    Description: Fuel efficiency in aeronautics, for fuel conservation in general as well as for its effect on commercial aircraft operating economics is considered. Projects of the Aircraft Energy Efficiency Program related to propulsion are emphasized. These include: (1) engine component improvement, directed at performance improvement and engine diagnostics for prolonged service life; (2) energy efficient engine, directed at proving the technology base for the next generation of turbofan engines; and (3) advanced turboprop, directed at advancing the technology of turboprop powered aircraft to a point suitable for commercial airline service. Progress in these technology areas is reported.

    Description: Two unique meteorites were identified by means of a mineralogical examination of the smaller-sized Yamato achondrites. Yamato-74130 is the most iron-rich ureilite with Na, Cr-rich augite instead of pigeonite. Yamato-74160 was extensively recrystallized, but the composition and proportion of olivine, orthopyroxene, augite, and plagioclase is consistent with LL7 chondrites. ALHA77005 is a unique achondrite with olivine, possibly three pyroxene assemblages, and maskelynite. These meteorites provide evidence that there may be other 'thermalized' asteroids than the howardite parent body. Detailed petrologic descriptions of the unique achondrites, recrystallized diogenite Yamato-74013, and the rapidly cooled eucrite Yamato-74450 with pyroxene phenocrysts are given. It is inferred from the bulk chemistry and the mineralogical reexamination of Yamato-75028 that it is composed of the H5-type clasts and chondrule-rich H(L)3-like matrix with the H5 fragments. A close relationship in the collisional evolution of some asteroids with these materials is inferred.

    Description: Data have been accumulated from a series of studies in which men have been subjected to weightlessness in orbital space flight for periods of up to 12 weeks. These data are used to predict the long term consequences of weightlessness upon the skeletal system. Space flight induced a loss of calcium which accelerated exponentially from about 50 mg/d at the end of 1 week to approx. 300 mg/d at the end of 12 weeks. The hypercalciuria reached a constant level within 4 weeks while fecal calcium losses continued to increase throughout the period of exposure. This apparent diminution of gastrointestinal absorptive efficiency was accompanied by a slight decline in the plasma level of parathyroid hormone and a slight elevation in the plasma level of calcium and phosphorus. Although losses in mineral from the calcaneus were closely correlated with the calcium imbalance, no changes were detected in the mineral mass of the ulna and radius. From the data presented it is concluded that the process of demineralization observed in space flight is more severe than would be predicted on the basis of observations in immobilized, bed rested, or paralyzed subjects. It is, moreover, suggested that the process may not be totally reversible.

    Description: This review describes the renal-endocrine mechanisms related to the early losses of fluid-electrolytes from the body during weightlessness as well as their contribution to longer term adaptation of fluid-electrolyte balance. The hypotheses presented were generated by a systematic analysis of body fluid and renal dynamics observed under conditions of actual and simulated spaceflight. These have increased our understanding of the effects of acute headward fluid shifts on renal excretion, the factors promoting excess sodium excretion and the regulation of extracellular fluid composition.

    Description: The third in a series of Spacelab Mission Development tests was conducted at the Johnson (correction of Johnston) Space Center as a part of the development of Life Sciences experiments for the Space Shuttle era. The latest test was a joint effort of the Ames Research and Johnson Space Centers and utilized animals and men for study. The basic objective of this test was to evaluate the operational concepts planned for the Space Shuttle life science payloads program. A three-man crew (Mission Specialist and two Payload Specialists) conducted 26 experiments and 12 operational tests, which were selected for this 7-day mission simulation. The crew lived on board a simulated Orbiter/Spacelab mockup 24 hr a day. The Orbiter section contained the mid deck crew quarters area, complete with sleeping, galley and waste management provisions. The Spacelab was identical in geometry to the European Space Agency Spacelab design, complete with removable rack sections and stowage provisions. Communications between the crewmen and support personnel were configured and controlled as currently planned for operational shuttle flights. For this test a Science Operations Remote Center was manned at the Ames Research Center and was managed by simulated Mission Control and Payload Operation Control Centers at the Johnson Space Center. This paper presents the test objectives, description of the facilities and test program, and the results of this test.

