    Notizen: High electric fields are used for ion generation in gas field ion sources and liquid metal ion sources. With the preparation of stable microprotrusions on refractory metals, stably emitting gas field ion sources for hydrogen and helium ions with angular intensities of 35 and 20 μA sr−1, respectively, are available with a high chromatic angular intensity. Liquid metal ion sources can stably deliver a variety of ions with a source life in some cases over more than 1000 h. They are an essential element for pattern generation in the nanometer region and other focused ion beam applications.

    Notizen: A nonperturbing diagnostic tool which is capable of precisely measuring the position and charge distribution of charged-particle beams, including those from rf accelerators, is described. The diagnostic uses as a probe a low-energy (1–20 keV), μA-level electron beam, which is injected across the path of the primary beam to be diagnosed. The probe electrons are deflected as they pass near or through the primary beam, after which they are collected by a suitable detector. The deflection of the probe electrons depends on the position of the primary beam relative to the test beam as well as on the charge distribution of the primary beam. Consequently, by measuring the deflections, one can determine these primary beam parameters. Calculations which illustrate the capabilities of this technique are presented, and the design and performance of a prototype version of the diagnostic are described. The prototype results agree very well with the calculations, verifying the theory and demonstrating the fundamental soundness of the approach for measuring the position and charge distribution of a relativistic beam. Although the prototype has only been tested with relatively low-energy beams (〈500 keV), the extension to highly relativistic beams is straightforward and completely described by the theory. Based on these results, we have a very high degree of confidence that the diagnostic is fully capable of operating as predicted by the calculations.

    Notizen: One of the recent applications of ion sources is their use for ion beam assisted deposition of thin films and coatings. This method combines a coating technique such as evaporation or sputtering with bombardment with ions in the keV energy range. The required ions with defined energy, flux, and impact angle are delivered from an ion source. An apparatus for ion beam assisted evaporation with a duoplasmatron ion source is described. The features of the duoplasmatron with respect to application for ion beam assisted deposition such as beam shape, uniformity and intensity, ion-to-neutral ratio, and focused and defocused mode are discussed.

    Notizen: Addition of cesium vapor to H−/D− multicusp volume sources has been shown to result in significantly increased extracted ion current density accompanied by reduced electron current density. However, using a cesium oven, the initial introduction of Cs vapor causes high-voltage breakdowns that persist for extended periods. In the extreme case, source operation may no longer be possible without shutting down and thoroughly cleaning source components. If operation can be recovered, the increase in extracted ion current density persists for many days, usually until filament burn-out or other failure unrelated directly to Cs introduction. We have refined the procedure for Cs introduction to produce less catastrophic initial source operation and shorter recovery times to consistent operation. The new procedure has produced consistent H− currents of 35–42 mA at 30 keV. Higher currents, up to 64 mA, have been achieved for short periods soon after recovery. These data were obtained for a 6.4-mm-diam emission aperture using a modified Pierce geometry. In this paper, the new procedure for introduction of Cs will be described with the associated recovery characteristics. This paper will compare the emittance changes as a function of H− current, equivalent current, and plasma electrode bias. The behavior of the output over many days and shutdown-operation-shutdown cycles will also be described.

    Notizen: The change in electrical resistance during the chemical dissolution of one arm of a variable ratio potentiometric bridge under constant current conditions is shown to offer a high precision, high resolution method of determining depth and rate of etch in immersed alloy work pieces undergoing chemical milling. The method is stable and repeatable, displaying negligible interference or disturbances due to electrochemical or electrothermal e.m.f.'s. Solution shunt conductivity is shown to have no significant effect on measurement accuracy allowing the sacrificial test piece to directly resolve etch depths to better than 10−5 m (10 μm) with comparable measurement of etch depth in the work piece. The principle is reliable and permits rugged construction, making it ideal for an industrial environment.

    Notizen: In case of temperature measurement utilizing forward-biased pn junction, a polarization current is necessary because it is what indicates the pn diode into an operating mode. Simultaneously, with the diode into the operating mode, the polarization current heats the pn junction and impedes measurement. The usual solution to this problem is to reduce the current through the diode. If the current is passed through the diode only at the moment of measurement and for a single brief impulse, the average current, as well as the amount of heat given off to the pn junction, is drastically reduced. The described pulsed-diode thermometer has an average relative error (within 20–100 °C range) of ΔT/T=0.25%.

    Notizen: The combination of zone refining and electrotransport techniques is considered with the aim of obtaining an improved method for the growth and ultrapurification of metallic crystals. A complete ultrahigh vacuum crystal growth system using induction heated vertical float zoning with up to 400 A of electrotransport current simultaneously passing through the molten zone has been developed. Preliminary tests on nickel show that the two techniques are indeed compatible and the purification process is substantially enhanced by their combination.

    Notizen: We present a new implementation of charge pumping for rapid characterization of interface-trap parameters, especially geometric mean of electron and hole capture cross sections, in metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). With the help of an HP8116A (or equivalent) function generator operated in the voltage-controlled-oscillator mode, this method enables measurement of the charge pumping current as a function of frequency with one continuous sweep of the frequency. Data analysis can be performed on an HP4145B (or equivalent) parameter analyzer by defining user functions. The measurement setup can be readily assembled with standard instruments without the need of a computer. It allows fast measurements without compromising the accuracy. The improved measurement speed has led to new observations revealing the rapid change of the capture cross sections of the interface traps shortly after Fowler–Nordheim hot-carrier injection.

    Notizen: A high-speed emitter coupled logic system for fast averaging is described. This system may be used to extract signals from broadband background noise, while preserving harmonic content. Each captured waveform may consist of up to 1024 sample points, and up to 16 kilowaveforms may be accumulated in one cycle. A 20 kilowaveform per second averaging rate is achieved on signals in a 20-kHz to 10-MHz band. The system is used to process the intermediate frequency output of an electro-optic sampling probe in order to recover 14.4-GHz, nonsinusoidal, periodic waveforms from a GaAs integrated circuit.

    Notizen: A single mode GaAlAs semiconductor laser operating at around 830 nm has been locked in frequency to the center of an absorption line of molecular iodine vapor. A relative frequency stability of better than 10−9 was obtained for time periods longer than 1 s. This stabilization scheme increases the flexibility of wavelength selection. A method has been developed to estimate the stability when only one stabilized system is available.

    Notizen: To reduce the load on switching elements in the excitation circuit of excimer lasers, a new circuit has been developed to study the basic characteristics, where a saturable transformer is utilized in the magnetic pulse compressor. We have used a saturable transformer with a winding ratio of 1:4. The initial pulse of 8.5 kV, 2.0 kA, 3 μs was transferred to the output pulse of 34 kV, 8 kA, 109 ns, with an energy-transfer efficiency of 58%. Using a saturable inductor as a charging inductor, furthermore, we have succeeded in reduction of the prepulse of the output voltage and enhancement of the energy-transfer efficiency.

