Description / Table of Contents: Investigations into the mass transfer from steel in a sodium circulation systemThe changes in the surface layer composition of two unstabilized austenitic steels, 1.4301 (X 5 CrNi 189) and 1.4919 (X 6 CrNiMo 1713) and of two stabilized austenitic steels, 1.4970 (X 10CrNiMo Ti 1515) and 1.4988 (X 8 CrNiMo VNb 1613) were investigated after 6000 h exposure to flowing sodium at different test positions. The test positions in the heating zone were at 570 °C and at 700 °C respectively in the cooling zone at 590 °C and at 500 °C respectively. The investigations were made by glow discharge optical and Auger electron spectroscopy. The results are in accordance with determined changes in weight of the samples and with results of metallographic and REM-investigations. They are discussed in respect to possible effects in the operation of a sodium cooled reactor.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion inhibitors 25(1) - The role of the cation in a neutral salt in the corrosion of iron in the presence of oxygenThe rate of uptake of oxygen, under standard conditions, in the corrosion of 500 mg DAB6 iron powder is dependent on the nature of the cation in a neutral salt (chloride). In the presence of alkali, quaternary ammonium, quaternary phosphonium and alkali-earth chlorides, the rate of oxygen uptake is comparable. With zinc, cadmium, nickel and cobalt chlorides a marked decrease in the oxygen uptake is observed between pH5 and pH7. This is probably due to a block in the cathodic area in the iron boundary layer through precipitation of the rather insoluble basic hydroxides of zinc, cadmium, nickel and cobalt.

Notes: The corrosion resistance of aluminium bronze may be considerably improved by additions of Si and Mn; 2% Si and 0.2% Mn yielded considerably increase of the corrosion resistance to hydrochlorid, sulfuric and phosphoric acids, sodium hydroxide and seawater. Addition of silicon alone improves the resistance to sodium chloride, too, not, however, the resistance to hydrochlorid acid. Addition of Mn has a synergistic effect; the amount of 0.2% used here has practically no influence on ultimate tensile strength, but ductility is decreased by both Si and Mn.

Notes: The corrosion behaviour of a binary Ni-15 Cr alloy and a ternary Ni-15 Cr'1 Zr alloy has been examined when exposed to a bioxidant O2:SO2 atmosphere at 850°C. The patterns of scaling exhibited by the two alloys, especially in the early stages of reaction, have been studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy and EDAX analysis. It has been established that the nucleation of Cr2 O3 on, and its subsequent growth over the sample surface was much more rapid with the ternary alloy than the binary material. Furthermore the steady-state scale formed on the ternary alloy was single-layered and contained no NiO, in contrast to the anticipated duplex-layered scale developed on the binary material. It is suggested that the pre-existing intermetallic network in the as-cast microstructure of the Ni-15 Cr-1 Zr alloy is a key factor in promoting the rapid formation of the thin protective layer of Cr2O3, free from NiO. These features are responsible for the reduced rate of corrosion of the Zr'bearing material, relative to that exhibited by the binary alloy. The observations are discussed in the light of the published literature concerning the effects of rare earth/reactive metal and inert oxide additions to chromia-forming alloy systems.

Notes: The dissolution rates of various types of magnetites are measured by a spectrophotometric technique allowing the determination of Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio as a function of time. Some tests are also performed on magnetite electrodes galvanically coupled to steel electrodes. The influence of copper on the dissolution rate of magnetite is evaluated and the effect due to the presence of organic corrosion inhibitors is determined.A circulating loop operating with some boiler tube electrodes was assembled in order to verify the possibility of monitoring the acid cleaning treatment by electrochemical measurements.Electrode potential-time curves, polarization curves and polarization resistance data are recorded; the calculated corrosion rates are compared to weight-loss data obtained in the same experimental conditions. From the overall results some conclusions are reached both on the dissolution process of magnetite and on the monitoring of the acid cleaning treatment.

