Notes: Summary The effect of Arwin® on peripheral arterial occlusive disease has been studied in two multicentre trials. In the first, in cases of severe peripheral arterial circulatory disorders of the lower extremities with permanent rest pain (stages III and III + IV according to Fontaine) Arwin® had a better intravenous therapeutic effect than anticoagulant treatment. A further trial was done to investigate whether subcutaneous administration of Arwin® would have an effect superior to classical conservative therapy with vasodilator drugs in this type of disease. The results were assessed by sequential analysis. Arwin® was again shown to be a much better treatment. Problems of medical documentation and statistics are discussed in relation to the value of sequential analysis.

Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to obtain data about the pharmacological properties of a new glycoside derivative in man. Plasma concentrations and ECG parameters were measured after oral and intravenous administration of a single dose of 1.2 mg methyl proscillaridin in 16 healthy volunteers, using a strictly randomized, two-period change-over design. Glycoside concentrations were measured using a modified86Rb-erythrocyte-assay. QT-duration, corrected for frequency (QTc), was the principal variable measured in the ECG. By either route, there was a maximum plasma level after 1 hour, which had decreased to a minimum at 3 hours, followed by a second peak at 4 to 10 hours (orally〉iv). From 10 to 72 hours the concentrations decreased with a median t 1/2 of 23.3 hours (iv) and 33.0 hours (orally). Comparison of the ratio of plasma concentrations following oral and iv administration resulted in a bioavailability of 69 % using the 48 hour plasma levels, and 59 % using the areas under the concentration-time curves. The mean QTc was maximally shortened to 28 msec at 1 hour after iv and to 19 msec at 10 hours after the oral dose. A distinct similarity between time-concentration and time-QTc curves was seen after the initial distribution phase, both after oral and intravenous administration. The new derivative shows a rapid elimination. Its bioavailability is reasonably high.

Notes: One of the recent applications of ion sources is their use for ion beam assisted deposition of thin films and coatings. This method combines a coating technique such as evaporation or sputtering with bombardment with ions in the keV energy range. The required ions with defined energy, flux, and impact angle are delivered from an ion source. An apparatus for ion beam assisted evaporation with a duoplasmatron ion source is described. The features of the duoplasmatron with respect to application for ion beam assisted deposition such as beam shape, uniformity and intensity, ion-to-neutral ratio, and focused and defocused mode are discussed.

Notes: Ion beam assisted deposition is a versatile technique for preparing thin films and coatings for various applications. Up to now a prototype setup for research purposes has been used in our laboratory. Processing of industrial standard workpieces requires a high current ion source with broad beam and high uniformity for homogeneous bombardment. In this contribution a new apparatus for large area samples will be described. It is named ALLIGATOR (German acronym of facility for ion assisted evaporation on transverse movable or rotary targets). In order to have a wide energy range available two ion sources are used. One delivers a beam energy up to 1.3 keV. The other is suitable for energies from 5 keV up to 40 keV. The "high-energy'' ion source is a multicusp multiaperture source with 180-mA total current and a beam diameter of 280 mm at the target position.

Notes: Abstract The decay properties of the neutron deficient isotopes73–77Kr and73–76Br have been studied at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The total decay energiesQ, as determined fromβ + singles orβ + -γ coincidence measurements, are compared with mass formulae.

Description / Table of Contents: Ion bombardment - a method for Investigating and preventingDuring the last years the technique of ion implantation gained increasing importance. It allows to introduce very element at any temperature in any material and to produce stable as well as metastable alloys. Applications for this method in corrosion science are pointed out in the light of results from different laboratories.First the stability of titanium and zirconium against thermal oxidation after ion bombardment is discussed. Then the passivation behaviour of iron irradiated with chromium and tantalum ions is mentioned. The third section deals with aqueous corrosion of iron and hydrogen evolution in diluted acids. The implantation of lead, gold and platinum is shown to modify the reaction rates by several orders of magnitude. Finally the possibility of using ion bombardment for the investigation of hydrogen embrittlement of metals is demonstrated. The results prove this method for the formation of alloys to allow studies being not accessible with more conventional techniques.

Notes: Abstract An apparatus for CEMS studies of ion beam modified metals is described. The spectrometer can be coupled directly to the ion implanter. During ion bombardement the sample can be cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature or heated to about 500 K. CEMS measurements can be taken directly after ion beam modification between room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature. As a first test of the performance of the apparatus CEMS spectra of boron-ion implanted iron at room temperature are presented.