    Description: The weathering of silicate rocks and minerals, an important concern of geologists and geochemists for many years, traditionally has been approached from strictly physical and chemical points of view. Biological effects were either unrecognized, ignored, or were mentioned in passing to account for such phenomena as the accumulation of organic matter in sediments or the generation of reducing environments. A major exception occurred in soil science where agricultural scientists, studying the factors important in the development of soils and their ability to nourish and sustain various crops, laid the foundation for much of what is known of the biological breakdown of silicate rocks and minerals. The advent of the space age accelerated the realization that many environmental problems and geochemical processes on Earth can only be understood in terms of ecosystems. This in turn, spurred renewed interest and activity among modem biologists, geologists and soil scientists attempting to unravel the intimate relations between biology and the weathering of silicate rocks and minerals of the earth's surface.

    Description: Ordinary Rayleigh-Schroudinger perturbation theory with Moller-Plesset (RSMP) partitioning is used to calculate second- and third-order correlation corrections to the CHF polarizability and dipole moment of the water molecule by a finite-field procedure. Pade approximants are found to be useful in accelerating the convergence of the property perturbation expansions. Field-induced polarization functions suitable for polarizability calculations are determined. The average polarizability calculated, neglecting vibrational averaging, with Dunning's (9s5p/4s-4s2p/2s) contracted GTO basis set augmented by field-induced lslp2d/lp polarization functions is within 3 per cent of the experimental result. Correlation corrections to the dipole moment and polarizability of the water molecule calculated by the finite-field RSMP and single + double excitation CI(SDCI) methods for the same basis set are found to be in close agreement. The RSMP approach has the advantages of being size-consistent and of being capable of greater efficiency than the SCDI method. Comparative calculations carried out using Epstein-Nesbet partitioning show that through third order RSEN correlation perturbation expansions for the dipole moment and polarizability are less rapidly convergent than RSMP expansions. However, reasonable accord with RSMP results can be achieved by using Pade approximants to accelerate the convergence of RSEN energy perturbation expansions. The convergence of RSMP property correlation expansions based on the zeroth-order uncoupled-Hartree-Fock (UCHF) and coupled-Hartree-Fock (CHF) approximations are compared through third order. Whereas the CHF + RSMP expansions are for practical purposes fully converged, the UCHF + RSMP expansions are not adequately converged.

    Description: A research data-gathering system being developed for inflight measurement of direct and nearby lightning strike characteristics is described. Wideband analog recorders used to record the lightning scenario are supplemented with high-sample-rate digital transient recorders with augmented memory capacity for increased time resolution of specific times of interest. The endless-loop data storage technique employed by the transient recorders circumvents problems associated with oscilloscopic techniques and allows unattended operation. System integrity and immunity from induced effects is accomplished by fiber-optics signal-transmission links, shielded system enclosures, and the use of a dynamotor for power system isolation.

The short term prediction method is still a manual method which relies mainly on a number of continuous field strength recordings and on the forecaster's ability to interpret the recordings and to combine this information with all available solar-geophysical data.     Description: The Apollo Soyuz Test Program is described. A modification of the Skylab furnace was developed for the ASTP mission that had a maximum temperature of 1200 C, a programmed cool down to give more uniform growth rates, and a He quench system to shorten the time required to reach allowable touch temperature. The Space Processing Applications Rocket (SPAR) program was initiated to provide some continuity in flight experimentation. Liquid mixing, immiscible alloy solidification, composite materials, bubbles and dispersed particles during solidification, and containerless processing techniques were studied in the SPAR program.

