    Description: Visual absolute magnitudes of classical Cepheids, metal-poor RR Lyrae stars and short-period type II Cepheids have been determined with very high precision by combining a large number of old and new astrophysical data. Five independent methods (four observational and one theoretical) have been successfully used: (1) secular and statistical parallaxes; (2) moving-group parallaxes; (3) cluster main-sequence fitting; (4) the Baade-Wesselink method and its modifications; and (5) light-curve and velocity-curve fitting (the theoretical method). With these five adopted methods, the zero point of the galactic and extragalactic distance scale can be set on a relatively firm and self-consistent basis. Classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars now provide essentially identical distances to nearby galaxies: the distance modulus to the Large Magellanic Cloud is 18.5 and to the Small Magellanic Cloud is 18.8, both with an uncertainty of 0.1. The distance to the center of our Galaxy is 8.6 plus or minus 0.5 kiloparsecs. The major uncertainty in these values lies in the correction for interstellar extinction.

    Description: It is pointed out that the line profile coefficients for spontaneous and stimulated emission are identical in low-intensity radiation fields. In more intense radiation fields, however, the stimulated emission profiles in the radiative transfer equation and in the rate equations for the atomic level populations may differ from each other, owing to their different physical nature. A seeming discrepancy between the stimulated emission profiles of the usual semi-classical aproach and a recent quantum mechanical approach by Cooper et al. (1982), which should also be valid for intense 'broadband' fields, is discussed and shown to have negligible consequences for low-intensity radiation fields.

    Description: Observational evidence for Baryon symmetric (matter/antimatter) cosmology and future observational tests are reviewed. The most significant consequences of Baryon symmetric cosmology lie in the prediction of an observable cosmic background of gamma radiation from the decay of Pi(O)-mesons produced in nucleon-antinucleon annihilations. Equations for the prediction of the gamma ray background spectrum for the case of high redshifts are presented. The theoretical and observational plots of the background spectrum are shown to be in good agreement. Measurements of cosmic ray antiprotons and the use of high energy neutrino astronomy to look for antimatter elsewhere in the universe are also addressed. Previously announced in STAR as N83-10996

    Description: The presence of positive serial correlation (autocorrelation) in remotely sensed data results in an underestimate of the variance-covariance matrix when calculated using contiguous pixels. This underestimate produces an inflation in F statistics. For a set of Thematic Mapper Simulator data (TMS), used to test the ability to discriminate a known geobotanical anomaly from its background, the inflation in F statistics related to serial correlation is between 7 and 70 times. This means that significance tests of means of the spectral bands initially appear to suggest that the anomalous site is very different in spectral reflectance and emittance from its background sites. However, this difference often disappears and is always dramatically reduced when compared to frequency distributions of test statistics produced by the comparison of simulated training sets possessing equal means, but which are composed of autocorrelated observations.     Description: Radial velocities for 72 stars, most of them known or suspected binaries with F - K giant-supergiant primaries, are derived from Reticon spectra in the region 6005-6235 A at a scale of 7 km/s per diode. Cross-correlation of the spectra normally produces results accurate to better than 1.0 km/s. Eight new radial velocity variables are found (HR 2786, R Pup, HR 3291, HR 4451, HD 114520, HR 5667, HR 7014, and Nu1 Sgr). Improved orbits are determined for 15 known spectroscopic binaries, and provisional orbits are obtained for seven new spectroscopic binaries.

    Description: A complete automatic unsupervised classification approach has been developed to estimate the proportion of corn, soybeans, and other crops in a Landsat 5-by-6-nanometer segment. The technique involves extracting crop growth variables that are predictable from agromet models, it provides a signature extension not possible before. The technique has been applied in 3 years (1978-1980) for 56 segments and shows neither a year-to-year effect nor any geographic effect. The results to date are considered far better than those obtainable from any other currently available technique. Nontheless, the technique can be improved to reduce the bias.

    Description: Since NASA's program of research concerning remote sensing was initiated in the 1960s, one of its major objectives has been to advance the state-of-the-art in machine processing of satellite acquired multispectral data. Possibilities have been studied regarding a use of these data to identify type, to monitor condition, and to estimate the ontogenetic stage of cultural vegetation. The present investigation provides a review of the state-of-the-art of the technology used to make remote sensing crop production estimates in foreign regions. Attention is given to Landsat data acquisition, aspects of registration and preprocessing, questions of data transformation, data modeling, proportion estimation, labeling, development stage models, crop condition models, and an outlook regarding future developments.

    Description: The improved spatial resolution of the new earth resources satellites will increase the need for effective utilization of spatial information in machine processing of remotely sensed data. One promising technique is scene segmentation by region growing. Region growing can use spatial information in two ways: only spatially adjacent regions merge together, and merging criteria can be based on region-wide spatial features. A simple region growing approach is described in which the similarity criterion is based on region mean and variance (a simple spatial feature). An effective way to implement region growing for remote sensing is as an iterative parallel process on a large parallel processor. A straightforward parallel pixel-based implementation of the algorithm is explored and its efficiency is compared with sequential pixel-based, sequential region-based, and parallel region-based implementations. Experimental results from on aircraft scanner data set are presented, as is a discussioon of proposed improvements to the segmentation algorithm.

    Description: The paper presents infrared photometry of the RS CVn binary stars AR Lac (1.2-10 microns) and MM Her (1.2-3.5 microns) as they egressed from their primary and secondary eclipses; of the eclipsing systems RS CVn and Z Her at maximum light (1.2-10 microns) and of the non-eclipsing systems UX Ari and HR 1099 (1.2-10 microns). An analysis of these and published V data based on flux ratio diagrams (linear analogues of color-color diagrams) shows that G and K stars supply the infrared light of these systems. In AR Lac, the combined light of a G5-K0 subgiant and either a late F dwarf or an early F subgiant can account for the observed visual and infrared light curves. None of these systems shows infrared emission from circumstellar matter. This result is simply understood: dust grains would not be expected to form in the physical conditions surrounding the subgiant, and the corona and chromosphere (whose properties have been deduced from spectroscopic X-ray observations) should not produce appreciable infrared emission.

    Description: The High Resolution Spectrograph is one of five scientific instruments which will be part of the Space Telescope observatory. The spectrograph was designed to take advantage of the imaging and pointing capabilities of the telescope to obtain ultraviolet spectra with spectral resolution comparable to large, ground-based coudeinstruments. Some of the results of the ground-based testing program will be described, along with applications of these properties to future science programs.

    Description: Attention is given to semidetached binaries of the Algol type and to related interacting systems, such as Beta Lyrae and the W Serpentis stars. A brief description is given of observational problems. The basic properties of the Algol variables are satisfactorily explained by means of evolutionary models that assume considerable mass transfer between the components. It is pointed out that ultraviolet spectra obtained with the IUE satellite corroborate the view that the present subgiant secondary component was initially the more massive star and that it has been stripped of a large fraction of its mass so that the deep layers affected by CNO processing are now denuded. It is believed that the present-day 'classical' Algols must have undergone a phase of rapid mass transfer in the past and that Beta Lyrae and the W Serpentis stars are probably closer to that stage than ordinary Algols. Around the accreting star a complex structure is formed, and an induced stellar wind may blow a large part of the transferred matter out of the system.

