The nodulation enhancement activity was influenced by the method chosen to kill theA. vinelandii cells. Heat treatment and treatment with lethal levels of streptomycin destroyed the activity, whereas the activity was unaffected by ultraviolet-light treatment of the cells. Cell-free extracts ofA. vinelandii were found to enhance nodulation. On the other hand, culture supernatants ofA. vinelandii had no effect on nodulation. A split-root experiment suggested that the agent(s) responsible for the increased nodulation was not translocatable throughout the plant. The results suggest a non-excretable protein, produced byA. vinelandii, as a possible mechanism for nodulation enhancement.

    Notes: Summary The literature does not contain a field report of nodulation for the xerophytic tree legumes of the genus Prosopis despite their widespread occurrence in semi-arid regions of the world. A phraetophytically simulated greenhouse experiment was conducted with mesquite in a 3m deep soil column to determine if nodules would form in deper depths where moisture is more abundant. The upper 0.5m in the soil column was allowed to dry to 2200 kPa but the 3.2 m depth was maintained at soil moistures more positive than 70 kPa by water additions to the bottom of the soil column. Over 100 nodules and an acetylene reduction rate of 1.9 mg/h were observed at the 3.2m depth. Nodulation or acetylene reduction were not observed closer than 2.7m from the surface. Air temperatures during these assays exceeded 45°C. Leaf xylem water potentials were in the 2800–3500 kPa range.

    Notes: Summary Field and cylinder experiments conducted in France and in Senegal showed that polyacrylamide, previously proposed as an entrapping gel for preparing Rhizobium inoculants, could be replaced by alginate (AER inoculant) or a mixture of xanthan and carob gum (XER inoculant). Semi-dried or dried AER and XER were used successfully provided that their storage time was less than 90 days. In soil inoculation trails, no marked differences were observed among semi-dried XER, dried AER, and dried XER. A number of seed inoculation experiments indicated that dried XER significantly outranked AER. Seeds preinoculated by up to 48 days with XER yielded plants which were comparable in nodulation and growth parameters to those derived from plant receiving peat inoculation at the time of planting.

    Notes: Summary In order to study the reasons for poor peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) performance on an Avalon medium sandy loam, a three year field study was undertaken to investigate the effects of lime and gypsum applications on growth, yield and quality. Rates of up to 2,400 kg agricultural lime/ha/annum significantly increased soil pH (1N KCl) and exch. Ca and decreased levels of exch. Al and Al saturation in the soil (0–150 mm). The effect of the same rates of gypsum was much less marked, only exch. Ca increasing and Al saturation decreasing to any substantial extent. In the absence of lime (i.e. even where gypsum was applied). nodulation was poor and the plants developed a general chlorosisc. 90 days after planting. Liming markedly improved nodulation whereas annual applications of gypsum had the opposite effect. Liming significantly increased the hay, pod and kernel yields by up to 73, 105 and 117%, respectively. On average, gypsum applications had no significant effects. Liming increased shelling percentage, the percentage mature pods, 100-kernel mass and protein concentration in the kernel, and decreased the incidence of pops and kernels with black plumule. Applications of gypsum had little effect on quality except for a decreased incidence of black plumule. It appeared that the improved crop performance with liming resulted from a reduction in Al toxicity which improved nodulation. Calcium deficiency did not appear to be a major cause of poor peanut growth and quality in the unameliorated soil.

Nodule biomass and activity are compared to the nutrient content of soils within various distances of coffee trunks. Seven coffee plantations, that employI. jinicuil for shade, were examined with respect to nodule biomass, C2H2 reducing activity, and soil characteristics. Highest nodule biomass was observed in soils with high levels of available phosphorus. High nitrogen content of the soil, on the other hand, appeared to be correlated with low nodule biomass. Potassium and magnesium, while apparently having little effect on nodule biomass, seem to be positively correlated with C2H2 reduction.

All strains were highly susceptible to the effects of 200 ppm NO3−N on the establishment of symbiosis; 50 ppm NO3−N had little effect. Nodule isolates from soybean crops growing in nitrifying soil were no less susceptible to the inhibitory effects of mineral N on nodule formation than a laboratory culture of the commercial inoculant strain.

    Notes: Summary Effects of increasing rates of lime (0, 900, 1725, and 3000 kg Ca(OH)2/ha producing soil pH of 4.0, 4.7, 5.1 and 5.6) and P (50, 150, 250 and 350 kg P/ha) on top and root yield, root morphology and chemical composition of lotus (Lotus pedunculatus Cav.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), were studied, using an acid soil in a greenhouse experiment. Increasing rates of applied lime and phosphate resulted in substantial increases in top yields of both species but concomitant increases in root yield were small. In the unlimed soil, lotus out-yielded (tops and roots) white clover at all P levels. However, in the three limed treatments, white clover clearly out-yielded lotus. Yield response curves to applied P levelled off at the two highest lime rates for lotus but not for white clover. Nodulation and N content of white clover increased significantly with increasing lime applications, but for lotus there was a significant decrease in nodulation at the highest lime rate. Increased P rates had a small stimulatory effect on nodulation in both species. Of the total root weight, the percentage contribution of the tap and primary lateral root fractions was smaller and that of the secondary plus tertiary lateral roots was greater for lotus than for white clover although root length per unit weight tended to be larger for white clover at the two highest lime rates. Furthermore, lotus possessed longer and more numerous root hairs than white clover. Lime applications significantly decreased the percentage contribution of the tap and primary lateral roots to the total root weight and increased the percentage contribution of the secondary plus tertiary lateral roots. Al and Mn contents of tops and roots of both species decreased with increasing lime rates. There was a highly significant negative correlation between relative yield and Al content of lotus and white clover tops. In comparison with the limed treatments, in the unlimed treatments a greater percentage of total P, Al, Mn and N content accumulated in the roots of both species. In addition, lotus accumulated a much greater percentage Al in its roots than white clover.

