Description: In preparing the volume of the Gobioidea in M. Weber and L. F. de Beaufort: The Fishes of the Indo-Australian Archipelago, several described species, collected in the Indo-Australian Archipelago or its surroundings, were not clear to me. Of a number of these the description was distinct enough to see what was meant with such a new species, but there were several species which I could not recognize from their description. Bleeker described a large number of new species, but, unfortunately, several of his descriptions are too vague to recognize the species. So many authors had described several species which proved, after comparison with Bleeker\'s type specimens or descriptions made after his types, to be either closely allied, or identical with species already described by Bleeker. In order to see whether the described species of authors were synonyms of already described species, or to reexamine the types in order to enlarge the descriptions, I visited several Museums and other Institutions in the United States of N.\nAmerica, Honolulu, Australia, Philippines, Singapore and British India.\nDuring a stay in Batavia, I had the opportunity to make colour sketches of freshly-caught specimens and to go out and collect specimens myself.\nMy visit to the different countries mentioned was made possible by a grant of the "Pieter Langerhuizen Lambertuszoon fonds", endowed by the "Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen".\nDuring these visits I received great help and friendship of the staff of the Museums and Institutions, for which I am very thankful. Especially I am obliged to the following Directors of Museums and other Institutions and members of their staff:

Description: During the stay of the Nica-detachment at Port Dickson, Malaya, in March 1946, a small collection of fishes was made, which was presented by Major Dr. L. D. Brongersma to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. Besides these fishes from Malaya, two specimens of flying fishes from the Indian Ocean were presented.\nThe collection from Port Dickson was pretty small, 45 specimens in total, belonging to 25 species. It gives therefore by no means an idea of the fishfauna of Malaya. The fishfauna of the Westcoast of Malaya is still imperfectly known, so even this small collection can contribute to the knowledge of this fauna.\nThe species are arranged according to the system followed by M. Weber & L. F. de Beaufort in their Fishes of the Indo-Australian Archipelago.\nThe length of the specimens is the total length.\nPORT DICKSON, MALAYA, MARCH 1946 Stolephorus indicus (v. Hasselt) 2 specimens of 39 and 45 mm.\nPlotosus canius H.B. 1 specimen of 41 mm.\nMuraena (Gymnothorax) meleagris Shaw 1 specimen of 157 mm.\nSyngnathoides biaculeatus (Bl.) 4 specimens of 127-141 mm.\nHippocampus kuda Blkr. 1 specimen of 136 mm from tip of coronet to end of tail.\nZenarchopterus quadrimaculatus Mohr

Description: During his paleontological searches in Java, the late Prof. Eug. Dubois collected a number of fossil fish remains. His searches were instituted mainly in pleistocene deposits, and as far as I am aware these fish remains were the first of their kind to be collected in Java in strata of that age. This, and the fact that Dubois (1907, 1908) referred to these fish in two preliminary papers, gives this collection additional interest.\nIn the first of his preliminary papers, Dubois (1907, p. 455) mentions the following fish: Anabas microcephalus, Clarias magur, Ophiocephalus, Carcharias gangeticus.\nIn the second paper, Dubois (1908, p. 1239) mentions that at least seven species of freshwater fish are represented in his collection, viz., Anabas microcephalus, Clarias magur, and four other Silurids, several species of Ophiocephalids.\nA second collection was made in the Trinil beds by the Selenka Expedition, and the fish remains were described by Hennig (1911). This author identified the remains only to family or genus, and he did not succeed in identifying the species. Therefore, it is considered to be worth while to reexamine the remains collected by Dubois, and to check his identifications. In several cases it proved that the identifications by Dubois were correct.\nHowever, the names used by him prove to be synonyms of names now in use.\nComparisons were made with recent skeletons, as this not only is the

Description: Through the courtesy of Mr. K. van Vuure, officer of the Fisheries at Pasoeroean, Java, the Leiden Museum received a very interesting collection of fishes from the eastern part of Java.\nThe collection was made in November 1938 and contained both freshwater and marine species. On a joined list of each lot the vernacular name was given and the exact locality, giving the village (desa), district, regency (regentschap) and residence (residentie); these topographical names are stated in this paper as desa, distr., reg. and res. The vernacular names are partly Javanese, partly Madurese, indicated as Jav. and Mad.\nThe fishes are arranged according to the system of G\xc3\xbcnther\'s Catalogue of Fishes.\nEpinephelus merra Bl., 1 specimen, desa Tandjoeng Petjinan, distr. Description: Body elongate, high, strongly compressed, covered with 25\xe2\x80\x9430 scales, ctenoid on most parts of the body, cycloid on nape, breast and belly. Head compressed, scaled above behind the eyes with large scales; the first unpaired one in the median line behind eye is not much enlarged. Operculum scaled with large scales. Nape without fleshy crest. Bony interorbital less than 1 eye-diameter. Maxillary prolonged to behind the eye or not prolonged (sexual dimorphism?). Mouth oblique. Teeth in several rows, outer row a little enlarged, some teeth caninoid. Tongue rounded to truncate. A number of short mucous canals radiate under eye, 1\xe2\x80\x942 longitudinal mucous canals over cheeks. One open pore on each side medially of posterior nostril, 3 in interorbital space, one behind each eye, some along posterior margin of preoperculum. Gillopenings extend to a little below base of P. Isthmus moderate. Dorsal fins separate. D. 1 VI; D. 2 I. 6\xe2\x80\x947; A. I. 6\xe2\x80\x947. V. united, oblong, under P. P. without free rays. C. rounded, as long as or shorter than head.\nType of genus: Lophogobius chrysosoma Blkr.\nThis genus is closely allied to Stigmatogobius and Pseudogobiopsis, but differs in the highly compressed form of the body. In its form of body it is allied to Lophogobius Gill, so that Bleeker brought his species chrysosoma to Lophogobius. Having seen the type species of Lophogobius, Gobius crista galli C. & V. = cyprinoides Pallas, I am certain that Lophogobius Gill is quite another genus, for it has a crest on the nape and the median part of head behind the eyes is naked.\nCyprinogobius is closely allied to Ostreogobius Whitley, type species Gillichthys australis Ogilby, but differs from the description of this species