    Description: The scientific instruments comprising the OSTA-1 package flown on the second Shuttle mission (November 12-14, 1981) are listed, and the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-A) experiments are examined in detail: SIR-A operated for 8 h and obtained images covering more than 10 million sq km at 40-m resolution. The images were recorded on photographic film and processed in holographic form at JPL, and data for Southern Europe and parts of Africa were distributed to French scientists by the Groupement pour le Developpement de la Teledetection Aerospatiale. The main areas of research were environmental studies and geology, and the SIR-A images were used in combination with aerial photography, thematic maps, and Landsat images. The technical specifications of the SIR-B radar planned for STS-17 in 1984 are compared with those of SIR-A and Seasat SAR in tables.

    Description: A method of incorporating the effects of photographic emulsion grain noise into digital image centering algorithms is presented which improves the accuracy of the derived stellar positions and magnitudes. Theoretical formulae are then derived for the limiting error of the center, and the photometric parameters. For IIIa-J, this error is 0.2-0.3 mu for bright unsaturated images, which agrees quite well with measurements made with the Yale PDS microdensitometer. It is expected that, with further improvements in the positional accuracy of the PDS, it should be possible to reach the emulsion grain noise limit, providing that emulsion shifts or other large scale errors do not dominate. It is also shown that, with appropriate trimming, marginal distribution image centering algorithms can yield an accuracy only slightly poorer than that obtained with two-dimensional distributions.

    Description: In this paper, results of a Monte Carlo simulation of the effect of noise on the relationship between the microwave emissivity of soil and its moisture content are presented. It is found that whenever the magnitude of the noise for the independent variable, in this case the soil moisture, is increased, both the slope of the regression and the correlation coefficient decrease. In particular, when the noise has magnitude equivalent to a coefficient of variation of 0.25, the slope and correlation coefficient are in good agreement with those obtained from the data of a 21-cm airborne microwave radiometer which was flown over a test site in hand county, South Dakota. The comparison was made using a linear relationship to determine the estimated emissivity from the ground measurements of soil moisture. The linear relationship was derived from a radiative transfer model calculation of the microwave emissivities using realistic soil-moisture profiles. The effect of surface roughness was included in the relationship, and the variability of the surface roughness was also simulated by a Monte Carlo technique.

    Description: The problem posed by the existence of a negative buoyancy work region at the top of cellular type convection in a deeply stratified superadiabatic layer (Massaguer and Zahn, 1980) is addressed. It is approached by studying two-dimensional cellular compressible convection with different physical parameters. The results suggest that a large viscosity, together with density stratification, is responsible for the buoyancy reversal. The numerical results obtained are analyzed. It is pointed out, however, that in an astrophysical situation a fluid involved in convection will generally have very small viscosity. It is therefore thought unlikely that buoyancy reversal occurs in this way.

    Description: Duley (1982) has proposed that many of the diffuse interstellar bands in the wavelength interval 542-677 nm arise from vibronic transitions of Cr (3+) ions in MgO grains. No explanation has been offered for the fact that as many as 85 of the possible 108 transitions of this system have not been observed in the interstellar medium. Moreover, the relative intensities of the diffuse bands which are observed appear to be inconsistent with their assignment. It is therefore concluded that this model is not consistent with the observations.

    Description: The plausibility of relatively pure diatomic oxide crystals forming in the expanding atmospheres of cool stars is commented on, and the likelihood of SiO grains condensing is discussed on the basis of laboratory nucleation experiments. Results of annealing experiments are used to consider the further evolution of silicon oxide and silicate grains. The evidence shows that SiO solids form only when SiO condenses directly onto surfaces, and that the probability of pure crystalline SiO grains forming is rather small.

    Description: Newly defined characteristics of planetary nebulae (PN) derived from analysis of a photometric survey of 57 PN are reported. The data were combined with measurements of 27 other PN made since 1918 and were found to indicate core masses ranging from 0.55-1.0 solar mass. N/O elemental abundance ratios observed were correlated with the planetary nuclei masses, and were in direct proportion. IUE data on PN that overlapped a large part of the survey indicated that the PN in the galactic disk are more massive than PN in the halo. It is suggested that PN evolve into white dwarfs, a hypothesis supported by astrometric solutions for three nearby visual binaries featuring white dwarfs with well-determined masses. It is noted, however, that PN with masses exceeding one solar mass have been sighted in the Magellanic Clouds.

    Description: Agriculture, which occupies a vital position in the economy of the State of California, depends crucially on the available water. The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is, therefore, greatly concerned with the total water requirements for agricultural applications. In view of the limitations of an area-limited, single-date survey system, the DWR has been cooperating with NASA and the University of California in a study of the applicability of Landsat imagery and digital data as an aid in making decisions concerning the management of water resources. Attention is given to a statewide inventory of irrigated land, computer-assisted estimation and mapping of irrigated land, and a crop type analysis using Landsat digital data.

    Description: The development of a preprocessing unit for Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data for the Earth Observations Data Laboratory at Johnson Space Center is reported. The background of the project is sketched, including the greatly increased data-handling requirements compared to MSS, the influence of the JPL VICAR system on the system design, and the completeness of the GSFC SCROUNGE (LASLIB) TM data tapes. The design approach and realization are discussed, and the performance and transportability of the preprocessor programs (totaling about 2000 lines of source code in FORTRAN and IBM Assembly languages) are indicated. The system is able to read the TM image tapes, extract areas of interest to particular studies, and register the extracted imagery to suitable references. Ancillary programs include image enhancement, rotation, filtering and pixel-size modification.

    Description: Features of the NASA Regional Application Program for providing state and local land management agencies an opportunity to assess the usefulness of emerging remote sensing technology are described. The Program guidelines necessitated configuring software for local facilities, assuring that the aggncy involved furnished manpower, and applying the technology to local needs. The study focused on the southwestern U.S., particularly for purposes of water management, federal/state ownership/policy, energy development, environmental impact issues, timber and range inventory, fire control, and urban expansion. Demonstration projects were conducted in various topics, according to the state surveyed, with the success of the projects determined by the willingness of the agencies to continue with the technology, which happened in several cases.

    Description: First IUE spectrograms of the peculiar emission-line object M1-2 (= VV 8) are presented. In the wavelength region 1150-3200 A this object is characterized by emission lines superposed on a moderately strong continuum. Some ultraviolet and optical properties of M1-2 are discussed in the context of symbiotic stars and protoplanetary and planetary nebulae. An E(B-V) extinction of 0.37 mag is obtained from the ratio of the He II flux at 1640 and 4686 A and is compared with values derived from other parameters. The ultraviolet observations suggest that M1-2 is a young, high-density planetary nebula of excitation class 5 or 6 with characteristics similar to IC 4997.