    Notes: Summary Seedlings of a broad based population of alfalfa, (Medicago sativa L.), were visually selected for 2 generations (cycles) in an acid Cecil soil (pH=4.8). Simultaneously, 2 generations of selections were made in a limed Cecil soil (pH=6.2) amended with phosphorus. When tested in acid soil (pH=4.8) with added P, the cycle 2 acid selections yielded significantly more top yield than either the limed selections or the original seed. When grown in the limed soil (pH=6.2) without added P, the acid selections yielded significantly less. There were no significant differences among selections in other soil conditions (pH=4.8, no P added and pH=6.2, P added). Root weight and length and nodule fresh weight correlated well with top yield in all treatments. The yield of the 10 parent varieties and polycrossed seed of their cycle 1 acid and cycle 1 limed selections were compared under two soil conditions (acid and limed). The results of this test indicate that some varieties were more responsive to acid soil selection than other. Overall, none of the 10 varieties showed any decreases in total top yield due to one cycle of selection in either the acid or limed soil conditions.

    Notes: Summary While screening cowpea rhizobia from West Africa for ability to nodulate various host species, foliar chlorosis was observed in young mung bean and soybean plants inoculated with certain strains. The chlorosis occurred in the first and sometimes the second trifoliate, but not on subsequent leaves. There was no correlation of symptoms with the presence of nodules. Where extreme chlorosis was induced in soybeans, there was stunting of the primary root. Disease symptoms were obtained with culture-broth supernatants free of rhizobia, indicating an extracellular toxin. In common with rhizobitoxine-producing strains ofR. japonicum, chlorosis-inducing cowpea strains were able to nodulate ‘non-nodulating’ soybeans of the rj1rj1 genotype.

    Notes: Summary Effects of factors associated with soil acidity (low pH, low calcium, high aluminium and high manganese) on theTrifolium repens-Rhizobium trifolii symbiosis were investigted under laboratory conditions using an axenic solution-culture technique. 200 μM manganese increased root elongation in the range pH 4.3–5.5, but had no effect on root hair formation, the number of Rhizobium in the rhizosphere, or nodule formation. Root elongation and root hair formation were unaffected at pH 4.3 when 500 or 1000μM calcium was supplied, whereas multiplication of Rhizobium in the rhizosphere and nodulation were inhibited at pH 4.3 and 4.7.50–1000μM calcium had no effect either on the multiplication of Rhizobium in the range pH 4.3–5.5, or on nodule formation in the absence of aluminium. 50 μM aluminium inhibited, root elongation and root hair formation at pH 4.3 and 4.7; the effect on root elongation was reduced by increasing the calcium concentration from 50 to 1000μM. 50μM aluminium also inhibited Rhizobium multiplication in the rhizosphere and reduced nodule formation at pH 5.5 (at which aluminium precipitated out of solution), but root elongation and root hair formation were unaffected. These, effects of aluminium at pH 5.5 may explain the poor response to inoculation by white clover in acid mineral soils after liming.

    Notes: Summary Black alder seedlings were grown from seed for 7 weeks in six soils limed to various pH levels and inoculated withFrankia in two inoculation-seeding time combinations (inoculated and seeded concurrently; inoculated then seeded 5 weeks after inoculation). Three mine soils and three non-mine soils were used. Soil pHs in the study ranged from 3.6 to 7.6. In the second inoculation-seeding time combination, a series of soil samples at each of the pH levels below 7.0 were relimed to pH 7.0 immediately prior to seeding. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of soil acidity on the nodulation of black alder byFrankia and the viability ofFrankia in acid soils. Based on the average number of nodules established per seedling, soil pH was determined to be a significant factor affecting nodulation in the mine soils. The highest levels of nodulation occurred between soil pH 5.5 and 7.2. Below pH 5.5, nodulation was reduced. There was also evidence of decreased viability of the endophyte below pH 4.5.

    Notes: Summary A chlorotic condition of soybeans in the river valleys of eastern Nebraska was studied. The pattern of chlorosis, presence of petiolar necrosis, reductions in rhizobial and mycorrhizal infection, and plant and soil chemical analyses suggest that the condition is more complex than normal iron deficiency chlorosis or other mineral deficiencies or toxicities. Nodulation is almost totally inhibited in affected plants. Mycorrhizal fungi, while able to infect early in the season, do not persist on affected plants. Breakdown of endodermis was observed in the roots of affected plants. The factors contributing to this condition have not yet been determined.

