    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: A pancake-shaped concretion from Ship Harbour Lake, a small freshwater lake in eastern Nova Scotia (now named Lake Charlotte) is part of collection sent to the National Museum of Canada by Mr. R. A. Logan, of the Pan American Airvays. These concretions are of similar to the well-known marine concretions with a composition similar to wad. These are known only from abyssmal depths of the sea in the red clay deposits, while the present concretions occur in very shallow lake waters. They should be of interest to geologists, who may be concerned with the rather difficult problem which some concretions raise of distinguishing between concretions of syngenitic and epigenetic origin.

In:  Supplement to: Chumley, James (1932): Report on the deposit-samples collected during the "Michael Sars" North Atlantic Deep-Sea Expedition 1910. In: Report on the scientific results of the "Michael Sars" north Atlantic deep-sea expedition 1910, carried out under the auspices of the Norwegian government and the superintendence of Sir John Murray, K.C.B., and Dr. Johan Hjort. The Trustees of the Bergen museum, Bergen. Volume 1, 12 pp, https://doi.org/10.5962/bhl.title.11322
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The deposit-samples and rock specimens brought home by the "Michael Sars" were received in the Challenger Office shortly after the return of the expedition, and upon examination the rock specimens proved to be so numerous and to offer so many points of interest that Dr. B. N. Peach, F. R. S., was requested to report upon them. A brief note on his results appeared in "The Depths of the Ocean" (London, Macmillan, 1912), pp. 202-209, and his detailed report was published in the Proc. Roy. Soc. Edin., vol. XXXII., pp. 262—291, 1912. When the author met Dr. Hjort in London in May 1914 he desired me to prepare, for publication in the series of Reports on the scientific Results of the "Michael Sars" North Atlantic Expedition, descriptions of the deposit samples, including for each station a brief summary of Dr. Peach's observations on the rock-specimens obtained. The accompanying Report shows that the "Michael Sars" expedition has made a notable contribution to our knowledge regarding the materials covering the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Description: We find the interpretation of the genus Aristida by BEAUVOIS in his work Essai d’une nouvelle Agrostographie on pag. 33. Aristida lanata is the only species mentioned by him and the genus is figured on Pl. VIII. fig. X. This figure is a rather rough sketch and represents Aristida ciliata DESF.. In the figures b and c there is a well-developed column and the central awn is plumose, the articulation between lemma and column is omitted or overlooked. Aristida lanata, as mentioned by BEAUVOIS, is quite different from the A. lanata, described by FORSKÅL, where all the awns are plumose and the glumes are quite different. BEAUVOIS tells us that among all the Aristidas he has found in herbaria, this one is the only species where the central awn differs in structure from the lateral ones, the central awn being a true awn (arista) and the lateral ones „setae” only. The genus with these characters he accepted as the genuine Aristida and hence described the genus with the 3 awns of equal structure as new under the name of Chaetaria. This interpretation of LINNÉ’S genus Aristida was however wrong. LINNNAEUS based the genus on the Aristida adscensionis, the only species mentioned in the description in the year 1753. Both genera Aristida and Chaetaria are quite identic. Among the 25 species enumerated by BEAUVOIS under Chaetaria, we find 4 species with a? and 2 species, A. capensis and A. vestita, do not belong to the genus Chaetaria (BEAUVOIS could not study them or he overlooked the articulation of the column). Aristida capensis has plumose awns and belongs to the section Stipagrostis and A. vestita belongs to the section Arthratherum. BEAUVOIS figures two species of his genus Chaetaria (Plate VII. fig. V. and VI.). The first figure is Aristida stricta MICHX., the second is Chaetaria capillaris, the name is a misprint for C. capillacea based on Aristida capillacea of LAMARK. TRINIUS accepted in the year 1824 the genus of BEAUVOIS as a section of the genus Aristida in his Dissertatio botanica De Graminibus Unifloris et Sesquifloris on p. 175 with the diagnosis: „Perianthium cum setis non articulatum”. This section is also accepted in this work, it contains about 200 species, North America and Mexico have about 47 species, Central and South America have about 58 species. The West Indian Islands are comparatively rich in species, about 15. In the Old World we find but one species in Europe, the continent of Africa has about 38 species, Madagascar and the adjacent islands have 7 representatives. There are known 2 species from Nova Caledonia and 29 species on the continent of Australia. Asia has about 10 species.