    Description: Using a partially nuclear excited xenon flashlamp to pump an iodine laser, laser pulse shapes were analyzed with and without nuclear flashlamp augmentation. The pulse shapes indicate that the deposition of nuclear energy is equally as effective as electrical energy deposition in producing laser pulse energy output. The amplification of the E-beam pumped CF3I was measured at pressures of several atmospheres. Preliminary data shows that, for a part of the iodine laser pulse, amplification of almost a factor of two is measured. This measurement indicates that the gain in an E-beam pumped CF3I is an order of magnitude greater than in the coaxial laser tube.

    Description: A model for an indirectly nuclear pumped laser experiment was developed. The apparatus consists of the usual cylindrical neutron moderator enclosing a gas filled quartz cell. The quartz cell in this case has two concentric compartments; the larger output compartment is filled with He-3 and fluorescent gases which are coupled radiatively to the inner compartment which is filled with a lasing gas for efficient optical pumping. The fluorescent gas in this study was a mixture of Ar, Kr and F2. Perfluoroalkyliodide was chosen as the lasant material of the inner compartment. The degree of photoabsorption in the lasant gas was calculated. The kinetic efficiencies of various gas combinations in the outer fluorescence tube were then evaluated in order to maximize the fluorescence output in the iodine pump band.

    Description: The recent experiment and theoretical results obtained for noble gas nuclear laser systems are presented. It is shown that the noble gas lasers are among the easiest systems to pump by nuclear excitation and as a result, all of the noble gases except He have lased under nuclear excitation. The noble gas systems are not ideal for high-power applications but they do give valuable insight into the operation and pumping mechanisms associated with nuclear lasers. At present, the Ar-Xe system is the best noble gas candidate for (U-235)F6 pumping. It appears that the quenching of Ar-Xe lasing is a result of the fluorine and not the uranium or fission fragments themselves. Thus, to achieve lasing with UF6, a fluorine compatible system must be found.

    Description: The vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy system and MCFIG capsule were filled with a He-3:Ar:Xe:Br (534:195:12:6) torr mixture and irradiatied by a CW flux of 17 x 10 to the 11th power neutrons/sq cm sec. The XeBr* emission was observed, but the Br2 emission normally observed in argon-bromine mixtures predominates. This spectrum is typical of these mixtures with XeBr* probably peaking with 0.1 percent Bromine in 2 atmosphere argon with 2 percent xenon. The addition of a large partial pressure of He-3 produces additional unknowns. The typical vibrational structure of XeBr* was not observed. Sapphire emission continuums were present. Energy deposition was 0.43 watts and the capsule output under the XeBr* and Br2 bands was 0.0016 watts, giving an efficiency of 0.37 percent.

    Description: The rate at which UF6 decomposes into UF5 and UF4 was determined as a function of neutron fluence. To study UF6 decomposition rate, an absorption cell for VUV and the associated VUV spectroscopy system was used to measure UF6 while under irradiation. The cell contains 50 torr of UF6 at room temperature to insure that the UF6 is in a gaseous state. It is shown that by determining the absorption coefficient below 2100A for UF6, above 2100A for F2, and at 4100A for cell degradation, UF6 decomposition can be measured at a neutron flux of 10 to the 12th power/sq cm for 72 continuous hours.

    Description: The results of a study on the CW nuclear pumped lasing of the He-Ne system are presented. Preliminary experiments measured single pass gain for the 6328.2A laser transition at neutron fluxes up to 1 x 10 to the 14th power neutrons/sq cm sec. Peak gain for a 300 torr (He-3)-Ne (5:1 mixture) was found to be 8.84 dB/meter at a 2 x 10 to the 12th power neutrons/sq cm sec neutron flux. Further experiments measured the gain in the flux region from one million to 2 x 10 to the 12th power neutrons/sq cm sec. In addition, gain vs. probe laser intensity at various neutron fluxes was measured. These measurements resulted in the construction of a laser cavity and the subsequent CW nuclear pumped lasing at 6328.2A in (He-3)-Ne. Experiments were also carried out on the 3.39 micrometer superradiant line in (He-3)-Ne. On three separate occasions, at two different facilities, lasing was observed. Although (He-3)-Ne was found to have the lowest threshold for lasing found so far, it also had the lowest output power on the order of tens of microwatts.