    Notes: Summary The effect of 2-day cycles of osmotically induced leaf moisture stress followed by partial recovery on the nodulation and nitrogenase activity of 2 soya cultivars was studied. Fourteen days after plant inoculation (mid-growth stage) the total leaf electrochemical water potential (ψwleaf) of control plants ranged from −0.8 to −1.9 bars, whereas the concentrations of osmoticum (polyethylene glycol 4000) induced ψwleaf values ranging from −1.4 (recovery value) to −3.1 bars (low stress), −1.8 to −4.4 bars (mild stress), and −2.2 to −6.2 bars (medium stress). The low stress treatment reduced nodule numbers and their specific activity in both cultivars, without affecting nodule size or the time required for nodule initiation. Nodule initiation was delayed in both cultivars by the mild and medium stress treatments, the former treatment reducing the number and size of the nodules and such nodules exhibited very low specific activity. The medium stress treatment prevented the further development of nodule initials, which remained inactive throughout the experiment. Such results imply an effect of water stress on the infection process and on nodule morphogenesis. The reduction in nodule numbers observed in water stressed plants was not associated with a reduced number of rhizobia in the rhizoplane nor due to an effect on root growth or root hair formation. At a stage prior to the formation of macroscopic nodule initials, the roots of plants under medium stress (ψwleaf=−5.5 bar)s) had a higher content of abscisic acid (ABA) (4-fold increase) and a lower content of gibberellin (GA)-like substances (21.4% reduction) as compared to control plants (ψwleaf=−1.0 bar). Although the medium stress treatment slightly increased the stomatal resistance of leaves, photosynthetic and transpiration rates were unaffected. Similar alterations of the hormononal balance occurred in the nodulated roots of plants subjected to naturally induced leaf moisture stress. Since the foliar application of ABA (1.92×10−5 M) to unstressed plants inhibited nodulation (45% reduction in nodule numbers), the increased endogenous content of thishormone in the roots of plants under leaf moisture stress may provide some physiological insight into the inhibitory effect of water stress on the nodulation process.

In unsterilized soil, an unknown biotic factor was present that reduces growth ofH. rhamnoides, nodulation and multiplication of the nematodes. This factor seems to interact with the nematodes in reducing growth ofH. rhamnoides.

    Notes: Summary Three phases of Rhizobium inoculation trials were carried out as part of a programme to select forage legume germplasm adapted to acid, infertile Oxisols of tropical America. Firstly, a range of tropical forage legumes were evaluated for their response to N fertilization or inoculation with strains previously shown to be effective in Leonard jars, using cores of undisturbed soil or in the field at Carimagua, Meta, Colombia. In pure legume stands onlyCentrosema macrocarpum andC. pubescens showed increases in N yield due to both inoculation and N fertilization;C. brasilianum responded only to N fertilization;Zornia latifolia, Z. brasiliensis andStylosanthes capitata responded to neither treatment. Trials in cores and in grass-legume mixtures showed responses ofDesmodium ovalifolium, Pueraria phaseoloides andS. capitata to N fertilization but not to inoculation. In the second phase of experiments strains were screened in soil cores with 16 ecotypes ofDesmodium, Centrosema, Stylosanthes andPueraria spp. Significant increases in N yield due to inoculation occurred with at least one strain in all the legumes exceptS. guianensis ‘tardio’, and in some trials withS. capitata. In the third phase of trials the most effective strains were tested in the field. Significant response ofP. phaseoloides andC. macrocarpum to inoculation at two sites and in the second year after establishment were shown. Further screening trials and field trials at different sites are needed in order to provide better recommendations for inoculation of grazing trials being set up in the region under study.

    Notes: Summary In pea (Pisum sativum L.), mutants could be induced, modified in the symbiotic interaction withRhizobium leguminosarum. Among 250 M2-families, two nodulation resistant mutants (K5 and K9) were obtained. In mutant K5 the nodulation resistance was monogenic recessive and not Rhizobium strain specific. Out of 220 M2-families one mutant nod3 was found which could form nodules at high nitrate concentrations (15 mM KNO3). This mutant nodulated abundantly with severalRhizobium strains, both in the absence and presence of nitrate. Probably as the result of a pleiotropic effect, its root morphology was also changed. Among 1800 M2-families, five nitrate reductase deficient mutants were obtained and one of them (mutant E1) was used to study the inhibitory effect of nitrate on nodulation and nitrogen fixation. The results of the present investigation show that pea mutants which are modified in their symbiosis withRhizobium leguminosarum, can readily be obtained. The significance of such mutants for fundamental studies of the legume-Rhizobium symbiosis and for applications in plant breeding is discussed.

In screening trials where a range of Rhizobium strains was used to inoculateD. ovalifolium, P. phaseoloides andC. macrocarpum grown in undisturbed soil cores, strains CIAT 2335, 2434 and 1780, respectively, caused the greatest increases in N yield. Inoculation caused greater increases of nodule numbers relative to the uninoculated control inC. macrocarpum than inD. ovalifolium orP. phaseoloides. When each legume was inoculated with the most effective strain by different methods, and grown in soil cores, it was found that granulated inoculant (0.5 g/seed) was more effective than seeds pelleted with 50 g inoculant/kg for the small-seededD. ovalifolium, but was similar in effectiveness to pelleted inoculant for the larger-seededP. phaseoloides. With the relatively large-seededC. macrocarpum, granulated inoculant was less effective than pelleted inoculant. No clear differences between different types of pellets were observed. The results show that undisturbed cores of acid infertile Oxisol can be used to screen for Rhizobium strains tolerant to these adverse soil conditions, although selected strains should then be subjected to further screening in the field, to determine whether they would make suitable commercial inoculants. It may not be possible to obtain maximum responses to inoculation by all legumes, unless the inoculation methods used here are improved.

    Notes: Summary The effect of level of CaCO3, inoculation and lime pelleting on the nodulation, dry matter yield and % N content of common bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) grown in five acid soils was investigated in a greenhouse study. The soils represented a range in pH from 3.9 to 5.1, in exchangeable Al from 0.0 to 4 meq/100 gm, in exchangeable Mn from 0.35 to 2.32 me/100 gm, and in %C from 0.69 to 5.60. Nodule weight decreased with increasing %C and for the soil with highest %C (5.60) no nodules were observed. In soils with low organic matter and low exchangeable Al and Mn, inoculation increased nodule weight, dry matter yield and %N especially at the lowest pH level. Where the seeds were not inoculated, nodule weight and dry matter yield increased with soil pH. No such increases were observed where the seeds were inoculated. There was no apparent advantage in lime pelleting in such soils. In soils with low organic matter content and with substantial amounts of Al and/or Mn, liming increased nodule weight and dry matter yield, and decreased exchangeable Al and/or Mn. Lime pelleting was superior to mere inoculation in increasing nodule weight particularly at low lime rates. In soils with relatively high organic matter content, nodulation was very low or none at all. Low lime rates had little effect on exchangeable Al and Ca and dry matter yield. Higher lime rates, however, decreased exchangeable Al and dry matter yield but increased exchangeable Ca.