    Description: Obsrvations and theoretical investigations of the Gum nebula (GN) since about 1971 are reviewed. Direct observations of the GN, the Vela X supernova remnant (SNR), the Vela pulsar, and other stars in or near the GN are discussed with those of related phenomena such as the radio loops and known SNRs; the emphasis is on studies of the interstellar absorption lines, the evidence for hot gas in the GN, and the extended diffuse emission. The four basic models proposed for the GN are considered: a fossil Stromgren sphere, an old SNR, an H II region, or a superbubble. The GN physical parameters predicted by each model are listed in a table and compared. A minimum explanation which attributes the 36 x 36-deg filamentary structure and the 125-pc radius structure to the action of the stellar winds from Zeta Pup and Gamma-2 Vel (and perhaps the effect of a Vel X supernova explosion 20,000 years ago) is found most appropriate, at least until the questions of the net expansion rate of the GN (about 20 km/sec or about zero?) and the existence of the diffuse emission beyond the filamentary structure are resolved by observations.

    Description: Previous work on electron heating mechanisms operating at the supercritical earth's bow shock is extended to the generally lower Mach number interplanetary shocks. This is done by studying electron velocity distributions observed both upstream and downstream of interplanetary shocks observed by ISEE 3 between August 1978 and December 1979. It is found that perpendicular heating accompanied by little or no parallel heating occurs at the weaker shocks but that parallel heating is dominant for the stronger shocks. When perpendicular heating is dominant, downstream velocity distributions are for the most part Gaussian at low energies (core) and Lorentzian at high energies (halo). When parallel heating is dominant, however, these distributions are flat-topped at low energies, having power law extensions to higher energies. At the weaker shocks, the observations are consistent with electron heating resulting from conservation of the magnetic moment, whereas at the stronger shocks the heating is quite similar to that observed at the earth's bow shock.

    Description: In the development of a celestial radio reference frame, there are now over 100 sources whose relative positions are known with an average uncertainty less than 5 milliarcseconds. These sources are fairly uniformly distributed over the celestial sphere north of -40 deg declination. Their positions are expressed in the new IAU system. This presentation describes the analysis involved in obtaining these results, as well as future plans for linking this system to the JPL planetary ephemerides.

    Description: Preliminary inspection of archival high-dispersion ultraviolet spectra obtained by the International Ultraviolet Explorer reveal sharp shortward-shifted features in the spectra of O subdwarfs. In three examples presented here, BD + 75.325 deg, HD 128220 B, and BD + 28.4211 deg, stable, multiple, discrete shortward-shifted components of the N V, C IV, and Si IV resonance doublets are seen. The available data suggest that some of these features are persistent, being relatively stable in velocity and intensity over at least 9 months. It is tentatively suggested that the mechanism, or mechanisms, producing these discrete features operates universally in hot stars, from luminous O and B stars down through the O subdwarfs to include the hot white dwarfs. If true, this has important ramifications for current knowledge of mass loss in hot stars.

    Description: Ultraviolet images of the SAB(s)c I-II galaxy M83 (NGC 5236) obtained with a rocketborne telescope in broad bandpasses centered at 1540 A and 2360 A show a bright resolved nuclear source which accounts for approximately 20 percent of the flux of the galaxy in both bandpasses. Low-resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra of this source reveal an energy distribution similar to that of the starburst nucleus of NGC 7714. Strong blueshifted absorption lines can be interpreted as evidence for a nuclear wind powered by supernovae. Observations from UV, X-ray, optical, and far-infrared bandpasses are consistent with a starburst approximately one-sixth as strong as that in M82. A scaling of the M82 models of Rieke et al. (1980) predicts that the nucleus of M83 contains 10 to the 6th - 3 x 10 to the 7th solar masses in young stars and has a supernova rate of approximately 0.01 per yr.

    Description: A comparison is presented of the black hole candidates LMC X-3 and Cygnus X-1 based on Einstein observations of LMC X-3 with the monitor proportional counter. A spectral analysis shows LMC X-3 to be more like the typical bright galactic X-ray source than Cygnus X-1. A search for periodic pulsations over a period range from 0.2 ms to over 1000 s set upper limits at the 90 percent confidence level of the order of 10 percent. An analysis of the aperiodic variability of LMC X-3 shows none of the shot noise behavior characteristic of Cygnus X-1. The absence of distinctive X-ray properties common to both sources suggests that the identification of black hole candidates on the basis of X-ray properties similar to Cygnus X-1 (or LMC X-3) is not reliable.

    Description: The Kalnajs (1972, 1976) Omega models of global mass and velocity distributions are employed in the present two-dimensional N-body simulation, which allows for a spectrum of particle masses, stellar explosions, explosion remnant interactions with an interstellar medium, and the creation of new stars from the gas. Two sequences of runs using the Omega values of 0.8 and 0.9 examine the separate and combined effects of particle mass distribution, the gravitational influence of an interstellar gas distribution on the N-body particles, and stellar evolution, allowing for stellar explosions and star formation from the gas. It is found that both Omega values' nonequilibrium results dramatically change when evolution is allowed to occur. These results call for more realistic coupled N-body and evolution simulations in order to improve the understanding of disk galaxy evolution.

    Description: A statistical correlation technique is applied to the retrieval of vertical moisture profiles from downlooking radiometric measurements of atmospheric radiation at microwave wavelengths. Only an optimum subset of available radiometer channels is selected for estimating water vapor at specific pressure levels. To test its validity the algorithm was applied, in a numerical experiment, to 50 independent tropical radiosondes over a sea surface. It was also used to retrieve continuous sequences of atmospheric moisture profiles from a set of data obtained with a 4-channel microwave radiometer carried aboard an aircraft over a land surface.

    Description: The SEASAT altimeter (ALT), scatterometer (SASS), and scanning microwave multichannel radiometer (SMMR) measured sea surface wind speed. During the satellite lifetime from June to October 1978, the Austral winter, the highest wind speeds were recorded in the Southern Ocean. Three-month, monthly, and three-day surface wind speed fields deduced from the three Seasat wind speed sensors are compared. The monthly and three-day fields show a pronounced mesoscale (1000 km) variability in wind speed. At all space and time scales analyzed, differences of 40% are found in the magnitude of the wind speed features, with the ALT consistently yielding the lowest wind speed and the SMMR the highest.

    Description: Passive microwave measurements of the Bering Sea were made with the NASA CV-990 airborne laboratory during February. Microwave data were obtained with imaging and dual-polarized, fixed-beam radiometers in a range of frequencies from 10 to 183 GHz. The high resolution imagery at 92 GHz provides a particularly good description of the marginal ice zone delineating regions of open water, ice compactness, and ice-edge structure. Analysis of the fixed-beam data shows that spectral differences increase with a decrease in ice thickness. Polarization at 18 and 37 GHz distinguishes among new, young, and first-year sea ice types.

    Description: Data acquired with the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) on board the Nimbus-7 Satellite for a six-week period in Fram Strait were analyzed with a procedure for calculating sea ice concentration, multiyear fraction, and ice temperature. Calculations were compared with independent observations made on the surface and from aircraft to check the validity of the calculations based on SMMR data. The calculation of multiyear fraction, which was known to be invalid near the melting point of sea ice, is discussed. The indication of multiyear ice is found to disappear a number of times, presumably corresponding to freeze/thaw cycles which occurred in this time period.

