and location of the eruption. This application of BET_EF to a volcanic field that has experienced no historical activity and for which otherwise limited prior information is available shows its versatility and potential usefulness as a tool to aid decision-making for a wide range of volcano types. Our near real-time application of BET_EF during Exercise Ruaumoko highlighted its potential to clarify and possibly optimize decision-making procedures in a future AVF eruption crisis, and as a rational starting point for discussions in a scientific advisory group. It also stimulated valuable scientific discussion around how a future AVF eruption might progress, and highlighted areas of future volcanological research that would reduce epistemic uncertainties through the development of better input models.

    Description: Il 6 aprile 2009 (3.32 locali) un terremoto di Mw 6,3 ha colpito la regione Abruzzo (Italia centrale) producendo un enorme danno alla città de L'Aquila e ai paesi limitrofi causando circa 300 morti e 60.000 senza fissa dimora. A seguito di questo evento sismico, la struttura di Pronto Intervento dell’INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia), si è rapidamente attivata installando in area epicentrale due reti sismiche temporanee (Re.Mo.Tel. in real-time e Re.Mo. in stand-alone) ed il Centro Operativo Emergenza Sismica. In questo lavoro presentiamo come si e’ svolta la campagna sismica della Re.Mo., avente l’obiettivo di acquisire dati di alta qualità e dettaglio per studiare le sorgenti sismiche, l’evoluzione spazio temporale della sequenza e caratterizzare attraverso la microsismicita’ le strutture di faglia attivate ed le proprieta’ del mezzo circostante. Saranno descritte nel dettaglio l’installazione compiuta a poche ore dal mainshock, il suo sviluppo legato all’evoluzione della sequenza sismica, fino alla sua dismissione nel Marzo 2010.

    Description: Operational prediction of the marine environment is recognised as a fundamental research issue in Europe. We present a pre-operational implementation of a biogeochem- ical model for the pelagic waters of the Mediterranean Sea, developed within the framework of the MERSEA-IP Euro- pean project. The OPATM-BFM coupled model is the core of a fully automatic system that delivers weekly analyses and forecast maps for the Mediterranean Sea biogeochem- istry. The system has been working in its current configura- tion since April 2007 with successful execution of the fully automatic operational chain in 87% of the cases while in the remaining cases the runs were successfully accomplished af- ter operator intervention. A description of the system devel- oped and also a comparison of the model results with satel- lite data are presented, together with a measure of the model skill evaluated by means of seasonal target diagrams. Future studies will address the implementation of a data assimila- tion scheme for the biogeochemical compartment in order to increase the skill of the model’s performance.