Description / Table of Contents: Mößbauerspectroscopic studies of the corrosion of ironThe mößbauerspectroscopic phase analysis is applied for studying the surface corrosion of pure iron. The results concern the rate, the layer structure, and phase transformations during the corrosion under mild and humid conditions, and the sub-rusting below protecting coatings. The study of exposed samples yields informations about the influence of aggressive atmospheres and of climate factors. Some conclusions are given concerning the formation of the lowest corrosion layer and the subsequent phase transformations.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Korrosion von Stahl und Aluminium in Calciumchlorid/Ammoniak, Magnesiumchlorid/Methylamin und Magnesiumchlorid/Methylamin/DecanEs wurde die Korrosion der Werkstoffe St 37, StE 36, Al 99,5 und Al-Mg 3 durch die Stoffpaare Calciumchlorid/Ammoniak, Magnesiumchlorid/Methylamin und Magnesiumchlorid/Methylamin/Decan untersucht.
Notes: The corrosion of St 37, StE 36, Al 99,5 and Al-Mg 3 in the chemical pairs of substances calcium chloride/ammonia, magnesium chloride/methylamine and magnesium chloride/methylamine/decane was investigated. The corrosion tests were performed in autoclaves at room temperature to 180 °C. The nominal duration of the experiments was 1000 hours.Rod shaped fatigue specimens with polished surfaces served as test specimens; these were fatigue tested after the corrosion treatments. All materials tested were compatible with calcium chloride/ammonia under the experimental conditions employed.Steel and aluminium showed similar behaviour against magnesium chloride/methylamine and magnesiumchloride/methylamine/decane, respectively. At room temperature and 70°C to 80°C the corrosion of steel and aluminium was low (wall losses in the order of 1 m̈m/a). Corrosion increased with increasing temperature. The activation energy for the reaction, which determined the rate of weight loss in magnesium chloride/methylamine/decane, was AEst = 0, 60 ± 0,18 eV for steel, and AEAl = 1, 07 ± 0,07 eV for aluminium.A corrosion treatment on aluminum fatigue specimens after 1000-1500 hours at 110 °C caused a notable decrease in fatigue strength; no such behaviour was noted for steel, even when corroded at 170 °C.

Notes: This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the corrosion and electrochemical behavior, including cathodic hydrogen absorption, of titanium in acidic and alkaline sulfidic solutions. The effect of chloride and cyanide ions on the corrosion behaviour of titanium in sulfidic solutions was also studied. Titanium in acidic and alkaline sulfidic solutions exhibits a stable passive corrosion potential and negligible corrosion. Chloride and cyanide ions do not affect the corrosion behavior of titanium in sulfidic solutions. Cyanide ions under conditions of cathodic polarization tend to promote activation of titanium. Cathodic polarization at temperatures higher than 72 °C promotes hydrogen uptake in titanium and formation of titanium hydride. The rate of hydrogen uptake increases with decreasing pH and increasing temperature. Cyanide ions tend to promote the rate of hydrogen uptake, whereas chloride ions have essentially no effect.

Description / Table of Contents: Pilot experiments for pH-changes of the electrolyte in cracks of corroding steelspH-values and concentrations of metallic ions during anodic dissolution of pure iron, Fe 1 Cr, Fe 5 Cr, Fe 18 Cr 9 Ni in 3 TMKCl in a model of crevice in oxygen-free conditions have been studied. For pure iron pH-values less than 4.65 have not been recorded. For chromium steels it has been found that with increase of chromium ions concentration in crevice solution pH-value decrease to almost zero. This dependence cannot be explained by simple hydrolysis of chromium ions.

Notes: The apparent tensile fracture strains, at which cracking of α-Al2O3 scales formed on Fe-Cr-Al-Y alloys during oxidation in 1 atm oxygen at 1200 °C occur, have been determined by two methods at room temperature. The values are reproducible and depend on the oxidation time but are within the range 1.4% to 2.3%. These are significantly higher than other published values for thermally formed oxides. It has also been observed that an intermediate thermal cycle to room temperature during the oxidation period does not affect significantly the subsequently measured fracture strain. These relatively high values are discussed in terms of two tentative hypotheses, one relating to flaws in the oxide, the other to possible loss of cohesion of oxide which is too fine to be detected by the methods used.