    Notizen: When scanning steeply sloped features which are near micron size or taller, scanning tunneling microscopes with conventional feedback control loops exhibit slower response on downhill slopes than on uphill slopes. This effect is caused by the exponential dependence of the tunneling current on the tip-sample distance. A gap smaller than the setpoint produces a sizable error signal, whereas a gap larger than the setpoint gives only a weak error signal. As the scan rate is increased, the tip begins "flying'' well above the surface on steep downhill regions. We have developed a modification of the conventional integral feedback system which eliminates this problem. This circuit makes the error signal growth with increasing distance between the tip and sample similar to the usual exponential growth when the tip-sample distance decreases. This modification allows an increase in scan rates by a factor of 5–10 with no reduction in image quality. The modification can be dialed in or out of circuit as needed, such as when switching between large scale images and atomic scale images, and can easily be installed in any existing scanning tunneling microscope that uses an analog feedback circuit.

    Notizen: An automatic system has been completed for conditioning cold field-emission tips to obtain high flux density and low-noise emission. It was designed as a real-time control and operating system for the electron source of a new sextupole-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope and is able to condition the tip in situ. All of the control devices in this system are interfaced to a computer and communication across the electric field created by the 200-kV acceleration voltage is accomplished with light pipes. A program, written in Pascal, controls the conditioning process. This system has been utilized to experimentally determine the optimal flash level for a newly fabricated tip as well as performing corrective maintenance to the conditioned tip to extend its maximum useful lifetime.

    Notizen: A scanning probe microscope has been integrated into a microwave resonator tunable from 2.2 to 3.4 GHz with a quality factor Q larger than 1000. Nonlinear phenomena caused generation of higher harmonics when rf fields in the range of 109 V/m were applied between tip and sample. Higher harmonic signals were detected at a bandwidth of 10 kHz on conductor surfaces as well as on thin insulating films and were used as feedback to the control loop for imaging graphite surface features and oxidized silicon surfaces with subnanometer resolution.

    Notizen: A computerized setup for optical polarization measurements is described. The heart of this setup is a photoelastic modulator (PEM) whose retardation phase can be kept constant when the wavelength of modulated light is scanned in a wide range, and a dual-channel gated photon counter which has the capability of compensating the variation of excitation intensity with time and wavelength. Unlike conventional analog setups, where the difference of two perpendicularly polarized light components (I+ − I−) and the average of these components 1/2(I+ + I−) are extracted electronically and the ratio 2(I+ − I−)/(I+ + I−) is recorded as degree of polarization, this spectropolarimeter directly records the I+ and I− components (for circular polarization) or I(parallel) and I⊥ components (for linear polarization) of the analyzed light signal. Once the spectra of the two components are stored as a numerical file in the computer, they can be processed to extract the degree of polarization as a function of wavelength, temperature, etc. The curvature and asymmetry of the modulator response are taken into account exactly in data processing. The spectropolarimeter has proved to be very accurate due to the capability of compensating the fluctuation in excitation source and of electronically tracking the modulation wavelength.

    Notizen: A 10-GHz superconducting niobium re-entrant cavity parametric transducer was developed for use in a cryogenic 1.5-tonne Nb resonant bar gravitational radiation antenna. The transducer has a very high electrical Q (6×105 at 4.2 K), and was operated at high cavity fields without degrading the Q. A very high electromechanical coupling between the antenna and the transducer was therefore achieved. The highest coupling attained, constrained by the available pump power, was 0.11. If the transducer were to be operated in conjunction with a wideband impedance matching element, an antenna bandwidth comparable to the frequency of the antenna would be attained. The temperature dependence of the Q of the transducer was in good agreement with theory. At temperatures above about 6 K the Q was degraded by the increase in the BCS surface resistance, while at lower temperatures the Q was limited by radiative losses.

    Notizen: We examine the causes of spacing dependence of the nulling bias voltage in the vibrating capacitor contact potential measurement technique. In addition to effects already recognized in the literature, namely, nonuniform work functions, nonparallel surfaces, fringe fields, and capacitive coupling to distant surfaces, we investigate the effects of finite gain and spurious signals in feedback loop systems. We argue that much of the spacing dependence reported in the literature may be due to microphonic signals, which are very difficult to eliminate. We also discuss the means by which existing spacing dependence can be minimized.

    Notizen: A novel version of the capillary method for viscosity measurements of liquids is presented. Viscosity data can be deduced in a straightforward way from mass transfer data obtained by differential weighing during the gravity-induced flow of the liquid between two cylindrical chambers. Tests of this technique with water, carbon tetrachloride, and ethanol suggest that this arrangement provides an accuracy of about ±1%. The technique facilitates operation under sealed, isothermal conditions and, thus can readily be applied to reactive and/or high vapor pressure liquids.

    Notizen: 6-in.-diam multilayer mirrors were fabricated for a double mirror monochromator designed to select photon energies between 830 and 1240 eV (0.5–1.5 nm). Coatings with 50 and 40 Mo/C bilayers with a bilayer d spacing of 4.1 and 4.6 nm, respectively, and a division parameter of Γ=0.44, were deposited by the triode sputtering method on 6-in.-diam silicon with 5% d uniformity. Similar coatings were also deposited on 2 in. silicon wafers. Peak reflectivity and integrated reflectivities were measured at several wavelengths between 0.5 and 1.5 nm using monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Measurements were performed along a 4 in. diameter for the large area coatings. The resolving power as measured in the center of the six inch mirrors was found to be 41 and 46 at 826 and 1240 eV, respectively, which compares well with the corresponding theoretical values of 43 and 40. The performance of a matched pair of multilayer mirrors with the smaller areas in the double mirror configuration was experimentally investigated as well. Reflectivity values for the two mirror configuration scheme were calculated from the experimental data for the individual mirrors. Possible applications of such monochromator in lithography research are briefly described.

    Notizen: The transfer matrix up to the second-order aberrations has been formulated for an electron optical systems of a monochromator and an energy analyzer. Both of these instruments have two magnetic round lenses and a retarding Wien filter. The filter consists of a deceleration lens, a Wien filter, and an acceleration lens. The optimum excitation of the round lens is found to be that which provides parallel exit of electrons from the acceleration lens. The excitation of the Wien filter must be adjusted to focus the beam on the slit. The computed results are useful for finding the optimum operating conditions and for explaining experimental results of the high-resolution electron energy loss spectrometer.

