Some of the test results reviewed include the performance of the untreated or baseline quiet engines. In addition, test results are shown for various degrees and areas of engine acoustic treatment. Finally, the results obtained on a flight-type, acoustically treated nacelle added to one of the quiet engines is examined.

    Description: A significant effort within the NASA Quiet Engine Program has been devoted to acoustical evaluation at the Lewis Research Center noise test facility of a family of full-scale fans. This report, documents the noise results obtained with fan A - a 1.5-pressure-ratio, 1160-ft/sec-tip-speed fan. The fan is described and some aerodynamic operating data are given. Far-field noise around the fan was measured for a variety of configurations pertaining to acoustical treatment and over a range of operating conditions. Complete results of 1/3-octave band analysis of the data are presented in tabular form. Included also are power spectra and sideline perceived noise levels. Some representative 1/3-octave band data are presented graphically, and sample graphs of continuous narrow-band spectra are also provided.

    Description: Correct methods of accounting for atmospheric attenuation in band data requiring consideration of the integrated effect across the bands of the specific distance involved are discussed. Computer programs are provided that are understandable, efficient, and simple to use.     Description: Methods of handling one-third-octave band noise data originating from the outdoor full-scale fan noise facility and the engine acoustic facility at the Lewis Research Center are presented. Procedures for standardizing, retrieving, extrapolating, and reporting these data are explained. Computer programs are given which are used to accomplish these and other noise data analysis tasks. This information is useful as background for interpretation of data from these facilities appearing in NASA reports and can aid data exchange by promoting standardization.

    Description: Coherence measurements between fluctuating pressure in the combustor of a YF-102 turbofan engine and far-field acoustic pressure were made. The results indicated that a coherent relationship between the combustor pressure and far-field existed only at frequencies below 250 Hz, with the peak occurring near 125 Hz. The coherence functions and the far-field spectra were used to compute the combustor-associated far-field noise in terms of spectra, directivity, and acoustic power, over a range of engine operating conditions. The acoustic results so measured were compared with results obtained by conventional methods, as well as with various semiempirical predictions schemes. Examination of the directivity patterns indicated a peak in the combustion noise near 120 deg (relative to the inlet axis).

    Description: Initial studies on the design and testing of the quiet engine are described. The principal noise sources considered in the engine selection were the fan machinery noise and the fan and core jet noise. Nacelle acoustic linings are also mentioned. Fan and engine tests are discussed briefly and results indicate that it is possible to achieve or exceed noise reduction objectives of 15 to 20 PNdb below the levels of 707/DC-8 long-range transport aircraft.