Description: Euscopus chinensis n. sp.\nIn the collection of the Leyden Museum I found a specimen of Euscopus, of which the identity was hitherto not clear to me; but as it was a single female I was not able to made a description of it. Between the specimen of the British Museum, my colleague Mr CHINA was so kind to send to me, I found two males and one female, of which I am sure they are belonging to the same species.\nThe species is rather closely allied to E. rufipes St\xc3\xa5l and (still more) to E. vittiventris Walk, having the black colour markings as in the second species, but the ground colour of the hemielytra and the basal fascia to the pronotum are red, not yellow. The red longitudinal fascia to the venter is in some of the specimen indicated, but not always distinct. The structure of the ultimate ventral segment is somewhat like that of E. vittiventris Walk., but the incisure of the posterior border is more distinctly indicated, and shows a small tooth in the middle.\nLength of the \xe2\x99\x82: 81/4\xe2\x80\x9482/3 mm; of the \xe2\x99\x80: 91/2\xe2\x80\x9410 mm. Description: Since the publication in 1908 of the \xe2\x80\x9eCatalogue syst\xc3\xa9matique des Mollusques" by R. HORST and M. M. SCHEPMAN, the collection of \'s Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie has attained a not unimportant extension, so that since long this catalogue is no more up to date. After the revision of the genus Bursa, which resulted into the addition to the collection of a great deal of hitherto unidentified material and which brought about several changes in the catalogue, it seemed necessary to me, to edit a new catalogue of this genus, and it is my intention to publish such a list every time when a new part of the collection has been revised.\nIn order to give this catalogue a more general value, I have included as far as possible, all the true species of Bursa which are mentioned in literature, also those of which we do not possess any material in the Leyden Museum, moreover I added the commonly used synonyma. In the classification of the species I followed principally the systems proposed by A. H. COOKE and W. H. DALL.\nAll the revised material is written on a card-catalogue, in which the specimens from the same locality and collector, as far as they are kept dry, bear the same letter; concerning the material preserved in liquor the number of the bottle is given instead. I have inserted these letters or numbers in the list below, followed by a number indicating how many specimens we possess from that locality. After the localities the names of the collectors are mentioned, in cases when the locality or the name of the collector is unknown I have put an interrogation mark.\nGenus Bursa Bolten, 1798.\nRanella Lamarck, 1812.

Description: A look at the key to the species of the genus Lepidodactylus in Boulenger\'s Catalogue of Lizards (I, 1885, p. 162) shows at once that the species are placed in two groups differing in the development of the inner digit. This was first noticed by STEJNEGER (1899, p. 800) who transferred L. crepuscularis (Bav.), L. ceylonensis Blgr. and L. aurantiacus (Bedd.) to the genus Hemiphyllodactylus Blkr. At the same time he described a new species, H. leucostictus, from the Hawaii Islands. The different authors on Asiatic herpetology did not notice this publication as it chiefly dealt with the land-reptiles of the Sandwich-Islands. The attention was again attracted to it by TAYLOR (1922, p. 65) who (1918, p. 237) described a new species, H. insularis, from the Philippine Islands. While working on a revision of the Indo-Australian Gekkonidae, I arrived at the same conclusion as STEJNEGER and TAYLOR. Moreover I (1931, p. 11) am of the opinion that the following species must be united: H. typus Blkr., H. crepuscularis (Bav.), H. ceylonensis (Blgr.), H. leucostictus Stejn., H. insularis Tayl. and H. margarethae Brongersma. Perkins (1903, p. 367) already placed H. leucostictus in the synonymy of Lepidodactylus crepuscularis. He did not state any reasons and I think he was wrong to return the species to the genus Lepidodactylus. The resemblance between H. typus (Spathoscalabotes) and L. crepuscularis was noticed by WERNER (1899, p. 374) but he did not unite them. Hemiphyllodactylus aurantiacus (Bedd.) is considered by me to be a distinct species.\nDr. M. A. SMITH (London), working independently, reached the same conclusion (in litt.). Dr. SMITH is of the opinion, that some other species from the asiatic mainland must be referred to this genus. These species

Description: Introduction.\nThe measurements given in this note and following notes are expressed in hundredths of length and are made by means of dividers. They are taken about in the same way as used by the American authors.\nThe length is measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the last vertebra.\nThe depth is taken at the deepest part of the body, the depth of caudal peduncle halfway the peduncle. Length of head from tip of snout to the upper end of the posterior edge of operculum. Length of snout from its tip to the anterior margin of the orbit. Width of interorbital space is measured with the dividers pinched tightly between the bony orbits. Diameter of orbit is measured longitudinally. Distance from snout to D 1 from the tip of the snout to the insertion of the first dorsal spine, distance from snout to D 2 and A from the tip of the snout to the insertion of the first ray of D 2 and A. Length of caudal peduncle from the insertion of the last anal ray to the end of the last vertebra. Length of the caudal fin from the end of the last vertebra to the end of the longest caudal ray. Length of P and V from the insertion of the fin to the end of the longest ray. Length of D 1 from the insertion of the first spine to the insertion of the last spine, not to the end of the membrane! Length of D 2 and A from the insertion of the first ray to the insertion of the last ray of each fin.\nThe last ray of D 2 and A, which is mostly split to the base, is counted as one ray, in the same way the first ray of D 2 and A, which is mostly unbranched, is counted as one ray.