    Notizen: A high-flux atomic oxygen source has been developed for the deposition of in situ superconducting high Tc films under conditions that require low chamber pressures (≤10−4 Torr). The source uses a remote microwave plasma to generate the atomic species and is capable of producing an atomic oxygen flux greater than 2×1016 cm−2 s−1. The O2 dissociation efficiency of the atomic oxygen source is measured to be approximately 25%–30% for an O2 flow of 5 sccm. This high efficiency is achieved by the combined effects of a boric acid surface treatment to minimize recombination on the quartz tube and the addition of N2 to the oxygen plasma to increase the atomic oxygen yield. We have developed a treatment for the quartz surface that gives reproducible atomic oxygen flux with no degradation of the surface coating with repeated usage.

    Notizen: An ultrahigh vacuum chamber has been developed for structural analysis of adsorbed films and single-crystal surfaces using synchrotron x-ray diffraction. It is particularly well suited for investigations of physisorbed and other weakly bound films. The chamber is small enough to transport and mount directly on a standard four-axis diffractometer and can also be used independently of the x-ray diffractometer. A low-current, pulse-counting, low-energy electron diffraction/Auger spectroscopy system with a position-sensitive detector enables in situ characterization of the film and substrate while the sample is located at the x-ray scattering position. A closed-cycle He refrigerator and electron bombardment heater provide controlled substrate temperatures from 30 to 1300 K. The chamber is also equipped with an ion sputter gun, a quadrupole mass spectrometer, and a gas handling system. Details of the design and operation of the instrument are described. To demonstrate the performance of the instrument, we present some preliminary results of a study of Xe physisorbed on the Ag(111) surface.

    Notizen: A compact interferometer using a grating beamsplitter is reported. The phase of the interference signal was adjusted by using the moire effect of the gratings, so that a small optical path difference was compensated precisely by the magnified displacement of the grating. The optical system was analyzed theoretically on the basis of the Fourier optics. For the interferometric measurement in the microscopic region, a compact optical system was assembled from the microscopic objective and the 25-μm gratings. The characteristics of the proposed interferometer were investigated in the measurements of film thickness, piezoelectric vibration, and photoacoustic effect.

    Notizen: We developed a system for localizing orthogonal triplets of small magnetic dipoles with an array of magnetometers. These triplets can be used to measure, in quasi-real time, the position of an object. This system is particularly useful when used with superconducting biomagnetic multichannel detectors. We present here a complete numerical simulation of the system performances and the first experimental tests with a biomagnetic detector (an array of 37 superconducting magnetometers). This system can be operated at frequencies outside the range of interest for biomagnetic measurements (that is typically 10−2–103 Hz). It features an accuracy of ±0.3 cm driving the triplet at a field intensity ≈10−12 T. The speed of the algorithm allows for quasi-real-time operation (t ∼ 10−1 s).

    Notizen: In this article we discuss how pseudorandom sequences are generated for use in cross-correlation modulation experiments and present means for generating all pseudorandom sequences (modulo-two) that have a maximum length of N=2n−1, with n=2–12. We explain the criteria that the pseudorandom sequences must satisfy, and find the set of recursion coefficients which are used to generate the pseudorandom sequences. These sets of recursion coefficients were calculated for n=2–16, with n=2–12 being explicitly presented in this article. We also explain how each set of recursion coefficients can be used to generate maximum length pseudorandom sequences of length sufficient for use in cross-correlation chopping.

    Notizen: Interferometric thermometry is a promising noncontact technique for measuring the temperature of transparent substrates (with polished front and back surfaces) from thermally induced changes in sample thickness and refractive index. However, for substrates of uniform thickness, the technique is not sensitive to the direction of temperature change, thus restricting its use to situations in which the temperature variation is monotonic. In this paper, we present some new schemes for interferometric thermometry based on the wavelength modulation capabilities of the distributed feedback laser diode. These schemes allow both the magnitude and direction of temperature change to be determined. One scheme utilized to measure temperature changes in a silicon wafer during thermal cycling is described in detail. In addition, the calibration factors required to convert the thermally induced reflectance oscillations ("fringes'') of known-thickness samples into temperature change are provided for Si and GaAs at wavelengths near 1.5 μm.

    Notizen: This article describes systems in which the precession of a single particle spin is magnetically coupled to the excitation of an oscillator. The behavior of such systems resembles that of a "folded'' Stern–Gerlach experiment, in which the linear spatial trajectory of the original Stern–Gerlach experiment is folded into the cyclic trajectory of an oscillator. Both quantum and semiclassical solutions to the equations of motion are derived. The results encompass any kind of oscillator which couples to a magnetic field. Examples include mechanical cantilevers with a magnetic source affixed to them, as well as inductor-capacitor resonant circuits. One potential application of oscillator-coupled magnetic resonance is the imaging of biological molecules. Some design issues relevant to molecular imaging are discussed.

    Notizen: A piezoelectric inertial stepping motor for multiple rotations of small optical or mechanical components has been developed. The spherical rotor can be rotated about two or three orthogonal axes. Angular step resolution of 1 arcsec is achieved and the maximum speed lies in the range of degrees per second. The design is compact and eliminates mechanical backlash. Simple electronic control is achieved with only one wire per rotational axis. Low-voltage signals between 15 and 30 V are sufficient for driving the motor. No voltage is necessary for maintaining the rotor in a static position. A first application is described with laser optics as they are used in the detector of a scanning force microscope, offering the advantage of remote controlled adjustment.

    Notizen: Gundestrup is a Langmuir/Mach probe array which measures the flow velocity in the scrape-off layer of Tokamak de Varennes (TdeV). It is based on the concept of a Mach probe where presheaths extending upstream and downstream from the probe, parallel to the magnetic field, attract charge to a circular array of collecting pins. The polar distribution of ion saturation currents to the circular array is used to compute the components of flow velocity in the plasma. With Gundestrup, there is an assumed flow perpendicular to the magnetic field as well as parallel to it. Equations representing the collection of charge by individual pins on the probe are presented and sample flow patterns from the scrape-off layer are shown.

    Notizen: Impressed by the high resolution and easy operation of the new generation scanning tunneling microscopes (STMs), we built a pocket-size high-stability atomic force microscope (AFM) with deflection measurement by tunneling. It was our aim to reach high mechanical and thermal stability of the tunnel junction as well as full compatibility with our existing STM system. Our first AFM scanhead, designed for large scan ranges up to 15 μm, stably measured an artificial grid structure on SiO2, reproducibly showing details of less than 1 nm in size. On this well-defined sample we compared constant force with variable deflection measurements.