    Notes: Conclusions Mycorrhizal fungi increase the rate of phosphate uptake by roots (P inflow) over a range of soil P levels even when mycorrhizal growth increases no longer occur. It is likely that the fungi play a direct part in uptake and translocation of P to the roots. V.A.M. effects on nodulation and N2 fixation are largely indirect, probably resulting from improved P nutrition and growth at low soil P levels. Work on inorganic cation nutrition is much less advanced, but it is already clear that there are interactions between P nutrition and cation uptake which may also be indirect. The pattern of N assimilation (N2 fixation vis-à-vis NaNO3 or (NH4)2SO4 uptake) may modify cation/P interactions. Further work is required to distinguish cause and effect and to clarify the role played by V.A.M. fungi.

Nodulation tests using 7Frankia strains indicated that the clone AC-4 (Nod−) was non-nodulating with 6 of the 7Frankia strains tested. One strain,Frankia ANNI, isolated from one unique nodule produced on the mother-plant AC-4, induced 38% of the AC-4 plantlets to nodulate but with a number of nodules 10 to 20 times less than the clones AC-2 (Nod+) and AC-5 (Nod+). Morphological observations of the roots of AC-4 (Nod−) indicated that this clone had few and abnormally short root hairs.

    Notes: Summary Conditions and techniques for achieving good nodulation ofPhaseolus vulgaris L. in continuously aerated solution were developed from greenhouse experiments. If nodules had been established, their growth and activity and the growth of the plant were at least as good in solution culture as in gravel culture. Nodule formation was observed within 10 days of inoculation in small volumes of solution culture (1 liter). In large volumes (19 liters), similarly prompt nodulation occurred only if the plants were inoculated before or immediately after the seedlings were transferred to the solution from gravel or vermiculite; and the nodules were restricted to the roots that had been present at the time of transfer. Delayed inoculation, 2 days after transfer to large volume solutions, led to sparse nodulation observed only after 3 weeks. Delay or inhibition of nodulation in large volumes of solution could not be explained by failute of bacteria to colonize roots or by sparsity of root hairs. Nodule initiation in solution culture was severely inhibited at pH below 5.4. An additional problem in growing N2-dependent bean in solution culture was the buildup of Cl− to toxic levels in the plant in nitrate-free media, even at solution concentrations as low as 0.4 mM Cl−. Daily addition of 0.5 to 1.0 mg N per plant delayed nodule growth and activity slightly, but increased plant growth and alleviated the severe N-deficiency that otherwise developed before the onset of N2-fixation.

    Notes: Summary The effect of lime and P application on yield (top and root weigh), nodulation, intervally collected acetylene reduction (N2-fixation), and N and Al uptake of young alfalfa (46 days growth) were investigated in greenhouse pots containing acid Bladen or Bradson topsoils. The effect on seed germination and seedling persistence under these greenhouse conditions was also recorded. Alfalfa yield and acetylene reduction increased with lime and P additions in both soils, but, predominately, with P. There was no advantage of increasing these two parameters with liming past pH 6.0 provided P was adequate. Positive relationships (R2) existed between yield and acetylene reduction, and with both factors and root weight, nodule weight, and N uptake. Increased uptake of Al by alfalfa seedlings depressed yield, but data indicate P may block Al uptake at high soil pH. There were no treatment effects on seed germination, but P application increased plant persistence in the Bladen soil.

Limiting plant growth by decreasing the supply of nutrients in an otherwise nitrogen-free medium, increased the size but decreased the number and the nitrogenase activity of nodules formed by a fast-growing strain of Lotus Rhizobium (NZP2037). In contrast decreasing nutrient supply caused only a small decline in the size, number and nitrogenase activity of nodules formed by a slow-growing strain (CC814s). Providing small quantities of NH4NO3 (50 to 250 μg N) to plants grown with a normal supply of other nutrients stimulated nodule development by both Rhizobium strains and increased the nitrogenase activity of the NZP2037 nodules. Differences in the level of effectiveness (nitrogen-fixing ability) of nodules formed by different Rhizobium strains on plants grown with a normal supply of nutrients were less apparent when the plants were grown with decreased nutrient supply or when the plants were supplied with low levels of inorganic N. Inter-strain competition for nodulation ofL. pedunculatus between the highly effective slow-growing strain CC814s and 7 other fast- and slow-growing strains, showed CC814s to form 42 to 100% of the nodules in all associations. The greater nodulating competitiveness of strain CC814s prevailed despite changes in the nutrient supply to the host plant. A tendency was observed for partially effective Lotus Rhizobium strains to become more competitive in nodule formation when plant growth was supplemented with low levels of inorganic nitrogen.