Notes: A system using a vibratory probe oscillating in close proximity to a specimen surface was improved in order to study the effects of tensile stress on the initial stages of cavitation damage: the temperature distribution on the stationary specimen came within ± 0.3 °C, and the errors in the experimental results were able to be kept below ± 3%.A tensile stress applied on such ductile metallic materials as aluminum, iron (ferrite) and mild steel inhibits cavitation damage in the early stage: the incubation period was extended to a maximum of five times. However, the damage is accelerated in the stage affected with weight loss. An applied tensile stress on such brittle material as cast iron accelerates damage both in the incubation period and the following periods of damage. The mechanism of these favorable and unfavorable effects of tensile stress on cavitation damage has been discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Metallographic and electrochemical investigations into intercrystalline corrosion of AlMg 9,56 wrought alloyThe intercrystalline corrosion has been studied with a 50% cold worked AlMg9,56 wrought alloy in 1 N sodium chloride solution; the metal has been used in various heat treatment states. Electron transmission photographs were made of the grain boundary precipitates formed by heat treatment. The electrochemical behaviour was studied by potentiostatic and galvanostatic methods. The corrosion behaviour of a heterogeneous alloy having a high proportion of intermetallic AlMg ß-equilibrium phase was compared with the behaviour of heat treated specimens of the alloy. The current potential curve could be traced for the ß-equilibrium phase. Indications were found of two different rate controlling and potential dependent reactions for the dissolution of the ß-equilibrium phase and of the grain boundary precipitates of the heat treated wrought alloy. In the course of heat treatment two different typs of precipitates are found which show different corrosion behaviour. After a short time heat treatment the grain boundaries are covered with continuous precipitates of unknown composition. After extended precipitation coagulation takes place which results in isolated globulites of the intermetallic ß-equilibrium phase. Intercrystalline corrosion of the AlMg9,56 wrought alloy is thus consistently due to the selective corrosion of grain boundary precipitates.

Notes: Stress corrosion crack velocity and stress corrosion threshold stress intensity have been measured for 18Cr-10Ni-0,5Ti stainless steel in relation to environmental variations. These studies showed that both stage I and stage II growth rate dependence on K are influenced by environmental variations. The chemical composition of the solution being tested, the corrosion-active components concentration and temperature that influence corrosion kinetics, all influence SCC susceptibility through their effects on overall film stability and localisation of corrosion. The influence of environmental factors on protective film stability was suggested to be an explanation for different values of stress corrosion threshold stress intensity found for different test conditions.

Notes: The isothermal and thermal cycling oxidation behaviour of a directionally solidified Ni-Al-Cr3C2 eutectic alloy at temperatures from 800° to 1200 °C in flowing air have been investigated using several physical techniques. At all temperatures an initial, protective, external layer of α-Al2O3 develops on the alloy surface. However, this breaks down mechanically during thermal cycling, enabling a less protective Cr2O3-rich scale to form. The time of retention of the α-Al2O3 layer at temperature decreases with increasing temperature, failing after between 30 min and 2 h at 1100° and 1200 °C. However, if platinum metal is introduced into the hot zone at these temperatures, this period is increased to about 48 h.Following formation of the external Cr2O3 scale, internal oxide penetration into the alloy can be considerable, involving preferential oxide penetration down the alloy/carbide fibre interfaces. Thermal cycling does not influence markedly the oxidation behaviour, although it does result in formation of a greater quantity of nickel-rich oxide nodules on the scale surface following crack development in the Cr2O3-rich scale. This crack development is assisted by differential thermal contraction stresses.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations into the influence of the priming coat on galvanic couple formation and bubble formation susceptibility of steel coated with tar-epoxy coating in salt solutionsUnalloyed steel sheets with the surface conditions grit blasted, hot-dip and metal-spray galvanized, coated with 4 different primers have been top coated with coal tar-epoxy resin of 4 different thickness values. The specimens have been immersed in NaCl solutions for two years. Potential and coating resistance values as well as cell currents between the specimens and external steel electrodes have been measured. Finally the corrosion amount of the steel electrodes and of artificial holidays have been determined. The resistance values measured after 3-6 months are found essentially for the degree of corrosion protection. With decreasing resistance values the formation of blisters within the coating as well as the cell activity increase. Thus, steel at holidays and unprotected steel in contact with coated steel are anodically attacked. Excellent corrosion protection is given by coatings with coating thickness 〉 400 m̈m as well as with Zn-epoxy or Zn-ethyl silicate primers, whereas sodium silicate is unsuitable.