    Notizen: Characteristics of an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) stepping motor have been examined for practical use. The temperature rise of the motor in the energized-and-rest condition was measured as a function of the coil current. The result showed that it is approximately proportional to the electric power fed to the coil. The outgassing from the motor increased significantly at temperatures above 100 °C. The components of the released gas were the usual species in vacuum such as H2, H2O, CO, CO2, and hydrocarbons. Initially a small amount of NH3 was also observed at temperatures higher than 150 °C. This gas might originate from a small amount of the epoxy resin used for bonding the rotor and the permanent magnets. It decreased rapidly during the test operation. In the running mode, the outgassing of H2, CH4, H2O, CO, and CO2 increased with the revolution rate. The amount of the H2 released from the motor with the silver-ion plated ball bearings was larger than that with the MoS2 coated ball bearings. The lifetime of the MoS2-coated ball bearings was longer than that of the Ag ion plated ones.

Methyl radicals are produced through azomethane pyrolysis in a tubular reactor located inside an ultrahigh vacuum chamber.     Notizen: A high-resolution, high-sensitivity, automated ac calorimeter capable of heat capacity measurements on very small samples (m〈20 mg) with a temperature resolution of a few mK in the ac mode is described. This calorimeter also can be operated in the relaxation mode to provide absolute heat capacity values with precision and accuracy of around 2%. A microprocessor was employed to generate a stable oscillatory heating signal and to control the heater power, in order to improve the sensitivity of the measurement over other designs. A new very sensitive and miniature temperature probe (a film flake of a thermistor material), which increased measurement resolution and minimized the heat contribution of the addenda, also was used. This calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat capacity of gadolinium over its ferromagnetic phase transition. The results agree well with the literature data giving, however, substantially better resolution of the heat capacity in the critical region.

    Notizen: The transient hot-strip (THS) method has been modified to measure thermal conductivity of small test specimens. The conventional metal strip used simultaneously as the heater and the temperature sensor was substituted with a 50-Ω commercial temperature sensor (grid 5.85 mm×6.35 mm). The short transient hot-strip (STHS) method was tested on Pyrex 7740, stainless steel (NIST 1462 standard reference material), and aluminum to cover more than two orders of magnitude in thermal conductivity. The STHS method agreed with conventional measurement techniques within 3% in the thermal conductivity range 1–200 W m−1 K−1.

    Notizen: A method to measure the absolute intensity of a weak magnetic field is described. This method uses patterned superconducting strip lines as a spatial modulator of the field and detects the magnetic field distribution over them as a function of applied magnetic fields. The field distribution change measured by an rf SQUID system is proportional to the component of the absolute intensity of the magnetic field at the specimen that is parallel with the pick-up coil axis. The magnetic field intensity can be determined absolutely from about 1 μG by this method. A spatial resolution of the field as good as a few millimeters is obtained. Some practical limitations of this method and possible ways for improving are also discussed.

    Notizen: A specialized ion source for use in the high voltage terminal of an electrostatic accelerator has been developed to produce vibrationally cold beams of molecular ions. A pulsed valve is used to produce a supersonic expansion of the source gas which is ionized by electron impact near the beginning of the free expansion. Because of the harsh electromagnetic environment in the terminal, special care has been taken to protect the electronic components related to the ion source. The effect of vibrational cooling in the supersonic expansion is demonstrated using Coulomb explosion techniques with a He2+ beam.

The accessible q range of the instrument is from 3.75×10−4 to 3.0×10−3 nm−1 (2.2°–17.4° scattering angle, with λ=632.8 nm). The rheometer utilizes a cone and plate geometry to generate the shear gradient and is capable of measuring torque (1.8 N m maximum) and normal forces (50 N maximum). An 8% solution of a 50:50 polystyrene/polybutadiene blend in dioctyl phthalate was used to test the apparatus. This sample shows a shear-induced mixing behavior which is consistent with previous measurements by other investigators.

    Notizen: We have developed a staring-mode, high-speed infrared camera based on a RCA 160×244 PtSi Schottky-barrier charge-coupled device image sensor. The camera uses a unique method to achieve greater temporal resolution of rapidly varying thermal phenomena in the 3–5 μm band. Rather than increase the imager's frame rate, we decrease the image integration time while maintaining a frame rate that is compatible with standard RS-170 video. This technique allows us to display and record repetitive events that occur at frequencies up to 5 kHz with conventional video equipment. In this article we describe the theory and operation of this system.

    Notizen: A new hairpin resonator efficiently couples to nuclear spins in diamond anvil cell–nuclear magnetic resonance (DAC–NMR) experiments. The hairpin resonator is essentially a single turn coil of copper sheet, resonated with a chip capacitor. A modest tuning range is provided by trimmer capacitors. This resonator has so far been the most satisfactory of the DAC–NMR schemes tried in our laboratory. It is easy to make, robust, and reusable, and is easily cleaned to eliminate contaminant signals. The H1 homogeneity is good; the rf performance is described.

    Notizen: A collective laser light scattering diagnostic ALTAIR (a french acronym for local analysis of anomalous transport using infrared light), using a CO2 laser beam (λ=10.6 μm) has been realized to measure plasma density fluctuations in the TORE SUPRA tokamak. This article describes in detail the optical setup, the signal processing, acquisition, and control systems required for this experiment. As the density fluctuations propagating in tokamaks have small wave numbers and require small scattering angles, such scattering experiments are considered as having no resolution along the beam. However, taking advantage of the pitch angle variation of the magnetic field lines around the magnetic axis along a vertical chord, it has been possible to obtain partial spatial localization of the scattering volume by rotating the direction of the analyzed wave vector in a horizontal plane. Heterodyne detection is used to determine the fluctuations propagation direction. The experiment has been tested on acoustic waves and the first results obtained on TORE SUPRA indeed show the existence of a spatial resolution.

    Notizen: We discuss the principles required to determine the electric field outside a metallic conductor created by strain gradients in the metal as might be engendered by the Earth's gravity. The experiment we describe measured the contact potential variation between a mechanically differentially strained metal surface and an unstrained capacitive sensing probe. The results are of considerable importance for the investigation of the free fall of charged particles inside vertical conducting drift tubes. Our aim here is to elucidate the large sources of error associated with the application of strain. These include motions of the sample and temperature variations. The solutions we have developed may find application in similar experiments.

    Notizen: The design and construction of an apparatus for the application of compressive uniaxial stress is described. In contrast to older machines a hydraulic force transmission is used allowing for a very compact and lightweight sample holder/stress unit. The less bulky machine allows more accurate alignment of the stressed sample in an optical experiment. The large force the machine can exert facilitates the use of samples with a large cross section such as those desirable for ellipsometric measurements. A low budget version of the machine, based on motorbike components, is suggested. The machine is used in conjuction with a rotating analyzer ellipsometer to measure the dielectric function under uniaxial stress. From these data we are able to extract the components of the piezo-optical tensor. We demonstrate this for the case of germanium.