M1 produced more, but smaller nodules than the wild-type; these nodules lacked leghaemoglobin. M2 and the parental strain had similar nodulation characteristics, both forming large pink nodules. Plants inoculated with M3, nodulated earlier, produced more nodules (58%), had increased dry weights (26%) and the excised roots expressed greater acetylene (C2H2) reducing activity (39%) than plants inoculated with the wild-type. When competing with an indigenous population of effective rhizobia for nodule sites, M3 produced a higher proportion of the nodules (70–80%) than the parental strain (40–53%). M3 and the parental strain exhibited comparable rates of asymbiotic C2H2 reduction when grown on a defined medium, whereas M1 and M2 were inactive. The symbiotic properties of the mutants were unchanged after their reisolation following plant passage.

    Notes: Abstract Medicago laciniata, an annual leguminous plant of Saharo-Sindian origin, is particularly refractory to root nodulation by most strains ofRhizobium meliloti. Using a series of such bacterial strains belonging to the 8 groups of Brockwell and Hely, and a variety of environmental conditions, it was noted that several normally non-nodulating strains (at 20°C) produced ineffective nodules at root temperatures of 24°C to 28°C. Nodulation at 20°C failed to occur in the presence of a wide variety of test compounds and physical conditions. No phytoalexins or anti-Rhizobium growth inhibitors were isolated from inoculated root tissue at any temperature. Temperature shift experiments indicated no infection of the root hairs at 20°C, and infection threads produced at the permissive root temperature failed to elongate after transfer to 20°C. However, if meristematic activity had been initiated in the inner root-cortical cells as a result of infection thread penetration at 28°C, no blockage of nodule maturation occurred upon subsequent transfer to 20°C root temperature. Nodules produced at 28°C were completely devoid of nitrogenase activity, although the apical (but not the distal) regions contained normal-appearing bacteriods, surrounded by enclosing membranes, and possessed a fully functional leghaemoglobin. A shortage of metabolic energy did not appear to be involved in the ineffective response. A hypothesis to explain the nodulation phenomenon observed was based on the observation in the roots of 2 factors present at 20°C but not at 28°C.

    Notes: Summary A field experiment was conducted on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) with a view to find out the effect of seed inoculation and scheduling of irrigation on nodulation, accumulation and re-distribution of nitrogen in plant tops and soil. The eight treatment combinations consists of two seed inoculations,viz. uninoculated and inoculated with rhizobium culture, and four irrigation schedules,viz. irrigation water to the cumulative pan evaporation (IW/CPE) ratio of 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and a control (rainfed). Seed inoculation by, rhizobium culture increased the number, dry-weight and N content of nodules per plant. Inoculation of seeds also increased the N accumulation rate in plant top and it was 2.48 kg/ha/day during the flower-initiation to the pod-initiation stage (30–60 days interval). At harvest, 32.2, 47.8 and 26.2 kg N/ha was re-distributed from the stems, leaves and pods-wall of inoculated plants to the grains, respectively. A total of 186.5 kg N/ha was harvested and 64.7 kg N/ha, was accumulated in soil under the inoculated condition. Scheduling of irrigation at 0.7 IW/CPE proved better, than other irrigation schedules and helped in increasing the nodulation, nitrogen accumulation and grain yield. As compared to control, 8.4, 17.8 and 18.4 kg more of N/ha was redistributed from the stems, leaves and pods-wall respectively when the irrigations were scheduled at 0.7 IW/CPE ratio. Under this irrigation schedule the total N harvest was 200.1 kg/ha while the total N increased by 55.9 kg over that present in soil at the time of sowing.

    Notes: Summary A controlled environment experiment was used to examine the growth and nodulation response of chickpea to a range of soil nitrate (NO 3 − ) levels (0, 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 mM). Dry matter production, nodule mass and number, dinitrogen (N2) fixation via the acetylene (C2H2) reduction method, total nitrogen content and NO 3 − concentration were measured at 56 and 90 days from inoculated and uninoculated plants. It was found that chickpeas were less sensitive to the inhibitory effects of NO 3 − than soybeans. High NO 3 − appeared to inhibit the production of nodules early in growth, however, by the second harvest nodulation was stimulated by high NO 3 − levels. Increasing NO 3 − levels gave positive responses in tops and roots dry weight production but, proportionally, these effects were greatest with uninoculated plants. 3 and 6 mM NO 3 − gave similar root and tops dry weight in inoculated plants after 90 days. Nodule dry weight production per pot was maximised at 3.0 mM NO 3 − at both plant harvests. Whilst NO 3 − at 6 mM still gave a strong stimulation of acetylene reduction compared to 0 and 0.75 mM NO 3 − , there appeared to be a trend suggesting an inhibitory effect of 6 mM NO 3 − on C2H2 reduction compared to 1.5 and 3.0 mM NO 3 − .

    Notes: Summary The effect of exogenous applications of gibberellins (GAs) or the growth retardant β-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride (CCC) on root nodule formation and activity (C2H2-reduction) in soya was studied. Daily foliar application of GA3 (2.89×10−6 M) delayed the formation of nodule initials and reduced the numbers mass nodule−1 and specific activity of nodules by 43%, 31% and 47% respectively, without affecting plant growth. Similar effects on nodulation were produced by foliar application of GA4 (3.01×10−5 M) or GA7 (3.03×10−5 M), or by the addition of GA3 (2.89×10−6 M) to the rooting medium. GA effectiveness in reducing nodule numbers was decreased by delaying its application until after the initial infection process had occurred, but the nodules formed were smaller and less active than those of the untreated control plants. The GA effect on nodulation and nodule activity was not associated with alterations in root exudate or due to a direct inhibitory effect of the hormone on the nitrogenase system. When the endogenous root content of GA-like substances was reduced (86% decrease) by foliar application of CCC (6.30×10−5 M), nodule numbers were increased by 56%, but nodule size and total nodule activity were similar to those of control plants. The GA and CCC treatments had no effect on rhizobial growth in liquid culture nor on root colonisation by rhizobia. The results suggest that the endogenous content of root GA may have a regulatory role in both the infection process and in subsequent nodule morphogenesis, thus controlling both the number and effectiveness of the root nodules formed.