    Description: An assessment is made of the extent to which the study of the isotropy of the X-ray sky has contributed to the present understanding of the structure of the universe at moderate redshifts. It is, of course, the anisotropic character of the sky flux that is valuable in this context. Although it is not currently possible to undertake measurements with the precision and small solid angles that are typically achieved in the microwave range, the comparatively crude limits from the X-ray fluctuations place limits on the largest scale structure of the universe. After indicating the nature of measurements made, with the HEAO 1 A-2 experiment, of the X-ray sky and its anisotropies, it is shown how these place limits on the origin of the X-ray sky and on any large scale structure of the universe.

    Description: The California Integrated Remote Sensing System's San Bernardino County Project was devised to study the utilization of a data base at a number of jurisdictional levels. The present paper discusses the implementation of change-detection and masking techniques in the updating of Landsat-derived land-cover maps. A baseline landcover classification was first created from a 1976 image, then the adjusted 1976 image was compared with a 1979 scene by the techniques of (1) multidate image classification, (2) difference image-distribution tails thresholding, (3) difference image classification, and (4) multi-dimensional chi-square analysis of a difference image. The union of the results of methods 1, 3 and 4 was used to create a mask of possible change areas between 1976 and 1979, which served to limit analysis of the update image and reduce comparison errors in unchanged areas. The techniques of spatial smoothing of change-detection products, and of combining results of difference change-detection algorithms are also shown to improve Landsat change-detection accuracies.

    Description: A technique is examined for improving the comparability of Landsat multisppectral scanner (MSS) data acquired on different dates. The technique involves conversion of digital brightness counts to relative radiance values measured in energy units (milliwatts per square centimeter-steradian). The statistical data of signature from 23 land cover (or biomass) classifications derived from all three Landsats were compared before and after the radiance normalization. Significant convergence occurred among the data sets for mean spectral values and the variances associated with each of seven major land cover types for MSS bands 4, 5, and 7. Overall, the variance attributed to the sensor component was reduced from 5.39 to 2.69 percent, with the largest decrease occurring in band 4 (14.4 percent to 3.7 percent).

    Description: Soil moisture budgets at the Earth's surface were investigated based on soil and atmospheric temperature variations. A number of data sets were plotted and statistically analyzed in order to accentuate the existence and the characteristics of mesoscale soil temperature extrema variations and their relations to other parameters. The correlations between diurnal temperature extrema for air and soil in drought and non-drought periods appear to follow different characteristic patterns, allowing an inference of soil moisture content from temperature data. The recovery of temperature extrema after a precipitation event also follows a characteristic power curve rise between two limiting values which is an indicator of evaporation rates. If these indicators are applied universally to regional temperature data, soil moisture content or drought conditions can be inferred directly from temperature measurements.

    Description: The destruction of interstellar grains by nonthermal sputtering, thermal sputtering, and grain-grain collisions is discussed. It is concluded that large grains are easily destroyed by shocks in the interstellar medium, but that small grains are much more persistent. Since the MRN model has many more small grains than large ones, this means that the total number of grains is not significantly reduced even when half or more of the grain material is returned to the gas phase. Thus, the small grains are always available as condensation cores for mantle formation or redepletion of refractory grain materials.

    Description: Observations of the infrared cluster of low luminosity protostars in Orion Molecular Cloud 2 (OMC2) are reported. Results show that the asymmetric distribution of the extended emission seen about IRS1 is another infrared reflection nebula. Energy distributions show that the spectral shape is fairly constant throughout the nebula which indicates there is little internal extinction within this region. Integrated surface brightness values show that the nebula is 5 times brighter than IRS1 at K. Energy distributions show that IRS1 has a more pronounced ice band absorption feature at 3.1 micron; suggesting that there is more extinction along the direct line of sight to IRS1 than along a line from IRS1 to the scattering grains and then to the observer. The distribution of the extended emission around IRS1 is similar to the reflection nebula seen in NGC 7538 (Werner et al. 1979). The asymmetric shapes of the two nebulae are similar and in each case there is excess extinction along line of sight to the illuminating source.

    Description: It is noted that it is helpful to divide the atmosphere of an early-type star into two parts: a photosphere and a mantle. The photosphere can be modeled satisfactorily by normal model-atmosphere procedures. When modeling the mantle, one must take account of the deposition of nonradiative heat and momentum and one should recognize that the mantles of hot stars do not appear to be uniform or spherically symmetric. Five areas of discrepancy between classical theory and observation are noted and a possible way of modeling the mantles of early-type stars is outlined. The model consists of arcades of magnetic loops which form helmet-type structures in the equatorial band of the star, and of coronal-hole-type structures emmanating from weak unipolar regions which are chiefly distributed at polar latitudes.

    Description: Information about the effective temperatures, radii, and masses of O-type stars is presented. It is argued that rapid variations in the amount of light from O stars and the spectral distribution are a result chiefly of changes which occur in the envelope of the star. The stability of the photospheric layers of O stars against convection is reviewed and it is noted that late O stars and early B stars have a convection zone in the deeper parts of the photosphere. This convection zone is due to the second ionization of helium. Evidence is reviewed that most of the line-profile changes seen for O stars are generated by changes in the physical state of the mantle of the star, that is of the outer atmosphere where the deposition of non-radiative energy and momentum controls the physical state of the atmosphere. The physical state of the mantle may change in response to changes in the upper envelope of a star with a different time constant than the photosphere does.

    Description: The transient intensity dips of the binary system Cyg X-1 have been observed, using the gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) array onboard the Tenma X-ray astronomy satellite. The duration of the dips was in the range from several seconds to 10 minutes, with several dips occurring as much as 15 h before the superior conjunction. Within the dips, complex structures were observed with time scales of several seconds, and, in at least one case, shorter than two seconds. For a dip lasting longer than 10 minutes, a high-quality spectrum was obtained which reveals the K-absorption edge of iron at 7.18 + or - 0.18 keV. On the basis of the observed absorption, it is suggested that the dips are caused by absorption due to relatively cool matter (less than about 30,000 k); the low-energy excess observed during the dips is due either to an extended soft X-ray emitting corona or to partial obscuration of the X-ray source by multiple blobs. From the time structure of the dip, a blob size of the order of 10 to the 9th cm is derived.

    Description: Changes in leaf spectra caused by mineralization under different conditions of preservation are measured using a three-band portable radiometer which simulates three Thematic Mapper bands 3, 4, and 5. Daily spectral measurements of white oak (Quercus alba) leaves did not distinguish among the fresh, bottled, and bagged vegetation in the spectral bands 3 and 5 for up to four days after collection. The reflected energy of the preserved vegetation increased thereafter, reportedly due to the loss of chlorophyll and dehydration. It is concluded that the measurement procedure is sufficiently sensitive as to discern documented patterns of variation in reflectance measurements.