    Notizen: By using conformal transformation to take account of the boundary effect, it has been confirmed that there are some areas of a square sample near the corners besides the boundary suitable to the resistance measurement of Van der Pauw's method. The theoretical criterion of the suitability is whether Van der Pauw's formula for calculation of the sheet resistance is still valid provided the voltage values in the formula for two times the measurement are substituted with those obtained by using the theory of conformal transformation. The experimental criterion is whether the experimental values of sheet resistance for probes in some areas are equal to that for them at the boundary for the same sample. The experimentally confirmed areas are larger than what the theory predicts. Our repeated experiments show that the areas out of the circle tangent to the boundary are suitable to Van der Pauw's method.

    Notizen: A personal computer based hardware has been developed for the real time, rapid digitization of echo amplitudes and times-of-flight of ultrasonic pulses produced by existing analog ultrasonic borehole imaging systems. Both amplitude and travel-time B-scan images are mapped circumferentially around the wellbore wall with reference to magnetic north. 12-bit analog to digital conversion of pulse amplitudes provides a resolution of approximately 1 mV out of a peak amplitude voltage of 1 V; travel times are determined to within 100 ns to a maximum time of 512 μs after which it is assumed that no signal will be detected. This information provides high-resolution digital images of the borehole wall and cross section which are useful for delineation of open fractures, discrimination of complex cross sections, and calculation of wellbore volumes.

    Notizen: This article deals with a new pressure sensing method by use of magnetic fluids. In a magnetic fluid placed in a magnetic field, fluid-magnetic pressure appears, which is a function of magnetic field. When a differential pressure is applied to the ends of such a magnetic fluid plug, and the differential pressure is in equilibrium with the fluid-magnetic pressure so that the plug cannot move, then the magnitude of the magnetic field maintaining the fluid-magnetic pressure becomes a measure of the differential pressure. We made a small setup and measured differential pressures up to about 100 Pa by measuring the coil current of an electromagnet.

    Notizen: Active control of beam trajectories using four sets of sweep plates is proposed for a heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) system on helical plasma, such as torsatron, stellarator, etc., in order to solve problems arising from the complicated beam trajectories in its nonaxisymmetrical magnetic field. By this method, a series of the probing beam trajectories giving a whole potential distribution can be managed to pass at a particular point (detector aperture) with the same angle. An equation is introduced as a guiding principle to simplify the optimization process of geometrical configuration of the HIBP system, which will be adjusted for different magnetic configurations by only changing the sweep plate voltages.

    Notizen: A technique is described whereby the ion dumps inside the TFTR Neutral Beam Test Stand were used to measure thermal profiles of the full-, half-, and third-energy ions. 136 thermocouples were installed on the full-energy ion dump, allowing full beam contours. Additional linear arrays across the widths of the half- and third-energy ion dumps provided a measure of the shape, in the direction parallel to the grid rails, of the half- and third-energy ions, and, hence, of the molecular ions extracted from the source. As a result of these measurements, it was found that the magnet was more weakly focusing, by a factor of 2, than expected, explaining past overheating of the full-energy ion dump. Hollow profiles on the half- and third-energy ion dumps were observed, suggesting that extraction of D+2 and D+3 is primarily from the edge of the ion source. If extraction of half-energy ions is from the edge of the accelerator, a divergence parallel to the grid rails of 0.6°±0.1° is deduced. It is postulated that a nonuniform gas profile near the accelerator is the cause of the hollow partial-energy ion profiles, the pressure being depressed over the accelerator by particles passing through this highly transparent structure. Primary electrons reaching the accelerator produce nonuniform densities of D+2 through the ionization of this gas. D+3 is created through subsequent D+2-gas collisions. A technique of rastering the ion beam across the full-energy dump was examined as a means of reducing the power density. By unbalancing the currents in the two coils of the magnet, on a shot-by-shot basis, by up to a 2:1 ratio, it was possible to move the centerline of the full-energy ion beam sideways by ∼12.5 cm. The adoption of such a technique, with a ramp of the coil imbalance from 2:1 to 1:2 over a beam pulse, could reduce the full-energy ion dump power density by a factor of (approximately-greater-than)1.5.

    Notizen: The factors governing the choice of preamplifier type for the vibrating capacitive probe used in contact potential measurements are examined. Two types are compared: a high input impedance voltage amplifier and a current amplifier. The latter has been increasingly used in recent years due to its great advantages in dealing with parasitic input capacitance. We extend previous analyses, elucidating other advantages of the current amplifier. Particularly important are (i) the reduction of spurious microphonic signals, implying lower systematic error, and (ii) the white noise spectrum of its equivalent contact potential noise, which allows random error to be effectively reduced by increased averaging periods.

    Notizen: We have constructed a silicon photodiode detector for use with a glancing-emergence-angle (GEA) geometry useful for obtaining fluorescence EXAFS spectra from thick specimens with concentrated absorbing species. We present a description of the detector and the results of tests, including dark-noise tests, EXAFS spectra from a standard sample, and a comparison to an ion chamber also in the GEA configuration. Data obtained from the two detectors are comparable in quality, making the diode detector a preferable choice for this application due to factors such as simplicity of construction and compact size. The diodes also have potential for significant further improvement in the quality of the signal due to their high quantum efficiency if the dark noise can be reduced. We present suggestions for achieving this in future generations of the detector.

    Notizen: A double-walled submersible sea surface film sampler which "cuts out'' an undisturbed film-covered area has been built for force-area isotherm studies of untreated water samples. Preliminary results on static and dynamic surface properties of naturally formed films present in coastal zones of the Baltic Sea are presented and discussed in reference to water samples collected in a bottle (depth of 20 cm) at the same site and time, which in turn significantly differ from each other. The new sampler also allows a few statements of oceanographic relevance on the film homogeneity (i.e., film filling factor) and the energy transfer through surface films from isotherm hysteresis measurements.

    Notizen: The homogeneity of a bulk YBa2Cu3Ox sample prepared by standard methods has been determined. Measurements of the conductivity, Tc (by induction), and x-ray analysis showed no deviation from bulk material previously characterized as "homogeneous'' in the literature; the sample was shown to be inhomogeneous by the eddy current method. We use the sample's response to multifrequency eddy current probing as a measure of homogeneity. This response is calculated from measurements of the complex impedance of a coil, which contains the sample, as a function of frequency. The homogeneity of the sample after being quenched in air from three successively higher temperatures (650, 700, 800 °C) has also been determined. A rough conductivity profile in one dimension is obtained for all four sample conditions.