    Description: The He-3 (n,p)T reaction was examined as an energy source for a CO2 laser. For this purpose He-3 was added to a functioning CO2 electrically excited laser. Initially the laser was run electrically with 12 torr total pressure. The gas mixture was 1:1:8, CO2:N2:He. At zero reactor power, the laser was tested in place next to the core of the Georgia Tech. Research Reactor. After verification of laser action He-3 was added to the system. The He-3 partial pressures of 10 torr, 50 torr, and 300 torr were added in three separate reactor runs. Reactor power ranged from zero to 5 million watts, which corresponds to a peak flux of 10 to the 14th power/sq cm. At reactor powers greater than 10 kW, gain of up to 30 percent was shown. However, indications are this may be due to gamma excitation rather than caused by the He-3 (n,p)T reaction. These results do agree with the data of past CO2 nuclear pumped laser experiments.

    Description: The mechanism of excitation of laser gases by fast ions (triton, proton, or fission fragments) and especially any role UF6 might play in radiative deexcitation of these gases were investigated. Population densities of excited important for laser action were obtained. Nuclear pumped CW-laser systems, especially He-Ne and CO2, were studied using steady state reactors. It was demonstrated that He-Ne lases in a CW-mode with nuclear pumping at both the red and the infrared transition. The infrared transition was observed to be superradiant.

    Description: Service problems encountered on the F-4 aircraft showed that the environmental qualification requirements for the UHF blade antenna were not adequate. Although the individual environmental levels were stringent enough, only combined environmental testing could duplicate the conditions in which service problems occurred. Techniques for applying static side load simultaneously with vibration and temperature were developed. The combined environment testing was instrumental in the rapid assessment of antenna modifications and resulted in a final configuration which proved satisfactory in service. A need to include combined environmental testing for qualification of blade antennas was established.

    Description: Turbine generator (T-G) units with low tuned concrete foundations were investigated experimentally during both startup and normal operating conditions. The dynamic response of the turbine generators and their foundation systems were characterized by resonance curves obtained during the startup transient and by vibration mode shapes at the normal operating condition. No severe resonance at the fundamental frequencies of the system was observed. The deflection or displacement of the foundation pedestal does not lead to unacceptable T-G vibration. The experimental results are compared and discussed with some previous theoretical studies.

    Description: The vibration environment within air conditioner rotating machinery referred to as an air cycle machine (ACM) was investigated to effectively increase ACM reliability. To assist in the selection of design changes which would result in improved ACM performance, various design modifications were incorporated into a baseline ACM configuration. For each design change, testing was conducted with the best balance achieveable (baseline) and with various degrees of unbalance. Relationships between unbalance (within the context of design changes) and the parameters associated with design goals were established.     Description: The high closing speed of 57km/s between the spacecraft and Halley poses special problems in the design of the required meteoroid protection. A double wall structure with a total thickness equal to 0.1 to 1 times the diameter of the largest meteoroid encountered is sufficient to stop that meteoroid. However, the unusually high number of meteoroid impacts on the Halley probe will cause significant erosion of the outer wall so that failure of the second wall is more likely to occur from a small meteoroid passing through a previously created hole in the outer wall and then penetrating the second wall. Calculations of the shielding required based on this failure mode, show that a double wall structure must actually have a total thickness 1.2 to 7.3 times the diameter of the largest meteoroid encountered, depending on the size distribution of the meteoroids.

A Costas loop capable of demodulating BPSK signals with data rates up to 1 Msps was designed and constructed and its Doppler tracking performance with respect to a Block 3 receiver was tested at the Telecommunications Development Laboratory (TDL). The compatibility of suppressed carrier signalling with the current radiometric system, specifically Doppler tracking and ranging, was investigated. The experimental results obtained to-date with respect to Doppler tracking are presented.