    Notes: Summary The occurrence and the infectivity of Frankia, the root-nodule endophyte ofAlnus glutinosa, were studied in different kinds of soil in the Netherlands. Both field and pot experiments indicated that many soils, on which alders have not been grown before, had low numbers of endogenous Frankia or none at all. Inoculation of these soils usually enhanced growth and nodulation of alders. The effect of fertilizer treatments on growth and nodulation ofA. glutinosa were studied in experimental plots. Alders grown in sandy soils, dressed with farmyard manure had the highest yield and the most nodules. The influence of inoculation with homogenates of Sp(+) and Sp(−) nodules and with a pure culture of Frankia AvcIl were studied in pot experiments. The quantity of different kinds of inoculum needed to obtain good growth and nodulation of alder was estimated. The results indicated that addition of a nodule homogenate of 90 g fresh AvcIl Sp(+) nodules is sufficient to inoculate one hectare of nursery soil to produce 10 nodules per plant, while a thousand times larger amount of inoculum is necessary when Sp(−) nodules are used. The limitations and the potentials of using nodule homogenates and pure cultures of Frankia for inoculation in forestry are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The infective potential (IP) of nodule homogenates from field-grownHippophaë rhamnoides L. ssp.rhamnoides was determined by counting the number of nodules formed on test plants after inoculation with various dilutions of the homogenates. The IP was almost constant,i.e. 105 to 106 per gram of fresh nodule material. Methods to store nodule material without loss of IP were tested. The IP of air-dried nodule powders stored at 6°C hardly decreased during a period of more than a year. Data are presented on the IP of soil samples from sites representing various stages of dune formation. BeforeH. rhamnoides appeared, the IP was low: 1 to 36 nodules were formed on test plants per kg of soil. This low IP was due to low numbers of infective endophyte particles in these soils. During the succession of theH. rhamnoides scrub, the IP of the soil increased, due to the increase in the number of endophyte particles in the soil. Gradually, however, nodulation was limited by other environmental factors. The nature of these factors is discussed.

    Notes: Summary To explain the decline of Hippophaë scrub in the vegetation succession in the dunes of The Netherlands, the growth and nodulation of Hippophaë plants grown in pots, using soil from an early stage (site AH) and a post-optimum stage (site HP), were investigated. In HP-soil nodulation, yield, and the nitrogen and phosphorus content of test plants were always lower and the number of necrotic nodules and the dry matter content were always higher than in AH-soil, even after inoculation with crushed nodules and the addition of a nutrient solution. Plants in HP-soil also had darker roots, less root hairs, a higher number of short lateral roots and a higher percentage of dead roots than those in AH-soil. These characteristics of adverse growth conditions disappeared upon ignition or gamma-irradiation of HP-soil. Possible explanations of these results are discussed. The degeneration of Hippophaë scrub cannot be ascribed to the age of the plants, the absence of sufficient infective endophyte particles or to abiotic factors such as unfavourable physical (particle size) or chemical soil conditions but is caused by biotic factors. No indications were obtained that plant-pathogenic fungi and bacteria are involved. HP-soil in contrast to AH-soil, however, contained large numbers of the nematodeLongidorus sp., a species known to cause root deformations. The conclusion was that this nematode is one of the biotic factors involved in the degeneration of the Hippophaë scrub. This degeneration is due to a restriction of the root system resulting in a low phosphate uptake, a low nodulation capacity and, as a consequence, a low nitrogen content. The results demonstrate that biotic soil factors are important in influencing succession in higher plant communities.

    Notes: Summary The differential response of six cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) cultivars to liming was assessed in a greenhouse trial using an Ultisol (Typic Paleudult) from southeastern Nigeria. Lime rates from 0 to 5.0 t/ha were applied to give a range of soil pH, determined in 1∶1 soil/water from 4.25 to about 7.0. Without liming, relative dry matter yields of tops ranged between 46.6 and 76.8 percent. Significant yield responses to the first lime increment (0.5 t/ha) were observed particularly in the less tolerant cultivars and maximum yields were generally obtained with application of 1.6 to 2.5 t/ha lime. Among the six cultivars, TVu 4557 and Ife Brown were most tolerant, Vita-1 and Vita-3 were moderately tolerant, and TVu 1977-OD and TVu 4552 were least tolerant to soil acidity. The latter two cultivars were the most poorly nodulated when grown in the unlimed soil. The first lime increment enabled excellent nodulation to be achieved in all cultivars. Nitrogen analyses on tops confirmed the visual symptoms of nitrogen deficiency in two cultivars (Vita-1, TVu 1977-OD) grown in the unlimed soil. Analysis of data on chemical composition of plant tops and chemical soil characteristics gave indications that aluminium toxicity is the major growth limiting factor for cowpeas in this soil. This study, albeit with a limited range of cowpea germplasm clearly indicates that cowpea possesses considerable potential as a grain legume on strongly acid soils (pH〈5.0), even in circumstances where lime is not available. Low rates of lime (0.5 t/ha or less) will greatly expand the available choice of cultivars.