    Notizen: A system has been designed for the characterizing of both low and high Tc junctions and devices. Fully automated measurements of resistance versus temperature, current versus voltage, and critical current versus applied field can be carried out on up to eight devices in one cooldown cycle. The system has been proven to reduce the repetitive nature and time involved in characterizing many junctions and devices, and greatly speeds up the analysis of changes in their parameters. Connections are made to the sample using spring contacts which eliminate the need for soldering to contact pads. One or two substrates with ten connections per substrate can be placed in the probe at the one time. A microcomputer with an IEEE488 interface, four standard instruments (two constant current sources, one digital multimeter, and one voltmeter), and a specially designed probe and software has been incorporated to provide a system which is very flexible and yet very simple to operate.

    Notizen: An extremely rapid heating and quenching instrument for thin-film materials was prepared, which established a quenching speed of 1011 K/s for a 20-nm GeSbTe film. It contains a thin-film device part and a laser diode/electro-optical section; the former is composed of the thin film which absorbs 830-nm laser light sandwiched between a transparent and highly heat-conductive ZnS-SiO2 mixture layer. It is designed to produce a high-temperature gradient between the two layers at the moment of laser exposure. In the latter, the laser beam is designed to be automatically focused with a half-value width of 1 μm at the thin-film surface to be heated. The beam exposure condition is variable: the pulse width 10 ns–10 μs, and the beam power amplitude, 0.5–30 mW. The reflectivity of the beam exposure part can be monitored in situ during the exposure as well as before and after the exposure using the same laser diode.

    Notizen: A robust method that uses eddy current measurements to determine the conductivity and thickness of uniform conductive layers is described. The method was tested by estimating the conductivity and thickness of aluminum and copper layers on various substrate metals, and the thickness and conductivity of free-standing foils of aluminum. The electrical impedance was measured for air-core and ferrite-core coils in the presence and absence of the layer for frequencies ranging from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. The thickness and conductivity of the metal layers were inferred by comparing the data taken with air-core coils to the exact theoretical solution of Dodd and Deeds [J. Appl. Phys. 39, 2829 (1968)] using a least-squares norm. The inferences were absolute in the sense that no calibration was used. We report experimental tests for eight different thicknesses of aluminum (20–500 μm) in free space and on four different substrates: Ti-6Al-4V, 304 stainless steel, copper, and 7075 aluminum, and for five different thicknesses of copper (100–500 μm) on 304 stainless steel. Both the thickness and conductivity could be determined accurately (typically within 10%) and simultaneously if the ratio of the layer thickness to the coil radius was between 0.20 and 0.50. For thinner samples either the thickness could be found if the conductivity were known, or vice versa.

The system digitizes and stores video images acquired by a 64×64 pixel silicon photodiode array. In a joint effort with Vanderbilt University the camera was used to observe three transformations of the undercooled alloys using containerless processing by electromagnetic levitation. The first was solidification where nucleation was induced at an undercooling of 9% Tl, where Tl is the liquidus temperature of the alloy, and the second was solidification where nucleation was spontaneous at an undercooling of 15% Tl. The third event was a solid-state nucleation and growth transformation following the solidification at an undercooling of 15% Tl.

    Notizen: A new instrumental method has been devised for the individual, sequential, or collective measurement of the physical and chemical properties of liquids. The instrumental theory for the fiber drop analyzer (FDA) has been developed for the measurement of surface tension, viscosity, refractive index, and chemical composition of a liquid. An empirical theory is suggested for the measurement of pH in a limited range. The analytical theory for the fiber drop analyzer has been established, a prototype constructed and tested for measuring individually surface tension, viscosity, refractive index, and the chemical composition on a restricted set of test solution. The instrument is shown to have the capability to simultaneously measure the above measurands, but in addition can in individual measurement procedures, measure all these quantities. The instrument perhaps is also potentially capable of measuring specific gravity and pH in its existing form, and other optical properties of liquids with some basic modification. The laboratory FDA has been used to test a series of samples from a large cane sugar manufacturer's process and these measurements demonstrate that this technology has the potential to be used as a remote optrode industrial process monitor for sucrose manufacture and very possibly, elsewhere in other industrial applications.

    Notizen: Ultrasound has been used to track the movement of the solid/liquid interface during the vertical Bridgman growth of germanium. Digitally processed data representing the received ultrasonic signal indicated a time lag prior to crystal growth, and showed a growth rate close to the pulling rate of the furnace. We observed no effect of the ultrasonic energy on the growth of the crystal or on the formation of defects. We have been able to locate the interface to within 0.3 mm in the presence of substantial temperature gradients. An extension of the work presented could lead to a tomographic reconstruction of the interface shape.

    Notizen: Traditional methods of determining phase and group velocities are often inadequate for many thick-section materials that exhibit greater than 30 dB, frequency-dependent propagation losses across the passband of the transducer. This article describes a measurement method that addresses this problem. Our method is mechanized as a pulsed, swept-frequency interferometer. The method's accuracy and reliability are enhanced by a combination of circuit-design improvements, which increase the signal-to-noise ratio and linearity, and signal-processing methods, which remove circuit-related measurement errors and compensate for diffraction. First we describe the foundations of our measurement method and its mechanization. Then we describe the signal-processing procedures, used to calibrate the instrumentation and to determine the absolute phase and group velocities. To illustrate the method, we determine the phase velocities in a very lossy, 50-mm-thick, glass/epoxy specimen in the 0.3–1.2-MHz region.

    Notizen: Environmental isolation of a microrobot is important to achieve the demanding operating specifications intrinsic to such a system. Our experience with the current generation microrobot, MR1, indicates the next generation microrobot, MR2, will require a high degree of isolation from the mechanical, thermal, electromagnetic, and optical environment of a typical laboratory. Accordingly, this paper presents the design, construction, and isolation test results of an environmental isolation platform built to house MR2 and its many subsystems under development in our laboratory. Our design approach used qualitative estimates of the magnitudes of external environmental noise acceptable to microrobot operation to determine the required attenuation of each noise input. The resulting platform consisted of a custom environmental enclosure mounted on a modified commercial vibration isolation optical table. The performance measurements quantified the attenuation of each unwanted disturbance within the frequency bands of interest and a final test was made with a laser heterodyne interferometer installed on the platform in a typical laboratory environment. The results of this experiment show that the isolation specifications required for microrobot operation were met thereby verifying our platform design. We expect that our design can be used in environmental isolation of not only microrobots but also other sensitive electro-optomechanical instruments.