    Description: An airborne multispectral scanner, operating in the same spectral channels as the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), was used in a region east of Denver, CO, for a simulation test performed in the framework of using TM to discriminate the level I and level II classes. It is noted that at the 30-m spatial resolution of the Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) the overall discrimination for such classes as commercial/industrial land, rangeland, irrigated sod, irrigated alfalfa, and irrigated pasture was superior to that of the Landsat Multispectral Scanner, primarily due to four added spectral bands. For residential and other spectrally heterogeneous classes, however, the higher resolution of TMS resulted in increased variability within the class and a larger spectral overlap.

    Description: The comet thermal model of Weissman and Kieffer is used to calculate gas production rates and other parameters for the 1986 perihelion passages of Halley's Comet. Gas production estimates are very close to revised pre-perihelion estimates by Newburn based on 1910 observations of Halley; the increase in observed gas production post-perihelion may be explained by a variety of factors. The energy contribution from multiply scattered sunlight and thermal emission by coma dust increases the total energy reaching the Halley nucleus at perihelion by a factor of 2.4. The high obliquity of the Halley nucleus found by Sekanina and Larson may help to explain the asymmetry in Halley's gas production rates around perihelion.

    Description: It is pointed out that solid material present in the coma and tail of a comet is revealed by the scattering of sunlight and thermal emission of absorbed solar radiation. The large beam size and low background of the cold Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) telescope make it extremely well suited to the measurement of faint diffuse thermal emission from solid grains associated with comets. The IRAS project was conducted jointly by the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Its basic objective involved a survey of the sky in four wavelength regions centered on 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns. The present paper is mainly concerned with IRAS observations of the coma-nucleus regions as defined by the maximum in the intensity distribution. Attention is given to circumstances of comet observations, dust production rates, and a discussion of the results.

    Description: Measurements of the thermal emission from the cometary dust coma can be used to derive the rate of dust production from the nucleus as well as the size distribution of absorbing grains. More than ten short-period comets have now been observed in the infrared over a wide range in heliocentric distance. Dust production rates are derived for these comets based on theoretical models of the thermal emission from small absorbing grains and calculations of dust grain velocities. The mean size and albedo of the dust grains is similar in these comets, with the exception of Comet Crommelin, which seems to have had larger, darker grains.

    Description: The semiempirical photometric theory of gas and dust production in comets (Newburn, 1979, 1981, and 1982) is recalibrated on the basis of the 17-comet compilation of spectrophotometric data of Newburn and Spinrad (1984). The results are presented in graphs and tables, and it is shown that no corrections are required for the constant R and the function delta, but that the mixing ratios (obtained as functions of heliocentric distance) can be improved, with implications for the visual-photometric comet model. Recently calculated light curves for comet Halley are compared, and the use of the nearly identical curves of Bortle and Morris (1984) and Marcus (1983) is recommended.

It is primarily concerned with the application of remote sensing techniques for the management of natural resources. A description is given of the types of images identified in EROS, taking into account Landsat imagery, Skylab images, Gemini/Apollo photography, and NASA aerial photography.     Description: Expected enhancement of the N III emission-line spectrum by the Bowen He II to O III to N III resonant photoexcitation process is computed using a six-configuration model. Preliminary comparisons with available solar and nebular observations indicate that the process may play only a small role, although photoexcitation quenching of the N III and O III far-infrared fine-structure lines is noted as a possibly important mechanism. Some features are discussed in connection with the nebular emission at 1750 A, which is suggested as an indicator of excitation class for planetary nebulae.

    Description: Ariel 5 and SAS 3 X-ray pulse timing data for the 700 s X-ray pulsar 4U 1223 - 62 (GX 301 - 2) are reexamined in order to deduce the orbital elements of this system. The Ariel 5/SAS 3 arrival times are first reanalyzed to obtain the best solution for an orbital period close to 41.5 days and to estimate the uncertainties in it caused by unknown variations in the underlying pulse period. Spectral measurements by OSO 8 and HEAO 1 at a variety of orbital phases are presented and the origin of an unabsorbed, unpulsed soft component is discussed. OSO 8 observations of occasions when the amplitude and shape of the pulse profile changed dramatically are discussed. The global X-ray properties of the system are explained in terms of a simple stellar wind accretion model, and the interaction of the inflowing material with the neutron star magnetosphere is considered.

    Description: The present investigation is concerned with a comparison of the spectra of four O stars (10 Lac, S Mon, HD 46223, and Zeta Pup) which have similar effective temperatures, taking into account an attempt to find the reason for differences regarding the spectral type of the stars. The photospheres of the stars are examined, taking into account the effective temperatures, radii, speed of rotation, and masses. Information is presented about the equivalent widths and profiles of strong lines in the visible and ultraviolet spectra of each star. It is found that the four stars have similar photospheres but different mantles. The stars are assigned different spectral types because the empirically selected lines used for determining spectral type in class O are sensitive primarily to conditions in the mantle of the star and not to conditions in the photosphere. Questions concerning the reasons for the differences regarding the mantles are also explored.

    Description: High signal-to-noise ratio spectra in the range of 5-8 microns of four sources embedded in molecular clouds are examined using low-temperature laboratory measurements of the 5-8-micron spectra of simple molecules and their mixtures. The absorption, apparent in all four sources, is characterized by highly distinct features ranging from two relatively narrow bands at 6.0 and 6.8 microns in W33A to a broad, shallow, and partially structured feature extending from 5.2 to 7.8 microns in Mon R2-IRS2, BN, and NGC2264. The first feature (W33A) is explained by the OH bending mode in H2O and the CH deformation modes in saturated hydrocarbons; while the second feature (Mon R2-IRS2-type) is explained by the presence of a mixture of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons possibly containing strongly electronegative groups.

    Description: IUE observations of the peculiar 'Butterfy' nebula M2-9 indicate that it is not a normal planetary nebula. The ultraviolet spectrum is characterized by few emission lines and a weak continuum. Mg II 2800 A is the strongest emission line present and may be indicative of a binary nucleus. Lines of N v, Q I, N III, N IV, Si III, and C III are seen, but C IV and O III are conspicuous by their absence. T(e) = 10,250 + or - 400 K was determined for the core. Nitrogen in the core is found to be overabundant by about a factor of 5 over the solar value. M2-9 may be an object in the early stages of becoming a planetary nebula.

    Description: The results of Monte Carlo simulations of steady state shocks generated by a collision operator that isotropizes the particles by means of elastic scattering in some locally defined frame of reference are presented. The simulations include both the back reaction of accelerated particles on the inflowing plasma and the free escape of high-energy particles from finite shocks. Energetic particles are found to be naturally extracted out of the background plasma by the shock process with an efficiency in good quantitative agreement with an earlier analytic approximation (Eichler, 1983 and 1984) and observations (Gosling et al., 1981) of the entire particle spectrum at a quasi-parallel interplanetary shock. The analytic approximation, which allows a self-consistent determination of the effective adiabatic index of the shocked gas, is used to calculate the overall acceleration efficiency and particle spectrum for cases where ultrarelativistic energies are obtained. It is found that shocks of the strength necessary to produce galactic cosmic rays put approximately 15 percent of the shock energy into relativistic particles.