With, 10 μM phosphate, 50 μM aluminium reduced or inhibited root elongation at pH〈5.0, root hair formation at pH〈 5.0–5.5, and Rhizobium multiplication in the rhizosphere and nodule formation at pH〈6.0. In the absence of aluminium, root elongation and root hair formation were reduced at pH〈4.3, and Rhizobium multiplication and nodule formation were inhibited at pH〈5.0. Root hair formation was more sensitive to aluminium at pH〈5 than was root elongation. No effect of aluminium on Rhizobium multiplication and nodule formation at pH〈5 was detected because both were sensitive to pH alone. At pH 5.5 most of the aluminium changed immediately to a form which was susceptible to low-speed centrifugation, but which was detected by the aluminon method of analysis, and after 24 h a precipitate formed. the concentration of phosphate was reduced also, to approximately 1μM. Toxicity was overcome by either increasing the phosphate concentration from 10 to 50 μM, or by increasing the pH to 6.0 and the calcium, concentration to 1000μM.

    Notes: Summary Alfalfa plants,Medicago sativa L., were selected from the Florida 66 cultivar for vigor in an acid (pH 4.4, Al≥.4 meq/100 g) and a limed, fertilized (pH 6.5, Al=0 meq/100 g, P and K added) Cecil topsoil. The selected plants were intermated by selection condition to achieve two germplasms, acid selected (A-1) and limed, fertile selected (L-1). ARhizobium meliloti strain (79-4s) was isolated from a high acetylene reducing nodule from a plant in a similar acid soil. The germplasms and the Rhizobium strain were then tested in greenhouse pots for agronomic performance under a variety of soil pH and fertility conditions. The 79-4s inoculum, as well as commercially prepared inoculum, gave better plant yield and acetylene reduction (N2-fixation) at all harvests when compared to a sterile peat control, but the commercial inoculum was the best inoculum treatment. The A-1 germplasm produced higher shoot dry weight at the final harvest than did the L-1 germplasm at all soil pH’s when P and K were applied at the highest rates. The A-1 germplasm also had better root weight (mainly fibrous roots) and acetylene reduction in these soil conditions. The two germplasms appear to be genetically distinct and respond differently depending on soil pH and fertility conditions.

    Notes: Summary A pot experiment was conducted to assess the effects of different fertilizers and soil shading on nodulation and acetylene reduction ofInga jinicuil seedlings. Initially, seedlings produced maximum nodule biomass when grown with high levels of phosphorus but reduced the most acetylene under intermediate phosphorus fertilization. These response differences, however, gradually diminished with age, being negligible when the seedlings were a year old. Nitrogen fertilization inhibited nodulation and acetylene reduction throughout the experiment. Potassium did not significantly affect nodulation, but low levels of potassium stimulated, and high levels inhibited acetylene reduction activity relative to unfertilized control plants. Neither magnesium nor molybdenum affected nodulation or acetylene reduction. Soil shading resulted in decreased nodule biomass and less nitrogen-fixing activity during summer months. However, the data suggest that shading may favour nitrogen fixation in colder periods by moderating soil temperatures. These results confirm findings from an earlier field study and show that nodulation and nitrogen-fixing activity by leguminous trees is influenced by the types and amounts of nutrients supplied. This suggests that the quantity of nitrogen fixed by leguminous shade trees in coffee plantations may be amenable to manipulation through simple management techniques.

    Notes: Summary The competition between slow- and fast-growing types of rhizobia for nodulation of cowpeas was studied using modified Leonard-jars. Rhizosphere populations of Rhizobium, mixed and pure populations, were examined on cowpea plants grown in large glass tubes. At 25°C and at a low level of inoculation, the fast-growing strain, NGR 234, dominated the rhizosphere but at 30°C, the slow-growing strain CB 756 dominated or was equally represented depending on its initial level in the mixed inoculum. At 25°C/23°C (day/night), the fast-growing strain from Lablab (NGR 234) was a superior competitor for nodule sites compared with three slow-growing strains of Rhizobium. When plants were grown at 30°/26°C, the slow-growing rhizobia were the better competitors for host nodulation. Fast-growing strains from Mimosa and Leucaena were poor competiors at both temperatures. The results were influenced by the proportions of the competing strains, as well as the total numbers of rhizobia, in the mixed inoculum. Other factors, including ‘host preferences’, host compatibility and time taken for nodule initiation, also contributed to the relative success of competing strains. The results reflect the persistent isolation in tropical regions of slow-growing cowpea-type of rhizobia from most tropical legumes. Dual occupancy of nodules by both fast- and slow-growing rhizobia occurred in 0–15% of the nodules formed for most paired inocula. However, the fast-growing Leucaena isolate NGR 14/1 was present in 73 to 83% of the nodules formed by the slow-grower CB 756.

    Notes: Summary The responses of white clover (cv NZ Grasslands Huia grown in four UK hill soil types) to additions of lime and P, to inoculation with Rhizobium and mycorrhizal fungi, and to differences in soil water status were assessed in pot and field experiments. With a deep peat soil in pots, shoot production, nodulation and N fixation by clover were increased by 160, 130 and 85% respectively following inoculation with mycorrhiza, but in the field, despite a doubling of root infection, there was no response in growth. On a brown earth soil in the field inoculation with one endophyte (Glomus mosseae L1) out of four tested depressed production of white clover shoots by 42% but enhanced that of leeks (Allium porrum) by 50%; the others were without effect. With dry peaty podzol and brown earth soils in pots, clover shoot production was highest with added P when a water holding capacity of 80% was maintained, but roots from the latter had only 2.6 compared to 68 nodules per plant from the former. Further work is required to explain poor nodulation in the brown earth soils.