    Notizen: We present an entirely new version of a multipurpose instrument designed for the statistical analysis of point processes, especially those characterized by high bunching. A long sequence of pulses can be recorded in the RAM bank of a personal computer via a suitably designed front end which employs a pair of first-in-first-out (FIFO) memories; these allow one to build an analyzer that, besides being simpler from the electronic point of view, is capable of sustaining much higher intensity fluctuations of the point process. The overflow risk of the device is evaluated by treating the FIFO pair as a queueing system. The apparatus was tested using both a deterministic signal and a sequence of photoelectrons obtained from laser light scattered by random surfaces.

    Notizen: Thermomechanical fatigue, induced by the repeated application of a sufficiently powerful laser pulse, will eventually cause a metallic film to fail. This principle is proposed to cut metal lines for deletive redundancy in microelectronics. Aluminum alloy wires were cut with a series of 5 μs pulses from an argon ion source. The power required to cut 4-μm-wide, 0.75-μm-thick lines was reduced by as much as 87% from that of a single 5 μs laser pulse. By comparison to a single pulse of equal total time, a 70% reduction in power has been realized.

    Notizen: The practice of electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) requires that simultaneous microwave and radio frequency irradiation of the sample be performed. A common arrangement for achieving this requirement is to place a nonresonant coil (rf structure) into a cylindrical TM110 resonant microwave cavity. We examined the vector impedance properties of the radio frequency circuit used in these experiments for the commercially available TM110 ENDOR cavity available from Bruker. Our findings indicate that there is a parasitic capacitance between the cavity wall and the coil, and this capacitance undergoes resonance at frequencies that coincide with distortions in the spectral baseline. We are able to eliminate this resonance condition and the associated baseline aberrations by using a broadband impedance match technique that incorporates a series capacitance and an inductive shunt into the rf circuit.

    Notizen: In order to enhance the utility of pulsed laser deposition, a method to deposit uniform films has been devised. The target and substrate are offset from each other and the substrate is rotated about its axis between laser pulses. We have simulated this process using experimentally determined deposition profiles. Films of uniform thickness to within a few percent across a substrate 5.08 cm in diameter have been fabricated, where we have obtained excellent agreement between theory and experiment.

    Notizen: We demonstrate the utility of a simple, inexpensive, microchannel plate (MCP) detector for monitoring the x-ray fluorescence (XRF) yield in the soft x-ray region. The detector consists of a dual MCP array, and appropriately biased grids. We compare the Al 2p XRF yield to the total-electron yield (TEY) (obtained with the same detector) of single-crystal sapphire. These measurements show that the XRF yield has the following advantages over TEY for monitoring absorption spectra in the soft x-ray region: (1) a greater bulk sensitivity, (2) an insensitivity to charging.

    Notizen: Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) is a well established technique for evaluation of the surface atom arrangement. The information is derived from the elastically scattered electrons. Usually the thermal diffuse background between diffraction spots is assumed to be constant and subtracted as a constant. For spot profile analysis, which provides the arrangement of units like islands or domains, the elastic intensity has to be measured throughout the Brillouin zone. The usual LEED systems (with energy resolution of some eV) cannot distinguish between elastic and thermal diffuse scattering. For that purpose a new instrument has been developed. We combined the deflection unit from a high-resolution LEED system with 127° analyzer from a high-resolution electron energy loss spectrometer (EELS) in a suitable manner. The new instrument was checked with the Si(111), Al(111), and Al(111)+O2 surface. The energy resolution (ΔE=6.7 meV) allows separation of a large fraction of phonon losses. The momentum resolution (transfer width 150 nm) is the same as other high-resolution LEED systems. As a result the first LEED system with both high momentum and high energy resolution is presented (ELS-LEED).

    Notizen: We have developed a simple, two-dimensional piezoelectric tube device which uses the inertial slider method to achieve remote micropositioning in the vertical and horizontal directions. The motion of the slider car occurs with respect to a quartz rod which is attached to, and accelerated by the piezo tube. The vertical motion, against or with gravity, is achieved by activating the longitudinal mode of the piezo tube. The horizontal motion is a rotation about the quartz rod, achieved by activating the bending mode of the piezo tube. The device is very compact, works at cryogenic temperatures and is ultrahigh vacuum compatible. Step sizes from 10 to 3000 nm and speeds up to 0.2 mm/s are possible. A computer simulation model of the inertial slider process has been developed also, to investigate the effectiveness of various activating waveforms. It confirms the advantage of a cycloidal-like waveform recently reported in the literature. Also, the model predictions are consistent with the results obtained in the laboratory. A diagram of the analog circuit developed to produce a cycloidal-like waveform to drive the piezoelectric is included. We briefly describe an alternative design where the activating piezoelectric is attached to the slider car which moves vertically on a fixed quartz rod.

    Notizen: Seismic isolation is a necessity for many delicate experiments such as those designed to search for gravitational radiation. One method of providing a significant amount of isolation has been the use of multiple stage stacks of alternating layers of dense material (metal) and elastic material (rubber). In this work finite element analysis is used to model stack systems in a relatively realistic way, allowing the importance of cross coupling of degrees of freedom to be evaluated. It becomes clear that care has to be taken with the geometrical construction in order to achieve the isolation predicted by simple dynamical analysis.

    Notizen: A time-of-flight spectrometer has been developed to examine the velocity distribution of the hydrogen charge-exchange particles emitted from the TORTUR tokamak. To investigate the scrape-off layer, the spectrometer has been made sensitive to low-energy hydrogen atoms. This has been done by converting the hydrogen atoms into more easily detectable negative hydrogen ions on a cesiated monocrystalline tungsten surface. This detection technique enables examination of the neutral particle flux in a large energy range (5–2000 eV). Typical examples of time-of-flight spectra recorded during TORTUR discharges will be shown.

    Notizen: Beam-attenuation modulation arising from density fluctuations along the orbit of the heavy-ion beam probe (HIBP) in a plasma can distort the local amplitude, coherence, and phase derived from one- and two-point correlation measurements. Path-integral expressions for these effects are derived and applications to the TEXT tokamak are discussed. The work is part of an effort to account for previously reported wave-number data. However, the analysis is general and bears on any correlation measurement in turbulent media that depends on beam propagation or might otherwise be affected by spurious common-mode signals. In the HIBP case the effects depend critically on the ratio of the average fluctuation amplitude ñe along the beam path to the local ñe at the sample volume. Because the fluctuation amplitude is small in the core and rises sharply toward the plasma edge, the contamination effect is negligible in a radial zone near the edge but rises sharply to the interior of a critical radius. With increasing average plasma density n¯e the interior contamination increases strongly and the critical radius moves outward. The conclusion is that beam-modulation fluctuations affect the data but do not fully explain the disagreement with theoretical predictions of drift waves. The effects are expected to decrease with increasing beam energy.