Description: In 1904 two Teiid lizards from Surinam were described by\nVAN\nLIDTH DE JEUDE who named them: Arthrosaura versteegii and Prionodactylus kockii. Of the latter species I (1928) was able to show that it did not belong to the genus Prionodactylus but that it was also an Arthrosaura and that A. dorsistriata L. M\xcf\x8bLLER (1923, p. 147) was a synonym of it. The status of the different Arthrosaura-species is again discussed by Ch, E. and M. D. BURT (1931, p. 312\xe2\x80\x94313) in a very interesting study on the South-American lizards in the American Museum of Natural History. At the same time these authors describe a new species, Arthrosaura tatei, from Venezuela, so that they refer four species (reticulata, versteegii, kockii, tatei) to this genus.\nDealing with the two species described by\nVAN LITH DE JEUDE\n(1904, p. 89, 91) the authors write on p. 313: "It is possible that future study will show A. kockii to be a synonym of this co-extensively distributed A. versteegii" and: "It appears that three of the species of Arthrosaura (versteegii, kockii, and reticulata) are practically synonymous in details of scutellation and proportion, although future work may prove this to be untrue." On p. 312 the probable identity of Pantodactylus concolor Tschudi (1847, p. 48) is discussed: "The description of Pantodactylus concolor Tschudi (1847) from Northern Brazil is very inadequate, but in every point that is given its characters agree with those of the more recently described Arthrosaura versteegii of Van Lidth de Jeude (1904)" and on p. 313: "In view of these data and the geographical locality of the forms concerned, it appears that the two species may be identical".\nThese statements made it worth while to re-examine the types of

Description: PART II.\nSubordo: Anisoptera.\nFam. Aeschnidae.\nSubfam. Gomphinae.\nGenus: Gomphoides Selys.\nThe little material of the interesting family of Gomphinae we know from this island, is represented by a few specimens of the genus Gomphoides. In the year 1929 on July 13 and some days afterwards, two specimens, one male and one female of different species were taken by myself on a small river in the mountains near Mt. St. Benedict. Since these captures no Gomphoides was seen again, all the time I stayed in Trinidad. Mr. E. B. WILLIAMSON in Michigan, from whom I got information when determining my Gomphoides-specimens, wrote me in this connection, that he was just working at a revision of the genus and not able (March 17, 1930) to name my Trinidad specimens. About one year afterwards in a letter dated Jan. 13, 1931, Mr. WILLIAMSON wrote me, that two Gomphoides-specimens were received from Trinidad from the collector Belmontes in Brasso, a male in a consignment for his own collection and a female in a collection consigned to Dr. WALKER in Toronto, which specimen was forwarded to him by Dr. WALKER. In his last letter of April 6, 1932, Mr. WILLIAMSON noted on the Gomphoides-specimens: "As to Trinidad Gomphoides, I think there are two species in all the material to date. I have no reason to think the Trinidad Gomphoides represent anything new, so I believe naming of the scanty material can well await the completion of my study if that meets with your approval".

Description: The origin of the present paper is based on two large collections of Odonata, recently made in Trinidad. The first one is my own collection brought home from my stay in the island in July and August 1929, containing several hundreds of specimens from different localities. The second one is that of Dr. E. M. WALKER in Toronto Ontario, generously sent to me for examination. It also contains many hundreds of individuals, collected in the island in Sangre Grande by G. BELMONTES in 1930 and 1931.\nLateron in 1931 and \'32 two sendings of the same collector were received for my collection, by which it was enlarged by some rare and not yet represented species. It may be interesting to know that duplicates of most of the species in my collection are handed over to \'s Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden.\nIn the following account I have attempted to gather up all notes and indications of all Odonata which have been recorded from Trinidad, or which are otherwise known to me to occur in this country. Therefore it must be understood as a foundation, by which future discoveries will prove to be facilitated and as it makes our view on the fauna of this island more complete, a useful contribution to our poor knowledge of the Lesser Antilles.\nAttention must be called to the important results of E. B. WILLIAMSON, who visited the island in 1912 during a collecting trip in the West Indies with his father the late L. A. WILLIAMSON and B. J. RAINEY.\nA rich collection of Odonata was brought home by these gentlemen, of which since many particularities have been recorded. The first contribution to the Odonate-fauna of Trinidad was furnished by J. H. HART in the

Description: We find the interpretation of the genus Aristida by BEAUVOIS in his work Essai d\xe2\x80\x99une nouvelle Agrostographie on pag. Aristida lanata, as mentioned by BEAUVOIS, is quite different from the A. lanata, described by FORSK\xc3\x85L, where all the awns are plumose and the glumes are quite different. BEAUVOIS tells us that among all the Aristidas he has found in herbaria, this one is the only species where the central awn differs in structure from the lateral ones, the central awn being a true awn (arista) and the lateral ones \xe2\x80\x9esetae\xe2\x80\x9d only. The genus with these characters he accepted as the genuine Aristida and hence described the genus with the 3 awns of equal structure as new under the name of Chaetaria. This interpretation of LINN\xc3\x89\xe2\x80\x99S genus Aristida was however wrong. 175 with the diagnosis: \xe2\x80\x9ePerianthium cum setis non articulatum\xe2\x80\x9d.\nThis section is also accepted in this work, it contains about 200 species, North America and Mexico have about 47 species, Central and South America have about 58 species.