    Description: A generalized model which accounts for the effects of initially uniform and slow rotation is defined for the spherical collapse of a singular isothermal sphere such as protosolar and binary nebulae. An initial unstable equilibrium state is described for a sound speed of 0.35 km/sec and a rotation rate of 10 to the -14th/sec for the molecular cloud surrounding the accreting core. The total angular momentum and mass of the inner cloud is set equal to solar system values. The evolution of the collapse is traced by applying a perturbation analysis to the similarity solution for a nonrotating condition, and matched asymptotic expansions solve the hydrodynamic equations. The model is concluded a valid tool for studying star and nebular disk formation.

    Description: The balloon-borne UV Stellar Spectrometer's high resolution, near-UV spectra of the supergiant Alpha Cyg are subjected to analysis in order to determine the average microturbulent line-of-sight velocity component. A value of 15.0 + or - 0.5 km/sec is obtained, which is close to the 13.7 km/sec local sound velocity, and is consistent with the view that shock waves are the dominant structure in the outer photosphere of Deneb, so that shock wave dissipation determines the thermal structure of the photosphere.

    Description: The sensitivity of thermal inertia (TI) calculations to errors in the measurement or parameterization of a number of environmental factors is considered here. The factors include effects of radiative transfer in the atmosphere, surface albedo and emissivity, variations in surface turbulent heat flux density, cloud cover, vegetative cover, and topography. The error analysis is based upon data from the Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM) satellite for July 1978 at three separate test sites in the deserts of the western United States. Results show that typical errors in atmospheric radiative transfer, cloud cover, and vegetative cover can individually cause root-mean-square (RMS) errors of about 10 percent (with atmospheric effects sometimes as large as 30-40 percent) in HCMM-derived thermal inertia images of 20,000-200,000 pixels.

    Description: The possibility that an invisible solar companion passing through the Oort cloud every 28 Myr precipitates a sufficiently high rate of cometary collisions with the earth to account for periodic mass species extinctions recorded in the fossil record is discussed. A Monte Carlo simulation shows that any hypothesized 'death star' with a 28 Myr orbit would experience an average 10 percent change in period per orbit. Production of an 18-fold increase in cometary impacts would be associated with a 0.055 probability that a 10 km nucleus would hit the earth in a shower once every 510 Myr, longer than the proposed extinction periodicity. However, if the death star orbit has a 0.6 eccentricity and the Oort cloud is sufficiently densely populated, a 2 billion comet shower may be possible. A survey of large terrestrial impact craters indicates that 6-12 craters with diameters over 10 km originated in periodic showers. The extinctions in any case occur at 26 Myr periods and cannot be correlated with the 33 Myr period of recrossing the galactic plane, or with any other known phenomena.

    Description: Ultraviolet observations of atomic carbon in cometary comae show that carbon-bearing compounds must comprise a significant fraction (approximately equal to or greater than 10 percent) of the volatiles. One likely source is CO. This compound is an important constituent of at least some cometary nuclei, even though it may not be the ultimate source of atomic carbon in all comets. Feldman (1983) has suggested that the relative abundance of CO may be one of the few fundamental characteristics which distinguish one comet from another. The present investigation is, therefore, concerned with the vibrational and rotational excitation of the CO molecule in cometary comae. Two previously neglected factors are taken into account in the study. The fractional populations of CO as solutions to time-dependent differential equations are derived, and a nonisothermal and cold kinetic temperature profile for the inner coma is considered.

    Description: Four early-type supergiants - HD 79186 (B5 Ia), HD 96919 (B9 Ia), HD 105056 (ON9.7 Iae), and HD 148379 (B2 Iae) - have been observed with the low-resolution spectrographs of IUE in the large aperture on 14 days. The behavior of the ultraviolet fluxes with time is studied. The light from all four stars seems to vary. Typically the dispersion about the mean magnitude at any wavelength corresponds to + or - 0.085, + or - 0.080, + or - 0.101, and + or - 0.106 mag, respectively. These amplitudes exceed the typical uncertainty in an IUE measurement of flux by about a factor of 3; they are somewhat larger than the variations known in the visible wavelength range. There are insufficient data to investigate periodicity in the observed light changes. The effective temperatures and angular diameters of the stars have been estimated using the present ultraviolet photometry, published UBV and uvby photometry, and the model-atmosphere fluxes reported by Kurucz in 1979. The program stars have dimensions typical for their spectral types. A brief discussion is given of possible causes of the variability of hot supergiants.

    Description: The region in the Saturn system between the F ring and the outer edge of the A ring is an area that appears, in images from the imaging experiment, to be virtually devoid of material except for three small satellites. Near the orbit of 1980S28, Atlas - the innermost satellite - the Voyager Photopolarimeter Stellar Occultation data show a discontinuity in count rate which marks a boundary between the tenuous material near the outer edge of the A ring and the orbit of Atlas. The data pertaining to this region have been examined with the aid of statistics and models generated from other similar ring structures. It is concluded that the discontinuity is real, implying the existence of tenuous material of normal optical depth of 0.01 to 0.006 in this region.

    Description: Asteroid 1984 AB, discovered in January 1984, proved to be a unique object with a close dynamical relationship to Mars. A brief history of the discovery and subsequent 'evolution' of the orbit as it was refined is presented. The preliminary orbit of 1984 AB indicated that it might be a Mars Trojan, and an extended discussion of this interesting possibility is presented, but this hypothesis had to be dismissed after further observations had refined the orbit. The semimajor axis and orbital eccentricity are very similar to that of Mars. No other known Mars-crossing asteroid exists with an orbit as closely associated to Mars.

    Description: Alluvial fans have been mapped in Death Valley, California using NASA's 8-12 micron six-channel airborne Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS). Both composition and relative age differences were recognized. Age unit boundries are generally consistent with those obtained by conventional mapping. Composition was verified by field investigation and comparison with existing geologic maps. Bedrock and its young derived fan gravels have similar emissivities. The original composition of the fans is modified by differential erosion and weathering, permitting relative age mapping with TIMS.

    Description: Emissivity and reflectivity in the thermal infrared spectral region (8-13 microns) may be used to discriminate among rocks and minerals. Although considerable success has been achieved in remote sensing classification of rock types based on emissivity measurements made with NASA's Thermal Infreared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS), classification based on reflectivity offers several advantages: much narrower bandwidths are used, higher signal to noise ratios are possible, and measurements are little affected by surface temperature. As a demonstration, an airborne CO2 laser instrument was flown along the margin of Death Valley, California. Measurements of spectral reflectance collected with this device were compared with emissivity measurements made with the TIMS. Data from either instrument provided the means for recognizing boundaries between geologic units including different rock types and fan surfaces of different ages.