    Notizen: We describe a magnetic induction probe capable of rapid measurement of the critical current densities of superconducting thin films in a noncontacting, nondestructive fashion. The use of an iron core enables us to generate field levels at the sample surface of 4000 A/cm (0.5 T) and thereby to measure a critical current density of 8×107 A/cm2 in a film 0.5-μm thick. The technique provides the ability to measure a current-voltage relationship without contacting the film and, thereby, to establish criteria for the definition of a critical current. We discuss the design, operation, and calibration of the device. The probe has proven effective in evaluating YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) thin films. We observe evidence of "flux creep'' in YBCO films and "flux jumps'' in Nb and NbCN films.

    Notizen: It is shown that a significant increase in the consistency of charge exchange spectroscopy and x-ray spectroscopy data for central ion temperature and plasma rotation is obtained when allowance is made for the following: (i) The charge exchange cross-section dependence on the impact energy of the neutral beam atoms in the frame-of-reference of the C+6 nuclei. In this paper we have experimentally verified the predicted cross-section effects on plasma rotation measurements using charge exchange spectroscopy by comparing to passive x-ray spectroscopy. The effect increases with lighter species. It should be emphasized that this effect is important for the rotation measurements only, while for the ion temperature measurements the effect is small compared to other error sources. (ii) The precise position of the radiating ion shell in line-of-sight averaged measurements using x-ray spectroscopy. For high-temperature plasmas with broad emission profiles the uncertainty in central ion temperature is reduced from up to 60% to the order of 20%.

    Notizen: The layout and construction of a readout electronics for rf superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) with bias frequencies of 3 GHz are described. The electronics uses standard electronic components and can be aligned using a spectrum analyzer. Differences between a conventional 20-MHz electronics and this microwave readout are explained. Each individual circuit block is described and circuit diagrams as well as information for pc-board layout is given. A brief description of thin-film rf-SQUIDs used for experiments with this readout electronics is also included.

    Notizen: We have established a quick and easy, modified dc method to measure thermoelectric power for bulk high transition-temperature (Tc) superconductors. The temperature range investigated is from 300 to 50 K. The apparatus was developed on the basis of our already-existing commercial APD (APD CRYOGENICS INC, Allentown, Pennsylvania) superconductor characterization cryostat with a limited amount of extra instrumentation. The thermoelectric power is measured continuously within the temperature range by the control of a computer, a real time Seebeck coefficient S(T) versus temperature curve is plotted on the computer screen during the measurement, and the data can be saved to a disk. The entire processing period for each sample takes less than 2 h. This apparatus was calibrated with pure lead. By measuring on high Tc superconductors which are well known in thermoelectric power, the system has been shown to have high accuracy and reliability.

    Notizen: The emissivity E of a radiating body as a function of wavelength can be expressed as (ln E)/C2=a+bL+cL2+dL3+@/eL4+ ... . In our first papers we assumed that the variation is linear; only two coefficients are needed. Later we developed "A New, General Method of Temperature Determination,'' which consists of evaluating Te, the calculated blackbody temperature, using one, two, three, and four coefficients (with six wavelengths) in the equation for (ln E)/C2, as well as evaluating its error d'Te. The error is due to the uncertainty in the coefficients. The "correct'' Te, called T*e, is obtained by averaging the Te's, using the d'Te's as weighting factors. We now have found that the radiance temperature Tr is a linear function of the wavelength over a large wavelength range: from 0.40 to 5.00 μm at low temperature and from 0.40 to 1.00 μm at high temperatures. In practical applications, one should use a wavelength range extending from 0.40 μm through the range where the radiation intensity is at its maximum. In the present paper we first summarize the earlier method and then present the "linear'' method applied to data from the literature. We examined tungsten, aluminum alloy 2024, aluminum alloy 7075, titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V, SiC, SiN, and silicon.

    Notizen: The accurate measurement of substrate temperature is important for thin-film deposition processes. In this paper, we report a simple and reproducible method to bond thermocouples directly to a substrate, thus circumventing many difficulties of other temperature measurement techniques. We have ultrasonically bonded 25-μm-diam wires of two different Au-Pt-Pd alloys (14%-31%-55% and 65%-0%-35%), commercially known as Platinel II, to gold bonding pads evaporated onto several surfaces: stainless steel, LaAlO3, Al2O3, and YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) thin films. The ultrasonic bonding process does not change the thermal emf of the thermocouple from the bulk value, and the resultant bond is able to withstand temperature cycling from room temperature to at least 800 °C without detachment of the thermocouple from the surface or change in its thermal emf. We have used these thermocouples to measure the surface temperature of a LaAlO3 substrate and a 2000-A(ring) YBCO film on a LaAlO3 substrate in order to evaluate the effectiveness of silver paste as a thermal contact to anchor substrates to a heater block during the sputter deposition of YBCO thin films. Silver paste is found to provide an excellent contact. At a heater temperature of 750 °C, the temperature difference between the surface of the LaAlO3 substrate and the surface of the heater was 348 °C without silver paste and only 2 °C with silver paste.

    Notizen: A specialized furnace that is compatible with the optical-lever method of thin-film stress measurement has been developed. Its design is geared toward experiments in which changes in stress at constant temperature are to be monitored. Important capabilities include a maximum temperature of over 700 °C, good temperature control, hot-furnace sample insertion, lack of interference with stress measurement, and the use of inert gas or steam as ambients. Application of the furnace to the study of thermally activated material processes is demonstrated in experiments involving water sorption in phosphosilicate glass and crystallization of amorphous silicon.

    Notizen: Heat is deposited in a target material when it is impacted by a projectile. The feasibility of using an infrared thermographic system to measure the surface temperature profile of composite materials under ballistic impact was demonstrated. Three types of composites were used in this instrumentation study to illustrate the effectiveness and limitation of this technique. The resolution of temperature was found to be better than ±1 K. The total temperature rise in the materials during impact can be attributed to the deformation required to perforate the material as well as frictional heat produced between the projectile and the hole. The heat deposited was calculated based of the temperature profiles. The relative contribution of the frictional effect to the total energy absorption was evaluated using a sequential shot technique. Effects of material properties and impact parameters on the peak temperature and heat deposition were determined. Graphite and PE composites are more effective than Kevlar composite in dissipating heat during the ballistic impact penetration process due to their higher thermal conductivity. The correlation between heat dissipation and extent of damage in composites was also investigated.