    Notes: Summary Most soybean varieties fail to nodulate effectively in tropical soils unless inoculated with a competitive strain ofRhizobium japonicum. Developing countries in the tropics, with few exceptions, lack inoculant industries to produce and distribute viable inoculants to small farmers and extension programs to teach them to use inoculant. Several soybean genotypes have been identified that nodulate effectively with many strains of the “cowpea” inoculation group which is ubiquitous in tropical soils of Africa. Soybean genotypes that nodulate and grow well without inoculant application are called “promiscuous”. Methodologies for incorporation of the promiscuity character into high-yielding backgrounds are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Using primitive and wild pea plants from Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, three host genes were detected, which confer resistance to nodulation by Rhizobium strains of cultivated peas from Europe. A dominant gene Sym 1 controls temperature-sensitive nodulation in pea cv. Iran. Another gene Sym 2 confers general resistance to a large number of European Rhizobium strains at all temperatures used. The degree of dominance of the latter gene is dependent on the Rhizobium strain used. A third gene Sym 4 is responsible for specific resistance to a single Rhizobium strain.

    Notes: Abstract It was observed in a long-term fertility study that P application results in better nodulation and seed yield. The N yield per plant increased significantly with P, K, and B application, but the promoting effect of K and B on N content per plant was not reflected in the final yield. Data on mean nutrient uptake indicate that about 63% of N, 68% of P, 23% of K, 4% of Ca and 24% of Mg were present in the kernels, the remainder being in the haulm and shells. Soil will be exhausted fast if the nutrient rich groundnut residues are completely exported from the field and not compensated by adequate fertilizer application. Judicious use of fertilizers on groundnut has been shown to yield more than 100 kg of biologically fixed N per hectare.

    Notes: Summary Effects of P and S on growth and regrowth were assessed in a greenhouse trial in which Clitoria was grown through three cuttings on a deficient soil with a factorial combination of 4 levels of P and 3 levels of S. Phosphorus deficiency caused stunting, flowering delay, and a rusty appearance of leaflets. Sulfur deficiency caused stunting and chlorosis. With successive cuttings, P deficiency became less severe and S deficiency more severe. Nodulation observed at the end of the trial, was influenced more by S than by P. Maximal nodulation was achieved with the highest S level, at any of the highest three P levels. Root and stubble dry weight, and food reserves evaluated by etiolated regrowth and by soluble sugar in roots and stubble, responded positively to both P and S, and correlated with each other and with shoot growth preceding the final cutting. For maximal etiolated regrowth, the S requirement was higher than the P requirement.

    Notes: Summary A greenhouse experiment on a silt loam surface soil (Typic Hapludult) was done to investigate effects of P and S on yield, quality aspects and sugar reserves in the tropical forage legumeClitoria ternatea L. Four levels of P and two N treatments (NH4NO3 vs symbiotic) were arranged in a factorial design with four replications. After the first cutting two levels of S were imposed on this design. Phosphorus enhanced dry matter yield in the first cutting. Its effect was smaller in the second cutting. Amount of P required to produce maximum plant yield dropped from 200 mg/kg soil (or more) at the first cutting to 50–100 mg/kg at the second. Added S improved growth at suboptimal levels of P. At optimal P and S, symbiotic and +N plants yielded alike. Phosphorus and S fertilization caused several changes in plant composition. Nitrogen concentration was raised by S treatment and lowered by P. Combined addition of P and S lowered plant nitrate content. In symbiotic plants, soluble sugar concentrations were higher than in N-treated plants, and were increased by P and S treatment. In N-treated plants, neither P nor S increased reducing sugar concentration, but they increased total sugar.

    Notes: Summary Studies under growth cabinet conditions investigated the effect of source and concentration of nitrogen and timing of nitrogen application on the growth and nitrogen fixation byLotus pedunculatus cv. Maku andTrifolium repens cv. S184. KNO3, NaNO3 and NH4NO3 were added at transplanting at the following rates: 3.33, 7.78 and 13.33 mg N/plant. KNO3 was added at 3.33 and 7.78 mg N/plant at 0, 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30 days after transplanting. Lotus shoot weight increased with all increasing nitrogen sources but clover only responded to KNO3 and NaNO3. The root weight of both species increased with increasing KNO3 and NH4NO3. The percentage increase in lotus and clover shoot growth was greater than that of root growth when KNO3 was added within a week of transplanting. Increases in growth by both species resulted from added nitrogen except with lotus when NaNO3 was applied where increased nitrogen fixation also contributed to increased growth. Weight and number of effective nodules on both species were increased with 3.33 mg N per plant as KNO3 but nitrogen fixation was not affected. Addition of 13.33 mg N as NaNO3 reduced weight and number of effective nodules in both species and also nitrogen fixation by lotus. KNO3 increased growth and nodulation of both species when applied within one week after transplanting. Nodulated lotus plants responded to KNO3 by increasing growth but not nodulation. KNO3 appeared to affect infection and development of nodules on lotus and may affect the growth of existing nodules on clover.

    Notes: Summary Two field experiments were planted using different techniques for inoculation of soybeans. Three cultivers each belonging to a group of growth habit were inoculated by four methods in the first experiment. In the second one, two strains ofRhizobium japonicum (USDA 110 and 122) inoculated by other four methods, were compared on two indeterminate varieties, (Amsoy-71 and Williams). In experiment I, the Semidet. and Indet. lines nodulated significantly more than the Determinate one under any method; inoculating the furrow by either a solid mixture (peat plus sand) or a concentrated liquid broth of rhizobia gave the highest nodulation per plant. Inoculation of seeds and furrows by a peat inoculant were the best methods in Experiment II. No significant differences between the two rhizobia strains were found with respect to nodule biomass in any of the two Indet varieties. The correlation coefficients between either nodules mass or numbers and yields of grain, contents and productions of proteins were highly significant.