    Description: Radar echoes from Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock at wavelengths 3.54 and 12.9 cm indicate that the comet's nucleus is very rough on a scale larger than the radar wavelengths; however, the low polarization ratio (25 percent at 3.54 cm) indicates that the scattering is not dominated by multiple reflections, internal reflections, or large abundances of sharp edges, cracks, and pits. The shape of the nucleus probably departs greatly from a sphere with average radii near 3-4 km. The nucleus does not appear to look significantly different from a number of Apollo and Amor asteroids except that: (1) there is a suggestion that minor structure moves rapidly across the spectra, and (2) the debris not gravitationally bound to the comet was detected, and contributes 25 percent of the total radar cross section at the 12.9-cm wavelength. Other considerations suggest that the pole was at least 45 deg away from the line of sight on two days of observation, and that the rotation period is approximately 1-2 days.

    Description: Cyclotron emission in the inner regions of an accretion disk around a matter accreting black hole can be appreciable. In the case of the X-ray source Cyg X-1, cyclotron emission may provide the soft photons needed for 'Comptonization' to produce high energy X-rays. The inverse correlation between the fluxes of high energy and low energy X-rays during the 'high' and 'low' states of Cyg X-1, may be understood as a result of the variation of the rate of accretion and the Compton scattering of the cyclotron photons. In the case of the X-ray source GX 339-4, the observed optical flux during the high states does not seem to be due to cyclotron emission, but probably due to reprocessing of high energy X-rays by the outer regions of the disk.

    Description: Observational results are presented from a new large-scale survey of the first quadrant of the galactic plane at wavelengths of 150, 250, and 300 microns, with a 10 x 10 arcmin beam. The emission detected in the survey arises from compact sources, most of which are identified with known peaks of 5 GHz or CO emission, or both, and from an underlying diffuse background with a typical angular width of about 0.9 deg (FWHM) which accounts for most of the emission. A total of 80 prominent discrete sources are identified and characterized, of which about half have not previously been reported at far-infrared wavelengths. The total infrared luminosity within the solar circle is about 1 to 2 x 10 to the 10th solar luminosity, and is probably emitted by dust that resides in molecular clouds.

    Description: The profile of the forbidden line of C III (1909) is the same in two pseudo-trailed, low-resolution SWP spectra of the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 obtained with the IUE in November 1980 and December 1982, respectively. In the 1980 spectrum, the C III forbidden line profile is also very nearly the same as that of the resonance line C IV (1550). In the 1982 spectrum, the continuum is 5 times higher and C IV is both much broader and much brighter. In the difference spectrum, which is interpreted to be the spectrum of a time-variable component, C IV (1550) is the only strong emission feature. The profile of this line closely resembles that of a spherical shell surrounding a less dense gas uniformly expanding from a central opaque object. From values of the profile parameters and from the observed time variability of the object, it is inferred that the shell has a radius of about 10 to the 15th cm, a mass of 0.25 solar mass, an expansion velocity of 13,000 km/s, and an electron density of 10 to the 11th per cu cm. From the line profile and the continuum, it is inferred that the opaque central source has approximate radius of 10 to the 14th cm and temperature 23,000 K.

    Description: Correlations between spectral indices and vegetation parameters in south-central New Mexico were used to determine the utility of Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) spectral indices in arid rangeland monitoring. In addition, spectral index change for 1976-1980 was calculated from retrospective MSS data and compared with qualitative ground truth in order to evaluate vegetation change detection by means of spectral indices. Brightness index change consistently differentiated between cover increase and decrease, but index change appears to have been offset from true cover change; this may at least partly be attributed to the failure of the methods used to standardize MSS scenes for differences in sensor response. Green vegetation indices, by contrast to brightness indices, failed to consistently differentiate between cover increase and decrease.

    Description: A spectral line list for the 10-200 A range is developed from existing solar spectra for application to high spectral resolution measurements of astrophysical plasmas. The solar spectral line lists are merged into a single comprehensive list. The effect of the solar emission measure distribution is removed from the line intensities, which results in a set of emission rates for the lines that can be applied to many optically thin, low density high temperature plasmas in ionization equilibrium. In addition to the measured solar lines, 250 theoretical lines are added to this list. These lines fall in wavelength regions where the existing solar lists have few lines because of limitations in instrumental sensitivity. Also, some lines have been added because the sun has very little plasma at temperatures of about one million K, and consequently these lines are weak or absent in solar spectra. The entire list contains about 600 lines. Finally, predicted spectra of the two RS CVn stars, alpha Aur (Capella) and UX Ari, are presented at 1 and 0.25 A spectral resolution. Also, the solar spectrum is shown at 1 A resolution, and the emission rate spectrum (spectrum not modified by an emission measure distribution) is shown at very high spectral resolution. The predicted spectra for Capella and UX Ari are based on results obtained from the Einstein and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spacecraft.

    Description: A comparison of COS-B gamma-ray observations of the large complex of interstellar clouds in Orion and Monoceros with the Columbia CO and Berkeley H I surveys of this region reveals a good correlation between gamma-ray emission and total gas distribution. The observed gamma-ray emission is explainable in terms of interactions of cosmic rays that are uniformly distributed in this region with the interstellar gas. The correlation is used as the basis of a calibration of the ratio between H2 column density and the integrated CO line intensity; the value of (2.6 + or - 1.2) X 10 to the 20th mol/sq cm K km s thereby obtained is consistent with the value derived from a similar analysis for the inner galaxy.

    Description: The nature and origin of comets is discussed. Observations of the principal parts of comets, the dust and plasma tails, the hydrogen cloud, the coma and the cometary nucleus, are presented, and the icy conglomerate model of Whipple as extended by Delsemme accounting for the observed properties and their variation with heliocentric distance is examined. The origin of comets is considered in relation to the orbital statistics of the long-period comets and the existence of the Oort cloud on the edge of the solar system, and possible roles for comets in the solar nebula and the evolution of the solar system are indicated. Particular attention is then given to the discovery and properties of Halley's Comet, which is expected to reach perihelion in 1986, and to possible flyby and rendezvous missions to Halley's Comet and others.

    Description: The broad spectrum of turbulent motions observed in the interstellar medium may be produced by the shearing action of differential galactic rotation. A steady state eddy distribution is maintained as energy cascades down the eddy hierarchy to smaller-scale motions. The characteristic decay time for interstellar turbulence is found to be 50-billion yr. Objections frequently raised against the presence of long-lived turbulent motions in the interstellar medium are therefore invalid, since these arguments usually presuppose that there is no source of fresh turbulent energy.

    Description: Electron densities for IC 351, IC 2165, J900, IC 3568, NGC 6644, NGC 6891, IC 4997, NGC 7009, Hu 1-2, and IC 5217 are derived from high-dispersion semiforbidden C III spectrograms. For seven of these nebulae, the derived electron density is larger than the values derived from either surface brightness measurements or forbidden line ratios. Only one object, Hu 1-2, shows pronounced splitting of the semiforbidden C III emission lines due to a large expansion velocity.