    Description: The closed-loop conical-scan (conscan) technique has proven to be a useful method for pointing the DSN antennas more accurately than is possible by open-loop methods. As presently implemented, the antenna beam is scanned about the received signal direction by physical movement of the antenna. While straightforward, this approach has at least two disadvantages. Firstly, because of structural distortions, finite angle encoder resolution, and drive servo response, the actual antenna beam direction only approximates the commanded beam direction. Secondly, because of the large mass moved during scan, the rate of scan is severely restricted. If there are significant gain or signal level variations during a scan period, the conscan system interprets these variations as antenna pointing error. Both of these disadvantages would be alleviated in an inertialess conscan system in which the beam scanning was performed electronically. Recently, standard JPL antenna feedhorn software was upgraded to calculate, among other things, asymmetric corrugated horn radiation patterns of the type that would be needed for electronic beam scan. The required horn excitation is discussed and the results were described.

    Description: The HYBRIDHORN computer program was developed to serve as an item of general purpose antenna feedhorn design and analysis software. The formulation contains a small flare angle approximation which is subject to question for designs such as the S- and X-band feedhorn. Additionally, the original formulation did not allow azimuthal variation indexes other than unity. The HYBRIDHORN program was upgraded to correct both of these deficiencies. A large flare angle formulation was found. In the upgrade, all of the major program elements were converted to Univac 1108 compatible structured FORTRAN (SFTRAN) for ease of software maintenance. The small and large angle formulations are described and sample numerical results are presented.

Effects of quantizing after the loop filter (frequency quantization) or before (phase error quantization) are investigated. Constant Doppler or Doppler rate noiseless inputs are assumed.     Description: A candidate pre-Analog to Digital filter bandwidth versus data rate design is presented for the multimegabit telemetry demodulator/detector. The design is based on considerations of Analog to Digital bias, quantization errors, and automatic gain control effects, as well as the deleterious effects of filtering. Two methods of gain control of the input level to the analog to Digital converter are considered. The first method uses a particular value of gain, according to which bandwidth is selected. The second method uses a second narrowband noncoherent Automatic Gain Controls (in the LPF bandwidth) to attempt to keep the Analog to Digital input level constant. This second method reduces the bit error rate degradation slightly but appears to be more difficult to implement.

    Description: Ionization processes for the D region are reviewed. Levels of ionization range from the fairly steady rates produced through galactic cosmic rays to the large rates generated during solar flares and associated geomagnetic storms. The normal quiescent daytime D region is ionized by solar UV radiation available because of certain windows and solar X-rays, although this later source is generally weak. Cosmic rays are important roughly below 65 km. At night, stellar X-ray sources may be important along with precipitating electrons at high latitudes from the quiet magnetosphere. Solar flares can result in ionization rates due to X-rays, electrons, or nuclei which are greatly enhanced over quiet conditions. Typical ionization production rates from these various sources are illustrated.

    Description: The formation and variation of the ionosphere is addressed with regard to the ability to understand, specify, and predict the low and mid latitude E and F regions. A brief survey of prediction methods and techniques is given for long and short term variability in the E and F regions. It is indicated that the usefulness of theoretical models to predict electron density distribution in the low and mid latitude ionospheric E and F regions is limited by the ability to predict the parameters which enter the relevant equations; i.e., neutral atmospheric constituents, neutral and charged particle temperatures, neutral wind, electric fields, and ionizing sources such as solar (E sub uv) radiation and energetic particles. It is recommended that areas for research include improving knowledge of the input parameters and how they respond to changing solar and geophysical conditions.

    Description: The four Dimensional Ionospheric Model (4-D) is described. The 4-D integrates a wide variety of ionospheric data types into a consistent ionospheric specification. At each observing location, the 4-D reduces an entire electron density profile to four weighting coefficients.