Notes: An investigation has been made of the effect which an increasing hydrostatic pressure may have on copper corrosion at different temperatures in sea water at pH 7.8.The tests were carried out at a pressure of 1, 50, 100, 200 and 300 atm at a temperature of 5 °, 10 ° and 20 °C.The pressure set in which the tests were effected was pressurized by an hydropneumatic pump and it was fitted not only with a work electrode, but also with two Pt and one Ag-AgCl reference electrodes for electrochemical tests. It was found that copper corrosion is always stimulated by a pressure rise and that the increased corrosion rate is accelerated by increasing temperatures. The maximum increase (71%) was obtained at T = 20 °C; D.O = 7.0 ppm and pH = 7.8 at a pressure of 150 atm.But at a temperature of approx. 5 °C, the maximum increase did not exceed 30% always at a pressure of 150 atm.The test findings also evidenced that at a temperature ≤ of 10 °C, the pressure rise did not affect the anodic process but only the cathodic reduction, whereas the anodic process too was significantly accelerated at 20 °C and the influence of the pressure was found to be more accentuated.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation into the hydrogen induced cracking corrosion.- Part 1: Cathodic hydrogen evolution and hydrogen permeation of unalloyed steelsFrom stationary and instationary polarization measurements no characteristic data of hydrogen absorption in media with/without promotors can be obtained. Permeation measurements provide that Volmer-Tafel mechanism is valid at low current densities. Diffusion constant and hydrogen concentration can be evaluated from permeation measurements. Due to hydrogen traps at inside defects and by electrochemical surface effects permeation values can deviate. With increasing degree of cold-rolling the diffusion constant decreases, whereas the hydrogen concentration increases leading to a maximum permeation rate at about 15% cold-rolling.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation into the hydrogen induced cracking corrosion - Part 2: Comparative investigations into hydrogen permeationCreep specimens of cold rolled pure iron with different strengths have been stressed in H2SO4 + As2O3 undercathodic polarisation. The critical stress level for stress corrosion cracking is proportional to the yield strength ranging about 60% ys. At higher stresses the life times decrease with increasing strengths. No correlation exists with permeation rate and hydrogen content, but with time lag. Low alloy steel types show similar relationships in the same and in H2S containing environments. Metallographic examinations show no relation between stress corrosion cracks and surface or inside blisters. SEM examinations show manyfold types of fracture surfaces without systematics.
REM-Untersuchungen zeigen mannigfaltige Bruchbilder ohne systematischen Zusammenhang.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the influence of zinc on the corrosion behavior of high strength steelsCorrosion and fracture behavior of hot dip galvanized high strength steels with and without damaging zinc layer was studied in deionized water, in tap water, and in saturated calcium hydroxide solution through which nitrogen, air, and carbon dioxide were bubbled separately. Hydrogen permeation measurements have been carried out for steel specimens which were cathodically polarized by means of the zinc layer. It has been observed that the hydrogen activity reached to a maximum of 1-2 in neutral solutions and 4-10 in saturated calcium hydroxide solution or in dilute acid solutions containing carbon dioxide, before decreasing to low values. The decrease of hydrogen activity is due to the formation of surface layers. Constant load tests by application of a load amounting to 100-110% yield strength caused no hydrogen induced brittle fracture within 300-400 h neither with nor without damaging zinc layer. At a constant strain rate of 5· 10-7/s only 8 mm cold drawn steel wires were found to be almost unsusceptible to hydrogen that was absorbed during the test. Under notched conditions, all the steels investigated showed macroscopic brittle fracture.

Notes: The variation of the critical pitting potential of a zincalloy was studied in aerated NaOH solutions as a function of the concentration of the aggressive ions, Cl-, Br- and I-. Curves with segmented nature were obtained when Epitting was plotted versus logarithm of the halogen ion concentrations. Initiation of pitting corrosion was discussed on the basis of formation of complex halo-compounds with the oxides/hydroxides that constitute the passive surface film.Addition of chromate, phosphate and carbonate ions to the halogen-containing solutions causes the shift of the critical pitting potential in the noble direction, accounting for increased resistance to pitting attack. Nitrite-ion additions contribute with the halogen ions in the destruction of the passive film. Sufficient concentrations of the carbonate ions cause complete inhibition of pitting corrosion.