    Description: Previously reported enhanced soft X-ray emission from the North-Galactic Polar region supports the theory of a hot interstellar component. This paper reports the first detection of line emission from the hot interstellar component in the North-Galactic-Polar region. Measurements were made with solid state Si(Li) detectors aboard a spin-stabilized rocket launched from the White Sands Missile Range on March 22, 1980. Two features are clearly present in the low energy portion of the spectrum derived from the data. They correspond to emission lines from C V (300 eV) and C VI (360 eV), and from O VII (560 eV) and O VIII (650 eV). The detection of emission lines coming from these highly stripped ions is direct evidence for the thermal origin of the emission and confirms the presence of a hot (1-million K) component in the interstellar medium.

    Description: Transpacific balloon flights with the University of California, Riverside (UCR) double scatter telescope are discussed. With flight durations from 5 days up to perhaps 15 days the long observation times necessary for medium energy (1-30 MeV) gamma ray astronomy can be obtained. These flights would be made under the auspices of the Joint U.S.-Japan Balloon Flight Program at NASA. It is proposed that flights can provide at least 30 hours of observation time per flight for many discrete source candidates and 120 hours for detecting low intensity cosmic gamma ray bursts.

    Description: The spectral reflectance characteristics of vegetation have been studied with the objective to learn how to extract useful information about the state of surface vegetation from space-borne observing systems, with emphasis on agricultural applications. Results of simulation studies based on high-resolution airborne spectrometer data indicate that changes in biomass, plant pigment, and leaf water content can be independently tracked by monitoring the reflective properties of vegetation with an appropriate selection of bands.

    Description: Several random process models in the time domain are defined and discussed. Attention is given to the moving average model, the autoregressive model, and relationships between and combinations of these models. Consideration is then given to methods for investigating pulse structure, procedures of model construction, computational methods, and numerical experiments. A FORTRAN algorithm of time series analysis has been developed which is relatively stable numerically. Results of test cases are given to study the effect of adding noise and of different distributions for the pulse amplitudes. A preliminary analysis of the light curve of the quasar 3C 272 is considered as an example.

    Description: Eight new interstellar lines have been detected from three molecules not previously observed spectroscopically in space or in the laboratory. One is a linear or nearly linear molecule with microwave constants B0 equals 21,337.15 plus or minus 0.06 MHz, D0 equals 21.4 plus or minus 1.5 kHz. This is the thioformyl ion HCS(plus), first identified because B0 and D0 are close to those calculated, and now confirmed by laboratory detection of one of the present lines (Gudeman et al.). The second molecule, also linear or nearly so, has microwave constants B0 equals 10,691,406 plus or minus 0.043 MHz, D0 equals 1.84 plus or minus 0.91 kHz close to those expected for the isoelectronic systems HOCO(plus) and HOCN; a choice between the two cannot be made on the basis of the available astronomical data. The existence of a third molecule is deduced from an unidentified line at 85,338 MHz that has been found in many sources, is fairly intense in several, and may be self-absorbed in Sgr B2.

    Description: Consideration is given to particle production and high-energy radiation within apparently superluminal radio components of extragalactic radio sources forming within the apparent region of nuclear activity of a quasar or active galaxy. The physical conditions in compact components observed as radio emitters are derived for the quasars 3C 273 and 3C 345 and extrapolated to those of initial components of sizes on the order of 10 to the 15th cm on the basis of two-dimensional relativistic jet and relativistic three-dimensional models of component expansion. Probabilities that a given particle avoids an inelastic collision in the relativistic plasma are calculated for both cases which show that collisions which produce particles and radiation may be very important during the formation of a compact radio component. The consequences of electron-positron production, bremsstrahlung and proton-proton inelastic collisions ultimately giving rise to neutrinos and gamma rays for the development and energetics of the radio component are then examined, and upper limits to the amount of energy which can be channeled into radio components from an active region without giving rise to a high-energy X-ray source are derived.

    Description: Using measurements on 79 nights in 1980 January-August, it is established that the polarization in the ultraviolet (U band) varies synchronously on the known binary period of 2.6132 days, with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.03%. The pattern is mainly second harmonic in character, as typical of binary star examples such as Algol and Upsilon Her. Reflection by the cooler star, by a plasma concentration, or both, is suggested. The scale of the polarization seems to be consistent with Rayleigh scattering by neutral hydrogen on the cooler star, and a roughly lambda to the -4th wavelength dependence should be searched for. The QU curve suggests a sizeable inclination for the system, of about 45 deg, but this is preliminary. Separately, a possible weak periodicity might be present on a subsidiary period, conceivably related to a rotating star spot.

    Description: It is demonstrated that the X-ray flux from 2A 0311-227 is modulated at the 81 minute orbital period of its optical counterpart. An absorption dip with N sub H approximately equal to 5 x 10 to the 22nd H atoms per sq cm is observed at magnetic phase 0.42 that is interpreted as the accretion column of a magnetic white dwarf passing in front of the X-ray source. The spectrum is thermal with a temperature of 18 keV and a 300 eV equivalent-width iron line at 6.6 keV.

    Description: Effective temperatures, radii, and luminosities were determined from S2/68, ANS, UBV, and uvby photometry for four B0/B1 supergiants, four O4 stars, and four WN7/WN8 stars as well as for four test stars having spectral types between B1.5 V and 09 V and five stars with known angular diameters and effective temperatures. The effective temperatures of B1 Ia+ stars are found to be near 17,000 K, those of O4 stars near 45,000, and those of WN7/WN8 stars near 26,000 K. The question of modeling the atmospheres of hot luminous stars is examined, and it is noted that the photosphere can be modeled adequately using a classical plane-parallel layer model atmosphere. In addition, it is found that the Wolf-Rayet stars of types WN7/WN8 fall in the H-R diagram near the B0 Ia stars, while the others fall near B0.5 III stars. The evolutionary relationship between the Wolf-Rayet and O stars is considered; it is suggested that a Wolf-Rayet spectrum is a short-lived phase in the life of a massive star.

    Description: Solid State Spectrometer observations of the core of the Perseus cluster have resulted in the detection of X-ray emission lines due to Si, S, and Fe. Analysis of the spectrum indicates that the X-ray emission has at least two characteristic temperatures. This is interpreted in the framework of radiative accretion in the core of the cluster. The derived parameters are a cooling time less than or approximately equal to 2 x 10 to the ninth years for the low-temperature gas, a mass accretion rate of approximately 300 solar masses per year, and a characteristic size of 10-20 kpc for the cool gas. The Fe abundance in the core (approximately 0.4) is similar to the Fe abundance averaged over the whole cluster, indicating that Fe emission is not strongly concentrated about NGC 1275. The Si and S abundances are consistent with solar values.

    Description: The effects of azimuthal view angle on the radiometric temperature of wheat canopies at various stages of development are investigated. Measurements of plant height, total leaf area index, green leaf area index and Feeks growth stage together with infrared radiometric temperature measurements at 12 azimuth intervals with respect to solar azimuth and at different solar zenith angles were obtained for four wheat canopies at various heights. Results reveal a difference on the order of 2 C between the temperatures measured at azimuths of 0 and 180 deg under calm wind conditions, which is attributed to the time-dependent transfer of heat between canopy component surfaces. The azimuthal dependence must thus be taken into account in the determination of radiometric temperatures.
